A word from JT EXPAT CHARITIES are once again winning hearts and minds across the region, this time being given an official thumbs up for the help they offer hospital patients of all nationalities. Volunteers are always fund raising and many donate money or buy equipment for hospitals and health centres across the region, helping improve care for those who most need it. And at RTN Towers, the guys are always happy to acknowledge the work being put in by charities; the British Consulates and Embassy in Madrid are always quick to thank people giving up their time to help others - and so it is always good to see the Spanish authorities singing their praises as health chiefs bring them into the fold. THE EU referendum continues to dominate the news and this week Boris and his boys were named the official ‘leave’ campaign by the Electoral Commission. Vote Leave is the imaginative name for Team Out. The horses, as they say, are on the track for the 23rd June gallop. Readers are beginning to ask where they can find the case simply put by both sides. Turn to page six and below the story of the commission’s decision, there are links to the official government ‘remain’ argument – in fact, the very same info being controversially popped through letter boxes in the UK. Hang on in there for a reply from the other side.

Young turtles go wild by Caroline Tyszka BENIDORM’S PONIENTE Beach was the location for three young Loggerhead turtles to be released back into the wild this week watched by crowds of well wishers. The juveniles caught in fishing nets had been taken to the Oceanogràfic Centre in Valencia to spend several months recovering from their injuries and traumas. They were fit enough to venture into the Mediterranean on Tuesday morning and the release, the first for the town, was attended by Toni Perez, the mayor, Celia Calabuig, Oceanogràfic director, and various councillors. Mr Perez said: “This highlights the importance of teaching and educational work between everyone”, saying the Oceanogràfic and council wanted to share the experience with the public. Two of the turtles were caught in trawler nets off the coast between Valencia and Gandia and the third had been recovered off Castellon. The ARCA del Mar - Area Recovery and Conservation of Marine Fauna - explained how the turtles first went into a small hyperbaric chamber at the centre which helped removed air bubbles from inside them, known as recompression treatment. A total of 257 sea turtles have been treated at the ARCA del Mar Oceanogràfic since 2003. Further details of the work carried out at the centre can be found at www.oceanografic.org.

Vote Leave’ official Brexit campaign
by JACK TROUGHTON VOTE LEAVE has been named by the Electoral Commission as the official lead campaign urging voters to leave the European Union in June’s referendum. The group fronted by senior Conservative Party figures Boris Johnson, Michael Gove, and Chris Grayling, and chaired by Labour MP Gisela Stuart was the front-runner before Wednesday’s decision. Nigel Farage, who backed rivals ‘Grassroots Out’, congratulated Vote Leave, and said UKIP would continue to play a large part in the ‘leave’ campaign ahead of the crucial ballot. He said it was always his party’s position to get both campaigns working together for victory on polling day.”The decision of UKIP to back Grassroots Out was on the basis that they saw the importance of the immigration issue...we wanted to reach out across the country at a grassroots level and work with everyone from the left centre and right of British politics to get our country out of the EU.” The Vote Leave group is now able to spend the £7 million war chest is has collected for the campaign and receive £600,000 of taxpayers’ cash to meet administration costs. And it will also be able to deliver a leaflet to every home in Britain. Brexit campaigners have been infuriated by the pro-EU Government by already sending out its own publically-funded mail shot arguing the case for continued membership of the union. Chief Executive of the independent Electoral Commission, Claire Bassett announced the decision, saying: “After careful consideration, the commission decided that Vote Leave Ltd better demonstrated that it has the structures in place to insure the views of other campaigners are represented in the delivery of its campaign.” A spokesman for Vote Leave said the focus was always on a vote to leave “and the £350 million we send to Brussels every week which we want to spend on priorities like the NHS. “We will continue to work constructively with everyone who wants to campaign for a leave vote.” The government’s official ‘remain’ leaflet is at present unlikely to reach expats living in Spain but can be found at www.gov.uk/government/publications/why-the-governmentbelieves-that-voting-to-remain-in-the-european-union-is-the-best-decision-for-the-uk/ why-the-government-believes-that-voting-to-remain-in-the-european-union-is-the-bestdecision-for-the-uk. Thieves hunted on social media SOCIAL MEDIA networks are helping clamp down on crime in cities with images of suspected criminals and information being quickly shared. Security cameras at the Club Deportivo Arena in Alicante caught a young man on camera stealing a bicycle – pictures sent to the police but already circulating on networks. Pictures showed the offender approach two bicycles secured in the parking area and after looking around to check there are no witnesses, quickly open the lock securing one of the bikes and quickly disappearing with it. The bike was owned by a boy playing football with his team and the pictures were sent by the manager of the sports center to the police. The images also began circulating via social networking and it is hoped the move will quickly lead to the thief’s arrest.

CHARITY VOLUNTEERS were publicly recognised for their valuable part in the long term care and recovery of patients at a Costa Blanca hospital on Wednesday. Health chiefs signed a ground-breaking official agreement with charitable associations at La Pedrera Hospital in Denia; promising to work together to provide “compassion and humanity” for people admitted to its wards. La Pedrera is a Spanish health service hospital and welcomes people from as far away as Torrevieja, Orihuela, Alcoy, and even Murcia. Patients are the chronically ill, people needing long term care during recovery from accidents or strokes, palliative care, cancer patients, and those suffering from dementia. HELP of Denia and the Marina Alta is the lead international charity involved along with the Spanish association Federation Marina Alta Solidaria, and church charity Caritas – however, an earlier presentation of a new ultrasound scanner illustrated the value of charitable help. The portable scanner was described by doctors as “invaluable” and donations to buy the machine were made by HELP, Cancer Care Javea, the Masonic Homes of Valencia Association, and Freemasons Lodges Deportiva 83, of Javea, and Armonia de Ifach, of Calpe. Medical teams say a portable machine “was much better” as the hi-tech gizmo can be wheeled to patients rather than taking very sick person to the scanner. BARGAIN And the charities even got a bargain. They negotiated a 6,000€ discount for a demonstration model but the supplier agreed to give a new machine for the same price. Guest of honour at the signing of the accord was Oscar Zurriaga, the General Director of Investigation, Innovation, Technology, and Quality for the health service in Valencia. He said the new partnership between health professionals and charities seeking to aid sick people was a very important step forward. “Volunteers can really help people who are incapacitated through ill health in this hospital,” he said. “I think it is very important this relationship exists – working together with health professionals and helping to care for patients.” La Pedrera Hospital Director Jaume Morera said the agreement brought together the different disciplines of medicine with volunteers to achieve the best quality of care for patients in the hospital for long periods of time. “And together they make sure the patient gets individual attention, with treatment that was compassionate, humane and ethical,” he said. TOUCH The director also believed the personal touch brought by volunteers would provide company and conversation to patients; while also playing an important role in helping families at the hospital. HELP President Candy Wright said the charity had been involved with La Pedrera for nine years and also worked at the new Marina Salud Denia Hospital – a private public health project. “I am very proud because we have been involved since we started, not just at this hospital, but since 1986, those of us who can speak Spanish have been on hand to help those who cannot,” she said. “I am also very proud that all these other wonderful charities are here to help patients at the hospital as well.” Candy said she had introduced Cancer Care to La Pedrera, a charity prepared to help health practitioners attend courses to keep their specialist training up to date. And she said the formal agreement would allow volunteers to have an official status and be easily identified by the public within the hospital.

Animal care continues Smiles at by Jack Troughton
ABANDONED AND lost animals in a Marina Alta town will continue to have a “second chance” of life with a new association becoming responsible for their care. Animal charity LAPS – the Local Animal Protection Society – handed over to its replacement, as yet unnamed, last week after running a Pego shelter for six years. And over the period, the hard-working team of volunteers raised nearly 125,000€ and was able to provide a place of safety and rescued almost 2,000 animals; many moved to new homes. The lease on the land occupied by the LAPS Shelter expired for the second time on 31st March. There has been a long running battle with the local authority to be given a new home and
receive funding. However, the new association has now taken over all aspects of caring for the abandoned animals in the area and when work is completed on a new site, it is understood they will be moved to a sanctuary that provides better working conditions for the volunteers and improved accommodation for the dogs and cats. LAPS President Chrissie Edwards said: “THE LAPS team of volunteers and supporters are delighted the many animals dumped at the site will benefit from a second chance of happiness. “Everybody involved, especially the cleaners, are thanked for the help they have given to this huge number of animals. They are all wished a peaceful and less stressful retirement.” She said funds remaining in the charity bank account would be made

available to the new group – it is hoped it will soon be named - to be used for the continued care “of abused and lost souls”. Chrissie added: “Many thanks to everyone who has supported the charity, it is hoped continued help will be given to the new association.” Further inquiries can be made by calling 662 345 044 or 656 361 136.
Blood donors needed ALFAZ DEL Pi will be holding a blood donation session on Wednesday 20th April at the Casa del Cultura. The session will run from 4.30 pm to 8.30 pm. The transfusion service was said to quickly boost stocks. The blood groups most in need at this time are O +, O- and A +.
The Make A Smile team, a charity supporting EMAUS youngsters, was out in force at the Los Arcos Restaurant and raised nearly 800€ for its ongoing work. And organiser Ann Martin was pleased all the hard work beforehand was rewarded with such “a lovely afternoon”. She said: “It was a lovely day and the people who did come and wander around the beautiful gardens really enjoyed themselves – there was a real feel good factor and that made all the work worthwhile.” Make A Smile will benefit from the proceeds of a charity auction on Friday 22nd April at the El Cid Restaurant, Benidoleig. Viewing starts and noon and the sale begins at 1pm. The auction website www.elcidspain.com has full details and people wishing to book a table for lunch can call 96 640 4364.

by JACK TROUGHTON EXPATS HOPING to qualify for the ‘bono social’ offered by energy companies have been turned away after being told the subsidy only applies to Spanish pensioners. The scheme is intended to help the most vulnerable receive power – and pensioners on low incomes, large families, single parent families and families where all members are unemployed, can apply to electricity giant Iberdrola via social services departments in town halls. Retired RTN readers, who lost the winter fuel allowance last September, saw an opportunity to make their Euros stretch just a bit further and started the process. However, they were disappointed to learn they did not qualify after obtaining the paperwork and presenting it to a local authority. David Hodgson, an 82-year-old living in Mil Palmeras, near Pilar de la Horadada, visited his local social services office and was given an application form. “I thought a discount might come in handy.” He was told to complete the document, make an appointment at the main offices in Torrevieja, and take it with other paperwork. David, who has lived in Spain, took two buses to reach the City of Salt. “I sat down and explained the situation. The lady said ‘I am sorry but you have had a wasted journey here, it’s not possible’. “She said you needed to be in receipt of a Spanish pension to be able to apply – I just wanted to relay my experience.” He added: “As you know I – and others – now miss out of the Winter Fuel Allowance. I am on a state pension along with a company pension and thought I was a likely candidate.” And 85-year-old Brian Fussell, who lives in Denia, visited an Iberdrola office to inquire about the
bono social subsidy and was again told to apply via social services. “I also went to Repsol, who supply my gas, and they knew nothing about it; it is apparently not well known about even in the Spanish community.” David and his wife have lived in Spain for 26 years and said: “It turns out you have to be in receipt of a Spanish pension; if you don’t have one, you don’t get the subsidy. “But as I understand it, that’s against EU rules, because they are treating you differently to a Spanish pensioner.” Social service workers explained it was difficult for anyone to obtain the bono social as there were very particular criteria involved – but in any case, the UK state pension took expats over a payment threshold. RTN is backing the campaign to restore the winter fuel payment, a fight supported by both David and Brian.
Airport arrests
NATIONAL POLICE officers have reported they made 50 arrests at the Alicante-Elche airport in the first quarter of 2016. Figures released by the police show an 80 percent increase in arrests when compared to the same period in 2015. More than half of the arrests were related to the use of forged passports where 28 people arrested, including men, women and children were from countries such as Albania, China, Morocco and Syria.

Bars raided over gambling by Caroline Tyszka NATIONAL POLICE swooped on several Benidorm bars taking illegal bets for Saturday´s Grand National. The Generalitat Valencia´s special gaming police unit raided five premises in the town and questioned five British citizens over gambling. Police had been aware for some time of illegal gaming in the resort; they decided to wait until the high profile race at Aintree before making their move. The five suspects come from La Nucia, Alfaz del Pi and Benidorm and could face charges of illegal gambling, fraud and money laundering. Officers seized equipment and money linked to gambling including betting slips, four laptop computers, two television monitors, three sorting machines, and other items relating to betting. Many people enjoy a flutter on the Grand National but should be aware that gambling is heavily regulated in Spain and any bet must be declared to the tax authorities. Benidorm has five registered bookmakers whose main customers are British residents or tourists and many bars have official gambling machines such as ‘Sportium.’ Police are baffled as to why the official ‘bookies’ were not used for the Aintree meeting, with many punters choosing an illegal gambling option. One of the raided venues allegedly received over 150 bets of between 50 cents and 50 euros, a total of 22,000€ in cash in four hours.
Rock Choir on a roll THE DENIA Rock Choir makes its live debut on Saturday 23rd April at 3pm at the Spring Fair being staged by HELP of Denia and the Marina Alta. The fair is a charity event and there will be a number of attractions, including other music groups, food and drink, between 11am and 4pm. The choir welcomes new members and meets at the Hostal Loreto, Denia, on Thursdays between 6pm and 7.430pm.

Drug traffickers arrested Recycling success RECYCLING RUBBISH a Marina Alta community is a saving the local authority over 100,000€ year as the bills for landfill fall.
AN UNDERCOVER operation in Malaga by Guardia Civil has resulted in eleven people being arrested, including six British citizens. During Operation Monteolivo, which started in January, officers observed the gang and found that they were hiring vans to transport the drugs to the UK. They managed to intercept one of the gang who was about to transport 80 kilos of marijuana. The drugs were already vacuum packed ready for sale. Detectives searched four homes in Mijas, Casares and Coin in the region and seized 147 kilos of marijuana acorns. They discovered three laboratories fully equipped for growing drugs, large amounts of cash, and equipment connected to the growing and distribution of the illegal substances.

Calpe is recognised as one of the best towns in Valencia for separating waste and placing items in the correct recycling bins. It has seen a 6% rise in recycling cans, plastics and ‘bricks’ -which all go in the same container, and 11% rise in recycled glass – representing between 5kg a 7kg per person. And Councillor Carole Saunders told RTN: “This is saving us 100,000€ a year because we are not having to send so much waste to the landfill site at El Campello. “We also get paid for the glass and paper collected in the corresponding rubbish bins, so we possibly get as much as 50,000€ back.” She said: “We are one of the best towns for recycling in Valencia, and second best in the league for recycling glass.”

Traffic stoppers by Rhiannan Bell PLANS ARE underway to close Alicante City centre on Sundays and to create three street markets that will attract visitors. Alicante´s mayor and the Councillor for Commerce, Gabriel Echavarri has urged the government to give financial support to a new ‘Commercial Invigoration Plan’, designed to boost the economy. City hall has already presented the proposals to the council of trade and says they include important measures to boost local commerce in the centre of Alicante and various neighborhoods. And a series of steps have been agreed with various trade associations in Alicante. The biggest change to the city would be “to close the city centre of Alicante to traffic on Sundays”, and other areas to introduce three markets “capable of generating a greater visitor influx.” To help revitalise the economy, it is also planned to hold a number of cultural events, children’s activities and sporting functions throughout the weekend in fifteen areas of the city. A fifth municipal market may also be launched in the Albufereta area. The port of Alicante is also to gain in the plans by increasing transport from the area to the city centre and by coordinating with the Port Authority´s efforts to convert the port into a welcoming base for cruise ships.
Arms dealer arrested in Spain
AN ARMS dealer alleged to have supplied weapons to an ISIS gunman who killed five people in Paris in January 2015 faces extradition to France after his arrest in Malaga.
Antoine Denivi was held under a European Arrest Warrant for arms trafficking and criminal association. He denies the charges and is being held in custody.
He is said to have supplied Amedy Coulibaly with guns for the attack on a Jewish supermarket in which people five people, four civilians and a police officer, died. The gunman was shot dead by security forces. Denevi fled to Malaga and used a fake ID to start his illicit activity again. A search of his home revealed fake papers, including another person’s valid European passport, and computer equipment currently being analysed.
Brothel keepers THE PROSECUTION is demanding sentences totalling 195 years for 11 members of a gang accused of criminally exploiting women in five ‘hostess’ clubs in Alicante, the Balearic Islands and Cuenca. Ten of the 11 defendants have admitted charges during a trial, but alleged ringleader Marcos MF denies all allegations. He maintains his business provided “room and board” for young people. Their case originally involved two other defendants but one of them has died and another on the run. The prosecution has asked the defendants, four of whom are women, be sentenced to prison terms ranging from 17 to 25 years for crimes relating to prostitution, human rights of foreign citizens, and illicit association. It is alleged during 2005 and 2006; the gang recruited victims in Paraguay and promised them that they could work in Spain as waitresses. In some cases, victims knew the reality of their job and because of their own economic circumstances agreed. They were taken to various hostess clubs and told they had to repay the debt that they had incurred for their travel to Europe; as security they had their passports taken from them.

Sun worshiper by CAROLINE TYSZKA
CHANNEL FOUR’S popular ‘A Place in the Sun’ returned to the Costa Blanca to film one person’s search for a dream move to Spain. The television programme, which helps Brits to find their ideal home abroad, visited Benidorm to film one lucky applicant’s search. In an RTN exclusive, 54-year-old Wendy Tyler explained why she wanted to make the move and how the production team helped her find her dream. Always a huge fan of the programme, Wendy, from Lincolnshire, has watched every episode. As her two sons had grown up and left home, on e to join the armed forces and the other to do a sports degree, Wendy had the opportunity to make some drastic changes to her life. The chance came last year when she was made redundant from a job that she had held for twenty years, her boss gave her a nudge in the right direction, telling her that this was now her time and to follow her dreams. Wendy then contacted the ‘A Place in the Sun’ team and filled in an application form not expecting to hear anymore. However, the team soon contacted her and asked that she go to London for an interview. Wendy took lifelong friend Diane with her, who was also thinking about making the move. The producers loved the two ladies and in the summer of 2015 visited Wendy and Diane in their home town to film the life she would be leaving behind. Whilst waiting to film, Wendy, a qualified hairdresser and beautician, contacted businesses in the area looking for work. She emailed Vikki Caton who owns the Hepburns Salon in the Benidorm indoor market. Vikki replied saying that it was impeccable timing because she was just opening up the Heburns Sparadise in the town and was looking for a beautician. Wendy said: “I jumped on a plane, met Vikki, and prayed that
I got the job as I fell in love with the Spa and the location. The rest just went from there.” Filming took place at the beginning of April and Wendy looked at various locations including Albir and the Poniente area of Benidorm. The new series of ‘A Place in the Sun has a new style and a new presenter, Danni Menzies. It is intended to show more of the lives of those relocating and their decision to make the move. The show featuring Wendy is scheduled to be screened in June. “It has been an amazing experience,” she said, “I am feeling optimistic for the future and settling down to my new life in Spain.”
Marathon runners die TWO RUNNERS died after tragedy struck a popular marathon being staged at a Castellon town on Sunday. One athlete collapsed during the race at La Vía Verde de Ojos Negros, a town between Castellon and Valencia, and a second runner soon after completing the run. Francisco Amat, aged 57, from Alicante, collapsed during the marathon. He was treated at the scene by doctors but pronounced dead on arrival at the Sagunto Hospital. The second runner, who has not been named, was aged 45 and from Barcelona, finished but was later found in the corridor of his hotel and the emergency services were unable to revive him.

Transplant fraud David gest dies
THE ENTERTAINER, producer and reality television personality David Gest has died aged 62. Gest, the former husband of singer Liza Minnelli was found dead at his hotel room in London on Tuesday. His good friend and bodyguard, Imad Handi, made the announcement to the media saying, “David was truly larger than life. He was not just a huge talent and a dear friend but a showbiz icon. I know he will be missed by millions of fans around the world, and particularly in Britain, who came to love his charm and blistering one-liners.” A Metropolitan Police statement said: “Police were called at 10:17 on Tuesday 12 April to the Four Seasons hotel, in Westferry Circus to reports of an unexplained death of a man in his 60’s. London Ambulance Service were called to the scene but he was pronounced dead at the scene.”
by CAROLINE TYSZKA A SOCIAL Security fraud has been discovered that allowed eastern Europeans to receive over 1.5 million Euros of specialist medical treatment in Spain. The Guardia Civil have uncovered the illegal medical tourism scam which gave people with fake papers access to kidney transplants and dialysis treatment. In Madrid officers found 14 patients who had obtained health cards and access to waiting lists which put them alongside or above Spanish residents also waiting for treatment. Operation ‘RENBUS’ discovered seven false companies supplying foreign workers with illegal documentation so that they could obtain the social security benefits; which included dialysis and transplant services. The operation was launched following a complaint from the Coordination of Transplants department of the Ministry of Health in Madrid, after observing an increase of eastern European patients presenting themselves for kidney transplants. And police discovered people needing treatment in Bulgaria were offered the false documentation to use
the Spanish system offering a better service. In Spain, they arrived at medical centres claiming they were visiting family but required the dialysis whilst in the country, available as a medical emergency treatment. Some obtained false documents showing they were working within the construction industry or as gardeners. It was discovered that the Bulgarian
press actively promoted an “excellent Spanish transplant system” which was abused by criminals running with the scam. The Guardia Civil is now investigating if other regions of Spain were also victims of the fraud. Crimes against Social Security are punishable by six months to six years imprisonment plus a fine and a compensation order.
ISIS arms discovered
GUARDIA CIVIL officers have seized weapons and an ISIS flag in Cueta, the Spanish city located on the north coast of Africa. The arsenal of four handguns, two submachine guns and ten knives were discovered along with the flag and a USB pen-drive. Acting Interior Minister, Jorge Fernández Díaz, said some of the weapons had fingerprints on them which police were able to recover; while the firearms had been sent to Madrid for analysis. Officers hope that the USB drive will contain vital information about links to the terrorist organisation and the source of the weapons.

Woman killed by partner Everything stops for tea by Caroline Tyszka AN ONGOING case of domestic violence ended in tragedy this week when a Benidorm woman was allegedly stabbed to death by her partner. Police were called to an incident on Tuesday following a call from the victim’s daughter at around 2.30 pm. Officers found the body of the 48-yearold Argentinean woman in bed with her Spanish partner lying alongside her. He was reportedly under the influence of an unknown drug and had a stab wound to his neck. He was first taken to the Marina Baixa Hospital in Villajoyosa for treatment prior to being arrested. The couple lived together at their home in the resort’s Calle de Los Flores for about 18 months. The man had been detained in July 2010 and December 2014 for offences of domestic violence.
MEMBERS OF U3A Marina Baixa enjoyed a traditional ‘afternoon tea’ on Saturday, helping raise funds for the association’s 10th anniversary celebration in October. More than 100 people relaxed in the beautiful garden of Joan and Bill Flint in Benidorm to make the tea party a great success. The U3A committee had been hard at work preparing sandwiches and salad and members baking a variety of cakes, scones and buns and at 2pm guests arrived with their tables and chairs,
many bringing tea pot, cups and saucers ready to tuck in. U3A Marina Baixa holds its general meetings on the fourth Monday of each month at the auditorium in the Casa de Cultura, Alfaz del Pi. The next Meeting is on Monday 25th April. Doors open at 10am
and the desks close at 10.50am for a prompt 11.00am start. New members are always welcome. For more information visit the website www. u3amarinabaixa.com, go to the Facebook page, or call Joan Flint on 96 586 1226 or 663 637 167.

Golfers help care drive by JACK TROUGHTON MEMBERS OF the Orba Warblers Golf Society donated a “delighted” Jalon Valley HELP with 3,439€; the result of 12 months of fund raising by 2015 President Bob Edwards. During his year in office, Bob and his fellow sportsmen and women decided to support the charity’s work at the Ferris Hospital in Fontilles. And the Warblers flocked to “magnificently” back a number of initiatives organised by Bob and his wife Rosemary. And Bob and Rosemary were given a tour of the Santolina Suite, the hospital, and the assisted living apartments at Fontilles before handing a cheque to HELP President Elaine Horton. An extremely grateful Elaine promised the money would be ring-fenced to help the needs of the sick and terminally ill cared for by the charity at the hospital. Pictured (from left) are Barbara Pollitt, golfer and HELP member; Andres Grau Colomer, Fontilles Development Director; Elaine Horton, Bob and Rosemary Edwards. HELP is always looking for people to join its team. Prospective fund raisers, drivers, translators, visitors, workers for the Jalon and Alcalali charity shops, or the Casa de Animo drop-in centre can call 659 624 643 for more information.
Shakespeare in flowers
ST GEORGE’S Day on Saturday 23rd April marks the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death and there is a double celebration at the Ermita San Josep Church in La Fustera. From 11am until 3pm, the Costa Blanca Anglican Chaplaincy is staging a traditional fete in the grounds and a flower festival inside the church. Shakespeare is the theme for the flower arrangements, which could represent a line form a
sonnet or the interpretation of one of the Bard’s great plays. Displays can be presented on the day, along with the 5€ entry fee which will be donated to charity – and there is a cash prize for the best interpretation. And amongst the fete’s many stalls are traditional foods from England, Wales and Scotland; and an American Diner offering hamburgers and the Chilli Dogs with all the trimmings that proved so popular last year. There will also be tombola, a raffle, crafts, competitions, and live music from Dave Peachy. Proceeds from the day will support the Anglican Chaplaincy, the children of EMAUS, Ripple Africa and World vision. For more information call Eileen Hodson on 607 706 904. The Ermita is just off the Moraira to Calpe coast road. At the junction with the CV745 at km5, turn off towards Benissa and the church is 500 metres on the left.

Women are from Truvy’s by JACK THOUGHTON TAKE SIX wonderfully drawn characters, add some inspired acting and Javea Players pulled off a triumph with a classy version of Steel Magnolias. Men really are left on Mars as the story centres on a hairdressing salon and beauty parlour in a small Louisiana town. The beating heart of the half dozen heroines, it is the venue where hopes, fears, and tragedy are all shared...along with some wonderful comedy. Many people will be familiar with the starstudded Hollywood film but the play takes an audience to Venus and bares the soul of these sassy women; and as the title suggests reveals the hard core of the characters alongside their fragility. The story opens in the salon as everyone prepares for Shelby’s wedding. A diabetic, she triggers an early drama by having a seizure – but all goes well. Warned by doctors
she should not have children because of the risks to her own health, her announcement she is expecting is a mixed blessing. She gives birth to a son but the toll on her body is high and she first needs dialysis and soon the gift of a kidney from her mum M’Lynn. However, the frailty of Shelby’s body means she does not recover – she falls into a coma and her family take the brave decision to switch off the machine. BOND Emotions run high as the six are reunited after the tragedy but the friendship of the women and their iron bonds sees them through, together with another round or two of laughs. The story is a bitter sweet rollercoaster powered by a skilfully penned script by Robert Harling, his play started as a short story after the death of his diabetic sister. One minute, the audience is chortling at a quick one-line joke, the next reaching for a tissue. And the cast put in an excellent day at the
office, aka the salon. The southern accents were never allowed to slip and the timing was spot on, allowing the audience to sink into life in Truvy’s world. Congratulations to Pat Doidge as salon owner Truvy; her apprentice Annelle, the impressive teenager Tasha Fish; the quick-witted Clairee, Jen Kellow-Ward; Shelby, Terri Brown; her big-hearted mum M’Lynn, Rosemary Brown; and Lindsay Johnson as prickly Ouiser. The photograph of Shelby (Terri Brown, right) test driving a new haircut at the salon was taken by Benny Davis.

Benidorm parking hopes AN ONGOING project has seen Benidorm market having to move from the Foietes parking area, which is scheduled to re-open at the end of June. The majority of the public parking area has been out of action for several months, whilst building work, in the Foietes area, has been taking place, leaving many residents and market stall holders, having to relocate their vehicles and stalls. The Foietes Park Benidorm project is running behind schedule, and should by now be over 50% complete. However, progress is currently only at 22.68%, meaning that, after the summer months, restrictions will be back in place. The town hall’s intention is that the area will be open for the summer, to help with events such as the Low Festival, which takes place in July, and the many sporting events that require the space.

St George’s Day celebrations RTN IS proud to be part of the sponsorship team helping to make the 3rd St. George’s Day celebrations, in Alfaz del Pi, the biggest yet. In 2014, a group of businessmen decided that British residents should get together and celebrate St George’s Day, as other nationalities did in the region. A fake wedding and birthday of local residents Rachel and Stephen, regular customers of a popular Indian restaurant in Alfaz, was chosen as an appropriate opportunity and venue for the first attempt to organise a St George’s Day celebration. It worked really well, attracting 170 guests, all dressed in red and white, with the following year 330 people attending. The 4,300€ (including individual donations from local businessmen of 100€ each) was donated to the local charity, Alfaz Food Bank. Encouraged by the success of the previous two years, the 2016 version has now been organised. It will take place on Saturday 23rd April, at the Almafra Campsite in Alfaz del Pi, starting at 12 noon, and going on until late in the evening. There will be food, drink and live music all day long, with the aim of raising money for the Alfaz Food Bank and also to help local resident Majbrit, who is suffering from a life-threatening disease and needs specialist surgery in America.
Sponsors of the event are RTN; The Curry Pot, Pride Construction, Corona Blinds and Toldos, Union Jack Bar Benidorm, Hepburns Bar Albir, Steve & Janette Malone, Steve & Janice, Kreative Bunting, Mark Carter Plumbing Services, Leonard Knowles Construction, International Beds, CP Signs, Ron on the Rocks and, finally, Vista Gym La Nucia. Further sponsorship is, of course, very welcome, and tickets can be obtained in advance for 5€ from The Curry Pot, the Town Hall, Almafra Camping in Alfaz, and Hepburns Bar and the Companions Social Club in Albir. On the door, tickets will be 7€.
Second dog beach EL Campello council has approved plans for a second dog beach for the town in a quiet area of the coast. The new facility will be in the cove of the Barranc d’Aigües although opposition leaders believe the area is difficult to access and a better location could have been chosen. When the council was looking for their first dog beach last year the same location was rejected as it lacked any services. However, it has now been deemed a good site as a second area for owners and pets. El Campello Mayor Benjamin Soler explained the new beach would help people looking for a quieter area, and would complement the busier beach. The cove is situated next to the protected natural area of the Lloma of Reixes, where the Barranc d’Aigües tower stands. It is a natural beach of boulders and gravel, and is protected by a cliff, hence the concerns over access.
Boyfriend hunted by CAROLINE TYZSKA A EUROPEAN arrest warrant has been issued for the apprehension of the former boyfriend of missing woman Lisa Brown. Spanish police officers desperately want to speak to Simon Corner regarding the disappearance of Lisa, aged 32, from her home in San Roque at the beginning of November 2015. Corner, a yacht dealer, flew into Malaga airport in January but he did not present himself to the authorities for questioning; even though his solicitor at the time said he was happy to cooperate with the police and that he had returned to clear his name. Lisa, originally from Scotland had been working in Gibraltar and was due to start a new job two days after her disappearance.
23
Lisa’s brother, Craig Douglas spoke to journalists from his home in Alexandria, Dunbartonshire and said that the family was told the warrant had been issued and remained optimistic it would help find out what had happened to his sister. Craig said: “We need to ensure the public is aware that we still need answers and Simon Corner may hold those answers. It has not been an easy time for our family but the police are still working hard on the case.” A Merseyside police spokesperson said: “We are working with the Guardia Civil, Police Scotland and the National Crime Agency to locate a man who has links to Merseyside.” A traveller in Thailand claims he saw Corner last week in Pattaya, a busy town on Thailand’s eastern coast known for wild nightlife. Lisa disappeared whilst her son Marc, aged eight, was staying with his father. Day’s later local Spanish police interviewed Corner before he travelled to Thailand.
Sir Tom Jones’s wife dies MELINDA ROSE Woodward, the wife of singer Sir Tom Jones has died following a short battle with cancer. The couple were married for 59 years and were childhood sweethearts. In an interview with the BBC last year he said he would watch her pass his window with friends as he lay in bed suffering with tuberculosis for two years. “I was in love with her when I had TB when I was 12,” he said. The couple had one son Mark, 59, who is also Sir Tom’s manager. Lady Woodward became a recluse and had battled with depression, rumoured to have been caused by the many allegations of her husband’s numerous affairs. When Sir Tom was asked about his infidelity he said that Linda (as she was known) remained the most important person in his life. “We love one another,” he said.

Ruddigore comes alive by CAROLINE TYSZKA THE Gilbert and Sullivan Society presented its spring 2016 production “Ruddigore” in Alfaz del Pi on Wednesday 13th April. Although it is one of the lesser known operettas musical director Aileen Lightfoot said, “It is still filled with good tunes and the usual convoluted Gilbertian story.” This was the first time that CAGSS, The Calpe Gilbert and Sullivan Society, had performed at the Casa de Cultura in Alfaz del Pi and what a performance the cast gave. The love story was portrayed with humour and the vocals, particularly the harmonies, were outstanding with all performers showing their dedication to rehearsing had been worth the effort. The concert style performance worked well and the occasional referral to modern day events showed that such shows can remain true to their original form but also be current.
A further performance is being held at the Salon Blau in Calpe on Thursday 21st April and a few tickets are still available. Aileen said: “We would like to thank everyone for coming to the Alfaz del Pi show and hope that as many as possible can join us for either of our Calpe show during he week.” Tickets are priced at 10 euros, with block bookings getting one free ticket for every ten purchased. The group is again supporting the Friends of the Children of Emaus and hopes that the money raised this year will continue to help provide for youngsters who are looked after in the homes. To book tickets call 96 648 0300, 696 514 613, or email aileen2light@gmail.com. Alternatively tickets can be purchased from Margaret and Elena’s Card and Bookshop in the Gabriel Miro, Calpe.

Rebeca’s training will be at the Muziektheater in Amsterdam, home of the National Ballet of the Netherlands.
Stolen goods for drugs by Ian Askew THE GUARDIA Civil in Murcia, in a joint operation with local police seized half a kilo of hashish, several grams of cocaine, heroin and marijuana, and made two arrests. The operation began last autumn, and initial inquiries allowed officers to locate the property being used and identify the people suspected of being behind the criminal activity and surveillance began. It was established that the house under investigation received countless visits from people apparently seeking to buy different types of drugs. It also became apparent that buyers came to the house carrying all kinds of objects, leading the officers to suspect that stolen goods were being bartered for the drugs. Officers then raided the house, where they seized 560 grams of hashish pollen, 15 grams of marijuana, 5 grams of cocaine of high purity and 7 grams of heroin, as well as numerous articles relating to drug dealing. The stolen items appeared to have come from crimes committed in Totana and Mazarrón.
Record figures for airport
THE ALICANTE-Elche airport experienced a 25 percent increase in passengers for March 2016 compared to the same month in 2015. A total of 837,094 passengers travelled through the airport with AENA (Spanish Airports and Air Navigation) also reporting that there had been an increase of over 24 percent in flights for the same period. Top of the list for nationalities that used the airport was the UK with almost 334,000 British passengers, Germany were second with a mere 62,329 followed by Norway with 56,780.

Marijuana plantation raided GUARDIA CIVIL in Alicante made several arrests following the discovery of a marijuana plantation – part of a huge drug network. Officers believe they have shut down one of the largest distributors of marijuana in the province after finding 421 plants in various stages of the cultivation process. Twelve men and two women were arrested following raids in Onil, Elche, Villena and Ibi. Detectives also seized equipment used to help grow marijuana, 17g of cocaine, 6.5g of “crystal”, 116g of marijuana packaged ready for sale, over 900€ in cash, several mobiles and other items related to the sale of drugs. Officers said that the group were well organised with a departmental structure with some of the gang in charge of cultivation, others being responsible for transportation, and those who dealt with the street sales. And the operation is still ongoing with further arrests possible.

News from afar High proposal
A ‘ROMANTIC’ cliff top proposal went all wrong for a California man when he needed to be rescued and was arrested for being under the influence of drugs. Michael Banks scaled the 600-feet high landmark Morro Rock just off the coast at Morro Bay, Central California, and won a FaceTime ‘I do’ from his girlfriend when he asked for her hand in marriage. However, he found it harder to get down the rock face; the 27-year-old became stranded on a ledge. A helicopter was scrambled and he was winched to safety. Banks, who will have to foot the bill for his rescue, was seen to be behaving erratically and was arrested for being under the influence of drugs and possession of methamphetamine – bail was later set at $10,000. Morro Bay fire captain Todd Gailey said the girlfriend accepted Banks’ proposal but he needed help getting down. “He took a different trail don, which was much steeper and he became stranded. “He couldn’t go in any direction; he was on a sheer ledge, with his feet dangling 80 feet off the ground.” And he said he was winched down to hoist Banks to safety, the trapped man remaining calm throughout until the rotor blades of the aircraft came closer and he was covered in spray from the sea. Climbing is banned on Morro Rock but the many people ignore warnings and there have been fatal falls in the past.

Beach bedlam baby
THERE WAS a grave danger of lurching into a Sid James/Barbara Windsor ‘Carry On’ caper when the Current & Final Mrs Ashley trilled “Have you seen my flip flops?” I guffawed leeringly, à la Sidney, before realising we were talking footwear. Yes! soon be time for the Costa beach brouhaha. Where we spend hours in a sweaty cheek by jowl ménage with people, normally, you’d avoid like a Saga holiday in Syria. It’s interesting watching the tribal aspects of beach etiquette ( oxymoron?) and how we mark out our territory. The Latino community get together like a rugby scrum, talk & eat loudly, and enjoy themselves. Northern European pale faces tend to operate a benign apartheid system – give me space and don’t engage me in any conversation or make eye contact (otherwise known as the Madonna/Mariah Carey complex). Now! what to wear? Last year it was – from toe to top – pink crocs, tartan socks, budgie smugglers, string vest & a bandana, but the headgear made me look ridiculous, so I switched to the traditional knotted hankie. However this year – Hubba-Hubba – it’s the leopard skin Mankini (feast your eyes ladies). It’s interesting speculating on the nationality of fellow beachsters. The Germans tend to carry the most timber, size-wise. Last Summer a couple waddled along the beach towards us & we could only think they had left the 3rd bear with the babysitter. Beware of jumping to stereotyping conclusions however, because as they passed I noticed matching tattoos boasting ‘Hartlepool United Forever’. Don’t be too obvious when people watching. When I wore a younger man’s budgie smugglers a glance at a young woman was never a problem – the girl in question may well have thought I looked like the South end of a North bound bus, but she would rarely take offence. Now at the prescribed 3 score and 10 it could become an Operation Yewtree incident or a domestic dust-up. Last year espying a young wench wearing an item that great philosopher, Timmy Mallett waxed lyrical about in 1990, Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Polka Dot Bikini, (I feel embarrassed actually typing that). You’d find more cotton in the top of an aspirin bottle. Foolishly I was under the impression the Current & Final was fast a kip - therefore as I casually glanced, without opening her eyes, she snorted “I hope that was worth the trouble you are now in.” Heigh-ho, slip-slap-slop, but not in front of the neighbours, it startles them.

Murcia Appeal Court confirmed ruling against Popular Bank THE GOOD news continues for those affected by the purchase of properties at the Almanzora Country Club. The Provincial Appeal Court of Murcia, in a judgement issued on 10th of March 2016, and recently notified to our office, has confirmed the judgment we won before the court of First Instance number 4 of Totana, in the Ordinary Proceedings number 494/13. The Provincial Court confirmed Bank Popular as the entity that had: -opened the account in which buyers deposited their payments, -they also granted several general bank guarantee lines in the same complex, and so should return buyer’s money paid to the developer Huma Mediterraneo, plus legal interest from the time when the payment took place, even though the consumers did not have an individual guarantee, all under the Law 57/68. Whilst it is true Law 57/68 has been repealed with effect from the date of 1st January 2016, by the Law 20/2015, regarding management, supervision and solvency of insurance and reinsurance companies, the new law change can not affect those affected by Almanzora Country Club, since the events occurred prior to the entry into force of the new law, and certain consumer’s rights cannot be waived, as per the general principle of non-retroactivity, noted in Article 2.3 of the Civil Code which states that “the laws have no retroactive effect unless stated otherwise”. We therefor understand that those affected can claim under the Law 57/68. In the court case to which we refer above, most of those affected have already had their money returned,
since we had asked for the provisional execution of the judgment obtained against the Popular Bank, thereby recovering about € 300,000. So, if you bought a property off plan in the complex Almanzora Country Club (ACC) or any other promotion, and they have not handed over the property, nor returned the money paid, you should know that you can claim for the money back from the bank or insurance company that signed the collective bank
guarantee or insurance policy (even if you do not have an individual guarantee). If there are no such guarantees or group policy, you could still claim back against the bank who opened the special account for the promoter into which the amounts paid by the buyers were deposited. Do not hesitate, now is the perfect time to claim, if you have lost money buying a property off plan in Spain, our firm will help you, so contact us.

Panama papers and the Banks At the moment Politicians across the world and especially it seems in the UK are in the spotlight regarding their tax affairs, but Banks will also soon be in the spotlight, as by Friday 15th April they have been told to hand over any information regarding their dealings with the law firm at the centre of the Panama Papers to the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority.
So pressure is growing on the City watchdog to launch a full-blown investigation into these explosive claims. It has already become clear that nearly all of the major Banks are involved to some degree, with a few well known Banks such as HSBC, Deutsche Bank, UBS, Coutts and Rothschild’s standing out more than others. According to the Panama papers, Banks set up 15,600 offshore companies. HSBC alone set up more than 2,300. HSBC is the Bank that nearly lost its US licence a few years ago when it was discovered that one of its clients was one of the most murderous and wealthiest drugs barons in Mexico. It would appear that they didn’t learn from their past mistakes and that the lure of wealth and making huge profits for the Banks made them forget their moral, ethical and legal obligations. But the Panama Papers could be just the tip of the iceberg, let’s not pretend for a minute that there was anything unusual about Mossack Fonseca, because there was not. This is just one of a host of law firms in tax havens doing remarkably similar things. The need is for the FCA to demand that banks put on record all their connections with secrecy jurisdiction lawyers, accountants etc. This could all lead to hefty fines for the Banks on top of the fines they have already had for fixing the FX markets, Gold prices, Libor etc etc the list just goes on and on. Plus hopefully it will help ensure Investment Banks are a lot more transparent on what they are doing and with whom in the future. With this in mind be cautious as to where you place your money as some Banks may struggle to survive. If you want to know what your options are, I am here to help you find the right solution to make your money work for YOU, in the most tax efficient way possible. Real rain at last – the gardens and nature welcome it by
Dick Handscombe Holistic gardener and author
THREE DAYS with rain! Could hardly believe it after the third long winter and early spring drought on a trot. Just a couple of light showers the first and third days but the middle day’s rain added up to some 6.3 centimetres in an empty builders bucket. Nowhere near the 63 centimetre 24 hour record of our area on 21st November 1996 but very welcome as all plants had a wash, it was not dirty rain, the first twenty centimetres of soil had a good soaking and perhaps our local springs run for a few days to allow some unchlorinated drinking and seedling watering water to be collected. Within hours one could notice more flowers opening on the Judas tree that was too late for the early Easter and the hawthorn tree just down the road so that leaves and flowers could be collected and dried to add to the row of bottles of leaves for healthy infusions - a local legend being that hawthorn infusions are good for improving or maintaining good blood pressures. When gardening for the next week now need to check the young olives and walnuts daily to pick them for immediate eating as a spring tapas and pickling for summer and autumn tapas and wine evenings. If still soft in ten days time might add to the veggie mix for a large, for 12, vegetarian paella that I need to serve before milk lamb and goat roasts.
‘Vegetable mix Ready to fry before adding water and rice as per recipe in the Amazon book ‘Authentic Valencian Paellas ‘ The growth and flowering of daffodils and other spring bulbs accelerated and might even have early sum summer lilies flowering at the same time as Dutch and Spanish irises. There is so much growth of salad leaves and nasturtium flowers that need to eat healthy zero kilometre sal salads daily for the next fortnight. And it is not only overwintered garden vegetables that are now at their best but also the vegetables in the huertos maintained by a few thoughtful restaurants such as the new Michelin starred Restaurant Monastrell on the Alicante harbour front where I really enjoyed their creative and tasty ‘Vegetable Garden’ starter on their launch day earlier this week. It was wonderful to eat veggies as tasty as from one’s own garden in a restaurant in Spain for a change. It reminded me of the many good restaurants in French and English villages located adjacent to vegetable and herb gardens supervised by the chefs and the quality of vegetables served in the family run bar-restaurants in our Spanish village before the original owners retired, the young generation moved to the construction industry or unemployment and the centu centuries old agricultural activities of grandfathers and fathers were abandoned over a period of just ten years. OK have now met RTN’S dead line so can go and collect, assemble and eat a hearty salad and broccoli and nasturtium omelette to set me up for a full days gardening. That is if the current and unexpected drizzle stops soon, and of course there is no current long range weather forecast suggesting that the coming sum summer will be wet. So the book ‘How to use less water in your garden’ may be useful to new comers to Spain and other worried gardeners.

I can´t get rid of the virus
Hi, I have one new HP laptop which is the one that got the Ransomware 4096 infection and I have brought it back to factory settings and used anti malware bytes but it is still lurking in the folders. Many thanks, Richard Reply: It seems very strange if you have set your PC back to factory settings, and you still have this ransomware. Resetting to factory settings usually involves a nice clean install of Windows. Dissappearing Firefox Hi, Now just where do I start? Yesterday a friend wanted to show me how to do something on my computer. My Firefox disappeared and so I lost my Speed dial and TRE app. I am not sure I understand downloading - so please can you tell me how to download.Thank you for your help. Meri Aunty says: Disappearing Firefox. It may be that you have simply lost the icon from your desktop. You should be able to locate it in the All programs from the Start menu. Or click the start icon and type in “firefox” in the search bar. If Firefox is not here, then maybe you (or your friend) have accidentally uninstalled it, in which case you will have to use another internet browser (Chrome, or IE) to go to the firefox website (it’s called Mozilla) and download and run the firefox set up.You download by clicking on the download links on the website.

We miss his girlfriend OUR SON lived with his long term girlfriend for many years. To our shock and disappointment, he has left her for another woman. We have grown very fond of this girl - she was our daughter-in-law to all intents and purposes. He says we should no longer see her. We are extremely sad and unhappy about the situation, and we don’t think our son has the right to say who we should see, and who we should not. When relationships break down, families are often left in turmoil. On one hand you would like to respect your son’s wishes, but on the other, you have grown to care for this girl. It’s a tough one, and there are no easy answers, expect that you can only try and explain matters to your son, and hope he accepts the situation. You could always arrange to meet up away from the house, and see how it goes. You might find though, in time that if she meets someone else, she may want to distance herself.
WITH A background in family and matrimonial mediation, Life Coach Sara Bell helps Readers with their daily worries. If you are having diffi culties with relationships, family, work or any other aspect of your life, then help is at hand. Should I give her another chance? I WAS glad to leave school last year, as I hated every minute of it. I was particularly happy to leave behind all my ‘so-called’ friends, but one of these girls contacted me and asked to hook up. My Mum said I should go out with her because I have been staying in a lot, and it would be good for me. It turns out she has ditched these other friends, so latched on to me. However, I never really liked her and she was a bit nasty to me. As you go through life you will find you meet many lovely people, young and old, who you will consider your friend. If this girl continues to be nasty to you, then you have the right to ditch her if you want to, but give it a try first because people can change, and she might have been behaving that way because of peer pressure. We all do a lot of growing up once we have left school, and she may want to make amends.

You have been hasty to judge somebody and it is just that someone who surprisingly comes to your side to aid you this week, just when you need them. This action cements a friendship which will endure the sands of time as it proves to be one of your strongest. Mercury trines on Pluto, and portents serendipity and fortunate blessings all around you. The sun enters your house of hospitality and a Taurean in love is a sight to behold, as they are led by the activation of their heart and soul energies and are guided by Venus the Goddess of Love. Currently there is in addition a strong connection with a new scheme or project to boot which bodes well for the future. Time to celebrate in style. The Mercury Quincunx with Saturn will certainly serve to put the cat amongst the pigeons. With Mercury all necessary channels of communication are open, but Saturn has the spin on bringing about both emotional change and stark reality; and when push turns to shove, anything is possible. There is a volcano out there...now ready to erupt! All seeing Pluto intervenes with Venus just as Venus trines with wily Saturn. There may very well be more to something than meets the eye, but you should butt out and not get involved. Others are planning something, and though you don’t have to get involved, agree to be there when and if you are needed, it will probably be to pick up the pieces. The Sun enters into Taurus midweek and this heralds some calm and sensible approach to a matter that seems to be about to veer totally out of control. Be sure that what you are about to suggest is fully feasible and that you are not taking on something you may very well regret. Sadly the cause of the problem is not going anywhere any time soon. Mercury takes on both Saturn and Pluto this week, and it would seem that your current evasive actions are under close and intensive scrutiny. The current conflict of interests does nobody any favours any way, and may very well bite you on the bottom if you are seen to be interfering. Let sleeping dogs lie, you have, at least done more than anybody else! The Venus quincunx with lucky Jupiter really serves to get the ball rolling as it begins to bring some positive and inspiring energies back to the table. About time too. Somebody really needs your tender loving care right now, but they have hurt you, and your pride now goes against the grain. Sort this, you will look back at it with regret in time.
As tears go by
Passing over to the Spirit World is a very final journey as this life on Earth has ended and it is time to move on.
So many tears fill the eyes of those whom we have loved and have had to say goodbye to, whether they be relatives, friends or neighbours. It is a comfort to cry when you need to, and shock and bad news and sheer unjustness bring tears to our eyes, as our emotional centres are triggered and the soothing of tears are all that we have at the time. Even when Routines are broken this week, and for very good reason too we think we are all cried out, it takes just one more itty bitty tear to release our emotions and we are off, hunting for the because there are surprises afoot! As the hard worker that tissues once more. Crying is never a weakness but it is a process that soothes the soul and it does bring relief when our you are it is time to have a break and just enjoy time spent stressed emotional levels are compromised, and the tears flow by. Strength comes from the ability to release tension, and with someone you love very dearly, and see what happens. this is emotionally best served and regulated by the passing of a tear or two, when needed. Our loved ones in the Spirit Being busy suits you, but now is a time for some much World have been well prepared for the many ways and means of clear communication with the people they have had to needed rest and relaxation, it may lead to something. Venus trysts with Jupiter which connects you directly to your leave behind as they are dwellers still on Earth. One of the principle rules is to only make contact if it is OK to do so, and for innermost self. You may actually like what you see within; but that reason close communication often takes place whilst we are sleeping. To suddenly appear in daylight, when directed you have a lesson to learn that it isn’t wrong to love yourself, by a Medium, can soften the blow, but face to face in contact and visible on the Earth plane is a somewhat tall order. Tears it’s inspiring, and you need to experience it before you pre are a veil of emotion from Spirit World to Earth and they would be flowing in both directions, for sure. Spirit World dwellers judge yourself in a current affair of the heart. Be yourself, are mindful of the routine, whilst only a small minority of those who have passed over manage to actually get their chance somethings should never change. to contact. If their loved ones fear Spirit or are held back by religious doctrine, actual contact is rendered highly unlikely. Time and time again you have been the pivot in a relationMany of my clients, including myself, have shed a tear because the energy felt between the two planes is comforting, re asship which has gone stale. It is clear that you are committed suring and yet the addition of tears can stop the accuracy of a message being passed. Spirit holds back because they have to help those who need you, but you should not be open to been warned they should not distress and clients are advised that their loved ones do not want to see them cry. Personally abuse by anyone. Someone may very well have gotten hold there is definitely nothing wrong with a few tears now and again, and those in Spirit should be very unafraid to show that of the wrong end of the stick, but just how much of an acthey care with a tearful interjection or two, it would be totally acceptable. Just not the enforced misery of grief and mourncident it is, is there for figuring out. I wonder why? ing.. Who wants that? Many people think that their tears are a way of showing respect to the dead. I get so much mail that The Venus square on Pluto sends shockwaves, just because proudly tells me that each anniversary of a passing brings floods of tears in respect of those who have passed over. I do at long last you seem to be back in business. Now that your not hold with that. Respect is always sent with love, and to cause distress to our loved ones by letting them see how unimmediate priorities are taken care of, it is time to wake up and smell the coffee. Nobody who treats you badly has ever happy we are, does nobody any favours. You see, Earth to Spirit and Spirit to Earth, it’s very much a two way street. We can really loved you, and so it is time to move your emotional see them and they can see us. I want to look down one day and see those that I have left behind getting on with life, and centres; so there can be no further damage. actively thoroughly enjoying seeing them happy and contented. I certainly wouldn’t want to see them cry for any reason Neptune cannot come to your rescue now that you need a whatsoever, least of all for me, thank you very much! hand up in a situation which is draining your energies. Just sometimes the answer you have to give is a resounding,” No! “ You are taking on too much and you appear to be running yourself ragged. Do not fear that you need help, and be very unafraid even if you have to ask for it.

KENNY, MY Mother died in May last year and soon it will be the anniversary of her death. The whole family are preparing for the day already, but I do not know how I will get through this, or what I want to do, nothing seems right! Kiera J. Kiera, a daughter buries her mother one day, that is the normal action life brings, though it is the reverse of this procedure that is seen to be a tragedy. I am sorry for your loss and I appreciate in a loving family that your mother is very sadly missed. I doubt very much however that she would want there to be grieving and sadness, you have all of you done enough of that at times over the past months. Why not have a family meal together and toast your mother with good cheer and smiles? Each person around the table could tell her something special that the past year has brought each and every one of you. If mother was with you here on Earth in person, it is just what you would do! Show her how you can celebrate and what a loving, caring family you all are!

The last goodbye Moraira Teulada U3A by JACK TROUGHTON
MEMBERS OF the Anglican Chaplaincy – the Church of England in Spain – held a party to say goodbye to one of its most popular vicars; Father Steve Foster and his wife Ruth. They stayed 12 months longer on the Costa Blanca than originally planned and brought a proud Yorkshire spirit to the area before retirement finally called from their beloved Robin Hood’s Bay. The farewell party was held at the San Josep church in La Fustera and a huge turnout turned out to honour the couple’s work in Spain – Reader Stephen Carden and Senior Chaplain Marcus Ronchetti highly eloquent in thanking Steve and Ruth. The couple was also presented with a range of gifts – including a t-shirt for Steve proclaiming: “English by birth – Yorkshire by the Grace of God!” Father Steve, also known as the Singing Vicar, sang a special and funny song of farewell, providing his own backing music playing the bouzouki, a form of mandolin which he made himself. And to the delight of everyone present, he staged a mini concert using the instrument and his trusty banjo. The party heard the couple made a real difference to people living across the region, not only as a vicar but also a musician and sometime IT expert. For more information about the work and event organised by the Chaplaincy, go to www.costablanca-anglicanchaplaincy.org.

Hairless for charity By CAROLINE TYSZKA
A CHARITY shave and wax event took place last week in Alfaz del Pi to raise funds for local resident Majbrit Jessen. Organiser Emma Taylor rallied the troops and local lad Carl Campbell, a customer at The Crown Alfaz, volunteered to have his beloved beard shaved off for sponsorship on Friday night. Hepburns Deano McGinley was more than happy to perform the task as the total reached 300 euros. Majbrit, who needs lifesaving surgery in America, attended the event offering her support and thanks to all those who were making personal sacrifices to help her ‘gofundme’ total. One Spanish customer, Emilio Romero Perez, was challenged on the night by his friends to have his beard shaved off and an impromptu whip round raised a further 30 euros. Chelsea Geraghty, also from Hepburns, came along with her hot waxing equipment as barman Gary Carter prepared himself for a public armpit waxing. As customers donated 120 euros to see Gary endure a very painful experience the moment came for Chelsea and Deano to perform their sponsorship duties. Amanda, landlady of The Crown Alfaz, said: “A big thank you to everyone who came and well done for raising 450 euros.” After the event Gary said: “I can honestly say it feels like my armpits are on fire, but I would have everything waxed if it helped raise money for Majbrit’s charity.”

Wheelchair rolls in
by CAROLINE TYSZKA
CANCER CHARITY MABS staged its eighth annual Fun Run in Moraira on Sunday and celebrated its first athlete in a wheelchair. Among the 150 people taking part was Lydia La Riviere, who competed in an adapted wheelchair and hopes her example will attract others next year. The event was another success for the MABS Cancer Support Group with more than 2,000€ being raised so far, with sponsorship still being collected Lydia, who lives in Moraira, told RTN: “I hope there are more next year; obviously you need a little bit of fitness; there are one or two hills but they are manageable. “I do train a lot – when people keep on training and working out, they stay fit for a long time.” Teulada-Moraira Councillor Nacim Benatsou stood in for the mayor to start the race and the first man home was Connor Wrettom, completing the 5km in 23 minutes. Lisa Childs won the women’s race, and 11-yearold Noah Trivett was first in the children’s class for the second successive year. MABS President Jacqui Phillips MBE said she was happy with the amount raised for charity coffers. “There were not as many entries as last year but I am more than happy with the result. “The cake stall did very well; all the cakes were homemade by our volunteers and proved to be very popular.”

Adele tolling a very BIG bell! ADELE HAS mesmerised the world with her unique style of music that began in 2008 when she released her first album ´19, ´ and she continues to deliver and entertain us with her gentle but profound take on the business of boy meets/loses/meets girl. Through the beauty of her words it’s likely you feel you know her pretty well, but last week, out of nowhere, we were treated to a much more ´in your face´ side of the singer from Tottenham. It kicked off when she found out Australian comedienne Rebel Wilson was up for the role of playing her in a biopic remarking “they need my f***ing permission! Sorry Rebel ain’t gonna happen!” Yep! that’s a couple of villages away from ´putting it mildly.´ Now cooking with gas Adele added “let’s see if the rumours Rebel Wilson will be playing me in a movie turn out to be true … just because I’m plus-sized doesn’t mean she’s playing me,” more fuel to an already well stoked fire there. The Daily Star then pitched in with a quote from a nameless friend of Rebel´s who apparently said “Rebel has always wanted to prove she can cut it as a serious actress,” before having the bare faced cheek to add “although Rebel isn’t exactly on par with Adele’s singing ability, she can still at least hold a tune, and computer wizards can do the rest,” thank you The Daily Star and your nameless person. The question I must now pose is “is it really possible for film companies to cast a person in a role where the said person is still alive and kicking and doesn´t want that said person to …” I´m sure you´ve got my drift! One thing is for sure, your gonna need to watch this space!
JOHN CLEESE is threatening legal action against a production company over what he claims is a “rip-off” of Fawlty Towers. In 1997 Brisbane´s Imagination Workshop put together ´Faulty Towers Dining Experience´ and it’s become a huge financial success. Cleese posted on Twitter ´the production´s been using the show’s concept without the need to pay (co-writer) Connie Booth and me a single cent, I never realised that ‘tribute’ is a synonym for ‘rip-off’.” After one Twitter user branded the situation “f****** shocking”, Cleese replied: “That’s the phrasing I’m hoping to use in court.” It’s not wise to mess with JC!
SPECULATION ABOUT who will be the next Bond is a daily event on the celebrity websites, and now Westminster born Tom Hiddleston is very much in the race as Daniel Craig´s replacement. However, allegedly Tom responded to the news with ´I’d Rather Slash My Wrists! which is bit uncalled for, but he did say “ it’s becoming overwhelming, not the thing of it, but the number of people per day who bring it up, it’s actually becoming a weird thing to deal with,” With you this time Tommy boy! Hiddleston is the bookies’ favourite ahead of Tom Hardy, Damian Lewis and Idris Elba. Who´s yours?
´GUNS N´ROSES, ´singer Axl Rose and guitar player Slash fell out so heavily in 1993 the band had no choice but to split up. However, over the last 3 years their management have desperately been trying to find a truce and finally got them to play at the tiny Troubadour in Los Angeles, testing to see if there was a punch perhaps. Axl and Slash hugged after the show and a Facebook entry has since read “Following months of intense speculation from rock music fans around the world, Guns N’ Roses confirmed today they will embark on a massive North American summer stadium tour! The lord be praised!
FOR 27 years The Simpsons have been breaking new ground in the business of cartoon making, with the yellow three fingered dysfunctional family at the hub of things. The latest ´out there’ storyline is attributed to Johnny LaZebnik 21 year old son of Rob LaZebnik co-executive producer of the show. The storyline centres on Waylon Smithers Jr who comes out as gay after 27 years in the closet. Bringing you fully up to speed, 21 year old Johnny is gay, and father Rob said ‘What better way to tell my son I love him than to write a cartoon about it?” That´s got to be the ultimate Aahh Bless!
ALECIA BETH Moore, better known as ´Pink, ´ blew the pop business away when she exploded on the scene in 2000 with her spectacular image and wild child style. Her personal life followed suite with an on/off love life that only served to fuel her fire. That’s all in the past, as what we have now is a resurgence of the girl from Pennsylvania who´s written the theme song to Disney´s ´Alice Through The Looking Glass´ and it’s to be her first single release in three years, which is sure to bring great rejoicing amongst the crop top and hair gel community! How spiky do you like it?
LOTS OF Comedy Clubs popped up in London in the early 80´s giving aspiring young comedians a chance to do one the hardest things … make people laugh! Many succeeded including Ade Edmondson who went on to be Vyvyan in ´The Young Ones´ and did some innovative stuff with his late pal Rik Mayall in ´Bottom.´ It’s mainly been quiet-ish since those halcyon days, but now the word is that Ade could become the subject of the most unlikely of castings in Star Wars history. Apparently he was seen by director JJ Abrahams whilst performing in War and Peace earlier this year. Heavens!

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
More People Words We opened up the whole new subject of “people words” last week and I have to say that ever since then I have come across more and more of them in everyday situations. We started with people words ending in “dor” and “dora”, and to extend the subject I thought we could look at ones that end in the suffix “-ante” or “-ente”. Again these are usually formed from verbs. For example, the verb “cooperar” unsurprisingly means to “cooperate”. The person word that comes from it “cooperante” has a very specific meaning, which is “aid worker”. There have been some rather nasty instances in the news recently of “cooperantes” being kidnapped or suffering accidents. A very famous Spanish “cooperante” in India, Vicente Ferrer , died last year and there has been much publicity about his life and work. Similar in a way is the word “ayudante” which means “helper” from the verb “ayudar”. Sometimes you might see an advertisement for an “ayudante de cocina” – a kitchen assistant. Formed in the same way, but with a different ending is the word “oyente”. We are “oyentes” when we listen to the radio, as we are people who listen or “hear” from the verb “oír”. Also with the “ente” ending is “creyente” “a believer”, from the verb “to believe” - “creer”. These endings do not differentiate between masculine and feminine, but we would change the article (el, la, un, una) to mark the difference. Another typical person ending is “ero” or the feminine form “era”. Someone who travels (viajar) is a “viajero” or “viajera”. Here’s one that has been taken from English and preserves the typical English spelling “rockero” “rockera” a rock singer or rock star. Somehow these days the word goes with “viejo” “old rocker” which is rather sad, I think! “Viejo rockero” is also the title of a rather ironic song about this much loved and familiar character.
This takes me rather neatly on to a related topic, which is how we can turn adjectives into nouns that describe people. “Viejo” for example is an adjective as we have just seen in “viejo rockero”. We can also say “viejo amigo” which is different incidentally from “amigo viejo”. “Viejo amigo” is someone who has been your friend for a long time, whilst “amigo viejo” is a friend who is old. Anyway, back to the point, we can also use the word “viejo” on its own as a noun. “El viejo” therefore means the “old man” and “la vieja” the old woman. “La vieja” is not the most flattering thing to call someone – much more polite is “la señora mayor”. The same system works for “joven” (young). “El joven” is “the young man” and “la joven” “the young woman.” Another example which comes to mind for some reason is the comedy pair Laurel and Hardy (yes, I really am that old as well). In Spanish they are called “El Gordo y El Flaco” (the fat one and the skinny one) which rather speaks for itself. And finally, also connected to the world of cinema, that wonderful film entitled “El bueno, el malo y el feo”, which when you translate it back to English shows that we occasionally do the same thing our language as well. Google has just told me that that film was released in the US in 1967. ¡Cómo vuela el tiempo!

How to comply with the Building Bible in Spain The LOE (La Ley de Ordenación de la Edificación) The building Bible in Spain is the Code of Practise, similar to the UK Building Regulations which came to light on, March 29th of 2007 (commonly known now as the “CTE”).
This Code of Practise endeavour to control the quality of building elements such as: Structural safety. Safety in case of fire. Security within the buildings. Hygiene, health and environmental protection. Energy saving and thermal insulation. Protection against noise. A new element has been added since then to the CTE, and deals with Accessibility to public spaces and ease of access for handicap people. These norms replace various previous norms. Before we embark ourselves on technical details I will attempt to explain the intended aim of the legislator with the CTE as he has stated on the preamble of this law. All building elements must be design to minimum standards. Against the previous building regulations which had a prescriptive character i.e. architects would specify any material that he would consider would do the job, now he has to specify a material that must achieve a minimum standard specified by the CTE. This simple fact would allow us to compare similar buildings with regards to energy efficiency, general safety, sound and thermal insulation etc, therefore coercing the building industry to be more competitive. Energy certificates for your home, a must. Any buildings or homes built from 1997 onwards, has to have an energy certificate, similar to those you see when you buy a fridge. You must have seen it. A certificate that has arrows of different colours marked with letters and different colours, ranging from green for the letter “A” to brown to the letter “G”, being “A” the most efficient. Therefore, before you buy a new home in Spain you should ask for this certificate to enable you to compare your home with other dwellings. On the long term a letter A or B could save you lot of
Euros in opposition to a home with a let say, letter D or E. After the CTE, buildings in Spain are suppose to be safer with regards to the prevention of falls due to slippery floors, levels of lighting in public o common areas in block of apartments, public building etc. A minimum of lighting has to be designed for those areas. More care has to be taken when designing parking areas where a clear division between vehicles and pedestrians has to be established. However lets concentrate on the more interesting sections. Ventilation, 24 hours a day whether you like it or not. To achieve a higher standard of ventilation and to comply with CTE, continuous ventilation has to be provided in our homes. Extractions of air have to be carried out from vertical ducts in bathrooms and kitchens. Continuous inlet of fresh air has to be allowed to get into bedrooms and living rooms so as to achieve a flow of air from these spaces through halls, corridor etc to kitchen and bathrooms, twenty four hours a day. The standard vertical duct popularly known in Spain as “Shunt” which works as a standard chimney is no longer allowed. From now on, there should be an electrical extractor continuously active or instead a hybrid system which works as follow, air is sucked from a chimney top as before. When air blows and a specific amount of cubic metres of air is removed outside, all is well, but if the air suction power falls below the level specified, then the electrical extractor must switch itself on automatically. One of the contradicting aspect of the CTE to my mind, is this obsession with air ventilation and then being so strict with energy saving. I personally pointed this out to a professor who worked actively on the creation of part of the CTE. He explained that cancer have increased dramatically through the developed countries in the past ten years; specialists think that to a large extend, this is due to the increased quantities of carcinogenic products such as detergents, plastics and other harmful products used at home, ventilation is thought to be one of the most effective way of contra reacting their harmful effects. Better thermal insulation. To calculate the thermal insulation required in any building we must specified what we think is required. Then this proposed
insulation, is introduced in a computer programme provided freely by the Ministry of Housing. This software only compares the building that we design, with a hypothetical building similar to our one but with the correct type of insulation. If our building does not have sufficient thermal insulation the programme does not issue an energy certificate which is required by the CTE and of course by the Local Authorities. Up to 70% of your hot water must be heated up in thermal solar panels. The CTE also limits the amount of conventional energies that can be used in different types of buildings. On the Costa for example, it is obligatory that up to 70% of your hot water must come from thermal solar panels. 60% if you main energy source is one other than electricity. The requirement comes down to the figure of 30% if your home is situated in north Spain. We must not forget that there are zones in Spain that have a higher rain index than many parts of England. So, be prepared to see plenty of solar panels on roofs from now on. (Incidentally we architect better roll up our sleeves and find solutions to this very unsightly problem before our homes start looking like factory buildings). Other types of buildings which are not residential i.e. Hypermarkets, Hotels etc have to install photovoltaic panels so to produce a percentage of the electricity that they are consuming as well as the thermal panels. This added requirement will depend on of the size of building (for Hypermarkets from 5.000m2, hotels from 100 sleeping units etc) It is obvious that all these new obligations emanating from the CTE would mean better-quality, more secure and less expensive buildings to maintain. However there is a price to pay for all these of course. According to the Spanish Ministry of Housing the increase cost on an average home should be from 1% to 3% of the total cost of construction. I personally think it is double that figure, especially when we take into account the improvements require to comply the sound insulation section of CTE. The section on sound insulation is so innovating and has such a far-reaching impact in the construction process that will have to be explained in another issue of Round Town News.

DIRECTIONS
Put the whole potatoes and parsnips in a large pan of cold water. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 5 minutes until just tender but still firm. Drain, then set aside to cool completely before chilling in the fridge for 30 minutes.
Grate the potatoes and parsnips in a bowl, season well. In a non-stick frying pan over a high heat and add a good amount of olive oil. Ovarian Cysts OVARIAN CYSTS are fluid-filled sacs that can form in the ovaries. They are very common particularly common during childbearing years. Ovarian cysts may affect both ovaries at the same time, or they may only affect one. The vast majority of ovarian cysts are non-cancerous (benign), although a small number are cancerous (malignant). Cancerous cysts are more common in women who have been through the menopause.
Types:
Functional cyst – the most common type of ovarian cyst that forms during ovulation when either the egg is not released or the follicle (the sac that in which the egg forms) does not dissolve after the egg is released. Cyst formation secondary to an underlying disease such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome or Endometriosis. Pathological cyst – cysts that occur due to abnormal cell growth. These are much less common. Cystadenomas – formed from cells on the surface of the ovary. Dermoid cyst – containing tissue similar to that in other parts of the body (skin, hair, teeth).
Symptoms:
Often, ovarian cysts don’t cause any symptoms and you may not realise you have one until you have a routine women’s check-up Symptoms of ovarian cysts and tumors include:
Pain or bloating in the abdomen Difficulty urinating, or frequent need to urinate Dull ache in the lower back Pain during sexual intercourse Painful menstruation and abnormal bleeding Unexplained weight gain Nausea or vomiting Loss of appetite, feeling full quickly despite having eaten little If any of these symptoms are noted it is important to see your Family Doctor as ovarian cysts can also be indicative of ovarian tumours that are cancerous. Ovarian cysts can cause problems if they twist, bleed or rupture. In cases of sudden, severe pelvic pain medical attention should be sought without delay.
Diagnosis:
A lump may be felt during a routine pelvic examination. If a lump is felt further investigations will be carried out which may include blood tests (to look for cancer markers), ultrasound (via a vaginal probe) and laparoscopy (to look directly into the abdomen with a fine telescope).
Treatment:
Most ovarian cysts will go away on their own. If you don’t have any bothersome symptoms, especially if you haven’t yet gone through the menopause, your doctor may advocate ‘’watchful waiting.’’ The doctor won’t treat you but will check
you every one to three months to see if there has been any change in the cyst. The contraceptive pill may relieve the pain from ovarian cysts. By preventing ovulation, the risk of new cysts forming is reduced. Surgery is an option if the cyst doesn’t go away, grows, or causes pain. There are two types of surgery: Laparoscopy (the cyst is removed via a telescope-like instrument) which is a minimally invasive procedure, or if necessary (if the cyst is large) laparotomy which necessitates a surgical incision into the abdomen.
Fertility:
Ovarian cysts don’t usually prevent pregnancy but in some cases it can be harder to conceive. If a cyst is to be surgically removed fertility preservation should be first discussed with the surgeon. This may mean removing just the cyst and leaving the ovary intact, or only removing one ovary

Ann Mather, Qualified and Registered Nutritionist, joins WE Health Club COME ALONG TO MEET HER AND RECEIVE A FREE BODY COMPOSITION ANALYSIS TUESDAY, 19th APRIL at 10.00 a.m. No appointment required!
There are a plethora of health risks associated with unhealthy levels of body fat. We all need some fat but what we want is the good fat! What we don’t want is the bad fat. Too much subcutaneous fat (stored immediately under the skin) and visceral fat (wrapped around organs in the belly area) are the key indicators of health risk. In general, if a male has more than 22% body fat, and a woman more than 26% body fat, it is an indication that there is too much subcutaneous and visceral fat in the body. When we hop onto a pair of scales, what does it tell us? Well… apart from what our total body weight is, it tells us nothing! Because muscle weighs more than fat, two individuals of the same height with the same body weight can have completely different body compositions due to the amount of fat and muscle mass they each possess. Tests such as BMI or using callipers are not an accurate measure of body fat. BMI is simply your height x your weight. Callipers measure only subcutaneous fat. The only way to get an accurate measure of subcutaneous and visceral fat is to have a body composition analysis using a bioimpedence analyser. Knowing your total body fat, as well as some other key body composition measurements, will enable you to more effectively and efficiently achieve and maintain healthy levels of lean and fat body mass. Pego golf society It was a great day to hold the third major tournament of the year, at Oliva Nova, and on an exquisite morning on the Northern Costa Blanca, we had a full house of 52 players and members for the playing of this very important trophy.
The scene was set, as Oliva was looking a picture, with great greens and lush fairways, and there is not a better golf course in the whole of the Costa Blanca. It was looking and playing magnificent. We were delighted to have three guests and they were, Graham Wise, Michel Grin and John Buchan, and all were warmly welcomed by our Captain David O’Connor and the remaining 49 members. So the stage was set with 13 groups of four all wanting to win. The results of the “Memorial Trophy” competition were follows :Division 1 1st Place was Steve Crossan playing off 13.7 with a net score of 65 2nd Place was Tricia Chapman playing off 33.6 with a net score of 67. 3rd Place was John Nicol playing off 24.5 with a net score of 70. 4th Place was Charlie Miller playing off 16.7 with a net score of 70
5th Place was Colin Foster playing off 10.6 with a net score of 71 6th Place was David Blakely playing off 21.5 with a net score of 71 The player of the day without doubt was Steve Crossan with a gross 79 and a net 65. There was only one 2 today and that was by Colin Foster, who scooped the pool. The “Balls in the Water” prize was not won today as the total number of balls in the water was 140. That’s a lot of balls. Nearest the hole at Hole 5 with their second shot was Martin Gates with 2.9 meters and nearest the hole, at hole 16, was Colin Foster with 2.30 meters. One match play today and that was that Stella Fox and Peter Rapley finished All Square, and will have to do it all over again. If any member or guest would like to play with the Pego Golf Society, and who wouldn’t, as we are playing a “Yellow Ball Competition” please contact our secretary and send an e-mail to Penny Barden at pegohandicapsec@gmail.com or enter through our website www.pegogolfsociety.com. A warm welcome awaits you.
CRUM take honours
CARTAGENA’S SENIOR A team travelled to Murcia on Saturday and a top of the league decider with CRUM in front of over 200 fans. The game was exceptionally hard fought with great running rugby but the home side enjoyed a 28-5 victory and the 2016 title. At the start of the match the sides were lying first and second with only a three point gap between them and both teams threw themselves into the game. CRUM were the better side but the final score should have been closer and the victors were helped by some questionable decisions from the referee. However, earlier Cartagena’s Under 18s enjoyed a 22-54 win against CRUM with fitness the key factor and at half time it was still anyone’s game. The second half was all Cartagena and in a show of skill and fitness, the team scored try after try and outclassed the home team. Under 18’s score 22-60
Torrential rain on Tuesday and very black and overcast sky on Wednesday morning left everyone wondering whether the game would go ahead. Greenlands Winter League squad sit at the bottom half of the table, but at home they have only lost one of their last six games (4 – 8) to this year’s champions. On arrival it was still very overcast and although the green was playable the overnight downpour had left a soaking wet carpet surface, which made the going very heavy. There were two contenders for top rink this week and Skip Jeff Richards, Tony Lawley, Derek Mawson and Linda Richards were the winners by one shot. A great 6 shots on the 5th end and winning the remaining 5 ends of the game saw them securing 2 valuable away points for the BBC. Not to be outdone Maggie Lawley and her team of Jacquie Roberts, Mary Cockell and Tim Woodcock took a further 2 points winning18 – 9. The got off to a great start and controlled their game throughout. The overall result was 4 points to BBC and 8 to Greenlands. This is a venue where BBC has struggled to win and had managed only 2 points on their previous visit so 4 points is better, these 4 points mean that BBC has climbed into the 3rd position and with only 1 game left in this season it is all to play for.

The countdown for the end of Season run in for the 22nd A.F.F.L. as begun. The current leaders Joe’s team Keith Lard F.C. are coming under pressure from the chasing pack.Scott’s team Dog Dale & Darren’s team The Pheonix Club have both edged a little closer to the Leaders. The Pheonix Club swapped places with Plaistow13hammers and are now in the 3rd spot.Rob’s Scunny F.C. & Pearson’s Smashers remain in 5th & 6th place tucked in behind the Leaders.Down at the foot of the table Lyn’s Handbrake City are imitating Aston Villa and are just waiting for the trap door to open. In our U.K.T.V.Spain Junior League the 3 teams at the top have opened up a 62 point gap from 4th placed Gino’s Minions.Nathan’s Tyrannosuarez-Rex F.C.at the moment have a 35 point advantage over Last Seasons winners of this Section Super Rhys then comes young Harley’s team Ginger Ninjar. In the last couple of weeks its been all change at the bottom as Marcus’s Salford Sausages have dropped right into the relegation zone and are now trailing Lily’s Sponge Bob by 17 points. Maxine’s Plaistow13hammers had a low scoring week at the top of our Mark Carter Ladies Section mainly because of West Ham’s entertaining 3-3 draw with Arsenal. Her team is packed full of Hammers players unfortunately for Maxine she didn’t pick this weeks top Fantasy Player Andy Carroll who slammed in a Hat-trick against the Gunners.Karen’s Ceasar’s Blackcats moved back in contention and joined Joanna’s Hup Hannah City in joint 2nd place.Jin’s Dream Team have taken a lead over Liz’s White Lions in the chase for a 20 euro voucher sponsored by QUICK SAVE Supermarket in Albir. James’s Jukeboxers extended their lead at the top of our Leonard Knowles Construction Golden Boot League to a very slender 11 points over David’s Pearson’s Smashers.Swansea’s Sigurdsson and Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero were on the goal trail this week for the Boxers while his top scorer Spur’s Harry Kane failed to score in Spur’s impressive 3-0 win against Manchester United. For the 2nd week running we have 3 teams with the lowest score.Rachel’s Revenge,Corona Kings and the aptly named No Hopers all finished up with only 1 point when the average score was 17 points. All 3 will join our highest scoring team which was Jimmy’s team Simple who notched up 47 points in our Monthly Premier Imports Draw for a case of Cava.Last Month’s winner was Rachel’s Revenge.(she does like a tipple ) Jimmy’s team Simple have taken the lead in our Manager of the Month for April which is being kindly sponsored by Debbie & Paul at the Restaurant Our Plaice in the Sun in Albir who specialize in a super Fish & Chips as well other tasty dishes. The Pheonix Club are in 2nd place 10 points behind the leaders and 1 point ahead of Andy’s team Fred West XI. Overall it’s been a good week for Jimmy who at the moment is on holiday in Las Vegas as he has also won our Breakfast for 2 at Rafters sponsored by Kate after climbing up 21 places to number 85th position in our main League. This Weekend the Semi-Finals of our RTN Knock Out Cup Competition takes place. The 2 favourites Dog Dale & The Pheonix Club have been kept apart in the Draw.Dog Dale will play against our only Lady Managers team left in Jin’s Dream Team while 2nd favourites The Pheonix Club are up against Stephen’s team Bribed by Blatter.A Lady Manager won this last year when Pam’s People lifted the Trophy. Next week there will be plenty of action taking place in the Fantasy with Mid-week games and a 6th round F.A.Cup Replay so don’t forget to follow your team as we approach final run in by visiting our very popular website which is www.alfazffl.com or if you can’t access a computer you can always pop into one of the Bars which support us by displaying all the League Tables and results on their Notice Boards. In Albir The Local and Wyndhams,in Alfaz Robin;s Nest,in Benidorm The Union Jack and in Moraira Barilloche.

Par Motor, your Citroen dealer in Benijofar PAR MOTOR is Benijofar’s oldest and most established Citroen dealer. The family business was founded many years ago by Antonio García González as a repair shop for bicycles and motorbikes, becoming a Ducatti dealership in the days when cars were rarely seen in Benijofar or this part of the Costa Blanca. Back then the company was called Autos Huertas and cars became more popular they started to sell and repair cars. Then 29 years ago, in 1988, the company was offered the opportunity to become an official Citroen Dealership, which they have been every since. The company is now run by Antonio’s grand-daughters, Noelia and Mariola. Eight years ago, when their father, Antonio García Huertas officially retired sisters Noelia and Mariola García took over the family business, under the watchful eye of their father Antonio and have grown the
business into Benjofar’s most successful full service automobile centre. The name PAR MOTOR has two meanings: PAR: being the power of two, in this care the two sisters, and PAR MOTOR, which in English would be an engine that is perfectly balanced. Directly across the road from their Citroen dealership they have opened Huertas Multiauto, where they offer new cars and a selection of quality pre-owned cars for Audi, Volkswagen, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan and Peugeot,. This new auto centre will have their official open day on April 30th, from 9.00am to 2.00pm and everyone in invited to attend. PAR MOTOR and HUERTAS MULTIAUTO offer everything one could ask for from a car dealership. Not only do they have a superb selection of new and pre-owned cars, all with guarantee, but they have a full service centre for any type of repairs or maintenance for all makes of cars, plus a turn key service when you purchase a car. They offer finance, insurance, car rentals, name transfer and
everything you might require to purchase your next car. If you need to change your driving licence to a Spanish one, they can also help with this service and save you hours travelling to Alicante in the hope you have all the paperwork they will ask you for. The staff also speak English, German, Dutch, Russian and Spanish. Being an official Citroen dealer they can offer all the very best prices and deals when it comes to looking for your new car. You can trade your old car in against a new one and if available they will will apply special government plans too.
