Brexit “status quo” SPAIN WILL work hard to maintain its close relationship with the UK and the expats who have made their home in the sun, the British Consul predicted this week. by jack troughton

Sarah-Jane Morris spoke to the Association of Foreign Property Owners in Calpe on Tuesday with a positive message in uncertainty following the ‘leave’ decision in June’s referendum. She said voters had chosen to leave the European Union. “We still don’t know what that looks like. People ask about a ‘hard Brexit’ or a ‘soft Brexit’…I honestly don’t know.” However, Mrs Morris said: “Whatever the outcome is, Spain will make a particular effort to make sure there is some kind of status quo for people living here.

BRITISH CONSUL Sarah-Jane Morris bravely put her head above the parapet this week and spread a little good cheer to ease Brexit worries amongst the expat population along the Costas. Based in Madrid with direct links to the Spanish government, she believes good sense will prevail and a status quo agreed. Months have flown by since the historic June vote to leave the EU and scare stories continue to make headlines; the consequences of ‘hard’ or ‘soft’ Brexit changing depending on which politician at home or in Europe decides to throw in his sixpenny worth. Mrs Morris is not a politician but is at least prepared to look at the practicalities of living abroad and has the links with Spanish establishment to gauge the true feeling away from the glare of publicity…and share it with us. Back at RTN Towers, the Editor scooped a win with a wager on the success of the new Operation Captura. Each year a new appeal seems to bring almost instant results and following last week´s front page it seemed a dead cert someone would very quickly have his collar felt. This time it is an alleged paedophile on his way home to face justice – arrested only hours after the new campaign was launched. Run by Crimestoppers in conjunction with the National Crime Agency and the Spanish authorities, it has enjoyed amazing success with the public playing a very full part.

Sisters win for ‘Daddy’ by Jack Troughton DEDICATED SISTERS Caroline and Laura Hubble successfully completed the Great South Run in memory of their “lovely Daddy” Peter and raised over £1,870 for Jalon Valley HELP. The girls (pictured) ran together and completed the 10-mile course in 2 hours, 1 minute and 11 seconds – succeeding with a ‘thank-you’ to a charity that supported their father through a short battle with cancer earlier this year. They said they left their comfort zones to pound the streets and push themselves to the limit to honour Peter, who lived in Benissa, and HELP which supported their late father and the whole family though a “sad time”. The Great South Run is a fast and flat course running through the iconic sights of Southsea and Portsmouth - including the Historic Dockyard, home of HMS Victory finishing on the seafront with a view of the Isle of Wight. The sisters said they wanted to give something back to HELP “to insure others in need can continue to benefit from the fantastic work this amazing charity does.” Inititially they set a target of £500 but to date £1,900 has been raised through the Just Giving fundraising page and donations can still be made; just go to www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/hubblegirlsrun.

Be prepared CELIA DRINKALL loves her life in Spain but advises all expats to “be prepared” and have a game plan for a ‘rainy day’. A member of the British Consulate’s ‘Our Local Ambassador’ scheme, Celia retired to San Pedro del Pinatar but was widowed four years ago – but decided to stay in Murcia where she has a wide circle of friends. And she likes to keep busy and is an active member of ADAPT, an English-speaking association of expats in the town helping expats integrate, and working with charity groups. Celia has now lived in Spain for 10 years having moved from the Nottingham area. “I love it here; we decided to move to Spain many years ago, it wasn’t a flash in the pan, we had a holiday home in the Costa del Sol. “We were always coming to Spain; we discovered this area and immediately fell in love with San Pedro. After my husband died, the children asked ‘are you coming home?’ I said ‘this is my home’.” Celia attended a conference on Alzheimer’s organised by the British Embassy and because of her involvement with a large number of groups in the area was invited to join the OLA scheme; designed to help people make a success of their lives in Spain. She advises everyone to try and learn the language and attempt to use it. “I know it is difficult but it is no use going to classes and never having the confidence to use it...the more you use it, the more confident you get. “I don’t suppose that anyone my age will become fluent but there are always ways of making yourself understood – and I think Spanish people appreciate it.” Celia said her experiences in Murcia after her husband became ill were shaped practical things – such as finding information - she wanted to pass on to others. EMERGENCY She advised everyone to have ‘a rainy day fund’ and keep money available to hire an interpreter to translate, especially for medical emergencies. “In this region very few doctors and nurses speak English”. And she added: “It is not fair to the hospitals, doctors and nurses to expect them to understand you in English...and it can be dangerous.” Celia believes everyone should also take out a funeral plan – especially one that is valid both in Spain and the UK – and keep their wills up to date. She said everyone who has a driving licence – expats should change it to a Spanish one – should get out on the road and be used to driving. “Don’t let the first time you drive be in an emergency; this particularly applies to women.” Celia said it was also important to know what to do in an emergency and the documents needed when ringing 112 “and the fact you cannot go in an ambulance so you have to follow – and know which hospital they are going to.” “An emergency is not something you want to happen, but, unfortunately, it does happen; you just don’t know when. I think if you are prepared, it is easier to deal with,” she said. “But don’t look on the black side all the time – it is a wonderful country and e all have wonderful opportunities being here, but you have to be prepared for things that might go wrong.” Celia is pictured with British Ambassador Simon Manley at the official launch of the OLA ‘experiment’ in Alicante.

SPAIN WILL work hard to maintain its close relationship with the UK and the expats who have made their home in the sun, the British Consul predicted this week. “And I think they will also want to sort something out for people still coming here to live. Brits started to settle in Spain before Spain joined the EU.” As well as being the Consul for Alicante, Mrs Morris also has a role in Madrid engaging with central government and organisations based in the capital. Since the historic vote, she said consular staff had been gauging people´s reaction to and worries over the result. “It allows us to give feedback to the ambassador, to the big boss in London, and it finds its way back to the Prime Minister.” Mrs Morris believes there will be a form of “acquired rights” agreed between the two governments that was “mutually beneficial” to UK citizens in Europe and EU citizens in Britain. RESIDENT But she advised everyone to make sure they were correctly registered as a resident, including registration on the town hall list, the ‘Padron’. “If you are in No Man’s Land, it does not help the people in London or here in Spain.” Turning to health, she said at the moment Spain had a contribution system, while the NHS in the UK was residency based – to qualify meant paying into the system, being a dependent of someone who contributed, being on benefits - or as a UK pensioner, having the government pay an agreed per capita fee. “It works well.” Mrs Morris added: “A few days after the referendum, the regional President for Valencia wanted to see me; he was very insistent nothing would change.” And she said given the importance of the “footprint” of the British community in Spain, especially in areas like Alicante and Malaga, the Spanish were still very friendly and welcoming to the British. “The footprint of the British in Spain, both residents and visitors, is so large and so strong; the relationship is so positive – it has breathed new life into villages along the coast that didn´t have any life,” said the Consul. “Hand on heart, both pre and post-referendum, I haven´t seen any difference. My job is to feed things back, so we can come up with something that makes your lives, your day to day lives, as unchanged as possible.” The meeting was told one of the consequences of the EU policy of ‘free movement’ for European citizens was it was difficult to know just how many British people lived in Spain or divided their time between the UK as so-called swallows. Mrs Morris said there were reports that the British population in Spain dropped by 100,000, according to the Padron figures, following the need to declare overseas assets. “But I don´t think 100,000 removal vans suddenly came over here.” She added: “My advice is to get yourself above board and work out where you are; as we move forward we will want to work out what the numbers are. “And we would like to think as information comes through in terms of negotiations, that we will be informed.”

Shocking cruelty HARDENED STAFF at a Costa Blanca animal shelter were reduced to tears to find a petrified dog – believed to have suffered “years of cruelty” – abandoned at the gate. by Jack Troughton The little poodle-type female, now renamed Missy, was covered in grime, her fur was matted and her eyes so covered in grime she could not see. Missy is now recovering in a caring foster home and being treated by vets after being left at the entrance of animal charity APASA’s sanctuary in Javea. And APASA President Mandy Conway told RTN: “I was away on holiday and nearly vomited when I saw the pictures. It was really, really shocking. All our staff and volunteers have never seen such neglect and wanton cruelty. “The girls were just crying when they sent me the photographs. They said they had never seen anything so bad.” Mandy said Missy was now “doing OK”, she is being treated “bit by bit” and her fur is being cut. “She cannot see or hear apparently because she is so scared.” The charity wanted to make an official complaint to Seprona - the animal and environmental protection wing of the Guardia Civil – but have no idea who is responsible for the animal’s condition. Mandy added: “She must have undergone years of cruelty and misery. She cannot bear to be touched at the moment; God knows what she has been through.” And she said Missy was left overnight outside the shelter without food or water – and because she could not see could easily have been run over.

Javea says ‘thanks’ HUNDREDS ENJOYED ‘The Big Heart of Javea’ party on Sunday afternoon to thank – and to raise funds for – the town’s voluntary emergency services for their heroism and dedication during last month’s fires. by Jack Troughton Mayor Jose Chulvi visited stands of the ISVH Bomberos de Balcon del Mar, Civil Protection and Red Cross to meet team members. The party started with a roar as some 180 powerful Harley Davidson motorbikes paraded down the seafront, through Javea Port and on to Avenida Augusta where the celebration was soon in full swing. Crowds were able to get a close up view of an exhibition of classic cars, organised by the Marina Alta Classic Car Club, and the gleaming Harleys lined up on the road – the ‘ride out’ organised by local owners group Free Spirits. Food and drink flowed as people basked in the sunshine and partied to the music of a series of live bands – and dug deep to support the three worthy causes making donations and buying a special 2017 calendar. Pictured is biker Lisa Fox of Free Spirits with some of the volunteer firemen of the Bomberos.

Captura’s instant success HOURS AFTER the launch of the latest Operation Captura appeal to hunt down Britain’s ‘most wanted’ criminals believed to be hiding in Spain police made the first arrest. by Caroline Tyszka Matthew Sammon – a suspected paedophile – was arrested in his camper van in the Costa del Sol resort of Fuengirola last Thursday night after a member of the public recognised his photograph and called Crimestoppers. And Mohammed Alam, identified in the 2015 list of wanted fugitives, was arrested in Tenerife. The 33-year-old rapist fled the UK six years ago before he was convicted in March 2010 and sentenced to 14 years jail in his absence for an attack on a woman in Cheltenham. Operation Captura is a joint initiative between the independent UK charity Crimestoppers and the National Crime Agency (NGA), working with the Spanish law enforcement agencies. And in its 10th anniversary year, the public has helped the successive appeals net 78 from 96 criminals on the run and evading justice. Sammon, originally from Croydon, London, is wanted by the Metropolitan Police on suspicion of making and possessing indecent photographs of children. The 45-year-old was arrested in April 2014, interviewed and bailed. However, he failed to report back to the police and fled. He is believed to have been hiding in Spain for almost two years. A ferry ticket from Cork in Ireland to the port of Roscoff in northern France was found in his mobile home. RECOGNISED Police pounced as Sammon returned from walking his dog – former boss Daniel Reid, a plasterer from Blackpool, employed the alleged paedophile for six months and recognised the fugitive’s photograph. “As soon as I saw his face among the most wanted, I felt sick. I let him hang around with my children, we took him in with open arms and at first were none the wiser,” said Mr Reid. “We always though he was a bit weird; he’s a real loner and never talks about his family. He creeped me and my family out so much that I fired him.” Bangladeshi national Alam was arrested by officers of the Spanish National Police at a restaurant in Playa de las Americas in Tenerife where he was working. Lord Ashcroft KCMG, the founder and Chairman of Crimestoppers, said: “To have secured a second arrest in the space of a few days, following last week’s appeal and the arrest of Matthew Sammon is a tremendous result. “I thank our partners, the NCA and Spanish Police, for their efforts and would remind anyone who has information on the remaining 18 wanted individuals that Crimestoppers is an anonymous service for you to tell us where they are. So do the right thing and let’s insure we achieve more positive results.” People can pass on information by calling the dedicated Spanish number 900 555 111, which is answered by Crimestoppers in the UK. People in the UK can call 0800 555 111 – and a report can be made online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.

Disappearing parking spaces PARKING PROBLEMS in one Costa Blanca town have been exasperating drivers - as spaces continue to disappear. New bins, wider footpaths and increased motorcycle parking zones has meant Benidorm lost 200 blue zone spaces in the past year. A town hall document has highlighted the problems and a study to find solutions is underway; although the council has rejected proposals to have spaces specifically for residents. The study will also investigate if the blue zone – paying parking - should be extended.

The cruel sea

EXPERTS FEAR 2016 will be “the deadliest year ever” for migrants and refugees attempting to cross the Mediterranean to Europe. Some 3,740 people died up to 23rd October – a number set to rise as the worst two months at sea are still to come. Last year’s toll was 3,771. The UN’s refugee agency believes one in every 47 attempting the perilous voyage from Libya is dying; despite Europe’s navies attempting to intercept vessels, a threefold increase. And the UN says smugglers are now organising more crossings under the cover of bad weather and staging mass evacuations; cramming thousands of people into flimsy boats, all setting at the same time – so if they run into trouble rescue services cannot cope.

UN confuses fact and fiction

COMIC BOOK character Wonder Woman will need all her superpowers to fight off enemies after controversially being named as the United Nations’ new Honorary Ambassador for the Empowerment of Women and Girls. by Jack Troughton The title bestowed on the fictional heroine – sometimes known as the now 75-year-old Princess Diana of Thermyscira – will be part of a 12 month campaign promoting gender equality around the globe. However, the appointment sparked outrage amongst UN staff who immediately launched an online petition arguing Wonder Woman was not an appropriate choice and it was “disappointing” the UN could not find a suitable ‘real life’ champion. They said the superhero was: “A large breasted white woman of impossible proportions, scantily clad in a shimmery, thigh-bearing body suit with an American flag motif and knee-high boots – the epitome of a ‘pin-up’ girl.” Coincidently, there is a new Wonder Women movie about to be released starring Gal Gadot – the Israeli actress joined Lynda Carter, the actress who starred as the superhero in the 1970’s television series at a ceremony to mark the appointment. The UN has defended its unusual choice. Wonder Woman was created in 1941 by a top psychologist as a female icon inspired by the suffragist movement. And a spokesman said: “The focus was on her feminist background, being the first female superhero in a world of male superheroes and, basically, she has always fought for fairness, justice and peace.” Critics said it was “alarming” the UN chose a character with an “overtly sexualised image”...a New York professor, formerly a UN advisor on peace and security issues for women, was blunt. She said the appointment was “disgusting”.

A Community Comes Together by

Jennifer Cunningham

I, along with many others, keep watching the Pound go into free-fall with a certain amount of anxiety. I am trying to sell a small apartment in Los Alcazares and, unfortunately, the low level of the Pound against the Euro is slowing down house purchasing once more, which is tragic as Spain was just starting to recover nicely and the housing market reflected this. Of course, this will have a knock on affect to the Spanish economy and other services, including holidays and tourism. For pensioners living in Spain, it must be a nightmare with the amount of money to spend on the decline. Those who voted for Brexit, whilst living in Spain, must start to wonder if it was the right decision. As I am sure many others in the UK are beginning to think the same. I just think that it is going to be a long time, and believe that things will get worse before they get better. The uncertainty regarding the manufacturers is beginning to take place whilst prices of energy and food will, I am sure, be at a higher level soon. Yes, I understand that in a number of years Britain may be a successful, independent country again. But how much damage is going to be done to the economy

before that magical day appears? The talk of hard Brexit is worrying the City, banks and investors. I can understand these concerns as the amount of tax revenue from the City is vast and the thought of losing the UK’s centre of finance, which is very successful, to another country would create a nightmare for the UK. Where they find good negotiators in the UK is anybody’s guess. Once a team has been selected, over they go to Europe and start negotiating individually with 27 countries, all with their own agenda and different cultures. That is going to make for a very interesting time and will be far from easy. When discussing a hard Brexit, I always thought there were only two alternatives, the Norwegian way, which includes immigration but free trade, and the other with no immigration but tariffs. That way, of course, would be a disaster for the country as those companies that are manufacturing in the UK would lose their edge on prices plus, of course, there are companies who would lose the free passporting into Europe. I am, however, very confident that both Spain and the UK will sort something out (despite Gibraltar) between our two countries that will be

satisfactory and secure the Ex Pats future. There is no way Spain can afford to lose us – we create too much wealth and employment for them. Until then, we have to live with the uncertainty, most of it generated by the press, try to stay positive and do not make panicked decisions, especially as it will take at least two years to finalise the agreements. In the meantime the British press, as normal, will have a field day. I was delighted to be asked to join the sponsors for the Javea Charity Day to raise funds for the local services who all fought so hard to protect the Javea area during the days of the dreadful fires. What a wonderful day it turned out to be. John Le Sueur and his merry team performed a magnificent feat in six weeks organising the event. I understand that the Ayuntamiento of Javea were so impressed that the mayor has asked John to organise another event next year. The day started with the sun shining and 184 Harley Davidsons arriving with all their flags flying. This was a wonderful sight, very impressive and extremely noisy. They were followed closely by some magnificent classic cars. What a wonderful street party it turned out to be with all nationalities having a great time. Food and drink went down very well, and everyone

was entertained all day long by some wonderful music. What a tribute to the Bomberos, the Red Cross and Civil Protection. Thank you to you all for your support and donations. Jennifer Cunningham Consultants sl, Liberty Seguros and ASSSA were all delighted to be able to participate in the event. Of course, there is always a price to pay when fire consumes an area. Losing a house, garden or any property and being evacuated is very shocking and traumatic, and can be more so when you discover that you were not covered by your insurance adequately. I am repeatedly advising everyone about taking the cheapest option and thinking you will get the same cover as the best – of course this is never the case. Liberty Seguros has three levels of cover, but they are very reluctant to sell the lower policy. However, as I pointed out to them, this policy is in line with most other company’s standard policy. That should make you think. Your biggest asset deserves to have the best insurance policy there is and I can assure you that Liberty Seguros is the best. Please remember that Liberty is a worldwide insurance company and not a bank. Please contact one of my offices for any insurance needs or visit my website www.jennifercunningham.net.

Long distance learning becomes a reality with TeamViewer FOR MANY years, friends and acquaintances from different parts of the World have asked me if I could teach them how to build their own website, or make their own graphic, or videos, and other software applications over the Internet. Of course, I had to decline as there wasn’t any way to enable this kind of long distance learning because the software programmes needed to be seen to be understood. Just describing what to do and how to do it – over the phone – was not a viable reality for beginners or anyone who needed to be ‘shown’ what to do because that is how they processed their learning. Well – that changed recently thanks to a new bit of software that is free and easy to install called TeamViewer. Now, if a client in Canada, USA, England or just down the road wants to learn website design and development with a software programme such as FrontPage or Expressions Web, then I can help them with the aid of TeamViewer. TeamViewer lets me open a connection to my students’ computer – and together the two of us can role play the step by step methodology of the website design software. Or we can go through the steps of editing a video on Movie Maker and then uploading it to YouTube – or edit photos in PhotoShop and then upload them to KodakGallery and sharing them with family and friends… you get the idea! These are just some examples, but it is unlimited in the revolutionary way I can help people to help themselves on their PC’s.

TeamViewer connects two computers over a server

TeamViewer has another mode that can also aid me with helping my students move very large files that would bog down or bounce from an email service. For example, if a student has designed a flyer and the graphics are very large because it has to go to the printers, they can let me know where it is on their hard drive, and I can transfer it over to my hard drive and look at it – make corrections and then slide it back over to their computer again! Basically, TeamViewer is a remote desktop tool that is easy to use by connecting two computers over a server. All a user has to do is open the TeamViewer programme and it opens a gateway or “session”. That

Karla Darocas * Business Communications Software Training & Computer Repairs *Helping You to Help Yourself 965 973 234

session displays a session ID and session password. Once that is established, the user (who in this case is my student) emails me those details. I open my TeamViewer programme and enter the session ID and password and choose between – viewing the desktop of the student in order to teach the software application – or choose the file transfer mode. And that is it – we are working together without leaving the office or cosy home! Contact me if you would like to learn more about long distance e-learning and how TeamViewer could help you! Income tax for non-residents SOLICITORS WHITE & Baos wishes to remind RTN readers who are non-tax residents in Spain that they are still obliged to pay income taxes in Spain - even if they do not have any income - just by owning a property here. If you live in Spain and but are not registered with the taxman as a tax resident, or you do not submit taxes as tax residents, you could be legally considered as non-tax resident, as no notice has been given to the tax authority. Non-tax residents could also be liable to pay wealth tax, but only if the value of their assets in Spain (after deducting debts, such as pending capital of the mortgage) is above 600.000â‚Ź. If you are non-tax resident, or you are not legally tax resident in Spain, you will need to pay tax for income in Spain (Income Tax for Non Residents, IRNR): this is, for example, rents from a letting or interest on bank accounts. If you do not have any income but you own a property or a share on a property, your tax bill will be based on a calculation as per the Cadastral Value; the value that appears on your Spanish local rates receipt from the Town Hall, the SUMA office or the equivalent. Even now it is quite common for people who are non-fiscal residents, or not legally tax resident in Spain, to simply not pay this tax; usually due to ignorance or neglect and especially when they have no income in Spain and only own a house. And, please notice, that if you let your property in Spain, you have obligation to submit the taxes every 3 months and not only once a year. If you are not sure if you are legally or officially tax resident or non-tax resident, or if you want to know what is the most convenient for you, we can assist you by studying your personal situation. If you are non-tax resident, do not forget to meet your tax obligation if you want to avoid a possible fiscal inspection and possible penalties. Contact us and we will help you.

John Porter International Financial Adviser

The importance of diversification With current political and economic conditions Investors and Savers face increasingly difficult choices whether looking for Capital Growth or Income. There are several concerns that we all need to consider when managing our finances. Not least the consequences of Brexit from both the UK and European perspectives. Politically. The triggering of Article 50 is merely the start of a long negotiating process lasting until at least 2019 with the many twists and turns in what will undoubtedly be a very bumpy road. With a “hard exit”, which, as Theresa May states, the UK electorate have voted for, we can expect potentially debilitating trade barriers being erected across Europe, the EU, realistically, cannot give the UK an easy ride simply because other member states will want out as well ! In essence both parties need each other but working out how to arrive at a satisfactory conclusion whereby both sides can claim victory is, quite simply, beyond me. Economically. With the ECB continuing unabated with its Quantitative Easing programme and a potential economic slowdown in the UK as a result of Brexit it is difficult to see any rise in interest rates on either side of the English Channel for some time (unless inflation becomes an issue due to Sterling weakness in the UK) so no reprieve for cash savers yet I’m afraid. What to do? Fortunately, we live in an age of the “Global Economy” and as such we are able to diversify our portfolios to a wider range of products throughout the World either geographically or by asset class, thereby mitigating the prospect of a “Black Swan” pan European event and seeking better returns on our Investments whilst continuing to bear in mind one’s aspirations and attitude to risk. From an Investment and Savings perspective there is almost invariably a solution no matter how hard the problem may seem. If you would like advice on what’s on offer I am here to help you. To arrange an independent, professional and impartial consultation or review of your current banking / investment portfolio, please contact me by email john.porter@blacktowerfm.com or call me on 634 342 270.

Heavy metal

by Jack Troughton

CARELINE THEATRE dared to bare with ‘The Full Monty’ and with its Alcalali Theatre packed to the rafters, produced some smeltingly hot entertainment. The play is a stripped down version of the film – now a modern British classic – but retains the gloriously funny key scenes, wicked black humour, and the wonderful soundtrack. Hats off to Careline for bringing this gritty story to the Costa Blanca; set at the height of Thatcherism, Sheffield has lost its traditional ‘jobs for life’ steel industry - no wonder the characters refer to the ‘Con Club’ when referring to the ‘refined’ Tory meeting place, rather than their more familiar pint and a pie working man’s club. And the play deals with unemployment, homosexuality, divorce, maintenance payments and child custody. This heavy mix would be indigestible except for a terrific script and the ever-present comedy.

Desperate ‘ideas man’ Gaz decides to form male strip act ‘Bums of Steel’ after seeing the success of The Chippendales drive the local female population to hysterics. With best mate Dave they audition for a troupe of adult dancers; rejecting a woman stripper because “it’s about knobs not knockers”, and hoping for a one-off money-spinning performance. BOUNTY The audience is treated to Gerald, the former gnome-loving foreman who has yet to tell his wife he has lost his job and the troupe’s choreographer; Guy, who cannot dance but packs a large lunchbox; Horse, who can move but is without nature’s bounty in the trouser department; and security guard Lomper who is talked out of a suicide and supplies the key records to move to. The story is about restoring confidence and self esteem - and against all the odds strutting their stuff on stage – all lead-

ing to the grand finale...will they go starkers and do The Full Monty? Congratulations to Paul Young as Gaz, Robin Baxter as Dave, Alan Gill playing Gerald, Ian Bennett as Guy, Andy Crabb as Horse, and Michael Nicholls as Lomper, together the ‘Bums of Steel’, and the supporting cast, all drilled by Director Candy Wright. Special mention for Joseph Cronk as Gaz’s son Nathan – the troupe’s manager, financier, and despite his youth, the sensible one! Joseph is a talented member of Careline Kids and a veteran of last year’s ‘Bugsy Malone’ and Careline panto and reviews. It was all great fun and the dancing in the dole queue scene – much imitated since the success of the film – remains a favourite moment. Thanks to Benny Davis for the picture of the final ‘strip’; (from left) Lomper, Guy, Gaz, Dave, Horse, and Gerald.

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// You are certainly showing your stubborn side right now, and though it is for good reason, some leeway needs to be allowed for, to enable the process of peace to start. It is a fiery Mars that squares up to Uranus this week and this means that when all is said and done, progress and innovation may be allowed to sweep the board and solution. Saturn has a strong influence over Venus as they conjunct at the start of the week. This brings mixed blessings, but it is a final chance to check out a proposed move. You may have done your homework, but there are aspects developing that would seem to be out of your conscious control so weigh up fully the pros and the cons! The sextile with Pluto sees Mercury having to stall for time and use subtle tactics of delay to keep your head above water. Having abolished all connections with the tried and tested it is only right that you have your say and do things your way. You are breaking away from past actions but you haven’t yet thought of all the implications either. Understandably you have been let down after giving tireless support to somebody who needed your tender love and care. You have no time whatsoever for those people who cannot see the true error of their ways and who, subsequently cannot learn from this as a process. Time to take some well earned rest and relaxation to chill yourself back to being you. Opposing energies attract and are attractive this week as the Sun trines Neptune. There may very well be more that one way to skin a rabbit, but in the current scheme of things you are right to stand your ground and stick to your guns. Blessed with much ability to see further ahead you can see the road ahead is paved with problems not of your making. Mercury trines Neptune and clears the way for some domestic project that you have waited sometime to be able to focus on. Now that pressures have been removed you do need something to get your teeth into; and the help that you need is at your elbow right now. Make hay while the sun shines as the Sun crosses into Neptune midweek too!

Time for you to get out of the rut you are currently in and made things happen. The endearing energy of Mars is made more positive by a square with dwarf planet Kora, midweek. Instead of feeling sorry for yourself and licking your wounds, go, do whatever it takes to allow you to see some new horizon and know that you can be a part of it.

Mars takes a a square on Ceres and it is all about good timing this week! It is going to herald a busier time for you and may just serve to get you out of your shell and out doing what you really love to do. When you know that your talents are needed and you are appreciated it will inspire you take on more and finally see things in a very different light

Someone who has been economical with the truth is continuing to lie to you, and you have to get to the bottom of this; though you may never know why! Blessed with a truly psychic ability you are right to await what comes next, and then you have the absolute right to walk away with your head held high if that is what feels the right thing to do. Saturn is conjuncted fairly and squarely by Venus this week, bringing a lot of love light and illumination into your very soul. Kind actions have led to you meeting your match at last. Take time to examine your priorities and what all this can mean; and then take the bull by the horns and go for what makes you feel so very happy, there in your heart! Mars squares on Ceres and then turns around to square up to your trusty planetary leader, Uranus. You will feel the shift this week as you finally realise that the struggles of the past are really over and that you can be whole again. Since you give such a loving and positive energy out finally accept the gift of love, as it is now staring you in the face. Neptune is blessed by both the positive energies of the Sun and the communicational skills of wily Mercury. Faced with aspects of a double whammy, yes you can have it all this week; but you have to believe in the magic you can create, instead of having to be grateful for small mercies. Come what may the North wind blows you gently onwards.

Kenny whenever anybody mentions accessing the Spirit World I am so nervous that my ex husband will be there to harm me, just as he did throughout our life together. When I pass over will he be there? Myrta V. Myrta if your ex husband hasn’t changed his ways then we can safely say that he was never admitted into the Spirit World. The entry requirement is that you know the error of your ways and agree to do something about it. If your ex husband is indeed there then he will now know what he did was wrong and his pardon would be his right to reside on the Other Side. However, you have absolutely the right not to make any contact with him whatsoever...and he can’t harm you any more. Worry not!

If It’s Your Birthday This Week Have everything clear in your mind and once you ensure all that unfinished business is finally dealt with; you will be free to embrace the astrological year ahead and tie up any loose ends. Be determined and ruthless as this will speed things up considerably!

Kindle downloads GREETINGS TO you and the team Aunty: Please help if possible: I bought a new Kindle e-reader, managed to connect to WiFi and register the beast, but if I try to purchase or download books they come up in Spanish. What can I do? I have a laptop with Windows 7. Many thanks: Mary. Aunty says: If you connect to the internet in Spain, most devices can see this so will offer content for that country. Usually where you download your Kindle books from is determined by the country that your Amazon account is registered in. So if you have an Amazon account registered using a Spanish address, your Kindle will be directed to the Spanish Amazon Store. If you have an Amazon account registered using a UK address with a UK credit card, your Kindle will be directed to the UK Amazon Store. However, there is a function under ‘manage my kindle’ to change the Amazon site to and from ‘.com’ to ‘.co.uk’, so you can buy from your UK Amazon Store account using a Kindle bought via ‘.com’. There will be differences in downloadable content between the two countries Amazon accounts, as not all books publishes in the UK will be licensed to be sold in Spain. And obviously the amount of English print books available on Spanish Amazon Store will be fewer than on UK Amazon Store. So you may want to play it safe and use a UK Amazon account, with a UK address and UK credit card, to buy a Kindle from the UK, and then you will have no problems, even in Spain, downloading books from the UK Amazon Store. Response: Hi - thanks for your reply. I understand what you are saying, and had some success buying books on the Kindle itself (WiFi connection). I am always grateful for your support, so thanks again.

Yes … Shia and Mia definitely has a ring to it! Shia LaBeouf, 30, was born in Los Angeles, California, has a mother who´s a dancer and ballerina turned jewellery designer, and a father who is a Vietnam War veteran. Shia has got himself into some serious Shia-it over recent years, and has unfortunately come out a bit on the nuttie side, and what he got up to in Las Vegas a couple of weeks ago might well fuel that fire. Shia met actress Mia Goth on the set of ´Nymphomaniac: Volume II´ in 2012, and they clearly hit it off as they´ve only been to Las Vegas and got married, and the ceremony was conducted by an Elvis Impersonator who started the ceremony by singing Ray Charles song ´What I Say.´ That done ´Elvis´ then said “Do you both agree to adopt each other’s hound dogs? … to not wear your blue suede shoes in the rain? … and to always be each other’s teddy bear and give each other a hunk-a hunk-a burning love?” … ´Elvis´ then pronounced them man and wife. Act Three: Elvis tells the groom to kiss the bride. If that ain´t love … then what is!

It might well be old news that Bob Dylan has been awarded the Nobel Prize for literature, but I didn´t want it to go unnoticed on this page. The actual wording about his award read … ‘Having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition’ … right on brudder! He popped up in the 60´s with songs that covered the social unrest at the time, and has had an ongoing career, both on the road and in the studio that’s produced a dozen Grammy awards. Many of his songs, like ´The Times They are A-Changin’ were considered to be based on the growing civil rights movements and the anti-war protests, although the quiet retiring Dylan often refused to adopt the ´voice of his generation´ tag. Bob released his 37th studio album ´Fallen Angels´ earlier this year, and at 75, for sure continues to be a man on a mission.

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// For any younger readers please indulge me for a mo whilst I resonate with the past about children’s books. I was reduced to this sorry state when I read that the most famous bear in literature Winnie the Pooh had turned 90. I say about younger readers, but the chances are you´re aware of AA Milne’s work, first published in 1926, work that was an immediate success, selling 35,000 copies in Britain and 150,000 in the US. To mark the 90th anniversary of this debut Winnie-the-Pooh book, four new adventures have been published, and that’s not all … Pooh has a new pal! New character Penguin will be introduced in ´Winter: In which Penguin arrives in the Forest.´ The new book is written by Brian Sibley, and was inspired by a photograph of AA Milne and his son Christopher playing with a penguin stuffed toy. Aw … Double Blessss

After last year’s spectacular success, the lovely Kylie Minogue will be returning to the Royal Albert Hall on 9 – 10th December to perform her ´A Kylie Christmas´ shows. She talked of there being even more surprises in store this year and adding “I can’t wait to return to the Royal Albert Hall to share a night of joy and celebration with everyone … expect Christmas classics, plenty of sparkle and some very special surprises,” sounds marvy. Kylie is now 48 years old and must have surely found some inner piece as it shines through so brightly, and I fancy everybody loves her for that reason. Sadly all seats were taken in minutes, but we´ll get to see it when it comes on the telly.

I remember not initially being a fan of Depeche Mode, mostly because of the ´distant´ image they put out, shallow perhaps, but I wanted to like the bands I liked. That useless information apart, once I found my way to their music I tracked back and am a huge fan. Last week the three Basildon boys, all original members from the late 70´s, announced their fourteenth studio album´ Spirit´ will be available in music stores and to download early next year. The group also announced they will take on a giant stadium tour with guitarist Martin Gore saying “We’re exceptionally proud of Spirit’s sound and energy, and we’re excited to get back on tour to share it with our fans around the world.” UK date: London Stadium (formerly the Olympic Stadium) June 3 ... Bilbao, Spain July 6.

Thanking blaze heroes by Jack Troughton JAVEA SCHOOL of Bridge and Social Club raised 1,650€ in donations to thank the heroes who courageously battled against the “horrendous” fires last month. Sandra Benson suggested supporting the volunteer firefighters of ISVH Bomberos de Balcon del Mar and Richard Murgatroyd – evacuated during the emergency – suggested including Javea Cruz Roja. The generosity of members allowed club President Royston Bond to present a cheque for 1,100€ to the firemen (pictured) and 550€ to the Red Cross. Five club members lost their gardens to the flames that swept across Javea and Benitachell, a number were evacuated as a precaution.

We prefer to adopt a child We want to adopt an older child, rather than have our own children, but my parents have said they don’t think it is a good idea. All they have done since they found out our plans is point out the pitfalls and negative side of adopting. Also, my mother had the nerve to say that she thought an adopted child would not be loved like the other grandchildren. I found this very threatening. It must be very disappointing for you. However, this is your life and your decision, and I would ignore other peoples feelings. You are doing a lovely, charitable thing here, and there are plenty of older children who have been overlooked for adoption, and are in desperate need of a loving home. If your family has a problem with that, then that is their problem. The attitude is perhaps a little selfish if they can only think of themselves in this situation. Getting married and having children is not the ‘be all and end all’ of a relationship. These days not everyone decides to get married, or indeed have children, but you’ll need to broach the subject with your families so that they can get used how things are going to be. Be honest and direct, and tell them you don’t want marriage and children, but are focusing on your careers and each other. Then ask them to please stop dropping the hints, because it is upsetting you both. It’s your life and no one else’s.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Local Accents I thought it would be quite interesting to have a little break from grammar and talk about accents. People often ask me whether the Spanish language has different accents like English, and the answer is yes they do. There are broad similarities between the accents of various parts of the country – for example the north and the south, and also there are many small differences of accent and vocabulary even from one town or village to another. In other words, I think Spanish accents are at least as varied as English ones.

I am not a great expert on the subject but I am aware of some of the basic differences, and over the years have developed a bit of an ear for accents, although I think this is very difficult for us foreigners. Sometimes I can hear a difference which I can’t quite put my finger on it, which is something that also happens when the Spanish hear our different accents. So, starting from the “top left”, Galicia, and also Asturias, have a characteristically “sing-song” way of speaking. In many parts of Asturias they also change the “o” vowel for a “u” vowel. The capital city Oviedo is “Uvieu” in the local dialect called “bable” or “asturianu”. Words ending in “ado” are often pronounced “au” (as in helado – helau). It’s tempting to go into more detail but I must move on! Further east in Cantabria there is much purer Castilian accent, at least in the capital of Santander, as this area has always had strong historical links with inland Castilla. The area of old Castilla (north west of Madrid) is where the purest Castilian accent is found. If you have ever met anyone from Salamanca, Valladolid or Segovia, they are likely to have informed you that their accent is the purest and the best one to imitate. Madrid people tend to speak a very rapid form of Castilian Spanish which takes some getting used to. Over to the east in Cataluña there is a throaty quality to the language, influenced by French and by their own Catalan language. Further south in the region of Murcia the language is rather nasal and also notable for the absence of the letter “s” at the ends of words. Many people think the Murcian accent sounds rather sloppy. Andalucía is a huge area with all sorts of variations, but as a generalization they usually pronounce the characteristic Spanish “th” sound as an “s”, so that “gracias” sounds like “grasias” for example. The hardest accent to understand is from Cadiz which is incredibly rapid and full of “sh” and “ch” sounds. As well as this, the people from Cadiz are famous for being very quick-witted, which means you’re lucky to understand a single word! I’ve missed out quite a lot of regions, not to mention the islands and all of South and central America! One last comment which I think is of great interest is that the Spanish do not have “class” accents. Obviously there are more or less educated people speaking better or worse Spanish, but there is no concept of “posh” or “working class” accents which so label us Brits as soon as we open our mouths!

Radio Ga Ga ‘a’ Go Go I WAS once asked if I knew Guglielmo Marconi personally? God’s Boots I’m not that old.

by

Chris Ashley

Writer & Broadcaster

Alright I grant you the Ashley radio ramble started it’s weary way nearly half a century ago at BBC Radio Brighton. One of my first tasks was to drive a news hound in the radio car to various venues to cover breaking stories. This sounds more exciting than it actually was – not exactly ‘All The Presidents Men’ territory. However in Woebegone Worthing, when we were reporting on a bowls match (Woodward & Bernstein – pah!) close to the beach, we heard that trouble was brewing. Baring in mind this was the era of Mods & Rockers rampaging along various sea fronts we thought this could be our BBC award winning moment – or at least a Jim’ll Fix It badge (on second thoughts.....). Alas this was not a Denim v Parka punch up – it was a BriNylon v Corduroy clash. I kid thee not – there were half a dozen octogenarian bowlers knocking 7 shades of Sanatogen out of each other, possibly over the last Werther’s Original. The combined years of the ‘Phyllosan Gang’ was twice that of Independent America. Truly the early ‘70’s were wonderful times for this impressionable hayseed – rubbing shoulders with budding broadcasting legends like Kate Adie (haughty), Des Lynam (friendly), Annie Nightingale (jaunty), and for a short time Jeremy Paxman (surly, born & bred, it didn’t come later in life). With due respects to them my airwaves idol was Kenny Everett. The BBC Head of Blame, surprisingly, let me make a programme about the demise of The Beatles (he probably thought it was a nature documentary). At that time Kenny was living in the sticks of Sussex & with very little optimism I contacted him to ask if he’d contribute a couple of quotes. “Of course I will my little radio muffin.” he gushed à la Marcel Wave. At best I thought I’d get an hour with him – not a bit of it – all day in his studio. Kenny had tapes from the 1950’s (Quarrymen / Johnny & The Moondogs / Silver Beetles) through to the recording that Lennon described as -“Hell-the most miserable on earth.” - the making of the ‘Let It Be.’ album. Miserable days for The Beatles in their studio – a magic day for me in Kenny’s. Your input always welcome; ashleybobble@hotmail.com

Duck Ham If you want to try curing your own meat, this salted duck breast is easy, flavourful and will make you feel like a true kitchen pro Ingredients small handful fresh thyme 1 tsp black peppercorns 2 cloves 1 garlic clove 1 dried bay leaf, roughly crushed 200g flaky sea salt 200g golden caster sugar 1 large meaty duck breast (about 250g)

Method Using a pestle and mortar, roughly crush the thyme, peppercorns, cloves, garlic and bay. Tip into a bowl with the salt and sugar, and mix everything together thoroughly. Lightly score the skin on the breast in a criss-cross pattern. Scatter about a third of the salt mixture into a container that will hold the duck breast snugly. Lay the duck, flesh-

side down, on the salt and cover with the remaining mixture. Cover tightly with cling film or a lid and leave in the fridge for 3 days. Remove the duck from the mixture, rinse under cold water, then dry well with kitchen paper. The ham is now ready to thinly slice and serve on its own or in a salad. Wrapped in cling film, it will keep in the fridge for up to 1 month.

How hearing aids work HEARING AIDS enhance your ability to hear sounds. They can only assist/make better what is still there. If your hearing has gone completely, aids are not for you. Aids help but do not create or replace, and even with the best hearing aid in the world you are not going to get the hearing of a 16year-old. All hearing aids have the same four basic parts: A MICROPHONE TO PICK UP SOUND FROM THE OUTSIDE WORLD Aids can have one or two microphones. Those with two microphones are called directional hearing aids and can recognise better where sound is coming from; they can be set to decrease unwanted noise from behind you and concentrate on sounds in front of you. AN AMPLIFIER/PROCESSOR/MICROCHIP, WHICH MAKES THE SOUNDS LOUDER

In a digital hearing aid this selects frequencies at which you have a loss and matches the level of amplification for each frequency to the degree of loss. A LOUDSPEAKER (RECEIVER) WHICH BROADCASTS THE AMPLIFIED SOUND INTO THE EAR CANAL This can be housed either inside the hearing aid or, in the case of receiver in the canal (RIC) hearing aids, inside the ear close to the eardrum. The size and power of this receiver dictates the level of amplification that the aid is capable of providing. A POWER SOURCE Most hearing aids are powered by small specialist batteries. These can last anything

from three to thirty days according to the size of the battery and the degree of amplification required. There are rechargeable batteries (special batteries and recharger required) and even rechargeable aids where no batteries are used (designed for the visually impaired). Rechargeable batteries are generally chosen by people with vision or dexterity problems; they are not chosen for economic reasons: the cost of the charger and the rechargeable batteries generally exceeds the cost of normal batteries.

Other technologies in various models of hearing aids include telecoils, which can link the hearing aid to loop systems in certain public buildings, and Bluetooth, which allows the hearing aid to communicate wirelessly with other Bluetooth-enabled technology such as mobile phones, MP3 players, televisions and computers. The basic design of microphone, processor, loud speaker and power source is the same for all types of aid whether worn behind the ear, in the ear, large, or small.

Monte prepared to appeal by Andrew Atkinson CD Montesinos is prepared to appeal to the Madrid Football Association in the wake of the controversial points deduction for allegedly fielding a non-registered player. The club was left at the bottom of the table after losing points but insists the player, Fernando, was legally on the field. A club spokesman said: “We feel very strongly about this issue - and should the decision remain upon our appeal to the Valencia FA - the club will appeal to the Madrid FA. We will take whatever action is needed.” And on the back of CD Montesinos’ three points deduction, the Vega Baja-based outfit are also to act against FB Redovan - who made five substitutions - in last weekend’s controversial 2-2 draw. “CD Montesinos has appealed for all three points from the fixture against FB Redovan. According to the referee’s report Redovan made five substitutions - only four are permitted,” added the spokesperson. New coach Carlos Perez, who replaced sacked Camacho just two games into the season, is set to sign a new defender who could make his debut against Orihuela on Sunday.

Pego Golf Society

What a miserable day for a game of golf.

From the time we woke up until the 9th hole, the rain continued to fall, making playing golf very difficult indeed. Wet clothes, wet feet, and wet gloves make for poor conditions to play golf. Today, we played a Combined Pairs Competition, which basically means that you take the Stableford points for each person in the team of two, add them together, and

hopefully win. We had 38 players and our guests who were :- Martin Livesey, Derek Lindley, Richard Morris, Neil Ewell, Georgie Turner, and Glen Morgan. They were welcomed by all our members. Winners 1st Place:- Brian Barden and Nigel Siddall with 66 Points

The “Balls in the Water” prize was won today with 99 balls, and that was won by Brian Barden who scooped last week’s pool and this week’s pool by guessing the correct number, which was 99 balls. This was exactly the same number, as it was three weeks ago Nearest the hole at Hole 5 with their second shot was Clive Wright with 2.99 meters, and at hole 16 the closest was Malcolm Wise with 2.17 meters. In the semi final of the Matchplay Plate, Mike Cuerden defeated Bill Pike at the 20th hole It was one of our Committee Members Birthday, and to celebrate, he offered a very nice bottle of Brandy to the winner of a card draw, and the lucky winner, was one of our guests, namely Georgie Turner, so well done Georgie. If any member or guest would like to play with the Pego Golf Society, and who wouldn’t, as we are playing the Blacktower Challenge trophy, which is the last major of the year and is a medal competition, so please contact our secretary and send an e-mail to Penny Barden at pegohandicapsec@gmail.com or enter through our website www.pegogolfsociety.com. A warm welcome awaits you

Check Your Lights As the days start to get shorter and the nights are getting longer, it´s time to check that all of the lights on our vehicles are fully working.

Until quite recently, all vehicles had to carry a spare set of bulbs, this is no longer the case. The Spanish government recognised that changing a bulb is no longer a simple task, and in many cases can only be done by qualified mechanics, and so carrying a spare set was pointless, if the ability to change the bulbs had been removed. However, it is still important to check all of the lights on a regular basis, even those not used too often, such as fog lights. It is better to have an assistant to help you do this so that one of you can be in the car operating the switches, the other on the outside monitoring the results. Remember, check every light, headlights (including full beam), indicators and hazard lights (front and back), rear lights and brake lights, reversing and fog lights, and the lights that illuminate the number plate at the rear. If your vehicle is a modern one you might also have Daytime Running Lights installed. Although these lights are often more reliable than traditional lights, on account of them being LED´s, they should also be checked on a regular basis. If you don´t have anybody to help you can still carry out the checks by using reflective surfaces such as shop windows or other parked vehicles. Make sure you do this in an isolated location though as you don´t want to confuse other motorists. If any of the lights have failed make sure you get them replaced immediately as it is an offence to drive with defective lights.

Birthdays and anniversaries by Jack Troughton THE TEULADA-BASED English Choir entertained a packed church and raised 1,300€ for charity on Friday with a varied and sometimes emotional evening of song. The choir appeared at the Ermita de San Josep in La Fustera to support the Church of England’s Costa Blanca Chaplaincy - as well as the Benissa food bank, run by Caritas. Songs from popular musicals were mixed with classical and pop numbers, showing the range and versatility of the talented group. And the evening paid tribute to birthdays and anniversaries. A particular poignant moment came as the choir dedicated ‘Ave Maria’ to the memory of those killed or affected by the disaster at Aberfan 50 years ago. On a lighter note both the audience and choir sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to the English Choir’s Frank Bentley who was celebrating his 80th birthday. The Costa Blanca Anglican Chaplaincy serves the community from Valencia to Alicante with services in eight different towns. For more information on the activities of the church, contact details and service times visit www.costablanca-anglicanchaplaincy.org. And the English Choir returns to the stage with ‘A Year in Song’ on Saturday 5th November at 7pm at the Salon d’Actos, next to the Town Hall in Teulada. It will perform selections from ‘The Sound of Music’, ‘Carousel’, and ‘Grease’, with a touch of Gilbert and Sullivan and a medley of Christmas music. Tickets are 10€ and are available by calling Janet Brown on 96 574 5091 or by email to janetbrowncraft@gmail.com. Proceeds go to the choir’s charity, the Alzheimer’s Day Centre in Teulada. For more information call Judith on 96 648 0195.

Macmillan party success BIG-HEARTED SUE and Pat Donovan threw open their home and garden in Moraira to raise more than 4,000€ for UK-based Macmillan Cancer Support. The two organisers were once again backed by local people who wanted to support the charity and its annual global appeal. An auction raised 1,515€ and auctioneer Lee, from the Druids Cave in Moraira, entertained everyone with his ready wit. His team mate Alan, the ‘Jag Man’, joined in the fun as he showed off the auction lots. And Muku, from the Kathmandu Restaurant in Moraira, donated 300€ following a dinner organised by Sue in aid of the charity, which was well attended and enjoyed by all. Guests at the event paid 10€ a head for ‘tapas and drinks’, the food provided by friends. Raffle prizes were kindly donated by local businesses, restaurants and friends. Everyone also enjoyed performances by musicians Dave Peachey, Graham Sherin and Mr Honkytonk.
