Former Benitachell mayor escapes jail THE FORMER Mayor of Benitachell, in office from 2007 until 2011, municipal architect and lawyer Juan Cardona Bolufer, was handed a sentence of one year and four months in prison and a fine of 40,000 Euros on Tuesday after pleading guilty to accepting bribes. by Jan Gamm CARDONA WAS accused of changing the zoning classification of land in exchange for cash, ensuring that a private investor’s land would continue as ‘developable’. DISQUALIFIED He was also disqualified from acting as a municipal architect for a period of nine years. The prosecution had asked for a nine-year sentence and a fine of 150,000€. Cardona The ruling is seen as over-lenient by critics who note that due outside to Spain’s two year minimum, Cardona will not serve a single the court day of his sentence and the fine levied is actually lower than the with his 50,000€ he is said to have pocketed. lawyer

Home sales zoom 16% in October
A sad birthday AN ELDERLY woman aged 88 and her 60-year-old daughter died on Sunday at around 1.30am when returning from a surprise party held for the daughter’s birthday. Both women were killed when their car left the road on the CV-723 connecting Denia with Els Poblet and overturned in an orange grove. Another 72-year-old woman travelling with them was admitted to hospital with a punctured lung but is expected to make a full recovery. The surprise party was held to celebrate the daughter’s 60th birthday and was attended by around 30 family members and friends. The cause of the accident is as yet unknown.
PROPERTY SALES have increased by a whopping 16% this October compared to the same month in 2013.
Serious buyers are still looking for a bargain
by Jan Gamm HOME SALES in September increased by 13.7% compared to 2013 with 27,024 transactions. The interesting part is that‘re-sales’ have taken the lion’s share of these sales, representing a massive 42.1% of the whole. OPTIMISTIC Estate agents all over the region are quietly optimistic for 2015. After a rough ride through an economic downturn that saw the property market grind to a
halt, sales are finally picking up. Not that selling a home in Spain is easy – serious buyers are still looking for a bargain, it is still very much a buyers’ market and vendors are still advised to be prepared for aggressive negotiation when completing a purchase. However, the days of silly offers are done, according to agents who have successfully and consistently sold property throughout the summer. New build owners are still facing the prospect of hanging onto their properties for some while – new build

sales fell by 17.9% compared to the same period last year. Many are exploring holiday rentals and also long term rentals as an alternative to disposing of their real estate. Home sales increased in all regions except La Rioja and Andalusia , where there was shown a decrease by 31.4% and 2.5% respectively. Meanwhile, the highest rates of transactions in October were recorded in the Canaries (50.7%), the Basque Country (43.6%) and the Principality of Asturias (41.7%).

by Jan Gamm CAJAMAR IS informing its customers that the branch will close its doors on 30th December. Account holders have been advised to move their financial affairs to Pedreguer or the Caixa Callosa Orba, which is part of the Cajamar Group.
The bank is laying the blame for the closure squarely on the shoulders of its landlord who has allegedly refused to continue with the lease at the current rental rate. The Cajamar Bank in Benigembla joins the ranks of hundreds of branches that have closed all over the country as banks tightened their belts throughout the economic recession.
Funding approved for new Police Station
By Irena Bodnarec THE MINISTRY of Interior have pledged 5 million euros for the construction of a new National Police Station in Benidorm – however, this will not be available until the 2016 budget. The Mayor and several technicians went to Madrid this week to meet with the leaders of the National Police and department officials responsible for the infrastructure of state security to discuss the construction and requirements. The team will travel to Benidorm next week to view the plot – a 4913 square metre corner piece located directed opposite the Palace of Justice and the bus station, to confirm its suitability. Once agreed the Town Hall will put into motion the paperwork to make the land available and draft up a blueprint, which is expected to take between three to four months and necessary before it can be included in the 2016 general budget statement. The Mayor was assured that any potential change of political parties in the General Elections next May will not affect the project going ahead.
You can’t hide!
By Irena Bodnarec A REVIEW conducted by the Land Registry of buildings in Benidorm have revealed that over 600 properties have made unauthorized changes which had substantially altered the appearance and value of the property. The Council have now opened an investigation to revalue these properties, which are mainly in the Old Town and apportion the correct amount of IBI tax due, estimating an increase of around 300,000 euros of additional revenue for this financial year. The review entailed a combination of physical inspections and the use of aerial photographs, which revealed many unauthorized swimming pools and extensions. They also found instances of change of use, whereby private houses had been converted into hotels and not registered and cases where several floors had been added to the original property. The last update to the Land Registry was conducted in 1989 and will also generate additional income – capital gains tax, based on assessed value when property is sold.

Pedreguer rings out with a new belfry! THE HISTORICAL 16th Century church of Santa Creu de Pedreguer is sporting a new belfry to welcome 2015! by Jan Gamm The tower has not been attended to since its construction in 1574. The difficult task of restoring the Baroque bell tower was entrusted to architect Francisco Cervera by the Ministry of Culture, with renovations costing an eye-watering 42,555€. Invasive lichen had to be removed from the tower; damp had to be dealt with and runs for drainage installed; the
mouldings repaired; the electrical system overhauled; the terraces repaved… all in keeping with the tower’s rich history and architectural style. DIFFICULTIES “The project has not been without its problems,” admitted the Pastor of Pedreguer, Carlos Pons, “and at times the work was fraught with difficulties. But the tower is of high artistic value and the par-
ish was determined to restore it to its original splendour.” The town now has plans to apply to have the belfry recognised as a site of cultural interest, seeking the endorsement of the University of Valencia and Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Carlos. In a special service to mark the occasion the work completed on the tower was blessed by the episcopal vicar, Jesús Sánchez Domínguez.

Manhunt over Costa Blanca killing by Jack Troughton A MANHUNT has been launched for a 32-year-old Merseyside gangster wanted in connection with the murder of Francis Brennan – whose tortured body was washed up on a La Zenia beach in April. Fugitive John Paul Scott is prime suspect in the murder of the 25-yearold Everton fan who was kidnapped in Javea on 24th January by bogus police officers. It was the last time he was seen alive. Spanish police want to question Scott over the killing – while officers of Britain’s National Crime Agency made a BBC Crimewatch appeal last week to appeal for the public’s help in tracking down Scott, from Liverpool. The NCA believes Scott is part of an organised criminal network plotting to flood the UK with up to 40 tons of drugs. Officers want to quiz the fugitive in connection with a conspiracy to import cocaine from South America hidden inside tins of fish and wooden pallets. Scott, who speaks with a Liverpool accent, is believed to be in Europe. He has links to Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium and France. Crimeswatch said he was considered dangerous and should not be approached. Francis Brennan fled to Javea in October 2013 and was last seen in a friend’s car by men baseball hat wear-
ing ‘police officers’ in January. However, when the authorities denied any knowledge of the matter, it became clear something more sinister had taken place. His family made a public appeal for help in March – Merseyside Police believed Francis was taken against his will and hoped someone in the local “criminal fraternity” had information. However, in April a body, wrapped in an industrial-sized bin bag and bound with tape, was found on the beach around 10m from the water’s edge. People at first thought it was a dead dolphin. GANGLAND The Guardia Civil believed the murder was a gangland killing and a “settling of scores”. The body was officially identified as Francis. Officers said the body had been in the water several days and was possibly weighed down but had broken free. Francis’ hands had been tied and he had suffered numerous injuries, including suspected stab and gunshot injuries and a severe head wound. Scott is the last man being hunted in connection with a drugs ring centred on Merseyside – said to be one of Britain’s “biggest ever” drug plots and said to be worth £4 billion. To date 17 Merseyside men are amongst 24 people jailed for a total of more than 250 years. Another Liverpool
man was scheduled for sentence at the city’s courts last Friday for his role in the cocaine conspiracy. Outlining the hunt for Scott, Greg McKenna, North West Investigations Branch Commander said: “Paul Scott is the last man outstanding in our investigation into the plot to flood the UK with huge quantities of drugs. He is also wanted for questioning in relation to the murder of Francis Brennan. “We are working closely with Merseyside Police and the Spanish authorities to locate him – but we need the help of the public too. “If you have any information on the whereabouts of Scott, no matter how small and trivial it seems, please contact the NCA or Crimestoppers anonymously.” People living in Spain can call a special freephone number, 900 555 111, which will be answered in the UK by Crimestoppers’ agents. A translation service is also available on request.

Optimistic Rajoy predicts economy growth SPANISH PRIME Minister Mariano Rajoy has predicted that Spain’s economic growth will exceed the 2% expected in 2015, provided the exchange rate holds out and the price of raw materials continues to be under control. He was commenting at the XXIV Iberoamerican Summit in Veracruz, Mexico. The summit’s theme is ‘Latin America in the 21st. Century: Education, Innovation and Culture’. Rajoy’s remarks are seen as ‘optimistic’ considering the forecasts of the International Monetary Fund and Brussels predict a growth of 1.7% for the Spanish economy next year: the Bank of Spain concurs with the government’s projection of 2%.

Sarah-Jane Morris appointed new British Consul in Alicante
THE BRITISH Embassy in Spain announced on Wednesday that SarahJane Morris is to take over as British Consul in Alicante, whilst the current consul Paul Rodwell moves to a new role within the Foreign Office. Mrs Morris will be responsible for one of the world’s busiest British Consulates, whose consular team supports two million British visitors to the region every year as well as a large expatriate community of more than 165,000 registered on Padróns in Alicante, Valencia, Murcia, Castellón and Albacete. Every year the team handles around 2,500 consular customers – from victims of crime to individuals in extreme distress. Mrs Morris will manage Alicante in addition to the Consulate-General in Madrid, where she has served as consul for central and northern Spain for the last two years. The management of Alicante and Madrid consulates by one consul follows the model already used elsewhere in Spain and many other parts of the world. The job of a consul is to focus on strategic issues, such as new ways of preventing and tackling the most common and complex problems that face British nationals

He said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my four years in Alicante, and would like to thank the team enormously for all their hard work and achievements, as well as the many external partners and charities across the Costa Blanca who work with us and make our job easier. She will be an invaluable asset to the whole region covered by our Alicante Consulate and I look forward to working with her and our consular teams in Alicante and Madrid. “I know too of the outstanding contribution Paul has made to our consular work in the region. Besides providing assistance to those who most need it, our ambition must be to help Britons help themselves and reduce the numbers who will require assistance in future.”

BELGIAN CITIZENS have been invited to pay their last respects to the late Queen Fabiola via Twitter ahead of her funeral today (Friday). Fabiola died on Friday aged 86, having suffered with osteoporosis for many years, although the exact cause of her death has not been confirmed. It was announced that he and Queen Mathilde will not undertake any engagements until after the funeral has taken place.
78-YEAR-old Ortega has amassed a collection of prime real estate estimated to be worth £4billion. His portfolio includes Devonshire House opposite the Ritz in London’s Piccadilly, once the London home of the Dukes of Devonshire. Ortega’s holding company is Inditex, the world’s largest clothing empire with seven brands including Massimo Dutti, Pull & Bear, Bershka and Stradivarius. Despite his enormous wealth Ortega prefers a relatively modest lifestyle and resides in an apartment in La Coruna with his second wife Flora. And during the week he still eats his lunch in the works canteen. Amancio Ortega

Montgo calendar earns cash for recovery! THE DEPARTMENT of Tourism in Javea has published a 2015 desk calendar featuring stunning views of the Montgo Natural Park. by Jan Gamm The calendar is priced at a very reasonable 2€, available from all three tourist centres in the town. All of the money raised from the sale of the calendars will go to the re-forestation campaign underway to restore the national park to its former glory. Much of the landscape in the Cap de San Antoni area of the mountain was destroyed when fire swept through the region on 11th September. 444 acres of forest were calcined and 1,500 residents were evacuated from their homes in the worst fire to
affect the town in years. COLOURFUL Councillor Antonio Miragall thanked those who collaborated to produce a colourful array of photographs and information that showcases the flora and fauna of the town’s most famous landmark. The end result is an attractive and useful calendar that will make an excellent gift over Christmas and the Three Kings. Montgo dominates the landscape for miles around Javea and Denia and is home to rare fauna flora unique to the area. The ‘moods’ of Montgo serve
as a reliable weather vane for locals who look for the tell-tale clouds that guarantee both good and bad weather throughout the year. BROKEN-HEARTED When much of the scenic beauty of the mountain was destroyed in the fire, the cause of which is still unknown, residents in the area were shocked and broken-hearted at the amount of damage caused. Now you can help the Montgo re- Councillor Antonio covery campaign by purchasing ‘El Miragall Nostre Montgo Calendari 2015’: only with one 1,000 copies have been published of of the this edition so get yours now! calendars
Fewer lottery tickets
THE PROVINCE of Alicante has been allocated 12% less El Gordo lottery tickets this year – 128.1 million euro´s worth against last years 144.3 million. According to sales last year, the province was the country´s fourth biggest seller. The lottery commission expects a 20% drop in sales since the financial crisis began and has said that less companies and businesses have reserved tickets this year, however, the average expenditure in this region is still estimated at 66.56€ per head. The tickets are printed in sheets of ten and divided up into 10 individual ´decimos´ which cost 20€ each – the entire sheet would set you back 200€. Unlike the normal euro lottery where you choose your own numbers, the El Gordo already have 5 pre printed numbers. This means that once the lottery retailer has sold his allocation there will be no more deliveries! The draw takes place on Monday 22nd December and will be breoadcast live on Spanish television.

Uber banned by the court

Price freeze
The app pinpoints your location
by Jan Gamm THE ‘RIDE-SHARE’ app-based taxi facility Uber made quite an impact when it arrived in Spain’s major cities but now the service has been banned by a Madrid court just 24 hours after it was outlawed in New Delhi, where a Uberregistered driver allegedly raped one of his customers. The court in Spain is determined to stamp out the Uber craze - Spanish phone companies have been ordered to ‘block’ the Uber app while a detailed investigation is carried out, following a case brought by the Madrid Taxi Association. Spain is not the only place where
Uber has outstayed its welcome – the French authorities in Paris are to make a decision today (Friday) on whether the Uber service represents unfair competition to the city’s registered taxi drivers. And the court in Holland banned the use of UberPOP on Monday. Uber is based in California where CEO Travis Kalanick is said to be viewing Europe’s attitude to his US$40 billion ride-share company as little more than a ‘glitch’ – a drawback to be overcome. He did, however, express his horror at what happened in Delhi over the weekend, saying, “We will do everything we can to help bring this perpetrator to justice.”
RATINGS Uber is present in more than 200 cities across 45 countries. The service offers a shared ride to passengers by pinpointing their location and sending the nearest Uber-registered vehicle to pick them up and take them to their destination by the shortest available route. The experiences of both passengers and drivers are rated on a point system. In theory Uber is a great resource but its arrival in large cities all over Europe has resulted in a significant loss of revenue for registered and fully licensed taxi drivers. In Madrid and Barcelona there have been a number of demonstrations against the Uber app by disgruntled drivers demanding their right to fair competition.
THE PRICE of Spanish toll roads will remain the same for 2015 following an agreement between the Government and toll road operators – the first time this has happened in the last five years. The price freeze will hopefully encourage more drivers to use the toll motorways and alleviate the pressure on local roads. There are approximately 2,550 kilometres of toll roads in the Spanish motorway network and in the first 10 months of this year an average of 16,743 vehicles used them every day – an increase of 2% on the year before. The AP7 toll road is one often used by holidaymakers arriving at El Altet Alicante airport to get them to Benidorm.

Calling all bricklayers!
Skilled construction workers in short supply in London
by Jan Gamm A MANPOWER report in the UK has confirmed that construction companies in London are missing out on large projects due to a shortage of skilled labour. There are simply not enough qualified workers to go round. As a result, London-based firms are actively seeking labour elsewhere, with bricklayers in Portugal offered between 1,200€ and 1,500€ per week for their services. INCENTIVES Thousands of jobs have been created in Britain in recent years due to governmentbased incentives that have led to more than 200,000 successful applications for planning permission to build new private homes. The only problem is there are not enough skilled craftsmen to complete them! During the recession in Spain thousands of skilled construction workers lost their liveli-
hoods. And as Spain’s economic recovery is slow, for Spanish skilled labourers without work the shortage of ‘boots on the scaffold’ in London could present a golden opportunity to cash in on a lucrative and relatively easy commute to earn some serious dosh. DESPERATE RECRUITMENT Manpower’s Managing Director Mark Cahill said: “2014 was a bumper year for jobseekers, with the highest level of job creation in 40 years. 2015 begins with employers in an even more confident position but the main catalyst is big business hiring. Demand is outstripping the supply of candidates.” The usual weekly rate for bricklayers in the UK is around £500. As the construction industry booms that rate is being doubled and in some parts of the capital tripled as building companies desperately recruit from elsewhere in Europe to fulfil profitable contracts.

The true meaning of Christmas SOON IT will be Christmas. A generation ago, Christmas celebrated the birth of Christ. Nowadays it seems Christ has been removed from Christmas, calling it ‘Xmas’ and sending wishes for ‘Happy Holidays’, or ‘Seasons Greetings’. Where I grew up in northern England there was often snow at Christmas and we had a huge Christmas tree. It was a wonderful time. To be honest, it does not seem like Christmas living in sunny Spain with palm trees and warm weather. As a child, we would have the traditional turkey dinner, and ate leftover turkey for days after Christmas was over. It was a special time, but as time passed Christmas became more commercialised, with Christmas adverts on the telly starting in October. With the adverts I felt pressured to buy things I couldn’t afford for people who didn’t like what I bought. So taking unwanted presents back to the shops for a refund the day after Christmas became common. As an adult our family would get together for Christmas, even though we rarely spoke to each other through the rest of the year. For some folks Christmas is something to endure, rather than something to enjoy. At the risk of being politically incorrect, may I wish everyone a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year. Bernard Reid, La Marina
Well done Belfast! IN VIEW of the publicity over the Passport Pickle’ and the long delays in obtaining a renewal, I applied for mine over three months early. Having completed my application via the internet, I then telephoned Bel-
fast with a small query (2.50 minutes call cost 0.0822€). I posted my details on 7th October and received my new Passport via courier at the same time as my old one was returned with the corner cut off, on 14th November.
The new Passport is valid for slightly over 10 years, taking into account my early application. Excellent service: cheaper and easier than last time. Well done Belfast! Ian Ritchie, Calpe, Alicante
Not in my lifetime
SURELY WHAT Mr Rajoy MEANS is that most politicians haven’t been exposed yet as corrupt!! If Ana Mato’s punishment is her resignation only, then corruption obviously pays! These people should be made to pay financially in such a way that terrifies others who think fraud and corruption is acceptable. It starts from the top - certainly demonstrated in Spain by even the Royal Family! Our own Torre Pacheco Council has weeded out a number of corrupt politicians and there have been many more. In my experience and view, Spain has nowhere near got to the bottom of the problem - nor vigorously or seriously started transforming their culture of corruption. Every person I know here in Spain has personally suffered in some way or another from corruption and then from a very slow judicial system. Corruption and ‘ripping off non-citizens’ is systemic here in Spain and for its Prime Minister to say it is not is disingenuous. Spain could be the powerhouse of Europe if its citizens and officials behaved in a manner that could build Spain based on honesty. Pipe dreams - not in my lifetime, I guess!

Your property in Spain may be let out and treated as a holiday home or it may be your permanent residence. In all cases, adequate home insurance is a must; after all, your property will certainly be one of your most valuable personal assets, and you need to protect it as such. Linea Directa can provide online quotes for Spanish buildings insurance. Its quick and easy and we will help you find the best deal for the needs of your particular cover. Spain cover the actual structure of the building as well as the fixtures and fittings. This includes the roof, walls, windows, kitchen, bathroom installations and fitted wardrobes. Individual items of furniture and any personal possessions are not included. This requires a Spanish home contents insurance policy. Music for David EIGHT GROUPS performed at the Gran Teatra de Alicante last Thursday to support the costly 2000 euro-per-month treatment that is vital for 12-year-old David, who has suffered with Tetraparesis complicated by Cerebral Palsy since birth. by Jan Gamm David’s parents work tirelessly to raise the funds needed to sponsor David’s treatment, hoping that the correct treatment will equip him with the best possible chance of an independent life. He is being treated with growth hormone therapy and stem cell replacement therapy, none of which is available through the Spain’s state supported health services. David is now a familiar figure at the centre of a number of incentives to raise cash for his medical needs, notably
through the ‘Hope for David’ Facebook campaign. The concert at the Gran Teatro attracted huge interest, with a number of popular bands performing, organised by Fernando Alba of the Cultural Association. Cash from ticket sales will go towards David’s medical bills. Mum Maria José Ruiz said: “David is so lucky to have so many people who care about him help in this way. It is deeply David and appreciated. When your child is ill you his Mum pictured have to find the courage to get the help with he needs, although I am not a coura- Fernando geous mother – I am just a mother...” Alba
Protection for National Police AGENTS OF the National Police will patrol the streets in bulletproof vests from the beginning of 2015 following the completion of delivery of 21,126 vests, a process which started in 2013 at a cost of 6.5 million euros. Last week a new batch of 2,200 vests arrived for immediate distribution and by the end of this year all agents in the Prevention and Response team will be kitted out. By the middle of 2015 all public safety officers will be equipped with the new vests, which offer protection and resist temperatures of up to 200 degrees before charring.
Students skipping breakfast
A STUDY carried out in the province of Alicante by the Department of Youth has revealed that 20% of high school students do not eat breakfast, setting off for school each day on an empty stomach. The data was collected from around a dozen educational institutions through a programme set up three years ago to analyse students’ eating and sporting habits. 3,856 students participated in the analysis which shows that many students do not eat before lunchtime, preferring to ‘breakfast’ on fruit juice or milk. It was also noted that the figures seem unaffected by families’ income – it is more of a cultural choice to skip what is long acknowledged as the ‘most important meal of the day’.

Flowers adorn Benidorm
THE FEAST of the Immaculate Conception was celebrated in Benidorm last weekend in typical style. A colourful procession departed from the Church of San Jaime and Santa Maria, attended by the Councillor for Fiestas Cristina Escoda and Deputy Mayor Gema Amor. Also in attendance were the town’s beauty Queens and Princesses past and present, the ‘Hijas de María hacia la Iglesia de San Jaime y Santa Ana’ ‘who made a pretty picture as they graced the seafront wearing their sashes and carrying offerings of flowers for the Virgin. The day ended with a procession through the Old Town and a spectacular firework display.

Bank Holiday weekend
by Irena Bodnarec LAST WEEKENDS double Bank Holiday – Saturday was Constitution Day and Monday Immaculate Conception, had a positive outcome for Benidorm – with HOSBEC reporting that hotels in the resort were 95% full. The good weather encouraged many late bookings, with 50% of those staying being Spanish nationals arriving from the cities. November has proved to be one of the best and busiest of the last 12 years and figures for the Christmas and New Year period look positive – with many hotels already reporting near sell outs.

More about gardens and the Mediterranean diet
by
Dick Handscombe Holistic gardener and author
IN MY column of 28th November I included the framework of the seventeen elements of the Mediterranean Diet which I adopted twenty years ago and took into account in deciding on what to grow eat and drink. This list is extracted from my books ‘Living Well from our Garden Mediterranean Style’ and ‘Vivir bien de un jardin español al estilo Mediterráneo’. The latter was published via Amazon España last month in time to be a Christmas present for Spanish friends. In drawing up the list of ingredients I had typed in bold those ingredients that can be made available from most gardens along the Costas and in inland valleys. Unfortunately the impact of this was lost in the final setting up of the paper so the intended list is repeated here with the blessing of the Editor Sam.
THE HOLISTIC MEDITERRANEAN DIET Fresh air – oxygen and aroma of nearby native herbs – about 350 grams a day Regular exercise – to collect and in many cases grow foods. Spring water – energised by natural vortexes and cascades.
‘Last year’s 40 lb turkey – this year’s is probably heavier’
Fresh herbs - some for flavour, some recognised as being beneficial to health. Fresh vegetables – harvested each day whether grown or bought. Fresh fruits – harvested and eaten when at their best, often daily Nuts – harvested from own trees or in the wild Fresh fish – from the local sea, rivers or lakes Some naturally reared meats – fresh, air dried or cured – the best and most eaten only on feast days. Artisan sheep and goat cheeses – own or locally produced. Sun dried vegetables, herbs, fruit, nuts and fish and meats – to eat raw or in prepared dishes out of season. Local red wine and grape juice – own, family or neighbour Local milk – goat or cow, own animals or local often milked at the door. Hillside honey – wild or hives – own or neighbours. Artisan breads – often from families local variety home grown grains – stone ground at local mill and whole meal. Olives and olive oil – often from own trees – own curing of olives and oil from local cold press. Natural colorants and flavourings – using natural features of the above ingredients -wide use of herbs, fruits, vegetables, saffron for orange tints, and sun dried or mined salt. Note that the list excludes processed foods. For interest go back through the list and tick those ingredients that you achieve now and star others that you do not today but would like to next year. From my experience it is really not that difficult or time consuming. If your garden is now fully laid out it usually still possible to fit in one or more raised beds constructed with building blocks
‘One of this year’s crop of Hand of Allah lemons’
or a block of ten or more builders’ buckets in which to grow a diverse range of vegetables. Most of my Christmas lunch with friends will again be from the garden including the turkey and ingredients for the Christmas pudding. The following ingredients from the garden for making Christmas puddings are easily organised and of course they can be eco-grated: carrots, grated apple, raisins and sultanas by drying grapes, flaked almonds, fresh eggs, chopped citrus rinds instead of candied peel, brandied versus glaced cherries, grated rind and juice of orange, grated rind and juice of lemon. By the way the zest of a Hand of Allah lemon is the tastiest as well as being a garden novelty as illustrated in the Photo. BOOKS FOR CHRISTMAS PRESENTS The full range of the Spanish related gardening and lifestyle books written by Dick Handscombe solo or in partnership with Clodagh are now available from Amazon Books who can ship and deliver in time for Christmas postings or wrapping for under the Christmas tree. Do a search on Amazon and most books normally come up, for convenience, as a block.

Reminder of the tax obligations in Spain for non tax residents AS WE do every year, we wish to remind readers who are Non Tax Residents in Spain, that they are still obliged to pay Income Taxes in Spain for Non Tax Residents, even if they do not have any income in Spain, just for the fact of owning a property here. IF YOU live in Spain and but are not registered with the taxman as a tax resident or you do not submit taxes as tax residents, you could be legally considered as Non Tax Resident, as no notice has been given to the Tax Authority. Non Tax Residents could be liable to pay Wealth Tax, but only if the value of their assets in Spain (after deducting debts, i.e: pending capital of the mortgage, etc.) is above 700.000€. If you are Non Tax Resident in Spain ( or you are not legally tax resident in Spain), you will need to pay tax for income in Spain (Income Tax for Non Residents, IRNR): i.e.: rents from a letting, interest on bank accounts, etc. If you do not have any income but you own a property or a share on a property, your tax bill will be based on a calculation as per the Cadastral Value (value that appears on your Spanish Local Rates receipt from the Town Hall, the SUMA office or the equivalent). Even now it is quite common for people who are Non
Fiscal Residents in Spain ( or not legally Tax Resident in Spain) to simply not pay this tax; usually due to ignorance or neglect and especially when they have no income in Spain and only own a house. Caution is needed as the Spanish Tax Office, equivalent to the Spanish Inland Revenue (Agencia Tributaria), is investigating property owners in Spain who do not pay taxes as either tax residents or non tax residents, urging them to update their status and pay the applicable tax. If you are not sure if you are “legally or officially” tax resident or non tax resident, if you want to know what is the most convenient for you, we can assist you, studying your personal situation. If you are non tax resident, do not forget to meet your tax obligation if you want to avoid a possible tax inspection, penalties, etc. We could deal with your tax affairs as non tax residents in Spain. Remember that before the end of the year 2014 you will need to pay your Non Residents Taxes for the year 2013.

A total of 350,000 older people live in residential care in England FEW THINGS destroy family wealth more than paying heartstopping care home fees of, typically, £40,000 annually in the South East, to ensure Mum or Dad see out their days in comfort. AS AN ex-pat, you may be thinking, what does that matter to me? It is important as typically the costs of long term care in Spain are equally extortionate. The Government has promised its new social care regime will, from next April, stop the forced sale of family homes to meet the bill. A year later a cap will come in on the total costs payable, supposedly allowing money to cascade down through the generations. As the population ages, one in four of us will require support in old age. And the state will help only the poorest. Currently, in England, if your combined assets total more than £23,250, you must pay your own way, although the means test threshold rises to £118,000 from April 2016 So how can you best plan ahead and what financial products are available to help? US-
style life policies, which pay for care, first arrived in the UK more than a decade ago. They were abandoned due to lack of interest. No one ever thinks they will need care in later life, so not many policies were sold. Saving extra in your pension to release for care at a later date can be a good strategy, although this becomes more challenging given the £40,000 limit on annual pension contributions. Pension contributions save you income tax when you invest, and a quarter of any funds can be taken tax-free. Withdrawals will be taxed as income, so big drawdowns, such as £50,000 to adapt your home, could push you into a higher tax bracket. We are here to give you free, impartial, independent advice. The Other Christmas Spirit IT’S THAT time of year again when things start to change from the usual routine. The streets are festooned with bright decorations and as the weather turns colder the restaurants and bars are packed with revelers - for most of us. For some, however, Christmas is not so wonderful. Take the time to notice those around you; just the normal people you see every day…The little old lady two doors down you haven’t seen for several days; a colleague who seems to be behaving differently; the old man sitting on a bench in the park staring at nothing for hours; the lady sitting drinking endless cups of tea in the cafe. Why not just approach them with a smile and ask how they are… They may really appreciate this small gesture, so often just having someone notice them and listen to them can transform their whole day. You don’t need to help, or even know how to help, as so often just someone to listen is all that is needed. If, as you listen to them, you feel that they could do with extra, you could guide them towards more personal support such as family, confidant or close friends or even towards professional help which they may never have considered. This could include a priest, doctor, nurse, counsellor, therapist, mentor… Simply approaching someone who appears lonely with a smile and asking how they are could make all the difference - to them, and to you, showing that this time of year isn’t just the commercial event it seems to have become; rather it is as it really
A trained listener is on call right through the holiday period
should be - a time for caring and sharing. But Christmas isn’t just about others: it is also about YOU. This time of year can be very lonely for so many people, for so many reasons. Seek out that listening ear – smile be open to others just as much as to yourself. André Alexis once said, “The group of people in front of her was jovial and paid her no attention. The group behind was much the same. She was alone without being alone.” If you feel alone, even in a crowd, there is a less intrusive service: Samaritans in Spain offer a free, totally confidential listening service by phone 24 hours a day 365 days a year on 902 88 35 35, by email on pat@samaritansinspain.com or at their
shop and drop-in centre at Punta Marina Centre. Their motto is “You talk, we listen.” A trained listener is on call right through the holiday period, so please, if you feel you need someone to just listen, call Samaritans in Spain at any time. The current costs of calling the Samaritans 902 number is 9 cents Connection, plus 4 to 8 cents per minute depending on time of day. Sadly, the mobile prices differ with each mobile phone company, but can cost a staggering 40 to 80 cents a minute, so wherever possible try to use a Telefónica landline or call box. Enjoy this festive time of year, but remember that should you need the Samaritans, they are available 24/7.

Cucaracha Club spice it up THE CAST and crew of ‘The Cucaracha Club’ enjoyed the multi-million euro facilities of the New Skala nightclub this week, as the latest location for their spy thriller. By Keith Nicol Filming for almost seven hours took place inside the lavish and plush nightclub, which after just a year of opening their doors, ranks as one of the top nightclubs in the region. With more than 20 cast members on call, shooting inside the club called for creative lighting solutions and camera angles to show off the club, complete with glass floors and a ubiquitous ‘’Pole’ for dancing being put to good use on set. The low budget, crowd funded film is now entering into its last leg of production, before the more technical side of editing the footage into a finished product takes place. With the Christmas holidays almost upon us, the best may be being held to last, as in the
New Year the climax of the film involves boat The New chases, fight scenes and lots of action. The Skala production team at Siesta Productions are still nightclub busy organising fund raising events, looking for sponsors and even at this late stage, any business partners this wish to get involved with sponsoring the film. Once the production is completed, it still has to be edited, mastered and then the process starts of entering the film into various film and video festivals around the world, starts, all of which costs money. There are a couple of events, such as a Christmas Dinner and New Year’s Eve dance taking place, with race nights, prize bingo and quiz nights all provisionally planned for next year. For more information on all these events please visit: www.siesta.productions.

Christmas Carols in the Square
The Rascals bring the Circus to Torrevieja
IT’S TIME to really get into the Christmas spirit this evening, as on Friday 12th December at 5.30pm, Torrevieja’s traditional Carols in the Square, takes place.
More than 3,000 people enjoy the traditional Christmas Carols in the Square
by Keith Nicol STARTING HALF an hour earlier than normal to accommodate the additional International choirs that wish to take part in the festive event, the Carol Service is one of the highlights of the season. The event takes place in Plaza de la Consitución in front of the main Inmaculada Church and one and all, no matter what nationality, will be made most welcome. Over the years, the square has accommodated more than
5,000 songsters, all in full voice singing traditional carols. Tonight members of various local choral groups, The Rascals and many others, will join together as one Massed Choir, with your MC for the evening being the one and only, Bill Singleton. The Christmas Carols are mostly in English but with a few in Spanish. Song sheets will be available and a collection will be made on behalf of local charity. Last year, well over three thousand people gathered
to enjoy this typical Christmas celebration, so make sure you arrive there early! Mayor Eduardo Dolon and members of the Council, along with Jean Paul Murelo from the office of Foreign Residents, will also be present and in full voice. So don your Santa hat, woolly gloves and scarf and make your way to downtown Torrevieja and join in a local Christmas tradition, and remember to bring your singing voice with you.
WHILE IT might not quite be a three-ring circus, on Sunday evening, December 14th, the Rascals bring you songs and dances with a Circus theme to the stage of the Virgen Del Carmen in Torrevieja. The occasion is their final performance of their ‘Christmas Extravaganza’ and on Sunday, the Rascals invite you to ‘Join the Circus’ for the first half of their Christmas show. Numbers from Barnham will feature alongside comedy items and dances in this colourful show plus a free seasonal drink and nibbles will be provided during the interval. Fresh from warming up their vocal chords and getting into the Christmas spirit at tonight’s Carols in the Square in Torrevieja, the second half of the show has more of a festive feel to it including a rendering of the Nuns chorus, ballerinas doing ‘Swine Lake’, and yes, you read that correctly, a lively dance to ‘Upside Down’ and young Poppy Moon catching Mummy kissing Santa Claus. Sunday’s performance at the Virgen del Carmen, starts at the very early time of 7.00pm, leaving lots of time to go out on the town, have dinner or just enjoy the Christmas spirit in downtown Torrevieja after the show. To reserve tickets call Sue on 96 678 4874. They only cost 6€ and all the ticket sales go to APANEE. Alternatively you can pick up tickets at the box office outside the Municipal Theatre this morning between 11am and 1pm or, space permitting, purchase them at the door. With Venus head on with Neptune and Uranus squaring up on Pluto this is a great time to put your cards on the table, as enough is enough. When somebody doesn’t listen it is because they know fully well that you are telling the truth and that in all honesty they have no place to hide. Sorry it is this way, but this is a test of your determination. Venus beguiles Neptune at the start of a hectic week and you will have your work cut out for sure. It would seem that since loving guidance hasn’t helped a situation that veers dangerously out of control; you have to resort to more drastic measures to inspire someone who needs now more than you are prepared to offer, and a touch of reality. Mercury enters tentatively into a challenging Capricorn midweek, and this causes the cat to really be put out there amidst the pigeons. It may have surprised you that the backing you relied on has been worse then useless, but you are not to be messed with, and you certainly can, and will fight your own battle and win hands down! A reflective time when some nostalgia comes with a surprise connection with the past. This gives you a pause and helps you to realise more then ever that there is more to life than just the daily routine you love so much. Taking time to look within means that you will like what you see, and plan something rather wonderful, because you can. The Sun basks in the illuminated and exalted Jupiter bringing some good advice to you that you would be very foolish to ignore. It may change your views about things; but it is about time you took your place centre stage instead of waiting in the wings for something that may happen, but won’t happen until you take a step in the right direction. The best of times for you is now, under the watchful eye of Mercury in Capricorn, and whilst the fortune of Jupiter backs your every move. Time is of the essence and it is important that you have your say, because it will act as a lifeline for someone, who for some reason best known to them, is holding back and remaining strangely silent. Ensconced in the arms of passion Venus does a midweek double act with rival partner Neptune, with Pluto in tow. Love can be blind, and maybe it is time to strike out for what you really want right now, instead of coping with excuses and putting up with compromises; which leave you unsure and doubtful at a time when you should be certain. Mighty Uranus has gone out of the way to play directly to your heartstrings, but you are having none of it. All across the Cosmos there is uncertainty and a lack of confidence leading to many people holding back or taking second best. The fiery energy within tells you to wait a while, and then the come-uppance will be better timed! Jupiter is exalted in the Sun energy that sends a powerful message onward on your behalf. There are so many who have loyally supported you recently and you will find a way to thank them in time for what they have done. As a great entertainer this maybe calls for a party whereby your skills can be seen to bring a little loving all around. Mercury enters and opens immediately channels of communication that have been closed for no good reason whatsoever. You have something currently on your mind, something you want to say, and this week there is nobody to stop you from telling things the way that they are, and getting all that tension well and truly off your chest Somebody has got hold of the wrong end of the stick, and in fanning the flames; recent events have been blown out of all proportion. There are two sides to every story, but right now all that concerns you is the truth, which should not hurt anybody who is truly responsible for their actions, and which clears you of all responsibility too. Mercury takes on Neptune and both planets may beg to disagree as to what’s going on as they see things from opposite angles. Conflict is something that you do not need, especially right now, and so it is vital that you remain independent and not involved in actions you know very well you would live to regret. The truth will be told in time.

Coincidence? HAVE YOU ever retraced the actions that have led to you being exactly where you are as you read this article? Why am I here? What happened to attract me to live where I do? Who was a part of the process, and how did I meet them? Where? People say that you can be at the right place at the right time or the wrong place at the wrong time, but each does lead to a chain of events that trace the fascinating and highly individual pathway that is the journey of our life. I can trace back being here in Spain because of dear neighbours and friends in London. Had I not moved in next door to them then I would not be sitting here writing this today. It’s a long story, I hear you say, well that is very true but it depends on how far you go back; and it always will, of course. One word you may find yourself using repeatedly in this, the tracing process, is coincidence. This will explain much away, and yes, you are fully permitted to use it, but so many of those strange happenings happened because it was our destiny, or part of it, and it was something that we had to experience to carry on with the formation of our life. I once went a party in Brixton, and when I left I walked to the station and caught a taxi. But what if I had walked in another direction and caught a bus home? The people that I have met and the friends that I have made came into my life because we met, because I met them. How? Why? When? Where? These are all pertinent questions that could be answered best by the hand of fate that intervened to make them happen. I met an acquaintance once on the tube at Earls’ Court. He
Kenny‛s Postbag
invited me to a party in the country, but it was so far away, and my old car might not have made the journey so I decided not to go. Imagine my surprise when a friend asked me to take care of her car while she was in the USA for a year. She told me not to keep in the garage but to drive it…so I did and at the last minute went to the party. It was the start of regular weekends and holidays and friendships for over twenty years. It happened for a reason. If you encounter closed doors on your journey then you have to look for open ones and change your direction. No means no, not maybe yes. There are few rules in tracing the past. You may come to times when you did things you shouldn’t have, and we all have, but if you look back you did what you thought was right at the time; it is only that in hindsight that you realise that you could have done something differently. You may have regrets, but everything happens for a reason, and if you tempt fate then you are maybe asking too much. We can only change the past because it has happened. We cannot change the present because we are living it, and we cannot change what is yet to come, although we can learn from previous mistakes and be put in situations whereby our entire future changes at the drop of a hat. Life is like this and it always will be. I have encountered people who live in the past, and that is as wrong as it is to live for the future, although we do have dreams and aspirations that allow for us to make a wish for what we want to happen. Maybe there is no such word as coincidence, maybe, just maybe Spirit directs us through fate and destiny to do what we have to each and every day of our lives. I for one am very grateful for that!

KENNY, ARE you superstitious? I guess it is a spiritual thing because there are things that I would not leave to fate! Graham G. Hi Graham. I am not essentially superstitious in any way, but it is fascinating to hear of customs that are followed so that good luck can come through. I would be happy in row 13 of an aircraft, and I have walked under ladders. I think that we can take things too far, but some old wives’ tales work well. I had an irritating wart on my index finger and was told to bury my fingernails at a cross roads, I didn’t do this but I did handle live frogs in a school biology lab, and the wart fell off, never to return, leaving no scar. I do say “Bless you” when somebody sneezes, and so far nobody has died of the plague. I think that there is truth in a lot of customs we have developed over the ages, but it’s best not to rely on them utterly.

Satellites Direct has the answers SATELLITES DIRECT of San Miguel has the experience and knowledge of all TV systems available in Spain.
Owner Nigel has been installing satellite systems for over 30 years, seven in Spain. His staff’s expertise (one formerly employed by SES Astra) is second to none. Nigel says, “I think the reason behind our success is our honesty, quality of installation, the products we use and our caring back up service. We always advise on the best product for the job, which does not necessarily mean the most expensive. We always use the best products available to perform the best install. Obviously the fact that we have a shop also means we can be contacted easily and solve problems quickly. “Our installers are fully qualified, extremely fussy and properly insured. There is a big difference between people who take pride in their work and those who simply rush onto the next job to get paid!” AMAZING Satellites Direct has just released its new super strength dish. Nigel says: “We have actually promoted the Famaval 1.4mtr dish for some time and can still supply this if that is the clients wish, but the new super strength from Portugal is giving amazing signal strengths to our clients. To be technical for a moment: “Signals are measured in quality percentage and db gain (channels will break up at 6.5db gain). Depending on area a normal 1.4mtr dish will give about 7- 8db gain on BBC1 (one of the weakest channels), a high gain dish will give around 7.5 - 8.5 db gain with the new super strength we would expect at least 8 but we have achieved a massive 10.5 db gain. This is only just below the strength of a 1.9mtr dish! We are so pleased with this system – it means that
Satellites Direct showroom
customers can have a strong signal and fully working system for only 399€ fully installed. We also use a twin output LNB so another room can be connected and a solid 60mm bracket so there is no wind bounce and a high quality HD recording receiver. We have never had a dish come loose! There is no monthly payment just the initial one off fee. Satellites Direct also supply a range of receivers starting at 99€ for a full HD receiver, they also have twin tuners to record and watch another and receivers with internet TV and movies on demand. Nigel says: “The internet software
on some receivers is great fun, you can watch lots of movies for free, get Iplayer or channels you would not normally get: however, we do not recommend streaming live TV through the internet (IPTV for BBC) as this can be prone to buffering, can involve a monthly fee, low picture quality and is very dependent on the quality of your internet. Therefore a receiver that does high quality satellite for the main channels but internet for free movies etc. is ideal! How Bowie and Bing did their Xmas thing DON’T LET it be said that I am an old scrooge when it comes to Santa time, and with all that merriment just over a week away, let me entertain you with the story of how two men from opposite ends of the music spectrum came together to produce one of the great Xmas songs of all time. Its 1977 and Bing Crosby has a USTV special called ‘Merrie Old Christmas’, and of all people he invited onto the show it was glam rocker and at the time gender bender David Bowie. Last week, the writers of the show, Larry Grossman and Buz Kohan, recounted the tale of how Bowie balked at being asked to sing The Little Drummer Boy with Grossman saying, “He said, ‘I won’t sing that song. I hate that song … I’m only doing this show because my mother loves Bing Crosby!’ Scrambling to find a solution, Grossman and Kohan hit on the idea of writing a counter melody that Bowie could sing while Crosby sang the traditional arrangement. “It all happened rather quickly,” added Grossman, “within an hour we had it written and ‘Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy’ was born.” How about that then peeps, I wonder if David threw a hissy fit at the time. Grossman and Kohan expressed their own feelings about the incident saying how ‘Bowie toned down his outrageous theatrics and Crosby widened his palette to collaborate with a hip young artist of the day’, and between them they produced a very special Xmas song we’re all still enjoying 37 years later. Seeing as Santa is busy loading up his sleigh, how about a crimmy question for you ... According to an internet poll, what very high percentage of folks said ‘Fairytale in New York’ by The Pogues is their favourite Xmas song?

Celebrity clips IT’S WITH great joy that I write about the wee lassie from Midlothian, Scotland who’s got herself a boyfriend. Susan Boyle told The Sun her chap is an American doctor around the same age and that they met in a hotel recently. Subo said “I hope he visits, but I don’t want to say any more about who he is right now as that would be unfair on him.” Aye … it’s a fine wee gurl ye are Susan! FRENCH ACTOR Gérard Depardieu was involved in yet another drink-related incident last Sunday. Gerard claims he can drink as much as 14 bottles of wine a day, and he must have had such a sesh at his speech in Belgium as local paper Le Capitale reported ‘he was visibly drunk to say the least’. His history includes falling off his scooter in 2012 in Paris. GÉRARD! … Hic!
WHEN BEING interviewed on Loose Women about Madonna announcing she is to pose topless for Interview magazine Annie Lennox said, “what is Madonna telling us?’ Anybody know? Annie recently wrote on her Facebook page referring to Miley Cyrus and Rihanna’s music videos: “I have to say I’m disturbed and dismayed by the recent spate of overtly sexualised performances and videos, it’s a ‘new level of low.” That should shake a few trees Tommy!
WHEN A biopic is made it’s always likely to be surrounded by controversy. Then when the movie is about late singer Whitney Houston you get to feeling it will have controversy aplenty. Mother Cissy said to Lifetime who made the film, “I find it difficult to believe that people who knew and supposedly loved her would participate in a movie made by folks who didn’t know her. ‘Whitney’ is released on January 17th.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin
on the Verb oír and standard SMILE: road again with verb sentences Panto Frolics I think I left my poor readers in suspense last week, which means you are all now dying to know what happens to the verb OÍR in the present tense. Worse still, some of you might have gone to look it up and been frightened into thinking it is, horror of horrors an “irregular verb”, which in fact is not the case, although it is a little odd. OÍR is one of our standard –IR verbs. It has its own ideas about what to do in the first person singular, as is the case with a number of other standard verbs we have already looked at. It also suffers from some adjustments to its spelling, in common with a few other similar verbs. Here is the conjugation in full: Oigo - Oímos Oyes - Oís Oye - Oyen As you will see the letter Y comes into play in three of the forms for no apparent reason, but in fact the reasons are good sound linguistic ones linked to ease of pronunciation. To put it simply, “oyes” is a great deal easier to get ones mouth round than “oes”. Just to digress for a moment, there is a close relationship
between the letters “i” and “y” in Spanish and sometimes there is a substitution of one letter for another in various word changes. The name of the “y” is “igriega” – “the Greek i” (At least it was, they have now changed the name of it but that’s another story) and sometimes the “i” is referred to as the “ilatina” - the Latin i. Going back to the verb “oír” you will notice that in the first and second persons plural, there is an accent placed on the í vowel to distinguish it as a separate beat from the “o”. Somehow I’m not sure I’ve convinced you with any of that explanation, so if that’s the case then I recommend you try out this one which works wonders for some people but not for others – “that’s just how it is!” Obviously, and as ever, there is more to say about standard verbs, but I think the time is approaching when we need to move forward to look at our second category of verb which is the “rootchanging” one. Before we do though,

The effects of hearing loss are more than physical
WHILE YOUR hearing loss may seem insignificant now — something you can deal with by simply turning the TV louder or asking friends to repeat themselves — it impacts more than you think: Hearing loss can have a negative impact on your ability to learn, socialise and enjoy life. Untreated patients are more likely to miss important information in meetings and phone calls, and make mistakes at work Hearing problems can lead to avoidance or withdrawal from social situations, social rejection and loneliness Friends often avoid talking to people with hearing loss because of the difficulty communicating People with uncorrected hearing impairment earn less than people who hear normally To make matters worse, studies have shown that the effects of hearing loss are cumulative. Just as muscles grow weak from lack of use, the brain loses its ability to process sounds and recognise speech without regular auditory stimulation. By the time you finally acknowledge your hearing loss is real, you may have already lost the full appreciation of sounds and music you once enjoyed.
WHY WAIT? Everyone has different reasons for why they put off seeking help for hearing loss, from price issues and vanity concerns to preconceived and often outdated ideas of how hearing aids perform. The good news is that today’s hearing aids — like all hightech devices — have come a long way in terms of looks and performance. And independent research shows that hearing aid usage has a positive effect on: Earning power Communication in relationships Intimacy and warmth in family relationships Ease in communication Emotional stability Sense of control over life events Perception of mental functioning Physical health Source: www.betterhearing.org

Nativity is open to all
Torrevieja’s Nativity Scene was officially opened on Saturday evening
By Keith Nicol ON SATURDAY evening, after the massive offering of flowers at the Inmaculada Church, Torrevieja’s Mayor, Salt Queen and Ladies officially opened this year’s Belen, or Nativity exhibit. The Nativity Scene was also blessed by Manuel Martínez Rocamora from the Inmaculada Church and thousands of people took the opportunity to tour the display which is located in the main town square: in the Plaza de la Constitution. The opening took place in the presence of Torrevieja’s Mayor, Eduardo Dolon, the Salt Queen; Ainara Antelo and her ladies, Stephanie Veri and Marta Miguel Gallardo. The Bethlehem Nativity in Torrevieja is
something a little different as the miniature models on display also include a little Torrevieja flavour. Over the years, the display has acquired some special components that make it unique including windmills, the salt factory, the vineyards of La Mata, the columns of Cultures and Torre del Moro, that have been ingeniously included into the architectural assembly. The Nativity is open 24-hours a day and is especially attractive and photogenic in the evening, due to the lighting effects and the moving models that subtly change year by year. The display is open until after the arrival of the Three Kings parade along Torrevieja’s streets on January 5th, 2015, and it’s completely free to visit.

Residents give Christmas boost to Relleu children’s home
Charity fundraiser for Todos Juntas
BENIDORM’S HELP International has been overwhelmed by the generosity of locals at Armanello and Benidorm Campsites. Residents of both campsites responded readily to the appeal for Christmas gifts for the Relleu children’s home. Maria Ryan and Jean Clarke at HELP know that Christmas is particularly trying for the children’s home, relying more than ever on the generosity of the wider community at this time to ensure the children have as joyful a Christmas as possible. “We cannot thank people enough for their response, said Maria, “donations far exceeded our expectations.” Maria and Jean provide ongoing support throughout the year, collecting non-perishable foodstuffs such as rice and pasta. And in addition they set up a car boot sale every Tuesday at Camping Benidorm which helps provide birthday gifts for the kids.

Battery issues HI AUNTY: I’m running an Acer Aspire laptop with Windows 7 and the time keeps changing when I switch off. When I first switch on and try to load Firefox I get an error message ‘unable to confirm page security’- however, once I correct the time it all works fine. I am linked to “time. windows.com” but I understand that it only synchronises weekly. Any help you can offer would be appreciated. Regards, Jim. Aunty says: The issue of your PC’s time reverting back to a default time, will be down to your PC’s internal battery running low and not able to power the memory when the PC is switched off. If you are on “default time” and you try to access webpage, they may be blocked for security reasons. For example if your PCs time is “01 01 2001”, then it will think something is up if it tried to access a web page of today’s date...how can it trust a website that has a date stamp of 15 years in the future! So you will need to disconnect the pc from the power, open the case, locate the battery, carefully remove it, find and carefully insert a replacement battery of the same specification. Response: Thanks - I thought there was a backup battery but it never mentioned it when I used help.
Screen saving mode HI AUNTY: I have a problem with my main computer. When I switch on the tower, then the screen, the tower is on but on the screen it says SCREEN SAVING MODE and the green light on screen turns yellow. Can you help? Sandie. Aunty says: The first thing is to check the cable connection between the PC and the monitor. It may have come loose, and so the monitor is not getting the signals. And see if you can connect another PC / laptop to the monitor to make sure that is actually functioning correctly. Failing that, then it is probably an issue with your PC graphics card. If it is a removable card, then a replacement card can be bought. IF it is integrated with your PCs motherboard, then if there is a graphics cards slot, get a new graphics card for that slot, otherwise you may be looking at a new motherboard.
Printer not recognised HI AUNTY: Up until now my HP c3180 printer was fine on my HP g7pavilion notebook. I just plugged it in, it appeared on the printer’s list, and that was that two years ago. The mother board has just been changed, but the technician assures me that that did not cause the problem. Now, when I press devices and printers, nothing shows on screen, no printer, no status –nothing. However, it still prints okay. I downloaded HP solution centre as I wanted to scan photos, and that was fine. I re-installed the printer, the message came up – successful. The computer does not recognise the printer? The technician told me to install the disc, even though it was for XP (my old computer) but it wouldn’t accept it? Any ideas?
Aunty says: I am not too sure, but you are one of a number of people who have been in contact with regards to HP printers suddenly not working. This makes me think that there has been some form of update, maybe a Windows update that has affected the printers. The only thing I can think of to resolve this is to go to the HP website and download and install the drivers direct from HP, and not from ‘Windows Update’ Response: Thanks. The printer was working okay. But it wasn’t there on devices and printers. I downloaded HP printer and scanner doctor, clicked on Default printer, and found it had come back!

Focus on Golf Powered by Campbell Lamont Golf, partnered by BayRadio
At this time of year there remains the perennial question. What to get for the golfer in your life? By Tony Myles FEAR NOT for today I bring you tidings of great buys! Before you just grab the latest piece of technology there is one important question. What handicap are you buying for? In many cases Rory’s latest driver will be both useless and frustrating in the wrong hands. So I have divided the gifts into handicap sections and with thanks to our mates at CL GOLF and La Sella there is a “get-out” clause for each of them. Low handicapped players will appreciate the following. Bearing in mind that all golfers and especially those playing off single figures will have some fixed ideas about what equipment best suits their game and any gift that falls outside of this perception is unlikely to see the light of day on the course. It is also likely that if such a present is employed then it will become the sole reason that the user failed to score way under their handicap. In the past I have seen these ending up in a tree on Boxing day. So how do you select that present? One answer is to avoid anything that is too specific. Range Finder - the technology behind these has improved significantly and whilst not so long ago many old school golfers were a bit sniffy about these golf aids these days they are generally accepted as tolerable or essential depending on your viewpoint. The price has crashed since they were first made generally available and today Campbell will supply you with the state-of-the-art Bushnell V3 Tour for 299€ and the very popular Garmin S1 GPS Golf
watch is €149. THE HIGHER HANDICAPPED PLAYER The one thing that a player with a handicap in excess of 18 would like is a handicap lower than 18 and so how can you help him achieve that? The universal Christmas present that is never unsuitable or won’t be utilised is skills transfer. This means providing your golfer with the opportunity of spending time on a one-to-one basis with a professional tutor. With a series of lessons booked in advance all of those niggling issues can be identified and corrected. Cure that slice. Drive the ball straighter and longer. Cure the putting Yips! This is a present that can pay long term dividends and will be appreciated. Once again for the Northern Costa Blanca Campbell can make that an easy option with a voucher for a series of lessons with one of the most highly rated teaching professionals in the Costa Blanca. 5 lessons for the price of 4…200€. That is five hours of one-to-one instruction. EVERYONE For every golfer there are perennial needs. Gloves develop holes and become a hindrance rather than an aid. Shoe spikes constantly need replacing in order to maintain a firm stance. Gloves quickly begin to show wear and tear. Each of these items are relatively low cost and as stocking fillers will be higher appreciated. THE CHRISTMAS BUNDLE Here is the complete stocking filler courtesy of Campbell Lamont. For €100 and delivered direct to your door or collect from
Head2Head Tony M - Good to see your mate Tiger is getting back onto the golf course. Campbell - Yes although he was last in the latest competition there were some good indicators that he has regained his zest of
the game.. Tony M - He still remains a major draw. Campbell - Like yourself he has immense charisma. Tony M - You winding me up?
Ondara - the golfer in your life will be delighted with this selection. 1. Titleist Cabretta leather glove 2. One dozen Titleist Pro V1 golf balls 3. Large pack of wooden golf tees 4. Titleist Players Cap 5. Pitch repairer For all of these plus gift vouchers and more gift ideas check out www.clgolf.es and/or email info@clgolf.es.
Charisma
Campbell - No way. It is true he is the golfer with the most Charisma. Tony M - I am worried about where this is going! Campbell -I just think that at this time of
year it is a season of goodwill and besides it is also the time when you need Charisma Presence. Tony M - I think an angry crowd are gathering outside.

Phil Ward Carers Cup THE IMANYO Golf Society is a new free society formed by a group of friends in Daya Nueva. Another great day for golf on 4th December at Vistabella and after a very late change of golf course we welcomed first time players Ian Bell Ronnie King and Antonio Gallud. We should have played at Font Del Llop but due to torrential rain the night before the course had to be closed due to flooding. By 9am tee times had been arranged at Vistabella where we found the staff very accommodating. The weather was perfect for golf, although some of the bunkers were hard and puddled due to the rain. Most members were playing the course for the first time which was in good condition considering the rain the night before, they said if you like a challenge this course provides it as there are many large areas of fairway, bunkers with bunkers all round the greens. (The motto is if you like sand this is the course for you). The format was full handicap Stableford and scores were close. The winner was Eamon Murphy with 28 points, runner up Steve Day with 26 points and the endeavour award went to Antonio Garcia Gallud with 6 points: this was the first time he had been on a golf course and only had a couple of lessons - not bad hey. The only player to get nearest the pin was Carol Murphy on the 8th. The cup was presented by Margaret Ward to Eamon Murphy back at Imanyo’s Bar To see all future competitions, varying over different courses, visit www.imanyogolfsociety. com To join, email your full name and handicap to imanyogolfsociety@gmail.com

road test
Tim Saunders Independent unbiased car reviewer
Toyota Prius Plug-in FORTY PER CENT of AA call outs are for battery related issues. So says the patrolman who attends the flat battery of the Toyota Prius Plug-in I am testing. This test has been fraught with complications. The reason I try the Prius Plug-in is because it’s one of the few cars to supposedly escape the London Congestion Charge. But it doesn’t. No matter what vehicle is driven the driver has to part with money it seems. Transport for London (TfL) charges £10 just to register a vehicle even if it’s a low pollution type like the Prius Plug-in. They take a minimum of 10 days to inform the driver whether they need to pay the daily congestion charge. I wasn’t informed of this when I booked my trip earlier in the year and so with no time to inform TfL it was necessary to pay £11.50 a day to drive in London during the day, Monday to Friday. I could’ve been driving any other car because they are all charged this rate. Then there is a flat battery - not the fault of the Prius but of my little button-pushing daughters. Despite my checks I miss the fact that the internal rear light has been left on and so having left the car in the secure car park in Bloomsbury Square on the Friday night I try to access it on the following Monday only to find that the electronic keyfob does not work. Fortunately, there is a key inside the keyfob, which allows access to the vehicle in such situations. So at least I can put my luggage inside and then tackle the flat battery problem later in the day. On my return the helpful Secure Parking attendant offers to phone the AA for me and an hour and 10 minutes later (it is Monday rush hour) a patrolman arrives. The car park has a height restriction so the AA van cannot access it but that doesn’t pose a problem because he brings his bag of tricks with him and somehow is able to charge the battery and get
the car started. “A standard 10amp interior light will drain a car battery over the course of two days,” he informs me. It’s an easy mistake to make because the underground car park is lit and this distracts the motorist from any lights that are left on inside the vehicle. The Mercedes parked next to us also has its interior light on. Despite this the Secure Parking attendant tells me: “There’s only one breakdown every two months here.” Of course, that problem could have happened in any car. For the owner of the Prius Plug who lives in London and has registered their Prius for £10 and does not pay any further congestion charge, they are smiling because as Toyota claims it will travel over 15 miles on a fully charged battery which is adequate for most journeys across the capital. It is so silent that on our arrival in the city a professional looking woman who should know better simply walks straight out in front of it without looking. A few moments later a parcel delivery man walks up the centre of a side street seemingly oblivious to the fact that the Prius is behind him. We end up in this side street after the sat nav has recalculated the journey to Drury Lane from Southampton for the umpteenth time after I do not follow its instructions to take me down a one way street. There are certainly a lot of challenges to the motorist when driving in London. When there is a heavy downpour on the return journey visibility becomes increasingly poor in the dark and it is surprising how confusing the many traffic lights can become
coupled with incredibly poor road signage. But overall the sat nav is an aid that does see us escape the capital along the A4. It is not long before we re-join the M3 and within a few hours are all happily tucked up in our beds. With regards comfort, the Prius scores highly and it is even equipped with heated front seats. There is ample room inside for all of us and although it is only a hatchback our cumbersome tandem pushchair fits, which is just as well because we do a lot of walking in London and our little daughters can only walk so far. It is frustrating that when we park in the Secure Parking underground car park that it is quite low, so that on opening the boot it actually touches the ceiling, marking the boot regardless of how careful you are. In town it is economical and on the motorway it is surprisingly fast.
