White Warrior by JACK TROUGHTON

TEENAGER CAIN Kiernan is on top of the world after winning a silver medal at the World Kickboxing Championships in Bangkok. The 19-year-old’s performances in front of thousands of fans in the Thai capital earned him the nickname ‘The White Warrior’ – or Nook Soo Kow – after the film starring tough guy Jean-Claude Van Damme.

BANNER HEADLINES in the UK press screamed ‘expat exodus’ this week and boldly stated 100 British citizens were leaving Spain every day because of fears of the UK quitting the EU.

Closer inspection revealed rather a lot of ‘ifs and ands’ linked to a ‘leave’ result in the June referendum but they did underline the understandable worries of the expat population here in Spain and across Europe – pensions, healthcare, education, just three of the areas outlined by colleagues back in Blighty. And phones were soon ringing at RTN Towers. My old mate Jon Gaunt, the outspoken and frequently controversial radio presenter, wanted to know the word along the Costas ands so your humble servant was booked for a guest slot on Talk2Me Radio. Gaunty admits to backing the ‘out’ camp but as a champion of free speech was interested in how the speculation and scaremongering was beginning to add to the whole uncertainty felt by expats; and was extremely sceptical about the numbers fleeing to the UK. We even agreed that a vote to leave the EU would not result in umpires holding up a finger to signal instant dismissal – rather there would be years of negotiations. Jon also threw in a view of his own; he believes those who took advantage of free movement within Europe have been badly let down by both sides. Camper clampdown by RHIANNAN BELL

MADRID HAS ordered a clampdown on freeloading camper cans and motor homes on coastal routes along the Costa Blanca. Torrevieja Town Hall has been asked by central government to take actions to control people parking their vehicles along the coast at La Mata. The coastal department insists it is a public domain, and the Coastal Act prevents its use for the parking and camping of these types of vehicle. And the department has requested signs prohibiting parking must be installed and an information campaign launched to warn visitors about possible sanctions that could be imposed by illegal parking. Some of most popular stopping areas for motor homes are La Mata to the north of Torrevieja and the borders of Guardamar, and near the Molino del Agua. The beaches of Los Locos and Luz Mar are also seen as problem areas. Users are mostly retired people who find the Costa Blanca one of the best places to spend the winter and so far no one has informed them of the problems they can cause by shunning caravan parks for a free coastal location.

MEDIEVAL MARKET SHELVED ORIHUELA TOWN Hall has postponed this month’s Medieval Market for “technical reasons” following meetings with the organisers.

The event was scheduled to go ahead over the weekend of 8th, 9th and 10th of April but new dates are under discussion to allow it to go ahead “under optimum conditions”. A local authority spokesman for the Department said the council wanted “to insure the celebration of a Medieval Market that provided prestige and distinction to Orihuela; as the government team has shown with successful events in recent months.”

#AdiosGary

by JACK TROUGHTON

VALENCIA PARTED company with novice manager Gary Neville on Wednesday with the former Manchester United and England legend shown the door after less than four months at the helm. The announcement was almost a big a surprise as his appointment last December and the 40-year-old will feel he should have been given more time but results went against him. Valencia picked up just 14 points from his 16 games in charge. The latest match was a 2-0 defeat at home to Celta Vigo before the international break, taking Valencia to just six points above the relegation zone in Spain’s La Liga. The club did reach the semi-final stage of the Cope del Rey, offering the novice manager some hope, but suffered a 7-0 drubbing away at Barcelona; later described as the club’s darkest day in its history. And Valencia also dropped out of the Europa League after losing narrowly to La Liga rivals Athletico Bilbao in the last 16 – whose vital away goal was scored after a clear handball

was overlooked. Gary will feel luck deserted him. Valencia was hampered by missed chances, injuries, red cards, and disallowed goals during his brief spell in charge, supported by brother Phil. The language barrier remained a problem throughout and not just in the dressing room. Despite his daily Spanish lessons, Gary was misquoted on television but not before his comments upset fans. Difficulties in expressing himself were also said to lead to tactical uncertainty. Gary wanted to play with intensity, pressing high up the pitch and creating attacking width to bombard the box with crosses. Sadly, this exciting brand of football was only occasionally seen; while the manager was forced to constantly change the side and his tactics after nearly every game. Gary enjoyed a hero’s welcome at Valencia but the honeymoon was soon over. After the Barcelona humiliation, supporters wanted his blood. No doubt the novice manager will chalk it all down to experience.

BARCELONA GOES VEGETARIAN by

CAROLINE TYSZKA

THE CITY of Barcelona has announced that it is a “vegan and vegetarian friendly” city.

Left-wing city councillors in Barcelona have detailed plans that are aimed at supporting vegan and vegetarian diets in the city. Shops and restaurants that sell meat-free produce will feature in a special guide, and schools will be encouraged to follow Sir Paul McCartney’s late wife’s “meat free Monday” campaign. The PP and Ciudadanos parties are more sceptical about the idea, implying that it would not only have a detrimental effect on cattle farmers but could also lead to vitamin deficiencies.

And his courage and skill in the ring also meant he received an invitation to represent four martial arts gyms when he next travels to the Far East. And now back on the Costa Blanca, Cain has been honoured by his club Mauy Thai Xabia and presented with a huge silver trophy to go with his medal. He represented Spain in the competition after winning a national title last November – amazingly he has only been fighting for three years – and the tournament attracted sportsmen from 52 countries across the globe. “The whole thing was really good fun. It was not stressful at all but a really good experience,” he told RTN. “I was matched against a professional fighter in the final and he won on points that’s really unusual in kickboxing…it’s quite rare to go to a point’s decision. CAGE “It was a little weird because he was a 26-year-old professional cage fighter, a mixed martial arts fighter from Libya, and it was supposed to be an amateur competition.” Cain fought in the under 80kg classification – weighing 77kg, he decided not to diet to make the 75kg category – and said the whole competition was extremely well organised. The Spanish group – six fighters in a party of 11 – was away for 11 days and flew from Malaga to Bangkok via Moscow, staying in the plush Twin Towers Hotel in Thailand. And the competition was staged in the MBK Shopping Centre, said to be the biggest mall in Asia. “There were massive crowds watching throughout the tournament – it was absolutely mental; the sport has a massive following in Thailand.” He added: “Two of the fights were the hardest I have ever had. However, one of the guys I was supposed to meet in the ring was stopped because he failed a dope test. How can you believe you will not be tested? You have to be really dumb. “And when I was fighting the Thais were going nuts. After the final I was called Nook Soo Kow, the White Warrior, after the kickboxing film with Jean-Claude Van Damme.” SHOPPING There was also time for every visitor’s favourite pastime in Thailand, a bit of shopping. Cain, like most westerners, found prices extremely cheap. “”I went with nothing and just filled my suitcase – I was actually debating getting a bigger case. I bought loads of training equipment, clothes and souvenirs,” he said. “As soon as I got there I found the biggest Mauy Thai shop and bought loads of equipment. It was half price and everything was handmade – gloves, shin pads and kick pads.” Another highlight was Thai food. “It was absolutely awesome, just amazing. I ate everything, including a scorpion but I couldn’t face the maggots.” By the end of the trip he said everyone wanted “normal food” and the last supper was Australian steak, eggs and sausages. “I am now saving to go back after summer. I hope to fight there again and take up the offers of the gym masters.”

Valencia lifts international cup

YOU G FOO YOUNG FOOTBALLERS from La Liga giants Valencia outfoxed English Premiership’s Leicester C City team to win the first international tournament ‘MiBalon’ in Teulada-Moraira. T Valencia won the final 6-1, although runners-up Leicester had drawn 1-1 with the Spanish side in the group stages of the competition and both went into the semi-finals unbeaten. More than 200 young players spent four days on the Costa Blanca and the 10 clubs involved helped make the in invitation competition a great success. Valencia side Levante won third place after beating Nastic al Tarragon into fourth place. Teulada’s Ricardo Benavent Stadium was visited by 1,000 spectators over the competition – and helped raise 2,000€ for chari charities the Down’s Syndrome Association of Alicante and ‘Asindown’.

When sparks fly

by RHIANNAN BELL

ELECTRICITY GIANT Iberdrola and Alicante’s Provincial Fire Service have teamed up to provide specialist training for emergencies at electrical installations. The training exercises in Orihuela, Torrevieja and Almoradi, will help firefighters analyse risks and take the preventative measures needed when extinguishing fires. The aim is to arm firemen with the necessary expertise at electrical installations where the risk of serious injury can increase substantially. Electrical technicians discussed the different types of infrastructure within the electricity sector including information of transmission lines, voltage and substation layouts. To complete the training and implement some of the knowledge taught, medium voltage installations were visited where firefighters were able to get acquainted first hand with the different types of lines and transformers. All those involved were satisfied the training and experience would be constructive in their field of work.

BLOOD FLOWS AS PEOPLE DONATE

RESIDENTS OF Orihuela have again shown their support for Spain’s blood donation scheme and made donations.

Historically, the area always responds well to requests for blood and this was again demonstrated last weekend when despite being the Easter holidays, long queues formed at the transfusion centre at the senior Centre of Virgen de Monserrate. Doctors were present and responsible for checking the health of each donor as there are certain conditions which dictate whether someone is suitable. Generally, hospitals require about 250 bags of blood to be able to function and provide adequate care. This rises during peak holiday periods and in popular tourist resorts where there is an increase in the traffic and blood is needed for road accident victims.

Winter fuel row flares up

by JACK TROUGHTON

NEW SECRETARY of State for Works and Pensions Stephen Crabb can expect a full post bag from expats angry at losing the Winter Fuel Allowance. Campaigners across Europe are urging pensioners to bombard the politician with letters demanding he overturn the Statutory Instrument used by the UK government the end the benefit last September. Mr Crabb takes over the helm from Iain Duncan Smith who axed winter fuel payments to expats living in Spain, France, Cyprus, Portugal, Greece and Malta – using a controversial temperature test. His predecessor resigned following Budget plans , now scrapped, to slash benefits to disabled people, although many commentators believe Mr Duncan Smith left his post as a supporter of ‘Brexit’ and an opponent of the government’s policy of remaining within the EU. But when in charge of the Department for Works and Pensions (DWP), Mr Duncan Smith pushed forward a number of benefit cuts, including the divisive policy of which expats could claim the benefit; and despite saying: “Winter fuel payments exist to help Britain’s pensioners keep themselves warm.” He believed it was “absurd and offensive” taxpayers funded the payment for people retired to the Mediterranean and enjoying warmer weather; despite evidence European countries can be hit by extreme cold. Over the winter 2013-14, paying the benefit to expats cost £22 million, more than £8.7 million going to pensioners in

Spain. The new rules slashed the total because the countries ousted by the IDS test have the most British pensioners. LETTER Roger Boaden MBE and Brian Cave, both leading lights in the Votes for Expat Brits campaign, have composed a letter they hope will be taken up by all expats and sent directly to new DWP chief Mr Crabb. And they give a postal address for the Secretary of State as they fear there is no email address that will reach the politician “unfiltered” by assistants at the DWP. Brian said: “You may wish to write yourselves along the following lines, by post to the address below. But feel free to compose your own thoughts, which

could well use ideas from our letter.” Their letter reads: “Dear Mr Crabb, Congratulations on your appointment. You will have received information about the consequent effect of the SI 3270 on a number of elderly British citizens residing in other EU States. “You are urged to rescind this statutory instrument. It is not an appropriately fair method of reducing costs. Perhaps there are other methods available such as incorporating the winter fuel payment into the State pension so that it becomes taxable.” People are asked to sign the letter and send it to: The Rt. Hon. Stephen Crabb, Secretary of State for Works and Pensions, Caxton House, Tothill Street, London, SW1 9DA, Great Britain.

The body of a decomposed dolphin has been discovered within the grounds of a stately home in Madrid, although the city is at least a three hour drive to the ocean. A local man had been walking his dog when he was alerted to the dolphin, as his pet could smell the decomposing body. Whilst a zoo is near the location, police do not believe that it could have come from there, as no animals had been reported as missing. The city’s Animal Protection Centre was due to carry out a post-mortem- to see if any light could be shed on how a dolphin could be so far from the sea.

Property figures released

Airport thieves by Rhiannan Bell

CLEANERS AT Alicante-Elche Airport are believed to be behind the theft of lost and forgotten valuables from passenger aircraft. A Guardia Civil investigation was launched after an increase in the number of complaints from passengers their property was missing and failed to appear at the terminal’s lost property office. Items such as handbags, computer devices, phones, tablets

and other property were allegedly stolen by a small group of aircraft cleaners. Detectives discovered in many cases, the loss was reported soon after landing which helped them identify a gang of four – three women and a man – involved in cleaning aircraft where property had gone missing. And officers have found evidence the thefts have taken place over the last five years, although it is believe the gang had

FIGURES HAVE been released by the Ministry of Public Works showing construction is on the rise and repossessions are falling in Spain. Building licences approved last year were up by 42.5%, whilst the number of repossessions by banks fell by 13%. And 49,695 construction plans were approved in 2015, of which 14,651 were for family homes. This has led to an increase of 4.7% in employment for the industry. Meanwhile, banks repossessed fewer houses in 2015 than in 2014, with a total of 30,335 homes seeing evictions. It is not known if this means improved financial conditions for those involved, or if banks are offering a helping hand to their customers.

been in action for much longer. No criminal charges have yet been brought against the suspects but the case has been referred to the courts at Elche regarding the continual offence of misappropriation. It is feared further detailed charges will be difficult to bring against individuals. This is because passenger complaints were only filed at the airport and there is a lack of victims lodging details of their losses direct to the Guardia Civil at the time of the thefts.

UK follows Lynx programme by CAROLINE TYSZKA

THE LYNX UK Trust is hoping to reintroduce the Iberian cat into the British countryside, following a similar programme in Spain. Historically, Iberian lynx lived in Portugal and Spain, but numbers fell drastically when their natural forest areas were destroyed. A successful programme, which began just over 15 years ago, has seen figures rise, within Toledo, south western Spain and southern Portugal, to approximately 400 cats, where, in 2002 numbers were around 100. It has been over 1,000 years since the lynx has been able to roam in the English countryside, as Dr Paul O’Donoghue, adviser to the International Union for Conservation of Nature cat specialist group, explained.

He said: “It is incredibly exciting. The project in Spain has been so successful that we hope to emulate it here in the UK.” The group is applying for licences to release the cats, brought over from Romania, in unfenced areas in Cumbria, Norfolk, Northumberland, Arygll and Aberdeenshire, for a five year trial period. The Iberian breed is smaller than European lynxes, and not considered dangerous to humans, but farmers have already expressed concerns that the cats could pose a threat to their livestock. Lynx commonly like to eat wild animals such as rabbits, but, during the winter months, when rabbit populations are low, they will switch their prey base to red deer, fallow deer, and ducks.

SURVIVOR TURTLE RELEASED BACK INTO THE WILD A TURTLE, which became famous in the UK for being rescued in Jersey, has been released back into the wild. Fondly known as “Terry the British turtle”, he was found in February suffering from serious hypothermia, believed to be the only survivor of a group of turtles caught in a fishing net off the Channel Island coast. He then became the subject of a BBC programme, and a charity ‘crowdfunding’ campaign to raise 15,000€ for his treatment and subsequent release. The appeal hit the headlines when Bruce Dickinson, from the heavy metal band Iron Maiden, offered to lend his private jet to transport Terry back to Gran Canaria. Hundreds of residents and tourists gathered at the Playa del Inglés, in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, to see him being released back into the wild. Whilst in captivity, Terry was tagged, so that his progress through the seas can be followed.

Ronnie Corbett dies aged 85

Flu Death in Alicante

COMEDY LEGEND Ronnie Corbett has died with his wife and two daughters at his bedside; it was announced yesterday (Thursday).

By RHIANNAN BELL A 40-YEAR-OLD man has died in Alicante´s San Juan Hospital after spending several days in the intensive care unit with severe symptoms of flu.

Best known for his appearances with Ronnie Barker as ‘The Two Ronnies’ in the hit programme during the 1970s and 1980s, his career spanned both radio and television and included sketch show ‘The Frost Report’, sitcom ´Sorry!´’, and game show ´Small Talk’. Most recently he appeared in Radio 4 sitcom ´When the Dog Dies’. On Thursday, his publicist released the following statement: “Ronnie Corbett CBE, one of the nation’s best-loved entertainers passed away this morning, surrounded by his loving family. They have asked that their privacy is respected at this time.” The comedian suffered gall bladder problems in 2014 but was back on his feet after a week and said to be back “enjoying life and work”. Ronnie will be best remembered for the classic sketches he performed as a double act – Ronnie Barker died in 2005 – as well as the monologues delivered from a large armchair. The pair’s ‘Four Candles’ routine remains one of Britain’s favourite television moments. And speaking of his place in the hearts of British people, he said in 2013: “I do find the ‘national treasure’ thing very touching. Actually, it brings a tear to my eye when people call me that.” In recent times he split his time between homes in Croydon and Gullane, East Lothian, close to a number of golf courses. Ronnie, born in Edinburgh, was famous for his love of the sport. He is survived by his wife, Anne Hart – they celebrated this golden wedding anniversary last year – and their two daughters, actresses Emma and Sophie Corbett.

Hospital sources explained that the man was suffering from influenza A, exasperated by bronchopneumonia. However, the actual cause of death will be determined by a post mortem examination. Doctors said the characteristics of flu sufferers this year was different to previous years as they had seen an increase in the number of younger people suffering from more severe symptoms. This is unusual as normally only the very young and elderly develop more problematic effects of the virus. The number of recorded instances has now peaked across the Valencia region, according to an official bulletin, with 391.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, 31.5% more than the previous week, and the

highest number so far this year. Cases of flu are particularly high across Valencia, whereas the current status of the rest of the country is medium to low, and localised and sporadic in locations such as Andalusia, Ceuta, the Canary Islands and Melilla. Since the beginning of this year´s flu season there have been a reported 177 deaths in Spain, 96% from influenza A.

Helicopter drug runners by CAROLINE TYSZKA

GUARDIA CIVIL officers have arrested a number of people using helicopters to smuggle hashish into Spain. Named ‘Operation Griva’, officers arrested 20 people across Spain and seized 1,500 kilograms of hashish. The drug ring, used the aircraft to travel between Morocco and mainland Spain, would remove the rotor blades when not in use to hide the choppers in the back of trailers to avoid detection. One of the pilots arrested was already serving a prison sentence, but was out on weekend release when captured. The 20 people arrested were of Spanish, Moroccan, Romanian and Ecuadorian na-

tionalities and 14 properties associated with them were also searched. Raids took place in Madrid, San Sebastián, Estepona, Algeciras and Palacios-Villafranca and officers seized two helicopters, 15 vehicles, 1,500 kilos of hashish, a marijuana plantation with 1000 plants and 220,000€ in cash. The Guardia was alerted to the illegal activities when one landing in Estepona was noticed. Officers mounted a surveillance operation and witnessed the helicopters loading and unloading. The Spanish network was allegedly run by a Moroccan resident in Estepona, who purchased the two helicopters and hired the pilots.

CHILD LEFT IN CAR OVERNIGHT A FATHER is facing a custody battle after he left his daughter in a car to sleep overnight whilst he was out drinking.

The father of a seven-year-old girl is accused of planning to spend the night drinking in a Spanish pub, leaving his daughter alone in a car in Calle Sondalezas in Nueva Málaga. When the child awoke, she got out and crossed three lanes of traffic in search of her 31-year-old father at, 4.30am. As she left the car the vehicle alarm sounded but failed to alert her dad. Luckily, a young man witnessed the events and called the police, who found the wayward parent in the locked-up bar, and called the child protection unit. The father was found, still drinking with a group of friends, and oblivious to his daughter’s plight, claimed he had only been in the premises for ten minutes to collect some papers. However, others drinking in the bar allegedly told police the parent been drinking since around 2am. He was arrested, and charged with the temporary abandonment of a minor, and his daughter was returned to her mother, currently separated from the father.

How to negotiate roundabouts IF YOU are unsure about the correct way to negotiate roundabouts, here are some simple rules to help you enter and exit roundabouts safely and in the right lane. APPROACHING ROUNDABOUTS It’s important to remember to give way to traffic already on the roundabout. If the roundabout is outside urban areas of towns or cities, keep right. If the roundabout is in a built-up area inside a town or city and the lanes are clearly marked, you should use the lane that best corresponds to the exit you need to take. LEAVING ROUNDABOUTS This causes the most confusion amongst drivers. Which lane to choose? Why do I get beeped at if I’m in the right lane? Drivers must exit roundabouts from the right hand lane, because the only way to leave the roundabout is by turning right. This doesn’t mean we always have to enter the roundabout from the right hand lane. It depends on the exit we need to take. However this simple rule, in practice, can be more complex. Let us see some examples. 1st EXIT RIGHT Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate and exit roundabout. CONTINUING STRAIGHT ON (e.g. 2nd EXIT STRAIGHT AHEAD) Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate prior to exit and leave roundabout. TURNING LEFT OR CHANGING DIRECTION (e.g. 3rd OR FINAL EXIT) Enter roundabout keeping to left hand side lane. Stay in lane until you have passed the exit before your turn off, then change lane by indicating right and giving other road users sufficient time to anticipate your manoeuvre. Don’t forget that drivers circulating in the outside lanes have priority, so use your mirrors to ensure you are not blocking them as you change lanes. Call for new health centre by RHIANNAN BELL

THE GRAN Alicant community could get a second health centre following meetings this week between local and regional politicians. Pressure at all local authority levels has resulted in the regional health authority acknowledging there is a need for a centre – first outlined as a project in 2009. Santa Pola Councillor for Health Loli Tomas believes given growth across the area in recent years, the current facilities were inadequate to meet the needs of the population and she said the “urgency” of the plan had been underlined. And a spokesman added: “The new government team has to start once again with the project from scratch. “Back in 2009, the city council conducted the drafting of a project for the construction of a new health centre for Gran Alacant, but it was never presented to the Ministry.” The council has already designated municipal land for the construction of the site, near to the Monte Faro, where a second school is also planned.

Damage estimated at over 3,000€ was caused at the old hemp factory known as ‘La Porcha’ in Callosa de Segura. The town hall, which has seen recent improvements destroyed in the attack, has ordered an increased police presence to deter further incidents at the onetime hemp spinning mill. Mayor Francisco Maciá said there were people “who do not want this place refur-

bished” and claimed an estimated a gang of 20 people was involved in the destruction. Billboards were thrown on the floor; while walls, metal mesh, and even concrete were destroyed. The project – which provided a valued job workshop - began in February and the goal is for the building to become another part of a catalogue of areas protected in Callosa. A second employment workshop will now again attempt to refurbish a property left to deteriorate in recent years after numerous acts of vandalism. It is hoped that the factory will eventually be open to the public for cultural visits.

Road safety success Thieves arrested by RHIANNAN BELL

YOUNGSTERS UNDER six have an early opportunity to grasp the basic rules of road safety at Elche Children’s Traffic Park.

The city council is promoting ‘family cycling’ at the facility which previously was only open to schoolchildren aged six to 16. Adults – parents, grandparents, or older siblings – must accompany youngsters but can enjoy safe quality time while the kids learn elementary traffic rules, signals and sign. Helmets are mandatory and bikes

can be borrowed at the park or cyclists can take their own. Family cycling at the park has been in successfully running for several weeks after it was opened on Sundays and holidays between 12.30pm and 1.30pm. The council is keen to promote cycling and pedal power and has found the scheme has proved to be very popular – over Easter and until Monday 4th April, opening hours were extended to meet demand and run daily between 9.30am and 1.30pm.

THREE MEN have been arrested by Civil Guard officers in Santa Pola suspected of being involved in a series of crimes in the area. The three Spanish men, aged 20, 35, and 52, were held after being linked to the theft of a 4,000€ bicycle from the premises of a local shop owner – a similar machine was discovered for sale via a mobile application. The person offering the bike for sale claimed he was selling it for a third party but officers showed pictures of the three suspects to the shop owner who identified one man as the bike thief. And investigations continue into a number of outstanding offences the three men could be involved with in the area.

YELLOW LEGGED GULLS - A THREAT TO WILDLIFE! CARTAGENA PORT Authority is controlling the spread of yellow-legged gulls on the island of Escombreras, near the oil refinery to the east of the harbour. Since 2007, they have been controlling the breeding of this species, which is listed as ‘not under threat’, to avoid its threat t the survival of other species. The annual task has been brought forward this year to help protect the nesting of species under threat, such as the shag and the peregrine falcon. Other endangered species, such as the Audouin’s gull, and Cory’s shearwater, are also to be found on the island.

Why you should start investing and the three golden rules to make it work Want to beat the pathetic interest paid out on many high street accounts - and turbo-charge your money for the future? Then it’s time to dip your toe into the stock market. You’ll be swapping the relative safety of an ordinary savings account for the stock markets — and to the novice investor this can seem fraught with danger. But it doesn’t need to be.

Don’t forget to spread your risk

Generally, investing means using your money to back something which you think will give you a profit. Most simply, this means putting your money into shares issued by companies that are listed on the stock market. But with all investing there is a risk. It is for this reason that buying shares in just one company can be risky. That’s why many investors tend to hold shares with investment funds. These put your cash into a basket of companies, thereby spreading the chances of share price rises and falls. Funds can also be used to buy into other assets, such as bonds, property or commodities.

What is your prime target?

Before you start, you need to ask yourself why you want to invest. Is it a rainy day reserve? Or are you hoping to build up a pot of money to supplement your income in retirement? The answers will help you figure out where to put your money - not least because you’ll know how long it will be invested for. As a rule of thumb, the longer you can keep your money tied up, the more risk you can afford to take. If you suffer steep or sudden price falls, being invested for longer means you give your cash a greater chance of recovery. And taking more of a gamble also means you have the chance of bigger profits.

Don’t be over-zealous

Take it steady to start with and don’t be tempted to tinker all the time. If you’re over-zealous, this could lead to you panic-selling your funds if they’re not doing that well in the short-term. If this all seems a little daunting to deal with on your own, then help is at hand. If you would like to have a chat about how to make your money work harder, then give me a call on 965 704 338 or send an email to: Contact@seagateWealth.es

Drivers caught over drugs by RHIANNAN BELL

LOCAL POLICE practicing drug screening tests in a Costa Blanca town snared drivers suspected of being under the influence of illicit substances. Officers in Pilar de la Horadada spent two days on a practical training exercise following a specialist lectures over drugs. And seven of the tests completed at the roadside returned positive results and have been sent to a laboratory to identify the substances involved. The Department of Public Safety took the officers in mobile units and drivers were stopped and a test requested from the person behind the wheel. Earlier, 13 officers from Pilar de la Horadada joined police colleagues for a 30-hour training course in drug detection. The training programme was taught by professors associated with the Valencian Institute of Public Safety and Emergency (IVASPE), a policeman, a prosecutor and a psychologist. The training included advice in detecting drug use in drivers and also taught safe measures in which salivary indication tests could be taken when illegal drugs were thought to have been taken.

Pig round-up problems

EFFORTS TO round-up the colony of 150 Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs in the Cartagena suburb of Los Mateos have hit a snag – a number of the pigs have scabies, also known as mange. “This outbreak of scabies has become a public health problem, which is why we have to act immediately”, said Cartagena Councillor, Francisco Calderón, whose responsibility is Health and Environment. The Department of Health is now rounding up the pigs, and taking them to a reservation in Corvera, between Cartagena and Murcia, where their future will be decided.

CANCER SCREENING RESIDENTS OF Santa Pola who are aged between 50 and 69 and registered with the local health authority will soon be receiving letters encouraging them to participate in a screening programme for colon and rectal cancer. Antonia Soriano, responsible for public health in the area, explained how a simple test can detect potential cases, ulcers and other associated symptoms in the these areas of the body. The screening campaign was first launched in the Santa Pola area in 2014, but there was only “very low” participation, said Ms Soriano. It is hoped this time the figure will be much higher, and that everybody contacted will attend for the test. And for those people whose symptoms are found early enough, a monitoring and treatment plan can be offered to help prevent disease spreading. To find more information, contact staff in the department of health office within the Civic Centre.

Mixed Easter blessing by Ian Askew

SEMANA SANTA may have filled Cartagena’s hotels, but the bars, taxis and shops failed to improve on last Easter´s trading figures. The general feeling remains positive, as the weather was good at the holiday weekend and the spectacular processions attracted huge crowds. The big winners were the hotel owners with visitors from Madrid, Cataluña, Valencia, Andalucía and Castilla La Mancha filling their establishments for much of the week and over the Easter weekend, from Good Friday to Easter Sunday they reached 93% occupancy, a figure that is seen only a very few times in the year. Over the ten days, the average occupancy stood at 56%, according to the president of the Association of Hotels and Tourist Accommodation for Cartagena and its region, Juan Carlos García. The increase was about 10%. From Good Friday to Easter Sunday, bars along the procession routes were full to bursting at noon and as each procession went past. However, during the last couple of years, the number of bars has increased, each wanting their own share of the profits to be made.

Fatal collision

A MAN died and three people were seriously injured in a fatal collision on the CV859 road between San Fulgencio and Guardamar del Segura on Easter Monday. Two cars were thought to have collided head on at around 2pm on a straight stretch of road in conditions offering good visibility. The force of the impact caused one vehicle to roll several times. The cause of the accident is still being investigated but it was suggested the fatal crash – which also left two other men and a woman with injuries – occurred when one driver crossed into the oncoming lane.

Is Your Car Insured? I cannot believe that we are at the end of March and Easter has come and gone. Soon we will be complaining of the heat once again and, with global warming, I am really not looking forward to it. Life in the insurance business becomes harder and harder every day, mainly due to mis-selling and some people wanting to believe everything they are told. The banks especially are of great concern to me and others. Due to a small surge in house selling, they are now able to offer mortgages and loans once more and they are using the same old tactics of persuasion, that clients must take their insurances with the bank to be eligible for the loans. To make it look more attractive, they offer a discount (joke) on the costs when they go ahead with the insurance. The trouble here is that they are not an insurance company but a bank. It takes special knowledge to sell insurance and especially house insurance. Recently, a couple arrived from the UK and went to the bank for a mortgage. They were offered a special discount if they took the house insurance with the bank. I am sure the clients felt that this was quite normal but may also have felt intimidated and went ahead with the insurance. Sadly, they were then burgled and lost everything, including expensive jewellery. As the policy was sold incorrectly and they were not asked any specifics, obviously regarding all risks cover or security measures, when they went to report the claim they were told they were not covered and had not been insured properly, so were unable to claim for anything. Unfortunately, they had signed the insurance document without checking thoroughly and it would have been in Spanish anyway. Again it comes back to intimidation and never believing

that a bank would sell incorrectly. My sound advice is - do not take your insurance with a bank – always go to a specialist because, in the end, there is no such thing as a bargain insurance. Always, always check your policies and please do not be persuaded to go with a policy that is in Spanish, when there are policies in English available. At the same time, do yourself a favour and go with an ex-pat policy which has been designed and priced specifically for the ex-pat market, with English speaking backup and support available. I was horrified to discover the banks are now offering health insurance. This type of insurance is highly specialised and it would be very dangerous to go ahead with a plan where you could be left in the wilderness due to the lack of correct personal medical information, which could leave you without full cover. Do not do it! Once again, please approach an ex pat expert company for your health needs as it is specially designed for our needs in Spain. My company has a full time administrator to help you when you need advice and appointments. With the advent of more thorough computerisation, Spain has recently decided to cross check the information from Direction General de Trafico records with the FIVA list of insured vehicles. This has been carried out in the UK for several years and it is to prevent any registered vehicle being without insurance. All vehicles registered without insurance will receive from Trafico a letter informing them of their lack of insurance, and for them to resolve the situation as soon as possible. Otherwise, they could receive a fine of €1500. At the same time, speed cameras will also be checking number plates as they estimate that

there are over 2 million cars in Spain without insurance. This, of course, effects your premiums and what a nightmare if you try and claim and discover that the other car is not insured. This Trafico campaign started in February and will continue. Fines will also be applied to vehicles off the road for any reason, that have not been officially baja’d and it makes no difference if the laid up vehicles are on public or private land. The law in Spain is that all vehicles must be insured at all times. My Renewals Department is continually advising people of this law and still amazed when some clients chose to ignore it and inform my staff that they are not bothered. For those of you who are unaware, Spanish law has recently changed with regard to cancelling your policies. You no longer need to provide two months’ notice of cancellation of any policy. Can I suggest that you read your policy and if you are concerned about your cover, be wise and call one of my offices to check your coverage. If you are thinking of cancelling, diarise the date at least six weeks before renewal date, and contact one of my offices where you will get an honest and informative quotation with policy documents in English and with a bonus of a very efficient claims service carried out by Javea Head Office. Then cancel your old policy and do not be persuaded by price cuts. These lower prices should have been offered in the first instance and you will discover that the policy becomes far more expensive the following year, whilst ours will not. P.S. Liberty Seguros are offering € 50 cashback (conditions apply) on new policies.

Safe bathing at Mar Menor by Ian Askew

THE MAR Menor is to have a safe bathing beach for people with disabilities thanks to European Union money. European aid of 32,600€ will fund the creation of a bathing area accessible for people with disabilities, including those with mental illness. This pioneering project for Spain is an initiative launched by Cartagena City Council and the Cartagena Association for Community Integration of the Mentally Ill (Apices). The idea came from the Municipal Institute of Coastal Ser-

vices (Imsel), following the success of a similar project in the city of Rimini, northern Italy. “This initiative aims to link associations and local government to study the adaptability of spaces, such as beaches, for people with a mental disorder,” explained Cartagena’s deputy mayor, Ana Belén Castejón. According to municipal sources, one of the most suitable places for the Cartagena initiative is the Playa Honda beach, at the southern end of the Mar Menor, because of its size, and because it is already adapted for people with mobility difficulties.

Murcia traffic gridlock 30 KILOMETRES of traffic jams blocked access to the city of Murcia all day on Monday as the return to work after the Easter coupled with a holiday in Valencia and Cataluña, caused to be swamped motorways. The A-30 and A-7 were in gridlock, blocking access to the city from Andalucía and from Valencia. As motorists know only too well, there is no motorway route around the city of Murcia, as the two main motorway routes, Alicante to Andalucía (A-7) and Madridto Cartagena (A-30) pass through the centre of the city. The junction between the A-30 and the A-7, known as the ‘Espinardo knot’, once again become a trap for thousands of desperate drivers as over 350,000 vehicles tried to go through the capital. Problems started in the morning, and, by noon, the A30 had several kilometres of tailbacks in the Albacete direction and the A-7 saw ten kilometres of tailbacks towards Alicante, and the situation did not improve throughout the day. The DGT (Tráfico) website showed, at 4pm, that conditions on the A-30 were “difficult” and that the A-7 was “passable, but with care.”

News from afar No escaping red tape SHOCKED MUSICIAN and DJ James Meyers was arrested for failing to return a VHS tape 14 years after renting the movie. The 37-year-old American was stopped by police on the school run because of a broken brake light – and officers discovered there was an outstanding warrant issued in 2002. The film ‘Freddy Got Fingered’ was released a year earlier and was slated by critics but its goofball plot and ‘gross-out’ comedy saw it achieve cult status. James, of Concord, North Carolina, who is also a writer and artist, later posted his views on the incident on You Tube. He said the officers ran his driving licence and told him there was a warrant for his arrest for failing to return the film to J&J Video, in Salisbury, North Carolina...a rental business long since closed down. “Honestly, you can’t make this up. “The guy brings me to the back of the car and he goes: ‘Sir, I don’t know how to tell you this, but there’s a warrant out for your arrest from 2002. Apparently, you rented a movie, Freddy Got Fingered, and you never returned it.” JAIL The cops said they had to take James – who vaguely remembered renting the movie - to jail but first allowed him to take his daughter to school on the promise of attending the police station. And he must now attend court on 27th April. Failing to return rental property is a Class 3 misdemeanour in North Carolina and can carry a fine of up to $200. Stunned James said: “That’s what my local police force is up to. They are chasing people for movie rentals that don’t even exist anymore – this is what my tax dollars pay for. Good job NC, your incompetent institution never ceases to amaze me.” However, Canadian comedian Tom Green saw the You Tube clip and tweeted: “I just saw this and I am struggling to believe it is real.” The actor, currently on tour in Australia, called James to apologise for the arrest and even offered to pay any fine imposed. “If it’s 200 bucks of course I’ll pay it for him, it is the principle of the thing.” And James, a single father, has since been reminded of his love for the film - which stars Green, as an unemployed cartoonist whose world is turned upside down after spreading rumours about his dad - after watching it again.

Fire engulfs UAE residential towers

A FIRE has raged through two residential towers in the United Arab Emirates. Firefighters, in Ajman Emirate, just north of Dubai, were called to a blaze that struck one tower block, and then spread to another, housing over 3,000 apartments, in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The residential towers were immediately evacuated, with many being treated for breathing problems and minor injuries, as fire teams battled to extinguish the flames. The apartment complex contains 12 tower blocks, and this incident comes only a few months after a blaze that engulfed a 63 storey hotel, in central Dubai, on New Year’s Eve, which took 20 hours to bring under control.

What becomes of a Lease Contract in the event of the landlord’s death

DEAR LAWYER, My mother passed away very recently. My brothers and I are named as the heirs in her Spanish Will, as yet we have not yet signed the inheritance or probate in Spain. In principle we are all in agreement regarding the contents etc and we do anticipate any problems between us regarding the inheritance. However, the property my mother owned in Denia is rented out to tenants. Is this lease contract now terminated following her death? Could we now rent the property out if we wished, although we have not signed the heritage papers? Lastly, could you help us in the process of inheritance in Spain? Thank you for your help. Dear reader, thank you for your email. Before answering your enquiry, we would like to offer our condolences for the loss of your mother. Our office can advise you regarding the whole inheritance process, and assist you in the payment of the taxes and registration of the assets in your name, etc. Regarding the questions that you have asked, you should be aware that: 1. The death of your mother, whom I understand was the landlord (lessor) of the property, does not in itself terminate the contract, since it is not a cause for termination, and therefore in principle the lease contract continues for the length and terms agreed. As the heirs you will take over the position of the deceased as landlord in the contract. The death of the landlord, in this case your mother, would only finalize the lease if your mother was named as the usufructuary (having the life interests), i.e:, she had the use and enjoyment of the property but she was not the owner. If this was the case, in accordance with Article 13.2 of the Urban Lease Act (Law 29/1994), the death of the usufructuary terminates the right of usufruct, and so the lease would also be terminated. 2. With regard to the possibility of heirs being able to rent or enter into new contracts relating to the real estate properties which form part of the estate; as long as you are not considering renouncing the inheritance, you could sign contracts in your capacity as heirs. It doesn’t matter that you have not yet formally inherited the property, nor signed the corresponding acceptance of the inheritance before a Spanish public notary, or where appropriate, in a private document. In the case you mentioned, if there is a lease contract in place, as we have said, it will continue in force, but if the contract is over or if you reach an agreement with the lessee (tenant) for its termination, you could sign new contracts with other tenants, although I understand that it should be stated in said documents that you are signing in your capacity as heir. If you need help with a lease or an inheritance in Spain, contact us and we will help you.

Some people are mainly focused on the price when they look for a health insurance and they decide to contract the cheapest one, but‌ Watch Out! Inexpensive health insurances are available on the market at the time of contracting the policy, but as the person gets older the price of the policies drastically increases considering the change to a higher age bracket. ASSSA does not increase the price due to age, which means that the premium will remain the same age bracket that you contracted at the beginning. In the end you will pay a lower amount and your insurance will result cheaper. A further point to consider is the written contractual guarantee of no cancellation. If there is no guarantee and the Insurance Company cancels the policy, it may occur that contracting another insurance becomes complicated due to age or the development of some diseases. ASSSA guarantees under contract that your policy will not be cancelled, therefore you can have the peace of mind of being provided with a lifetime coverage. Health is the best investment we can ever make and as such should be treated, not as the purchase of the cheapest choice by the time of contracting. Other factors to consider are the solvency and experience of the Company, the customer service, easy access to medical assistance, medical network and coverage offered. ASSSA puts at your disposal its solvency and more than 80 years of experience to provide you with the best personalised attention in your own language and the best health care any time you need it. Don’t wait any longer. Invest in your health with ASSSA.

Alan Partridge aha- pah Clueless, spineless, charmless, gutless, brainless, pointless. Welcome to the woebegone world of Alan Partridge. Yes! Local Radio. The aforementioned litany of loathing was uttered by Martin Kelner. He has just been given the big flick by BBC Radio Leeds (a station he’d worked for on & off for 30 years). Of course the BBC wouldn’t call it chucking someone under the bus. It’s more like “Recycling our creative pool,” or “Realigning our resources to our corporate strategy.” Self-serving drivel spouted by the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow. Martin is middle aged, middle class, Anglo Saxon - (I don’t know his religion or inside leg measurement which I’m sure is a great relief to him, certainly in the trouser department). BBC Local Radio founded in 1967, is loathed by the London hierarchy – “God’s boots, it’s so parochial old chap, all flat caps & whippets.” They must be delighted that BBC local radio listening figures are going down the dumper faster than Aston Villa. To my mind the rot set in some 15 years ago when,Greg Dyke, the Director General at a staff convention opined “We (the BBC) are hideously white.” Mayday! People were being parachuted into totally inappropriate positions to satisfy a ridiculous quota system. Maybe that’s how I got my start.”Right, we have to fill our ‘oik quota.” Now it’s, “We must have more female presenters.” Why? It’s all well a good as long as it’s not a crowbar job. The only award I have (other than a tufty badge) is a Sony Radio Academy Gold 2004, won with a female co-presenter & a female production team. So this isn’t some misogynist rant. Kelner, no doubt will be replaced by some bright young thing for half the cost & half the age of the target audience (55+). The BBC maintain they don’t chase ratings, so the fact we are being patronised by some flibbertigibbet presenter (most BBC local radio listeners probably have slippers older) matters not a jot? Trust me 4 times a year the ratings are published & it’s nationwide “Squeaky Bum Time.” We must preserve the Partridge & his local radio gems. “Big Yellow Taxi there by Joni Mitchell- a song in which she complains ‘They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.’ A measure which would have alleviated traffic on the outskirts of paradise something Ms. Mitchell failed to point out. Nice song though.” Local Radio Rocks.

Sculpture Garden welcomes Transformation by JACK TROUGHTON CERAMIC ARTISTS Puri Martinez and Marion Geerts show off their work at the Klein-Schreuder Sculpture Garden’s latest exhibition in Alfaz del Pi. The exhibition is called ‘Transformacion’ and the inauguration is on Sunday (3rd April) at 11am at the charming gardens, home to a permanent display of intriguing art work. Puri was aged 18 when she first became interested in ceramics and as a 30-year-old decided to devote her professional

career to the art form. She teaches pottery and decoration of porcelain at her workshop and in schools. Puri also makes stylish figures in ceramics and in addition paints – examples of her wall paintings can be seen in Archena, Murcia. Marion is Dutch but has lived in Spain since 1975. She has worked as a guide and specialised in Roman and Carthaginian art. As her own interest in art grew, she started to paint. However, today, her main focus is on ceramics and she makes

wonderful dishes and reliefs. Both Puri and Marion are members of a group of ceramic artists called ‘El Taller’ in Murcia. The group has its own ovens and both have contributed to exhibitions staged in the city and across the province – and it intends to show work further afield in the future. Entrance to the opening of the exhibition is 3€, including a glass of wine and a performance by pianist A. Munoz de Sus. For more information and directions to the garden, go to www.klein-schreuder.com.

April in your garden by

Dick Handscombe Holistic gardener and author

IT’S APRIL and most of us will now have no fear of a late frost so Spring gardening can begin in earnest for both those with gardens and those restricted to apartment terraces and balconies., and for some just windowsills around the house and on the street for village houses. Annuals can now be safely planted but do ensure you plant them in rich water retentive compost/soil mixes. The mIxing in of a half teaspoon of TerraCottem gel based soil improver into planting holes will pay for itself in reduced watering needs and less plant losses. It is also a good time to sow the seeds of such annuals as zinnias and marigolds. If you have a veggie garden sow zinnias as a large patch for cutting and a line of marigolds to attract blackfly and deter insects especially asparagus beetle and white fly. While on the subject of beneficial companion planting a pot or patch of basil plants can help deter flies, beetles and mosquitoes. Likewise mint plants can help deter ants, aphids, cabbage butterfly and mosquitoes. Thinking of ants do dust natural yellow sulphur powder (azufre in Spanish) around nest entries and on lines of crawling ants. This is less expensive and safer than using ant killing chemicals products. Perennial plants and shrubs can now be planted. Although frost damage was little this past winter and early spring do select plants for your normal minimum temperatures. Review the frost and drought resistances of possible plants in the plant lists in our book ‘Your Garden in Spain’. For convenience the list is divided into groups such as annuals, perennials, ground cover plants, flowering trees, climbers etc,. There is still time to plant flowering trees for their flowers, shade and the hiding of neighbouring houses. But do choose trees appropriate to the size of your garden. Some such as Caesalpinia gilliesii the bird of paradise tree and Cercis, the Judas or love tree, stay small. However trees such as Jacaranda and Acacia can grow as large as a house. Shrubs such as bougainvilleas, lantana, datura and hibiscus can be planted now but recognise they could be caught by air frosts during April. If this has happened before, plant in the sunniest and most sheltered spots in the garden. Against south facing

house or boundary walls helps. Before we run out of space now is the time to sow vegetables such as carrots parsnips squashes and radishes and plant some more lettuce plantlets. In coastal areas tomatoes and peppers can be planted but it is best to wait until May inland. A full list to choose from with indicated seasonal sowing planting out and harvesting times will be found in ‘Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain’. Of cause perennial and annual herbs can be planted now and annual ones grown from seeds. We always

sow a selection of differently flavoured basils chosen from the 30 or so varieties listed in the Chiltern Seeds catalogue. Have a look at their website. It is useful to request a hard copy of both the plant and vegetable seed catalogues. Hopefully April will be sunny this year and that light rain will dampen still hard soils to give plants and seeds a good start in life.and infrequent as the rain earlier in March ensured that the soils are damp this year –a rather different situation to this time of year last year.

Windows 10 Hi Aunty Virus I decided to download Window 10 a few months ago but have the same problem on occasions which now I cannot resolve. All icons that usually appear at the bottom of my screen are no longer visible. The date and time, wifi, antivirus, document etc. icons all missing, the four windows shutdown icon, nothing happens so I have to use the on/off switch to turn my laptop off. Can you suggest what I can do to solve this problem, when it previously happened I turned my laptop off, unplugged it waited a few seconds then on turning back on everything was as it should be! I look forward to your reply. Regards Andrea

icons should reappear Press Windows button + X, Select Taskmanager, click on Windows Explorer, click on Restart on Windows Explorer Or you may have W10 in tablet mode, so it behaves a bit differently to how it does on a PC. 1. Click/tap on the Action Center (Win+A) system icon in the taskbar notification area. 2. At the bottom of the Action Center, click/ tap on the Tablet mode button to toggle it on (blue) or off (gray) for what you want

Recycle bin

Hi Aunty, I HOPE that you can help me. I´m using Windows 10, and I emptied my Recycle Bin and now realise that there were some photos in there that I need. I have tried to get them back using Nero rescue Agent. But I don´t quite understand the program and I have had no luck. Can you recommend another program or tell me what I´m doing wrong. Keep up the good work, Mike. Response: Lost files can usually be recovered — if you discover the loss soon enough, but every time you write to the hard drive, you lower the likelihood of a successful recovery. Even a file that’s no longer in the Recycle Bin may still exist. Windows doesn’t overwrite the actual ones and zeros until another file needs the drive space. That’s why I told you to avoid using the PC as much as possible. There are several good file recovery programs available. I recommend Recuva Portable. It’s easy to use and has a very good track record. It’s also free. Another is EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard.

Life Coach

I resent my sister My parents said I could go on a holiday with my friend and her parents this year, until my little sister found out and made a huge fuss about it. She cried and wailed so much, that my parents said that it would upset her too much if I went, and I could no longer go. I am so upset, and sick and tired with life revolving around her. She totally controls the family, and I am thinking about moving out as soon as I leave school this year. Have you tried to talk to your parents about it? If they can’t see the situation for what it is, perhaps there is another family member, an Aunt or Grandparent perhaps, who may also see your problem, and could have a word with them. It’s not easy, but parents need to try and be fair to all their children, and not choose one over another. If they were to learn that you are considering leaving home, this might make them realise how much they give in to your sister.

WITH A background in family and matrimonial mediation, Life Coach Sara Bell helps Readers with their daily worries. If you are having difficulties with relationships, family, work or any other aspect of your life, then help is at hand.

Why did we bother? My husband and I paid for an expensive education for my daughter, only for her to announce that she is giving up her Degree studies and is going to work as a waitress at a beach bar in Ibiza. We are furious - we remortgaged the house to pay for her to go to University, but she is dead set on her plans. Why did we bother? You are upset, but my advice would be to give her the freedom to go and do what she wants for now. The harder you battle against this, the more determined she may be to go. She won’t want to work as a waitress in a bar forever. Once she realises that the hours are long, and the work is hard, she might not see this life as something so glamorous. Also these resorts tend to close at the end of September. You’ll probably find she will get it out of her system, come home, and think again about her future.

Flower power

FLOWER ARRANGING and Afternoon Tea was once again a winning combination for Jalon Valley HELP fund raisers.

Cupboard love by Jack Troughton

NEW SHOW ‘After a Fashion’ is a novel romp through Careline Theatre’s wardrobe department, breathing new life into costumes, hats, and accessories. The group has more than 3,000 costumes backstage, all managed by talented Wardrobe Mistress Janet Walker, and they are about to have another moment in the spotlight. And instead of a theatrical white-knuckle ride, ‘After a Fashion’ is a lucky bag of song, dance, and laughter, all inspired by Careline’s past productions – expect pirates armed with cutlasses and pistols,

a terrifying Egyptian mummy, new versions of classic songs and plenty of audience participation…Elvis will even be in the building. Director Andy Crabb and his assistant Tony Sim thought up the concept to use the costumes and props, and give a glimpse into the work backstage – showing off back-drops, ropes and pulleys, and the illusions employed to bring theatrical productions to life. Careline traditionally loves some colorful song and dance routines and choreographer Suzanna Mace, who runs the Careline Dance Academy, is already hard at work. Musical Director Roger

Dean is busy arranging a score to get everyone’s feet tapping. However, it is a team effort. A cast of 30 are rehearsing this original show, Stage Manager Sonia Crabb attempting to make sure the menagerie of panto animals and a visit by the Spanish Armada all go to plan. ‘After a Fashion’ opens at the Careline Theatre in Alcalali on Thursday 19th May and runs until Saturday 21st May at 8pm each evening. Tickets are 12€, or 11€ for prepaid parties of 10 or more, children under 10 are 8€. To book call the box office on 652 294 750 or email carelineboxoffcie@gmail.com.

Guests braved wind and rain to get to Pepe’s Restaurant in Alcalali to enjoy the skills of Tina Wallis, who chairs the Flower Arranging Group, and help the charity raise 606€ to support its work in the community. After Tina completed her first two colourful arrangements, tea was served and people tucked into a selection of sandwiches, scones, savoury tartlets, and cakes, all home baked by HELP volunteers. The spread inspired such comments as: “the best tea ever” to “when is the next one?” And following two more lovely displays, the famous HELP raffle took place, with the four arrangements becoming the star prizes. HELP President Elaine Horton, thanked all those who had helped to put the event, all the guests, and Tina Wallis for creating such beautiful arrangements. The charity’s next event is the Race Night at El Cid, Benidoleig on Friday, 22nd April. For more information visit www.jalonvalleyhelp.com

You are working to resolve issues and taking it upon yourself to bring peace too, to a situation which was veering out of control but which now seems to be very much back on track. Now look within as some love comes through for you. Mercury enters into Taurus at the end of the week just after Venus conjuncts with Ceres. Whilst Mercury highlights some hard work just ahead, Ceres is calling time on a matter that begs for resolution through calm objectives. Venus goes on to enter into Aries, and this may put the cat amongst the pigeons, but it speeds things up in the process. Mercury finds the attraction of stability in Kora this week, as the smallest of planets can have great influence in the astrological dimension of the Zodiac. It is time now therefore for you to take on something small and to make it just what it could be. You will get the guidance and the energies that you need, but above all have faith in yourself. The current phase of Moon shows an affinity to Planet Jupiter which is under the influence of the Sun in quincunx. Thus there comes a need to put in a lot of work to ensure that a project is completed in good time. You shouldn’t rely on anybody right now, since the onus is on you to take things to the next dimension. Why? Because you can! Centre stage is the very best showcase for your talents admittedly, but you have to think before you take things to a new level, when it leaves behind devoted people who just want to see this project through. You may be a born leader but you have to take control of the situation and look before you leap, since it is pride that comes now, before any fall. The Sun shines on a squaring of Pluto midweek. Pluto can be irritatingly slow to take on the new if it is thought that the old was somehow better some way! However time and tide wait for no man and there is a need to expedite proceedings so that it is a prompt solution that can be offered, and then, bar none, everyone can be happy at last

Magic moments

MEMORIES ARE often all we have left of the past, although we can hope for the wonderfully happy days that are in store for us.

The present is just that and it truly is the gift, whereas the past is over and the future is just out there, just a little out of our reach, as it should be. As we look back we experience a wonderful nostalgia of days spent in the sun, playing and having fun. When we were children the World was a truly different place than it is today, and we had no responsibilities whatsoever. Time went slowly as each day was somehow sculptured around us, and our play, our friends and our family. Food was there on the table and there was a warm and comfortable bed in which to sleep in. Life went by and we were a part of it, experiencing the changes that were going to be a feature of our development, but blissfully unaware of what was to come our way. KENNY, MY daughter is waking every night from nightmares. She says that there are people in her room. How do I even start to work on what she is experiencing so I can help her through this please? Rose D. Hi Rose, you do not say how old your daughter is but if she is able to sense people may be in her room then she is old enough to draw you some pictures. Simply ask her to draw what she sees in these troubled dreams, and ask her what people are there, when they clearly shouldn’t be. Hopefully too you could encourage her to seek the protection of angels by getting her to draw her concept of an angel. There are many books about angels too, and reading a story to her about the power of angels and maybe an angel figure or two would change the nightly trauma and encourage her into restful undisturbed sleep. Send me photos of any disturbing drawings to my mobile please!

Dogs to help with Behavioural problems by CAROLINE TYSZKA YOUNG PEOPLE are being helped with behavioural problems by learning to train dogs. A scheme, aimed at helping 12 to 17 year olds to learn how to socialise and behave in a responsible manner within society, has been taking place at a centre for special training run by CAMFRE, in Elche. The project, called “Help a Friend”, has been sponsored by the Department of Equality and Inclusive Policies, and has involved five young people choosing a dog and working with their animal, at the Baix Vinalopó centre, opposite the General Hospital of Elche. The aim of the scheme has been to help those participating with their behavioural, mental or social problems, by working closely with their chosen dog, as it has been shown that animals can help relax people, and build self-esteem in troubled situations. Afonso Juárez, the coordinator of CAMFE, said that, “the children were chosen because of their personal situations, where, mostly, other attempts to assist in their behaviour had failed. They all chose their own dogs, and have benefited greatly, participating in an exhibition with their animals, and making several trips with them.”

SAMM Spring 2016 Racing Starts THE CREWS of seven boats arrived at the CTD ‘Infanta Cristina’ Los Narejos at 10am for the first race day of the Spring 2016 handicap series to find that something was missing – the wind. It did not appear until late morning, delaying the start from 11am till 12.30pm, but then blew steadily at between 8 and 12 knots. This meant that only one six lap race could be scheduled. The larger boats were away first, with the two Sailfish (Mistral and Sirocco) crossing the line just feet apart. The dinghies followed 10 minutes later, and all four crossed within a few seconds, overall a very good start for all boats.Mistral held the lead for the first four laps until she was caught by the faster dinghies. The catamaran ‘Hamour’ had a bad race and was lapped by all the other boats. At times there was some very close racing between ‘Mistral’ and ‘Hamour’ and then ‘Mistral’ and the Gamba ‘Shoestring Cuatro’, the later boat taking over the lead position with a lap and a half to go which she held onto till the end, finishing the race in 1hr, 16mins, 38secs. The last boat to finish, other than poor ‘Hamour’, completed the course in 1hr. 35mins 16secs. Final positions, once handicaps were applied, were first ‘Shoestring Cuatro’, second the other Gamba ‘Shoestring Uno’ and third the Sailfish ‘Mistral’. An unwanted bit of excitement occurred at the end of the race, when the crew of ‘Sirocco’ went overboard while picking up the mooring buoy, but a prompt reaction by the skipper, Julian Pering, had him back on board before the support boat arrived. Menorca ONE OF the Balearic Islands in the Mediteranean, this island was so named due to it´s size, relative to the larger Mallorca, close by. Passed back and forward between the British and the French, the island was repossessed by Spain in 1802 and has remained Spanish since, although influences of the British rule can still be seen in some architectural styles on the island. Having gained UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Status in 1993, Menorca is keen to be an ecological, sustainable tourism resort which strives to ensure that tourism does not run out of control, rather that it is undertaken in harmony with the environment surrounding this beautiful island.

Activities on offer include horseback holidays, cycling, kayacking and snorkelling, all excellent ways to explore this island and still support the environmental tourism in place. The weather in Menorca averages high 20s in July and August, and pleasant temperatures of 20 – 25 degrees in the shoulder months of May, June, September and October. The island has over 200km of coastline, and over 70 beaches, from little known discoveries to full resorts with lifeguards, restaurants, shops and facilities for tourists & locals alike. The main four local industries of wine, cheese, Traditional Recipes and Seafaring Gastronomy have teamed up to give a seal of excellence to those offering the traditional products on their premises – eat in one of these and you won´t be disappointed! And whilst there are plenty of options for families of all ages in activies, restaurants and hotels, the island also offers plenty of 4* Adults Only accommodation, a haven from all those children in the school holidays!

The island is also well known for its Fiestas, the biggest being held at the end of June, in the city of Cuitadella, when the streets are closed to traffic at nights, and bonfires and fireworks are celebrated in the streets, finishing with horse displays and a show of jousting on the Sunday as the celebration draws to a close. Worldwide Horizons are offering package holidays including direct flights, transfers and 4* All Inclusive accommodation from May – October 2016 from just 490€ per person. Burt rolling back the Bearskin Years SOME OF you will be able to cast your mind back to 1972, and for those of you who are too young to do so, the adjoining photo will give you an idea where we are going. Burt Reynolds was 35 years old, his movie ´Deliverance´ was in the cinemas, and the chances are he felt he could climb every mountain, and ford every stream, or in this case pose for a nudie pic. Burton Leon Reynolds was born in Lansing, Michigan 80 years ago, and last week during a live chat at a film festival in Austin, Texas said about the photo “It was really stupid … I don’t know what I was thinking; I really wish I hadn’t done that,” TILT! The iconic photograph made some serious waves when it appeared in Cosmopolitan magazine selling 1.5 million copies and helped cement both Cosmo and Reynolds’ name in popular culture. He also revealed a lot of it was down to male bravado whilst adding “As long as it was only a certain amount of pubic hair showing, I was all for it, you know,” Yep! gotcha Burt! Now in full flow nudie man told the live audience “The only rules I had ... I wanted a lot of drinks before, I have to be truthful, I was totally zonkered when I did the picture ... that stupid smile, that’s what it is you know.” Right on brudder! The event in Texas is a pretty hip festival and Burt was there to promote his upcoming documentary ´The Bandit´ that follows his relationship with his friend and director Hal Needham during the filming of the wonderful ´Smokey And The Bandit´ in 1977, a movie that established Burt Reynolds as a natural born comedy actor. And it all began with THAT photo! THERE WAS quite a kafuffle after Stephen Fry´s infamous remark at the BAFTA´s about Jenny Beavan being dressed like a bag lady, and things didn´t go too well at the Oscars either when she collected her Best Costume Design Award for Mad Max: Fury Road. The cameras captured many unimpressed faces with her choice of clothing, knee-jerking Jenny into defending her actions saying “The thing that lots of people are missing is that I was wearing a costume, homage to Mad Max, I look ridiculous in frocks, I can’t wear heels, my back goes out and my feet get terribly sore.” Gloriously honest stuff!

In a room in New York’s Manhattan Prince announced to masses of journalists and celebrities that he´s about to write his autobiography and that the working title is ´The Beautiful Ones.´ The packed room included famous faces like Harry Belafonte and his opening line was “You all still read books, right?... My brother Dan is helping me with it,” he continued “He’s a good critic and that’s what I need ... He’s not a ´yes´ man!” After all the ballyhoo Prince then said enthusiastically “If you don’t mind, I’m going to go home and change real quick and come back and party with y’all.” Cheeky Boy!

THERE´S A street in Brixton called Tunstall Place that has a giant mural depicting David Bowie. After his death in January people laid a sea of tributes in front of the mural and held an impromptu street party to celebrate his music. The local council said “Lambeth council is set to locally list the David Bowie mural, but doing this is ultimately the family’s decision so we must be patient.” Lambeth residents have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of affection demonstrated by floral tributes, messages, and people visiting the Bowie mural to pay their respects to the unique ´Brixton Boy.´

MATTHEW PERRY, Chandler in ´Friends,´ seems to always be the cast member that doesn´t quite fit when reunions and all else are on the menu. He appeared on This Morning recently bearded and proving that he´s most likely not a morning person, and sadly was mocked big time for this by many UK viewers, some saying how “he´s aged” Em hello! another saying “we’ve become a nation of shallow, judgemental morons … good call. He was on the show to talk about ´The End of Longing´ a dark comedy he wrote that centres around four people in their 40´s re-evaluating their lives. Good on you Chandler (Matthew) IF YOU have problem with how much to tip, take a leaf out of Amy Schumer´s book who last week tipped staff in a New York Theatre bar $1,000. She had just seen a performance of ´Hamilton´ at the Richard Rodgers theatre when she signed over a grand and was overheard saying “I’ve been there.” Schumer worked as a waitress in New York for many years before her career in comedy took off. One of the theatre staff told the New York Daily News “She’s been one of us, she reminded me that there’s still a lot of good in the world.” Its only money sweet pea! Time for another trip back to the 70´s with three lovely ladies who put paid to the baddies of this world and did it in the most elegant and stylish way. ´Charlies Angels´ ran from 1976 to 1981 producing 110 episodes along the way. Jaclyn Smith was the only ´Angel´ who featured in every episode as well as playing a cameo role in the 2003 film ´Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle. ´ Jaclyn still looks amazing considering she turned 70 last October, having kept herself busy by launching a career in design in the ‘80s. From her photo she should take up health and beauty.

Outspoken 19 year old actress Chloe Moretz not only turned down the offer to join Taylor Swift´s ´Girl Squad´ but responded to Kim Kardashian´s naked selfie by saying “I truly hope you realize how important setting goals are for young women, there’s a huge difference in respecting the platform that you’re given as a celebrity and slut shaming something.” That’s her told then!

Famous father and son appear by Caroline Tyszka

TWO EXCELLENT choirs will combine in concert at the Ecumenico Centro - Cristo Resucitado Church in C/Diamante at La Zenia. The concert will take place on Friday 8th April at 8pm and will feature the well-known Orihuela Costa Male Voice Choir, conducted by local singer, conductor and voice teacher Nigel Hopkins. The Male Voice Choir will sing a brand new programme of popular songs, designed to please local audiences, which will even include a song sung in Zulu! The visiting guest choir is the famous NTU (Nottingham Trent University) Chamber Choir, who are in La Zenia as part of their Spanish tour. Their tour takes in Barcelona Cathedral, the Sagrada Familia, and the fêted Montserrat Monastery, La Zenia, and the Military Church (Santo Domingo) in Cartagena. They are conducted by Matthew Hopkins, Nigel’s son, who is Director of Music at NTU in the UK, and himself a top class professional tenor, orchestral and choral conductor, and voice

coach. Last autumn, NTU Chamber Choir were runners-up in the International Eistedfodd at Llangollen, one of the world’s most prestigious choral competitions, and are in constant demand throughout the UK. In May they will be backing the singer Russell Watson on his UK tour, and, next month, appear with the Philharmonia Orchestra in the Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham. It is very rare for father and son to sing together in public these days, due mainly to busy schedules and distant geography, but this may just be one of those happy occasions. Tickets (in aid of church funds) are 8€ and are available from La Ponderosa Gift Shop at La Zenia C.C. This happy concert is an event not to be missed. NTU Chamber Choir will also be giving a free concert on the previous day at the Torrevieja Christian Fellowship in Torrevieja, at 5pm. All are welcome, and there will be a retiring collection in aid of the Reach-Out charity.

Body Parts THIS WEEK’S lesson is about parts of the body – but before you get too excited, it’s actually about verbs that are connected to parts of the body. I will explain. For example the word for “arm” in Spanish is “brazo”. There is a verb in Spanish connected to this which describes what you do with your “brazos” from time to time – that is “abrazar” which means to “embrace”.

There are quite a few of these, so let’s see what else we can come up with. The word for “eye” is “ojo”. In English we sometimes say “to cast an eye over”, well in Spanish this is “ojear”. This can be confused with “hojear” which specifically means to browse through a book or magazine. Here is another one – the word for back, which is “espalda”. Well “to back” something in Spanish, in the sense of to support something, is “respaldar”. Before I go any further I would like to point outside something interesting about English here. We very often use exactly the same word for the verb as for the noun. For example we have the noun: “eye” and also the verb “to eye” something. We say “the back” and also “to back”. We can say “to arm” as well, but this has a completely different meaning. Confusing eh? The “forehead” in Spanish is “la frente”. From this we have the verb “enfrentar” which means “to face” (there we are again in English – “the face”, “to face”) or “to confront”. The preposition “enfrente” comes from the same root. It means “opposite” that is “facing”. The word for “knee” in Spanish is “rodilla”, and “to kneel” is “arrodillarse”. Notice this time in English we say “to kneel” and not “to knee” which also exists but means something completely different and not something one would expect to do in church. Going back to the eye for a moment, the word for “eyelash” in Spanish is “pestaña”, whilst “pestañear” means “to blink”. There’s some logic there, but it is not to be confused with “párpado” which is “eyelid” and “parpadear” which is “to blink” in the sense of “to flicker”. This is the verb you use when you phone the technical people to tell them your Internet connection has gone off. It’s when you have that interesting conversation with them about the little lights on your modem or router or whatever it is. You kneel on the floor with your head under the desk, breathing in dust and saying “Ahora está parpadeando” (Now it’s flickering.”) Don’t tell me you haven’t been there. I imagine that many of you will have come across “sangre” meaning “blood”, especially as our doctors are very keen on sending us off for “un análisis de sangre”. Well, we have a verb from this as well which is “sangrar”. In English we don’t say “to blood” though, we say “to bleed”. Rather confusingly “desangrar” also means “to bleed”, but that’s when you lose all your blood, apparently. I can’t resist finishing off with some more English peculiarities. We “toe” the line and “foot” the bill. We can “head” a ball and “elbow” someone in the ribs. In fact we can also “rib” somebody, “finger” things and “thumb” a lift. We might “nose” around someone’s house, and didn’t we use to “neck” sometime in the past? So, now you have some more things to think about before next week!

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Is your home earthquake proof? (Part III) One of the many questions we architects ask ourselves when designing a building, concerns the reactions that will take place on a structure if an earthquake should take place. The objective is that the structure should withstand an earthquake with a low or moderate intensity, limiting the damage to non-structural elements and, although it may present significant damage during earthquakes of a severe intensity the building will not collapse. To achieve this, there are two opposing schools of thought on the subject; On the one hand we have the classic design: the structure is calculated in such a way so that when there is a quake, the structure will cracks and deform, dissipating energy without collapsing. This means strengthening the structure significantly and assuming that after the occurrence of the earthquake, the structure will be damage but it will not collapse. Implicitly it is assumed that after the “D” day the structure will probably need to be repaired but will stand the shake. The other school of thoughts advocate modifying the dynamic properties of the structure by introducing anti-seismic devices to assist the structure to dissipate the energy. This will ensure that the structure withstands the earthquake in an elastic regime without harm and therefore, without further damages. It means using creative design to resist the earthquake. Why to resist something that can be avoided? Reluctance to new ideas. What are the reasons that these types of special damper devices in the structures are not more widespread in Spain or the rest of Europe? The reason is that to design a mechanical device unique for each building is expensive as it would re-

quire the engagement of mechanical and structural engineers in the design of the building which unless we are talking about a very large buildings, clients would not be very happy to pay those extra fees for an event that may happen once in a hundred years. This fact together with the absence of any norms governing that type of calculations, throws in the big doubt and the responsibility, of weather the calculations have been carried out properly, and the reluctance of many architects and civil engineers to put all their trust on a single hydraulic cylinder three metres long. These facts obviously slow the development of this methodology and its use. Anyway, the engineers I have consulted on this issue highlighted the impossibility of using one particular system to be applied to any other situation. It is also necessary to know the characteristics and technical criteria and construction of the country. It isn’t the same thing to design a building in Japan or in Chile, to name a couple of countries with high seismic risks, there are factors, that could call into question the proposed system. One should not forget that we design buildings in a particular place which has its own history, knowledge and experience, availability of special construction materials and know how, and their own regulatory body. An earthquake is happening right now… When an earthquake affects a city, it is important that buildings remain standing, but it isn’t less that infrastructure such as roads, bridges, ports, etc. should remains unaffected. In Haiti, for example, during the first days after the earthquake that took the lives of more than 150,000 people, emergency humanitarian aid could not arrive to the Caribbean island because the port at the capital, Port au Prince, was completely devastated.

Social awareness and cost. There is a similarity between earthquakes and medical care: and that is “prevention is better than cure”. In the case of Spain detailed geological maps have been created that allowing us to scrutinize micro-zoning which facilitate the study of soil mechanics more precisely, which in turn has helped engineers and us architects to determine with accuracy the seismic hazard which our buildings are going to face in the future. However the seismic vulnerability that we as a society are prepared to accept, is based on cold statistics. Seismologist have considered all the quakes that have occurred in the past, and thereon have calculated the probabilities of a similar tremor taking place again and on those basis we architects calculate structures. i.e. we do not design buildings in Spain for a grade XII intensity because a seismic grade XII has never taken place in Spain or for that matter any where in the world, so we plan buildings to withstand earthquakes similar to those that have occurred in the past here, by past I mean since we have been able to record them. Until the eighteenth century the recorded earthquakes are rare and there was no real understanding of the phenomenon. The first earthquake that we have some reference occurred in China in 1.177 B to C. There is a Chinese Earthquake Catalogue which mentioned a dozen of such events in the following centuries. In the history of Europe, the first earthquake is referred to was in the year 580 B.C. but the first clearly described is from the mid sixteenth century. The oldest of the earthquakes we have historical documentation such as photographs or detailed description occurred in Mexico in the late fourteenth century. Although five hundred years is nothing in geological time scale but long enough for a human life span.

In a bowl add black pudding meat, sausage meat and a pinch of salt, mix together with your hands. Empty the mix from the bowl onto a lightly floured chopping board and spread the black pudding flat. now peel the eggs gently, trying not to break any as it will effect the visual side at the end. Once peeled lightly flour each egg, whitch will stop them sticking to the sausage mix. Divide the sausage mix up into quarters and place one egg in the middle as shown in the photo and close the black pudding gently around the egg so its encased completely with no cracks. Empty a small handful of the breadcrumbs onto a small plate. whisk 1 egg in a cup and brush generously over each of the scotch eggs, this will help the breadcrumbs stick and stop the black pudding from cracking in the pan. Gently roll each scotch egg through the breadcrumbs, so each one is coated evenly. now heat up a pan to shallow fry your scotch eggs - you only need the oil to be a few centimeters or a couple of inches deep. When the oil is hot, carefully lower each scotch egg into the oil and cook the four scotch eggs for 8 minutes or in till they are golden brown. remove and drain on a sheet of kitchen towel.

Skin cancer detection campaign Can you tell which of these is an innocent lump, bump, wound or wart ? Actually, none of them are……..

THESE ARE ALL SKIN CANCERS There are 2 main types of skin cancer, melanoma and nonmelanoma. The most common non-melanomas are basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas. Malignant melanomas are not as common as non-melanomas but are more serious. Statistics provided by Cancer Research UK show that: • In 2010, 12,818 people in the UK were diagnosed with malignant melanoma skin cancer. • In 2010 there were 2,203 deaths from malignant melanoma skin cancer in the UK. • In 2005-2009, 88.2% of adult skin cancer patients (83.6% of men and 91.6% of women) in England survived their cancer for five years or more. • In 2010 around 100,000 people were diagnosed with nonmelanoma skin cancer and there were 546 deaths from non melanoma skin cancer. These figures will obviously be much higher in British people living is hot climates such as Spain due to greater exposure to the sun. Damaging ultraviolet rays from the sun are the cause of most cases of skin cancer and are responsible for 6 in 10 melanomas and 9 in 10 non-melanoma skin cancers. The use of tanning beds also increases the risk of skin cancer. Who is most at risk? • Fair skin. Anybody can develop skin cancer but you are more at risk if you have pale skin and light coloured eyes. Those that have freckles and burn easily are at increased risk. • Previous episodes of sunburn. Sunburn at any time but especially as a child or teenager puts you at greater risk of skin cancer and in particular if the burns became blistered.

Just maybe, MOBO group has the answer for you. MOBO group is one of the boat share groups within the Sailing Association Mar Menor. SAMM is based at the Santa Cristina centre in Los Narejos, on

the Mar Menor, and has several groups, covering a range of boating activities. MOBO group owns ‘FEFI’, a 22ft Spanish built fishing boat (Artaban), which is moored on Santa Cristina’s secure pier. She has an inboard diesel engine, 2 forward cabins, and can carry up to 6 people. The owner members share the running costs, the maintenance and, most importantly, the sailing. Generally they sail on the delightful

Mar Menor, but sometimes venture through the La Manga canal to the Mediterranean. Entry and running cost are very reasonable, and there are vacancies at present. If interested, you could ‘phone Mike at 678 14 56 74 to find out more, and make a date for a trial run. SAMM also has an open day on 11th May. See the SAMM website at www.sailingmarmenor.com, or contact Mike by e-mail, michael_phillips1@msn.com.

The results were: Gold Category,1st Ron Swift 38 pts, 2nd Rodney Smith 31 pts, 3rd Arthur Williams 31 pts C/B; Silver Category, 1st Ken Hopkins 31 pts, 2nd Graham Knight 30 pts, 3rd Ron Nicholoson 27 pts. Nearest the Pins were, hole 4, Rod Smith, hole 6, Alan Williams, hole 8, Rod Smith, and hole11: Liam Foley. Longest Drive was Malcolm Anderson. The society’s next home game is at Vistabella on Tuesday 11th April, first tee 9am. Benitachell Bowls Club Winter League Report LAST WEEK, Benitachell’s Winter League game was against local rivals Javea Green.

Cartagena Rugby Club’s under-18s in England by Ian Askew

The top team was skipped by Dudley Davies with Clive Langan, Mike Smith and Carol Davies. In an exceptional away performance, they dominated from the outset, and went on to win 22 – 9. The overall result was an equal share of the twelve points on offer. The Berleen team started badly, but fought back well, with the final score close, at 16 - 18. BBC are hoping to maintain their 100% home record with their next game against La Marina.

CRU’S UNDER 18s had a real life adventure last week, when their trip to Redcar took an unexpected turn, as their return flight was cancelled, and they had to embark on a trans-european coach journey to get home. Members of Cartagena Rugby Club’s Under-18s team travelled, on 18th March, to the English town of Redcar, near Middlesbrough. The trip, traditional in the world of rugby, is intended to give first-hand experience of how a foreign club operates, both in sports and organizationally. Last Sunday, the Cartagena youngsters faced the Redcar R.U.F.C. in a very competitive match, with no less than six tries per team, in front of a large crowd. The final score was a draw, 34 all. The tour was due to return on Monday, but found their flight cancelled as a result of the French air traffic controllers’ strike. This, coupled with the European flight problems resulting from the incidents at Brussels airport, meant they would not be able to get a flight for nearly a week, and their only practical option to get home was to travel by coach from Redcar to Girona, in Cataluña, and then by a second coach to Cartagena, a journey of over 36 hours, leaving on Wednesday morning, and arriving late Thursday evening, and crossing three countries, including the Eurotunnel crossing of the English Channel.

New sponsor for bowls INSURANCE COMPANY Linea Directa is the new sponsor of the National Lawn Bowls Championships. The championship committee was “delighted” to announce the company’s backing and has renamed the competition ‘the Linea Directa Lawn Bowls Competition’ for 2016. A spokesman said: “We would like to give huge thanks for the generous sponsorship and hope that this will be just the start of our association with this major International company.” This year’s tournament is being staged at the Emerald Isle Bowls Club, Orihuela Costa, between 14th to 28th May.

Formula 1 qualifying THE FUTURE of Formula 1’s qualifying format remains shrouded in confusion, after bosses failed to agree on a change for the next race in Bahrain. Teams decided, at the season’s opening race, in Australia, to ditch the new elimination system, and revert to the one that had been in place for 2015, but, when they met, last Thursday, to discuss possible options, returning to the old format was not one of them. F1 boss, Bernie Ecclestone, says there will be more talks early next month. The new format, which saw drivers eliminated, every 90 seconds, through three sessions of qualifying, came in for criticism in Melbourne last weekend, mainly because it led to an empty track for the last four minutes of the top-eight shootout, as teams saved their tyres, rather than do another

lap.At an emergency meeting on Sunday, teams agreed unanimously to revert to the 2015 format, which consisted of three knockout sessions, with the slowest cars only eliminated after each session had finished. However, this option was not on the table when the F1 Commission finally met on Thursday. Instead, teams were presented with two options: •To retain the rules used in Melbourne that proved so unpopular; •Or stick with the elimination format for the first two sessions of qualifying, but with an extra minute’s duration, followed by a final qualifying session run as it had been in 2015. As neither option had been discussed by the teams in advance, agreement was not reached. The F1 Commission features Ecclestone, and representatives of all the teams, governing body the FIA, tyre supplier Pirelli,

sponsors and circuits, and, to make a rule change during a World Championship, unanimity is needed. In this case, that did not happen. The year started with the 2015 qualifying format in place, only for Ecclestone to decide he wanted a change, in an effort to spice up the racing weekend. He gave the teams two options: •Adopt the new elimination format; •Or keep the 2015 arrangement and have the top eight re-ordered afterwards, moving the fastest cars backwards on the grid. They went for the elimination format, something Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff described as the “least worst option”. It remains to be seen what changes will be adopted, if any, after the Bahrain race, on 3rd April.

The 10 Most Dangerous Sections of Secondary Roads Bikers Seriously by n332.es

For the thirteenth consecutive year, the EuroRAP independent consortium has published their report on the top ten high-risk locations on Spain´s secondary road network. The report is based around the number of fatal incidents for the period between 2012 and 2014, the length and type of the section of road, and the average daily traffic, known as the IMD, or Intensidad Media de Diaria de tráfico. The calculations are then based on factors such as a road with a low IMD

but a high number of incidents will be classed as a higher risk than a road with a higher IMD. In total, there are 97 routes considered, of which 18 are “black-spots”, over a total of 3,506 kilometres. The profile of the most dangerous road is a conventional single carriageway road, with junctions, and an IMD of below 10,000 vehicles per day. A section becomes extremely dangerous when there is an increase in the number of junctions, such as those adjoining properties, where vehicles join the flow of traffic but are not always able to accelerate to a safe speed. The risk factor is further increased by the mixture of road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, agricultural machinery and other vehicles with differences in speed and physical characteristics. The condition of the road surface and the road markings also play a key role in either reducing or increasing the risk factor on these roads. Five of the ten most dangerous sections

for motorcycles and mopeds are in Andalusia; followed by Catalonia with 3 and Madrid with 2. For motorcyclists, the most dangerous section is in the A-2 in Barcelona, between kilometre markers 605 and 611. As for heavy vehicles, the stretch of the A-7 between Puzol and its junction with the A-3 in Valencia has the highest concentration of incidents. Overall, Galicia, Cataluña and Asturias have some of the most dangerous roads in the country. The number of incidents has decreased by over 40%, but the probability of an incident is three times higher than in 2010. The Basque Country, Murcia and Navarra, are the only regions where there are no sections of road classed as dangerous. The most dangerous section of road is on the N-320 between Casar de Talamanca (Guadalajara) and its crossing with the M-103 in Algete (Madrid). In this section of just 11.2 kilometres, there were 10 fatalities, 6 of whom were on motorcycles or mopeds.

Injured on Tuesday

A motorcyclist became trapped under a car on Tuesday afternoon following a collision with the vehicle on the N-332 near the Camping La Marina holiday resort in La Marina on the coast of the Elche municipality. The incident occurred shortly after midday when the rider was thrown from the motorbike following a collision and became trapped by the lower limbs underneath the car. Fire fighters from Elche attended the scene and lifted the vehicle, allowing medical staff to take the biker to hospital suffering leg injuries but in a conscious state. Later that night, medics in the Murcia region attended another motorcyclist who had been injured, this time in the Agridulce urbanisation area on the A-7 motorway. This incident occurred at around 22:50 when calls were received by the emergency coordination centre of a motorcyclist heading in the Almería direction having collided with the crash barrier and being thrown from the vehicle. After emergency medics had stabilised the man at the scene he was taken to the Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital in a serious condition.
