THE MOOD is still upbeat in RTN towers this week after the team enjoyed meeting and chatting with such a colourful cross-section of our readers at the Homes Gardens and Lifestyle Show last weekend. It’s good to know we are getting things right at the paper; it seems you guys enjoy picking up a copy every Friday…and all our efforts are not instant chip paper! With Easter looming, please note we are publishing a day early next week - so for one week only, grab a copy on Maundy Thursday. And it was also a blast to have a chat with one of the special guests at the show, comedian Syd Little. A genuinely nice guy and funnier than his straight man reputation, we were pleased to offer him a seat to watch his beloved Manchester City on the RTN television. Sorry we couldn’t fix a win and he had to settle for a 0-0 draw. Later in the week we were able to present lucky reader Mary-Claire Weber with the top prize of an eight-day cruise and all the crew wish her a happy time afloat. Better luck next time to everyone else! Back to the EU Referendum front. The battle has now gone to the High Court in London in a bid to get all expats a voice in the crucial ballot. Democracy is calling Mr Cameron.

by IAN ASKEW RESIDENTS of Bolnuevo rushed to the beach on Wednesday to see a baby pilot whale, more than two metres long, which appeared dead on the shore. A German resident contacted the 112 emergency number, at about 11am, to notify them that a whale had washed up on the beach. Two Guardia Civil patrols from Mazarrón attended, and guarded the body until wildlife experts arrived. The director of the Association of Southeast Spain’s Naturalists (ANSE), Pedro García, explained the mammal appeared to have died several days earlier. He went on to explain that “the pilot whale is the largest of the dolphins, and is commonly found in coastal waters of the Region of Murcia.” By late afternoon, the experts had removed the whale’s body, which will now be examined to determine the cause of death.

Maroc makeover BY JACK TROUGHTON THE COURAGEOUS girls of Team Fab Four are ready for the thrills and spills of the gruelling Maroc Challenge, and even their powerful 4x4 has enjoyed a makeover. The team leaves the Costa Blanca tomorrow (Saturday) to take on the heat of the Sahara Desert and the rented car has been given a new look – it now sports a fetching pair of false eyelashes over the headlights. And while the Nicola Franklyn, Julie Voce, Sally Moore and Pat McCue, are looking forward to a great adventure, there is a serious side to the trip and they hope to raise a small fortune for charity. Team Fab Four is also unique to the history of the Maroc Challenge. The girls are believed to be the first four-strong ladies team to take part. Nicola, Julie, Sally, and Pat, have had two days of theory and practical training in car mechanics and the long wheelbase white 1992 Nissan Patrol 2.8 turbo diesel has been thoroughly checked. Each of the team has paid for themselves and will split the money raised between two charities; Make A Smile, which supports children cared for in EMAUS homes, and Javea-based animal charity APASA. The race itself starts in Nador in Morocco and the seven-day route crosses the Atlas Mountains, into the Sahara Desert and back. There are around 130 entries from across Europe but Team Fab Four is just one of a handful of ladies´ teams and are planning to return with the women’s trophy. DRIVE Each of the team has been given lessons in driving a 4x4 – none had been behind the wheel of one before. One of Team Fab Four has only driven an automatic for the last 20 years. But confidence is running high. RTN was told: “We have all had our nails done; we have Murray Mints for the journey and gin for the overnight stops and we have loads of goodies to give away to kids along the way.” Enjoying a few drinks was how the girls initially got involved in the rally. “It was over a few gins when we first said ´let’s do it´.” Julie added: “And what started as a joke suddenly turned into something much more concrete and here we are off on the Maroc Challenge.” The car is rented from Javea Auto Sales – one of the rally officials - and the company also provided a theory and a practical lesson in basic mechanics. Nicola said: “We do have our own mechanic but unfortunately, he is going along in another car!” HOTEL The girls will stay in hotels during the rally – many competitors chose to camp out – and because they are ´car sharing´, the adventure will cost them in the region of 1,250€ each. And as one-off, they think it is very affordable. Pat said: “I hope more people will want to do it.” Andy from Javea Auto Sales said he was confident Team Fab Four would cross the finish line. “Everyone mucks in together on the race and if anyone really gets stuck, there is always someone ready to help out. “There is a separate trophy for women’s team but in truth there are only three or four in each rally. The girls are pretty unique, I am fairly sure they are the only four-strong ladies team that has ever gone on the Maroc Challenge.” Donations can be made to support the team at Heaven Boutique, Quicksave, and Salamandra in Javea, and Mullins Bar, Javea. Delighted winner Mary-Claire recieves her prize from Gandia Tours

by JACK TROUGHTON LUCKY MARY-CLAIRE Weber is “absolutely over the moon” after winning an eight-day Mediterranean Cruise for two courtesy of RTN and Gandia Tours. The Javea pensioner and a neighbour visited the Homes, Gardens and Lifestyle Show 2016 at the Denia Marriott Hotel and Spa on Saturday morning – and was looking forward to life on the ocean waves later the same evening. “I never win anything,” said Mary-Claire. “When they rang up on Saturday to say I had won I simply couldn’t believe it; I thought it was a wrong number. I still can’t believe it.” Mary-Claire is originally from Dublin – she was busy nurturing some shamrocks for St Patrick’s Day – when RTN’s photographer called but moved to Javea in 1965 with her parents. And she said she had not had the best of times really but 2016 was going to be different; her son and his wife in Valencia were expecting twins and she was going on a cruise. “It is a real tonic.” Mary-Claire, who will sail with a best friend, admitted she had enjoyed a cruise before. “My other son is an English teacher in China and we once went on a cruise along the Yangtze River, we were the only foreigners – I visit China every year.” She also keeps herself busy teaching English, and likes gardening, shopping and going out with her many friends.

Hospital plans brought forward by Ian Askew

THE REGIONAL Health Authority had promised to equip Cartagenaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Santa Maria del Rosell Hospital with more services and 55 more beds by the end of this year, or by the end of the first quarter of 2017, but, according to medical sources earlier this week, these facilities will now be made available after the summer. By the end of the summer, Rosell will also have the 16 beds for inpatient surgery (CCI) and 14 for ambulatory surgery (CMA), which were launched on 1st March, together with another 14 in a new short stay observation unit (UCE), for the monitoring of patients admitted to hospital for less than 72 hours, which will help optimize hospital resources. In addition there will be three post-surgical rooms, and eight rooms in the new Palliative Care Unit (PCU) for the comfort and privacy of patientsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; relatives. At that time, training is due to begin for the Home Care health teams, for the service, scheduled to come into operation next year, to allow patients to recover from surgical procedures in their own homes, rather than needing protracted stays as hospital in-patients.

Pop goes ﬂat by JACK TROUGHTON BRITAIN WILL become one of the first countries in the world to introduce a ‘sugar tax’ on soft drinks, Chancellor George Osborne announced in Wednesday’s Budget 2016. He said he was acting to help halt the obesity crisis in children and the cash raised by the controversial measure would fund sport in primary schools. Mr Osborne announced a raft of measures designed to help UK finances, but the raid on the soft drinks industry was a shock. And speaking in the House of Commons, he said his Budget was “one that takes bold decisions so that our children can grow up fit and healthy.” The sugar tax, which will come into force in two years, will raise £520 million in its first year – money to be invested in school sports programmes – and will increase the price of a can of Coca-Cola by some 8p, or a litre of the fizzy drink by 24p. The Government believes companies will begin to reduce sugar levels in soft drinks to avoid the tax and the move was welcomed by health campaigners but attacked by the soft drinks industry. Mr Osborne said: “I am not prepared to look back at my time here in this Parliament, doing this job, and say to my children’s generation ‘I’m sorry. We knew there was a problem with sugary drinks. We knew it caused disease. But we ducked the difficult decisions and we did nothing’. “So today I can announce that we will introduce a new sugar levy on the soft drinks industry.”

Cocaine washes up on beach By Caroline Tyszka COCAINE, HIDDEN in punch bags, has been discovered by a woman walking along a beach on the island of Formentera. A woman, out for a stroll on Tuesday afternoon, discovered more than 4 million euros worth of cocaine, washed up on a local beach and caught up in seaweed. She immediately contacted the Guardia Civil, who found 83 kg of the class A drug in three punch bags, tied together and carrying a GPS system. Officers, who attended the scene at the Migjorn Beach, on the south part of the island, believe that the drugs were left outside the port area, to be retrieved at a later date.

Magician Paul Daniels dies by Caroline Tyszka

SID, DESCRIBED as a “smashing dog”, needs a home after becoming a resident of animal charity Jalon Valley ARC. His foster care arranged through another rescue organisation fell through and ARC hopes to find him another ‘forever home’ soon. And he is aged about three-years-old and is medium sized. He is chipped and has a passport. Sid is said to love fuss and cuddles and gets on with other dogs.

WELL-LOVED TV magician, Paul Daniels, sadly passed away during the early hours of Thursday after being diagnosed with a brain tumour. Paul, aged 77, lost his battle for life with his wife, Debbie McGee, at his side at their Berkshire home. A statement, issued from the magician’s publicist, said: “Debbie and the family would like to thank everyone for their support, and ask that their privacy be respected at this sad time.” Paul hosted his BBC magic show for 15 years, and married his then assistant, Debbie, in 1988. Born in Middlesbrough, he worked in many clubs before making his TV debut on the talent show, Opportunity Knocks, where

Legal challenge over EU vote by jack troughton

HIGH COURT proceedings were launched in London on Wednesday challenging the UK Government’s refusal to give a voice to two million expats in June’s EU Referendum. Law firm Leigh Day, based in the capital, is acting on behalf of veteran campaigner 94-year-old Harry Shindler, who lives in Italy, and lawyer Jacquelyn MacLennon, a resident of Belgium. In papers lodged by lawyers, both claim they are being illegally denied the right to vote on Britain’s continued membership of the EU. Despite the Conservative manifesto pledge in 2015 to introduce ‘votes for life’ and scrap the controversial rule that bans British citizens who have lived abroad for more than 15 years from voting, the government has not acted. The court case seeks urgent judicial review of the “unlawful” EU Referendum Act and EU law and lawyers will maintain the 15-year rule is a disincentive from and a penalty for, people exercising their free movement rights. It also prevents expats from participating in a democratic process which could result in the end of the very EU rights on which they rely to live and work abroad. And if successful, a judicial review would require the government to fast track legislation to change the franchise ahead of the June referendum ballot.

PENALISED Richard Stein, a lawyer with Leigh Day, said the firm’s clients were being “penalised” for exercising their freedom of movement. “The UK Referendum Act 2015 is said to be based on legislation for UK parliamentary elections. But it gives a vote in the EU Referendum to members of the House of Lords, as well as to Irish and Commonwealth citizens who are resident in Gibralter. None of these are allowed to vote in UK general elections. “The people it arbitrarily excludes are those UK citizens who are those most likely to be affected by the decision taken by voters in this referendum.” Britons across Europe feel betrayed at the government’s failure to return voting rights ahead of the referendum. Harry Shindler MBE said: “We will take any steps necessary to get the vote. “It is quite undemocratic and we have tried everything – I’ve written to the Prime Minister, it’s been raised in the House of Commons, to no avail. The only thing to do now is go to a court of law.” Two years ago when lobbying Brussels about voting rights, Harry was described by EU Justic Commissioner Viviane Reding as a “remarkable man” who had “lost his voice in the nation for which he fought.” And Costa Blanca campaigner Margaret Hales MBE added: “There are thousands of us Brits on the Spanish Costas disenfranchised in the upcoming crucial Referendum. Up until now we have been ignored, out of sight, out of mind. “What none of us can understand is why the Government of the Land of the Mother of Parliaments is at the forefront of anti-democratic practices.”

Syd still larger than life by JACK TROUGHTON

COMEDIAN SYD Little – once part of duo Little and Large – may have slipped from regular prime time television slots but still enjoys playing to an audience. Aged 73, and with former partner Eddie Large retired from showbiz through ill health, Syd is still game for a laugh and was one of the VIP’s at last weekend’s Home, Gardens and Lifestyle Show. Based in Fleetwood, he said he was still recognised in the street...although people frequently thought he was record producer Peter Waterman. Syd and Peter actually share a love of trains and model railways. And Syd, a special guest at the Denia Marriott Hotel and Spa, now has to explain his part in a very British double act as being like the modern day ‘Ant and Dec’ as the comic scene had changed; but added: “I do still love getting up on stage and doing a bit.” Based in Fleetwood, he said: “When Eddie had a heart transplant 15 years ago, I didn’t want to give up show business and decided to go on my own – and still am. “I used to do the cruise ships and get flown out to Miami. It sounds glamorous but you

are always either travelling or performing – and everyone is always asking ‘how is your mate?’...they always ask after Eddie. “It’s the first time I have been to this part of Spain, before it was always down south. I used to do ‘fly-backs’. They were once fun, you used to get three days in a hotel, do a show and relax. Now it is just fly out, perform, fly back.” PRESSURE A contestant in last year’s Celebrity Masterchef, Syd said he enjoyed life in the kitchen learning about herbs and spices. “It was a lot of pressure but they said we would learn how to cook and make things taste better.” And he revealed he did not miss being in a double act after 50 years with Eddie despite for a time enjoying a “great life”. Syd explained: “We outlived ‘Little and Large’; we did all we could do including 14 years of prime time television. At the end, the last series, we just felt we were regurgitating material we had rejected earlier. “You cannot keep rewriting the same script. Everyone has a shelf life and I thought we had passed ours and knew it.”

In the tradition of British double acts, he said Little and Large – like Laurel and Hardy – had the advantage of their very different physique for a gag. “The traditional double act is a dying breed and we were not the best in the world but the public liked us and I have

fond memories of that time,” said Syd. “I still get nervous before a show now as a 73-year-old but it shows you are still thinking about it and not taking anything for granted – and you can still be a good act and have something to give.”

Hotel ﬁre in Benidorm by CAROLINE TYSZKA

A BENIDORM hotel had to evacuate its guests at the weekend when the top floor was engulfed in flames. The fire, in the laundry room of the RH Victoria hotel, in the centre of Benidorm, meant that 400 people were taken to a nearby hotel in the early hours of last Saturday morning. Emergency services were called to the hotel at 6.30am on 12th March as the 20th floor storage area, used for laundry, caught fire and flames could be seen from the street. Within an hour, the firefighters had contained the blaze, and guests were allowed to return to their rooms at 7.40am - although the smell of smoke through the ventilation system took hours to subside. Guests sent to the RH Royal hotel, just a few metres from the Victoria, until the all clear was given by the authorities, praised the efficiency of the management of the evacuation. A spokesperson for the emergency services said that there were no serious injuries, although one Dutch guest experienced a panic attack and was treated at the scene.

Literature competition fraud A BRITISH man has been charged with fraudulently obtaining money by creating a bogus literature competition. A British citizen set up a competition for “young writers” in Spain, inviting schools across the country to submit students’ short stories for publication, then charging the parents 13€ for a copy of the finished book. However, no such book existed. It is believed the man, who had operated a similar scam in the UK, managed to bank 195,000€ from pre-book sales, and had also used a website to entice millions of clients to show an interest in his fraudulent business. Operating from Malaga, in Spain, the British man has now fled the country, clearing all his bank accounts, both here and in the UK. Although police sources believe him now to be planning a similar operation in France, Spanish prosecutors are calling for a six year sentence, once he has been captured.

Fake nurse held over baby theft

by IAN ASKEW A FAKE nurse, who attempted to steal two babies in Cartagena, was later arrested by police in Valencia attempting to abduct a third newborn. Officers of the Policía Nacional were called after parents became suspicious when the 21 year old imposter claimed she was taking the baby to perform a medical test. The woman, a Spanish national, was held at Valencia’s La Fe Hospital. In the pockets of the uniform she was wearing, allegedly stolen from the Santa Lucía Hospital in Cartagena, officers discovered a bus ticket, issued in Murcia, showing she had arrived in Valencia at 3pm on Sunday. And further investigation revealed that the woman earlier tried to steal the two babies from the Cartagena hospital the same day, using the same ruse; the need to carry out a test. Again the Santa Lucia babies’ parents had doubted her story, since the tests had already been performed. Historic building goes up in flames by Caroline Tyszka A HISTORIC building in Manchester was severely damaged this week following a fierce blaze breaking out in the roof area. The 16th century Wythenshawe Hall, in Manchester, caught fire at 3.30am on Tuesday, with fifty fire-fighters desperately trying to save as much of the Tudor building as possible. Using a cherry-picker, the firemen managed to get water into the roof space – the seat of the fire - although the first floor area and roof could not be saved. Warren Pickstone, the fire services area manager, said, at the scene: “We are doing everything we can to save as much as possible. Access to the roof has been difficult, but we are doing our best.” Insp. Luke Breakspear. of Greater Manchester police. said: “The investigation into how this fire began is in its infancy. However, we are now treating it as suspicious. “ We are appealing for anyone who may have any information, or may have seen anyone in the area in the early hours of Tuesday morning, to come forward.” The hall was built in 1540, and donated to the public in 1930 as a museum and art gallery. Whilst it was closed in 2010 by Manchester City Council, it reopened in 2012 to visitors, assisted by the Friends of Wythenshawe Hall volunteer group.

AVE delayed

by IAN ASKEW THE PLAN to bring the high-speed train to the City of Cartagena has been sitting in a regional government drawer now for eight months. The Minister of Development in the regional government, Francisco Bernabé, confirmed this week that “we must wait” for a new government to be formed in Madrid, in order for the new AVE plan to be presented.

For months, Bernabé has talked about the project moving forward, but this week, for the first time, he has admitted that it will not be possible “until the interim situation is resolved” in Madrid. Cartagena’s mayor, José López, has been trying, since last summer, to get agreement for the proposed route to bring the AVE to the city. In addition, López wants a bypass to be built in Beniel so that trains from Madrid to Cartagena need not pass through Murcia.

Documents, containing 22,000 names, addresses, telephone numbers and family contact details of IS fighters, were handed to a Sky News reporter on a memory stick that had been stolen from the head of Islamic State’s Internal security police. Abu Hamed, who obtained the memory stick, was a former Free Syrian Army convert to Islamic State, before becoming disillusioned with the group and fleeing to Turkey. The Sky news chief correspondent, Stuart Ramsay, who has built up a relationship with Hamed, and many other former IS group members, met the former jihadi at a secret location in Turkey to be given the information. The documents will be an invaluable source of information in the fight against terrorism, giving detailed, and often still current, contact names and numbers for nationals of over 51 countries, including the UK. Abu was asked if he felt these files could bring the IS network down and simply said “god willing.”

Climbing mountains for animal welfare by patricia thompson

UK RESIDENT Elaine Sissons is preparing to climb mountains to raise funds for horses rescued from abuse and neglect in Spain. The 60-year-old will take on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge on March 26th, raising cash for Spain’s Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre while climbing the three peaks that make up the Pennine Range: Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen-y-Ghent. Elaine began practicing on the rugged mountains around her holiday home in the southeastern Alicante region. “I have never done a marathon before or climbed three mountains in succession,” Elaine said. After meeting Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre co-founders Sue and Rod Weeding Elaine began volunteering in the centre’s La Zenia charity shop. After returning to the United Kingdom, Elaine decided she would continue her sup-port and, last year, raised 571€ for the rescue centre by completing a tandem

sky diving jump for her 60th birthday, and hopes to raise even more during this year’s Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge. The centre relies entirely on donations to fund its important animal welfare work, including the feeding and care of the centre’s more than 90 horses, ponies and donkeys rescued from abuse, neglect and abandonment. Top Gear accused of insensitivity by CAROLINE TYSZKA THE TOP GEAR programme has come under scrutiny again, criticised as “insensitive” for filming noisy stunts around the Cenotaph in London. Chris Evans and Matt LeBlanc, the new presenters for the BBC Top Gear programme, later apologised after they filmed ‘donuts’ at the controversial location. The programme makers had scheduled the Top Gear stunt to be filmed in Whitehall and had official permission from Westminster Council. However, photographs appeared in the British press portraying cars speeding around the war memorial in total disregard for the sensitive location. Chris Evans said on his BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show: “I apologise unreservedly for what these images seem to portray. They look entirely disrespectful, which of course was not and would never be the intention of the Top Gear team, or Matt who was driving the car.” Col. Richard Kemp, a former British military commander, said on a BBC Radio 5 show that the memorial should be “treated as a cemetery” and should be shown the same respect. Even the Chancellor, George Osborne, tweeted: ‘Trying to write my budget, despite noisy episode of @BBC TopGear being filmed outside on Horse Guards Parade. Keep it down please @achrisevans.”

Assassins wanted

JAPAN PLANS to make a killing through ‘warlord tourism’ and is looking to hire six full-time ninja to attract visitors to the Aichi prefecture. Physical fitness and acrobatic skills are needed for the 2,000€ a month jobs rather than any specialist knowledge of 15th Century warfare. Historically ninja were Japanese mercenaries specialising in espionage, assassination, sabotage, and other forms of guerrilla warfare – roles seen below the military nobility of the samurai, who followed strict codes on honourable fighting. However, the job specification has changed somewhat for anyone considering sending in an application by the 22nd March deadline. Instead applicants, who must be aged over 18, should enjoy stage performances and PR work for radio and television. Combat experience is not a necessity and a record of dispatching people would positively be frowned upon. And despite the historic secrecy surrounding ninja, applicants should “enjoy being under the spotlight” and as candidates will have to sometimes use English, it appears language skills are an advantage and a passion for history essential. Training will also be quicker than learning the undercover work of the past; successful applicants are expected to be performing by the end of April. There is already an established ninja museum in neighbouring Mie prefecture. The city of Iga is branded as the ‘home’ of the secret fighters. A very real historical phenomenon, although much of the ninja story is based on legend and myth, the mercenaries gradually disappeared as Japan unified in the 17th Century. They may have become little more than a curiosity and shady characters for electronic games, but the country is keen to exploit its history – and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has pledged to increase tourism in the run in to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Terror in Turkey

A CAR bomb, packed with explosives, killed at least 37 people in Ankara, Turkey, at the weekend. Suspected Kurdish militants were believed to be behind the car bomb that exploded on Sunday. The car explosion was close to a bus, and caused several other vehicles to catch fire – more than 100 were injured, some said to be critical. Following the second attack in the city in less than a month, Turkey responded immediately by sending warplanes to bomb Kurdish targets in Northern Iraq. And Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said following the attack: “Terrorism will be brought to its knees...the struggle against terrorism will end in success.” World leaders also responded to the attack, with Vladimir Putin, the Russian President, saying the incident was “inhuman.” The Australian ambassador to Turkey, James Larsen, was in a car just 20m away from where the bomb was detonated, and was said to be in shock but unharmed.

Westerns were great, but a western set in Oz was fan-blooming-tastic. My parents agreed I could emigrate Down Under as a £10 immigrant when I reached 18, in hindsight, with rather intemperate glee. 1960’s Australia was a whole lot different then, rather dowdy. When you came into land the pilot would announce “Ladies & Gentlemen we are about to touch down at Sydney International Airport, please set your watches back - 20 years.” Make no mistake it was a very conservative country, however today Sydney is the gay capital of the Pacific Rim (I sense a lurking euphemism) and is generally a cosmopolitan liberal place. Then, Australians didn’t outwardly acknowledge gays among the 11½ million population (Melbourne had a bit of a bohemian reputation so it was rumoured 2 or 3 were there – to general disbelief). The Aborigines only got the vote in 1963 – mind you Queensland held out until 1965, but you have to remember that in those days ‘Banana Benders’ (locals) made a KKK rally look like a fusion of a Women’s Institute Bring & Buy sale and a Mary Berry Bake Off. Although some pompous Poms were about as welcome as a Rabbi in Riyadh, I can’t say I was ever a full-on victim of Pom bashing, just the occasional skirmish,and the questioning of my parents marital status when I was born. Soon learnt it wasn’t prudent to venture into a rough dockside bar – the type of place where the ashtrays were kneecaps and order all hoity-toity “A pint of your finest mead my man, and make it snappy.” Such a place was in an area of Sydney called The Rocks, now marketing the gentry instead of mugging the gentry. All baristas & boutiques opposed to burglars & brothels. So I learnt ‘Strine’ PDQ with the odd snide jibe. “How do you get a Pom out of the bath?” “Put some water in it.” Mind you before I went native I got this one in at passport control. Security.“Have you got a criminal record?” Me.“Why, do I still need one to come in?” Boom Boom Bruce! You can’t beat the British Beano.

DEAR LAWYER, In recent years the local taxes we pay for our villa in Spain have multiplied. I have asked at the Town Hall, and they told me that it is because the property used to be classified as rustic, and is now considered as developable (possibility to be urbanised), but there are no plans to urbanize it. Is this correct? Can we do something? Dear reader, thank you for your enquiry. Although it is impossible to provide you with a legal advice without reviewing in detail the documents and specific information regarding your situation, it is possible you may be affected by a review of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;cadastralâ&#x20AC;? rating or classification of your property. It often happens when a rustic property or undeveloped (non urbanisable) land is reclassified as developable (urbanisable), its cadastral value is reviewed, giving a value as developable property, which is much higher than that of a rustic property. However, this may happen without any actual project being approved for any development or any relevant planning instruments. The consequence of this revision of the cadastral value is that there are rustic properties, which have been formally classified as developable, but with the crisis or for whatever reason, they will not be developed, so they will remain for practical purposes as rustic for many years, but, as they are formally recognized as developable, they are taxed as such, and their cadastral value is much greater than the actual value. On this situation, the Supreme Court of Spain granted a judgment on the 30th of May 2014, stating that the cadastral value cannot be based solely on the classification of the property, so that land or property should only be valued as urban or developable and taxed as such when it is actually able to be really urbanized, i.e., the developable properties without development should be kept as rustic valuation for cadastral effects. Readers should note that this is an issue of great importance, because a much higher cadastral value will mean numerous negative consequences, especially of a fiscal nature, such as: a higher yearly IBI (Property Tax / Local tax). If the property is transferred (sale, inheritance, gift) we would pay to the Town Hall a much higher Municipal Plusvalia (Gain) than we should. In fact, we should not pay anything if it is considered rustic. It also affects the Income Tax for Residents and Non Residents, since we pay these taxes for properties that are not our main residence, based on their cadastral value, so we would be overpaying. It has bad consequences on inheritance and gift tax, because the cadastral value is used to determine the minimum property value for these taxes. If the cadastral value is much lower, the valuation of the property for the purposes of succession and donation - gift will be much lower, which will mean major tax savings. If you or someone you know is in this situation, you should request a revision of the cadastral value, and request that your urbanisable property that is not developed is valued as rustic based on the said judgment of the Supreme Spanish Court, you can also request and claim for a refund of the amount overpaid on the mentioned taxes. Remember that a lower cadastral value will mean large tax savings in the present and future. Contact Us.

Many UK expatriates do not realise that they remain UK-domiciled even if they have left the UK and are no longer resident in the UK and therefore subject to UK Inheritance Tax (IHT) on their worldwide estate at a rate of 40 per cent after allowances.

This can come as a major shock. What can be done about this? There are several options. Transfers of wealth on death between husband and wife are exempt from IHT, but only if the spouse is also domiciled in the UK (or both are non-domiciled). This catches out many expatriates who have married a foreign passport holder who is likely to be domiciled elsewhere. Even then the IHT is only delayed rather than avoided, because on the death of the survivor the tax will be payable on the passing of the family assets to the next generation. IHT can be mitigated by giving away assets at least seven years before death. This is not an attractive option, as a person rarely know when they are going to die, and will seldom be content to rely on their relatives to maintain them so this is generally a non-starter. But there is another option, and one which is finding increasing favour, that is the qualifying non-UK pension scheme (QNUPS). A QNUPS is exempt from UK IHT on the member’s death There can be problems if the only reason for setting up a QNUPS is to avoid UK IHT. There is a danger that, where the member is in ill health and sets up the QNUPS with the sole objective of avoiding IHT, HMRC could seek to attack the arrangement. They would do this by trying to claim the pension was essentially a sham and was no different to a normal trust. This could lead to the member suffering a lifetime IHT charge on the transfer into the QNUPS, and a further charge on his death if he were to die within seven years. But there are so many other advantages in setting up a QNUPS that it should be easy to point to, and which have been well documented, these alternative and additional motives, and thereby rebut this suggestion if it were ever made. The most important part of moving monies/assets to QNUPS is that it is seen as a genuine ‘pension’ – so the earlier you do it the better. The UK Government has shown that it is not beyond raiding UK pensions when it needs money to prop up its own finances. At the moment it needs money arguably more than at any time since the Second World War. This is not unique to the UK Government. Most of the EU governments are in the same boat. Anything which puts assets into a friendlier tax climate allows more flexibility in their administration and draws down and carries substantial IHT tax advantages would seem to be a very attractive proposition which everyone should grab with both hands. A QNUPS can hold most assets: subject to the Trustees consent including UK Residential property (but not your main residence) , fine wine, fine art, antiques may all be acceptable. Assets which will depreciate, such as cars and yachts, are generally excluded Your investment decisions should be based on your specific circumstances and objectives. SPAIN’S FIRST tribute band to rock legends Pink Floyd makes a rare live appearance on the Costa Blanca on Wednesday 23rd March in aid of charity Grant A Wish. The Pink Floyd Experience – Jools Cooper, Christian Pearl, Stewart Collier and saxophonist Carmelo Fresnedo - is performing at the Casa de Cultura in el Verger...backed by an amazing laser light show.

And while the running list of the gig remains a secret, it will feature the most well-known and popular of Pink Floyd favourites – plus the Experience’s own version of the megaselling album Dark side of the Moon. Jools formed the tribute in 1999 and the Pink Floyd Experience travelled and played extensively across Spain until 2010. The guitarist, who still frequently plays live as a solo act and with rock band The Rockets, he formed Frakah and won the Melody Maker ‘Folk Rock’ contest in 1976.

The same year he found himself commuting into London with sound engineer Brian Humphries to the Britannia Row studios where Pink Floyd was recording the album ‘Animals’. The band’s guitarist Dave Gilmour encouraged the young musician to bring his guitar to the sessions and play – he learnt a great deal and still pays tribute to his Floyd mentor. Jools moved to Spain in the 1980s and formed The Rockets with drummer Geoff Britton, ex-Wings and Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, and bassist Steve Emery, ex-Stretch and Eric Clapton. He continues to work as a session musician and his playing with Spanish artists can frequently be heard on the radio. Stewart is a guitarist, singer, writer and producer and has been playing in the music business for over 20 years; working with a range of bands such as Aerosmith, Meatloaf, Alanis Morrisette, Tori Amos, Alice Cooper, The Stereophonics and Primal Scream.

He was also a key member of ‘Teen Spirit’, playing legend Kurt Cobain in the world’s number one Nirvana tribute – and in this guise has performed on television for the BBC and MTV, as well as live across the globe. Gardening by the moon We have used a Spanish translation of a French calendar for the past fifteen years. Right now you have to prioritise and give someone the benefit of the doubt when it comes to a nagging issue best done and dusted as soon as possible, and then forgotten about. Mercury trines Mars and brings strong reactions in so doing as the Cosmos shifts again for good reason. To be perfectly frank you saw the writing on the wall and you knew what was happening but decided to do nothing about it. Now as things move on a step it is clear that you have your reasons, and this is why you are holding your cards close to your chest. Partnership issues get in the way of a solution, and you can blame the Saturn overlay for last minute changes to schedule. Indecisions are a thorn in the side right now and something has to be done that will bring dividends to all who are rightly involved or implicated, at the very least. Take time to make a solution really work by getting the thumbs up it deserves and remember that you are making an effort to keep the peace. A wayward Mercury moves in on Neptune to emphasise the matter. Come out of your shell this week and do not refuse an invitation, which turns out to be a lot more than it seems to be. If someone wants to make a mountain over a molehill then let them, but air your views very strongly and walk away from any conflict you may encounter on the way, with you head held high. SO MANY good spiritual people feel that they are alone in their devotion to the actions of the Spirit World.

The World is noticing a great increase in the number of people openly believing in the principals of a belief in life after death, and that many of us have reincarnated to be here at this time. The shift that we are awaiting is the chance for spiritually enabled persons to work together for the elimination of some of the atrocities that this World subjects its people to; and a true chance to put a spiritual energy into practise for the betterment of each our unknown but anticipated futures. Many of us want to be a part of a future that has clarity and reality, and where decisions could be made hand in hand with spiritually acceptable doctrines. Earthed and ready for action there are many who are taking up the call for sweeping changes that allow us to live in harmony and peace in a World where poverty has been swept away and loving care replaces the greed and extortion the current World is enslaved to. Africa is one of the richest Countries in the World in terms of natural resources, but its people are kept in disease and poverty, and many who die daily do so because of a lack of a simple human right of the access to clean fresh drinking water. Undernourished children and barren fields of crops are commonplace and the human suffering is appallingly unacceptable at a time when Space exploration is deemed more important than saving a human life. The call to Spirit has come because so many people have begun to realise that death is not the end of anything, but it is in fact the great beginning instead. Whilst programmes on the television have infiltrated our homes with Psychic messages; and many are encouraged to make positive contact with deceased loved ones who have passed into the Spirit World, there comes a great change in attitude. The fear of being thought to be mad or stupid has been replaced with a more permanent acceptance that the Spirit World does actually exist, and that the dead are capable of communication; and the subsequent comfort that this two way communication can bring. Whenever fear is involved in anything it brings discomfort and misery, apprehension and stress. For many the fear of speaking to the dead was stopping the clearest channels from working the way that they should. O.K. there are still those people who are afraid that we shouldn’t disturb the dead because they are sleeping, but even they are opening up to their own significant psychic centres and realising that we can not only communicate with the Other Side, but also as a result we can greatly learn by what knowledge the deceased can pass on to us Earth dwellers. As Conspiracy theories become rapidly conspiracy facts we also know a lot about the hidden agendas that are threatening our Earth, and that we are nearing many important changes in the way we will live in the future. Spirit supports the continuity of the soul and so has a vested interest in anything that is remotely going to stop this process. There is no antidote necessary for the loving care and spiritual energy that is sent daily to sentient beings throughout the World, and their numbers are escalating very nicely too! There is no fear in being able to communicate our beliefs and no shame in anyone knowing that we are truly the spiritual beings that we undoubtedly are. The truth is out there and Spirit are geared up to help us any which way that they can...that’s what life and death is all about, after all!

What is such a priority to us often transcribes as not to be such a big number for Spirit, who, after all, have a blueprint of our life and who know when we need to act in certain prescribed ways. It can be that we are putting an emphasis on something that would be best left to chance or to fate. Silence is never a good reply, but then sometimes what we ask for meets with no response. It isn’t a refusal to answer, which would worry some of us greatly; more it is a way of holding back what has to happen until the time is right, the secret of which is part of the general reveal that brings the unexpected into our lives!

NEW SENTENCING guidelines have been announced for dog owners who train their animals to be deliberately aggressive. New guidelines, that are set to come into force in July for England and Wales, will see judges able to sentence dog owners to up to fourteen years in prison, depending on the severity of the crime. Those owners who deliberately train their dogs to attack, use them as a weapon or have a banned breed, where a victim dies, will face the tougher penalties, under the Dangerous Dogs Act, which was made in 2014. The Act now lists, as an offence, any attacks that take part on private land, offering protection for postal workers, as well as someone being injured in another person’s home. The guidelines will enable judges to assess how much blame can be attached to the dog owners, whereas, currently, there is no definite rule. District Judge, Richard Williams, a member of the Sentencing Council, said: “We know that the majority of dog owners

Spanish oranges rejected THE CHINESE authorities have destroyed tons of Spanish oranges and lemons that they say did not meet stringent sanitary conditions. The Office of Inspection and Quarantine, at the Chinese port of Tianjin, destroyed over 2,000 boxes of citrus fruit from Spain on Tuesday, saying that they did not meet the sanitary requirements of the country. Valued at almost 14,000€, the fruit was transported without its official registration and labelling documentation, and was, reportedly, not chilled enough to meet China’s regulations. The fruit was transported by vehicles to a special area, where it was buried in a deep hole. The Chinese authorities require imported citrus fruit to be transported heavily chilled, to prevent and control any outbreak of Mediterranean fruit fly. China has, in the past, fallen victim to many consumer complaints regarding food safety. However, this has rarely affected imported fruit from Spain. The export of oranges and lemons to China is worth nearly 3.4 billion euros, a figure that has been increasing year on year.

ISSUE He said corruption had become a major issue for the Spanish people in recent polls, second only to employment. “If a company is corrupt, one has to assume that amongst senior managers there are conscious decisions being made to be so,” said Dick. “There is plenty of evidence that plenty of companies are not that truthful with customers, suppliers, staff, or share holders.” And he added: “People are getting very concerned about the size and power of the multinationals, some of which have a larger turnover than the GDP of a small country.” He said the guide, available through Amazon, allowed companies large and small to look at their own situation and improve towards best practice. “People have to get back to doing more thinking about where they fit against best practice through self-assessment; to look at their company ethics regarding developing and marketing company products.”

Easter Fair fun for the family

WITH ONLY a week to go until the long weekend, an Easter Fair in Albir gives visitors a chance to buy special gifts and enjoy an afternoon of fun. Katie Dell, who organised a Christmas Fair at the Sun Palace Hotel in Albir last December, has organised the event on 20th March 2016, at the same venue. The Christmas Fair attracted over 2,000 people so the Easter event will be expanded over two floors at the hotel as well as using the outdoor terraces. Katie said: “We will have nearly 100 stalls this time and a mermaid display in the hotel’s outdoor swimming pool, as well as princesses greeting the little ones.” Stalls will include a tombola, hog roast, bouncy castles, face painting, crafts, and beauty. Children will be able to have their photo taken with the Easter bunny and receive an Easter egg. The event, which is free to attend, starts at 1pm and finishes at 6pm. On the Licor trail MEMBERS OF U3A Marina Baixa travelled south to taste the Spanish liqueur ‘Licor 43’ and marvel at its secret formula. The 55-strong group arrived at the factory near Cartagena for the Licor 43 Experience Chillout Bar – tasting the drink with coffee for the first sample of the day. The party toured the museum and factory of the Zamora family who developed the drink in 1946. Its name comes from the number of ingredients in the drink. Still blended by a third-generation of the family, the mixing aging and cooling process takes between six and nine months before it is bottled. After the tour there was more sampling before a visit to the brand’s shop where souvenirs and bottles of the liqueur were purchased before the happy brand enjoyed a well-earned late lunch.

From tomato to mango by Ian Askew IN AN effort to get the famers of the Mazarrón area, traditionally a pretty conservative bunch, and resistant to change, to consider new subtropical crops as an alternative to traditional plantations, the Town Council, together with the Ministry of Water, Agriculture and Environment are holding, on April 7th, a technical conference on the introduction of subtropical fruit. According to the Councillor for Agriculture, Isabel María López, “It is an alternative initiative to strengthen the agricultural sector by providing new ideas and new types of crops, with the economic benefits that this could bring for the municipality.” The Duran company has already started to grow papaya and mango in Mazarrón. José Tomás Gallego, municipal agricultural technician, said: “we are trying to address the agronomic requirements, and marketing aspects, as well as providing information on food and nutrition that will showcase the culinary uses of papaya with a demonstration by the chef Pablo Gómez San Miguel”. Gallego argues that “these are new crops that can adapt to existing infrastructures that our farmers are not using. Subtropical crops have begun to be implemented successfully in Almeria and coastal Málaga. “The municipality has similar climatic conditions to ensure successful cultivation, as these products have to be between 20 and 30 degrees and not suffer sudden changes in temperature”.

How ´fat with cash´ does Beyonce want to be? WAY BACK in 1937 a film called ´A Star is Born´ was made starring Janet Gaynor and Frederic March, then in 1954 Judy Garland and James Mason starred in a re-make, then in 1976 Kris Kristofferson and Barbra Streisand did their version of the film, and now actor Bradley Cooper plans to make his directorial debut of the movie, but this apparent juggernaut of a master plan has come up against the most difficult of problems. I´ve seen all three versions, and each one is a real treat, but this irresistible storyline of a wannabee singer falling for a fading actor addicted to the bottle has hit the wall bigtime, and the ugly business of money is behind it all. Bradley and his team decided Beyonce would be the ideal female lead but a source told the New York Post’s Page Six: ‘Beyonce wanted too much money, and Warner Bros. balked at her price,” OMG! How much did she ask for? Beyonce and husband Jay-Z have ruffled the feathers of many in the music business, and in virtually each case it´s gone way off the scale in the dosh area, and here they are doing it in the film business. The couple are regularly referred to in the media as American Royalty and it’s extremely sad to realise that for all their fame and fortune they still want to fill a cup that is already brimming over. THE PASSING of George Martin was quite rightly marked by creative people from across the spectrum of the entertainment world, most especially musicians of course. FOR SOME inexplicable reason The National Enquirer in America has been printing the most outrageous stories over the years, and are particularly keen on rubbing Cher´s nose in the poopski. A story snuck out last year that the singer was dying! Honest to god! The latest that´s about to burst open is that Cher and her son Elijah Blue Allman are in the middle of a full on feud, and Cher jumped onto the merry-go-round as only she can. “Family fights ´r bad, ours was horrible,” she said, as well as mentioning someone she called “obsessed haters,” accusing them of selling stories to the Enquirer. Oh dear oh dear!

JOHN GOODMAN made 11 movies before he came to prominence in 1988 playing Dan Connor alongside Roseanne Barr in the wonderfully funny Roseanne. He´s gone on to prove he´s an extremely versatile actor and has been nominated 14 times for his work in the movies. John has always been BIG, but was spotted last week looking considerably slimmer having lost an almighty 100 pounds. He said “I´ve stuck to a “Mediterraneanstyle eating plan,” Alrighty!! “It takes a lot of creative energy to sit on your ass and figure out what you’re going to eat next!” he added. Thanks Slim!

In their home contest last Saturday night singer Margaret sung ´Cool Me Down´ and won the support of many. Then a guy called Michal Szpak came along with song ´The Colour of Your Life´ and all hell broke loose. That was because Michal won the right to represent Poland in May, but Margaret´s supporters only went ahead and petitioned the government to change it back to pre-contest favourite song ´Cool me Down.´ Something they should all do.

Millionth cruise passenger comes to Cartagena by Caroline Tyszka THE PORT of Cartagena started its 2016 cruise season, which runs until December 20th, with the arrival last Saturday of 3,600 tourists on board the cruise ship ‘Ventura’. Amongst the passengers was the millionth cruise ship tourist to land in Cartagena, and Mr. and Mrs. Young, the lucky ones, were duly fêted by the authorities as they came ashore. Antonio Sevilla, president of the Port Authority of Cartagena and Obdulia Gómez Bernal, Councillor of Industry, Tourism, Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, were there to greet them. This was the Youngs’ twelfth visit to the city of Cartagena and Mrs Young said “it is a real luxury to land in the heart of the city. Fifteen years ago we came here for the first time and we have seen the city’s dramatic transformation. Every time, we discover something new.” They were treated to their own exclusive tourist guide for the day, and given a tour of the city. Antonio Sevilla presented them with a commemorative plaque on behalf of the Port Authority, the Councillor of Tourism handed them typical gifts of Cartagena and the director of El Corte Inglés, Alfredo Carvajal, gave them a 150€ voucher, valid for that day.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

The verb “estrenar” I’ve always been rather fond of discovering words that have no direct translation in English, although they can be really tricky to explain to other people. A very good example of this is the verb “estrenar”. Let’s start off with a dictionary definition to give us some idea of the meaning. My dictionary says: “to use for the first time”, “to wear for the first time”, “to show off for the first time”, “to show for the first time, “to perform for the first time”. Here are some other definitions gathered from here and there: “to launch”, “to release”, “to premier”, “to make one’s debut” with this latter definition translating the reflexive form “estrenarse”. The only sane way of understanding the use of this word is to see it in context. One of its most obvious associations is with show business. Here are some examples: “Antonio Banderas, el actor y director malagueño, estrena un drama musical.” (Antonio Banderas, the actor and director from Malaga, is releasing a new musical drama.) “Pedro Almodóvar estrenó “La Mala Educación” en Hollywood.” (Pedro Almodóvar premiered “La Mala Educación” in Hollywood) From this basic meaning we can expand the use of “estrenar” to express all sorts of everyday meanings. “Estreno estos zapatos hoy” (I’m wearing these shoes for the first time today). “Esta blusa está sin estrenar” (I haven’t worn this blouse yet). Already you can see that direct translations of this word are impossible, and we have to find a phrase that provides the same meaning in English, depending on the exact context. At some time you may have been looking at advertisements in the newspaper, or in an estate agents window and come across this phrase: “Se vende piso a estrenar”. It means that a brand new flat, or at least, a flat that hasn’t been lived in before, is for sale. The literal meaning is: “One sells a flat to be used for the first time” – now translate that into English! Here is an interesting sentence I’ve just come across: “Este año todavía no me he ido de fiesta. Estoy sin estrenar”. (This year I haven’t been to a party yet. I am “sin estrenar” – without being shown off for the first time?!) As you can see, words start to fail and we’re into the territory of things that can be said so neatly in one language, and just don’t exist in another. When we are talking about old and new clothing, there is rather a nice “sort-of” opposite to THE ANNUAL Easter Antiques and Collectors Fair is again being staged at Salones the word “estrenar”, which is “estar visto” (literally: to be seen”). If you don’t want to wear Canor, Teulada, on Good Friday, 25th March. something that you have worn lots of times already, you can say: “No quiero ponerme ese vestido, está muy visto”. Is your home earthquake proof? (Part I) I am afraid that under the current circumstances it may not be ethically correct to ask that question right now, but I am sure that more than one reader had wondered about the stability of their homes before an earthquake specially as we are on earthquake zone.

Although it is a highly technical matter, I believe that we can converse about the subject circumscribing to general information, so that at the end of the following expositions some of us (including me, I had to carry out some research on the subject and dust up the old text books) would understand a little better how our buildings literally stand up, should an earthquake occur around East Spain. The zones most likely to occur earthquakes in Spain are in Granada, Murcia and Alicante. In recent years in Spain, earthquakes with magnitudes greater than 4 degrees (Richter scale) have taken place causing considerable damage to buildings. For example, the earthquakes in Andalusia on Dec. 23rd , 1993 and January 4th, 1994 with a intensity in both cases of 5.0 degrees and with epicentres in the province of Almería, near the towns of San Roque and Berja, and 20 km from the coast off Almerimar Balerma and Bath respectively (Yépez, 1994). In Galicia on May 22nd, 1997 with intensity 5.1 and centred near the towns of Sarria and Becerreá and the latest occurred in Murcia on February 2nd, 1999, of intensity 5.0 and centred about 5 km north of Mula (Mena, in1999). There are historical records of great seismic activity in south Europe in countries such as Turkey, Greece, Yugoslavia, Italy, Portugal, and of course Spain. Devastating earthquakes, as was the one on 1st of November 1755 on the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula, producing high waves and its destructive power caused between 50,000 and 70,000 deaths. In Lisbon and surroundings areas on December the 25th of 1884, an earthquake killed 800 people. In Alicante in the year 1500, another earthquake destroyed some

4,400 homes and damaged 13,000. In Messina Italy, 28th of December 1908 an earthquake killed 120,000 people and caused considerable damage in the infrastructure of the city. The two seismic activities which have produced the highest numbers of deaths happened in China, one in 1556 in the province of Shaanxi, where 830.000 people died and more recently, in 1976 an earthquake of intensity 7,6 in the region of Tangshan, generated 650.000 deaths. I haven’t found records on the economic losses which obviously are concatenated with disasters of that enormity, and most important o all, there are no way of quantifying grieve and suffering generated by the loss of loved ones. It is not a trivial issue what we have here. But why do earthquakes occur? Earthquakes occur when stresses accumulated due to the deformation of the earth layers are released abruptly. Broken masses of rocks sometimes large as whole mountains are subject to enormous forces and rearrange themselves releasing enormous energies that shake the earth surface with tremendous force. The (hypocenters) are located at different depths, the deepest being up to 700 kilometres. They are particularly common near the edges of tectonic plates. Believe it or not, there are about one million earthquakes recorded every year, although most of them are of such low intensity that goes unnoticed by us. They act instantaneously over a wide area and can cause seismic waves, (tsunami) similar to the recent one in Japan that was transmitted live world wide and may also cause landslides, appearance and disappearance of springs, construction damage and deaths, mostly due to the collapsing of buildings. They are very difficult to predict and, at present, there are no effective systems to warn people in advance of an imminent earthquake. Intensity and magnitude of earthquakes To describe the strength of an earthquake and resulting damage, there different scales that measure their intensity and magnitude.

We can measure its intensity, which is a subjective measure of the effects of earthquakes on the earth surface, people and man-made structures but without using any technical instruments. It is based on observing the consequences that take place during an earthquake. It is useful to explain an earthquake in areas where there are no seismographs near and enable us to compare ancient earthquakes. The magnitude is an objective measure of the energy of an earthquake which is reflected by seismographs. The best known and used scale is the Richter scale (1935) and measures the logarithm of the maximum amplitude of a seismogram recorded by a standard instrument, at a distance of 100 kilometres from the epicentre. This method has been corrected later, but the basic idea remains the same. As the scale is logarithmic every step up involves multiplying by the ten the intensity of the lower number. i.e. Roughly speaking an earthquake grade 7 is equal to one of intensity 6 multiply by ten. There are 12 degrees in the scale from 1 to 12 being 1 so small that is only felt by technical apparatus. An earthquake measuring 12 on the Richter scale would break the earth in two. This concept allows classification of earthquakes: Complete destruction M = 12 Large earthquakes M>=7 Moderate earthquakes 5=<M<7 Small earthquakes 3=<M<5 Micro earthquakes M<3 The EMS scale is officially used in most European countries and is utilized in the calculation of building and all types of structures by architects and engineers in Spain known as “Norma de Construcción Sismorresistente: Parte General y Edificación (Ncsr-02)” Earthquake-Resistant Norm. Now that we have established the basic principles for measuring earthquakes, in the next issues of CBN we will examine what precautions we architect take when designing buildings in Spain.

Summer is coming Maple Smoked ribs STICKY, SWEET, savory, fall off the bone; everything smoked ribs should be. By using both the maple plank and the maple syrup you achieve a deep and unforgettable flavor. INGREDIENTS 2 lb pork side ribs 1 cup pure maple syrup 3 tbsp frozen orange juice concentrate 3 tbsp ketchup 2 tbsp soy sauce 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 tsp curry powder 1 clove garlic, minced 2 green onions, minced 1 tbsp toasted sesame seeds DIRECTIONS 1. Soak maple planks in sink or clean bucket filled with water for at least 1 hour. (this can be done during first stage of cooking the ribs) 2. Light one side of your barbecue, and preheat until temperature gauge shows 350°F. Place ribs meat side up in a roasting pan. Cover pan tightly with foil and place on the unlit side of your barbecue. Bake for 1

1/4 hours. This step can also be done in the oven.

3. In a saucepan over MEDIUM heat on the stove or on the sideburner of the barbecue, combine maple syrup, orange juice concentrate, ketchup, soy sauce, mustard and Worcestershire sauce. Stir in curry powder, garlic and green onions. Simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. 4. Remove ribs from roasting pan, and baste completely meat side and bone side with still warm sauce. Retain 1/2 of sauce for additional basting. Place ribs on soaked maple planks bone side down. Put the planks with the ribs on them on one side of the barbecue with LOW heat setting directly underneath them. Turn the other side of the barbecue to HIGH and close lid. Keep temperature around 350°F. Planks should begin to smoke within a few minutes, and produce a sweet fragrant smoke in your barbecue. Adjust the amount of smoke you would like to add by increasing/ decreasing direct heat underneath the planks, and opening/closing the lid. Do not allow planks to catch fire. Allow ribs to cook on the planks for 25 minutes. Use remaining sauce to baste ribs several times throughout cooking. Remove planks with ribs on them from the grill and place the planks directly on a plate or tray for serving.

Clams in white wine ADD THE clams to a bowl and add 2 tablespoons of salt and cover with water, and set aside for about 1 hour, this will realise any grit they have inside of the clams Chop the onion and slice garlic. In a large frying pan, add a drizzle of olive oil. When it is hot, add in chopped onion and sauté until they turn golden. Add 2 tbsp of flour, the pepper, and a clove of garlic. Once everything has turned a golden colour, add a 1/2 cup of water,white wine and the tomato paste. Add 3 slices of lemon and season well, Cook for 2-3 minutes more. Pour the onion mixture into the saucepan with the clams. Cook on low until the sauce thickens, stirring often for about 4 minutes. When cooked add your parsley and serve in bowls and serve hot. On Sunday 27th March 2016, at 2am clocks are advanced an hour, springing forward into Summer Time over the Easter holidays. Luckily, most mobiles and other devices automatically make this change; although it does risk people missing the odd clock around the house still needing a personal touch. Daylight saving was first introduced during World War One by Germany and Austria, and then by the Allies, to save on coal; but it did not come into wider use until the 1970s, because of the energy crisis. Arguments still rage over the economic or health benefits it brings, with those in favour saying that it saves energy, reduces traffic accidents and crime, and is good for businesses. However, those against say that it’s not clear if any energy savings are made, while there are also potential health risks.

Citroen Berlingo Multispace DRIVING THE Citroen Berlingo Multispace reignites memories for me of 1977 – 1984 and the first leisure vehicle inspired by Range Rover - its similar, if taller than the Rancho. The Pope-mobile inspired design is not my typical choice of transport. However, it is a true multipurpose vehicle ideal for taking my wife, her parents and our baby daughter on a family trip to London.

The sliding rear doors are easy to operate, great for car parks where there’s never enough room to open a normal car door properly – useful when strapping Harriett into her baby seat. The boot makes light work of luggage and there are plenty of cubby holes, with helpful overhead storage above the boot - see the video at testdrives.biz: the boot cover can be lifted from inside. There’s a high driving position. While at first the seats seem pretty comfortable, over a long journey they could be more supportive. The interior is spacious and snazzy and the dashboard is user-friendly and funky: copious amounts of glass ensure plenty of light and air. The handbrake is a bit close to the driver’s seat for comfort but you get used to it. Its gutsy 1.6litre, 90bhp diesel can cover over 600 miles with its 60 litre tank. The five-speed box is perfectly adequate but a sixth gear might further improve economy. Rear passengers have roof mounted air vents and fan control and air conditioning creates a pleasant climate. The Berlingo Multispace is surprisingly

compact considering the room inside. A mammoth tailgate makes great shelter from the rain. However, the driver has to remember to leave space behind him in order to access the boot. Driving - a little remote and cumbersome, with vision impeded by the centre pillar, so extra care is required when overtaking. No cruise control for motorway travelling; and if fifth gear is engaged at 30mph the vehicle shudders, resulting in a rattle from the dash. Car expert Parkers say: “Spacious, practical and brimming with family-friendly features, the Berlingo Multispace is a fiveseat people carrier for buyers on a budget. It sits between the cheaper Xsara Picasso and stylish C4 Picasso in the Citroen range but, unlike its predecessor, is no longer based on a van. Instead it uses car underpinnings, is comfortable and surprisingly good to drive as a result.” Similar to variants from both Fiat and Peugeot, also unconventionally styled, these vehicles are popular with families but the Citroen is particularly so due to its incredibly well-designed interior, keen price and strong economy. This, combined with their recent win over Albacete, puts them in contention for the 1st Division’s number one spot. The club’s 2nd team played Squalos, and lost 13-15, as Squalos played a much better second half, and look like emerging at the top of Division 2:

The championship iwas not strictly competitive, so there was no official classification, aiming, rather, for all participants to enjoy themselves and show their progress. As well as the hosts, Cartagena University Rugby Club, teams from C.R Totana, Murcia XV, CURM, Torrevieja, ITV Vega Baja and Las Torres de Cotillas, took part, with medals for all participants, and trophies for each club.

The course had been aerated in many parts of the fairways, and round the greens, which made putting from off the green very difficult. The main results were: in Division 1, 1st, Roger Brown with 40 points playing off 16.4, 2nd, Malcolm Wise with 38 points playing off 6.3, 3rd, Terry Oram with 37 points playing off 17.3, and 4th, Celia Cronin with 37 points playing off 12.5. In Division 2, 1st, Rob Westlands with 37 points playing off 21.4, 2nd, Jim Gillies with 34 points playing off 18.8, 3rd, Jan Baker with 33 points playing off 26.8, and 4th, Peter Brown with 32 points playing off 29.7. The player of the day was undoubtedly Roger Brown with 40 points. There were five 2’s, Stella Fox, Barry Levett, Paul Trigwell, Colin Foster and Roger Brown. The “Balls in the Water” prize was not won, so became a roll-over. Nearest the hole, at Hole 5, was Steve Crossan, and, at hole 16, Colin Foster. Match-play results were: Ian Robertson beat Roger Miller 5/4, David O’Connor beat Peter Rapley 4/3, and Brian Bardon beat Danny Herron 2/1.
