“Tin pot” state frustrates bank victims by Jack Troughton
One purrfectly contented pet
How much is that kitty in the window? By Jack Troughton BASKING IN the winter sunshine warming the window of a Javea shop, this was one purrfectly contented pet – and a cat definitely not for sale.
FRUSTRATED VICTIMS of a fraudulent equity release scheme sold by a now bankrupt Icelandic bank are angry at continually being denied justice in Luxembourg. Around 600 pensioners across Spain, France, Germany, and Portugal, were sold the heavily marketed ‘no risk’ financial package between 2006 and 2008 by Landsbanki Luxembourg. However, when the bank and its parent company in Iceland collapsed in the autumn of 2008, victims were shocked to find they were treated as debtors of the bank rather than victims and found their homes were at risk from administrator Yvette Hamilius. And despite court victories against Landsbanki Luxembourg over equity release in France and bank directors being jailed in Iceland, the courts of the Grand Duchy refuses to stage a fair trial based on the victims’ allegations say lawyers. The legal team representing groups of victims - including the

180 members of the Landsbanki Victims Action Group on the Costa Blanca, Costa del Sol, and the Balearic Islands - have accused Luxembourg of being a “rogue cancerous state”. Bernard Maingain, Maxence Laugier, Benjamin Bodig and Juan Espejo, have already sent a 20 page file to the European commission demanding a full inquiry into Luxembourg as a financial centre and the Landsbanki affair. They also point out the recent ‘Luxileaks’ revelations back up the position held by equity release victims. In a press release they stated how the leaks “reveal practices of collusion between private economic operators, the exorbitantly paid consultants, judiciary and lawyers upholding dubious financial schemes.” ICEBERG The lawyers say the revelations of the Luxileaks were just the tip of the iceberg. “We have evidence and can prove money laundering, fraud, corruption, and distortion of the facts. Transparency at the Town Hall
Continued from front page Those involved include the Central Bank of Luxembourg, who refuses to open its books for audit, the State Prosecutor’s office and the Luxembourg judiciary. “There is no justice in Luxembourg or any meaningful financial regulator. Luxembourg makes up the laws as they go along to cover up their financial crimes and ignores all EU legislation in order to achieve their objectives.” The four lawyers said the victims were refused a fair trial on the basis there was “nothing wrong in the files”, a position taken by the state prosecutor stepping in as “judge, jury and executioner”. The four lawyers have requested liquidator Ms Hamilius step down because of her involvement yet her own legal team served 2,500 pages of documents hours before a recent court hearing – the judges refusing any adjournment to prepare a response. Refused a fair hearing, Mr Bodig filed a hearing notice reminding the court of its duties in respect of rights of the defence...and walked out. Victims’ groups are said to be “shocked” by the Court of Commerce stance. However, the court battle continues and this week the lawyers and victims were back in Luxembourg’s Court of Appeal de-

manding to see commercial papers regarding the bank. And victims are now raising a petition to go to the influential Petitions Committee of the European Parliament asking for an investigation. FRAUD Mike McInnes, spokesman for the Landsbanki Victims Action Group in Spain, told RTN of the ongoing frustration. “They are still saying there is nothing wrong in the files – no fraud and no market manipulation.” He added: “It is good to see the gloves come off and the lawyers no longer being ‘nice guys’ in their respect for the judiciary. “People ask how can we possibly criticise
A jammy month of traffic chaos! IN ALICANTE the closure of the road from the quarry leading to the redevelopment project in the area of Avenida de Villajoyosa is causing traffic chaos, especially throughout ‘school runs’ in the early morning and late afternoon. Extensive traffic jams are predicted for the next month until completion to the works, expected to be around 20th December. Approximately 20 minutes is added to bus journeys and more traffic jams along Avenida de Denia are expected as commuters negotiate an alternative route for the duration of the works which are designed to improve pedestrian access and re-vamp the coast road at Avenida de Villajoyosa on a budget of 686,070€.
Luxembourg when it is a centre of financial excellence – I have never come across such a corrupt tin pot little place.” He said everyone had proper respect for the judicial system in the “pretty little village” of Luxembourg but accused the courts of not playing the game properly. He said a recent poll put Luxemburg second in the world over the secrecy of its banking – a place behind Switzerland. “Far from being transparent and open, it is very, very secretive.” Mike said the Landsbanki equity release scandal was now six years old. “It has gone from us as a group of enraged pensioners conned over equity release to the centre of Europe.”
By Irena Bodnarec IN AN attempt to clean up politics, the 25 Councillors of Benidorm have declared their income and assets on the Town Hall website. It was a policy that was adopted five years ago to bring total transparency to a world that is often thought corrupt by many. A number of the Councillors also combine additional ´day jobs´ with their role at the Town Hall, among which include a laywer, dentist, architect and family grocery store, with their earnings declared for all to see. Within the 25, the Mayor Agustin Navarro and Deputy Gema Amor are both listed in the middle and only three have stated that they do not owe any money to the banks. The Mayor has posted his tax returns from 2008 – 2013 as well as his property portfolio, including details of the mortgage repayments. He thanked his fellow Councillors for co-operation and believes that it will be difficult to find another town within Spain more transparent than Benidorm. Perhaps with the elections looming next year no-one wants any skeletons being found in the cupboard!

The magic Roundabout
New homes for Alfaz animals
Volunteers and customers
by Jack Troughton VOLUNTEERS AND customers of the popular Roundabout Charity Shop in Javea marked its 30th birthday on Monday with a celebration with Bucks Fizz and nibbles. It was officially established in 1986 after the closure of a charity shop and library behind the town’s post office. At first money was raised through rastros and boot sales. However, a shop was later opened in Avenida Juan Carlos and later moved to larger premises near Plaza de Constitucion – again close to the post office. However in 2008 trade was so badly affected by the nearby construction of an underground car park and remodelling of the Old Town centre, the Roundabout moved again to its current home in Edo. La Noria, on Avenida de Los Fueros.
And over the years, the charity shop has raised large amount of money for good causes in the Javea area. Recent donations have been given to the Javea Day Centre, the Red Cross, and La Pedrera Hospital in Denia. Support has also been given to the ECMOR cancer research project, the Javea Civil Protection team and Volunteer Firemen. EMAUS children have had Christmases made warmer with pyjamas and dressing gowns – this year they will receive ‘snuggly’ blankets – and during the recession a regular monthly donation of food has been made to the Harvest Store which supports hungry families in the town. The shop is run by a team of volunteers of many nationalities who give up their time to open Monday to Saturday between 10am and 1.30pm. One volun-
teer was on the original committee but still works every week. President Gill Rose said Roundabout had always tried to support the less known local needs rather than the major fund-raising groups. “I am very proud of the efforts of the current team and past volunteers who have made the Roundabout such a success,” she told RTN.
By Irena Bodnarec FOLLOWING THE announcement that the Alfaz animal shelter was to be closed down by the council due to poor conditions, volunteers have frantically been working to rehome the residents since the beginning of the week. To date this includes 68 dogs and 27 cats. Several animal shelters within the Marina Baixa have taken some in whilst a number have been found permanent homes both here and in other countries, including the UK and Scandanavia. A number of animal rights groups have been very vocal about the state in which the dogs were kept and some angry activists painted the words ´murderers´ on the outside wall. Members of the group could not understand how the shelter received funding from the council yet obviously did not use it for the purposes it was allocated for. Rita Ringdall of the Albir branch of Dogs in Spain said she witnessed some truly shocking conditions and claimed that most of the dogs leaving the shelter were dirty, malnourished and diseased, yet workers at the shelter claim that all the dogs were well fed and had the services of a visiting vet. Her association has collaborated with animal rescue centres in Benidorm, La Nucia and Altea to ensure that they are now in secure and clean shelters.

The campaign is to be carried out in the university’s four campuses and donations may be made until 18th December. Part of a new initiative urges subscribers to register with the university’s YouTube channel to pledge a kilo of food.

Barto gives festive welcome by Jack Troughton VISITORS TO the Inn on the Green’s annual Christmas Fair in Javea were given an unusual but friendly equine welcome from ‘Barto’, a horse rescued by charity APAC. Dressed in his finest reindeer outfit, hundreds of shoppers had the opportunity to donate a euro to the Associacion Protectora Amigos del Cabello, a registered charity launched five years ago. The charity’s rescue centre at La Xara currently has around 15 horses but there are over 20 being “babysat” in other places, volunteer Jules told RTN. She said a team of international horse lovers cared for the animals – many the victims of mistreatment and neglect - that live together in a large field. “There is also a pony club at weekends for children. They ride a little but mainly clean and groom,” explained Jules. “Unfortunately, many of the horses cannot be ridden.” The charity has to find 1,500€ a month for feed for Jules, Barto, the horses, with vets bills on top. Donations can be made via the website www.apac- Emily and cv.es – which contains a wealth of information about Jules’ the horses – and more information is available by dog email to apacprotectora@gmail.com Wolfie

New bike layout By Irena Bodnarec ALTEA TOWN Council have agreed to re-route the bike path that runs along the promenade following a number of meetings with owners of businesses along the front. At present the blue bike path weaves in and out, crossing over the terraces of several bars and restaurants – causing problems to the waiters. The Council will place the bike path to one side of the pavement, ensuring where possible that it is at the same level as the pavement. Works are expected to be completed before Easter to minimize disruption to the bars and restaurants over their busy period.

Calls to benefit fraud hotline double, thanks to honest Brits by Jack Troughton CALLS TO the benefit fraud hotline in Spain have doubled since the British Government launched a major advertising campaign during the last week of October to encourage the public to call the hotline if they suspect benefit fraud, and to urge claimants to report changes in their circumstances. The Department for Work and Pensions’ (DWP) benefit fraud hotline in Spain – 900 55 44 40 – has seen a surge in vital tip-offs that fraud investigators are now pursuing to verify if people are claiming benefits illegally. Awareness of the campaign and associated media coverage among expatriates in Spain, and their willingness to call the hotline, is helping investigators to reduce the waste of honest taxpayers’ money on fraudsters. Work and Pensions Minister
M a r k
Harper said:
“Hard working taxpayers have had enough of fraudsters taking money which is meant for genuine claimants, which is why we’re seeing so many people taking action by calling the hotline. We know it’s a small minority who commit benefit fraud but I would urge anyone who has suspicions to call the free and confidential number or report them anonymously online.” Worldwide, someone is reported to benefit fraud hotlines every minute of every working day on average, and in the last year alone nearly 60,000 fraud investigations have been launched. The Government has recovered nearly one billion pounds of wrongly paid benefits in the last year, and has introduced a raft of measures to crack down on people who cheat the
system - both abroad and in the UK – including: Tough new rules so that 40% of individuals’ benefits can be taken to repay stolen cash - on top of any fine or custodial sentence handed out by the courts; Increased penalties from £2,000 to £5,000, without taking a fraudster to court; A new £50 civil penalty for claimants who negligently give incorrect information on their claims or fail to report a change in circumstances which results in overpayments. If you suspect a benefit cheat, call the confidential hotline on 900 55 44 40 - open from 8am to 4pm every weekday in Spain - or report them online at www.dwp. gov.uk/benefit-thieves-spain.

On entering the prison Pantoja was issued with cleaning products and toiletries as well as personal clothing and bedding. She will be required to share common showers with other prisoners. She could be allowed regular ‘days out’ on release from May of 2015 once she has completed 25% of her sentence.

Spain achieves new October tourism record
by Jan Gamm EX-PRESIDENT of the Castellón Provincial Government, Carlos Fabra, is to start his four-year prison sentence for fraud by the beginning of next week after receiving notice from the Justice Ministry that his appeal had been turned down. He also has a pardon request lodged with the Constitutional Court which is considered unlikely to be successful. Fabra hedged his bets on being convicted of defrauding the government of 700,000€ back in 2003, believing he would not be sent to jail – as a result his preparations for appeal were considerably delayed. Had he received a sentence of only two years Carlos he would not have been required to face prison. Fabra
We will not stop looking for you STUDENTS IN Javea have held a rally in the courtyard of their college, IES Number One, six months after 15-yearold Khrystyna Savenchuk went missing in May. Her disappearance remains a mystery but her schoolmates are determined she will not be forgotten, taking the opportunity on the International Day for Children’s Rights on 20th November to use their considerable networking skills to broadcast awareness of Khrystyna’s plight through social platforms, with the message ‘We will not stop looking for you…’ Ukrainian Khrystyna had been living with her parents in Javea for three years before she disappeared.

Benidorm’s 31st 10km Half Marathon by Jan Gamm BENIDORM HOSTED its famous 10K Half Marathon on Sunday, an incredible 2,220 runners taking part. A cloudy sky and mild temperatures made ideal running conditions - although the sun made an appropriate appearance to celebrate the finish! This year the race was organised by Grupo Brotons for the third consecutive year, sponsored by Casino Mediterraneo and Sport Zone. Facilities included refreshments at various points throughout and expert medical and fitness support available not only from the Cruz Roja and Civil Protection Units but also the city’s many sporting clubs and sport retails outlets. THE INTERNATIONAL 10K Mayor Agustín Navarro, accompanied by Sports Councillor Miguel Llorca opened the International 10km event that included 748 runners. First over the line was Juan Antonio Gil, Urban Running Club, clocking an incredible 33 minutes! Second was Alvaro Trujillo and third Moussa Kadfi. New noise mediator
By Irena Bodnarec AFTER 2 years at the helm, Richard Romero, President of Ociobal in Benidorm - the bar and nightclub association has resigned. Over the years much controversy has arisen between neighbourhood associations and business owners over noise, especially in the Old Town. The problem tends to surface more over the busy Summer period, when the resort is full of holiday makers and people spend more time outside. The police have been involved in several altercations between locals, tourists and bar owners over noise levels. The new President is Victor Navarro, Director of the KU Group which has popular venues such as the Guinness Bar, KU Lounge Café and KU Moon nightclub within its group so will have a vested interest. He said that his aim is to bring harmony to the resort – bringing in necessary measures to allow neighbours to sleep but at the same time to allow businesses to function in this tourist destination.

Jet2 flying high by Jack Troughton THE COSTA BLANCA tourist industry was urged to reach for the sky with airline Jet2.com and tour operator Jet2holidays in 2015 in a “long term win, win relationship”, by Chief Executive Officer Steve Heapy. At a special presentation to hoteliers, businessmen, and tourist officials, he and a team of five directors from the UK were upbeat by the growth of the brand and its ability to fly visitors into the region. Speaking at the Melia Benidorm, he said Jet2.com and Jet2holidays were “actually growing” in a difficult market and offered “a partnership not a dictatorship” to hotels in the resort and across the Costa Blanca. Mr Heapy, CEO of both companies, said unlike other large operators, Jet2holidays did not demand exclusivity of its products. “We give hotels the confidence and courage to
say ‘no’ to big operators who hold a gun to their heads over exclusivity. “We know we have a better product and a better price than our competitors – we are not scared of our competitors because we are better...they are scared of us and that’s why they try to keep us out of hotels. “We will go into any hotel with a competitor and we will beat them... we fly our aircraft and you fill your hotels. We are a young and dynamic company and will remain so.” The meeting heard that annual results announced in March this year showed the Leeds-based group had a turnover of £1.1 billion, up 29%, with a net profit of £42.1 million. Mr Heapy said they were “very strong” financially and committed to re-investing in the brand, including Jet2.com’s fleet of aircraft which will grow to 59 in 2015. AIRPORTS He said the airline – voted Brit-
ain’s best short haul operator by travel agents – operated from seven UK airports – Glasgow, Edinburgh, Belfast, Manchester, Leeds Bradford, East Midlands, and Newcastle – and one overseas base at Alicante, where two aircraft are stationed. Jet2.com flies to 61 destinations in 21 countries taking bookings through its website, call centre and travel agents – and carrying 5.61 million people last year. Mr Heapy said the company trained its own pilots and had invested £10 million in a slight simulator centre to insure it had one of the best training schemes in the UK. “We are also obsessed with quality; we want to be the best.” And the meeting was told Jet2holidays offered 47 beach and city destinations – using 2,500 hotels - “and uses our airline because it is the best.” Mr Heapy said Jet2holidays was the biggest operator flying into Alicante from the north of the UK. “This

Virtual tecnology in the classroom
By Irena Bodnarec A BENIDORM secondary school, IES Mediterránea has been chosen to spearhead a new virtual teaching project ´MUST´ Maths understanding with help of Science and Technology. The European Union has approved a grant of 106,000 euros to fund a two year programme to allow students to learn maths and science through their mobile devices. The project aims to develop a teaching tool which can be accessed from
any location, not necessarily the classroom and enable students, via online tutorials and interactive exercises to learn. The first meeting was held last in Benidorm last weekend, with representatives from institutes in Poland, Slovenia and Romania who are also taking part in the program, a digital education services company from Villa Joyosa and Cefire in Alicante – a teacher training centre on behalf of the Ministry of Education. Luis Gonzalez, Director of the IES stated

that students tend to learn quicker via interactive platforms using smartphones, tablets and computers and with Spain lagging behind its European counterparts in these subjects it may accelerate their performance and results. However he was quick to point out that this will not replace the traditional teacher in the classroom but be an additional learning tool. The first phase of the project will be tested on a small selection of 4th year students at the IES school then the following year rolled out to 600 students across four European countries and involve 50 teachers.

Ana Mato steps down
Ana Mato
by Jan Gamm HEALTH MINISTER Ana Mato has resigned amid accusations of benefiting from illegal payments and receiving gifts. Mato’s ex-husband, Jesus Sepulveda, was discovered to be linked to the Gurtel network and although Mato has not
been formally cited as an official suspect she will be required to attend court and decided to fall on her sword ‘for the good of the government’. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has taken the opportunity in the wake of Mato’s resignation to announce that a new set of initiatives will be launched to combat corruption.
Costa Blanca family fostering
A TALK on foster care was given at the Llorca Llinares Social Centre in Benidorm this week. Information outlined the plight of children who for any number of reasons might be unable to live at home with their families and therefore require short term care within a stable and nurturing environment. The talk was conducted in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare and offered guidelines on how to apply to become a foster parent. Foster care was introduced in Spain in 1987, when new legislation created a child care system intended to provide a better alternative for children needing out-of-home placement. Until then, the only option had been residential care, in which children often remained for many years, if not their entire childhood.

Why won’t the council do anything? MOST PEOPLE who live in the Campoamor area will have seen the monstrosity that is the new Chinese bazaar shop. While you are buying items that you know will break the very next day, please spare a thought for the residents around it. For the past six months we have endured hours of building work, noisy machines and dust and dirt, all day every day from 8am till at least 8pm. Now it has finally opened we are fighting a constant battle with the rubbish that they do not take away, mounting daily, attracting rats, stray cats etc. Considering that this is also a food store, it makes me wonder just how suitable they are to be handling food. I read a while ago about the same problem with their other store on Cabo Roig regarding rubbish and it looks like it will be the same
here. Why don’t the council do anything about it? I will forward this letter to the council as well. Chinese stores all sell the same rubbish that breaks on the first use, bringing nothing to the community, here to make a fast buck out of people who by now should know better: we definitely do not need one on every street corner. We all suspect they pay no tax. Other legitimate tax-paying businesses around them include the dress shop, two supermarkets and hardware stores, all of whom have served our community for many years and like you and I pay their hard earned money to the Spanish government when asked to do so. Why should we work hard and pay tax only to hand it over to someone who sells products not fit for use or fake - who knows
what’s in that tin of beans labelled Heinz, it could be anything... I know the Chinese have invested heavily in Spain, but we need to wake up and realise that it is we ordinary people repaying that debt. Name and address supplied
A lesson to us all...
THE EXPAT who lost her husband should have been advised to withdraw the money she needed from the bank before informing them of her husband’s death. This is common practice- the bank knows this will go on, and usually turns a blind eye. Sometimes an understanding bank manager will allow bills to continue to be paid. In some cases they don’t freeze the joint account. Why did the lady not have funeral insurance or a funeral plan? Having lived in Spain 15 years, she must have known about them, as they are widely publicised. The property cannot be sold until after the inheritance tax (which, strangely, was not mentioned) has been paid. All her husband’s worldwide assets will be taken into account for this. It does sound as if the lawyer took advantage of her vulnerable situation. Perhaps Citizens Advice could advise her about the legality of the document he persuaded her to sign. I cannot understand about her having to pay €35k to sort her problems. Does it refer to Inheritance Tax, which is another thing she will face, or Capital Gains tax when she eventually sells her property? How much would the greedy lawyer charge her for his services? Hopefully, she has been paying income tax in Spain, in which case there will be some concessions, otherwise it will be a very costly experience. There are many things the letter omits to tell us. This sad situation could have been avoided, and is a lesson to all those who bury their heads in the sand, unwilling, or just not wanting to plan for an event that will happen at some time during their lives in Spain. Supporting Women by Irena Bodnarec THE UNITED Nations has designated the 25th November as The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women – and both the towns of Benidorm and Alfaz del Pi observed the important day. In Benidorm there was a lunchtime rally and ceremony in the Town Hall square, with officials from the Town Hall attending and the Councillor for Equality Angeles Valdiviesa, reading out a manifesto
to raise public awareness. It was highlighted that this year alone 45 women have been killed by their violent partners in Spain and each of their names were read out after which a minutes silence was observed. Many of the attendees left a purple handprint on a mural to show their support and solidarity. Alfaz held a march around the streets of the town, which also ended with the reading of a manifesto, asking for more support from the Government and financial help to care for the victims of violence.

A Tribute to Lynda Bellingham: the OXO lady IT WAS very sad that Lynda died so young of cancer. This horrid disease attacks any age and is devastating when it happens.
by
Jennifer Cunningham
Michael, whom she married, was on BBC television last week trying to be brave. I understand the cancer was missed for some time and now her sons are understandably very angry. Linda had become even more glamorous since she found happiness, and to lose that joy so young is not okay. Her husband went on to say that he misses her very much. I know losing someone dear to you and pain walk hand in hand. I again related to Michael when he explained that Lynda was worried that her husband had no idea of what to do regarding the funeral arrangements, banks, and general household matters. He went on to say that Lynda was very shocked on learning that people in the UK are not good at talking about death or wills, and she obviously felt very passionate about the subject and wanted to make a TV programme regarding the importance of families discussing the procedures to follow when death visits. What an interesting programme that would have been – real sound advice. I have for years recommended via my radio programmes and articles to take a little time and plan for the future. Not easy to do but oh so vital, especially when living in another country. I really admire how well she prepared for her death and in doing so helped many people to accept the inevitable. Many of us will stop and think how wise the OXO lady became, and yes, many will miss her smile on our screens when of course we remember happier times. During my recent holiday in Belgium I was reminded
of the UK and felt so nostalgic seeing multi-coloured leaves floating to the ground. The countryside is very green, and such an abundance of excellent restaurants, with cheeses that I just couldn´t avoid eating. Another bonus was the motorways – superbly maintained and full overhead lighting every foot of the way – what joy. I found the Belgium people, especially in the Frenchspeaking part, very sympathetic and very happy to talk in English. I visited the Ardennes, where the Battle of the Bulge took place. In Bastogne the new museum dedicated to this part of the war was very humbling. 80,000 Americans died in just a few weeks as they were surrounded by Germans, including the Elite Panzer division. The Americans thought that the war was ending and they were in the Ardennes preparing to liberate only, not expecting to fight in the most ferocious and revengeful attack by the Germans. Not only was there a huge loss of American life, the Belgians also suffered revenge killings in the aftermath of the battle. The monument to all these victims is magnificent and made me feel very humble and sad – sad, because it would appear that man has learned very little about killing, and going to war. Bastogne itself is now a thriving village, set in beautiful countryside, but you are never far away from being reminded of the war. There is a very interesting cafe called NUTS (after General Patton’s statement ‘NUTS – we are going to win’). It is also in remembrance of the Americans, with many photos and memorabilia given
to them by the veterans. I was also taken to Brussels: what an amazing place, the very new and impressive EU buildings and the original old part, which is magnificent and full of historical buildings, shops and cafes offering hungry customers such joy, such as one of my favourites - a kilo of mussels, cooked in various ways. On walking around the enormous site of the EU, I felt like a midget, not only were they tall, they were truly impressive and so many of them. On seeing all the flags fluttering, I had a moment’s silence, thinking if the UK came out of the EU, what then? One other place of interest visited was the location of the Battle of Waterloo, and next year is the 200th anniversary. It is as though time stood still because the land is protected and has never being built on and therefore they will be doing re-enactments for the celebrations that should be spectacular. And Mons, another very important area during the war, next year will be the Cultural Capital of Europe. It may be a small country, but so interesting and alive, a gem with a chequered history. I suppose that living in Spain for so many years, I was overwhelmed by the countryside with the bonus of the hospitality of the people and enjoyed the different culture. And as I very rarely go back to the UK, it was a complete joy. Yes I will be doing it again, and anyone thinking of going to Belgium – do. Flights are direct and inexpensive.
HELP’S Christmas cracker! A delighted Elaine Horton, HELP’s President, told RTN: “The bazaar has been absolutely brilliant this year – members of the public came out in their hundreds.” And she said by the end of 2014, HELP would have spent 41,500€ supporting the charity’s social care projects and making donations to aid other charities. “It’s a lot of money.” Elaine also paid tribute to all her volunteers. “They are a brilliant team. Breakfast Art reaches Eras de la Sal
THE ICONIC Eras de La Sal, beside the Habaneras Fountain and Office of Tourism was the place to be on Sunday morning to share and enjoy your breakfast with old and new friends. More than fifty people attended the latest event, the fourth, that’s organised by Torrevieja’s Department of Citizen Participation. Eras de la Sal brought together members from many associations and local residents, who brought their picnic lunch to the site and throughout the morning shared their traditions with some showing off the techniques used to make both crafts and gourmet breakfast dishes. Agustina Esteve, Councillor for Citizen Participation, attended the event and oversaw a contest of the posters used to help advertise each breakfast throughout the year. Early in 2015, an exhibition of Posters and photographs of all who participated is also planned. Agustina said, “In short, BREAKFAST-ART is deepening existing social relations among all Torrevieja citizens, national, international, young and old, in an atmosphere of fellowship, sharing cultures and talents in places of interest.” In the past, the event has been held in the Plaza de Oriente, the Park Martha Louise of Norway in Urbanisation La Siesta and the Natural Area of the Municipal Water Mill, in the hamlet of La Mata. Any local group or organisation who would like to submit their ideas about other suitable venues for these fun and informative breakfast events, should contact Jean Paul at the Office of Tourism with details.

Holistic healthy Mediterranean diets start in the garden by
Dick Handscombe Holistic gardener and author
WHEN IN 1993 I was recommended to stop work and retire early to Spain to enjoy a Mediterranean diet it was difficult to determine what the original healthy, Mediterranean diet as various authors of articles on the subject took a narrow, partisan view. The description of a framework for a Mediterranean diet was often biased one way or another to promote particular products and services and failed to highlight that pre-industrialisation was an important factor; the environment in which one lived and ate; and what was eaten should be chemical free. I therefore set out to draw up a balanced description. Inevitably my own model is a personal interpretation of what I had read, heard and observed. I started with the premise that a description of the best of original Mediterranean diets needs to include all those things that a body would have taken in during a day week and month. The following elements were identified, extracted from my books ‘Living Well from our Garden Mediterranean Style’ and ‘Vivir Bien de un Jardin Español al Estilo Mediterráneo’. The latter was published via Amazon España earlier this month in time to be a Christmas present for Spanish friends. Those ingredients that can be available from a holistic garden are in bold letters. THE HOLISTIC MEDITERRANEAN DIET Fresh air – oxygen and aroma of nearby native herbs. Regular exercise – to collect and in many cases grow foods. Spring water – energised by natural vortexes and cascades. Fresh herbs - some for flavour, some recognised as being beneficial to health. Fresh vegetables – harvested each day whether grown or bought. Fresh fruits – harvested and eaten when at their best,
Enjoying an impromptu snack from mini salad vegetable beds
often daily. Nuts – harvested from own trees or in the wild. Fresh fish – from the local sea, rivers or lakes. Some naturally reared meats – fresh, air dried or cured – the best and most eaten only on feast days. Artisan sheep and goat cheeses – own or locally produced. Sun dried vegetables, herbs, fruit, nuts and fish and meats – to eat raw or in prepared dishes out of season. Local red wine and grape juice – own, family or neighbours Local milk – goat or cow, own animals or local often milked at the door. Hillside honey – wild or hives – own or neighbours. Artisan breads – often from families’ local variety home grown grains – stone ground at local mill and whole meal. Olives and olive oil – often from own trees – own curing of olives and oil from local cold press.
Natural colorants and flavourings – using natural features of the above ingredients -wide use of herbs, fruits, vegetables, saff ron for orange tints, and sun dried or mined salt. Note that the list excludes processed foods. For many Spanish families along the expat Mediterranean coastal plain and inland valleys most ingredients were once upon a time self-grown, bartered or bought without travelling beyond the homestead, village or town. As our valley abandoned, step by step, traditional agriculture over the past twenty five years we gradually increased the extent of our garden dedicated to things to eat and drink. Why not do likewise? You can even start with salad vegetables in black builders’ buckets! The two sister books mentioned in the article are both available from Amazon Books along with our other books.

How to value properties for inheritance purposes in Spain
Alculation of the minimum tax value of a real estate property. RECENTLY MY husband passed away. We own 50% of an apartment in Javea, where we lived for years. We are tax residents in Spain, and I have to value the property for the inheritance. I’m not sure what the value is since the real estate market has fallen. How should I calculate it ? Dear Madam, Thank you for your enquiry. First of all, to avoid problems in the valuation of the estate assets, taxes, bank accounts being frozen, etc., we recommend you first seek the advice of a Spanish Lawyer experienced in successions. When signing an inheritance deed in Spain you will have to make an inventory and valuation of the assets of the deceased, which in this case means half of the property. You will need to state the current value of the property, this is a statement to be made by you, you do not need to justify it with a valuation. However, this value given by you may be reviewed by the tax authority, if they believe that it does not conform to the real value of the property it could bring corresponding penalties, interest, etc., You can calculate and obtain the current value on the
website of the Generalitat Valenciana. since Javea is within the Valencian Community. There are coefficients provided which must be multiplied against the cadastral value of the property. The result, which is known as the “real or actual value”, of the property for tax purposes, is also the minimum fiscal value. This “real value” is a sort of minimum acceptable value established by the administration, so in principle, this value would be accepted. If a value lower than “real value” is given, it is very possible that the taxman will contact you, from the correspondent Liquidation Office ( Oficina Liquidadora). This real value cannot be used for all properties, the taxman excludes from this calculation: rural land, vacant land, industrial buildings, buildings in ruins, Chalets or villas, etc. This value may also be inappropriate if the property is in very poor condition. It is vitally important, in the event of deciding to set a value below the “real value” given by the tax administration, that you document and keep all evidences of the value to support your reasons, keeping photographs of the

Depositors charged by banks
by
Christina Brady
Regional Manager of Blacktower Costa Blanca
COMMERZBANK HAS become the first major German bank to impose negative interest rates on big deposits. At the moment the move won’t affect ordinary savers - only major corporate or institutional clients will be charged. COMMERZBANK IS not the first German bank to levy negative interest. Earlier in November, a small online bank called Deutsche Skatbank announced it would charge a 0.2 percent negative interest rate on deposits over three million Euros. With central banks across Europe charging banks to keep their cash reserves with them, it was only a matter of time before this was passed onto the clients. The big question is: when will they try to pass these costs onto ordinary savers like you and I? Couple this with the fact that the Bank of England governor Mark Carney stated this week that UK interest rates will rise more slowly than expected as struggling countries in the Eurozone and across the globe put pressure on Britain’s economic recovery.
Mr Carney’s remarks follow last week’s quarterly inflation report from the Bank of England, which predicted that inflation was likely to fall below 1 per cent in the coming months, as Europe grapples with what Mr Carney called the ‘spectre’ of European stagnation. The report appeared to confirm expectations that interest rates would remain on hold at 0.5 per cent until the second half of 2015, and Mr Carney’s comments indicate that even after this, the rate at which the cost of borrowing goes up will be slower than previously expected. Life Life on the road
ROCKSTAR KEN Hensley still enjoys making music and touring the globe but the rock and roll lifestyle is now history. By Jack Troughton At 69, he is focussed on healthy living and with his wife Monica enjoys the good life in Spain – living on an organic farm with 18 dogs, miles from anywhere. However, it was with hard rockers Uriah Heep; the songwriter became an international superstar, and nearly paid the ultimate price. Two other members of the band’s classic line-up died. Frontman David Byron was sacked over drink problems in 1976 and passed away a decade later, bassist Gary Thain paid the price of a heroin habit in 1975. Backstage at Ken’s charity concert in El Verger for Grant A Wish earlier this month, he shared a glass of wine with RTN and spoke honestly of the problems of making and spending too much cash. “Gary had problems with heroin, with David it was drink – my problem was not terminal, but it was a problem none the less,” he said. “Probably the biggest regret of my life was getting involved; it was not the money but the relationships it destroyed. To an extent it took my eyes off the ball – I was so obsessed with a drug habit.” A founder member of Uriah Heep in 1969, Ken quit the band in 1980. He said the two dead members of the band left “very big shoes to fill”. LOVED And he added: “It started when Gary died...we could make the band sound like Uriah Heep but there was no way to
make it feel like the band I knew and loved.” He believes as long as music is honest and original it is both valid and relevant. “I am not so much motivated by the audience but an inner desire to create and make the best music I can – if I do find an audience, it is great but if I don’t, I’ve achieved my objective anyway.” He has a long back catalogue to choose from as well as new material and with the simple songs he wrote and through band collaboration saw them become Uriah Heep classics, he does the same with current band Live Fire. When stripped down his lyrics are still romantic and he continues to write about love and relationships. “The English language is such a great language to create in – there’s room to say everything 100 different ways.” Touring and travelling, he said were still “an adventure”. Before his Costa Blanca he finished a tour of Ukraine and Latvia. Two days after the El Verger gig he was off to Sweden and Russia for a month. But he will be home to his Spanish wife and their adopted animals for Christmas. Monica lived in New York for 25 years and will serve a traditional American dinner on 25th December. Ken said: “We have lived in Spain for 13 years and built our own little bubble. Outside there are beautiful views, we love where we live...but it’s hard work.”

Such is our success, that we’ve almost outgrown the excellent facilities of the CMO, as some of our meetings attract over 300 members depending on the time of year.” Last Monday Chris Liddicoat gave a brief and interest talk and slideshow presentation about the Gallipoli campaign during WWI. On hand was also Jean Paul, Director of the Foreign Residents Association, to answer any questions at the end of the meeting, and passing out information about the special Padron Desk that is open in the Office of Tourism on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from 9am until 11am. Now in their seventh year, Bob joked with Jean Paul about the need to find a bigger venue for their tenth anniversary celebrations, since the club has almost doubled in size over the past two years. For their fifth anniversary they held a very successful event at the Palacio de Musica in Torrevieja; capacity 220, and Bob half joked; “at this rate will need to hold our tenth anniversary in the Municipal Theatre or the International Auditorium.” Their last event of the year takes place on Monday December 15th at 11.00am, and is their special, Christmas Day, with special events, the singing of Christmas Carols, lunch and many other activities. The CMO is located just behind Carrefour. For more information visit their website: www.torreviejaU3A.org, email: secretarytorreviajau3a@gmail.com.

charity Visiting time at Fontilles Laura and Drew Donoghue, owners of Sofia’s Restaurant in Javea, enjoyed an informal visit to the Hospital Ferris at Fontilles with volunteers of the MABS Cancer Support Group to make a donation of over 3,000 Euros to the charity. By Jack Troughton The money was raised at the restaurant this summer – when both Laura and Drew cut their hair and staged a raffle and welcomed people for drinks at an open day. Presenting a cheque to MABS President, Jacqui Phillips MBE, they thanked everyone who had contributed and the generous organisations and businesses who had donated prizes. The money will be used to support the charity’s commitment to the ‘Santolina Suite’, which opened earlier this year and provides hospice care. Jacqui thanked the couple for all the hard work in raising such a considerable sum of money. She added: “Without such generosity, the work of our charity would be impossible.” Laura and Drew are flanked by Jacqui Phillips (left) and MABS’ Barbara Wilson

Towards the end of a hectic week calm comes from the actions of Mars entering into Aquarius. You will be able to put your feet up and look back at recent achievements which you have excelled yourself in implementing. Amidst those who are so disconnected and others who fear change you are implementing your wishes for the common good. Venus trines Jupiter and brings love with a passion and luck with good fortune. You may say it is about time after recent downfalls, but this is a time not to lick your wounds, however deep they may be, but to take advantage of great Cosmic energies and to put them to the good use they were intended for. This includes your reward. Squaring Neptune midweek Mercury has opened new lines of communication that you might care to take good advantage of. The time is right to tell things the way that they really are, and if this upsets anyone it will be somebody who needs sincerely to be put in their place. You do not do things by halves, so go on, finish the job your way Idle gossip has risen to the state whereby there are now multiple versions of the truth. Although this goes in through one ear and out of the other you are saddened at the depths that people will sink to, to try and faze you. You are all the more determined to show them, once and for all, the mountain they have made over a mere molehill. The Sun dallies momentarily with mighty planet Uranus, planet of engagement, focus and future planning. This sheds some light on a new scheme or project that needs to move on a stage. It is a time of consultation and checking, and above all getting your sums right, and with the current conjunction to back you, you can’t go wrong! Temper, temper. You are angry most of all with yourself, and sulking is no solution to anything. Brought about by the actions of Mercury kicking off the week in the arms of a petulant Sagittarius, somebody appears to be making unfair demands on your generous nature, and needs to be put in touch. Sometimes you have to say no! The scales are poised to allow for disruption this week as your appointments change and there are significant delays and minor irritating problems to boot. Whilst this could be fairly and squarely blamed on Saturn’s mid week take on of Mars; it is also tuned into the approaching Full Moon; after which things should be rather better for you. Salient energies extracted from the Mars and Saturn conjunction this week actually work with you, and yet against you, to provide all the fuel you need to get something well and truly off the ground. There is more than one way to skin a rabbit, and at least ensure that your ideas are known to those who seek to goad you into submission. Your gregarious nature brings a breath of spring air to a situation that needs your non judgmental actions and a good eye for solution. With lucky Jupiter taking on Venus midweek, in a tryst all across the Cosmos, there comes a time to spread a little love around amidst those who need a good talking to and taking in hand. There are rumblings and rumours across all Earth signs this week because it is time to go back to your roots and to take heed of what really is on offer at the moment. If someone thinks that they can railroad you into going against your code of conduct they will be wrong, so it would be easier to give them, “what for” right from the start. It is time to open your heart and to think of yourself for a change. Your routines are for good reason, but there is more to life than just working and sleeping. Above all do not turn down a generous invitation that may very well bring changes, and future plans. You have only yourself to blame if you turn down something too good to miss! Time to reach into your inner self to motivate you through a difficult period. Above all you know from your spiritual soul that everything does happen for a reason, but you must really be racking your brains to ascertain why things are becoming so complicated just now. With Neptune Direct it is time to strike out for what you really do want.

Tag TODAY I got a letter. As I used my desk letter opener for the first time in a long while I opened the white envelope full of wonder to who had sent it. Since email took over our lives any letters are a rarity, and anything that has to be opened by me is normally some form of bill. Getting mail felt special and I couldn’t help but to remember the many years I had a postal relationship with my Mother’s ex husband, my adopted Father. Since writing my first letter to him at the grand old age of nine, until his demise some twenty years ago, we corresponded regularly. A fat brown envelope followed me wherever I went, and would be awaiting me at hotels or be forwarded on from exotic locations that had failed to receive the missive in time. I was soon to learn that we were able to write about anything and everything, and there were no holds barred. My Father wrote more letters then I ever did, and we called each other regularly too, but the letters were the basis of our relationship. There were often long pauses in this communicative process when my Father was drinking too heavily. And I knew by the first spidery few lines just when he was being dried out somewhere in some hospital unit, and on the road to recovery. He would have attached maximum importance to that briefest of lines because he knew I wouldn’t worry about him and his pathological pattern of alcohol abuse. I kept some letters that were so special to me, but one day my Father showed me a trunk crammed
Kenny’s Postbag
tight with a variety of letters, cards and postcards, and I was to find that he had kept all of mine. Sadly just after he died I lost a lot of my belongings in a serious flood in my London apartment. I missed the distinctive written envelopes when sadly there were no more. Recently I was reminiscing and doing some mundane chores when I discovered in the airing cupboard, amongst the linens, a gift tag that must have been tucked inside the bale of linen pillowcases he sent me one Christmas, when I had said I was short of them. It said, “Sleep well on your Spanish pillows my darling son.” The spiritual communication process can be a difficult one, but you do not have to make it so, Eliminate fear when you make a decision to come for a reading. You will be communicating with those you have loved and lost and still go on loving. Just the briefest of messages can bring the tears to your eyes just like my little gift tag did. I was in need of a message the day I found that tag, and Spirit did not let me down, nor have they ever. I know many who say that their loved ones have not stepped forward, or that they have not made contact, and in the next breath you hear that their bed was full of feathers, or a distinctive smell has wafted in from nowhere. Dreams often reveal us to be in an unconscious state and able to take in messages and contact of any kind, especially since contact when conscious could frighten some people. Nobody has been frightened of a message retrieved by me, and many an apparition or disembodied voice has echoed around my office during a sitting. The dead are not sleeping. We do not wake them or disturb them, and hey, if it is communication you need they cannot send you a letter, but they can work along with a Medium, for you, with love. If there are words yet unsaid and you have any communication needs then start the two way process that proves the very existence of Spirit, as they send, whenever they can, a message of pure love and devotion.
Email your letters to me at: kennycorris@roundtownnews.com
KENNY I made a pact with my partner, whoever went first was to make contact, and we had a code. I have to say it is time now, since he died in August, for him to come up with the goods. I have heard recently several people use the password we set, which isn’t a well used word…could this be? Helen J.C. Wonderful Helen, and whatever time scale you set was personal to you two, but it generally takes six months to allow the departed time to settle and learn the ropes. Making contact earlier is very possible, and as you had your code and you both share the enlightenment of Spirit you have a great result in only three months. The whispering of the password, unknown to those who pass it on to you surreptitiously, is him passing the message on, getting in gear. The name Brian comes to me, and I hope this will help you too!

Shani owns the Music Palace
Sweet success at ‘Bah Humbug’
ANOTHER FULL house filled Torrevieja’s Palacio de Musica on Friday night to be transported on an acoustic musical journey by local songstress Shani Ormiston. By Keith Nicol Her ‘unplugged’, acoustic, ninety minute show captivated the audience who that included Councillor for Education, Youth and Foreigners Rosario Martínez Chazarra and Jean Paul Murelo, Director of the Foreign Residents Office. Torrevejense Shani Ormiston offered a real change of scene for this intimate performance, complete with comfy lounge chair, to add a homely touch to the evening. The intimate magic was achieved and Shani was accompanied by two superb musicians; guitarist Raul Ramirez and Eugenio Fernández on keyboard. Shani performed songs from her latest album “Once Upon a Time” for which she has won several international awards. Bilingual Shani shared stories about her album, her inspiration and what went into producing it plus the awards and recognition she has received. Songs
Shani
included the poignant “Lionheart, which she dedicated to all the people who were having a hard time and to remind everyone of the importance of liking yourself first, on order to like others. This album is an appreciation of the world around us, with heartfelt messages and an optimistic tone. With her vocal range and excellent interpretation of each song, Shani changed the mood of the auditorium at will, chosing to sing well known songs as “Rolling in the Deep” by Adele, “What a Wonderful World” and “Creep” with which she managed to charm the public by creating a special arrangement with
just voice, guitar and keyboard along with her own compositions such as “Goodbye” and “Once upon a time”. Shani Ormiston dedicated her last song as a thank you to the City of Torrevieja, sound technicians, her musicians, sponsors Gloss Stylists, Entremares Clinic, Procomobel and Torrevieja Outlook plus all attendees for their love and support shown in attending on Friday night. After a moving and heartfelt standing ovation, a queue of people formed to buy her CDs, Shani returned to the stage to play one last song “Brave” to close her concert where she tugged at the heartstrings of the audience.
A SUCCESSFUL ‘Bah Humbug Carnival’ at Jaspas Bar in Javea on Saturday raised 1,510€ to be shared between the children’s Preventorio in Gandia and Friends of the Children of EMAUS. A live broadcast by Heatfm and a performance by the popular Poco Loco Steel Band brought the venue an enjoyable party atmosphere to the fund raising day organised by Loraine Gostling and Gwenda Robinson, who are the admin behind Facebook group Javea Connect. Youngsters enjoyed taking part in some unusual and more traditional competitions, such as flip flop flinging, an egg and spoon race, eating Smarties with chopsticks, and a treasure hunt. They were aided and abetted by Lee from the Druid’s Cave and Robbie of Rentalmania who ran the games. Javea Mayor Jose Chulvi was one of the many people who supported the event and shopped at the many stalls. And visitors dug deep to support the Actual Auction, bidding on a boat charter, chimney sweeping, and hairdressing vouchers. More than 80 items went under the hammer, donated by local businesses and Javea Connect members.

How to turn back the clock the Gorgio way IF YOU strutted your stuff in 1975 to Donna Summer´s ´Love to Love You Baby´ and got a bit punky to Blondie´s ´Call Me´ in the 80´s, you might find today’s lead story right up your funky alley. The producer behind these 2 massively successful songs was Italian guy Giorgio Moroder, a man who also won 3 Oscars for ´Take my Breath Away,´ ´ What a Feeling” from ´Flashdance,¨ and best original score for the 1978 film Midnight Express.´ But this is not about what Giorgio has done, but what he is up to right now. Giorgio was one of the first musicians to create dance beats and melodies, which spawned a genre that packed nightclubs, and now at the ripe old age of 74 he has produced his first album in 3 decades featuring the voices of Britney Spears and Kylie Minogue, as well as 2 up and coming young singers Charli XCX and Sia. The first song from the album ´74 is the new 24´ was released last week and Giorgio said at the press conference “Dance music doesn’t care where you live … it doesn’t care who your friends are … it doesn’t care how much money you make … it doesn’t care if you’re 74 or if you are 24!” Don’t you just love this guy! Giorgio started his career in Germany in the 60´s, then refined his electronic dance sound in Los Angeles in the 70´s where he took it out on the road as Munich Machine. His new album is due for release early next year and has yet to be named, but I you fancy ´74 is the new 24´might well get the nod. Gives the saying “I´m 74 years young” a whole new meaning dunnit!
IN 1998 manufactured group S Club 7 instantly took off with their super-naff brand of pop music that thankfully only lasted a couple of years. Member Tina Barrett spirited them all to her house with the promise of some fine wine and hummus and the reunion plans began. She told Yahoo Celebrity “it’s taken 2 years to make it happen.” Personally I´m happy to wait a bit longer Tina!

A COUPLE of years ago, when he was just 21, Ed Sheeren took the music business by storm when his first album + (yes, just plus) went quintuple platinum and he won 2 Brit awards. This could well have changed the lad, but not a bit of it! He´s been popping up in pubs just lately singing a few tunes for the locals, and if you were not at The Surrey Cricketers in Windlesham last week you missed him!

Choirs make history
Montgo Chorale
By Jack Troughton TWO COSTA Blanca choirs will make a little piece of history on Sunday 14th December when they combine to sing together at the Iglesia de la Santa Cruz in Pedregeur. The Montgo Chorale and the Cor de la Rectoria from Rafol d’Almunia, together with musical directors Gordon Lawson and Jaime Morell, will be performing a Christmas concert from 7.30pm. Montgo Chorale has been hoping to combine with a Spanish choir for some
time – and the choirs will sing Part I of Handel’s Messiah, including the muchloved Hallelujah Chorus, for the first part of the evening. And to celebrate Christmas, each choir will sing traditional festive music during the second part, ending with well-known carols in which the choirs will be joined by the audience to bring the night to a joyous conclusion. People throughout the world enjoy celebrating Christmas with music and Montgo Chorale has annually performed with great success and 2014
gives the opportunity to do something a little different. Both choirs hope the special concert will win widespread support and people will enjoy the music in a very special environment. Admission is 10€, free for children under 16. Tickets can be obtained in advance from Humpty Dumpty of Jávea, the Hostal Loreto in Dénia, or at the door. To reserve a ticket or for any further information, please contact Jan Dewland by calling 96 577 0973 or by email to dewlandjan@hotmail.com.

Advent Sunday ADVENT SUNDAY on 30th November will see members of the Church of England in Spain join Christians around the world lighting the first of the candles on Advent wreaths. It marks the start of the preparation for the wonder of Christmas and all seven of the churches of the Costa Blanca Anglican Chaplaincy will be lighting a candle each Sunday – and marking the season with other services. At the church in Albir, following the communion service on 30th November, Elaine Mitchell will give a short organ recital to mark the 150th anniversary of the Royal College of Organists, of which she is an associate – of any money raised, a third will go to the College and the remainder to the chaplaincy. And the congregation at La Fustera on Benissa Costa will once again hold an Advent Carol Service at the Ermita de San Josep at 5.30pm on Advent Sunday. Friends and neighbours are welcome at this traditional event and it will be preceded by refreshments at 4.30pm. The Chaplaincy serves the community from Valencia to Alicante. Some 1st person singular changes We are still looking through the various changes that are made to verbs in the present tense. We are on “standard” verbs, and last week we tackled the “-er” group, with our basic example of the verb “comer” meaning “to eat”. Como - Comemos, Comes - Coméis, Come - Comen The important thing to remember is that the “root” of the verb remains the same; in this case “com” and the endings follow a strict pattern to indicate the person who eats. These changes are always laid out in a group of six (1st, 2nd and 3rd person singular, 1st 2nd and 3rd person plural) and we call this pattern a “conjugation”. The last thing we commented on was that there are a few of these standard “er” verbs that make a slight alteration to the first person singular form. This does not mean that they are “irregular”, because they obey all the other rules exactly, they just have this one little idiosyncrasy and there is usually a good reason for it as well. Now we’re going to look at four of these and attempt to explain them. If the explanation doesn’t mean a lot to you, you’ve always got the option of
just learning the verb form in the spirit of acceptance “that’s how they say it, just that’s how I have to say it too”. I just prefer to explain the reasons if I can because it might help some people to make sense of them. The first two are “caer” (to fall) and “hacer” (to do or to make). These are standard verbs and follow the pattern we learnt last week, that is adding endings on to the roots “ca” and “hac”. In the first person singular though they change to caigo (I fall) and hago (I do, I make). Both these changes are to do with ease of speech. “cao” on it’s own would be hard to get across (especially when you’re falling!) and in the case of “hacer” there is an issue to do with the sound change to the letter “c” before the ending “o”. As we go forward we will see that quite a few first person verb changes involve the letter “g” in its harder form and this is an easy sound to make. Another change is “I see” which according to our rules should be “vo”, but it isn’t. “I see” is in fact veo. If you are around Spanish children at all, or English children in Spanish schools, you can play the Spanish version of “I spy with my little

eye” with them (it’s a really good game for learning new vocabulary!) The game starts “Veo, veo” “¿Qué ves?” (I see, I see. What do you see?) You can ask them to teach you the rest of the game, and it might help you to remember I see “veo”. Lastly we are going to look at a first person singular form that is totally regular in speech, but has to make a spelling adjustment so we can read it correctly. This is the verb “coger” which means “to pick up” which, you will realize, is pronounced with that throaty Scottish “ch” sound. Again we have a pronunciation problem here caused by the letter “g” being followed by an “o” in the first person. If we were to write “cogo” it would then read incorrectly, so to preserve the sound of the word we have to spell it “cojo”. Now when we read it, it sounds completely regular, along with the rest of the verb changes. I hope all of that made sense. If it didn’t just remember “caigo” (I fall), “hago” (I do, I make), “veo” (I see) and “cojo” (I pick up) and that I told you these minor blips on the landscape of standard “-er” verbs. Stick with it, we’re on to “-ir” verbs next week!
Children’s Day in La Nucia
MORE THAN 4,000 people turned out to enjoy activities laid on to mark the VII International Children’s Day in La Nucia in the Ciutat Esportiva Camilo Cano, organised by the Department of Social Welfare and attended by Mayor Bernabe Cano. The event was held last Saturday and featured workshops, playgroups and fun stuff free to enjoy – around 30 activities, workshops, games and exhibitions delighted both young and old, with 20 craft workshops and six popular Bouncy Castles as well as two designated playgrounds and a number of fun games. Kids learned to make cards, create woollen dolls, make straw flowers and face paint! One of the most successful events was the Bike Trials and BMX demonstrations on a specially customised circuit. Mayor Cano said: “La Nucia believes the best way to celebrate International Children’s Day is through the things they love – the best way to publicise this event and children’s rights.”

Types of varicose veins THERE ARE four degrees of Varicose veins: GRADE I or varicose leg veins: At this stage, they appear in some places and through the skin as violet-coloured fine veins. Sometimes they can be in the form of stars, called ‘spider veins’. They are usually only a problem of aesthetic but, on occasion, can cause a feeling of heaviness and tiredness in the legs. Varicose Grade II: The veins become more visible and begin to show the first symptoms such as: Heaviness and fatigue in the legs Pain Cramps Tingling Heat sensation or itching and irritation Grade III varices: The veins are more dilated and tortuous. Symptoms grow steadily and appears as swelling and edema and discolouration on the skin.
varicose veins. At first glance, it looks like a dilated venous network, indicating the location and extent of the problem. In addition, you can also appreciate the colour and appearance of the skin, the existence of other lesions such as smudges, scratching lesions or ulcers, assessing in principle the degree of involvement. On palpation the increased venous pressure and the presence or absence of pain is observed. With this data a first assessment of the importance of the problem is possible, which should then be confirmed with other tests such as: Eco-Doppler. The most important test is the echo-Doppler technique that combines ultrasound (to see the veins and arteries and the alterations that may exist inside) and the Doppler effect - showing the flow and venous abnormalities. The test should be done with the patient standing and lying. It is a painless test that requires no preparation.
Grade IV varices: Eczematous areas and ulcers appear. The ulcers are difficult to treat and can easily become infected. DIAGNOSIS OF VARICES The diagnosis of varices is very simple, and in many cases is done by the patient. The examination should be performed standing, since this posture favours the appearance of This article was written by UQAP. Christmas market
The choir rehearsing
By Jack Troughton THE ENGLISH Choir is busy rehearsing for its annual Christmas ‘sing-along’ in Moraira on Thursday 11th December and a selection of festive songs both old and new. A varied selection of music, ‘Carols at Christmas’ will be performed at the Espai la Senieta Theatre from 7pm and it is hoped the audience will also be in fine voice – especially when joining in the chorus of ‘White Christmas’.
Among the older songs is the really ancient ‘Boars Head Carol’, a beautiful Argentinean carol ‘La Peregrinancion’, and the gently ‘Christmas Sanctus’. The audience can raise its voice with favourites like ‘Go Rest You Merry Gentlemen’. ‘Hark the Herald Angels Sing’, and ‘O Come All Ye Faithful’. And the choir is looking forward to singing its rather funky version of ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer’, together with rousing choruses to
‘Jingle Bells’, ‘Frosty the Snowman’ and ‘Winter Wonderland’. Tickets are 7.50€ and the proceeds will be donated to the local Alzheimer’s Society. They are available by calling Ticket Secretary Janet Brown on 96 574 5091 or email janetbrowncraft@gmail.com. A bar will be available before the concert and during the interval and there is plenty of free parking outside the venue.

food Christmas sweetener THE SUGARCRAFT Group of U3A Marina Baixa have spent weeks creating works of art to decorate their Christmas cakes.
Flower power!
By Jack Troughton The group meets every Wednesday for two and a half hours at the Casa de Cultura in Alfaz del Pi, making beautiful flowers from sugar paste – most of the ladies had no previous experience but have developed skills and now produce flowers that are difficult to tell apart from the real thing. Christmas roses, winter jasmine,
carnations, holly, pine cones and even poinsettias have been carefully manufactured – in the New Year the group will turn to spring flowers. And despite working hard on their creations, the members enjoy a social afternoon amongst new friends, an important part of an association for retired people looking to share skills and knowledge.

Lions Den market a roaring success THE FIRST Christmas Market at the Lions Den in Moraira last Friday was heralded an outstanding success after raising more than 1,000 euros for the charity. By Jack Troughton Included in last Friday’s total were 300€ from the sale of 150 raffle tickets for the ‘Santa’ mosaic created by Meri Snell especially for the event and featured on all Teulada Moraira Lions Club publicity for the event.
Meri made the draw under the watchful eye of Colin Lilley, President of the Lions Club. The winning ticket was No 91 – and the “delighted” winner Margaret Sellors now faces transporting the prize back to the UK.
The Lions would like to thank all its volunteer team staffing the charity shop, those who were involved in the market, including those who made and donated items to sell – and those who turned up to make the day a success.

Printing blank pages AUNTY: I wonder if you might be able to help? I am normally able to resolve issues myself but this one has beaten me. EARLIER THIS year I bought a new printer HP DeskJet 2544 and it worked perfectly on my laptop and with my tablet, and whilst it continues to print using my tablet for some reason it is not printing from my laptop. The laptop is a Dell Vostro running Windows 7 and when I go to print it activates the printer but prints only blank sheets: occasionally it will print a footer or header and sometimes dotted lines where the text should be. I do not recall having changed any settings on the laptop but clearly something has changed. Hopefully you might be able to advise me on what I can check out that I might have missed: Ian
Not shown as device HI AUNTY: Today I plugged my Tablet into my Computer but it was not shown as a device. A friend has told me that there was an answer to this recently in your column. I have been on holiday for several weeks and do not have any recent copies of your newspaper. I cannot find anything online, either. Help! (Please!) Mrs V E Lodge Aunty says: Without knowing which of the many tablets you have I cannot give specific advice. However, you may have to mount the storage in the tablet to get it to show up on Windows - i.e. you have to tell the tablet to be used as a USB device. Somewhere in your settings of your tablet will be a setting that looks like “Enable USB Mass Storage” or something like that. Connect it to the computer, turn that on, and you should be good to go. Windows shouldn’t need any drivers for most tablets. You could also try a different USB slot, or a different USB cable to make sure they function correctly. Recent back issues of RTN can be found on the RTN website: www.roundtownnews.com
Aunty says: You are not alone in having recent issues with a HP printer. I have had a few other people contact me with problems with blank pages being printed. Which may suggest that there is a printer driver that has been updated recently, and that is causing problems. It may help by uninstalling the printer and printer drivers, and then reinstalling the drivers from the HP website (and not the Windows update site).
Should I leave my router on? HI,AUNTY: Quick question - is it better to leave my wireless router switched on,all the time - or switched off when not in use? Regards, Derek Aunty says: To be honest that is really up to you. If you are not going to use it for longer periods, then yes, by all means turn it off. If you use it every day, keep it switched on. But if you want to save money, then how about a timer plug, so that it turns on the router at say 7am, and turns it off at midnight?

Focus on Golf Powered by Campbell Lamont Golf, partnered by BayRadio
We are rapidly approaching the time when everyone’s thoughts turn to one main question? What was the golf highlight of the past year? By Tony Myles SO MUCH to choose from, but here are just a few reminders. The return of the TIGER! As we went into 2014 there was still much speculation about the return of Tiger Woods. When would it happen? What event? Would he regain his old spectacular form? Tiger has spent 683 weeks at No. 1 in his career, but by spring 2014 he had been steadily losing points as he recovered from surgery to repair a pinched nerve in his back and had relinquished the number one spot to Adam Scott. Nevertheless he had said he expected to make a “summer return”. His first public outing of the year came at his own event, The Quicken Loans Congressional. His presence helped boost the flagging takings and the PR value, but it did little to encourage us to believe that he would be getting back to his old form any time soon. An opening-round 74 on Thursday and an ugly 75 in the second round left him four shots below the cut line. THE MASTERS The first Major of the year took place at the regular venue and the winner was the big hitting Bubba Watson. No great surprise in that but there was a name in the frame that was certainly worthy of note. Tied for eighth and with an excellent fourth round 69 - Berhard Langer!!
This is the guy who turned pro 42 years ago! No wonder there were calls for him to be included in the European Ryder Cup team. THE US OPEN Great result for Europe as many were already thinking about the forthcoming Ryder Cup. Martin Kaymer made the event his own, leaving the entire field trailing at least 8 shots adrift of his winning score. He had led from start to finish and never looked like wavering. THE OPEN Only one name is remembered following this tournament and it is the overall winner Rory McIlroy. And yet there are two other names that I would propose as worthy of mention. Sergio Garcia, we have watched him so often fall away on the final round, but
here he was pushing Rory right to the end and produced a sparkling final round of 66. But extra kudos must be awarded to Gerry McIlroy who ten years prior to the event had wagered £200 that his son would win a major golf championship at odds of 500/1. What confidence and faith. THE PGA The caravan moved to Valhalla in August and, after a close fought battle against Phil and Henrik, Rory McIlroy hung onto his one shot lead to lift the trophy for a second time. And not too far down the Final Round Leader Board, it was good to see The Gig Easy, Ernie Els, getting back to some form. THE RYDER CUP For the 40th time the US and Europe faced
Head2Head Campbell - You still playing every week? Tony M - Yes. The usual crowd, all mainly retired or semiretired. How about you? You getting a few rounds in?
Campbell - Yes I have a competition most weeks and can often get a few additional holes in. Not quite so easy at this time of year.
each other for bragging rights. This year had even greater significance following the Miracle at Medinah. Would the US come together as a formidable team under the captaincy of the old campaigner Tom Watson or would Paul McGinley field a side that would withstand the pressure that would be exerted as the opposition strived to redeem some prestige? It was a great event and there are far too many names to mention in the space available, but in terms of Captain’s honours all the glory goes to Paul McGinley, whilst Tom Watson faced strident condemnation for what many described as poor team selection and even worse tactics. So does that selection include your Golfing Highlight of the Year? (I can hear you doing a Harry Hill impression!) If not drop me an email. tony@bayradio.fm
Retirement Tony M - That raises an interesting question. Campbell - What’s that? Tony M - What you going to do when you retire?

road test
Tim Saunders Independent unbiased car reviewer
Citroen DS3 Cabrio A FIVE seat cabriolet with an electronic folding hood that can be operated at speeds of up to 75mph: the key benefit of the Citroen DS3 Cabrio is the only convertible in its class to accommodate so many passengers and to be equipped with a 245 litre boot and split folding rear seat, making it
probably the most versatile convertible on Spain’s roads today. That boot initially looks tiddly but after the lid is lifted it is large enough for a standard pushchair (with the rear wheels removed and packed separately in the boot), which I must say surprises me. As I sit inside the top-of-the-range 155bhp model I recall testing a Lexus IS250C luxury convertible. I was at the traffic lights when the sun decided to come out and I pressed the button for the roof to go down. Almost instantaneously the lights went to green and I had to get moving. As soon as the car moved the roof stopped going down and so I was driving with it half up and with part of the boot lid still open. I pulled over as soon as it was safe to do so; a ridiculous situation to be in and unsafe. Thank goodness there is finally a convertible that is well suited to the British weather and to impatient motorists like me. Because the roof does not fold back into the boot but above the
rear window, it makes it more practical all round, which is why the roof can be operated at speeds of up to 75mph. The DS3’s high quality canvas roof compliments the bodywork and to the unknowing it appears to be simply a hot hatch but we know otherwise. On first acquaintance the vehicle looks just like the DS3 coupe. My test takes place in the middle of winter with lashing rain and much to my wife’s distaste I have to experience driving with the roof down. Controlled by a button on the overhead console, the hood opens and closes in just 16 seconds flat, which is just as well because when the weather gets too unbearable that roof just has to go up. It’s just as well that it is fitted with a hardwearing interior that features leather seats and much plastic, which copes with excess rainwater well. But the great thing is that with the air conditioning turned up to maximum heat you can enjoy all the benefits of open top driving with the advantage of a hot climate. When the DS3 Cabrio’s roof is open an aerodynamic front deflector reduces wind noise and deflects air currents to prevent buffeting. It’s a gutsy, fun car to drive with plenty of power, if required. As with all convertibles it makes a great second car.
