Who do voodoo? Friday, September 2 - Thursday, September 8 2016

HUMAN REMAINS discovered in the waters off the Penon de Ifach at Calpe could have been used in the secret voodoo ceremonies of ‘Santeria’. by jack troughton

The first skeletal remains were discovered on Saturday wrapped in a sheet together with a doll, a wooden pole, a bowl, feathers, laurel leaves, twigs with people’s names written on them, and a bottle of yellow-coloured liquid. Initial tests show the skeleton had been buried in earth for 30 to 40 years and forensics reveal the bundle of remains had only been in the sea between 48 and 72 hours before being found by divers. And it is understood a total of five bundles containing similar items, believed to be used in witchcraft, together with animal bones and a knife, have now been recovered from the sea by a specialist diving team of the Guardia Civil, helped by local diving clubs. Santeria is a fusion of the old rituals of tribal Africa and Catholicism. It evolved after native Africans were enslaved and taken to the Caribbean under the old Spanish Empire and forced into Christianity but retained some of their former beliefs. The Guardia Civil in Alicante said this week “the main hypothesis” was the skeleton had been used in a “clandestine ritual of Santeria” it was conducting inquiries with “great caution”. The Penon de Ifach is the huge limestone rock rising from the sea adjacent to Calpe’s harbour. A footpath leads round from the harbour to the eastern tip of the natural edifice – it is a site popular with people wanting to scatter the ashes of loved ones. Read more on page 5

WORDS LIKE ‘voodoo’ and ‘witchcraft’ certainly grabbed the attention of the crew in RTN Towers and the guys were spellbound as events at Calpe were retold – add allegations of grave robbing and even the kettle forgot to whistle.

were recovered from the seabed, all bundled up in sheets and accompanied by what officers of the law might describe as ‘the paraphernalia’ of voodoo. Life as a member of Her Majesty’s Press is never dull and the discovery of the dark arts at play is something of a show-stopper. It sparked a quick history lesson and investigation of the cult of ‘Santeria’; a bit of an eye-opener. And a big thumbs up to the forces of law and order down in the south of RTN-land. Officers were called to investigate allegations of animal cruelty and the mistreatment of five dogs…such was the harrowing screams of the animals they took immediate action. Spain does not enjoy the best reputation for animal rights but things are changing and the swift action of the authorities in this case illustrates four-legged friends look destined for a better deal.

Vicious mugging by Rhiannan Bell A resident of Torrevieja was the victim of a brutal assault as her handbag containing documents and 21.00â‚Ź was snatched. The attack took place on Monday afternoon as the 57-year-old woman was entering the lift of her apartment block - it is believed the bandit followed her home. The attacker, believed to be in his 30s, followed her into the lift, grabbed her neck with one hand and then proceeded to hit her several times in the face. And after snatching her bag the thief ran off leaving the traumatised victim with a broken nose. Local Police, Guardia Civil and medics rushed to the scene after receiving several calls from local residents. The injured woman was taken to Torrevieja Hospital where she was treated for a complex fracture of the nose. The Guardia Civil is now reviewing security camera footage of the area. Detectives believe the suspect could have followed the woman that morning and seen her collect an envelope containing 200â‚Ź from the main post office in Torrevieja. Officers are also looking into the possibility that criminal is a member of a gang known to carry out violent robberies in tourist areas.

Damaged Cars

A falling ledge destroyed several cars and gave residents in Orihuela a tremendous scare last Friday night but damaged parekd cars. A few metres of cornice landed on several cars that were parked along the street below - police forced to cordon off the road as the remains of the ledge was removed and the area made safe. The street is normally busy with pedestrians but by fortunately quiet at 10pm when the incident took place.

New rules for benefit claims

PEOPLE HEADING for the Spanish sun will only be able to receive Housing Benefit over four weeks when they are out of the country – a cut from the previous 13 weeks they could have their rent paid. by Jack Troughton The new rules also affect those claiming Pension Credit also face a reduction in the time they can continue to receive payments whilst abroad; again from 13 to four weeks. The changes are aimed at saving taxpayers’ cash – but still allow people claiming benefits to enjoy a holiday abroad. Housing Benefit currently stands at £25 billion a year and has been increasing for many years but a range of reforms are intended to control spending. Government changes came into force at the end of July and are designed to prevent claimants taking long drawn-out trips outside Great Britain while receiving help with their rent. It brings Housing Benefit into line with Jobseeker’s Allowance and other ‘working age’ benefits; which already had stricter limits. FAIR And Minister for Welfare Delivery Caroline Nokes said: “It is important that the benefits system is fair to those who need it and those who pay for it. “It is not right that people could be abroad for over three months and still expect the taxpayer to pay their rent back home.” She added: “These new rules mean that people can still enjoy holidays like everyone else, but will insure that the system isn’t abused.” Further information is available from local benefit offices. Those permanently resident overseas remain unable to claim income-related benefits for any period of time; including Housing Benefit, Pension Credit, or Universal Credit. In an ongoing campaign to fight benefit fraud in Spain, if anyone suspects people of breaking the law, they are asked to call the Benefit Fraud Hotline on 900 554 440, calls are free and confidential or report it online at www.gov.uk/report-benefit-fraud.

A footpath leads round from the harbour to the eastern tip of the natural edifice – it is a site popular with people wanting to scatter the ashes of loved ones. tained rubbish but was “stunned” to find it was a skeleton with “a bucketful of strange objects”. An initial examination by experts at Villajoyosa revealed the human bones had buried for some time – taking on the characteristic brown colour of earth. However, there were no signs of violence, leaving characteristic holes, cuts or fractures. The remains were later sent to the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Alicante for further study – and bones that appeared to be from animals are also being examined by scientists. Investigations have turned to cemeteries across the area to find if graves have been disturbed and remains stolen from them. In 2013, the Guardia Civil broke up a sect in Tenerife using bones stolen from ‘niches’ in Spanish cemeteries to ‘celebrate’ the rituals of Santeria. According to experts on Santeria, during the secret rituals, new members undergo an initiation where they are superficially cut with machetes; their blood collected in bowls and poured over an altar decorated with animal heads, bones, flowers and other items. It was said the followers also sacrifice animals, drink alcohol, and even smoke cigars to induce a state of euphoria.

SPECULATION Speculation over the remains and the voodoo link has become the main topic of conversation in Calpe as the investigation continues. “This is totally bizarre,” said one resident. “It is certainly not what you expect in a seaside resort in the 21st Century.” A diver from the Las Bassetes diving school based nearby on the Benissa coast made the first gruesome discovery off Roca Plana. He first thought the knotted sheet con-

Stealing a warm embrace

PENSIONERS ARE warned to be on their guard for ‘friendly robbers’ targeting the elderly to steal valuables. by Rhiannan Bell The Local Police of Orihuela has posted the advice on its Facebook page about the method of theft known as “loving” or as the “warm embrace”. This type of theft affects mainly the elderly, both men and women, who are especially vulnerable because of age, physical condition or other factors. And police say these types of thefts have increased dramatically in recent months. The tactic used often involves one or two people, often women, who ask the victim for directions of some kind and once the information has been given they show their gratitude by embracing the innocent victim. But they cruelly take advantage of the drama to remove watches and other jewellery items. Members of the public are warned to avoid flaunting jewellery or other valuables, not to talk to strangers and be wary of people who show a sudden interest in them or try to encourage them to move to a more secluded area. Victims are asked to immediately report any such crimes to the police so that they can keep a track

of the locations where these robberies are taking

place and step up surveillance.

Hit & Run The emergency services were called to a hit-and-run incident early on Monday morning in the Las Torres de Cotillas area of Murcia where a young man had been injured.. The car, which was later reported to have been a silver Citroen failed to stop but part of its front grille was found at the scene. The injured man had been thrown to the side of the road and was found unconscious and bleeding from a large head wound. He was taken to the Hospital de la Arrixaca with multiple injuries.

Just a pussycat... FEROCIOUS LION ‘microleo attenboroughi’ lived in treetops 18 million years ago but was around the size of a domestic kitten. by Jack Troughton Fossils of the extinct ‘micro’ lion were found in Australia and it was named after the veteran British naturalist because of his dedicated work promoting the famous site where it was discovered. Weighing in at around 600g – 21.2 ounces – it prowled around the lush rainforest hunting insects, lizards, frogs and birds. The remains were discovered in the Riversleigh World Heritage Area in remote North Queensland by palaeontologists in July. It belongs to an extinct family of marsupial lion – including a younger relative, the more famous and genuinely lion-sized Thylacoleo carniflex. However, despite 40 years of research in the fossil-strewn area and the many thousands of fossils and bones discovered, it is the only example of microleo attenboroughi. Anna Gillespie, palaeontologist at Sydney’s University of New South Wales, said: “It’s around the size of a grey squirrel...maybe a little bit bigger than kitten-sized. “It was probably living and hunting in the treetops and probably hunting small insects and small invertebrates like lizards, frogs and birds.” And she said it had teeth including “an elongate, lethally sharp, knife-like, premolar” in front of basined molar – a feature of the carnivorous marsupials in the family.

Arrested on the beaches by Jack Troughton ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS who swam to shore at Benitachell were arrested by officers of the Guardia Civil and local police on Tuesday morning – as the authorities attempt to seal off the Alicante coastline. The nine abandoned their frail and unpowered seven metre long boat to its fate as they attempted to move inland from Cala Moraig but were arrested. And at Torrevieja earlier the same morning an even smaller boat landed at la Curva del Palangre – four adults, believed to be of North African origin, managed to evade capture after making landfall but four youngsters from the four metre boat were held. In total, five boats have been intercepted off the Alicante coastline since 31st July when 22 people, including seven children, in two boats were assisted ashore; and on 16th August eight migrants were rescued off Cabo de las Huertos from an unpowered boat. The nine adults held at Benitachell on the beach below the

Cumbre del Sol urbanisation, all were in good health after swimming ashore from their drifting craft. The maritime rescue boat ‘Luig Llorenca’ from Javea took the boat – known as a ‘patera’ in Spain – in tow back to its home port. Onboard the blue-coloured vessel were bottle of water, life jackets and wet clothing. The rescue boat also searched the immediate area in an attempt to find any other immigrants in the water. SHORE Police and Guardia officers sealed off the area and the cliffs and bays surrounding the beach were combed to see if other immigrants had made it ashore. An eye witness told RTN: “The boat was abandoned just off the beach and the nine swam ashore – the alarm was raised as they landed. “The Guardia and police sealed off the area and the road down to the beach as they looked to see if anyone else made it to land in this part of the coast.” The Torrevieja landing was between the Los Locos and El Cura beaches under the cover of darkness. The wooden boat was powered by a tiny 15 horsepower outboard. However, it was the sound of the engine that alerted the

police at around 4.15am. The four youngsters believed to be aged between 11 and 17 were intercepted and treated at the scene before being taken to hospital for tests – but appeared to be healthy. The adults vanished into the night. Tuesday was a busy morning at sea with immigrants also being rescued at sea off Murcia and Almeria. The maritime rescue service took 11 men of Algerian and Moroccan origin into Almeria after finding them in a boat 44km off the coast; 16 people were trying to reach the Murcia coast when they were intercepted by a Guardia Civil cutter and another seven were held after landing.

Cycle is king PEDAL POWER rules the roads of the Costa Blanca as the last stages of Vuelta 2016 – the Tour of Spain – reaches its exciting final moments with Britain’s Chris Froome well-placed for a chance at the title. by Jack Troughton The race started in Northern Spain on 20th August and ends three weeks later on Sunday 11h September in Madrid after 21 stages across the country. And for the first time there is an individual time trial. Stage 19 takes riders from Javea to Calpe next Friday, riders having to race 37km against the clock as they travel through Benitachell. Teulada and Moraira. On Saturday (10th September) it is the penultimate stage 20, when the entire field faces a gruelling climb from Benidorm to Alto de Aitana and 193.2km in the saddle. The following day is a 102km ride from Las Rozas into the capital and the finishing line. Organisers have appealed for motorists to be patient with road closures and diversions in place during Friday in the Marina Alta and on Sunday in the Marina Baixa. During the time trial, competitors set off at one minute intervals and the coastal route is expected to be packed with spectators, again increasing traffic in the area. Calpe roads will be closed between Las Bassetes on the border with Benissa and the town´s Maviro roundabout

between 11am and 6pm. And Calpe Town Hall is looking for volunteer marshals to help out the Civil Protecion on Friday – they are promised an excellent view of the action and a free souvenir t-shirt. Pictured is the dramatic finish at Benitachell 12 months ago, when the race was again a welcome visitor to the area.

Huge plantation raided GUARDIA CIVIL have seized 20,000 marijuana plants in a raid at farm in Andalucia – the largest plantation discovered in recent years. A strong smell of the crop raised suspicions and police were called to the Seville farm where the drugs were growing in two greenhouses. When officers reached the farm in Las Cabezas de San Juan they found the plants in varying stages of cultivation in the greenhouses which were also being used as a drying area for the buds. Three men were arrested; the 49-year-old farm owner, a Seville man aged 45, and 27-year-old, alleged to be responsible for the illicit operation.

Watching out by Jack Troughton NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH in Spain – the volunteer group helping combat crime – is holding its Annual General Meeting on Saturday 10th September in Torrevieja.

The organisation successfully runs schemes throughout the world and it has become a valuable weapon in the fight against crime in Spain; people joining local branches along the Costas helping cut crime in their community. The AGM will hear of a number of proposed changes to the scheme which it is hoped will further increase the impact of Neighbourhood Watch, called Vecinos Cooperando in Spain, on the bad guys. A spokesman told RTN: “We are a totally voluntary organisation and we watch our neighbourhoods for the benefit and protection of all. “This meeting will raise a number of proposed changes which will make your safety, security, and that of your neighbours and friends easier to achieve. It would be good to see as many members as possible so the discussions reflect diverse opinions.” The meeting is taking place at The Marina club, Puerto Deportivo Marino International, Torrevieja, with registration open from 10.30am. Forest restoration promised

www.roundtownnews.com

The Provincial Council of Alicante is collaborating with Guardamar and Redován Town Halls to try to restore the mountain forests. by Rhiannan Bell The Sierra de Redován and Castell de Guardamar del Segura are two of three areas severely affected by drought and the plague of Tomicus beetles. Both respective Town Halls will athird of a 100,000€ fund put aside for the project to help these struggling zones. Provincial Deputy Javier Sendra said the council was making a big effort to restore and reforest the land to make it environmentally sustainable. He added it was aware of the problems caused by plagues of insects in the summer in forests already at risk of drought - and wants to collaborate to mitigate this situation and conserve the province’s forests. Work which include the removal of dry and dead trees containing the beetle, stripping or shredding of live infested trees and installing traps and bait which will hopefully allow the trees to be able to thrive. Restoration of native vegetation is also planned for the landscape. The Tomicus beetle is black or dark brown, 3.5 to 4.8mm long, with a cylindrical body. It breeds in recently dead or dying trees, and predominantly windblown trees lying on the ground. The adults feed through the autumn and winter on the strong shoots of healthy young trees, and although this does not kill the tree, it causes damage and stunts the growth, reducing the economic value of the timber.

Dogs Rescued FIVE MISTREATED dogs have been rescued and their 62-year-old owner arrested by police after complaints from concerned neighbours. by Rhiannan Bell The Guardia Civil mounted a surveillance operation to monitor alleged animal cruelty and have since charged the women with offences of animal abuse and cruelty. During one of the surveillance periods in Las Ramos, Murcia, officers heard shrieks and groans from dogs coming from inside the house. They were so appalled by the severity of the sounds, officers took steps to intervene as swiftly as possible - requesting immediate help from the Murcia Association of Animal Rescue (AMRA). AMRA promptly arrived at the house and, with support from veterinarians, managed to retrieve and give treatment to the suffering animals. During the search of the house, officers the dogs of various breeds and sizes in very poor sanitary condition and some with sores and welts. And they discovered many rooms were piled high with festering rubbish. The whole place was riddled with cockroaches, ticks and fleas.

Ready for firework night

La Tomatina 2016 by Caroline Tyszka THE WORLD famous La Tomatina, Spain’s annual tomato fight took place this week with tickets being completely sold out. Now in its 71st year 20,000 people voluntarily allowed themselves to be

pelted with over 330,00 pounds of tomatoes which had been transported to the town of Buñol in Valencia in readiness for the event. Held on the last Wednesday in August, the tradition of the Tomatina dates back to 1945 where an actual fight broke out involving people throwing vegetables and fruit at each other. The event has grown each year, become

more organised, and features in Spain’s official tourist guide. As shopkeepers and residents covered their buildings with sheets of plastic to keep out the mess, crowds ran down the narrow streets wearing goggles and old clothes into the tomato storm. Afterwards cleaning teams armed with hoses moved in to wash down both people and the street.

ALL SYSTEMS are go as Javea prepares for its spectacular firework display to mark the grand finale of the Our Lady of Loreto fiestas next Thursday night. At midnight experts in pyrotechnics get to light the blue touch paper and delight thousands of people gathered in Javea Port and along surrounding beaches to ready for the noisy treat. For three years a local law has banned the use of the sea wall to set off the fireworks; it is within 500 metres of a wooded area, the foothills of Cap San Antonio. Instead the display is mounted on 45 square metre platforms offshore and this year the pontoons have been specially strengthened – tests show they make an ideal base for the fun and they will be anchored two days before the display.

Buying or selling property in Spain in a foreign currency Dear lawyer, I’m British and I am interested in buying a property on the Costa Blanca, in either Denia, Javea and Moraira.. The owners of one of the villas we are interested in making an offer on, who are a British couple, want to return to the UK. We asked the agent and he told us that we must pay the price in Euros, because the property is in Spain and we cannot pay in Pounds Sterling, despite being the buyer and seller in agreement. Is this correct? Thanks for your reply. Dear reader, thank you for your consultation. We cannot agree with the information that has been given to you by the agent. It is perfectly possible to buy a Spanish property in another foreign currency other than in Euros. It is not only possible, but sometimes can be very beneficial to all the parties. For example, if you as a buyer have your money in pounds sterling in the UK, and the seller wants to sell his property in Spain to return to the UK, it is clear that for both of you performing the operation in Pounds could be the most appropriate, in order to avoid possible fluctuations and variations in the currency exchange rate between the euro - Pounds Sterling, and uncertainties that could affect the value of the pound and the euro as the Brexit, etc. It is true that although the entire operation is carried out in a foreign currency, in your case in sterling, the purchase title deed to be signed before a notary must state the price in Euros for the taxes payable shall be calculated, etc., Although it would be stated that the payments had been made in pounds. It is also important to agree the exchange rate between Euros and Pounds, as some retention of part of the price could be needed, for the payment of debts, or 3% retention as payment on account of the capital gain from the seller if the vendor is non tax resident in Spain ... We would advise where appropriate and suitable for all parties and finally agreed between all, that the price of the

transaction in Pounds Sterling and its equivalent in Euros is set and agreed, and in the same private contract and from the first moment it should be agreed how the payments will be made, in which currency and by what means: by bank

transfer, bankers draft, etc. If you want to buy or sell a property in Spain, contact us and we’ll help.

Think your Final Salary pension is safe? Well think again Recently proposed UK Government plans mean that pensioners could lose nearly a third of their retirement pot to save companies being crippled by growing pension costs. MPs in the influential Work and Pensions Committee are considering measures which would for the first time allow cashstrapped employers to reduce workers’ final salary-type pensions without first going through courts. Data compiled for the Daily Telegraph by pension consultancy, Hymans Robertson, reveals for the first time the startling extent to which the various proposals could impact pensioners’ incomes. Under the most drastic option firms would be allowed to reduce annual pension uplifts to as little as zero, shrinking savers’ total retirement income by as much as 30pc over the course of an average 25-year retirement. The option is designed to let employers adjust the size annual pension boosts depending on their own financial health. This gives them a breathing space for a short period, after which hopefully things can get back to normal and pension increases recommence. But fears are mounting that unscrupulous firms could take advantage of the system to cheat employees out of pension increases which are designed to protect their incomes from being eroded by inflation over the years. Another option being considered is changing minimum annual pension increases, which currently follow the Retail Price Index to track the Consumer Price Index, which has already been done with state pensions, this tends to rise at a slower rate. The move would reduce pensioners’ benefits by up to 13pc over the course of an average 25 year retirement, data shows. At present when companies go bust their pension schemes are rescued by a Government funded lifeboat scheme called the Pension Protection fund. In such cases employees lose as much as 22pc of their pension, depending on how much they earn. More than 11 million workers have final-salary pensions and could be affected by the possible overhaul, as pressure mounts on the Government to make them more sustainable. A combination of people living longer and poor investment performance means final salary-type pension funds are registering the largest funding black holes they have ever faced, with the total deficit now exceeding £1 trillion. With most final salary pensions now offering a higher than usual transfer out value, it may be time to start looking at your options before it’s too late. If you would like to find out your final salary pensions transfer value and have unbiased advice on whether it is in your best interests to move it before it’s too late, I am here to help you , please contact me by email christina.brady@blacktowerfm.com or call me on 658 892 330.

Meet a cheeky chap PHOTOGRAPHER ALEC Bettney was quick to pick up his camera when Squirrel Nutkin popped into his garden early one morning. by Jack Troughton The European Red Squirrel – immortalised in the Beatrix Potter story - is native to parts of Valencia but numbers have sadly dwindled in the last decade. Alec was up early at home in Torre de Lloris, near Xativa, to start up his new computer and said: “As if by magic a red squirrel, which I have never seen before, popped out of a tree in full view of my living room window. “Not one to be swayed by sleepy eyes and the fact it was not quite daylight, I took a series of shots.” The red squirrel finds food in various forms; it gnaws the bark or trees and the ‘tasty’ cone son pine trees “which also serve to clean and sharpen its teeth”. Fruit and nuts also make up the mammal’s staple diet. Alec added: “Its beautiful long bushy tail serves to counter-balance its acrobatic and sometimes daring leaps from branch to branch.” Alex is a professional photographer and accepts commissions. He can be contacted on 630 981 229 or by email to ibizafixit@yahoo.com.

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// A time to use your positive energies to upgrade and transform all aspects of your life. This is not change for changes sake but a real opportunity to sweep as a new broom instead of just under the carpet. As the Sun trines with Pluto you will find you are looking at things with a renewed insight of what really does need to come next in the current scheme! Many of the positive aspects of Libra are found in the forthcoming Venus sextile with Saturn. This is because Saturn is exalted in Libra and Venus is its leader. There is no need to sacrifice the happiness of others but a strong need for you to subscribe to your simple good manners. Money also comes to you from an unexpected claim of a business source

Dazzle others by having your say and let your inner voice be heard for a change. If people do not like what they hear, then that isn’t your fault; and your speech will inspire those who seek to control you in some way. Above all, with your integrity intact, you will also attract the respect and recognition and reputation that you do, so rightly, deserve!

Balancing dwarf planet Ceres is ensconced with Venus bringing a light on the love you are currently hiding inside. Not loving yourself has done you no favours whatsoever, and so, it is high time to work with the inner you. Who Knows? You may even find that you can fall in love with who you are and not who you were, that’s important! Sweep away any negativity this week as the Sun, your planetary leader, squares on Saturn. Whilst this could be seen as putting obstacles in the way it is merely asking you to double check on what you are doing and what impact it may have for others who are implicated at this stage. Somebody will have to learn a lesson this week, but it won’t be you. Venus takes on Neptune and this starts the development of a corner in which it would be prudent to watch expenses. Find alternative ways that let you keep your money where it should be, and if this means having to say no to someone then that is the way you have to play it. Finance is under the spotlight; you know it makes sense to be careful

The Venus sextile with Saturn spurs you on to get the right answers that you need right now. It has been hard waiting for news that appears to be a long time in coming; and this does little to alleviate the position you are in, through no fault of your own. Stick to your guns, in your heart of hearts you do know that faith will see you through! Secrets and lies have pointed the finger of blame to somebody you know very well is innocent. Someone has delighted in stirring things up because this is not to be merely passed off as someone getting hold of the wrong end of the stick. Use that sting in your tail to make others see the foolishness Mercury conjuncts with Jupiter bringing fresh light to a situation that would otherwise have long gone out of control. Stick to your guns because your version of the truth is not what others are saying; as they have to use a vivid imagination to concoct a story based around their guilt. Time will tell, but meanwhile, remember you have other fish to fry! The Saturn and Venus sextile brings back a nostalgia of the past as it is time for a trip along Memory Lane once more. Looking back cannot hurt you but living in the past is just not appropriate now or ever. Much water has passed under the bridge, but you are about to put your skills and talents into play, and when you do then things will work. Neptune brushes past Venus at the end of a busy week. You have been beset by minor irritating changes to your schedule, missed or cancelled appointments and a wasting of your time; which seems to be very precious to you right now. This is not the time to sign on the dotted line, wait until next week when Saturn squares on synchronicity! Neptune is opposed by the Sun, and this action blocks your way forward for just long enough to allow you to see the current error of your ways. There is no need to reinvent yourself, but accept that there are aspects not fully revealed to you, and that the truth will only hurt those who made all this a mountain out of a molehill in the first place!

Kenny, my horoscope last week was a joy to read, it seemed to be speaking just to me, and it made me realise that I now have to get on with things rather than sit and wait for change to come into my life. My husband, who never reads his horoscope ever, has started to read his stars too, which if you knew him is a great compliment to you! Jenny S. Thank you Jenny! It is great to have your feedback. Of course casting a few weekly lines that take in all aspects of the many transits relevant for each sign is an undertaking. The reason that all horoscopes are different is because the interpretation is always up to the Astrologer. I try to back every casting I do with relevant Cosmic planetary actions across the Zodiac; but it is hard to cover such a multitude of planetary activity with depth, in just a few lines. I am glad that your husband takes a peek at his stars too...and not just when he’s waiting in the dentist’s surgery. A compliment indeed!

If It’s Your Birthday This Week Look at things from all angles before you make a decision you may live to regret. So much is up in the balance right now, but the Universe provides and the Cosmos is sending out a clear message that things are going to be better for you the second time around!

PC making a crashing noise DEAR AUNTY: I am running Windows 7 but recently when starting up it makes a crash noise and says that it is missing a file to start up. The file is: c:\users\sueandsyd\AppData\Local\Conduit\BackgroundContainer\BackgroundContainer.dll: I ignore it and continue and it seems to work okay. I have Avast antivirus and also registry pro installed and have run both of these to try and find the file. I tried restoring to an earlier time but it said could not because of missing file. I’m at a loss - can you help? Sue. Aunty says: It looks like you have installed some software that as part of the default install process has installed the ‘conduit’ search system. This is some malware that takes over your home page and search engine options. This is why when you install software, especially ‘free’ software from internet download, to do an expert install, you can see and choose what is installed and what options will be changed on your PC. It may be that your Avast /RegPro may have removed some part of the Conduit software, but not all of it, hence the error messages. To remove conduit fully and properly, you have to do the following: Uninstall the Conduit software programs via Control Panel Remove Conduit from Internet Explorer, Chrome, or other web browser you are using. Remove Conduit from your PC. How to do this is detailed at this link: http:// malwaretips.com/blogs/search-conduit-virusremoval/

Computer running slowly GOOD DAY AUNTY: With the demise of Microsoft Security Essentials I have installed Avast Antivirus on my XP desktop. I already had Malwarebytes Antimalware installed. Since installing Avast, the PC speed has slowed considerably. Have you any advice and should I delete Microsoft Security Essentials? Barrie. Aunty says: The reason your PC will have slowed is that you have two Antivirus programs running at the same time - MSE and Avast. Each file the PC opens to run, both will be scanning that file - slowing the PC down. Uninstalling MSE would be a start. Also note that if using XP then use a different internet browser, like Chrome or Firefox, to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. IE is no longer supported in XP, and so no new security updates will be made should an exploit be found. Chrome and Firefox will continue to be XP supported for the foreseeable future, and should therefore be more secure than IE.

by

Dick Handscombe Practical gardener and author

A fond farewell to RTN readers Nearing my 80th birthday and having written almost 2000 gardening articles for various publications in Spain and the UK, some five hundred having been for Round Town News, I have decided to make this my last in order to give more time to other activities in my later active years. I hope that the weekly articles whether focussed on possible gardening design strategies, day to day maintenance, solving basic day to day problems or what to do if a major crisis occurs have been of help when you first started a garden here in Spain or later as you gained experience but still had things to learn about the challenges of gardening along the Costas and in inland valleys. Unfortunately my four original books, written then with Clodagh, are no longer generally available as our publisher and their main distributors closed down a few years ago as a result of the economic crisis and internet stores like Amazon Books and The Book Depository no longer always have residual new copies or second hand copies available. However I do happen to have a few left of some and will take them along to my talk to the Anglo Spanish Association at 18.30 on Monday 19TH September at the Javea Parador. Naturally I will also take along a few copies of the newer booklet like books published via the Amazon self-publishing subsidiary Create Space. ‘Living well from our garden Mediterranean style’ will be of interest to anyone trying to improve their understanding of what can be grown and consumed from the garden that is beneficial for one’s holistic wellness. It includes a gastronomic self-audit to help you assess whether you remain a fast food addict or are well on the way to eating well. ‘How to use less water in the garden’ is a brain dumping of all the things that I have used or seen on travels to reduce the water required to maintain an interesting garden. It starts by looking at the varying water needs of thirty types of gardens and finishes with a plant list of some useful drought resistant plants. One plant I should now add is the Siberian succulent Rhodiola Rosea which has helped Russian athletes gain Olympic gold medals legitimately and now me improve my strength and stamina. Interestingly I purchased

‘View from writing table to a favourite pre-breakfast walk’

the seeds from the USA but they arrived by post from China. Come the autumn I will try to germinate them and then grow on in the coolest spot in the garden. The great thing about gardening as a hobby is there is always something new to try out and the ideas often come from unexpected sources. On my 80th birthday I will have had a personal garden for 75 years. The first in 1942 was started on the pile of earth created when an unexploded bomb was dug out of our west London garden and today’s garden has corners and plants stimulated not just from earlier gardens in England and Holland plus those seen in Spain, but also by world travels when working and on exotic walking holidays. Remember that great gardens don’t start in garden centres they start with creative preplanning and the consideration of a number of options. Where possible involve partners and indeed the whole family in coming up with and evaluating features for new and existing gardens. Well my last gardening words are now recorded and about to be sent off to my good friends at RTN. So on the publication day of 2nd September I can light heartedly go off for an early morning walk in the mountains beyond the garden, without having to think about an article for next week’s edition.

France is only a few hours from the UK and therefore it makes an ideal destination for a family holiday.

Rather than fly, our choice is a more leisurely Brittany Ferries crossing from Portsmouth to St Malo. The en-suite cabin for the 12-hour overnight journey is large enough to accommodate 19-month old Harriett’s travel cot. She sleeps well. We arrive at St Malo where its cobbled streets and alleyways are welcoming. Harriett enjoys leaping up and down any steps she finds. The busy and historic fishing port is on the Emerald Coast with its 1,200km of coastline. Famous for pancakes and galettes (French cakes), St Malo has been restored after nearly being destroyed in the Blitz. From there we head to Dol de Bretagne, 40 minutes away, and to Domaine des Ormes, a holiday resort in the grounds of a restored chateau. Canvas Holidays has a selection of wooden lodges, mobile homes and tents set in the picturesque tree-lined landscape. We stay in a lodge for the week. On entering there’s an inviting and distinctive smell of pine. The cosy retreat provides plenty of room and Harriett sleeps comfortably in the loft room as you can see in the video at travelwriter.biz. Equipped with all the mod-cons including a dishwasher, self-catering is easy. There’s even a complimentary bottle of tasty local Rosé. Pregnant wife Caroline has no need to worry about what she eats either, despite her husband’s poor culinary skills… Back home we live on a busy main road and so the solitude of les Ormes, set in such a remote area, is greatly appreciated, resulting in us frequently awaking after 9am. The joy of holidays. Every morning we head for the heated indoor pool. Harriett has really taken to swimming and she particularly enjoys the wild river and Jacuzzis as well as watching daddy go down the shoots. Each day we visit different places and buy our daily baguette from a mix of boulangeries and supermarches. It quickly becomes apparent that boulangerie bread is fresher and tastier. We fill it with salad and cheese, eating our lunch on a variety of park benches. And why not? The weather is permanently above 25 degrees and there’s bright sunshine. French passers-by smile and wish us bon appetite. On the first day we visit Dol de Bretagne, which stands on the remains of a cliff and is home to St-Samson cathedral. The Intermarche is deadly quiet. On returning to les Ormes we walk around the grounds seeing bats, mice, red squirrels, ducks, Canadian geese and to Harriett’s great pleasure, a family of goats. Making our way back to the lodge, Caroline and I are dragged to the park. The swings, roundabout and train are a daily necessity for our little rascal. We have a semi-relaxing stroll through Jardin du Val Cocherel in Dinan as we try and keep Harriett to her routine of having an afternoon doze. But the little wriggler won’t have any of it, insisting on clambering out of her pushchair, strapping her shoes and reins on and toddling. In fact over the course of the holiday our little prodigy insists on staying awake during every day for fear of missing out. But the car journey always proves too much, despite her vocal assessment of the Peugeot 208 we’re driving, she falls asleep… At Dinard we patiently wait for the lifting bridge to drop. This busy fishing port offers another pleasant afternoon of lunch and walking. It’s not long before dreams of sampling local beer come to me. But will Harriett sit still for long enough? At Combourg, where the romantic novelist Chateaubriand lived in the Chateau de Combourg (and was inspired by the area), our little tinker finally settles down. After our stroll by the tranquil cypress-lined lake and some curious looks in estate agents’ windows – at land for 35,000 euros and properties from 20 or 30 thousand more – we find a café and I indulge. Caroline has a fruit juice. We enjoy it so much that we do the same again the following day in Pontorson, after another walk in another delightful park with an array of well-chosen, vibrant coloured flowers. In fact, there we have a conversation with an old local who complains about the smell of the place. During our chat he moans about recession and adds that the locals marched down Rue de Liberation at the end of the Second World War. Sadly our holiday quickly draws to a close but on our way to Cherbourg we’re sure to stop in Saint-Lo, twinned with Christchurch, Dorset, home to its own Notre Dame cathedral, which was damaged in WW2. We stumble upon Les Jardins Publiques, another beautiful park, for lunch. Returning home on the Brittany Ferries three-hour fast jet service from Cherbourg to Portsmouth, Harriett waltzes around the boat. She is sure to catch the eye of passengers, who smile at her antics. On deck she watches the swell of the sea. Harriett’s first trip abroad is a resounding success and, just like her parents, she is clearly a born traveller.

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// The rumour Blankety Blank will be back on the telly has gathered a lot of pace over the last few weeks and with David Walliams saying he is definitely on-board, it could well happen. The iconic game show originally aired in 1979 with Sir Terry Wogan as host, before comedian Les Dawson took the helm in 1993, then it later returned in 1997, with Paul O’Grady hosting as his alterego Lily Savage. Peter Davey, ITV’s Head of Comedy Entertainment described Walliams as ‘the perfect host’ saying “he’ll bring his comedic talents and warm personality to the show,” adding “after 14 years off air, we are very excited to be bringing back Blankety Blank, and the planned Christmas special will delight fans of the original whilst bringing it to life for a whole new generation.” On an internet poll 100% voted YES!

Rachel Riley comes from Rochford, Essex and having been the mathematical brains on Channel 4´s daytime puzzle show Countdown for the last seven years, is going to be sadly missed as she has jumped ship and joined the presenting team of ´Friday Night Football´ on Sky Sports. Rachel will be re-united with Jeff Stelling who presented Countdown with her for three years in ´08 -´11, as well as Gary Neville (Man Utd / England) who returns as a football pundit and commentator after a dismal spell as the manager of Valencia. Completing the team are presenter Max Rushden and former Arsenal player PauL Merson. Gary Hughes, Head of Football for Sky Sports, said: ‘It’s Sky Sports’ biggest ever Premier League season and our viewers can enjoy all the best matches.” Stand by all you grass widows!´

Its head in the sand time for the critics! Mrs Browns Boys first aired on the BBC in February 2011 and 3 million people tuned in. The show had 7 million viewers for the second series in 2012, and now we find it has topped a poll of the most popular TV comedy shows, pushing 10 million dedicated fans, including myself. The odd thing about these statistics is that the so called ´experts´ have given the show a critical mauling, accusing it of being old-fashioned and a relic from a bygone era. MBB relies on a blend of simple and unsophisticated humour with fans quoted as saying ´it leaves you feeling warm, contented and a whole lot better than you did before, and has a formula for gleeful escapism you can latch onto for some happy consistency in uncertain times.´ Eat your hearts out critics. On a live special on 23rd July Brendan O´Carroll (Mrs Brown) got in amongst all this kafuffle saying “if you ever feel lonely or a bit down, turn on the television and flick to comedy, and have yourself a good laugh, we’ll be there, you can depend on that.” Top man Brendan! If you are a Friends fan you´ll be familiar with the expression ´Oh My God!´ made famous by Manhattan born Maggie Wheeler who played Janice, the intermittent love interest of Chandler (Matthew Perry) . Maggie appeared on ITV’s “This Morning” on August 22 and fans took to Twitter freaking out about the character they can’t get enough of and the woman they hardly know. “Her voice is sooooo much different than Janice’s voice,” one person said, another wrote, “Janice from Friends is on This Morning and a part of me has died inside realizing she doesn’t actually talk like Janice from Friends,” rather wildly melodramatic don’t you think! If you missed the broadcast rather than me tell you what she said, check it out on YouTube. Friends’ Janice On A Possible Friends Movie And Her Famous Catchphrase | This Morning

´David Brent: Life on the Road´ went on general release on August 19th and is set when he goes on tour with his band ´Foregone Conclusion´ but has to use his pension to fund the concert as the ticket sales are less than he can afford to pay his band members. However what is not fictional but factual is that before he passed away David Bowie got to hear the songs written for the movie and according to The Sun he said “I’d like to hear a whole album of David Brent singing about provincial towns of Britain.” Bowie’s seal of approval came after the pair previously collaborated on spoof song ´Little Fat Man´ for BBC sitcom Extras. Gervais recalled “I wrote the lyrics and asked if he could make it a bit retro, like Life on Mars?” To which Bowie replied “Do f***ing what!”

Life Coach

WITH A background in family and matrimonial mediation, Life Coach Sara Bell helps Readers with their daily worries. If you are having difficulties with relationships, family, work or any other aspect of your life, then help is at hand.

He’s making a huge mistake They won’t forgive me Our son is 21 and has met a woman who is aged 40. He says he is serious about her, and wants to get married. We are appalled. He told us she was a bit older but did not tell us the whole story which was, she has been married twice, and has three children, one from each marriage, and the other from another relationship. It’s nothing personal - she seemed nice enough, but we can’t allow him to throw away his life like this. What can we do? My advice is to do nothing. As heartbreaking as it must be, you must bite your tongue. Your son is an adult and is old enough to make his own choices. If you criticise it may only serve to strengthen his determination. In time he may come to realise that being with someone who is 19 years older may bring its problems. When he is 28, she will be 47. He will still be a young man. Or, their relationship may last a lifetime, but it is his choice to make. Write to Sara in confidence. A pseudonym will be used if you wish. Sara reads all letters and can give a personal reply. Email your question to agonyaunt@roundtownnews.com or Sara is available for private consultations, telephone 650 054 467.

I left my husband three years ago. The children, who were 14 and 17 at the time, stayed with him. The relationship with them afterwards was not good. They blamed me for the break-up, and to be honest, it was my doing. Since then, I have split up with my new man. My ex-husband and I have been seeing each other again, and think we want to give it another chance, but our children are not happy for us. They said they saw their Dad go through hell and they are refusing to welcome me back.

Well, a situation like this is never going to be easy. I assume your ex husband has talked to them, and asked them to forgive you. It took a long time for them to deal with your leaving, and so it may also take a long time for them to be happy about you returning. If I were you, I wouldn’t be in a rush to move back in to the house until your children have accepted the situation. Time, forgiveness, and a lot of reassuring is needed here.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Contrasting tenses Last week we looked at two of the most common past tenses in Spanish.

It is always difficult to define the use of tenses in any language as it is not an exact science. Very often two or more tenses can be perfectly correct in a sentence, the difference simply being what we wish to say. This idea does not appeal to people who want to be given clear rules of right and wrong, but it is the reality of language: not just the Spanish language, but even more so the English language which is a very complex animal. However, it is possible to draw some general defining lines, and we were attempting to do this last week. One issue remained which was to look at the way the two particular past tenses can be contrasted. In this instance we have a similar feature in English, which should help us to understand. We have already said that the past “continuous” or “imperfect” tense can be used descriptively, providing us with some sort of background scene. In the same way it can also give the background context to some other past action or actions. In this case the past actions would be expressed in the past “simple” tense. There is an example of this which is often used in teaching English, but which also works well in Spanish. Here is a sentence to start us off: “Yesterday I had a shower” “Ayer me duché” This clearer refers to a completed and finished action in the past so rightly uses the past simple tense in both English and Spanish. It is completely irrelevant whether the shower lasted two minutes or twenty minutes, the only thing I am saying at present is that it happened. Now look at the next sentence: “While I was having a shower, the phone rang”. “Mientras yo me duchaba, sonó el teléfono” Here we have a contrast between one action which lasts longer and creates a context or background for another action. We can also say that the second action in some way interrupts the first action. As you can see, in English we mark this contrast with “I was having” (which is a past continuous tense) and “rang”( which is a past simple tense). Likewise in Spanish “me duchaba” is our past continuous tense and “sonó” is our past simple tense. I wouldn’t normally draw such close parallels between the two language systems, but in this case it isn’t a problem. The important point to notice is we are talking about exactly the same shower, lasting the same length of time, what is different is what we are saying about it. Now think about this sentence. “While the phone was ringing I fell on the floor” “Mientras sonaba el teléfono me caí al suelo” Now we have the same ringing. Maybe it lasted five seconds, or ten or twenty. Whichever way, it only lasted a relatively short time, but it can still be referred to in the past continuous tense because it is creating a background against another event or action, the fact that I fell on the floor. It might be pushing it a bit, but we could go one stage further – perhaps I knocked something over as I was falling on the floor! However, I hope you have got the point. The past tenses do not describe specific lengths of time or specific points of time in the past, they depend on what we are saying about the past, and we can create specific meanings by using them in contrast to each other.

Not so Righteous Brothers HOW MANY of you ageing rockabilly rebels remember a big bearlike singing mountain man named - Ronnie Hawkins? No - shame, ‘cos he could rock.

by

Chris Ashley

Writer & Broadcaster

The Hawk is from Huntsville, Arkansas – real Duelling Banjos – ‘Deliverance’ territory. When you’re introduced to the wife & sister of Cletus .T. Hick – there’s only one woman standing there – y’all! Rockabilly Ronnie never quite cracked Yankland but was told as Canada had a dearth of good rocking talent, he could trouser a buck or two touring the frozen wastes (now of course they have Bieber & Buble – lucky Canucks). He did alright to the extent he could, in the late 1960’s, open his own club – The Hawk’s Nest at 331 Yonge Street, Toronto. Just as an aside for many years according to the Guinness Book Of Records at 1,896 km’s Yonge was the longest street in the World. However in 1999 it was discovered that due to a surveying cock up it had been tacked on to the Trans Ontario Highway – therefore it’s actual length was only 86 km’s – which is still pretty impressive, unless you’re the mail man, who doesn’t go that far on his holidays. Living in Toronto I saw many acts at the Hawk’s Nest, including Ike & a bruised Tina Turner also the Righteous Brothers where, during the boys act, a surreal moment of mayhem occurred. The Nest was – how can I put it – ambivalent toward the subtle nuances vis-à-vis social protocol (okay! dog rough). As the Brothers Righteous launched into ‘Unchained Melody’ a giant of a lumberjack stood up & demanded they sing Happy Birthday for his lady friend. They ignored him which really got his dander up. “Yankee ******* sing Happy Birthday for Betty Mae.” Ignoring axe man, Bobby & Billy warbled on about ‘Hungering for your touch & Lonely rivers flowing to the sea’- until up onto the stage Lumbered Jack lashing out with fists the size of ham shanks. Now Bill Medley is around 6’5” - Bobby Hatfield was a foot shorter – guess who laid Jack out sparko? Yep! Bantam Bob, & to tumultuous applause without missing a beat they segued straight into ‘You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling’ & apparently so did Betty Mae. As her ‘Treetop Lover’ ironically lay prone like toppled timber she staggered off with a passing Hell’s Angel – ain’t love grand? Your rocking memories are always welcome, email; ashleybobble@hotmail.com

Under 45 years of age, the main concerns for returning back to work Returning to work may cause disturbances such as lack of appetite, muscle aches and irritability. In the case of children, before going back to school, these symptoms may be signs of bullying suffered in the previous year. Valencia, 25th August 2016 The return to routine after the holiday period often leads to physical changes, such as fatigue, lack of appetite, drowsiness, muscle aches and fatigue; and psychic, apathy, irritability, nervousness, restlessness, hopelessness and sadness. Experts explain from hospitals Quirónsalud Valencia, Torrevieja y Murcia. This is a state of malaise that appears accompanied by symptoms that hinder the return to daily activity. If the discomfort does not disappear within ten to fifteen days, you should consult with your doctor, because it could be that we are faced with a different process that will require specialized care, “says Marina specialist Sangonzalo, from the Clinical Psychology Unit of Hospital Quirónsalud Valencia. This phenomenon is relatively recent and is related to the final stage of the summer and Christmas holidays or those rest periods that equal or exceed one week. “The fact that it is now easier for people to express their symptoms with accessibility to social networks and new technologies, but in reality this syndrome has existed long before and was suffered in silence with the same frequency with even more intensity, “explains Joaquin Conesa, psychologist at Quirónsalud hospital Murcia.

About 20% of patients recover within one or two days and 35% can prolong this discomfort for up to two weeks. “In the worst case if after two weeks these symptoms persist or new alarming ones appear you should consult a specialist in clinical psychology to rule out the beginning of a more serious condition,” advises Joaquin Conesa. “Generally this usually affects people under 45 years of age and those who make a radical changes to normal everyday life without pausing straight to a holiday lifestyle”, explains Marina Sangozalo, “Depending on each individual the return to routine can be perceived as an undesirable event or an opportunity to resume or start new projects. The way of facing the return for each person is either exciting or pure torture” “With regard to children,” Says the specialist, “we must be alert if, when returning to school, that if any unexpected separation anxiety, abdominal pain or undue fatigue and irritability appears, especially first thing in the morning that these symptoms may reflect a possible harassment that the child may have suffered in the previous year “. How to avoid the post-holiday syndrome Depending on the circumstances surrounding each person, experts advise attending the following steps: 1. Make a nice photo album in order to revive memories of the good times. 2. Plan incorporating a routine two days before the end of the holiday as adaptation period 3. Gradually resume regular bedtimes and wake up times. 4. Program leisure activities for the first few days after the

return. A good movie or a walk in the park can be very rewarding. 5. Sleep more hours during the first few days of returning to normal routine. You also need to rest after holidays. 6. Adjust your level of activity early mornings. Go from less to more, by doing so you will feel more competent. 7. Avoid white thinking (the happiness of the holiday) and black (the suffering of routine). Open the door to rewarding moments at any time of year. 8. Do not permanently complain. This will not help you adapt and will only make you feel bad. 9. Do not take vital decisions about future careers, during these days if you notice that you are very affected by returning to work ask for advice and wait to feel better. 10. Confront the return with exciting ideas and make sure goals are met. Do the same as children, resume your vital projects in September. Back to School Eye Health Advice Specsavers Opticas are committed to helping people of all ages to see clearly and keep their eyes healthy.

This is why, in time for the back to school rush, they are offering kids’ eye tests for free throughout September and each store is donating 10 pairs of glasses to their local school or charity. Specsavers Opticas are also offering parents advice, throughout the month of September, on how to keep their children’s eyes healthy: “As parents we like to give our children the best start in life, and seeing well is intrinsically linked to so many behavioural, social and educational issues that it’s vital to help them care for their eyes. By simply taking them for regular eye tests and teaching them how to avoid damaging their eyes in play, you can help them to protect their eyes and identify any issues early so they do not effect development. Here are some simple tips you can teach your child so they are aware of potential hazards to their sight 1. Never poke things into your eyes, not even fingers. 2. Never play with strong chemicals, like washing-up liquid, washing powder or bleach. Getting these in your eyes can be very dangerous. 3. Never throw sand or dirt in anyone’s face. 4. Never look straight at the sun – not even through dark glasses. The bright light from the sun can burn your retina. 5. If an optician suggests you need to wear glasses – wear them! 6. Always wear sunglasses which block out the sun’s harmful rays in bright sunshine. 7. Always wear safety glasses when you handle harmful substances. As well as helping children to protect their eyes, identifying any problems with your child’s eyesight is very important in their early years. Poor vision can effect social and educational development throughout their whole life if the problem goes undetected, so it’s vital to take them for regular tests from the age of 3. Look out for signs such as sitting too close to the TV, rubbing their eyes or complaining of headaches, which can indicate there’s a problem. If you

see any of these signs, take them for a test right away. Full eye tests are free at Specsavers Opticas for all children under 16 years throughout September, and they don’t need to be able to read to have one.” Specsavers Opticas currently has eight stores in Spain; Marbella and Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol, Santa Ponça Mallorca, Calpe, Javea, Benidorm, Guardamar del Segura and Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca. Visit www.specsavers.es for more advice and information about eye care, to find your nearest store and book a free back to school eye test. Sing Lloyd Webber hits by Jack Troughton

MELODY MAKERS International and conductor Nigel Hopkins start La Zenia rehearsals for a new show featuring the songs of Andrew Lloyd Webber. The choir will perform songs from the hit musicals such as Phantom of the Opera, Jesus Christ Superstar, Cats, Starlight Express, Joseph, and Evita.

And anyone who would like to join the group singing with this highly successful choir is invited to get in touch. Rehearsals start on Tuesday 6th September at the Asturias Restaurant in Punta Prima and take place every week from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. Prospective singers are asked to attend a little earlier for a voice test. However, Nigel believes as long as people can sing a certain

range in tune, they can be trained to join his award-winning choir. For more information call 96 677 5976 or 649 570 923; alternatively, email nigelhopkins@hotmail.co.uk. Plans are also under way to sing at the Benidorm Palace Christmas Show in December, along with top quartet ‘Il Divo’, following the choir’s hugely successful visit there last year.
