British Ambassador Simon Manley visited Torrevieja on Wednesday

British Ambassador in Torrevieja by Keith Nicol SIMON MANLEY, the British Ambassador for Spain, visited Torrevieja for the first time on Wednesday. His two-day fact-finding visit to the Alicante region offered him the opportunity to meet with Mayors from the Costa Blanca’s eleven cities with the largest number of British Residents. His visit to Torrevieja included meeting with the Mayors from the largest expatriate community cities, having a brief focus group meeting with representatives from 20 of Torrevieja’s 200 or more associations and groups and finishing with a

visit to the Samaritans Charity Shop and drop in centre in Punta Marina. During his visit the Ambassador was accompanied by the British Consul Sarah-Jane Morrison, the Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, and Vice President of the Generalitat Valenciana, José Ciscar, plus councillors and members of staff from the Alicante Consular office. British Consul Sarah-Jane Morrison noted that although the plan was to meet with just ten mayors, until last year’s reorganising of the Padron and a drop in expatriate numbers in some municipalities, Calpe was also included. The Mayors who met with

the Ambassador were from: Benidorm, Calpe, Javea, Orihuela, Pilar de la Horadada, Rojales, San Fulgencio, Teulada and the town of Murcia Mazarrón and host city, Torrevieja. Torrevieja’s Mayor Eduadro Dolon thanked the British Ambassador and his team for deciding on Torrevieja for the meeting and stressed the importance of this meeting to give local Mayors the opportunity to share experiences and work together to enhance and improve their services to both Britain and other International residents. Of the 103,000 British residents on Municipal Padron in Valencia,

92,000 reside in the Costa Blanca, being the district of Vega Baja with the majority of these living in Torrevieja and Playas de Orihuela. Dolon also indicated it is notable that 40 % of the more than 10 million annual visitors using Alicante airport come from Britain, representing more than four million passengers from the United Kingdom alone. José Ciscar highlighted the fact that more Britons are integrated than ever within the society in which they reside; noting in recent years the increasing numbers in their participation in municipal elections. Parents and supporters of AMPA Colegio Playas de Orihuela protest

by Keith Nicol A CEILING panel that fell on top of a classroom desk last Tuesday has spurred the Parents Association at Colegio Playas de Orihuela into action. For many years and generations of students, parents have been asking for a proper ‘brick and mortar’ school to replace the present array of prefabricated units. The Association of Parents of Students of Colegio Playas de Orihuela (AMPA) on Monday launched the first if what they see as a regular series of protests. More than a hundred people showed their support for changes and they say they are willing to protest every Monday until the end of the academic year to demand that the Department of Education build a ‘real’ school. The protesters say that in the run up to every election that the ruling party makes promises to build a permanent facility but have yet to do so, noted Yolanda Fernandez, President of the group of Parents who are tired of the fact

that their children are taught in one of the 20 temporarily ‘huts’ that make up the facility. Educational facilities on the Orihuela Costa have been a major confrontation zone for many years, as both municipal and region governments seem to have done nothing to build a permanent facility. The situation has gone on for more than 13 years to the point that there are generations of students who have never been taught in proper school because during their school years, Primary School students have moved to the Institute of Playa Flamenca, which is also formed only by Prefabricated huts. The call to action came last Tuesday when one of the roofing boards fell in a classroom of five year old children. Fortunately, none of the children were injured as the metal structure fell on a desk that usually was surrounded by four students, who luckily happened to be in another part of the room, sitting on a carpet, doing other activities.

Residents discuss El Chaperall Park LOCAL RESIDENTS from San Luis, La Siesta and El Chaperall joined together on Thursday to discuss the ambitious park regeneration projects in El Chaperall. Torrevieja’s Mayor, Eduardo Dolon, was accompanied by local Councillors and Jean Paul Murelo, the Direcor of the Foreign Residents Office, to hear comments ans suggests for the new park. The meeting at Casa Ventura was filled to almost capacity as residents studied the plans for the park which is being rejuvenated by the students of Employment Workshop “Mediterranean VIII”, to landscape an area of 40,000 square meters, located in the urbanization El Chaparral. The Park has been a wilderness since almost its inception and the employment workforce are already busy in working on the entrance to the park, removing debris and illegal objects and readying the part for the major landscaping work. The meeting looked closely at the issue of additional facilities that residents might like in the area, to compliment the privately run bowls club and aqua park at the northern end of the development. Under discussion were such items a fitness route, football sala pitch, areas for dogs, petanca courts and seating areas. Along with the finished and impressive park in Los Balcones, El Chaperall is looked upon as being a benchmark model for future development in the entire Vega Baja by the President of the Generalitat, Alberto Fabra.

The traffickers use cheap, shabby vessels that are usually in poor condition but with efficient navigation systems. The 19 boats yielded the seizure of 244,000 kilos of cannabis resin and 424 kilos of cocaine. The value of the drugs on the hashish market alone would be in the region of €381 million.

New protocols for sexual offenders coming into Spain NEW PROTOCOLS have been established following an instruction from the secretary of State for the Guardia Civil and also the National Police when dealing with foreigners arriving in Spain who have been registered on Sexual Offenders Registers in their country of origin. The Interior ministry is calling for stricter controls on such persons entering Spain who have committed crimes of a sexual nature in other countries.

Spain’s bargain basement King KING FELIPE VI is continuing his mission to cut the costs of the Spanish monarchy and improve the royal family’s public image following a series of unfortunate scandals in recent years by accepting a 20% lower salary than that of his predecessor King Juan Carlos. In a statement issued this week the palace has confirmed that the King will receive 234,204€ per year as Head of State compared to King Juan Carlos’ 293,000€. Queen Letizia will receive 128,808€ and the former King, Juan Carlos, will be paid €187,356. The palace budget stays at €7.8 King Felipe million.

Malpractice eye surgeon conceals assets to avoid paying out

by Jan Gamm ADRIÁN PÉREZ, a young man who lost his eye following treatment found to be negligent was awarded with 57,753€, yet has received only 5.54€ in compensation. In the resulting investigations it emerged that the eye specialist involved in the case, José Antonio Outeiriño, who has treated a number of national celebrities, has a string of other malpractice claims against him including one for 100,000€ in 2009 and another for 16,000€ in 2008. After Outeiriño

performed an initial operation on Adrián, he stopped billing the family: it is thought that he was then concerned with trying to repair the damage he had allegedly done. Eventually Adrián lost his eye and must now wear a prosthesis. Outeiriño is suspected of concealing his assets, making it difficult for the authorities to realise compensation for his victims. Outeiriño is registered with the College of Physicians of Madrid and possesses a professional license to practice. Outeiriño’s Madrid Clinic has refused to comment.

Doctors allegedly implicated in baby theft

THREE DOCTORS, now retired, have been accused of stealing a new-born baby from a private Alicante clinic in the eighties. by Jan Gamm DNA Testing by the Toxicology Institute shows that the remains of a new-born child do not correspond to the DNA of the mother who was informed that her baby was dead. The doctors are two gynaecologists and the presiding paediatrician

who all signed the death certificate at the time. It is thought that as many as 300,000 babies were taken from their mothers between 1960 and 1989 by a network of doctors, midwives, priests and nuns who then sold them to infertile couples for a price equivalent to that of a small city apartment.

Barcenas starts a dialogue with the press EX-PP TREASURER Luis Bárcenas has been talking to the Spanish Press about his incarceration in prison and his relationship with PP Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. Barcenas was jailed in June 2013 pending trial for corruption and an alleged involvement in running a multi-million Euro slush fund for the Partido Popular. He was finally released on bail on 21st January. Barcenas says he spent an uncomfortable 18 months in prison, sleeping in Alpine clothing to keep warm in the chilly jail. He said that he “should never have trusted Rajoy,” denying that there had ever been a ‘pact of silence’ between him and the Spanish prime minister. He claims that he has been “manipulated” and also assured the press that he would not make the same mistake again.

Toxic cloud after chemical blast

Three people were injured in an explosion at a chemical plant near Barcelona yesterday (Thursday) morning as a bright orange toxic cloud spread over the area. It is understood the explosion at the Simar factory at Igualada, 60km from Spain’s second city, was caused when two chemicals came into contact was they were delivered. People in six towns were warned to stay indoors as the toxic cloud spread – but this was later partially lifted when emergency services advised children, pregnant women, the elderly and those with breathing problems should still heed the precaution. Nitric acid – which is both toxic and corrosive – and ferric chloride were the chemicals involved. A lack of wind in the area meant the cloud took longer to disperse into the atmosphere.

Four arrested for extortion by Keith Nicol

THREE DISABLED neighbours in Torrevieja have been identified as victims of an extortion scam. On Tuesday Guardia Civil agents arrested four people accused of selling the disabled people fake driving licences for which the victims had to either borrow money, hand over their car or mortgage their house to make payments. The Guardia Civil became aware of extortion of three neighbours on 31st January, 2015, although the events date back to 2011, when the victims were residing in the suburb of Móstoles. The victims were contacted with the offer to acquire two fake driver’s licenses. The cost of each licence was 6,000€ with a down payment of 4,000€ euros to the extortionists. Although they paid for a fake driver’s license, not only did they not receive it they became immersed in an ongoing extortion racquet in which they had to borrow money, mortgage their houses and give their vehicles to the extortionists. The victims are three neighbours from Torrevieja with recognized disabilities who reported the facts to the Guardia Civil who in turn

managed to identify and arrest the four suspects in less than a week. Three of those involved were arrested in Toledo and a fourth in the Community of Madrid. The victims were picked out because of their disabilities and as time passed they realized that not only did they not receive driver’s licenses, but were being extorted directly into handing over money, with their families being threatened with death if they did not pay. The victims were forced to apply for several loans to meet the demands of the four extortionists. They also had to give them their own two vehicles, one of which was wheelchair accessible. As if that were not enough, they were also forced to sign a contract of sale of the family home. Simon Manley remarked that it was important to establish closer working relationships with local municipalities as more and more Britons choose to reside and visit as tourists to the Costa Blanca. During the focus group meeting at Real Club Nautico Torrevieja, he expressed his delight in the number of expatriates who show an interest in the activities and initiatives undertaken by different groups and British associations. He also expressed his desire to help associations promote their activities through the British Consulate and thanked the associations for helping to improve the quality of life of British residents and increasing the amount of integration in Torrevieja society.

No debate over fuel payment THE HOUSES of Parliament bid to halt new regulations preventing British expat pensioners in Spain receiving the Winter Fuel Payment has failed. A rarely used Early Day Motion to stop the Statutory Instrument – known as a ‘prayer’ – did not force Iain Duncan Smith, Secretary of State for the Department of Works and Pensions, to debate the issue. Tory MP Roger Gale, who tabled the motion, said despite the support of 19 other MPs the issue would never be debated in the house unless the Government gave it time as a ‘gift’. “It was always a long shot.” The new regulations are now law but only come into force in September ahead of the winter of 2015/16. Currently the payment is £200 for retired people rising to £300 for those over 80. Spain is one of seven countries to lose the benefit under a controversial temperature test introduced by the DWP. The European Commission, which will investigate whether removing the payment to those in ‘warm’ countries is discriminatory and against EU law, cannot act until the new rules come into force on 21st September. However, British MPs are planning a petition to the European Parliament and a number of MEPs are understood to be raising the legality of the British Government’s move in Brussels.

Mayor visits Torre Almendros THE TORETTA area of Torrevieja is one of the oldest Urbanisations in Torrevieja. by Keith Nicol The area began to see growth in the 1980’s, with the first Urbanisation being La Florida, followed by Urbanización Torre Almendros, with the first phase opening 34 years ago and the second phase in 1993. On Monday morning Torrevieja’s Mayor Eduardo Dolon, Councillors for Parks and Gardens, Carmen Gómez Candel and Foreigners, Youth and Education Rosario Martinez plus the Director of the Foreign Residents Office Jean Paul Mulero, visited the complex and met with present and past presidents, representatives from different nationalities and the administrator, to discuss some of their concerns and to how the municipality might be able to help them. The Urbanisation consists of more than 350 dwellings and 1,500 residents, with 12 nationalities, of which 49% are International. The zone stands out from others in the Torettas because it’s a gated community with security, with good roads and decent access to the area. Residents brought up a small number of major concerns, all of which Eduardo Dolon and Carmen Gómez Candel took note

of, with the intension of putting together a rapid plan of action to improve the outskirts of the area. First on the agenda was the lighting in the local parks, which can easily be improved, to as to cut down on the number of undesirable visitors at night to the area. The Mayor was already aware of the issues that the entire area has with flooding and a plan of action is underway to stop water sitting around the exterior walls of the Urbanisation. There are two areas of waste land which especially in the summer can attract vermin that will soon be trimmed and maintained to solve this problem while the main issue of entry and exit into the community through the main gates is to be looked at, regarding widening the road at the main entrance. At present there are vacant lands opposite the entrance and the land department is undertaking a land search to establish who owns the lands possibly required for road improvements. Although the Town Hall is not responsible for the Urbanisation itself, Eduardo DoMayor lon stated his intension was to help improve Eduardo Dolon meets with the infrastructure of the area as a whole inrepresentatives cluding addressing the concerns of residents from Torre of Torre Almendros. Port of Valencia faces first dock strike in 12 years

STRIKES THAT will put half of the working day on alternate hours began on Thursday in the Port of Valencia causing delays in loading and unloading of cargo and likely diversions for ships. An agreement on stowage that should have been signed on Wednesday failed to happen leading to strikes called for Thursday and Friday of this week pending further arbitration. The Port Authority (VPA) and the Stevedoring Company of Valencia (Sevasa-Sagep) warned of the serious damage that could result from downtime in vital Port traffic and its consequential effect on road transportation for the rest of the country.

Eleven held on drug offences

A MAJOR operation has smashed a local drug cartel with eleven gang members being sentenced this week. The Judge of the Court of Instruction No. 2 of Torrevieja (Alicante), Juana Lopez Hoyos, oversaw proceedings for the eleven. Gang members were arrested by the police in Cartagena and in the provinces of Almería and Granada in an operation against a network of International drug trafficking. Those arrested, including a cartagenero businessman and two other residents of the municipality. According to judicial sources, all suspects are charged with the alleged crimes of drug trafficking and organized gang membership. They were taken to prison in Fontcalent Alicante. Ten of those were arrested during simultaneous raids by Police last Saturday in Cartagena and Olula del Río (Almería); followed by another arrest in Baza (Granada). The agents raided a warehouse where they found a stash of 550 kilos of cocaine that was hidden in bovine hides inside a shipping container in the port. The Special Operations Group (GEO), arrested four citizens from Colombia. The agents also arrested a local businessman, JMS, known for his previous catering business catering and dedicated now to importing marble and chocolate. They also took one of his former employees,who is living in Torrevieja (FJ I, 44). The police operation, coordinated by the Central Unit Drugs and Organized Crime (UDYCO) involved agents from Cartagena and Almeria. They also arrested José Antonio GG, alias ‘El Gari’. He was convicted of the murder of two men from the gypsy clan of ‘The Pertolos’ in March 2009 but later acquitted by the Supreme Court.

Concordia Captain sentenced by Jan Gamm FRANCESCO SCHETTINO, the 54-year-old Captain of the cruise ship Concordia that hit rocks off the island of Gigilo, Italy in 2012 killing 32 of its 4,200 passengers, has been sentenced to 16 years’ imprisonment. Schettino’s lawyers argued that the Captain did not desert his post but accidentally fell into a lifeboat - greeting shivering survi-

vors on shore without even getting his feet wet. He was handed a series of sentences that included 10 years for manslaughter, five for causing a shipwreck, one for abandoning his ship, crew and passengers and an additional month for giving false information to port authorities. However, Schettino has not as yet been locked up: he has an entitlement to two legal appeals which could take years to process.

The Prado introduces a gallery for the blind MADRID’S PRADO Museum has launched an impressive 3-D gallery of classic paintings where the blind can experience and appreciate works by Goya, Da Vinci, Correggio and other masters. The works are reproduced with audio guides and information in Braille. And sighted visitors can also appreciate the exhibits, provided with blackout spectacles in order to experience the feel of works by artists such as Diego Velázquez up close. The layered replica paintings were made using the relief printing technique ‘Didú’, producing volume and texture on the works.

Beware of Valentine’s Day jewellery! THE VALENCIAN Association of Consumers and Users (AVACU) has warned that there are “serious irregularities” present in some jewellery products currently on sale in bazaars and budget stores throughout the country. The association conducted a study on the quality and safety of costume jewellery on sale in the run up to the biggest event of the year for jewellery sales – St Valentine’s Day. Tests revealed an “alarming” content of Cadmium, known to be highly toxic: some items tested showed a Cadmium content of thousands of times over the safety level. Laboratory head Gaspar Lloret said the high Cadmium content of these products is “no joke” warning that the chemicals found in the products he tested were “carcinogenic, toxic and could cause major disruption to the hormonal system.”

Through talks that I give about Torrevieja to various local groups and associations, I have already passed on a few of your questions about scheduled opening times for such things as the Friday Market, the expan-

sion plan timetable for the N332, work on local parks and gardens and the opening of new facilities, such as the Semana Santa Museum and Sports Pavilion, which were slowed down by a lack of funding from Valencia. Thus, if you have questions or concerns for either Eduardo Dolon or Jean Paul, the RTN would be delighted to pass these on and update the response on a weekly basis through the pages of the RTN. Three shells racket

WE COME to Benidorm every year: this year we are here for three months. I thought I thought the problem of the ‘three shells racket’ would have been abolished from the sea front, but as you know they are still here robbing the tourists and locals alike. Today under our balcony they stole a lady’s purse. I don’t know what the police are doing about it, but they do not seem interested in stamping it out. The watchers give an early warning of a police car, plus an unmarked one, and the gang do a quick exit. The situation is causing so much heartbreak. Each gang consists of around ten people, so you can imagine how many people they have to cheat to keep the gang in the style they are used to. I know most of the people caught in the trap are guilty of being a bit greedy and are trying to double their money: will they never learn? There are so many ways to catch these thieves, but as I stated previously the police seem to have lost interest. I would love to receive further information on this subject. Tom Steele

THE RECENT election in Greece saw a socialist government brought to power. The new Leftist government made some outlandish promises considering the country is in such a serious financial crisis. Spain, and more pointedly the Costa Blanca, unfortunately sounds not dissimilar to the mess Greece has caused itself to

be in - they borrow money because they are in a selfinflicted mess, and now refuse to pay what they owe. The best way to deal with such irresponsible behaviour is tell the Leftist government they are not getting any more money until they pay back what they owe. If my irresponsible relative wanted to borrow money from me, I would tell him when he

pays back what he already borrowed, then he can have more. Greece, like Spain, needs to look in a mirror to see where the problem is. They need to admit they are messed up and not blame anyone else. Sadly humans tend to blame everyone but themselves. Robert Murray, Gran Alacant

Colour and Music fill the streets by Keith Nicol ON A chilly but sunny Sunday afternoon, more than 1,500 participants took to Torrevieja’s streets for the first Carnival Parade. Although starting at 5.30pm, an hour later than advertised, thousands of people lined the streets, with hundreds of children and a few adults all dressed in costume, to add to the atmosphere. From babes in arms and push chairs to the evergreen Rascals, dressed as Carnival Clowns, they all added to what is one of Torrevieja’s most colourful fiestas. The Dance School Paya’s with their superb, skin tight, reptile looking outfits, won first prize in the Children’s Costume Category with Antonio and Toni taking the awards for best individual costume and “Most funny” After a very cold and windy morning, the blue skies and sunshine arrived for the start of the parade, which started outside JJ Mullin’s Pub and took a route against the normal run of traffic, along Ramon Gallud to end in front of the Town Hall and main square. Thirty-seven troupes, including five from outside Torrevieja made up the parade, which because of a malfunction for 20-minutes with the Junior Queen float, took almost four hours to pass the entire length of the route. Torrevieja’s Carnival has been declared of Provincial Tourist Interest, and this year surpassed itself in terms of participation and the quality of the costuming from the different troupes. The groups from other cities came from Murcia, Cartagena, Alcantarilla, Santiago de la Ribera and Las Torres de Cotillas. The night Carnival is slightly more risky with more adult themes but great fun. It takes place tomorrow, following the same route, from around 9.30, making it’s way past the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre to the town square. The weather forecast is for a dry night, lower winds and slightly warmer weather, but wrap up warm, and come and join in the fun that is Torrevieja’s Carnival, and be sure to bring your camera to capture the colour and fun of the event.

Habaneras Centre’s new management THE HABANERAS Commercial Centre in Torrevieja has a new management team. by Keith Nicol Harbert Management Corporation (HMC), an American multinational firm has purchased the Habaneras Mall for 65 million from Franco-Dutch company Unibail-Rodamco. The agreement was finalized in December with the new operational management team joining this February. HMC, are based in Alabama, USA and they in turn have delegated international consultancy company CB Richard Ellis (CBRE) to manage the property. The Habaneras Centre is an open air mall with a gross lease area (GLA) of 25,000 m2, 65 stores and an annual influx of around 3.8 million visitors Among its main operators are Inditex, H & M, C & A, Aki, Forum, Ginos and Fosters Hollywood. For Enrique Martínez-Laguna, vice president of CBRE Spain “Having Habaneras incorporated into

our portfolio is an important milestone as we are not only starting working in Spain with Harbert Management Corporation, but is also this is the first centre management contract for CBRE in the Valencian Community. CBRE Retail in Spain has a team of 200 professionals who manage, including Habanera, a portfolio of 24 shopping centres with a total of 1.2 million meters of SBA and an approximate value of 2,500 million euros. By coincidence, investors from the United States seem to have their eyes on Vega Baja supermarkets and commercial centres. This transaction was finalized shortly after it became known that the pension fund of the State of Alaska, the American-Alaska Permanent Fund, has acquired 50% ownership of Zenia Boulevard Commercial Centre, the largest in the province. The two compete directly with each other along with city centre shops.

The new Cardenal Belluga Theatre Group THE NEW Cardenal Belluga Theatre Group held their AGM on 2nd February at the Social Centre on Urbanisation La Marina. The attendance was good and in fact there were returning old members as well as new faces. However, the Group is still seeking new members and there are urgent vacancies for the following: Show Director; Wardrobe Mistress; Publicity Officer; Lighting and Sound Manager and Scenery Manager. Thousands of trees planted

NEARLY THREE thousand sapling pine trees were planted on Saturday in Torrevieja’s recreational area, the Albentosa, to expand to its green forest. The Association of Residents of La Mata, also contributed to “Arbor Day” with a plantation of even more saplings beside the Water Mill Park, where the Mississippi Restaurant is located. A week later than planned due to the previous week’s inclement weather, hundreds of residents and school children took possession of one of the 2,800 pine saplings, dug a hole in a designated located, and planted it, on Saturday. The new reforested area covers about 20,000 square metres for the planting of 2,800 pine trees provided. Those taking part included the Mayor, Eduardo Dolon and members of the municipal council, numerous members of associations and schools, including scout groups with their three badges, Los Trigres, Los Cobras and Scorpions. The chosen plot has a drip irrigation

system to ensure the growth of these new additions to the ‘forest’ as the system has shown in the past that that 95% of pines have grown well in previous years, thanks to irrigation systems. Water company Agamed covered the costs of the restocking program that has already seen locals planting more than 6,000 trees, one for each client that requested their bill for their water service to be sent electronically, resulting in a paperless service and saving on the cutting down of tress to make paper stock. The planting program was further enhanced by the use of a compost that was specifically prepared for the occasion and used for the re-vegetation in Mediterranean climates, through an agreement from Agamed with the University Miguel Hernández, who reformat the compost from sludge taken from the wastewater treatment plant of Torrevieja, and also uses the residues of the city’s tree and plant pruning program.

Natural Park Visitor Centre reopens on Sunday A NEW member of staff who joined this month will allow the Visitors Centre of Torrevieja and La Mata’s Natural Park to reopen this Sunday, February 15th.

by Keith Nicol An environmental guide, along with the rest of the park team will work for the “conservation and environmental education” of the area. This new team member will enhance the service to the public, allowing the Interpretation Centre to be open every day of the week. From September to May the centre will be open from 9:30am to 2:00pm and 9:00am to 1:00pm, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. During June, July and August, the Centre will open from 9:30am to 2:30pm and 9:00am to 1:00pm, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. The Interpretation Centre team are also supported by volunteer members of the ‘Asociación de las Rutas y Caminos de la Sal’ who are directly involved with supporting the development of the area surrounding Torrevie-

ja’s natural lakes. Last year, Torrevieja’s Mayor Eduardo Dolon was made an Honary member of the ‘Asociación de las Rutas y Caminos de la Sal’ and is a regular visitor to the centre and natural parks. In 2014, a total of 42 new information signs, were erected around the park by members of the association. There are two types of signs, such as Park Regulations covering such requirements as keeping dogs on a leash to directional signs and others informing the public of the type of vegetation or bird life they can discover in the area. The Asociación de las Rutas y Caminos de la Sal always have a need and a welcome for new members and anyone interested is invited to attend their regular meeting, which happens on the first Saturday of the Month at the Interpretation Centre in La Mata’s natural park.

Norman Smith passes on ONE OF the ‘Golden Rascals’ sadly passed away last Friday. President Jill Rule said, “It is with great sadness that ‘Rascals’ announces the death of one of their Golden Rascals and great friend Norman Smith. Norman sadly passed away suddenly at his home in La Siesta on Friday. Our thoughts and condolences go to his wife of 52 years, Sylvia and their three sons, Michael, David, Tim and their families. Norman has been back stage with Rascals for the last 14 years. He always had words of kindness and encouragement and of course his fire water that kept us all going.”

Trafico education on Facebook by Keith Nicol THE GUARDIA Civil Trafico Department from Torrevieja have set up their own Facebook page. Not much surprising about that except that this page has been created to expressly educate expatriate drivers in Spain on traffic law, obligations, directives and to give hints and tips to make you a better and safer driver. Set up by a couple of agents from the Torrevieja Branch in their spare time, the information provided covers the southern Alicante region, down to San Pedro and inland to the AP7. The ‘page’ was launched last month and has surpassed 3,000 followers already. The agents involved said: “We would like to say thanks a lot for your support. We decided to create this Facebook page, because we know there are many misinformed drivers they have heard “Chinese whispers” about traffic matters, and we thought it could be a good idea to create a site where all expats could find true traffic information. Therefore, we are publishing articles about all traffic matters.” The informative Facebook page is well worth a browse over the articles published during the past few weeks. To make it interactive, they have added questions about driving law, speed limits, drink driving limits and are working hard with Trafico in Alicante and Madrid to sort out the confusion over the new laws regarding Driving Licences. They are also looking to answer your questions, which should be of an objective and general nature rather than a specific circumstance. Guardia Civil Trafico for the region is

headquartered in Torrevieja, where the majority of their fleet of cars, motorbikes, Q-Cars and Drink and Drug Testing Vans are located. They are fully aware that the interpretation of the law can vary from region to region and note: “We would appreciate knowing where you live, because we have received messages from Almería, Malaga, Javea,... to publish information we have received from the local police of your town. We also would like to know where you are from. We are providing this service in our ‘free-time’, so please be patient if you do not receive an immediate response, as we will do so as soon as possible. Thank you very much. We will keep working to give you a better service.” Even such things as the law for circumnavigating the dreadfully poorly designed Spanish Roundabouts can be found here, along with explanations, plus a look at new traffic laws and initiatives being introduced and tested around Spain, to help make driving safer and hopefully cut down on the high death and accident count in Spain. The faceless profits of self-serve petrol stations in price war LOW COST petrol stations that operate a self-serve automated system and therefore have no use for employees are now in a ‘price war’, offering discounts of up to 15% as they try to claw business from their competitors. Four communities in Navarra, Andalusia, Castilla la Mancha and Aragon have banned such businesses. Unions and consumer groups complain that such organisations are a blight on Spain’s efforts toward re-employment and job security.

SPECSAVERS OPTICAS is to launch a national campaign on 16th February to collect unwanted glasses for Lions Clubs International. by Patricia Thompson The glasses will be presented to the Lions Clubs at the beginning of May, starting their ‘Recycle for Sight Month’ off in the best possible way. There are five Specsavers Opticas stores on the Costa Blanca: Calpe, Javea, Benidorm, Guardamar del Segura and Torrevieja, and they are calling on their local communities to get involved so that they can collect as many glasses as possible to beat their 2013 campaign which collected 4,436 pairs. Specsavers Opticas and Lions Clubs International are committed to helping the world to see, and this collection will change lives in areas where people desperately need access to glasses. Specsavers are asking community groups, schools and clubs to help them by having a collection and bringing them into their nearest store so glasses don’t go to waste. After the glasses are donated in store they are sent to the Lions Club’s recycling plant in Alicante where they are first separated into single vision, bifocals, varifocals and sunglasses. They are then graded according to prescription strength, cleaned and boxed for distribution.

February weather: good and bad points WELL THE past fortnight was rather wet - the longest spell of wet days for a long time. It certainly put a stop to continuing with a winter cut back and clean up but on the positive side, the rain kept temperatures up a few degrees, gave soils a good soaking and stimulated bulbs to sprout and even flower out of season. Going through Denia on the Costa Blanca the other day, a large clump of blue Agapanthus in the centre of a roundabout was in flower. Fortunately, the rain was generally light so did little to mar the reliable yellow displays of Euryops and winter Acacias, nor the Strelitzias or Callistemons (bottle brushes) in our inland garden, or early flowering English varieties of Magnolias in coastal gardens. When needing to harvest salad leaves during the wet weather, the conveniently-sited winter veggie plot comprising twenty black builders’ buckets just a few yards from the front door of the house has been a godsend. Just 15 metres into the garden Broccoli, Carrots, Italian Fennel, Swiss Chard, Cabbages and Cauliflowers are doing well in larger raised beds. Naturally all are being grown naturally and ecologically, loaded with beneficial vitamins and minerals and in some cases fibres. For instance Broccoli and Parsley are sources

of vitamins A,C and K - Rocket for the same plus Potassium; Leeks for vitamins A,C ,E and K plus Potassium, Iron, Calcium and Manganese; Peppers for vitamins B and C plus Iron, Potassium, Manganese, Magnesium and Selenium etc.. WHEN ONE owns a flat or premises forming part of a community of neighbors or owners ( complex or urbanization), his right to enjoy his property is not unlimited, as the rights of the community of owners where he lives must be respected, its rules, common elements, etc., regarding the activities performed on the property, and possible renovations, services, etc. Thus, the Law 49/1960, of 21 July, Horizontal Property Law (LPH), in its article 7.1 regarding works, services, etc., says: “The owner of an individual property or premises is able to alter the architectural elements, facilities or services of it, as far as they do not affect or alter the building’s security, its general structure, its exterior configuration or condition, or prejudice the rights of other owners, and must report such works in advance to the person who represents the community. “ Also, a landlord cannot develop on a house or premises, any activity that is prohibited by the

statutes, resulting in harm to the community or any other neighbor, or contravene the general provisions about annoying, unhealthy, noxious, dangerous or illegal activities. Article 7.2 of the mentioned LPH, says that if any of these prohibited activities is performed, the president of the community, must in first place request to the owner or occupier of the property to cease the activity immediately. In the event that they continue with the activity, a legal action for cessation or termination could be filed. The court could agree the final cessation and termination of the prohibited activity and order compensation for damages if appropriate, and also, it can agree the deprivation of the right to use of the property or premises for a maximum period of three years, depending on the gravity of the infringement and the damage caused to the community. A judgment of the Court of First Instance No. 4 of Alicante, number 247/2014 dated 12.15.2014, has drawn our attention since it ruled against the

owners and tenants of a property that was part of a community owners, where prostitution and sexual massages activities took place, with subsequent disruption of the peace for the rest of neighbors, due continuous calls to the intercoms, coming and going of people late in the nigh, etc. The judgment firstly understood that according to the statutes of the community it was not allowed to perform any kind of commercial or professional activity in the flats, as any business activity was reserved exclusively for commercial premises, and secondly, the court understood that the activity in question caused an obvious nuisance to neighbors. So the judge ordered the termination of the activity in question, (extinguishing the lease / letting contract), and further the judge to deprive the owner the use of the property for 3 years. The danger of Alternative investments THIS WEEK yet another so called Alternative investment fund collapsed, these investment funds are un-regulated and are meant to give you a guaranteed return whilst being uncorrelated to the stock market. AN ALTERNATIVE investment that promised money for solar panels and 6.5 per cent annual returns – and claimed to be “protected, stable and socially responsible” – looks to have gone bust, potentially leaving thousands of UK investors out of pocket.

Secured Energy Bonds rode a wave of green investment popularity in 2013: their launch was oversubscribed and they attracted more than £7.5m of UK investors’ money. But the Australian company behind the bonds went into administration in November and this week Capita, the registrar, told investors that the bonds had been suspended and it had ceased providing services to the company. Significantly, these would be the first retail bonds to fail to meet their obligations – sending out a warning of the dangers of putting cash into nonregulated investments According to the Independent, a range of companies have turned to retail bonds to raise cash, attracting investors with interest promises

of 6 % or more. The likes of Severn Trent, Tesco and the Jockey Club had successful launches but their popularity led the City watchdog to warn that the bonds should only be sold to sophisticated investors due to the high risk, illiquidity and inflexibility. Walking coast to coast DICK HANDSCOMBE remembers an epic 52-day trek across the Spanish Pyrenees in his latest book on a journey from the Bay of Biscay to the Mediterranean. by Jack Troughton WALKING ON the Spanish side of the mountain border with France, the 950km walk in 1988 came five years after he took early retirement following two cancer operations and a surgeon’s suggestion he take up the Mediterranean lifestyle as an alternative to chemo and radio therapy. ‘Our 52 day retirement adventure along the Spanish Pyrenees’ tells of the “lifetime odyssey” with walking partner Clodagh and the start of an active and healthy retirement. Dick and Clodagh later married and became two of the Costa Blanca’s leading experts on gardening and published a series of books together. Sadly, they have since parted. And Dick, who still writes a gardening column for RTN, described the Pyrenean walk as a “natural alternative to the busy Santiago de Campostella walk”. DIARY The book is a day by day diary of the walk from the wet rocky headland of Cap Higeur to the soft sand of the warm Mediterranean that he writes was “arduous but scenically beautiful thrilling and romantic walking”. The couple trekked seven days between rest days and alternated between nights of camping and comfortable mountain village beds and wholesome Pyrenean food and wine. Dick also pays tribute to the friendly Spanish mountain ’folk’, tells of forced changes to the route because of late snows on the mountains, and Mother nature’s part in the plot – the “amazing array” of birds, butterflies and flowers, as well as “majestic” wild horse and bulls. Still living the good life near the mountain village of Barx, Dick’s dedication at the start of the book reads: “To the friendly Pyrenean people who kindly helped us on our way for 52 days of my life.” “Our 52 day retirement adventure along the Spanish Pyrenees” is available from Amazon and as a Kindle edition.

However, there could well be common ground no matter what age you are when it comes to the music of Bob Marley. When he was just 12 years old he moved with his family to Trenchtown in Jamaica, and for the next 24 years before he died in 1981 he dedicated his life to bringing to the world a gloriously rhythmic reggae sound, with words that reflected his anti-materialistic Rastafarian beliefs, and I fancy most of you have enjoyed listening to his music at some point in your life. To mark the 70th anniversary of Bob Marley´s birth a free concert was organised last weekend on the Kingston waterfront with many local reggae artists performing live, including one of Marley’s sons, Ky-Mani. But it’s not just party time, certainly as far as fashion designer Marcia Facey from the town in concerned. It seems that Jamaica has debated for years about adding Marley to its Order of National Hero, its highest honour, and on this subject Marcia said “I was not around when Bob was alive ... but people are still excited about his music.” This sentiment was reinforced by mechanic Errol Campbell also of Kingston who said “Bob was a reggae genius who has done more for Jamaica than most others by popularizing our music, and it’s high time that the government made him our eighth national hero!” The background to this sorry issue is allegedly that some government committee members are opposed to Marley being given this honour because he smoked marijuana and sometimes disrespected authority as part of his Rastafarian faith. Let’s hope the event in Kingston changes their rather antiquated beliefs eh!

By Jack Troughton SPANISH NOBILITY arriving in Venice is met with a very damp reception in Gilbert and Sullivan’s ever popular operetta ‘Gondoliers’. The Duke of Plaza Toro (yes, the Duke of the Bull Ring) and his entourage are hoping his daughter Casilda can claim the hand of the King of Barataria – she was betrothed to the royal as a child. Unfortunately, it is unclear which of two gondoliers is ‘His Majesty’ and the story is further complicated as both have just married their sweethearts. Calpe Gilbert and Sullivan Society is

bringing this twisted tale to the Costa Blanca stage next month in concert form, returning to the formula used several years ago for ‘Trial by Jury’ with performances in Moraira and Calpe. Both concerts will contain the wonderful music of the operetta, including such songs as ‘Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes’ and ‘Dance a Cahcucha’, with narrative from the cast helping the story towards its traditional happy ending. And the shows will be accompanied with live music with Kirsty Glen on piano and Paul Kears on cello, under the watchful eye of Musical Director Aileen Lightfoot.

The Calpe-based group is hoping someone local will donate an old ‘honky tonk’ for the show – and bag a pair of tickets to see the show in exchange. Stepping out is a hilarious comedy about a tap dancing class set in a ‘typical’ village hall but the gift of a piano will only be accepted on the understanding the Footlights’ stage crew sill remove the metal strings frame and other heavy parts to make it suitable to shift around the stage during performances. My trackpad is oversensitive HI AUNTY: Firstly Happy New Year, and thanks for all your help in the past. I am getting very frustrated with my Sony VA10 Model vpceb 1zoe: I am using Windows 7. The problem is with the touch pad which is over sensitive. Visits to the web over the last few months show this is a problem with other users. And typing this note to you has needed two corrections where the cursor has moved into the middle of the note. I have tried to find alternative drivers as the ones installed give no facility for adjusting the sensitivity. Visits to the Sony site eventually advise the model is not recognised. And the Synaptics route has identified the ones in use as v13.2.6.1.20 jul 09: Keith Aunty says: It appears that most touchpad issues can be solved by shutting down the laptop, removing the batter, pressing and holding the start button for 10 seconds, replacing the battery and starting the lap top. Also, in the control panel, you

should have options to change all sorts of touchpad settings, including sensitivity. Failing that, you can always try downloading the Driver pack from synaptics, who make the touchpad: http://www.synaptics.com/en/ drivers.php And as a last resort, you can always use a USB mouse.

Scanning a documents as a text document HI AUNTY: Is there a way I can change the scanning to be a text Doc instead of an image? I feel sure in my previous Epson printer it always went into my docs as a text Doc. Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Ray. Aunty says: Most documents are scanned and saved as a graphical image. If you want to scan a document containing text and to save it as a text document, you must use Optical character recognition (OCR) software. OCR will scan your document, and try and convert the text it sees and save it into a text document. If you have Microsoft Office, then you should have their “Microsoft Office Document Imaging” in the MS Office tools folder. Otherwise, you will need to find some OCR software - Google free OCR software download.

Ask as default homepage HI AUNTY: Saw the page in a recent edition and read the story about Ask taking over a home page. I’m happy to say that I know how that happened as it just happened to me. I have Java updates set to download automatically and ask before installing (probably default). There was a Java update this morning which worked fine but on completion, I noticed that the notification said that the Ask add-ons would install shortly. Following the verify check I got the Ask install. I’m quite savvy about all this and thought I had denied the installation, but it completed anyway. I’ve removed Ask and all is fine, but I thought you might like to be aware of how this happened. Just goes to show if you do install programs, it may pay to do a “custom” install and not the default install, as you never know what the default install actually installs!

The event is organised by CBBlues.com, the Costa Blanca blues ‘webzine’, and its owner Karla Daracos – aimed at keeping the blue alive in the region by putting musicians and fans together. Alberto Mondejar – aka ‘Nano Blues’ – is a veteran guitarist and one of the directors of the Valencia Blues society. Aged 59, he has been in the music business for 45 years. And keeping the beat alive is drummer Oscar Alcarez Lopez, a graduate of the Conservatory of Music

in Valencia. Another experienced musician with over 40 years experience, he is proficient in a number of styles from classical to jazz, blues, rock and pop – and is a respected teacher. Odd first person singular forms WE HAVE now covered the bare bones of all standard and rootchanging verbs. However, we need to go back a little bit to pick up a few bits and pieces before we move on to our four irregular verbs. WE ARE going to return to the matter of “first person singular” variations, several of which have been mentioned already in previous articles. The principle is this – amongst the wide range of standard and root-changing verbs in the present tense, across the spectrum of –ar, -er and –ir groups, there is a smattering of verbs which have one form that doesn’t follow the regular pattern. This only ever applies to the first person singular “I” forms, and it does not affect anything else about the verb at all. All the other forms of these verbs are entirely regular according to which group or pattern they fall into. Why (we might ask) do these changes occur? Well, I am not an expert in the history of language, but the reason clearly lies in the way speech develops over a period of many years. Sometimes certain sounds are easier to say than others, and through constant repetition and usage, odd forms find their way into a language and eventually become accepted as correct. We mentioned a familiar example in our last article – “tengo” meaning “I have”. If the verb, in this case “tener”, followed the

complete pattern of a E to IE root changing verb then instead of “tengo” we would be saying “tieno”. However, in my simple way I suspect that over a period of many years, and given just how frequently people use this word, “tieno” turned into something that is easier to say, namely “tengo”. If you’re prepared to accept this as an explanation that’s great, if not, the only other one I have to offer you is “That’s how it is, so tough!” The letter “g” is often involved in these changes, and here is a list of the most frequent examples of this. Answer: I have no idea, but if someone would like to find out and let me know I’d be delighted! This form is a good illustration of the best way to learn these things though, and that is by constant use. Most people learn early on in their Spanish to say “no sé” (I don’t know), without ever realising that they are using an odd form at all! Finally on this subject, there is a particular change that occurs in the first person singular to verbs that end in “cer” or “cir” in the infinitive. Here is an example – conocer (to know, to be familiar with). “I know” (I am familiar with) is “conozco” (pronounced conothko). Here are some more examples – parezco (I seem) conduzco (I drive) reduzco (I reduce). There are quite few more – something for you to look out for!

Happy Hippy? THE MANY changes Planet Earth is experiencing right now are as a result of many relevant factors. We are responsible for polluting the planet, but we cannot be found to be totally guilty of global warming as a whole. Indeed too, the Internet is buzzing with so much information regarding the many changes, together with conjecture as to how things will be implemented, and what will happen, and when? Maybe it is time indeed to make some changes, but we do like to know what is coming, and there are many theories which have mostly brought about fear and negativity. It is the not knowing that fuels the flame of doubt, together with the rise of conjecture which only ever offers cold comfort and an intensity of doubt and fear. Whilst there are some people who will always want the truth, because they can cope well with it, there comes along people who would rather not know, because they cope better by not knowing exactly what is going on. The Shift that is referred to, and which would appear to be earmarked for this year, is a spiritual re birth of sorts. Many people across World religions are feeling that there is a need to thrive on the theory there is a new beginning on the way. This, mainly because it brings change, will also serve to bring fear alongside, as they seem to operate so very well together; and what scares some of us silly, inspires and excites others. It is our personal perception that activates a reaction, and the Shift is going to be a reaction that will terrify or inspire, whichever way you look at it. The News does not help. The rise of ISIS does nothing but bring anger and resentment and pain. We are generally, naturally, very aroused by suffering, and yet this is purely shocking terrorism brought to our doors, as it is, indeed, poised to become the warfare of both now and an agonising blueprint of disruption for the future.

Every time I am asked to remove my shoes at an airline security check I am reminded that a would be terrorist once tried to sneak a bomb on board snuggled in his oversized Nike’s. Though I may be irritated I am not alone in wanting to fly safe because it has positive consequences for our safety, of course. After all, I only have to undo a shoelace or two. Terrorism is shaping the way we do things, however. Setting worrying trends for the future, and governed by fear, it sets out to achieve the ideals of the fundamentalists by sending out an extreme message to society we may very well choose not to hear, and which, somehow, we have to act upon. I am sure that aspects have already arisen that we sincerely wish we were not informed of, but all knowledge, however revealed is power, after all. Bringing swingeing changes as it is predicted to do, the Shift is anticipated to be the salvation of the negativities beheld on the Planet. Maybe for good reason it may just be something that many feel will become the antidote of all the bad which is currently going on. If it is to resolve and instruct it will be a joy to receive. Many of us are feeling closer to the process of Ascension as the World goes very wrong. The Shift may hasten anything that can improve the chaos, and bring a new conscious energy to the suffering World before it is too late. If it helps many to begin to think of the Ascension process then it will indeed be a wonderful thing. The World needs to know that real power is so wonderful, and it can work magic in the right hands.Unfortunately so many have the image that those who abuse power are the truly powerful ones. This means that for many power is to be seen as negative thing, when it should be a strength to unite the World and seal peace into the bargain. Spiritual power is given to so many these days, and if they use it for the mutual benefit of others then it is used wisely and will fit to purpose. Always. I hope sincerely that any Shift makes a difference to help to heal that that is going wrong on every continent. Call me a happy hippy if you like, but peace should be ruling this planet; not the fear brought about by the dangerous greed and stealth of those who truly do have blood on their hands, and nothing but hatred in their hearts.

Los Amigos Golf Society (LAGS) February Competition

AT THE WINTER Las Salinas Petanca League mixed doubles competition on 8th February for the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th divisions 24 teams turned up to play.

ON A very windy morning, 40 Los Amigos Golf Society (LAGS) members and guests played their February competition at the scenic and beautifully presented Aguilon Golf Course, setting off from the 1st and 10th tees. The competition was a Texas Scramble and 10 teams battled for the coveted winner’s prize. In tough conditions and with a commendable net score of 62, the winners were Mick Drummond, Roy Braddow, Don Mallett and Jeff Brain. There were two nearest the pin winners: Willie Crosby on the 8th and Gordon Neilson on the 12th. Two other notable achievements were the longest drive of 278 yards into the teeth of a gale by Keith ‘animal’ Collins and the society also witnesses a monumental ‘chip in’ by the very deft.....or is it daft.....Terry Adams. Depending upon whose version of events you hear, the chip in was from anywhere between the fringe of the green to over 120 yards down the fairway! Either way, a great shot Terry. THE SOCIETY’S first February game was on a lovely sunny day and no wind - the only day of the week without wind. A great turn out again with three Divisions - in the top one Bob Gallard came in first and returned the best score of the day with 41pts - that’s what new clubs can do! Well played Bob! In second place was Barry Beale with 37pts. In Division Two Harry O’Neil came in with a good 35pts - Bob Eaton in second on 30pts. Division Three’s winner was John Hillier with a score of 35pts just edging out Christine Flanagan on 34pts. The course was also in great shape. With only one more round to play the player of the year award is wide open with only one point between the top three players Frank Murphy and Dave Archer both on 206pts with Barry Beale on 205pts. Best of luck to all three players in the last round. The next Society’s game will be on Wednesday, 18th February 2015 at La Serena. 1st Tee time - 10am. The format is Team Joker (double points - Stableford). Payday will be on Saturday, 14th February at La Serena, in the bar area, between 11am and 12 noon.

THERE WERE no rugby games past weekend for our first team - Spain was playing Russia at Madrid. A convincing win for Spain 43-21: former player for La Vila, Marcos Poggi, scored one try. La Vila’s women’s team lost their game against Valencia Tecnidex, played at Valencia: score 78-7. Our ladies keep training very hard for better results next time. Next Saturday the first team will travel to Barcelona, playing at 4pm against San Cugat - a crucial game. The winner will have a sure spot for play off to play the Spanish top-12 next season. Good luck for La Vila. No games at home - the second team will play on Sunday away in Aspe (Alicante). Under 18s will play away on Saturday at 11.30am in Valencia against Tatami Valencia. The next home game for the first team will be Sunday 22nd February at 12.30pm against Barcelona Buc. Book the date - we need your support. We have already made preparations for the next 29th International Benidorm 7s: 23rd - 24th May: book the dates. Very good selections including Chile, Uruguay, Spain, Venezuela, Maroc, South African Sevens. Tigers from Australia, European, New Zealanders… don’t miss out. Join the club as a player or supporter, we need all the help we can get - come down and watch La Vila’s next game! Volkswagen Golf SV WHEN I was told I would be testing the Volkswagen Golf SV, I imagined it was the standard hatchback model. That is not the case though. THE SV is a larger than life hatchback, more like the C-Max is to the Ford Focus. It’s larger and higher up in all the right places although it does look a little more van-like than its smaller hatchback relative. Outside the UK it is actually named ‘Sportsvan’ and is in fact the direct replacement for the Golf Plus. VW sold over 900,000 of these and in Germany the Plus accounted for 20 per cent of all Golf registrations. A trip to Kent puts it through its paces. To start, it has to contend with all the usual Saunders paraphernalia that includes everything except the kitchen sink. If we did not have a need for a pushchair probably all of the luggage would fit in the large boot. I am always impressed with the high quality of finish on every VW I have driven and this model is no different. The seats are comfortable and supportive, finished in a hardwearing fabric. I like the fact that the rear seats can be pulled forward by 180mm giving a larger boot space if required as you can see in the video at travelwriter.biz. That extends the load area from 500 litres to a 590 litres while folding the 40/20/40 split rear bench increases space to 1,520 litres, allowing me to transport a washing machine to the tip and collect a load of logs. At times the SV does feel a little too large for comfort when driving, notably when trying to reverse park. Arguably it would benefit from parking sensors and a video camera.

I try to parallel-park on the outskirts of Faversham and my attempt would be a fail on a driving test and the parked driver behind me leaves in disgust. It would also be advantageous if this model was fitted with satellite navigation. Overall the driving experience though is good, it travels at speed on the motorway with ease although there is a little noise but then there are high winds. The 1.6 turbo diesel unit prefers not to travel at slower speeds especially in second or third gear. It really does need a boot to deliver good performance. In common with most diesels it does need a bit of welly to get going but this is all part of the diesel experience and the frugal amongst us will not mind when we see that despite travelling at 70mph it still returns over 50mpg. In these days of six and seven speed manual gearboxes some might expect something a bit grander than the five speed unit but it is typical VW, smooth and reliable. Being higher up than a standard hatchback provides the driver with a better view of the road ahead and allows me to overtake a slow moving vehicle where I would otherwise be unable to in a lower car. “Longer, wider, taller and more spacious than the hatchback it’s based on, the new Volkswagen Golf SV is the perfect antidote for growing families no longer able to squeeze into the firm’s regular hatchback,” writes Parkers, the

car experts. “The boot’s almost as big as the Estate model and there’s extra passenger room all round thanks to a wheelbase 48mm longer than the hatch it’s based on.
