Más Amigos for La Plasa OVER THE last year, talks have been ongoing between Más Amigos, the Town Hall and Banco Sabadell regarding taking over the upper floors of the La Plasa shopping centre. by Keith Nicol
The Three Kings arriveon Monday evening
The Three Kings arrive on Monday ON MONDAY evening all over Spain, their Majesties the Kings of the East, Gaspar, Melchior and Balthasar can be seen parading down city streets, along with other special ‘duties’ such as visiting local hospitals, old peoples homes, children in need and spreading good cheer. Read the full story on page 16.
LOCATED IN a prime position in the heart of downtown Torrevieja, La Plasa has a thriving Fish and Meat market on the Ground Floor, with the upper levels closed except for one music shop, while the top floor houses a closed cinema complex. It has always been difficult to find tenants for La Plasa and some of the units have never been occupied from day one with the top floors closed for over a decade. Más Amigos have shown great interest in taking over the top two floors and have also been in talks with the Norwegian Consulate regarding their moving into the facility as there are many Norwegians living around Torrevieja, including Orihuela Costa, Ciudad Quesada (Rojales), Pilar de Horadada and several other places in the Vega Baja. The rejuvenation of La Plasa is just part of the campaign “We believe in Torrevieja” run by Banco Sabadell. Twenty years ago, the City Council awarded the construction of the building to a developer which included the tearing down the old market building. The company financed the construction in exchange for exploiting the upper two floors and underground parking and cede the main floor to the municipal market. Continued on page 8

“Cruel” axe for expat fuel payments
Margaret Hales sitting on her winter fuel
by Jack Troughton
by Keith Nicol
THE GOVERNMENT has been accused of changing the meaning of ‘winter’ to rob expat pensioners of their annual Winter Fuel Payments. A former top Tory official believes the Department of Work and Pensions has massaged the figures in a “cruel” move to deny expats of the annual payment – worth up to £300 a year depending on age. The payments are scheduled to stop this coming autumn. It is a controversial end to support designed to help keep the elderly warm in the coldest months. Ironically, the axe falls as more and more expat pensioners in Spain say they are increasingly dependent on the tax-free payment. Roger Boaden, 74, who worked for the Conservative Party for 30 years and managed Margaret Thatcher’s three General Election campaigns, was so upset by the announcement pensioners living in “warm countries” he used freedom of information requests to dig deeper. Mr Boaden, who lives in the Limousin area of France where winter temperature frequently fall to minus 10, found the Government had reclassified winter as five months, November to March. However, both the Met Office and English dictionaries classify winter as the three months of December to February. And a ‘temperature test’ has been introduced based on an average taken in South West England, the warmest part of the UK. However, the DWP includes the tropical regions administered by France in its average temperatures, and Spain’s figures include the Canary Islands and its North African enclaves. COMEDY “I wasn’t surprised when I heard about this,” said Mr Boaden. “The whole thing to me has been a like an episode of ‘Yes Minister’ (the satirical television comedy), it really has.” Five countries fail the temperature test: Spain, France, Greece, Portugal, Malta, Gibraltar, and Cyprus. An estimated 95,000 from 139,000 currently claiming the allowance will be hit should Parliament agree; currently pensioners aged over 80 receive £300, the under 80s, £200. Mr Boaden found that the DWP now maintained winter stretched a total of 151 days of
the year and he has written to Pensions minister Steve Webb to highlight his concerns. “This Government is changing the rules in a cruel way; they are using questionable figures, which they have interpreted and manipulated to make them fit a policy which will deny the winter fuel payment to those expats who live mainly in Spain and France.,” he said. Mr Boaden and his wife Maria retired to France 12 years ago. They spend their allowance on logs for the wood burner and say their winters are cold, wet, and subject to bouts of severe weather with frequent heavy snow. “We could survive without the winter fuel payment but it is unquestionably a real help with our substantial heating bills,” he added. Margaret Hales MBE is a leading campaigner on the Costa Blanca against ending the fuel payment. “People are sending letters and emails to me saying the situation is ridiculous – they give information about elderly people living in Spain who rely on this annual payment to keep warm in winter. FRAIL “They need the payment for gas bottles, electricity and for wood. These are people who are frail and aged in their eighties.” She said Spanish homes were built for summer and the Government policy took no account of the huge temperature swings during the winter months. “The Government is making corporate policy decisions and individuals are ending up as the victims,” added Margaret. “Age Concern, HELP, and other charities are increasingly concerned about some more elderly residents here they know about who have very little money.” Expats feel they have paid into the system in the UK all their lives and the Government, in a bid to reduce its benefits bill, has found them an easy target. The DWP maintains its five month winter to take an average temperature was “to provide consistency with the claim period for claims from 1st November to 31st March.” It also believes it was unrealistic to take regional temperatures into account and therefore centred on a state’s mainland and overseas departments. Chancellor George Osborne sparked outrage amongst expats when last year he announced the government had devised a tem-

Work finishes on main thoroughfare by Keith Nicol THE RENOVATION, beautification and improvement programme on Avda, de la Habaneras in Torrevieja has been completed. The majority of the worked was focused on the centre median and some pavement areas which required upgrading. The avenue connects the city centre, past the main Bus Station, Courts of Justice and the new, ‘in construction’ Semana Santa Museum with the area of Playa de Los Locos. Work was conducted by members of Torrevieja’s Green Brigade of the Municipal Department of Parks and Gardens, who have completed work on the more than 600 linear metres along the major artery. To accomplish this, different methods of remodeling have been used, among other materials, artificial green grass, various artificial turf colors and ‘trencadís’, a decorative technique that is based on the placement of tiles and coloured ceramic pieces of tiles. The result provides a very different aspect of mixing light and colour that gives more person-
ality to this busy avenue. The Councillor for Parks and Gardens, Carmen Gómez, remarked that this “rejuvenation programme is part of an Action Plan that also applies to roundabouts and medians in other areas of the municipality.” She added that the programme is; “in order to tidy them and provide them with own personality.” Gómez said that “residents and neighbours requested something more colourful in the area, so it was decided to carry out this reformation with these materials and this has been welcomed by them.” She added that investment in the work was limited to the costs of the materials used by the operators of the Green Brigade, with a result that is being praised by neighbors and citizens in general.

Cristina to stand trial IT HAS been confirmed that Spain’s Infanta Cristina, youngest daughter of King Juan Carlos and sister of the reigning monarch King Felipe, will be required to stand trial with 15 other suspects accused of fraud in the high profile Noos case involving the embezzlement of millions of Euros of public money.
by Jan Gamm CRISTINA WAS on the board of the Noos Institute. The 49-year-old mother of four will face the court on two counts
of tax fraud despite lawyers’ efforts to avoid her having to answer charges. She is accused alongside her husband, Inaki Urdangarin, Duke of Palma, whom she married in 1997. In Febru-
ary Cristina claimed to a Spanish judge that she had simply trusted her husband in matters of business and had no knowledge of financial transactions involving the Noos Institute.

Montserrat avoids jail
SPAIN’S MUCH-LOVED star soprano, Montserrat Caballé, has been handed a six-month jail sentence for tax evasion and given a 240,000€ fine to be added to the 505,000€ fine she already paid in the spring of 2014. She will also be required to pay 75,000€ in interest, the total payable amounting to more than 800,000€. The 80-year-old Barcelona-born singer attracted the interest of the tax authorities when she spent too much time out of Andorra, thereby making Spain her fiscal residence for a significant period during 2010 when she earned several million Euros for her recordings. As Montserrat has no criminal record she will not be required to serve the six month prison sentence. The famous soprano is best known for her spine-tingling rendition of ‘Barcelona’ in a duet with Freddy Mercury.

Murder suspect in court by Jack Troughton BRITAIN’S ‘MOST wanted’ fugitive – and the prime suspect for a Costa Blanca murder – is scheduled to appear before a judge at Liverpool Crown Court today (Friday). Paul John Scott was snared trying to sneak back into the United Kingdom in a light aircraft but was arrested along with the Dutch pilot as the plane touched down at an isolated Norfolk airfield on 16th December. The 32-year-old from Merseyside was being hunted by the National Crime Agency in connection with a plot to flood the streets of Britain with drugs. However, Scott is also wanted over the killing of 25-year-old Francis Brennan by Spanish police. His tortured body was washed up in an industrialsized bin bag wrapped in tape on a La Zenia beach last April. Francis, from Liverpool, was last seen
alive in Javea on 24th January 2014 when he was kidnapped after being handcuffed by bogus police officers. Scott was arrested two weeks after a BBC One Crimewatch appeal by the NCA after a manhunt was launched for Scott – he was said to have European connections and was described as dangerous. Officers from Norfolk Police and Border Force were waiting at East Winch Airfield when a Cessna 170 touched down following a flight from Holland. Suspicions had been raised 10 days earlier when the pilot made a landing at the same aerodrome in a different aircraft. CASH It is understood that Scott was in possession of fake Belgian identity papers and 2,000€ in cash. The fugitive was wanted as a suspected member of a Merseyside-
based organised crime gang and has been charged with conspiracy to import cocaine from South America disguised inside tins of fish and wooden pallets. The drugs ring has been described as being behind one of Britain’s “biggest ever” smuggling plots, said to be worth around £4 billion. Greg McKenna, North West Investigations Branch Commander, said Scott had been the last man wanted in the NCA’s plot to flood Britain with huge quantities of drugs and was also wanted in relation to Francis Brennan’s murder. “Paul Scott actively sought to evade arrest but thanks to a member of the public reporting their suspicions and great work by our partners, his days on the run are over,” he said. And so far the drugs investigation by the NCA has seen 25 members of an international crime network jailed for a total of more than 270 years.
Ebola in Glasgow
A WOMAN who returned to Scotland from Sierra Leone on Sunday evening is being treated for Ebola in isolation at Glasgow’s Gartnavel Hospital, it has been confirmed by UK Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt. The woman was an NHS worker with the Save the Children Charity at the Ebola Treatment Centre in Kerry Town, Sierra Leone. She will shortly be transferred to London’s Royal Free Hospital where a specialist unit has been set up to deal with the disease and where British nurse William Pooley was treated. An investigation has been launched to trace all possible contacts with the victim, including on all flights into Scotland via Heathrow Airport, although it is thought the woman had close contact with only one other person. The telephone helpline 08000 858531 is available for anyone who travelled on the BA1478 Heathrow to Glasgow flight on Sunday. The total number of confirmed Ebola cases worldwide is now approaching 20,000.

Magaluf says ‘no more Boozy Brits’ MAGALUF IS taking steps to recover its respectable reputation as a family holiday resort by banning boozy Brits and their pub crawls. Police patrols are planned to monitor the main tourist areas such as Punta Bellena in 2015 in a bid to return Magaluf to its status as a ‘mature tourist zone’. The town has long been a favourite with 18 – 30 holidaymakers and as a result has lost its family-friendly image. The move comes after an incident during the summer of 2014 when a British teenager was video-ed performing sex acts in return for drinks, sparking outrage amongst local residents. Elected officials said they would do whatever it took to clean up Magaluf’s image and this week Tourism Minister Jaime Martinez confirmed plans to recover the town’s reputation in time for next year’s tourist season.

Orihuela football on the edge by Keith Nicol NEW YEAR’S day was make or break for Orihuela CF as the football club have been threatened with closure by the Football authorities. Having fought against relegation because of financial irregularities two seasons ago, only to underperform and be relegated anyway, the team have struggled to find sponsors and enough support to cover their debts this season and now face closure. This week, about 200 people, including coaches, players, employees and former club officials protested outside the Orihuela Town Hall to ask for money to cover the pending payment of a grant and prevent the disappearance of the club from January 1st, 2015. The third division team announced two weeks ago that they would have to leave the competition if they did not receive a grant before 31st December, 2014, of 60,000€ as part of an advertising agreement. The players and coaching staff marched from the Los Arcos stadium to City Hall where participants chanted slogans to protest the lack of action by the government
team and their support of football in the city of Orihuela. A police cordon protected the entrance to the town hall, preventing leaders of oriolano team entering the building. The club, through a statement, thanked the support of the fans during the “concentration protest” and regretted that neither Luis Galiano, Councillor for Sports or Carolina Gracia, Councillor of Finance and Youth and candidate for mayor, chose not to meet with them. The staff of Orihuela have gone for two months without pay and intend to leave the club on January 1st, with the prospect of the future of the club being put in serious danger of disappearing. The team have the backing of opposition group CLR who added their support to Orihuela CF and said they require the bipartite government to fulfill its commitments. CLR said they have denounced the government team “for having exhausted their budgetary resources on other issues”. CLR held a demonstration on Monday to request payment of 60,000€ to the team and urged the bipartisan Greens and PSOE government “to comply with
Hundreds of supporters, staff and players protest against the Orihuela Government
its commitments to this oriolano club whose image in his day had no qualms but to serve their political interests” they said in a state-
ment. CLR previously made a request back in the May 2014 Council Meeting for the Government to fulfill their obligations to the club.”
Prestigious Award for HOSBEC By Irena Bodnarec HOSBEC, THE Hotel Association for Benidorm and the Costa Blanca have been awarded a ´ Plaque for Tourist Merit´ in recognition of the work it has done over the last 37 years. The Government presented the award to the Association for “ being an exemplary model of a joint partnership between public and private sectors within the hospitality industry, local government and business groups”. A spokesperson for HOSBEC, of which Antonio Mayor has been President since 2008 said that they were delighted with the award, which is the highest accolade in the tourism sector bestowed by the Government, making the recognition all the more significant. HOSBEC was established in 1977, initially for Benidorm but has since has grown to include not only hotels but also other categories of tourist accommodation, restaurants and leisure related businesses within the Valencian Province. The Association is always well represented at Tourism Fairs and the annual WTM (World Travel Market) that takes place in London every November is no exception, being the most important event for the travel industry. HOSBEC have continually had the support of the Benidorm City Council in its work to promote the resort.
La Plasa commercial centre to receive a possible second lease of life
Continued from front page THE SPACE was inaugurated with numerous deficiencies and soon thereafter many businesses left the premises and the upper floors emptied. Banco Sabadell took ownership of these spaces and ordered embargoes on the development company who then entered bankruptcy. The good news is that should an agreement be signed with Más Amigos, then La Plasa has an excellent opportunity to become a thriving marketplace, possibly housing both the Más Amigos Club Headquarters and the Norwegian Consulate along with speciality shops and services. All a very good sign for more employment in Torrevieja and boost to further investment in the city centre.

Brussels says no to Christmas crackers for kids by Jan Gamm IT’S OFFICIAL - a Brussels directive has banned the use of Christmas crackers for children under the age of 12. The satisfying bang of a Christmas cracker at the Christmas dinner table has long delighted children all over Europe. And there’s an added thrill to winning the lion’s share of the cracker containing a hat, joke and silly gift… Now, however, in an ‘elf and safety directive to rival the best, kids are no longer permitted to handle them as they are now classed as ‘low-grade fireworks’. The law forbids the sale of Christmas crackers to kids under the age of 12 and actually several supermarkets in the UK, not prepared to risk the applicable six month prison sentence or £5,000 fine, have already turned teenagers away at the till as they could not prove they were over the age of 12. One 16-year-old was furious to be denied his purchase of a box of six Christmas crackers in Sainsbury’s destined for his Mum’s lunch table and was incredulous when the manager informed him he was too young to pull crackers! In Spain where children are raised from an early age to enjoy fireworks as part of every celebration and fiesta, crackers are not widely used. Amongst expat children, however, brightly coloured festive crackers would be sorely missed should they disappear from the Christmas table completely. Crackers are now classed as an ‘adult purchase’ along with alcohol, cigarettes and X-rated material, in line with trading standards policies, and shopkeepers within the Eurozone are expected to comply accordingly - so remember not to send junior out to buy next year’s supply!

Toy Story WITH CHRISTMAS over and The Kings celebrations looming, Maximo Buch, Minister for Economy, Industry, Tourism and Employment for the Valencian Region has confirmed that this year the Ministry has ordered the withdrawal from the market more than a staggering 70,000 toys deemed to be unsuitable or unsafe for children. Most of the banned toys were manufactured in Asia. 35,272 of these were toys that make soap bubbles; 3,188 toy doll strollers; 4,420 dolls; 11,880 ‘light-up birds’; 4,050 stuffed animals and hundreds of toy trumpets. Speaking at the Toy Museum in Onil, the minister commented that many of the toys “failed to meet regulation labelling,” such as warnings regarding batteries, small parts and fire hazards.

The King’s Speech KING FELIPE’S first Christmas address to the nation on Christmas Eve is being widely criticised as ‘hypocritical’.
King Felipe addresses the nation
by Jan Gamm DURING HIS speech His Majesty was eloquent on the subject of corruption amongst public officials, carefully avoiding the subject of his sister the Infant Cristina, youngest daughter of King Juan Carlos, and her summons to stand trial for tax fraud: she and her husband the Duke of Palma are accused of embezzling millions in the 2010
Noos Institute scandal. Seated in his private office surrounded by family photographs, King Felipe pointed out that public figures did not deserve “…to profit or become wealthy because of their office” and “no preferential treatment should be given to those in high places.” The rest of the King’s speech centred on Spain’s “unacceptable” unemployment rate of 24% and an appeal for continued unity with Catalonia.

Hapless New Year perhaps
THE WORDS ‘Happy New Year’ sure sound empty for Princess Cristina of Spain. It should be ‘hapless New Year.’ What an embarrassment - Spain’s Princess Cristina to be tried for fraud. Talk about a royal headache for King Felipe V1. Princess Cristina is the first royal to stand trial and let’s face it, many of us cannot stand the behaviour of these people. Spain is in a crisis, largely because of its own doing, and here is a Princess acting like she has a princess complex. They want respect but because of their actions they deserve disrespect. It is an unfortunate embarrassment that Felipe is a new monarch. He has not been on the throne a year yet has this embarrassment. Who could blame the poor fellow if he wanted to pull the royal crown down over his eyes to hide from the public… Cristina has predictably denied, denied, denied having any knowledge of her husband’s sordid business dealings. Brad Coe, La Marina
Despicable behaviour
I ALONG with many others on Christmas day at La Zenia beach witnessed a despicable man being extremely cruel to his small dog. He hit the dog and then kicked it twice, so hard it flew into the air. I was appalled. I and many others shouted at him to stop and he then proceeded to hurl insults at us! I have a photo of him, I do hope that ‘karma’ gets him: he ruined for me what had been a lovely Christmas day in the sun. Name and address supplied
Income Tax allowances
THE UK Government has produced a Consultation Document relating to Income Tax Allowances which may become law in the Budget of 2015. I have examined the Consultation document (see link below) relating to UK Ex Pat Pensioners with a number of proposals. I am not a Financial or Tax Advisor but this is how I understand it. In Paragraph 6.6 it relates to Ex-pats, being resident in another country and suggests that those who are in receipt of Government style pensions, including those retired from the health service, fire service, police service, education, central and local government, prison service and possibly the military, would still retain their Personal Allowance. If such are resident in another country, i.e. Spain, they may be having their State Pension paid into Spain and dealt with separately under the Spanish Tax System. However, if this is the intention, why add the Question 6.2.at the end of 6.6? If a question is asked, a response is anticipated. My thoughts are that if there are insufficient responses received will the law come into operation at next year’s Budget with the exclusion of 6.6, meaning that the Allowance be taken away from those now receiving it? QUESTION 6.2: Do you agree that retaining the UK Personal Allowance in respect of the income of nonresidents which is by treaty subject exclusively to UK
taxation would help mitigate unfair outcomes from a broader policy of restricting non-residents’ entitlement to the UK Personal Allowance? People are then given the opportunity to send in an e-petition in relation to this. As this is to my mind is quite ambiguous, could I suggest that all concerned complete the e-petition form and send it in as requested? Even if it does not affect you directly, friends or relatives, etc., could you also do the same so that the Government receive as large a number of replies as possible? New tourists for Benidorm?
El Gordo winners!
SOME OF the luckiest ticket-holders in Spain scooped the top ten prizes of 400,000€ each in the El Gordo lottery draw on 22nd December, on ticket number 13437. The winning numbers were sung out by 22 children at Madrid’s Royal Theatre. The in-it-to-win-it lucky few hailed from Madrid, SE Murcia, Valencia, A Coruña and Cadiz. The rest of the €2.2 billion total lottery haul in smaller prizes brought Christmas joy to thousands more winners all over the country.
WITH THE sharp decrease of Russian tourists, Benidorm is looking to other former Soviet Union countries to attract new business.
Walkies with a difference! The biggest competitor for Benidorm with this emerging market is Turkey
by Keith Nicol Following trade sanctions imposed by the European Union and United States on the Russian Federation over the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, Versa, the leading Russian Tour Operator pulled out of El Altet and ceased all operations in Spain mid September. HOSBEC are now preparing promotional campaigns in countries such as
Azerbaijan, Belarus and Kazakhstan, whose economies are buoyant and expanding. But Benidorm is not alone in chasing new customers from these shores – Catalonia has been courting them for some time and already has a significant number of flights connecting Barcelona, the capital of the autonomous region with them. In the first half of September 2.7% of the total tourists registered in Benidorm were
13
Russian, but this fell to below 0.6% by the second half after Versa pulled out. However, the biggest competitor for Benidorm with this emerging market is Turkey, which currently attracts many of these post Soviet countries. HOSBEC have already scheduled a number of targeted campaigns to entice them for this coming Summer season but have said that they will continue to keep dialogue with the Russian sector.
THE SPANISH military has introduced tandem parachute jumps for dogs with their handlers, drawing criticism from dog lovers in Spain and also in the UK press. Two Belgian Shepherds, both sniffer dogs, have completed jumps from 10,000 with their handlers, making safe landings in a military training area in Narvik in Norway, securely strapped and wearing muzzles to stop them damaging their mouths. The handlers say the dogs enjoyed the experience but critics argue that the dogs had no choice and were probably happily wagging their tails just to find themselves still alive after their jumps.

The Three Kings arrive on Monday JUST WHEN you thought your gift shopping was over, Spanish children now enjoy a double treat every Christmas time, as after Santa has been and gone, along come the Magic, Kings, better known to us, as the three wise men. by Keith Nicol On Monday evening all over Spain, their Majesties the Kings of the East, Gaspar, Melchior and Balthasar can be seen parading down city streets, along with other special ‘duties’ such as visiting local hospitals, old peoples homes, children in need and spreading good cheer. To put children in the right frame of mind, on 2nd and 3rd January, from 5.00pm to 8:00pm, the Royal Pages personally collect letters from children in Torrevieja from the ‘Khaimah’, which is specially installed for the occasion in the Plaza de la Constitution. Thus, Children should remember that they should not be naughty, but be nice, when writing their letters to their favourite King. The big occasion is Monday January 5th, when there are a number of local parades in such towns as Los Montesinos, Rojales, Orihuela, Orihuela Costa, Guardamar, Elche, Crevillente and Alicante, but the largest locally is in Torrevieja. Being a coastal resort, it’s only fitting that the Three Kings should forsake their camels and arrive instead by boat: so if you are around the harbour at about 5.30pm, January 5th, don’t be surprised to see Torrevieja’s Mayor, various dignitaries and
hundreds of onlookers welcoming the wise men to the City of Salt. The traditional Epiphany parade will begin at 5:30pm with the arrival of the Magi in the port from where they will follow a route towards the Old Man of the Sea Monument, along Calle Ramon y Cajal, the Calle Zoa to Ramón Gallud, ending at the main facade of Church of the Immaculate Conception, facing the Plaza de la Constitución, which for the occasion has been turned into a mini Bethlehem, complete with a manger for the baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph, Romans, the Magi and dozens of onlookers. The Parade features four large floats that will be accompanied by members of the Academias de Baile María del Ángel and Soul Dance, will be performing at the front of the parade alongside the Feriantes de Torrevieja, who will be distributed gifts to all the children of the city. Behind them will be Joseph and the Virgin Mary, accompanied by different groups of animals (ducks, geese, sheep, donkeys, etc.) plus the three floats that host the three Magi from the East: Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar, accompanied by a large pageantry and Royal Pages, as well as a group of riders and the Court of King Pharaoh, all distributing thousands of gluten free sweets so children are advised to bring
More than eight thousand people are expected to line Torrevieja’s streets
their plastic bags to fill them with sweets as they are thrown to the crowd. While Torrevieja may be the largest local parade with upwards of eight to ten thousand people usually lining the streets, for a more intimate affair, for the first time the hamlet of La Mata will also enjoy this year’s traditional Three Kings, with the three Magi from the East. The Ride, which will feature
two large floats, This is also on Monday, January 5th, at 5:30pm, starting on the Avda de Europa, going through the main streets of La Mata to end at the doors of the Church of Our Señora del Rosario, opposite the Plaza de Encarnación Puchol. Here, all those people who wish to be photographed with Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar can do so before the Magi visit the Nativity inside the Church.

Improvements begin on Natural Park AREAS OF La Mata and Torrevieja’s Natural Parks have undergone a restoration process since last November.
Areas of Torrevieja and La Mata’s Natural parks have been undergoing restoration since November
by Keith Nicol The work was funded through a partnership agreement between the Generalitat Valenciana, through the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Environment, and the “La Caixa” Foundation for the Improvement of protected natural spaces, in an agreement signed in December 2013. This is the seventh agreement signed between the two entities, with investment totalling more than 373,000 euros, that has gone towards different activities in the Natural Park since they started in 2006. The latest project has a budget of 15,800 euros with its main objective being the elimination of invasive plants in order to preserve the native vegetation. Biologi-
cal invasion generate increasing economic, ecological and health problems worldwide. At present its control is one of the priority lines of action for the conservation of the natural environment. To alleviate this problem, the Generalitat Valenciana has implemented actions including measures to detect and eliminate the early stages of invasion. These measures also prohibit the planting, seeding or spread of alien species, those not native to the area, throughout the zone. Within this framework, the Natural Park of Las Lagunas de La Mata and Torrevieja, as well as in areas of Toretta III and Mi Sol, will have some of their non natural plants removed in order to improve and regulate the integrity of the area.
APAH give thanks APAH ANIMAL Rescue Charity would like to thank everyone who has helped them in every way; no matter how big or small to keep going throughout 2014. Every single act of giving, whether it is a commitment to keep turning up and helping in their Charity Shops, Kennels or Cattery, a cash donation, a donation of unwanted goods for them to sell or a visit to their shops to buy those donated items is extremely valuable to them. Without this help and support, a charity cannot survive and when a charity’s work involves the welfare of animals, the repercussions of failure are tragic. These are hard times for everyone and it makes the giving from people all the more special when they are willing to give to help animals who cannot help themselves and did not ask to be abandoned, abused or neglected. With help and support, APAH intends to be there for those animals it is able to help, for many years to come.

Skeletal horses and donkeys saved from horrific Granada breeding yard by Patricia Thompson THE EASY Horse Care Rescue Centre at Rojales was recently involved in a major joint operation to rescue a group of severely malnourished horses and donkeys from a Granada breeding yard. At least one foal was found dead at the property - other animals were allegedly moved before authorities could act. Police were alerted to the case by Malaga-based donkey rescue charity El Refugio del Burrito, which teamed up with the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre to save the animals left behind. At least four donkeys were taken into custody on 19th December and El Refugio del Burrito then paid to truck four horses from Granada to Rojales. “They can’t just take the donkeys and leave the horses – every animal has to be removed if there’s a court order,” said EHCRC co-founder Sue Weeding. The Rescue Centre will now permanently care for the rescued stallion and three mares – all of whom were later found to be pregnant and likely to give birth early next year. “You wouldn’t even know they’re in foal, they’re so thin,” said Sue. “It was a breeding yard and because
of the crisis the owner couldn’t sell them. Apparently at one stage those mares would have gone for as much as US$35,000. This guy had obviously just stopped feeding them.” It is understood police are pushing for prosecution. The horrific case came as the Centre was also called to save a pony closer to home, after he was found abandoned near the Callosa de Segura football stadium. “He is full of worms and has a big scar on his head but he’s eating well,” Sue said. She said the influx of cases highlights the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre’s increasingly important role in animal welfare cases, and urged Alicante residents to support the centre’s network of eight charity shops. All money raised in the shops goes towards the feeding and care of the more than 80 horses, ponies and donkeys that live at the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre. The centre opens to the public on Sunday, 4th January: entrance is free with At least one foal horse tours beginning from 2pm. Els Enfarinats strike again! THE ALICANTE town of Ibi held its ‘Els Enfarinats’ event on Sunday, when the reins of civil authority transferred to self-declared officials who proceed to bombard the townsfolk with copious quantities of flour and eggs – and an occasional serving of talcum powder, tomatoes and miscellaneous vegetables! Locals are required to pay ‘taxes’ in return for crossing the Plaza and a refusal results in being pelted with eggs, clouds of flour and the odd firecracker. Spaniards like nothing better than a good food fight and this one has been held on 28th December for 200 years. It is all in good fun and the proceeds go to good local causes. The winter festival of Els Enfaninats concludes with the arrival of the Magi on 6th January.

by Jack Troughton A TIDE of red, white, leather, and chrome, engulfed the seafront at Benidorm as the annual Harley Davidson ‘Toy Run’ thundered into town. Members of the Costa Blanca Espana Biker Group head out on the highway each year to spread a little joy at Christmas – taking presents to the children cared for by charity EMAUS and other youngsters put forward by social services. Scores of these powerful machines make an arresting sight and people line the streets to cheer, applaud, and photograph the gleaming convoy. Journey’s end this year was the Casa de Cultura in Alfaz. Excited children are seated in the theatre, driven into a frenzy of excitement calling for ‘Papa Noel’...behind the curtain on stage were scores of bikers, all dressed as Santa. The curtain is drawn back to screams of delight – and not just from the youngsters – before each child is called to receive a very
Harley boys and girls
personal gift. Bottle the atmosphere and run a Harley free until next year. And as each youngster left the auditorium, they were also given a Cadbury’s Selection Box, courtesy of big-hearted Dee Conway, from Orba, who succeeded in her aim of putting an even bigger smile on the kids’ faces. For the second year, your RTN correspondent was invited along (literally) for the ride. Mandatory dress code is a Santa suit – a snip at 5.99€ from a Chinese clothing emporium and guaranteed (almost) to survive the whole journey. MEAN MACHINE In the car park of McDonald’s Restaurant early on a crisp Sunday morning (21st De-
cember) reporter meets his pilot for the day, Alan Fox and his mean machine. The police arrive and led by flashing blue lights and sirens, the bikes set off with headlights on, horns blaring, and some Harleys playing some seasonal hit sounds on the stereo. The whole run is carefully planned, not least because three local police forces are involved. This year the route could not use the main N332, so it was back roads to Altea, before a ride down the seafront to Albir, a circuit of the town and coffee. Back on the road, the run took us back round Albir and along to Benidorm and the town hall for a planned photo opportunity at the town hall. Everyone then mounted up for the final
leg. A regal wave is needed for the people lining the promenade along Benidorm’s Levante Beach and on to Alfaz. The sound of the Harley’s warned the kids we were coming – we passed waving and again did a quick circuit of the town (scaring a bemused looking elf) and pulled up. Soon the parked bikes were engulfed in youngsters. And while it is a bit of a boy’s own adventure – running red lights with the police is naughty but nice – it was a privilege to again be out with the Harley joy bringers. Thanks to Alan for the ride. His passenger was most impressed he could control the bike when his white (fake) beard blew back in his face...and his ability to share a ‘high five’ with pedestrians en route!

Grapes at Midnight FOR THE First time in many a year, the main town square in Torrevieja is hosting a party to ring in the New Year 2015. by Keith Nicol Other local towns have their own parties too with festivities starting around 11.30pm and finishing in the early hours of the New Year. Traditionally at 12 seconds to midnight, it’s tradition to eat one grape as the bell chimes. The secret of being able to do this in a speedy manner is to eat grapes without seeds and to first peel them, making them easy to swallow whole, before toasting the New Year with a chilled glass of Cava. The tradition of eating grapes dates back to 1896, when a group of locals decided to satirize the usual bourgeois traditions by going to Madrid’s Puerta del Sol and eating grapes to the sound of the chimes. This is the background that led to this custom. The Madrid press commented in January 1897 that: “In Madrid it is customary to eat twelve grapes at the stroke of midnight on the clock, separating the incoming and outgoing year.” What was to become a tradition, sparked so much interest that gradually the idea was extended to the rest of Spain, although it was not until 1903 that it was truly practiced throughout the country. However, another theory put for-
ward is that in 1909, Levantine farmers in Almería, Murcia and Alicante, found themselves with a surplus of grapes and in order to market their production, they managed to popularize the habit and give slowly evolving idea that much needed final impetus, that would eventually turn the consumption of grapes at midnight into a consolidated tradition. Among the offering were Vinalopó grapes, grown along Alicante’s longest river, which flows through Elche and discharges at Santa Pola. Then again, other stories say that it is believed that by eating twelve grapes in time with the chimes brings good luck and a prosperous year. Certain commercial firms saw in this tradition a good opportunity and early 2000s began to trade individual cans filled with twelve grapes: peeled and seeded. While there possibly is a little part truth in all of the stories, at least when the clock strikes twelve bells, in the run up to midnight and the Ringing New Year, you’ll be better prepared and underin the stand a little more about a Spanish tradition; New Year be it by watching it on Spanish TV or experiin Puerto encing it for yourself in a local pub or the Town del Sol, Square. Benefit more from your Mediterranean Garden this year
by
Dick Handscombe Holistic gardener and author
ALTHOUGH THE days are generally sunny still, evenings are definitely best by the log fire with a glass of warm mulled wine and a mince pie. Your Christmas may have been cheered by a few garden gifts: perhaps a solar cooker – ours too five hours to put together but soon started to save money. It cooks well even with a light cloud but obviously takes longer. Or you can build a garden oven and heat by burning logs and thick prunings, fir cones etc, from the garden or surrounding woods. This year build an extra compost heap to increase your production of inexpensive compost for improving the soil, making potting composts and mulching. Our books ‘Your Garden in Spain’, ‘Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain’ and ‘Growing Healthy Fruit in Spain’ each have comprehensive chapters on how to produce good compost in the dry Mediterranean climate. Bag up leaves in large plastic bags, make a few air holes and then store for a year in a hidden corner of the garden to produce free leaf mould to add to composts. Reduce the expense of buying vitamin and mineral supplements by growing and eating those fruits and vegetables that have the greatest concentrations of these. A comprehensive list of these plus hints for good living from a really traditional but fast disappearing Mediterranean Diet will be found in ‘Living Well From Our Garden – Mediterranean Style’ available from Amazon. Make fire lighters by rolling up dry garden twigs etc, in roils of paper and soaking them with used cooking oils. Start to drink infusions made from mint, rosemary, lemon verbena, lemons and olive leaves instead of tea. Instead of throwing outside leaves and roots of vegetables in the waste bin or putting them on the compost heap, feed a couple of hens for eco eggs and meat. My Christmas turkey thoroughly enjoyed the tit bits and reached 44 lbs! No it wouldn’t go in the oven in one piece – it was sawn in half with a sharp pruning saw! Improve the garden to make it easier to entertain at home instead of dining at ever increasingly expensive restaurants. My outdoor kitchen and eating area constructed last winter has proved very popular for paella, tagine and grilled fish and meat lunches and dinners. Such a set up can be built in the garden, on a terrace adjacent to the house or within the inner patio of a village house. If you do build one please send me a photo of your creative efforts. Hope there are a few ideas for you above. Happy New Year to all!

Quesada Color: Spain’s only Dulux supplier QUESADA COLOR is a brand new painting supply shop that opened for business this month. Managed by James and Angela, this is the only place in Spain that has the rights to make DULUX paint on their premises and to call it DULUX, using their mixing machine and shaker all with DULUX codes. Special permission was given to Quesada Color by AkzoNobel España, who had to apply to AkzoNobel GB, for permission to do so. With a choice of more than 62,000 colours to choose from, never again can you say that you can’t find the ‘perfect colour’. And speaking of colour, remember the name, as yes, it’s not a misspelling: it is ‘Quesada Color’. The idea for a one stop, quality paint supply store, came to owner James when he found himself frustrated at not being able to find quality products as he traveled for work. That frustration led to opportunity and after long negotiations with the world’s largest paint supplier ‘AkzoNobel’, he was granted the very first permission to make Dulux Paint in Spain. During James’s training period, he even surprised himself when trying out their vast range of products and was particularly impressed to find that even when you ‘water down’ the paint by 10%, if using a roller, its special formula stops the paint spraying or being ‘thrown’, a huge boon to working faster, cleaner and in a more efficient manner. Quesada Color can mix and match any colour on their premises. If you have a very special shade you need to match, just bring a sample into Quesada Color and their spectrometer will pinpoint the colour and allow them to create an exact match for you. Even ‘white’ comes in dozens of shades, so now you can order your paint and leave the shop assured that you will have a perfect match when you arrive home. Quesada Color has just about everything in stock for any painting task or surface. Be it interior, exterior, wood, metal, roughcast, matt, satin, gloss: they have it all. Along with paint they also stock a full range of supplies from brushes though rollers to buckets and floor covers, to cleaning supplies and friendly advice on whatever job you have in mind. The majority of their paint stock is water based, making it easy to clean brushes, allowing you to mix water to thin out your paint an additional 10%, is economically friendly, odorless; meaning no problems for animals or children in the household, as well as being environmentally friendly plus some have special solar protection and anti humidity qualities. The paints all mostly have a one hour dying time but they can advise which ones are not and most of the ones they stock, can have a second coat, if needed, immediately once dried. Quesada Color can be found just before the Arches into Quesada. Simply turn left if coming from the main road, and they are located about 400-metres on the left hand side, close to the Bowling and Howard’s Gym, beside Quesada Fish and Chips at Calle Los Arcos 19, Quesada. They are open Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 6pm and Saturday 9.30am to 2pm: closed on Sunday. For more information phone 603 378 732, or just stop by for a friendly chat with James or Angela, who will be delighted to help you find the exact quality paint, all with a guarantee, for your purpose.

You can recover deposits paid off plan, even when the promoter has disappeared or is bankrupt, by taking legal action against the banks. FOLLOWING A review on recent court precedents, we are happy to report an increase in court orders granted against banks forcing them to repay buyers the money they lost in the purchase of properties off plan, even when the purchasers did not have individual guarantees set up in their favor, for the money paid on account. These guarantees are compulsory by law 57/68. Such liability of the bank is usually a consequence of: 1. The bank undertaking to guarantee in a general way the amounts paid in advance by the purchasers in a development (i.e: general bank guarantees line), even though the bank did not hand over an individual guarantee for the purchaser, 2.-That the payments on account where not guaranteed by the developer or guaranteed at all, and the bank received the money in their opened account without ensuring that the guarantees of the law 57/68 (bank guarantee or insurance policy) to cover the money were set up by the developer, as the law requires. We are pleased to inform readers the Provincial Courts are increasingly taking the view that banks are not mere observers and the Law 57/68 obliges them to
ensure that the buyers-consumers have their money protected, and banks must ensure that the guarantees are taken by the developer, when they open an account to receive money from buyers off plan. Recently, in the province of Alicante and Murcia, there have been several judgments from the two Provincial Courts of Alicante and Murcia, condemning numerous banks and promoters, among others: In several occasions to the developer Herrada del Tollo, S.L.”, and the BANCO BILBAO VIZCAYA ARGENTARIA SA, SOCIEDAD DE GARANTIA RECIPROCA DE LA COMUNITAT VALENCIANA and BANCO PASTOR SA, The developer Desarrollo de Activos Inmobiliarios (Detinsa) and CAJA MADRID ( BANKIA) The developer “Resort Tres Molinos” S.L. and Banco Santander S.A.
The developer Cleyton Ges S.L., and Caja de Ahorros del Mediterráneo . The developer HUMA MEDITERRANEO; and Banco Popular, ETC. Therefore, if you paid money for a property purchase off plan and lost it, you should know that there now could be a possibility for you to get that money back. It is important that you prove which bank account you paid your money in to, and check if other buyers paid into the same account. It is important to also check if the promoter confirmed that they would give bank guarantees for the money paid, and with which bank. Finally it is important to check if any guarantees were provided to other purchasers on the same development, etc. So, if you have lost your money with one of the promoters indicated or in any other complex, we may be able to help you. Rebajas! Rebajas! Rebajas!
RETAIL MANAGERS across the country are cautiously predicting a profitable sales period at the start of the Rebajas – the major sales period of the year and one that sees prices slashed by as much as 70% on clothes, home ware and electrical goods. This year many stores in Spain offered pre-Christmas discounts following the American trend of giving massive reductions just after Thanksgiving and prior to Christmas. At this time of year shoppers flock to the cities to take advantage of the best sales in Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia but in recent years retail bosses have noticed sales figures dropping considerably due to online bargains. Despite the trend for buying on the internet, however, 2015 is promising to be a bumper spree for bargain hunting shoppers confident that the recession is at last beginning to ease.
Minimum wage increase for 2015 says Rajoy SPAIN’S PRIME Minister Mariano Rajoy has announced increases to the minimum wage and government-funded pensions, predicting that the country’s economy will “take off” in 2015, following years of crushing financial hardship. Rajoy confirmed that the monthly minimum wage will rise 0.5 percent to 649€pm and that monthly pension payments will increase by 0.25 percent. He also said that the current unemployment rate of 24% would decline in 2015. The Bank of Spain predicted 2-percent economic growth for 2015.

Other year over, another just about to begin

Regional Manager of Blacktower Costa Blanca
FIFTEEN YEARS ago, on 30 December 1999, the FTSE 100 index of the UK’s biggest companies hit its highest closing level ever - at 6,930. CONVENTIONAL WISDOM says that anyone who invests in shares over such a long period can expect to make money. But after two stock market crashes, terrorist attacks, a euro crisis or two, ebola, wars and punitive sanctions the market has still not regained its 1999 peak. Three times in 2014 the index came close, but each time fell back. So on Christmas Eve the FTSE 100 stood at 6,610, still more than 300 points short of its record level. So just by looking at the above it would appear that the average investor will have lost money. But despite the FTSE 100 remaining below the level it achieved in 1999, the vast majority of investors should have made money over this 15-year period,” says Rebecca O’Keeffe, head of investment at Interactive Investor. How and why you may ask, well most shares pay dividends and on average shares in the FTSE 100 yield about 3% a year, which is comfortably better than the best cash ISA, even allowing for tax free interest. Rebecca O’Keeffe, head of investment at Interactive Investor estimates that anyone reinvesting
dividends would have generated an overall return of 60% since 1999. My advice is for investors to look outside the FTSE100, while it has been flat-lining, the index of the next 250 largest companies in the UK - the FTSE 250 - has soared. In December 1999 it stood at 6,444.Fifteen years on the FTSE 250 has passed 16,000. According to Hargreaves Lansdown, someone investing £10,000 in a FTSE 250 tracker in 1999 would have more than doubled their money to £23,000 over the period. If they had reinvested the dividends, they would have more than tripled their money, to £36,000. 2015 FORECASTS It looks like 2015 is going to be another volatile year for the markets across the board. But for the FTSE 100 index to stage any substantial recovery some analysts believe that sentiment towards energy and mining stocks will have to improve significantly. Events in Russia, the continuing manipulation of the oil price by the West to try to weaken Russia, uncertainty in the Eurozone (yet again), the worry that UK and
Europe´s banks are still not entirely safe, weak economic growth in Europe and the UK and the UK general election are likely to add extra elements of volatility. As a result, investment banks are cautious about predicting any great advance in the FTSE 100. Brewin Dolphin believes it will end the year at 7,000. Also it looks like interest rates in the UK and Europe are going to remain as they are for 2015 so little cheer for savers. 2 - 8 JANUARY 2015
Horoscopes Mercury takes a commanding position to ensure that the year begins with all levels of communication ready and awaiting your further instructions. With Mars currently in cahoots this brings the opportunity for you to start as you mean to continue and brings balance to your current situation in more ways than you can imagine. Venus enters into Neptune bringing love around you on all different levels. Honest and truth seeking Neptune demands answers to the questions you dare not even ask your self. The Goddess of Love herself helps you to open your eyes, see what you are missing, and to, above all, give her blessing to open your heart. Where there has been conflict see peace and resolve as the actions of Uranus bring you the ability to see things in a new light. Much that has happened has served to test you but this has taken you beyond the realm of forgiveness, and as such assisted in closing your eyes on something you will now take on board. Be methodical in your approach, and just let sleeping dogs lie for a while as you make decisions based on your own instincts and not the gossip spread by others. Some say that you have made your bed and now you have to lie on it, but this is the chance you have been waiting for, don’t lose any part of it. Actions of Mars see you seeing the light, and putting two and two together. The past weeks have brought about a lot of soul searching, but you must know that your integrity is balanced with your ego, and that now things can really get off the ground. Expect a busy year; be true to yourself and all whom you really love. Mars is backing you, and whilst the conflict now is within you, in this your most indecisive phase, good can come from even your most negative thoughts. Empowered and willing use this inner energy to make a start on just what it is that turns you on right now. You are reluctant to commit, but the timing is spot on. Saturn is en route to bring sage wisdom to you before you give up on something. There is a need to make amends, and to see the challenge that is developing. Nobody is saying what you are about to do is easy, but you have to rely on your gut instincts and sheer determination if all is to work with you the way it could. Mars balances nicely with Virgo, just at a time when you are feeling it is time for a change. Beware of a simple request which sees you taking on more than you can handle at the moment, and know that you are protected by your faith and devotions at this time. Go the extra mile because a sign from you is what’s needed. Mercury knows that you have written a message in your heart, and encourages you to pass this on to those who really do need to hear it. There has been a catalogue of excuses and delays, but facing facts is what you are all about, and what needs to happen right now. Things won’t be as bad as you think. You are about to be rewarded for a job done well. It took courage and foresight to be able to do what you did, and though you expected no thanks there are so many people who have been touched by your need for transparency and resolve. Only one thing remains, and that’s to walk away with your head held high. Venus forms a strong bond as you balance Virgo and Mars in conjunction this week. With love in your heart, and a strong intention to let bygones be bygones and to move on, you now have the right recipe for the future. Not all will take what you have on offer, but you can’t please them, and you must think of yourself. You attract so many people to your side with your mystical energies and your superior spiritual strength. This year ahead is all about change, and though there is nothing you would want to change for yourself, use your abilities to attract those around you who will help you in your journey and they will show you your destiny; as it is calling.

Starting line HERE WE are back in the beginning again. Each and every year we have ever known has always begun this way, but we are on the threshold of a fresh start and waiting for what will happen in the year ahead we face. Usually at this time it is the time to look back on the year just gone by and to extract from it the positive things that brought us joy and the negative things that didn’t and to categorise the year for whatever it was, a big chunk of our life, nevertheless. Starting on a new page does bring us to our senses very often. We do not wish to tempt fate so much as be simply a part of it, and to have it work its wonders for ourselves and those that we love.. Somehow we know that next year will find us looking back at this one in terms of our luck, happiness, health and fortune. We may kick off this year with some resolutions and then somehow let them slip when something else crops up, or realise in the cold light of day that we have been too eager in our expectations. Resolutions only work if we stick to them, and if we see them there at our side for an extended period. We cannot get that gym body or eschew doughnuts forever just on a whim, unless we are intentioned to do so.
However there are some spiritual needs that need our individual attention in this ever changing World. Making decisions that open doors for us are definitely on the cards, and it is very embracing to see that so many people are finding their inner energies and their spiritual powers and learning to put them to good use. The current vibe of opening to Spirit is being felt World wide as there is a shift, and when this comes it gently lifts and awakens those who may have been sleeping for a long while. It also challenges the die hard Spiritualist into action in bringing forward whenever and whatever may be needed right now in the form of change and adaption. Whilst several World religions are finding themselves deserted by so many, and numbers may very well be dwindling, it is wonderful to see that many are flocking to make connections with Spiritual organisations as so many people are beginning to realise that sincerely and utterly, the Earthly journey of the soul is calling them in some way to learn more, experience more and to birth something new. What better time to begin to see things around you for what they are and what they could mean;
Kenny‛s Postbag
as power such as telepathy, self healing, telekinesis, healing and divination can be practised with a view to make changes that help the individual to help themselves and others. Developing skills that come from within are natural and embracing, and they help the individual to reach out to those in need, thus bringing in the love and light needed to do the job well! As the year progresses we will have a good feel for what it is to come, and we will become governors of our own fate and destiny; although such destiny does have a habit of bringing in sweeping changes whereby a minute can change our life forever. Such fortune can lift us up with good intention, whilst we have to also accept that twists of fate can drop us right down there again. I accept that any life is not just a bowl of cherries, and subject to change without notice. But that’s why we have to examine the comforts that can awaken and augment our spiritual side. Life is a rollercoaster, and it is always a fast ride.. Time travels faster than we can handle sometimes as we live our life each to our own personal direction. But there is such a thing as hope, shining abundantly and waiting to play a significant part in all that we wish to do. Remember, please, that death is the beginning and not the end, and next time you see a Spiritual person smile, know that they are free to do that, come what may, in this time of now in the yet unknown formation of another year ahead!

KENNY, I am looking back on a bad year, and I had such high hopes too! How can I start to think about 2015 when we are told that it is going to be worse? Paula Y. Last year brought many changes for us all. I believe that this New Year, as with all New Years, will be whatever we make it. We will emerge from this crisis leaner and keener, and with the dignity that we did what we could when we did. Spirit will help us along the way, if we let them. Things will get better, particularly if we can keep an open mind and stay tuned. Have hope for the year ahead and try to remove the negativities of gloom and doom, however difficult it may get. The power of positive energy helps us to start this New Year as if it were a fresh beginning…..let’s see what we can do!

Pink hair raising
JUST BEFORE Christmas, on Saturday 20th December a very brave young lady, Becci Strickleton, had her hair shaved into a Mohican. by Keith Nicol SHE TOOK this one stage further and then had it dyed pink in support of her friend Maggie, who is going through chemotherapy at present to help cure her breast cancer. To top it off, she then had the anti-cancer ribbon shaved into the side of her shaved head. The event was held at La Fuente Commercial Centre near Campoamor. Becci’s hair was shaved and dyed by Paula at Tiger Feet Hair and Beauty. During this most special event, the crowd was entertained by
Sunshine Radio’s Dan Davey and Alan Scott, formerly of Showaddywadyy Legends. The event was held on behalf of Maria and the Pink Ladies with the proceeds to be donated to the AECC. To date a total of 1,210.50€ has been raised from Becci’s own sponsorship and a raffle, etc. held on the day by Maria and the Pink Ladies. CHRISTMAS SHOPPING took on a different meaning as members of U3A Vall de Pop and Jalon Valley HELP set out to make the festive season a little more special for local families suffering in the ongoing recession. The two organisations had 1,700€ to spend for Caritas and volunteers travelled in convoy to a cash and carry with a long shopping list. And over two hours they pushed flatbed trolleys up and down aisles as they loaded on food, toiletries, washing powder and some gifts before filling up their cars. The goodies were returned to the Caritas store in Alcalali for distribution to needy families in the Jalon Valley community. U3A and HELP wished to extend their thanks to the many people who had contributed to the fund raising for making the gesture possible.

showbiz goss Jodie Marsh has surprised and delighted many with her modelling work, ahem, and body building, but it seems she is now thinking of leaving it all to take up a life in politics … yes you read right! It seems it comes from her friends saying “You should be an MP as you´re always trying to educate people and show them what’s going wrong,” with Jodie then adding “I’ll probably start my own party!” Oh My God!!

Just when you thought it couldn´t get any worse!!
IF YOU drop by here regularly, you´ll know having a pop at reality shows is something of a sport for me, but today I have for you a reality show that is having a pop at itself! Nuts I know … but entirely true! This Wednesday 7th at 10pm on Channel 5 the annual event of us being treated to a bunch of half-baked ´C´ listers doing their stuff in the Big Brother house will be upon us, but that same house might well end up being inhabited by a bunch of ´Minus Zed´ listers!! As half-baked as these ´celebrities´ are they have diaries that get filled with similarly ´half-baked´ things to do, and Channel 5 bosses have only gone and changed the dates for the show that will now end a week later than they originally said throwing everything into utter chaos … not too bright huh?! he word is that several of these so called ´famous peeps´ have already pulled out due to the change of schedule … could this mean the show will have to be cancelled? Alas not! The ever present source stated “we hope we can find replacements, otherwise we’re not entirely sure what we’ll do with our January evenings,” I know what you can do … Hello!! Rumours are rife as to how this shambles is likely to unfold with everything from X Factor rejects to celebrity body doubles apparently being offered a place in the show. Should this chaotic scenario come to pass, we will have, once and for all, absolute confirmation that the producers and programmers of television shows care little about the quality of the visual diet they serve up to us. At the time of writing such was the case … I wish you well if you´re a fan.
The BBC produced an epic 15 hours of television in 1972 of Leo Tolstoy´s literary masterpiece ´War and Peace´ and they are due to start a more bite size 6 x 1 hour production this month. The cast will include Downton Abbeys Lily James and Ade Edmondson playing Count Rostov. Grantchester’s James Norton who will play Prince Andrei Bolkonsky said: “I’m thrilled to be entrusted with Andrei in this exciting adaptation.” Who said Showbiz Goss lacks culcha!
Jamie Oliver, who started presenting a late night cookery programme for BBC2 called The Naked Chef back in 1997, informs us that he was offered the role of a hobbit in the movie in exchange for cooking director Peter Jackson a birthday meal. He said. “I was told they would fly me over and I could be a hobbit in the film, but I was working; I really wanted to do it.” Aah Bless.
When Rory McIlroy was being interviewed last week at half-time in an Irish Rugby match between Ulster and Connacht the guy in charge of the stadium music cheekily played Neil Diamond´s ´Sweet Caroline,´ to which Rory responded “Oh, dear.” I have no information as to what happened to the man who played the music reminding the world’s number one golfer of his failed romance, but the words dole and queue come to mind.

Time for a divorce My husband has been having an affair. I have recently done a lot of thinking and have decided that it would be better to separate and in time divorce. We have two children, 13 and 18. The last thing I want is for them to have to take sides. The eldest is has been suspicious of my husband’s movements. He’s not stupid and asked me once did I think his Dad was seeing another woman. Firstly you need to see a Solicitor and discuss your legal rights. You may even find talking to a Marriage Guidance Counsellor helpful. Children pick up on the tension at home, and it is often better to have two parents happy apart, than two parents miserable together. Explain to the children that some relationships just take their natural course. Explain to them that their Dad will still be a big part of their lives. If they still have a hard time coping then I would recommend a spell of counselling. As long as you both can agree on an amicable separation, the fall out on the children will be as minimal.
Can’t go on much longer..... My husband has a drink problem. He now shows no interest in anything else in his life other than drinking. He calls me controlling and gets angry. It is starting to affect our relationship, and the family in general. I am not sure for how much longer I can put up with this. Alcoholics don’t realise that their drinking although it may not bother them, can have a big effect on family life. Sadly, the more you nag someone, the less likely they are to do what you want. Sit him down one day when he is sober, and explain very calmly why you’re so worried. Speak to him in the right way - serious but calm. Want to stop smoking? Why not try a different approach? Try laser therapy! A laser treatment consists of cold laser which is applied to specific points on the body, thus stimulating the production of endorphins (natural painkillers in the body). Laser will help to stop the cravings, withdrawal symptoms, stress and aid detoxification. It instills a sense of wellbeing thereby reducing the temptation to take another cigarette. Laser therapy has a success rate of 85% The main laser treatment consists of 2 sessions over 2 days and a further 2 sessions are available as and when needed. Your progress will be monitored and reviewed to make sure that you get the best and appropriate support and advice to help you adjust to being a non smoker. All treatments are private and confidential. Below is a personal account of giving up smoking with the help of laser therapy: ‘Having smoked heavily for many years and having tried at least a dozen times to give up, I was convinced that I was never going to kick the habit. My son had heard about the success of laser therapy for smoking cessation and urged me to try it. He told me that smoking is selfish and he wants me to be around to see my grandchildren. Out of guilt, I agreed to try it. My first session was booked a few weeks before Christmas. Life was frantic and I was moving house
too! I hade no time to mentally prepare myself and cut down a little before the big day! Suddenly I found myself on the couch having laser treatment. “I am not ready for this!” I panicked. The session was quick and painless. Afterwards I felt extremely relaxed. I was convinced that this was never going to work but I dutifully threw my cigarettes in the bin anyway. That first evening at home watching TV, I thought about cigarettes a few times which is understandable as I would normally smoke about 7 cigarettes in an evening. The next day I had my second laser treatment and by the end of the first week, I only thought of cigarettes if I saw somebody smoking. I had my 3rd laser session at the end of week 2 but by that time, I was hardly thinking about cigarettes at all. I declined the 4th session as I didn’t need it! Life is very stressful at the moment and of course I think about cigarettes from time to time but smoking no longer holds any appeal for me. I have tried almost everything to help me quit smoking and nothing has worked. I certainly did not expect laser to work. Everybody that knows me is amazed that I have given up smoking but nobody is more amazed than I am!!
Thank you so much Anni and thank you to my son for making me realise how selfish smoking is.’ M. Alzheimer’s help in Mar Menor by Keith Nicol IT’S NEVER easy to prepare for old age and if a loved one starts to suffer from Alzheimer’s or Dementia, unfortunately there is little medically that one can do about it. About 18 months ago a few English people whose partners, their husbands, wives or parents are suffering from Alzheimer’s and Dementia, started meeting regularly, thus forming their own support group. From this small beginning and with the help of Raquel Peña, the Alzheimer Mar Menor Association (AMMA) was formed. San Pedro Town Hall stepped in and provided the Association with a room in the Pensioners Club in San Pedro, where they now meet on a Wednesday and Friday. With the help of two trained Spanish professionals and a few English volunteers, the meetings have proved to be very successful, both for the patients and also the carers. AMMA cater for English and Spanish speakers with the entire group intergrating well together, united through a common cause. The Carers now have some free time to themselves, which is much needed, and the patients
Grendals Bane and Raquel Pena, two of the many strong supporters of AMMA
enjoy three hours of fun, dancing, drawing etc. Many individuals and organisations have donated money towards this project and on Wednesday 17th December representatives from Grendals Bane came along to the Centre to present AMMA with money that had been collected at two barn dances which they had held. AFA Remembers ANOTHER HUGE thank you to all who supported AFA Torrevieja, the region’s Alzheimer’s Association, was sent out this week. AFA wish to thank everyone who has supported them this year, adding; “At this time of year when there are so many ‘good causes’, Torrevieja’s Alzheimer’s Association is especially grateful to those organisations who remember us when they have their pantomime or Carol service or even their Christmas Party.” Matilde Sanchez, Presidenta AFA said:“We have had some really wonderful donations, from a magnificent pantomime donation of 3,000€ to a truly lovely raffle donation of 125€, with the carol services collections in between. We can assure everyone that all of this money will be put to very good use benefiting our abuelos: we no longer use the term patients, and their families who need your help more than ever at this time of year. Thank you thank you thank you.”
December, AMMA organised a Christmas party for patients and carers which was enjoyed by all. Raquel Peña´s dancers, ‘Flamenco for All’, came along to entertain everyone. The Centre is closed for the festive season but will reopen on Wednesday 7th January, 2015. Everyone involved with AMMA wanted to express their thanks to all who have donated to their cause and to wish everyone a Happy New Year.

tech Tablet not recognised as device DEAR AUNTY: Today I plugged my Tablet into my Computer but it was not shown as a device. A friend has told me that there was an article in the ‘Dear Aunty’ section recently giving information on what to do in this situation. I have been on holiday for several weeks and do not have any recent copies of your newspaper. I cannot find anything online, either. Help please! Mrs V E Lodge. Aunty says: On some tablets you may have to mount the storage in the tablet to get it to show up on Windows – i.e. you have to tell the tablet to be used as a USB device. Somewhere in your settings of your tablet will be a setting that looks like “Enable USB Mass Storage” or similar. Connect it to the computer, turn that on, and you should be good to go. Windows shouldn’t need any drivers for most tablets. However, according to the 3go website: http:// www.3go.es/en/FAQ?idpregunta=7 if your tablet is not recognized it could be that your PC does not have Windows Media Player 11 or higher. You have to install (or upgrade to 11) of Microsoft or Windows Update, or because the tablet is in USB de-bugging mode. You will need to disable USB de-bugging from [Applications] / [Settings] / [development options] uncheck USB de-bugging. You could also try a different USB slot, or a different USB cable to make sure they function correctly. Recent issues of RTN can be found on the website: http://www.roundtownnews.com

Having Skype issues HI AUNTY: When my family and I first installed Skype on our Vista and Windows 7 PCs, we could Skype each other if Skype showed us online. We would ring and it would pop up on the contact’s screen without them having to have opened the Skype app. Now with my Windows 8.1 pc and my family’s i-Pads and i-Phones we have to text each other to open our Skype apps in order to get it to ring on the other end’s device, even though Skype shows us all online and “dials”. I notice that we don’t hear the repeated dialling call that we used to, either. Can you help? Thanks, David Aunty says: This does seem to be a bit of a common problem with Skype these days. I too have had problems when I have tried called people. There has been no “ring ring” noise at my end, and sometimes not at the recipient’s end either. A close and restart of Skype usually solves this for me anyway.
Browser home pages HI AUNTY: I get MSN coming up before Google. I have only ever used Google before for all my emails etc. but it still doesn’t work: I haven’t got an MSN account – Valerie. Aunty says: I assume you mean your internet home page is now MSN and not Google? In which case go into your internet browser settings and change your home page to google. co.uk, which will display the Google UK page every time you start your Internet Explorer. Response: Many thanks. I have now changed my homepage to Google.

Special Concert for the New Year
IN WHAT is probably the closest classical concert as one can get to the ‘Last Night at the Proms’, on Tuesday evening, the Torrevieja Symphony Orchestra perform in the International Auditorium. The very special concert to bring int he New Year is full of great music, tinged with humour, and if previous performances are anything to go by, an expected 1,200 people in attendance. The Concert starts at the early time, for a Spanish performance, of 7.00pm allowing everyone to continue the Three Kings Day celebrations after the concert. It’s one of the few events on the cultural calendar where the Spanish like to dress up in their finery, so those attending should be away that black tie and cocktail dresses can be found in abundance. The Torrevieja Symphony Orchestra was formed just a few years ago; in 2008. Its repertoire includes all eras and styles of music, ranging from baroque to contemporary music. Soloists of renowned prestige, such as Diego Tárrega (Tenor), Oksana Solovieva (Violinist), as well as invited conductors, like Master Sainz Alfaro, have collaborated with the Orchestra. Its current first violin is Stanislav Tkach. The Orchestra has performed a number of symphonic-choral concerts at the new International Auditorium as well as in the ADDA of Alicante, undertaking works such as The Messiah by G.F. Haendel or the Requiem by
Mozart, with great success and acclaim by the public and the press. Last July, the Orchestra was very successful with the concerts it performed together with the Orfeón Donostiarra (Chorale of San Sebastián) in Torrevieja, as well as in the ADDA of Alicante, in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Habaneras and Polyphony Competition of Torrevieja. Jose Francisco Sanchez has the baton for this special event. He has been a guest conductor of the Torrevieja Musical Union, the Symphony Band of the Superior Conservatory of Music of Murcia, as well as with Choral and Orchestra Concerts with the Master Casanovas Chorale, with the Municipal “Ricardo Lafuente” Choral Group of Torrevieja, and with the prestigious Orfeón Donostiarra. He is currently Professor of Chamber Music at the Manuel Massotti Littel Superior Conservatory of Music of Murcia, and the Chief Conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of Torrevieja. Tickets are available in various prices from 15€, depending on seating and available from the Municipal Box Office or, space permitting, at the International Auditorium, from 5.00pm, until the start of the concert at 7.00pm.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin
Introductions to root-changing verbs THERE IS a substantial group of verbs in Spanish which behave differently from the standard verbs we have looked at so far in these articles. They are called root-changing verbs. Some people call them radical-changing verbs which is just a posher name for the same thing. The reason they have this name is because, as well as the ending changes which are exactly the same as with standard verbs, they make some small but significant changes to their roots. As a quick reminder of what roots are, they are the bit of verb that’s left once you take away the –ar, -er, and –ir endings. This could be one letter, as in the case of the verb “to see” - “ver” (ending –er; root - v), or several syllables, as in the verb “to reorganize” – “reorganizar” (ending –ar; root – reorganiz). We divide all verbs in this way for all sorts of different reasons, so it is a very important principle. Just as in the case of standard verbs, root changing verbs follow very predictable patterns. There are in fact three types of root changing verbs, and once we have learnt what they are, and a few basic things about them, there
really are no more mysteries. So, let’s get started straight away on our first type of root changing verb and look at how it works. The most common group is what is called the “e to ie” group. This refers to certain verbs that contain the letter “e” in the root. For example, the verb “cerrar” which means “to close” and is an –ar verb. The –ar endings are exactly the same as all other –ar verbs. They are completely regular, and have to be so, because they tell us who is performing the action of closing. So, let’s refresh our memory about the –ar verb endings. These are: a amos as áis a an Now let’s look at our root, in this case “cerr”. We are looking at the “e to ie” group, so this means that the root “cerr” changes to “cierr”. However, it only does so in four out of the six forms, as follows: cierro cerramos cierras cerráis cierra cierran

Suduko Answer
(which mean, just in case we’ve forgotten: I close, you close, he/she/it closes, we close, you close, they close). So, if we look at this pattern carefully we will see that all the singular forms change from cerr to cierr, as does the third person plural “they” form, but the first and second persons plural (we and you forms) do not make this change. The reason for this is to do with where the beat of the word goes when we are speaking. Where the changes occur, the beat goes on the root, and where the changes do not occur (cerramos, cerráis) the beat goes on the endings. This is actually a very important point which we will explore in more detail next week. Just to finish off this initial foray into the fascinating subject of root-changing verbs though, I will answer straight away the question that comes to everyone’s mind sooner or later, which is: “How do we know which verbs are root-changing and which ones aren’t?” The answer is quite simple: “We don’t!” We just have to get used to each one as we go along. Well, I think that’s enough excitement for one week, but at least we have made a start.
A Christmas cracker from the U3A
THE TITLE of the U3A’s Christmas Concert was ‘A Christmas Cracker’and the performance played to a packed theatre certainly warranted that title. The variety of songs from rock to classics was amazing. The choir excelled in some of the difficult John Rutter arrangements and displayed depth of feeling in the musical Christmas story. Humour came from Penny, Amanda, Quinta and Jenny and pure joy from Linda’s solos. Director Mary Anderton congratulated the choir and thanked everyone for their hard work that resulted in something very special. All ticket money was donated to the Maite Boronat Centre Charity in Calpe.

Beached Lions By Keith Nicol BRIGHT SUNSHINE offered a complete alternative to the wet 2013 Lions event as hundreds of people flocked to La Zenia beach on Christmas Day 2014 to sing carols. The weather was excellent with warm sunshine and very little breeze and right on schedule at 12.30pm. JB Brass struck up the first chord to entertain the throng with Christmas Carols and other popular festive tunes as Jingle Bells, White Christmas, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and many others, which had everyone singing along. It was a truly European Day with people from all corners of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Finland, Denmark and of course Spain, enjoying the festivities. An interesting feature of the day was the presence of a Drone hovering over the beach for most of the day, as possibly someone
was trying out their Christmas present. As usual the Torrevieja Costa Lions Club were present, raising funds this year for ALPE, the educational and social welfare centre for handicapped children and young adults in Torrevieja. The Lions collection took place during the JBB concert and Lion President Iain Bennett is delighted to announce that 788.30€ was raised in just one hour. In addition to the collection from the crowd, the Lion President also received two exceptional individual donations, one from a gentleman from Quesada who donated 1,000€ and the other from a group in Los Dolces who donated 200€, so on the day Lions Charities benefited to the total of 1,988.30€. There are currently a few gallons of whisky to be won in aid of the Lions charities, one is located in Monos bar, Quesada, another in Lo Marabu, Quesada and one in Montes Bar in Los
Montesinos. All funds raised will go to ALPE, Torrevieja. The bottles in The Marabu Lounge and Quesada Fish and Chips have already been won. On behalf of the Club, the Lion President thanks everyone who has participated in the prize draws and donated at the beach. Iain added: “The Lions have once again had a very successful year, with events and fund raising we have been able to help many people, who for some reason or other, find themselves in need. Undoubtedly we will face new challenges again in 2015, for which we are, with your continued support, well prepared. May I offer my sincere thanks to everyone who has supported the Torrevieja Costa Lions Club during 2014. Early in 2015, our Club will celebrate JB Brass its 10th Charter Anniversary. May I, on entertain behalf of all Lion members wish you all on a very happy Christmas and a peaceful, Christmas prosperous year in 2015. Day

ANOTHER ANNUAL Christmas Day event is the Nook Bar Santa swim. Once again at 10am this year a group of nine Santa’s led John Wing from the Nook Bar, Las Filipinas braved the sea at La Zenia Beach to raise money for two local charities: AFA the Torrevieja Alzheimer’s Association and San Miguel de Salinas’s Finca la Castellana Animal Welfare Centre, for which they raised a huge 900€. Not to be beaten by the boys at 11am Ruth McShane, one of the bar staff at the Nook, demurely strolled down the beach in her Santa outfit and to the cheers of the male ‘Santas’ and plunged into the sea for a swim. Ruth raised another fantastic sum of 450€ for her charity, ‘Cancer Research’. Linsey Smart, one of the Nook’s owners said said she was so proud of her Santas and the support they received from the Nook customers. Anyone who would like to make a further donation to boost the funds of these very worthwhile charitable causes, need just drop into the Nook Bar, Las Filipinas, to do so.

Rascals give away AFTER TWO very successful and very entertaining Christmas spectaculars, the Rascals have been giving away to worthwhile causes. In Los Montesinos they presented a much needed additional hospital bed, hoist and wheelchair to the Social Services Department while in Torrevieja, just over 1,000₏ was donated to APANEE. Christmas is a very special time of year for the Rascals, who not only perform on stage but visit a number of establishments, where they also perform and entertain. As they do every year, presents were bought and delivered to the students of ALPE and given out at the annual Christmas party. More presents and surprises were then handed out to all the elderly at the home in Rosales and a donation of food was taken to San Miguel for the poor and needy, from a collection made following a Christmas singalong in that area. For those readers interested in finding out more or possibly getting involved in the fun and social life offered by the Rascals, it will shortly be time to start rehearsals for their next production which will be staged in May and June. The first rehearsal will be at Sacko´s Bar El Limonar, Torrevieja, on Thursday 8th January at 11am. Anyone interested in joining Rascals as a dancer, singer or to become a valuable member of the backstage or support The Rascals staff, should come along to see them at this rehearsal. Focus on Golf Powered by Campbell Lamont Golf, partnered by BayRadio
A New Year and new horizons By Tony Myles AT ONE more year I would not boggle - except that when I jog these days I joggle! Paraphrased from Ogden Nash. It is one year since I wrote the first of these columns for Campbell and what a great year it has been. The only downside is that, despite my resolve to lower my handicap, it remains firmly where it was at this time last year. On reflection I guess that is not a bad thing given that I am one year older and therefore the intervening twelve months have done nothing to diminish may capability. So whilst my ability remains unaffected, it is worth reflecting on some of the major milestones for the Campbell Lamont organisation. Every aspect of your game is catered for by Campbell Lamont and in the past year each one has shown remarkable growth at a time when many others are struggling for mere survival. Here are the main activities : Green Fee bookings: Despite the increase in VAT which bumped green fees up by 13%, in 2014 Green Fee bookings increased by 25% from the previous year, reaching a record 35,000. Holiday bookings: Golf in the Costas continues to be the most popular location for golfers from all over Europe and in 2014 holiday bookings were up by 30%. New Sponsors: Major companies continue to demonstrate their confidence in Campbell Lamont and two new notable sponsors have joined the list. Campbell is delighted to add Vicente Gandia Winery and Continental Wealth Management to the team of supporters. Campbell Lamont Golf Leagues now sponsored by Ford, La Sella Golf Resort, Continental Wealth Management and Vicente Gandia Wines continued its remarkable growth and is on track to become the most important amateur golf competition in Europe. There were over 9000 golfers throughout Spain competing
to represent their respective clubs/societies at the Grand Final back in June at La Sella Golf Resort. With all expenses covered by Campbell Lamont the Grand Final was held over four rounds with 8 pairs representing Spanish societies and 8 pairs representing British societies. Congratulations to the winners, Tony Morgan and Terry Moore from Forum Golf Society. Competitions: Another great year with an increase in competitions. In total there were thirty five 18 hole competitions along with the addition of twenty six weekly 9 hole competitions. The vast majority of these being fully subscribed with more than 80 players. Charity: The Campbell Lamont organisation remains a major contributor to local charities and three of this year’s Texas scramble events were specifically dedicated for that purpose. Raising funds for Grant a Wish, Help of Denia and Cancer Care Javea. Over €6000 was raised during these 3 events alone. Summer League: The Summer League continues to be fiercely contested with 12 local societies competing throughout the summer months. The eventual winners were Montgo GS. Golf Shop: This was the first full year of trading in the new shop in Ondara where more brands have been added to a comprehensive range of golf essentials. For every golfer it has now become the default option where they will find everything they require from tees to lessons and all at the very best prices and backed by unrivalled service. Thanks to your support the shop has been a resounding success and continues to grow. Costa Blanca International Cup: This was the first year of this 4 day competition which was held at Oliva Nova and La Sella golf. Players from seven different countries competed in a two day singles and two day pairs competition. The Pairs winners were Malcolm & Julia Ginger and the Singles was

won by Pierre Van Der Zee. 2015: In 2015 the strategy is to build on the strong foundation and grow the business by modest expansion. Plans are already in place to increase the number of competitions along with introducing more of the top courses south of Alicante. The most exciting aspect of the business will be the creation of a new virtual outlet. Look out for more details in the coming weeks about CLGOLF + a members only club. Why are we doing this? Simply to be able to offer even better deals to our customers. Membership will be open to everyone and members will have exclusive access to offers that are not available to the general public. Finally thank you to all clients and friends for your fantastic support in 2014 and we will endeavour to deserve it as we move forward into the NEW YEAR. From everyone involved in CL GOLF - we wish you a Happy New Year and wonderful golf.

Making a success of youth football OVER CHRISTMAS in Torrevieja, Elda, Alicante

SAM LEE from Chester, a 14-year-old schoolboy on holiday in Spain, has landed an enormous 8ft catfish weighing a staggering 208lbs. The fish is 2.5 metres in length and is considerably bigger than Sam! The monster fish did not give in without a fight and Sam battled for more than half an hour to land the giant catfish at the River Ebro in Catalonia. The fish was weighed and photographed before being returned to the water.
ACATEC elite players with 25 Russian players last summer
by Keith Nicol The four locations offered a special football Campus organised by Alicante based Sports Education and Promotion group, ACATEC, under the leadership of Sports Director Angel Hernandez Linares. Angel was the former Coach at Hercules CF “B” and took over the coaching of the La Liga BBVA Hércules CF side when they were hit by financial worries a few seasons ago. Angel helped run and organise the very successful Hércules CF Youth program at the club and brings with him an array of former coaches, players and experience to ACATEC, with Academy level training that is not offered at the majority of local Municipal school systems, where many coaches have not obtained more than a basic coaching certificate. Because of his different, academy based training methods, coaches
and scouts from local, regional and national clubs are paying notice to his methods, with many of those attending his courses, being offered positions at better clubs. His philosophy is to start training players from as young an age as possible, and most importantly, making it a fun and social activity for the boys and girls that take part. Last weekend ACATEC was invited to Madrid to take part in the First I Canillas Chrismas Cup, 2014. This Benjamin Category, for those nine and under, also featured academy teams from Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Rayo Vallecano, with the team from Rondilla being crowned champions, after a penalty shootout. Angel said; “I’m very proud to be asked to compete in the tournament. It goes to show that we are doing something right in promoting a fun
and competitive environment for local children to play football and they were all very excited to play alongside the teams from Madrid.” ACATEC are also attracting interest from Russian Clubs, with more and more clubs coming to the region in the winter to train and play friendlies against local teams. Angel previously held talks with FC Torrevieja about establishing an Academy system in the City, which is still a possibility should funding be forthcoming, however any academy would be completely independent and based upon the ACATEC system. Angel added.; “Torrevieja has an incredible talent base. At the moment we have seven preBenjamin players training in Alicante with us and we were delighted to be able to use the excellent facilities of Torrevieja’s Sports City over Christmas.”
San Javier Golf Society Texas Scramble THE LAST game for the society before Christmas was a 2-ball Texas Scramble and what a lovely day it turned out to be - a nice 18º in sunny December. It was all very close but winners were Barry Butterworth and Paul Matthews with a net 69.2 score. Barry won this without a lot of help from Paul who lost 7 balls in his round and Paul got some stick after being carried by an 80-year-old - all good fun! In second place were Sandy and David Barns with 70.4 and third on 70.8 were Sandra Twentyman and Ken McKee. The Society’s next game is on Monday, 5th January at La Serena. 1st Tee time is 8.20am: The format is TEAM - 6, 6, 6 Wishing you all a Happy New Year.

road test
Tim Saunders Independent unbiased car reviewer
Land Rover Discovery 4 TDV6 HSE INFALLIBILITY IS a dangerous feeling and often results in disappointment, I am told. Often drivers of 4x4s seem to possess this quality in spades, tackling most situations on the road with an unattractive ‘bolshy’ attitude. WHEN BEHIND the wheel of the hugely capable Land Rover Discovery 4 TDV6 HSE you can see why as the commanding driving position, the superb build quality and the luxurious interior give the driver that ‘king of the road’ feeling. Clambering onto the leather-clad driver’s seat it is clear that my surroundings are positively luxurious. A straight grained walnut finish contributes to the elegance of the interior. An array of technology assists: from the seven inch full colour centre console touch-screen for controlling key vehicle functions, to front and rear parking aids and phone integration. At a quick glance I spy all the off-roading controls I might need: a television and even that much sought after DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) radio. During the test it snows heavily, so much so that all major airports cancel flights and it takes all night for some office workers to travel home. On one occasion there is over six inches of snow covering the whole vehicle and so I clear as much of it off as possible and then get driving. However, a quantity falls off the roof on the windscreen wipers, as I manoeuvre and they handle it as if it were just light rain, brushing it off the screen with ease. It’s minus one degrees and I am cold so it is gratifying to discover the heated steering wheel and heated seats front and rear. Outside the picturesque winter wonderland provides the perfect environment to put the Disco through its paces.
For the duration of the test I drive in ‘ice mode’. Only the foolhardy would venture off road in these treacherous conditions but this is a test and Land Rover would not look favourably upon me if their vehicle remained on the tarmac. Selecting the low switch and remaining in ice mode we drive through a thickly-snow-covered and hilly woodland and it handles the snow and the ice underneath well, only losing grip a couple of times. It is on exiting that it comes unstuck. I try reversing back the way I came but it doesn’t like this one bit, the wheels spinning as I apply the accelerator as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. So I drive forward, starting to inwardly panic, not for me but for my wife (who is expecting our second child shortly) and little Harriett, who is happily saying, “Oh dear” in the back. As we point north I move forward and then back kicking the accelerator down and thankfully the Land Rover climbs the hill and gets us back on to the road.
