GENERATIONS HAVE grown up with the annual Poppy Appeal and are comfortable with making a donation every year in return for a scarlet paper flower – proudly wearing it in memory of those who gave their lives for freedom. These days the Royal British Legion offers a host of poppy-themed items, including brightly coloured and fashionable wristbands, to entice everyone to give generously. And 95 years after the first appeal following the carnage of the Great War, the charity continues to support servicemen and women and their families and stands proud as the ‘Guardian of Remembrance’, keeping the memory of the fallen in the First World War and subsequent conflicts alive. Along the Costas bars and restaurants have collection boxes and poppies for sale. Members of the Legion are out and about raising money for the charity and its all important welfare fund. Armistice Day falls on 11th November and this year Remembrance Sunday is 13th November. Before the arrival of the two historic milestones and acknowledging the importance and meaning of the two dates to British people, make a donation and wear a poppy with pride.

Migrants rescued in cold waters ELEVEN MIGRANTS were rescued off the Alicante coastline at the beginning of the week by a Maritime Rescue helicopter and the “Polaris” rescue boat. by Caroline Tyszka Saved from their sailboat about 50 miles off the coast of Elche the immigrants have claimed to the authorities that they are Libyan. Red Cross teams were sent to the Alicante-Elche airport to receive the group on Monday evening and treat them for any injuries or medical conditions. All of the eleven were male, ranging from 18 and 28 years old, and in good health although some required treatment for mild hyperthermia. The men were given food, clean clothes and essentials by the Red Cross before being taken for questioning by the police. Red Cross officials say that this is the highest number of interventions that they have encountered for the region having already attended six other such rescues this year.

Call to end animals in shows A LOCAL political party has asked their council to ban the use of animals in shows following several complaints by the public from a recent fiesta. Elche’s political party Podemos Elx has made the request following the town’s recent Fireta del Camp d’Elx event where a young donkey, around 32 days old, was separated from its mother so that children could pose with the baby for photographs. The celebration weekend, which shows local produce and farm animals, came under fire as it was noted that many of the animals were “in a poor condition.” Other animals cited in the complaint were a goat who had to give birth whilst on display and ponies who were tied with less than one metre of rope to move, drink or sit during the three day fair. Podemos Elx stated: “We have asked the governing parties to ban the use of animals in fairs, shows and any other activities which involve cruelty or mistreatment in our town.”

The hun for more of Britain’s most wanted fugitives

Ten more of the most wanted British fugitives believed to be hiding in Spain’s ex-pat communities have been revealed in a new appeal by independent UK crime-fighting charity Crimestoppers and the National Crime Agency (NCA). Publication of the latest list coincides with the 10th anniversary of Operation Captura –a multi-agency campaign which has seen 76 fugitives apprehended out of 86 publicised. The ten fugitives are wanted by law enforcement agencies in connection with crimes including murder, child sexual exploitation, drug trafficking, fraud, money laundering and serious assault. Lord Ashcroft KCMG PC, the Founder and Chair of Crimestoppers, said: “As we mark the tenth anniversary of Operation Captura, it is safe to say it has been an extremely effective way of tracking down some of the most wanted individuals who are deliberately running from justice. “These people have managed to evade arrest and avoid justice. We know that with the help of Spanish authorities, along with the public in Spain and the UK, we can find these people.” Steve Reynolds, Head of International Operations for the NCA, said: “The success of Captura demonstrates our relentless pursuit of fugitives. We never give up. Many of them use Spain as a base to continue illegal activities which still have an impact on the UK, but it is not a safe haven. “Seventy-six fugitives on the Captura list have been caught to date, along with many more fugitives linked to other operations. The exceptional level of collaboration and intelligence sharing we have with the Spanish authorities has been vital to these arrests. “The fugitives we are hunting are wanted for serious crimes and must be returned to the UK to face justice. We need the support of the public to help us catch them. Be our eyes and ears and tell us if you have any information on the whereabouts of our targets.” Crimestoppers and the NCA liaise closely with the British Embassy in Madrid and with both British and Spanish law enforcement agencies. Simon Manley, British Ambassador to Spain, said: “Captura is one of the best examples of the fantastic collaboration between Spanish and British law enforcement. Our objective is for this collaboration to continue and strengthen in the coming years. I would like to congratulate all those that have worked over the last 10 years to bring fugitives to justice.” Information received by Crimestoppers will help to locate the fugitives on the Operation Captura list. nt is on Shane O’Brien, aged 28, from London: Wanted by the Metropolitan Police on suspicion of murder. In October 2015 O’Brien was in a wine bar in Middlesex with several friends. It is alleged that O’Brien approached a man called Josh Hanson who was with his girlfriend at the bar, removed an item from his coat pocket and plunged it into the his neck. Josh was pronounced dead at the scene. A £20,000 reward is available for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of O’Brien. He is described as 183cm tall, slim build, grey eyes and short dark brown hair. Also has a birthmark on his face, and a tattoo on his back ‘Shannon 15-0406’. O’Brien also has links to Dubai. Jamie Acourt, aged 40, from South London: Wanted by the Metropolitan Police on suspicion of conspiracy to supply cannabis resin between 1 January 2014 and 1 February 2016. Acourt is believed to be a principal member of an organised crime group involved in the large-scale supply of cannabis. He is described as 173cm tall, athletic build, pale complexion, dark brown hair, brown eyes, and sometimes wears glasses. Jonathon Kelly, aged 36, from Glasgow: Wanted by Police Scotland on recall to prison to serve remaining sentence of 9 years 10 months for a number of serious assaults. Kelly, who is extremely violent and poses a high risk to both police and members of the public, was convicted at various courts of a number of offences between 2002 and 2010. He received sentences in excess of 16 years, and in September 2013 he was released on licence but failed to adhere to conditions set. The offences he was convicted of included an assault to severe injury and danger of life, robbery, assault to severe injury and permanent disfigurement, breach of the peace and having a sharply pointed implement in prison. In one of the most serious assaults Kelly stabbed and paralysed his victim using a machete. He was also subject of a sexual offences prevention order. He is described as 180cm tall, heavy build, blue/grey eyes, short brown hair, Scottish accent, and occasionally has a beard. Also has scars to the left and right side of the face, on his arms and his right hand. Stephen Carruthers, aged 43, from Bury: Wanted by Cumbria Police on suspicion of 18 offences of making indecent photographs of a child. Carruthers was arrested when police officers executed a search warrant on 27 March 2014 at an address in Ambleside where he was living at the time. A computer recovered was analysed and found to contain 5,332 indecent images of children. The most serious of the images showed contact sexual abuse between adults and children. He was interviewed and denied committing any offences. He was given bail to re-attend the police station but failed to answer his bail. He is described as 172cm tall, medium build, short brown hair or shaved head and has blue eyes. Sarah Panitzke, aged 42, from Fulford: Wanted by HMRC for conspiracy to acquire criminal property. Panitzke was a senior member of a crime group involved in a VAT fraud. She controlled the company accounts of many companies remotely via different IP addresses. Panitzke travelled extensively to further the fraud to places including Dubai, Spain and Andorra. She was responsible for laundering approximately £1billion pounds. Panitzke absconded in May 2013 prior to the end of the

trial and was convicted in her absence. She was sentenced to eight years on 22 August 2013. Eighteen members of the crime group received sentences totalling 135 years. She is described as 170cm tall, slim build with mousey straight hair, blue eyes and has a Yorkshire accent. Mark Acklom, aged 43, from London: Wanted by Avon & Somerset Police on suspicion of fraud by false representation. Acklom allegedly make a number of false representations after starting a romantic relationship with a woman from Bath in January 2012. She said Acklom first claimed to work in the banking world in Switzerland and was very wealthy, and then later went on to say he worked for an intelligence agency. During their relationship she said they discussed marriage. After saying he had cash flow problems that were hindering renovation work at one of the properties he wanted them to live in, the woman gave him numerous loans totalling £850,000. It later transpired that Acklom did not own the property. He disappeared and she never received any of her money back. He is described as 5ft 10ins tall, medium build, dark brown hair and green eyes. Matthew Sammon, aged 45, from London: Wanted by the Metropolitan Police on suspicion of making and possessing indecent photographs of children. On 24 April 2014 a search warrant was executed at his home in Croydon as officers believed that indecent images of children had been downloaded on a computer registered at the address. He was not at home at the time. Several hard drives, computers and USB sticks were seized. He was arrested on 28 April 2014 and interviewed before being bailed to attend the police station at a later date. He failed to answer his bail and was circulated as wanted. He is described as 5ft 9ins tall, short brown hair, medium build, and speaks with a soft London accent. Dominic McInally, aged 25, from Liverpool: Wanted by Merseyside Police on suspicion of conspiracy to supply cocaine. McInally is the alleged leader of a drug trafficking gang that expected to bank £1.25m every month. Members of the gang travelled to the border of France and Belgium to pick up six kilos of cocaine. The package, secreted in a hidden compartment inside a Seat Leon car, was intercepted by police officers when they swooped on the gang near Crosby in January 2014. McInally evaded capture. Five members of the gang have received sentences totalling 48 years. He is described as 178cm tall and has blond hair. Mark Quinn, aged 52, from Liverpool: Wanted by Police Scotland on suspicion of supplying amphetamine. Between August 2013 and April 2014 Quinn was allegedly involved in an organised crime group concerned in the production, transportation and distribution of amphetamine with a street value of over £11m. He is described as 5ft 9ins tall, large build and has short brown hair. Simon McGuffie, aged 41, from Liverpool: Wanted by The North West Regional Organised Crime Unit (Titan) on suspicion of being a member of a Merseyside organised crime group involved in the large-scale supply of Cocaine, Heroin and Cannabis across the North West. He has a scarred right arm and distinctive 2” scar to the right cheek.

We can be heroes by Jack Troughton PEOPLE ACROSS the Costas are urged to dig deep to support the Royal British Legion’s 2016 Poppy Appeal and help meet the charity’s ever-growing welfare bill. A massive 1.5 million Euros is spent every day helping servicemen and women and their families – making the appeal a “vital” source of funding. The 2016 appeal, the 95th after the charity was formed in 1921, was launched by the Royal British Legion in Spain District North was launched in Benidorm last Friday in a blaze of colour. The message to the public was to please give generously. Appeal organiser Robin Hargrave said: “I ask, nay plead with you, to please give whatever you can spare. Please ask all your friends and neighbours to do the same.” Spain’s most famous holiday resort has become the adopted home for the launch of the Legion’s Poppy Appeal and the parade along the promenade was led by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums. The Legion’s standard bearers Marched in file behind the band, the Union Jack and yellow and red of the Spanish flag accompanying the standard of District North and the individual branch colours. And Chelsea Pensioners Wayne and Skippy – wearing their traditional scarlet uniforms – were once again the popular guests of honour at the parade; and were joined by the Mayor of Benidorm Antonio Perez; the British defence Attache to Spain Capt. Paul Lemkes RN; The Chairman of the Royal British Legion’s Membership Council, Lt. Col. David Whimpenny: British Vice Consul from Alicante, Sara Munsterhjelm; and District North Chairman David Hails. The rousing music of the band and the spectacle of the parade; supported by branch members from along the Costas, attracted a host of holidaymakers and donations were soon rolling in. At the Rincon de Loix the emotional Last Post was sounded – followed by a two-minute silence to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice; and Reveille. EFFORT Last year the Poppy Appeal raised £36.6 million and over 171,543€ was added to the total through the determined efforts of District North. Mr Hargrave said 100 years ago the British and Commonwealth Armies were embroiled in the middle of the Great War. Veterans returning from the front were promised as ‘a land fit for heroes’. He added: “It was not such thing.” And he said the ‘war to end all wars’ failed to prevent conflicts around the world and the British Armed Forces continued to serve – most recently in the Falklands, Iraq and Afghanistan – while the demands on the Legion continued to grow. Mr Hails said: “It is sincerely hoped that once again, with your support, we will raise a great deal of money during the Poppy Appeal. The demands made on us are ever increasing and we must insure we have the ability to respond to the needs of our members and their families.” Lt. Col. Whimpenny added: “The Poppy Appeal is vital to the work of the Royal British Legion. The equivalent of 1.5 million Euros is spent every day to support our beneficiaries and their families. “And the hard work of everyone here in Spain makes a very significant contribution to our appeal.” Mayor Antonio Perez congratulated the Legion on its work and “spirit of service” that would always find encouragement in Benidorm. “Together we will continue to overcome adversity. The Royal British Legion is an example of how the only possible way forward is fraternity amongst people not confrontation and disagreement,” he said. “I encourage the Legion to continue working in defence of those values that unite us and define us all in civilised society – the values of freedom, equality and personal growth; values that make us freer, fairer, and braver.”

Down came the rain! THIS WEEKS autumnal weather has been a reminder that as the nights get shorter the rain lasts for longer. by Caroline Tyszka With almost all of the Costa Blanca being affected by the cold front - which arrived on Tuesday – it has been down with the parasols and up with the brollies. Holidaymakers staying in resorts up and down the coast have been forced to abandon their beach days and find other, drier activities to keep them and their families occupied. The north coast of Alicante was put on alert for heavy rain mid-week with Aemet, the State Meteorological Agency, warning that there could be localised flooding. As residents will know forecasting is not an accurate science for Spain, with many towns escaping the heavy deluge of water whilst their neighbours – just the other side of nearby hillsides or mountains – could tell a different story. Whilst it may have put a dampener on some peoples spirits the agricultural sector will be pleased that their prayers have been answered, having faced extreme drought conditions for most of this year – affecting crops and livestock. However much more rain is needed to alleviate what has been three years of similar conditions. The good news is, that although it has been almost a week of on-off rain, Aemet predict that by Sunday the temperatures will be around 27 degrees (81 F), still slightly higher than the October average of 21 degrees (70 F).

Equality in paternity and maternity leave approved by Spanish parliament Paid paternity leave here in Spain is to be increased to 16 weeks to give men equality with women, under new measures agreed by parliament members this week. by james martin Fathers are currently entitled to 13 consecutive days off work, this will increase to 20 days if the family is large â&#x20AC;&#x201C; with three or more children â&#x20AC;&#x201C; or if the child should be born with any disability. Under existing arrangements, 10 weeks of maternity leave can be transferred to the father, an option taken up by less than 2% of men. Under the new law, maternity and paternity leave will not be transferable. The proposal was put forward by the Podemos party on the grounds that both the Spanish constitution and European law prohibit discrimination on grounds of gender. It was passed with 173 in favour and only two against. The agreement is yet to be budgeted as Spain is still formally without a government but opponents to the law in the Peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s party, which is expected to form a minority government by the end of this month, said the measure would significantly increase costs.

Council fined over 2 million euros A COUNCIL has been ordered to pay compensation to a contractor as they did not meet their contractual terms as agreed. by Caroline Tyszka The La Paloma building in Pilar de la Horadada was built by Urdemasa SA, having been awarded the contract in 2002, however the project was never finished as the council did not complete the parking facilities as stated in the agreement. The administrative court in Elche awarded Urdemasa SA the sum of 2,359,414 euros, and decreed that the council must pay all court fees. Having been left standing for some period of time the building is now said to be in a shocking state, with theft and vandalism the prime problems. The council has the right of appeal which would then go to the Administrative Litigation of the Superior Court of Valencia.

Cave sweet cave

CAVE PAINTINGS described as the “most spectacular and impressive” ever discovered on the Iberian Peninsula has been found near the Basque town of Lekeitio. by Jack Troughton

Dating as far back as 14,000 years ago, some 50 etchings adorn a 15m panel of the cave and experts will discuss the significance of the find at a special meeting at the end of the month. The home decorations include horses, bison, and goats – and in a radical departure in known Palaeolithic art in the Biscay province – two lions. And some of the paintings are larger than previous discoveries; one of the horses is 1.5m – almost 5ft – long...adding to the impact of the cave art. The discovery was made back in May but the importance of the find at the Armintxe cave is still being investigated. One expert said: “It is a wonder, a treasure of humanity.” The paintings include some 30 animals along with etchings of semi-circles and lines; identical to similar forms earlier found in the French Pyrenees – and other shared features, including the appearance of lions and the ‘techniques’ used suggest links between different groups of hunter-gatherers. Sadly the ‘wallpaper’ and the cave will not be opened to the public. It is difficult to access and there is a need to reserve the art; but new technology will allow everyone a real insight into the cave and its treasures.

Top dog! DOGS FROM around the country competed against each other this weekend to discover who is top dog. by Caroline Tyszka The Agility Club of Torrevieja organised the event, which had almost 200 entrants, and held the competition at the local sports centre in the town. The national agility tests were divided into four categories designed not only to find the dog that could

jump the highest but also how they worked with their handlers - negotiating obstacles such as seesaws and tunnels. Individuals and groups entrants eagerly showed what they could do with their canines with some jumping as high as 60 centimetres. Juan Miguel Paredes, president of the Torrevieja Agility Club, said, “this is an officially recognised sport, with the winners being considered elite athletes.”

Two judges, including one from the UK, were on hand to ensure that the regulation standards were met and that any time penalties were valid as the dogs travelled around various circuits. The club trains twice a week, and often travels to other parts of Spain for competitions. by Caroline Tyszka TOWNS UP and down the coast held their own “March for Life” processions this weekend to honour the day against breast cancer. In Torrevieja an estimated 400 people paraded through the town – showing their support for those diagnosed with breast cancer but also to help raise awareness of the importance of early detection for this form of cancer. Participants donned pink t-shirts, hats, backpacks and other merchandise which helped raise funds for the Cancer Association of Torrevieja. Similar scenes occurred in Benidorm on Sunday morning where the cancer charity Anémona Marina Baixa had also arranged a march – an estimated 3,000 turned up to support the cause, many who were survivors of breast cancer. The beach front was awash with blue and pink clothing as those taking part walked almost 10 kilometres to finish in the Avenida de Europa, many cheering for them from their balconies. Accompanied by a band Toni Perez, mayor of Benidorm, joined the crowds for what was their fourteenth such event. He said: “this shows the involvement of everyone - showing solidarity against the cancer and we will continue to support Anémona.” On Wednesday, 19th October, the official “international breast cancer” date, a human chain was made with pink and white balloons being released.

Registering the changes to property PROPERTY OWNERS need to officially register extensions or improvements to their homes or new buildings on their land – especially before putting them up for sale. Just a few years ago to obtain a deed of extension, declaration of a new work or building, to match the physical reality of the description appearing at the land registry, was relatively simple. Usually all that was required was a certificate from a competent technician; indicating the age of the building, which should be over four years, and the description of the property. But now, after many legal changes, it has become a much more complex issue to record an extension or new building grant an extension or declaration of new building with the land registry. This is because in Spain the land registry records only consist of a description of the property and does not include plans; and usually does not match with the ‘cadastro’ description. Administrators now strive to coordinate and match the cadastro, land registry…and reality. They want owners to provide the correct documents to reflect the changes. Owners must provide such things as the geographic coordinates’ reference of each of the changes they wish to register, which can lead to technical problems, such as differences of criteria between registrars and topographers. Further, it is necessary to provide an occupation license or equivalent, stating that the property or its extension is fit for purpose. This all becomes of extraordinary importance owners want to sell their property – especially if the description in the cadastro and land registry does not match the physical reality. And it is possible a buyer imposed as a condition of the purchase the land registry and cadastro was updated; risking unforeseen delays. Therefore, it is advisable to update property records with the land registry to prevent last minute problems when homes and land go on the market; putting a sale at risk. Hard times for Savers Just when savers were hoping for some good news after a few years of low interest rates it looks like things are going to get worse with rates falling month by month since the summer of 2012. In August 2012, the best buy easy access UK account paid 3.2 per cent; today it pays just 1 per cent. Across the Europe and the UK savers are lucky if they can get above 0.50% interest on their savings and some Banks are already charging business customers to deposit money Yet, bad as things may seem, savers haven’t suffered as much as they might have done, at least over the past two years. That’s because in August 2014, inflation fell and in Europe and the UK it has continued to date to stay low or even venture into negative territory. That means that despite the meagre rates on offer on savings accounts, savers have been earning a real return on their money (one above inflation). The bad news is that this is changing especially in the UK. In the UK Inflation is rising, and is likely to continue to be driven up by the falling pound and rising oil and energy costs. Meanwhile, the post-Brexit vote rate cut has sent savings rates down again. Even in Europe inflation is now on the rise, be it a lot slower than in the UK. But what this means for savers in the UK and Europe is that we cannot be too far from the point where those two lines cross once more and savers end up losing money in real terms. Arguably, many savers with decent pots should invest some of their money over and above a rainy day (contingency) fund. Savers are missing out on the potential for better returns by not doing so, but they are also avoiding the chance of losing money if markets fall. But the savvy savers are realising that nowadays they have to accept some risk if they are going protect their money against growing inflation that will gradually diminish the real value of their savings. PATIENT PHOTOGRAPHER Alec Bettney finally got the beautiful but shy ‘Hoopoe’ bird in front of his camera. by Jack Troughton He has combed Valencia’s mountain woodland hoping to capture the Hoopoe – so named because of its call – on camera but has always been thwarted. However, Alec’s luck changed last Friday when several dropped into his garden and started feeding. He said: “I have wanted to photo the Hoopoe bird for ages and it’s a very shy bird and very well disguised by its chosen surroundings. “Weeks of chasing the Hoopoe in Valencia mountain woodland ended in frustration as these birds nearly always move off at the slightest hint of a dangerous photographer looming down on them. “But on Friday 14th Oct, they came to our garden to rummage in the new sawn wood in the orchard. Kenny, I get a feeling in my stomach sometimes and this is usually a warning of some kind. Where does it come from? Is it a Spiritual feeling developing? May- Brit E. Hi May- Brit. That feeling you get sounds as if it is some spiritual energy reaching out to you; it certainly could be. The stomach is a highly tuned and sensitive part of the body; and we react differently to the sensations that it sends. Take for instance the take off in a plane. Not converting to Skydrive Hi Aunty: Please can you give me some advice about the purchase of Regcleanpro, as I am experiencing a problem with opening emails sent via Microsoft Word to edit or copy. I once was able to - now it seems it will not convert to SKYDRIVE; it insists on putting them onto Acrobat or tells me to download on to my documents. Either way I can’t seem to access them for the purpose of amending for returning them by email or copying for that matter. My system seems slow and very frustrating as I am being bombarded with RegClean Pro and I am unsure whether that would solve my problem. Regards, Hazel Aunty says: Regclean pro is a ‘system cleaning’ tool. It may, or may not help with the problem you are having with your MS Word emails. Usually, from the email, you save the document onto your PC, say into My Documents. Then you can click on that document to open it up in MS Word, and that will allow you to edit. If you are clicking on a saved word document, and it is opening up in Adobe, then it sound like your file associations have become confused. In windows you can change the file associations: Right click on the file Select ‘open with’ If MS Word is in that list select that, and make sure the ‘always use this program to open this type of files’ is selected.

Cannot buy online using Google Nexus DEAR AUNTY Virus: When I try to order goods or services online, using my Google Nexus tablet, some sites will not accept my email address. I receive the message ‘email address not valid’. This applies to both my Gmail and Yahoo mail addresses. This is frustrating. Can you help me to resolve this issue? A dusty old cobweb from the BBC of the 60´s Sooty, the children’s television show, has been aired in various forms since the 1950s and, according to Guinness World Records, is the longest-running children’s programme in the UK. We will soon be treated to a documentary called Sooty Ungloved, which takes a no-holds-barred look at the history of the iconic telly puppet, and already there is a major story unfolding. It seems that there was a right old to do at the BBC when Sooty´s creator Harry Corbett had the gall to suggest Sooty should have a girlfriend … Shock! Horror! The show’s producer Trevor Hill suggested that such a move would ‘allow sex to creep into the programme,’ and would not be swayed saying, “no female character, definitely not!” The situation spiralled out of hand after the press got wind of the row, with the BBC even prepared to ‘hold up the contractual negotiations´ which could have led to an early bath for the puppet. Corbett´s son Matthew said ‘My father was called into the head office and told by the Director General that Sooty could have a girlfriend, but they must never touch’. ´Enchanted´ a 2007 American live-action/animated musical starred Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, and the now famous Timothy Spall. I was recommended to watch it, and what a pleasant surprise I got, as it’s beautifully done with fine acting and a hilarious script. Amy Adams plays Princess Giselle who finds herself transported from her joyous fairy-tale animated world of Andalasia into the real-life hardships of 21st century Manhattan in New York. A sequel is now planned, titled Disenchanted, and, according to The Hollywood Reporter is set to start filming next year. Amy Adams is expected to return in the starring role, but here’s no word on whether Patrick Dempsey will return, but we imagine he will with his wistful Disney-style singing in tow. Enchanted (2007) - HD Trailer YouTuber Darth Blender has remade Fifty Shades Of Grey, except lovedup Muppet Kermit plays Christian Grey and Miss Piggy Anastasia Steele, and the chemistry between them is … sizzling! OK, so there’s a bit less of the Red Room and no actual blindfolds or whips and stuff, but there is a whole lot of clever editing, which seamlessly matches clips from a host of Muppet classics to the trailer’s original dialogue. Darth Blender explains “Miss Piggy is a modest and virgin student who suddenly meets the powerful and charming businessman Kermit The Frog, the attraction is immediate, and soon they begin an intense relationship in which Miss Piggy discovers her deepest desires and pleasures of sadomasochism.” Sounds like you might need a brown paper bag for the video! Craig David had a No1 album in 2000 and he did the same last month with his latest offering ´Following My Intuition´ making No1 in the UK. Plagued by junk mail I live in Spain, and on a recent trip home to see my elderly mother, I discovered that she is sending money to companies who are promising her a cash prize if she buys arthritis cures from them. I’ve read about such people in the paper, who extort money from vulnerable people, however my mother believes she will win money. Mother has Dementia and I don’t know what to do. I have a cousin at home who might help if I ask him. If I were you, I would try and see if you could redirect your mother’s mail to your cousins address, and then ask him to put it straight through a paper shredder. Simply writing to these companies does no good. They prey on the elderly particularly. Also, if your mother’s condition is bad enough for you, or a trusted family member to take over the handling her financial affairs, then you should do this. My daughter who is 15, says she wants cosmetic surgery. I am so exasperated with her. She thinks her face is ugly, and wants to have fillers, and have her lips plumped up. She wants to look like Kim Kardashian and have her rear made bigger. She says if I don’t pay for it, she will find ways of earning the money and paying for it herself. She is obsessed with the internet and her phone, and is never off it. I would try and ignore it for now, but say you are most certainly not financing this for her. She is only 15, and she needs parental consent for anything like this until she is 18 anyway. Try and find some outside group activity that does not involve taking her telephone or using the internet - like sports, or drama. Children today can become obsessed with social media and spending too long on it, can cause problems like low self esteem, when they how see celebrities live.

More examples of Past Participles I believe I’ve left you with the example of “confundido” for two weeks running now, so it’s time I unconfused you once and for all. We did get as far as realizing that “confundido” is the past participle of the verb “confundir” which we know is used as part of the “recent past” tense (as in “he confundido a mis lectores” - I have confused my readers) and we were just getting on to seeing how these past participles can be taken out of that verb tense context and used as adjectives, changing their endings to agree with whatever they describe. There is a whole range of these kinds of adjectives, derived from verbs, which express human emotions and experiences, and that is what I really wanted to get onto before we leave this whole topic behind. So, here are some examples of what I mean. The verb “agotar” means “to exhaust”, therefore the participle “agotado” expresses very clearly how I feel after a week’s work. There are other less polite words for this in English. Actually I would use the feminine form “agotada” to describe myself, and this

person and number agreement applied to all of these words. If we stick with a few more negative ideas first, here is another one – “decepcionar” meaning “to disappoint”. This is also a “false friend” as it looks rather like the English word “deception”. Anyway, if you are ever disappointed in Spanish, the word you need is “ decepcionado”. Continuing this downward tendency, we have the verb “destrozar” (to ruin). If someone is “destrozado” they really are in a bad state, but we can equally use the word to describe a building or piece of furniture, for instance. Slightly milder, but still negative is “disgustar” (to upset) . “Estoy muy disgustado/ disgustada” you may say through your tears, or of course you may apply the adjective to someone else when they storm off in a huff “creo que está disgustado” (I think he’s upset). I’m afraid there is one more negative word to mention before we change tack. The verb “enfadar” means “to anger”, so “angry” is “enfadado” or “enfadada”. A word that looks as though it might also be negative, but is fact isn’t is “emocionar”. This

does not mean to burst into tears of emotion, at least not tears of sadness, but it could include tears of joy. The verb means “to excite” or “to move” and its associations are really positive. I always remember a surprise birthday party I attended in my first year in Spain. The person whose birthday it was spent the whole time saying “estoy emocionado” which I suppose would be something like saying “I’m really touched” in English. Speaking of surprises, we have the verb “sorprender” (to surprise) so we can there express our surprise with “estoy sorprendido” (I am surprised). One of the nicest of all these verbs, I think, is

“ilusionar” (to thrill, to excite). Again, this is somewhat of a “false friend” as “illusion” in English does not have a very jolly meaning. However, it’s one of the happiest words there is in Spanish. A child is “illusionado” waiting for the three kings to bring him presents. We are “ilusionados” about a holiday or a new addition to the family, that is, we are looking forward with excitement and anticipation. Finally, a word that can be used in some everyday situations - “agradecer “ (to appreciate). If you want to express particular thanks or appreciation to someone you can say “Gracias, estoy muy agradecido”.

This is the the man who set me on the road to untold riches & besotted flighty young women chucking their flimsies at me on stage – (snort!). Look! if a wee Scot with a whiny voice banging on about chewing gum on his bedpost can crack it – the boy Ashley with his £5 Kays Catalogue guitar is a shoo-in. With my 2 acned amigos, Bazza (washboard) - Sparky (tea chest bass) we started a skiffle group called The Satellites – but as they just go aimlessly around & around and we were rocketing upwards – we changed to the more racy sounding, Gaylords (stop sniggering!). We did have a 4th member, Gonzo who was older than us & deep joy had a van. He only lasted one gig because he turned his hand to a more lucrative vocation – robbing banks. Gonzo got busted and served time. We, the remaining compassionate members, were distraught – no transport. The police seized it as it was his getaway vehicle. The van was a 1930’s Bedford - it went from 0 – 60, in a week. The plod on a leisurely stroll with a doddery dog would still have caught up with Gormless Gonzo. Meanwhile we carted our kit around on a Southdown bus with the added humiliation of needing to buy a ticket for the tea chest bass from a sneering clippy. For some reason we used to get packed Young Farmer’s barn dance gigs, which still puzzles me – they hated us. At that time Trad Jazz was hugely popular with these rugby playing ‘sons of the sod’ & skiffle was considered to be the runt of the litter. Therefore we performed with the threat of imminent rugger bugger violence (that’s just from the wenches) if we made a bolognese of ‘Darktown Strutters Ball.’ The end came swiftly for The Gaylords (will you – STOP!- that sniggering?). Yours truly decided to go solo - to overwhelming apathy. Bazza finished in the same nick as Gonzo on an unrelated charge. Sparky quit scraping the washboard with his Mum’s thimbles, had a nervous breakdown & years later joined the Branch Davidians – last I heard he’s still waiting for the second coming – but not of The Gaylords (Oh! go on then – snigger). Pork & apple stew with parsley & thyme dumplings

This healthy family supper has dumplings that soak up all the flavours of cider, mustard and a hint of apple, and it’s 3 of your 5-a-day Ingredients For the stew 1 tbsp rapeseed oil 2 onions, halved and sliced 3 celery sticks, thickly sliced 2 bay leaves 1 tbsp picked thyme leaves 500g lean pork fillet, cut into large chunks 2 tsp English mustard powder 4 large garlic cloves, grated 2 tbsp spelt flour 4 tbsp cider vinegar 800ml bouillon or chicken stock 1 Granny Smith apple, peeled, cored and cut into chunks 2 leeks, thickly sliced 4 carrots, cut into chunks For the dumplings 140g spelt flour

1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp English mustard powder 2 tbsp finely chopped flat-leaf parsley 1 tbsp picked thyme leaves, plus a few sprigs to garnish 2 tbsp bio yogurt 2 tbsp rapeseed oil Method Heat 1 tbsp of the oil in a flameproof and ovenproof dish. Add the onions, celery, bay and thyme, and fry for about 8 mins until softened. Add the pork and cook for a few mins until it changes colour, but it doesn’t need to brown as you don’t want to overcook it. Stir in the mustard powder, garlic, flour and vinegar, then pour in the bouillon, stirring to prevent any lumps forming.

Add the apple, leeks and carrots, bring the liquid to the boil, then reduce to a simmer. Cover the pan and simmer for 1 hr, stirring occasionally, until the pork and vegetables are tender. When the stew is nearly cooked, heat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5. To make the dumplings, tip the flour, baking powder, mustard powder, parsley and thyme into a bowl and

stir to combine. Put the yogurt in a jug, make up to 100ml with water, then stir in the oil. Lightly stir the liquid into the flour to make a soft, slightly sticky dough. Divide the dough equally into eight and shape into balls. Drop them on top of the stew, drizzling each one with the remaining oil. Bake for 20 mins until the dumplings are golden. Scatter with the extra thyme, if you like, before serving.

Brilliant banana loaf A cross between banana bread and a drizzle-topped sponge, this cake is great for using up overripe fruit Ingredients 140g butter, softened, plus extra for the tin 140g caster sugar 2 large egg, beaten 140g self-raising flour 1 tsp baking powder 2 very ripe banana, mashed 50g icing sugar handful dried banana chips, for decoration Method Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Butter a 2lb loaf tin and line the base and sides with baking parchment. Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, then slowly add the eggs with a little flour. Fold in the remaining flour, baking powder and bananas. Pour into the tin and bake for about 30 mins until a skewer comes out clean. Cool in the tin for 10 mins, then remove to a wire rack. Mix the icing sugar with 2-3 tsp water to make a runny icing. Drizzle the icing across the top of the cake and decorate with banana chips.

Pego Golf Society The Society played a Ford League Qualifier today in the format of a Singles Stableford Competition, and we were greeted on the first tee with intermittent rain, which turned into heavy rain for most of the first nine holes. In Spain we don’t do rain on the golf course, but today we had no choice. Wet shirts, trousers, golf gloves, everything was wet. It went off about hole number 10, and tried to come back on in the closing holes. I thought Oliva Nova was in as poor condition as I have seen it for many months, and the person who set the tees for this morning was having a laugh. Every tee without exemption was set at the very end of the tee, where the grass is about four to five inches long, so if you were to play the ball without a tee, the ball would disappear. Come on Oliva Nova, you can do much better than this !!! The wind increased over the morning play, so really it was a very difficult day to play this wonderful game. We had 46 players today, including four guests, and they were Steve Boyes, Graham Borley, Steve Wilkins and Geoff Gibb and all were warmly welcomed by our Captain David O’Connor. RallyRACC victory

Volkswagen’s Sebastien Ogier sealed his fourth WRC Drivers’ title with victory on RallyRACC Catalunya - Rally de Espana 13 - 16 October. It was Ogier’s fifth victory of the season and means he now emulates Tommi Makinen and Juha Kankkunen, the only other men to have also won the WRC Drivers’ title four times, although he still has some way to go to match ninetime winner Sebastien Loeb. Ogier took the lead on Friday’s opening loop, although heavy rain made the going extremely tricky. In the afternoon, however, Ogier then slipped back to second, with local star Dani Sordo making the most of his better road position to surge into the lead, ending the leg with a 17 second cushion. On day two, Ogier hunted down the Hyundai pilot, halving his advantage in the morning, and finally re-taking top spot with his fifth stage win in succession in the penultimate test. Heading into the final day, Ogier had a 5.8sec advantage, which he increased to 12.7secs after Stages 16 and 17. Ogier was then second best in Stage 18 and he pushed to the end and was second fastest in the final test.Meanwhile, Sordo had to settle for the runners-up spot, 15.6secs back and unable to realise his hope of becoming the first Spaniard to win at home since Carlos Sainz back in 1995. “Really disappointed but I need to offer Seb my congratulations. I did my best, and I want to thank my fans for their support. I did my maximum,” Sordo noted. Hyundai team-mates Thierry Neuville and the up-coming star Hayden Paddon came in third and fourth, split by only 12.8secs. Whilst this years Hyundai i20 cars were amazingly fast & agile, when asked how different next years cars will be Hayden replied “ the cars are lighter, about 15% faster and they sound a lot better . Because of the advancement in technology we can now extract more power from a 1.6 engine”. An incredible 380bhp!! Neuville now moves up to second in the Drivers’ Championship, equal on points with Andreas Mikkelsen, who failed to finish after spectacularly crashing out on Saturday in Stage 12. Sunday saw a spectacular pass of the historic rally cars much to the delight of the crowds. The World Rally Championship now heads to Wales next for Rally GB, the penultimate round of the season, running from October 28-30.

Do You Indicate? One of the biggest annoyances of drivers in Spain is when other drivers fail to use their indicators. In Spain, failing to indicate is punishable by a 200 euro fine. It is important to remember that indicators are there in order to â&#x20AC;&#x153;indicateâ&#x20AC;? our intentions, and therefore must be used before any manoeuvre takes place, remember your driving school days, Mirror-Signal-Manoeuvre. Indicating after you have started to slow down of change direction does not give sufficient warning. Equally, it must be remembered that they donÂ´t give us priority over other road users. We must indicate whenever we intend to deviate from our course or direction. In other words, if we are going to turn or change lanes for example. On a roundabout we must signal our intention to leave the roundabout immediately after passing the exit before ours. Pulling out from a parking spot or changing lanes can allow other drivers to assess if they are able to safely alter their course, although caution must still be exercised. Overtaking is one of the most dangerous manoeuvres we can do, especially when the move involves invading the opposing lane. It is important to indicate our intentions to warn other road users who might be considering doing the same thing, especially more vulnerable road users such as motorbikes. Turning into or out of a minor road must always be indicated, whether left or right, in order to also advise other road users, including those we may not have seen, such as pedestrians and cyclists. Remember though, always indicate first and always remember that indicating does not give us a right to move, or change our priority on the road, it simply indicates our intentions to other road users.
