A visionary project across Costa Blanca valleys aims to provide a helping hand for an aging population increasingly in danger of being left isolated and in ill health in their own homes. Jalon Valley HELP and Alcalali Town Hall should be congratulated for pushing forward together with the ‘Animo’ centre – and quite rightly there are calls for this model of cooperation to be taken up along the Costas. The charity runs a popular drop in centre at Alcalali – its new home opened with help from the council after it outgrew its old home in the town. However, it is not just expats that need a support; increasingly older Spanish folk find themselves on their own… younger members of the family having moved away in search of work. It means a fresh challenge for the charity, it has been busy recruiting and can now boast an international team with Spanish speakers ready to offer the same sensible and concrete advice expats have enjoyed for years.

Heroes spark huge ‘thank-you’
VOLUNTARY FIREFIGHTERS are “overwhelmed” at the public’s response to their appeal for help in replacing equipment lost in the battle against the blaze that devastated parts of Javea and Benitachell. by Jack Troughton
Cash is flooding into an internet donation site after the ISVH Bomberos de Balcon al Mar asked for assistance following joining the fight back against an arson attack that destroyed 820 hectares of Marina Alta countryside. A request for 10,000€ following fires started on Sunday 4th September – which involved 1,400 people being evacuated from homes - has resulted in a rapid response from grateful residents. Yesterday morning (Thursday) 13,795€ had been pledged. British Consul Sarah Jane Morris and Gerard McGurk, the consular regional director for southern Europe, visited this week to learn more about the volunteer force, its dedication and its history. And Fire Chief Alan Lawton said his 16-strong team were left “running on empty” after a 28hour shift that was “totally exhausting”. He outlined how new hoses, breathing apparatus, radios, and lightweight protective clothing were on a “wish list” of new equipment. “In the protective clothing we have, it is like being inside an oven...but that’s what we train for. Unfortunately, equipment is lost in every major incident we attend.” EMERGENCY And despite the effort demanded in responding to an emergency call – the firemen label them “a shout” – Alan urged people to immediately call 112 if they saw a fire. “If you see smoke just ring 112 – we would rather have 1,000 false alarms than miss a call to an emergency,” he said. “And sometimes we are so busy dealing with a major incident; we don’t notice a smaller fire.” Alan’s wife Emma, who helps run the fire station and coordinate an emergency response, added: “In response to donations that we have been receiving, can I, on behalf of the team, thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts. “We are totally overwhelmed with the support, the comments, the messages, and the phone calls. We can only do what we do when people do what they do...so thank you!”
A special fund raising event is being staged at Javea’s Laguna Ribs on Sunday (18th September) in aid of the Bomberos from 4pm until midnight with live music throughout; starting with easy listening and progressing to harder rock. Entrance is free but the sales of t-shirts, raffle tickets, and an auction will all go to support the firefighters.

Representation and referenda VETERAN DEMOCRACY campaigner Harry Shindler believes Brexit should be declared “null and void” after thousands of expats were denied the right to vote. by Jack Troughton The 94-year-old believes “all is not lost” and has sent submissions to Prime Minister Theresa May and to the United Nations claiming there was a breach of human rights. He believes: “That as thousands of British expats were denied the vote in the Referendum and as this is a breach of the Articles of the Declaration of Human Rights I am asking that the UN declares Null and Void the result’. And campaigners say the UK Government seemed intent on bypassing Parliament. A petition on a second referendum limited to a debate in Westminster Hall, no authority to change anything despite thousands calling for a second ballot. The new organisation ECREU is pushing for British expats to have a voice in Government through MPS elected to constituencies to directly represent Brits abroad. Harry, who lives in Italy, is a member, as is Margaret Hales MBE, who lives on the Costa Blanca. Margaret said: “Dave Spokes of ECREU says France has 11 MPs for French expats, so why not the same for the UK? Various bodies are looking at the change of constituency boundaries and we can all write to them saying why we want representation.” A direct descendent of Suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst, Margaret said: “‘Harry reminds me of my family connections and writes to me ‘As the Pankhursts said we will win because we are right’. I know he is right! “Those radicals and rebels, Richard and Emmeline Pankhurst and their three daughters, fought for the unthinkable some 100 years ago. Today the denial of voting rights to Brits abroad and a Referendum based on fairy tales and fantasies is also worth fighting for. “No one in their right mind would think that we would be fighting the same battles a century later. But we are. And fight we will!” People are invited to submit a letter to the government, at http://www.ecreu.com/pdfs/constituency-letter.doc

Brexit: a step in the dark by Jack Troughton THERESA MAY says her government will keep its cards close to its chest over Brexit and will not give “a running commentary” on progress of negotiations or strategy. The public and Parliament face being left in the dark over plans to pull out of the European Union following the historic 23rd June referendum. In Parliament this week, the Premier was continually pressed about whether the government’s preferred deal with the bloc would include continued full membership of the single market. Mrs May said: “The new relationship will include control of the movement of people from the EU into the UK, and it will include the right deal for trade in goods and services. It would not be right for me or this government to give a running commentary on negotiations.” On her feet in the House of Commons on another occasion, she said: “It is about developing our own British model. So we will not take decisions until we are ready. We will not reveal our hand prematurely, and we will not provide a running commentary.” And Brexit Minister David Davis told the House of Lords EU select committee because the government did not want to give away its negotiating position he “might not be able to tell Parliament everything”. Mr Davis added: “I can entirely see accountability after the event; that’s very clear…in advance, I don’t think it’s possible for parliamentarians to micro-manage the process and wouldn’t give us an optimum outcome for the country.”
Strike brings flight misery THOUSANDS of passengers faced airline chaos as French air traffic controllers started their 14th round of industrial action this year on Wednesday. Ryanair cancelled 22 flights on Wednesday night and 72 on Thursday, Aer Lingus and British Airways also cancelled flights with the strike scheduled to continue until this evening (Friday). Flights routed through French air space were affected and passengers were advised to check the status of their flights with carriers, with delays and disruption possible. The action could impact on hundreds of thousands of people and Ryanair called for the European commission to act to end a dispute that has affected millions of EU citizens and businesses since the beginning of the year.

Thanks for SOS response HUNDREDS OF students at the Laude Lady Elizabeth School have thanked heroic firefighters for answering last week’s SOS - and ‘Saving Our School’. by Jack Troughton The Junior School is close to the fire station on Benitachell’s Cumbre del Sol but was kept safe from the huge blaze that devastated 820 hectares of land in the municipality and neighbouring Javea. And Head of PE Jayne Henaghan came up with the idea of how to show the school’s appreciation – a giant banner. Around 500 youngsters had the opportunity of adding a handprint, a smiley face or a heart to the banner. Members of staff are pictured sitting in front of the colourful message; hung on the school boundary facing the headquarters of the Bomberos Voluntarios de Cumbre del Sol.
Villa demolished
AN ILLEGAL villa, partly built in 2005, was demolished this week for failing to comply with urban planning regulations. Work on the building – constructed on two plots of land in Avenida Europa, Villajoyosa - was halted over 11 years ago following complaints. Jamie Ramis, Councillor for Planning said: “It’s good news that after 11 years we have been able to remove the structure which did not comply with current legislation in our town.”

Lady Gaga’s ‘Perfect Illusion’ TRADITIONALIST LADY Gaga may be a 21st Century superstar but her new single ‘Perfect Illusion’ not only warns against the dangers of modern technology...it was written on a typewriter. by Jack Troughton She stepped back in time to type the lyrics for the song destined to appear on her fifth album; collaborating with producer Mark Ronson and Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker, who flew in from Australia to take part. Lady Gaga credited Kevin with the basic idea that became the song. “I work on a typewriter and we would bounce new lyrics back and forth. We stripped everything away; changed the melody, shifted it back. I sat at the piano, Kevin was on guitar and Mark was on the bass.” Photos of her solid Underwood portable typewriter have featured online and for the first time she credited the machine as part of her writing process. She said the new song was a commentary on social media and the risks of presenting yourself as an idealised being. “I believe many of us are wondering why there are so many fake things around us. “How do we navigate through social media? How do we look at these images that we know are filtered and altered and decipher what is reality and what is a perfect illusion? “There are also a lot of things on the internet that are not reality. I think people are pressurised to keep that perfect illusion going on in their real lives...this is a song raging against it and letting it go. It’s about wanting people to re-establish the human connection.”

FORGING “UNIQUE” links, an expat charity and a town hall have successfully opened a community centre to benefit people of all nationalities. by Jack Troughton Jalon Valley HELP unveiled its new ‘Animo’ in Alcalali after outgrowing rented accommodation in the town after a four-year success story; helping people from across the region as a drop in centre. British Vice Consul Sara Munsterhjelm cut the ribbon to officially open the new premises, part of the Centro Civico and given rent free by the Alcalali Town Hall. She said it was a real privilege to attend. “I think it is an example of hard work and community spirit, and how if you really want something to happen, you can make it happen. “It is fantastic for me to see British nationals, other nationals, and Spanish nationals working together for the community. “I am sure many, many people will benefit from this new centre and others in other areas and towns will follow the example of what is happening here.” And she added: “Thanks you for your hard work and the town hall for having the vision and seeing this is what should happen to this space and making it happen.” The Vice Consul is pictured cutting the ribbon with (left) HELP President Elaine Horton and Alcalali’s Mayoress Marie Isabel Molina (right). The Alcaldesa said from the start the town hall wanted to support HELP bring the space back to life and back its “vol-
untary, humanitarian work supporting others”. She said: “I want to continue this collaboration by the town hall and this understanding between the town hall, the charity, and the community.” MESSAGE Elaine thanks her charity team for its hard work in getting Animo ready. “We had a lovely surprise just before Christmas when I got the message to say the town hall was prepared to give us accommodation in this building – not only would they give us the accommodation, but were also giving it to us rent free. “Without the generosity of the town hall, we would not be here today but still in a much-loved but tiny rented town house.” She said Animo was a place people could pop in for a chat and “share their worries and concerns” where HELP attempted to sort out problems – as well as loaning medical equipment. She said the space was used by various clubs and groups but more importantly “it is a real lifeline and a way back into the community for those who had suffered serious illness or a recent bereavement...it is a happy place.” The drop-in centre is open every Tuesday morning and this week 32 people joined the HELP volunteers. Elaine told RTN British charities and Spanish businesses were backing the project after recognising the important work HELP was doing in the region and the charity had es-
tablished an important relationship with Alcalali and other town halls. “It is a unique relationship because many charities are ‘disease specific’ but we come from a community base; it is a different angle,” she said. “Yesterday someone drove from Alcoy to pick up some medical equipment, today we are talking about helping a very sick man and we have calls coming in from everywhere. “It is about saying to the community ‘if you all pull together, stop fighting, and talk, you achieve so much more’.” For more information, visit www.jalonvalleyhelp.com.

Illegal slaughterhouse closed by Rhiannan Bell GUARDIA CIVIL officers have dismantled an illegal operation allegedly slaughtering animals without regard for their welfare. The slaughterhouse, located on a remote farm in Alicante was raided on Monday – coinciding with the Muslim feast of the lamb – by SEPRONA. The Nature Protection Service of the Alicante Guardia Civil discovered live animals surrounded by the remains of dead animals and insects. Unfortunately four lambs had already been or were being bled to death as is traditional with the halal meat preparation. The authorities revealed that the animals had no documentation and the facilities did not comply with health standards, with the animals being exposed to high temperatures and no apparent medical or health care. All of the meat already prepared was destroyed with the living animals quarantined whilst the authorities tried to find where they originated.

Call for bullfighting ban THOUSANDS OF people took to the street of Madrid on Saturday to demand an end to the ‘tradition’ of bullfighting across Spain. by Jack Troughton It is estimated around 81% of the population has declared it has no interest in the activity – while protesters want an end to cattle taking any part in local fiestas, including bull running. At the start of the march, animal rights activists held up black neckerchiefs as a symbol of the annual toll in the bullring. And protesters carried banners bearing slogans such as: ‘Bullfighting, the school of cruelty’; ‘Bullfighting, a national shame’; and ‘Torture, neither art nor culture’. The number of bullfights in Spain is steadily falling but around 2,000 events are held every year. In June, Castilla y Leon banned the killing of bulls at festivals – Catalonia became the second region to outlaw the activity in 2010; following the Canary Islands initial stand in passing legislation to end the practice. Demonstrators travelled from across the country to the capital for a show of strength. One Seville resident taking to the streets said: “Bulls feel and they suffer...bullfights are a national shame.” And a Madrid resident added: “I think our laws should prohibit the torture of animals as a form of entertainment.” Opinion polls suggest support is falling but supporters of
bullfighting – known as ‘afficianados’ – believe it is an ancient art form deeply rooted in Spanish culture. They name acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy in their ranks. And different forms of bull running - including the Pamplona fiesta of San Fermin – attract a loyal crowd with many tourists travelling across the globe to take part. Pictured is a protester in Denia earlier this summer in a demonstration against the annual ‘bous al la mar’ – bulls to the sea.
Son searches for father
A BRITISH man is desperately trying to locate his father whom he has not heard from in three months. Kevin McCarrick moved from Liverpool to the Old Town area of Benidorm in November 2015 with his two Jack Russell’s, Bonnie and Jack. He was in contact with his son, also called Kevin, in the UK until June this year. The son, who lives in Blackpool, told RTN that he was very worried about his father particularly because of his age. He said: “I have tried several avenues to locate my father, including the British Consulate in Alicante and the HELP International Benidorm, which is also trying to help me find him. His phone has been disconnected and I am very concerned about his welfare.” If you have seen Kevin in the area please either contact his son directly on 0044 793 209 0945 or Bill Steel, President of HELP International Benidorm 607 387 040.

Thrilling Vuelta THE COSTA Blanca turned out to watch the highly-tuned athletes riding in Spain’s Vuelta fly by in a thrilling contest. by Jack Troughton The final stages of the famous cycle race came through the region with Columbian Nairo Quintana narrowly beating Britain’s Chris Froome – the winner of the Tour de France in July – into second place. Froome, 31, riding for Team Sky, was bidding to be the first man to win both races in the same season but was 1 minute and 23 seconds behind 26-year-old Quintana when the final stage reached Madrid on Sunday. However, Froome did stamp his authority on Stage 19, seemingly flying the 37km in the time trial from Javea to Calpe; one of the most picturesque parts of the race, taking in Benitachell, Teulada, Moraira and the coastal road through to Calpe. The Briton won the stage and climbed onto the podium but his rival Quintana, riding for the Movistar team, did
enough to hang onto first place overall despite finishing 11th over the stage. And on Saturday as the cyclists left Benidorm on the 193.2km Stage 20 to el Alto de Aitana the two riders played cat and mouse on the gruelling ride – Froome constantly attacked but was unable to open up a lead over Quintana. RTN reader Geoff Farrimond caught the action as the race went through Parcent. His picture shows Froome at the head of a group of cyclists – rival Quintana just three places behind. Cycling fans and spectators enjoyed the drama of the race – and the Vuelta circus with attractions laid on in Javea and Calpe and youngsters and adults queuing for a massive range of souvenirs being handed out. The race is big business and runs like a well-oiled machine with riders followed by team cars and safety vehicles. During the time trial every rider also had a police escort, officer effortlessly travelling the road on huge BMW motorbikes.

A vintage year 14
16 - 22 SEPT 2016
by Jack Troughton SILVER MEDALIST Alejandra Quereda – back from Olympic Games in Rio – was guest of honour at a ceremony to launch the 2016 vintage of the Moscatell grape in the Marina Alta. The museum of the historic Riu Rau del Bancal Roig – set in vineyards in Teulada – was the venue chosen by winegrowers and bodega owners of the ‘Denominacion de origin protegida de Alicante’ for the ceremony. Alejandra (pictured) was captain of the successful Spanish rhythmic gymnastics team in Brazil and cut the first grapes, blessed by priest Don Vicent Solera. Growers, wine producers and town halls in the area were asked by the regional regulation committee to unite and support the re-evaluation of Moscatell as a stand-alone beverage rather than a drink offered free at the end of a meal.

Armed robbers arrested by Caroline Tyszka NATIONAL POLICE officers have arrested three people alleged to have used a sawn-off shotgun in an Elche robbery. The three men, aged 40, 46, and 51 used the stolen weapon intimidate workers at a local business before stealing a collection box containing 1000 euros. Officers later discovered a hideout in fields located nearby – recovering the gun allegedly used to commit the robbery and in other crimes. The gang´s method has been linked the trio to other crimes. One bandit would enter the target premises with the gun, whilst another stood as lookout, and the third was waited in a nearby vehicle as the getaway driver. Officers were also able to attribute an Elche pharmacy theft to the group as well as discovering that the gun was stolen from a vehicle in November 2015.

Almond theft cracked by Rhiannan Bell
Murcia’s Guardia Civil and Local Police in Pozo Estrecho joined forces in an investigation that resulted in the arrest of three family members for the attempted theft of 15 tons of almonds worth 30,000 €. The almonds were being stored on a farm in the El Albujón area - as is usual at this time of year, ripe almonds are collected from the campo and left to dry out at selected farms before going on to be shelled and prepared for the shop shelves. In recent years there has been an increase in almond theft from these storage farms and the authorities set up an operation that would increase surveillance around vulnerable properties. During one early morning surveillance exercise, a vehicle was spotted circling the almond warehouse in El Albujón, which raised suspicions and led to further examination of the facility. Police officers found a section of fencing that had been compromised and just inside, several sacks which had been filled with almonds presumably with shovels lying nearby. Subsequently, the officers contacted the farm owner and identification of the would-be thieves was made. Three males, one of them a minor, all living locally, were arrested and charged with theft.

Suelo Floor Mortgage Clause New success at Denia courts. Today again we would like to talk about a new judgment ruled in favour of a client we represent, in which the Court of First Instance Number 3 in Denia, has been charged for: 1. Anullment of a clause in the mortgage loan deed drafted by the bank, in which the stated delay interest was 18%, to be charged in the event of a late payment. Thus, according to our request, the court not only has been declared unfair and void this clause, but also asked the bank to pay back to our clients the money charged for the delay interests at 18%, when our client was in financial difficulties and was not able to cope promptly with his obligations to the bank. 2. Likewise the court has declared void the clauses relative to the termination of the contract, for which the bank reserved for itself the right to terminate the contract and claim for the entire outstanding capital, in the event of the client delay any payment, or breach of any of the obligations contained in the deed of mortgage. Thus, as the Supreme Court has already stated in its judgment of 23 December 2015, such clauses are abusive because they are not proportional, because, for a minimum and not relevant breach, the bank is allowed to
terminate the contract. 3. Also the court has declared void the Mortgage Floor Suelo Clause stated on the mortgage deed, condemning the bank, as requested to: . - Return the overcharged interest by the action of this clause from the date of signing the contract, plus legal interests. . - Recalculate the loan amortization table, which should means that the outstanding capital to be paid to the bank will be reduced. We should note that the bank has already paid â‚Ź 29,500 in the courts account to meet part of their responsibilities with our client. Therefore, if you have a mortgage with a Mortgage Floor Suelo Clause (limitation of the interest,) even if your bank tells you that it will not apply again or offers you a deal, you must know that you can claim with the possibility of success (if the bank did not explain the details of this clause), for the clause to be declared null and void, but also to be paid back the overpaid interest plus interest, and the recalculation of the amortization table, which will mean that the outstanding
principal will also be lower. It is also possible that once we review your mortgage deed, we find other clauses which are also could damage your rights. Make sure that you claim correctly. We are experts. Contact us and we’ll help.

Running for HELP
SISTERS CAROLINE and Laura Hubble are ready to pound the streets in memory of their “lovely Daddy” Peter who lost a short battle with cancer earlier this year – and want to raise money for Jalon Valley HELP. by Jack Troughton They are taking on the 10 mile Great South Run next month, a road race through Portsmouth – leaving their comfort zones to push themselves to the limit but plan to smile through the pain barrier in memory of their father. Caroline and Laura are running as a way of raising money for the charity as a thank-you for the help received when Peter, from Benissa, was ill. They said HELP “provided great support to the whole family when Dad was ill” and hope Peter’s friends in Spain will support the venture so other in need can be supported by the charity. The girls have set up a ‘Just Giving’ page to receive donations and sponsorship, go to www.justgiving.com (hubblegirlsrun). The sisters set a target of £500 and as RTN went to press have already raised almost double. Laura said: “Caroline and I are taking part in this year’s Great South Run in memory of our lovely Daddy who sadly passed away earlier this year. During his short battle with cancer, dad and, indeed, the whole family were provided with great support by the volunteers at the Jalon Valley HELP charity. “We would love and appreciate it if you could help us give something back, to insure others in need can continue to benefit from the fantastic work this amazing charity does.”

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Mars trines with Uranus midweek and this opens the door of opportunity to you. Energised and ready to move on to pastures new, you are in for a surprise, and it will be just what you need to spur you on to where you should be; which is not where you are right now. Take the opportunity coming your way and make of it whatever you possibly can! The Sun enters into your twin planet of Libra bringing you balance and equilibrium as a clear way forward is illuminated. You have been badly let down by someone recently and because you are such a loyal and faithful soul you put all of you into the loving care you give to others. Time now for you to finally take back some love for yourself.
The entry of the Sun shines a light on the matters now so very close to your heart. You have been testing somebody and now you have to make a decision that is based on what is best for all concerned. Love is an energy that you freely give out to others, but when it is time to take what you deserve then look for the happiness that you have earned!
Mars trines with both dwarf planet Kora and Uranus this week. There may be a sting in your tail but there is love and devotion in your heart; and nothing is going to rain on your parade. You can have a bee in your bonnet about something but you have truly a heart of gold and the caring sensitivity of your tireless devotion benefits all concerned. Jupiter is ensconced in Libra bringing balance to a situation Turn to your highly psychic senses and get your teeth into a that appears to be veering out of control. After a week of project that is worthy of you. It is time that you were recogboth silly and irritating little things going wrong there has nised for what you do and this may mean going out on a limb! Mercury trines Pluto and this means a concentration of to be some reward somewhere. Bite your tongue, because your intelligence, your concentration and your willpower; to silence is the best way ahead right now, and enjoy the best get this show where it should be right now of good luck that your planetary leader can bring Moon energies may be on the wane right now, but you are Do not take sides right now, because you don’t have to do not downhearted after having told someone a few home this if you don’t want to. In hindsight you would never have truths. If people respect you they would be able to see your got involved in the current matter, but it is about to implode side of the coin right now! This is your time, and you are and you would do well to walk away with your head held about to make the subtle changes that you need to ensure high. When choices are made, just show others that, above that a situation that forces compromise never happens again all, you aren’t to be messed with, now or ever! The brief passing of the Sun activates the positive energies of Uranus, planet of new ideas and invention. Above all seize the opportunity that is panning out for you. There will be an agonising decision, but you can think on your feet; and now that there are no more complications to hold you back, you don’t have to keep looking over your shoulder! Pluto centres on a trine with Mercury this week. This means that you have to be very careful to send out a clear message of your intention. Many will not wish to hear it, but then the truth hurts only those who do not have your true interests at heart right now. If they don’t support you now, then they don’t know who you are, and maybe they never did
Be a part of a new chapter as rules and regulations seem to be adapting to your way of thinking. The regeneration comes from a double influence of Scorpio as Mars currently trines Uranus, your planetary leader. Mars rules Scorpio and Scorpio is exalted in Uranus, so go ahead say what you think, this is a good time to be outspoken! A harmonious time as Venus sextiles with Mars. There is a strong focus on the artistic and creative and especially if you actually use some tools in your actions. The masculine treaty of Mars mixes effortlessly with the strong influence of Venus to produce something very special, which may go on to have a lasting effect on your emotional life.

Kenny, I am so frightened when people start talking about Spiritual matters. It comes from the past when I saw things as a child. My parents said it wasn’t godly and I had to walk away. Is it too late to come back? How do I lose my fear? Qwen T.K. Qwen it is never too late to take on Spirit! In the past many people saw clairvoyant amd mediumistic gifts as wicked and sinful, going against God. Thankfully times have changed and things are more open. I would ask you to be brave and write down some of those stories of the past when you saw things. This was Spirit making an initial contact with your sensitive and loving soul. I will help you with the removal of fear, I promise you, because there is nothing to fear. Love will find a way straight to your soul and put you back to where you so rightly belong!
If It’s Your Birthday This Week Expect change as the result of contemplation and desire. Those who allow themselves the luxury of knowing their innermost self will prosper in the astrological year ahead and show others the wisdom that is their way!

Printer problem Hi Aunty, I hope you can help me, I recently changed from Windows 8/1 to Windows 10 now my printer won’t work, when I switch on all instruction are in Spanish and I cannot find “idioma” to change to English I have a sign bottom right that says printer problem . I have put in the disc which came with printer canon mp 190 pixma but still comes up in Spanish. On Windows 8/1 everything was working fine. Thanks Rob Response: Apparently there are no W10 drivers for that printer. People have overcome this by installing the W8.1 drivers. Best location for the latest drivers is from the Cannon website, rather than from the disc that came with the printer.
If it continues to install in Spanish, then perhaps the location settings in your W10 installation are showing Spanish, and need to be changed to English before you install them Unless you mean your printer display is in Spanish and not English, in
which case a quick search on Google suggests the following changes language options on Pixma Printers. Turn On Printer Settings Button Device Settings Dev User Setting Language Selection

Prince (or princess) of spiders by Jack Troughton PHOTOGRAPHER ALEC Bettney named this rather large and hairy example of a Spanish spider William after the Prince of Wales – but admitted it could easily be a Kate! He was cleaning up around his villa near Xativa when arachnid appeared in the pool – measuring 56mm in length with large mouth parts. “I can’t correctly identify its name, so I called it William,” said Alec. “Although, it could be a Kate.” He admitted he was a little wary of eight-legged beasties after being bitten nine weeks ago on his elbow, which needed medical treatment. “It has still not fully healed; there are two puncture holes 7mm apart. “Some nine hours later, the site was swollen and purple and red rings extended out which extended put to about the size of an egg. Together with the muscle cramps, it was identified as the Brown Recluse spider, and quite common in Spain, although I never saw the critter responsible.” Alec added: “The Brown Recluse, as the name suggests, does not attack but prefers to hide in dark areas; and that includes your shoes and clothes; and that would be an unfortunate contact attack.” He believes there is something like 1,700 species of spider making themselves at home in Spain. Most are completely harmless – or have a bite that is little more than a wasp sting. Alec is a professional photographer now based in Torre de Lloris, near Xativa, and as well as a fascination with nature, welcomes commissions for all forms of photographic work. He can be contacted by calling 630 981 229 or by email to ibizafixit@yahoo.com.

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// ´An Evening with Michael Douglas´ has been set up at London´s Drury Lane Theatre on Sunday 30th October, and Michael D, son of Kirk, who turns 72 later this month, promises to share ‘on-screen and backstage tales’ as well as opening up the floor to the audience for a question and answer session. “I’m so looking forward to being in London at the renowned Drury Lane Theatre answering questions from a British audience,’ said Michael, who has won five Golden Globes, an Emmy, two Academy Awards, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Institute. It will interesting if the Q and A session gets onto the subject of 2013 TV movie ´Behind the Candelabra´ that starred Douglas as Liberace and Matt Damon as his lover, as it was not received terribly well. Take deep breaths Michael. Sir Michael Philip “Mick” Jagger, KBE turned 73 in July, and last week was reported as having negotiated a financial deal with ballerina Melanie Hamrick, 29, who’s pregnant with his eighth child, to provide for her and the baby after the little one arrives in December. “Mick has always taken his responsibilities seriously,” a source told the Mirror, who also stated “they’re not in a serious relationship but they remain very close.” Although Mick was surprised by the pregnancy news in July, he´ll reportedly be giving Melanie $15,000 a month until their child reaches adulthood, plus a house. Melanie, who was a dancer with the American Ballet Theatre, conceived Mick’s child while the Rolling Stones were touring in South America earlier this year. Melanie is Mick’s fifth baby momma, the other children ranging from 17 to 45. Mick! MICK!
Care like your freedom depends on it! In a time when celebrity, fame and success have all rolled together into one giant ugly ball, it’s an extremely pleasant change to read about a group getting back together with the sole purpose of spreading the word of love. ´The Black Eyed Peas´ formed in Los Angeles in 1995, and their first major success was a full eight years later in 2003 when ´Where Is the Love? ´topped the charts in 13 countries, including the UK. The group are releasing a special version of the song in response to recent world events with spokesman will.i.am saying “the move has been influenced by the terrorist attacks in Paris, Belgium and Turkey, as well as the deaths of two young Americans Philando Castile and Alton Sterling.” Powerful stuff indeed! “Care like your freedom depends on it,” added will.i.am. Whereisthelove.com is set up with links for fans to donate to the events that inspired the re-release. The group’s reasons for re-forming are truly an act of love and understanding, so why not watch the video and get involved. The Black Eyed Peas - Where Is The Love? Freddie Mercury, who would have been 70 on Monday 5 September, has quite rightly been honoured with a Blue Plaque outside his childhood home in Feltham, West London. He was born in Zanzibar and grew up there and in India, before moving with his family to their humble home in Middlesex. The plaque simply reads ‘Freddie Mercury (Fred Bulsara) 1946-1991 Singer and Songwriter lived here.’ His sister Kashmira Cooke said she and her mother are ‘proud and pleased’ he will be amongst other famous names for ever. Queen guitarist Brian May said at the unveiling “Freddie was a shy boy embarrassed by still living with his mum, so he often slept on people’s floors to feel like he had broken away.” Honest! Freddie’s parents Jer and Bomi Bulsara bought the terrace house at 22 Gladstone Avenue in 1964. Wonderful Stuff!
Justin Bieber has had many tags over the years, but ´footballer? ´ According to reports, the reformed bad boy is in talks to appear in a Harvey Weinsteinproduced blockbuster about Spanish football team Real Madrid, and 22 year old Canadian JB will reportedly play an up-and-coming American player who is whisked across the Atlantic to play in Europe and explodes to athletic fame as an ‘overnight sensation’. Ronaldo is also in talks, although he won’t need much acting prowess for the scenes where he’s kicking a ball around or doing ab crunches, and Clint Eastwood is also reportedly in talks to star as Bieber’s on-screen grandfather. A source told The Mirror “It´s a great opportunity for Justin, and could be one of the biggest films of 2017 if all of his fans and the fans of Ronaldo go to the cinema.” Beebs playing football?

Sara Bell life&leis re ask Sara u ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// by
Life Coach
WITH A background in family and matrimonial mediation, Life Coach Sara Bell helps Readers with their daily worries. If you are having difficulties with relationships, family, work or any other aspect of your life, then help is at hand.
Dead end job
I am 20 and work at car valeting. It’s for a good, local company - the guys are great, and I have been there for two years. Also the money isn’t bad, we have a great laugh, and it keeps me fit. It’s really not like work at all. My problem is that I think at 20 I should be thinking about progressing in some way. My parents say it’s ok but you can’t still be working that job at 40, and they are right. It’s a young guys job, with a young guy’s salary, and although I love it, I am feeling I need to think about making it on my own somehow.
You could leave the job you love, and go for something with more of a future, but would you be happy? Alternatively, have you ever considered starting your own car valeting service? You could try mobile at first, then think about having your own premises. This might be a way of continuing the job you love, and having your own business to build on. Write to Sara in confidence. A pseudonym will be used if you wish. Sara reads all letters and can give a personal reply. My daughter has finished college and has been sitting around the house since June. She had a part time job but chucked it in saying she couldn’t stand working there anymore. We had previously told her that she couldn’t leave her job, (working on the tills in a DIY store), but she did anyway. Since then she hasn’t tried to get other work, but expects us to fund her social life. She does nothing around the house, and won’t even walk the dog she badgered us to get her. What can we do? If she was my daughter, I wouldn’t be funding her social life for a start. If she can go out enjoying herself, she can go out and work. If she won’t find a job, then you must tell her she has to return to education and enrol on a college course. Sit down with her and apply for jobs online to make sure she is actually trying. Give her a month to turn the situation around herself, or tell her you will make the decisions for her.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Step by Step Spanish Last week we started looking at different ways of talking about the future, focusing on the most common one, the future of intention (voy a, vamos a etc.) You won’t find this form in that big white verb book you have propping up the furniture in your living room as it doesn’t officially count as a tense, but from the point of view of communication it fulfills an important function. I ended up the article scaring you to death about pronunciation. Actually, about half an hour after I’d sent the article off, I realized I could have made it even worse by highlighting the “b” “v” confusion. That would have given us “¿Qué va a hacer?” potentially sounding like “kebasé”. Incidentally, if you were to ask a Spanish person if that is what they say, they are sure to deny it. The same happens to us in English, we don’t think we say “hambag” instead of “handbag” and would deny the accusation – but actually we do, unless we’re Lady Bracknell of course. Right, let’s get back to the point!! There are a few more things to say about this “going to” form. As well as describing intentions, it also describes what we can call “predictions based on present evidence”. For example, we look up at the heavens, see the storm clouds gathering and say “Va a llover” (It’s going to rain), or we watch a car heading for a tree and say “Va a chocar” (It’s going to crash). We would assume this is not an intention; it is just something we can see is
inevitably going to happen based on our observation. Two more points before we leave this one behind. As English speakers we should be very careful about translating directly across from one language to the other. There are instances when we have to use this “future of intention” form in Spanish when in English we don’t have to. For example, in English I can say “What are you doing after the party?” or “I’m phoning Bill tomorrow”. As these sentences refer to the future, in Spanish we have to say “¿Que vais a hacer después de la fiesta?” (Notice I’ve opted for the plural “you” this time) and “Voy a llamar a Bill mañana”. Finally, here’s another little trick. It will be easier for those who have learnt the past continuous tense (the –aba one) but really it can be used straight away by anybody! We can put this form into the past to say “I was going to”. This is a good phrase for making lame excuses. I will now elaborate. The present tense of “ir” which we are current using goes like this: Voy, vas, va, vamos, vais, van. If we put this same verb into the past continuous tense it goes like this: Iba, ibas, iba, íbamos, ibais, iban.
So, for example, if “vamos a” means “we ARE going to”, then “íbamos a” means “we WERE going to”. Get it? Now when someone catches you out on the phone you can say: “¡Oh José! ¡Te iba a llamar!” (Oh Joe, I was going to phone you!) and it sounds as insincere in Spanish as it does in English. Welcome back to the real world of communication!

Simon & Garfunkel cause marital meltdown
PURGATORY as you sinners know - okay not you (snort!) - is the halfway house twixt heaven & hell, where spirits are subjected to harsh punishment – a bit like watching an eternity of ‘Loose Women.’
by
Chris Ashley
Writer & Broadcaster
Probably the closest us earth bound mortals get to this merciless torment is a long distance bus ride - this truly is a bottomless pit of damnation. Mind you, as always, the Yanks are bigger & better in the loony tunes stakes (The Donald anyone?). A previous Mrs Ashley & I inspired by Simon & Garfunkel’s anthem boarded a Greyhound Bus to look for America. Now Paul or Art, not sure which one ,with Cathy met all sorts of interesting & glamorous people on the bus – like the spy in a gaberdine suit with the bow tie that’s actually a camera. All well and good for them, our experience was more like Jasper Carrott’s ‘Nutter On The Bus.’ The thing about long distance bus travel with a companion is you’ve got to truly love each other. Sadly somewhere between Bangor Maine & Billings Montana (2.500 miles) we realised we really didn’t like each other very much. To try and relight the dying embers of our exceedingly short marital life we left S&G and Cathy to their own devices and decided to dally in Billings. Oh dear oh dear! - this place was like Chernobyl with the fun squeezed out. It’s very close to where General Custer & 268 of his troops died - although the thought of returning to Billings may have been so depressing it was actually a suicide pact. Now look what I’ve gone and done – made us all doleful. To cheer up I’m off to ‘Duncan’s Barbershop For The Discerning Gentleman’. As I’ve now got more hair in my ears than on the noggin the actual cropping takes 5 minutes – the chat takes up the rest of the hour. Duncan is a veritable cornucopia of musical trivia. For example, he can tell you the name of the bass guitarist playing the instantly recognisable opening riff to ‘I Heard Through The Grapevine’ (James Jamerson since you didn’t ask) & that Charles Manson auditioned to be one of the Monkees. Old school barbers – you can’t beat ‘em. Although he’s never once asked “Anything for the weekend Sir?” Probably thinking “Buy a lottery ticket sunshine – better odds.” Any input from you gratefully received – ashleybobble@hotmail.com

Specsavers and RNIB focus on eye health
National Eye Health Week takes place from the 19th to the 25th of September in the UK. This is a campaign to encourage everyone to take better care of their eyes and have regular sight tests. Specsavers Opticas in Spain are taking this opportunity to announce their partnership with the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) to support its vital work, help educate people about eye health and to raise awareness of how regular eye tests can help reduce preventable sight loss. Specsavers and RNIB recently conducted an important study of the state of the UK’s eyes which revealed that more than six million people in the UK live with sight-threatening conditions or uncorrected refractive error. Some may not yet be experiencing any symptoms and may have no idea that anything is wrong. Of these, more than two million people (3.08% of the UK population) are living with sight loss that has a significant impact on their daily lives. This figure is set to increase to more than 2.7 million by 2030, driven by an increase in the UK’s ageing demographic. Although nearly half of all cases of sight loss in the UK could have been prevented, 14 million people in Britain are not having an eye test as recommended at least every two years. According to a study by Spain’s National Institute of Statistics in 2008, in Spain 979,200 people are suffering a visual disability, 2.14% of the population. Of these 20,900 are people classed with low vision, and there are 58,3000 cases of blindness. This figure is increasing every day, with 3,000 new members joining the blind charity ONCE each year and as of June 2016 there are
72,091 ONCE members who are classed as legally blind. It is not simply the cost to the way of life of these people that is important to note. Independent research commissioned by RNIB estimates that the total cost of sight loss to the UK economy is in the region of £28 billion a year. In Spain, it was calculated to be 358 million Euros in 2008 and increasing. This shows how vital it is to get the message out there that you need to take care of your eyes, and make sure everyone has sight tests every two years from the age of three. RNIB Group Vice Chair Eleanor Southwood says: “Stopping people losing their sight unnecessarily is a goal we share with Specsavers. We are absolutely committed to working together to improve the eye health of the nation.” Specsavers Opticas are currently offering free comprehensive eye tests which include health checks and during the month of September they have an eye health information point in store, with useful information about caring for your eyes available to take away. To find your nearest store and book a free eye test, visit www. specsavers.es to find out more about National Eye Health Week and get more eye health advice visit www.visionmatters.org.uk. Alfaz fantasy football league by patricia thompson The Premier League & the Alfaz Fantasy Football League was back in action after an International Break. I’m not a much in favour of these breaks because it slows down the momentum of the Fantasy just as we are beginning to get going but for once it seems to have rejuvenated all the Teams in the Premier League as the Nine Premier League games produced for the Fantasy 31 goals, only 2 clean sheets,39 yellow cards and for the 2nd time this Season no red ones. Dave Morris’s team Casa Stretford La Nucia & Pauline’s Vodka Army became the 3rd & 4th teams to reach the Summit of the A.F.F.L. when they both became joint leaders.Dave ,who is an avid Manchester United Fan was having a bad Weekend after United’s Derby defeat until we totted up his Fantasy points and gave him a lift. Pauline’s Vodka Army have always been around the top places over the Years in our Fantasy.Last Weeks Leaders Mike’s Super Saints dropped down 15 places after only managing to score 2 points.Richard’s team Hastag Ya Mummy are in 3rd place just 2 points behind the early pace setters. At the other end of the Table Jo’s Team Jo Jo wants a Dog trail Glenda’s Spanish Smoggies by 4 points. In our Mark Carter Ladies Section Pauline’s Vodka Army have opened up a substantial 20 point lead at the top over Joanna’s team Capitol City.Alison’s Foxywise are in 3rd place
only 1 point behind Joanna’s team.Down at the foot of the table we have the same situation as in the main League with Jo Jo wants a Dog chasing the Spanish Smoggies. Hup Hannah City are in pole position to win our 20 Euro voucher which is sponsored by Quick Save, the only British Supermarket in Albir, situated opposite the Cricket Ground. They have an 8 point advantage over Julie’s team The Gers. We have new leaders in our U.K.T.V.Spain Junior League with Teigar’s Tigers taking over from Oh ! South London who have slipped down to 3rd.Harley’s Ginger Ninjar have jumped up 5 places to 2nd. Former leaders Leo’s Powerblue Boys are still in contention in 4th place only 10 points behind the Leaders. Down in the basement Roo & Woos Wombles are struggling to get going this Season and are now 12 points adrift of Luca’s Indestructables. Our Leonard Knowles Construction Golden Boot League is wide open at both ends of the Table. Only 11 points separate the top 5 teams. At the moment Kevin’s team One for the Road have held on to the top spot for 3 weeks running but they are now coming under pressure from Eric’s Peaky Blinders who are only 2 points behind.Manu’s Coy 2 Benidorm are in 3rd place then comes Dave’s Jukebox Mackems. Arsenal’s Peta Cech’s own goal didn’t help Mitchell’s Bottom placed Suplex City in fact it left them with a minus 3 score leaving them trailing Nigel’s No Chance & Kevin’s El Portet Elite by 8
points. Manager of the Month for September is being kindly sponsored by the Brew Rock, situated right on the front in Albir who provide a La Carte Menu as well as live Music everyday from 5 pm.With only 1 week gone Teigar’s Tigers lead Hup Hannah City by only 2 points. Hannah’s Hotspurs & Lee’s Pineapple Chunks are well in contention for this super meal for 2 in 3rd & 4th place. Rafters has changed hands so we have been lucky enough to secure Steve & Jo from The 2 C ‘s in Alfaz to carry on with our super Breakfast for 2 for the fastest moving Men’s team each week. This week’s winner is Paul whose team Elite Kitchen,Swinton moved up 139 places to No 105 in the main League. The draw for our Preliminary Round of RTN K.O. Cup Competition will soon be up on our super new website which is www.alfazffl.com. Don’t forget you can also view all our Mini-Leagues as well as keep a check on how your Team is performing in the early part of the Season by logging on.

life&leisure #sports ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Pego Golf Society “Pairs Texas Scramble” Competition by patricia thompson The greens at Oliva Nova were aerated last week, but that did not stop 42 members and guests from turning out today for the Pairs Texas Scramble. It is much more difficult to play Pairs than normal Texas Scramble with four people, so consequently the scores are always higher. It was very warm and sultry and sometimes difficult to get a breath, but everybody got round in one piece. The greens were bumpy all over, and running very slow, as they were only one week since aerating them. We were delighted to have four guests today, and they were Derek Lindley, Dave Smith, Pete Wilson and Richard Morris, and all were warmly welcomed by our Captain David O’Connor. In the main part of the competition, the results were as follows Pairs Texas Scramble Results 1st Place Score:- 68 was the team of Rob Westlands and John Guest. 2nd Place Score:- 69 was the team of Malcolm Wise and Tony Jerman 3rd Place Score:- 69 was the team of Paul Trigwell and Danny Herron 4th Place Score:- 70 was the team of Brian Barden and Jean Taylor All very close with only two shots between the top four teams, so well played to all, especially Rob and John with a net 68 There were three 2’s today, and they were by Martin Gates, Roger Brown and David Smith. The “Balls in the Water” prize numbered 109 balls in the water and that was won by Russ Peters who kindly donated all of it to a local charity. Well done Russ, and good to see you back with a new knee. Nearest the hole at Hole 3 with their tee shot was Mike Cuerden with 3.3 meters, and at hole 16, the closest was Martin Gates with 5.8 meters. Finally Roger Miller has his 77th Birthday , and he presented two bottles of red wine for the team who were 14th in the list, and that was won by Colin Foster and Colin Davies. Birthday congrats to Roger and well done to the recipients of the wine. Next Tuesday we are having “Captain’s Day Celebration” honouring our Captain for 2016, namely David O’Connor, when a team representing the Captain and a team from the Vice
Captain meet in a 20 a side match play competition, for the coveted trophy. The will be a lot of prizes to be had on the course, with the usual “watering holes for the players should they need it. Please contact our secretary and send an e-mail to Penny Barden at pegohandicapsec@ gmail.com or enter through our website www.pegogolfsociety.com. A warm welcome awaits you.

Suzuki Grand Vitara THE WORD ‘grand’ is slowly creeping into motoring parlance. Only recently I tested the Chrysler Grand Voyager, which was certainly a large and capable people mover. So now I find myself confronted by another big vehicle, this time in the guise of the Suzuki Grand Vitara. It’s not as cumbersome as the Chrysler but the Japanese manufacturer uses the adjective to distinguish this large five-door model from the smaller three-door. Now that I have two little daughters, each with bulky car seats, such sizeable vehicles have become increasingly appealing. Inside the Vitara there is plenty of room and the black leather interior is stylish and robust, like the vehicle in general. With its burgundy finish and distinctive chrome Suzuki logo on the grille it is certainly eye-catching as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. Dubbed a ‘soft roader’ Suzuki first introduced its rugged Grand Vitara in 1988, when I was still at school. Twenty-five years on and there are a plethora of 4x4s to choose from manufacturers that once shied away from this marketplace such as BMW, no doubt swayed by Suzuki’s success. And so it is somewhat gratifying to note that Suzuki has stuck to its guns with the model name and not decided to replace it or radically change the vehicle. Externally this third generation model doesn’t really seem to have changed much at all although perhaps looking slightly bulkier and modern; testament to a strong design in the first place. I wonder did Land Rover draw inspiration from this model for its Freelander? There do seem to be
similarities in its styling. The last time I drove a Grand Vitara it was fitted with a punchy but quite thirsty petrol engine. This time I am presented with a more frugal diesel unit. A decade ago it was hard to find a Suzuki with a diesel engine but now they are readily available across the whole range. The manufacturer claims that the 1.9 litre diesel unit fitted to this vehicle returns almost 40mpg and that it travels almost 400 miles on a tank. A journey to Brighton allows me to put it through its paces and it proves to be a competent motorway cruiser with very little buffeting despite relatively high winds. The steering wheel mounted cruise control is easy to operate. In these days of six and seven speed gearboxes it is quite surprising to only have a five-speed manual but this low ratio version enables it to be far more productive off road, when required. This becomes useful when my oldest daughter suddenly alerts us to the fact that she wants to go to the toilet. We happen to be passing a field and the gate is open so no better time to do a spot of off-roading and find a suitable venue.

CrossRoads has the popular blues harmonica performer and singer and entertainer Buddy Paul (pictured) as the musical director to keep the ‘open-mic’ entertainment in order and there is a sign up board. Crossroaders enjoy a morning of fun – coffee or something stronger, and food is available – and a donation of 5€ is invited to help offset costs. More information is available at www.
