PEOPLE AROUND the world are answering an emergency ‘SOS’ – ‘save our shelter’ - to help a Costa Blanca animal shelter fighting for survival after being starved of public funding. Animal lovers as far away as Russia and the United States of America are flocking to sign an electronic petition calling for a town hall to fulfil its legal contractual commitments. More than 207,000€ is owed to the home. And SPAMA La Safor, a Spanish animal home operating for over 30 years after being founded by two vets, faces closure unless Gandia Town Hall releases money. It has received nothing from the local authority for two years. Volunteer Margaret Snowden has launched the petition in a bid to get public support for SPAMA and convince Mayor Arturo Torro he has a contractual duty of care to the shelter and the animals – currently around 150 dogs and over 100 cats.
She said the debt was more than 207,400€ and “mounting” but despite repeated promises no money had been received from the town hall. Margaret, who has three dogs included Rocky – who was rescued from a bin with three siblings - said the shelter was Spanish run and operated a ‘no kill’ policy for the animals, many given a second chance by being adopted. She said hundreds of abandoned animals received “excellent” veterinary treatment, kennels were kept cleaned and dogs were walked daily and were “beautifully cared for”. But Margaret told RTN: “As from 1st December no more strays can be collected, there’s absolutely no money. “Two members of permanent staff have had to be made redundant because there’s no money to pay them. The shelter is exceptionally well run and it is manned 24 hours a day.” Continued on page 8

TEMPORARY MEASURES are being put in place to allow pedestrians more comfortable access along the Paseo at Los Locos after stairs and ramps were destroyed in bad weather last Friday, after which around 40 metres of the walkway had to be closed to the public. Now the extent of the damage can be seen more clearly and several residents turned out to view the area and take pictures. There are places where sea, sand and rock have encroached upon the walkways and much of
the beach has disappeared. Paved areas are split across large sections exposing wiring and pipework. Councillor for Beaches and Urban Development Paco Moreno said: “The priority is to restore the walkway and the balustrade and make the area safe for pedestrians.” Much of the beach has already been cleared although it will take some time for the sandy area to return to normal. In the meantime it may be necessary for artificial sand to be installed until the beach recovers. Restoration work is likely to last for several weeks.

FIRE BROKE out in the engine cavity of a small boat in Torrevieja last Monday in the Puerto Deportivo Marina Internacional de Torrevieja at around 3.15pm. Despite the blaze being quickly put out with a fire extinguisher the Fire Department, Police and a naval patrol vessel were all called out to deal with the emergency. Still – better safe than sorry!

Santa Claus is coming to town
The annual ‘Toy Run’
by Jack Troughton CHRISTMAS COMES early for dozens of excited youngsters on Sunday 21st December when a host of bikers in Santa outfits make a special delivery of presents. The annual ‘Toy Run’ by members of the Costa Blanca Espana Biker Group take presents to delighted children cared for in EMAUS homes. And the streets of Albir, Benidorm and Alfaz del Pi will echo to the distinctive rumble of iconic Harley Davidson machines – around 100 took part 12 months ago. The sight of this column of motorcycles and their police escort has become one of the festive season’s most memorable events with people travelling to the area for a unique photo opportunity.
Roads become a sea of red and white as the riders pass by – costumes are obligatory for those taking part – and many of the bikes sport seasonal decorations. Spectators are guaranteed an inner glow as Christmas spirit is released into the atmosphere from the exhausts of the Harley Davidson’s and RTN will once again be recording the action. The bikers from across the region rendezvous at McDonalds Restaurant in Albir from 8.45am on Sunday morning. At 9.15am the procession leaves for Albir Beach and travels into Benidorm. From 10.15am the motorbikes travel along the Poniente Beach, through the Old Town to the Town Hall and continue long the Levante Beach, heading back to Alfaz and are scheduled to be at the town’s Casa de Cultura for 11.45am.
A crisp and sunny Christmas ANTI-CYCLONIC CONDITIONS in the coastal regions of the Costa Blanca are creating a marked difference in temperature between day and night. Throughout the next two weeks daily temperatures of between 15º and 18º will drop to a chilly 7º - 10º in the evenings although we can expect mostly sunny days according to the Meteorological Agency. For the time being, Christmas Day and Boxing Day are forecast to be sunny with a moderate daytime temperature of around 12º dropping to 5º at night – so be sure to give bed socks for Christmas! Airport taxis to be scanned A LICENSE plate reader has been put into action at Alicante-Elche International Airport to control the intrusion of foreign taxis operating illegally. by Jan Gamm The reader was installed on Tuesday on a trial period. The councillor for transportation for Elche, Justino Delgado, confirmed that the device has been introduced to control the access of taxis either registered outside Elche or operating illegally without a license. He said: “This meas-
ure will enable rigorous and effective regulatory controls to comply with regulations that limit taxis registered outside Elche to six trips per month.” This reader looks similar to a camcorder and is connected to the local police in Elche. When it detects that a taxi outside the town of Elche has entered more than six times in a month, the police will take action.
24-HOUR STRIKE The license plate reader has become a reality as a result of the 24hour walk-out staged by Elche taxi drivers in March. This forced the hand of local and regional governments, leading to the introduction of a series of measures including an increased police patrol to monitor illegal vehicles.

HOLLYWOOD DIRECTOR Ridley Scott has criticised Spain for closing the Cuidad de la Luz in Alicante (the ‘City of Light’), which he describes as “one of the world’s finest film studios.” The 77-year-old says he cannot understand the thinking behind the closure of the studios when so many top money projects in London cannot find suitable studio facilities. “It makes no sense,” he said, “…you could pay the bills if it was in operation – and if it was in operation it would be full!” He said the studio should have been granted enough tax relief to keep it open. Scott is responsible for such blockbusters as ‘Gladiator’ and ‘Prometheus’.

Most politicians are not corrupt says Rajoy by Jan Gamm SPAIN’S PRIME Minister Mariano Rajoy has told MPs that he believes most of Spain’s politicians are not corrupt! His remarks came just one day after Health Minister Ana Mato stepped down over corruption accusations. Rajoy went on to elaborate on his views on corrupt practices that he says “…hurt democracy and discredit Spain.” He added that he was deeply concerned about injustice and refuses to accept that
the suspicion of corruption spreads to all Spanish politicians, while announcing “stringent measures to tackle the problem.” ANA MATO 55-year-old Ana Mato resigned after a high court judge said he believed she had benefited personally from gifts as part of the so-called Gurtel scandal that rocked Spain more than five years ago. The fallout from the case continues to haunt politicians involved in the affair, in Mato’s case through her connection with her exhusband, ex-Senator Jesus Sepulveda, who was forced to resign his membership of the PP when he was named in the Gurtel case in 2013. Mato will be required to attend court but has not as yet been named as a suspect.

OPPOSITION Pedro Sanchez, leader of the Socialist opposition, contends that Mariano Rajoy is “in no position to lecture the rest of the country on the subject of corruption,” saying he is “…not able or legitimate to lead.” Possibly the worst political scandal to hit modern Spain is the Barcenas affair, involving allegations of a slush fund operated by former PP treasurer Luis Barcenas from which bonus payments were said to have been made to several senior PP figures – Mariano Rajoy was specifically named by Barcenas to have received cash payments. Last month Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy made a public apology to the country for cases of corruption that have come to light affecting his party.
TENS OF thousands of people took to the streets in more than 30 Spanish cities on Saturday as social groups convened unions, political parties and dozens of organisations in protest against the State Budget and the Government’s social and economic policies, declaring a ‘social emergency’ in Madrid, Barcelona, Santiago, Seville, Bilbao, Toledo, Badajoz, Avilés (Asturias), Valencia and Valladolid among many others. The slogan ‘Bread, work, housing: dignity’ was bannered throughout all the marches, collectively called the ‘Dignity Marches’ first organised in March of this year. Protestors were well organised and there were no incidents involving the police.

SPAIN WAS officially declared ‘Ebola free’ on Tuesday 2nd December as no new cases have come to light since Nurse Teresa Romero was announced free of the infection and discharged from hospital on 5th November. Staff who attended Nurse Romero during her stay in the Carlos III Hospital in Madrid underwent 21 days of active surveillance in accordance with Ministry of Health protocols.

MANY OF the ceramic poppies that were part of the Tower of London memorial Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red are being delivered to customers who paid ÂŁ25 for them (plus postage and packing) either chipped or in pieces. by Jan Gamm While most purchasers admit it would be impossible to deliver almost a million ceramic flowers in perfect condition, in some cases delivery personnel from the handling company Yodel were witnessed throwing the packages (some not marked Fragile) over fences and dropping them. Some of the flowers have pieces missing that are not in the box. Many who bought the flowers have lost relatives in military conflicts and have been affected emotionally by the arrival of a broken poppy in the post. A number of poppies were kept in reserve but in view of the large number of damaged flowers disappointed purchasers doubt there will be an adequate number of replacements available. Ebola vaccine passes its first test AN EXPERIMENTAL Ebola vaccine being developed in the US has successfully passed its first test on humans, generating an immune response to the disease without serious side effects in 20 volunteers, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The trial began in September at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the results are promising enough to conduct a larger scale study on thousands of participants in West Africa where the disease is raging. The medical trials were conducted in the Washington area under the direction of Dr Anthony Fauci of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. According to the World Health Organisation, 15,351 cases of Ebola have been detected since March of this year, 5,459 of which were fatal.
Police target paedophilia FIFTY POLICE officers in the province of Alicante have taken part in a course focusing on the prevention of the corruption of minors. The course, run by criminologists Rafael Fonseca and Javier Santos, featured new technology available to detect and track offending paedophiles. According to Fonseca potential offenders in Spain do not have a network of support available to conquer their perversion unlike other countries. He suggested there is a need to establish such programmes to achieve positive results in the fight against child abuse.

by Jan Gamm DISABLED CITIZENS are faced with considerable difficulties when trying to negotiate their way around Torrevieja and the Association of Parents of Students with Special Educational Needs organised a special ‘Jungle Walk’ through the city centre to illustrate just how hard it can be – and how easy it is to make it easier - to get around. THOUGHTLESS The obstacles are often simply a case
of thoughtless behaviour: cars parked across pedestrian crossings and in front of ramps for handicapped or disabled; double parking; vehicles parked on the pavements and pedestrian areas – and in some cases vehicles are even parked fully on the pedestrian walkway while the wheelchair–bound must brave the road! And the narrower the street, the worse the problem becomes. Mari Carmen Mora, secretary of APANEE, said: “We found no less than four cars obstructing access to crossings and ramps, which is actually an improve-
ment over previous years when there were several more, but it is still not acceptable. When ramps are obstructed, disabled pedestrians have no other means to get onto the pavement. It is simply a case of being considerate.” EARLY LEARNING The association is planning several lectures and workshops in different schools throughout 2015 to help raise awareness among youngsters, hoping to teach citizens how to be considerate to the disabled from an early age.

Animal lovers from as far away as Germany and Holland have been making donations of food and bedding. “Our volunteers are driving many miles to collect donations. It is winter here now, our animals need food, warmth, and access to medical treatment. This should not be happening – these animals are being denied the chance of a happy and loved life.” Some of the dogs have been abused before reaching the refuge and are cared for separately and given extra attention – others because of their suffering or medical issues will never be adopted but are given the run of the shelter and “cared for, for life”. Margaret said: “If any of the animals need one on one treatment, the vets take them to the clinic and keep them there – and they remain at the clinic until they are better and can be brought back to the shelter.” Unfortunately the uncertain future of SPAMA also threatens the animals themselves. Should the refuge close, if other shelters cannot offer a home, the dogs and cat face the notorious ‘killing stations’. Margaret said: “We cannot let that happen.” She added: “We really need the support of the public. If we lose SPAMA, we lose a haven for abandoned animals. We are really under threat of losing the shelter.” The protest is also going to be brought back into the centre of Gandia itself. At 11.30am on Saturday 20th December it is planned to stage a human chain from Paseo de las Germanias, through Calle Mayor to the town hall. by Jan Gamm SPAIN’S NEW Health Minister, 47-yearold Alfonso Alonso Aranegui, was sworn in on Wednesday, 3rd December during a brief midday audience with King Felipe at the Zarzuela Palace. Alonso, acknowledged as a favourite of Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Sáenz de
Santamaría, takes over as Health, Social Services & Equality Minister from Ana Mato, who stepped down from her post as Health Minister last week following reports that she was linked to the Gurtel case through her ex-husband. Mato had also been heavily criticised for her handling of Ebola cases in Spain. She eventually resigned her position on
26th November. Just hours later, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced his ‘new crusade’ against corruption amongst politicians. Alonso has been a parliamentary spokesman in the lower house since 2011. He faces the unenviable task of handling the fallout from Rajoy’s controversial health policies and spending cuts.
SCOTTISH WHISKEY connoisseurs have had their noses put out of joint after renowned critic and writer of the ‘Whiskey Bible’ Jim Murray named a Japanese Single Malt as the World’s Number One whiskey. Suntory of Kyoto’s Yamazaki Single Malt Sherry Cask 2013 knocked its Scottish competitors off the top spot for the first time ever. Murray described the whiskey as having “…a nose of exquisite boldness…thick, dry and as rounded as a snooker ball.” Not only did a Japanese whiskey come out on top but second, third and fourth places went to three American bourbons and an English whiskey! Murray says it’s time for the Scottish distilleries stop resting on their laurels.
Voting deadline draws closer PEOPLE WANTING to vote in next May’s Municipal Elections across Alicante must register their intention to take part in the ballot by the deadline of 30th December, 2014. by Jack Troughton RESIDENT CITIZENS of the European Union, aged over 18, have the right in one town hall election in the province – but it is essential they have “expressed a willingness” to exercise their democratic right. Expats who have previously registered an intention to vote in previous elections and continue to live in Alicante maintain their status as ‘voters’ and have no need to complete a new declaration. The declaration is normally made at the town hall where people live and are registered on the ‘padron’ – the municipal register. STATEMENT However, to help the process, the Electoral
Census Office has written to 38,424 registered citizens in Alicante who have not voted in previous elections and have never expressed an intention to do so. They need only complete and sign a statement and return it to the provincial delegation of the office. In addition, those with a NIE identity number can make their declaration to get a vote online by accessing the website https://sede.ine.gob.es People not registered on the ‘padron’ or the electoral roll wishing to exercise their democratic rights should go to their local town hall to register and make their declaration on a standard form. More information can be provided at town halls, the provincial electoral Census Office, or by calling 901 101 900.

Passport pickle WE HAVE just found out why it costs so much to renew our passports from Spain. My wife and I put our old passports (with consecutive numbers) into a single envelope with the forms completed and paid for online. They were sent recorded delivery and arrived in three days at the Belfast Passport Office. I then checked on the Tracker as to what was happening. They were both being worked on after 5 days and the next we knew there was a phone call from the Courier saying he was at our house - we were out shopping! We met up later that day and signed for my wife’s passport only. I checked Tracker and mine was still being worked on. This was 15 days from sending them. Next day the Courier delivered my wife’s old pass port with the corner cut off. After 3 weeks my passport has arrived but not the old one. So it will have taken four visits from the courier and my new one runs out four weeks before my wife’s although worked on last. Guess we were lucky they turned up before we needed them at Christmas. Tax pain in Spain RE: TAX pain in Spain, I agree with your article recently about poor advice given to ex pats when they move to Spain. Confusing, misleading and conflicting, it leaves expats in a situation where they don’t know who to trust, as they are the ones who will be fined by the Hacienda if the declaration is wrong. If you approach four accountants, with the same figures and ask them to work out the income tax declaration, you will get four very different results: I know, I’ve tried it. So called experts may not know the implications of the double taxation treaty, the different types of pension and how they are taxed in Spain. With the arrival of the assets declaration there were reams of confusing information, with threats of a draconian nature for the smallest error. Hardly a way to encourage people to settle in Spain! One particular injustice is the way different regions are allowed to determine their own allowances for Inheritance tax. Murcia is an example of a region which has abolished its own allowance, leaving citizens with the paltry state allowance, which would be a drop in the ocean against the average inheritance bill. If, however, you lived in Andalucia, there is a very generous allowance - very little or no IHT to pay. Changes were made to the tax system this year, but disappointingly, though there was supposed to be a much needed overhaul to the very unfair Inheritance tax, nothing at all was done. We hear regions are short of money, but recently the Convenio Especial, made available in most regions, means that early retirees and non-working people of pre state pension age can receive the same care from the Spanish health service that others do, for a modest monthly fee. This is an excellent scheme, but it must come at a cost, as it covers all health conditions. If this can be afforded, so can a decent IHT allowance. The real answer is for central government to regulate inheritance tax. It is far too important for regional governments to make drastic changes at a whim, with devastating consequences for its citizens. Ellen Rose

Sales of Ouija boards have tripled since the release of the movie ‘Ouija’. The film follows the misfortunes of some folk who try to use the Ouija board to contact their dead friend but accidentally call on an ancient – and not very friendly – spirit. Despite the movie under-achieving on review sites it has inspired sales of Ouija boards to escalate at a rate of 300%. Barcelona the worst drivers in spain
by Jan Gamm A REPORT by kelisto.es on the standard of driving throughout the country has revealed that the worst drivers – that is to say drivers who habitually violate the speed limits, behave recklessly toward pedestrians and generally drive erratically – are found in Barcelona. Second on the leader board is Madrid, followed by Valencia. The best drivers are judged to reside in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Almeria and Caceres. The survey processed data from 50 pro-

vincial capitals and included a number of aspects that affect the standards of drivers, taking into account population density, traffic density and average weather conditions such as rainfall. The city with the highest traffic density in Spain is Madrid, with a total of 13,167,000 moving cars per kilometre per year, followed by Barcelona, with a total of 6.872 million vehicles and Valencia, with 6,670. Kelisto.es notes that in Spain, in 2013, 1,688 people died on the roads, an average of 32.4 deaths per city.

Last year the market raised 2,500€ which sponsored the building of latrines and showers in the town of Rukara, Rwanda.
Shopping by candlelight ALICANTE’S ASOCIACION Poeta Quintana held its first event entitled ‘La Noche en Vela’ (The Night of the Candles) this week when more than 70 local businesses took their products to the streets after dark in the city centre, using candles to light up the merchandise and draw in delighted customers. The atmosphere was both romantic and festive and shoppers found browsing more comfortable as the street was closed to traffic from 6pm until 10pm. The initiative is intended to give local trade a boost before Christmas. And there were plenty of bargains and discounts on offer - some customers were even offered free haircuts and makeovers! President of the association, Virginia Albero, said, “This is the first time that this type of promotion has been held in Alicante and we are very happy with the result – from now on we hope to hold a similar event every year.”

by Jan Gamm THIS CHRISTMAS the artichoke is taking a starring role on the menu as the Vega Baja scoops a fantastic ‘super crop’ weighing in at an incredible 20,000 tons. Nearly 1,600 hectares of artichokes were planted, up 5% on last year. This year the municipality of San Fulgencio was chosen to ceremoniously cut the first artichoke. The President of the Artichoke Association for Vega Baja del Segura, Diego Martinez, accompanied by the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Water Jose Ciscar and star chef Susi Diaz, all helped to snip the first artichoke. San Fulgencio Mayor Carlos Ramirez was also present. DELICACY The artichoke is plentiful in Spain, seen in enormous quantities in season in local gro-
cery shops and supermarkets. Elsewhere, however, an artichoke starter is considered a costly delicacy, low in fat, low in cholesterol rich in fibre and rumoured to be a reliable aphrodisiac! They are traditionally served with a butter-based sauce and salt. OUTSTANDING The recent rain and falling temperatures have helped to mature this outstanding winter crop and leading international export representing 50% of international artichoke sales overseas, boosting the Vega Baja as one of Spain’s top producing regions. Diego Martinez said: “We have a horizon full of opportunities. Agriculture is a strategic sector for the region and the artichoke should spearhead economic and job growth.” As Spain’s economic crisis begins to lift, the humble artichoke heralds prosperity and good fortune for the Vega Baja.
The Charamita charms Torrevieja HUNDREDS OF kids took part in the ‘Charamita’ on Monday – a ‘Parade of Giants’ where Lily, The Wolf and The Ogre are the stars in a colourful and tuneful parade around the city streets, accompanied by a troop of giant papier mache heads and children shouting and singing as they go! The parade was staged this year in the afternoon instead of during the morning to accommodate the timetables of some of the local schools. There were street stalls selling toys and gifts in preparation for Christmas, balloons and party masks as well as festoons of flowers and copious quantities of sweets!

Diabetes testing with Specsavers by Patricia Thompson THE TORREVIEJA Diabetics Association and Specsavers, with the support of the Lions Club, tested more than 300 people for Diabetes in just three hours on Friday 28th November. The free testing was medically supervised and conducted by a nurse with a simple finger-prick test to screen for pre-Diabetes and Diabetes, a condition affecting almost 400 million people worldwide. Three patients were referred to a medical practitioner for further tests and treatment due to the test results. The Diabetic Association also used the opportunity to raise awareness of the issues associated with diabetes and offer advice for preventing the condition. More than 70% of cases of Type 2 Diabetes cases can be prevented or delayed by adopting healthier lifestyles such as adopting a sensible diet and improving fitness levels. If not properly controlled Diabetes can cause blindness, heart attack, kidney failure and in severe cases amputation. Francisco Manuel Jurado Alonso from Specsavers in Torrevieja : “Diabetes affects the small blood vessels and capillaries of the body, including those at the back of the eye. Haemorrhages (blood leaking out of the vessels) and leaking fluid (edema) in the eye caused by diabetes is referred to as ‘Diabetic Retinopathy’ - it can also cause cataracts and retinal detachments. “The better the Diabetes is controlled, the less likely these issues are to occur. In order to avoid problems
with sight, it is important that blood sugar levels, blood pressure and cholesterol levels are controlled. Not all Diabetes causes sight loss, but it is important to have regular screenings and eye tests so that any problems or changes can be monitored. We recommend anyone with signs of Diabetes visits their doctor. Lost in translation PEOPLE SUFFERING bereavement or loss can be left upset by well-meaning messages of regret and support that sometimes miss the mark. by Jack Troughton Members of Stepping Stones – the Costa Blanca self-help group run by the Listeners charity – discussed how comments of people close to them could affect their lives at a time of grief. They accepted most felt sadness, sorrow, and even grief, and usually expressed their condolences with sympathy and understanding. However, some comments intended to convey regret and support did not come out the way intended and could cause a great deal of upset to the person bereaved or suffering a loss. Comments like ‘it was their time to go’, ‘you’ll be fine’, ‘you have to move on’ and ‘at least you’ve still got your health’, all struck a chord in the way they did nothing to ease a feeling of loneliness. BANTER Group members quickly struck back against such negativity and enjoyed some good humoured banter about some of the “meaningless platitudes” used in this context. Stepping Stones meets once a month at the El Cid Restaurant, Benidoleig, on the second Wednesday of the month between 10am and noon. Meeting are relaxed and informal. Refreshments are available. The next meeting is Wednesday 10th December. The group meets with a support team from the Listeners, a not for profit charity, used to dealing with challenges, including the loss of a loved one, through the 24 hour helpline on 96 599 6678. The STAR Christmas Concert Orihuela ONCE AGAIN Networks Theatre is organising STAR: a Charity Christmas Concert on Saturday 13th December at 7pm to raise money for ASOKA – CPA Orihuela, the Orihuela animal refuge in San Bartolomé. In total, 95% of the buses that serve Benidorm are now wheelchair friendly. On request the driver extends the automatic ramp from the central doors. Surgery success at Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre A NEGLECTED horse with crippling front hoof problems returned to the Centre this week after receiving lifesaving surgery in Barcelona. by Patricia Thompson Goldie was brought to the Rescue Centre last year with severe laminitis in both front feet, a painful condition caused in her case by years of neglect. She received ‘last chance’ surgery at the Equihealth Veterinarios clinic in Barcelona in October in a bid to prevent her having to be put to sleep. Centre founder Sue Weeding said, “She’s a lot more comfortable now - able to move freely without painkillers although she will always have to have special shoeing.” FRANKY Franky the donkey went in for specialist care on Monday, found in mid-November
with severely malformed hooves - his front left hoof has curved so far under that he is walking on the equivalent of his wrist! The Equihealth Veterinarios team will attempt corrective surgery to lengthen the back tendons of Franky`s front leg to help the hoof rotate to the correct position. The EHCRC welcomes all donations and sponsorships to help support their important work. Every single cent donated to EHCRC or spent in their eight charity shops across the Alicante province goes towards the feeding and care of the many horses, ponies and donkeys that live at the centre. Ensure you sow peas that please PEAS ARE easy to grow in Spain and need to be sown before Christmas to ensure good spring harvests. If planted no later than now you may well harvest fresh tasty peas during February in sheltered frost free spots. In colder windier spots it may be April or early May before you have major harvests. WHEN CHOOSING sweet peas your choice of variety will be based on colours, novelties of colours and length of stem for cuttings for vases. When choosing varieties of peas for eating you would be wise to consider whether they are early or late croppers, spreading plants shrub or climbing varieties, small petit pois, flat mange tout or large round varieties, delicate or firm bites, with sweet or blander tastes and whether you want to use them as firm peas on a plate, as mushy peas with fish and chips, or in empanadas (Spanish pasties) with onions and tuna for instance. Looking through seed catalogues there are four types of seed – new introductions; regular large scale commercial varieties; heirloom varieties which are reintroduced old varieties and heritage varieties that have never been sold commercially before. These days seed catalogues can be ordered by post or internet, studied on the internet, or studied in a garden
centre of agricultural cooperative. If you have the book ‘Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain’ you will find a long list of seed suppliers on page 129 who would be willing to send you a catalogue or who have an online catalogue. At the time of writing that book the Spanish seed company Madre Terra did not exist: we suggest you include it in your internet search for seeds. One good thing about peas is that you can grow them in rows supported by pea sticks in a vegetable plot, in raised beds, in builders’ buckets and even without supports but trailing in window boxes. If you enjoy cooking paellas, peas and broad beans can be used to replace fresh runner butter and haricot varieties of beans. The full recipes and problems to avoid, and how to do so, are fully explained in the book ‘Authentic
Valencia Paellas’. Interestingly this book was a best seller on Amazon in November. Perhaps more expats are to cook a paella on Christmas Day Spanish style, the Spanish meat fiesta dish having been cooked and eaten on Christmas eve, Noche Buena. Despite this being welcome news for families who like to walk their children and pets in the caterpillars’ favourite pine forest domain environmentalists
do not entirely approve of the government’s fumigation processes that include the use of hazardous material such as Diflubenzuron. They say that the pesticides being used do little to combat the problem yet do a great deal of harm to other healthy organisms that should be protected.

Capital Gains Tax in Spain for Citizens aged over 65 QUESTION: DEAR lawyers, I am a 65 year old Irish Citizen, and I intend to sell my property in Spain. I have heard that my age gives tax advantages in the amount of Capital Gains Tax payable on the sale. Is this true ? IN ARTICLE 33 4. B) of Law 35/2006 of Income Tax for Individuals, it stipulates: “ the gains as a consequence of “transfer of the habitual residence (home) by any person over 65 years old (meaning 65 or over) or people experiencing severe or high dependency” shall be exempt from capital gains tax, Therefore, you would pay no capital gains tax if you meet the following two requirements: i)That you are 65 years old or over at the time of transfer, or in this case, at the time of the sale, and ii)If the property sold is your main and habitual residence. You must be tax resident in Spain, the law says that “ the property would be deemed as habitual
residence….that in which the taxpayer resides for a continuous period of three years”, although some exceptions are allowed. As always, if you are going to sell your property, it’s is very important that you prepare all documentation and verify that you have everything in order to sell without problems. Also, for tax purposes it is essential to check that your property is registered as your main and habitual residence. However, it is worth noting that recent tax reforms approved by Law 26/2014, of 27 November, introduce some changes that affect people’s capital gains when they are 65 years old or over. The new Article 38.3, says: “any gain as a consequence of the transfer of

Charity4Charities excel yet again CHARITY4CHARITIES has excelled once again, raising funds for good causes on their 6th Annual Presentations Night held at the ‘Bull Flanagan’. Instead of live entertainment the evening featured table magic, and he was just that – magic! Age Concern, Debra, SAT, the Alzheimer’s Association. Caritas, Torrevieja Stroke Support Association, Neo Natal, Oncology, the Elche children’s home and finally Isaac House in Uganda were all presented with cheques to the value 1,000€ The raffle was drawn with winners taking home prizes and donations from the charity’s many supporters. CALENDAR Charity4Charities’ ‘Bare all 2015’ calendar has been such a success the printer has donated another 200 copies - so for all those who missed out, you can still purchase them at only 5€ each -all money raised will go to next year’s chosen charities. HELP out in Gandia
Smiles at the Franciscan shelter
By Jack Troughton VOLUNTEERS FROM Jalon Valley HELP visited Gandia to support two good causes in the community - the Franciscan Hostel which provides a shelter for homeless and terminally ill men and the youngsters cared for at the nearby Preventorio. The Brothers running the hostel were delighted to receive a donation of 2,000€ as it relies on gifts to make ends meet in the financial crisis. It is currently caring for 60 men. And HELP President Elaine Horton promised to appeal for gifts of essential cleaning materials – especially bleach, but also such things as disinfectant, floor cleaner, glass cleaner, washing up liquid, dish cloths and polish. The volunteers also called in at the Preventorio with 80 hand-knitted children’s jumpers – all knitted and donated by people along the Costa Blanca. Earlier this year a previous donation of 86 jumpers was made to other children in need. HELP’s next event is the festive Carols Round the Tree in Jalon’s Church Square on Friday 12th December at 7.30pm. Singing will be led by the U3A Vall de Pop Casual Choir and youngsters from local schools – drinks and Christmas nibbles will be available at this community event. Anyone wishing to make a donation to the Gandia appeal can take items to the HELP shops in Jalon or Alcalali, or to Casa de Animo in Alcalali. Get into the swing THE HIGHLY successful Jazz at the Parador series ends the year on a high note with a tribute to top swing era drummer Gene Krupa. By Jack Troughton AMERICAN DRUMMER Jeff Jerolamon comes to the Javea hotel on Saturday 13th December to pay tribute to a musician who was recognised the best man on a drum stool in his day. And backed by the Enric Peidro Trio, the concert features Jeff at his frantic and crazy best – hitting everything in reach as he brings top Krupa hits – like ‘Drum Boogie’ and ‘Swing, Swing, Swing’ to life, along with a selection of evergreen jazz standards. Jeff is known in the industry for his quirky sense of humour and some spectacular drum solos – especially with the brushes in his hands.
Jeff His hero Gene was born on 15th Jerolmon’s January, 1909 in Chicago and joined ‘swing Benny Goodman’s Big Band in 1939. By thing’ 1938 he had formed his own band with Roy Eldridge and Anita O’Day. His solos were legendary and his playing was an inspiration to others. Picture show IT ALL looks so different in the Movies! Films are an escape from reality often as we view that Silver Screen. There are the comfortable Sunday afternoon on the couch films and there are re runs of favourites that seem like old friends. There are old and new presentations, giving us the past, the present and the future. Some are weepies, and though we know the plot off by heart, we can’t help but to view these films as if it were the first time. Films make us laugh and cry, they can inform and teach, surprise and shock, comfort and scare. Whatever they are set to do, a film is something we like to even own a copy of, and that’s what makes them so special. They are our free choice and will probably always entertain us when we need them to. I very often get a film like view of the Spirit World and what it is like and I feel that it is just like a favourite film, very much up to us to enjoy, open to interpretation and stunningly beautiful. I have never seen the long tables of people in robes set to judge us for our Earthly encounters and endeavours and our failures too, but yes, I have seen the fountains, the wide spaces and I have felt the energy of love and survival. Survival doesn’t appear as desperate, make do and mend, but a security that the Earthly stage has gone and the ugliness of the planet we current inhabit is far, far away. Maybe then we see what we want to see there in the holding space that freely admits those who have moved on after the greatest journey of life. There may very well be the very best of sets there, but when they are examined they will be found to be real and illuminated and made special by the corporate energies of Mother Nature, The Ascended Masters, visiting invited Angels of all types,

animals we have loved and lost and never forgotten, and requited friends, neighbours, colleagues and family, lovers and children. Any living thing in the Spirit World will appear in fabulous Technicolor before our eyes and just meeting again for real those we gave our heart to here on Earth is a wonderful and magical feeling. Initially you may think as I did that this is a dream, but it is the purest most sacred experienced fuelled by love and the combined energies of the souls at rest. What appears unreal is the great extent of colour and the attention to detail. Like a film that has great camera angles, the best of dialogue and that tells a fascinating and varied story. My glimpses have allowed me to see more than many may have. I worked once with a wonderful young woman who actually died giving birth to her son. Her encounters in the beautiful garden she found herself in were each a treasure. The intensity of light and the colours and the hypnotic smell of the flowers within were her depth of experience. In fact it was only when she put up a protest and started hitting the man who was asking her to leave the garden that she came back to life, punching and kicking the air. This was, thankfully, the defibulator re starting successfully her heart once more so that she could return to life here on Earth; and be a loving mother to her son. After her great and memorable experience she felt compelled to paint, though she had had no previous artistic ability. Her wild paintings were full of colour and showed a fearless representation of her momentary time out there in the garden of Spirit. Life continues and there will be repeat performances for us all, at the late night, double feature Picture Show!

I dislike the word normal, but it is absolutely a tuning in of your daughter to the World of magic that Spirit brings. It doesn’t cause her any distress, or sleepless nights, because presumably you would have shown concern for these negative actions and mentioned them. Ruby Wedding celebration
Brits give to Emaus By Irena Bodnarec GENEROUS MEMBERS of the Companians Social Club in Albir handed over 1000€ to the Emaus children´s charity at their Tuesday morning meeting this week. The money was raised at a recent Variety Night Show, which was organized by club member Pete Cranage and his wife Sue and saw 20 talented members performing in front of 200 people at The Forum in Alfaz. Else, owner of ´Something Else Bistro´ in Albir and heavily involved in fundraising for the home was there to accept the donation on behalf of the charity. The money will be used to buy presents for the 30 children that are in the Altea home, which will be handed over on 6th January – 3 Kings Day. This year it was decided to give them gift tokens from fashion outlet H&M so that the children can choose their own items, buying during the sales and so making the money go even further.

By Jack Troughton GEOFF AND Elaine Mitchell celebrated their Ruby Wedding anniversary last weekend with a meal with friends and a performance of their wedding hymn ‘Love Divine, all Love’s Excelling’. The couple and friends enjoyed a meal at Gastro Comic on the Saturday evening, on Sunday – the day of the anniversary - both were members of the Church of England congregation in Albir.
Elaine played a short organ recital to mark 150 years of the Royal College of Organists, helping raise funds for the RCO as part of a worldwide ‘150 for 150 Challenge’. Her choice of music included two pieces by Bach and a Haydn sonata, as well as the wedding hymn. The recital followed the service and the congregation enjoyed coffee with some ‘Ruby Wedding cake’ baked by Elaine.
The Church Services with Holy Communion are held in Albir are at 9.45 every Sunday using the Norwegian Seaman’s Church premises , Carrer Mart, 8 Albir Playa. The Santa Fun Walk – run – stroll – crawl…! This is one of the most popular events on the calendar - and the nuttiest! The Santa costumes are outrageous and the walk attracts participants of all ages and fitness levels to tackle the route that runs through Playa Flamenca and La Florida. This is a great opportunity to be a Claus with a Cause and walk off your English breakfast - water will be provided free along the route courtesy of Evolution La Fuente. to walk the course, run or jog: bring the dog – bring the mother-in-law - bring the kids – pushchairs, wheelchairs and Zimmer frames… all are welcome! Jollying the walkers along will be Sunshine FM with plenty of festive tunes to get everyone in the Christmas mood and TAABS will serenade everyone. The Torrevieja Tigers Rugby Club will be hauling Santa around in lieu of absent reindeers – please bring along non-perishable food items to add to Santa’s sleigh so that Reach Out can help the needy over Christmas. Aladdin: in two languages! FOLLOWING THE great success of Aladdin in San Pedro del Pinatar, the ADAPT association is delighted to announce that they are going ‘on tour’ with the Panto to Jacarilla, near Bigastro, courtesy of the Asociación Cultural Jacarilla, on Friday 12th December: curtain at 7pm. A traditional English pantomime, this version of Aladdin is different - it is in two languages and open to both Spanish and English speaking communities to join in the fun! As well as the ADAPT theatre group actors, the fantastic Ballet Kebanna dancers will also be on stage. Payment is at the door - just 2€ for adults and 1€ for children, with proceeds going to a local charitable cause.
La Zenia Church Christmas Concert NIGEL HOPKINS will present his popular Christmas Concert in La Zenia Church, Orihuela Costa, on Sunday 14th December at 8pm. The concert features the leading chamber choir ‘In Harmony’, as well as the ever-popular ‘Cantemos! Youth Choir’. And the audience will be invited to join in singing a great selection of popular Christmas carols Cantemos! will show off their versatility with some harmonious arrangements of popular Christmas music that will include ‘Santa Claus Is Coming To Town’, ‘White Christmas’ and a very special ‘Rudolf, the Red-Nosed Reindeer!’ The concert supports the new church building fund and is always a sell-out so tickets at 6€ should be purchased as soon as possible from La Ponderosa Gift Shop on La Zenia Island. Johnny goes for the Jugular the ´F´ Word Way WHEN HE was just 24, Johnny Depp came to prominence in USTV cop show ´21 Jump Street’ and became an instant success. His swarthy good looks turned him into something of a teen idol, and he continues to woo the ladies at 51 years of age. Johnny is an excellent guitar player, and moved from Kentucky to LA to become a musician, but after he met Marlon Brando acting became his first love. Whilst talking to Details Magazine last week about his latest film, the subject of his last 4 movies not doing too well at the box office came up and Johnny retorted: “As Marlon once so beautifully ***king said, ‘Life is a birdsong,’ ‘n that’s stuck with me.” Enhancing his obviously angry feelings even more he added “First, I reached a point of being so diligent in terms of approaching the work, then I got to where I cared so much that it got goddamn beleaguering, then suddenly you care enough to not give a f***, because not giving a f*** is what brings total liberation!” Pretty fruity lingo I´m sure you´ll agree, but if any of us were being interviewed by some college graduate who’s banging on about how poor your work is, chances are even a saint amongst us might turn into a sinner. Depp´s new movie is a musical called ‘Into The Woods’, due for release on Christmas Day, and interestingly Johnny plays the Wolf. On the business of selling his films he said, “This process I love, but I don’t know how much longer I can do that,” then very openly added, “actors essentially have to peddle their ass to sell the movie, and at a certain point, one has to dig deep and go, ‘Man, it´s a birdsong!” … Sweet Tweet Johnny! AN UN-NAMED company held a survey last week asking 1000 people to complete the following sentence ´Jeremy Clarkson is … ´ Alright!! … ´A bully hiding behind a thin veil of sarcasm´ wrote a few, and also ‘Git’ popped up, as well as numerous comments relating to both male and female genitalia. 15% of the participants filled in ‘presenter of Top Gear,’ … Aha! They´ll be the ones who watch the show!
I WAS seriously envious of a friend of mine who not only wrote ´My-Coo- Ca-Choo´ for Alvin Stardust but immediately went out and bought himself an Aston Martin DB5. The relevance of this tale, other than me name dropping, is that in 007´s next outing he´ll be driving a Fiat 500 and not the iconic DB5. The Aston Martin was blown up at the end of Skyfall, but who cares about continuity ... A Fiat?

-IR verb endings in present simple We are still working on our present simple tense of verbs and the changes that they make depending on which group they fall into. To understand how the present simple tense works we have to divide verbs into three categories: 1. Standard verbs which follow simple regular patterns; 2. Root-changing verbs which also follow regular patterns; 3. Irregular verbs of which there are only four.
We are currently still in category 1, and we have looked the changes made to –ar and –er ending verbs. So, in this article we shall look at standard –ir ending verbs, which will mean that one main category will have been dealt with. Let’s take a common –ir verb: VIVIR which means “to live”. Remember that the first thing we must always do is separate the ending –IR from the root VIV. This is a basic procedure that we need to get into the habit of doing whenever we are dealing with verbs. As we have seen with our previous standard verbs, the root VIV will not vary, so we can repeat it for all six changes.

Now for the ending changes which indicate who is the person or persons are who live. These are as follows. o imos es ís e en You will notice that these are not dramatically different from the “-er” verb endings. In fact there are only two forms (1st and 2nd persons plural) which vary. I like to think that –ir verbs have a slight identity problem. They are inclined to copy –er verbs and the drop of a hat. OÍR makes some other minor spelling adjustments although it remains a standard verb. Ex-Pats go Xmas shopping
By Irena Bodnarec MEMBERS OF the Companains Social Club in Albir went on their annual Xmas shopping trip to La Zenia Boulevard on the Orihuela costa at the beginning of this week. Two coaches took over 100 club members from Albir Gardens, where the group hold their weekly meetings every Tuesday morning for the day excursion. The ladies shopped till they dropped, with most clutching armfuls of carrier bags full of Xmas presents – with Primark proving very popular! Club President Barbara Banks said the day trips which the club puts on are hugely popular with the members, allowing many to visit places which they normally wouldn´t be able to access easily. She welcomes all English speaking residents to the club, which has over 500 members and next year celebrates its 10th Anniversary, with a grand ball at the El Canor banqueting suites in Teulada on Friday 9th October. Club opens at 10:30am for coffee and official start of the meeting is from 11:30am.

Can copper heal arthritis? THE POWER of Copper as an element for helping suffers of arthritis has been debated for years, with its power of healing going back to the ancient Greeks. One respected medic, 74-year-old Professor Albert Singer, has suffered from osteoarthritis in his knees and feet for years and has worn custom-made orthotics for the past six years. Singer, Emeritus Professor of Gynaecological Research at the Whittington Hospital, London held a study of 230 arthritic patients given Copper Heelers insoles: an incredible 96% were found to experience an improvement in their symptoms. The professor said: “I asked my orthotist and he showed me Copper Heelers. All his patients said the soles helped ease the pain of their arthritis.” He added; “About 13% of the population suffers with arthritis. The least I could do was to set up a study to ascertain whether there was any benefit in copper insoles,” and within three weeks of wearing copper insoles, Professor Singer’s pain had gone. Results are expected shortly from a trial now being carried out by the Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust. Professor Alan Silman, of Arthritis Research UK, says: “The findings of Professor Singers’ study are interesting but as this research was not conducted formally it is not possible to reach a conclusion. There is no scientific or medical evidence to support the use of copper insoles but some patients with joint pains have reported feeling the benefits.” Another user is Jean Davis who was scheduled for hip replacement surgery after suffering with arthritis for 18 months. 73-year-old Mrs Davies of Dunster, Somerset,
wore the insoles for a period of six weeks. A pre-surgery check revealed her arthritic hip no longer warranted a 5,000€ operation at Taunton’s Musgrove Park Hospital and was advised by her doctor that the surgery was no longer necessary. “The difference was incredible,” says Jean. “The doctor x-rayed my left hip and told me I had severe arthritis and I would need a replacement hip. I put the Copper Heelers insoles in my shoes that day and within six weeks I was totally pain free. When I went back to the doctor, he was amazed. I have been fine. I get the odd twinge when I walk up stairs but apart from that, it is wonderful: all thanks to a pair of 39.95€ copper insoles.” Tony Andrews of The Original Copper Heeler, the company which developed the gadgets, says: “Coppers Heelers are a

Have I been scammed? DEAR AUNTY: Recently I was in contact with Norton, my security provider, when I received a mobile call from an Indian-sounding caller who I could not understand at all! His voice was very muffled and vague. I shut off the call and made a note of his number on my phone.
My issue with Norton was not a security problem but they sorted out the problem which was not enough memory on my Notebook. However the problem has returned yet again! Google Chrome keeps crashing!! And the Notebook is very slow, yet again. What is going on? The Indian gentleman was (I think) nothing to do with Norton as I was already in conversation by text! Since then it has become very difficult even to write this message as it constantly freezes. Have I been scammed? Terry. Aunty says: Unless you gave permission to someone to access your PC, or installed software that a person asked you to, then no one can take over your PC, and so you will not have been ‘scammed’. The person calling was probably a scam caller - the common one is they say they are from Microsoft and have found problems with your PC, they need access to your PC to fix it, and then once they get access, they hold you to ransom for money to release control of your PC threatening to delete files from it. Needless to say, it is a scam. Microsoft do not call people up - most if not all contact is via email. Microsoft cannot determine if PCs have problems unless you have told them. But your ‘slow and freezing’ problem could well be the lack of memory issue again. How did this get resolved - did you install more memory? Or you have lots of software running that is taking up the resources? In which case locate what software is running, and if it is unnecessary, stop it from loading up automatically, or uninstall it altogether. It may also be advisable to run a full Antivirus and Antimalware scan, just to make sure you have no ‘nasties’ taking up resources.

Compatability setting HI AUNTY: When I click on a link to some websites I get the message shown below saying that I am using IE 7, when in fact I am using IE 11. I have been on Google to find a solution and I was recommended to add the site to compatibility setting. I did this but the problem remains. I also made Google Chrome my default browser but I still end up with the same message. Any advice? Regards, Tony Aunty says: The website you mentioned to me is fine using all the browsers I have. However, further investigations show
that it could be an addon or other program you have causing problems. You say you have added the site to the Compatibility list : From IE> Tools (or Alt + t) Compatibility View Settings, verify that the site is not in the list and that “Use Microsoft compatibility lists” is unchecked. Do you have MS Word installed (some people suggest this is can cause a conflict?)Perhaps, if you do not use MS Word, you can uninstall that, and see if your browsers work? Or reset IE and Chrome, and uninstall any installed addons, one of the addons may be causing the problem.

Rugby La Vila News LAST SATURDAY Rugby La Vila first team travelled to Zaragoza to play against Fenix RC, winning a hard fought battle and achieving a final score of 7-0 in what can only be described as atrocious conditions. The pitch was full of water and mud! The boys are not used to these conditions, but they stuck it out and came away with an away win and 4 more points on the board, keeping the team in second place on the table. The under 18s took their first win of the season, playing away against Elche Rugby Club, winning 38-5 Sunday 7th December is an important game for the first team against local rivals Les Abelles from Valencia at 12.30pm: the victory is needed to stay at the top of the table! Don’t miss out - tickets cost 5€. There will be an Argentinian Barbecue organised for the after match lunch. Roast Veal rolls with Creole Sauce for only 4€. Skoda Roomster Scout ROOM IS a necessity for families. You don’t appreciate this until you become a parent. THANKFULLY, SKODA realises this and its Roomster, which reminds me of a Pope mobile thanks to the styling at the rear, has bags of space (up to a cavernous 1,780 litres – quite something for a small MPV). Its seats have 20 configurations so that no matter what you’re transporting the optimum
amount of room can be utilised. For instance, if bicycles are being carried then perhaps one of the rear seats might be removed but if rubbish is being taken to the tip then the whole lot can be taken out. Usually I have to make an exploratory trip to every vehicle I test before daring to show it our enormous tandem pushchair but I don’t bother with the Skoda. On lifting the large hatch it fits perfectly with room to spare. In fact there is almost enough room for some shopping… but more about that later... What I love about Skodas is that they always feel well built and robust. The Roomster Scout is no different. Once behind the wheel you quickly forget its shape. “There’s so much light inside due to the particularly large rear windows,” my wife Caroline notes. They are larger than the square edged front ones, which remind me of those on an old Saab 900 as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. There’s a five speed manual gearbox but no engine stop/start and yet the 1.6-litre diesel engine will return a very respectable 60mpg. Just as well because
it has a demanding weekend ahead. On the Saturday we take it to the north of Hampshire to visit some art exhibitions and as ever time is imperative. Quickly I get used to the driving position, which is slightly higher than in a standard car making it good for overtaking and providing an added sense of security. I forget to put the child locks on the rear doors and as we are making good progress down the outside lane of the accident blighted M3 a red sign depicting the vehicle suddenly appears on the dashboard – Harriett has tried opening her door. Fortunately I’m able to travel from the outside to the inside lane fairly swiftly to park on the hard shoulder and rectify my mistake. Hot and flustered I am grateful for the air conditioning, which is certainly effective. The driver’s seat seems comfortable enough but extra padding in the lower lumbar region would be beneficial. I like the layout of the dash in this Scout version which is fairly simple and easy to navigate. The leather steering wheel, gearknob and handbrake give a welcome feeling of luxury.
