Voting campaign “insult” by Jack Troughton

Wendy poses for the camera

Wendy is so ‘selfie-assured’ By Jack Troughton RESCUED FROM a life of misery, Wendy is now a picture of health and looking forward to beginning a new life with a loving family. Read her full story on page 3.

A DRIVE to get 100,000 expats to join the UK Electoral Register to cast a vote in May’s General Election is likely to fail and an “insult”, say democracy campaigners. Yesterday (Thursday) the Electoral Commission launched its own campaign on ‘Overseas Voter Registration Day’ to get people signed up ahead of the 7th May ballot. And the commission stated it was the first election where people could register to vote online at website www.go.uk/register-to-vote and it hopes the new online process will trigger more people taking part. However, while registration is now using modern technology, overseas voters still need to trust a proxy voter or risk a postal vote being returned in time to meet deadlines – unless they plan a trip to an old constituency. It is estimated that 5.5 million British citizens live outside the UK and only around 23,000 are currently registered to vote – a figure both the Electoral Commis-

sion and politicians are determined to improve. But campaigners say some 2 million expats are barred from voting because under the current 15 year rule then no longer qualify to do so. They also say lack of proper representation enables politicians to ignore British citizens abroad – or remove benefits such as the Winter Fuel Payment with apparent impunity. CHALLENGE Director of Communications at the Electoral Commission said: “A lot of people aren’t aware that it’s possible to register as an overseas voter for the General Election. We need to challenge the misconception that once you have moved abroad, you can’t take part. Many people can and now it’s easier than ever to take the first step by registering online. “Overseas Voter Registration Day is also the perfect opportunity for everyone to encourage friends, family or colleagues to check if they can vote and ask them to register online.” Continued on page 3

Wendy finds true love by Jack Troughton YOUNG MUM Wendy has found love and care with animal charity SCAN and restored to health after being rescued from a cruel owner. Thought to be aged about two-yearsold, she had been starved and mistreated and was found scavenging by bins in Els Poblets – and was taken to the charity’s shop in neighbouring El Vergel. However, thanks to the Society for the Care of Animals in Need, Wendy is now thriving and ready to be adopted. SCAN President Barry Caulfield told RTN how two of the charity’s volunteers had acted as foster parents during her recovery and she remained a frequent visitor to the shelter. “She came in around three times underweight, she had been brutalised and starved, there is evidence she had been kicked,” he said.

Wendy now

RESCUE “Sadly, her puppies had died because she could not feed them – we had to rescue another dog from the same place last year...some people simply should not be allowed to keep animals.” He added: “She is now looking absolutely wonderful. She is ready to be adopted and will make a great pet, she is fit and healthy and back on top form. “And thanks to her foster parents she

has rediscovered her trust of human beings and likes to be cuddled – she is a beautiful girl.” As Barry was speaking, Clinton and Susan from the Dog Grove in olive – supporters of SCAN arrived to bring do-

nations left at the kennels – and began playing with Wendy. He said: “Everyone who meets Wendy now cannot believe the photograph of the state she was in when she first arrived with us here at the shelter.”

Continued from front page AND PRIME Minister David Cameron has sent an email to people on the Tory party’s mailing list telling them they could hold the key to a Conservative victory in May – his party has pledged to restore voting rights to all British citizens if it wins. Costa Blanca campaigner Margaret Hales MBE said the Electoral Commission was doing a “sterling job” in raising awareness of the welcome improvements in the voting system – but warned once registered it was a tricky choice between trusting someone with a proxy vote of praying a postal vote “conquered” the challenges of the international voting system. But she underlined that people still qualified to vote should register and make the effort to vote – helping the campaign to restore a full franchise to expats who had their vote taken away by the British Government. “Each year here in Spain thousands get their vote grabbed from them. Then they are harried for not voting. How insulting!” she said. “Emails purporting to come from the Prime minister saying ’of the 5 million British people living abroad virtually none are registered’ is not only an insult to the 23,000 who are on the electoral Register, but also the 2 million who are not allowed to vote.” Margaret added: People who have little of their 15 years left have hardy any incentive to register and make the great effort to vote. But vote we must to change this crazy system.” Fellow campaigner Brian Cave, who lives in France, predicts the campaign will miss its target and says the relationship between politicians and those who elect them had broken down. He said expats living abroad needed encouragement and an incentive from politicians. “We need politicians to care for us.” And he added: “Politicians need to say ‘We are thinking of you expats and what you do for Britain and what you can do for Britain.’ “The nation is its people and they need to talk to the people somehow or other. They must not just say ‘We want your vote, will you vote?’ Otherwise, why the hell should we vote?”

Cocktails and canapés

Hospital expansion blocked

SUPPORTERS AND members of Xabia Democratica enjoyed a social gathering last Saturday and toasted the success of an independent party launched four years ago. by Jack Troughton Served cocktails and canapés at the Parador Hotel in Javea, 115 XD followers enthusiastically exchanged ideas for the future of the Marina Alta resort and chatted with Councillors Oscar Anton – the party leader – Pere Sapena and Juan Luis Cardona. Mr Anton is Deputy Mayor and councillor for Finance, Mr Sapena is Councillor for Works and Town Planning, while Mr Cardona heads the departments of Sports, Economic Development, Agriculture and Fisheries, and Trade. And the trio thanked XD members for their support and assistance since they took office following elections in 2011. Mr Anton emphasised the importance of an independent XD working for the future of the town and its residents. He said: “We have a duty to continue to work together, united by a Javea for the future. We believe our party is a social tool where the priority is to help the citizen to find solutions for their problems. “We are and always will be willing to listen to your ideas. XD is not a party of the left or right of politics. XD is the party for Javea and exists solely for the benefit of Javea.”

By Irena Bodnarec THE MINISTER of Health, Manual Llombart paid a visit to the Hospital Marina Baixa yesterday – the Social Security hospital which serves the Benidorm area and left management and staff speechless. He declared that “we believe that the structure and facilities we have here are adequate and sufficient to meet the needs of the health department”, thus totally ignoring the two proposals for expansion. A committee of department heads had put forward proposals to expand and modernize the hospital, which was not solely to increase the number of beds available but an investment in the facilities. A union spokesperson said it was “a brutal contradiction” for the minister to say “the management is working with department heads” then come along and dismiss their recommendations. Both Mayors whose towns are served by the hospital – Agustin Navarro in Benidorm and Jaime Lloret in Villa Joyosa are were both in favour of the expansion project, with the council already earmarking a 24,831 sq mt plot for the new block. Department heads will await the full report and reasoning for his decision.

Benidorm mum sells her baby for cash A BENIDORM judge has handed a one year suspended sentence to a woman who attempted to sell her baby for 5,000€ to a childless couple living in Cullera. by Jan Gamm The child was exchanged for cash in 2008 just three days after its birth in Denia hospital. There were allegedly three other people involved acting as ‘agents’ in the sale. The mother said she needed the money to pay her debts. The couple who tried to purchase the baby were each given a six month suspended sentence for their involvement. None of the defendants had previous criminal records.

Reforestation takes root after blaze NATURE WAS given a helping hand in overcoming the devastation left by the fire that swept across the Montgo last September. by Jack Troughton TREES HAVE been planted in two areas of La Plana and on Cap de Sant Antoni – 100 specimens purchased with the proceeds from sales of a special “solidarity” calendar produced after the “disaster”. A small army of over 400 professional and volunteer firefighters supported by 19 aircraft were needed to tackle the blaze and some 440 hectares of mainly forest was destroyed in an area of outstanding natural beauty – 150 hectares in Denia and the remainder in Javea. A Forest Recovery Plan was immediately drawn up and put into operation in the weeks after the fire and has continued over the last three months by

Javea’s Department of Environment. And despite the lack of rainfall, forest specialists believe the natural recovery of the area is “satisfactory” and with become more rapid with time as trees start to shoot. This was helped by cutting back and the removal of burnt pine and olive trees. Javea Town Hall’s Tourism Department came up with the ideas of a calendar featuring scenes of the Montgo – and the public responded. The first 1,000 copies sold out in just two weeks and just a few copies remain of the second print run. Fishy on your dishy? By Irena Bodnarec THE STORMY weather which hit the coast last weekend and appears to be continuing, has badly affected the local fishing trade. Both Altea and Villa Joyosa have estimated an average 30% reduction in their daily catch, with La Vila translating that to almost 500 euros loss per vessel per day – a considerable sum. The fishing industry is the largest employer of Villa Joyosa, with a fleet of 35 vessels – in comparison to Altea which has only 12. The consequence of the strong winds means fish prices have increased. Very few fishmongers have been able to offer sardines, whiting or anchovy – and those that do have stock have increased their prices by up to 80%, resulting in a kilo of sardines costing a staggering ten euros. Local restaurants are also struggling to find suppliers to maintain stock of certain local fish – so you may even find some things off the menu.

Driving Licenses in Spain by Jan Gamm RTN has received a number of enquiries this week regarding driving licenses in Spain, the legal requirement to change driving licenses to a Spanish one and the sequence of events that govern the need for such changes. The law says that if you are resident in Spain for more than six months you are required to apply for residency. Spanish residents require Spanish driving licenses and all residents are encouraged to clear their relevant paperwork as soon as possible. A new resident can drive on their old license for up to two years, after which any license other than a Spanish one is illegal. However, during a roadside police check where you might be asked to produce identification your residency would lead to questions such as to why you do not hold a Spanish driving license, how long you have lived in Spain, so many people prefer to get their driving paperwork completed as soon as possible. The driving license changeover can be inconvenient as the application process requires giving up your old license, after which processing can take several months. And although you would be issued with a provisional document enabling you to drive in Spain, you would not be able to use it to hire a car elsewhere in Europe should you need to do so. Recent police checks focused on mothers taking their children to and from school. On checking licenses it was revealed that many of the parents driving back and forth on school runs had been resident in Spain for much longer than two years yet still retained only a British or International License. If the police find you have been driving on a non-Spanish license for more than two years then a total driving ban is a possibility. In order to apply for a Spanish Driving License you will need: A Padron certificate from your town of residence

A green Residencia certificate A valid passport A recent passport sized photograph A requirement is to surrender an unexpired UK (or other EU) licence until a new Spanish license is issued, applicants will be issued with a provisional document to enable them to drive legally. To apply for your license directly you must first make an appointment with Trafico in your province. Make your own checks to ensure you have all the legal documentation to process your application. If you prefer to have someone handle such matters on your behalf, you can always make an appointment with a reputable ‘gestor’ who will unravel the mysteries of the licensing laws for you at a reasonable fee.

UK to crack down on treatment for foreign patients THE UK’s National Health Service intends to crack down on treatment for foreign patients. From now on visitors from Spain and other European countries will be required to present a European Health Insurance Card to register with a GP in the UK after it emerged that only a fraction of recoverable charges for treatment has been processed by the UK authorities. It is claimed that between 2012 and 2013 only £5.5m of the £230m due from Spain was actually recovered; £17.5m from Ireland when actually £211m was owed; £1m from France against £128m provided in health care and Italy and Greece paid under £1m each respectively despite owing nearly £15m between them. However, failure to recover costs for health care is widely thought to be attributable to administrative inefficiency on the part of clinical institutions in the UK rather than a reluctance to pay by foreign governments.

Rajoy and Sánchez unite against Jihadism

PP PRIME Minister Mariano Rajoy and Pedro Sánchez, the General Secretary of the PSOE, have signed a state agreement at the Moncloa Palace that unites the two parties in the fight against Jihadism. Sánchez said that he considered the joint undertaking would provide “better efficiency in the fight against crimes of terrorism.” Rajoy put forward a date of 24th February for a State of the Nation Debate, which was agreed by Sánchez.

Optimism in tourist market Jose Chulvi (left) and Antonio Miragall flank Fallas Queens

by Jack Troughton RECORD NUMBERS flocking to the 35th international tourism show ‘Fitur 2015’ in Madrid underline the recovery of the crucial tourist market. Attendance was 12% up on last year and more than 225,000 visitors went through the doors during the five days of the show, including 126,000 tourism professionals. Opened by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, there were 9,400 companies from 165 countries exhibiting at Fitur, showing its importance in the global tourism market. And organisers said the record figures illustrated the growing “climate of optimism” in the tourist sector and the show remained a “benchmark” for the international holiday industry. Once again as part of the Valencia Community stands, towns from the Marina Alta

were well represented at Fitur – making presentations aimed at bringing even more visitors to boost local economies and provide much-needed jobs. Valencia hopes to attract 75 million international visitors to the region by 2020 and the towns of Calpe, Benissa, Teulada-Moraira, Benitachell, Javea, and Denia were keen to promote they are open for business all 12 months of the year. While the beautiful coastline of the Costa Blanca remains a major attraction; food, wine, culture, and sporting activities are all being actively promoted – as well as the area’s healthy climate. Javea, represented by Mayor Jose Chulvi and Tourism councillor Antonio Miragall, has a new logo that sums up the drive to bring more people to the town: “You deserve more than summer holidays”.

The local people are amazing DON’T KNOW if you know about the park in La Siesta – it’s nice that it’s finally getting done but there’s been a man living in the park in a wooden shed for years. Instead of leaving him there or even getting him to help, they have moved him off and he is now sleeping in the open air on the field in El Chaparral. I have put a comment on the Facebook site and omg the local people are amazing! Giving him plastic sheeting to help keep him dry; others taking food and bedding as I have done. He is friendly enough and I think he would be happy to go back to his wooden hut on the field as he had been there for years. Just thought this should be highlighted in your paper… Jill Melenchon

Thanks Copperheelers to all

NIGEL HOPKINS and all of his singers and musicians put on a truly wonderful evenings performance of Music of the Night on Saturday 31st January. Afterwards the Samaritans in Spain undertook a bucket shake to raise funds and the audience was extremely generous on the night raising an amazing 565€. Then Nigel himself donated enough to take the amount to an incredible 650€. I would like to add my thanks to the thanks of all our volunteers and all our callers for this generosity. I would also like to offer my sincere gratitude to all of Nigel’s singers, musicians and other helpers for a wonderful evening’s entertainment. And I mustn’t forget the staff and management of The Orihuela Costa Resort for their time in making us comfortable. Chris Sumter: President - Samaritans in Spain

I AM writing in regard to Copperheelers. I purchased a pair of Copperheelers from Legs & co after seeing the advert in the RTN. As a sufferer from arthritis for over ten years in my spine, hands and feet I thought that they would be worth a try. I must say I have been amazed by the results of wearing Copperhealers, within five days of wearing them I have felt

immense benefits. No pain in my spine, feet or hands! I am able to walk further than I have for years and I feel a million times better in myself all because of these little copper inserts. I wish I’d bought them years ago! I am extremely impressed by Copperheelers and have recommended them to all my friends - I would not hesitate in recommending them to anyone. Betty Davies, La Siesta

More people should follow suit

I READ your item in RTN with interest regarding the cancellation of the Heating Allowance and support Keith and Judy Braddock’s comments in every way: more people should follow suit. I think their suggestion that friends and relatives should write to their MPs is correct and to the point. I too feel badly let down by the present so-called ‘Pensioners friend’ the Conservative Party and I already sent a letter of complaint to my old MP in the UK. I strongly feel that all the pensioner ex-pats should somehow organise themselves to collectively send their feelings to their politicians making it plain as to how they vote - which could have an effect upon the results of the General Election in May. I pointed out to Conservative MP Neil Carmichael that at 77 I live with my wife on our miserable excuse for a pension, trying to make ends meet throughout our retirement in Spain. We save the British taxpayer thousands of pounds by not asking for assistance in any way, unlike many immigrants and other scroungers, having paid our dues and taxes all our working lives in the UK while running our own construction company in Berkeley. The Costa Blanca is acknowledged to be warm for much of the year but from December through to April, as Spanish houses are not as well insulated as British ones, we struggle to stay warm by using mobile gas heaters (we cannot afford to turn on the central heating) which generate condensation and unhealthy fumes. So for the first time in 50 years I am considering which party to support in the May election. And why should I support a party that intends to withdraw a well-earned benefit from pensioners who have decided to live abroad? I D Smith, along with other MPs who are supporting this move, should think carefully about the power of the pensioners’ vote. Ron Gammon, Quesada

Missing pig OUR PET pig has been either stolen or lost! He has a micro-chip and all the relevant paperwork...so please could as many people as possible try to help find him? Hoping for good news in the very near future. Leigh and Martin

Bizarre!

BEING ONE of your regular non-British readers I find the discussion around your WFP rather bizarre. We Dutch Pensionistas (wherever we are living) never heard of such an allowance. Isn’t that an unlawful discrimination within the EU!? I call upon all my fellow countrymen to protest in Brussels for not receiving this payment! Does every British citizen receive the payment of £200/£300 regardless of his or her monthly income? And also people who really do not need it? I think these unnecessary payments should be stopped and kept only for those who really need it and also the elderly living in beautiful Spain. Henk Vrijdag, Formentera del Segura

Calpe makes a splash DERELICT BUILDINGS designed by the renowned and award-winning Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill are to be protected and restored as an international water sports centre in Calpe. by Keith Nicol The former social club – a restaurant, bar, and swimming pool - at La Cala Manzanera needed special permission from Central Government to be restored and converted because they fall under coastal laws. However, when Calpe’s Mayor Cesar Sanchez was in Madrid last week at the annual Fitur international tourism fair he took the opportunity to speak to the government minister in charge of the coasts – and won permission for the project. As reported last year, Calpe Town Hall has already obtained permission to protect and restore two apartment blocks designed by Bofill at La Manzanera Resort by having them listed as buildings of special interest. The La Cala Manzanera buildings by the sea are said to be in a dangerous condition – their redevelopment will not only preserve them but also provide employment. The new government project will soon be offered for tender is said to be the “ideal setting” for a sports centre while protecting a site of “cultural interest”. The day coincided with the ´Day of the Tree´ and the Mayor planted a symbolic sapling to commemorate the occasion. The path up to the lighthouse lies within the Sierra Helada Natural Park and attracts hundreds of visitors, especially at the weekend. There are a number of marked routes and viewpoints along the way up – the direct path is a distance of 2.5 km. Several information boards along the route give facts in Spanish and English about the fauna, flora and landscape. At the top is an information and exhibition centre – open Monday to Friday from 9:00am until 2:00pm and at the weekends from 10:00am until 1:30pm and a telescope, which is free for visitors to use. Please note that there are no refreshment facilities at the top, so remember to take your own water.

A Masterchef experience THE U3A Marina Alta’s Dining Out Group enjoyed a mouth watering meal created by Masterchef semi-finalist Dani Bowler. The group visited Dani’s Vintage Restaurant in Albir and as usual diners were encouraged to mix through the non-seating reservation policy – people wishing to sit together must arrive together. And the group’s next outing is to La Pantano Restaurant in Orxeta on Friday 20th February U3A Marina Baixa holds its general meetings on the fourth Monday of the month at the Casa de Cultura in Alfaz del Pi. Pipes, haggis and a ‘wee dram’ by Jack Troughton CELEBRATING BURNS Night was another annual success for 63 members and guests of the Royal Air Force Associations North Costa Blanca Branch – raising 340 euros for the Wings Appeal. Guest of honour at the ‘supper’ to mark Robbie Burns’ birth at the Los Leones Restaurant in Moraira was Air Marshall Sir ‘Dusty’ Miller, visiting the area as President of RAFA. Everyone was greeted with a swirl of pipes as they arrived at the restaurant – the piper also needed for the traditional role of piping in the haggis. During Bob Hunt’s welcoming speech, diners were told that RAFA’s Jean fisher celebrated her birthday on the same day as the Scottish poet – naturally a chorus of ‘Happy Birthday’ immediately followed! Bob was also called upon to ‘Address the Haggis” – in a broad Scots accent – before Colin McNae told the ‘immortal story’ of Burns’ life and achievements. Hugh Stewart proposed the toast

Walk for Cancer

by Irena Bodnarec THIS COMING Sunday, 8th February La Nucia will host its annual charity walk for cancer. The event has been organized by the Town Hall in conjunction with two cancer charities - AECC National Spanish Cancer Charity and Anémona. The 5km walk will start from the car park of the Camino Cano Sports centre at 10:30am and head to the CEM ecological centre in El Captivador – with much of the route now tarmacked. Last year over 600 people attended – including children, babies in pushchairs and a number of dogs. Volunteers will be selling raffle tickets for 3€ at both the start and finish points – with the draw taking place at 12 noon. Last year the event raised over 4,000€, which was divided between the two charities. A bus will be provided by the Town Hall to transport people back to the starting point to collect their cars, which is free of charge. However please note, no dogs are allowed onboard.

to the ‘ladies’ and the response to the ‘laddies’ was made by his wife Beverley. And while ‘national dress’ and kilts was sadly lacking amongst

people attending the function, RAFA said the staff of Los Leones entered the spirit of the occasion with their adaption of Scotland’s national dress.

By Irena Bodnarec A BRAND new Media Markt store will be opening before the start of the Summer, next to the La Marina shopping centre. The company specializes in consumer electronics, selling everything from televisions and white goods to computers and cameras – at present the nearest branch is in Alicante. This will be the 75th store that the German company will be opening in Spain – they already have numerous branches throughout Europe and Asia and are the second largest retailer of consumer electronics in the world, after the American retailer Best Buy. The 2,500 square metre store will employ 70 sales staff plus an addition 20 indirect jobs – with preference given to residents of Finestrat following an agreement which was made between the company and council during the planning application process. Over 1,500 applications have already been received and the council have offered the company premises to carry out interviews and train staff ahead of the store opening. Finestrat Town Hall are delighted that the company chose Finestrat to open its new store and part finance, along with the La Marina Shopping Centre a new access from the main road to ease traffic congestion.

by Jack Troughton FUND RAISING and public donations took the total for the Royal British Legion’s 2014 Poppy Appeal along the Costas to a new high – more than 188,324€. The amount was revealed at the annual conference of District North of The Royal British Legion in Spain in Alicante last Friday. The result of the annual collection was described as “fantastic” and “astonishing” and represents an increase of 15,000€ on the previous year. And a Legion spokesman added: “Many congratulations to all those who worked so hard to bring this about and especially to those who contributed so much to this great charity.” The money raised by the district is used to support former servicemen and women and their families in Spain, and the conference was told the welfare team continued to work hard. “During the past year we received a number of welfare inquiries and our busy welfare case workers once again volunteered to visit beneficiaries in the area.”

Some FAST advice EVERY SIX minutes a stroke occurs in Spain - the first cause of mortality in women and the second in men. Additionally, it is estimated that a third of the patients suffering from a stroke die through cause of it and that 40% suffer severe disabilities, resulting in an illness which affects more than 120.000€ people a year in Spain. At any moment a cerebral artery can block or break. If this happens,

we are confronting a real emergency and have to act quickly. Every moment that passes is a lost opportunity to recuperate. Effective treatments to reduce the consequences are: fibrinolytic treatment (breaks the clot which obstructs the artery); intra arterial rescue (applying the treatment

directly to the area of the obstruction); mechanical extraction of the clot; embolisation or clipping of cerebral aneurisms; vascular neurosurgery etc… In the HCB Stroke Centre, specialists in the early diagnosis and treatment of this pathology are available.

by Irena Bodnarec CRICKET IS a game that is gaining popularity here in Spain, as was evident last weekend at the Woodbridge Oval in Albir. Three youth teams – Sporting Alfaz in red, Torrevieja in all blue and La Manga Kings in mixed blue, took part in the 20/20 league. Back in 2013, the ICC Europe – International Cricket Council bought in a new initiative to encourage more youngsters to play the game and so street 20 was born. Spain was allocated funding from the ICC and Director of Spanish Cricket, Neil Brook organized events in different regions, after which the Valencia and Murcia regions started an indoor league, which last year was won by Sporting Alfaz. The teams are made

up of players aged between 9 and 18 years old and although predominantly boys, there is the odd girl too. The teams travel to each other’s grounds throughout the season – thanks to the support of parents and coaches. It is a terrific way to develop the youngsters both physically and mentally as well as building up team spirit and camaraderie. Next Sunday, 15th between 10am and 4pm they will be playing the Indoor League at the Pabellon / Indoor Sports Centre in Alfaz del Pi followed by an Open Day, with everyone welcome. Alfaz train under the guidance of coach Mark Perman, every Sunday morning at the Woodbridge Oval – just behind the Kaktus hotel on the beachfront. Jobs in the vegetable garden: February/March FROM NOW on the days become longer and there will be plenty to do in the vegetable garden. The following are some of the main tasks for the next two months. FEBRUARY Spring clean the greenhouse and garden frame. Turn over the compost heaps made last year. Sieve out what is nice and crumbly for preparing compost for seed trays and pots for large seeded varieties. Sow trays of lettuce, annual herbs, tomatoes, onion, peppers, courgettes, pumpkins and water melon seeds in the greenhouse. Plant onion and leek plantlets for summer harvesting and start to harvest over wintered onions. Spray early peas and broad beans with a Horsetail or Propolis solution to protect against mildew on pods. Plant potatoes if in a frost free location. If not plant in second half of March. Earth up potatoes as the first leaves appear and spray earth with horsetail solution to prevent fungi. If there is still a chance of frost cover the plants with fleece. Overhaul and improve the irrigation system. If not already done dig holes for planting melons, pumpkins and squashes and fill

with well-rotted manure/compost. Mark where the holes are with a cane. Give your comfrey plants a dressing of manure. MARCH Sow last Squash, Pumpkin, Tomato, Pepper and Aubergine seeds in the greenhouse or cold frame. Also plant Pumpkins and Squash directly in the ground under plastic cloches. Plant/sow out beneficial companion plants such as Roses, Borage, Marigolds and Nasturtiums. Start to harvest Asparagus, Peas, Mange Tout, Broad Beans, large Broccoli heads etc. while young and tasty. Plant some last bunches of Onion plantlets for summer harvesting and winter storage. Control weeds as the weather warms up. Put down a number of pieces of heavy black plastic, raised up by two bricks and kept damp underneath, as a good snail trap. Collect the produce twice a week and feed on Rosemary for three weeks before

cooking Asturian style, or squash. Give a liquid comfrey feed to all fruit vegetables currently growing on the plot. Tie in vigorously growing Sweet Peas and tall growing Peas. Give Artichokes a good soaking and feed with a liquid nettle, manure and Comfrey cocktail or a general ecological fertilizer. Keep the Asparagus bed weeded during the

main cropping period. Collect nettles and steep in water for a useful high nitrogen feed. For more ideas about what vegetables to grow and how to do so the books ‘Living Well from our Garden – Mediterranean Style’ and ‘ Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain’ are both available from Amazon Books, both ‘uk’ and ‘es’.

Abuses by banks in Spain

Free social network courses for COMPLEX INVESTMENTS, structured bonds, utocancelables, etc. entrepreneurs

by

Carlos Baos

from White & Baos Abogados Solicitors Lawyers

ABUSES BY the Spanish banks have been and continue to be scandalous. With the numerous court decisions that continue to be granted, one could almost believe that it is general practice committed by all Spanish banks, or almost all of them. The banks’ abuses include the sale of preference shares, interest swaps (SWAP / CLIP, etc.), mortgage floor rate clauses, as well as inadequate investments. In today’s article we want to talk briefly about those judgments condemning banks to repay investments made by their customers, due to inadequate advice and insufficient information given to the customer / consumer, by their bank. Most of the court rulings granted in favor of consumers are based on the breach of the bank’s duty to give adequate information to customers and consumers. This information is both vital and essential when considering the purchase of complex financial products

such as structured bonds, derivatives, and products of high technical complexity, these products also tend to carry a high risk. Many of the consulted court orders insist that Spanish Banks are negligent and fail to explain clearly, and prior to the signing of these contracts: the inherent risks, the commissions to be charged ( normally quite high), and how to recover the investment, etc. Therefore, the consent given by the consumer is considered “null”, that is to say, that although the client and consumer signs and voluntarily accepts the purchase of the fund, or the investment, that consent and agreement is flawed because the consumer does not have enough information to really know what they are contracting. It is well known that banks routinely violate their information obligations and the regulations governing advice to be given, and they often ask clients to sign contracts without giving them the time to

read them carefully. There are numerous court judgments against Spanish banks that can be easily found online, we highlight the judgments against Barclays Bank for the Royal Bank of Scotland Bonds, BBVA and Banco Santander, Structured Bonds BNP SAN POP and Caylon Bonds; the court decision against Banco Espiritu Santo (BES) in relation to bonds issued by Lehman Brothers as examples. We must not forget the special care and attention that banks should have when selling these complex products to a retail client, i.e. an individual consumer that is not an expert in complex investments. The customer’s individual risk profile, whether they have a high, medium or low risk profile, is also relevant in these cases. Therefore, if you or someone you know has a problem with your bank: an investment made through them, a mortgage floor clause, or preference shares, we can help. Contact Us.

Investing Money Safely

by

Keith Littlewood International Financial Adviser

HAVING A safe place to invest money is more and more becoming the most important factor when I am seeing clients at the moment. IF YOU are seeing unusually high rates being offered for investments quite often there is a catch or some level of risk required to achieve these returns. What is becoming the most important factor is the strength of a provider, often accepting a lower return than some investments offered in the press for that warm feeling of knowing capital is secure. With the recent strength of the Pound against the Euro also investing in Sterling seems to be what many customers are looking for. The Exchangerate at the moment is around 1.30 – choosing the correct currency is vital, a 0.1 change in the exchange rate equates to a 10% positive or negative return so please DO NOT overlook this when reviewing your investments. As previously mentioned in this space, the recently launched 65+ Guaranteed Bonds offered in the UK by the NSI are an ideal place to hold up to £20,000 of an individual’s money. They offer a 4% return over 3 years or 2.8% over 1 year (tax will be deducted at maturity) but most importantly the investment is 100% safe. The rate might seem low but in these times of low/negative inflation they actually offer investors a real rate of return. If you have money to invest then combining Pensioners Bonds with a tax efficient Spanish

Compliant Bond in a cautious managed fund can give a good rate of return while offering a secure home for your money and at the same time mixing and matching the currency to suit you. If you would like a brochure or more information on either the 65+ Pensioner Bond or just simply want a sit down and a face to face discussion about your

savings then do not hesitate to email or phone me, often just a reassuring review is all that is needed for some people. I am available to see you in your home or in our office . If you need advice or have any questions regarding the above you can contact me on 657 684 094 or email keith.littlewood@blacktowerfm.com

The bikers with Tony Grande (standing second from right)

By Jack Troughton BIG-HEARTED BIKERS hope a generous 3,363€ donation to a ‘Good Life’ charity project on the Costa Blanca will get it on the highway to success. The Costa Blanca Espana Harley Davidson Biker Group has given the balance of its 2014 fund raising to a self-sufficiency scheme in Relleu aimed at helping children and disabled

youngsters. Members of the group – and their powerful machines – turned up in Calpe where a cheque was handed to Tony Grande, the founder of Make A Smile. Tony said: “The Make A Smile team backed by local volunteers has worked hard over this last eighteen months to create a Self Sufficiency Project in Relleu which helps to

support underprivileged children and mentally challenged youngsters in care. “This important donation from the biker group will help us to continue that work in supporting the most vulnerable amongst us and in so doing give them the dignity to help themselves.” For further information about the charity’s work visit www.makeasmile.es or call 965 836 814.

showbiz goss US radio presenter Howard Stern is known for his ground breaking work, and the fearless ´on air´ statements he is prone to from time to time. Last week he targeted singer Sam Smith saying he was ´fat and ugly,´ before adding that he loves him´ for being the male Adele. Smith’s fans countered on Twitter with “Can’t believe what I’ve just read … Ignore!” Yep! … That´ll do it! Julia Louis-Dreyfus is one of the most celebrated actresses in Hollywood, having won five Emmys for her work on three different US television shows, and been nominated on 10 other occasions. When asked on the red carpet outside the Screen Actors Guild Awards last Sunday for advice to give up-andcoming young stars Julia said “Firstly, make your own work, and secondly … Sleep Around!”

Who’s a Pretty Girl Then? “ Quote of the Week PAMELA ANDERSON grew up in British Colombia Canada, and comes from extremely humble beginnings, her father having been a furnace man and her mother a waitress. She was nicknamed “Centennial Baby”, as she was the first born on July 1, 1967, the 100th anniversary of Canada’s official founding. Speaking to Parade magazine last week she said “I’ve just signed with Next Modelling agency and I find that funny as I’ve never felt pretty enough to be a model, I think I’ve provoked feelings with how I look, “yep! You sure have Pammie, “but not as a beauty,” she then added “but as a mischievous little rascal!,” odd thing for her to say, but ´mischievous little rascal´ it is then. When Pamela was 21 she had a boyfriend who was a photographer and they went with some friends to a Canadian Football League game during which a live video of her wearing a tightly-fitted Labatt’s Beer tshirt was shown on the stadium’s huge video screen. As part of a PR event for the brewery, she was then escorted down to field level to wide applause, a defining moment of her career, which swiftly led to the first of her 13 covers on Playboy magazine. She closed her interview with Parade in a more pensive mood saying about how she is ready to embrace being an older lady “I don’t really feel like I want to chase my youth, I want to experience all the seasons of my life … in this industry you’re surrounded by a lot of fear of getting older and fear of your looks leaving you, “ then seamlessly reverting back to when she said she wasn’t pretty enough added, “well … I’m lucky, cause I never really felt that great looking!” Pammie! … PAMMIE!! The fourth series on The Undateables began on Channel 4 last month and the ratings received quite some boost after the first wedding to spawn from the show took place last week in Las Vegas. Brent Zillwood and Challis Orme tied the knot, despite him calling her a s***head on their first date. They´ve both seemingly dealt with Brent’s bouts of uncontrollable swearing and Challis’s nervous tic … Cool!

Singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran on the background to his phenomenal success said “when I was young we didn’t own a video games console, one of the best things my mum never did!” … take heed young’uns!!

It truly is hells own job trying to avoid the goddam awful Kendall/Kardashians when trawling for worthy tales for the column. Last week it was time for these saddos to be seen at the Paris Fashion show and both Kendall and her mother Kris appeared in such sheer see-through outfits the paparazzi went popping crazy. Why the hell can’t they just ignore these headline junkies then they´ll have to go away?

Spending our inheritance “

My brother and I have recently left home. My parents are newly retired and have just announced that they want to sell the house, buy a motor home and travel the World. We think this is a ludicrous idea, and it will drain all their savings. Shouldn’t we have a say in how our inheritance is being spent?

I don’t want to go to college

I don’t want a normal job. My parents want me to go to college and train for something they say is a ‘worthwhile career’. I want to be a blogger or get a job on television so I can become a celebrity, but my parents say this is a waste of time.

There’s nothing wrong with ambition and aiming for a particular goal. Although the reality of a situation like this could be disappointing. Your parents have many years of working experience, and they will know how difficult it can be to follow dreams. The solution here is to try and have a fall-back in mind - something you can do while also pursuing ambitions. For example, are you able to set up as a Blogger and do this part time? Would you be able to go to Amateur Dramatics after work to get the acting experience you need for a career in television? All these things are possible but will also need funding. So in the meantime you need to get meaningful employment.

Lots of newly retired people pursue life changing ventures with great success. It is natural that you will have concerns for your parents, but the fact that you and your brother seem more interested in their savings dwindling makes you look very selfish. You have flown the nest and are now standing on your own two feet. Your parents want support from you. Remember they have lives of their own. They have spent many years working hard and doing their best for their children, and now have the opportunity to enjoy their retirement. health

When a cold becomes a chest infection AT THIS time of year common colds are at a peak and unfortunately some will turn into chest infections, some of which can be serious, or for some life threatening. The main types of chest infection are bronchitis and pneumonia. Most bronchitis cases are caused by viruses, whereas most pneumonia cases are due to bacteria. These types of infections are usually spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes. This propels tiny droplets of fluid containing the virus or bacteria into the air, where they can be breathed in by others. Infections can also be spread to others if you cough or sneeze onto your hand, an object or a surface, and someone else touches it before touching their mouth or nose. Some people are at a higher risk of chest infection including: Babies and very young children Elderly people People who smoke People who are very overweight Pregnant women People with long-term health conditions, such as asthma, heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, cystic fibrosis or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) People with a weakened immune system – this could be due to a recent illness, chemotherapy or a health condition, such as an undiagnosed HIV infection In addition to general symptoms of infection (headache, aches & pains, lethargy etc.) specific symptoms of a chest infection can include: A persistent cough Coughing up blood Wheezing A high temperature (fever) A rapid heartbeat Chest pain or tightness

Feeling confused and disorientated Coughing up yellow or green phlegm (thick mucus), Breathlessness or rapid and shallow breathing Many chest infections aren’t serious and get better within a few days or weeks and you may not need to see your GP. While you recover at home, you can improve your symptoms by: Getting plenty of rest Drinking lots of fluid to prevent dehydration and to thin the mucus in your lungs, making it easier to cough up Treating headaches, fever and aches and pains with painkillers such as Paracetamol or Ibuprofen Drinking a warm drink of honey and lemon to relieve a sore throat caused by persistent coughing Avoid cough medicines, as there’s little evidence they work, and coughing actually helps you clear the infection more quickly by getting rid of the phlegm from your lungs. You should see your GP if: You think a child under five has a chest infection You are 65 or over You have a long-term health condition You have a persistent fever You feel very unwell or your symptoms are severe You are pregnant Your symptoms last longer than two weeks You feel confused, disorientated or drowsy You have chest pain or difficulty breathing You cough up blood or blood-stained phlegm Your skin or lips develop a blue tinge (cyanosis) You are very overweight and have difficulty breathing You have a weakened immune system Your GP should be able to diagnose you based on your symptoms and clinical examination. Sometimes

further tests such as a chest X-ray, breathing tests and testing phlegm or blood samples may be necessary. VACCINATIONS If you are at an increased risk of chest infections, your GP may recommend being vaccinated against flu and pneumococcal infections. These vaccinations should help reduce your chances of getting chest infections in the future. Most chest infections get better on their own but some can be very serious. If in doubt see your Family Doctor.

Motivation

HAVE YOU ever decided on losing weight or stopping smoking or tried to set a goal but failed to stick to it? Successful people are usually the ones who have set goals for themselves and stuck to them! By Jonathan Gilchrist: Costa Blanca’s Top Hypnotherapist What stops most people from achieving goals in life is that they never get around to taking the first step at all! Using Fast Track Hypnosis helps greatly by motivating the client to keep on track to achieve their goals in life such as stopping smoking or losing weight. Others can come in many different forms, ranging from common ones, such as a career change, being better at sports, moving house. Over the years I have helped many of people to do just that - succeed! Fast Track Hypnosis helps the client to choose where they want to do in life, by knowing precisely what they want to achieve, then concentrating their efforts to do precisely that. CDs are also provided to reinforce the ongoing results as they progress and finally clients are taught self-hypnosis to give positive suggestions without the use of CD. “I had tried to quit smoking several times before and hadn’t been successful. I was worried that if I failed again that I would never

succeed in stopping smoking, so I decided to give Hypnosis a go. I wasn’t convinced that it would work but I haven’t had a cigarette since and that was almost three years ago. Since then I’ve entered fun runs, climbed mountains, and feel great long at last, running up stairs and not feeling out of breath…” “I’ve been absolutely thrilled with the results of the weight loss Fast Track Hypnosis as I’ve lost over 2½ Stone (18 Kilos) in the past two months and it has been utterly painless! I would recommend Jonathan’s methods to anyone and have done so to friends and family. It’s easy to comply with and seeing such good results has made me more confident and very happy! Thank you so much...” Jonathan holds weekly clinics in Cabo Roig, Quesada, Benidorm and Calpe. For a free-of-charge consultation, an appointment, a brochure or if you have any questions regarding Jonathan and his Fast Track Hypnosis then call on 691 784 954, email jonathangilchristbh@gmail.com or visit jonathangilchristinspain.com

Tuesday 10th February is the last of the fortnightly sessions at Monroe’s Carvery, Pedreguer, starting time 8pm. The band will then perform on the 1st Tuesday in each month, from Tuesday 3rd March. Password recovery DEAR AUNTY: My husband has an Acer Aspire - Windows 7. A few months back a friend told him that a password wasn’t necessary to get into his computer so he deleted it. In the meantime, as we were moving house, the computer went into storage. Now, when he tried tries to get into it, a password is required. He has tried his old password and various others but - nothing. Our grandson in England told him to try hitting F8 which didn’t work either. Please help. Lena Aunty says: If you have access to an ‘administrator account’ in windows safe mode then you can change user passwords. Step 1: Start or restart your Windows 7 computer. Step 2: Press F8 to enter Advanced Boot Options before the Windows 7 loading screen appears. Step 3: Choose Safe Mode with Command Prompt in the coming screen, and then press Enter. Step 4: Wait for Windows 7 files to load until Windows login screen comes up. Step 5: Log in Windows with an administrator account until you see login screen. Step 6: A Command Prompt appears. Type net user in the Command Prompt and then hit Enter. All Windows user accounts will be listed for you. Step 7: Type “net user username 12345” and hit Enter. Note: “username” is your locked Windows user

account name. And “12345” means the new password you want to reset for the locked account. User account “username” will be reset with new password “12345”. Step 8: The new password has been successfully reset for user when the command is completed successfully. Step 9: Exit and reboot the PC and Login Windows 7 PC with the new password.

WinPatrol

HI AUNTY: Just a quick tip on stopping Adobe Speed Launcher (and other programs) from starting with Windows. An excellent program called WinPatrol (free edition) is able to display (and give you the option to disable) all programs that start with Windows, screen shot below. It also monitors what is going on and alerts you to programs trying to change settings, home pages etc, giving you the option to allow or reject the change. Jonathan Aunty says: Many thanks for that. It looks like it is simply an ‘easier on the eye’ version of what you can get from Microsoft by type in “msconfig” into you run bar, options to change start up programs. But with the obvious warnings of playing around with your PCs registry can also cause problems.

Keyboard settings AUNTY! MAY I ask you one other question? Why do I have to hit the ‘@’ sign in order to show inverted commas and the same in reverse, when I need to use the ‘@’ sign? This has been going on for some time. It wasn’t always like it. Thanks for all the help....Tom. Aunty says: Sounds like you have your keyboard settings on the PC different to the keyboard layout. For example, if you have a Spanish keyboard and Windows set to UK “input” then some functions will not correspond. You can change these settings in the control panel.

Master of black and white

MAGICAL PIANIST Haochen Zhang is set to delight Costa Blanca audiences next month with a triumphant return after his sell out success 12 months ago.

By Jack Troughton Tickets are selling fast for the 24-year-old’s shows in Teulada and Alicante, while a more intimate setting is promised at a special charity performance in Javea. Haochen Zhang gave his debut recital in Shanghai at the age of five and has since been heralded as one of this century’s great pianists and the ‘Chinese Virtuosi’...and a ‘simply amazing’ musician. As long ago as 2009, he became the youngest and first Chinese competitor to win the coveted Nancy Lee and Perry R Bass Gold Medal at the 13th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. He has played with the China National Symphony Orchestra, the Krakow State Philharmonic, the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra – and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. And his impressive CV and his rocket to fame have made him one of the busiest classical musicians in the world and much in demand around the globe. It is a major coup for Concerts Costa Blanca they have once again secured his services in Spain.

The short tour begins on 12th March in Majorca and continues on 13th March at the Auditorio de Teulada and March 14th at the Auditorio de Diputacion de Alicante. The special Javea performance – as reported in RTN last week - is on 15th march in aid of Todos Juntos Javea, contact Jean Halse for tickets on 96 647 0833. As Venus trysts with Pluto there is much more than meets the eye, and you are under the impression that the support garnered around you has your interests at heart. Think again, please, on that one! It is a buoyant and busy Venus that seems to have her fingers in a lot of pies right now. This week there comes a head on sextile with a challenged Pluto and too, a midweek dalliance with an ebullient Jupiter. All this serves to show that you are perfectly capable of taking something new on board. Busy as you are there is a little adventure ahead that will work to your bidding like a dream. The insecurity of not knowing your immediate plans merely allows you to drift through a week that will leave you clearly with far better options for all concerned. There will be respite and resolve, but until you are operating with all cylinders blazing there is no future and compromise never ever was your forte. Others seem to have had there say but they don’t know what you do! Antagonised by interfering elements of Pluto and teased by a controlling Uranus biding time with a take on of Ceres, this is a great time to have your say and to get some long awaited positive communication going. You have taken very natural control of a family situation which begs to go pear shaped, but above all, nothing will work if others decide not to take on a fair share! With the Sun resplendent in Pisces there is a dreamy and romantic side to you which begs to take the upper hand. Forget routine and commitment, and just live a little for a change. It is high time that you showed what you are capable of instead of the predictable and static same old, same old. Change will hit you hard and yet it is someone who knocks you off your feet this week!! A lack of decision has confused you somewhat. You need some respite and some time to mull things over, and a well deserved break would be the very best all round. Above all there is no going back know, but you have to focus on yourself for a change. This is not selfish, it is high time you realised that you deserve so very much more in the current scheme of things. Cavorting Venus brings you to break the mould and let your hair down in this very special week. As the Sun favours Pisces and there is a time for everything you now need to achieve, there is no such thing as time..just a feeling that you are entering into something that stirs your innermost emotion, and which bodes well in absolutely everything that you need to connect with right now. As Ceres calls time on planet of invention, mighty Uranus, there may be some changes to the routine this week,. Expect delays and rescheduling to boot, as the synchronicity of fate guides you to new beginnings and sees you experiencing the unexpected. The ongoing effect will not only put a spring in your step but will show you some alternatives that you really might never have considered. Jupiter takes on Venus mid week, and love is most certainly in the air. This is a time to reward those who love you, in your unique and generous way, as entertaining brings those who have your true interests at heart, all together. Taking over as host, planning exactly what you want is natural to you, so celebrate in style knowing that you can spread a little happiness all around you. Let bygones be bygones and forget the recent past, especially as it has brought back sad memories all around. There are some things that will never change, but what has happened is that others are understanding your motives and rallying around to do just whatever they can. Time is the strongest of healers and for you, right now, life goes on just as it must whatever comes along. Governed by Uranus there comes a strong connection with Ceres who governs new beginnings and regulates time and time control. You are waiting for something to happen right now; but with the current energies around you it is high time that you realised that it may just well be time for you to bring on those wishes and dreams and to make them well and truly happen. Making hay when the sun shines is just the right slogan for you to aspire to right now. You are about to assume control in your life, and though time is of a premium to you it is time to relax your rules and do your very best work. You have had disappointment and it has made you stronger than ever and more than ready for all that must now surely come along for you, every which way.

JUST SOMETIMES something carries me way back when, and I relive my life as it were yesterday. I guess that I am lucky to have had such an interesting life and that I have the recall to allow my memory to remember. Going back isn’t always in sadness and it certainly isn’t always in joy, but also there are many triggers that help me on the way and every trip along memory lane is for a reason, I guess; as it is often unknown. I must admit to opening a photo album recently and, of course, couldn’t put it down. Such an album was such a jog to my memory and I was lost for some time in reminiscence as I named friends from the past, saw an old car I once owned and saw an apartment where my adopted father once lived. Time stands still and the memory floods with just what was going on then, and it’s infective. Mainly I went back to a time when I wasn’t so decisive or so determined as I am now. That has come with age. I couldn’t help but to wonder though what future I was predicting for myself or where exactly on the pathway of life I was on. What made me laugh? Who was close to me? Who were they who loved me at the time? What was I thinking? To have the recall was such a wonderful thing. Though this connection with the past was an instant kick, I knew it was a brief sojourn on this my journey of life, and I began to think what was coming next and what could be out there in store for me for the future. I have met very sad people who have decided to live in the past. This has to include a very dear friend who still lives in London but who wanted to recreate the wonderful Saturday

Kenny‛s Postbag

nights we enjoyed together as a small group of friends that we were. Though everyone has moved on, the dreadful situation that reunion brings would have brought together five aging, sagging men, not the hybrid leather clad disco bunnies we were. I prefer to remember our craziness and the sheer fun we had, laughing always at everything, even if it wasn’t funny; than to be made to recreate a situation for the sake of it. Often when I hear the music of the past I am that crazy kid on the dance floor though. I was invited to a school reunion, and horror of horrors was beguiled with emails from the names of the past; who wrongly thought that telling me tales of my exploits of getting down and dirty on the rugby field would induce me to jump on a plane and spend an evening together with them. We have all moved on by now, with some of us ( not me!) actually thinking of retirement and all the endless gardening we can muster, when really what we had back then is best staying back there where it truly does belong. The past belongs where it was, and we can have easy access to it but it isn’t for now. Sadly I have met people who really do live in the past with no adjustment for the present we inhabit or the future to aspire them to. Ghosts of the past can haunt me, but I am not that kind of guy. I live for today, and for the wonderful life I live with Spirit by my side. The present is the gift, yesterday the history and tomorrow starts the mystery that is the rest of our lives. When I first came to Spain a patronising neighbour in a cravat and blazer asked me, “What did you do?” I was taken aback by this because I was too busy living my life in the now. I guess you know that I will never retire, ever, not whilst I have work to do and Spirit to see me through. I will take a sneaky peak at that photo album from time to time though.....was that really me?

KENNY, I was at a show of yours, and you told me that I had a maiden aunt, you mentioned that she did not marry the man she loved. I have checked with my gran, and this was her sister, Gwen who died before I was born. I am sorry that I didn’t know....but you sure did! Brian J. Thank you for confirming this. I remember that I felt very strongly that Gwen was jilted and never found another man to love her. A sad tale but a real one. Some times it takes a time to get the feedback that confirms a message from Spirit, and I do make mistakes sometimes! In Gwen’s case she wanted her story told to you, her nephew....so we did it!

Rascals support SAT A PRESENTATION of 120€ was made to S.A.T. animal charity by the performance group The Rascals in January. Rascals spend much of their time raising money and working in the local community for various charities and three Rascals work at the S.A.T. shop. You can see some of the group this weekend as a few members of the group will be having fun taking part in Torrevieja’s afternoon Carnival on Sunday 8th February. The parade starts at about 4.30pm. Another date to put in your diary is either Thursday 23rd or Friday 24th April when they will be performing their next variety show: ‘Both sides of the Pond’ at Los Montesinos. A further performance will take part in Torrevieja in May with the date to be confirmed. Rascals are essentially a group of like minded people who enjoy raising money for local charity, by rehearsing and performing musical variety shows in Los Montesinos, Torrevieja and other local theatres. Rascals were formed in 1993 and during the past dozen years they have raised almost 150,000€ for well deserving charities such as Age Concern, Alzheimer’s and Caritas to name just a few. Apart from performing in shows Rascals members care for each other in good times and bad, They also enjoy working in the local community helping people who need us and enjoy social evenings such as Quiz Nights, Beetle Drives and days out. If you would like to know more about The Rascals or indeed to join this talented group, then they would love to hear from you. Choir’s 10th Costa tour By Jack Troughton CHAMBER CHOIR Cantores Sanctis Diebus return to the Costa Blanca for the tenth time this month for three concerts. Based in the historic English city of Salisbury, the choir specialises in music of the Renaissance and will perform at three venues in the north of the region next weekend. The choir and director Nicholas Hale is also pleased to welcome back Charlotte Ashley as soprano soloist for the performances in the Marina Alta. On Valentine’s Day, Saturday 14th February, at 7.30pm at the Alcalali church, the choir performs in collaboration with Music Unlimited and its director Joanna Baldwin. The evening is in two parts, first singing the moving and haunting Requiem by John Rutter, with charlotte as soloist, and in part two, the choirs separately and together will sing a variety of music from the 16th Century to the 20th Century – both sacred and secular. Admission is free but a retiring collection will help support the upkeep of the church. And on Sunday 15th February at 9.45am, Cantores Sanctis Diebus will sing at the Ermita del Popul – on the road between Javea and Jesus Pobre – a Eucharist for the Anglican Chaplaincy.

The chamber choir with Charlotte Ashley (centre front)

Music is Byrd’s Mass for Five Voices. The choir will sing again at 8pm on Sunday evening in the Church of Nuestra Senora de Loreto – popularly known as the Fishermen’s Church – in Javea Port. Again entry is free and a retiring collection will be made in aid of Caritas. The concert will feature sacred music

written by both English and Spanish composers of the 16th and 17th Centuries, and will include Tallis’ ‘O Nata Lux’; Byrd’s ‘Ave Verum, Mass for five voices’; and Victoria’s ‘Ave Maria. For further details contact Director Nicholas Hale on 689 549 266 or email njhale@plenumorganum.org.uk

Jávea Craft Market: better luck this Saturday? DUE TO the rain and wind that lashed the town last Saturday, the weekly craft fair in Jávea had to be cancelled. Let’s hope that this week the weather will be better! A dozen or so craft people are expected to come and sell their hand made goods in wood, ceramics, metal, leather, cloth, wool and resin on Saturday 7th February. Toni will come back to show us how the traditional turrón (soft nougat) is made with ingredients that are as simple as they are natural: almonds, sugar, cinnamon and lemon zest. And Kika with her tiny puppet theatre, who was going to come last Saturday, will tell her Historias de la Abuela Ciruela y la Ardilla Pilla this week for children of all ages. The fair on the Saturday after that coincides with Valentine’s Day - what better present for that special person than something made with skill and loving care by one of these talented crafts people? As Carnival starts that same weekend, one of the artesans will probably spend the whole morning painting children’s faces for the occasion, asking only a small contribution to cover costs. The fair can be found every Saturday (weather permitting!) from 10am till 2pm on the square in front of the Post Office (Plaza Marina Alta), at the edge of the beautiful old town centre and with lots of parking space nearby. For more information call 639 979 678 (English spoken); you can find a list of participants at www. amata.es/Javeasemanal.html and photographs of the stalls and shows at www.amata.es/JaveaSat15.html.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

More or e – i rootchanging verbs WE FINISHED off last week’s article on our third category of root-changing verbs, namely “E to I”. This root change only occurs in the “-ir” group of verbs, and as we said, some of the most common ones are: decir (to say, to tell), pedir (to ask for, to order), medir (to measure), seguir (to follow, to continue), repetir (to repeat). We looked at the example PEDIR (or ask for, to request, to order) and that is where we will start off from today, as it is a nice clear one to understand: pido pedimos pides pedís pide piden As you can see, there are certain constants here which apply to all root-changing verbs. The first is, of course, that the endings are the same as for all “-ir” verbs. The second is that the root changes, in this case E to I, occur in the first, second and third persons singular and the third person plural. (pido, pides, pide, piden). The first and second persons plural revert to the same root as the infinitive of the verb (pedimos, pedís). Finally, the beat or emphasis in each case falls on the changed roots where they occur, and on the endings –imos and –ís where the root change doesn’t occur. All of that is identical in principle to all other rootchanging verbs. The part that perhaps makes these E to I verbs appear more confusing is that there is an inverse relationship between what is happening to the root and what is happening to the endings, since the –ir verb endings

involve the letter E except in first and second persons plural where they involve the letter I, giving us “pides” (you order – singular you) “pedís” (you order – plural you). Now, quite a few articles ago I mentioned the fact that there are some verbs in all of these categories and groups, both standard and root-changing, which “do their own thing” in the first person singular. We looked at one or two examples like HACER (to do) HAGO (I do) and SALIR (to go out) SALGO (I go out). Another very familiar example is TENER. This is an E to IE root-changing verb, but the first person singular is TENGO, which of course we all know means “I have”. The point was made quite clearly that just because there is a variation in the first person singular, this does not mean that the verb can be counted as “irregular”, as they follow regular patterns in all other changes. Now, this same “one-off” sort of variation occurs with some or our “I to E” root changing verbs. By far the most common is the verb DECIR (to say, to tell). We hear this used constantly, so it’s one we need to understand properly. This is how it goes: digo decimos dices decís dice dicen As you can see, we are looking at a straightforward E to I root-changing –ir verb, with a variant first person singular. And to be perfectly frank, if you managed to read and understand that last statement without batting an eyelid, take it from me, you’re getting somewhere! See you next week.

Music of the Night a big hit THE ‘MUSIC of the Night’ concerts produced and directed by Nigel Hopkins at the Orihuela Costa Resort at La Zenia last Saturday hit new heights in entertainment on the Costa. The shows featured the Costa’s leading choir, Melody Makers International, along with Cantemos! Youth. Special guests were Karisma, the girls’ harmony group consisting of Janelle Gaskell, Elise MacGregor, Holly Neeson and Gemma Gamble Garcia. The show was opened with the impressive Melody Makers singing Anthem from Chess and Jesus Christ Superstar., followed by a fully staged and costumed performance of a medley from Annie by the talented youngsters of Cantemos! Youth. Karisma showed the more than 1,100 people present what all the fuss had been about, with wonderful harmonies drawing enthusiastic applause. The four adult soloists were excellent with honours going to Alyson Horsfall with a 60-strong chorus in a special arrangement of Climb Every Mountain from Sound of Music, and Eric Berg in a flawless rendition of If I Were A Rich Man. The most enthusiastic applause, however, went to a surprise performance of Music of the Night from Phantom of the Opera given in cloak and mask by professional UK tenor Matthew Hopkins - son of conductor Nigel Hopkins. Matthew, Director of Music at Nottingham Trent University, also led the professional band on the keyboards as well as writing the band parts for the entire performance. The concerts supported two local charities, with Samaritans in Spain raising 600€, whilst Help At Home raised 750€, the extra by virtue of the donations given to them by Nigel Hopkins for the sale of his CD album of popular songs.

Focus on Golf Powered by Campbell Lamont Golf, partnered by BayRadio

The aroma of haggis is fading from our memories BUT - THE Visauto Scottish Texas Scramble was an incredible event.

By Tony Myles WITH KILTS, tartan and Rabbie Burns - beloved by Scottish golfers of all nationalities, every year towards the end of January there are hundreds of English, Welsh, Irish and even Belgium, German, Swedish and Spanish people who suddenly become very Scottish. And the motivation behind this phenomenon is the celebration of the Burns Day Golf competition and Burns Supper at The La Sella Golf Resort and whilst it looks like the Gathering of the Clans, the combatants have forsaken the claymore and caber in favour of the Taylormade driver and Srixon balls. This year was once again exceptional, as the course was festooned with tartan, further enhanced by the kilts and trews worn by the hordes of golfers. There was also the ubiquitous “see-you-Jimmy” wig and many a knobbly knee braving the early morning breeze. The Golf event was launched by Alan Bleasdale, a highland piper in full regalia. The competition was heavily oversubscribed but Campbell’s team did their best to accommodate as many players as possible. Five hours later the competitors made their way to the Marriott ballroom, where to the tune of Scotland the Brave, the haggis was paraded and addressed in true Burns manner by Stevie Paton. Following the dinner Campbell Lamont thanked all the sponsors for their support and regretted that no one was able to claim the new Mercedes Smart car offered by Visauto of Denia for a Hole-in-One. But everyone appreciated the extra balls supplied by Visauto as evidenced by the generous donations that raised over €400 for Grant-A-Wish. Then with toasts with the Macallan whisky and the Vicente Gandia wine that was on every dining table, all the winners were greeted with warm applause, as the scores were worthy of such a great day. STRENGTH TO STRENGTH It is truly phenomenal that the life and times of a poet who died more than two hundred years ago should be feted in such a manner and it is clearly evident that it continues to grow in popularity and affection, as Campbell has already been asked to take reservations for next year. There were scores of photographers in attendance and a selection of these has been placed on the company web site and FaceBook page so for more pictures of the golf event and the subsequent Burns Supper click on www.clgolf. es and look for Campbell Lamont Golf on Facebook. SO WHAT NEXT? There are a number of additional activities that remain in a packed golfing diary. It is true to say that with St Valentine’s Day in February a young person’s fancy turns to . . well you know what! So February presents an ideal opportunity to gain some extra kudos with your loved one. There are some great deals around and in the La Sella Golf Resort you can combine golf, spa and fine dining and with overnight accommodation it looks like a winning formula. Many golfers enjoy the opportunity of playing a variety of courses and Campbell enables this in a manner which encourages golfers of all abilities, with his Monthly Competitions. Over the next few months these competitions will be visiting La Sella, El Bosque, Alenda and El Saler. Full details are available on the web site www.clgolf.es then select Competitions.

Torrevieja Swimming Club THIS WEEKEND Club Natacion Torrevieja Masters competed in the 2nd Masters Timed Control in the Community of Alicante. The competition brought together 153 masters from 22 clubs across the region at the 50m pool in Elche. Each Master was allowed two individual races plus a relay. Torrevieja’s 6-person team started the day well with Adam Stewart’s 400m Freestyle, a good race by Adam, but not a personal best. Adam went on to race the 1500m freestyle whilst his sister Lucy swam the 50m Breaststroke event. In the 65-69 years category, Paul Matthews was pleased with his 50m Backstroke and 100m Freestyle races, placed first in his category, after suffering neck injuries over the last few months. Rafael Bordes Alonso, unable to compete in the 40m Freestyle, had a good swim in the 50m Breaststroke and then went onto race in the 4 x 50m medley relay. The final two women in the team had excellent swims, Beth Altabas setting new personal bests in her 200m Freestyle and 1500 m Freestyle events. In the 70-74yrs category Beth beat her European Championships times with a swim of 3:27;42 in the 20m and 28;17;75 in the 1500m Freestyle. Registering your vehicle in Spain. Spanish license plates and registration document. Registering a non-Spanish vehicle in Spain is a complex and potentially costly procedure. However, you may be exempt from Spanish registration tax by getting Spanish number plates within one month of entering the country. But to do this, you need to become a resident. Linea Directa has been insuring expat drivers in Spain for over a decade and understands all the steps involved. Below we outline this process. STEP 1: OBTAINING A CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMITY This is a statement by the car’s manufacturer that it conforms to EU regulations. You will need the car’s chassis number to complete this straightforward process online at www.eurococ.eu/en/ certificate_of_conformity. The charges for this service will vary according to type of vehicle, make and country of 1st registration. STEP 2: CURRENT LOG BOOK The vehicle’s original log book showing your name as the owner, the vehicles age and a valid UK address. You will also need the bill of sale for the car. STEP 3: RESIDENCY IN SPAIN The Spanish residency certificate (Certificado de Empadronamiento) is your

official proof of residency in Spain. Your local town hall can provide you with this document. You will need to take your passport and proof of Spanish address (rental contract, contract to purchase or property deeds). STEP 4: OBTAINING A SPANISH MOT CERTIFICATE All vehicles over 4 years old must be roadworthy and clearly display a valid ITV sticker. The ITV (Vehicle Technical Inspection) must be tested at an authorised centre, just as for an MOT test. You can find out the location of your nearest ITV centre on DGT website (equivalent to the DVLA). You can also call your local centre to make a booking. If the centre is busy, especially pre-summer, this can save a lot of time. The cost can vary but generally is around 40€ for petrol-engine cars and 56€ for diesel-engine cars. STEP 5: OBTAINING A SPANISH EQUIVALENT OF A TAX DISC The Spanish Tax Agency can provide your vehicle with a valid “tax disc” for Spain, which must be carried in the car when in use. You will need to complete the relevant form online and pay the amount according to your car’s tax band. You can carry out all these procedures
