MARTINA SCHEURER, the popular Councillor of the Coast for the Orihuela Costa and member of the Green Party, Los Verdes, has decided to step down and run in the next municipal election. As the zones third Councillor of the Coast during the last mandate, Martina and her assistant Heike Schug, faced an uphill task trying to do the best they could for the residents of the Orihuela Costa. Citing her reasons as the need to look after both her health and her marriage, Martina will be missed by many as not only was she multi-lingual, allowing her to reach out to both the residents and raise any issues in council meetings in Spanish, but she herself is an Orihuela Costa resident and thus could see for herself what was happening on a daily basis along the coast. Since taking over the role from Pedro Mancebo, she has tirelessly worked on a number of high profile projects but possibly because of the messy four, then three, then dual party government in

Orihuela City, with the PSOE and Los Verdes being a minority for the past year or so, many of the important projects have been bogged down in paperwork or political manoeuvres and thus many of the projects have remained at a frustrating standstill over the last couple of years. Scheurer did agree with CLARO councillor Bob Houliston that the Coast is not a priority for the majority of Councillors in Orihuela City with only a couple of councillors showing any interest in getting projects passed and completed in the area, despite the fact that the Orihuela Costa has a larger population and thus adds more tax money to the over coffers of the Orihuela Town Hall. Martina also expressed her disappointment that only around 200 people from the thousands of local residents of the Orihuela Costa who could have registered their right to do so, bothered to register their intent to do, during the window of opportunity up to December 30th, 2014. Every legal European resident, plus a few other nationalities, have the right to vote, if they have registered with the padron office their wish to do so. However, some of those on the electoral role may not be in Spain on May 24th but they still have the opportunity to vote by post. All the rules and regulations for the May election have yet to be announced but if you would like to vote and know or think you will out of the country, you have the opportunity to register your intent to do so, at the ORAI office in Torrevieja. The Director of the Foreign Residents Office, Jean Paul Murelo is taking names and contact details of those who would like more information and can help with the slightly complicated process of registration. Just stop by his office any morning and leave your details and he will contact you when the INS have released the electoral role and required paperwork. According to the INS website, the postal vote modalities are for voters resident in

Spain who may apply to vote by post by completing an application form that’s available from any Spanish Post Office, and sending it to the Provincial Delegation of the Electoral Census Office of the province where he or she is registered. Voters must sign the application form and check that the postal worker stamps and dates it as appropriate. Voters who request a postal vote are not able to vote in person at the polling station. In order to facilitate this paperwork, the Electoral Census Office sends all voters, prior to the calling of elections, a letter containing an application form for postal voting. Jean Paul took over the mantle of OARI from Graham Knight who was the originator of the position just over a year ago and during that time, with the office now located in the Office of Tourism, the department can now offer more services. Should you have any questions about your rights, the padron, residencia, permits, event organisation, births, deaths, marriages, etc, then please email Jean Paul for his advice. If there are Town Hall issues, things that need doing urgently in your community then you can contact Jean Paul and he will pass on your concerns to the correct department. You can also find a huge amount of information about all Town

Hall departments on the municipal website: www.Torrevieja.es, including contact details for each department and many documents and facilities that you can fill in and perform online through the website. La Siesta-San Luis residents to meet on Thursday ONE OF Torrevieja’s most ambitious park regeneration projects is soon to start at the entrance to El Chaperall. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the meeting with Torrevieja’s Mayor, Eduardo Dolon, which had been planned for Monday, has now been rescheduled for Thursday, February 10th, at 4.30pm at Casa Ventura. It’s an open meeting and all residents are welcome to attend to hear about the plans for the area, space permitting within the Casa Ventura annex. Last month, the president of the Generalitat, Alberto Fabra, along with the Minister of Economy, Industry, Tourism and Employment, Maximo Buch, President of the Provincial Council, Luisa Pastor, mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, and many mayors and councillors from all over Valencia took the opportunity to visit the park, before a planned meeting at the Centro de Turismo (CDT) of Torrevieja. The area is being rejuvenated by the students of Employment Workshop “Mediterranean VIII” to landscape an area of 40,000 square meters, located in the urbanization El Chaparral. Over the period 2011 to 2014 the Mediterranean Employment Workshops VI-VII and now VIII, has involved the training of more than 200 unemployed people of the town. The investment for the eight projects was for a total of 4,692,644€, of which the Generalitat Valenciana has invested 2,205,075€, the City of Torrevieja 2,421,992€ and the Province of Alicante 65,578€. Anyone interested in finding out more about Torrevieja’s employment workshops is very welcome to attend the meeting on Thursday at Casa Ventura.

Mayor improves his English ANOTHER ONE of Torrevieja’s educational success stories, is that of the English conversation classes, held at the CIAJ office. by Keith Nicol On Thursday, Torrevieja’s Mayor Eduardo Dolon took time out with the Councillor for Education, Rosario Martinez, to find out more about what has made the classes such an outstanding success. The courses are free and are mostly attended by students from the final years of the Official Language School, who find that by spending a few hours with native English speakers vastly improves their knowledge of ‘everyday’ English usage and especially their pronunciation. Thus, all that the dozen course core volunteers have to do, is host a table, pick any subject of interest, and chat away while helping the

Spanish students with their grammar, if required. It’s as easy as that. Class Coordinator Crystal East said; “For many of the Spanish, it’s the very first time that they have had a real conversation with an English speaker. Up until now, they have only been exposed to structured English classes. For some of our English volunteers and the Spanish, it’s the very first time that they have had a conversation and exchanged different viewpoints, in a relaxed and casual atmosphere. Since the classes started in November 2012, Crystal has overseen more than 250 students per semester improving their standards of English, in an environment that’s impossible to replicate in a

typical classroom. As more students attend the free classes, more volunteers are required to ‘shoot the breeze’ with them. The classes do not have any special structure except on the odd occasion when students bring course work to class to ask for advice. The CIAJ has four permanent staff in their office to help and advise on all youth matters in the city. Domingo is on the door to greet visitors and help take care of the facility, Gustavo and Rosa and on the main desk to hand out information, and Lucia handles the overall Valencian youth policies and programs. The English courses take place four times a week at the CIAJ, The Centre for Information and Youth

Counterfeit goods raid THREE CHINESE nationals have been arrested by the National Police for selling counterfeit goods in several shops across Benidorm. The arrests were made after an investigation, which started late last year following information received of shops selling false luxury brand goods. In total the police confiscated 1,196 items, among which were handbags, wallets, watches, headphones and clothing. The officers belonged to a specially formed arm of the National Police, which deal with crimes against the sale of counterfeit goods.

Crashed helicopter carried nearly a ton of hashish AUTHORITIES HAVE recovered two badly burned bodies from a helicopter that crashed on Tuesday near Cortes de la Frontera, Malaga, while following an unauthorised flight path. Up to a ton of hashish has been discovered in the wreckage. More than 100 tonnes of illegal hashish have been seized by Spanish police since June 2013.

Benidorm mum sells her baby for cash A BENIDORM judge has handed a one year suspended sentence to a woman who attempted to sell her baby for 5,000€ to a childless couple living in Cullera. by Jan Gamm The child was exchanged for cash in 2008 just three days after its birth in Denia hospital. There were allegedly three other people involved acting as ‘agents’ in the sale. The mother said she needed the money to pay her debts. The couple who tried to purchase the baby were each given a six month suspended sentence for their involvement. None of the defendants had previous criminal records.

A rising death toll on Spain’s roads FIGURES PROVIDED by the DGT (Traffic) show that on Spanish roads in January there were 87 deaths, an increase of 42% compared to last year. The most casualties were recorded in Castilla 7 Leon and Andalucia. Nine regional communities have been affected by a rising death toll on the roads compared to a year ago.

Barca boss charged with fraud

FC BARCELONA President Josep Maria Bartomeu has been charged with tax fraud and is expected to appear before the National Court in Madrid on 13th February. The Club is alleged to be implicated in tax evasion over the 2013 signing of Brazilian star Neymar: the prosecutor alleges that Barca’s former president Sandro Rosell paid more for Neymar than the €57 million declared, with an alleged €2.85 million tax shortfall.

Pilar de la Horadada drug yacht PLEASURE SAILING took on an entirely new meaning on Monday when Guardia Civil intercepted a sailboat with half a ton of cocaine in Pilar de la Horadada. by Keith Nicol TWO PEOPLE, a father (70) and son (43), have been arrested and the operation is still open, so further arrests are not ruled out. A Guardia Civil spokesman said that 465 kilos of cocaine were seized, with a street value on the illicit market that could have exceeded 16 million euros. The government delegate in Valencia, Serafin Castilian, along with commanders of the Guardia Civil, displayed the seized drugs which were put on display in an armed and protected location in Alicante, for the press. The events date back to the afternoon of January 28th, when the Guardia Civil became aware of strange movements taking place on board a

boat off the port of Torre de la Horadada, in the municipality of Pilar de la Horadada, raising the suspicions of the agents. The Guardia Civil organized a monitoring and control of the boat and its crew and upon inspecting the vessel, they found thirteen packages of drugs which, after analysis, proved to contain a total of 465 kilograms of cocaine. Driving Licenses in Spain by Jan Gamm RTN has received a number of enquiries this week regarding driving licenses in Spain, the legal requirement to change driving licenses to a Spanish one and the sequence of events that govern the need for such changes. The law says that if you are resident in Spain for more than six months you are required to apply for residency. Spanish residents require Spanish driving licenses and all residents are encouraged to clear their relevant paperwork as soon as possible. A new resident can drive on their old license for up to two years, after which any license other than a Spanish one is illegal. However, during a roadside police check where you might be asked to produce identification your residency would lead to questions such as to why you do not hold a Spanish driving license, how long you have lived in Spain, so many people prefer to get their driving paperwork completed as soon as possible. The driving license changeover can be inconvenient as the application process requires giving up your old license, after which processing can take several months. And although you would be issued with a provisional document enabling you to drive in Spain, you would not be able to use it to hire a car elsewhere in Europe should you need to do so. Recent police checks focused on mothers taking their children to and from school. On checking licenses it was revealed that many of the parents driving back and forth on school runs had been resident in Spain for much longer than two years yet still retained only a British or International License. If the police find you have been driving on a non-Spanish license for more than two years then a total driving ban is a possibility. In order to apply for a Spanish Driving License you will need: A Padron certificate from your town of residence

A green Residencia certificate A valid passport A recent passport sized photograph A requirement is to surrender an unexpired UK (or other EU) licence until a new Spanish license is issued, applicants will be issued with a provisional document to enable them to drive legally. To apply for your license directly you must first make an appointment with Trafico in your province. Make your own checks to ensure you have all the legal documentation to process your application. If you prefer to have someone handle such matters on your behalf, you can always make an appointment with a reputable ‘gestor’ who will unravel the mysteries of the licensing laws for you at a reasonable fee.

UK to crack down on treatment for foreign patients THE UK’s National Health Service intends to crack down on treatment for foreign patients. From now on visitors from Spain and other European countries will be required to present a European Health Insurance Card to register with a GP in the UK after it emerged that only a fraction of recoverable charges for treatment has been processed by the UK authorities. It is claimed that between 2012 and 2013 only £5.5m of the £230m due from Spain was actually recovered; £17.5m from Ireland when actually £211m was owed; £1m from France against £128m provided in health care and Italy and Greece paid under £1m each respectively despite owing nearly £15m between them. However, failure to recover costs for health care is widely thought to be attributable to administrative inefficiency on the part of clinical institutions in the UK rather than a reluctance to pay by foreign governments.

Rajoy and Sánchez unite against Jihadism

PP PRIME Minister Mariano Rajoy and Pedro Sánchez, the General Secretary of the PSOE, have signed a state agreement at the Moncloa Palace that unites the two parties in the fight against Jihadism. Sánchez said that he considered the joint undertaking would provide “better efficiency in the fight against crimes of terrorism.” Rajoy put forward a date of 24th February for a State of the Nation Debate, which was agreed by Sánchez.

by Jack Troughton RECORD NUMBERS flocking to the 35th international tourism show ‘Fitur 2015’ in Madrid underline the recovery of the crucial tourist market. Attendance was 12% up on last year and more than 225,000 visitors went through the doors during the five days of the show, including 126,000 tourism professionals. Opened by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, there were 9,400 companies from 165 countries exhibiting at Fitur, showing its importance in the global tourism market. And organisers said the record figures illustrated the growing “climate of optimism” in the tourist sector and the show remained a “benchmark” for the international holiday industry. Once again as part of the Valencia Community stands, towns from the Marina Alta

were well represented at Fitur – making presentations aimed at bringing even more visitors to boost local economies and provide much-needed jobs. Valencia hopes to attract 75 million international visitors to the region by 2020 and the towns of Calpe, Benissa, Teulada-Moraira, Benitachell, Javea, and Denia were keen to promote they are open for business all 12 months of the year. While the beautiful coastline of the Costa Blanca remains a major attraction; food, wine, culture, and sporting activities are all being actively promoted – as well as the area’s healthy climate. Javea, represented by Mayor Jose Chulvi and Tourism councillor Antonio Miragall, has a new logo that sums up the drive to bring more people to the town: “You deserve more than summer holidays”.

The local people are amazing DON’T KNOW if you know about the park in La Siesta – it’s nice that it’s finally getting done but there’s been a man living in the park in a wooden shed for years. Instead of leaving him there or even getting him to help, they have moved him off and he is now sleeping in the open air on the field in El Chaparral. I have put a comment on the Facebook site and omg the local people are amazing! Giving him plastic sheeting to help keep him dry; others taking food and bedding as I have done. He is friendly enough and I think he would be happy to go back to his wooden hut on the field as he had been there for years. Just thought this should be highlighted in your paper… Jill Melenchon

NIGEL HOPKINS and all of his singers and musicians put on a truly wonderful evenings performance of Music of the Night on Saturday 31st January. Afterwards the Samaritans in Spain undertook a bucket shake to raise funds and the audience was extremely generous on the night raising an amazing 565€. Then Nigel himself donated enough to take the amount to an incredible 650€. I would like to add my thanks to the thanks of all our volunteers and all our callers for this generosity. More people should follow suit

I READ your item in RTN with interest regarding the cancellation of the Heating Allowance and support Keith and Judy Braddock’s comments in every way: more people should follow suit. I think their suggestion that friends and relatives should write to their MPs is correct and to the point. I too feel badly let down by the present so-called ‘Pensioners friend’ the Conservative Party and I already sent a letter of complaint to my old MP in the UK. I strongly feel that all the pensioner ex-pats should somehow organise themselves to collectively send their feelings to their politicians making it plain as to how they vote - which could have an effect upon the results of the General Election in May. I pointed out to Conservative MP Neil Carmichael that at 77 I live with my wife on our miserable excuse for a pension, trying to make ends meet throughout our retirement in Spain. We save the British taxpayer thousands of pounds by not asking for assistance in any way, unlike many immigrants and other scroungers, having paid our dues and taxes all our working lives in the UK while running our own construction company in Berkeley. The Costa Blanca is acknowledged to be warm for much of the year but from December through to April, as Spanish houses are not as well insulated as British ones, we struggle to stay warm by using mobile gas heaters (we cannot afford to turn on the central heating) which generate condensation and unhealthy fumes. So for the first time in 50 years I am considering which party to support in the May election. And why should I support a party that intends to withdraw a well-earned benefit from pensioners who have decided to live abroad? Does every British citizen receive the payment of £200/£300 regardless of his or her monthly income? And also people who really do not need it? Calpe makes a splash DERELICT BUILDINGS designed by the renowned and award-winning Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill are to be protected and restored as an international water sports centre in Calpe. by Keith Nicol The former social club – a restaurant, bar, and swimming pool - at La Cala Manzanera needed special permission from Central Government to be restored and converted because they fall under coastal laws. However, when Calpe’s Mayor Cesar Sanchez was in Madrid last week at the annual Fitur international tourism fair he took the opportunity to speak to the government minister in charge of the coasts – and won permission for the project. As reported last year, Calpe Town Hall has already obtained permission to protect and restore two apartment blocks designed by Bofill at La Manzanera Resort by having them listed as buildings of special interest. The La Cala Manzanera buildings by the sea are said to be in a dangerous condition – their redevelopment will not only preserve them but also provide employment. Torrevejense, Damien Omen, ignored by Paraguay DAMIEN OMEN, is one of Torrevieja’s own; a former youth player who was picked up by Atletico Madrid at 15 and who now trains with their first team. However, Damien is one of many European based youth players who have been ignored by the Paraguayan Football Association. The talented eighteen year old is one of the jewels of Atletico Madrid and dreams of being part of the ‘Albirroja U20’ squad. Damien is one of the many Paraguayans who had to leave Paraguay as a child. Like many others, he went to Spain with his mother when he was just nine as she wanted a better future for him. Damian not only plays for Atletico but being a member of their Academy system, is also studying at an institute, which is paid for by the club. As with many Academies, the Madrid team requires that their players gain educational qualifications, as well as being sportsmen. Besides offering him room and board and a place at their centre of excellence and paying for schooling, the ‘albirrojo’ also supports him financially to cover his personal expenses. “I’m not complaining. I think what you get is more than enough, depending on how much you spend each week,” said the talented youth. The Paraguayan footballer confessed that his dream, rather than his obsession, is to break into the Paraguayan national Under Twenty team along with awaiting his opportunity to feature with the first team of Atletico Madrid.

by Keith Nicol MASA INTERNATIONAL Hotel was the setting for the Spanish segments of ‘Trained to Kill’. The latest film production from director Bill Little, has begun filming on the Costa Blanca. After completing about three quarters of the film in Scotland, the actors and crew filming the climatic scenes to the film over the next couple of months around the Costa Blanca. ‘Trained to Kill’ is the latest production to choose the Torrevieja area as their base, with both Spanish and International production teams benefiting from the warmer climate and perfect winter sunshine for their films. The first day of filming in Spain brought together some very well known local personalities for the Spanish sequences. Director Bill Little said: “We had perfect weather and the most wonderful of settings for the first scene with the Spanish cast at the Masa International Hotel in La Mata. Big thanks to Hazel

M Davie (Production Manager), and actors, radio personality and performer Tony Capaldi, Spanish lightweight boxing champion Emiliano Casal, the talented and well known Michael Redfern, former boxer and local raconteur Charlie Breaker and his daughter, Simon Giddens, Victor Gomez, William Mendieta and Antonio Valentino and especially to the Masa International Hotel Manager and staff for all their help.” Over the next six weeks, filming is also scheduled onboard local yachts, at Torre del Moro, Marina Salinas, San Miguel, Torremendo and other ‘secret’ locations, as the film starts to wrap up. More filming with the main characters is also under way with the Scottish actors and crew in Scotland, with lead actor Chris Capaldi and top Northern Irish Model Caroline Connor, due in Spain just before Easter. DURING THE sell-out performances of ‘Panto Frolics’, the second pantomime by the Smile Charity Group, 2180€ was raised for the four nominated charities supported by the group. Representatives of the Charities - ‘the Benijófar Crisis Appeal’, ‘Torrevieja Stroke Support’, ‘The Alzheimers Association’ & ‘the Elche Childrens Care Home’, were each presented with a cheque for 544.83€ by members of Smile. Panto Frolics was penned by John Wallace and directed by Pat Thielmann. Grateful thanks goes to both of them for the time, energy and enthusiasm given to produce a show of such quality. And the effort put in by the sound and light engineers and back-stage helpers must also be congratulated. Rescue Centre walks neglected mare to safety after trailer breakdown A NEGLECTED horse rescued from Formentera del Segura had to be walked 4km to Rojales after the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre’s horse trailer broke down! by Keith Nicol Founders Sue and Rod Weeding had received a number of calls about the mare, kept in a small rubbish-strewn yard with very little food or water. The horse’s owner agreed to hand the malnourished mare over to the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre last Sunday following advice from police. But Sue and Rod were forced to walk the mare the 45-minute journey home to their centre after the axle snapped on their aging horse trailer. “The trailer is 15 years old, has rescued well over 100 horses and done thousands of kilometers,” said Sue. “We’re going to get it repaired, but really we need a new and reliable trailer because we have to be ready to a rescue an animal at any time. We are constantly taking horses to Barcelona for specialist veterinarian treatment and if we have an emergency at our centre our horses are always rushed to the Alicante horse hospital. Also we transport most of the horse feed in it so the trailer is in daily use.

“We never manage to get enough money together to buy a new trailer because there’s always another rescue, another emergency or surgery... the horses come first.” Several supporters have pledged money via Facebook to help fund a new trailer and Sue says any further donations would be gratefully received. “We’re lucky this mare was a local rescue and we were able to get her out of that hellhole even without the trailer,” Sue said. Purchases made at the centre’s network of eight charity shops also help fund the feeding and care of the 87 horses, ponies and donkeys that live at the centre. The amount was revealed at the annual conference of District North of The Royal British Legion in Spain in Alicante last Friday. The result of the annual collection was described as “fantastic” and “astonishing” and represents an increase of 15,000€ on the previous year. And a Legion spokesman added: “Many congratulations to all those who worked so hard to bring this about and especially to those who contributed so much to this great charity.” The money raised by the district is used to support former servicemen and women and their families in Spain, and the conference was told the welfare team continued to work hard. “During the past year we received a number of welfare inquiries and our busy welfare case workers once again volunteered to visit beneficiaries in the area.”

by Irena Bodnarec CRICKET IS a game that is gaining popularity here in Spain, as was evident last weekend at the Woodbridge Oval in Albir. Three youth teams – Sporting Alfaz in red, Torrevieja in all blue and La Manga Kings in mixed blue, took part in the 20/20 league. Back in 2013, the ICC Europe – International Cricket Council bought in a new initiative to encourage more youngsters to play the game and so street 20 was born. Spain was allocated funding from the ICC and Director of Spanish Cricket, Neil Brook organized events in different regions, after which the Valencia and Murcia regions started an indoor league, which last year was won by Sporting Alfaz. The teams are made

up of players aged between 9 and 18 years old and although predominantly boys, there is the odd girl too. The teams travel to each other’s grounds throughout the season – thanks to the support of parents and coaches. It is a terrific way to develop the youngsters both physically and mentally as well as building up team spirit and camaraderie. Next Sunday, 15th between 10am and 4pm they will be playing the Indoor League at the Pabellon / Indoor Sports Centre in Alfaz del Pi followed by an Open Day, with everyone welcome. Alfaz train under the guidance of coach Mark Perman, every Sunday morning at the Woodbridge Oval – just behind the Kaktus hotel on the beachfront. production about a woman who has a Compulsive Cleaning Disorder. Not content with being on film and television, this pint-sized powerhouse will be treading the boards on stage in April in the ADHOC Players next production, the much anticipated ‘Sex and the Short working Week’- a Comedy set in the time of the UK Miners’ Strike. Vicky will play a ‘Lady of the night’. Writers Philip Stephen Routledge and Billie Anthony’Gaddess, who

ONE OF the most popular local theatrical groups is Torrevieja’s Actors Studio. Under the Direction of David Whitney they perform a couple of different, original shows each year, usually written by David himself. The Actors Studio have been a bit quiet as late due to cast ill health and holiday commitments but they would like their fans to know they are still very much alive and kicking. Last year’s show, “Granny’s Hen Night”, a comedy from the pen of David Whitney, was a huge success and it was hoped that they would perform the play again at a later date but casting became too much of a problem, mainly due to illness. As actors come and go, are on holiday or have other commitments, David is on the lookout for a few more thespians to boost their ranks, and couples are encouraged to come along too. Whether you have experience or not, The Actors Studio under David’s direction will bring out the actor in you or your interest in helping back stage. As they are mainly known for comedy and drama a singing voice is not required, but since David writes the material, if you can sing or have another talent, it provides him with another character base for his scripts. They meet every Monday at the AFA Alzheimer’s Day Centre, which is at Avenida Stacion 1, Torrevieja, from 7.00pm to 9.00pm and they donate their ticket sales to this worthwhile charity too. Jobs in the vegetable garden: February/March FROM NOW on the days become longer and there will be plenty to do in the vegetable garden. The following are some of the main tasks for the next two months. FEBRUARY Spring clean the greenhouse and garden frame. Turn over the compost heaps made last year. Sieve out what is nice and crumbly for preparing compost for seed trays and pots for large seeded varieties. Sow trays of lettuce, annual herbs, tomatoes, onion, peppers, courgettes, pumpkins and water melon seeds in the greenhouse. Plant onion and leek plantlets for summer harvesting and start to harvest over wintered onions. Spray early peas and broad beans with a Horsetail or Propolis solution to protect against mildew on pods. Plant potatoes if in a frost free location. If not plant in second half of March. Earth up potatoes as the first leaves appear and spray earth with horsetail solution to prevent fungi. If there is still a chance of frost cover the plants with fleece. Overhaul and improve the irrigation system. If not already done dig holes for planting melons, pumpkins and squashes and fill

with well-rotted manure/compost. Mark where the holes are with a cane. Give your comfrey plants a dressing of manure. MARCH Sow last Squash, Pumpkin, Tomato, Pepper and Aubergine seeds in the greenhouse or cold frame. Also plant Pumpkins and Squash directly in the ground under plastic cloches. Plant/sow out beneficial companion plants such as Roses, Borage, Marigolds and Nasturtiums. Start to harvest Asparagus, Peas, Mange Tout, Broad Beans, large Broccoli heads etc. while young and tasty. Plant some last bunches of Onion plantlets for summer harvesting and winter storage. Control weeds as the weather warms up. Put down a number of pieces of heavy black plastic, raised up by two bricks and kept damp underneath, as a good snail trap. Collect the produce twice a week and feed on Rosemary for three weeks before

cooking Asturian style, or squash. Give a liquid comfrey feed to all fruit vegetables currently growing on the plot. Tie in vigorously growing Sweet Peas and tall growing Peas. Give Artichokes a good soaking and feed with a liquid nettle, manure and Comfrey cocktail or a general ecological fertilizer. Keep the Asparagus bed weeded during the

main cropping period. Collect nettles and steep in water for a useful high nitrogen feed. ABUSES BY the Spanish banks have been and continue to be scandalous. With the numerous court decisions that continue to be granted, one could almost believe that it is general practice committed by all Spanish banks, or almost all of them. The banks’ abuses include the sale of preference shares, interest swaps (SWAP / CLIP, etc.), mortgage floor rate clauses, as well as inadequate investments. In today’s article we want to talk briefly about those judgments condemning banks to repay investments made by their customers, due to inadequate advice and insufficient information given to the customer / consumer, by their bank. Most of the court rulings granted in favor of consumers are based on the breach of the bank’s duty to give adequate information to customers and consumers. This information is both vital and essential when considering the purchase of complex financial products

such as structured bonds, derivatives, and products of high technical complexity, these products also tend to carry a high risk. Many of the consulted court orders insist that Spanish Banks are negligent and fail to explain clearly, and prior to the signing of these contracts: the inherent risks, the commissions to be charged ( normally quite high), and how to recover the investment, etc. Therefore, the consent given by the consumer is considered “null”, that is to say, that although the client and consumer signs and voluntarily accepts the purchase of the fund, or the investment, that consent and agreement is flawed because the consumer does not have enough information to really know what they are contracting. It is well known that banks routinely violate their information obligations and the regulations governing advice to be given, and they often ask clients to sign contracts without giving them the time to

read them carefully. There are numerous court judgments against Spanish banks that can be easily found online, we highlight the judgments against Barclays Bank for the Royal Bank of Scotland Bonds, BBVA and Banco Santander, Structured Bonds BNP SAN POP and Caylon Bonds; the court decision against Banco Espiritu Santo (BES) in relation to bonds issued by Lehman Brothers as examples. We must not forget the special care and attention that banks should have when selling these complex products to a retail client, i.e. an individual consumer that is not an expert in complex investments. The Costa Blanca Espana Harley Davidson Biker Group has given the balance of its 2014 fund raising to a self-sufficiency scheme in Relleu aimed at helping children and disabled

youngsters. Members of the group – and their powerful machines – turned up in Calpe where a cheque was handed to Tony Grande, the founder of Make A Smile. Tony said: “The Make A Smile team backed by local volunteers has worked hard over this last eighteen months to create a Self Sufficiency Project in Relleu which helps to

Bilbao to Valencia: 10 delightful days

AN EARLY morning departure on 17th September takes you towards Pamplona (Orcoyen), with stops en route, before checking into a comfortable 4-Star hotel with dinner included. 18th September is spent in Pamplona, exploring the famous Estafeta Street where the bulls are run during the San Fermin festival. Going on to San Sebastian, stop at the beautiful ‘La Concha’ Beach with its two mile stretch of sand and shallow waters – picturesque and always in use, no matter what time of year - arriving at the hotel in Bilbao with time to spare before dinner. Casablanca is Morocco’s largest and most interesting city with its old city of Medina and Hassan II Mosque. There are dozens of fabulous souvenir shops and traditional Eastern ‘souks’ to see before setting off for Gibraltar at 8pm. Gibraltar is reached at 11am on 24th September. Its famous ‘Rock’ and Barbary apes are not the only attraction in this British enclave. Main Street provides a glimpse of Old Blighty with its dozens of shops selling British favourites, open all day so there is plenty of opportunity to shop till you drop before setting sail for the two day voyage to Valencia at 7pm, arriving at 7am on 26th September. Valencia, dominated by the City of Arts and Sciences and spectacular central district crammed with some of Europe’s finest shops and restaurants, is one of Spain’s foremost cultural centres. Your parents have many years of working experience, and they will know how difficult it can be to follow dreams. The solution here is to try and have a fall-back in mind - something you can do while also pursuing ambitions. For example, are you able to set up as a Blogger and do this part time? Would you be able to go to Amateur Dramatics after work to get the acting experience you need for a career in television? All these things are possible but will also need funding. So in the meantime you need to get meaningful employment.

Lots of newly retired people pursue life changing ventures with great success. It is natural that you will have concerns for your parents, but the fact that you and your brother seem more interested in their savings dwindling makes you look very selfish. You have flown the nest and are now standing on your own two feet. Your parents want support from you. Remember they have lives of their own. They have spent many years working hard and doing their best for their children, and now have the opportunity to enjoy their retirement. When a cold becomes a chest infection AT THIS time of year common colds are at a peak and unfortunately some will turn into chest infections, some of which can be serious, or for some life threatening. The main types of chest infection are bronchitis and pneumonia. Most bronchitis cases are caused by viruses, whereas most pneumonia cases are due to bacteria. These types of infections are usually spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes. This propels tiny droplets of fluid containing the virus or bacteria into the air, where they can be breathed in by others. Infections can also be spread to others if you cough or sneeze onto your hand, an object or a surface, and someone else touches it before touching their mouth or nose. Some people are at a higher risk of chest infection including: Babies and very young children Elderly people People who smoke People who are very overweight Pregnant women People with long-term health conditions, such as asthma, heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, cystic fibrosis or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) People with a weakened immune system – this could be due to a recent illness, chemotherapy or a health condition, such as an undiagnosed HIV infection In addition to general symptoms of infection (headache, aches & pains, lethargy etc.) specific symptoms of a chest infection can include: A persistent cough Coughing up blood Wheezing A high temperature (fever) A rapid heartbeat Chest pain or tightness

Feeling confused and disorientated Coughing up yellow or green phlegm (thick mucus), Breathlessness or rapid and shallow breathing

Many chest infections aren’t serious and get better within a few days or weeks and you may not need to see your GP. While you recover at home, you can improve your symptoms by: Getting plenty of rest Drinking lots of fluid to prevent dehydration and to thin the mucus in your lungs, making it easier to cough up Treating headaches, fever and aches and pains with painkillers such as Paracetamol or Ibuprofen Drinking a warm drink of honey and lemon to relieve a sore throat caused by persistent coughing Avoid cough medicines, as there’s little evidence they work, and coughing actually helps you clear the infection more quickly by getting rid of the phlegm from your lungs. You should see your GP if: You think a child under five has a chest infection You are 65 or over You have a long-term health condition You have a persistent fever You feel very unwell or your symptoms are severe You are pregnant Your symptoms last longer than two weeks You feel confused, disorientated or drowsy You have chest pain or difficulty breathing You cough up blood or blood-stained phlegm Your skin or lips develop a blue tinge (cyanosis) You are very overweight and have difficulty breathing You have a weakened immune system Your GP should be able to diagnose you based on your symptoms and clinical examination. Sometimes

further tests such as a chest X-ray, breathing tests and testing phlegm or blood samples may be necessary. VACCINATIONS If you are at an increased risk of chest infections, your GP may recommend being vaccinated against flu and pneumococcal infections. These vaccinations should help reduce your chances of getting chest infections in the future. Most chest infections get better on their own but some can be very serious. If in doubt see your Family Doctor.

Carnival parade on Sunday By Keith Nicol CARNIVAL CELEBRATES its 29th anniversary this year, with the first of two parades taking place this Sunday. The afternoon parade starts at 4pm at María Asunción Square, close to JJ Mullin’s Pub, and follows a route against the typical traffic flow, along Calle Ramón Gallud, past the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre and to the main town square, finishing at Calle Patricio Pérez. At the end of the parade, prizes will be handed over in the Town Square. The afternoon parade features lots of local school children, babes in push chairs and at the other extreme, those evergreen Rascals will also be taking part. The parade normally lasts about two hours and depending on the weather, attracts at least five thousand spectators, who line the streets. The following Saturday evening, which just happens to be St. Valentine’s Night, 14th February, the parade follows the same route, leaving at 10pm from María Asunción Square. The evening parade is slightly more risky, with more adult participation,

more suggestive costumes but lots of fun and great photographic opportunities. Both parades feature three major ‘floats’: the Junior Queen: The Carnival Queen: and the usually the final float,

that of the Drag Queens,; the winners from last month’s contest. Featuring at least 1,000 participants, Carnival is one of the most colourful and fun events that takes place on Torrevieja’s streets and well worth the visit.

Password recovery DEAR AUNTY: My husband has an Acer Aspire - Windows 7. A few months back a friend told him that a password wasn’t necessary to get into his computer so he deleted it. In the meantime, as we were moving house, the computer went into storage. Now, when he tried tries to get into it, a password is required. He has tried his old password and various others but - nothing. Our grandson in England told him to try hitting F8 which didn’t work either. Please help. Lena Aunty says: If you have access to an ‘administrator account’ in windows safe mode then you can change user passwords. Step 1: Start or restart your Windows 7 computer. Step 2: Press F8 to enter Advanced Boot Options before the Windows 7 loading screen appears. Step 3: Choose Safe Mode with Command Prompt in the coming screen, and then press Enter. Step 4: Wait for Windows 7 files to load until Windows login screen comes up. Step 5: Log in Windows with an administrator account until you see login screen. Step 6: A Command Prompt appears. Type net user in the Command Prompt and then hit Enter. All Windows user accounts will be listed for you. Step 7: Type “net user username 12345” and hit Enter. Note: “username” is your locked Windows user

account name. And “12345” means the new password you want to reset for the locked account. User account “username” will be reset with new password “12345”. Step 8: The new password has been successfully reset for user when the command is completed successfully. Step 9: Exit and reboot the PC and Login Windows 7 PC with the new password.

WinPatrol

HI AUNTY: Just a quick tip on stopping Adobe Speed Launcher (and other programs) from starting with Windows. An excellent program called WinPatrol (free edition) is able to display (and give you the option to disable) all programs that start with Windows, screen shot below. It also monitors what is going on and alerts you to programs trying to change settings, home pages etc, giving you the option to allow or reject the change. Jonathan Aunty says: Many thanks for that. It looks like it is simply an ‘easier on the eye’ version of what you can get from Microsoft by type in “msconfig” into you run bar, options to change start up programs. But with the obvious warnings of playing around with your PCs registry can also cause problems.

Keyboard settings AUNTY! MAY I ask you one other question? Why do I have to hit the ‘@’ sign in order to show inverted commas and the same in reverse, when I need to use the ‘@’ sign? This has been going on for some time. It wasn’t always like it. Thanks for all the help....Tom. Aunty says: Sounds like you have your keyboard settings on the PC different to the keyboard layout. For example, if you have a Spanish keyboard and Windows set to UK “input” then some functions will not correspond. You can change these settings in the control panel.

MAGICAL PIANIST Haochen Zhang is set to delight Costa Blanca audiences next month with a triumphant return after his sell out success 12 months ago.

Haochen Zhang gave his debut recital in Shanghai at the age of five and has since been heralded as one of this century’s great pianists and the ‘Chinese Virtuosi’...and a ‘simply amazing’ musician. As long ago as 2009, he became the youngest and first Chinese competitor to win the coveted Nancy Lee and Perry R Bass Gold Medal at the 13th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. He has played with the China National Symphony Orchestra, the Krakow State Philharmonic, the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra – and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. And his impressive CV and his rocket to fame have made him one of the busiest classical musicians in the world and much in demand around the globe. It is a major coup for Concerts Costa Blanca they have once again secured his services in Spain.

JUST SOMETIMES something carries me way back when, and I relive my life as it were yesterday. I guess that I am lucky to have had such an interesting life and that I have the recall to allow my memory to remember. Going back isn’t always in sadness and it certainly isn’t always in joy, but also there are many triggers that help me on the way and every trip along memory lane is for a reason, I guess; as it is often unknown. I must admit to opening a photo album recently and, of course, couldn’t put it down. Such an album was such a jog to my memory and I was lost for some time in reminiscence as I named friends from the past, saw an old car I once owned and saw an apartment where my adopted father once lived. Time stands still and the memory floods with just what was going on then, and it’s infective. Mainly I went back to a time when I wasn’t so decisive or so determined as I am now. That has come with age. I couldn’t help but to wonder though what future I was predicting for myself or where exactly on the pathway of life I was on. What made me laugh? Who was close to me? Who were they who loved me at the time? What was I thinking? To have the recall was such a wonderful thing. Though this connection with the past was an instant kick, I knew it was a brief sojourn on this my journey of life, and I began to think what was coming next and what could be out there in store for me for the future. I have met very sad people who have decided to live in the past. This has to include a very dear friend who still lives in London but who wanted to recreate the wonderful Saturday

nights we enjoyed together as a small group of friends that we were. Though everyone has moved on, the dreadful situation that reunion brings would have brought together five aging, sagging men, not the hybrid leather clad disco bunnies we were. I prefer to remember our craziness and the sheer fun we had, laughing always at everything, even if it wasn’t funny; than to be made to recreate a situation for the sake of it. Often when I hear the music of the past I am that crazy kid on the dance floor though. I was invited to a school reunion, and horror of horrors was beguiled with emails from the names of the past; who wrongly thought that telling me tales of my exploits of getting down and dirty on the rugby field would induce me to jump on a plane and spend an evening together with them. We have all moved on by now, with some of us ( not me!) actually thinking of retirement and all the endless gardening we can muster, when really what we had back then is best staying back there where it truly does belong. The past belongs where it was, and we can have easy access to it but it isn’t for now. Sadly I have met people who really do live in the past with no adjustment for the present we inhabit or the future to aspire them to. Ghosts of the past can haunt me, but I am not that kind of guy. I live for today, and for the wonderful life I live with Spirit by my side. The present is the gift, yesterday the history and tomorrow starts the mystery that is the rest of our lives. When I first came to Spain a patronising neighbour in a cravat and blazer asked me, “What did you do?” I was taken aback by this because I was too busy living my life in the now. I guess you know that I will never retire, ever, not whilst I have work to do and Spirit to see me through. I will take a sneaky peak at that photo album from time to time though.....was that really me?

I remember that I felt very strongly that Gwen was jilted and never found another man to love her. A sad tale but a real one. On the record MEMBERS Of the Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir is off to a recording studio this year to make their first CD. By Jack Troughton PLANS WERE announced at the choir’s recent Annual General Meeting by President Mike Evans – who also reflected on a successful 2014. Demand to hear the choir is growing and 2015 promises a busy summer schedule, starting with the ‘Competition of Choirs’ at the Salon de Actos in Teulada on Sunday 15th February. This year the Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir has selected the Guardian Angels to be its nominated charity. The Angels supports single parent families. And the committee for the coming year was named as: Mike Evans, President; Keith Graves, Secretary and Vice President; Marketing and Publicity Howard Westcott; Social Secretary Ron Davis; and Ralph Eastwood, Librarian. The AGM ended with the inaugural presentation of the ‘Chorister of the Year’ award to Terry Setford for his 100% at rehearsals

Rascals support SAT A PRESENTATION of 120€ was made to S.A.T. animal charity by the performance group The Rascals in January. Rascals spend much of their time raising money and working in the local community for various charities and three Rascals work at the S.A.T. shop. You can see some of the group this weekend as a few members of the group will be having fun taking part in Torrevieja’s afternoon Carnival on Sunday 8th February. The parade starts at about 4.30pm. Another date to put in your diary is either Thursday 23rd or Friday 24th April when they will be performing their next variety show: ‘Both sides of the Pond’ at Los Montesinos. A further performance will take part in Torrevieja in May with the date to be confirmed. Rascals are essentially a group of like minded people who enjoy raising money for local charity, by rehearsing and performing musical variety shows in Los Montesinos, Torrevieja and other local theatres. Rascals were formed in 1993 and during the past dozen years they have raised almost 150,000€ for well deserving charities such as Age Concern, Alzheimer’s and Caritas to name just a few. Apart from performing in shows Rascals members care for each other in good times and bad, They also enjoy working in the local community helping people who need us and enjoy social evenings such as Quiz Nights, Beetle Drives and days out. Choir’s 10th Costa tour By Jack Troughton CHAMBER CHOIR Cantores Sanctis Diebus return to the Costa Blanca for the tenth time this month for three concerts. Based in the historic English city of Salisbury, the choir specialises in music of the Renaissance and will perform at three venues in the north of the region next weekend. The choir and director Nicholas Hale is also pleased to welcome back Charlotte Ashley as soprano soloist for the performances in the Marina Alta. On Valentine’s Day, Saturday 14th February, at 7.30pm at the Alcalali church, the choir performs in collaboration with Music Unlimited and its director Joanna Baldwin. The evening is in two parts, first singing the moving and haunting Requiem by John Rutter, with charlotte as soloist, and in part two, the choirs separately and together will sing a variety of music from the 16th Century to the 20th Century – both sacred and secular. Admission is free but a retiring collection will help support the upkeep of the church. And on Sunday 15th February at 9.45am, Cantores Sanctis Diebus will sing at the Ermita del Popul – on the road between Javea and Jesus Pobre – a Eucharist for the Anglican Chaplaincy.

Jávea Craft Market: better luck this Saturday? DUE TO the rain and wind that lashed the town last Saturday, the weekly craft fair in Jávea had to be cancelled. Let’s hope that this week the weather will be better! A dozen or so craft people are expected to come and sell their hand made goods in wood, ceramics, metal, leather, cloth, wool and resin on Saturday 7th February. Toni will come back to show us how the traditional turrón (soft nougat) is made with ingredients that are as simple as they are natural: almonds, sugar, cinnamon and lemon zest. And Kika with her tiny puppet theatre, who was going to come last Saturday, will tell her Historias de la Abuela Ciruela y la Ardilla Pilla this week for children of all ages. The fair on the Saturday after that coincides with Valentine’s Day - what better present for that special person than something made with skill and loving care by one of these talented crafts people? As Carnival starts that same weekend, one of the artesans will probably spend the whole morning painting children’s faces for the occasion, asking only a small contribution to cover costs. Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

More or e – i rootchanging verbs WE FINISHED off last week’s article on our third category of root-changing verbs, namely “E to I”. This root change only occurs in the “-ir” group of verbs, and as we said, some of the most common ones are: decir (to say, to tell), pedir (to ask for, to order), medir (to measure), seguir (to follow, to continue), repetir (to repeat). We looked at the example PEDIR (or ask for, to request, to order) and that is where we will start off from today, as it is a nice clear one to understand: pido pedimos pides pedís pide piden As you can see, there are certain constants here which apply to all root-changing verbs. The first is, of course, that the endings are the same as for all “-ir” verbs. The second is that the root changes, in this case E to I, occur in the first, second and third persons singular and the third person plural. (pido, pides, pide, piden). The first and second persons plural revert to the same root as the infinitive of the verb (pedimos, pedís). Finally, the beat or emphasis in each case falls on the changed roots where they occur, and on the endings –imos and –ís where the root change doesn’t occur. All of that is identical in principle to all other rootchanging verbs. The part that perhaps makes these E to I verbs appear more confusing is that there is an inverse relationship between what is happening to the root and what is happening to the endings, since the –ir verb endings

involve the letter E except in first and second persons plural where they involve the letter I, giving us “pides” (you order – singular you) “pedís” (you order – plural you). Now, quite a few articles ago I mentioned the fact that there are some verbs in all of these categories and groups, both standard and root-changing, which “do their own thing” in the first person singular. We looked at one or two examples like HACER (to do) HAGO (I do) and SALIR (to go out) SALGO (I go out). Another very familiar example is TENER. This is an E to IE root-changing verb, but the first person singular is TENGO, which of course we all know means “I have”. The point was made quite clearly that just because there is a variation in the first person singular, this does not mean that the verb can be counted as “irregular”, as they follow regular patterns in all other changes. Now, this same “one-off” sort of variation occurs with some or our “I to E” root changing verbs. By far the most common is the verb DECIR (to say, to tell). We hear this used constantly, so it’s one we need to understand properly. This is how it goes: digo decimos dices decís dice dicen As you can see, we are looking at a straightforward E to I root-changing –ir verb, with a variant first person singular. And to be perfectly frank, if you managed to read and understand that last statement without batting an eyelid, take it from me, you’re getting somewhere! See you next week.

Music of the Night a big hit THE ‘MUSIC of the Night’ concerts produced and directed by Nigel Hopkins at the Orihuela Costa Resort at La Zenia last Saturday hit new heights in entertainment on the Costa. The shows featured the Costa’s leading choir, Melody Makers International, along with Cantemos! Youth. Special guests were Karisma, the girls’ harmony group consisting of Janelle Gaskell, Elise MacGregor, Holly Neeson and Gemma Gamble Garcia. The show was opened with the impressive Melody Makers singing Anthem from Chess and Jesus Christ Superstar., followed by a fully staged and costumed performance of a medley from Annie by the talented youngsters of Cantemos! Youth. Karisma showed the more than 1,100 people present what all the fuss had been about, with wonderful harmonies drawing enthusiastic applause. The four adult soloists were excellent with honours going to Alyson Horsfall with a 60-strong chorus in a special arrangement of Climb Every Mountain from Sound of Music, and Eric Berg in a flawless rendition of If I Were A Rich Man. The most enthusiastic applause, however, went to a surprise performance of Music of the Night from Phantom of the Opera given in cloak and mask by professional UK tenor Matthew Hopkins - son of conductor Nigel Hopkins. Matthew, Director of Music at Nottingham Trent University, also led the professional band on the keyboards as well as writing the band parts for the entire performance. The concerts supported two local charities, with Samaritans in Spain raising 600€, whilst Help At Home raised 750€, the extra by virtue of the donations given to them by Nigel Hopkins for the sale of his CD album of popular songs.

The aroma of haggis is fading from our memories BUT - THE Visauto Scottish Texas Scramble was an incredible event.

By Tony Myles WITH KILTS, tartan and Rabbie Burns - beloved by Scottish golfers of all nationalities, every year towards the end of January there are hundreds of English, Welsh, Irish and even Belgium, German, Swedish and Spanish people who suddenly become very Scottish. And the motivation behind this phenomenon is the celebration of the Burns Day Golf competition and Burns Supper at The La Sella Golf Resort and whilst it looks like the Gathering of the Clans, the combatants have forsaken the claymore and caber in favour of the Taylormade driver and Srixon balls. This year was once again exceptional, as the course was festooned with tartan, further enhanced by the kilts and trews worn by the hordes of golfers. There was also the ubiquitous “see-you-Jimmy” wig and many a knobbly knee braving the early morning breeze. The Golf event was launched by Alan Bleasdale, a highland piper in full regalia. The competition was heavily oversubscribed but Campbell’s team did their best to accommodate as many players as possible. Five hours later the competitors made their way to the Marriott ballroom, where to the tune of Scotland the Brave, the haggis was paraded and addressed in true Burns manner by Stevie Paton. Following the dinner Campbell Lamont thanked all the sponsors for their support and regretted that no one was able to claim the new Mercedes Smart car offered by Visauto of Denia for a Hole-in-One. But everyone appreciated the extra balls supplied by Visauto as evidenced by the generous donations that raised over €400 for Grant-A-Wish. Then with toasts with the Macallan whisky and the Vicente Gandia wine that was on every dining table, all the winners were greeted with warm applause, as the scores were worthy of such a great day. STRENGTH TO STRENGTH It is truly phenomenal that the life and times of a poet who died more than two hundred years ago should be feted in such a manner and it is clearly evident that it continues to grow in popularity and affection, as Campbell has already been asked to take reservations for next year. SO WHAT NEXT? There are a number of additional activities that remain in a packed golfing diary. Torrevieja Swimming Club THIS WEEKEND Club Natacion Torrevieja Masters competed in the 2nd Masters Timed Control in the Community of Alicante. The competition brought together 153 masters from 22 clubs across the region at the 50m pool in Elche. Each Master was allowed two individual races plus a relay. Torrevieja’s 6-person team started the day well with Adam Stewart’s 400m Freestyle, a good race by Adam, but not a personal best. Adam went on to race the 1500m freestyle whilst his sister Lucy swam the 50m Breaststroke event. In the 65-69 years category, Paul Matthews was pleased with his 50m Backstroke and 100m Freestyle races, placed first in his category, after suffering neck injuries over the last few months. Rafael Bordes Alonso, unable to compete in the 40m Freestyle, had a good swim in the 50m Breaststroke and then went onto race in the 4 x 50m medley relay. The final two women in the team had excellent swims, Beth Altabas setting new personal bests in her 200m Freestyle and 1500 m Freestyle events. In the 70-74yrs category Beth beat her European Championships times with a swim of 3:27;42 in the 20m and 28;17;75 in the 1500m Freestyle. Colleague Vicki Connolly set a new best in the 50m Breaststroke 46;29 and first place in the 45-49 yrs category , as well as 1st in her 1500m Freestyle with a time of 23:55;63. This stands both team mates in a good position for the first Spanish Long Distance National Championships (3kms) next weekend in Sabadell, Barcelona. In the final event of the day, the 4 x 50m mixed medley relay, the team came 1st in the 200m category. Rafa swimming the first leg, 50m Backstroke, Vicki 50m Breaststroke, Beth 50m Butterfly and Paul the final leg, 50m Freestyle. The team finished with a time of 3:03;46. Registering your vehicle in Spain. Spanish license plates and registration document. Registering a non-Spanish vehicle in Spain is a complex and potentially costly procedure. However, you may be exempt from Spanish registration tax by getting Spanish number plates within one month of entering the country. But to do this, you need to become a resident. STEP 1: OBTAINING A CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMITY This is a statement by the car’s manufacturer that it conforms to EU regulations. You will need the car’s chassis number to complete this straightforward process online at www.eurococ.eu/en/ certificate_of_conformity. The charges for this service will vary according to type of vehicle, make and country of 1st registration. STEP 2: CURRENT LOG BOOK The vehicle’s original log book showing your name as the owner, the vehicles age and a valid UK address. You will also need the bill of sale for the car. STEP 3: RESIDENCY IN SPAIN The Spanish residency certificate (Certificado de Empadronamiento) is your

official proof of residency in Spain. Your local town hall can provide you with this document. You will need to take your passport and proof of Spanish address (rental contract, contract to purchase or property deeds). STEP 4: OBTAINING A SPANISH MOT CERTIFICATE All vehicles over 4 years old must be roadworthy and clearly display a valid ITV sticker. The ITV (Vehicle Technical Inspection) must be tested at an authorised centre, just as for an MOT test. You can find out the location of your nearest ITV centre on DGT website (equivalent to the DVLA). You can also call your local centre to make a booking. If the centre is busy, especially pre-summer, this can save a lot of time. The cost can vary but generally is around 40€ for petrol-engine cars and 56€ for diesel-engine cars. STEP 5: OBTAINING A SPANISH EQUIVALENT OF A TAX DISC The Spanish Tax Agency can provide your vehicle with a valid “tax disc” for Spain, which must be carried in the car when in use. You will need to complete the relevant form online and pay the amount according to your car’s tax band. You can carry out all these procedures
