The season of goodwill is fast approaching but the idea of peace amongst all men has yet to reach the guys and girls running the country in Madrid – with slings and arrows being aimed at the (just) departed Rita Barbera. It seems the stain of corruption remains after the spirit has departed and certain members of Congress left the chamber rather than stay for a minute of silence and a moment of respect for a long-serving politician. The former mayor of Valencia was implicated in fraud and was quizzed at the Supreme Court two days earlier, but she has yet to be found guilty and surely even the those political types playing hard ball could have allowed a moment’s grace. Meanwhile back at RTN Towers the festive season really is upon us. Alice is busy deciding where to put the tree and a suitable colour scheme for the lights and paper chains. Danny has turned his attention to the office party…and more news about Santa’s busy diary have made the current issue. Every year charities and organisations put some real graft into organising Christmas fairs and markets to help raise some money for good causes, and give everyone the chance to have a good one. Now that really is the Christmas spirit.

Spreading Christmas cheer THE SINGERS of Spangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus are in good voice ahead of a busy December diary after being invited to sing at a number of festive events. by Jack Troughton The chorus has prepared a special Christmas programme and will help raise money for a number of good causes by performing in Los Alcázares, Balsicas, Cabo de Palos, Sucina and Torrevieja. “We love this time of year” said Musical Director, Wendy Grant “and we’ve been dusting off our Christmas repertoire since September. Chatters plans magical Christmas MAGICIAN BILLY Aviles is the special guest at the final Chatters meeting of 2016 at the Pasty Shack in Los Alcazares on Wednesday 14th December. Accompanied by a guitarist, Billy performing his magic replaces the customary guest speaker and there will also be a Christmas-themed quiz and picture quiz. APAH are appealing for a long-term foster home for a very needy cat. Heidi has been in APAH’s care since 2010. She is a mature, very affectionate cat with a lifelong medical condition. Live the real dream DARREN JAMES believes people moving to Spain must keep two things at the front of their minds; how to occupy themselves and the location of their new home. by Jack Troughton Chosen as one of the British Consulate’s ‘Our Local Ambassador’ team, he shares his own experiences to help other Brits make a success of the move to a new life in the sun. Darren, who lives in San Fulgencio, has lived here for 27 years after following his parents to Spain after they took early retirement. “I can be totally honest and say ‘would I do anything differently?’ and I would say ‘no’ – apart from not trusting people in business, but anyone can say that, it’s a general observation.” However, he has two important thoughts he wanted to pass on – keeping the grey mater working and the old “but important” phrase ‘location, location, location’. “Whatever age you are, and I came to Spain at 28, you must have something to occupy your mind, however small or large; even if you spend all day reading or writing, or doing crosswords and puzzles,” he said. “It stops you getting into the habit, which many people do, of spending your life in bars.” He said when everyone first arrived it was like being on an “extended holiday” and they indulged a little more after leaving the rat race – but anything longer risked getting into bad habits. “I always advise people to have something to do to occupy their minds; otherwise you can just vegetate,” added Darren. He said he enjoyed working with local radio stations and running quiz nights over the last 20 years. “The local community appreciates I help keep their brain cells going as well!” THINK And he said it was important to think ahead when choosing where to live and buying property in Spain. “You see places on the television programmes and many seem wonderful; living on a mountainside and enjoying beautiful views and it all seems wonderful, but think ahead 20 years,” Darren said. “You may be living alone or illness could kick in. What if there are no local shops, no Iceland or Consum, and no local bus and you cannot drive or your partner cannot drive?” He said it was always worth considering living within a community or on an urbanisation, adding: “I can think of two examples where if people did not have neighbours they would be dead. The first was when a person had an asthma attack and the second where another had a stroke and collapsed in a car park.” Darren said people needed to think of location in advance or have a strategy to move as they got older to prevent becoming isolated. “My over-riding advice is to really think about your location if you are going to put down roots for the rest of you days in Spain.” He said the television promoted the very best places. It is not always the paradise which is painted; the image of going to markets every day, eating tapas and drinking a glass of wine. That’s not the reality for many people.” And he believes integration did not mean eating paella every lunchtime or taking a siesta every afternoon. “It means you choose to come and live here and make sure you are 100% legal, obey the law and pay your taxes.” Darren (right) is pictured with British Ambassador Simon Manley at the launch of the local ambassador scheme in Alicante.

The tale of the missing Toblerone triangles made news earlier this month; manufacturers are spacing out the famous triangles to reduce the weight of the bar. Mars, who owns the Maltesers brand, says rising costs means it has to cut back. “Like all chocolate manufacturers, we have seen the cost of raw materials rise and, while we try to absorb these pressures as much as possible, sometimes we have to make the difficult decision to reduce the size of some of our products so our consumers can continue to enjoy an affordable treat,” a statement says. “Our focus is always on offering consumers our great tasting, high quality chocolate brands at the best value for money.”

Shock death of political veteran by jack troughton CONTROVERSIAL POLITICIAN Rita Barbera – the former mayor of Valencia and leading Spanish senator – has died two days after being quizzed over corruption involving alleged money laundering. The 68-year-old suffered a fatal heart attack on Wednesday morning in her hotel room in Madrid, just a short distance from Congress said doctors. Paramedics fought to save her life for over half an hour at the Real Villa Hotel after receiving an emergency call at around 7am. A member of the centre right Partido Popular over four decades, she was Mayor of Valencia for almost a quarter of a century and won an absolute majority in five consecutive elections between 1995 and 2011 and was a regional deputy from 1983 to 2015. Voted out last year, she took up a seat in the Senate. During her time as mayor, she vowed to make Spain’s third largest city a rival to Barcelona. The City of Arts and Sciences and the Norman Foster designed Congress Centre were built during the nineties – she also welcomed the Americas Cup and the European Grand Prix to Valencia. In recent times her position grew more controversial. In January, many of her team were accused of corruption but she denied any involvement in fraud. Under Operation Taula, 24 people were arrested in an investigation into PP activities in Valencia, Alicante and Castellon. The Valencia officials were accused of money laundering in relation to funding past election campaigns. All those held were linked to the PP, which remained the dominant political party until being ousted last May as voters veered to the left. Judges in the lower courts requested an investigation of the ex-mayor in April. However, Ms Barbera’s status as a senator gave her a level of immunity – meaning she could only be investigated by the Supreme Court.

And despite mounting pressure, she refused to give up her seat in the Senate even after PP leaders forced her to leave the party in September when the Supreme Court probe began – instead remaining as an independent and sitting with the ‘Grupo Mixto’. SUSPECT The attempt to distance itself from Ms Barbera came as the PP was already burdened with a number of high-profile corruption cases. On Monday she testified in the country’s highest court over fraud allegations in the party’s Valencia branch after being named as an official suspect. Following her death, Prime Minster Mariano Rajoy paid tribute to his colleague, saying she had “given everything for Valencia and the Partido Popular”. Isabel Bonig, who now leads the PP in Valencia, tweeted: “Sad. A political benchmark and the best mayor of Valencia. My condolences to family and friends of Rita Barbera.” And a string of party colleagues and her legal team slammed political rivals for presuming her guilt ahead of any trial, criticism that they said unfairly led to her being “depressed and on medication.” One leading member of Congress said Ms Barbera had fallen victim to a “witch hunt” in Spanish politics. Controversy even haunted her memory in Congress when political opponents expressed their condolences and a minute’s silence was staged - but several members from the Unidos Podemos coalition walked out. Inglesias said later it was “terrible” when someone died but added his deputies could not participate in a tribute to a politician whose “career is marked by corruption”. He said: “Maybe it would make more sense if we paid homage to victims of energy poverty” – referring to an 81-yearold pensioner who died in Catalonia after her home caught fire when she used candles because her power had been cut over non-payment of bills. At the state opening of congress last week, King Felipe VI spoke about ending corruption. The monarch said: “Corruption, which has outraged public opinion throughout our country, must be fought with firmness, and has to become a sad memory of a scourge that we have beaten and overcome.”

CLARO urges residents to act ORIHUELA INDEPENDENT political party CLARO has urged all British residents to act to preserve their rights in the “uncertainties” caused by the Brexit vote of the June referendum. by Jack Troughton The Orihuela Costa party held its 11th Annual General Meeting against the background of the vote to leave the European Union. And it believes a ‘hard Brexit’ has “endangered access” to free public health care and changes to pension levels could both have “severe consequences” for British citizens. Brits make up 50% of the population of Orihuela Costa and the meeting noted: “If large numbers were to leave Spain and return to the UK, the consequences for the local economy would be very serious.” The party urged all British residents to make sure they have official ‘residencia’ status and are registered on the local municipal register – the ‘padron’ – as advised by the British Consulate team. CLARO added in a statement: “Registering to vote and voting in the next municipal election in 2019 would be another way of safeguarding rights.”

The AGM heard notable successes over the past year included winning a commitment to construct the “long delayed” Orihuela Costa Emergency Services Centre within two years, the sealing of the burning waste tip at Campoamor to prevent the emission of toxic fumes, and the increase of polling stations from three to seven ahead of the next elections – making it easier to cast a vote. The party’s statement said: “It will be CLARO’s aim to continue to fulfil its role as the only political party dedicated to promoting and defending the rights of residents of Orihuela Costa. “The minority Popular Party government continues to deny Orihuela Costa adequate services and investments despite receiving come 60% of its revenue from the coast. “It is vital for CLARO to continue to campaign in favour of a fair and proportionate share of the municipal budget for Orihuela Costa; indispensible for assuring clean streets and maintenance of our so-called parks and gardens.” Targets for the coming year include a commitment to build a Cultural Centre and

library; a footbridge over the AP-7 motorway between Lomas de Cabo Roig and Cabo Roig; and protection for Cala Mosca, the last green area on the coast and threatened with

Protection for Roman ruin THE HISTORIC ‘Queen’s Baths’ in Calpe – a former Roman villa and salt works – has been declared an area of special cultural interest. by Jack Troughton The remains also include an early Christian church, possibly Visigoth or earlier, and all are now protected by law and are seen as an important part of the heritage of the Costa Blanca. Independent regional government the Generalitat Valenciana has made the official announcement and the site joins the medieval village on the Penon de Ifach in enjoying such protection; the salt lagoon Las Salinas has a level of protection for its rare flora. The Queen’s Baths have long been recognised as an area of special historic interest and over the last 15 years an annual summer archaeological dig has taken place. It gets its unusual name from legend that a local queen once bathed in the sea at the site. The valuable objects unearthed during the digs are taken to the MARC Museum in Alicante where they are catalogued; some are returned to the Calpe Museum in Calle Santisimo Cristo. Councillor Carole Saunders, a keen environmentalist, said: “The museum is where the story of the Queen’s Baths is told and it is open to visitors. There are some of the artefacts at the museum, along with some from the Penon. “This protection has been a long time coming and is a victory for conservationists – the site is on valuable flat land by the sea.”

Lufthansa strike chaos GERMAN CARRIER Lufthansa cancelled nearly 900 flights after losing its legal battle to halt a two-day pilots strike. by Edward Graham The industrial action ran over Wednesday and yesterday (Thursday) with the airline estimating some 100,000 passengers were affected. However, flights on Lufthansa’s other airlines – including Swiss, Austrian Airlines, and Brussels Airlines – were not affected and its budget arm Eurowings continued flying, however, a separate dispute involving cabin crew meant more than 60 flights by the low-cost subsidiary were lost on Tuesday. The pilots have taken industrial action following a long-running dispute over pay and their union, Vereinigung Cockpit, has organised 14 strikes since April 2014. On Tuesday, Lufthansa made two court challenges to halt the strike but saw a Frankfurt court refuse an application for an injunction and a Hesse state court rejected the airline’s appeal. Pay talks between the two sides broke down earlier this month and the employer complained the union “constantly” refused mediation but was calling for a 3.7% wage increase for 5,400 pilots dating back to 2010.

PROSECUTORS HAVE demanded a two-year jail sentence for Barcelona’s Brazilian soccer star Neymar over an alleged fraud committed in his signing for the Spanish club between 2011 and 2013. The Spanish High Court has been told the loser was a Brazilian investment company that owned a 40% stake in the player’s rights and maintains it received nothing following Neymar’s transfer from Santos de Sao Paulo in the summer of 2013. Barcelona also faces a 8.4 million Euros fine over breaches to FIFA over the 2011 contract that saw the player move to Spain – however, good news for the player, under Spanish law two-year prison sentences are usually suspended.

TWO COSTA Blanca residents have been honoured by the European Area of the Royal Air Force Associations at its Autumn Conference 2016, held on the island of Malta. by Jack Troughton Both members of the North Costa Blanca Branch of RAFA, Maggie Dennis, from Benitachell, received a European Area President’s Certificate, and Alan Gill, from Alcalali, was awarded the Dennis Emes Shield. Maggie has completed “outstanding service” for the branch. An associate member – she has not served with the RAF – she has undertaken two difficult areas; Treasurer and Honorary Welfare Officer. And European Area President, Air Marshall Philip Sturley said he was “delighted” to present the award to Maggie (pictured) in recognition of her “dedication”. Alan, who served in the RAF as an officer in Air Traffic Control, was awarded the Dennis Emes Shield in appreciated of his many year’s service as the Entertainments Officer for the North Costa Blanca Branch. The Shield is awarded annually at the conference to the ordinary or life member who is judged to have displayed the best all-round performance during the year. Unfortunately, Alan could not attend, so he was later presented with his award by Bob Hunt, Chairman of the European Area of the RAF Association.

A heady cocktail ALMERIA CELEBRATED World No Alcohol Day with public workshops spreading a new culture spreading the message about an alternative way of socialising. by Jack Troughton Organised by Mojacar Town Hall and the Provincial Government of Almeria, people were introduced to ‘healthy cocktails’. The Almería School of Hospitality and Tourism demonstrated attractive and appetizing cocktails – all alcohol free. And the workshop was attended by bar and restaurant owners, leisure and catering workers as well as private individuals. Teachers and lecturers also took part, forming a group of great importance with their access to young people, who are of special interest because of the alarming statistics on alcohol consumption amongst adolescents. Raquel Belmonte, Mojácar Councillor for Youth, who took part in the workshop, expressed the importance of this type of activity which combines the growing interest in healthy living, sports and food. She added that it was also an opportunity to demonstrate that alcohol is not necessary to have delicious drinks or to have fun with friends and colleagues.

Cosy nights THE MASONIC Home of Valencia Association has made a 2,000€ donation for the EMAUS home in Relleu where 24 young people work on a self-sufficiency programme. by Jack Troughton Bernard Wilson, association Secretary, (pictured left) made the presentation to charity Make A Smile recycling team leaders Barbara and Dennis Carter. The cash is to be used to buy warm pyjamas and bed linen for the home; which cannot afford to keep the heating on through long winter nights – it will also fund a Christmas treat. The youngsters, who have learning difficulties, grow vegetables, harvest olives from more than 1,000 trees, and gather around 750 eggs a week from a flock of around 220 chickens which are sold to the public.

Bus takes route PUBLIC TRANSPORT is being improved in Almeria with new stops on the ‘yellow’ bus route in a busy tourist area. Following requests from hoteliers at Mojacar Playa, a new stop has been opened at Marina de la Torre and more are planned. The line links Mojacar with the ‘blue flag’ beaches on the coast and runs to the neighbouring town of Garrucha; area popular with visitors. The new stop serves an area with five four-star hotels, a golf course, homes and urbanisations. It is part of the town hall’s plan to improve transport and make the roads safer and residents over the age of 65 and registered on the Padron – the official town census - get to travel free.

Cruz Azul helps cat control ANIMAL WELFARE charity Cruz Azul is back in the frontline helping keep feral cat colonies under control with its successful ‘Trap-Neuter-Return’ campaign in Murcia. by Jack Troughton Following action in Sucina and El Valle Golf, the charity has been working with animal lover Lorraine Oram in the ‘campo’ at San Pedro. Lorraine first turned to Cruz Azul for help when she found a little dog which had been stabbed and left to die. The charity paid for his sterilisation, microchip and vaccinations and he was adopted by the lady who cared for him following his life-saving surgery. Recently, she discovered a large cat colony near her home and paid to have three of them neutered. However, Lorraine could not afford to sterilise all thirteen cats and again contacted Cruz Azul. Lorraine knew the charity supported Trap-Neuter-Return, or TNR, campaigns and asked for help. Cruz Azul has initially pledged 300€ to sterilise as many cats that could be caught and has pledged its support until the whole colony has been neutered. “TNR is the most humane way of dealing with cat colonies” said charity Vice President Sue. “Cruz Azul is committed to helping people who want to do this rather than cats suffering horrible deaths from being poisoned - that is just barbaric and as TNR is proven the world over, we are happy to promote and support it.” Trap-Neuter-Return means the cats are humanely trapped in their colony, taken to a local vet to be sterilised, ear-clipped and vaccinated under anaesthetic, before being released back at the colony site. They used my photos and started making up stories, saying I had married a snake.” According to the newspapers, the Muslim fireman “spotted a snake with a ‘striking resemblance’ “to a girlfriend who died. The reports continued: “He now spends his life with the 10ft cobra believing it is his dead lover – following the Buddist idea that people can be reincarnated as animals.” The story went global after being picked up by a New York news agency and sold on. It was sold to the American agency by a British journalist working in the Far East. A spokesman for the agency said it had reported information it received and believed the supplier had carried out his own checks.

Star shines over La Siesta LA SIESTA Evangelical Church and Ladies Friendship Group invite everyone to follow the star – to the sparkling Christmas Fayre tomorrow (Saturday 26th December). From 10.30am, La Siesta Church will be packed with stalls selling bric-a-brac, jewellery, home baking, linen, books, hot dogs, and festive mulled wine along with tea and coffee. There will also be tombola, a raffle, and a brass band will entertain with Christmas music.

A pair of thieves were arrested by National Police in possession of 1,500€ of stolen clothing after a shop lifting spree in Elche city centre. The two Romanian nationals were stopped at a service station on the motorway just outside the city and the loot was found inside their vehicle. Officers could find no receipts for any of the clothing – but did discover aluminium foil, lock picks and a magnet, said to be used for disarming alarm sensors. The pair was arrested on suspicion of theft and taken into custody and it was later discovered the clothing had been stolen from various shops.

What a shock to many people that such a reality star as Trump is, could become the President of the United States and the most influential leader in the world. Yes, I agree he is an astute business man, but he is a wheeler dealer. Yes, it could be a good thing to have a very shrewd, successful business man in the White House. But the naivety of this man of worldwide politics and statesmanship is rather frightening. Will he make a good politician? Already there appear to be clashes and a lot of emotion and fear in selecting his team. The last time a wall was built, was between East and West Germany. Does he really think building a wall is going to solve any problems? This promise, along with his plans to deport millions of immigrants, is frightening. is having an effect on my company. Fortunately, because our policies and service are first class, most of our clients are happy to stay with us. I point out so many times that it is not worth changing to a cheaper product and not being covered in the same way as Liberty Seguros covers you. I can assure you that it is a false economy. On renewal of a policy, we contact every one of our clients, which is a far safer procedure than automatic renewals, where you are not in control of anything. This also gives the client the opportunity to update and upgrade their policy, as often works and changes to the property are carried out. For example, glass curtains, pool and surroundings, enclosing previously outside areas, extensions, updating kitchens and bathrooms, the addition of an outside kitchen, solar panels and parking arrangements. If you fail to amend your policy as the alterations and works are carried out, you may find yourself under insured, which could be a dangerous position to be in. On watching the news there is talk of changes regarding whip lash claims in the UK. The insurance companies have been waiting for over 8 years for the government to step in and change the regulations regarding compensation. Whiplash claims in particular have increased by over 50% in the last 10 years, costing approximately £ 1 billion per year. If brought in, the expected savings to policies is over £ 40 a year.Indeed the whole climate of a compensation culture is obviously having a knock on affect to the premium of policies. There are a number of stories

where drivers involved in accidents, do not claim for compensation. They are then being hounded years later by claim management companies who can be very persuasive, all using different tactics to encourage people to make a claim. In the UK, particularly for whiplash, you do not need to see a doctor for confirmation of injury for the claim. In one case study, the driver held firm and did not claim, but now wishes he had if just to stop the nuisance calls over the previous three years. The number of accidents in the UK has fallen by over 40% since 2000. However, the number of injury claims has risen by over 90 % over the same period. Nearly 80% of these claims relate to whiplash. In comparison, in France the same type of claims, over the same period were only 3% and I would imagine even less in Spain. Thank goodness the compensation culture has not reached Spain yet, and I hope it never does. In this country you need to get past the Guardia Civil first! Christmas is getting closer and closer. For those of you who will be travelling during this period, please remember your travel insurance. Don´t be tempted to go without it to save money – because you never know what could happen. It could end up costing you an enormous amount of money and the stress involved would be horrendous. Fine arts for culture vultures LOVERS OF decorative and fine art with a desire to learn more will be interested in a new group being launched on the Costa Blanca; the Marina Alta Fine Arts Society. by Jack Troughton

MAFAS is a local branch of the highly successful National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Society, which already boasts four branches in Spain; 325 branches in the UK; and more across Europe, Australia and New Zealand. And it offers the discussion of art-based subjects with expert speakers flown in to Spain to make detailed and fascinating presentations around a host of subjects. The society offers eight monthly illustrated presentations covering a wide range of topics; from Tutankhamun’s Treasures to Art Deco, Highgrove to Victoria and Albert, Picasso to Pop Art, Indian Fabrics to Faberge Eggs – and everything in between. In fact, there are some 4,200 topics for the MAFAS committee to choose from. The speakers are said to be world-class. At a recent ‘sample’ presentation, the lecturer had been a resident expert in the National Gallery in London for 10 years and was said to be “truly amazing, very knowledgeable, interesting and funny’. MAFAS will invite other specialists from such institutions as Tate Britain, Tate Modern, and the Antiques Roadshow. All speakers are appointed by the national association and they are invited to the Marina Alta to speak. RTN was told: “What a fantastic resource for the area; enhancing our understanding and knowledge of culture and heritage.” MAFAS is staging its opening meeting and presentation on Thursday 19th January at the Parador Hotel in Javea at 10.30am. Membership is 50€ a year and members receive four magazines over the 12 months with reviews of exhibitions, offers of courses and cultural trips organised by the UK society; Italy, China, India and Europe are on the current list. Programs keep crashing HI AUNTY: Could you please help? I have recently purchased a new Dell Optiplex 3010 desk top computer with Windows 8 operating system and the official Office Home & Student 2013 installed. All appeared to operate okay until I installed my existing Epson Stylus SX425W series printer. I downloaded the drivers for this printer/Windows 8 from the official Epson website, now when I open word the Word & Excel programs crash. Could this be caused by my printer? Any ideas or do I require a new printer? This printer is only 18 months old and works okay on my Vista laptop. Keep up the good work. Regards, Geoff. Aunty says: It appears you are not the only one with problems with this Epsom printer and Windows 8 crashing Office programmes. Many people complaining that the driver V6.72 for this printer for Windows 8 is not ideal. I assume you have installed the correct version of the driver for your PC – i.e. the correct 32 or 64 bit version for your version of W8? One workaround may be to use the Windows 7 driver, and make sure you install that version using the compatibility mode options: Download scanner driver and software for Windows 7 from the Epsom site a) Right-click on the driver executable/installer file. b) Click on Properties and select the Compatibility tab. c) Click the checkbox before Run this program in Compatibility mode for option and select Windows 7 in the list-down box. d) Then try installing the device driver via Run as administrator. Reply: Thanks Aunty for your help. The problem with my Epson SX425W printer drivers causing my official Office Home & Student 2013 to crash is the same with Windows 7 & 8. I have downloaded the latest 64bit drivers from the Epson website. I have also since spoken to a local IT company: they said the same as you. Epson have a major problem with this printer, they said avoid it like the plague. When I contacted Epsom they were not interested - I believe that I would have been better talking to the wall. Now looking for a new printer: it will not be an EPSON!

Scam?

HELLO AUNTY: Recently I have received a number of calls from people claiming to be at a Microsoft technical centre and that they had observed problems with my ‘Windows computer’ which they could resolve. One I let get as far as asking me to switch on the computer before I hung up but others I have always cut off before they got that far. This morning I decided to see if I could get any information from a caller and said that I was busy and would ring back later. The woman then told me that her number was 0044 141 6288227 and that she was in Glasgow. I understand that such calls are probably from scammers and am content to ignore them but others may be taken in and give away sensitive information. Therefore we should do what we can to stop the scammers. With thanks for your help in the past, Tony.

Aunty says: This same issue seems to come around every few months, and is resurfacing again, given the amount of people who have mentioned this in the last few weeks. Suffice to say it is a scam: Microsoft would NEVER contact you by telephone. Any ‘problems’ Microsoft would have would affect many people, and so a mass ‘Patch’ would be issues to Windows. They would not call each individual up to talk them through the process. These scammers simply want to get you to install some software that will allow them access to your PC: not a good idea.

Peace celebrated at anniversary Meet Mack

FRIENDS OF the Vivace Classical Choir will travel from across the UK to join the group for its 10th anniversary concert and a performance of ‘The Armed Man’ – a mass for peace. Composer Sir Karl Jenkins’ music will be enriched by the addition of musicians from the Symphonic Band of the Union Musical of San Miguel de Salinas; the instrumentalists joining the choir’s regular accompanist, pianist David Ward Campbell. Vivace’s Musical Director Tom Pargeter plays trombone with the band and is delighted the choir has forged a link with the musicians. He believes the inspiring work is a fitting climax to the Vivace Classical choir’s special year. Sir Karl (pictured) composed the mass for the millennium, it was dedicated to the victims of the war then going on in Kosovo, and this enthralling modern work is a mass for universal peace - a dramatic representation of the preparations, actions, consequences and recovery stages of any war. Sadly, it is as relevant today as it was 16 years ago. The first performance is on Friday 2nd December at 8.00pm in the Casa de Cultura in San Miguel. It will be followed by a special charity performance on Saturday 3rd December at 8.30pm in the wonderful Church of Santas Justa and Rufina in Orihuela. STUDIO32 INTRODUCES its next production, the musical ‘Mack and Mabel’, at an Open Day on Wednesday 7th December at 4pm in Casa Ventura, San Luis. It is an opportunity to get involved with this friendly and talented group and meet the director, musical director, company members and production team; the show is set for production in May and June next year. The musical tells the story of silent movie making and the relationship between Hollywood director Mark Sennett and his greatest star, Mabel Normand. The story is about Mabel entering the world of film making and the black and white world of such craziness as the Keystone Cops. Michael Ball and Rebecca La Chance (pictured) starred in a UK version. Meanwhile, Studio32 is preparing to take the classic ‘A Christmas Carol’ to the stage of the Cardenal Belluga Theatre in San Fulgencio. The late ´King of Pop´ has a son called Prince! Michael Jackson’s eldest child, Prince 19, has rarely spoken about anything; however, he did open up to The Los Angeles Times recently saying that his father once gave him some rather pessimistic advice that he should “Trust no one!” Prince explained that Michael said to him “a lot of people are motivated by themselves; don’t trust someone just because it sounds like a good idea … do your research!” On the business of wearing masks Prince said “the reason we wore masks was he wanted us to have our own life without him.” Clever! Prince said how he and his sister ´Paris´ and brother ´Blanket´ always enjoyed going out without their dad as no-one knew who they were. He recalls “I remember being in Disneyland with dad and there were all these fans waving and taking pictures of me, I thought it was normal, so I waved back.” A worrying fact is that there’s talk of the siblings starring in a reality show, a way we now know of becoming the president of the United States! AAAHHHH!

Being stranded on a deserted island to me means foraging for food and living the life of a hermit! Not so with the latest US of A reality show called ´Below Deck´ that stars, and I use the word in its most loose form, Kate Chastain. I´ll let her take up the story. She told the New York Post “We were on our way down to Turks and Caicos, the captain, his friend and I, and the captain wanted to cut corners and get there quickly but he hit a coral reef and we were shipwrecked for three days on a desert island. We had two boxes of potato chips and luckily, four cases of Domaine Ott Rosé wine, so actually it was like a mini-vacation. “Kate then added “I went down to salvage my clothes, but I had no idea where I thought I was going!” To the TV station to cancel the show hopefully!

We´re all aware that when celebs appear on chat shows it’s pretty much mapped out. Tom Cruise appeared on the Jimmy Kimmel Show recently and broke all of those rules when he suddenly drifted off into a speech about mega movie Top Gun. He said how he pretended he was not sure about taking the “Maverick” Mitchell role as he wanted to drag out the process and have some fun flying an F-14 jet. Tom was allotted a guy called Bozo as his instructor and said “As Bozo was going through the check sheet, I noticed the emergency lights were on and we´re about to take off, and I said ‘Bozo, these lights! there’s a lot of red lights! and he’s like, ‘Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah,’ and he starts turning them off! Then he said “They don’t call me Bozo for nothing.” Bozo the Dozo … No!

Whoopi Goldberg has produced some very successful work down the years, but will she succeed with her latest adventure … Ugly Sweaters! Whoopi told The New York Times “They make me happy, I’ve worn them for many years and I thought about all the things I’d love to see on a sweater,” and has she come up with some pretty ugly stuff! Like an octopus becoming a Menorah and black and white Santa Clauses on the verge of kissing. The sweaters are made from wool, alpaca, cashmere and cotton and cost $139 each! Whoopi feels her timing is good saying “You can start right after Thanksgiving, wear them all the way through Hanukkah and New Year’s, then you’re done for another 12 months until it rolls around again!” The sweaters went on sale at Lord & Taylor and Hudson’s Bay on Nov 1. WHOOPEE!

The Exorcist frightened the life out of most of us at various parts of the movie … the priest at the bottom of the stairs about to walk up will remain in my mind’s eye for ever and a day. How about something else to interfere with your sleep pattern? The film´s director William Friedkin has now said that psychiatrists are much more open to the possibility of demonic possession after he was permitted to film a real life exorcism ... oh my good god! … An article about the event appeared in Vanity Fair explaining how he was permitted to film the exorcism of Rosa, a woman in her late 30s living in Rome, and afterwards the director of the New York State Psychiatric Institute saw the film he accepted that exorcism was not connected to the condition of epilepsy. Somebody call the priest immediately!

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

True passives Today’s article is about the passive voice in Spanish, how it is formed, how it is used and related matters. We call a sentence passive (as opposed to “active”) when it is inverted to make the object work as the subject, for example when I change “Hemingway wrote the book” to “The book was written by Hemingway”. We have seen in the two previous articles how common this form is in English and how the Spanish have more than one way to deal the omission of the subject apart from the straightforward passive form.

However, this sentence inversion so beloved of the English does also exist in Spanish and this is how it works. Let’s look at the English examples above first, so that you can see the same process in both languages. “Hemingway wrote the book” – in grammatical terms we can say that “Hemingway” is the “subject” of the sentence, “the book” is the “object” of the sentence and “wrote” is the verb. It is this verb “wrote” that we have to focus on. “Wrote” is the past tense of the verb “to write”. To make the sentence passive, we have to take another verb – “to be” and put it into the same tense – “was”. Then we take the main verb “to write” and put it into the form we call the “past participle” – “written”. So, instead of “wrote” we now have “was written”. Of course in English we do this completely automatically, but we need to realize exactly what we do, to do the same in Spanish. Here goes … We start with the sentence in “active” form: “Hemingway escribió el libro” Then we put the object into the position of the subject: “El libro ….. Then we look at the tense of the verb, and see that it is in the past simple or preterite tense (the “done and dusted” tense for readers of my former articles!) Now we take the verb SER and put it into this tense - fue. “El libro fue …. Next, we take the main verb “escribir” and put it into its past participle form – escrito (“written”). “El libro fue escrito ….” Some passive sentences stop there and omit the original subject (e.g. “My bag was stolen”). However, this particular sentence requires the subject to make it complete. In English we use the word “by” in Spanish we use “por”. “El libro fue escrito por Hemingway” Da-dah!!! No problems there then! As you can well imagine, there are just a few other details to bear in mind. An important one is that the whole verb (ser + participle) has to agree in gender and number with the “new” subject. Like this: “Los libros fueron escritos por Hemingway”. “La obra fue escrita por Shakespeare” “Las obras fueron escritas por Shakespeare”. Also, of course, the tense can be different: “La escuela será construida el año que viene”. (The school will be built next year) “He sido elegida reina de las fiestas”. (I’ve been chosen as the festival queen). Don’t ask me where that last example came from! Now, I suggest we all go and make ourselves a cup of tea and calm down from the excitement.

We got Lady Sadie from K9Club Animal Rescue Centre. Since she arrived I’ve become a multi tasking skivvy. I’m a doorman, a doormat, a scratching pole, a pillow & a waiter in both senses, serving her deluxe gourmet grub (which pro rata costs 3 times the amount of our humble fare) & waiting for her to come home at all hours – I never had daughters but now I know what it’s like to be a downbeat drudge. However when HRH Sadie deigns to sit on my lap I feel like - SMERSH’s International Crime Mastermind & 007’s nemesis – Ernst Stavro Blofeld. Last time we had a dog it was as foster parents to a friend’s hound, a mixed breed collie, look his mother’s morales are no business of yours. His name is Fonz because he’s so coool – not in a husky sled pulling way – in a Happy Days way. Last winter we took him for a walk along La Mata beach. It was March and the wind was howling & screaming like a Jess Glynne / Nicki Minaj duet. Suddenly a cop on a mountain bike (which is difficult to take seriously – hardly the Sweeny) collared us. Now I say cop – this one looked like he was eagerly anticipating his 16th birthday – I’ve got a verruca older than this custodian of the law. Apparently we’d committed the heinous crime of perro walking on a deserted winter beach during a sandstorm. We were the only souls daft enough to be on the beach – apart from a Nordic chap in budgie smugglers taking a dip – which did prompt the Current & Final Mrs Ashley to remark “Hum! must get some button mushrooms for tonight’s casserole.” Ooh-er missus, she can be snippy at times. Italian veggie cottage pie An Italian twist on an English classic, with sundried tomato, spinach and aubergine, this veggie pie makes a super budget supper Ingredients 4 tbsp olive oil 2 aubergines, cut into chunks 2 large garlic cloves, crushed 16 sundried tomatoes, roughly chopped, plus 1 tbsp of their oil 2 tsp dried oregano 400g spinach, washed 50g plain flour 400ml milk 125g cheddar, grated, plus extra to top 800g ready-made mashed potato (fresh not frozen) Method Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Heat 1 tbsp of the oil in a large, lidded frying pan or flameproof casserole dish. Cook the aubergine, in two batches, over a high heat for

4-5 mins until golden, adding extra oil as you need to. Return all the aubergine to the pan with the garlic, tomatoes and 1 1/2 tsp oregano and cook for 1 min. Stir in the spinach, put the lid on the pan and leave for a few mins to wilt. Add the flour and stir through until combined. Pour in the milk, stir gently and bring to the boil. Bubble for a few mins, then stir in the cheese and season. Cook until the cheese has melted and the sauce has thickened. Mix the mash with the remaining oregano and spread over the filling. Scatter over a little more grated cheese and bake for 10-15 mins until golden.

They are inviting all local residents to visit their nearest optician during this period to take advantage of the free eye tests and make sure that eyes are healthy and that their vision is good. Alfaz fantasy football league After what felt like an eternity,the Premier League & the Alfaz Fantasy Football League was back in action last Weekend.The 9 Premier League games supplied the Fantasy with 20 goals,5 clean sheets,41 yellow cards and 2 red ones which was Sunderland’s Djilobodji (it’s easy for you to say) and Hammer Winston Reid,both off for 2nd yellows.With it getting near Christmas the Referees were in a giving mood by awarding 5 penalties of which 4 were scored and 1 missed. Referee Mike Dean awarded his 9th penalty in his 10 th game in charge this Season which I think is about right.Some Referees wouldn’t award a penalty if somebody shot somebody in the Penalty area. Our young Junior Managers Ant & Brad after 6 weeks at the top of the Fantasy League they have finally been removed by Andrew’s team Big Tymers mind you there is only 1 point in it.Reece;s Wether 2 Winners have slipped down to 3rd while Wyn;s team Wyndham’s All Stars are enjoying a good run of form thanks to his Chelsea Players who helped Him climb up 10 places to 4th.Down at the other end of the Table things are looking bleak for Kevin’s El Portet Elite as they are now 53 points adrift of Jo Jo Wants a Dog. A positive experience THE BRITISH are passionate about queues, according to research from Onepoll.com: I passionately hate them.

And so it is with a sinking feeling that I find myself in yet another claustrophobic traffic jam. But hang on a minute, it’s a much more positive experience because I’m driving a Toyota Yaris Hybrid and it thrives in such situations. In fact it is pos-

sible to travel up to two miles at 30mph on its electric motor, thus conserving expensive petrol. The Yaris Hybrid is a joy because, as long as the driver is light with the right foot and the motor is sufficiently charged, it will automatically crawl along in EV (electric vehicle) mode. If it doesn’t then there is an EV switch, awkwardly placed near the handbrake. Either way, progress is similar to the sound and pace of a milk float. Woe betide the impatient motorist because apply too much pressure on the accelerator and it’ll start guzzling fuel. There’s a similar temptation when other irritated motorists are forced to form an orderly queue behind as the driver nurses the little hybrid on its way. But when the traffic is slow moving it works well. Normal driving results in the engine charging the motor back up in time to be used in another queue. I would be happier if this hybrid technology was coupled to a more efficient diesel engine as it consumes too much petrol for my liking, really only allowing around 350 miles of travel on a full tank. The tank is 36 litres or 7.9 gallons (compared to 42 litres in a standard Yaris, to make room for the hybrid battery) and during my test it has averaged

44mpg. This makes it much more appropriate for pottering around town rather than motorway munching. It does have an excellent cruise control that can be used at speeds of 26mph and above even with EV mode. It can be set at 30mph and no matter whether travelling downhill or up it will stick rigidly to this speed, which is particularly helpful when a speed camera is present. A unique interior is made all the more so by what appears to be a light turquoise woodchip wallpaper effect on the dashboard and door inserts, which you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. It is actually a fabric but at a quick glance looks very much like wallpaper. Equipped with a good level of features the Yaris Hybrid gets all round electric windows, air conditioning, Sat-Nav and a CD player. Every Two Days a Worker Dies in a Traffic Related Incident In the latest figures released this week, based on investigations carried out by the Instituto Nacional de Seguridad e Higiene en el Trabajo (INSHT), a worker dies in a traffic related incident every two days. The report reveals that in 2015 there were 58,842 industrial accidents reported, of which 43,202 were during the time travelling to and from work, the equivalent of 73.4% of the total, which breaks down to 161 incidents every day. The total number in Spain is not as high as other European countries, but still reflects a significant number of workers being left incapacitated or suffering fatal injuries. The amount of traffic increases during the journey to and from work, thus increasing the risk of a minor incident by around 11%, a serious incident by 22.2%, and the risk of being involved in a fatal incident increases by 27.5% during these times. However, in addition to the increase in traffic, one of the biggest problems has been suggested

as being complacency, as drivers get used to the same routes, the same levels of traffic and even seeing the same vehicles on the roads at times, it is easy to be lulled into a false sense of security and not be as observant as on a drive involving a new or unusual route or area. The highest group at risk, according to the profile drawn from the catalogue of incidents, is that the highest number of fatalities have involved a male (97.2%) who is the driver (88.6%), with an average age of just over 45 years old. The average of those involved in all incidents, including those without a fatal outcome, is just over 48 years of age. The most important advice is always be alert, allow extra time for your journey when it is busy, maintain a safe distance and appropriate speed at all times and try to avoid becoming complacent, which is so easy to do.
