A word from the Ed

THE FRONT page is once again adorned with a black band to mark the deadly terrorist attacks in Brussels; another attempt by extremists to topple Western freedoms in the name of distorted beliefs and hardline religion. A sombre mood at RTN Towers as the team put this week’s issue together. The language was at times colourful describing yet another atrocity; the mood defiant. We too are Brussels. Sadly, terrorism striking at the heart of Europe’s capital cities has increased. It is only four months since November’s Paris attacks and just over two years since the murders involving the French satirical magazine ‘Charlie Hebdo’. London and Madrid also know the sour taste of jihadism. Airports, railways stations, concert halls, even restaurants, anywhere people gather will always be soft targets. Unfortunately, no available security can completely eliminate the threat caused by those plotting to harm innocent. We must all be vigilant at home and abroad. Easter is already upon us, time really does fly. Speaking of time, the clocks spring forward early on Sunday morning; remember to advance the big hand by sixty minutes, the little hand usually follows.

Fallas burn in Benidorm by CAROLINE TYSZKA

HUNDREDS OF people gathered in Benidorm at the weekend to see the burning of the Fallas, a traditional festival welcoming in the spring. On Saturday evening, the festival concluded with a fire parade, called the cabalgata de fuego, where everyone dressed in colourful costumes, danced to the many bands and watched the burning of the creations. Although the three fallas were eventually burnt, problems with lighting them meant that the last one in the Plaza Triangular was later than scheduled. Earlier in the ceremonies, at the fallas located in the old town area, two young girls were injured, as hot embers from the fire landed on the spectators and their costumes began to burn. Luckily, the Red Cross and firemen were on hand to extinguish the dresses, and the girls were taken to a waiting ambulance.

Council locks horns by JACK TROUGHTON

LOCAL POLITICIANS on the Costa Blanca have again banned the controversial practice of running bulls with lit candles attached to their horns. Known as ‘bous embalados’, Calpe Town Hall has joined a growing number of local authorities along the coast to outlaw the tradition during town fiestas. Matters came to a head as councillors discussed the grants it was awarding for the coming year ahead of fixing a budget and the money to be given to the bull running association was highlighted. Councillor Carole Saunders said a year ago she voted against her conscience regarding

‘bous embalados’ and the “terrible” spectacle of bulls with candles burning on the tips of their horns. “I said other towns were banning this and I was against it,” she told RTN. “And my colleagues said they were also against it and usually left before it started. “The mayor said we were free to vote how we wished and I am very pleased to say we have banned it – I thought we should set an example and they agreed. “Unfortunately many foreign visitors go to watch this; it’s sometimes called ‘cows with candles’. The next step is to stop bull fighting where the bull is killed.”

VILLAJOYOSA PRESERVES HERITAGE By Caroline Tyszka VILLAJOYOSA HAS launched a municipal register to ensure that sites and buildings are restored and maintained. The town council in Villajoyosa wants to have an official record of any properties, particularly those with cultural heritage, that require maintenance or restoration because of health and safety issues, or to retain their historic or cultural values. Andreu Verdu, mayor for the town, said “having this official compliance list will allow us to better control the state of some properties, and will assist us in getting the owners to act when they are not meeting the required rules and planning permissions.”

Pet education for kids

by CAROLINE TYSZKA

PUPILS, FROM the Polop San Roque School, have visited a local kennels and cattery, to learn about caring for animals. Fifty five children from a local school visited Shieldaig Kennels and Cattery last week in Finestrat, as part of their English lesson and also to learn about animals. The kennels, which have boarding dogs and cats, also look after the Doggie Angels` dogs that need to be re-homed, so it was an ideal opportunity for the children to see how caring for animals can be a rewarding experience. Sasha Kingham, who spends a lot of time helping her parents, who own Shieldaig, said: “The children all had to practice their English and had written questionnaires to bring with them.” One homeless dog, that had just been found, received the full attention of the children, with them voting on what to call the new arrival. The winner was Victoria who called him Tommy. Sasha went on to say: “The kids all loved the dogs. They showed such kindness and compassion to all the animals, so I think Spain’s future generation will be full of dog lovers.” Shieldaig is a family run business, and is a fully licenced kennels and cattery, working closely with local animal charities. For further information, email them at info@shieldaigkennels.com or see their website www.shieldaigkennels.com.

A BILINGUAL Club in El Campello is helping different nationalities to integrate with each other in the community. The association, whose motto is “living a language to learn”, meets every Thursday evening at the café in the central park area of El Campello on the corner of Calle Joan Bautista Basset and Ramos at 7.45pm. The Spanish and English group is a non-profit organisation, where people can go to share conversations and perfect their new language skills. The president of the association, José Javaloyes González, said : “No matter what the level of the conversation is, communicating helps with learning and integration.” The group also holds events and, last week, celebrated St Patrick’s Day. They also recently visited the wine cellars of Enrique Mendoza in Alfaz del Pi. For further information the association has full details on their website: www.bilinguecampello.weebly.com.

Internet pornography arrests by CAROLINE TYSZKA

GUARIDA CIVIL officers have made eight arrests of people said to be involved in child internet pornography. The joint operation between the UK, EUROPOL and Spainish police, called “TOR SPAIN”, unravelled files that were hidden in a TOR network - where layers of encryption make it difficult to source an original site. The files, that members of the paedophile group shared, contained images that have been classified as “extremely harsh.” The specialist team traced some of the users to the provinces of Madrid, Valencia, Murcia and Gijón, where the suepcts were subsequently arrested for “crimes of corruption of minors.” During searches, officers seized 8 computers, 20 external hard drives, and several optical media items. The investigation will remain open. It is hoped victims featured in the paedophilic material can be identified.

Rolf Harris pleads not guilty

By Caroline Tyszka ROLF HARRIS appeared in court via a video link and pleaded not guilty to seven charges of indecent assault. The 85 year old entertainer was in his prison cell at HMP Stafford, which was broadcast live to Westminster Magistrates’ Court. And in response to the latest charges, his family issued a statement: “We are extremely disappointed and saddened that the CPS have decided to take Rolf, who will be 86 at the end of this month, through another trial. We continue to support and assist him in proving his innocence.” Mr Harris will appear at Southwark Crown Court in London on 14th April. Rolf was jailed last year on twelve counts of sex charges, and sentenced to five years and nine months. He was also stripped of his CBE by the Queen, following the conviction.

Airport action by Ian Askew

SPAIN’S SUPREME Court has authorized the Autonomous Community to seize Corvera Airport, authorising police to assist. The court has warned the concessionaire,

SACYR, that it will begin proceedings for non-delivery disobedience if it does not deliver Corvera Airport to the Autonomous Community without delay. The judges, María Consuelo Uris, Indalecio Cassinello and José María Pérez-Crespo, is-

sued the judgement - noting the potential need for “the relief of forces and state security bodies, if necessary.” Now, it seems that the Ministry of Public Works will be effectively taking over Corvera’s facilities.

Two Spanish men have been detained by police, following complaints, from a member of the public, that dogs were being locked up on a farm in a rural area of Villajoyosa. When officers attended the scene, they found that the property was padlocked and inside there were two badly maintained rooms which held several dogs. In total there were 4 greyhounds, including a female with 11 puppies, who had no food or water and were surrounded by excrement and rubbish. Officers alerted the local vet and animal shelter, who took the animals away, where, unfortunately, within a few hours, three of the new-born puppies died. The two Spanish men associated with the property, aged between 33 and 44, were traced, arrested and seen by a judge at the Villajoyosa courthouse.

Europe on high alert by Jack Troughton and Caroline Tyszka

COUNTRIES ACROSS Europe have ramped up security in the wake of Tuesday’s terrorist bombings in Brussels which killed 34 people and injured more than 250. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the carnage and promised more attacks saying there would be further “dark days” for countries allied against the Jihadists. Bombs exploded at the departures area of Zaventem Airport, an important international hub, and the Maalbeek Metro station, in the centre of the Belgium capital near the European Commission. Security was immediately stepped up in Britain, Spain, France and Germany in the aftermath of the atrocities – London, Madrid, and Paris, have all suffered terrorist attacks in recent years – and people were warned to be “alert and vigilant”. In the UK and Spain security forces took up a highly-visible presence at airports, ports, and railway stations; so-called ‘soft targets’. Both countries were at their second-highest level of alert, marking an attack was highly likely rather than as a response to any particular threat. Belgium started three days of official mourning following the attack and the Place de la Bourse in the business centre of Brussels was just one place people gathered to pay tribute to the victims. And as Adele sang at London’s O2 Arena, she introduced ‘Make You Feel My Love’ and asked the audience to join in, saying “this is for Brussels”. People lit up the stadium as they held mobile phone lights aloft in solidarity. The country’s police have also launched a manhunt for a man named as Najim Lacchraoui, a 24-year-old believed to be the third man caught on CCTV at the airport, and identified by French police as the chief bomb maker for last year’s Paris attacks. BROTHERS And two brothers, Khalid and Brahim el-Bakraoui, were both named as being involved in the attacks. Airport security pictures showed three men pushing luggage trolleys through the airport. It was said the black gloves worn by two of the men on their left hands hid detonators for the bombs. A taxi driver also took police to an address in the Brussels of Schaerbeek saying he had picked up three ‘suspicious’ men to take to the airport. Inside the property was found a nail bomb, chemicals, and an IS flag. The attacks took place four days after the arrest of Salah Abdeslam, who plotted the November attacks in Paris. Condemning the bombings, David Cameron warned of a “very real terror threat” across Europe, and headed two Cobra meetings on Tuesday immediately following the outrage and on Wednesday morning to discuss the UK’s response. The Prime Minister said Britain sent its sympathies and condolences to the Belgium people. “These are appalling and savage terrorist attacks. They could just as well be attacks in Britain or in France or Germany, or elsewhere in Europe and we need to stand together against these appalling terrorists and make sure they can never win.” He it was “inappropriate” to link the terror attacks to Europe’s open borders, but he said extremists “packed their explosives with nails in order to kill as many men, women, and children, as they could.” Belgium Prime Minister Charles Michel condemned the attacks as “blind, violent, and cowardly” saying terrorists had killed people going about their daily lives. BROKEN The politician, who later lit a candle at the vigil at Place de la Bourse, said: “The lives of people who were most likely travelling without a care in the world, going to work or school, lives that have been broken by extremism.” Belgium is seen as a hotbed of jihadism and Spain is another significant centre of Islamist activity. Around 45% of those arrested since 1013 had Spanish nationalist and 12 months

Destruction ago all parties signed an anti-terrorist pact aimed at fighting the problem. Since the attacks on Madrid commuter trains in 2004 there have been 616 arrests in connection with jihadist activities in Spain and 139 combatants are thought to have travelled to fight in Syria and Iraq – 25 have returned. Acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy – who with other politicians cancelled events – appealed for “unity” in the face of extremism which threatened “all the countries that do not agree with their ideas”. Socialist leader Pedro Sanchez said on Tuesday: “Today we are all Brussels. Liberty, solidarity, and fraternity with the people of Brussels.” And Ciudadanos leader Albert Rivera said people could not simply look the other way. “We are going to defend the democracy that it took us so long to achieve, and the way of life that 21st Century Europe represents. “There are those who don’t like it that we Europeans can travel in a Europe without borders and enjoy our free lives, but we are going to defeat them.”

Seaside pier tragedy by CAROLINE TYSZKA

A FAMILY of five have died after their car plunged off a seaside pier in County Donegal, Ireland. In what appears to be a tragic accident, a car containing six members of the same family entered the waters at Buncrana Pier in County Donegal on Sunday, with the only survivor being a four-month-old baby girl. Sean McGrotty, 49, died, along with his sons, Mark, 12, and Evan, 8, his mother-in-law, Ruth Daniels, 59, and Ruth’s daughter, Jodie Lee Daniels, 14. The car, which was parked on the slipway leading down into the water, is believed to have slipped as the ramp was covered in algae. The only survivor was little Rionaghac-Ann, who was reportedly rescued by a man who swam out to the sinking vehicle and was passed the child through a window. It is believed that the family may have been admiring the sunset before the incident occurred, with onlookers unable to help save any other family members. Mr McGrotty lived just across the border with his wife Louise and their children, at St Eithne’s Park in the Ballymagroarty area of Derry. A close family friend said that “the only thing that is keeping Louise going is her little daughter. She told me the baby is now her sole purpose to go on living. We are very grateful to the man for rescuing her.” Emergency services rushed to the scene and were assisted by several fishing vessels. However, the rescue operation soon became a recovery mission, as the bodies of the two boys, their father, grandmother and aunt were found in the water.

Celebrations end in tragedy by Caroline Tyszka

A COACH crash on the motorway in the north of Spain killed 13 students and left many more injured as it returned to Barcelona from the Fallas in Valencia. Students, from six countries, were amongst people killed when the bus, swerved off the road and crashed in the Spanish region of Cataluña on Sunday. The incident took place at about 6am near the Catalan town of Freginals. The authorities said the vehicle hit a barrier on the right-hand side of the road, before veering across into the wrong lane and rolling on its side. A car coming in the other direction then struck the back of the bus. The 13 killed were all female language students, with at least seven of the dead coming from Italy. Pope Francis sent a note of condolence and prayer to families suffering an “irreparable loss”, as the Italian Prime Minister, Matteo Renzi, said that “he was heartbroken by the news.” Spanish authorities confirmed that two Germans, one French person, one Uzbek, one Romanian and one Austrian were also among the dead. A total of 43 people were injured, including the driver of the coach, who was questioned by police on Sunday, whilst in intensive care, being treated for chest injuries. He was held at a police station in the city of Tortosa but later taken to hospital. Police reported that he tested negative for drugs and alcohol, and, in seventeen years, had never had an accident. All the students were part of the Erasmus programme, which provides foreign exchange courses for students from countries within the 28-nation European Union. One British student, Tallulah Lyons, aged 19, who was injured in the crash, spoke with British media from her hospital bed in Tarragona.

Tallulah said: “I was sleeping at the front of the coach and remember waking up with people screaming. At that point I think we got hit by another car, but I’m not sure. I don’t remember a lot. It took two hours to get everyone out of the bus. It was people who were trapped who died.” The father of one of the Italian victims, Alessandro Saracino, has questioned why the coaches were travelling through the

night and in heavy rain. Talking about the loss of his 22 year old daughter Serena Saracino, he said, ““I happily sent my daughter to study in Spain and she is being returned to me dead.” The coach was part of a convoy travelling back through the night, with the occupants of the other coaches not aware of the accident until they arrived in Barcelona

Plague of pigs Bait was laid down in the Cartagena suburb of Los Mateos in an attempt to round up a 150 strong colony of Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs which has begun to take over the area. The plan is to catch the animals during April and take them to specialized centres where they can be looked after. The pig problem is believed to have started with the escape, or abandonment of a breeding pair, as these animals are quite often kept as children’s pets but grow. And, at first, reports of a few foraging potbellied pigs were treated as a source of amusement. Unfortunately, nature appears to have taken its course, and the problem has inevitably multiplied.

US President visits Cuba PRESIDENT OBAMA and his family have been in Cuba for a three day visit, the first US President to set foot on Cuban soil since the 1959 revolution. Arriving in Cuba on Air Force One, Obama, his wife Michelle and their two daughters were greeted with umbrellas and welcomed by the Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez. The visit, which the president described as “historic”, lasted three days, and was the highpoint of newly established communications which have included the opening of embassies, direct flights and commercial deals between the two nations. Hours before the president’s arrival, police removed dozens of demonstrators from the Ladies in White group, formed by political prisoners’ wives, who were protesting outside a local church. The President met with a dozen Cuban dissidents on Tuesday, and spoke of their “extreme courage”, in a conversation that touched on their concerns about issues such as religious freedoms and freedom of the press. When asked about the detention of dissidents, before the President’s visit, a White House official said, “we reiterate our call for the Cuban government to end the practice of arbitrary detentions.”

Uproar at gagging order by Ian Askew

RESIDENTS OF a Costa Blanca town are “outraged” they no longer enjoy access to the local council to raise community issues and matters of concern. The mayor and councillors have cancelled quarterly meetings and ignored emails and letters - and have closed the doors of the town hall to worried home owners. And home owners allege instead of welcoming the representations of democratically elected and legal residents’ associations, Benitachell Town Hall has formed a ‘citizens committee’ with politically appointed members. Tom Blackie, President of Vecinos Puig Llorenca, a residents association of Cumbre del Sol with 750 members and affiliated members, said none of the members of the new committee had any mandate from people living in the various areas they were said to represent. The body was formed by Mayor Josep Femenia and Councillor Dirk Rheindorf – who had appointed his mother Connie to represent Cumbre although she did not live on the mountain. “This was only two or three weeks before she was going to court, knowing full well she was going to plead guilty to charges,” said Tom. A former councillor, Connie Rheindorf escaped jail with a six month suspended sentence after admitting her part in a property fraud involving the sale of a home on Cumbre. Tom quoted Councillor Dirk Rheindorf, who said about the new committee: “It was necessary to create an official council of residents to give a voice to the population that represents the majority of people and is, from now, the speaker of the residents of the municipality.” BLOCK And Tom said: “Basically, he has put a block between us and the town hall and put in a group of people including his mother.” Cumbre del Sol has 3,300 properties; 50% of the housing stock of Benitachell. Because of the value of the homes, it contributes 70% of the IBI tax – rates – collected by the town hall; yet residents say it did not enjoy a fair share of services and new amenities. Tom said residents had been pressing for things like rubbish collection, water supplies, and fire hazards to be dealt with – as well as long running requests for infrastructure improvements such as road repairs and proper road signs for Cumbre. “All we want is to build a community and improve relations with the town hall,” he said; adding the situation with the appointed committee was “totally unacceptable”.

Tom said: “We have a situation now where the majority of (resident association) presidents are outraged by this - we are all elected and nominated representatives.” Instead, the Cumbre associations find themselves accused of trying to becoming involved in politics. “Because we raise questions, because we demand to be heard, because we want to build a community, they think it will create a political imbalance. “Our view is it is time the people of the urbanisations sit up and pay attention to what is actually happening in Benitachell because it is democratically obscene.” For more information about the Cumbre association visit www.cumbredelsolresidents.com or email president@cumbredelsolresidents.com.

Freemasons’ great giveaway by JACK TROUGHTON

THE MASONIC Home of Valencia donated “a magnificent” 136,457€ to help charities and good causes in 2015, association’s Annual General Meeting was told. The largest amount was 103,400€ for two ultrasound scanners for Denia Hospital, the meeting – which included eight members of the board members and 23 members - at the Espai de la Senieta in Moraira heard. The first item on the agenda was the ratification of Sam Robinson as the association’s new President; a motion carried with a huge majority. The AGM was also told of current state of the finances – accounts showing a small loss over the last three months. This was said to be mainly because of the ongoing financial crisis but there had been a “very healthy profit” over the past 10 years. And it was felt the money would soon be recouped as investment conditions improved. The following donations were also made: Jalon Valley HELP, 5,000€; Alzheimer’s Association Teulada, 5,000€; Bay Radio Appeal, 5,000€; EMAUS Calpe, 5,000€; Ells special School, 4,407€; emergency aid payment to a local resident, 2,000€. St Georges Day celebrations RTN ARE proud to be part of the sponsorship team helping to make the 3rd St. George’s Day celebrations, in Alfaz del Pi, the biggest yet. In 2014, a group of businessmen decided that British residents should get together and celebrate St George’s Day, as other nationalities did in the region. A fake wedding and birthday of local residents Rachel and Stephen, regular customers of a popular Indian restaurant in Alfaz, was chosen as an appropriate opportunity and venue for the first attempt to organise a St George’s Day celebration. It worked really well, attracting 170 guests, all dressed in red and white, with the following year 330 people attending. The 4,300€ (including individual donations from local businessmen of 100€ each) was donated to the lo-

cal charity, Alfaz Food Bank. Encouraged by the success of the previous two years, the 2016 version has now been organised. It will take place on Saturday 23rd April, at the Almafra Campsite in Alfaz del Pi, starting at 12 noon, and going on until late in the evening. There will be food, drink and live music all day long, with the aim of raising money for the Alfaz Food Bank and also to help local resident Majbrit, who is suffering from a life-threatening disease and needs specialist surgery in America. Sponsors of the event are RTN; The Curry Pot, Pride Construction, Corona Blinds and Toldos, Union Jack Bar Benidorm, Hepburns Bar Albir, Steve & Janette Malone, Steve & Janice, Mark Carter Plumbing Services, Leeonard Knowles Construction, CP Signs and, finally, Vista Gym La Nucia. Further sponsorship is, of course, very welcome, and tickets can be obtained in advance for 5€ from The Curry Pot, the Town Hall, Almafra Camping in Alfaz, and Hepburns Bar and the Companions Social Club in Albir. On the door, tickets will be 7€.

BURGER KING BATTLE By Caroline Tyszka THE BURGER King situated at the bottom of Jaime I in Benidorm is still fighting an eviction order that should have been enforced some months ago. The popular fast food chain, Burger King, had a lease for their current premises on the corner of Avenida Uruguay for ten years, which began in 2001 and, therefore, expired five years ago. However, despite being under the threat of the building being demolished, the restaurant remains open and fully functional, and has appealed against the decision several times, each time being refused. Quick Meals Ibérica, who has the Burger King franchise, would be responsible for all the costs of the demolition, which council members are now calling to be actioned immediately. Lourdes Casalles, councillor for planning, told local media that “we want to recover the land as the owners of the site are no longer entitled to use it.” The original eviction was ordered in October last year, and further underlined in December. However the Quick Meals Ibérica Company is still considering further legal appeals.

News from afar Web masters

AMERICAN SCIENTISTS believe they are beginning to understand how spiders pinpoint struggling prey caught up in their webs. When an unlucky insect is trapped, its attempts to free itself send vibrations that bring spider scuttling from the centre of its web looking for a feed. And at a laboratory in Oregon, a two-metre spider’s web made from aluminium and rope is beginning to unlock the mystery of how the eight-legged beasties interpret the signals. The boffins unveiled the replica web at a meeting of the American Physical Society along with their first results. Ross Hatton, from Oregon State University, said they constructed the artificial web with two different kinds of rope, simulating how spiders use two different formulations of silk. Radial strands fanning out from the centre were made with stiff nylon parachute cable, the strands crossing them are elastic bungee cords and the web sits in an aluminium frame. A powerful speaker is used to start the vibrations while at the centre of the web is a mechanical spider. It does not move but detects vibrations through its feet, just like a real predator. Dr Hatton said the first hypothesis was if one of the radial lines was shaken, the spider would feel it move a lot and other lines less. “And so you could say, well I just go to wherever the line is shaking the most.” However, the team found the orb web revealed a much more complex set of vibration patterns, including “quiet spots” where shaking vanished. The scientist added: “At different frequencies, different strands – so different feet – stop vibrating. This might indicate, for example, different types of trapped insect. “So at the very least, the spider is going to know how the frequency couples with the web structure...in order to find which is the foot that shouldn’t be shakings – so it doesn’t end up going off at 90 degrees to where it should be going.”

French air traffic strike chaos

FRENCH AIR Traffic controllers once again caused severe disruptions across Europe, with hundreds of flights being delayed or cancelled. Travellers, looking to start their Easter breaks, arrived at their local airports at the weekend and into the beginning of this week, only to see the departure boards full of delayed or cancelled flight notices, with thousands of people being affected. The industrial action, which began officially on 20th March, also affected passengers from the UK on the 19th, with many EasyJet flights being delayed or cancelled. One flight, from Bristol to Alicante, saw passengers waiting on the runway for over an hour, as the airline desperately tried to negotiate a slot to take-off. Others reported that they had to run onto planes as slots suddenly became available. Passengers on the flight said that “the captain was brilliant and kept us informed at all times, even letting a couple of children visit the cockpit area when we landed in Alicante.” This was one of the shorter delays as, during Monday, reports were flooding social media of some people being stuck for over 36 hours at overseas airports, unsure how they would get home. Alicante-Elche airport, in El Altet, confirmed that 30 planes had been grounded on Monday. A BA spokesperson said that they had dealt with the situation by using larger aircraft where possible, and rerouting flights. On Sunday, EasyJet confirmed that 82 flights were cancelled, of which 32 were scheduled to take off from British airports, with figures increasing by the end of Monday. An EasyJet spokesperson said: “we worked with our customers and helped them to reorganise their journeys wherever possible.” Ryanair was also forced to cancel hundreds of flights between airports across Europe. The industrial action finished on Tuesday with the airlines again calling for such industrial action to be made illegal. A Ryanair spokesperson said that the European Commission should intervene in order to prevent British passengers being “held to ransom” by “tiny numbers” of French workers.

Drummer bummer by

Chris Ashley

Writer & Broadcaster

BUDDY RICH being wheeled into surgery was famously asked by the anaesthetist if he was allergic to anything? The drummer replied “Yeah! Country music.” Must have been an interesting meeting in the afterlife – Mr. Rich meet Mr. Cash – uh-oh! here comes Ms. Wynette and she survived being married to the brilliant, but terminally unstable, George Jones – not to be messed with Buddy. We country music fans get mighty riled y’all, when a City Slicker thinks it’s all – Yee-haw! Well alright there is a bit of that. Anyway what does a tub thumper know? He’s just someone hanging about with musicians, as the old showbiz adage goes. The thing about self indulgent drum solos is that like an impending sneeze, or a rather more basic bodily function, you know one is approaching, but there is absolutely nothing you can do about it. Mind you, I’m getting into a Mr. Pot meet Mr. Kettle scenario here. In previous RTN rambles I’ve mentioned performing with a skiffle group in the 1950’s to total apathy. Later in the early ‘70’s after returning from Australia, and digging the Beach Boys, I joined a tribute band called – wait for it – The Bleach Boys, pretty nifty, huh? Well it would have been if we were appearing at Surf City, Southern California, and not The Miner’s Welfare, Upper Ramsbottom. Our general daft surfing dude persona and rubbish harmonies were about as popular as Donald Trump in a Mexican Mariachi Band. In our defence The Real Deal Surf Dudes would have struggled against the beery bingo

bedlam. So what can be learnt from the horror of it all. First, I’m in no position with my CV to disrespect anyone with a musical bent, even bongo bashers. Secondly, never meet your idols. When the Beach Boys appeared in Brighton, I finagled a back stage pass to meet(after Elvis) my all time idol, Brian Wilson. Oh dear, oh dear! This poor man had entered the Land Of Looney Tunes, and not as a cosy cartoon character.

This was approaching “That’s All Folks.” territory, for real. The rest of the group (including his siblings Carl & Dennis) seemed to be blissfully unconcerned. Brian has survived, (ironically his younger brothers didn’t) albeit looking uncannily like a cross between Ronald Reagan & one of the Thunderbirds. Hallelujah, ‘God Only Knows’ in his infinite wisdom, but ‘Good Vibrations’ keep on coming.

Listen to Chris on www.power-fm.es, Weekdays 12-3pm & Saturdays 9-12pm.

IF UNFORTUNATELY you are one of the consumers who was deceived by the CAM Bank, and this bank sold to you Participating Shares, you should know that these shares are a complex investment product, and in case of insolvency of the entity their holders will be the last ones to get paid, and they are also a perpetual investment, i.e: there is no time to recover the money invested.

Thus, according to the Spanish courts in accordance with the Spanish legislation, the CAM when they decided to sell and commercialize, they should: .-Make to the potential investors interested, a test of suitability and appropriateness to determine whether it was an appropriate product for them or not. Unfortunately, this product was sold to retail consumers inexperienced in complex investments. We understand that the CAM should advised not to purchase to all non-expert investors. .-Likewise the CAM had an important information obligation (Article 79-bis, of the Securities / Stock Market Law), and inform potential investors in an adequate, clear and easy to understand way, about the risks of the product, potential expenses, costs, consequences, etc., so that the client could make an informed decision about their willingness to invest or not. Unfortunately, CAM did not inform investors of the complexity of the product and the difficulty or impossibility of recovering the money invested. But fortunately, as has happened with other banking toxic products, such as preferred shares, subordinate shares, etc., the Spanish courts are granting court decisions in favor of the affected consumers, declaring null and void these contracts of purchase of CAM participating share, and forcing the bank, now Sabadell, to pay back the money paid by investors. In this sense, and in the province of Alicante, there are some court precedents in favor of

investors, like: .- The Court Decision from the of First Instance Court No. 2 in Benidorm, in its Judgment number 97/2015 of 14/04/2015. .- The Court of First Instance No. 1 of Alicante, in its judgment No. 168 of 09.07.2013. .- The Provincial Court ( Appeal Court) of Alicante, Section 8, in its ruling No. 94/14 of 30/04/2014.

Therefore, if you were sold Participating CAM Bank Shares, and you are not an expert in complex investments, and the bank did not inform you about the complexity of the product you were buying; you can claim for its purchase to be declared null and void, and request the return of the investment, plus interest and expenses. Contact us and we will help you.

MONEY

Where not to invest AS IT has been the worst start to the year for financial markets ever recorded and investors are split between a mentality of bargain hunting and a want to protect against further downside in more defensive ways. But where should you not invest if you want the potential for return. Government Bonds: Whether you are looking at gilts or treasuries or anything in the developed market then you are looking at yields that are close to their historic lows and you are looking at inflation that – while benign today – will clearly start to rise soon. Today if you’re buying government bonds, you’re locking in to negative real returns going forward. Adrian Lowcock , head of investing at AXA Wealth, also says sovereign debt, particularly from the UK government, is best avoided. “I would probably avoid gilts. Although they have repeatedly surprised investors with how low their yields can fall. But as they do the risk continues to rise,” Lowcock said. Commodities: In the short term I would steer clear of these, there could be a lot more pain to come and at the moment there is just too much volatility for the average investor. Savings and deposit accounts: The Bank of England could be forced to cut interest rates to combat low inflation and kick-start the economy, according to official forecasts. The Office for Budget Responsibility, the Treasury watchdog, said the outlook for rates in the UK has changed ‘significantly’ in recent months. ‘Our forecast is consistent with the bank rate being reduced below 0.5 per cent for some of the next two years,’ it said in a 254-page report published alongside the Budget. It added that rates are not expected to reach 0.75 per cent until 2019 – a full decade after the Bank cut rates to 0.5 per cent – and only rise to 1.1 per cent by 2021. In the EU rates could maybe even go negative and when they might rise is anyone’s guess maybe 2025? Get rich quick schemes: At the moment there are lots of get rich quick schemes being touted by cold callers, be it via the phone or via post. One that has recently been highlighted is being offered by a company called TB Options. According to the letter you received: ‘The realistic earning potential with a £10,000 account doing £500 trades is £400 PROFIT per trade, and even if we only have an 81.7% success rate, you will still look to achieve weekly profits in the region of £1,000 – £2,000.’ You do not even have to decide whether stocks and shares, or currencies and commodities, are going to rise or fall. TB Options ‘will find all the best trades and do all the analysing on your behalf’. All you need do is hand over your savings and the firm will tell you how to place spin-of-a-coin bets on price movements, with instant profit – or total losses. And I am afraid TOTAL LOSSES it will be, remember if it sounds too good to be true is usually is, so run a mile, don’t get suckered in. Want to know what investment options are out there for YOU? From Russia with love

by JACK TROUGHTON

RUSSIAN BARBERSHOP quartet ANIMA is headed for the Costa Blanca and an international convention – the group’s first visit to Spain. The four-strong group are part of some 600 competitors taking part in the Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers’ convention based at the Hotel Bahia in Calpe from 31st March to 3rd April. And the fun starts with a public celebratory concert on Thursday 31st March at Calpe Casa de Cultura at 8pm, when the

singers will be supported by Marcia’s Dance Studio. ANIMA was formed in 2004 as a six-piece in St Petersburg by director Iumshanova Liudmila; since 2014 the band has performed as a quartet. It has repeatedly won the Grand Prix of all-Russian and international competitions and performs classics, modern arrangements of folk songs, songs by modern Russian composers and holy music – as well as traditional barbershop. It is also hoped the group can perform at the Russian Orthodox Church in Altea on Saturday 2nd April.

Tickets for the Calpe Casa de Cultura show are 12€ and curtain up is 8pm. They can be purchased on the night but for reservations call 693 017 617 or email tickets@sabs.es. The Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers (SABS) was founded in October 2008 by brothers Nico and Jorge de las Penas, inspired by a trip to their first harmony college in Germany. Their tenacity and enthusiasm made SABS a reality. Nico was the first President and in April last year was replaced by founder member Lyn Banes, assisted by Vice President Barbara Burks.

Time management in the garden GARDENS ARE contagious. Many keen gardeners are always thinking of new designs for various corners, trying to raise plants from seed or increasing the amount of propogation from cuttings.

by

Dick Handscombe Holistic gardener and author

Very quickly time runs out. On the other hand the not so keen gardener just doesn’t seem to get the time to do the basic maintenance jobs each year as other activities are first choice. It therefore makes good sense to consider how we might gain a few extra hours a week by changing some of our gardening beliefs and habits. Start by considering whether to continue with some of the greatest time wasters in gardens along the Costas. 20 COMMON TIME WASTERS. Watering with a hose rather than a computerised irrigation system. Cutting and weeding a lawn versus having more terraced areas that can be swept or more shrubberies that take up less time. Planting too many perennials that need weekly, even twice weekly deadheading. Planting colourful summer beds of annuals that need constant attention. Having too many thirsty plants in pots, especially if the pots are relatively small, terracotta and filled with a low water retaining compost. Planting plants with large spaces between or trees with no ground cover plants below. Bare earth always increases the amount of evaporated water and allows weeds to self seed and multiply. Having pine, carob, acacia and olive trees that continously drop leaves, flower heads and fruit that have to be swept up. But before they are all cut down realise that the shade is worth the effort of a weekly sweep or rake which takes much less time than cutting a lawn. Having similar trees beside the pool which continually pollute the pool and treble the cleaning time. Yes remove the worst offenders fast. Being over fastidious in keeping the garden tidy. Nature is not by nature tidy. Leaves that rot down add valuable humus to the soil. We did have one neighbour who took out all trees and then terraced a large area with the same tiles as inside the house and then vacuum cleaned or washed them daily. There are better ways to have fun in Spain. Raising plants from seed especially if you get it all wrong and the seeds don’t germinate or all the seedlings rot off or die in the heat. Persevere with growing plants that you cannot obtain as plants from local sources. Watering established hedges causing them to grow rapidly and need regular trimming. Planting untidy plants that grow fast and need continual pruning . Growing more vegetables than the family can eat or vegetables that they don’t really enjoy eating. Parking the car under a tree without a cover so that it is soon dirty from bird droppings, resin from pine or acacia trees etc., and needs very regular washing. Not keeping the wheel of the wheel barrow blown up so that garden rubbish has to be moved in small bins. An untidy tool shed so that important tools are often mislaid. Poorly maintained tools, especially in respect of sharpening and having firm and sufficiently long handles. Using English gardening tools rather than the basic Spanish tools designed for hard dry soils. Having crazy paving laid on sand or earth and not a concrete base .As a result weeds continually grow between the slabs and being dry their roots go deep and wide under the path making weeding very time consuming. Laying stone chippings directly on top of soil without a heavy plastic underlay. Again weeds grow through the chippings and require weeding. Reflect on the above list. Decide which apply to yourself or partner fully or partially. Then make the big decisions ‘What are you going to stop doing as from 1 may and what preparatory work needs to be done over the next month to facilitate more restful and less time consuming gardening during the coming summer? Gardening in Spain is a challenge but it needs to be enjoyable, something that adds to your lifestyle and not an unwanted chore. If it is take on a good gardener or consider a move to an apartment.

Boots up

Hello Aunty, Hope you can shed some light on this, having upgraded to Windows10 from Windows7 on my Acer Laptop a major problem has resulted with booting-up namely: I turn the laptop on, it gets to the blue windows logo, then the screen goes blank, then it starts up again with another blue windows logo and finally boots up. The boot times have gotten considerably longer. After the first windows logo, there is this long blank screen for 120 seconds or more before second blue win logo and then the lock screen shows up. Any idea or tips that could help resolve this issue? Mark. Reply: Slow W10 boot times have been reported by many people who have upgraded from W7 or W8. For some, it has been an incompatible program or driver. For example, you may have to uninstall your antivirus program and reinstall a freshly download and W10 compatible version - or just use W10s built in Antivirus system. Also, some drivers that are required may not be available or compatible with W10. For example, the “black screen” may be that your current graphics card driver is not fully W10 compatible. So go to your driver manufacturers website and download the latest w10 compatible driver. I also found another possible solution from someone else with an Acer laptop - disabling Windows 10’s fast start-up feature. To do this, open the Start Menu and type “power options” and select Power Options when it appears. When the Power Options window opens, select “Choose what the power button does” from the list on the left of the window. If you see a small blue and yellow shield icon and the text “Change settings that are currently unavailable”, click the text. You may need to enter your password or your PC administrator’s password to do this. Now scroll down to the Shut-down settings list. Untick “Turn on fast start-up” and click Save changes. When you next switch on your PC you should immediately see a significant boot time cut.

Upgrade to Windows 10 Hi Aunty I recently (Christmas2015) upgraded to Windows10 from Windows7 and have been very happy with it. However, I have just recently noticed that the start-up page for Windows 10 has disappeared, (the one with all the Windows programmes and tiles displayed above the Windows icon and to the left of the page). I can right click on the icon but not left click.(nothing happens). As I am a senior surfer I am not too au fait with the workings of the computer and would very much appreciate your suggestions. Terry. Reply: Before I could reply, Terry sent another email: Hi Just been on computer again and Windows installed yet another update and GUESS WHAT??? The start up page I was referring to has returned!! Terry So it looks as if Microsoft acknowledge that there was a bug, and issued an update to correct this.

WITH A background in family and matrimonial mediation, Life Coach Sara Bell helps Readers with their daily worries. If you are having diffi culties with relationships, family, work or any other aspect of your life, then help is at hand.

He still has a hold on me Wedding dilemma I SPLIT with my ex-boyfriend 7 months ago because he was mentally abusive. I put up with his behaviour for far too long, and am trying to move on. My family and friends were telling me for years that I was badly treated, but I didn’t listen because I loved him. I finally found the courage to leave, having had lots of therapy. The problem is he won’t leave me alone. He phones and sends hurtful and insulting messages to my phone and on Facebook. I bump in to him at our local pub, and so there doesn’t seem to be any escape. Well, there’s only one thing to do - don‘t take his calls any more. Bar him from your telephone, and also defriend him from Facebook. Then choose another local Pub to go to instead. If his behaviour persists you can get the Police involved. In certain circumstances you can apply for a restraining order - a Solicitor can help you with this.

MY FIANCÉ and I are planning our wedding for next Summer. There is one family friend of my mother’s, who is a nightmare and usually ends up making a scene. I absolutely do not want this person at our wedding. I haven’t seen him or his wife for years anyway, and I am thinking of asking my mother to leave them out of the arrangements. If he comes, he will embarrass everyone. He once got up and made a drunk speech at a wedding, when he wasn’t even part of the wedding party.

Oh dear, there’s always one isn’t there. I think as it’s your day, you should have a say in who is invited, but if your parents are paying for the wedding, and as this couple are long standing friends, it might be difficult for them. Talk to your Mom about it and explain your fears. You could always cut down on the number of guests generally and say you only want a small wedding - that way you can make cuts without offending.

Tick-tock - almost time to change our clocks THIS WEEKEND it is time to adjust our clocks to reflect the spring hours, and lose an hour of happy slumber.

Choir springs forward

by Jack Troughton

THE COSTA Blanca Male Choir is busy rehearsing new material ahead of a busy new season and a full diary. In early May, the choir travels to Lloret de Mar – its first trip away – and the opportunity to perform at a prestigious music festival.

The first concert on home ground is on 14th May at the Salon de Actos in Teulada, when the choir also welcomes visitors from the UK, the Basingstoke Ladies Choir. And on 25th June, the choir is in Teulada again for the annual Charity concert – this year in aid of Make A

Smile, the charity supporting children living in EMAUS homes. Full details of these and other appearances will be published on the website www.costablancamalevoicechoir.wikidot.com or the Facebook page ‘ Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir’.

Crossover concert success

SINGERS GILL Henry and Manuel Lazaro entertained over 100 guests at the ‘Classical Crossover Concert’ in Moraira to raise funds for two local charities. The evening at the Espai de la Senieta Theatre was organised by the Freemasons of Deportiva Lodge and will support the Teulada Alzheimer’s Association and the Pedrera Hospital Ultrasound Appeal. For more than two hours, soprano Gill and tenor Manuel sang a variety of songs from classical to the musicals; ranging from The Man of La Mancha to Cats and Led Miserables to Phantom of the Opera. And the entire audience was invited to an after show party by Abi Satari at his restaurant ‘Satari’s’. Many people took up the offer and enjoyed relaxing afterwards.

On Sunday 27th March 2016, at 2am, clocks will go forward one hour, making it 3am, as we switch to Summer Time over the Easter bank holidays. Luckily, most mobiles and other devices automatically make this change for us, although it does mean you risk missing the odd clock around the house that needs that personal touch. The moving of the clocks was first introduced, during World War One, by Germany and Austria, and then by the allies, to save on coal usage, but did not become used across the world until the 1970s, because of the energy crisis. Arguments still rage over the economic or health benefits it brings, with those in favour saying that it saves energy, reduces traffic accidents and crime, and is good for businesses. However, those against say that it’s not clear if any energy savings are made, while there are also

potential health risks. SPRING HAS SPRUNG! By Anne-Marie Fry Yup! It’s happened yet again, Just don’t ask me why! That chance to alter ALL my clocks Has sadly passed me by. If only I could turn back time, But, my brain cell did a bunk! It’s Sunday – now I’m late for work All good intentions sunk... Spring has sprung! But unannounced, I’ve lain there in my bed. I just wish for once, alarm bells had rung Inside my dozy head! You can contact Anne-Marie by email at scoobysbenidorm@gmail.com or pop into ‘Scoobys British Cafe’, Benidorm, between 10am and 4pm to see some of her previous work. Commissions require at least three days’ notice. Scoobys is on the edge of the Old Town, on Avenida Alcoy 2, down the side of Modus 47.

I can just see the epitome of a death scene with not a dry eye on the grieving assembly and the dying central character propped up and getting ready to pass on, to pass over. A few cherished words are spoken around the bedside just prior to death, and peace is felt as death hits home and the soundtrack highlights the suffering and misery of those left behind! Whatever sent the scales crashing has helped you to recreate Death does inevitably bring about change, but it is very much not what people think that it is. Death is the great beginthe balance you need to bring happiness back into your life. ning, and it isn’t the end of anything. There should be no fear as this questions the of your emotions to ensure this is the result. Only set the highest standards and be true to yourself into the bargain abundance of trust that the Spirit World places with to get us to pass on and over to the Other Side, when the time comes. We are not alone on this magnificent journey, rather we are attended by a host of angels, for one thing. Look after yourself now, because that’s not selfish at all, but it is self preserving and it will see you across the stepping stones ahead. This astrological year shows that your stubborn pride can bring you the very best of results.

KENNY, HOW long is the mourning period? I know that there is a calculation that you can use based on how many years you have been together. I lost my husband last year. Ann T. Ann, there may be a guide that basis time with the mourning process but it cannot allow for the individual suffering you are still experiencing. Look in any Spanish village and you will see the widows in black who are following a dress code of conduct that equates with the mourning process. You may mourn forever, but for the sake of your husband in the Spirit World I hope you do not, because he will not want to see you distressed in anyway about his passing over. Send him smiles not tears please, and treasure the memories of the time you spent together.

Easter Bunny visits Albir by JACK TROUGHTON THE EASTER bunny made an early visit to the children in Albir at the weekend, as hundreds of people attended an Easter fair. The event, held on Sunday 20th March, was organised by Katie Dell, following a very successful Christmas fair at the end of last year. Stalls, offering crafts, toys, games and cakes, welcomed visitors from 12 noon, with a steady flow of people, throughout the afternoon, enjoying a variety of entertainment but, in particular, the Easter bunny. Jodie Gagg, from Animal Angells, thanked her team of helpers for raising 430€ during the afternoon, saying “the money will go towards food and vet bills. Well done Katie, for planning such a great event.” Mandy Marriott, who had a stall selling gifts crafted from books, said, “It was my first time doing it, and I was pleasantly surprised at the turnout. Everyone seemed to be having a lovely time, and the atmosphere, between the customers and the stall holders, was fantastic.” Local business, Sabor, raffled off a cupcake bouquet, which was won by lucky local Mrs Julie Willis, who thanked the restaurant, saying “I can’t believe I actually won something. Thank you so much.”

Talking Tanzania

MEMBERS OF U3A Marina Baixa were treated to an illustrated talk on Tanzania at the March meeting; staged early because of Easter. Over 160 members of the association listened to Ann Currie’s interesting talk about working in the community and how she spent her leisure time, together

with slides taken in Tanzania. The monthly meeting at the Casa de Cultura in Alfaz del Pi starts with members signing in and paying for trips and meals – before business begins there is an opportunity to enjoy a cuppa with friends. And afterwards, some 40 mem-

bers enjoyed lunch together at The Oasis in La Nucia, as usual the meal organised by Liz Parker. New members are always made welcome; U3A usually meets on the fourth Monday of the month at Alfaz. For more information, visit the website www.u3amarinabaixa.com.

Semana Santa THE EASTER celebrations started at the weekend, with the solemn Palm Sunday parades taking place in many local towns, including Benidorm and Alicante (Semana Santa). Throughout the week there have been solemn processions to mark the Christian event, which celebrates the resurrection of the son of god, and which culminate at the weekend with Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Full details of times and locations can be found at the tourist information offices, or online at www.benidorm.org; www.alicante.es.

Fun for St Patricks Day

By CAROLINE TYSZKA

THOUSANDS OF people, dressed in varying shades of green, descended on Benidorm to celebrate St Patrick’s Day. In what is considered one of the most popular expat dressing up days of the year, Benidorm, and surrounding towns, became a sea of leprechauns and giant Guinness bottles last

week, as expats took to the streets to celebrate St Patrick’s Day on Thursday 17th March. The one day event became a long weekend of partying, as many venues in the town organised live music and special drink offers, from Thursday until Sunday, to keep the customers happy. Many of the visitors had flown into the resort especially for

the event, including one group of twenty, who had travelled from Nottingham, and another party from Richmond in Yorkshire. Steve, one of the group, said: “We are having a brilliant time. You really get a party feeling here, which is why we make the trip every year.” The next big expat event is St George’s Day, on 23rd April.

Adjusting to a better life with hearing instruments by jack thoughton MEMBERS of the ADAPT association headed 25km inland to walk the hills surrounding the Vistabella Golf Club near San Miguel. The 16 members of the Association of English speakers of San Pedro del Pinatar met up at the clubhouse terrace for pre-walk drinks and the opportunity to view the destination; named by locals as ‘Two Trees Hills’. The route started from the clubhouse on a flat stony path and took the party around part of the perimeter of the golf course. Over many years water running from the hillside had cut deep crevices into the rock. The rugged path narrowed and snaked through a high cliff pass, we then had a slow gradual incline up to one of the peaks giving good views of the lower valleys and distant mountains. And the narrow track took members to the foot of the “Cabezo Redondo” a conical mound with what looked like a concrete chimney pot on the top, where there was a National Graphical high point plaque set in the concrete. There was an opportunity to take in stunning 360 degree panoramic views of La Mata salt lakes, Algorfa, La Finca Golf Course, and Guardamar. The return journey was along a downward path through the valley and a dense pine forest. The walkers reached the lovely Catholic Church at Benijuzar, but there was no access to the church as workmen were repairing the entrance steps. From the church we continued through the pine valley which opened up into a more rugged area with cliffs either side. A forty five minute walk along a narrow road led back to the golf course and then on to the clubhouse restaurant. Details of the Adapt Club and future walks can be found on the website www.adaptsanpedro.es

Annual meeting

JAVEA U3A stages its Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 30th March at the town’s Parador Hotel.

Doors open at 9.30am and new members will be able to join before the formal meeting begins at 11am; when the current committee will stand down but can seek re-election if they wish. A list of nominations for the committee election is available on the website www.u3ajavea.org and it is hoped as many members as possible will attend to vote for essential posts. Existing members of the association who have not renewed their membership can do so on the morning of the meeting by BACS payment. However, they will be charged a 10€ re-joining fee. And before the meeting begins, there will also be an opportunity to explore some of the activities U3A offers its members, as well as find out important calendar events, such as the summer ball.

HELP’s new home JALON VALLEY HELP is to open a new community centre this summer replacing the “bursting at the seams” Casa de Animo in Alcalali. The town hall has offered the charity a three-year rent free lease on the Centro Civico, also known as Bar Creu, the charity’s Annual General Meeting was told. HELP President Elaine Horton said she was “delighted” to report the new administration had offered the premises to the charity and it was hoped to have an official opening ceremony in the first week of July. And Elaine appealed for more volunteers to help prepare the new building – a team willing to decorate, do the gardening, move furniture, and do all the work necessary to prepare the new Casa de Animo. The original centre continues to be a “much-needed” venue for the whole community with a variety of groups using it throughout the week. The meeting, held in Jalon, was told that in 2015, the charity had raised a record amount of money allowing HELP to increase its cash reserves against future commitments and also pay out more in grants and support of the needy. Elaine thanked everyone for their support in a “difficult period” when serious illness and family commitments had affected the team – placing on record the committee’s gratitude to people who “stepped up” to provide the necessary cover. She said during 2016 it was hoped to consolidate the charity’s gains, recruit more volunteers to the team, open and develop the new Casa de Animo, and consider the development of new shop premises.

In the first chapter she says their magical abilities were ‘accepted and even lauded’ and those who could ´magic´ were seen as ‘healers’ or ‘outstanding huntsmen.’ But the Native Americans have criticised Rowling’s depiction of their culture, accusing her of ‘trivialising native beliefs’. Leanne Howe, a writer and citizen of the Choctaw Nation, told National Geographic “Native Americans cannot be given respect in the 21st century when POLISH DANCER Ola Jordan´s publishers are making all sorts of claims about her ´tell-all´ book about the goings on in and around Strictly Come Dancing. The book has been cheekily timed to be available in October just as the new series of the show is due to air, and according to The Mirror “This is one explosive book, that will reveal all the backstage goings on … it’s going to be one of the biggest page turners to come from the show, it will definitely ruffle a few feathers!” A source for the BBC said “We´re sure Ola has a lot to say, let’s hope she checks it all with her lawyers!”

I HAD to read this next item a couple of times just in case it was a spoof, but sadly it’s true. Mariah Carey, she of the amazing voice, is about to bastardise her god given talent and resort to the shoddy business of a reality show. Her manager Stella Bulochnikov is the mastermind behind the project, and the word is that Mariah is oblivious to everything that’s going on because she’s so in love with her fiancé James Packer. The now famous source said. “Stella comes from producing reality TV and calls herself the Russian dictator.” Wake up Mariah before it’s too late!!

their traditions are ‘trivialised’. Silly JK!

STEPHEN MANGAN starred alongside Matt LeBlanc in ´Episodes´ on the BBC, and if you missed it make sure you see it on catch-up TV. Mangan, who plays a scriptwriter in the show, revealed last week that he´s been asked by LeBlanc to appear on Top Gear on the show’s ever-popular ´Star In A Reasonably Priced Car´ section. Stephen said “It’s only because he has the fastest time for a celebrity ever, and he’s looking forward to humiliating me when I don’t reach that time!” Stephen also said “We’re shooting series five of Episodes next month, and that will be the last series.” Boo-Hoo-Hoo!

What a Double Header this is! WHEN I first saw the headline ´Elvis heading to the UK on tour, ´ I assumed it was some daft idea to crank up masses of modern technology and have a hologram of the great man performing live onstage, but when I read that Priscilla Presley would be appearing at each show, my line of thinking changed considerably. Priscilla has single-handedly brought her husband’s estate to where it is today, and announced last week there´s to be a six city UK tour where Elvis will perform the ´If I Can Dream´ album, and he will be assisted by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. “What an honour for me to present for the live debut of what has become a very prestigious and beloved album along with other favourites,” said Priscilla, before adding ”the performance will use archive material of Elvis’ performances with backing from the Philharmonic.” Priscilla also spread the word on social media with responses like “Good Grief!! Miracles do happen, and the UK gets an Elvis show FIRST!” … another read “I´ll be getting goose bumps sitting in the audience!” Tickets went on sale last Friday 18th March and the tour begins on Nov 17th in Glasgow – Leeds 18th – Cardiff 20th – Birmingham 22rd – London 23rd – Manchester 24th, so I suggest you don’t hang about. As if that was not enough, it was also announced last week that on July 10th at the Barclaycard British Summer Time in Hyde Park, Stevie Wonder will be bringing his ´Songs in the Key of Life´ album to the stage for the first time in the UK, an album that spent 13 weeks at No. 1 and won four Grammy´s including album of the year, and best male pop vocal performance. Tickets also went on sale last Friday 18th, so best get on the case mas pronto!

PLANS FOR a biopic on the life of Freddie Mercury began in 2010 then fell apart in 2013. Sacha Barn Cohen had made himself available for the part of Freddie, and last week he finally revealed the reason why he backed out. Talking to top US radio host Howard Sterne he said “Queen wanted Freddie’s death to occur half way through the film, then focus on how the band continued to thrive” said Sacha “no one´s going to see a movie where the lead character dies from AIDS and then you see the band carry on. “ Good point dude! Cohen also admitted he and Brian May clashed heavily … Aha! Rinkoff Bakery is situated in East London, and if you´ve not heard of their Crodough you don’t know what you are missing. It’s all to do with the infamous Cadbury´s Crème egg, something you might well be sitting eating right now. As its unlikely you´ll be able to get to the bakery anytime soon here´s how you make one. The Creme Egg Crodough is made by frying croissant dough, then injecting Creme Egg fondant into the middle of the dough ring, before topping with more fondant and a mini Creme Egg, OMG! How many million calories will that come out to?

Clothes, cava and canapés by Jack Troughton

HELP OF Denia and the Marina Alta dressed to impress to raise 525€ at successful fashion show ‘From Seconds to Fabulous’. The event at the charity’s Activity centre in la Xara last Friday started with cava and canapés before volunteers from the HELP team and friends modelled clothes and accessories. All the clothes on show were taken from the Moraira and La Xara Charity Shops, with nearly new clothing from brands like M&S and Zara, and other well-known labels – and there was the opportunity to snap up a bargain, with items starting at just 3€. And afterwards, HELP President Candida Wright thanked La Xara shop manager Amanda Rosser for organising the event and all the hard work behind the scenes and said “a big thank you” to all the models. For more information about the charity and the services it provides, visit the website www.helpofdenia.com.

Family favourite KITTEN SKINNY Minny is looking for a loving family after a vet saved the little cat’s sight with three months of treatment. Aged 10-months-old, she is currently being cared for by animal charity Jalon Valley ARC, and needs a home with outdoor space. Minny did not enjoy the best start in life. She developed a severe eye infection at just six weeks. At first it was feared she would have to be put to sleep, but the vet realised her retinas were intact and she was treated with antibodies taken from an adult cat. A charity spokesman said: “It took three months but saved her sight. Her eyes are a little watery but she is in excellent health and has been spayed. “She needs a home with outdoor space where she can be one of the family.” ARC has a number of other kittens, cats, puppies and dogs all hoping to find a ‘forever’ home. For more information, visit the ARC charity shop in Carrer Benissa, Jalon, between 10am and 1.30pm Monday to Friday, or call Sally on 625 985 689 or Jayne on 649 310 285. The charity website can be found at www.jalonvalleyarc.com.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Getting thinner and younger but more confused When people start learning Spanish they sometimes have the idea that all you have to do is translate individual words. Then they learn that the Spanish have a lot of different ways of saying things and that word for word translations just don’t work. Then comes the realization that the whole structure of the language is completely different, and that’s where the real fun begins. One of the ways English works is by putting lots of unchanging little words together into an endless variety of combinations. To express many of the ideas formed in this way into Spanish, one has to use an entirely different approach. For example, sometimes people ask me how to say “get” in Spanish. If I hesitate then someone else will suggest the word “conseguir” which means “get” in the sense of “obtain”, as in “I’m going to get a job” “Voy a conseguir un trabajo”. However, the real problem is that “get” can mean a thousand other things, depending on the context. For example, we have “to get up” (levantarse) “to get over” (recuperar, superar) “to get out” (sacar, escaparse) “to get on with” (llevarse con, seguir) “to get through to” (comunicar, entenderse con). Even within these few examples there are many shades of meaning in English. For example “to get on with” can mean to have a relationship with someone (llevarse con) or to continue doing a task, as in “get on with your work!” (seguir). “To get over” can mean to recover from an illness or other setback (recuperar) or it can mean to find your way through a difficulty (superar). If you are already “getting confused” you might wish to know the word to use is “confundirse”. As you are probably aware, I am merely scratching the surface of how to express “get” in Spanish, and already endless alternatives have opened up before us. One particular way we use “get” in English is with an adjective meaning to “become more ….” For example, we say “to get fat” which means “to become (more)fat”. The Spanish language has a completely different way of dealing with this idea. They take the word for “fat” (gordo) and turn it into a verb “engordar”. In English we would often say “I have put on weight”, where the Spanish say “he engordado”. “To lose weight”, or in other words “to get thin or thinner” is formed by the word for “thin” (delgado), giving us “adelgazar” (to get thinner). “This summer I want to lose a lot of weight” in Spanish is “Este verano quiero adelgazar mucho”. Just look at any woman’s magazine if you don’t believe me. We are all “getting” older, and in Spanish we “envejecer”, from the word “viejo”. Interestingly, we cannot literally get younger, but we can “rejuvenecer”, from the word “joven”. All of a sudden the English uses a Latin based word to express this: “to rejuvenate”, although we still retain phrases like: “You’re not getting any younger, dear!” English is an interesting language. Here are some more “get” words that work in a similar way. “Largo” means “long” and “alargar” is to “get longer” or “lengthen”. “Corto” means “short” and “to get shorter”, or “shorten”, is “acortar”. To “get more expensive” is “encarecer” from the word “caro” (expensive), whilst “to get cheaper” is “abaratar” from “barato” meaning “cheap”. “To get softer” is “ablandar” from “blando” meaning “soft”, whilst the opposite is “endurecer” “to harden” from “duro” meaning “hard”. Not all adjectives work this way and as you can see the verbs vary in their formation too, but this might set you on the road to new discoveries, or you could always make a new one up and see what happens.

Is your home earthquake proof? (Part II)

The “Norma de Construcción Sismorresistente: Parte General y Edificación (Ncsr-02)” Spanish Earthquake-Resistant Norm classifies buildings in accordance with their intended use and with the damage their destruction can cause, they are classified as: Buildings moderately important. Buildings with a negligible probability that their destruction during an earthquake may cause any casualties, disrupt a primary service, or cause significant economic damage. For example warehouses or agricultural buildings with access restricted to a small number of people. Important buildings. Buildings that if destroyed by an earthquake can cause casualties, disrupt services to the community, or cause significant financial loss, but their destruction do not interrupt an essential service to the community or may produce catastrophic effects. Residential buildings are catalogued here. Particularly important buildings. Buildings that if destroyed by an earthquake could disrupt essential service or lead to catastrophic effects and at least the following buildings are included: Hospitals, health centres. Radio television, telephone and telegraph facilities. Buildings used for support personnel and equipment such as fire stations, police. Buildings used for basic services supplies such as water deposits, gas, fuel, pumping stations, distribution networks, electrical power etc.Large civil engineering structures as nuclear power plants or power stations, large dams and those that, may result in potential risk from their failure. Buildings classified by the local authorities as historic or artistic monuments. The application of this Norm on the calculation of their structure is mandatory in all the “Important buildings” i.e. residential buildings, but depending on the region of Spain they are situated. Here in south east Spain the majority of municipalities fall under a zones with a seismic acceleration higher than 0,08g (g = to gravity) being that figure the limit for buildings to be calculated against earthquakes and include all “Particularly important buildings” and structures. We also saw that this EMS scale divided into intensities, let us give a description of the effect each grade may cause.

Grade I: the shock is not perceived by human senses, being detected and recorded only by seismographs. Grade II: the shock is perceptible only by some people while at rest, especially on upper floors of tall buildings. Grade III: the shock is perceived by some people within buildings. The vibration perceived is similar to that caused by the passage of a light truck. Grade IV: the earthquake is perceived by people inside buildings and some outside, but it is not scary. The vibration is comparable to that produced by the passage of a heavy truck. Windows, doors and dishes rattle. The furniture starts moving. Grade V: The earthquake is felt by most people inside and outside of buildings. Some people instinctively start to run away. Animals get nervous. Grade VI: The earthquake is felt by all people, inside and outside. Many people take to the streets in panic, some lose their balance. Animals run away. Crockery and glassware break, books fall from shelves, pictures move or fall from walls and unstable objects are overturned. Church bells toll by themselves. There are moderate damages in some constructions. Grade VII: Most people are terrified and run into the street. Many have difficulty keeping up. Vibrations are felt by people driving cars. Load bearing walls construction many suffer serious damage and some reinforced concrete buildings may be affected. Changes happen to the flow of springs and rivers. In some cases, well spring appears in new places and others disappear. Grade VIII: Fear and panic are wide spread, even in people driving cars. In some cases branches of trees are torn off. Furniture, including heavy furniture, move or are overturned. Hanging lamps are smashed against the ceilings due to the movement of the buildings. Many load bearing buildings are destroyed and some collapse. Reinforced concrete buildings many suffer serious damage and some are destroyed. Cracks appear on ground several centimetres wide. Grade IX: There is total panic. Most load bearing walls buildings will collapse. Many reinforced concrete buildings not design for earthquake will suffer heavy damage and some will collapse. Underground pipes will be partially broken. In some cases, railroad rails will curve and be out of ser-

vice. Cracks up to 10 centimetres wide will appear on the ground. Rocks will fall from mountains in some case even avalanches of rocks. Many landslides will happen. Big waves could be seen in lakes and reservoirs. The biggest earthquake recorded on earth. Incidentally the biggest earthquake recorded on earth was in Chile in the city of Valdivia, the earthquake had a magnitude of 9.5. There were 2,000,000 people made homeless. Valdivia sank 4 metres below sea level and caused the eruption of the volcano Puyehue. The quake was felt across the southern hemispheres, a tsunami swept across the Pacific Ocean, reaching Hawaii and Japan. Up to here we have had points of reference with earthquakes that have taken place before, from scale X on, there is a degree of speculative conjecture as to what may happen, even though scientist consider that the following may take place: Grade X: Most load bearing buildings will collapse. Serious damage will be inflicted to reinforced concrete o steel buildings. Great damages may occur to dams, bridges, railways. Most underground pipes will break. Streets paving and road asphalt will form large waves. Cracks on the ground could form from a few centimetres to a meter wide. Landslides will occur on most mountains. New lakes will form. Grade XI: Most constructions will suffer sever damaged or will collapsed. Damage will be caused to most major dams, bridges and railway lines. Most roads will be out of service. Most underground pipes will be destroyed. Ground will be significantly deformed by both land movements and rock falls. The skyline will change. And for the big one……Grade XII: All structures and buildings are virtually destroyed or are severely damaged including those built underground. The topography would undergo great changes. Large cracks in the ground bigger than a metre will appear with significant horizontal and vertical displacements. Falling rocks and subsidence occur in most valleys some of them disappearing and transforming them in lakes new ones appearing. The skyline will change dramatically and probably the whole world.

Adjusting to a better life with hearing instruments CHOOSING A hearing device is just the beginning of the journey to better hearing. How quickly you adjust to wearing hearing aids depends on how often you wear them. Initially you will notice an increase in the noise levels around you. This background noise has always been there but with your hearing loss you might not have noticed these sounds. As with anything that is new, it will take time and patience to adapt to this new way of hearing. Hearing is only part of how we exchange thoughts ideas and feelings. Reading lips, facial expressions and gestures can help. The following steps make communicating easier when you are adjusting to a new hearing system: Look at the person who is speaking and sitting face to face in a quiet room Minimise distractions: for example, washing dishes at the sink and trying to have a conversation is difficult even for those with normal hearing Move closer to the speaker and within sight Try different locations in a room with poor acoustics

When you use your instruments for the first time, you will notice that the hearing process feels different. That’s because your brain has to relearn how to hear sounds- especially the complex range of frequencies in speech. The following are observations that first-time hearing aid wearers have made: It takes time to adjust to wearing hearing aids Your voice may sound different at first Hearing situations with background noise should improve, but probably not as much as in quiet places This period of adjustment is completely normal but before long you will begin to hear sounds that you have been missing as well as some you didn’t realise were gone - such as the hum of household appliances. Research suggests that speech comprehension increases over time and also the more the instruments are worn.

If you have a concern about your hearing then call Richard G Sykes, RHAD FSHAA of Premier Hearing Services on 659 644 106 (premierhearing@hotmail.co.uk / www.premierhearingaids.es) for professional and personal advice. Richard covers all of the Costa Blanca area, and offers a free Hearing Test. The latest digital hearing aids are available and Richard is able to offer 50% off UK prices. Call now – you have nothing to lose and your hearing to gain!

Rugby La Vila by patricia thompson LAST SUNDAY Saw La Vila triumph over Barcelona University, 61-17, in a game where La Vila performed well, although, just maybe, their line outs could use a little work. The team is already champions, with two games in hand. On Saturday, the club played host to Gonzaga High School from Washington, in the US, where their under 18 team is the actual USA champions. They played against the Alicante under 16s, under 17s and under 18s, with Gonzaga winning all their matches. It was a great day for all, and the after match dinner was the biggest ever organized at the club, with 150 people enjoy the festivities. From 20th to 26th March, Clermont Auvergne, a Top 14 French Club, with all their international players, will be training at the club. Clermont is now second in the French Top-14 league. On Saturday, 26th March, La Vila under 16s will play Totnes under 16s, from England, at 4pm, and the under 18s will play New Panteg under 18s, from Wales, 5.30pm. The next first team home game will be on Sunday 10th April, at 12.30pm when they will play Sitges from Barcelona. Tickets will be 5€ for adults, and free for under12s. Now you can buy tickets at www.instanticket.es for the gate price. As usual, the Argentinian barbecue will be available, a large hot roll for 4€. If you want to join the after-match meal with the players, book your ticket at the bar. It is paella and a drink for 5€. The shop will be open on Sunday, selling the new Rugby La Vila hoodie, for 25€, and there will be live music from Mick and Peter, (Shades of Grey).

The 30th International Benidorm Sevens competition will take place on 28th and 29th May, where top teams will be preparing for the next Olympic Sevens Qualifiers. The first team play offs will be on April 24th, May 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd, and the final will be on 29th May, the same day as the Benidorm Sevens. Promotional games for the finals will be on June 5th and 12th. It looks as though the first play off home game will be Sunday 1st May, at 12.30pm. La Vila Rugby Club is situated at Carretera El Pantano, Villajoyosa. Just take the motorway AP-7 exit 66 (Villajoyosa). At the first roundabout head for the mountain. It is about 1 km from the Motorway exit 66. Alternatively, take the Villajoyosa by-pass, and take the middle exit, at the first roundabout bear right towards the motorway entrance and at the second roundabout bear left towards the mountain. If you are interested in joining La Vila contact Jason Craig on 659 67 47 68 or Ignacio Davila 608 06 82 08 or email oficina@rugbylavila.net.

Altea Golf Club Secretary/Captain Challenge Pablo Riestre, organised a two man team Texas Scramble competition to promote Altea Golf Club, formerly Club de Golf Don Cayo, the oldest golf club on the Costa Blanca, to golf societies in the south of Alicante. 40 players turned out for a ‘shot gun’ start on a chilly afternoon, for what turned out to be a very closely fought competition. The results were: 1st Quesada Super League, Dave Smith and Andy Trefry, 68.50, 2nd Lo Marabu G.S., Ray Muttock and Andy Drinkall, 69.50, 3rd Los Noruegos G.S., Bjorn Scharning and Christine McKeag,69.75. Nearest the pin on hole 4 was John Goulder – Spanglish G.S. The day ended with drinks and a paella.

Slamtastic

AFTER 13 years of hurt, England’s fans were finally in dreamland last night as Eddie Jones’s men delivered a long-overdue Grand Slam in Paris. In his first season in charge, the Australian head coach saw his team land the prized clean sweep of a Six Nations championship in which they have been the dominant team. Jones’s men scored three tries to none but were unable to pull clear as a succession of breakdown penalties allowed France to stay in the game through the boot of scrum~half Maxime Machenaud. But England moved away in the last 10 minutes to record a victory which sees the world’s best resourced rugby nation land a Grand Slam for the first time since Martin Johnson’s men won in Dublin in 2003. This team is not in the same league as that one. Yet!!! But they have a band of young guns including Maro Itoje, George Kruis, Billy Vunipola, Anthony Watson and Owen Farrell who could go on to be a world-class unit in years to come.

After the horrors of their World Cup exit at the pool stages, England could not have responded in better fashion. Under the unexpectedly excellent leadership of Dylan Hartley - who left the field 67 minutes into last night‘s win after being knocked unconscious in a collision - they can rightly claim to be the best team in the northern hemisphere. Their last win at the Stade de France came in 2012 yet there was hardly anyone in Paris before kick-off who appeared to be backing a home win. England’s recent history of blowing Grand Slam chances must have been playing on the minds of some of the senior members of Jones’s team despite the Australian’s attempts to distance himself and the squad from what had gone before. The last time England completed a Grand Slam, in 2003 under Clive Woodward, they went on to win the World Cup in the same year. Jones has stated his intention to make his side the most dominant in Europe and he made it clear to his players in the lead-up that winning the championship was not enough. He wanted a clean sweep. Credit must also go to Wales who were runners up. But incidentally got the same point difference as England even though they only won 3 of their 5 games.

Bowling championships Two days of glorious weather was matched by two days of glorious bowling, as Javea Green Bowls Club enjoyed their Championship Finals. Pride of place went to Diane Wynne who, after being runner-up on three previous occasions, finally lifted the Ladies Singles Trophy beating Chris Evans. The Gents Singles went to Alan Phillips defeating Greg Sperring and the Mixed Singles to Nick Cole against a “gutsy” John Pittaway. A special mention for the Novices, with less than two years bowling experience, who both performed well and showed that the future looks bright, Peter Shaw overcame Steve Lilley. The Veterans Trophy was one of the closest matches played and last years’ Novices winner Chris Salter, took the experienced Jonathan Barr to the wire, before finally missing out 19-21. On the first day of Competition the Mixed Rinks match was settled on the last end as Wendy Symonds, Steve Upton, Tony Hesketh-Field and Jenny Rich won 14-13 against Chris Salter, Pat Pittaway, Dave Gardiner and John Pittaway. At the same time the Mixed Triples match was also the subject of a tense finish. After much deliberation it went to Gail Chick, Barry Elms and Greg Sperring to give them a 15-14 victory over Chris Reeves, Carol Davey and Dennis Reeves. There were four Pairs competitions and the winners in the Mixed Pairs were Chris Evans and Clive English against Velia Wood and Nick Cole. The Drawn Aussie Pairs was won by Jill Nobbs and John Pittaway against Brenda Burgess and Greg Sperring. And the Ladies Pairs went to Gail Chick and Chris Evans over Olive Lutz and Velia Wood and the Gents Pairs was won by Gary Kent and Alan Phillips against Barry Elms and Greg Sperring.

Alfaz Fantasy Football League by patricia thompson There was one Monday Night game & a full Premier League Programme at the Weekend which gave the Alfaz Fantasy Football League 24 goals,7 clean sheets,33 yellow cards and after last weeks flurry of red cards none were shown this week. At the top of the A.F.F.L. Joe ‘s team Keith Lard F.C. are showing no signs of easing up as they become the 1st team to reach a 1000 points. With the finishing line in sight they have a 39 point advantage over 2nd placed Dogdale.Maxine’s Plaistow13hammers & Dazza’s The Pheonix Club both remain in 3rd and 4th place. At the other end of the table Lyn’s team Handbrake City are not showing any signs of movement as they are now 63 points adrift of Alison’s Foxywise. In our U.K.T.V.SPAIN Junior League Nathan’s team Tyrannosuarez-Rex increased their lead at the top to 13 points over Harley’s team Ginger Ninjar.Last Season’s winners of this section Super Rhys are still well in contention and are only 16 points behind the leaders.Down at the foot of the table Bradley’s team Hero to Zero have returned to the bottom spot and are 8 points behind Lily’s Sponge Bob. Maxine’s Plaistow13hammers are enjoying a good run of form thanks to her 5 West Ham players who have helped her keep hold of the top spot of our Mark Carter Ladies Section as well as picking up our 20 euro voucher sponsored by QUICK SAVE Supermarket in Albir when they finished up 2 points ahead of Isabel’s team The Bluebells.Karen’s Ceasar’s Blackcats moved up to 2nd place in the League just 1 point ahead of Joanna’s Hup Hannah City. In our Leonard Knowles Construction Golden Boot League we have 2 teams that are setting the pace at the top.Pearson’s Smashers have a slight 3 point advantage over Jukeboxers then comes Johnny’s Rockets 43 points behind the pace setters.Mark’s No Bad Losers and Handbrake City are still struggling at the bottom. We have 3 teams going into our Monthly Premier Imports Draw for a case of Cava and they are our 2 top scoring teams Mick’s Marvels and Joe’s Gonners who both bagged 48 points. The other team joining them is our lowest scoring which was King Carra Kop who failed to bother the scorer. Manager of the Month for March has been kindly sponsored by Danny at the SARITA’S Restaurant in Albir who provide an excellent authentic Indian Cuisine at reasonable prices. The lucky winner this Month is Tom whose team Benidorm Trotters just pipped Joe’s A.C.Eccles & Plaistow13hammers by 1 point.

David’s team Rhuddlan Reds have won this weeks Breakfast for 2 at Rafters sponsored by Kate when they moved up 35 places in the League to number 147th. The Draw for the Quarter Finals of our RTN K.O.CUP Competition is now up on our website and will be played on 2nd & 3rd April Weekend. Ian’s Tasty Toffees have taken a 12 point lead at the top of our RTN F.A.Cup League over Parky’s Players then comes When Skies are Grey and Plaistow13hammers who are both well in contention. With no games coming up over Easter because of the International Break it will give you chance to check up on how your team is performing by visiting our website which is www. alfazffl.com or if you can’t access a computer you can always pop into one of the Bars which support us by displaying all the League Tables and Results on their Notice Boards in Albir The Local & Wyndhams,in Benidorm Union Jack,in Alfaz Robins Nest and in Moraira Barilloche.

Special Easter Operations by n332.es The special traffic monitoring operation that covers the Easter period began on Friday, with a total of 14.5 million long-distance journeys expected on the roads of Spain between now and the 28th of March. Like many special operations, the flow of traffic intensifies from the inland and city areas at the start of the period, and just before Easter weekend, with more people travelling towards mountainous and coastal areas to enjoy their leisure time. Then after the Easter weekend, the traffic flows away from the touristic areas and back inland. In between, there will be busier periods for short journeys in localised areas with a focus on leisure and shopping activities, as well as attendance of the religious events. In order to try to improve the flow of traffic, the DGT recommend avoiding traveling at the peak times, if possible, and planning your journey around quiet times. For this, they have provided a handy infographic indicating the busiest times from Easter Wednesday through to Easter Monday. For this first weekend, there will be an expected 3,450,000 journeys up until Sunday evening. During the second phase, the special operation runs from Wednesday the 23rd, starting at noon, and finishing on the evening of Monday the 28th. Although Easter Monday is not recognised as a holiday in many areas, if is an autonomous holiday in the region of Valencia, and so the Costa Blanca will still see busy roads until after this day.

In order to make the roads safer, all unnecessary road works will be banned and extra “circumstantial lanes created to improve traffic flow in the key areas. If you come across one of these special lanes, remember that there are rules regardingusing your headlights during the day that drivers must adhere to. The Guardia Civil will be carrying out extensive checks on speed, as well as the consumption of alcohol or drugs, which may require testing, and driver and vehicle documentation will be scrutinised at the roadside. In addition, during these checks, vehicles will also be monitored through electronic devices and have their insurance details confirmed. This will also be done during roadside checks, and vehicle characteristics will also be inspected, including compliance with tyre safety laws and other safety critical defects. From the air, the DGT will have all 12 of their helicopters monitoring traffic, 8 of which are equipped with the Pegasus airborne radar equipment which monitors speed, as well as the use of seatbelts and mobile phones. In fact, since its operation, Pegasus has monitored 75,000 vehicles and issued 18,274 fines, equating to the equipment capturing and burdening a dangerous driver with a fine every 3 minutes. There are also additional roadside radars in place, as well as the new cameras monitoring seatbelt use, all aimed at making the roads safer by sanctioning, and hopefully educating, road users who put others at risk.

Dutch Man Arrested for Car Insurance Scam Officers from the National Police have arrested a 79-year old Dutch national from Altea, after he allegedly faked the theft of his car in order to falsely claim the insurance. Border Patrol officers from the National Police became suspicious of a vehicle parked in the car park at AlicanteElche airport. The age of the vehicle indicated by the number plates on the car didn´t seem to match the apparent physical condition and age of the vehicle. As such, the officers carried out a more thorough inspection and found the number plates to be fake, correctly identifying the vehicle as one reported as stolen from the Benidorm area. The subsequent investigation led the officers to believe that the owner himself parked the vehicle at the airport, and changed the number plates, before claiming the 20,600 euro from the insurers. The man has been arrested and charged for the crimes, whereas the vehicle has been delivered to the insurance company as the now rightful owners.
