Robert, said to have many friends in the British and Spanish communities, has four children and four grandchildren. A former navy sailor, he originally came from Edinburgh, but later worked as a psychiatric nurse at the famous Priory Clinic and retired to Spain from Eastbourne in Sussex. The Guardia Civil is hunting the driver – branded a coward for running – and has released pictures of the three-year-old car, first registered in Edinburgh.

Nothing can bring back the “popular” 61-year-old but the family deserve justice and to know what happened and why a loved one died alone in a Spanish street.

Torrevieja Town Hall held three minutes silence on Friday in memory of the Chilean resident Johana Palma found buried metres from her home.

Her disappearance was reported by a friend and was being investigated by until the grim discovery of human remains were found in the foyer of the building where she lived with her husband and their two young children. Women has opened a case against her husband, who was arrested by the Guardia Civil. Mayor José Manuel Dolón, who accompanied the victim’s mother and some relatives and friends, said: “Everyone was worried while Johana was missing and unfortunately it has come to a sad and dramatic end.” He added it was important gender violence was reported by the community. “We cannot look the other way because in the end aggressors end up carrying out their threats.” The telephone number for reporting gender violence is 016.

Savour the flavour of Spain DICK HANDSCOMBE has lived in Spain full time since 1993 and believes integration was a necessary “challenge” for expats moving to the sun. bY Jack troughton He purchased his home in La Drova, inland from Gandia, next to the Spanish community of Barx, in 1987 initially as a holiday home. And his experiences as a writer, gardener, and traveller exploring his new home country, meant he was invited to join the ‘Our Local Ambassador’ scheme being run by the British Consulate in Alicante. The amateur ambassadors have been selected to share their experiences to help fellow Brits be able to make a successful home in Spain. Dick said: “See the integration challenge as the process of seeking out opportunities for mixing with Spaniards and experiencing and contributing to Spanish cultural activities.” He said this involved not only expats accepting they were in a foreign country but also embracing its different cultures, history, values, life experiences and expectations. To avoid “a major struggle”, he advised people to first research where they wished to buy or rent a property. This gave the opportunity to see what an area was like 20 years ago, how it had changed and how it would continue to develop. NEIGHBOURS He said anywhere with a 80% or 90% British population with expat shops and restaurants made it more difficult to integrate compared with neighbourhoods that remained largely Spanish. “Be courageous and start to learn to speak at least a few words of Spanish from day one – focus on speaking and add to your vocabulary and grammar month by month...conversation practice and not Cambridge certificates is what one needs for day to day interaction with neighbours, in bars and restaurants and in shops.” Dick said people could maters the ‘present’ and ‘future’ tenses first; and recognise they may never need or master all 13 forms of the subjunctive. He said joining local Anglo-Spanish groups helped open doors to “hidden” secrets, while inviting Spanish neighbours around for a drink and a snack would gain credit for trying to integrate. Mandy told STV News: “We don’t have a clue what happened or who was driving the vehicle. Police are saying there may have

been three passengers. “I’ll stay out here as long as it takes. I’m not on a witch-hunt; I just don’t understand how someone can leave someone lying in the middle of the street like that, get out of their car and just run away. You wouldn’t leave a dog like that. “I just want to know what happened and who did this. I had to identify his body and it was totally horrific...he was a mess.” The Civil Guard has the dented Land Rover Discovery Sdv6 secure in a police pound. Officers have vowed to work hard to find the driver and take him to court. And in an appeal, the force said: “Driver. If you are reading this we give you some advice; sooner or later we’ll catch you. “If you present yourself voluntarily at your nearest Guardia Civil station, things will be better for you.” Robert had lived in Spain for some 15 years. Mandy said: “As a father he was absolutely brilliant. He has four grandchildren as well and he’s absolutely brilliant with my daughter. They got on so well. “He was a practical joker and was very popular over here. He had loads of friends, Spanish and British, and they’ve been a good support.” She believes someone can help catch the driver. “Anyone with any information, no matter how small, no matter how insignificant, please tell the police. Someone must know something; someone must know who owns that car.”

Lily dies of rare disease By Rhiannan Bell A special team of Civil Protection volunteers has been set up to deal with environmental work and sporting events in the areas around Torreveija’s beaches.

As well as helping at sporting events, supporting security and lifeguard services, the unit will have a special responsibilty should an environmental episode occur. Volunteers will be on hand should there be a polluting spillage in the sea, help the environmental department with beached animals – and look out for endangered species. Councillor Javier Manzanares announced : “We’re going to use the end of the summer to define this group’s work so we get the most from the collaboration. “We’re going to train the volunteers in specific tasks to which they will be assigned, which will in turn help to support the security and lifeguard services”. Mafia fugitive arrested ONE OF Italy’s most-wanted criminals was arrested this week holidaying in Benidorm with his family. by jack troughton Salvatore Mariano, 40, is a member of the Camorra – the Naples mafia – and vanished in March when 33 colleagues were held in a raid and 20 million Euros seized. He is accused of being a member of a criminal organisation and drug trafficking. Mariano was on the Italian list of the 100 most-wanted fugitives. The Italian was tracked down to one of the resort’s top luxury beachfront hotels where he had rented a suite in a joint operation between the Guardia Civil and Italy’s Carabinieri. Officers posed as hotel staff to make the arrest; they pretended to be room service to enter the suite and held Mariano in his room. The fugitive is now being held in custody to await extradition back to Italy.

AN EARTHQUAKE measuring 2.4 on the Richter scale meant a rude awakening

for people living in the Torrevieja area on Sunday morning.

The National Graphic Institute said quake struck at 8.38am; the epicentre was south west of the town and 18km deep.

Domstic dispute By Rhiannan Bell An Alicante man has been arrested for allegedly making threats against his partner and an attempted assault against a Local Police officer in Elda. The incident occurred last weekend, when the man was reported for throwing things from the balcony of his home in Calle Doctor Arruga, damaging to vehicles parked on the street below. Elda Local Police arrived at the scene and were told that the situation had arisen following an argument between the man and his girlfriend. As the police approached the man advising him to calm down and ‘lose the attitude’, the man who had been threatening his girlfriend turned and tried to attack one of the officers with a knife. However, he was quickly overpowered and arrested and no one was injured in the incident.

‘Burkini’ Bathing THE CONTROVERSIAL ‘burkini’ will be permitted on the beaches and at swimming pools in Murcia. by Jack Troughton Law makers have decided there is no formal legislation to force a ban similar to French resorts where the garment has been outlawed for ‘security reasons’. Several municipalities in the region admitted a lack of regulations regarding swimwear other than that in municipal pools – where street clothes are prohibited but wetsuits are allowed...which are not dissimilar to the ‘burkini’. Local police and the region’s departments for Tourism and Beaches have confirmed that there had been no known complaints received from the public. And it means further amendmemts to existing bylaws are likely regarding a dress code at public pools or beaches at this stage.

Beach Death By Rhiannan Bell A man died this week while bathing early in the morning on the beach at La Zenia in Orihuela – before the lifeguard service started. The man, aged 58, was of German nationality and believed to be on holiday in the area with his family. It is undersatood there was a swell oin the sea at the time but it is not known if theis palyed a part in the tragedy. A psot mortem will be held to determine the cause of death.

consumer rights has denounced cinemas in Alicante, Murcia and Tenerife for not allowing customers into their premises who had purchased food and beverages outside of the facility. by Rhiannan Bell The cinema groups receiving the denunciations are Axión in Alcoy, Alicante, Neocine in Cartagena, Murcia, and Multicines in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The consumer association states that the main activity offered by these facilities is for film viewing and not for the sale of food and drink. Therefore, the introduction of such goods for sale in their premises is an option for consumers and should not be seen as a loss of sales if customers choose to bring their own or buy from other outlets. The association has been aware of the situation for some time and is encouraging anyone refused entry for having purchased food at another place or for bringing their own snacks, to report it. FACUA advises that if the cinema allows the consumption of food and beverages on the premises by selling such products themselves, then they cannot refuse entry to those bringing their own food and drink.

Animal abuse has increased in Alicante with complaints more than doubling in the past year with public awareness boosted by a new Department of Animal Protection.

While not all reports are of a very serious nature. More frequently they are of thoughtless neglect by pet owners – for example in situations where dogs are left alone on balconies. Poisoning of pigeons and the maltreatment of cats have also rated high on the list of abuse to the body. Councillor Marisol Moreno said: “Citizens see that there is a management response to their reports and so they make the effort.”

Police seize pirate goods By Jack Troughton POLICE IN Torrevieja have seized 1,132 counterfeit products in a clampdown against pirate traders during the first two weeks of August. The operation was launched following series of complaints from members of the public about so-called ‘blanket sellers’ and a man suspected of being a ring leader behind the illicit trade was also arrested.

A SHOPPING centre carpark became the venue for an illegal racing ‘meet’ as dramatised in the ‘Fast and Furious’ films. by Rhiannan Bell More than 500 youngsters gathered at the Mandarache Shopping Centre car park in Cartagena last Friday night to show off their cars. According to witnesses it involved engine tuning, revving engines and wheel spinning antics. The authorities were caught by surprise by the huge number of those that turned up for the evening which was arranged illegally by the profile ‘Stanceslide’ through the social network Facebook. Local police arrived to find the party in full swing. They monitored the activities but did not choose to intervene in the festivities as they didn’t want to ‘encourage any possible friction’ between partygoers and the officers. Eventually, after much mascarading and showing off, most of the vehicles involved followed a planned route to Portman where the party ended peacefully.

Immigrants land at Cartagena By Rhiannan Bell A new wave of small boats arrived along the coast of Cartagena carrying a total 30 immigrants on board. All occupants, who were male, some underage, and of Algerian nationality, were reported to have been in good health. The number of foreigners reaching the shores of the region since the beginning of July, amounts to 168 people. The first wave came during the last weeks of July, when 118 people arrived, the largest illegal landing of the summer. The most common immigrants were recorded as being from the sub-Sahara and Algeria.

By Rhiannan Bell A dispute at work between an electrician, 48, and a plumber, 36 resulted in assault and a serious internal injury for the victim. Whilst working on a renovation in Albufereta, Alicante, they became involved in a heated argument about the refurbishment. As the disagreement between the pair escalated and became physical, the electrician stabbed the plumber with a pair of sharp cutting pliers that he had been holding. The electrician realising the serious damage he had caused his co-worker immediately called the police who arrived with medical personnel in tow. The aggressor was arrested and the injured party taken to hospital where it was discovered his spleen had been damaged and later had to be removed.

Thunder Bolt by Jack Troughton

SPRINTER USAIN Bolt raced into the history books and Olympic retirement after winning his ninth gold medal in Rio after Jamaica took the 4x100m relay. Described as “flawless and untouchable”, the runner ended his Olympic career by claiming an unprecedented ‘triple triple’ after also winning the 100m and 200m in Brazil – the only man to win all three sprint events at three Games. Bolt won the ninth gold medal two days before his 30th birthday and plans to retire after the 2017 World Championships in London. He said he would not compete in Tokyo in 2020 – despite pressure from his relay team mates trying to persuade him to continue until the next games, when he will be aged 34, to become “immortal”. His haul of nine gold medals is the joint highest among Olympic athletes. He is equal with USA sprinter and long jumper Carl Lewis, who competed over four Games, and Finnish longdistance runner Paavo Nurmi. And asked how he would celebrate, Bolt answered: I’m going to stay up late and have fun. I never knew this would happen when I started out...my team came through for me tonight...as long as we got the baton round, it was never in doubt. “It’s a brilliant feeling. It’s been a long road. I’m happy, but I’m relieved. It is great to be in the record books as one of the greatest. I’m proud of myself.”

Pool Vandalism VANDALS HAVE been slammed as “mindless” after an Orihuela sports centre was attacked forcing the closure of facilities as repairs were made.

nounced the people who broke into the sports centre in La Aparecida, damaging doors and locks.

It led to the pool’s closure while repairs were made and

items stolen were replaced for health and safety reasons; including fire extinguishers, speakers and lighting.

A white substance was also detected in the pool and for this reason the National Police advised closing the area to the public until it was deemed safe for bathers after the water was tested. This is not the first episode of vandalism within the region’s sports facilities, according to the councillor. “It is a great disservice to the local residents who enjoy the facilities as well as an added strain on the municipal coffers.”

Everyone’s a winner YOUNGSTERS ATTENDING the Magnets 2016 this year enjoyed Olympic Games themed fun and all received a ‘gold medal’. by Jack Troughton

The 13th edition of this club held at La Siesta Church, near Torrevieja, ran from 25th July and ended yesterday (Thursday). Run by Steve and Irene-Maria Campbell since it was first launched, Magnets was held each Thursday and through Olympics-style games, songs, Bible memory verses, stories, quizzes and crafts, the children learned how following Jesus was more than gold. Stories each week were based on the ‘Wordless Book’; which has only coloured pages representing a Gospel story – gold for heaven, black for sin, red for Christ’s

blood, white for a clean heart and green for growth. Each week the children made and took home a craft item which reminded them of the lesson they learned that day. And yesterday’s prize-giving saw every child receiving a bag of gifts for their attendance and participation. They were also awarded the coveted ‘gold’ medal. More than 200 youngsters have enjoyed the free club since it was first launched, many returning year after year; asked what they thought of the club, kids variously answered: ‘It’s a good place to come in the summer and have fun’; ‘You meet new friends and get exercise during the games’; and ‘I like to hear the stories and learn about Jesus.’

Why settle for less than the best? by

I understand, and accept, that some people are finding it very difficult making the decision to purchase a property in Spain mainly due to Brexit and the Pound not reacting well to the situation. Therefore, in the meantime, it may be worth considering renting until the Pound improves. If you do this, remember you will need to insure your contents and any valuables you may have. These also include public liability which can be adjusted to your requirements, this is a very good idea, as you never know what is around the corner. The policy can then be transferred if you move and be changed to a house and contents insurance, should you purchase a property. When you pick up the local newspapers, there is often a great deal of advertising and articles on house insurance from various companies, not forgetting the banks. If you read my articles and listen to Sound Advice on Bay Radio, you will know my feelings on banks selling insurance. They are not specialists and it would be very unwise for you to accept the verbal word of “it covers everything”. Your home, contents and valuable items, including jewellery are, of course, your biggest asset. Therefore wouldn’t it be wise to spend some time on comparing policies to make sure you fully understand what coverage you are receiving? However, for non-Spanish speakers, how can you compare if your policy conditions are not available in English (ours are)? I can assure you there are many misleading statements, both written and verbal, when it comes to house insurance. You could find that your coverage is limited to a restricted amount of items and the number of times you can claim each

year. My company offers three levels of cover: Basic, Plus and Premium. Many of the house policies offered by other companies are no better than the Basic; the Plus policy is a very good compromise; whilst the Premium has certain advantages and is more in line with what Ex Pats are used to. You must be aware that very few companies insure jewellery and watches, especially outside of the home. Liberty is able to provide this cover on individually itemised pieces over a particular value. Liberty Seguros premiums are usually higher than other companies and you should never choose your policy on price alone – it is far too important to do so. Never forgetting, of course, that house insurance is vital when it comes to total loss. One further point, is whether you have the option of accidental damage on both contents and building? Accidental damage not only covers the contents but also the damage caused from earth quake tremors, spillage, accident and fire damage to computers, and the recovery of IT data in certain circumstances. In my opinion the Liberty Seguros house insurance is the best on the market and this is recognised, by some of the competition. They are one of the largest insurers in the world and they do know what they are doing. Why settle for less than the best? I want everyone to be aware of the importance of reading and understanding your policy conditions. You need to know exactly what your coverage is. Do not listen to “everything is covered”. That is never the case. We can tailor the policy to your particular requirements. Whilst considering moving to Spain and, either renting or buying, you will need to consider your health care. If you are not entitled to the free National

Health in Spain it is something that it is vital to take advice on, as the EHIC card will only cover you in case of emergency and does not provide on-going treatment. If you are intending to stay for more than 180 days each year and applying for Residencia, you need to provide a health insurance certificate showing that you have a fully paid private health insurance for one year. A certificate is also required from the bank confirming at least three months of income of € 649 per month per person or a lump sum in the bank of € 12,000. You will also need an up to date Padron certificate, the original and copies of your passport and NIE certificate. With regard to the health insurance certificate, please do not expect to walk into one of my offices, purchase health care, and walk out with your certificate. Buying a property in Spain? Urbanised properties not properly completed In many articles we have reminded readers who wish to buy a property in Spain, of the need to perform due diligence. The purchase of a property represents a very significant investment and it is essential to take all precautions to avoid possible problems, which in some cases could otherwise cause very negative consequences. One common problem are properties that are registered in the land registry and cadastre in a proper way, that are considered urban, and have an occupation license, water and electricity definitive supplies, etc., meaning the properties appear to be in a perfect legal status. But some of these properties are on unconsolidated urban land and do not have the legal status of SOLAR, which means that the development or urbanization works in the area are not completed (the property is not properly urbanized), and under certain circumstances this could require that owners would have to complete the urbanization works, and sometimes will be forced to construct pavements, street lighting, etc. The Regional Administrations (autonomous communities) in Spain have their own rules, for example in the Valencian Community, currently the Law 5/2014 is in effect, of Planning, Urbanism and Landscape, , in its article 177 and in relation to the properties that are considered legally solar, it is said: - Solar is a plot legally split and urbanized according with technical standards, etc. - It is also said that they should have: • a) Access to them by a paved road. • b) Potable water and electricity, with the flow and sufficient power for the planned building. • c) Connection to the main sewerage connected to a water treatment purifying plant. • d) Pedestrian access, pavements and streetlights … Therefore, it is essential to check whether the property you are buying or want to buy in Spain, has or not the legal status of SOLAR and if it is urbanized, because it is possible for you to be forced to perform or complete the urbanization works or provide it with the works required by the standard, which can mean a considerable cost. The real estate agents and advisers do not usually check it, and is not for the notary to do it. Could Italy tear the EU APART? Europe is heading towards a “cataclysmic event” that could lead to the collapse of the euro and the end of the European project as we know it, according to Nobel prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz. In the run-up to the UK’s vote to leave the European Union, Italy’s litany of problems had gone largely unnoticed. However, Italy the eurozone’s third largest economy not only faces political turmoil but enormous economic strife too and a banking industry on the verge of collapse. “One theme which could dictate near term direction for markets and which arguably Brexit has reignited and brought back to the forefront is the ailing and fragile state of the Italian banking sector,” Deutsche Bank’s Jim Reid noted in his Early Morning Reid note back in July. Italy´s financial sector is plagued by an enormous surfeit of bad loans so great that the government was, in April, forced into rallying bank executives, insurers and investors to put €5 billion (£4.2 billion, $5.57 billion) behind a rescue fund for its weakest banks. EU rules are rigid and state that bond holders should bail out the banks as in most countries the holders of the bonds are sophisticated people who have made returns in excess of the safe rate that represents the risk. But if you look at Italy it represents a case where for a variety of historical reasons, among the bondholders there appear to be a lot of ordinary individuals. If that is the case, when you make them bear the cost you are really going after depositors, this happened in Cyprus and to a certain extent is what happened in Spain with CAM Bank and Bankia. It would appear that the EU rule that you ought to let the bondholders bear the cost looks like it may not be the right rule for Italy. European rigidity may have very high costs both for democracy and for Italy, and for in the end, if there’s a referendum in Italy, the future of the eurozone. Yvonne, we all think that we are going to live forever, but it is not so, and sometimes spirituality comes closest when there has been a bereavement. Making contact with somebody you love in the Spirit World is not easy, but it isn’t difficult either; and you shouldn’t make it so. Be warned that most people in Spirit need a good six months to find their feet in the Spirit World and in that time communication can be very difficult, however not impossible, it depends greatly on the departed. When he wants to make contact your brother must seek this for himself. Whether this is through a Spiritual Medium or by himself, belief means everything; and it won’t be a laughing matter until those two are together and the good times can be shared! Let me know if I can help in anyway in this uniting process.

Running out of disc space

Hi Aunty, For some time now I have been getting a pop -up telling me I am running out of disc space and need to get rid of surplus files. However, when I have freed up some files like ditching delete bin, removing programmes with little use, it still says I need to free up disc space?? But where from? Roy. Reply: Usually the message will state WHICH drive is running out of space....as some PCs have multiple drives in use and available. And Windows does require some hard disk space to function, and this message may appear if that â&#x20AC;&#x153;workingâ&#x20AC;? space is not available. You can check the drives and their available space in Explorer. It may also be a case of archiving personal files (photos videos) onto a separate external hard drive.... removing the need to have them stored on the PC at all times. Response: Thanks for your reply, I have gone to explorer and analysed then fragmented, it took quite sometime but the pop up seems to have now disappeared. Hope this now has done the job.

Make the best of plant layering

The southern half of my garden survived the recent weekend of forty degrees centigrade well without a watering system or excessive hosepipe watering due largely to the layering effect of the various layers of plants as happens in a tropical jungle and did in ancient English hedgerows in my early gardening days before small fields lost their hedgerows to create great fields to enable combine harvesters from North America to be used economically. Along the back terrace a deep rooted twenty seven year old oleander hedge with higher integrated naturally seeded bird dropped carob, plum and nispero trees plus planted jacaranda and pomegranate trees. The right and left side or the back garden are also high hedges as wind breaks, to again create morning and evening shade and to reduce noise and car exhaust pollutions. Again trees give height and depth of shade for smaller plants. The collection comprises self -seeded carob and acacia trees tree, a planted apricot tree partially smothered with thickly growing jasmine, and purposely planted quince and avocado trees â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the latter originally a UK house plant grown from the seed of a Marks and Spencer avocado. The high trees create a canopy effect with shade to protect shorter planted and self-germinated trees and stimulate the self-germination of dwarf bird dropped trees and shrubs. As in Costa Rica jungle parks birds roost and flowering climbers â&#x20AC;&#x201C; bignonias cape honey suckle and bower vine brighten up the upper reaches and help hide the neighbouring house. Then at lower height and a little in front are the shade trees that extend the hedge shade forward and in places densify the upper dappled shade. This helps build up a floor of rotting leaves to self-fertilise the soil, a natural mulch to retain moisture and prevent weeds from growing. These shorter trees include tila, ginkgo balboa, bay, bottle brush, justicia, Jupiter, judas and bird of paradise trees. Then forward of the mini forest stretching to the house are medium height shrubs such orange and lemon, a collection of sages, passion flowers growing through the old almond tree, bignonia , buddleja, echiums, agapanthus and society garlics. In the centre a lavender bed surrounds the well head fountain and pond. The latter with a mass of summer flowering water lilies sheltering a shoal of fish, a family of frogs and toads regularly hatching bright red damsel flies and silvery blue dragon flies. Shorty the lavender with be cut and distilled for oil. Unseen in the photograph is a 28 metre long rockery on the face and top of a centuries old monastery built dry stone terrace. This is largely planted with ground

cover succulents and ground cover rosemary and sages through which rhizomes arise and flower in the spring from a shallow root layer dampened by spring showers. Finally below the railings seen in the photograph are metre high herbaceous shrubs for perfume, colour, handy infusion leaves and a barrier to flying insect. A very old lemon verbena still sprouts annually to provide the leaves for relaxing summer infusions and lantanas, as under all widows around the house, help keep mosquitos way â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but unfortunately not summer and autumn flies. Scent is added by a galan de noche shrub and several mirabilis plants. Hope that anatomy of part of my garden and the concept of players of plant growth is of interest. This article is a sort of swan song as next weeks will be my last.

We are definitely talking major stalking! The business of stalking is an ugly one, least it was many moons ago, with books and movies made to highlight a behavioural pattern that could land a person in the clink. In more recent years ´The Stalker´ has adopted a more accepted role to the point where if a famous person doesn´t have a stalker they are definitely not a ´A´ Lister!

´Kong: Skull Island´ is due for release on March next year and stars Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L Jackson, John Goodman and Brie Larson ... Its prequel time for ´Prime Suspect,´ and Stefanie Martini, star of the recent ITV period drama ´Doctor Thorne,´ has the enviable task of playing Mirren’s hard-bitten detective Jane Tennison, a tough act for young Stephanie to follow. The six part series features lots of the current crop of talented young actors like Blake Morrison (Neil from The Inbetweeners), as Tennison’s superior DS Spencer Gibbs. Worried about my Grandson My daughter doesn’t seem to understand that wrapping her son up in cotton wool is not good for him. He is molly-coddled beyond belief. He is about to go to senior school, with limited social skills, the means to stand up for himself or to be responsible. He doesn’t seem to be able to make decisions for himself. The school reports up to now say, that he lacks confidence. I want to help, but don’t know how, because my views are unwelcome. Children raised in rigid environments can miss out on the chance to develop problem-solving skills, because parents are making the decisions for them. It is even more common today, for parents to want to try and protect their children. Teen-age is a time for change, and going to senior school may well help him gain confidence. School Psychologists should pick up on any problems. See how he gets along for a few months. This problem may well sort itself out. Alternatively, the next time he has a birthday, perhaps consider a present of some martial arts classes to boost confidence.

I can’t forget her

I left my wife for a woman I had met at work. All hell broke loose, and my parents, and my wife’s parents, put so much pressure on me to return, that out of guilt and weakness I did. I regret the decision totally. I love my girlfriend. I want to go back but she won’t take my calls or messages. She was devastated at the break-up and left work. What can I do? I feel my life is over. Have I blown it? You were feeling guilty and weak and bowed to pressure from your family. You will have to tell your family that you tried, but made a big mistake. Your girlfriend has been hurt also, and irrespective of whether she will take you back, you should move out and live alone. May be in time you can contact your girlfriend again as a single man, and pick up where you left off. Don’t telephone, but write a sincere, hand-written letter explaining everything, and why you did what you did. Breakups are never easy, but it does no good to live a lie.

Two past tenses We are still working on our mini-series about translating “was” into English, and so far we have looked at the contrasts between the uses of “ser” and “estar” in the past tense. In the examples I have been using, I have deliberately drawn on both of the past tenses in question, but without entering into an explanation of the differences between them. So that is today’s job. First of all I would like to make a general comment about verb tenses. Most people probably realize (and especially those who have the courage to tackle an article like this one) that tenses are related to time – in simple terms: the past, the present and the future. However, many differences between tenses are much more subtle than that. Once we get into the realms of choosing between various past tenses, or various present or future tenses, we are not so much concerned about actual time, but what we want to say about that time. That probably doesn’t make much sense, so I will go straight to the two past tenses we are looking at, and hopefully they will illustrate my point. The first tense (the structure of which we have gone through in previous articles) can be called the

“imperfect” or “imperfecto”, it is sometimes called the “past continuous tense” and I rather like calling it the “descriptive” past tense. It is the one that ends in “aba, abas, aba, ábamos, ábais, aban” or “ía, ías, ía, íamos, íais, ían”. At that point, you are either saying “Oh yes – that one!” or you haven’t got a clue, in which case I can point you to the first six articles in Volume three of Step by Step Spanish (articles 81 to 86). The uses of this tense are, broadly speaking, to talk about habitual or repeated actions in the past: (Cuando vivía en Londres, jugaba al tenis) or to describe something or someone in the past (Mi madre tenía el pelo muy largo). There is a third use of this tense, which is when it specifically contrasts with the other past tense I will refer to next.

word “simple” is a little misleading as far as the formation is concerned. Again, we have gone through the details of this before in previous articles (Step by Step Spanish Volume three articles 98 to 109). The main uses of this tense are to talk about completed actions in the past, (Ayer compré un vestido), events within an enclosed period of time (anoche dormí ocho horas) or biographical or historical events (vivió en el siglo pasado). I think these three examples illustrate the point that it is not so much “when” something happened, or how long it lasted, the important thing when selecting the correct tense is “what” we wish to say about it. In other words, in these examples we are simply stating facts about the finished past, without entering into details and irrespective of their time or duration.

Our second past tense can be called the “preterite” or “pretérito”, the “past simple” or the “past historic” tense. Take your pick with the names – I prefer the “past simple” but the

Marinated Steak Skewers with Caramelised Onion and Potato Perfect for the lazy summer barbecues!! Serves 4

Ingredients • 800g barrel fillet steak – cut into thick 40g cubes • 200ml extra virgin olive oil • 1 clove of garlic - sliced • 1 bay • 1 chopped red chilli • 800g cooked fingerling or Jersey Royal spuds • 2 onions • 30g soft light brown sugar • 70g butter • Juice half lemon • A pinch of salt • Salsa verde • Bunch flat leaf parsley • 75g mint • 1 tbsp tarragon • 15g capers • 15g anchovies • 15g Dijon mustard • Lots of olive oil

Method 1. For the steak. Combine oil, garlic, bay, chilli, add a pinch salt. Add meat, cover and marinate for 2 hours. 2. Put 3 pieces on a skewer, then grill for approximately 5 minutes under hot grill, turning a couple of times. 3. Put the sliced onion in a pan with some oil, the sugar and butter and cook very slowly for 40 minutes until caramelised. 4. Put the cooked spuds in a baking tray and roast for 10 minutes on a high heat. 5. Once roasted toss with the spuds in lemon juice. 6. For the salsa verde. Pulse or chop together. 7. Serve spuds and onion with meat on top, spoon over salsa verde.

Lyme disease The ticks are normally found in woodland and heath areas, they feed on the blood of birds and mammals including humans. The ticks that carry the bacteria that causes Lyme disease are found in the UK and other parts of Europe as well as North America. If detected early on Lyme disease can be treated but if treatment is delayed or doesn’t happen at all there is a risk of severe symptoms that last for life. Signs and symptoms Most people develop a distinctive rash at the site of the bite which is circular. The rash normally develops within 3 to 30 days of being bitten. The rash is distinctive because it looks like a bulls-eye on a dart board. The affected skin will be red and the edges may feel slightly raised. The size of the rash varies a great deal and may get bigger over days or weeks. It is usually about 6 inches across but may be much larger or smaller than this. Some people may also develop rashes on other parts of their bodies. One in three people though, will not develop this rash. Some people experience flu-like symptoms in the early stages such as tiredness, muscle pain, joint pain, headaches, high temperature, chills and neck stiffness. If left untreated more serious symptoms may develop weeks,

months, or years later. These may include: • Pain and swelling in joints • Problems with nervous system such as – numbness and pain in your limbs, paralysis of facial muscles, memory problems and difficulty concentrating. • Heart problems such as myocarditis, pericarditis, heart block and heart failure. • Meningitis which can cause a severe headache, a stiff neck and also sensitivity to light. Some of these problems will slowly get better with treatment, although they can persist if treatment is started late. A few people with Lyme disease will go on to develop longterm symptoms similar to those of fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome. How to remove a tick • If you find a tick on the skin, remove it by gently gripping it as close to the skin as possible, preferably using fine toothed tweezers. Pull steadily away from the skin without twisting or crushing the tick. • Wash the skin with soap and water and apply an antiseptic cream to the area around the bite. • Some vets sell inexpensive devices for removing ticks. When to go to the doctor You should go to the doctors if you develop any of the

Treatment of Lyme disease Lyme disease is treated with antibiotics. Most people require a two to four week course depending on the stage of the disease. You can reduce the risk by: • Keeping to footpaths and not walking in long grass • Wearing long sleeved tops and long trousers that you can tuck into socks • Wear light coloured clothes so the ticks are easily visible • Use insect repellent on exposed skin • Inspect your skin for ticks at the end of the day, including your head neck and any skin folds (armpits, groin and waist band) remove any ticks straight away • Check children’s head and neck area particularly their scalps • Make sure you do not take ticks home on your clothes • Check that animals do not bring ticks into your home in their fur The ongoing rise in the cases of Lyme disease in the UK is thought to be due to climate change leading to warmer winters.
