A word from JT RED FACES at RTN towers after a mix up over dates on last week’s front page. Accidents can happen and errors can creep in. Thanks for all the messages of support, as they say: onwards and upwards. A lifetime ago I was with a press colleague at a legal party in London. A dapper gent came up and introduced himself as “Woolf, Lord Chief Justice.” Now Baron Woolf, he was in offi ce as the most senior judge in England and Wales from 2000 to 2005. He was very interested in how the press actually made so few howlers, and was quick to point out how in law, a mistake, if you will a human error, does not invalidate the whole story or even make it wrong. It would have been useful to have had a quick word with ‘Harry’ Woolf during the week as RTN was suddenly accused of printing ‘blatant untruths’ on social media by an almost hysterical rival. Professional newspapers do not make a public song and dance when something goes wrong in another’s pages – OK there might be a lot of leg pulling and laughter behind closed doors; but it simply isn’t done. Why? Because it is acknowledged gremlins can get in the works of any media outlet at anytime and we are all human.

Enjoy the read! JT GOT A STORY?

Laura given her wings by Jack Troughton SINGLE MUM Laura Aldridge has been given the opportunity to broaden her business horizons through media training with a specialised adult teacher. Charity Guardian Angels – which supports single parent families on the Costa Blanca – has awarded Laura, from Benidoleig a grant to study with educator Karla Daracos. Laura, who also has a passion for painting, will use her award to take some of the courses offered by Karla, from Benitachell. These include business development, website development, digital photography, poster and flyer design, marketing theory and internet marketing. The aim is to help her launch her own personal enterprise and commercial base while generating much-needed

revenue. “I applied for this programme because I knew that Karla was a media educator,” she said. “Karla trains people on how to set up their own websites and she knows what she is talking about. I feel comfortable working with her and know that I will learn well – with her.” Gill Somers, Vice President of Guardian Angels, said members had to apply before the award of any training programme. “We open up our training initiatives to all our members, and, if they are interested, they have to fill in our application form. “Applications are assessed at committee level. If the application is approved, we can go ahead and organise with the service provider and the member.” The training leads to a practical solution – according to a Chinese proverb: “Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach him to fish, he eats for life.” Canadian-born Karla has lived on the

Costa Blanca since 2001 and has been teaching multi-media skills since 1990. “Because Laura is an artist, I have a clear vision of her dream. I can see it too. “I will teach her the knowledge and the tools she needs in order to take a step-by-step approach to manifesting her dreams and hopefully this will aid in her financial situation.” Laura’s website is www.LauraAldridge. info, for more information about Guardian Angels go to www.Guardian-Angels.es, and to learn more about Karla and her courses, go to www. Karla Daracos.com or call 648 156 066. Pictured (from left) are Gill, Laura, and Karla.

Missing EgyptAir flight MS-804 WRECKAGE DISCOVERED in the Mediterranean Sea yesterday (Thursday) was believed to be from missing EgyptAir flight MS-804 which vanished flying from Paris to Cairo.

An EgyptAir aircraft Contact was lost with the airliner at 00.30am GMT as the plane was 10 minutes into Egyptian airspace some 40 minutes from touchdown with 66 people on board, including one Briton, reported to come from South Wales and the Foreign Office is providing support to his family. The plane was at 37,000ft and no distress call was made prior to the jet disappearing from air traffic control radar. It is understood the aircraft began to make “sudden swerves” – lurching 90 degrees to the left before plunging 15,000ft; contact lost as it dropped to 10,000ft. Flight MS804 had taken off from Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris at 9.09pm GMT on Wednesday evening and was scheduled to land at Cairo Airport at 1.15am GMT yesterday. Greek civil aviation authorities reported the jet disappeared off its radar two minutes after leaving its airspace but before it van-

ished, the pilot had spoken with air traffic controllers and no problems were reported. The Airbus A320, which was 13-years-old and had logged 48,000 flight hours, was about three hours and 40 minutes into its four-hour journey. A former air investigation expert believes the lack of any emergency from the cockpit suggested “a brutal event”. Officials say it is too early to rule out any possibility for the plane’s disappearance; including terrorism or technical failure. However, all passengers and crew are feared lost. French President Francois Hollande said “unfortunately” the information “confirms to us the plane came down and is lost”. He said the search was focussed near the Greek island of Karpathos. And the Egyptians underlined that no security issues were known about anyone on board the flight but further checks were being made.

Marching on Together Despite having planning permission, the bulldozers moved in and demolished their home in 2008. The Priors have yet to receive any compensation for the loss of their house or their ongoing ordeal. Organised by home owners’ association AUAN – Abusos Urbanisticos Almanzora No! President Maura Millen said the reason for the demonstration in Plaza Mayor was an appeal for the authorities to “once and for all to find a way to put an end to the ordeal of Helen and Len Prior”. The group also want changes in the law to bring greater certainty to the property market to help restore confidence. Mrs Hillen said the Land Registry should include everything affecting property, including planning matters. She said this was “in order to avoid the situation where an innocent purchaser buys a house which appears to be perfect according to the Registry…only to find the house is illegal and even subject to a demolition order.” Mrs Hillen addressed the crowd, as did Helen Prior and a number of other speakers, including Mayor Felix Lopez and lawyer Gerardo Vasquez. RTN contributor Lenox Napier said: “It went very well but we could always do with more people to really make our point. “The town hall says it wants to do something to help the Priors; we will have to wait and see.”

Weathering the storm BY LENOX NAPIER

HELEN AND LEN Prior are determined not to give up in their fi ght for compensation after watching their Almeria home fl attened by bulldozers in 2008 – catapulting them into the international spotlight. Instead of settling back into a happy retirement in southern Spain, the 72-year-olds live in the garage on their 10,600 square metre property, using Len’s skills a handyman to help make life bearable. They say they will never give up. And yesterday (Thursday) the Priors were out on the streets again, demonstrating for justice in a protest organised by home owners association AUAN – Abusos Urbanisticos Almanzora No! – and backed by expats and people from the town of Vera. Speaking ro RTN, they said“The AUAN is an absolutely fantastic organisation, not supported enough by the British. They should join in. There are only about 300 households which are members, protecting 12,690 ‘illegal houses’ in the Almanzora Valley. Those people should support the AUAN, who are the only people working around the clock on this. “We know the protests all make a difference. In fact the Government even changed the law, to make it illegal to demolish a home ‘bought in good faith´. We were there in the Cortes in Madrid when the vote went through. It was a great moment for us. The leader of the AUAN, Maura Hillen deserves a medal for all her work.” And asked what it was like to be some of the most famous expats in Spain, Helen and Len said: “We get letters sometimes, some nice ones, off ers of support, but also some hate mail…’we can’t sell because of you’ says one. These people have their heads in the sand. “We had a licence from the town hall to build our house, the ‘go ahead’ from the lawyers, from the notary. Then they just ‘revoked´ the licence and our house was suddenly ‘illegal’.” The Priors remain in the news both in Spain and internationally. “We were on ‘Rip-off Britain’ with Angela Rippon recently. A Japanese TV crew Tokyo was here the other day, they managed to dub our comments into Japanese…we have been seen and heard and written about al over the world.” And despite their experiences, the Priors still enjoy their lives in Spain. Helen said: “The Vera people are lovely. Once, an old fellow put his arm around my shoulder and asked if we had enough to eat. The local people are always solicitous and are on our side. “Not so much the foreigners – some of them blame us for not being able to sell their house – like we should have kept quiet and just disappeared.” And they bravely state: “We never did anything wrong. No black money, all taxes paid. That is why we have fought so hard. Imagine a thing like this happening in the US, or German, or England.” At present there could be a five year wait for compensation. Asked if they could continue the fight, they replied: “We have suffered around 200,000€ in costs over eight years and it looks like it will take longer and cost more. The house itself is obviously worth nothing although we spent so much on it, so much in the garden. If only they would give us another licence, to rebuild. “They won’t admit they made a mistake. New houses are being built next door. Other homes around here now have their licences back – with the settlement from the court, we could rebuild here. “Our grand-daughter has a law degree in England. She says the family will fight on. Young people have energy and parental support and they don’t mind a long fight; it’s harder for old people.”

Mosquito fighting drones in Alfaz del Pi by Caroline Tyszka ALFAZ DEL PI has followed in the footsteps of other towns and begun a preventative campaign against tiger mosquitoes using drones. The town hall has also printed 3,000 brochures detailing how to prevent the mosquito from breeding, this will run in conjunction with having drones fly over residential and business properties. The drones will locate places that have stagnant water such as in pools and plant pots, as well as standing water from leaking pipes where the tiger mosquito breeds, and produce a map of risk areas. Councillor for Health, Dolores Albero said: “Finding localised hot spots of breeding for these insects so we can control their proliferation is vital.” Mr Albero said that it was important to “educate the residents of possible breeding areas within their homes” in trying to reduce the increasing numbers of the tiger mosquito.

The Full Monte DEDICATED FANS of CD Montesinos football club are celebrating the launch of a beer named after the supporters’ club ‘The Full Monte’ with a big ‘cheers’. by Jack Troughton

A beer from the Celaya Brewing company in Guadalajara, near Madrid, is launching a new bottled beer in the Vega Baja town. Football supporter and journalist Andrew Atkinson has brought a new meaning to the phrase ‘a game of two halves’ after contacting Fernando Celaya – it followed reading how the brewer was on a special course in England. “I contacted Fernando in Guadalajara having read an article in the in the ‘Ale cry’ CAMRA – Campaign for Real Ale – magazine. From that we have come together to brew beers for CD Montesinos supporters,” explained Andrew. Fernando, who is brewing arrange of special beers with his son Rodrigo, said they were working on a “bitter style recipe” and added: “The beers will be ready in the last days of May, and bottled thereafter, with the label ‘The Full Monte Supporting CD Montesinos.” The official launch of the beer range will be in July and Fernando and Rodrigo have been invited along with Los Montesinos Mayor Jose Manuel Butron and other guests. A spokesperson for Tiger Aspects Productions confi rmed “due to Tim needing time to recover, he has now been written out of the rest of the series, but is making good progress.” The 64-year-old actor, who plays Lesley on the show, received well wishes from close fans and friends ever since falling ill a month ago whilst filming in Benidorm. Tim was airlifted back to the UK last Saturday after his health improved and it was decided that it would be better for him to fully recover in his own home.

Conman walks streets CONVICTED CONMAN Norman Fowler wanted by police in the UK for a £21,000 scam has been freed on bail from a Spanish jail over gun offences. by Jack Troughton The 38-year-old fugitive fled the UK in 2014 and was sentenced to nine months jail at Norfolk Crown Court for theft of camera equipment in his absence. However, he was found to be living on the Costa Blanca and using an alias. Since January, he has rented a home in Pedregeur but was arrested by the Guardia Civil last month on unrelated firearm licensing matters and remanded in custody. Released on bail this week by Spanish authorities, Essex Police say a request for European Arrest Warrant had been made to extradite Fowler, who last lived in Colchester, back to Britain to face justice. A spokesman for the force said: “The officer in the case has been in contact with the relevant authorities to expedite the request.” It is understood that Fowler is also wanted by police in Essex and Norfolk for fraud involving at least nine other victims. Videographer Thomas Tailford, from Norfolk, rented the camera equipment to Fowler in 2012 after being contacted by him via internet sales site Gumtree. The equipment was never returned and no fees were ever received. Mr Tailford set up a website to expose him and a number of other alleged victims got in contact – he said he was “devastated” to lose the equipment and “disappointed” when Fowler evaded justice. And he criticised the slow response by the British police after a BBC programme highlighted the story after Fowler’s April arrest in Spain. He said: “Obviously I’m frustrated again thinking that Norman Fowler could abscond again and feel the police should really have been in touch with the authorities in Spain to advise he has a previous record of evading.”

Missing Brit found in Spain by CAROLINE TYSZKA MATTHEW GREEN who went missing from his home six years ago has been found alive and well in Spain. The British man aged 32, disappeared from his home in Sittingbourne, Kent in May 2010 having said he was going to London to meet some friends. Matthew was found when Spanish authorities became concerned about his welfare. He was asked several questions, including his name, which came up on a missing person database. In an ironic twist, data protection laws meant that his parents Jim and Pauline Green could not automatically be put into contact with their son. Jim told reporters that it was a heart-stopping moment when they were told the news. “When we got the knock on the door and the offi cer said it’s about Matthew but it’s nothing to worry about, my heart nearly stopped. We didn’t know what to say or do.” A positive match was found for Matthew was found after an earlier DNA test taken by Spanish social services. “They got in touch with Interpol and they carried out a fi nger print match and the match was 99.9 percent accurate. Everything has snowballed from there. The Greens appeared on Wednesdays edition of

ITV´S This Morning programme. The couple told presenters Holly Willoughby and Philip Schofi eld the family’s nightmares began years earlier when Matt was accused of a serious crime he didn’t commit. The false allegation set him off on a downward spiral. Matt started drinking and taking cannabis. He stopped socialising and stayed in his room.In 2008 he was diagnosed with psychotic paranoia, the pair told the programme. It was just two years later that the troubled young man disappeared for six years. Matt’s mum Pauline told how the rollercoaster of emotions from the last few days peaked with an email from someone claiming to be a medic treating their son in Spain. She said: “This person texted me last night and it was a Spanish number. He or she said they needed to contact me. “They said ‘I am trying to send an email, but it’s not successful. I sent him my email address and heard nothing, so I went to bed. “Just after 5am I thought I would see if this person had tried to contact and that’s when I saw this email.” She said it proved the power of the media. At this time what plans the couple have for going over to Spain for a reunion with Matthew are not known.

Alberto close to chequered flag THE RACE to get 10-year-old Alberto a set of wheels – specially adapted to take his wheelchair – is approaching the finish line. by Jack Troughton The youngster suffers a neuromuscular disease and needs transport to get around but mum Jessica Molina Romero struggles to get her son into the existing family car. And as reported in RTN, ‘Alberto’s Fund’ was launched to buy the Denia family a second hand car fitted with a ramp to help. Appeal organiser Theresa Banuls revealed this week a magnificent public response meant there would soon be enough cash to buy a new car. “We planned to buy a second hand car but realised the difference between new and second hand was very little.” The Alberto Fund is staging a Music Festival on 28th May in Javea, it is hoped the proceeds from the day com-

bined with existing pledges of cash will be enough to reach the target. “Everyone has been absolutely wonderful,” said Theresa. “This started out as an appeal to find some holiday accommodation for Alberto and his family after he was ill last year and it has just snowballed. “We collected the money people offered to help them have a holiday and then realised the transport situation and thought we could put donations towards a car – the whole thing just continued to roll. FEAT “And we now find ourselves with almost enough for a new car. It’s no mean feat.” Theresa said the reaction to the appeal, launched across social media, was “very positive”. “Complete strangers have come together to work on this – I have met people

who will certainly remain friends afterwards. “It has been hard work but pretty incredible – people have felt compelled to help and get behind the cause. It is amazing.” The Music Festival is taking place at Laguna Ribs next Saturday between 1pm and 8pm. Playing live are Stewart Collier, A Dream In, Mr Pink, The Freuds, and Hangover Tuesday. Tickets are 15€ including a barbeque – children under 15 go free and kids meals will be available – and 10€ from each ticket goes to the fund. And the tickets are available in advance from Secure Storage, Ondara, Lenceria Susan, the Original Charity Shop, Laguna Ribs, and Heaven Boutique, all in Javea. The fund is also running a raffle which will be drawn on the night. Tickets are 2€ and the prize is a luxury weekend for two at the Marriott Hotel.

Hope for EMAUS home

THE RELLEU EMAUS home may get a reprieve as the Department of Equality and Inclusive Policy appears to have reached an agreement with the receivers to keep the facility open. It is reported that the department met in Valencia on Tuesday with the regional secretary of the Social and Personal Council and the receivers and it was agreed that the centre could continue to remain open even though the bankruptcy procedure continues against the EMAUS group. The CCOO union, who represent the workers at the Relleu Foundation home, is said to have confirmed that negotiations had reached a positive result despite previous failed attempts to get the Government to agree to maintain the facilities and ensure that staff were paid. The EMAUS group faces debts of around 20 million euros, with many of the homes being staffed by workers who have not been paid for several months.

“Scooter” campaign goes up a gear by Caroline Tyszka THE POLICE in Benidorm have followed the lead set by a local hotel chain and begun quizzing riders of mobility scooters. RTN has championed the responsible use of the mobility aid, intended to help those less able get around as much of the resort as possible. However, many of the scooters are hired to young and able bodied people as a cheap form of travel. Police officers have been stopping members of the public where the scooters were not being used correctly, in particular where children were being carried on them and several fines were issued. Councillor for Public Safety, Lorenzo Martinez, has confirmed over two weeks six scooters were confiscated for improper use in addition to the fines being issued. The campaign follows a hotel chain’s public and controversial decision to ban any mobility scooters within their nine hotels in the resort. The Servigroup cited the dangers of the increasing amount of scooters parked at the resort premises and said higher numbers meant hotel

San Bartolome Street, in the heart of the commercial area and close to the promenade, was adorned with bright flowers as businesses set up trade stands to sell their products and produce last Saturday. David Ramirez, Councillor for Trade, explained the event was established in order to coincide with the feast of San Isidro during which the area has an increase in tourists. Visitors were treated to various activities such as a Zumba class, a dog parade, and magical shows for the children which enabled families to make the most of the good weather. Local businesses reported that trade had been good although the morning had been quieter than anticipated. Hotels prepare for the season by CAROLINE TYSZKA AS MANY of the Benidorm hotels reopen for the summer season, the Don Pancho on the Avenida Mediterraneo has opened its doors following a complete refit. The hotel, popular with Spanish tourists as well as other nationalities, was closed whilst the accommodation into a modernised establishment with a fresh up-to-date look. For months cranes and scaffolding had shrouded the hotel whilst the works were carried out. The owners also refitted another of their Benidorm hotels, the Orange. The reform for the Don Pancho took six months and this week the 17 floor building was

opened to the public to show off renovated rooms, lounges and pool area this week. Meanwhile, the Dalmatas hotel is also undergoing some major changes which will include a new name “Port Benidorm”. The works, valued at 13 million euros, are expected to be completed within the month with a planned grand unveiling on June 24th 2016. And work on the new Terra Mitica hotel, scheduled to open this summer, is progressing well and will give guests some stunning views looking down onto Benidorm as well as easy access to the theme park. Many of changes have enabled hotels to upgrade their star status. Most have been able to go from a standard 3 or 4 star rating to one star more.

Altea continues with beach improvements

THE ALTEA council is continuing to improve the infrastructure of its beaches with relevant departments meeting to discuss the finishing touches last week. The Mayor of Altea, Jaime Llinares, visited the area accompanied by other councillors and representatives from the municipal and Coasts department to finalise what type of materials would be used for the new lighting and walkways. Amendments to the original plans have included making the area more accessible for users and improving the environmental materials to be used. The company Baldosa, who have already worked on parts of the walkways, have been selected to continue in the same style although the new works require some minor changes to improve pedestrian safety, such as increasing the grip that can be affected during wet conditions.

Arrests over Ukraine murder RTN...Costa del Sol by Caroline Tyszka GUARDIA CIVIL officers have arrested a couple in Alicante wanted for murder in the Ukraine in 2015. The couple identified as VO aged 54 and his wife OU aged 56 and both Ukrainians, were caught as part of a joint operation between the Guardia Civil and the National Central Bureau of Interpol in Spain.

Operation Osypenko involved several weeks of investigation until eventually the two fugitives were located and arrested in the town of El Campello, Alicante, where they lived in a rented property. The couple are accused of robbing Svitlana Mykolayivna Tabolina, director of a Ukrainian pharmaceutical company, before murdering him with a hammer on August 27, 2015 in Buzova, Ukraine and throwing his body into the river Zamhlay in a nearby town.

LAST WEEKEND your favourite weekly newspaper took giant steps into the Costa del Sol and the Costa Tropical (Axarquia). Having recently launched a brand new edition, the Mia Media Group owners have been keen to bolster their ranks with yet more expansion, bringing the expats of these areas what they already deliver to the Costa Blanca, Costa Calida and now the Costa de Almeria. Managing Director Daniel Wilkinson said “Last weekend was a very successful business trip for RTN, this area has been on our radar for some time and, as some people will know, we have previously launched a paper here. At the time we didn’t feel we had the right people in charge of managing it properly so we made the decision to ‘get back to the drawing board’. “After the takeover of RTN, we decided to grow step by step, this was my family business for 16 years after all, I wanted it to grow. “We started this move in May 2015; studying distribution points, doing market research with businesses and people who knew the area and we now feel there is a gap in the market for us to launch RTN. “The response we have had has been

phenomenal, and I am extremely pleased to tell you a launch date is imminent.” RTN readers should stay tuned in over the coming weeks for yet more positive news.

At Albir, he presided over the Eucharist Service with Father Ray and took time over a ‘hasty’ coff ee to chat with everyone before heading south to El Campello for a noon service. On Saturday, the bishop confi rmed six people into the church family at Calpe, drawn from across the large parish. Record breaker dies SCOOTER, THE world’s oldest living cat, sadly passed away days after officially taking the Guinness Book of World Records title. The Siamese from Mansfield, Texas, had celebrated becoming the grand old age of 30 – according to his vet the equivalent of around 136 human years. Dr Tricia Latimer said: “Scooter is quite an amazing cat with a strong will to live.” Sadly, Scooter came to the end of his nine lives shortly after being named as a record breaker. Owner Gail Floyd said: “He was so special...I don’t think I am going to get over this. “He liked to see new places and he liked people. He was active, full of energy and playful.” Born on March 26, 1986, Scooter lived through US President Ronald Regan’s administration and led an eventful life. At just four-weeks-old he lost his mother and in October 2014, he broke his leg and had been undergoing medical testing and treatment ever since, according to the Guinness Book of Records. Scooter had just replaced a cat named Corduroy to become the oldest living feline in the world. Corduroy had taken the crown last August, aged 26 years and 13 days – he might yet be re-awarded the title. However, Scooter was not the Guinness Book of World Records’ oldest cat of all time. Crème Puff, a fellow Texan, from Austin, enjoys that particular honour after living to 38-years-old.

A Weekend of bomb alerts

A FLIGHT bound for the UK was evacuated late Sunday night following a bomb alert. The Ryanair flight which was scheduled to leave Oslo’s Rygge airport on Sunday evening, and was destined for Manchester became the focus of attention as passengers reported that they believed a bomb may be on board. Two passengers on the flight had been seen behaving suspiciously before boarding the flight, having an argument at the airports toilets where others overheard them using the word “bomb.” Anders Stroemsaether, a Norwegian police spokesperson said, “the incident occurred when two passengers were overheard arguing, the captain was informed, he then notified us before the plane was evacuated.” Both passengers were arrested but later released following what is being described as “a misunderstanding” and the bomb squad search found nothing suspicious. A replacement flight was arranged and all passengers arrived safely around midnight. Following the event there was speculation that the passengers had been arguing about an earlier occurrence at Manchester, although this was not confirmed. Earlier in the day a fake bomb was discovered in the toilets at the Manchester United football ground just before their match with AFC Bournemouth at 3.15 pm. The stadium containing 75,000 fans was evacuated and the game cancelled as specialist teams moved in to deal with the suspicious package. It was later discovered that the bomb was a training device used by Security Search Management & Solutions Ltd who were used to help carry out theoretical and practical dog training exercises. The company, which are registered in Kent, were hired for the exercise by United’s usual dog trainers, Deacons Canines. A mobile phone device wired to a piece of piping to give it the look of a real bomb was taped to the back of a toilet door in the north west quadrant of Old Trafford as part of the training drill. However the dummy device was not removed at the end of the exercise and ended up being discovered by a member of United’s staff in the lead up to the kick-off of their scheduled game against Bournemouth. The security company apologised unreservedly for the mistake and the game was replayed on Tuesday evening.

Sweet & sour soul IN THE words of Dexys Midnight Runners - let’s go ‘Searching For The Young Soul Rebels’ – possibly you my faithful reader?

by

Chris Ashley

Writer & Broadcaster

Couple months back I hooked up with an old soul survivor DJ chum. He played the platters that matter at Northern Soul All Nighters. For those not up to speed (which played a large part in the ballroom blitz) Northern Soul is generally a far more frenetic sound than your Motown or Stax. Unlike most dance-a-thons where the female of the species takes centre stage, while the bloke just galumphs along on the sidelines like a rheumatic rhino - HE! comes into his own in the Northern Soul spotlight, slipping & sliding like an elastic eel - carpeting copious amounts of talcum powder on his patch of the dance floor to provide greater dancing footwear traction for the Oxblood Brogues. Unfortunately, after a night of oozing bodily fluids, the talc morphs into a gunk resembling school dinner semolina. Our groovemeister is also wearing flares so wide, when he spins, he’s in danger of whiplash. Playing on the Dansette as I scribble this ramble is an original Tamla Motown 45 by The Temptations (Get ReadyTMG 688) in pristine alphabetically filed nick Yes! yes I know it’s a sad anorak attack, but since I’ve become self-unemployed, there’s not much to fill my day. Sadly the joyous sound the Temptations made was not reflected in their general demeanour as I discovered in the early 70’s interviewing them in Brighton. This was the height of the Black Panther movement and I was, pre-show, the only Honky in the house. The group & groupies had no time for Whitey Ashley – pretty sure I heard asides that Mother was a trucker too – very odd, as she worked in Ye Olde Tea Shoppe in Woebegone Worthing. Ironically,at least 75% of the audience that evening were palefaces. Hells teeth! this was Sussex, not Salem Alabama, by the Sea. We weren’t 2 eyeholes in a pillow case away from joining the KKK. However, in mitigation, the Motown Misanthropes were equal opportunity bigots – they hated each other too. If you have any memories of Wigan Casino, Manchester’s Twisted Wheel, Blackpool Mecca, Stoke’s Golden Torch – or perhaps a far - flung Southern outpost – do email me. While you’re at it how about your best tune? Mine is ‘7 Days Too Long’ by Chuck Wood. Pass the talc – here I go again. Ouch, there goes the knee - strewth and the hip.

Expatriates in Spain ADVANTAGES AND convenience of making a Spanish Power of Attorney. DEAR READERS, We receive many enquiries from older people who either live in Spain or have interests here, who are concerned about what would happen to them if one day they could no longer deal with their affairs themselves and they needed to make arrangements with the bank, or sell a property in Spain, etc.

FOR THESE cases, to try to avoid or prevent problems, it can be very advisable to grant a Power of Attorney in favor of their relatives or other trusted person. General or Special. A Spanish Powers of Attorney could be either general, i.e.: enabling the person you choose, to perform on your behalf, any act permitted in law, such as: manage your assets, investments, real estate, business, etc. Although under Spanish law, there are some acts that are considered “personal acts”, and cannot be done by means of a Power of Attorney on behalf of anybody, such as making a will for example. It is possible to do a Special Power of Attorney, (SPA) in which the representatives are only empowered to perform certain acts on behalf of the grantor, those stated by the grantor as necessary or appropriate, for example you authorize them to manage the bank accounts and pay bills, but not to sell or buy real estate assets, etc. Similarly, you can choose the time when the Power starts to have effect. Some of our clients want the Power of Attorney (POA) only to be able to be used when a doctor certifies that the principal has lost some of their ability or capacity, that is, when he/she cannot do things for him/herself. Other clients want these powers to be used from the first moment until the end. In this regard it should be noted that even if there is a power that provides for the possibility of being used in the case of incapacity of the person who gave it, there would still need to be a process of actually declaring the subject’s incapacity, once they actually became incapacitated. However, with this type of power in place, it has the ability to be used in the meantime, which can be very useful for family and trusted individuals, since it allows them to act and administrate the assets from the very start, before the court case takes place. When making a Power of Attorney, the grantor must be sure of and have full confidence in the person who is going to be chosen as proxy or representative. At any time, a power of attorney can be revoked, however, if for whatever reason the principal no longer wants it to exist. Therefore, to prevent the possible consequences of a situation of short temporary disability or lack of capacity (for example: a long hospitalization, a long stay abroad), or a definitive one, it could be advisable for anyone to grant a Power of Attorney, general or only for those specific faculties desired, in favor of a family member or trusted person of your confidence to help in managing your affairs, rental property or sale, payment receipts, manage bank accounts, etc. It is very important to ensure that power is drafted to meet the individual needs and fulfill the desires of the principal. Could your pension pot be wiped out? We have all heard scare stories about pensions, some of them are a load of baloney and others should send shivers down our spine and make us be more vigilant and aware of the ever present dangers. Over the next few weeks I will highlight the various threats that could potentially ruin your dreams of a happy, financially secure retirement. The first real and present danger are financial scams. Even before flexible drawdown of pensions was introduced by the UK government, people were falling prey to pension scams, the pension freedom for over 55´s has just given scammers access to a much larger potential client base. Even if you are confident you can see through a scam, think again. Citizens Advice recently carried out a survey where it initially asked more than 2,000 people whether they thought they could identify a fraudulent offer. Then it presented them with three mock adverts and asked which they were most likely to pick if they were looking for help with their pension. Some 88% of people who took the survey chose one of the frauds. Among those who had expressed confidence about detecting scams, almost exactly the same proportion, 87%, selected one of these offers. Citizens Advice says that people are particularly at risk of scams from phone calls, post and emails that come out of the blue. It calculates that around 10.9million consumers have received unsolicited contact about their pension in the last year. Among people aged 55-64, some 33% surveyed by Citizens Advice reported being cold-called about their savings since April 2015. “Pension scams are becoming more sophisticated and there are more and more of these firms trying to do it, with cold calls and offers of free reviews. “ The best advice is to avoid these companies and go and see a regulated adviser. The next threat, even though very small is that to Final Salary (Defined Benefit) pensions, this has been brought to the fore again by the BHS headlines, but other notorious cases loom large in all our memories. Remember Robert Maxwell

who stole the pensions of his employees, although they did eventually get most of their money back. Also Equitable Life botched the running of its pension schemes right under the noses of watchdogs, and many of its customers are still paying the price today. If you have a traditional final salary pension and your employer goes bust, the Pension Protection Fund should come to your aid. The Pension Protection Fund is funded by other healthy final salary schemes and under the current rules, if you have already retired, your payouts should be fully protected. If you are coming up to retirement, you should get 90% up to a cap

of £30,000-plus a year. Although there is only a small risk of the above happening, if you are part of a Final salary scheme look at the annual reports you get to see if the scheme has a surplus or is in deficit. If it is in deficit what is the company planning to do to rectify this. Also look at the Company itself, how well is it performing, is it a sound business making money or running at a loss. If you have questions regarding your pensions or wealth management, contact me to arrange an independent, professional and impartial consultation, email christina.brady@ blacktowerfm.com or call me on 658 892 330.

The above information was correct at the time of preparation and does not constitute investment advice and you should seek advice from a professional adviser before embarking on any financial planning activity. by

Dick Handscombe Holistic gardener and author

Why is your vegetable garden struggling? AFTER GROWING vegetables in Spain for over 25 years there are fifteen main reasons as discussed below. Each cause is reversible.

1.Shallow soil.

Seeds can germinate in a centimetre of earth but they will soon dry out and not grow to maturity. Preferably you need 25 centimetres for shallow rooted plants and 50 for deep rooted plants

2.Impoverished soil

Ideally 30 percent of the top 30 centimetres should be mixed in organic matter such as garden compost, worm compost and composted animal manures

3.Roots from hedges and trees

If you try to grow vegetables around the baser of trees or hedging plants roots from these plants will grow horizontally into your vegetables seeking nutrients and moisture and strangle vegetable roots.

4.Weeds

If you don’t weed seed and plantlet beds regularly the weeds with smother the vegetables and reduce their access to the sun.

5.Spasmodic watering.

Stop go growth does not produce good growth or maximise the health and quality of harvests.

6.Too much sun

Vegetables do not need to be in the sun all day long. Excess sun can lead the need for very frequent watering and weak growth if combined with over fertilizing with chemical fertilizers. Also tender varieties can go to seed too fast and fruit vegetables all ripen together leading to short period gluts rather than extended harvesting periods.

7.Poor timing of sowing seeds

For trouble free growth and best storing harvests sow on the three star days indicated in a lunar calendar. Also don’t sow before minimum germination temperatures are reached.

8.Not using seeds suitable to the Mediterranean climate Seeds from vegetables grown in the north of the UK will now grow as well as those harvested around the Mediterranean especially those harvested from your own garden or valley.

9.Stale seeds

Many seeds will lose their germination ability if kept more than a year, others will not germinate well if kept for more than two years.

10.Snails and slugs

Although not as great a problem as in UK gardens they can breed after heavy rains. Play things safe by using light sprinklings of an eco-snail and slug bait.

11.Not using plantlets

Plantlets delegate germination and early rotting off problems to a nursery and crop rotations can be implemented speedier.

12. Fungal attacks

Humid weather and over watering with poor soils can cause the rotting of stems and roots and mildew on leaves and fruit. Seasonal dustings with eco yellow sulphur powder can help as a prevention and cure.

13. Insect attacks

The main insect problems are leaf eating butterfly caterpillars and aphids, especially aphids on cabbages, broccoli and cauliflowers.

14.Wind

Strong winds can break, freeze and dry out young vegetables so shelter your vegetable growing area by hedges or woven windshield material.

15.No one wanting to eat your prize crops Involve the family in deciding what you will grow in terms of what various persons like and what they are prepared to try in order to eat more healthily. Descriptive tables included in the book ‘Living well from our garden Mediterranean style’ will help you make informed choices.

Computer not operating

Hi Aunty, I have a 7-year-old Dell desk top Dimension 3100 and no operating system CD! I am always prompted to install ‘Windows service pack 3’ and when trying to do so I am again asked to insert the CD-rom ‘Microsoft office XP professional with front page’ and if it cannot be found try to find the installation package ‘Proplus MSI’ which of course I cannot find. Service pack 3 is in my list of programs to be installed but I therefore cannot do so and as a result the computer is not operating properly. Thanks in advance for any help. Patrick Aunty says: Some files these days are stored on a hidden part of the hard drive, so no installation CDs are required. And as they are stored in a hidden folder, unless you change the options to see the hidden files and folders, you will not be able to locate the hidden file. To display hidden files and folders: Open Control Panel Open Folder Options in Control Panel. Click Appearance and Themes, and then click Folder Options. On the View tab, under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders. Then do a search for ‘proplus’ and it may find it.

Apps will not open in Windows 8 HI AUNTY VIRUS: I have a problem with my Windows 8, I can only open 2 of my apps on the start screen. Is there a solution? May.

Aunty says: There are many reasons why apps will not open, including:

An antivirus system, like Kaspersky 2013, avast or Macafee , is causing a problem - turn off, or use another AV program. Incorrect screen resolution - all Windows 8 applications requires 1024 x 768 screen resolution at least. Right

click on the desktop, select Screen resolution and go to make changes. If you have turn User account control (UAC) ON, disable this security feature (see link www.thewindowsclub.com/fix-metro-tiles-responding-windows-8 )

Updates affecting internet connection HI AUNTY: I have a laptop operating with Windows 7 and Microsoft Security Essentials. My windows updates were automatically downloaded when I shut down my computer. After this took place and I switched on my computer afterwards, my internet connection was showing ‘disconnected’. Despite trying to fix connection, I could not restore it. The only way I have found to reinstate my connection was to take my computer to a point before the update. I have changed my windows update setting so they are not automatically downloaded to ensure my internet connection is not disconnected but obviously my ‘Windows’ is not up to date. Do you have any suggestions on how I can

download the updates and still maintain my internet connection? Brenda Aunty says: One option would be to make sure you have the up-to-date drivers for your network / Ethernet connection. Failing that I think the only way of seeing which update has caused the problem is by downloading and installing each update one by one and seeing which one causes the problem.Or look down the list of updates, and try to locate one that may change the Ethernet driver settings, and do not install that one. Response: Thank you for getting back to me. I have done what you suggested and identified which update was causing my problem.

Life Coach

WITH A background in family and matrimonial mediation, Life Coach Sara Bell helps Readers with their daily worries. If you are having diffi culties with relationships, family, work or any other aspect of your life, then help is at hand.

Will he ever change? I really like this girl MY PARTNER and I have been together for 3 years. In that time he has had several affairs. On each occasion I suspected something, found proof, and confronted him. Every time he swears he will change. Now I am recognising all the signs again. I have told him how hurt I get, and how worthless I feel. He says he loves me, and that he won‘t do it again. I want to leave but we have two children. They are young at the moment, but I worry they will find out when they are older. Your partner is a serial cheat, and it doesn’t look like he is able to help himself. You’ve given him chance after chance and it’s not getting any better. How can someone say they love you, then disregard how you feel when they cheat? Your children will detect unhappiness between you as they get older, and it can be devastating for them to learn there have been infidelities. Only you can decide whether it is worth staying with this man.

Write to Sara in confidence. A pseudonym will be used if you wish. Sara reads all letters and can give a personal reply. Email your question to agonyaunt@roundtownnews.com or Sara is available for private consultations, telephone 650 054 467.

I REALLY like this girl who works on Reception at my Gym. I don’t know how to approach her - I haven’t got much confidence. I think she likes me because she smiles when she sees me, but I guess she might smile at all the customers, so I am not sure. I don’t want to make a fool of myself. I’ve never had a proper girlfriend. Any advice?

Take it slow - start off by chatting about every day things - comment on the weather, the traffic for instance. Ask her if she has to travel far to get to work, those sorts of things, and build up the conversation each time you go. Use her name when you are talking to her, be friendly but don‘t come on too strong. As you get to know this girl casually, then you will know if she is available, because she may slip in the fact that she has a boyfriend (or not). Then you will know for sure. If she is single, then suggest a coffee after work.

Marcus, do not worry about your meditation, and firstly take all stress away. Only meditate when you feel you need to and try to take away all the pressures. It is very hard to close down, and everybody has had the same problems that you have and have had to adapt in time to ways in combatting this. I will be starting my Summer workshops very soon, and this will include a Meditation class for those just beginning. MEMBERS OF The Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir were joined by guests The Basingstoke Ladies Choir to enthral a capacity crowd at the Salon de Actos, Teulada. The Costa Blanca Choir performed not only its regular favourites but two new pieces

including Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus and The Rhythm of Life; this combined with Basingstoke’s different gender of songs impressed the audience - both choirs performed two encores together. The Costa Blanca Choir finishes its Summer Season with a charity concert on Friday 24th June in aid of charity Make a Smile which supports youngsters cared for by EMAUS. Business backs Lions BUSINESSES HAVE pledged their support to the Calpe and Benissa Lions as they continue to support projects in the community.

by Jack Troughton The club is backed by both the Costa Blanca Business Association – the CBBA represents a number of local businesses – and Blacktower Financial Management International. The CBBA has pledged to sponsor the rental costs of the Lions’ charity shop located on Pintor Sorrolla, Calpe over the month of July. The CBBA is a group of local and legally registered businesses. Alan Goswell, marketing manager, said: “We are happy to support the Lions who do a great deal of good in the areas where many of our business members are based. I am looking forward to a long and fruitful association with The Calpe and Benissa Lions.”

And Blacktower continues it four consecutive years of sponsoring the Lions. Keith Littlewood is an adviser for Blacktower and an active Lion, and says it is a natural coming together for company and the association. Lions Treasurer Malcolm Saunders commented: “This is just the beginning of the Calpe and Benissa Lions trying to encourage local businesses to support charity in this area. “At the same time, they benefit by association with the Lions, its members and everyone in the area who in turn supports us.” Any businesses wanting to add their support can contact Keith, the Lions’ incoming President on 657 684 094 or email keith.littlewood@blacktowerfm.com.

Last week ´Entertainment Tonight’ responded to rumours Christina was to sing duet with the late Whitney Houston, although Christina herself said “I am sworn to secrecy, I can’t say anything, but I’m very excited about it!” We now bring in Hologram USA, who leaked out “a special Whitney hologram will perform at a major US venue” before adding “If all goes well, it could pave the way for the company to take Whitney’s virtual likeness on a world tour.” Well bless ma soul!

THERE´S TWO Lovely ladies in this tale that took place in Beverley Hills recently, a tale that ends with a very interesting video. Goldie Hawn holds an annual event every May called ´Love In For Kids´ and like a good daughter actress Kate Hudson was in attendance, and she´s the one singing in the video ... yes she is! On the subject of Mother’s Day in America, Goldie was quoted in People mag as saying “We’re going to Kate’s, and looking forward to being served brunch by the males in the family, all the guys will be there, and then we’ll all get in bed and eat.” Well bless my cotton socks! Here´s the link. Kate Hudson sings Nothing Compares 2 U (HD Version)

There´s not too much that’s ´social´ about Social Media! I NEVER thought I´d find something that would shake my tree more than the daily horrors of Reality TV, but over the last year or so, slowly but surely, Social Media is now getting my vote as the curse of all that is decent in the world of the home and portable entertainment. The subject matter of what ends up going viral on social media never ceases to amaze me, like ´thigh gaps´ for example, yes you read right, a subject that´s been running hot for more than a year now, and I´ve got quite a rant for you from Iskra Lawrence, a lady from Worcestershire who models size 14 clothes. It’s quite a tale, so I would advise you stock up with tea and biscuits. Iskra first came to the world’s attention on thigh gaps at the end of April when she shared two side-by-side Instagram selfies to demonstrate that anything can be done with the right angle. In snaps taken on the same day, one image shows her thighs touching, the other shows a wide gap. Iskra has always been a huge advocate for embracing your body image, and took it to new heights earlier this year when she blasted an Internet troll who called her a “fat cow.” To combat this outrageous social media bullying Iskra did a selfie of her laying down in her bra and panties, covered in bags of potato chips and posted “This is for anyone who has ever been called FAT!”… Told you it was a bit lively diddle-I. Another time Iskra got stuck into McDonalds with a post that was headed ´Opinions are like a--holes - everyone’s got one. “Everyone needs to stop eating McDonalds,” she started, then went for the jugular adding “and people eat too many chips!” To emphasise this point even more strongly Iskra posted a video of her eating a chip in slo-mo while still showing off her curvy body in her bra and underwear ... kit off again then! Iskra has found quite a following for how she feels about the sorrowful state of Social Media bullying with other posts like “who gives a F what anyone else thinks of you,” and “I hope we can stop labelling people and putting such an emphasis on size when we´re so much more than that,” giving hope to many. Thankfully I´m a non-user. THE HEADLINE-hunting Kardashians have descended upon the island of Cuba, the whole kit and caboodle of them. Their cameras are in full flow, cranking up the ugly moneyspinning pap that’s likely to fatten their coffers even more. But Florida representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who was born in Havana, might just spoil this greed-fest. ”Away from photo shoots and fruity drinks, everyday Cubans experience a different, sad reality “she said “now, the Kardashians are parachuting into the island to tape their vapid TV show. Haven’t the Cuban people suffered enough? How much of the Cuban people’s reality will be in this ‘reality’ show?” I declare this lady ´Woman of the Year!

HAVING STARRED in the last three XMen movies Jennifer Lawrence is right up there in the limelight. Talking to top American television journalist Diane Sawyer last week Jennifer told her about the ending to her relationship in 2014 with X-Men co-star Nicholas Hoult. “I was completely covered in blue in body paint as Mystique in “X-Men: Apocalypse” she said “and Nicholas wasn’t a fan of how I had to remove it with shaving cream, it is really good for taking paint off, but Nick used to hate it because I would come home smelling like a man and, and I was like, ‘Don’t touch me, I’m too tired,’ and he was like, ‘You smell like a dude!” Are you nuts Nicholas?

SHERIDAN SMITH was given the role of Cilla Black in in ITV´s ´Cilla´ in 2014 because she was a top actress, and received many accolades for her work, winning a National Television Award for the performance. Sadly all that high octane praise has somehow got lost behind the wardrobe in the wake of Sheridan´s recent meltdown at the Savoy Theatre where she was portraying Fanny Brice in Funny Girl. Even more sadly Graham Norton got on her case saying ´Funny Girl was cancelled 15 minutes in due to technical difficulties, though audience members claimed she was slurring her words and accused of her being drunk. Shame on you Graham!

The Butterfly Zoo in Nijar by LENOX NAPIER THERE’S NOTHING as sublime in life as being surrounded by butterflies. Red ones, some a beautiful shade of green, large Mexican turquoise butterflies, orange fritillaries from Siam. A modest zoo in Nijar holds these and many others inside a reserve, a large greenhouse with a garden, a pond, flowers, some benches, soft piped music and a wonder of butterflies. The butterflies dart about, except for the big Mexican fellows – they’re called Blue Morphos, who seem to flap so slowly as they spin through the air, they could be swimming. It was wondrously relaxing. I felt like a character from Alice, perched on a mushroom and (figuratively) wearing a felt hat and smoking a hookah. On hand were three women to explain the story of the Mariposario de Nijar. They speak Spanish, French and English. They look after their charges, providing bowls of sugar-water and a soft spray to keep the atmosphere moist. One of the women is an ‘educator’, who looks after the young children who visit, keeping them both out of trouble and armed with paper and crayons. Another does brief tours around the greenhouse, here showing a butterfly laying eggs, there showing a couple mating. Outside, in the gift shop, a Frenchwoman showed me some charming butterfly-themed pottery. I would have asked them more about the butterfly zoo, but I was too enchanted, and instead asked to borrow a crayon. The Mariposario is just outside Nijar, on the spur off the motorway. Open every day. The entrance fee is 8.50€ and down. They say in their leaflet: ‘The butterfly is like Happiness. If you seek it, it will remain beyond your reach; but if you sit quietly and wait, it will come and settle on your shoulder’. Nice. Go visit!

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

The Rhythm of Speech Throughout this series of articles I have often talked about where the “beat” goes on a word, and how important that is to allow us to understanding what is said. It is surprising how little attention is often given to this subject, considering how fundamental it is. You have almost certainly been a victim of this problem in your daily life, without even realizing it. An early experience of mine was when I asked a chemist for “paracetemol”, which I pronounced with an English rhythm, like this “paraCETamol”. I had remembered to make my “c” into a “th” and all my vowel sounds were correct, but there was still something the chemist couldn’t understand. He stared at me blankly while I repeated the word several times and then said “Ah sí, paracetaMOL”. Well, that’s what I said, wasn’t it? How difficult is it for a chemist to understand such a basic word? I’ll bet you’ve been in very similar situations. Often the correct version which the barman or chemist repeats back to you sounds exactly the same to you, and to be honest, when we’re talking about beer in a pub, or pain killers in a chemist, what exactly is their problem? The problem, ladies and gentlemen is “beat”, “stress”, “emphasis”, “rhythm” – whatever you want to call it. Getting it in the right place is fundamental to understanding, even when the situation almost speaks for itself. What follows might seem like a digression from learning Spanish, but believe me, if you stick with it, and take it on board, it could transform your ability to communicate, and ultimately to your understanding of the spoken word as well. A very important thing to realize is that every word has its own rhythm, and it is this rhythm that makes the word recognizable even when we can’t hear every sound clearly. Let’s look at a few examples in English to make the point: “reject”, “record”, “present”, “refuse”. As they are written here, you as English speakers have no way of knowing how they should be

pronounced. For example “I reject your offer”, “that product is a reject”. Now say “reject” in both ways and notice what the difference is between them. You will find that it is essentially the “beat” on the word. “I reJECT your offer”; “This product is a REject”. In English we have the additional complication that the beat alters the vowel sounds, something that does not occur in Spanish. Now do the same sort of exercise with the remaining three words, and then with the dozens of others in English which do exactly the same thing. Sorry to be laborious about this, but your next step in the experiment is to imagine hearing one of these words mispronounced by a foreigner in an obvious situation. Let’s say we are watching some sporting achievement and someone tells us it is “a reCORD”, or there is some rubbish on the ground and we hear “look at all this awful “reFUSE”, or even better “My father is a reFUSE collector”. Now let’s return to Spain and Spanish. Every Spanish word has a rhythm, and unlike English, there are very precise rules as to how this rhythm works. As foreigners we all have a nonSpanish accent to a greater or lesser extent, and we all have ways of saying things that aren’t exactly the same as native speakers. In addition to this we pronounce the most important word in the sentence with the wrong emphasis, and hey presto, the barman doesn’t know we want a beer, and the chemist can’t recognize a basic word for painkiller. Now all we need to learn are rules for correct word emphasis.

The programme consists of Beethoven’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No 4, and his Sinfonia No 5. Concerts Costa Blanca President Wilhelmina Hardee says if this combination of a world class soloist, brilliant conductor and orchestra playing the music of arguably the greatest composer of all time does not win new fans of classical music “nothing will!” On Thursday 2nd June the concert is at the Auditori de Deputacion de Alicante, on Friday 3rd June, at the Auditori de Teulada-Moraira, and on Sunday 5th June at the Palau de Musica, Valencia. Prime rib of beef with Béarnaise Sauce

Whether you’re grilling prime rib for the first time or the hundredth, you can ensure a mouth-watering meal by following our tried and tested recipe below. Ingredients 8 lb prime rib of beef, rolled and tied 2 cloves garlic, minced 6 tbsp Dijon mustard 1 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp fresh thyme, chopped 1 tbsp freshly ground black pepper Béarnaise Sauce 2 tbsp tarragon vinegar 2 tbsp white vinegar 1 tbsp water 2 small shallots, minced 1 tsp dried tarragon 1/4 tsp freshly cracked black pepper 3 egg yolks, at room temperature 3/4 cup butter, cubed, at room temperature pinch salt dash cayenne pepper Directions 1. In a small bowl, combine the garlic, mustard, olive oil, thyme and pepper. 2. Pat the beef dry with paper towels, then spread the prepared mustard mixture over the surface. Let stand at room temperature for 1/2 hour. Meanwhile, prepare the barbecue by placing a drip pan under the cooking grids. Fill halfway with hot water, then preheat the barbecue on MEDIUM. Adjust the heat to MEDIUM/LOW, and place the prime rib on the

cooking grids. Close the lid, and cook about 15 minutes per pound for medium rare. Using a meat thermometer to check doneness is a must. An initial check after an hour or so will give you a chance to assess the timing of the other dishes. 3. Closely monitor the level of water in the drip pan, ensuring it never runs dry. Very carefully add hot liquid to the drip pan as necessary, taking care to protect your hands with oven mitts to prevent steam burns. 4. When the meat is almost at the desired doneness, remove the roast from the barbecue and place it on a carving board

tented with foil. Let it rest 20 minutes before carving. Refer to the Indirect Cooking Guide 5. Béarnaise Sauce: In a small saucepan, combine vinegars, water, shallots, tarragon and cracked black pepper, and bring to a boil over MEDIUM/HIGH heat until reduced to one tablespoon. Reduce temperature to LOW and whisk the egg yolks into the reduction. Whisk in the butter one cube at a time, waiting until the butter is incorporated before each addition. Continue whisking until thickened. Season with salt and cayenne.

What is the Thyroid gland? The Thyroid gland is an endocrine gland in the front of your neck, just below your Adam’s apple.

It is made up of two lobes, each about the size of a plum cut in half. The two lobes lie on either side of the wind-pipe. It makes two hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) which are excreted into the blood. These hormones are required for all the cells in the body to work normally. In the cells and tissues of the body T4 is converted into T3. It is the T3 that is derived from T4 or excreted as T3 from the thyroid gland, which is biologically active and influences the activity of all the cells and tissues of the body. What do thyroid hormones do? The T3 which comes from the T4 and also that which is secreted directly by the thyroid gland influence the metabolism of body cells. It regulates the speed with which the body cells work. What can go wrong? Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) – not enough thyroxine is produced for the bodies needs. Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) – too much thyroxine is produced for the bodies needs. Hypothyroidism is the most common. Thyroid disorders tend mainly to occur in women, although they can occur in anybody, even children and babies. Common symptoms Hypothyroidism: tiredness, feeling cold, slow heart rate, constipation, weight gain, poor concentration, depression. Hyperthyroidism: weight loss, rapid heart rate, increased bowel movements or diarrhea, heat intolerance, anxiety and sometimes sore gritty eyes. Sometimes there are very few symptoms. A simple blood test at your FAMILY MEDICAL CENTRE will confirm whether you have a thyroid disorder. Other thyroid disorders Thyroid eye disease – this affects people with an overactive thyroid due to Graves’ disease Nodules or swelling – these lumps can stop the gland from working properly or may just be

uncomfortable. Thyroid cancer – this is very rare but it is important to get a doctor to check any lumps in the neck Having a baby can sometimes trigger a thyroid disorder. This is known as post partum thyroiditis. It is usually a temporary but can return each time you have a baby.

How is the thyroid controlled? In the brain there is a gland known as the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland senses the level of thyroid hormones in the blood and reacts by secreting a hormone called thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and this hormone activates the thyroid gland to produce more T4 and T3. When the thyroid levels rise above normal the pituitary stops secreting TSH so that the thyroid stops working so hard and the production of T4 and T3 is reduced. What causes thyroid disorders? There are many different causes of thyroid disease but the most common cause is autoimmune thyroid disease - a self destructive process in which the body’s immune system attacks the thyroid cells as though they were foreign cells. In response the thyroid gland becomes either under or overactive. Thyroid disorders can run in families. Diagnosis Thyroid disease is easily diagnosed by a simple blood test. Treatment Most thyroid disorders are treated with medication. There are other treatments for conditions which cannot be treated with medication. If you are concerned that you have any of the symptoms then contact the family medical centre to arrange to have a blood test.

La Vila shown red card by patricia thompson HIGH –FLYING RUGBY club La Vila was disqualified from the play-offs and the chance of promotion after a complaint over fielding an unqualified player. After defeating CAU Valencia in both of the quarter final legs, the club’s players and officials were sidelined after the opposition cried ‘foul’ – allowing the Valencia club to progress through the semi-final matches against Burgos and a place in the final. Despite being “deservedly” beaten, CAU lodged a complaint with the Valencia Rugby Federation following the first match alleging La Vila fielded an illegal player. La Vila Club President Jason Craig had needed a replacement for a player who had returned to America. He found Luciana Martinez . “I duly notified the Federation and confirmed with them that he was eligible to play in the league,” said Jason. “They confirmed this to me in writing but made no mention that he was not eligible to play in the play-offs.” Disqualified and fined, La Vila appealed the decision and asked for a postponement of the new fixture, CAU versus Burgos, until all appeal procedures had been met; but this was turned down in just 24 hours. A bitter La Vila has asked a number of questions: should Jason have taken the Federation’s answer to his player’s

registration on trust? Should the officials of CAU have made the complaint when in the same situation previously it made no complaint when beaten, suggesting double standards? Should the Federation have allowed the second meaningless match to take place with scant regard to players, who may have suffered unnecessary injuries, and to the fans of both teams? If a player is deemed to be eligible for league games how is it that he then becomes illegible for the play-off games when he has helped them to get to that stage?

Benitachel Bowls Club Valencian Champions League. This week saw Benitachell Bowls Club away to El Cid. This is possibly one of the most difficult fixtures on the calendar, but on a warm and sunny day, BBC shone. Things got off to a slow start when Clive Langan came up against a strong performer in Derek Eldon, he gave it his best, but went down 21 – 12. Things improved when Christine Mawson, playing the singles, defeated Lynne Eldon 21 shots to 11, a great result. The pairs game was that classic “The Great Escape” starring Tim Woodcock and Steve Griffin (not McQueen), they were 16 – 0 down after 6 ends, they went

And the club alleged in a game played by ‘gentlemen’ the players of CAU would rather be in the semi-finals on merit than by default but club officials may have had one eye on sponsorship arrangements before coming to their decision. A spokesman said: “The La Vila team gave their all throughout the season as did their supporters. It is they who will feel let down. Lessons must be learned all round. Knowing the spirit of the club they will bounce back next season with a renewed energy in their quest to gain promotion.”

on to take the next 7 ends to make it 16 – 15. The last 5 ends were an arm wrestle but, as in all good stories, they fought their way through to win 20 – 18 brilliant. Out triples team of Mary Cockell, Bert McLean and Bob Cockell had a tough day. They were doing well until the 12th end but a misfortune and a mid game siesta saw them fall behind. Even a 4 on the last end was not enough to improve on the 18 shots to 20 score line. The rinks team of Carole Davies, Derek Mawson, Mike Smith and Dudley Davies had a better day staying on top of their opponents. There was some really good bowling with a fair share of excellent saving shots. The final saw a 19 – 10 win for them. Final score of the day: BBC with a score of 90 = 8 points El Cid with a score of 80 = 4 points. BBC can now look forward to their home game again Javea Green on the 23rd May.

Pego golf society Oliva Nova greens were being aerated today, so they were virtually unplayable, so the Society made the trip up the AP7 to La Galiana near to Tavernes, and were not disappointed. The course was outstanding, much more difficult than the last time we played it.

Points. 3rd Place was David Blakely (20.8) and Steve Wilkins (22) with 37 Points. 4th Place was Peter Cornes(22.8) and Danny Herron (13.6) with 36 Points.

The rough was incredibly long, and balls which normally would run back on the fairways because of the terrain, stuck in the rough, and were not accessible. The greens were outstanding as always, and the overall appearance was a great improvement. Yes well done to La Galiana green staff. We had a less than average turn out today of 25 members and guests, and the only guests today were Steve Wilkins and Clive Smith. They were warmly welcomed by our Captain David O’Connor. The weather was beautiful, the views over the course with the mountains towering above was a joy to behold. The results of the “Pairs Better Ball ” competition were follows :Division 1 1st Place was Malcolm Wise (6.2) and Mario Van Kessel (23.2) with 41 Points. 2nd Place was Brian Barden (17.9) and Mr Ghost with 37

Our player of the day was Mario Van Kessel, with a wonderful score, and congratulations to Mario on his excellent play today. After the game, Mario asked the secretary of Pego Golf Society to cut his handicap to from 23.2 to 21 on general play. Don’t hear that very often !!! Nearest the hole at Hole 3 was Shaun O’Gorman with 5.59 meters, and nearest the hole at hole 14, was Danny Herron with 1.43 meters. If any member or guest would like to play with the Pego Golf Society, and who wouldn’t, as we are playing a “Stableford Competition ” next Tuesday 24th of May at Oliva Nova, please contact our secretary and send an e-mail to Penny Barden at pegohandicapsec@gmail.com or enter through our website www.pegogolfsociety.com. A warm welcome awaits you. Thank you La Galiana for a wonderful day’s golf, which will live in our hearts for a long, long, time.

Alfaz fantasy football league

The last weekend of the Premier League produced plenty of goals and excitement and could easily have finished with a bang if it had not been for someone spotting a suspicious parcel at Old Trafford before the Kick Off. Overall there were 4 Mid-Week games and 9 Premier League games at the Weekend which gave the Alfaz Fantasy Football League 46 goals, only 3 clean sheets,34 yellow cards and 1 red one.Newcastle’s Mitrovic is becoming another Diego Costa has he received his marching orders for the 2nd time this Season. Joe’s team Keith Lard F.C.reached the Summit of the A.F.F.L. 17 weeks ago and to be fair they have never look like relinquishing the top spot since. With one week left they have an unassailable 94 point lead over 2nd placed Plaistow13hammers.Dog Dale who were challenging early on are in 3rd place while Arthur’s Wombles have moved back into contention for a top four finish.5 points separate the next 4 teams so it’s all to play for with 2 games to go.Handbrake City went through trap door about the same time as Aston Villa and they look like receiving 3 Wooden Spoons. Maxine’s Plaistow13hammers have runaway with our Mark Carter Ladies Section and it is now between Debbie’s Foxy Filberts,Joanna’s

Hup Hannah City,Karen’s Ceasar’s Blackcats and Liz’s White Lions for who finishes Runners Up.Megan’s team How Much Depay are leading the chase for our 20 euro voucher which is sponsored Quick Save Supermarket in Albir. At the moment they have 3 point advantage over Plaistow13hammers. In our U.K.T.V.SPAIN Junior League Nathan’s TyrannosuarezRex F.C.have a comfortable 18 point lead over Super Rhys and they should hold on to that advantage with only 2 games to go.Down at the foot of the Table Bradley’s team Hero to Zero have returned to the bottom spot after spending most of the Season occupying that place and they now trail Marcus’s Salford Sausages by a narrow 6 points. James’s team Jukeboxers have returned to the top of our Leonard Knowles Construction Golden Boot League but only with a slender 6 point advantage over Pearson’s Smashers, this League really is going down to the wire. The 2 Teams going into our Premier Imports Monthly Draw for a case of Cava are our top scoring team which was Scott’s Team Emm You Eff See with a tally of 57 points 17 of them coming from Arsenal’s Giroud who crashed in an Hat-Trick against relegated Aston Villa. The other team joining them is our lowest scoring team which was Alison’s Foxywise who failed to bother the scorer.Last Month’s Winner was Wyn’s

Got the Blues.(well a Chelsea Fan had to win something this Season!) Manager of the Month for May is being kindly sponsored by the BREW ROCK Restaurant in Albir who provide a super A La Carte Menu and is situated right on the front. Scott’s Emm You Eff See are in pole position at the moment with a slight 2 point lead over last weeks leaders Lee’s Walkden Town. Two of our Junior Teams are 3rd & 4th place Gino’s Minions and Ginger Ninjar. Jeanette became our 4th Lady Manager to win our RTN K.O.Competition when her team Jin’s Dream Team beat the favourites Dazza’s team The Pheonix Club by 28 -15 in the Final,Her top Player was Southampton’s Pelle who scored 9 points. Steve has won our Breakfast for 2 at Rafters Sponsored by Kate after his team The Restoration Men climbed up 24 places to number 135th in the main League. There is only one week left for the 22nd A.F.F.L. so it’s important to check where your team finishes by visiting our website which is www.alfazffl.com or if you can’t access the Net you can always pop into one of the Bars which support us by displaying all the Tables and Results on their Notice Boards. in Albir The Local & Wyndhams,in Alfaz Robin’s Nest,in Benidorm Union Jack and in Moraira Barilloche.

Clowns to the left, jokers to the right by Jack Troughton THE CIRCUS came to town on Sunday as Jalon Valley HELP’s annual May Fayre raised an “amazing” 6164€ to help fund its community projects. The colourful Big Top theme at the Jalon event was a winner with hundreds of visitors and allowed the charity’s team of volunteers and some of the 75 stall holders to go a little wild with costumes. Spring sunshine insured everyone could wander round at leisure, enjoy the entertainment. And spend a little cash – many of the side shows were run specifically for HELP. And Elaine Horton, HELP’s President, said the total raised was “fantastic news” for the charity, adding: “Incredible, in fact, so much so, we needed to check and recheck the figures to order to make sure that we had it right.”

She said everyone involved in making the day such a success should rightly feel proud. “The fact is that few really understand what hard work it is to pull off something like the May Fayre. “I know, for instance, that many of you work late into the night to get things ready and it is easy to forget sometimes what goes on behind the scenes both before and after an event like this.” Elaine said the committee wished to thank everyone’s efforts for the “amazing result”, adding: “Equally, there will be many folk less fortunate than ourselves who will benefit from the monies raised who would also wish me to pass on their sincere gratitude” She said the simple truth was Jalon Valley HELP had a “really great bunch” of committed volunteers prepared to pull out all the stops to help those in need

A positive experience

THE BRITISH are passionate about queues, according to research from Onepoll.com: I passionately hate them. And so it is with a sinking feeling that I find myself in yet another claustrophobic traffic jam. But hang on a minute, it’s a much more positive experience because I’m driving a Toyota Yaris Hybrid and it thrives in such situations. In fact it is possible to travel up to two miles at 30mph on its electric motor, thus conserving expensive petrol. The Yaris Hybrid is a joy because, as long as the driver is light with the right foot and the motor is sufficiently charged, it

will automatically crawl along in EV (electric vehicle) mode. If it doesn’t then there is an EV switch, awkwardly placed near the handbrake. Either way, progress is similar to the sound and pace of a milk float. Woe betide the impatient motorist because apply too much pressure on the accelerator and it’ll start guzzling fuel. There’s a similar temptation when other irritated motorists are forced to form an orderly queue behind as the driver nurses the little hybrid on its way. But when the traffic is slow moving it works well. Normal driving results in the engine charging the motor back up in time to be used in another queue.

I would be happier if this hybrid technology was coupled to a more efficient diesel engine as it consumes too much petrol for my liking, really only allowing around 350 miles of travel on a full tank. The tank is 36 litres or 7.9 gallons (compared to 42 litres in a standard Yaris, to make room for the hybrid battery) and during my test it has averaged 44mpg. This makes it much more appropriate for pottering around town rather than motorway munching. It does have an excellent cruise control that can be used at speeds of 26mph and above even with EV mode. It can be set at 30mph and no matter whether travelling downhill or up it will stick rigidly to this speed, which is particularly helpful when a speed camera is present. A unique interior is made all the more so by what appears to be a light turquoise woodchip wallpaper effect on the dashboard and door inserts, which you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. It is actually a fabric but at a quick glance looks very much MODEL TESTED like wallpaper.
