SPAIN IS the safest country in Europe to buy property ‘off-plan’ following a new Supreme Court ruling, say victorious lawyers. by jack troughton

Banks have a legal duty to protect and guarantee deposits made by people following their dream and buying homes in the sun, the highest court in the country has decided. And the Supreme Court judgement fixes “jurisprudential doctrine” regarding bank liabilities and obligations under Spanish law, Ley 57/1968 – helping return confidence to off-plan purchasers. The court ruled Caja Canarias – now Bankia - “obstinately denied reality” regarding two off-plan purchases in Fuerteventura.

Happy Birthday HER MAJESTY Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her 90th birthday yesterday (Thursday) at Windsor Castle surrounded by her family, including the growing number of grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Read more on page 4.

It follows lower court victories for Hellin for the Finca Parcs Action Group concerning Las Higuericas Finca Parcs development at Agramon in Albacete, just over the border from Murcia, which in December last year were accepted as jurisprudential by the Supreme Court and became ‘definitive’ following the latest case. And it was a personal victory for action group leader Keith Rule who started the fight back in 2008. He now works for the legal team that represented Finca Parcs victims; Costaluz Lawyers and De Castro Gabinete Juridico. And as well as the first landmark victory in Hellin, they have together won more than 150

cases against developers’ banks and continue to represent losers. Keith is even known as the ‘Erin Brokovich of Spanish off-plan property, after the tireless heroine who took on the system in the USA. RULING The new ruling at the Supreme Court involved the purchase of two off-plan properties in Fuerteventura. Contracts were signed in 2006 and Caja Canarias received the deposits and issued a mortgage to the developer.

A word from JT

THE RED, white and blue bunting is once again out brightening up the lives of those working in RTN Towers as we celebrate another milestone in the life of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, her 90th birthday. Royal watchers are in for a treat as newspapers and television bring out photographs and footage of her remarkable reign; early favourites are the Queen with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and the amazing portrait with her daughter Anne, the Princess Royal. Both are essential snaps for the Buck Palace family album. People planning to buy homes off-plan in Spain - and those seeking justice after losing precious savings following their dream of a place in the sun – also have reasons to be cheerful this week. Spain’s Supreme Court has ruled banks holding deposits and staged payments for the bricks and mortar must guarantee the cash should things go belly up and developers go to the wall. It was always easy for victims to win cases against the promoter but they stood little chance of a seeing any money back – while banks have sack loads of the stuff. The court’s ruling will now be carved in legal stone and give buyers past and present security. The common sense behind the judgement has long been needed and it can only help the country’s recovering property market rather the tragicomedy of the property bubble and all its excess and greed. And the story gets even better. The true grit of one Englishman and his dedicated legal team are behind the victory after years of campaigning and legal action; victims looking to make good their losses should now fi nd an abundance of lawyers prepared to take up their cases ‘pro bono’, on a ‘no win, no fee’ basis.

Mixed emotions over dog beach by Jack Troughton PROPOSALS TO open a ‘dog beach’ at a Marina Alta town have split residents and triggered a heated debate. Calpe has proposed opening one of three small beaches to owners and their pets but people living nearby are vocal in their opposition to the move. Should the project go ahead, Cala de la Manzanera, Playa Puerto Blanco, or Cala de les Urques will be selected after public consultation. Councillor Carole Saunders is gauging public opinion and said the town already has two “well used” dog parks. “People don’t realise how little coast there is and therefore there are very few spots that dogs can legally enter,” she said. “We get complaints about dogs running on the beaches every morning; they are there illegally and the reason there’s no police is because at that time officers are on traffic duty at the schools and colleges.

BLUE FLAG “All these people are acting irresponsibly letting their pets on the beach. We live for tourism and our beaches are very important – we could risk losing our Blue Flag status.” Whichever of the three sites is chosen, and Mrs Saunders said each had associated problems over their suitability. “And I get told all the time that people don’t clear up the mess in the streets so they are not going to clear up the mess on the beaches,” she said. “However, there are a lot of people for a dog beach. Some people think it is a wonderful idea and there are hotels taking dogs now as well.” And regularly cleaning a dog beach with special disinfectant would involve extra cost. She said Calpe did not have long beaches and sand dunes where dogs could run without disturbing other beach users. “There is a possibility of allowing dogs on beaches out of season – this is done in the north of Spain and in other countries.”

Long to reign over us BRITISH AMBASSADOR to Spain Simon Manley paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as she celebrated her 90th birthday. by JACK TROUGHTON He said the Queen was the longest reigning monarch in British history and 90% of the British population had never known another monarch as head of state. Mr Manley said: The Queen has been a source of continuity and stability throughout her 64 year reign, embodying the spirit and values of the British people, from the days of the Blitz, to today’s diverse and creative Britain. “I have had the honour to meet her, and see at first hand her intelligence, knowledge of international affairs, and famous sense of humour. She does not speak publically, but we British are happy with that; the Monarchy is as popular as ever.” He said Her Majesty had special links with Spain. Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh, and King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, were all great-great-grandchildren of Queen Victoria. “I lose count of the people I have met here with fond memories of her State Visit to Spain in 1988,” said the ambassador. He hoped the State Visit to the UK by King Felippe and Queen Leticia, cancelled earlier this year could “one day” be reinstated. Mr Manley concluded: “As Her Ambassador to Spain, I cannot imagine a greater honour than to serve Her and my country. I wish her a very happy birthday. Long may she reign over us.” Picture is the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh at the annual Trooping of the colour; a historic event marking her official birthday.

CONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE AN EARLY court hearing in 2010 ordered the developer to return the deposits with interest but because of its fi nancial situation, the company could not pay. Instead, a lawsuit was fi led against the bank under Ley 57/1968. The case and subsequent appeal were lost but in 2013, a Cessation appeal was fi led, and accepted into procedure the following year. The Supreme Court has now upheld the appeal, revoked the earlier court judgments and ordered Bankia to refund the deposits plus interest dating back to 2007 – as well as having to meet all legal costs. In the ruling, judges said house sales governed by Ley 57/1968 meant banks receiving money from buyers into the promotor’s account – without requiring a special account and corresponding guarantee “shall be liable to the buyer for the total amount paid by buyers and depositied into the account or accounts the developer has opened.” And in relation to the conduct of Caja Canarias, the judges said: “In this case, the defendant obstinately denied the reality of the off-plan payments made by the buyers, who were not the only ones to pay off-plan amounts to the said account, until that reality was incontestably established. “Its legal duty to control the buyer’s funds was hardly debateable as it was precisely the entity that had granted the mortgage loan to the developer for the construction.” BUBBLE The legal team paid homage to Keith for helping to stop the “fi nancial voracity” that led to speculation, illegalities and the real estate bubble in the buying and selling of off-plan property in spain. The team said he was a small business owner from England who saw in 2006 what the Supreme Court had in 2016 defi ned as jurisprudence. “He also led protests and petitions that may have contributed to the reform of the law that now makes Spain the world’s safest country for off-plan property purchases.” Keith said it was “hugely signifi cant” Finca Parcs beat CAM Bank and his biggest hurdle until fi nding Costaluz Lawyers was fi nding a law fi rm shat “also sharedmy view” over Ley 57/1968. Maria de Castro, director of Costaluz Lawyers, said: “These victories against bank in favour of consumers are good for a balance economy and for rebuilding trust in the Spanish legal and judicial system. “Keith’s eff orts inspired us all...he realy is like a dog with a bone – he just never gives up.” And Jaime de Castro, director of De Castro Gabinete Juridico, added: “Spain is unique among European countries in having an eff ective law to safeguard buyers’ off-plan deposits. “The Spanish courts have been applying this law strictly and I am confi dent this will continue.”

Keep reservoirs closed ALICANTE’S PROVINCIAL government and Benidorm council have united in an appeal to stop the opening of the Amadorio and Guadalest dams. by Caroline Tyszka Two weeks ago the Hydrographic Confederation of Júcar (CHJ) agreed to open the dams and release 20,000 cubic metres of water into the sea, despite the region being on drought alert. The current water shortages have seen the consortium of local water for the Marina Baixa request an emergency transfer of drinking water. Benidorm Mayor Tony Perez asked the CHJ to use “common sense.” Water is released from the dams to create environmental flows in the reservoir gullies. However, calls are being made for an exception to be applied due to the current dry conditions.

Boxer rebellion BOXER SHORTS are needed to help to help kit out men cared for at the Franciscan Brothers shelter on Palma Gandia. HELP of Denia and the Marina Alta has asked for new boxers to be donated in sizes ‘X’ and ‘XL’. The target is 120 pairs of boxers for the Underworld Underwear Collection – and 60 have been collected so far. Donations can be left at HELP’s office in La Xara, the Help desk at Denia Hospital, or at the charity shop in Moraira.

The provincial government´s Francisco Saez visited Benidorm to discuss the matter further with his counterparts. He said: “It makes no sense that the water needed is poured into the sea, their decision is nonsense.

And Mr Perez added: “We are investing heavily in transferring water from other sources ready for the summer; the CHJ should be using common sense. Surely people having drinking water is of paramount importance.”

Walk on the wild side

TWO MEMBERS of the volunteers at a Javea charity shop raised 3,035€ in sponsorship by completing the gruelling 29km Mirador Challenge to help get a youngster mobile. Aileen and BJ, who work at the Original Charity Shop and Library, hoped to raise 2,000€ for ‘Alberto’s Fund’ but smashed the target thanks to the generosity of the shop’s staff and clients, private sponsors, family and friends. Alberto is a nine-year-old suffering from a severe muscular disease and is confined to a wheelchair – but as he gets older and grows, it is more difficult for his mother to lift him and the wheelchair into the car. The youngster is now almost as tall as his mum Jessica Molina Romero and she desperately needs an adapted vehicle. As a result Aileen and BJ decided to take on the Mirador Challenge to raise more money for the appeal, joining the GYMKINS team of Kinsa, Patricia, and Sue – completing the 92km around Javea’s 15 official viewing points or ‘miradors’ in five hours and 30 minutes. And anyone wishing to donate to the fund can contact the Original Charity Shop and Library or go to www.charityshoplibrary.com for more information.

Drone hits BA airliner by Caroline Tyszka AN INVESTIGATION has begun after a passenger plane approaching Heathrow Airport is believed to have been hit by a drone. The incident occurred as a British Airways Airbus A320 was coming in for its final approach just after midday on Sunday 17th April. The flight from Geneva was carrying 132 passengers and five crew when it was struck by an object. The pilot safely landed the plane and reported the incident saying that he believed they had been hit by a drone. A British Airways spokesperson said: “The aircraft landed safely and was examined by engineers before being cleared for its next flight.” If the ´drone strike´ is confirmed, it will be the first recorded incident in the UK and the Metropolitan Police’s aviation security unit based at Heathrow is leading the investigation. The incident follows a warning earlier this year by the head of the International Air Transport Association that drones flown by the general public are “a real and growing threat” to civilian aircraft. The UK Air Proximity Board, which investigates nearmiss incidents in UK airspace, said there had been a number of serious near-misses at UK airports involving drones. Flying one near an airport is punishable by a prison sentence of up to five years. Calls are being made for tighter restrictions to be enforced similar to that in the USA, where a compulsory registration scheme has been introduced so any device recovered from an accident can be traced back to its owner.

Early nispero season by CAROLINE TYSZKA NISPERO SEASON has arrived two weeks earlier than normal producing smaller fruit than previous seasons. Farmers in the Marina Baixa have announced that due to the lack of rain this year, nispero crops have ripened too early and are about 30% smaller in size. Producers across the region began harvesting the fruit at the end of March because the low rainfall but higher temperatures caused them to ripen faster than normal. The smaller fruit which are sold by the kilo will result in drastically reduced incomes for the farmers – but will apparently have more fl avour because of their higher concentration of sugar. A spokesperson for the Callosa cooperative said: “It is one of the worst seasons that I can remember, I am not very happy.”

Animal shelter cruelty

EMPLOYEES at an animal shelter in Malaga have been arrested for animal cruelty following an investigation triggered by complaints from the public. by Caroline Tyszka Guardia Civil officers have arrested four employees at the Triple A shelter in Marbella and are investigating a further thirteen – with healthy animals allegedly being destroyed without anaesthetic. Those arrested have been charged with animal abuse, fraud, unfair treatment of workers and being members of an organised criminal group. It was alleged animals were put down without any clinical examination or anaesthesia, and in some cases drugs were administered in inadequate doses, causing the animal to suffer. Animals, including puppies and kittens waiting to be rehomed, were reportedly destroyed to save costs by nonmedical staff, said to have also performed other veterinary procedures. However, some animals were transported to other parts of Europe for a fee of 300-350 euros each, but none of this income was declared. Prescriptions were forged enabling animals to travel with inaccurate passports and some pets had their microchips removed so that others could adopt them according to the Guardia Civil report. The Triple A association has spent the last 25 years collecting abandoned and lost animals in the areas of Marbella and San Pedro de Alcantara. It promoted itself as a charity

dedicated to the support and care of animals, offering a decent a home for them. The shelter was able to keep going with money raised

through donations, membership fees and fundraising events and received high praise from individuals and groups helping what they believed was a genuine cause.

Charlotte donates her golden locks by JACK TROUGHTON SCHOOLGIRL CHARLOTTE Tennant decided to cut her hair short – and donate her 12 inch plait to the Little Princess Trust in the UK.

Her golden tresses will be used by the charity to make a beautiful 100% natural wig and be given to a young girl who has lost her hair because of treatment for cancer. The big-hearted 11-year-old told her parents: “I want to donate my hair to make a wig for someone who has cancer. My dad has had cancer but is getting better now, so sending my hair is very important to me.” Charlotte’s parents spoke to Lucy Rogers-Walls, owner of Mimi’s Hairdressers in Javea, about cutting off her hair – and designing a fashionable short bob for her – and Cancer Care Javea helped arrange the locks to be sent to the Little Princess Trust. And following the “wonderful gesture” by Charlotte, a 600€ donation was made to Cancer Car; the money raised by Mimi’s clients, charlotte’s friends at the Laude Lady Elizabeth School, members of her karate club, family and neighbours. Maggie Mackenzie of the charity said: “Cancer Care had the most unique donation from probably one of the youngest and most inspiring young lady we have met.” Pictured is Charlotte before the cut and the youngster with Cancer Care President Lyn Buntrock (centre) and Lucy Rogers-Walls, who ”nervously” cut Charlotte’s hair.

Women freed from prostitution

A JOINT operation between four police forces has resulted in several women being freed from enforced prostitution. by CAROLINE TYSZKA OPERATION GAVELO, coordinated by Europol, has arrested twenty nine people and freed twenty nine Chinese women who had been forced into prostitution in various cities in Spain. The police offi cers from Spain, China, France and Andorra united to dismantle the network of human traffi ckers and as a result searched twenty two properties around the country. The women, who were forced to take drugs, were discovered in various houses and entertainment venues in Madrid, Valencia, Zaragoza, Toledo, Soria, Girona and Lleida. The investigation, which began last year, was instigated following a visit to one property in Soria where two Chinese women were found to be working

against their will. It transpired that the two women had been sold at a bazaar in Soria for the sole purpose of “sexual traffi cking.” The women had been enticed with the promise of work if they travelled to Spain. Once in the country they were divided between the various properties and controlled by “madams” and male “protectors” in addition to video surveillance systems to ensure that they complied with the rules. The Chinese offi cers helped the Guardia Civil communicate and help the victims, and, the information that the women provided has enabled the authorities in both countries to learn more about the traffi cking network. The operation, which is still active, has been a milestone in international cooperation as offi cers from both China and Spain worked in both countries sharing information and personnel.

All the way from Texas BLUES LEGEND and harmonica player Paul Orta is the special guest at the Costa Blanca Blues’ 4th annual Mojo Party on Tuesday 3rd May in Teulada. by JACK TROUGHTON Paul, the frontman of Texas blues band The Kingpins, is said to be one of the most talented and friendliest musicians “on the planet”. And with his band, he has opened concerts for such household names as BB King, John Lee Hooker, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Van Morrison and The Fabulous Thunderbirds. He has shared his unique style of harmonica playing and rich vocals with audiences across more than 20 countries – so a real treat awaits the Mojo Party at Bar Mediterraneo. CB Blues founder Karla Daracos said: “It is a mind blowing situation. When I started this project, the goal was to build a blues music appreciation culture or network; but I had always hoped it would become a magnet in order to attract some of the true legends of the genre to our part of the coast.” Paul was born in Port Arthur, Texas, also the home town of one Janice Joplin, and at seven fell under the spell of Louis Armstrong – but after playing the coronet for nine years quit the school band because it never played blues or jazz. In 1979, he moved to Austin, Texas, and found his way to the historic Antone’s Nightclub, and began performing with some of the big names on the circuit. He is endorsed by Hohner Harmonicas, one of the few players endorsed by both by the company’s USA and Europe branches – he even designed his own ‘slide harp’ to achieve a unique sound.

Hotel chain bans mobility scooters

Servigroup have announced that mobility scooters will no longer be permitted in their Benidorm hotels. by Caroline Tyszka A decision by the the company to stop mobility scooters being used in any of their Benidorm hotels from May 1st 2016 has resulted in many holidaymakers raising concerns about their already booked visits, particularly those that rely on the adapted transport to get around the resort. Airlines such as Jet2 have begun notifying their clients via email about the new rules with the popular website tripadvisor being inundated with angry customers wanting to know how they will manage. The chain has nine hotels in the town, all of which will follow this new policy. These are: the Castilla; Diplomatic; Calypso; Nero; Orange; Pueblo; Rialto; Torre and Venus. RTN contact the group and were told that the new policy would not affect disabled guest that travel with their wheelchairs and were staying in their hotels that provide adapted rooms. Their spokesperson said: “The companies that supply scooters are located very close to the hotels, therefore, guests who have

already booked their scooter can contact them and they will provide them with all the parking and charging solutions.” In October last year RTN reported that the misuse of mobility scooters in Benidorm may finally be ending as the council began laying down the law. The Councillor for Mobility, Jose Ramon Gonzalez de Zarate, announced at the time that his department would proceed with the closure of any business or establishment that did not comply with the regional laws regulating the rental of motor propelled chairs. The companies are required to provide a copy of why the scooters were rented under medical devices regulated under the Royal Decree 250/2004 of the Generalitat Valencia. RTN were given a statement explaining the hotel chains decision which reads “Servigroup Hotels have designated parking and charging zone for scooters, available to our customers, as we take access seriously. However, our parking zones cannot meet demand, given the explosion in the number of these vehicles in recent years the scooters have now invaded other zones, creating unnecessary barriers for customers and

defeating the purpose of our accessibility program.” Anyone who has been in the resort recently will probably have noticed that the amount of mobility scooters still remains high and although many are being used for their intended purpose a high proportion are still rented to those who do not comply with the regulations.

Dolphin’s final resting place THE BODY of a dead dolphin was found on a beach in El Campello this week. Found lying on the shore edge of the Punta del Riu beach on Tuesday the dead dolphin was in a moderate state of decomposition. Town hall maintenance workers removed the body to be sent to the University in Valencia where the Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology Institute will attempt to establish how the dolphin died. This is the first dolphin this year to appear on the beaches of El Campello, and because of the decomposed state it has been assumed that it died out at sea and drifted ashore.

I name this ship? by Caroline Tyszka THE VOTES are in for naming a new scientific research vessel, although it is highly unlikely that the current winning name of Boaty McBoatface will be chosen. The competition, which was launched to name a new research ship anticipated to be seaworthy in 2019, was the idea of the NERC (Natural Environment Research Council) and asked members of the public to suggest and vote on a name that reflected the work that it would do. The science minister, Jo Johnson, acknowledged there had been some “very imaginative” names but added that he wanted something that “captured the spirit of scientific endeavour”. Boaty McBoatface received over 124,000 votes putting it in first place with RRS Poppy-Mai coming second with 34,371. Poppy-Mai is a 16 month old girl who is suffering with terminal cancer. A more traditional name came third, RRS Henry Worsley, after the Antarctic explorer who died in January of this year. Other suggestions had been: RRS It’s Bloody Cold Here; Not the Titanic; What Iceberg; Captain Haddock; Big Shipinnit; Science!!! and Big Metal Floaty Thingy-thing. The new ship, being built at the Cammell Laird shipyard in Merseyside will cost £200 million and will be used to study ice sheets, ocean currents and marine life. NERC said that they would make an announcement on the name “in due course.”

St George’s Day celebrations RTN IS proud to be part of the sponsorship team helping to make the 3rd St. George’s Day celebrations, in Alfaz del Pi, the biggest yet. In 2014, a group of businessmen decided that British residents should get together and celebrate St George’s Day, as other nationalities did in the region. A fake wedding and birthday of local residents Rachel and Stephen, regular customers of a popular Indian restaurant in Alfaz, was chosen as an appropriate opportunity and venue for the first attempt to organise a St George’s Day celebration. It worked really well, attracting 170 guests, all dressed in red and white, with the following year 330 people attending. The 4,300€ (including individual donations from local businessmen of 100€ each) was donated to the local charity, Alfaz Food Bank. Encouraged by the success of the previous two years, the 2016 version has now been organised. It will take place on Saturday 23rd April, at the Almafra Campsite in Alfaz del Pi, starting at 12 noon, and going on until late in the evening. There will be food, drink and live music all day long, with the aim of raising money for the Alfaz Food Bank and also to help local resident Majbrit, who is suffering from a life-threatening disease and needs specialist surgery in America.

Sponsors of the event are RTN; The Curry Pot, Pride Construction, Corona Blinds and Toldos, Union Jack Bar Benidorm, Hepburns Bar Albir, Steve & Janette Malone, Steve & Janice, Kreative Bunting, Mark Carter Plumbing Services, Leonard Knowles Construction, International Beds, CP Signs, Ron on the Rocks and, finally, Vista Gym La Nucia. Further sponsorship is, of course, very welcome, and tickets can be obtained in advance for 5€ from The Curry Pot, the Town Hall, Almafra Camping in Alfaz, and Hepburns Bar and the Companions Social Club in Albir. On the door, tickets will be 7€.

Oscar Pistorius appears in court by CAROLINE TYSZKA THE ATHELETE Oscar Pistorius has attended court again for his murder sentencing hearing. As expected Pistorius was told that a postponement would be approved and a date of June 13th has been set for fi nal sentencing. The former Paralympian was accused of murdering his girlfriend in February 2013 and was initially found guilty of culpable homicide, serving a year of a fi ve year sentence in prison before being released under house arrest conditions at a property owned by his uncle. In December 2015 the prosecution had the judgement overturned by South Africa’s Supreme Court and judges then found him guilty of murder. Pistorius had always denied intentionally killing Steenkamp, his girlfriend, in his Pretoria home in the early hours of 14 February 2013. He insisted throughout his lengthy trial that he had mistaken her for an intruder, shooting four times through a locked toilet cubicle door, killing her instantly. The minimum sentence for murder is 15 years in prison, but the defence is likely to argue that Pistorius’ disability, both his legs were amputated as a young boy, and the time he has already served in jail should be taken as mitigating factors.

Villajoyosa medieval market THE VILLAJOYOSA medieval market will take place at the end of the month, organised by the craft association Amata. by CAROLINE TYSZKA Last year the market was a great success for the organisers, attracting lots of people to look at (and buy) a large variety of quality crafts. This year’s event is being held on 29th, 30th April and 1st May. Visitors will have the opportunity to buy directly from the person who made the object and can also have something specially made to order if desired as all participants bring their tools along. Each stall will offer “piezas únicas” (oneoff designs) for lower prices than in the shops and one stall holder, Miguel the potter, will be offering the opportunity for people to make their own little bowls or cups. From book binders to hand painted roof tiles the event promises to caters for as many crafts as possible.

Younger visitors can play table games or have a go on the merry-go-round, while their elders can fortify themselves in the tavern, the “pulpería”, tasting octopus, or typical Arabic food in the jaima. The slightly crazy musicians of Sol Redó will entertain at the market together with three talented artists, sometimes as jugglers, at other times walking around on stilts in a variety of characters and closing the market each night with a fire show. The market will be in the old town centre, near the bridge, and opens on Friday the 29th of April at 4 pm. On Saturday and Sunday the market stays open from 11 am till about 10 pm. For further information, available in English, contact the organisers on 639 979 678 or www.amata.es/Villajoyosa.

Air rescue in Polop

A SPANISH man was airlifted from the hillside of Polop at the weekend having suffered a heart attack. The mountain rescue group of the fire service had to evacuate a 66 year old Valencian man on Sunday from the climbing path on the Ponoch, in Polop, which is a largely vertical climb offering spectacular views. A helicopter flew the man to the Benidorm heliport where he was transferred via ambulance to the San Juan Hospital for immediate lifesaving surgery.

Elvis festival sell out BENIDORM WELCOMED over a thousand Elvis fans at the weekend for three days of non-stop Elvis mania. During the weekend the guests, over one thousand, visited various venues around the resort to see their favourite Elvis impersonators and take part in the many organised activities. The events started off with a Hawaiian Elvis Luau launch party where everyone got to know each other, although many had attended the festival last year, and so it was a chance to catch up with old friends as well as new. Each day there were quizzes, fun karaoke and even Zumba for the more athletic participants but the pièce de résistance came on the Sunday evening as a packed house gathered for a grand finale of Elvis tributes and dancers. Peter Phillips, one of the organisers said: “The weekend has been another outstanding success with 1,300 people at the Benidorm Palace making it a complete sell out. We had hundreds of people unable to buy tickets so the advice is to book early for next year - 21-23 April 2017.” Apart from a scuffle in the audience during the second half of the finale show, where the Guardia Civil were called to the venue, attendees said what a fantastic evening it had been.

Spain send troops to Ecuador by Caroline Tyszka THE SPANISH government have sent fifty army personnel to Ecuador to assist in the earthquake rescue operation. Following the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Ecuador last Saturday the Spanish authorities authorised an air force plane to transport trained emergency response personnel with search dogs to help with the search and rescue. Around three hundred people died in the disaster with many still buried in the rubble. As the Red Cross and other aid agencies appealed for aid the Spanish acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy offered the Ecuadorians tents, blankets and water purification systems. However Rafael Correa, President of Ecuador, stressed that specialist rescue team were more vital. Both the regional authorities in Valencia and Galicia have already arranged for medications to be sent to the affected areas.

Big screen feature scrapped

CINEMA GIANT AMC has scrapped its controversial plan to allow people to access social media during films. The international chain – which has more than 400 cinemas across the United States and a modern multi-screen complex in Manchester – believed taking a more liberal approach to the use of mobile phones would encourage a new generation of film fans. However, AMC has been forced into a U-turn after regular film audiences used social media to bombard the company with messages objecting to the proposal. AMC Chief Executive Adam Aron had announced the chain was investigating the possibility of allowing ‘texting’ during movies – while many cinemas ask audiences to switch off devices before the start of a film, he believed allowing their use would encourage youngsters to join audiences. “Whenever you ask a 22-year-old to switch off the telephone and not to spoil the film, they hear ‘please cut off you left arm above the elbow’,” he said. But he admitted the idea did not go down well with existing audiences and in a statement the company said: “In this age of social media we get suggestions from you virtually instantaneously. “This is a concept we have now relegated to the cutting room floor...there will be no texting allowed in any of the auditoriums at AMC theatres.” The change of heart over the “horrible concept” immediately won favour with delighted movie fans who welcomed the chain maintaining the status quo. “Bravo!” messaged one, and another sent her thanks, messaging: “I really like you for this.”

Dear Noah. We could have sworn the date for our departure is today, Tuesday 2350 BC, not yesterday, Monday. Never mind we’ll catch the next boat. Best Wishes, The Unicorn Family. Let’s spin the ‘what-if ?’ Wheel of Fortune visiting seemingly trivial events that caused all kinds of historical ramifications. When RMS Titanic sailed out of Southampton on April 10th Second Officer David Blair wasn’t on board, which was a damn pity as he may have saved some 1500 lives. He was deemed to be surplus to requirements by White Star Line for this particular maiden voyage. Land based Blair had inadvertently pocketed the key to the locker that housed the binoculars. Therefore the crew in the crows nest, without access to them, had a limited view of the approaching iceberg and the inevitable consequences. Just over 2 years later in 1914, stopping for a snack, started a chain of events that ultimately cost over 17 million lives. Bosnian anarchist Gavrilo Princip & cohorts had attempted to assassinate Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, but failed due to their ineptitude. The next day in high dudgeon & feeling peckish he popped into his local Sarajevo caff, when lo and behold up drove the Archduke’s car which had taken a wrong turn and stalled, fatefully, slap bang outside the watering hole. This time Princip seized the unforeseen opportunity, shooting the occupants dead precipitating World War 1. Jump into the time machine faithful reader and let’s alight into the first third of the 16th century. Consider Henry V111 getting jiggy with that little flibbertigibbet, the Boleyn strumpet, (my Gran’s phrase, another of her disapproving one-liners was ‘red hat, no knickers’. God’s boots - what would she have made of the Kardashian rabble?). If Henry had kept the crown jewels corralled in the codpiece & got in touch with the Relate of the day to iron out any problems with Queen Catherine – schooling (some 4 centuries on) would have had a different theological twist for some of us of a certain vintage. We had the choice of having religion beaten into us at a C of E establishment, or by those RC funsters – the Christian Brothers. Thanks Hank. So momentous events in history revolved around the most banal– a covert key, a Bosnian butty, and a randy Royal. Maybe that other Henry (Ford) was right “History is more or less bunk.”

Is the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) always necessary when buying or selling properties in Spain? DEAR LAWYER, we have been told that when a property is sold in Spain, the seller must always provide the buyer with a certifi cate of the energy effi ciency of the property. Is this correct? Is it necessary in all cases? Dear reader, thank you for your enquiry. The certificate to which you refer is regulated in the Royal Decree 235/2013, of 5th April, regarding the basic procedure for certifying the energy efficiency of buildings. The decree has origins in different European directives. In general, both landlords and sellers of a property (it does not apply to the sale of land without any construction), must provide a certificate that includes relevant and objective information about the property (construction / building), so its energy efficiency can be assessed. This certificate must be properly registered, and is usually obtained by an architect or other qualified professional. It can provide useful information since we would know what energy consumption the property that we want to buy or rent has, similar to knowing how much a fuel a motor car consumes, before deciding to buy it. It can also provide interesting information about the elements that are less energy efficient on the construction, and therefore, if the property is to be reformed, what areas need to be improved. However, there are exemption when the seller or landlord does not have to provide this certificate: -. In the case of buildings or parts of buildings with a total useful area less than 50 m². .- In the case of buildings purchased for major renovation or demolition. .- In the case of buildings ‌ which would be used for less than four months a year, etc. You also should know that according to Article 11 of the Royal Decree, the energy performance certificate is valid for ten years. Therefore, if you are going to buy or sell a property that already has a certificate of this kind from a previous sale transfer, provided that it is no more than 10 years old, it would not be necessary to get a new one. If you have any questions regarding buying or selling property in Spain, we can help, contact us.

Disclosure of Assets In light of the Panama Papers and their revelations, it would appear that not only tax evasion is in the headlines but also tax avoidance schemes. Evading tax by concealing income is illegal, avoiding tax by exploiting the tax rules technically is not. To help tax authorities in various countries to hunt out those individuals and companies trying to hide assets, the UK has recently signed a disclosure of asset agreement with Spain, Germany, France and Italy. What does this mean: It means that the UK, in partnership with France, Germany, Spain and Italy, have passed regulations that will lead to the automatic sharing of information about the true owners of companies, complex shell companies and overseas trusts. George Osborne said the transparency rules on beneficial ownership showed that Britain and other governments were working to shine a spotlight on “those hiding spaces, those dark corners of the global financial system”. Osborne said he hoped that the regulations, which will come into effect in January 2017, would be followed up by other countries. It has also been reported that finance ministers from other European countries had pushed Britain to extend the new rules to all trusts, rather than just those that “generate tax consequences “and will continue to do so. It is clear from the above that avenues that allow non-disclosure of assets to a tax authority, whether it be for the super-rich, corporations or individuals are slowly being closed or their existence and beneficial owners being r disclosed to tax authorities. If you haven’t done so already now is the time to get your financial affairs in order, you may no longer be able to evade or avoid tax but you can ensure your investments are in tax efficient products, approved by the tax authorities with full transparency. There are many legitimate ways YOU can mitigate your tax liabilities, if you want to know what your options are, I am here to help you find the right solution to make your money work for YOU, in the most tax efficient way possible. Announcing the winner of Pet Idol 2016

Golden Leaves Expat Services, the ground breaking initiative from Golden Leaves International Limited, is proud to announce that AVA, the beautiful white terrier owned by Sue Nutbrown, is the winner of Homes Garden & Lifestyle Show’s Pet Idol 2016. In addition to being voted the favourite pet of the show, AVA receives a Golden Leaves annual pet insurance policy to the value of €200. Sponsored by Golden Leaves Expat Services, the inaugural Pet Idol competition proved an extremely popular addition to the leading show of its kind in Costa Blanca held earlier in March. Pet Idol saw a wide range of entries featuring many precious pets and drew a large number of votes as well as raising much needed awareness for the work of the animal charity APASA. So much so that, in addition to naming a winner, a decision was taken to name an official runner up, an adorable 13 year old Benidorm rescue dog named Mutly, owned by Kathy Thomas. Barry Floyd, Managing Director at Golden Leaves International Limited comments on the award. “For the expat community as a whole, pets are so more than animals, they are in many ways much loved members of the family. They are pampered, cared for, and as shown by our Pet Idol competition, they are a source of great pride to their owners. We have been delighted to sponsor Pet Idol and to award the ultimate winner, AVA, with one of our pet insurance policies.” He continues, “Just as it’s important to get the appropriate medical care for the rest of your family, as and when they need it, pet insurance ensures you can extend this to your beloved pets. After all, in addition to the usual worries we have about pets, there are threats to pet health in Spain which simply don’t exist in the UK and about which many owners sadly remain ignorant. And, should you need to take your pet to the vet, there is no guarantee you will speak the same language, and treatment costs can be very expensive. Our pet insurance plans are available from as little as €3.37 per week for your dog and only €2.30 for your cat, and as with all of our services, we will be right there for you to help, right when you and your pet needs it the most.” For more information about GL Expat Services’ pet insurance, please call 8000 98309, visit glexpatservices.com or pop in and see their team at their new offices in Javea, in the Arenal at Avenida De La Pla 123-125, Edifico Caribe, Locale1 Javea 03730 Alicante.

Walk with pride

by JACK TROUGHTON CANCER CHARITY ‘Bruised but not Broken’ is staging its annual ‘Walk for Life’ on Sunday 1st May and is hoping for another bumper fund raiser. First staged in 2013, the walk is along a now well-trodden path along the seafront between the El Campello and Muchavista beaches – a distance of 10km, although people can just walk 3km or 5km. Charity founder Lorraine Brown explained the aim was to raise money to continue to offer respite breaks and support to Costa Blanca families affected by and living with the “monstrous disease” of cancer. Bruised but not Broken was launched to honour the life and courage of her daughter Bec Isaacs, who died in 2010 at the age of aged 32, after a four-year battle with bowel cancer.

Lorraine said throughout Bec refused to consider she was a ‘victim’ of the disease. “She claimed instead she was ‘bruised but not broken’; realising the importance of keeping a positive attitude and believing she would beat the disease.” And family and friends say Bec’s attitude helped prolong her life. “It was also very important we had support from each other and from outside sources.” Lorraine added: “From personal experience, we discovered although there is plenty of support out there, it is not always easy to find. As a charity, we offer practical, emotional, and financial support for those living with or affected by cancer.” Walk for Life is open to everyone regardless of age and whether they have one leg, two legs, or those who need wheels; “they are all welcome, including our four legged

friends.” Lorraine said people could run or walk – it was all about taking part. “We would especially like to see families entering, as this is after all, a disease which affects the family unit as a whole.” To enter, call Lorraine on 608 524 896 for details or call into the Bruised but not broken Charity Shop in Calle San Bartolome, 55, El Campello, for a registration pack – it includes sponsor forms, a Walk for life t-shirt, a wristband and information about the charity. Everyone receives a medal on completion of the event. Entry is 10€ and the charity hopes the walk will be well supported with people making themselves a little fitter at the same time. More information is available at the website www.bruisedbutnotbroken.co.uk.

Cooking in your garden this spring and summer

by

Dick Handscombe Holistic gardener and author

COOKING AND eating in the garden is one of the delights of living on the Spanish Costas from the French to the Portuguese borders. It is therefore important that gardeners include appropriate areas and facilities in their overall garden design and layout. Providing cooking facilities that are productive, healthy, reliable, fun and blend in with the garden. There are several such ways of cooking in the garden and of providing appropriate facilities. Some being mobile and others fixed. We review a range of practical options. Decisions to be made. There are a number of decisions to be made. Where do we want to eat in the garden? Do we want to be able to eat in one place or in several? Do we want to eat out for breakfast, lunch, tapas or dinner? What type of food and method of food preparation best suits our lifestyle and diet? Would we be best with fixed or moveable cooking facilities, or both? What cooking system, design and construction material best fits in with the style and layout of our current or intended garden. There are several types of facilities to consider. Each very practical on the Spanish Costas and in the inland valleys. Possible Facilities (a) Barbecues. Barbecues come in all shapes and sizes. Are we going to cater for 4 or parties of 20? Is barbecuing going to be a several times a week event or once a month? For regular barbecues there are four main options. 1. A brick, stone or tiled permanent unit. Perhaps built into the naya or special cooking hut cooking by charcoal, logs or gas. 2. A moveable metal barbecue light enough to carry or on wheels, with cooking by charcoal or gas. 3. A semi-permanent but moveable pottery barbecue. The advantage being that it serves as a garden ornament when not in use. 4. Barbecuing on open log fires is also a possibility but is banned in the summer in many areas due to the fire risk. (b) Ovens Ovens are useful for preparing roast meats. Anything from red peppers to a suckling pig. Also arroces al horno, squash and bread. Purpose built ovens are available but they tend to be harsh in texture. Ovens can be easily self -built from refractory bricks and stones to blend into the garden either on top of a terrace or wall or within the cooking naya. c) Tagine Cooking Tagine cooking is fun. Both within the garden and under a sheltered terrace in

bad weather. Two 25cm tagines that rest on earthenware charcoal heaters are just right for a meal for 4. If visiting Morocco hunt out the shop/stall who the locals buy from. The are incredibly inexpensive. Morrocan shops also sell them in Spain. (d) Paella Ring A Paella ring plus stand and paella pan (palero – which are available in various sizes) is a very convenient way of garden cooking. It can easily be set up anywhere in the garden and then stored away. Of course you can build in a paella cooking shelf alongside a permanent barbecue facility. Spaniards love to have a permanent outside roofed kitchen incorporating an oven, barbecue and paella ring. Paella pans are popularly used not just for paellas but for fiduea, frying chops, vegetables and fish. Not only can you cook with a palero but also ‘a la plancha’ with a griddle plate. (e) An Earthenware Cooking Plate placed over a barbecue, charcoal or low gas ring is useful for baking pitta bread, browning tostados or crisping up purchased bread. (f)Solar Cooking These are easy to construct from an Alsol kit of a metre or 1.4 centimetres diameter for use in the garden or on apartment terraces. Mine is illustrated and is of the one metre type. Please turn round 90 degrees Happy garden cooking this spring, summer and autumn – and on hotter winter days.

Sd card trouble Hola Aunty, When I insert an SD(camera) card into the slot on my Asus laptop the computer does not seem to recognise it, probably because I am looking in the wrong place. It used to be so simple before I changed to W10. I just want to put the pictures into a folder as I did with W7. Please help if you can. Regards, Mary

Reply: The most common cause will be that your SD card driver may not be installed. During the upgrade the driver may not have been available, so not loaded. First, check with any other another SD card if it is getting recognized or detected. Next, check that the SD card is actually recognised in another device. Next check that the card reader driver is actually loaded - Press Windows key + X key and click on Device manager. - Search for the Card Reader Driver. If it is not there, then you will need to go to the Asus website and locate and download the driver for your model of laptop.

Unwanted files Dear Aunty, Having decided to have a ‘spring clean’ I started to clear out some unwanted or never used files. But on some of these I get a window opening stating. :Error deleting file or folder. Cannot delete email short cut ,access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use. Have you any simple ideas how I might get rid of these unwanted files? Why don’t they include me? What DOES she look like? I CONSIDER myself a congenial person. I am single, and I know lots of people. However, I read on peoples Facebook pages, that a lot of socialising goes on within these groups, and no one ever seems to think to invite me along. I am retired early and I don’t have a lot of money, and perhaps they don’t include me for that reason. I wouldn’t take it personally. May be these people think you’ve got other friends, and are busy yourself. If I were you, I would take decisive action, and invite them round for a drink. Socialising needn’t cost a lot of money. Just an inexpensive bottle of wine, and a few nibbles one afternoon, sitting in the sun. I am sure you will find that once the invitation has been extended, you will likely start to be invited out yourself. Life is a two way street.

MINE MAY seem a trivial problem, but I cannot understand why my once beautiful daughter, wants to look like the girls with big lips and caterpillar eyebrows. I think the look is hideous, so false and tarty. I’ve told her how I feel, but it makes no difference. She draws on bigger lips and eyebrows. You can’t tell me men actually go for this look? I would actually like to hear from men as to whether they find this look attractive. My husband agrees with you, and thinks it frightful. For me there’s nothing like the natural look. I am all for the use of make-up to enhance a women’s looks, but this fashion for wanting to look like a street worker, leaves me baffled, and more worryingly it can send out the wrong impression to men. I just hope this trend will soon run its course. Wanting to change your look to any large extent can point towards feelings of inadequacy, and I would suggest delving deeper in to why your daughter wants to look this way.

You may feel that you will get no reward for stepping in the way that you have, but then silence too wasn’t an option; and you have to be true to yourself at all times. Astrological energies are nevertheless at your side across the Cosmos Venus conjuncts with Uranus bringing ingenuity and free enterprise into the equation. Somebody has been wrong to criticise you for trying to make a difference, but then there are aspects known only to you that they have no right to interfere with. Things have to get a little worse before they will get better, but then all will come right in the end because you have established a legacy of care! If you can keep your immediate comments to yourself then do so because they are lost on those who do not deserve to gain by this revelation. You have needed help but have been too proud and too stubborn to accept it; but in the here and now the difference you can make is by extending your silence, which will hurt those who sought to initially test you, now you can see the wood for the trees Take control of plans because it is the only way of avoiding disaster. You know that the tried and tested is the best way ahead, but there are reasons to be hesitant right now. Uranus, Planet of innovation connects with Venus midweek to bring things to a head very nicely. With a hidden agenda, and work to do, it is indeed time for back to basics, and a consolidation that all involved will welcome. You have yearned for the centre stage to illuminate your many talents, but it would seem that the ship has sailed and that you have lost your window of opportunity somewhat. Somebody has been economical with the truth, but this was your marker to negotiate a better deal for yourself. All will come right in the end, but you may just need to come down from your high horse to seal further success. Oddly you were in two minds before things swayed you to take some evasive action. You were in danger of being misunderstood at a time when you needed all the support that you could muster. It would appear that somebody has backed down at long last, but instead of taking any prisoners find the opportunity to ensure that something like this never ever happens again on your watch.

Venus connects with Kora and this is calling time on something, because time would appear to be of the essence right now. Instead of being congratulated for a job done, and done well, there are those who seek to prolong the agonies by a constant spate of carping and criticism. Rise to the occasion because you know that you can, Email your letters to me at: kennycorris@roundtownnews.com you just shouldn’t have to in the current scheme of things.

Kenny‛s Postbag

You have to be biting your tongue right now because you feel like lashing out on something, but two wrongs do not make a right and the Cosmos advises you stay cool and collected because you have other fish to fry! This is a week of innovation and change which you will welcome in right from the start, but it is far better to put your resourceful energy into carving a future for those who deserve it! Wayward Jupiter is not there to bring that little ray of sunshine into your life just now, especially as it is needed. As Saturn takes on Mars there comes an uneasy duty for you to perform this week. Though you will sail through it, there will be, for sure, a nasty taste at the back of your mouth. Karma should be working its way in preparation to see that the suffering of others is kept to a minimum. This is a carefree, happy go lucky week for you, with all kinds of surprises in store all along the way. You have been dragged down over the past month with none of those clouds bearing you a silver lining, however things are about to change for the best, and you can step up to take the pole position you have long awaited and deserve. Putting others first means it’s OK to think of yourself now! Beware what seems like a better offer may just be because the grass looks greener on the other side. Compromise has seen you take a back seat, but you are about to be shown a distinct alternative of something that could very well be yours for the taking, and sooner than you think. As an acquaintance becomes a friend, just when you need them to be, at last things really are beginning to look up for you. Many have said it, or inferred it, that you have bitten off more than you can chew, but it would seem that you know both where you are and what you are doing better than anybody. Challenging both your reserve and your patience there may not be enough hours in the day but there are reasons to take on what you have to, and here your spiritual gifts are supporting and caring for your every need.

KENNY, I have done something very wrong in the past, something that I am ashamed of. I wonder how I will have any peace when I pass over to Spirit, and whether they will forgive me enough to let me take my space? Brenda H. Brenda, you are focusing on something you did that was very bad, by your own admission. Acceptance into the Spirit World is sure for those who show remorse and those who accept the negativity of their wrong doing. You have to balance things by remembering all the many wonderful things that you have done, and reflect on them instead. In the balance good outweighs bad, and we have all done things that we regret....all of us. Spirit will respect your honesty and welcome you when the time comes!

If It’s Your Birthday This Week

This Week: It is not selfish to want the things that are on your priority list right now, but they do show more than ever your hidden talents. Be unafraid to send out that strong message of your intention rather than just waiting for things to come along!

Success means new home Talented teenager performs at the palace FAST GROWING social network group Costa Blanca Wellbeing has moved home to accommodate its expanding membership.

by CAROLINE TYSZKA A LOCAL British teenage boy is so talented that he was invited to perform at the Elvis Festival as one of the stage dancers at the Benidorm Palace over the weekend. Harrison Leaves-Hele, who is 14 years old and originally from Portsmouth in the UK but now living in Alfaz del Pi, has been dancing since he moved to Spain 6 years ago. He was invited to perform as one of the youngest dancers by Elena Gambi who was arranging the choreography for the Elvis grand finale along with his dancing partner Deborah Peeper, who is also 14, because of his outstanding performance abilities and stage confidence. Starting originally with Theatre Express in Javea at the age of nine Harrison’s parents soon realised that he had a natural talent for theatre performance, but particularly dancing as he travelled to the UK to appear in a west end show about Michael Jackson. Harrison’s mum, Sharon, said “we just knew that he was a natural,” and they moved him to a local dance school run by Hazel Hiles in Alfaz del Pi, where his talent could be nurtured and he could take his professional dance qualifications. Even though his dancing career is still in its infancy Harrison has already attended many prestigious auditions including travelling to London to meet with Warner Brothers who were looking for a young boy to star in The Impossible film with Ewan McGregor. Unfortunately down to the last two the role was given to a boy in London, who is now currently on stage as the new Billy Elliot, so whilst disappointed it is a testament to the high standard of Harrisons talent which continues to grow.

The group will next meet at the Quo Vadis Restaurant in Javea after outgrowing its venue in neighbouring Benitachell. And the next meeting is at Quo Vadis on Thursday 28th April at 11am and the speaker for the Wellbeing Talk is Rachael Martin Founder Debbie Hull said: “Rachael trained as a Bio Energy therapist over 6 years ago and works with people of all ages and illnesses. “As a therapist she scans the body using hand techniques to detect any blockages in the flow of energy. Using tools and techniques she unblocks the flow and in turn the body’s immune system is boosted and naturally heals. When we have trapped emotions, or have had physical injuries, the energies become stagnant.” Bio Energy is suitable for everyone from babies to the elderly and focuses on treating the cause of the illness and empowers people to take control of their health. Debbie added: “Rachael’s background is in clinical research working for over People may recognise the young dancer as he and his sister, 20 years with consultants, teaching and monitoring trials. She believes in Sophia, both performed with the Benidorm circus with Harrison working on the show for three years under the wing of the integrative approach to health.” Email .. the circus leader Sergio. Harrison said: “Performing at Benidorm Palace was like nothing costablancawellbeing@gmail.com I had done before, it was just amazing, I got to work with pro- to register for an invite and to find fessional adult dancers and the response from the audience as out more about the group, www.costablancwellbeing.com. visit we came on stage was simply an unforgettable experience.” If you want to see this young talent in action he will be performing at the Casa de Cultura in Alfaz del Pi with Hazel’s dance school for the show Peter Pan which is being held on 24th June 2016.

A night at the opera By Jack Troughton THE COMBINED talents of Costa Blanca singer Rob Sweeney and Duo Intermezzo achieved a high note for charity on Saturday – raising money for the Alzheimer’s Association of Teulada-Moraira and Masonic charities. Promoted by Magnum Productions and Studio in Gata, the concert at the Espai la Senieta, Moraira, was a crowd pleaser with both acts complementing each other. Rob performed a mix of modern and classic ballads before ending with music from the musicals – and climaxing with a show stopper from Phantom of the Opera. Duo Intermezzo provided a real treat with a balanced mix of ‘Opera Fusion’; the charming set showing off the pair’s devotion to performing – winning several standing ovations. And the fourth fund raising evening in the series is a night with two tribute acts; JJ Jones as Neil Diamond and Andy Wood as Sir Tom Jones. Both a heralded on the club circuit and will be part of a touring show ‘One Night in Vegas’ later this year. The final concert is at the same venue on Satruday 21st May. Tickets are 15€ and available in advance by calling 96 649 9954 or email peter_john@hotmail.com.

Arctic adventure

by Jack Troughton

THE TARDIS and sonic screwdriver will remain at home when the Costa Blanca’s own time lord Victor Pemberton heads north to the Arctic Circle this summer. The television producer and writer – and inventor of the legendary tool used by every actor playing Doctor Who since Patrick Troughton - will climb into his trusty VW in July and start a 10,000km journey. And the creator of two series of the classic sci-fi adventure and script editor for a host of the programmes, Victor remains very much in demand at Doctor Who conventions around the world. In fact, a high-tech gizmo mounted on the dashboard will record the epic journey and the regularly updated film will be posted on websites dedicated to the good doctor. “I am doing a mad thing for my age,” admitted Victor, speaking at his Orba home. “I am driving to the Arctic from here – it’s around 10,000km there and back. “The trip takes me through seven countries and, hopefully, it will be live on YouTube and I will do some sort of commentary. It is quite a journey; the aim is to reach Bodo in Norway, which is around 100 miles into the Arctic.” He added: “I plan to set off on 28th July. If the polar bears don’t get me, I will be back on 28th August. It will be an amazing adventure. “People think I’m a lunatic; they ask why I’m doing it and I say, the old cliché, because it’s there...but I want to do it

before I depart this life!” FRIEND Victor wrote two complete Doctor Who stories for the BBC; ‘Fury from the Deep’ in 1967 with “great friend” Patrick Troughton as the Time Lord, and ‘Doctor Who and the Pescatons’ for Tom Baker in the starring role. The author, he has penned 20 books including a series of 15 novels set in wartime London’s Islington and Holloway, lost his personal and business partner, actor and director David Spenser in 2013. Together they founded Saffron Productions and in 1988 scooped an Emmy and won the New York Film Festival the following year for the Omnibus programme ‘Gwen – A Juliet Remembered’. The documentary featured actress Gwen Ffrangcon-Davies, who played a legendary Juliet in a 1922 version of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, chatting with actor Nigel Hawthorne about her long career. “David was a terrific director and actor, he was the first Just William and we worked very well together both as partners and business partners,” he said. “We lived in this house together for eight or nine years but sadly he died after a long illness.” And in between adventures on the road, Victor is writing his own autobiography and completing David’s unfinished story – scheduled for publication this summer.

First, however, the open road beckons. Victor’s marathon behind the wheel comes after epic journeys exploring Spain and Britain. “I enjoyed them immensely and the Arctic idea came out of the blue...I have had a decent career and just want to this journey.”

He is also credited with having started the Pop Art culture, with the recently stolen Campbell Soup cans leading the genres striking imagery. These works, which belong to a $500,000 collection of 10, were taken from Springfield Art Museum … the FBI is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for their recovery. Tracking back to the ´15 minutes of fame´ thing, with the internet, that is now seriously possible! Who´s a clever boy then!

The Queen was 90 yesterday and it doesn´t seem anytime soon she´ll be vacating the throne. She is the longest serving monarch in British history, but all that tradition has not stopped her from keeping up to date with the world of modern technology. Buckingham Palace’s web site ´British Monarchy, People Magazine Reports´ was relaunched last Thursday with William and Harry both saying “She’s always been conscious of improving the ways we communicate the work of the royal family, she’s been an enthusiastic supporter of social media since the early days of it.” Around 12 million people visit the site each year, so you´d best get that keyboard rattling.

Long may Glasto Lasto!! I´VE NOTICED how over the last decade or so the Glastonbury Festival has evolved into a music event that surpasses all other music events. There is something magical about Worthy Farm where it is held that inspires not only the artists but the audiences as well, resulting in an experience we should all try to be part of. That said, Michael Eavis CBE, 80 year old organiser of the festival for the last 46 years, announced last week that they need to have a fallow year at Worthy Farm to let the land recover, but because he missed it so much in 2012, the last fallow year, he plans to still hold the event, but at another venue. In line with his very individual character, instead of speaking to the nationals, Michael told the Central Somerset Gazette: “I´ve never really considered retiring because I would miss the festival too much, I´m getting too old and I don’t want to miss out on any festivals.” It all began back in 1969 when Eavis and his second wife Jean visited the Bath Festival of Blues and were inspired by seeing the performance of Led Zeppelin. The following year Michael decided to put together the Pilton Pop Festival in the village where he was born, made it a free event, the Glastonbury Fair followed that, and year by year it has evolved into the Glastonbury Festival. Smarting after being snubbed by Eavis, some of the rumour mongering hacks of the nationals suggested he´s getting a bit old for to carry on, but he answered these sorry losers beautifully by saying “I´m very proud of what we´ve managed to achieve over the years, I wake up every morning and get excited just thinking about the festival!” This year’s Glastonbury Festival will be held on the last weekend of June at Michael’s farm in Pilton, and long may it continue. Hip Hip Hoorah! I RECALL hearing ´Hit me Baby one More Time´ in the summer of ´99 and almost melted the CD having it on repeat every time. The ´out there´ video established Britney Spears as a major artist virtually overnight, she went huge, then unfortunately had a mega meltdown in 2006. But enough of that, as Britney has got it back together bigtime, with massively successful live shows in Las Vegas, and now her personal manager Larry Rudolph confirming imminent album release ´Britney Jean´ … it’s got a really interesting vibe, it’s a lot of really cool stuff.” Easy Fellas!

I WOULD imagine Jean-Claude Van Damme might never emerge from whatever hidie-hole he currently occupies in the wake of what took place at LAXX airport last week. Actress/model Cara Delevingne was making her way through the airport and being hounded by the paparazzi and Jean-Claude appeared. In a pathetic attempt to steal Cara´s limelight he called out ‘Excuse me, excuse me, I’m more famous … I’m Jean-Claude Van Damme,’ … really!!, and even worse, you can see him holding his hands out watching Cara and the flock of paps sail past him. Bad Actor! … Bad Loser!

A FEW weeks ago I brought you the story of Sacha Baron Cohen and the making, or not making, of a Freddie Mercury biopic. It said how he didn´t want to make a film that had the lead singer passing on in the middle and the group carrying on to success, and pointing the finger at guitarist Brian May as the root of all the problems. Not to be outdone, last week May spoke to Event magazine and showed he´s clearly not best pleased saying “Sacha became an arse, we had some nice times with him kicking around ideas, but he went off and told untruths about what happened.” Pistols at Dawn?

I´M SURE great cheers rang out across the land, I know Marusia in Folkestone did, when it was announced that a prequel to Keeping Up Appearances is due to air on BBC One in the summer. Entitled ´Young Hyacinth, ´ the show is set in the 1950s, and will follow Hyacinth as she tries to get her family to climb the social ladder … I´m mad for it already! The writer of the original series Roy Clarke is once more in the chair and said “Often, even during the elder Hyacinth’s reign, I would wonder what this formidable mature lady would have been like as a young woman.” I´m even madder for it now!

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

Film Titles Somehow or other at the end of the last article I got on to talking about a film title, that well known classic “El Bueno, El Malo y el Feo”. This got me thinking about film titles in general, which is really a whole subject in itself. If you ever go to the cinema in Spain, or subscribe to some film channels, you will quickly notice that there are some rather creative translations for well known titles, some of which seem logical, and others which are rather strange. Here are a few classics to start with. “Die Hard” in its Spanish version is entitled “La jungle de Cristal” – the glass jungle. Well, that is far enough because Die Hard might be rather difficult to translate meaningfully. Here is the title of the old Hitchcock film “North by Northwest” in Spanish - “Con la Muerte en los Talones” (With Death at your Heels), which is perhaps closer to the action of the film than the original. Sometimes the title is expanded, as in “Ghost” which is translated as “Ghost – La Sombra del Amor” For some reason the word Ghost remains in English, but the information “the Shadow of Love” is added, presumably to make absolutely certain we realize it is a love story. One classic translation which I have never quite understood is that of “The Sound of Music”. That could translate quite easily, but instead it is called “Sonrisas y Lágrimas” (Smiles and Tears). I think a lot of films contain smiles and tears, so it doesn’t really tell us much. Actually, this same film in some South American countries is entitled “La Novicia Rebelde” (the rebellious novice) which puts a different light on it completely, although I’m not sure it does poor old María a lot of justice. One can somewhat sympathize with the need to translate “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”, which is never going to mean much in Spanish. The film therefore is called “Dos Hombres y Un Destino” (Two men and one destiny). Well, you think of something better! That other great classic “Jaws” is called “Tiburón” (Shark) which you can’t really argue with. Some films do translate literally, although somehow the romance gets lost in translation. An

example of this is “Gone with the Wind” – “Lo que el viento se llevó” (What the wind took away). It doesn’t sound quite as good. A film of the same era which keeps its original title in Spanish is “Ben Hur”. The only difference is the pronunciation is something like “Benuur”. Not easy to write, but you perhaps get the idea. This trend to stick to the original title has increased in recent years. An example of this is “Batman”. If it were translated it would be “Hombre Murciélago” but that really doesn’t work. Of a similar ilk is “Spiderman”, although you will usually hear it pronounced “Espiderman”. “Harry Potter” stays as he is too, but sounds very different with a silent “H” and a rolled “rr” in Harry. It was possibly a mistake on the part of the Spanish to keep to the original title of “Shrek”, I say this because I have never yet come across a Spaniard who could pronounce it. The nearest attempt sounds like “Erreck”, rather like “Eric” really, with a different vowel at the end. Of course, famous lines from films also cross the language boundaries. I bet you can’t work out which film “Tócala Sam, tócala” comes from. My favourite one of these is “Soy una máquina” (I am a machine). I used to hear this all the time when I was talking Spanish children years ago. It took me ages to discover that it is a quote from Arnold Schwarzenegger in “Terminator”. Now try and work out how the Spanish would pronounce Schwarzenegger.

First fine in Spain for falsifying data in an energy certificate This is the first effect that I have heard about for falsifying data in an energy certificate. Yes friends, seven months after the of Royal Decree 235/2013, of April the 5th came into force, a decree as you all know requires that all properties that are sold or rented need to possess an energy efficiency certificate and after registering more than 99,000 certificates in the Community of Madrid, they has imposed the first sanction of 4,000 Euros, to a technician for distortion of data in the report that he issued. 4.000€ fine!! The information he gathered for the certificate did not match reality, according to the Directorate General of Industry, Energy and Mines (DGI), which is the agency responsible for the registration and control of these certificate in Madrid. The single-family house was subject to an unexpected visit by the Madrid civil servants and the home which initially scored the highest level “A” was found out that the rating that it really it deserve was a “C”. However, after a selection done by the Madrid DGI based on the highest rating, and checking all the data the civil servants requested the technician the issuance of a new certificate with the correct data introduced and that turned out to be of class “C” and not “A” as he previ-

ously suggested. The inspections done by Madrid DGI have prioritized on certificates scoring “A” or “B”. Homes with ratings “A or B” are first checked. Since this summer, the Community is conducting inspection and monitoring a random number of issued licenses. In these inspections corresponding to the highest energy ratings (A or B) certificates seemed their priority. In this sense, the inspectors first check that the technician posses the enabling qualification of architect, technical architect, engineer or technical engineer. They also check that the technician has actually visited the property in question and verify that the data collected are correct. Inspections are to be more frequent, as they must be done in a significant statistically proportion relative to licenses issued annually. The technician knew very well what he was doing. The sanction imposed is disciplinary, because the fines can range between 300€ and 6,000€, as established by Law 8/ 2013 on rehabilitation, regeneration and urban renewal. For example, to issue certificates without a minimum information is punishable by up to 600 € and to distort the data, as in is the case, can reach 6,000€, as it is considered a very serious offense. Moreover, the sanctioned technician had all the qualifications to issue energy certificates, according to the

DGI so he knew very well what he was doing. The technician who signs the certificate is responsible for its content and accuracy of the same, so there is no excuse to falsify the certificate. The owner is responsible for having the energy performance certificate. We must not forget that the owner is responsible for having the energy performance certificate done, but the content and accuracy of the it, is the responsibility of the qualified technician who signs it, and this was made clear to us during all the relevant course which have done in our Official Colleges to be able to produce these new certificates, (The Colleges are organization working apart from other services to create an awareness to the general public providing additional information and to also provide the necessary training to architects and engineers to produce the certificates). One other interesting information offered by Madrid DGI is that of the 99,000 licenses processed to date, 80.8% were for flats, 11.9% for houses, 3.8% for offices, 1.9% for business premises and the remainder for other uses. Its energy efficiency rating is also uneven: only 0.2% of the certificates have obtained the letter A, while 50.4% obtained the letter E.

HELLP Syndrome What is HELLP Syndrome?

HELLP syndrome is a life-threatening pregnancy complication, the global mortality rate being reported as high as 25%. It is usually considered to be a variant of pre-eclampsia. Both conditions usually occur during the later stages of pregnancy.

What does HELLP stand for?

H (haemolysis, which is the breaking down of red blood cells) EL (elevated liver enzymes) LP (low platelet count)

Signs & Symptoms: Clinical signs: Hypertension Proteinurea

Any of the following symptoms may be experienced: Headache Nausea/vomiting/indigestion with pain after eating Abdominal or chest tenderness and upper right upper side pain (from liver distention) Shoulder pain or pain when breathing deeply Bleeding Changes in vision Swelling HELLP syndrome can be difficult to diagnose, especially when high blood pressure and protein in the urine aren’t present. It’s symptoms are sometimes mistaken for gastritis, flu, acute hepatitis, gall bladder disease, or other conditions. In contrast, when high blood pressure and protein in the urine are present, a misdiagnosis of pre-eclampsia is often made.

Management:

Once diagnosis is made (or a patient has suffered HELLP in a previous pregnancy) care should be led by a consultant obstetrician. Regular pre-natal visits (every 1-2 weeks) are a must. Both maternal and fetal well being will be constantly monitored. During pregnancy, many women suffering from HELLP syndrome require a transfusion of some form of blood product (red cells, platelets, plasma). Corticosteroids can be used in early pregnancy to help the baby’s lungs mature. Ultimately, the definitive treatment is delivery of the baby.

Prognosis:

The most common reasons for mothers to become critically ill or die are liver rupture or stroke (cerebral oedema or cerebral haemorrhage). These can usually be prevented when caught in time. Overall perinatal mortality from HELLP Syndrome (stillbirth plus neonatal death) ranges from 7.7 to 60%. Most of these deaths are attributed to abruption of the placenta (placenta prematurely separating from the uterus), placental failure with intrauterine asphyxia (fetus not getting enough oxygen), and extreme prematurity.

For details of Walking Football, rules, game time, refereeing etc contact Roar at roar@boispania.com or 635 295 102 All we have to do is “Get Involved!” How many teams can we form? Watch this space! The Alfaz Amblers are looking for team members!! There is a similar game quite big in England (some 600 teams)....5 aside with a goal keeper...May be we can combine the two....See you on the Astro Turf!! STOP PRESS!! We have now spoken to Rosa at Almafra and she has agreed we can play WALKING FOOTBALL on St Georges Day......We will form two teams and challenge all comers !! Each challenging team will have to pay 1€ per team member....needless to say ALL the money raised will go to the charities supported on the day. I have already been sponsored to the tune of 10€. If you want to wait for the day, fine but if you want to register your team now, contact Roar ( he speaks Norwegian, English and Spanish) on roar@boispania.com or 637 295 102. Cartagena under 18’s rugby, a hard lesson to learn...well, for Lorca anyway Saturday saw Lorca (unbeaten all season) visit Cartagena (4th in the league) for the last match of the season. Lorca turned up knowing they were the favourites, expecting or rather knowing they were going to win. The problem was that no one had told the Cartagena boys. The look on the Lorca players faces as one of the Cartagena boys, Legaz, intercepted the ball and then ran the full length of the pitch to score the opening try inside the first 5 min-

utes, was priceless. Oh dear, this was not supposed to happen!!! Lorca responded with a try of their own 3 minutes later. This was responded to with another Cartagena try. Scores and the lead then traded places between the 2 teams. Before the final whistle and the win went to Cartagena. Final score Cartagena 17 Lorca 12 The moral, and valuable lesson learnt by the Lorca team.... Nothing is guaranteed, expect the unexpected.

The game was spoilt by Lorca’s lack of discipline. Which included being the instigators of 2 off the ball fights. Then a third fight, again instigated by Lorca, after the final whistle, and whilst the Cartagena team were celebrating an historic win. The weekend of the 21st and 22nd of May will see the under 16’s inter club national finals. Hosted by Murcia, over 20 teams are expected to battle for the national crown. This event is free for spectators so if you want to watch some rugby email peterclarke@roundtownnews.com for details

Alfaz Fantasy Football League by patricia thompson Last week was a busy week for the Alfaz Fantasy Football League with 10 Premier League games and 1 F.A.Cup 6th round replay contributing 25 goals,7 clean sheets,31 yellow cards and 3 red ones. Everton’s McCarthy, top Fox Jamie Vardy and Chelsea’s Courtois all given their marching orders. The Chelsea shot stopper was sent off for the 2nd time this Season (Naughty Boy). There was no change in the top 4 positions of the A.F.F.L. Keith Lard F.C. increased their advantage at the top over Scott’s Dog Dale to an impressive 59 points and with only a few weeks to go his team is in a very strong position. 3rd & 4th placed The Pheonix Club and Plaistow13hammers are chasing hard on the heels of Dog Dale and are only 9 points behind. At the other end of the table Lyn’s Handbrake City are relegation bound and have no chance of catching Alison’s Foxywise. Nathan’s team Tyrannosuarez-Rex F.C.sit a clear 35 points ahead of 2nd placed Super Rhys at the top of our U.K.T.V.SPAIN Junior League whilst at the foot of the table

Bradley’s team Hero to Zero have returned to the relegation zone and are only 29 points above Marcus’s Salford Sausages. In our Mark Carter Ladies Section Maxine’s Plaistow13hammers have taken a giant step forward in their quest to win this Section by taking a formidable 48 point lead over Joanna’s Hup Hannah City.I can’t see the leaders letting their advantage slip so the fight for the runners up spot is between 4 teams,Karen’s Ceasar’s Blackcats,Debbie’s Foxy Filberts and Liz’s White Lions. Liz’s White Lions have swapped places with Jin’s Dream Team at the top of our QUICK SAVE Supermarket Monthly League for a 20 euro voucher with only 2 weeks to go. David’s team Pearson’s Smashers made up ground on James’s Jukeboxers at the Summit of our Leonard Knowles. Construction Golden Boot League and are now only 6 points behind. Both teams have Spur’s Harry Kane and Manchester City’s Hat-Trick Hero Sergio Aguero in their line ups who between them have scored a remarkable 220 Golden Boot points. Both teams will have to keep an eye on Keith Lard F.C. who have sneaked into 3rd place and are only a few points behind the leaders. If it’s tight at the top it’s just the opposite at the bottom where Handbrake City are 58 points adrift of Mark’s team No Bad Losers. Two teams will go into our Premier Imports Monthly Draw for a case of Cava and they are our top scoring team Ian’s Toure-Defoe who rattled up a score of 50 points courtesy of his potent strike force of Aguero,Sanchez and Defoe who scored 30 of that tally. The other team to join them is our lowest scoring team which is Wyn’s Wyndham’s got the Blues and I’m not suprised with

a minus 5 score. Manager of the Month for April is being kindly sponsored by Debbie & Paul at the Our Plaice in the Sun Restaurant in Albir where you can eat in or takeaway their very special Fish & Chips.Jimmy’s team Simple are currently at the top with 2 weeks to go with a 8 point advantage over Andy’s Fred West XI.Bolton Brickies,ToureDefoe and Tyrannosuarez-Rex F.C. are all in the mix for this super meal for 2 at the Our Plaice in the Sun Restaurant. The biggest climbers this week are Ian’s Toure-Defoe who moved up 32 places to 111th position in the main league which qualifies them for a good Olde English Breakfast for 2 at Rafters sponsored by Kate. The 2 teams through to the Final of our RTN K.O.Cup Competition are Dazza’s team The Pheonix Club who beat Stephen’s team Bribed by Blatter and our only Lady manager left in Jeanette’s Jin’s Dream Team who knocked out the favourites Scott’s Dog Dale. The Final takes place on the last Day of the Premier League. After the 6th Round F.A.Cup Replay Ian’s team Tasty Toffees are still top of our RTN F.A, Cup League with a 15 point lead over Frank’s team Parky’s Players. It could change this weekend with the Semi-Finals taking place. With the finishing line in sight it’s important to follow your teams progress right too the end of the Season by logging on to our website which is www.alfazffl.com or if you can’t access a computer you can always pop into one of the bars who show all the League Tables & Results on their Notice Boards. In Benidorm Union Jack, in Albir The Local and Wyndhams, in Alfaz Robin’s Nest and in Moraira Barilloche.

Peugeot Bipper

VAN DIESEL is plastered across a local Ford Transit owned by Virgin Broadband. It always raises a smile and springs to mind as I take delivery of the Peugeot Bipper Professional, the compact city van. This is the first van I have driven and on entering you can’t help noticing that it feels rather hollow inside. In fact if you shout there’s almost an echo due to its capacious rear. The next noticeable difference to a car is the fact that there is no rear view mirror and the distinct absence of a rear window - instead there are two rear doors for easy loading as you can see from the video at testdrives. biz. There’s also a useful sliding side door. You have to rely on your mirrors, making me particularly apprehensive when reversing or pulling out to overtake. I now realise that I should be more forgiving of those van drivers, whom I previously thought pulled out without looking. On manoeuvring to overtake, the driver cannot see anything by looking over their right shoulder, as they would in a car. In time, relying on the mirrors is easy as long as the driver is cautious. There’s a fairly raised driving position, so much so that I spy a

mottled brown roe deer elegantly standing in a field to my right as I wait for the lights to change. In fact height wise it’s on a par with a Land Rover Freelander, giving a commanding view of the road ahead. In many respects this little van, the test model finished in bright red - making me feel like Postman Pat - is very much like a car to drive. Its dashboard has been well designed, with plenty of space for all that

paperwork so often carried by delivery drivers. There are electric windows, a CD player and a decisive five-speed gearbox coupled to a gutsy 1.4-litre diesel capable of travelling over 600 miles on a tank, if driven at a steady 56mph. More realistically it is good for 500 miles at a decent pace. We’re not just talking about economy either but strong load carrying abilities. It’ll shift up to 590kg of cargo measuring as much as 2.5 cubic metres. So that’s plenty of parcels, as colleagues at work keep pushing my way… “The rear wheel arches are one metre apart and Bipper’s low loading height, optional sliding side doors and wide access make packing and stacking heavy goods easier,” write Parkers, the vehicle experts. There’s a hardwearing wood finish inside the rear of the test van. The increasingly popular Bipper is keenly priced and efficient. New price range: 14,487€– 19,482€ Economy: 63mpg Power: 68bhp Top speed: 95mph Watch the video at: www.testdrives.biz

Watch Your Speed!

The European Traffic Police network, TISPOL, will be carrying out a special vigilance campaign against speeding motorists from this weekend, which means that the European road network will see an increase in patrols of traffic police looking for speeding motorists.

Extra mobile speed checks will be in place around Spain, especially on roads which are known to have more incidents than others, such as main roads. According to the DGT, inappropriate speed was a factor in 10% of the 89,500 injury incidents during 2013, a figure that rises to 17% when filtering out incidents to only include those on the main roads. In fatal incidents, excessive speed was a contributory factor in 22% of all incidents. Therefore, according to the DGT, if all vehicles were travelling at the right speed, a quarter of those killed, around 400 people, would still be alive and 1,680 incidents would have been avoided. All roads have speed limits, generic or specific, and if this limit is exceeded then a driver, if detected, will be punished. But even if a vehicle is driving below the allowed maximum limit, external circumstances such

SECOND HAND CARS

as rain or ice, or vehicle characteristics such as using an emergency wheel can alter what is an appropriate speed to drive at. The Road Safety Laws dictate that a driver must respect the speed limits and adapt the vehicle´s speed so as to allow it to stop in its field of view, taking into account any obstacles or hazards that might present themselves, taking into account their physical and mental conditions, characteristics and condition of the road, vehicle load, weather, traffic and other circumstances. That is the safe speed. The faster your car is travelling, the more distance and time it will take to stop. Stopping distances consist of two parts, reaction time and braking time. The average reaction time is between 1 and 1.5 seconds, during which time the vehicle is continuing towards a potential hazard at speed. The faster the vehicle is travelling, the more distance it will cover in this time. Reaction times can be altered by other characteristics such as distraction, alcohol or drugs, or other factors. The actual braking distance then depends on the speed of the vehicle, as well as other factors such as the road and weather conditions, condition of the vehicle and brakes, the age of the vehicle and the actions of the driver,

amongst other factors. In wet conditions, the stopping distance is doubled. In icy conditions, in the case of ice, stopping distances can be up to ten times that of normal, optimum conditions. Reducing speed not only allows for more reaction time and an increased chance of stopping, it also reduces the damage in the event of a collision, possibly even making the difference between life and death in many cases. According to the 2004 Nilsson report, a decrease of 1% of the average

speed on a road produces a 4% reduction in fatal crashes. In addition, it is argued that a reduction of 10 km / h of speed limits would imply a reduction in mortality of around 10%. Although traffic police will be out in force monitoring speed, it is in everybody´s interest to be more vigilant and respectful of the limits put in place, not only by means of the signs on the road, but also the signs that indicate the factors that may mean the need to slow down is greater.
