THE VETERANS of the emergency response to the massive fire that swept across Javea and Benitachell can probably walk into any bar in either town and find a host of drinks waiting for them – and still enjoy a cava breakfast on the house. The firefighters both local and those bussed in to take on the blaze threatening to destroy homes and property left dog-tired knowing they had won the day – and will probably have to report to medics next week suffering from repetitive strain injury after shaking so many hands. And while the ground troops – more than 500 in the land army – left to the applause of people grateful for their sterling efforts; those in the air should also be remembered for their bravery as they bombed the heart out of the fire. The police are on the trail of those responsible; such is the mood of local residents it is hoped officers of the law catch them first. No one has exactly suggested lynching them but several wags want them to play with the bulls at the next fiesta…possibly in shackle to even things up a bit. A big well done from RTN Towers to the voluntary firemen of Javea, those of the Civil Protection and the ISVH Bomberos de Balcon al Mar – the latter team is being shown a big thanks in the amounts being donated for new equipment. They´ll probably enjoy a pint or two as well!

Rat run protest VILLAMARTIN RESIDENTS fear speeding drivers using a quiet street as a short cut will cause a fatal accident. by Jack Troughton Householders say the street between the town and Playa Flamenca has become a rat run and are calling for the town hall to take action – but allege pleas have been ignored. They want action to be taken to make Villamartin’s Calle Otelo safer. President of the Residents Association Ron Burks said the current situation was “an accident waiting to happen.” He told RTN he had lodged a series of official requests since 2007 but Orihuela Town Hall had chosen to ignore them

– despite having evidence each was officially stamped as ‘received’, no response has been made. “It’s a ludicrous situation,“ said Ron. “And, before long, there will be a terrible accident.” He argues the only people who need to access the road are those who live or have holiday properties there, many of whom have children and pets. The Residents’ Association was successful in getting the speed limit lowered to 30 kph and signs were erected, but it reports drivers ignore the signs and continue to speed down the road, often at more than double the speed limit. And Ron explained it had become a great area of concern for residents and there have been “a few near misses” on the sharp bend due to excessive speed.

In addition young children are regular holiday visitors to the street and there are family pets; all at risk of “being injured or killed by these inconsiderate drivers”. Ron added: “I would welcome visitors from local political parties, the Policia Local and members of the Ayuntamiento to discuss what can be done to make the road safer. We want to do everything we can to avoid a tragedy that is waiting to happen”. And Lyn Baines said: Cars use this quiet, residential road as a rat run and residents are worried that a fatal accident will happen if something is not done to slow down vehicles. “They hope RTN can help them make their plight public, so that something can be done.”

The biggest fire on record swept across parts afternoon following an act of “environmental and public property and protected forested by Jack Troughton TWO COSTA Blanca communities united to fight the devastation and chaos of the massive blaze triggered by arsonists intent on spreading chaos. The biggest fire on record swept across parts of Javea and Benitachell from Sunday afternoon following an act of “environmental terrorism”, burning 820 hectares of private and public property and protected forested parkland. On the front line a small army of more than 500 firefighters battled to bring the flames under control on the ground, supported by up to 20 aircraft; seaplanes and helicopters bombarding the fire with water. And away from the action, volunteers were at a local school to help some of the 1,400 people evacuated from their homes; people prepared food and drinks for the firemen and the residents forced to flee – other volunteered accommodation in their homes. In Javea 16 urbanisations were cleared and in Benitachell, residents in certain areas were forced to leave their homes. It is feared 20 properties were lost and around 100 damaged in the Granadella area. The military was drafted in to help volunteer firemen, professionals, and forest fire specialists – Civil Protection units were mobilised and Guardia Civil, Local Police and the Red Cross were all needed in the lengthy battle. The fire was extinguished on Wednesday but ‘hot spots’ were still being monitored across the area as RTN went to press. The hunt is now on for those responsible for starting the original fires and the firebugs

Alan Lawton, the Commandant of the volunteer fire brigade ISVH Bomberos of Balcon al Mar, said his team of 16 were involved from the first “shout” when the alarm was sounded at the entrance to Cumbre del Sol in Benitachell. EMPTY Speaking on Tuesday morning, he said: “Since then we have been out for 28 hours. We are now on an official stand down...to be honest we are running on empty. “It has been so hot; inside our protective jackets it is like being inside an oven but that’s what we are trained for. “Looking at the whole thing, it has been totally exhausting but after around 10 hours you just go into overdrive and just keep going.” Javea has two volunteer brigades. SNOWSTORM “It was like a snowstorm as ashes fell,” said Terry and Eileen Saville, who were evacuated from their home at Cap Marti and stayed with friends. “As night fell we could see the flames getting nearer; it was very frightening. “There were gas bottles exploding in the darkness – an intense white light with a bright blue centre.” Benny and Eileen Davis were forced to leave their home near the Arenal as flames were just 50m away. Benny said: “It was absolute chaos with cars going

everywhere and the roundabouts and roads were choked. “It was like a disaster movie with where no one knows what is happening, a story of chaos and non-organisation. There was no information available from the town hall at that point on Sunday night.” And the President of the Valencia Government Ximo Puig visited the central command post of the fire and viewed the affected area from a helicopter, saying: “We are facing environmental terrorism; affecting the natural heritage of Valencia and the lives of many people.” Javea Mayor Jose Chulvi said the town had despaired at seeing the devastation of the fire. “In these terrible hours we have suffered a lot of pain but we have also seen examples of good work, effort and solidarity that we will never forget. “In the command post, a police car and a helicopter I was next to all the people who fought a truly devastating fire; my feelings towards them is genuine admiration and respect.” And he said he was “proud” how residents had worked together to overcome the tragedy. Bike theft prompts campaign A Costa Blanca town is striking back at bicycle thieves by launching a database of registered bikes, making it harder to resell stolen ones on the black market. by Caroline Tyszka A bicycle is stolen in Elche every four days, and, until now it has been very difficult for the authorities to identify if a rider genuinely owns their cycle or if it is one of the 100 stolen every year. The voluntary system requires owners to fill out a registration form, upload pictures if desired, and signing a declaration of ownership. New Information Office The new Municipal Information Office serving El Campo de Guardamar residents was officially opened last Friday. Bogus doctor arrested POLICE HAVE arrested a man who had been practicing as a doctor despite having no formal medical qualifications. by Caroline Tyszka He acted as a specialised doctor at a clinic in Torrevieja. Officers were alerted to the situation following complaints to the authorities from patients who felt they had not been treated correctly. During the investigation, detectives inspected the facility where they discovered equipment needed for a medical practice. However, the practice and its areas of expertise were not registered with the relevant agencies in Valencia as a practice. The clinic, tucked away on a remote urbanisation where most of the residents are British, was immediately closed and the man posing as a doctor was arrested. Officers found the accused had no formal qualifications to practice medicine and the case is now with the judicial authority of Torrevieja.

Gored in bull run Young bull runner Jose Angel Lopez - known as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Chichiâ&#x20AC;? and something of an expert - was injured during the third bull run at the Feria del Arroz de Calasparra. Lopez was caught by the bull whilst trying to jump behind the safety fence. As he made for the fence, the chasing bull caught him in the leg with its horn. According to witnesses, the young man was gored in the outer side of the leg along the calf. He was taken for treatment and although there was significant muscle damage and the bone was exposed, there was no fracture.

Volleyball murder trial by Rhiannan Bell THE MURDER trial of the alleged killers of a Dutch volleyball player and her partner is scheduled to start on Wednesday 28th of September – with witnesses giving evidence from Holland via a live video link. Sportswoman Ingrid Visser and boyfriend Lodewijk Severein are said to have been kidnapped, tortured and killed over a row over business. Ingrid and Lodewijk vanished shortly after checking into a hotel in the city of Murcia on 13th May, 2013. They were supposed to meet a

doctor the next day, but when they failed to turn up for the appointment the authorities were alerted. The couple´s rental car was found in a city street more than a week later. And the bodies were found buried in a shallow grave in a lemon grove two weeks after they disappeared. Prosecutors will allege Ingrid and Lodewijk were abducted and tortured prior to being killed. Spanish police later arrested Juan Cuenca Lorente, ex-director of the volleyball club CAV Murcia, and Romanian nationals Valentin Ion and Constatin Stan for the murders. The police stated that there were “certain business disagreements” between the murdered couple and the three suspects.

EMERGENCY SERVICES worked overtime after a succession of wildfires struck along the Costa Blanca this week – police reporting “the hand of man” played a role in setting fires. by Jack Troughton

At one time “out of control” the huge blaze engulfing the holiday resorts of Javea and Benitachell made international news but the sky was filled with smoke in other communities and beauty spots. Fires on the Sierra de Bernia, Gata de Gorgos, on the mountains near Lliber and at La Nucia, all served as a timely reminder for people to take care in the tinder-dry countryside, again suffering a severe drought. The worst of these started near Bolulla on Monday night and destroyed some 600 hectares of the fragile mountainside of the Sierra de Bernia. Valencia government delegate Juan Carlos Moragues described it as “an ecological disaster”. Firefighters backed by air support managed to contain the flames within a perimeter stretching from Bolulla to Taberna, across to Callosa d’en Sarria and the hills above Jalon. The emergency response was helped as temperatures and the wind dropped during the night but 100 people were evacuated from some 40 properties during the alert. And the Guardia Civil believes the blaze was started in a case of “negligence or arson” as they investigate the cause. However, officers are also following up reports of a barbeque being lit near woodland.

Keeping a close watch Recycled art show NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH Spain held its Annual General Meeting – unusually one of two for the growing association – on Saturday underlining its determination to keep crime figures down. by Jack Troughton There are some 54 branches and some 60,000 members between Denia and Malaga and the national body hopes to keep raising its profile and links with the authorities to combat thefts and scams. And new President Adam Stone told local branch members: “What we are trying to do is get Neighbourhood Watch in every urbanisation and cut crime across Spain – everyone is doing a great job but we would like to hear more about how to assist you.” He admitted there was a communication problem between the central committee and individual branches – to enable the sharing of information from a local level to different areas. And he said: “We have to communicate to keep everything going... otherwise we are dead. Ideally every lead coordinator and coordinator should be in touch with the national association. “I would also like to see Neighbourhood Watch signs on every urbanisation, they really do reduce crime.” The meeting heard how there were still “many crimes and scams old and new happening everywhere” ranging from the opportunist thief to the professional criminal. SEASON As an example, the height of the tourist season sent crime “through the roof” – people forgetting the advice to remove car hire company stickers from their vehicles as they collected them. “What the sticker says is ‘I am a visitor...rob me’,” said press officer Scott Blair. “All we can advise is when people get the car; take the sticker off.” He said he needed information to pass on regarding crime in

general to raise publicity and help warn others. “Unfortunately, it sometimes seems either there’s no crime in Spain or people have forgotten to send me an email to say something has happened. “Neighbourhood Watch is really a warning system. Murcia Mayor José Ballesta and members of his government team on a walk along the embankment last Saturday to view the innovative art creations adorning the city’s bridges. The designs, all made from recycled items have been put together by local artists to bring life to the river as it passes through the heart of the city. Initially, the works were only to be displayed for the duration of the Murcia Fiesta celebrations. Machete mugging by Rhiannan Bell TWO ROBBERS armed with a machete have been arrested after attempting to mug a couple on their way to watch a sports match at Roquetas de Mar Sports Pavilion. The man and woman were approached by the two alleged robbers last month; one threatening them with the lethal weapon. The victims later reported to police that while they were walking to the stadium they saw a seemingly normal looking couple walking towards them. As they couples passed each other, the male pounced and held a machete to the man’s neck while the female accomplice screamed: “Give me what you have, give me the phone.” A struggle ensued and while the female victim ran off screaming for help, her partner managed to get the weapon from the attacker, although he received various wounds to his wrists during the scuffle. The two robbers ran from the scene. Following an investigation, the Guardia Civil arrested the alleged attackers aged 33 and 36, both residents of Roquetas de Mar.

MARTIAL ARTS expert and actor Jackie Chan is to receive a lifetime achievement Oscar from the all-powerful Academy by Jack Troughton The 62-year-old, once billed as the new Bruce Lee, has forged a successful Hollywood career for not only his Kung Fu moves but also an easy charm and comic style in a series of blockbusters. He is currently one of the favourite characters in the endearing series of Kung Fu Panda - he plays ‘Monkey’, one of the legendary ‘Furious Five’, helping Jack Black’s portly panda to glory. Born in Hong Kong, Chan made his movie debut at the age of eight. He has acted, sometimes written and directed more than 30 martial art firms in the former British colony. He currently stars in the science fiction action film ‘Bleeding Steel’ – which has gone into production in Australia and is currently billed as the biggest budget Chinese film ever shot there. Last month he was ranked the second-highest paid actor in the world with estimated 2016 earnings of US dollars 61 million, just behind ‘Fast and Furious’ star Dwayne Johnson. Also receiving a lifetime achievement award this November in the 2016 Governors Awards is documentary maker Frederick Wiseman; British film editor Anne V Coates; and casting director Lynn Stalmaster.

Racist Murder by Rhiannan Bell Man is behind bars after admitting killing his neighbour death in an alleged racist attack in Lorqui last week. According to the witness who called the police before the stabbing in Calle Quevedo de Lorquí, Jesus M B was outside the home of the victim, Abdelatif A, shouting and threatening him from the street. As tensions escalated, it is alleged the aggressor broke down the front door to the house and entered the property, stabbing the victim several times with a carving knife. Police say the pair were involved in a dispute between neighbours which got out of control. The suspect was arrested shortly after the incident and the weapon retrieved as evidence. He awaits trial for murder.

Sports Orihuela Orihuela’s Councillor for Sport, Dámaso Aparicio, has announced that the registration period for the Municipal Sports Classes is now open for the 2016-2017 season. The number of scholarships available has been doubled this year to thirty so that families without available funds also have the opportunity to take part in activities on offer. In total there are 1,287 places available for children in a variety of sporting disciplines including football, basketball, handball, athletics, gymnastics, swimming and tennis. Aparicio added that further information can be found on the City’s website and that he hopes to increase on last year’s intake of 960 children who took advantage of the sports facilities.

Live Grenades Discovered The Bomb Disposal Team of Murcia’s Guardia Civil carried out two controlled explosions in the province of Albacete after munitions were discovered. by Rhiannan Bell In two separate incidents, the detonations were made after two hand grenades and 12 rockets were reported in two separate incidents in the municipalities of Mahora and Tobarra, respectively. Following initial investigations by the Guardia Civil, expert were called in to verify the explosive capacity of the objects and to make them safe. The grenades were reported by a man who had seen them in a box in a neighbour’s garden. Both contained explosive substances although only one still had the fuse intact. The rockets, packed together in a box, were found in the grounds of a country estate during a ‘cleanup’ and were in perfect condition.

Farewell to “holidays in peace” kids by Caroline Tyszka A HOLIDAY scheme to help Saharawi children enjoy a break from their refugee camps has said farewell to this year’s guests with a party. The Department of Social Welfare in Alfaz del Pi organised the party at the town´s sports centre for the visiting children and their host families. The “holidays in peace” programme helps hundreds of children from the camps spend July and August with families throughout Spain. Locally 12 children, between the ages of 8 and

13, were taken in by families from Alfaz del Pi, Altea and Benidorm. Organised by the Expedition Association Juita-Friends of the Saharawi people of the Marina Baixa the president, Quim Sanblancat, attended to personally thank all the families who had helped enrich the young children’s life over the summer period. Members of the Alfaz del Pi council were also present and Councillor for Social Welfare, Vicenta Baldo highlighted the recently renewed agreement with the association for giving 6,000€ to help with the visually impaired children in the refugee camps in Tindouf. “It is a project for school integration of blind and visually impaired children with the help of the Municipality of L’Alfas del Pi in past years and in the future, first with the construction of the school and later with maintenance,” he explained.

From White Baos, we initiated a legal claim against the bank, claiming for the deposit paid by our clients, plus interest (which in these cases can reach a very high amount, almost half of the amount paid) and the legal costs, etc. So, again, the Court Number 4 of the town of Totana, in Murcia, in its judgment 41 of 2016, declared as stated in our claim, than according to the law 57/68 and majority jurisprudence, and especially the recent court precedents from the Supreme Court of Spain, as the judgment of the First Section of this Supreme Court dated on the 21th of December 2015, that the bankâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s responsibility is evident, since this entity had not only opened in the name of the developer the special bank account where customers paid the deposits and their payments on account of the final prices, and therefore the bank must check that the money paid by buyers was guaranteed by the developer through a bank guarantee or an insurance policy, but also, this bank approved a general bank guarantee line for this development. The court thus, agreed fully with the claim and ordered the bank to refund the amount claimed by buyers, plus interest and costs, even if our customers had not been given either by the bank or by the promoter, any individual guarantee for paid by them. Also in this case, the bank has not appealed the court decision, which is now definitive, and the principal of the claim has been already paid back by the bank, leaving only pending that the court states the exact interests and costs that the bank must pay also to our clients. How low can deposit account rates go? They are already too low is the answer if you look at the rates currently being offered on UK and Spanish deposit accounts, they are not even keeping up with inflation. So to put it bluntly if you place your money in a deposit account to generate income you are already losing money before you take any income and if you put it there for growth, you have no chance. UK banks are slashing their rates even as I write this article, • The rate on Santander UK’s famous 1-2-3 current account will drop from 3% to 1.5%, on balances up to 20,000 pounds from November and increase account charges. • Barclays Plc has cut its rate on its flagship Everyday Saver account, which houses the majority of the lender’s savings deposits, to a flat rate of 0.25% from August and this is set to fall further to just 0.05% on all balances from December. • HSBC Holdings Plc is slashing the rate on its Easy Access ISAs from 1.30% to 0.90% from Sept. 29 while bonus rates on the Online Bonus Saver — as a reward for not making a withdrawal — are being cut to 0.15-0.25% in the second year, from 0.25-0.50%. • Lloyds Banking Group and Halifax have cut the rate on the Easy Saver account by 10 basis points (bps) to 0.25%. • From the end of October, Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc’s flagship NatWest Instant Saver account will offer 0.01% interest. • Finally, TSB Banking Group Plc and Virgin Money Holdings UK Plc have also announced rate cuts with the former’s fixed-rate accounts lower by 25 bps, and the latter’s easy-access variable savings products cut by 20-26 bps. With the Banks offering you so little interest or even no interest on your money now and for the foreseeable future and inflation rising there has never been a better time to invest if you want the potential for growth.

Band’s last stand THE ROMMY Baker Big Band is reforming for a charity party Saturday 24th September – and possibly its final public performance. by Jack Troughton The band reunited last February to recreate the swing era for a concert in memory of founder Rommy who died in 2015. Such was the demand for tickets for the sell-out show, the band played again the following month for fans unable to attend the original gig. And now the band has been persuaded to get together again for a final show in the picturesque grounds of the Sanatorio de Fontilles, in the Val de Laguar, near Orba. Deputy leader Dave Bullock will guide the musicians through a programme packed with the best of the great swing bands of the forties and fifties; including Count Basie, Glen Miller, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, and Stan Kenton. The band is starring at ‘Herbstfest, an open air charity event including the typical ingredients of a German festival including beer and wine at 1€, wonderful sausages at 2€, and other cakes and goodies. The party starts at 4pm and the band is scheduled to take to the stage at 5pm. Tickets are 10€, available on the day or in advance by calling Ilse on 96 578 8840. Fontilles was built as a centre for the treatment of leprosy patients and remains a training centre for doctors and nurses who hope to work overseas; it is also home to a hospital.

Kenny, my horoscope last week was a joy to read, it seemed to be speaking just to me, and it made me realise that I now have to get on with things rather than sit and wait for change to come into my life. The reason that all horoscopes are different is because the interpretation is always up to the Astrologer. Not responding Hi Aunty, Every time I single click or double click onto a file or folder I get a notification ‘not responding’ and a small blue circle appears. It takes time before the circle disappears and the file or folder opens. It is extremely frustrating having to wait and if I have a list of items to add or delete in various files it takes a long time before I have finished. Have you any advice you can give me to stop this time wasting? Thanking you Hugh

Response: A bit tricky to diagnose accurately without knowing what operating system you are having the issue on, so I will assume a Windows system. These issues can happen for a number of reasons. The main one is a corrupt system file somewhere. You can correct this by booting into safe mode, going to Command Prompt for Administrators and running the System File Check by running the command : sfc /scannow This will check the system files and attempt to correct them automatically. It may also be an issue with the default program you are trying to use to open a file. It may also be an issue with your “menu” system. Some programs add items to your “right click” menu system, and some of them may not be compatible. So your “not responding” could be an issue with an recently added program.

The garden is mightier than the pen DICK HANDSCOMBE has laid down his pen after nearly a decade of writing gardening features for RTN – but his love affair with the great outdoors continues. by Jack Troughton He has played a key part in a series of books advising on how to get the best from gardens – even if they are on apartment terraces – including how to have a ‘waterless’ garden, and how to enjoy harvests of healthy fruit and vegetables. However, with his 80th birthday approaching, Spain’s bestknown expatriate gardener has decided to throw off the chains of newspaper deadlines and publishers’ timetables. Dick will continue as a guest speaker for various groups along the coast but intends to enjoy his own garden in La Drova, inland from Gandia, about to come alive after the heat of the summer. “My first garden book was for the Costa Blanca News after we walked across Spain in June and August 1998; after that we started writing articles around gardening, travel and recipes,” he said. “I didn’t intend to start writing because I wanted to do a natural medicine course but Geoff Gartland, the former owner of RTN, called and invited me to the office. That was a week after my 70th birthday and we started writing solely about gardening for RTN. “Every now and then there was a totally new idea; like using succulents for window boxes rather than traditional geraniums.” WILDLIFE He said even people with just a “lovely terrace” can sit out and enjoy nature and tempt wildlife into the garden. “In my garden I have several shaded areas to sit in out of the sun and enjoy wildlife – up here in La Drova there is about 50 different species of birds that visit regularly.” Birdsong is never far away, Dick has an aviary with a number brightly coloured breeding pairs and a new project is given space in two nearby hutches – home to Belgium Giant rabbits. The giant bunnies grow to be up to 12.5kg in weight and were popular in the war to breed and beat meat rationing. “I decided having a couple might be fun – the buck and doe actually got together before they were meant to and there’s already a growing family. They are more interesting to me than a cat or a dog.” Dick added: “I also thought I would start to paint. I have been on art courses but totally messed up with all the travelling, working on my plot, and writing for 10 years.” He believes the best time for gardening or walking in Spain is the morning – also the best time for being creative and ‘retiring’ from writing will give more time to indulge in all his other hobbies.

Skip, who hosts a free day on the Costa Blanca on Saturday 15th October – a rescheduled date - to explain his philosophy, said: “All of us have experiences in life that flood our minds and bodies with stress. “Think about it, we have mental stress, emotional stress, physical stress, relationship stress, work stress, food stress, and drink stress…we are surrounded by stress; wow, isn’t that inspiring?” He said it was impossible to make stress vanish but there were ways of dealing with problem. “We all know that we’re not going to be able to cut the stress out of our lives but we can come up with strategies to deal with the stress. “Here’s a little winner that you can use the next time you feel yourself getting stressed. Remember, stress will age you faster than anything else and we literally poison ourselves in those moments.” Skip said when people were stressed they stopped breathing deep in their diaphragm and started taking short shallow breaths – starving the cells of their bodies of “good oxygen”, their most important nutrient. And he said when eating under stress, the foods being taken in were poisoned; even if they were healthy. “So what do we do?” he asked. “Stop what you’re doing and take a time out from stress. Simply take a few minutes and focus on breathing deeply into your belly.” Skip advised breathing in for a count of two; hold the air in for a count of eight, and slowly exhaling over a count of four. “Repeat this for a few minutes and notice the difference in how you feel. According to the Hollywood Reporter, James Corden is currently in talks with Sony to voice Peter Rabbit, one of Beatrix Potter’s most wellknown characters. James is from Hillingdon, London and found fame in the UK with sitcom ´Gavin & Stacey´ which he co-created, co-wrote and starred in for the BBC ´07- ´10, for which, by the way, he won the BAFTA Television Award for Best Comedy Performance. He is now storming the US hosting the late-night television talk show The Late Late Show with James Corden on CBS. James will be joined by Australian actress Rosa Byrne in the movie and the storyline is a ‘modern interpretation centring on the rivalry between mischievous young hopper Peter Rabbit and Mr. McGregor, a senior trying to keep a rabbit-free garden’. Nasty Mr McGregor! Katy Perry was born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson in Santa Barbara, California 31 years ago, and her parents Mary and Maurice were both Pentecostal pastors. She took the music world by storm in 2008 with massive global success ´I Kissed a Girl,´ which must have been quite an experience for mummy and daddy to deal with. Katy announced last week on her webpage that she has gone into partnership with Global Brands Group with her footwear collection that will include stilettos, sandals, pumps and sneakers. “It’s been a creative goal of mine to be a real contributor in the affordable fashion space, and launching a footwear collection felt like a natural first step for me.” Global released sketches of Katy’s line, and it shows a mix of sexy and whimsical, as well as one with a red race car theme. Michael J´s lesson in ´never giving up´ is inspirational! Michael J Fox is now 55 and for several reasons, is very popular in the acting world. When he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991, aged just 29, he waited till ´98 to disclose his illness and semi-retired in 2000 as the symptoms of the disease worsened. He has since become an advocate for research toward finding a cure, and on March 5, 2010, Sweden’s Karolinska Institutet gave him a honoris causa doctorate for his work in advocating a cure for Parkinson’s disease. In recent years he has popped up in various guises, and the entertainment world has embraced his willingness to step up to the plate. He recently did an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in behind his 17th Emmy nomination for his portrayal as the deliciously manipulative defence attorney Louis Canning in ´The Good Wife, ´ a hugely successful USTV show. He was quoted as saying “it’s funny because any representation of characters with disabilities on television tend to be overly sentimental, and I wanted to prove that disabled people can be a**holes too!” Wouldn´t it be great if he won the award! Believe it or not Bill Murray made his first film in 1976, and if you don’t look at the bottom line, see if you can guess correctly how many movies he´s made altogether … and its more than 50. Bill has long since been a fan of going up to everyday people, engaging them in conversation, and joining them in their daily lives. Martha’s Vineyard Airport is a public airport located in the middle of the island of Martha’s Vineyard , in Dukes County, Massachusetts, and last week Bill was waiting in the cafeteria for his connection, and clearly got a little peckish … and what did he do? He fancied a couple of chips and instead of buying some was caught on camera helping himself to a few off a guy’s plate before wandering off again. Don’t you just love him!

Agatha Christie was born in Torquay in 1890 and became one of the greatest crime novelists of all time, with ´Witness for the Prosecution´ one of her finest works. The book was turned into a film in 1957, starring Tyrone Power, Marlene Dietrich and Charles Laughton, and was directed by the great Billy Wilder. Ben Affleck has signed up to produce a re-make of the movie, which is to be written by Christopher Keyser in the company of the Agatha Christie estate. Matt Damon and Jennifer Todd have agreed be part of the production, but it is not stated which roles Affleck and these two actors will take. The story is set in 1920s London and centres around the murder of famous heiress Emily French, and has one of those endings you would never see coming … an Agatha Christie trademark. A thrilling thriller!

At the wake of my beloved husband‘s funeral, my sister asked me who the woman was leaving flowers on the grave. I didn’t know, and we returned to the graveside and read a card that said ‘you and I always x ’. I can’t tell you how I felt - it was like a punch to the stomach. It was enough that I had lost the man I loved, but to find out that there was possibly someone else in his life, has come as a great blow. How do I find out who she was?

I am not sure if you kept the card that accompanied the flowers, but it might give you the name of the Florist. If you are determined to find out the truth, there may be some clues in your husband’s personal effects. Otherwise then it might be an impossible task to find out who this woman was. I can understand how wretched you must feel, and I would urge you to seek some counselling to help you come to terms with this discovery.

No going back I had long suspected that my grand-daughters were frightened of their father, and once raised it with my daughter who said he was just being strict when the girls needed it. However, I had seen bruises on the youngest girl’s arm, and she came crying to me and said her father had hit her, hard. I am afraid I snapped and reported my son-inlaw to Social Services. The girls were taken into care briefly, and my son-in-law now lives elsewhere. I am no longer welcome in my daughter’s house and she blames me.

To this day I wonder whether I did the right thing. Abuse shouldn’t be tolerated under any circumstances. Time is a great healer, and perhaps your daughter will come around, or your grand-daughters, once grown up may contact

you again. It was a very brave thing for you to do, but you cannot reproach yourself for it. Sadly, you have paid the ultimate price and have now lost your daughter and her family, but we all know what the worst case scenario could have been, if you hadn’t spoken out.

Horse centre backs supporter A ROJALES horse rescue charity is helping a valued supporter over the jumps with the town hall after being promised further cash donations. by Jack Troughton The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre is battling a critical cash flow crisis after being hit with vets bills and gratefully received 500€ from Asociacion Ecovida. And now the equine charity is backing the association’s plans for a network of clothing collection bins through the area. If given a green light, Ecovida has “vowed” to continue backing the centre and other charities. The donation came at a critical time for the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre it needs 4,600€ to pay bills for two horses that fell ill last month and needed to be hospitalised. Sadly, both mares died. “We are so grateful to receive this donation because we are really struggling right now,” said rescue centre co-founder Sue Weeding. “We will use the 500€ to start paying off the large debt we owe Alicante horse hospital.” CARE The centre manages to find the 4,000€ needed each week to care for 96 horses, ponies and donkeys rescued from across Alicante, through its network of charity shops and from donations. However, any unexpected bill can put the centre under extreme financial pressure, so the team is always “delighted” to receive a donation. “It would be marvellous if we get the Asociacion Ecovida bins in our area because it will help us and other charities in the future,” said Sue. “We consider ourselves lucky to be based in Rojales, where we have the support of such a wonderful council and group of councillors – some of which we have known for years now and who have shown us nothing but help and support. Bicycle Tracking by Rhiannan Bell Elche City Council will be introducing a registration system to log details of bicycles throughout the municipality over the coming weeks which will aid the local police in the identification of lost or stolen bikes and help return them to owners. Every year in the city, there are over a hundred reports of bicycle theft and the council hope the new measures will help to reduce the number stolen. The system being adopted in Elche is Biciregistro, a voluntary national tool, already utilised by other municipalities and is in collaboration with the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT). To join Biciregistro, log on to the website, complete a form and up-load photos of the bicycle being registered. There is a 7€ fee for an ID card and special stickers which can be put on the bike to help quickly identify it.

Ways of talking about the future Those people who learn Spanish in a grammatical, mechanical kind of way, tend to learn the “future simple tense” (more of which later) and then think they have talking about the future all sewn up and sorted out. If only it were that easy! Of course the “future simple tense” is a useful tool to have in our linguistic toolbox, but it is not always the most accurate one. To put it another way, it would be like someone speaking English like this: “Tomorrow I will go to Murcia and I will have some lunch. Then I will go for a walk. In the evening I will watch Coronation Street”. It gets the message across, but it does sound rather wooden! So, there are various ways of talking about the future, and this is what we are going

to explore for the next few articles. Way back at the beginning of this whole series I introduced a construction which is probably the most useful one to use to discuss our future plans. I call this the “future of intention” and it simply consists of the verb “ir” in the present tense, followed by “a” followed by the infinitive of another verb. So, in the first person this is “voy a” (translated as I’m going to”) “Voy a comer” (I’m going to eat, or I’m going to have lunch”) “Voy a estudiar español” (I’m going to study Spanish). These are our plans and intentions. If we change “voy” to the second person “vas” we can ask about other people’s plans and intentions. “¿Qué vas a hacer?” (What are you going to do?) This is a tricky one to pick up when spoken as it will sound like this: “Kevasathair”. Actually, it’s even

worse if it’s said to you in the (usted) polite form ¿Qué va a hacer?” This sounds like “Kevathair”. When it’s said with an Andalucian or South American accent (amongst others) when the “th” sound becomes a “s” sound. As South Americans more often use the “usted” form, that gives us “Kevasair”. However, the way I have represented the sound of the final “er” as “air” is not really accurate, it’s just the nearest English written equivalent. It’s a shorter Spanish “e” sound with the light “r” at the end. Perhaps “Kevasé” is a closer representation of the real sound.

Sorry, I didn’t set out to frighten you with this article, but it looks as though that’s what I might be doing. Almost everybody I speak to about learning Spanish tells me that understanding what they hear is by far the most difficult thing, and it’s really because of these kinds of problems. You might read “¿Qué va a hacer?”, understand it in its written form and even say it to considerable success, but are you prepared to answer something that sounds more or less like “Kevasé”. Well anyway, I’ll leave you to think about that one, and get back to “talking about the future” next week!

IT DIDN’T bother me I was born out of wedlock. God’s boots! I was only a baby at the time – far too busy drying off & learning to breathe. Conceived in the back of the Ritz. Born at the height of the blitz. Hardly Tennyson, but a neat bit of doggerel to sum up my unplanned arrival.

Do you remember a terrific 60’s film called ‘The Professionals’ starring among others Lee Marvin & Ralph Bellamy? In one scene the Bellamy character delivers an insult to Marvin “You b*****d.” His reply “Yes, Sir. In my case an accident of birth. But you, Sir, you’re a self-made man.” We know a Bellamy or two over here – don’t we?” (Apologies if your name is Bellamy, I’m sure you’re a saintly soul). In 1940’s Blighty having a bairn out of wedlock, (6½%) compared to now (56½%) was practically deemed a ducking stool offence – now it’s almost a prerequisite. By the same token austerity has a totally different interpretation now. Protesters railing against so-called poverty - “Ok -yah! Tory scum! OMG got to dash, got tickets for Coldplay” - are about as subversive as a fondue set. Mind you, one 1950’s pea-souper of a morning aged 15½, I woke full of communist zeal – ready to bring out the tumbrils for the bourgeoisie. However, that afternoon I got my first paying job (£1.9s.6d. per week). I bought an electric blue Teddy Boy drape jacket & suddenly I’m a dapper dandy capitalist. Fifties austerity wasn’t quite as Dickensian as some portray. Yes! there was Cold War Russia, rationing & rickets, but there was also – praise be - Rock ‘n’ Roll – although I never really took to Bill Haley & his daft kiss curl. He was 30ish when he made ‘Rock Around The Clock’ but he looked like our middle aged woodwork teacher. How did we survive without the now ubiquitous Health & Safety Diktats? We spent so much time outdoors roaming hither, thither & yon. With my best mate Barry, exploring a bomb-site, we found bullets – uh-oh! We took them back to my place and before I could stop him, Bazza chucked the lot onto a blazing coal fire. Creamy Chicken Lasagne This is a delicious twist on the classic Italian beef lasagne. Sheets of pasta are layered with a creamy chicken sauce, tomato sauce and mozzarella. Enjoy with garlic bread and/or a side salad. Ingredients Serves: 6 3 skinless, boneless chicken breast fillets 6 lasagne sheets 1 cube chicken stock 4 tablespoons hot water 225g cream cheese, softened 225g grated mozzarella cheese 750g tomato based pasta sauce Method Prep:25min â&#x20AC;ş Cook:1hr5min Ready in:1hr30min 1. Place chicken in a saucepan with enough water to cover and bring to the boil.

Cook for 20 minutes or until no longer pink and juices run clear. Remove from saucepan and shred. 2. Preheat oven to 180 C / Gas 4. Dissolve the stock cube in hot water. In a large bowl, mix the chicken with the stock, cream cheese and 1/2 of the mozzarella cheese. 3. Spread 1/3 of pasta sauce in the bottom of a 20x30cm baking dish. Cover with the chicken mixture and top with 3 lasagne sheets; repeat. Top with remaining sauce and sprinkle with remaining mozzarella cheese. 4. Bake for 45 minutes in the preheated oven.

Fire hazard removed ORIHUELA COUNCIL has begun removing 1,200 dry pines on the San Miguel del Monte to avoid the risk of fire. When a tumour appears in the prostate PSA production is uncontrolled and increases its concentration in blood. It is considered a risk when PSA if greater than 10 ng / mL. When the PSA is between 4 and 10 ng / mL studies are recommended to investigate why it is high, without suspecting prostate cancer. The PSA test is also used to detect other prostate diseases such as benign prostatic hyperplasia or prostate infection (prostatitis). The PSA analysis test is easy to perform and non-invasive, it is a simple blood analysis. The results should be interpreted

with caution. To receive a negative test result “indicates that it is highly unlikely that a person has prostate cancer, although the reliability is not 100%. Therefore, it is recommended to repeat the test every two years and consult a doctor if you feel any discomfort, “says the specialist.

The break gives us a chance to look back at this Season’s Fantasy so far.There was a flurry of Transfers last week as most teams tried to improve their Squads before the Transfer window closed. Javea Green Bowls Club has just finished hosting The Taylor Trophy in memory of Elaine Taylor by patricia thompson It is very different to other bowls club competitions in that it is played at some part under flood light conditions. This competition starts at 19:00 hrs until approximately 22:00 hrs so the competitors can appreciate cooler playing conditions as well as experiencing playing in a different environment. All teams played 2 matches each per Monday night and consisted playing 10 ends for each match. After the first match was completed, the atmosphere was charged up with the provision of a BBQ and refreshments. The competition takes place on a Monday evening over a period of 6 weeks and commenced this year on the 04th July and finished on the 29th August. This year 10 teams competed against each other in a bid to win this worthy Trophy. During the initial stages of this competition, team Full English who were the last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s winners took an early lead, however, team Mixed Bunch caught up and pulled ahead and won this years trophy with a comfortable score of 32 points. They won 16 out of the 18 matches they played. The winners from team Mixed Bunch consisted of Alan and Jan Philips, Derek and Lynne Elden, Greg Sperring and Adam Lambert. A big well done to them. The photo shows 4 members of Team Mixed Bunch. Team Summer Days came a surprise second, with a score of 21 points and only 1 point ahead of Team Full English. The Summer Days team consisted of Richard and Christine Day, Phil Barr, Dave and Yvonne Carvath, Steve Lilley and the late Elaine Taylorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Husband Brian Taylor. Team Full English came a close third with 20 points and this team consisted of Clive English, Chris Evans, Bill and Maureen Barrie and Dave and Yvonne Browne. The group loves to sing in barbershop style and works hard to learn and develop new skills, blending chords and ringing out overtones. The friendly and welcoming Pilarmonics makes instruments of the human voice and making incredible music and invites people to Wednesday evening rehearsals between 6.45pm and 9.15pm at the Pilar de la Horadada Christian Community Church, opposite the cinema. And the group is also keen to attract sponsors as a competition chorus and members of the Narional Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers. It needs essentials such as sheet music, ‘teach tracks’, and regular coaching from experts. The biggest ‘need’ at present are stage risers – graduated steps for members to sing from – which is how the group presents itself to audiences; just two would be beneficial. Seat Toledo

I’ve been doing this long enough to know whether I like a car or not pretty much immediately. A bit like tasting a good meal, all the senses are relatively alert (even more so if my daughters allow me a good night’s sleep) and the decision is quick in coming.

And so as I slide into the driver’s seat of the Seat Toledo I can tell you that I instantly like this saloon. Why? First and foremost because the seat is hard and supportive and easy to operate to ensure that it is in exactly the right position. The steering wheel is also in the correct position for me in terms of both height and distance away. While this really is key in ensuring that the driver feels confident, an uncluttered easy to navigate dashboard is a necessity for me. And again Seat scores highly here. I don’t have to sit and scratch my head for 10 minutes to work out how to start the engine or demist the windscreen. Simply put the key in the ignition and turn while your foot is on the clutch. There’s a traditional handbrake, too. It is home to a potentially complicated media centre incorporating satellite navigation and digital radio but is pleasantly easy to operate. This is refreshing because when I was in a Jeep the other week I really did feel lost for sometime before discovering where certain controls could be found. I am surprised how simple this vehicle is. And I like it. What also appeals very much is the frugal 1.6 TDi engine. It is claimed to return 67.3mpg while emitting 109g/km. This

Seat is an ideal company or family car. Its sleek modern lines are appealing and it is large enough for a family of five. That boot is a good size, too. I like the ski hatch for those awkward longer items like curtain poles or for allowing access to the boot for rear passengers, while driving. The cabin with its black cloth interior is a bit bland and could do with a glass sunroof to lift the light levels as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz For me the Toledo is a great driver’s car, it is responsive, hitting 60mph from standstill in a respectable 10 seconds and will go on to 125mph. I am surprised that there is only a five speed manual gearbox but that’s only because every other manufacturer these days provides a six-speed. If it’s unnecessary and is not going to improve economy then there’s no need for it. And that’s very much the ethos of the Toledo, I feel. Seat could have gone overboard on the vanity goodies it included in this package but they haven’t. For instance, there’s no reversing camera or welcome home lighting

when you open the door at night. There are parking sensors, which are helpful. And the high levels of equipment that are included are important and useful. For example, there’s a tyre pressure monitor and tiredness recognition system. It comes with 17-inch Dynamic alloy wheels and rain sensing windscreen wipers, too. With its sporty hard suspension and decent engine the Toledo is a joy to Facts at a glance drive.
