UNITED IN HISTORY by JACK TROUGHTON
ALICANTE AND Cardiff could unite as “twins” through historical links dating back to the Spanish Civil War and a Welsh hero who helped rescue almost 3,000 people in the conflict’s final days. In March 1939, Captain Archibald Dickson and his crew aboard SS Stanbrook took on board desperate families fleeing Franco’s fascist regime as Italian troops marched on the city. A memorial to the heroic act can be seen at the side of the modern day marina. The refugees were taken to Algeria despite the owners of the ship’s orders. Sadly, the Cardiff ship was to fall victim – with all hands lost - to a torpedo of a German U-Boat in the early days of World War Two. However, links between the Costa Blanca city and Cardiff look to be forged with an official bridge to thank the seaman and his crew. Alicante Mayor Gabriel Echavarri welcomed 30 members of the International Brigades Memorial Trust to the city – an association pledged to protect the memory of those who fought in the 1936 to 1939 conflict – to city hall. “Alicante City council will pursue twinning with the city of Cardiff,” said the politician, as he met with trust members and representatives of the Comision Civica de Alicante para le Recuperacion de la Memoria Historica – which aims to preserve the memory of those who suffered at the hands of Franco’s regime, which crushed the democratically elected republican government. Every year, members and supporters of the International Brigades Memorial Trust (IBMT) stage a march at Jarama – one of the bitterly contested battlefields of Madrid – in memory of British volunteers who gave their lives defending liberty.

A word from the Editors desk...
Hola!
The growing relationship between the cities of Alicante and Cardiff is a bright light evolving from the dark days of the Spanish Civil War and might actually see them ´twinned´ in a meaningful relationship.
See Page 56
The International Brigades played a significant part in the brutal conflict and are honoured each year in Madrid. Memories of the war dim with time but in Alicante steps are being taken to insure key events never disappear from history. The story of the SS Stanhope is one of humanity and courage and is once again featured in our pages. The heroism of the ship´s captain and crew in rescuing almost 3,000 refugees from the port is still something overlooked in British history books but is an incredible tale – sadly, the ship was lost with all hands later in 1939 when she was torpedoed in the North Sea. And 15th Century history also resurfaces with the story of Joan of Arc´s ring making its way back to France after spending 600 years in England. The Hundred Years War is definitely beyond memory but at RTN Towers we do like to keep people informed. The EU referendum will play an important part in Britain´s history and once again there is a reminder for those who can to register to vote.

El Campello bike thieves caught
Stolen bicycles
by CAROLINE TYSZKA GUARDIA CIVIL officers in El Campello have detained eight people, suspected of bike theft. Seven adults and one minor, suspected of stealing at least 37 bicycles, have been arrested, following an operation launched by the Guardia Civil called “RUEDIN.” Bikes, including six high-end models, were recovered by officers, having detained three of the arrested at the local tram stop. When they were questioned about the bicycles in their possession, they could not prove ownership, and it later transpired that the cycles had
been stolen a few days before in Alfaz del Pi. The operation had been instigated due to the high increase of reported bicycle thefts in recent months throughout the region, and due to the Guardia Civils vigilance at the time, further thefts were avoided. The other arrests were made just a few days later, when plain clothed officers caught the rest of the criminal group entering a garage area about to commit another crime. The area was sealed off and they were caught red handed trying to leave the area with three bikes. The 8 people have been charged with the 37 thefts and with belonging to a criminal group.

ALTEA HELPING THE DISABLED ALTEA TOWN council workers have been busy installing new road signs that include the word disabled. Previously Altea town’s disabled spaces have been marked with a parking sign and then an additional white board posted underneath indicating that the space was only for that use. Aware that this showed a lack of acceptance for integration the town hall decided that one measure was to have the signage incorporate the word without the need for the extra sign. Roque Ferrer, councillor for infrastructure, announced that the town was also creating more disabled parking spaces in the Old Town zones, where it is particularly difficult for the less mobile as well as improving access to the beach area. The councillor explained that there had been a great deal of coordination between his department and that of Social Welfare and Equality to ensure that people living with a disability were treated with dignity.

Emergency EU summit
by CAROLINE TYSZKA EUROPEAN LEADERS met this week to discuss the migrant crisis. As Royal Navy ships headed towards Greece for a NATO mission to patrol the waters of Greece and other eastern European hotspots, European Union leaders met in Brussels to tackle the spiralling migration crisis that is spreading across Europe. Ahmet Davutoglu, the Turkish Prime Minister, whose country is currently in crisis because of the number of migrants trying to escape Syria via their borders, was key to the talks, as figures released showed that over 125,000 migrants had arrived in Europe already in 2016. David Cameron, who attended the summit, said “the migration and refugee crisis is the greatest challenge facing Europe today.” Whilst the finer details need to be finalised, the EU and Turkey said that they had agreed the broad principles of a plan to ease the migration crisis. Under the plan discussed in Brussels, all migrants arriving in Greece from Turkey would be returned. For every Syrian sent back from Greece to Turkey, a Syrian already in Turkey would be resettled within the EU. In a very complex issue, many leaders felt that this was a gamechanging decision, including the Turkish Prime Minister, who said, “this will discourage illegal migration, prevent human smugglers, and help people who want to come to Europe, through encouraging legal migration.” It is hoped that the deal will be finalised very shortly, ahead of the next EU meeting on 17th and 18th March, although, at the time of going to press, Hungary’s anti-migration Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, had indicated he may veto the resettlement deal.

OPERATIONS CANCELLED AS DOCTORS STRIKE AGAIN JUNIOR DOCTORS staged a 48 hour strike this week, with only emergency care being provided in hospitals around the UK. As junior doctors took to the picket lines at 8am on Wednesday morning, it was estimated that over 5,000 operations had been cancelled because of the ongoing protest over new contracts. The British Medical Association members, 38,000 in total, provided emergency care until 8am this morning, as patients became frustrated about cancelled outpatient appointments and long awaited surgeries. The national incident director for the NHS, Anne Rainsberry, assured the public on Wednesday that patients would remain safe, with consultants helping to cover the gap left by the striking doctors. With both sides claiming to be acting in the interests of patient safety, a stalemate in talks does not look likely to change, as
Jeremy Hunt, the Health Secretary, has inflamed the situation by stating that he will now impose the new contract. Further 48-hour strikes are planned from 8am on 6th April and 8am on 26th April.

Forged prescription arrests NATIONAL POLICE officers have arrested two men at a Benidorm Hotel, and charged them with forging prescriptions. Two Spanish nationals, aged 34, were arrested in Benidorm, following a detailed investigation by the authorities, which involved drugs being sold on the black market, having being obtained at pharmacies on forged prescriptions. The police received information, from a pharmacist in Yecla, Murcia, that the same doctor was repeatedly signing prescriptions for a psychotropic drug – belonging to the group of benzo-
diazepines – and that he was concerned something was amiss. The accused were visiting pharmacies in Andalucía, Murcia, Valencia, Madrid and Castilla-La Mancha, to buy the drugs and then sell them, via the black market, often to addicts. The hotel rooms and vehicles of both detainees were searched, and officers seized 1,980 tablets that had been acquired fraudulently in pharmacies around Benidorm, and then hidden inside their car so as not to be detected if stopped for a general road check. They also found forged prescriptions and 740€ in cash. The investigation is still ongoing, with the possibility of other members of the criminal organisation being involved. The two arrested were charged with forgery and crimes against public health.
Energy giant job losses NPOWER have announced that they will be making over two thousand employees redundant. The ‘big six’ energy firm Npower confirmed at the beginning of the week that 2,400 jobs will go within the UK, with the company having had an operating loss of £106m in 2015. The German parent company, RWE, stated that they were having a “radical restructuring”, as their UK customer numbers fell by 360,000, resulting in them suffering a loss of 7% of their domestic customers last year alone. The cuts will come from those working full time, as well as contractors, with the Unison general secretary, Dave Prentis, saying “these huge job losses have come as a devastating blow, Npower have been in trouble for some time, due to poor decision making, and, now, the workers are having to pay the price.” The company was ordered to pay £26m, in a settlement imposed by the regulatory Ofgem, in December, for failing to treat customers fairly. Npower’s chief executive, Paul Coffey, said: “The 2015 results were extremely disappointing, and we have estimated that it will take two years to restructure and make the changes for our customers, and encourage previous clients to return.”

Helping keep the streets clean by CAROLINE TYSZKA
VILLAJOYOSA residents are to be issued with special “poop kits” in a bid to reduce dog poo on local footpaths. The Department of Urban Cleaning and the Department of Trade in Villajoyosa town hall have got together with the concessionaire who collects the rubbish and the Agricultural Society La Vega to campaign for cleaner streets, particularly when dealing with animals who excrement in public places. The awareness campaign is focusing on pet owners and their responsibility to pick up
after their animals when they leave droppings whilst out and about. Posters have been put up throughout the town and surrounding areas reminding owners to be thoughtful of others and a special free kit is being made available to help with the initiative. Included in the kit is bags for collecting the animal droppings and a spray that when used discourages the pets from urinating in that area. Jaime Ramis, local councillor, said “this is a much needed campaign as we find that many owners leave their animal droppings

Finestrat flooding plans
THE MAYOR of Finestrat has met with regional government ministers to urgently discuss the ongoing flooding problems in La Cala de Finestrat. Juan Francisco Pérez, mayor of Finestrat, travelled to Valencia to meet with the Director General of Planning, José Luis Ferrando Calatayud, to present a technical proposal to resolve the problem of constant flooding in the barranco de la Cala. The La Cala de Finestrat area suffers from extreme flooding every time the area has heavy rainfall, with the beach area, and surrounding roads, often having to be closed. Mr Pérez said, during the meeting, that more than regional financing “we ask urgently for validation of the technical project we have presented to the City Council, because we believe that is the most appropriate, economically viable, option, and offers a solution to the problem.” Finestrat is calling for the project to be approved urgently, so that the work can start immediately, and has asked that the River Basin Authority and City Council work together to make it happen.

Help with the bono social
THE BONO social is a rate subsidy or discount, established by the government, to help small consumers with their energy bills. The Spanish government has a special discount, called bono social, that is automatically applied to any household that contracts under 3 kW - this information can be found on your energy bill. However, there are also allowances for those who have higher than the 3 kW, but lower than 10 kW. Pensioners on low incomes, families with three or more children, single parent families, or households where all members are unemployed, can apply for the social bono, if they meet the ‘below 10 kW’ criteria. The difference that this can make to a small household may be a saving of 25% per bill, as the social bono is applied to usage throughout the year, not just when temperatures fall or rise. Obviously, there are certain conditions prior to applying for the discount, the primary one being that the person applying must be the titleholder of the energy supply. Full details regarding the bono social, as well as application forms, can be found on www.iberdrola.es and www.endesaclientes.com. Alternatively you can contact them via email: bonosocial@endesa.es or bonosocial@iberdrola.es. Iberdrola offer an English speaking telephone service on 900 22 52 35, as do Endesa when calling 800 76 09 09. Another very useful source of information about this benefit is the citizens’ advice bureau here in Spain, who can be contacted on www.citizensadvice.org.es.

International drug ring captured AN INTERNATIONAL drug trafficking network has been dealt a serious blow, as ten of its members have been arrested by the Guardia Civil. Officers arrested eight men and two women in Pamplona, Navarra, in northern Spain, suspected of crimes against public health, drug trafficking and belonging to criminal organisations. The operation, called “JOKER”, came about after the Guardia Civil intercepted 70 grams of cocaine hidden inside a vehicle on the N-7100 near the town of Arbizu. Further investigations led them to make a connection between two criminal organisations who were dealing with consignments of hashish from Morocco and speed from the Netherlands. The ten were arrested at two locations, one organisation based in Puente La Reina, Navarra, which dealt in localised sales, and the other group were based in the nearby town of Barañain. The second group dealt more with international shipments. This organization acquired significant amounts of hashish directly from Morocco and, after bringing the drugs into Spain through the coastal area of Cádiz, they transported it in vehicles equipped with double bottoms. The vehicles would deliver the hashish to Holland and then return with speed hidden in the emptied compartments. Officers searched several buildings and seized more than 72 kilos of hashish, over 1 kilo of marijuana, 120 grams of cocaine, 1 kilo of speed, 80 grams of MDMA, 50 grams of ketamine, 8 pills of ecstasy, 91 grams of hallucinogenic mushrooms “longuis” and 2,200 grams of cutting substances. In addition, they confiscated 17,890€, 8 sets of scales, 7 mobile phones, 2 laptops and 3 high-end vehicles.

Facebook trolls outlawed by Caroline Tyszka INTERNET USERS who create fake Facebook profiles could face criminal charges, as new guidelines come into force. Anyone who makes a Facebook account in a name other than their own by copying someone else’s, giving the impression that they are that person, could be outlawed under the new regulations. The Crown Prosecution service has said that the new rules could allow for the prosecution of people who create a profile “under the name of the victim, with fake information uploaded which, if believed, could damage their reputation and humiliate them.” Alison Saunders, Director for Public Prosecutions said, “online abuse is cowardly and can be deeply upsetting to the victim.” Social media giants such as Twitter and Facebook have facilities in place to report impersonation accounts. There will now be a six week public consultation period for the proposed guideline revisions, overseen by the CPS. On a lighter note here is this week’s poem from Anne-Marie:

Continued from FRONT PAGE AND THIS year, Labour International Costa Blanca helped organise a trip to Alicante. Although the international brigades were not involved in action in the region, it has strong historical links to the province and 30 IBMT members travelled to the coast. The twinning suggestion is promoted by the Civic Commission and the mayor apologised to the visitors for the failure of previous administrations to recognise the ‘historic memory’ of the civil war. And acknowledging the IBMT banner, Mr Echavarri said: “It is the first time in 77 years that the colours of the Republican government have been displayed in Alicante Civic Hall.” Sue Lent, a IBMT member and deputy leader of Cardiff City Council, said the Civic Commission had visited the Welsh capital last year to honour Captain Dickson and his crew and had presented a plaque. She promised to work with the Welsh Assembly to get it displayed in the city’s docks area. The first visit by the party was to Alicante’s main cemetery; the site of a mass grave. Some 724 Republican prisoners were executed after the end of the war and “dumped” in mass graves. The Civic Commission has managed to name the dead and they are remembered on a monument – smaller individual markers have been placed in the cemetery by families. The party was taken to the grave of poet Miguel Hernandez, the Spanish poet imprisoned by Franco for his Republican sympathies and died in an Alicante prison from medical neglect. MADRID Another of the dead was Colonel Antonio Ortega Gutierrez, a member of the Communist Party and a former President of Real Madrid FC. He was executed on 15th July 1939 at the age of 51. The IBMT members were also taken to the harbour and the memorial dedicated to Captain Dickson and the SS Stanbrook – they also visited the ‘field of almonds’ where those who
were unable to flee on the ship were taken by the Italian troops – again a monument marks the site. And there was also a visit to Alicante’s Central Market. On 25th May 1938, Italian bombers fighting for Franco raided the city, killing 300 civilians. A stainless steel plaque on the market floor remembers the “forgotten tragedy”, and recalls the nine aircraft, the number of bombs dropped and red lights remember the dead – they are illuminated each day at 11.45am for 15 minutes. The visitors were also taken to Petrer, the final seat of the Republican government which could become a museum, and a nearby airfield at El Hondon, where Prime Minister Juan Negrin was flown out to exile. The party also visited Alcoy, another community bombed by the Italians as it produced war materials for the Republican side, and the Swedish Norwegian Hospital which provided humanitarian aid during the Civil War. Caves at Canalobre are a popular tourist attraction but many visitors do not know of its connection to the Civil War. The access tunnel was carved by engineers and it was a Republican Army store and repair area for aircraft. The final visit was to Alicante University and the exhibition of photographs called ‘Cartografias Silenciados’ by Ana Teresa Ortega. They are 61 colour pictures of Franco’s prisoner of war camps and accompanying memorabilia. There was also an opportunity to read a list of the inmates of the San Pedro prison – including British and other nationalities who fought for the International Brigades.

EU urged to act on ‘Brexit’ by JACK TROUGHTON
THE EUROPEAN Union is being urged to pressure the British Government to give all expats a vote in June’s ‘Brexit’ referendum. At present a ’15-year rule’ bars people from having a say in UK general elections and referenda after that time but it is hoped the EU can intervene and open the ballot to all two million expats in Europe. Parcent Town Hall has unanimously passed a motion asking for the franchise to be extended – and other councils in Valencia have been asked to support the action. It has been sent to the EU’s powerful petitions committee and added to an existing petition lodged by Parcent’s Deputy Mayor Jacqui Cotterill lodged in 2012 calling for all Spanish residents to be able to vote. And while the EU cannot force a change, it is hoped it will persuade Britain to extend the franchise – just as it did in 2013 when the Conservative Party put a ‘votes for life’ promise in its manifesto; legislation that has still to be made into law. “It is very late, the campaign to get the vote has been going for years and we are still at this very late stage asking for action,” said Jacqui. “We remain British citizens and apart from our own futures here in Spain, the majority of us retain links and interests in the UK. It is not as if we have turned our backs on our country – we have savings, family and homes there – there is a stake in our pensions.” And she said however people chose to vote in the referendum over membership of the EU, it was vital those who could registered to have their say. “I cannot vote, my family here cannot vote and I find it democratically frustrating because this referendum has a direct impact on our lives here in Spain - but many hundreds of thousands of people can still vote!”
Jacqui at the EU
She said at present people were being “bombarded” with information by both sides of the ‘in-out’ debate. “It is difficult to get the facts on the potential impact on our lives but it is not scaremongering to point out there is a huge uncertainty for people living here.
“It has been said that nothing will change because our acquired rights will be protected. However, there are no guarantees.” To register to vote, go to www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. People last registered to vote in the last 15 years can apply.

It was announced that the influential record producer, Sir George Martin, passed away at his home on Tuesday, with social media immediately becoming a source for people to offer their condolences and relive happy memories. Sir George signed the Beatles in 1962 and went on to enjoy 17 number ones with the band, as well as working with musical icons such as Bob Dylan and Sir Elton John. His manager said, in a statement, that Sir George’s family “would like to thank everyone for their thoughts, prayers and messages of support” after he passed away at home on Tuesday. Ringo Starr tweeted: “God bless George Martin peace and love to Judy and his family ... Thank you for all your love and kindness George peace and love xx.” During one interview with the then popular publication Melody Maker, he famously said about the Beatles that, “as composers, they didn’t rate. They hadn’t shown me that they could write anything at all.” The Queen awarded the record producer with a CBE in 1988 and he then became a Sir in 1996. Child smuggled in luggage
Northern Lights spectacular UK show
A TRAVELLER smuggled a four-year-old child into Paris hidden inside her hand luggage, Air France has revealed. The woman passenger flew from Istanbul after purchasing a ticket for herself but not for the little girl. The woman, a French resident, placed the bag containing the girl at her feet but at one stage opened her luggage and a fellow passenger spotted movement and alerted members of the cabin crew. The airline reported the incident to the authorities but the women, who is adopting the child, will not be prosecuted.
THE SKIES of the UK were lit up at the weekend in a rare and spectacular show, as the Northern Lights glowed a rainbow of colours. The Aurora Borealis, more commonly known as the Northern Lights, gave the UK a rare and beautiful display of green, red and orange skies on Sunday night as the phenomenon was clearly visible in Scotland and Northern Ireland as well as reports that it could be seen in Anglesey and Oxfordshire. Weather experts had predicted the solar storm which enabled many to take breathtakingly beautiful images of the sky from about 8 pm last night. Amanda Townsend, a space weather adviser for the Met Office, said “this was a lucky combination of conditions which has given us this fantastic display. Once in a while the solar winds are enhanced to levels stronger than normal, with particles at higher speeds, and on this occasion it has connected really well with the Earth’s magnetic field.

Benidorm celebrates local police anniversary by CAROLINE TYSZKA BENIDORM CELEBRATED the local police’s 172nd anniversary at the weekend, with a special presentation ceremony. The mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez, along with other dignitaries, hosted an official ceremony, on Saturday, to honour the work that the local police in the resort have done over many years, and also to present special service awards, which included some officers who have been with the force for 25 years. Part of the ceremony saw the mayor lay a wreath in memory of the local policemen who had died last year, with Juan Fuertes, head of the local force, highlighting the dangerous job that his officers do daily. Mr Fuertes addressed the crowd and talked of a Guardia Civil officer who lost his life recently in a traffic control accident, and also the loss of fellow comrades at the attack on the Spanish Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan, just four months ago. Presenting diplomas to the long serving officers, the mayor gave “unequivocal and unflinching” support, on behalf of himself and his government team, for all local police officers, and pledged to continue to improve working conditions.
A meeting of minds CHARM AND colour dominate the paintings and sculptures currently being exhibited by Jenny Anne Morrison and Georgie Poulariani in Calpe. Jenny’s paintings are complimented by the metal sculptures of Georgie at the Exposiciones Ajuntament Vell in Calpe’s historic old town and are well worth checking out. Georgie has a workshop and small gallery in Benissa and Jenny’s podiatrist Philip Mann suggested they get together. “They came over to my house in Tormos and saw my work and Georgie liked it – I have since put paintings in his gallery,” Jenny explained. “He said he had this exhibition in Calpe and would I like to show some pieces. “I had a very good year last year and wasn’t sure if I had enough paintings -so since New Year I have been painting my socks off.” The free exhibition at Calpe’s old Casa de Cultura in Calle Francisco Zaragosa, is open until Wednesday 30th March and can be seen Tuesday to Saturday between 10am and 2pm, and 4.30pm to 7.30pm.

EASTER SUNRISE SERVICE
by JACK TROUGHTON
SET THE alarm for a spectacular sunrise service being staged on Easter Sunday by Javea International Baptist Church on the beach at around 7.40am.
ACTOR Christopher Robbie plays scientist Charles Darwin in his oneman show ‘Beyond Paradise’ on the Costa Blanca next month. Promoted by Concerts Costa Blanca, the play explores the life and work of the Victorian scientist. Famed for his theory of evolution through natural selection, his work was highly controversial but Darwin did not set out to contradict the bible or rock the establishment. Christopher Robbie, who trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and is a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, appears in Beyond Paradise at the Espai La Senieta theatre in Moraira on the 7th, 8th and 9th of April. He first brought the play to Teulada 16 years ago, when he performed before an audience of 180 at El Canor to great acclaim and Concerts Costa Blanca believe people will again enjoy “a memorable evening of superb theatre”. Sir David Attenborough described Beyond Paradise as “absorbing and intriguing”, while John Thackray, the Naturalist History Museum Archivist said: “The play perfectly encapsulates Darwin as a family man and shows him as an experimenter, observer, thinker, and writer.” Tickets are 15€ and can be booked by sending an email to info@concertscostablanca.com with the number of seats required, the date of the performance and a mobile ‘phone contact. The show starts at 8pm on the 7th and 8th of April and 7.30pm on 9th April.
JIBC is inviting everyone along to the informal service by the sea near the La Siesta Restaurant – between the Arenal and Javea Port - on Sunday 27th March. News from afar Return of the ring
JOAN OF Arc’s silver ring has been returned back to France after being purchased for 385,000€ following an auction in the UK. History-themed amusement park Le Puy du Fou won a hotly contested sale and will be put on public display in April. London-based Timeline Auctions said a number of documents offered the evidence that the ring belonged to the Maid of Orleans, who gave it to English cardinal Henry Beaufort just before she was burned at the stake. However, the new owner has given a different version of events. The amusement park claims the ring was confiscated by pro-English Bishop Pierre Cauchon during Joan of Arc’s heresy trial and despite her repeated plea for the prized possession to be returned to her, the bishop gave it to Beaufort and it was carried back to England as “a symbolic spoil of war”. It then remained 600 years in England, and the park’s founder Philippe de Villiers said the long-lost “treasure” was finally “restored to the French people”. The ring is inscribed with the letters ‘IHS’ and ‘MAR’, abbreviations for Jesus and Mary, and was said to have been a gift to Joan from her parents for her first communion. Mr de Villiers said there was “no doubt” it was the saint’s ring and it had been dated to the 15th Century. Joan believed God chose her to lead France to victory in its long-running war with England. With no military training, she convinced the Crown Prince Charles of Valois to allow her to lead a French army to the besieged city of Orleans and a famous victory over the English. But after the prince was crowned King Charles VII, Joan was captured and tried for witchcraft and heresy by the English. She was burned at the stake in 1431 at the age of 19.
Taser sets man on fire
AUSTRALIAN POLICE accidently set fire to a man by deploying a Taser device. A 51 year old man, throwing petrol at Australian police officers, caught fire, after they attempted to subdue him with a Taser gun. Officers were called to a disturbance in Sydney, after receiving reports that a man carrying a chainsaw was attempting to cut down a nearby power pole. At the scene, in Riverstone, Sydney, the man approached the police and began throwing petrol at them, resulting in pepper spray and a Taser gun being deployed. This ignited the man’s clothing, with the officers rushing to extinguish the flames and the 51 year old man then running back into his home. After an hour of negotiating with the authorities, the man surrendered and was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated for minor burns. One of the officers was also treated at the hospital, as the petrol had splashed into his eyes.

Not so sweet Gene Vincent by
Chris Ashley
Writer & Broadcaster
(Apologies to Ian Dury) POP QUIZ, hotshot. What connects the late boxing commentator Reg Gutteridge and the late rocker Gene Vincent? They were able to stab themselves in the left leg and feel no pain. Reg lost his limb during the D-Day landings and the P.R. Machine had it that Gene suffered major injuries during the Korean conflict – in fact it was a motor cycle accident with drink involved. Reg had a prosthetic leg, Gene had a metal leg brace- thus they were both able to enjoy endless hours entertaining unsuspecting guests at social soirées by taking a barbecue fork and skewering their limp limb with no outward signs of stress. Such japes. Having never met Mr. Gutteridge I can only assume he had a puckish sense of humour – having met Mr. Vincent – well that was a completely different case of Be-Bop-A-Lula lunacy. He arrived with more baggage than Louis Vuitton as I found out when, as a cub reporter, I interviewed him. He was appearing at a dance hall in Woebegone Worthing, this is a rock God that had sold millions of records & had The Beatles as major fans, but here he was scuffing around in my little home town just before he went on tour with Eddie Cochran – and we know that didn’t end well. So there I am with my notebook, quill poised, when Darlene, 2nd of Gene’s 4 wives caught this 16 year old virgin’s eye & captured his beating heart. We chatted and being a Southern belle she just loved my English accent (not sure about my wonky teeth, national health specs & zits). She told me why racial segregation was necessary in the Deep South & that JFK had better watch his back, y’all. In return I tried to explain why Mike & Bernie Winters were considered funny & how a cricket match can last 5 days & still finish in a draw. It was all very cosy, but bearing in mind Eric Burdon described Gene as an alcoholic pistol packing pill popping paranoid (who in 1968 shot at Gary Glitter because he was getting too friendly with the then Mrs Vincent) this besotted, but I like to think, prescient wimp made his excuses and left. Still a huge fan though – just about to slap on ‘Say Mama’ (Capitol CL14974) 45 rpm vinyl on the old Dansette & if you google that label number checking it’s kosher, you’re even sadder than me.

DEAR READERS, As we have informed in previous articles, the European Inheritance Regulation 650/2012 applies to all successions in relation to deaths that occurred from 17th of August 2015 onwards. Since the 17th of August last year, successions in Spain are in principle governed by the law of the country where the deceased has habitual residency at the time of their death. Therefore, in principle the succession of all people who have their habitual residency in Spain and have no will, will be governed according to Spanish law. However, it is possible under this regulation (Article 22), by means of a testament, to opt expressly for the law of nationality of the testator or testatrix, as the one to govern the succession. We should clarify that the application of Spanish law refers to the law that should govern the inheritance, that is: who should inherit, whether or not family members must necessarily receive part of the inheritance or if there is freedom to testate, etc., but has nothing to do with inheritance taxes to be paid, as they are governed by other legislation. I make this clarification, because many foreigners are not being properly advised and believe that this European Regulation allows them to choose to pay inheritance taxes according to the law of their nationality, but this is not the case. As we have reiterated, according to Spanish law, the descendants have the right to inherit the majority of the estate, as they are considered as forced heirs. In addition, depending on the circumstances, there are other forced heirs that could be entitled to inherit, such as ancestors and spouses. Therefore, if you have your habitual residence in Spain and you pass away without a will, Spanish intestate law will apply to your succession, and your descendants will inherit the vast majority of your estate, and your spouse will be entitled to only a residual part (the usufruct of a third of estate), which contrasts with the rules of other countries, that reserve a greater share of the inheritance to husbands and wives. For this reason, if you want your assets to be distributed as allowed according to your own national laws, or to choose how to distribute them (with the limits established by applicable law), you must make a Will. This will also simplify the succession process to your beneficiaries, the probate process will be faster, cheaper and easier, avoiding problems between the family members, etc. If you do not have a Will in Spain, you should make one getting the right advice, please contact us.

Why invest?
Money
30
A good question when you look at the current volatility and current period of negative growth in the equity, bond, foreign exchange and commodities markets
But could this mean it is a golden opportunity to buy cheaply, with lots of potential to make money when the markets start to turn. Over the last 100 years statistically equities have beaten bonds and inflation and if whilst invested in equities you have reinvested income earned from equities then you are onto winner. As seasoned investors know the markets go through Bull ( good) and Bear (bad) times, but investments are for the medium to long term , 5 years plus. So when investing the main thing is not to panic when markets go down and not to get too overjoyed when they rise, take a long term view. Also if you want the potential to make your money work for you investing is one of the very few options that can offer this at the current time. At the moment placing money that you need to generate income or growth in a savings account, is quite frankly just not an option. Just look at interest rates being offered in the UK and Europe on savings accounts, they are at an all time low, and it now looks more than likely they will not rise until 2020 at the earliest and we could even see negative interest rates before rates start to go up very slowly. If you want to know what investment options are out there for YOU? Blacktower Financial Management has been established for 30 years and have worked with clients through the good and the bad times, offering sound independent advice. We have products that can to a certain extent smooth out the volatility for clients and offer consistent returns, products that offer more flexibility and can hold a wide selection of funds of varying risk from Cautious and Balanced through to Adventurous . Fallas Festival THE TRADITIONAL fallas take place across the region over the next few days, with beautiful creations being judged and then ceremonially burnt. Valencia, Benidorm and Denia, amongst others, will be holding their fallas festival, which starts traditionally on 15th March. Originally said to be a pagan event, where villagers burnt fires to welcome in the spring, the festival has transitioned through the years to become a popular artistic expression of giant humorous characters, such as Pinocchio. The creations are paraded through the streets on the 15th, with a more religious ceremony the following day, starting with a 5.30am grand awakening - which calls the community to parade through the town with a statue of the virgin and offerings of flowers. 19th March sees the grand finale, called the crema, where religious parades blend into more of a party atmosphere, including the very loud daytime fireworks, mascletas. The evening concludes with the fire parade, called the cabalgata de fuego, where everyone dresses in colourful costumes, dances to the many bands and watches the burning of the creations. Dick Handscombe Holistic gardener and author
Irises are great spring flowers IRISES ARE now starting to flower in many gardens and will create colourful displays for up to two months. Basically there are three types of iris that grow well in both coastal and inland gardens. Dutch and Spanish irises and the larger flowered bearded irises. Irises have become a popular bulbous plant for ten reasons. They for many weeks in the Spring. They are perennials so flower for many years. They multiply each year. After a few years daughter rhizomes can be separated from the original parent plant in the autumn and planted to expand displays. At this time it is best to discard the original mother rhizome. The tough skin of the Iris rhizome means that it is less susceptible to eel worm, slug and snail damage than the thinner skins of bulbs such as tulips especially during the dry summer months. There are many varieties available so interesting collections can be built up. They do best in full sun. They can be grown in dedicated beds, mixed beds, in containers and on rockeries. Irises need very little if any watering. They have few disease problems. When planting irises prefer a soil enriched with well rotted compost or manure rather than a post feeding with manufactured nitrogen rich fertilisers. The latter can result in too much green growth and smaller flowers. Rhizome type irises should be planted so that the top is just showing with the roots spread out and covered with firmed down soil. Water all irises once a week to stimulate root growth for a month, or two if there is no rain, but always remember that irises do not like to be waterlogged. In the spring and early summer watch out for aphids if the weather is humid and spray for several weeks until the danger is past. The height of the iris stem and size of flower means that the plant needs plenty of nutrients so feed your irises each year six weeks before you expect them to flower. Typically this will be March /April on the coast and April/May in higher up inland gardens. A second feed each October is also beneficial. Grasses and other weeds can grow within clumps of dying back plants but do weed by hand rather than using weed killers irises as the latter can affect the quality – especially the colour – of the flowers.’ Finally if you invest in a few irises they are something that you can enjoy for the rest of your life.

The help manual Dear Auntie Virus I have recently downloaded GIMP 2.8 and the English Help Manual, it is like Photoshop only free. To use it, I need to open the help dialogue by clicking on ‘Help’ which then offers On-line or Manual. I cannot open the help manual I downloaded as it will only offer the on-line help. If I go to Edit>Preferences>Help System it says help is not installed locally. I know it is there because I can open it from Programme Files in little pieces and nothing I change will open it up. I have reloaded the whole programme twice and it is no different. Can you recommend anything please? Kind regards, Mike. Reply: I have just downloaded GIMP, and installed it, changing the language preference to English. I then downloaded and installed the manual - the English one, and not the English United Kingdom one. I opened GIMP, and I could access the “off line” manual. Searching around I found a few people having the same issue but they were trying to use the “English United Kingdom” version. Using the “English” version and they could then access the manual from within GIMP. Response: Thanks very much. I’ll give that a whirl
Keyboard characters Dear Aunty, I bought a new Asus laptop locally last year and configured the keyboard to Spanish to get the lower set of characters |@#~€¬[]{}\ using “alt gr” with the 123456``+´çº keys and I am sure that they used to work with all applications. Now, the alt gr option doesn’t work with Gmail - annoying when you want to type the @ symbol for an email address. I have to cut and paste from, say, Wordpad. The “alt gr” characters do work in LibreOffice, Wordpad, names for new folders, sticky notes, etc. I have checked Gmail via Internet Explorer and the alt gr keys work fine, so it’s just a Google Chrome issue it seems. Can you tell me if it is possible to get these characters back for Gmail and if so how to do it. I can’t find anything in Google chrome settings that might be causing the problem. Hope you can help......best regards David Reply: A bit of a strange one, as I have tried the alt gr keys in W7, W8 and W10 in gmail in Chrome and they worked fine... So it suggests an issue with your system somewhere, as it does not affect all users. As they work fine in your Internet Explorer, then it does seem to be an issue with your Chrome. Whilst searching for a solution I found a few others have the same issue, but no sign of a solution. The only thing that I can suggest is perhaps the language settings in W8 and Chrome are not the same, which is causing a conflict... so check these. eg if you have the keyboard configured for Spanish, but Chrome configured for English?

WITH A background in family and matrimonial mediation, Life Coach Sara Bell helps Readers with their daily worries. If you are having difficulties with relationships, family, work or any other aspect of your life, then help is at hand.
In sickness and in health My husband and I don’t have a good marriage. We were both talking about divorce, and I was about to leave him when he got ill. He is now partially disabled, although he does get about with a stick and sometimes uses a wheelchair. He has an adapted car, and still works. I stayed to help him to begin with, but our relationship is far worse now and he constantly abuses me. I am so down and unhappy, I wish I’d have left sooner, but felt obligated. He has family who could help. Do you have any advice?
When any marriage is as miserable as yours, something needs to be done. If you were thinking about leaving before your husband became disabled, then you are to be commended for staying initially to look after him, but if he is independent and is also working, you really have no need to stay. Wouldn’t you both be happier apart? See your Solicitor, and talk to his family about them stepping in to help. Write to Sara in confidence. A pseudonym will be used if you wish. Sara reads all letters and can give a personal reply. Email your question to agonyaunt@roundtownnews.com or Sara is available for private consultations, telephone 650 054 467.
It’s hard making friends I am 12. We recently moved house and I changed schools. I am different from other boys and I find it difficult to make friends. I have hobbies like having reptiles for pets, I like to dress differently, and my family are Churchgoers. Friends don’t seem to want to be with me because of these things. Are you sure your friends don’t want to be with you because of what you do in your spare time? Lads in particular would be interested in seeing your reptiles, so why not invite them round? It’s fine if you want to dress differently and express yourself at your age - a lot of people do it. Have you thought about joining a club for keepers of reptiles? And is there a group at Church for the younger people? If you can find friends who share the same interests, then you have a good start. Also, see what’s going on at school, and go along to any after school activities. This is a good way to make friends.

St Patricks Day by caroline tyszka
ST PATRICKS Day is one of the most celebrated expat community events in Spain. This Thursday, 17th March, up and down the Costa Blanca, thousands of leprechauns, walking Guinness bottles, and four leaf clovers, will be out celebrating the Irish patron saint, Patrick. Events have been organised in many towns, with Cabo Roig holding a fabulous parade and party, as the strip turns into a sea of green for the day. Last year, the Cabo Roig parade was the largest in Spain, and, this year, they are hoping to retain that title, with bars and restaurants offering Irish food, drink, music and much more for all ages. Benidorm also has a reputation for hosting one of the most popular March 17th events, with The Shamrock Bar on Calle Gerona being the main focus for many years, as a sea of oranges and greens parties down the street to traditional Irish music. Many other venues, including the White Star, will also be holding events. Other towns offer smaller, but still fun, events, such as the Hepburns bar in Albir, who are offering promotions on Guinness, going all green for the day, and having live music between 5pm and 8pm. Winnie, from Hepburns, said “for anyone who wants to stay closer to home and miss the bustle of the Benidorm festivities, we offer a warm Irish welcome.” Tourism Ireland announced its ‘Global Greening’ line-up for the day, with new participants for 2016 including 7 World Trade Centre in New York, the Big Wheel in Paris, the light rail system in Addis Ababa, and the City Hall in Tel Aviv. The Boston Red Sox baseball team will also wear green on St Patrick’s Day. Ireland’s Tourism Minister, Paschal Donohoe, said, “St Patrick’s Day presents a unique and wonderful opportunity to promote Ireland worldwide.”

Venus and Mars are in cahoots and love and war are definitive opposing emotions that normally lead onwards to conflict and only possibly to resolve. However Venus is ensconced in Pisces this week and love can, and will, bring a good result all around. Let bygones be bygones and look within the parameters of your heart, where forgiveness lies. Piscean energies bring nurturing powers just when they are needed. This is a time to put things right on an emotional level, as there has been a lot of water passing under the bridge, and it is time to shine. Your tender love and care is both renown and embracing but even you can be fooled by passion, and a need to come to terms will over rule Finances are once again in the spotlight, as you have failed to make allowances for the current drain on your income. Unexpected outlay has clearly dipped the scales and a positive solution would be to tighten your belt and to try to make money work for you, not you for it. Mercury conjuncts with Neptune midweek; and this action has tipped the cart! Remove all the debris from your life. You appear to be clinging onto things from the past, for dear life; when nothing else should matter unless it matters to you. Moving on is heralded by Mercury squaring Saturn whereas the subsequent sextile with Pluto brings you to a time when your life should be becoming more poignant and less complicated. The Lion is evoked into action by portents seen all along the way this week. You need to commit, but you are not alone in needing to have assurances that protect your interests, for all concerned. Your actions are covered by the Jupiter trine with Pluto and these mighty Planets are combining to show you safely just the way to go, on this one! Ceres both opposes Jupiter and conjuncts Mercury this week. This double intrinsic action is finally calling time and asking you to properly consider closure in a matter that has snowballed. The truth can hurt somebody, but you are not to blame in any way. You can be sure that whilst that someone needs their comeuppance the right time isn’t now. Venus in her role as Planetary Goddess of Love crosses the Cosmos with the clear direction to enter into the dreamy, psychic energies of Pisces. Together these stalwarts of Love are sending out a very tender message peppered with mystique and arousing passion. You are pulling out all the stops, but this message of love needs to be fully requited too! Your opposing sign of Taurus appears to be getting the job done right now, so look at something another way, because it could very well be the olive branch that you need to bring things to a healthy compromise. You are angry, and the inner you denotes that this has been internalised and needs to be worked on to finally promote a quiet life for all. The triple effect of actions centring around Jupiter see an opposition of both Ceres and Mercury followed by a trine with Pluto. This week is bound to keep you on your by a trine with Pluto. This week is bound to keep you on your toes, and though there may be some last minute adjustments to your schedule; time is on your side to fit in what you will, and to pursue something to the bitter end if it’s necessary. Calming energies are wholly essential right now, because you cannot show your true colours in the current climate. If this means biting your tongue then rest assured that things will start to kick in very soon and you can cease to be implicated in something which has lost all sense of propriety. Mercury and Saturn pour oil on troubled waters. With Uranus way across the Cosmos this week it is high time that others started to stop feeling sorry for you and actively combined their time and talents to point you to where you ought to be. This is not because you have no say in the matter but because you need the boost that active energies combine to bring you the good result that you need. Mercury ensures that channels of communication are both open and ready and willing to be at your side, now that they are so very much needed. Balancing skills are tuned within you to emphasise the heart and soul you put successfully into everything that you turn your hand to. Just remember that you matter too and whatever that takes!
If It’s Your Birthday This Week
The year ahead is one in which you have invested in already, very wisely. However check that your intentions are mirrored and supported by the significant other who centres on your life anytime soon.
The list
I WAS very young and really before my time when I started to work together with Spirit, and I have always been protected as a result, have been well taken care of and always kept safe and one step, or more, ahead too. Since my Spiritual Journey continues then I can look back to various stages when Spirit first came to me and how they prepared me for every eventuality as it came my way. This doesn’t mean that I was scared and terrified, but it shows that Spirit chose to work with me and that I accepted the offer they threw my way because I could and because I wanted to. I was seven when friends of my Mothers began to contact me. Like any successful shopping list the outcome was to convince my Mother of the existence of life after death, and to ensure that her beliefs supported me as both the child, and self developing Medium that I was. My list wasn’t to buy goods at the supermarket however, but a list of thirteen of the friends of my Mother who wanted to prove their survival in what I know today to be the Spirit World. I wrote my list in secret with a leaky blue biro directly onto the black and white line guide from my Mother’s Basildon Bond Onionskin Writing paper. I had just begun to learn to do joined writing, but here was I writing down the names of those treasured friends of my Mother who somehow knew that broadcasting to me was going to be a part of their right to communicate together after the Earthly lives they had left behind. It would bring the joy of survival to my Mother and point me, somehow, in the right direction. I was thrilled with every name that came through, and I just knew that in time there would be a purpose for every letter scrawled by my shaking and underdeveloped hand. I was oblivious as to what it all meant, and yet I never ever questioned when a new name came to me in careless whisper, or snatched vision. There was always such a vibrational energy when Spirit came through me this way. The time came when there were no more names to be added to my list, and it was time to confront Mama. Initially she was surprised, then shocked and then the look on her face turned from a smile to a tear, a frown to a gasp. All the names on my list were correct, and each represented somebody who was dead, but whom I had never met. I was delighted to pass on my findings, and I knew they were for a reason and that that reason was unknown yet to me. I felt that I was due an explanation, but this was not immediately forthcoming. Yet too, did I feel that my Mother wanted to say something to me, but couldn’t or wouldn’t. I could not work out which. That night something happened that finally blew the lid on the whole thing! My Mother had asked me several times that there might have been a mistake on the last name on my list Marjorie Johnson. My Mother knew a Marjorie Peters, but she was still alive. I was sitting on the stairs of the house when the matte black telephone in the hall began to ring. It was usually silent at night, and it was cold in the hall. I can remember the tracks of tears falling from Mother’s eyes as she replaced the receiver. Her friend Marjorie Peters had married a Mr. Johnson the day before, and they had both been killed in a car crash on their honeymoon in France. Unfortunately the dead Marjorie Johnson on my list was the living Marjorie Peters in my Mother’s mind. I was a Medium, directly contacting the Spirit World...nothing much has changed there, I still am!

KENNY, MY Father came through to me in a reading with you. He seemed very relaxed and calm now that he is free from pain and can live again as I knew that he would. Lately though I have felt that he is no longer around me, and can you shed any light on where he has gone now? Ulla B.G. Hi Ulla. It is always a privilege to be able to work in this way, and I am delighted that I was able to pass on to you specific physical evidence of the survival of your Father. The Spirit World is the holding station for souls who have passed over. This means that for many there comes a time to move on and there are many who incarnate. Be very happy that your Father has made his decision to move on and this means he has most definitely made a choice to live again on this Earth. May The Universe bless you both!

Simply electric
by JACK TROUGHTON MUSIC FANS on the Costa Blanca are in for a treat on Sunday 20th March when blues and soul singer Lizzy Lee – the ‘Electric Lady’ – is the special guest of CBBlues.
Flowers by arrangement FLORAL DEMONSTRATOR Linda Hardman makes her first visit to the Marina Alta and Costa Blanca Floral Club on Thursday 17th March. The UK demonstrator will be on stage at the Salon de Actos, La Senieta, Moraira, to show off her skills in arranging flowers. Doors open at 2pm and everyone is asked to be seated by 2.45pm. Entrance is 5€ for members and 8€ for guests. The venue is adjacent to the large free car park and everyone is welcome.
One of the top names on the Valencia music scene, Madrid-born Lizzy plays the group’s Sunday Social Matinee at Bar Mediterraneo in Teulada, at 2pm. Born to Cuban parents, she spent her childhood between Florida and Spain and has always loved music and singing – her first audiences were family and friends. However, she turned professional after winning a singing competition and backed by the advice of her late grandmother. “Maybe winning gave me some self confidence to continue trying. The big point that made me decide to put myself into the music circuit, professionally, was the death of my grandmother a few years ago,” she explained. “She always told me to overcome my shame and believe in myself. She was sure I had something to contribute and something to say with my voice, my music and my songs. “Before her death I promised to at least try. It was at this point I started to search for musicians and creating a band...and now here I am, following a musical path. “There are certain feelings, gestures and impulses that normally you wouldn’t experience but with singing they just happen. Sometimes it is like electricity, other times it is sadness, passion or joy, but all of them speak about living. For me, music is my inner life.” Entrance is 10€ and to book in advance go to Lizzy Lee www.CBBlues.com.
World Champion Quartets in Calpe BARBERSHOP HARMONY has been around since the 1870s. Popular music success depended on sales of sheet music, so songs had to be easily “singable” with simple, straightforward melodies. The “phonograph” and the coming of radio prompted a shift in American popular music, although radio quartets kept close harmony singing popular with many amateur singers. In 1938, O. C. Cash and Rupert Hall formed the “Society for the Preservation and Propagation of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in the United States” Soon, groups were meeting throughout North America to sing barbershop harmony, and still do today,. as ‘barbershop’ has spread throughout the world. The Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers (SABS) was inaugurated in October 2008, and was the brainchild of Nico de las Peñas and his brother Jorge, after a visit to their first-ever Harmony College, in Coesfeld, Germany. See two world champion quartets for yourself on March 31st at the Casa de Cultura in Calpe. Almost six hundred singers are gathering for the SABS weekend, to celebrate with, and learn from, the masters.

Britney Spears is now 34 years of age, and believe it or not, by her own admission, is as good as computer ignorant. Talking to writer John Norris during an interview for the cover of V Magazine’s 100th issue, she said “My kids use the computer more than I do, I understand that a lot of people are into it, I have days where I write and stuff, but it’s really not for me,” well bless my soul. Asked if it was anything to do with internet trolls Britney replied “I’ve been doing this for 20 years, I don’t pay attention to that!” Good on you Britters!
´SINGING IN the Rain´ first appeared in 1952, and remains one of the greatest musicals of all time. Derek Hough, a Latin and ballroom dancer, actor and singer, has announced he will play the lead role in a stage production of the show on Broadway next January. He´s been part of USTV show ´Dancing with the Stars´ for a record 7 seasons and said “I am ecstatic that I’ll be able to extend my passion for performing and I can’t wait to show fans this production, it’s going to be like nothing they’ve seen me in before.” I wanna see it!
BRIE LARSON is only 26, but already she has lived at least two lives. She wrote and recorded an album when she was 16, although anymore on that subject is best left unsaid. Coming right up to date, Brie was a surprise, but worthy recipient of Best Actress at The Oscars for her role in 2015 film ´Room´ and on the ´any advice for your fans´ question said “You have to be really comfortable with yourself because people are going to tell you that your eyes are too brown or you’re this or you’re that, and if you’re not comfortable with yourself, you could get pretty freaked out.” Gotcha!
There’s no crying in Cryer’s memoirs JON CRYER, who turns 50 next month, is a New York born actor who had a lead role in one of the biggest USTV comedy shows of the recent times. He won 2 Emmys for his role as Alan harper, brother of Charlie and father of 10 year old Jake in Two and a Half Men for the full 12 seasons of the show. He was interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter recently about his memoir ´So What Happened´(out on April 7th from New American Library), and he described it as “a wry, self-deprecating and funny memoir that covers my 35-year career from getting cast in Torch Song Trilogy on Broadway in 1983 because I looked like Matthew Broderick.” After graduating from the Bronx High School of Science he won small acclaim playing Phil ´Duckie´ Dale in ´86 cult movie ´Pretty in Pink, ´ then had sixteen years of failed TV series and just-misses, he was nearly Chandler Bing on Friends, the character of Mr Pink in Reservoir Dogs was another near miss, before it all dropped into place with Two and a Half Men in 2002. The memoir inevitably contains tales of Charlie, like when he knocked on Cryer’s trailer door begging him “Dude! Dude! I need your help, Denise is coming over, and I need you to hide something for me,” after which he was handed a heavy shopping bag filled with porn. “I was prepared for the weirdest,” admitted Jon, “but it really was all pretty tame, mostly just topless mags,” now that’s what you call a surprise. Another surprise for Cryer came when the two men arrived in Las Vegas to start shooting, and expecting to be given the Sin City tour, Charlie instead went to his room and took a nap. Cryer’s memoir might well be a worthy read, and there’s only one way to find out.
WHILE GIGI Hadid modelled for Versace’s during Milan Fashion Week 10 days ago, she suffered a major wardrobe malfunction when a full strawberry topped bosom paid a visit to the camera lenses. Despite her youth Gigi continued unperturbed and afterwards wrote on Twitter, “Wardrobe malfunctions happen on the runway every day of the week and are unfortunate, lol, but what about the new VERSACE CHOKERS!” Earlier this month, photos were released of her French Vogue cover debut in which she appears fully nude atop two stacked boxes. Humm!
GRINDCORE IS an extreme genre of music that draws inspiration from some of the most abrasive sounding popular music genres including hardcore punk, thrash metal, crust punk, industrial and noise rock … wow! It’s remained pretty obscure since the late 80´s when it gathered some momentum … until now that is. 67 year old Canadian senior citizen known as The Grindmother is the lead singer of a group her grandson plays drums in, and her work has not gone unnoticed. Ozzy Osbourne tweeted ‘what the f**k?’ If you think you can deal with it watch ´GRINDMOTHER “Age of Destruction”
CHRIS RAMSEY began his career in comedy in 2007 by hosting an open-mic night in Newcastle upon Tyne. I´m sure he´s had to deal with many unusual situations over these last 9 years, but I don’t imagine he was truly ready to deal with what happened to him last week in a London hotel when he was dragged out of his room in his underpants by police who mistook him for a knife-wielding madman. It came about after he was falsely identified by hotel staff … “I thought it must be a wind-up” he said “10 minutes later it could´ve been very embarrassing.”

Pablo Bloom supports the Manfreds
MorairaTeulada U3A
by CAROLINE TYSZKA LOCAL TALENT, Pablo Bloom supported the Manfreds at a packed Benidorm Palace over the weekend. Pablo Bloom, the Costa Blanca’s talented musician and singer, got to cross something off his wish list on Sunday evening, as he took to the Benidorm Palace stage to support the Manfreds, who performed at the venue as part of their 2016 tour. The Manfreds line up included not just one but both front men, Paul Jones & Mike D’arbo, who, along with the other band members, took the audience back in time, with hits such as “handbags and gladrags” “do wah diddy diddy” and “build me up buttercup.” Speaking to RTN, Pablo said “Playing in the Benidorm Palace was on my wish list for a long time now; such an amazing venue! Also, I got to meet the Manfreds in the sound check. They were very nice and friendly to this strange guy with the cheap keyboard (me), and proved to be not only hit record makers, but also top musicians.” Jenny Renn, another well-loved local singer and comedienne, went to see the show with friends. Jenny said: “I was incredibly fortunate to have been at the Benidorm Palace to watch a fine bit of Nostalgia with the Manfreds, and one of our own, the incredibly talented Pablo Bloom.” In addition to the four original members of the Manfreds, the
Pablo Bloom at Benidorm Palace
audience were treated to Tom McGuinness, from McGuinness Flint, performing alongside them, in a show that lasted an hour and half. Jenny went on to say: “It was full to capacity, so professionally run, with Christine, Vincente and David Climent at the helm. The whole place was electric. Pablo blew everyone away, so entertaining.” Whilst Pablo’s fans are waiting for his upcoming appearance on Spain’s Got Talent, it was lovely to see him shine at the Palace, not only showing his outstanding musical talent but the showmanship that makes him so unique. Pablo said “thanks to the fantastic audience, to the Manfreds and the Benidorm Palace for making me feel so welcome!”
THE VENUE for the monthly general meeting, on Monday 4th April, 2016, is Salón S.L., Avenida Mediterráneo, Teulada. The doors do not open until 9.30am in order for the committee to prepare the room. New members are welcome to join, and can do so from 9.30am until 10.30am. Application forms may be downloaded from the website, and the joining fee is 10€. During that time, members will be able to join groups and also find out about travel and cultural events. Once the meeting has started at 10.30am. these desks will be closed. The speaker this month is Peter Atkinson, whose talk will be on the life and work of the Catalan Architect, Antoni Gaudí(1852-1926), who was responsible for much of the art nouveaux (or modernist) architecture in Barcelona, most notably residences such as Casa Batilo and Casa Mila for the wealthy industrialist, together with Park Guell and other projects for the same client and, of course, his master-work, still unfinished, the Sagrada Familia church. He, more or less single-handily, put Barcelona on the tourist map. For further information please go to the website www.u3amoraira-teulada.org.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

Expressions with “soler” When people start learning Spanish they often assume that every word in English has an exact equivalent in Spanish.
Although this assumption is very quickly dispelled, it always takes us longer to remember words and phrases when we cannot translate them directly back into our own language. It is also a lot harder to explain their meaning. We are going to spend a few articles looking at individual words in Spanish that do not have a direct translation in English. Our first example is the verb “soler”. As we do not have a direct equivalent in English, we have to use several words to explain what it means, and the nearest equivalent is: “to be in the habit of”. Very often when translating the word in the present tense we substitute it for “usually”. However, this can be confusing as “soler” is a verb and “usually” is an adverb. So, how do we use this wonderful word? Well in the present tense “soler” is a root-changing verb, so the six forms of the conjugation are: “suelo, sueles, suele, solemos, soléis, suelen”. This is then followed by the infinitive of another verb. So, for example, we say things like “Suelo leer antes de dormir” – (I am in the habit of reading before sleeping), or in other words “I usually read before I go to sleep). Here’s another example “solemos salir los sábados” (we are in the habit of – that is,
we usually – go out on Saturdays). This use of “soler” plus the infinitive is a very common way of expressing the idea of “usually”. There is also an adverb that means “usually” which is “normalmente” which gives us an alternative. Therefore, if I want to say “I usually watch TV in the evening”, I can say “Normalmente veo la tele por la tarde” or “Suelo ver la tele por la tarde”. The difference between these two is minimal and hard to explain. To all intents and purposes they mean exactly the same thing. Like all verbs, “soler” can be used in other tenses, although we have to use a bit of common sense to realize that it is more likely to occur in some tenses than in others. Most common of all is the past continuous tense: “solía”. If I say “Solía nadar todos los días” I am saying: “I was in the habit of swimming every day”. The most common way of expressing this idea in English is with the expression “used to” - “I used to swim every day”. Now there is another way of saying this is Spanish! As well as “Solía nadar todos los días”, we could say “nadaba todos los días” (I swam, or I used to swim, every day). What is the difference? In reality very little indeed. We are in the realms of “finer points”. The sentence with “solía” perhaps empha-
sizes more distance in time and contrast with the present, but really the difference is minimal and certainly both can be translated in the same way. As you can see, I’m already running into difficulties explaining a word which does not have a direct equivalent in English. To sum up, there are two paths we can take when understanding expressions like “solía nadar” and “suelo leer” in English. We can either translate them literally and clumsily: (“I was in the habit of swimming” “I am in the habit of reading”) or find the nearest equivalent in English, (“I used to swim”, “I usually read”) on the understanding that the nearest equivalent in English may already have another alternative in Spanish (Nadaba, “normalmente leo”). Well, whoever said that learning Spanish was a straightforward affair? I’ve got a really nice word for next week which I will do my best not to complicate, though I’m afraid I can’t promise. See you then.

How much does it cost to build a house in Spain? (Final part) To proceed with last week article on the costs of materials and labour involve in building a house in Spain, this week we will provide a break down of all prices entailed in that activity. Let me say however that the prices made available here will varied depending on the need and personal circumstances of the suppliers and contractor employed, so please view these prices as a guide only and not as an exact bill of quantities. I have to say however, that I have performed a complete measurement of all items required to build a typical house as described below, so although it is intended to be used as a guide the work has been done professionally and accurately. Let us first imagine a particular type of house so that the theoretical house can be measured and quantified. Let us firs give answers to the questions presented on last week article. So, we are dealing here with a typical Spanish country home construction, built to comply with all legal regulations, especially with those dealing with energy savings. This hypothetical house is erected on one floor within a building plot 300m2 in size, with all services connected to the plot. To be more exact, below we have provided a description of the different aspects taken
into account to produce the costs. As I mentioned before, a complete bill of quantities have been produced for this article, together with all the costs involved in the construction of this house. Please let me know if any reader has any queries on any aspect of the prices or if any reader needs a more accurate breakdown of costs. Type of construction: Let us suppose that we have an individual house and not an apartment etc. General Market situation: In recession. Access to site: Easy. Site topography: Almost on a horizontal plane. Exact location of site: Jacarilla: (Alicante) House shape: Rectangular shape, bungalow type. Number of bedrooms and bathrooms: Two bedrooms, one bath room and one guest’s W.C. Finishes: To choose from high quality, average and basic finishes we have opted for average finishes. Type of soil for foundation excavation: Let us say, compacted sand. Type of structure: Reinforced concrete frame with concrete slabs. Installation services: Let us installed all central heating pipes but no main boiler or radiators, this is normally done in Spain as most pipes are recessed in the walls but we do not want to spend money on boilers or radiators at
this stage but we may do it in the near future without having to spoil wall finishes. We do have however up to 70% of all our sanitary hot water heating from thermal solar panels, needed by law now days. No gas installation, we will use the old butane gas bottle. Type of façade construction: Cavity brick wall with thermal insulation, double glazed aluminium windows and our walls are rendered out side and plastered internally. Type of roofs: Let us say we have a mixed roof with a portion with double pitched roof finished off with round Roman tiles and another portion of flat roof to be used as a solarium. Finishes: Floors and bathrooms and kitchen walls are covered with ceramic tiles. With these elements decided on, we are able to provide an estimate of the total cost of construction and this cost should be pretty accurately within the standard local market price. Let us see the prices divided in main sections. 1 Plot preparation and removal of top soil etc: 2.869,30 € 2 Foundations: 4.908,81 € 3 Structure: 21.619,00 € 4 Façades: 18.432,99 € 5 Internal Partitions: 9.693,01 € 6 Installations and services: 5.306,92 € 7 Roofs: 6.336,29 € 8 Finishes: 14.472,70 € 9 Equipment for bathrooms and kitchen:
4.676,09 10 Plot finishing off, fencing etc (Plot size 300m2.) 19.949,65 € 11 Quality control and site testing of materials: 723,90 € 12 Safety and health at work including provisional toilets and showers for workers, helmets etc: 12.183,48 € Subtotal of Material and labours cost: 131.172,27 € Contractors Overheads approx.12%: 15.740,67 € Contractors profit approx. 8%: 10.493,78 € Sub Total: 157.406,72 € VAT 8%: 12.592,54 € Total: 169.999,26 There are other costs that should be added to the cost of this construction such as architects fees, legal licences, etc but that we will require another article to quantify more exactly and carefully these extra expenses. Expenses that when they are not known and are discovered after one has embarked oneself into the construction of a house could turn out to be a nasty experience. Please note that these costs are based on a design which is not shown here for obvious reason. Different designs may vary the costs.

Marinated chicken kebabs
THESE SPICY kebabs are ideal on their own with a fresh salad or as part of a choice of barbecued meats. They are best prepared in advance and left to stand for at least an hour before cooking.
• 350g skinless chicken meat, cut into cubes • 1 tbls tomato ketchup • A small piece of fresh ginger, peeled and grated (or 1 tsp powdered ginger) • 1 tsp mild paprika • The grated rind and juice of an orange • 1 garlic clove, crushed • 1 tbls olive oil
1. Combine all the ingredients for the marinade in a large bowl then stir in the chicken pieces. Set aside for at least an hour. 2. Thread the marinated chicken onto skewers then grill or barbecue until the chicken is well browned on the outside and cooked through in the middle. Serves 2 Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 10-15 minutes
Tip If you are using bamboo skewers, soak them in water beforehand to stop them from burning on the barbecue. Don’t cram too many pieces of chicken on each skewer. Leave a little space between each piece and this will help them brown and cook evenly.

March madness for Giving4Giving by caroline tyszka THE GIVING4GIVING Cancer Support charity bounced into the month of March with their annual sponsored dog walk at the weekend. Working with Doggie Angells, the Giving4Giving charity organised a sponsored dog walk on Sunday 6th March. Despite it being British Mother’s Day, around 35 dogs, with their owners of course, set off along the Terra Mítica road in beautiful sunshine. All the dogs behaved themselves, with the 5 km stroll raising 1,400€, much needed funds for the local animal rescue Doggie Angells, and the local cancer support charity AECC. Gary, from Giving4Giving, said: “It has been a brilliant start to the year, with so much more to come. Thank you to everyone who has supported us.” With the new Giving4Giving charity shop in Finestrat almost ready for its grand opening on Monday 14th March, and
everything being priced at just 1€, buyers are sure to find many bargains. However, donations and volunteers are still urgently needed. In a new fundraising adventure, on 24th April, there will be an opportunity to help raise funds for Aspanion, the baby and children’s cancer charity in Spain, by doing an abseil, near Orcheta. The free abseil is an ideal chance to try something different whilst raising funds for a worthy cause, and will
be followed by a charity luncheon at 2pm at the Mollie Dos restaurant in Finestrat. Interested parties can either do just the abseil or the lunch, or both, with tickets for the meal priced at 12€ (3 courses including wine). There will be entertainment, an auction and a raffle. For further information regarding the abseil, either contact Kris 678 43 70 55 and quote “Gary” or, for general enquiries, call Gary 603 13 76 97.

U3A shoot out MEMBERS OF the Digital Photography Group of U3A Vall del Pop enjoyed a visit to the Monastery of Santa Maria la Valldigdna in Simit. Group Leader Peter Tomlin made sure everyone had the opportunity to take a variety of pictures of the old building – which dates back to 1297. The monastery was occupied by monks until 1835 when they were forced to leave. The building was then plundered and many artefacts removed. However, it is currently undergoing a major restoration and much of the project has been completed. And following the ‘shoot’, the group relaxed and enjoyed lunch at a local cafe.

Massage for those living with cancer by Laura Gregory IT’S A sad fact of life that cancer touches most of us in some way during our lives. Whether being a cancer patient, or a partner, family member, loved one or friend. I’m no different. My sister was diagnosed with cancer of the colon 2 years ago and my father has leukaemia. My calling in life is as a beauty therapist. I trained at the Cambridge School of Beauty Therapy and am a fully qualified Therapist with Cidesco, Cibtac and Itec qualifications. I have always been interested in the holistic approach within beauty, especially massage. I had heard that therapists were giving massage to cancer patients and actually doing more harm than good. I knew that Cancer was a Con-
traindication (an indication that a therapy may do harm) and started to look in to this further, thereby discovering that now there are actual courses for Oncology massage. I learned that Oncology massage is a contraindication only IF the therapist has not been trained in Oncology Massage. I was delighted to seize this wonderful opportunity as the therapist is “Somebody who doesn’t takes but gives” making the sufferer feel more like a person less like a patient, sentiments I totally agree with. The training has taught me many things. Firstly, a very thorough consultation has to take place before a treatment can take place. Secondly, the massage is adapted in many ways – every cancer patient has different reactions to the treatment they are undergoing (2 people being treated for Colon cancer will react very differently even if taking some medication etc.). Also surgery and location of a tumour affects how the person can be massaged. Thus any massage is unique to that person’s needs. The benefits are both physical and emotional and include: Increases Relaxation Decreases oedema and lymphedema Improves sleep Decreases symptoms related to chemo and radiation, such as fatigue nausea, diarrhoea and loss of appetite Decreases anxiety and depression The Oils used can help with scarring after surgery This isn’t some theoretical list, I should know
– I have massaged my father and have seen first hand the relief he has shown – even his consultant at Denia Hospital is happy at this complimentary therapy. I am available for oncology massages at Blush Beauty Salon in Alcalali and have agreed with Teresa (the owner) to offer oncology massages to anyone living with cancer, it is also for people who have a history of cancer, this is because they may have had lymph nodes removed. I am also at Blush on Tuesday/Thursday and the contact telephone number is 966 482 106 but appointments for other days can be made! I am also now working at MABS in Benidorm every Wednesday 10am till 2pm. TEULADA MORAIRA Lions Club has donated a 1,500€ electrically operated bed to the MABS Cancer Support Group to help the care and support it can offer. The cancer charity is looking to buy two of the beds, which not only offer greater comfort to the patient but also make it easier for carers. MABS President Jacqui Phillips approached the Lions to ask for a donation – and the club responded by meeting the full cost of one bed. As a result, Lions President David Platt and representatives of the club presented Jacqui with a cheque for 1,500€ at the MABS Meeting Room at Policlinica IMED in Teulada.
Tim Saunders Independent unbiased car reviewer
Mitsubishi Outlander IT IS interesting to see how technology falls down through the ranks. When I road tested the Rolls Royce Ghost a few years ago it shared a unique piece of technology with Volvo.
That was intelligent cruise control that kept the vehicle at a safe distance from the car in front, automatically braking and accelerating as required. Over time more and more manufacturers have included this bit of kit in their models. The latest one is Mitsubishi with its Outlander. The 2.2-litre diesel that I test uses this to great effect when we are on the motorway to London. I find the cruise control on this 4x4 one of the easiest to operate and the automatic gearbox with manual mode adds to making my life easier on what can be a rather dull commute to the city. It is also good to see the traditional handbrake, which I do prefer over the new fancy electric ones because it gives more control to the driver. As we go on a Sunday we do not need to worry about the congestion charge and it is a great opportunity for Caroline and her parents to visit Uncle Harry who lives in St Johns Wood, my favourite part of London because it is so homely and welcoming. The Outlander incorporates two seats (which form a third row) that neatly fold into the boot when not required. These are fine for our two little daughters Harriett (4) and Heidi (2) and easily accommodate their child seats. Space is a bit tight for the adult fitting the children in their seats and after a bit of contortion they are able to jump down from the vehicle. When these are in use boot space is minimal but there is still room for a few bags, which is useful. “It’s a comfortable ride,” says Lin, Caroline’s mum. “There’s plenty of leg space in the middle and more than in other similar vehicles.” I tend to agree and the seats are pretty supportive, too. When we overtake other 4x4s it becomes clear that the Outlander is not as high off the ground as a Land Rover Discovery, for instance. I’m not complaining about this because sometimes 4x4s can feel too high, which can make some passengers feel uneasy. The ride height is just right for us and because the driver’s seat is electrically adjustable and heated, combined with the fact that the steering column moves forward, back and up and down, this ensures that a fairly perfect driving position can be achieved. It is easy for the driver to rest an arm on the side of the door while driving and if it was better padded this would be more comfortable. It’s not a good habit to get into though and I should stick to the 10 to 2 position on the steering wheel. But long journeys can affect driving habits. When accelerating there is a bit too much of a rattle from the diesel unit for my liking but it is responsive and seems to be pretty efficient, travelling 100 miles or so on one bar of fuel. The test model is finished in black with blacked out rear windows, giving it oodles of street-cred. I also like the distinctive alloy wheels. In my opinion the side profile is its best angle while the front just doesn’t gel for me. I think I’d prefer a bit of a chrome grille or something just to break up the bonnet from the bumper. A neat touch, shared with other luxury vehicles like Range Rover and Rolls Royce, is the electrically operated boot, which shuts itself. This is all very well but I find it takes too long, especially when it is raining hard. You just want to be able to shut the boot quickly and make a dash for it. Unfortunately, the Outlander is home to another disappointing satellite navigation system that does not recognise the village of Tadley in Hampshire. Not a problem if you don’t need to visit but if you do, like us, we have to stop and ask a local. We usually always leave home with a map but I thought we could rely on this system. “Does it have a Points of Interest function?” he asks. I search and find that it does. “Put the Queens College Arms in and it should know that.” Thank goodness it does and so we get to our destination. You don’t expect to have to stop to ask when you have a sat nav. There’s also an electric tilt/slide glass sunroof, which is good to see because not everyone wants to rely on the air conditioning. Manager of the Month, for March, is sponsored by Danny at the Sarita Restaurant in Albir, who provide a fabulous authentic Indian cuisine menu. Rugby La Vila by patricia thompson LAST SUNDAY, 6th March, the first team played at home against Les Abelles Valencia, and won, convincingly, 35-19. La Vila stay top of the table and have now qualified for the play-offs, which will be on April 24th, May 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th. The finals will be on June 5th and 12th. It looks as though the first home play-off game will be on Sunday 1st May, at 12.30pm. However, there are still some league games to play. The next home game will be on Sunday 20th March at 12.30pm, against Barcelona University Club, who are currently 5th in the league. Tickets will be 5€ for adults and free for under12s, and can be bought at www.instanticket.es for the same price as at the gate. As usual the Argentinian barbecue will be available, a large hot roll for 4€. If you want to join in the after-match meal with the players, book your ticket at the bar. It is paella and a drink for 5€. The shop will be open on Sunday for sales of the new Rugby La Vila hoodie for 25€, and there will be live music from Mick and Peter
(Shades of Grey). Next Weekend, the first team has no official game, since the Spanish National Team will play Portugal, in Madrid, next Saturday 12th, March at 4pm. On that Saturday, the Under 12s will travel to Tarragona to take part in their Mini Rugby Festival. At 5pm that day, the club will be open for watching, on TV, the England v Wales. VI Nations game. The bar will be open. La Vila Rugby Club is situated at Carretera El Pantano, Vil-

Alternatively, take the Villajoyosa by-pass, and take the middle exit, at the first roundabout bear right towards the motorway entrance and at the second roundabout bear left towards the mountain. If you are interested in joining La Vila contact Jason Craig on 659 67 47 68 or Ignacio Davila 608 06 82 08 or email oficina@rugbylavila.net.
JAVEA BOWLS Club made the long trip to play top of the table San Luis Orcas in the Costa Blanca Winter League, and came away with a fantastic 10-2 victory. The Orcas were previously unbeaten this season, but Javea proved to be much too strong for them on the day. The winning teams were Skipped by John North, Clive English, Chris Evans and Nick Cole. This win puts Javea level with close neighbours Benitachell, but still leaves both clubs 20 points behind the Orcas. With just six matches remaining in the league, everything looks set for an exciting finish to the season, especially on Wednesday 23rd March, when Javea entertain Benitachell at the Inn on the Green. On Friday 11th March and Saturday 12th March Javea is holding its Club Championship Finals, so, if you have some spare time why not go along, enjoy the bowls and have a quiet drink at the club.

Formula 1, 2016 season changes
LOVE IT or loathe it, the greatest car chase is about to return to our screens. With pit talk already centred around how fast Mercedes are, and their predicted dominance of the coming season, the Australian GP will kick off the season as always from Friday 18th to Sunday 20th March. With some major rule changes planned for next year, there are only minor tweaks to the regulations for 2016. Exhaust layout - to improve engine noise, teams must now use separate exhaust pipes for the turbine and wastegate, rather than the single exhaust used in 2015. The rules allow for the option of using a twinpipe for the wastegate, though any exit must not be more than 100mm from the main pipe. Power unit allowance - with the number of championship rounds increasing from 19 to 21 this year, the number of power units each driver is allowed to use over the course of the season has increased from four to five. Consequently, grid penalties will only kick in when each driver uses a sixth of any one of the six disparate power unit elements. Power unit development - Each manufacturer will be allowed 32 power unit tokens for in-season development. They may use these at their discretion. Additionally, whereas, previously, no manufacturer could supply more than one specification of power unit, engines homologated in previous seasons may now be re-homologated for use in 2016.
Cockpit safety - the head protection structures either side of the cockpit are now 20mm higher than before and able to resist a compression load of 50N per 30 seconds. Tyres - To encourage variation between race strategies, Pirelli are now making three, rather than two, of their five dryweather tyre compounds (including the new purple-marked ultrasoft) available at each event. The Italian company will allocate two sets of tyres for the race (only one of which must be used) and one set which can only be used in Q3 (the softest of the chosen three compounds). Each driver will then be able to choose 10 further sets of tyres from the three compounds to take their weekend allocation to 13. Virtual Safety Car - The Virtual Safety Car (VSC) may now be used in practice sessions as well as races, in order to reduce stoppage times, while DRS will now be reenabled immediately after a VSC period. Accident analysis - For the purpose of accident analysis, each car must be fitted with a high speed camera, and each driver must wear in-ear accelerometers at each event and all tests which are attended by more than one team. Testing - The number of pre-season tests has been slashed from three to two, meaning that the teams may participate in 8 days of track running, before the start of the new season, rather than the 12 days they had in 2015.
