Pool drowning

A FOUR-YEAR-OLD boy tragically drowned in a swimming pool on Wednesday evening shortly after his family arrived at a holiday home on Urbanisation Rocio del Mar in Torrevieja from the UK. It is understood the youngster fell into the water. Emergency services were called and an ambulance crew arrived but were unable to revive the little boy.

Last Sunday Michael Ballantyne collapsed and died taking part with friends in Javea´s annual Mirador Challenge, the 29km walk around the town’s viewing points. He was described as a real gentleman and doing something he loved in the community where he lived.

They also admitted taking too much gear and families in Morocco have sampled the delights of the M&S food hall and pot noodles as a result.

Animal rescue

TORREVIEJA CITY Hall rescued 27 wild animals over the last 12 months in one of its least known civic duties. Councillor for the Environment Fanny Serrano and Animal Protection Councillor Carmen Morate gave a press conference to report on the wildlife recovered in Torrevieja during 2015. And they advised on recommended action to be taken by residents who encounter injured animals or those not in their natural habitat. Animals recovered including a lizard, a Greek turtle, a baby red squirrel and a number of birds ranging from kestrels, woodpeckers, owls and cormorants. Councillor Serrano said: “Probably one of the most unknown services carried out by staff in her department was the recovery of wildlife”. She added the city had a “full recovery protocol for wildlife in the entire municipality coordinated alongside the

Department of Animal Protection and Environment.” In order to help, members of the public are advised to call the Local Police on 092 for most wildlife emergencies but in the case of sea creatures such as stranded sea turtles or dolphins the 112 emergency number should be used. And while waiting for assistance, if possible, people should place the animal in a cardboard box with ventilation holes but not give them food or water. Councillor Morate explained that another important part of the civic collaboration was to insure the “collection of all fishing equipment, especially hooks and netting which are dangerous for animals, and have caused several injuries”. She said: “The Facebook page for the Department of Animal Protection in Torrevieja provides more information and there is a large group of animal lovers that you can always ask for advice on the how to proceed with any situations.”

Coastal rescue

A PENSIONER, believed to be of British origin and aged in her late seventies, was rescued by the emergency services after she tumbled down an embankment at Cala Mosca on the Orihuela Costa. The local police arrived first at the scene but because of the location and the injuries the victim suffered, officers requested assistance from the fire service and emergency medics. However, while the fire service attended quickly, it took the ambulance around half an hour to arrive – an alleged growing problem in the region. Fortunately, the victim was taken to hospital without further problems but it was said if the long-awaited Emergency Coordination Centre was open and running, reaction to incidents would be faster. Cala Mosca is a rough, cliff-lined area with difficult to access beaches classified as unsuitable for bathing. Despite this, the area is very popular with many visitors and residents despite the treacherous access routes.

ROBBERS USED gas to dope a British family as they slept in a Costa Blanca home before helping themselves to valuables. The victims woke up suffering the after affects of the gas to find they had been locked into their Torrevieja home, all the downstairs windows were open, and their property had been stolen. The family – who asked not to be identified - had only been living in the house in the Las Torreta urbanisation for three weeks when the bandits struck on Maundy Thursday and believe they were targeted. And despite using a translator to report the aggravated burglary to the Guardia Civil, they are angry the promised forensics team have never visited the house in search of fingerprints. The family, a 40-year-old sales rep, his wife, and their nine-year-old daughter only arrived in Spain last November. They are all light sleepers. He said: “I got up with a bit of a headache and my legs were a bit like jelly. Me and the wife were not right for 24 hours...I know we were gassed. “They had been in our bedroom; I would like to think they did not go in our daughter’s room and certainly she did not feel ill.” RTN was told his jeans, with pockets full of change and car keys were taken from beside the couple’s bed and valuable jewellery taken from a bedside cabinet – all without waking anyone. He believes a window was “bumped” by the professional thieves to gain access after injecting gas through air vents. “They opened the windows to make sure they didn’t knock themselves out...once you are gassed and you are out, you are out of it.”

LOOT The bandits methodically went through the house, opening cupboards and drawers, and going through handbags – even taking the daughters’ rucksack and her schoolbooks to carry the loot. Missing property included up to 5,000€ of gold jewellery, two laptops, a new Samsung smart phone, a Nokia phone, and around 500€ in cash. “We couldn’t get out of the door, they had taken the keys I always leave in the lock inside to lock us in,” said the dad. “The car was outside on the drive. They had taken the keys from my jeans – which had been next to the bed and left them outside by the car – and every door and the boot was open.” And he said: “All our neighbours are expats and they say this sort of attack is unheard of – I even went to a local police officer who lives nearby and even he said it was unheard of to use gas or drugs in the area.” The family lives in a cul-de-sac and believe they were identified by a car still on British number plates or heard talking at the local school. The victim said he was “livid” he was unable to report the crime in English but returned to the Guardia Civil with the teenage son of a friend to translate. “They did seem quite concerned and said they hadn’t heard of this sort of crime for years – they didn’t class it as a burglary or robbery but a violent robbery, an aggravated crime,” he said. “They said a forensic team would come out but they haven’t rung or come around or done anything since – they could have taken fingerprints at least and perhaps turned up a suspect. They have just let it go and it’s unacceptable.”

#NEWSBITES AMAZON CREATES MORE JOBS FOR SPAIN THE INTERNATIONAL e-commerce giant, Amazon, has announced major extension plans in Spain, which will see thousands more workers being employed. Over the next three years, Amazon plans to create 3,000 more jobs, as they double the size of its centre near Madrid and to open another site near Barcelona. The plans mean that 1,000 additional workers will be needed in Madrid, and the new site will employ a further 2,000 people. With the additional square metres of capacity, the internet business will be able to increase its capacity from 250,000 orders processed each day to 500,000. When the Madrid centre originally opened in 2012, it only employed 40 workers, currently there are around 850 employees. The expansion for the Madrid centre is expected to be completed at the end of 2016, with the new centre in Barcelona being open for business in the autumn of 2017.

CURRENTLY THE polls show a narrowing gap between the government-backed ‘remain’ campaign and the Euro-sceptic ´leave´ movement. However, with scare stories becoming a daily feature in the UK press, the BBC East political reporter Andrew Sinclair was keen to find out what the feeling was across Spain and amongst its 800,000 British residents, around two million live across Europe. And as result he interviewed RTN Editor Jack Troughton, as well as expats planning to vote to stay in and those who believe the UK should leave. “We discussed how uncertainty of the position for those who migrated to EU countries under its freedom of movement legislation has really begun to worry our readers,” said Jack. “At RTN, we know people are wondering what will happen to such basic rights as health care, pensions, education. Nobody is suggesting leaving the EU means we will all be packing our bags and forced to leave but it would be helpful to have some positive input…from both sides.” And the situation is not helped by Europe not actually having a structure for a member state to leave the bloc. Should there be a ‘Brexit’ vote, estimates on how long resulting negotiations with the EU and other member would take vary from two years to the best part of a decade. Ironically, the ballot is being held as the Costa Blanca readies itself for a bumper tourist season with Brits again buying property in the sun. FORGET BBC East has a great many viewers living on the Costas and Andrew said: “People have been getting in touch from Spain over the last two or three weeks and saying ´don’t forget about us’. “They are saying ´we are out here and very confused’ they have concerns and tell us ‘we are really worried about our future.” And Andrew said: “The debate is as relevant here as it is in Norwich, Ipswich or Cambridge and there is a real debate here. – not everyone is in the ‘remain’ camp. There are people who want to leave too; and it is argued with real passion here as in the UK.” He regularly reports from Westminster and said the two campaigns were almost running neck and neck. “It is much closer than everyone expected, the general consensus was there would be a clear lead for the ‘remain campaign’.” Andrew said the gap had narrowed in the past few weeks. “In government circles there is genuine concern, it is much closer than anyone thought.” However, while ‘remain’ has a slight lead, he believes the so far undecided voters hold the key. “When they make up their minds they will swing it – if you look at the last General Election, and that was in the final two or three days.” Andrew said at the moment Europe dominated politics. “And any anything with a European connection is suddenly a big story.” The BBC programme will be screened on Look East at 7.30pm tonight (Friday) and on Sunday Politics at noon on BBC1 on 10th April.

Hospital in Easter “collapse” by RHIANNAN BELL

HEALTH UNIONS claim Torrevieja Hospital was pushed to the limits over the Easter holiday and barely managed to provide adequate care to patients. Groups representing medical and emergency services staff have complained to the Department of Health and the hospital authorities. And describing the situation as “in a state of collapse”, the different unions stated that they had predicted such a situation was imminent. They maintain an influx of tourists together with an increase in the area’s population has resulted in unmanageable pressure on the hospital and its workforce. The complaints detailed how in the

emergency room there was inadequate cover by doctors despite the awareness of exiting problems within the area. Further, it was indicated intensive care specialists “had to use three beds from a different department” as 11 patients were already in isolation, although it was reported two could have been because of flu. Unions are demanding the recruitment of much needed doctors, nurses and support staff to be able to open and properly run certain hospital departments. They are also calling for other action, including relocating the hospital store, which is currently in the Hospital del Vinalopó, in the centre of Torrevieja, to avoid delays when ordering materials.

EMERGENCY CENTRE NEEDED

A CAMPAIGN to get an emergency health centre for Orihuela Costa to provide 24-hour cover to protect a growing population was this week stepped up. Residents and local politicians have called for a centre over the last five years and although a site was set aside and promises over construction made, construction has never taken place. Currently, the SAMU emergency service provides 12-hour cover but Councillor for Health Noelia Grao is adamant a round the clock watch is needed to protect the increasing population of Orihuela Costa. And she said during peak holiday times hundreds of thousands of visitors also added to pressures on the existing emergency service. Councillor Grao and colleague Councillor Lisa Bone are supporting the ongoing campaign and have held talks with the director of Orihuela’s Emergency Health Service, Pere Herrera; who is said to be sympathetic and the politicians are hopeful for a positive response. However, the regional government has announced cuts of 200,000€ to Orihuela’s budget and this could impact on future plans.

Migrant “one in one out” begins GREECE BEGAN sending migrants back to Turkey this week, in a move that has angered human rights groups. As migrants, at the port town of Chios in Greece shouted “no Turkey”, the Turkish Interior Minister, Efkan Ala, confirmed that they had begun to remove refugees, 202 on the first day. It was hoped that the collective deportations would help alleviate the migrant crisis, as failed asylum seekers would now be expelled from Greece and sent back to Turkey. However, as refugees were being sent back, many more were still arriving in boats on the Greek shores. The first returns were carried out calmly, Ewa Moncure, spokeswoman for the EU border agency Frontex, told reporters in Lesbos - although activists staged small protests, shouting “No to deportations” and “EU, shame on you”. The first to be escorted back to Turkey were refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran, with the addition of any Syrians who crossed to Greece after 20th March 2016. The UN Refugee spokesman in Lesbos, Boris Cheshirkov, said they had concerns for those who had been imprisoned or tortured before escaping to Greece, stating that “to be put in a closed environment must feel like punishment, where seeking asylum is not a crime, it’s a fundamental human right.” Human rights groups continue to argue about the legality of the deportations, saying that they break international law and “mark a dark time in Europe’s history.” As the migrants were returned to Turkey, thirty-two Syrian migrants were the first to arrive in Germany from Turkey under the new scheme, flying into Hanover, according to officials. Under the scheme, some 72,000 refugees are expected to be removed from Greece.

#NEWSBITES WAGES INCREASE THE NEW national living wage came into force last week in the UK and millions of workers will now receive a bigger pay packet, as the new minimum living wage for employees over the age of 25 rises is £7.20 as from 1st April 2016. Business leaders are concerned that the higher wage bill make it harder for them to be able to afford to keep their staff as this, combined with other costs, increases their outgoings. TUC general secretary, Frances O’Grady, said: “Britain desperately needs a pay rise, and this increase is good news for those aged 25 or older. However, the government must ensure that younger workers are not left behind; 21 to 24 year-olds will not be seeing an increase.

Murder arrest

A MAN wanted for double murder following a gangland killing in Ireland was arrested at Alicante Airport on Tuesday night. The 32-year-old man was held by Guardia Civil officers after arriving on an EasyJet flight from Belfast and was detained under a European Arrest Warrant. And the suspect, who has not been named, was wanted over the murders of Dublin gangland figures Anthony Burnett, 32, and Joseph Redmond, 25, in County Louth four years ago.

The pair’s bodies were found in a burning car close to Ravensdale Forest in March 2012. It is understood they were tortured and shot in the head before the car was torched. A 41-year-old man from Rathmines, Dublin, was arrested in April 2014 over the killing of the two Ballybough men. Guardia officers were waiting for the arrival of the Belfast flight at 9.30pm after a tip off. The suspect was scheduled to appear at an extradition hearing in Madrid.

Women all at sea by RHIANNAN BELL

TWO YOUNG women were rescued off the Alicante coast when their inflatable dinghy was swept out to sea by strong winds and currents. Police were helped by a jet ski rider to reach the 19 and 21-year-old at they headed for deeper water off Santa Pola – fearing for the safety of the pair, one officer hitched a ride to get to the small boat. He was able to take control of the dinghy and help its return to shore while medic and members of the Red Cross waited to offer assistance. The alarm was sounded at 4pm when a bystander saw the boat heading out to sea near the port entrance. Police alerted maritime authorities in Alicante and specialist assistance offered. However, the quick thinking of officers at the scene prevented the need for a wider reaction; and helped spare the victims more serious consequences. Witnesses said the two women had been out in the boat for over three hours and the pair were cold and tired but otherwise unharmed by the experience.

HOTELS ENJOY FULL HOUSE

HOTELS IN Guardamar del Segura enjoyed a 92% tourist occupation over Easter with occupancy rates were recorded from Holy Thursday to Easter Sunday. The recovery of this tourist sector was also experienced at the Marjal Camping complex which recorded a 95% occupancy. The upward trend was helped by the good weather that was enjoyed across the region over the holiday. Hotel occupancy in 2013 was only 58% and so hoteliers are positively predicting a full summer season occupation rate.

Good Samaritans arrested A BRITISH COUPLE was arrested as they tried to rescue an allegedly abused donkey from land at Fortuna. Peter and Jean Singh, who run Pinoso-based charity ‘The Dog You Need’, attempted to rescue a severely injured and neglected animal. He was alerted to the donkey’s plight in nearby Fortuna and made the decision to enter a plot of land, retrieve the distressed animal and seek urgent medical attention for her. Besides having various injuries, she was also pregnant. However, while transporting the donkey, a police officer flagged down the couple’s vehicle. According Peter, the officer´s manner was abusive and aggressive. He said the officer told him to go back to England and rescue animals there – and recalled that the same officer had stopped him while he was transporting a family of dogs a few months earlier. Along with his wife, Peter was detained for three hours while charges were drawn up for stealing the donkey and they are now awaiting a date to go to court. The pregnant donkey meanwhile was taken to a local stable, which the couple claim was not in good condition and was overflowing with horse excrement. And they expect that she will soon be returned to her owner, and fear her mistreatment will continue. Peter and Jean’s charity has a website www.thedogyouneed.com.

Legion on parade THE STANDARD of a branch of the Royal British Legion in Spain will be paraded in front of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth at this year’s Festival of Remembrance in London. Orihuela Costa and District Branch’s proud standard bearer Eddie Coleman will carry the flag at the Royal Albert Hall on 13th November. Eddie heard the news when he received a call at his La Zenia from the organising committee at the Legion’s London headquarters. And branch Chairman Keith Carter said: “Everyone is absolutely delighted. It is a great honour for all our members and I would like to think the invitation recognises all the hard work that has taken place over the past year. “The branch raised over 15,000€ during last year’s Poppy Appeal, more than any other branch in Spain. It is our target to achieve as much, if not more, this year.” It is only the second time a branch of the Legion’s District North Spain has been recognised with such an invitation. Three years ago Wendy Dengate carried the standard of the Hondon Valley Branch; she is still a member of the branch and the Spain District North committee. Eddie must report to the Albert Hall at 7am on the morning of the festival and will be met by the London district’s Sergeant Major to be put through his paces.

NUCLEAR FEAR IN NORTH KOREA

FEARS ARE growing over a potential attack as North Korea threatens nuclear strikes on Seoul, in South Korea, and also in Washington.

New satellite footage shows a “significant increase in activity” at a nuclear site in the north of the country. Footage of exhaust plumes coming from the radiochemical laboratory in Yongbyon suggest that the leader, Kim Jong Un, is continuing to ignore demands from the west to cease all nuclear activity. American intelligence suggests North Korea could begin recovering material for nuclear weapons “within a matter of weeks to months”, as North Korea separates weaponsgrade plutonium from nuclear reactor waste.

Double booking

AN ARGUMENT between two passengers seemingly assigned the same seat on board a Vueling flight from Alicante to Oran delayed take off on Saturday night. Neither police nor officials from AENA – the Spanish state-owned airport operator – gave reasons for the delay but witnesses claimed it was caused by the confrontation. Passengers said when boarding, the two discovered they had the same seat number and they began to argue – the clash ending when one moved to another seat but soon afterwards was asked by cabin crew to return to his allocated place. The discrepancy was discovered and it was a possible computer glitch had made the double booking.

Eventually the doors were closed and the boarding steps removed. However, after a further delay an airport official entered the plane and told one of the men he had to disembark because his

paperwork was not in order. Initially he refused but did leave and was taken to a special holding room while checks were run on his documentation.

RUGBY GIRLS TRY CHOCOLATE

THE RUSSIAN women’s rugby sevens squad adjourned from training at La Villajoyosa to visit the town’s Valor Chocolate Factory and Museum. The squad were staging a second training camp at Villajoyosa Rugby club ahead of key matches in the Sevens World Series in the USA, Canada and France.

“HASTA LA SIESTA BABY” THE SPANISH government has announced plans to outlaw the traditional siesta.

The laws, if approved, would see the Spanish finishing work at around 6pm, more in line with the international community. Traditionally, the siesta was implemented to help manualworkers during the hottest part of the day, but, as the country becomes less agricultural, many have argued that the practise is outdated and unnecessary. Whilst many workers in Spain already follow the traditional 9-5 working practise, particularly if working for multinational companies, there are also those that follow the split shift, which can be from 8am until 2pm, and then back to work at 4.30pm until 8pm. Spain’s Acting Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, put forward the proposal, believes it would have a positive impact on productivity, which is notoriously low, and also help with a better family life. Many schools in Spain also operate a split system where pupils break for a long period at lunchtime and then return to school until 5pm, although this is now increasingly being changed, as schools introduce an 8am – 2.30pm day. The changes will affect many families who utilise the siesta period to do their shopping, or have the children home for lunch. In addition they will now have to consider additional childcare costs if family members cannot help.

BRITISH CONSULAR teams around the world have again been bombarded with requests for help across a range of bizarre issues. Staff find their time taken up dealing with odd calls rather than genuine emergencies – bacon, butlers and nudists all making it to this year’s top 10. One man was worried he might encounter nudists walking through Spanish streets; another homesick expat asked where he could buy British bacon; while a lady wanted help in hiring an English butler. Foreign and Commonwealth Office Minister James Duddridge said: “Our consular staff are a helpful bunch and do an amazing job helping out Brits in trouble around the world – but it is important people remember they are there to help with genuine emergencies and not as an alternative to telephone inquiries.

I urge people to think before picking up the phone.” Over the last 12 months, nearly half a million calls were made to the British consulate service; which provides emergency help to Britons in trouble overseas. The vast majority were from people genuinely needing help and the foreign officer helped deal with numerous cases; including 3,250 people being hospitalised, 4,770 people arrested and the families of 3,670 people who died abroad – and almost 38,000 replacement travel documents were issued. In Spain, more than 13,000 telephone inquiries were made in the past year. A quarter of these could have been resolved if the callers first searched the information on www.gov.uk. The most frequent calls – for which there is a host of infor-

mation online – were about passports, getting documents legalised, and registering births, deaths and marriages. However, nearly 2,000 of the calls were categorised as ‘lifestyle’ questions, adding to the collection of highly unusual requests gathered from around the world.

Drug smugglers jailed by IAN ASKEW

TWO DRUG smugglers, a Spanish national, and an Italian, who were caught in 2014 aboard a yacht off the Murcian coast, transporting drugs from South America, were sentenced to six and seven years imprisonment respectively, and given fines of 51 million euros each. They trafficked 607kg of cocaine from a South American. The first defendant sailed from the Spanish port of Águilas, in Murcia, on March 22, 2014 for the island of Gran Canaria, where he waited for the arrival of the second defendant. They returned four months later, and it was discovered that the boat was carrying 607 kilos of cocaine, valued at 20.4 million euros. The judgment was issued by the Provincial Court of Murcia. The court ordered the forfeiture of the vessel, a 13 metre, 11 ton yacht, a car and the impounded drugs.

PIG SICK POLICE IN Alicante were called on to make an unusual arrest – a Vietnamese pot bellied pig crossed with a wild boar.

An inspector and four officers took 90 minutes to capture the 70kg specimen that had wandered into the Botanico de la Avenida Orihuela in the city. The animal gave in peacefully and a unit from Seprona – the Guardia Civil’s nature and wildlife unit – armed with tranquiliser

darts were not needed. And while the incident ended peacefully, police warned local residents of the dangers had the animal become agitated; especially with young children playing in the area.

Underwater stash An OFF-DUTY Guardia Civil officer discovered an illicit stash of drugs whilst diving off the coast of Pilar de la Horadada.

He was diving in coastal waters when he found the bundle of hashish around a kilometre from the coast. The alarm was raised and divers from the Guardia Civil’s underwater recovered the bundle weighing appound16 kilos, with an estimated value of 26,000 €. The consignment was thought to have been submerged for some time as there was significant damage to the contents; however, they were later destroyed.

Firefighters found her alive on a landing inside the property but despite efforts to revive her, emergency services were unable to save her life. The first rescuers on the scene were unable to access the home because of the intensity of the flames until the fire brigade arrived. The cause of the fire is being investigated. Three other people were treated at the scene for the effects of smoke.

DEATHS OF cats in Pilar de la Horadada have been blamed on a feline disease following laboratory tests on a number of the animals’ bodies. The town hall’s Department of Health was alerted to the unusual number of feline deaths in the urbanisation of Pinar de Campoverd. Initial complaints led to suspicions that the feral cats had been poisoned - either deliberately or by secondary poisoning. However, the results of the tests have indicate cats “died of disease or common flu,” Samples were sent to a veterinary clinic within the municipality and also to the Department of Social Health Sciences located at the University Murcia, which has a specialist veterinary medicine unit. And after conducting the tests, the department reported that none of the dead animals had shown any signs of toxic substances. The Department of Health later advised when colonies of animals were very numerous without vaccination “diseases proliferate faster.” The council said it conducted a thorough control scheme of the colonies of cats, noting its scheme complied with regulations. “Those that are castrated and those left free in the same colonies, are all under the compliance of Trampeo, Esterilización, and Retorno (TER)”. Pilar de la Horadada´s Councillor for Health, Maite Valero, said that the government team: “Worked with protection agencies and in addition to controlling the number of colonies that exist, they try to keep them in optimal condition”.

Navantia finishes hull of the first extended S-80 class submarine By Ian Askew THE NAVANTIA Shipyard in Cartagena this week announced the completion of the expansion work of the pressure hull of the first S-81 Plus submarine, the ship showcasing their design and construction work for the new fleet of submersibles for the Spanish Navy. The work on the pressure hull is a consequence of the re-design of the boat, making it almost ten metres longer, with a greater displacement capacity. And the boat will benefit from increased dive duration, ground attack capability and high automation, with a much smaller crew relative to the S-70 class of submarines. The design and construction of the S-80 class is a complex engineering project, according to a spokesman from Navantia. The problems that have arisen during the last three years have resulted in complete restructuring of the project, the re-design of the boat and a thorough overhaul of the Cartagena shipyard’s working procedures. The company stressed the importance of the project for national defence, the technological reputation of Spanish shipbuilding; and, finally, the industrial and technological impact Navantia Cartagena has for the entire Murcia region. It is anticipated that the S-81 can begin sea trials in 2018.

Ten Million euro drug seizure GUARDIA CIVIL officers have seized hashish with a street value of more than ten million euros in Burgos, northern Spain. More than 1,600 kilos of the illegal drug was found hidden inside a truck travelling from Malaga to northern Spain, following an ongoing operation operated by the Guardia Civil. Three members of the drug running network, aged 36, 53 and 68, were arrested. All three are Spanish nationals and were living in either Azcoitia (Guipuzcoa), Durango (Vizcaya) or Logroño (La Rioja). Operation “PARRALAZO” had for several months been monitoring the criminal group following the discovery of evidence from a previous trafficking arrest. The information related to a lorry driver who could be using his vehicle to move hidden drugs from Morocco to the north of Spain. The information even included that the driver was very adept at using safer routes for transportation and charged up to 30,000 per trip. OBSERVING the lorry driver, officers were able to also identify two other members of the group who liaised with the Morocco partners in the illegal business. The drugs were sent to Malaga via speedboats and then stored in a rented warehouse until the truck driver could make the collection and headed to the north of Spain. Detectives monitored the network members as they met in various coffee shops in Malaga, ironically where the criminals used false number plates and security personnel to ensure that any law enforcement presence was not following them. The lorry was intercepted on the AP -1 in the municipality of Quintanapalla (Burgos) and the driver along with his two support vehicle drivers were all arrested. When officers searched the lorry they found 50 packages of hashish hidden behind a consignment of cans.

ALICANTE IKEA TROUBLES CONTINUE THE Swedish company Ikea is considering renouncing the plans for a store in the city of Alicante.

With ongoing disputes between Ikea and political parties in Alicante as to the best location for a store in the city the company is discussing internally whether to withdraw its plans for a commercial centre in Rabasa. In October 2015 Ikea announced that it would build its store in Rabasa or not open a branch at all in Alicante. The director of the Swedish multinational expansion to Spain, Asunta Enrile stressed that the company signed a “runner” with the promoter Enrique Ortiz in 2009 on a plot of Rabasa and that the “location” and “visibility” was the only option that the company planned in the province. Enrile had ruled out alternatives like Elche and Benidorm. The new store project of 250 million euros would create about 4,000 jobs, direct and indirect but the stumbling block seems to be the installation of an annex macrocentro. Many local businesses are opposed to the macrocentro and the implications that it would have for their trade.

Copper theft on the increase by IAN ASKEW

51 PEOPLE were arrested in the Murcia region during 2015 for stealing copper. The Policía Nacional and the Guardia Civil have, between them, recovered over 230,000 kilos of this material and dealt with 22 crimes related to its theft. Nationally, arrests totalled 1,024, and more than 2,500 tons of this material have been recovered, while controls, at recycling centres and scrap yards have been tightened. The Interior Ministry, on Tuesday, revealed statistics for last year, with a total 5,388 criminal offenses relating to copper in 2015 alone, compared with just over 11,000, in the five year period from 2011 to 2014. By region, Andalucía has the highest level of criminal activity, particularly in the province of Seville. Among the most important operations against copper theft, operation Pivot resulted in 16 arrests in the region of Tomelloso (Ciudad Real) and the recovery of 1.5 tons. In operation Timu, security forces arrested 14 people in Hospitalet de Llobregat (Barcelona) for theft of AVE infrastructure, at electrical substations and photovoltaic installations. One of the more recent operations, Cuprum, ended with the arrest, in Valencia and Madrid, of 13 people of Romanian origin, who allegedly committed 24 robberies in electrical substations and stole cable from

Adif, with damage estimated at about one million euros, and causing considerable delays to passenger and freight trains. Indeed, in July last year the Ministry of State Security launched a plan to respond to these crimes at a national level, requiring the stepping up of security measures at all stages of the cycle life of copper, from manufacturing to the end of its usefulness.

RIDERS ARRESTED

HORSE RIDERS were arrested after a clash with police in Elche for disturbing the peace in an incident allegedly triggered by alcohol. The disturbance took place in a central square on Sunday and was watched by astonished customers relaxing at cafe and bar terraces. Seven riders rode into the square and National Police arrived; needing reinforcement from Policia Local colleagues to take breath tests on the riders, said to be unable to control the animals. And moved to a quieter location a fight broke out in which two police officers received minor injuries. Two riders and a partner of a third were arrested.

Museum sets sail THE GOOD ship ‘Pascual Flores’ could sail the Mediterranean coast as a floating museum and tourist attraction to promote Torrevieja. Plans are underway to have the schooner – owned by the local authority - travel the coast and dock at ports with a banner carrying the name of the resort. Torrevieja council has set down its ambition to have the ‘Pascual Flores’, which is anchored within the port with other vessels owned by the city hall, converted into a floating museum and an attraction for visitors; while raising the profile of the city. The boat, an example of a fleet of sailing ships that once travelled the globe carrying salt and other materials, was said to be an ideal ambassador. Councillors are also investigating the possibility of attracting European Union funding to enable the Pascual Flores to also function as a base for marine research or to help develop outreach facilities. However, there is first a need to repair the hull of the schooner as several leaks have been detected. Another problem is the need for new masts; replacements using the same wood could cost as much as 180,000€ each. And it was said using municipal coffers to fund these important repairs would be “inconceivable”, according to the town hall. The town hall is currently investigating whether there are other options such as using synthetic materials to replace the masts and advice is being sought from a marine company in Cartagena.

News from afar Birds of a feather CLIMATE CHANGE is causing bird populations to take to the wing and change habitat, according to scientists. An international study based on data collected by volunteers across Europe and the United States of America can predict where populations of a species will alter. It shows for the first time climate has a similar impact on common species across large areas of the world. And researchers have published their results in the magazine ‘Science’; using population-predicting models and data collected by bird-watchers. Led by scientists at Durham University, a team developed models that related each bird species habitat to long-term climate patterns as revealed by records from 1980 to 2010. The researchers could predict where numbers of a species would increase or decline. Dr Stephen Willis explained: “We had this amazing data set collected by volunteers over decades – where people have gone out and counted birds across different countries in Europe and the United States. “We can use this to see to what extent our predictions match what people are finding on the ground.” An increase in temperature benefits some species, allowing them to increase both their range and population but will be less suitable for others – and overall, the same trends were discovered across two continents. Dr Willis added: “One important thing is that we are looking at the most common birds – these birds are doing a lot of good in the countryside – eating crop pests and helping our ecosystems work. So we need to know how they respond to change.” In Europe, birds such as the wren is on the increase in northern areas as winters become milder but are declining in southern countries. The American robin has declined in southern states but increased in the north. It was said the help of thousands of volunteers, termed ‘citizen science’ had produced “compelling evidence” to show similarities of climate change across the two continents despite the differences of landscapes, geographic barriers, and vegetation.

I realise at a certain age the only bits that don’t hurt are the bits that don’t work, but failing memory is the real bummer. Gentlemen the early signs are there when you don’t ‘zip up’ after a comfort break & the next stage is you don’t ‘zip down’ before the comfort break. The daft thing is I can recall stuff from 7 decades ago. At 3 years old I learnt to fly by pushing a coin into an electric socket – BANG! Friday April 14th 1950,the first edition of the Eagle comic – Threepence. We lived in a two up, two down, and one around the back terraced house – number 2, Western Road, Eastbourne. Next door at 4, the Brown Brood &this is not an ethnic slur, it was their name as in “Mrs Brown you’ve got a lovely daughter” and she did, Eunice was her name, my first crush. How about K-e-y-n-s-h-a-m? Yes good old Horace Batchelor and his fool proof pools forecast. Even this dullard worked out that if it was such a nailed on certainty you’d be minted employing the Batchelor method – why didn’t Horace use it himself and save on advertising with Radio Luxembourg, 208 Station of the Stars? Which is where I first heard ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ (HMV Pop 182, dragged that from 60 years back). Heigh-ho, back to the memory freeze. It hit me a few years back when I was working at the BBC and was at a function and met Kate Adie, who I was convinced had worked at Radio Brighton with me in the early ‘70’s. “No” said Lady Katie, rather frostily to my mind as if working on local radio with me was pretty low down her food chain. It was rumoured Kate was a tad feisty. She could go to Switzerland,who haven’t had a punch up in 200 years (and that only lasted 3 months), and turn it into an instant battle field. That’s how she got the War Correspondent gig – Chaos Kate & Wars ‘R’ Us. With this in mind I didn’t pursue the issue. By the bye Kate, we are of the same age and maybe it slipped your memory of your time at Local BBC Durham & Bristol, but fair play, not Brighton. Back next week- if I remember my quill.

IF YOU have a mortgage or a personal loan with a bank and have had problems making the payments, it is possible that your bank will have sold your credit to a third party, otherwise known as a vulture fund. Normally the bank performs these assignments when it understands that the credit is a risky one, or will be difficult to collect. They are normally massive assignments (i.e: many loans are transferred together), and sold for a much smaller amount than the amount actually due on the loan. Generally, this assignment is often bad news for the debtor because these funds are held by specialist companies with great experience in debt collection, they are usually more aggressive in negotiating, claiming, they are more difficult to reach when you need to contact them, and they often refuse to put the proposed agreements in writing, etc. Occasionally however, these assignments by the bank can present very favorable and positive consequences for the debtor, because legally, provided that certain requirements are met, the debtors may be able to extinguish their debt by paying the assignee (new owner of the credit), the amount paid for the debt by the new company to the bank, which will usually be much lower than the money actually owed, plus interest and costs. Thus, Article 1535 of the Spanish Civil Code states that: “If a litigious credit is sold, the debtor has the right to extinguish it, reimbursing the assignee the price paid, the costs caused and interests of the price from the day it was paid. It shall be considered a litigious credit since the claim is answered. The debtor may use their right within nine days from the time when the assignee claims for the payment. “ For the debtor to be able to exercise this right of “re-purchase “ and extinguish the debt, it must be a litigious credit - debt, ie,one were there is no agreement in place, and the debtor must have presented opposition to the claim. There is a very short time window for action however, only 9 days. It is true that these strict requirements have been somewhat relaxed by some judges and courts in Spain, but they are still not easy to meet. Therefore, if you have a debt with a bank, and you have been informed that the debt has been transferred to a third party, it is possible you could be released from the debt by paying the new creditor what they paid in acquiring it. This would normally be much less than the amount owed to the original creditor. Although the requirements to benefit from this legal possibility are difficult to fulfill, it is worth checking to see if it is a possibility, because the money to be saved can be significant. Well yet again it has been proved that there is one rule for us and another rule for them, by them I mean the 1% that are super wealthy, politicians, or large corporations. Governments, tax authorities, journalists and experts on tax evasion and avoidance on Monday were digesting news, of a major leak of confidential and reportedly revealing documents from a Panamanian law firm. Some are calling it the biggest leak of confidential information ever to hit the global financial services industry. The news is expected to make uncomfortable reading for those who have been arguing that new regulations and disclosure laws have been at last putting an end to the use of so-called tax havens by wealthy people and companies keen to hide their assets from authorities. In its online report, the BBC says the leaked documents “revealed how the rich and powerful use tax havens to hide their wealth”, as well as to help its clients to “launder money, dodge sanctions and evade tax”. Those mentioned in the report are UK Politicians, current heads of governments from across the world, dictators, celebrities and the super-rich. Even David Cameron is under pressure to reveal if his family still has cash in tax havens after it was revealed his late father Ian ran an investment fund that never had to pay tax in Britain. But worse was yet to come it has also been revealed British-owned or London-based banks were revealed to be at the heart of the Panama tax scandal. Leaked documents show that HSBC, Rothschild, Coutts and UBS - all giants of the banking industry - are among the top 10 banks who asked Mossack Fonseca to set up 15,600 offshore companies. HSBC, Britain’s biggest bank and the second largest in the world, helped set up more than 2300 offshore companies, according to leaked documents. Private bank Coutts set up almost 500 offshore companies over the past 40 years, Swiss Bank UBS, whose investment bank is based in London, asked for 1,300 offshore companies for clients. TED TALKS (Technology, Entertainment, Design), is a non-profit organization of conferences which aims to elevate ideas and share them. Started in 1984, Ted Talks spread like wild fire throughout Canada, USA, with guest speakers including Bill Clinton and Bill Gates. Berklee College of Music, in Valencia City, will be hosting its 3rd, independently organized, Ted Talk event, on Saturday, April 16th, at 4pm. The Ted Talk theme for this event is “Connecting the Dots”. Talks are all given in English and they vary depending on who is giving them. All the guest speakers are movers and shakers, and many are graduates of Berklee, or affiliated with it. Speaker, María M. The miracle of love

TRUE LOVE never quite runs smoothly in classic Gilbert and Sullivan operettas but in ‘Ruddigore’ it does have miraculous properties.

Calpe Gilbert and Sullivan Society is busy rehearsing April’s performances in Alfaz del Pi and Calpe and getting used to the unusual nature of one of the love stories running through the show. Dame Hannah (Sue Burgess) and Sir Roderic Murgatroyd (Mike Donovan) are madly in love until their wedding day

when the bride discovers the groom is the ‘bad’ Baronet of Ruddigore and not a suitable husband. The dame leaves him and Sir Roderic sadly dies without reconciliation. In Act II, the baronet returns as a ghost to sing the famous song ‘When the Night Wind Howls’- and then, in a typical Gilbert and Sullivan twist, is brought back to life to be reunited with Dame Hannah for a happy ending. Ruddigore is being presented in concert form with linking dialogue to tell the story, although the cast appear in full costume.

And once again, the society is performing to live music with pianist Kirsty Glen and performances will be conducted by musical director Aileen Lightfoot. Tickets are available for both performances of ‘Ruddigore’; on Wednesday 13th April at the Casa de Cultura, Alfaz del Pi and on Thursday 21st April at the Salon Blau, Calpe. MORE AND more expats and Spaniards are now growing ecological vegetables on a small scale. In theory a few vegetables as well as herbs can be grown in pots but what we normally regards as pots are not very successful in the summer in Spanish gardens once temperatures rise above twenty five degrees, and especially if located in full sun all day long. So immediately think about moving up in size to 55 or 65 centimetre diameter builder’s buckets. With these, if placed in semi-shaded areas of the garden, you will be able to grow and harvest a wide variety of vegetables 365 days a year. This is what I have now done for some years after giving up our large allotment, huerto, outside the village when thieving, windblown weed seeds once most of the campo was abandoned around us and a major increase in the cost of water made it mad to continue. In practice I introduced the ideas of ‘Ten-tub vegetable garden’ launched in our book ‘Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain’. There have been many benefits as described below. Twenty one proven benefits 1. Small space required - You can build up a circle, square, oblong or row in one bucket units of just a quarter of a square metre. 2. High yield per square metre – Close planting works well and you have no unplanted areas and

paths to worry about. 3. Speedy harvesting – If you chose vegetables regularly used and co-locate the salad and ones for steaming for instance daily or twice daily harvesting takes just minutes. 4. Relatively inexpensive – If you hunt around builders buckets are not expensive and second hand ones can be used if located. 5. Little waste as number of plants controlled by your space. 6. Co-located salads close by – all the year round. Genuine 0 kilometre naturally grown produce. 7. Accommodates small and expansive plants 8. No space for weeds – if one plants close to give shade to roots. 9. Easy to use mutual mulching- for instance lettuces around aubergine plants. 10.Easy soil enrichment – just make good initial soil/ compost/manure mixes and top up between crops. 11.Low water wastage – no sideways losses to dry earth. 12.Circular support frames for tomatoes, peppers and beans etc for strength 13.Rare insect and fungi attacks – no major area of vulnerable crops. 14. Yes this expanded small scale vegetable growing really does work and not only in gardens but also in small patios and on apartment terraces. So give it a go by starting with just two or three buckets of closely planted salad plantlets for spring and summer consumption and then expand to produce the vegetables for the autumn and winter especially for the Christmas table, including new potatoes. When deciding what to grow do take account of the healthy vitamin and mineral contents of each vegetable. I would rather eat a daily and weekly mix of natural ones than artificially produced ones in a mix of vitamin pills. My book ‘Living well from our garden Mediterranean style’ includes a list of the benefits of many vegetables, fruits, herbs, edible flowers and tree leaves. MY LAPTOP IS UPSIDE DOWN Hi Auntyvirus, I have an ASUS N61J laptop. I updated to Win 10 recently from Win 7 and since then my picture on a video call with skype is shown and received by a contact as upside-down. I’ve Googled the problem and was told that ASUS had put their camera in upside down and win 7 corrected the picture for skype. They stated that ASUS had no plans to correct things for WIN 10. There were a number of fixes quoted but nothing that I attempted worked. Do you know of this problem, and if so could you give me “dummies” guide on how to fix it? FAULTY PC

Hi, I have a Vaio laptop about 7 years old which recently says “ Operating system can’t be found” also when I eventually got some response by continually pressing F2 immediately I switched it on I got a message saying “your computer has a fault contact your supplier” I bought this new but it did not come with reboot discs that I can find. Many thanks, Richard Reply: “Operating system can’t be found” usually happens when the PC cannot find the part of the hard drive it needs to to boot up. The data should still be there, but the “instructions” to tell the PC how and where to boot are missing. There are some tools around that can help fix this, if you are feeling confident. Most PCs come with either recovery disks, or a recovery “partition” on the hard drive. You access this by pressing an “F” key during boot, and it takes you to a wizard, where one of the options should be a recovery mode. If this seems a bit too technical, then seek a local computer shop.

I am 14 years old, and everyone says I have talent and that I should go in to show business. I particularly want to do stand-up comedy, singing and impressions. I assume you are taking every opportunity at school to join in on drama activities, plays etc. This is a great place to start. Secondly, look outside of school for things such as singing and dancing clubs for young people. If there is no money or help from your Mum and Dad, then think about getting yourself a part time job and financing things yourself. Alternatively, you could ask around at school if any other students would be interested in starting a theatre group, and put on small shows for the community. Finally you could consider busking as an outlet for your talents. Check with the local authority that you are not breaking any by-laws though.

life&leisure #whats on  Rescue centre ﬁght to keep neglected horse by PATRICIA THOMPSON A HORSE, so thin he was labelled a “walking skeleton”, has won the right to remain in care at a Rojales rescue centre, after a three-week battle over his ownership. Oscar was officially seized in December in a joint operation between Torrevieja Council and the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, but his former owners later mounted a case to reclaim Oscar, despite their history of neglect. Torrevieja Council engaged an animal rights lawyer and negotiated with the previous owners, and, last week, received a verbal agreement for Oscar to remain in the rescue centre’s protection. However, the former owners refused to sign any legal documents. Centre co-founder Sue Weeding said, “While this sounds like we’ve won, legally, nothing has changed. The owners could still try to claim Oscar back again later.” The vet’s report stated that “malnutrition, along with multiple orthopaedic problems, prevent the use of this animal as a working horse for animal welfare reasons”. “Many people have contacted us about the horses, donkeys and even dogs kept at this property, near the San Luis salt lakes. They are often kept in really bad condition. Last March, one starved and extremely dehydrated horse actually died before we could save it. If Oscar was returned to these people, we feared he would not survive.” Sue also expressed concern at the police’s decision to grant

Oscar’s former owners written permission to visit the Rojales rescue centre earlier this year. “We’ve responded to a call for help, as we always do, and then they’ve invited these people into our home.” Sue said. “Since the attempt to claim Oscar, we’ve felt Before like we’re under siege. THE FABULOUS brass band, Just Brass, performed for a 400 strong audience, at the Rojales Theatre, in a concert sponsored by Avalon Insurance. There was also much comedy and laughter during the very popular annual event. A raffle was held and the monies raised went to Paul Cunningham Nurses Charity. A cheque for 500€ was presented to Tricia Lee, fundraiser for the charity. The charity would like to say massive thanks to the band members, Avalon Insurance and all the volunteers who took part on the night. The monies will go towards nursing care for those who have been diagnosed as terminally ill.

Great Easter Sunday Racing by patricia thompson EASTER SUNDAY was the second race day in SAMM’s spring series, There were two races, of 4 laps each, with the cruisers starting 10 minutes before the dinghies. In race 1, Sirocco and Mistral went over the line together bang on the start signal and, after the first lap, were only 20 seconds apart. Shoestring Cuatro and the Hartley crossed the line together right on the dinghy signal, and exchanged the lead over the four laps. Shoestring Uno had reefed and then lost time shaking it out. The start gate proved to be a magnet and, by the 4th lap, the boats had to dodge canoeists, a dozen Polish windsurfers, and four CAR boats loaded to the gills with children. In a very close finish, Shoestring Cuatro won by a few seconds. By race 2, the wind had started to change, which resulted in the first lap taking twice as long as in the first race. However, after two cracking starts, the wind picked up to 15 knots, and lap times were cut to about 18 minutes, finally resulting in another win for Shoestring Cuatro. Medieval Fair in Lliber ON SATURDAY 9th and Sunday 10th April, the picturesque village of Llíber will be turning back the pages of time, to hold its second Medieval Fair and Market, with lots of artisan and craft stalls, food and drink, music and entertainment, throughout the day. There will be workshops and free rides for children, something to appeal to all ages, so go along and enjoy the atmosphere of Medieval Llíber.

Suzi4fitz Show “Dances Through The Decades” LOCAL FITNESS and dance instructor Sue Gibson, and the ladies of her Suzi4fitz group are nearly ready for their charity show ‘Dancing through the Decades’. It’s almost time for the full dress rehearsal, and then, all the hard work will come to fruition with the show itself, which will take place on Wednesday and Thursday April 13th and 14th, at Los Montesinos Music School Auditorium. This is a variety show, with dancing and singing through the various decades. A special guest is the popular vocalist, Paul Allen, and the show will be compèred by the excellent magician Graeme Mykal, who will be performing some of his fantastic magic onstage. Make sure you get your tickets for a great evening of entertainment, all for a great cause, with proceeds going to Social Services in Montesinos to help disadvantaged families in the town for Christmas 2016.  What do a group of teenage lads in Cornwall have in common with US rock band Foo Fighters? The lads have a group called ´Black Leaves of Envy´ and when the local council cancelled their rehearsals because of noise, they wrote to the Foo Fighters, and singer/guitarist David Grohl only took up their cause. He wrote a lengthy letter to the said council, snippets of which are “My name is Dave Grohl, and I’m writing on behalf of the local group Black Leaves Of Envy,”… “they´re having difficulty functioning within the current noise restrictions” … I ask you reconsider the restrictions put upon the volume of their private rehearsal space.” Top Geezer!

I´m pleased to inform you that Aardman Animations, who were responsible for ´Morph´ on the BBC way back in 1977, are re-working the children’s show and its set for a comeback to energise the chuckle muscles of the young-uns … and us grown up young-uns as well. Its due to air on Sky, and Luke Bradley-Jones, Brand Director of TV Products, explained “Not only will there be new animated adventures for Morph and mischievous Chas, there will also be shows presented by Aardman staff which could help kids create and animate their own characters.” Lovely Jubbly. Thanks to the magic of the internet I was recently able to find and start watching the wonderfully funny ´The Jerry Sanders Show ´ and was extremely saddened when the star of the show, Garry Shandling, passed away last week. His innovative style of comic acting was admired across the comedy spectrum, and after that fashion, friends of Garry gathered for a game of basketball in his honour saying “we had a long-standing tradition of Garry hosting a game every weekend at his Mandeville Canyon home, so his friends decided to play one last game there.” Cool.

I brought Whoopi Goldberg here a month or so back saying how feisty she is, especially when re-negotiating contracts with big TV corporations, but she´s here today for a singularly different reason. Speaking to US Today she told them about her new marijuana company that can genuinely beat the pain of severe stomach cramps. Talking about the Whoopi & Maya collection she said “I want to go nice and slow with this, I’m excited for people to feel comfortable using cannabis, the items range from balms, tinctures, bath soaks and sipping chocolates all infused with the drug. Vivien Leigh is making an Exhibition of herself

TWO OF the greatest movies of all time are ´Gone with the Wind´ and ´Streetcar Named Desire, ´ and they both starred Vivien Leigh who won Best Actress Academy Awards for her portrayals of Scarlett O´Hara and Blanche DuBois respectively. Vivien was born on the campus of St. Paul’s School, Darjeeling on Guy Fawkes Day 1913, and sadly passed away aged just 53 from tuberculosis. Vivien was not only a fine actress but one of the great beauties of her time, something she often referred to as being a handicap when it came to the roles she played being taken seriously. London’s Victoria and Albert museum recently purchased Vivien´s archive from her grandchildren that include costumes, sketches, photographs and scripts, and Keith Lodwick, V&A exhibition curator, said “Vivien Leigh remains an enduring icon of stage and screen and the objects on display provide a fascinating insight into her personal life and career.” For those of you who love these kind of exhibitions it will be held in National Trust property Nymans in West Sussex, the former family home of Leigh’s favourite set and costume designer Oliver Messel. Nikki Caxton, exhibition organiser, said “Many of Vivien Leigh’s costumes will be on display, including a Christian Dior gown from Duel of Angels and the headdress Messel made for her performance as Cleopatra. You will also be able to see letters from Dame Judi Dench, Bette Davis, Tennessee Williams, Sir Winston Churchill and the Queen Mother; the collection has not been exhibited publicly before and contains more than 100 pieces from Vivien´s Gone with the Wind archive.” It doesn’t come any more spectacular than this folks? ´Vivien Leigh: Public Faces, Private Lives´ will take place from 1 June to 4 September. Time to visit that secret stash and go treat yourself! We´re all aware of how many famous peeps have indulged in the odd extra marital thing-a-mi-jig, and when this parent child thing pops up, in most cases it slips on by unnoticed. Not so for William Shatner who´s alleged son Peter Sloan claims the actor is his father and has filed a $170 million lawsuit accusing Shatner of libel, defamation and slander, as well as demanding Captain Kirk consents to a paternity test and is asking for a jury trial! AAHH!! Beam me up Scotty!! Sloan, a 59-yearold radio show host in Florida, alleges the actor got his mother, actress Kathy McNeil, pregnant during a tryst in Toronto. AAAHHH!!!

Secret Cinema had some serious teething problems when they began in 2011, but got it together in 2014 when they launched ´Back to the Future´ screenings and set it in a life-size recreation of the 1950s Hill Valley town featured in Robert Zemeckis’s film. The secret part of their name refers to the fact that they keep the location of the upcoming event a ´secret´ until a few days before the date, scary stuff, but what we do know about the next event is over the middle 2 weekends in July and that they´re building a Kellermans Holiday Resort … Yep! Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

People Words It’s very easy for language teachers to get stuck in ruts. An example of this is with “people” words. We always teach the words of jobs (profesor, abogado) and members of the family (hijo, abuelo). We might throw in a few extras like “vecino” or “compañero” and that’s as far as it usually goes.

However, the language is full of other “people” words which are more commonly used than one might think. We had better start with the words for “person” and “people” which have their own little quirks. “People” en masse as it were, is in fact a feminine singular word in Spanish “la gente”. Therefore it behaves like all feminine singular words when placed in a sentence. This means that “a lot of people” is “mucha gente” (feminine “mucha”) and “people think” is “la gente piensa” (“piensa” in the singular). The word for “person” is “persona” and this is also feminine. This means that if we want to say something like “Pedro is a great person” in Spanish it remains grammatically feminine, like this “Pedro es una persona estupenda”. There are other feminine people words which obey this rule which seems very strange to English speakers. Another example is “la victima.” We might hear something like this on the news: “el padre de la familia fue una de las victimas”. The opposite of “victima” is a word that also appears from time to time in the news “verdugo”. This basically means “tyrant” or “executioner” but nowadays is often used to describe a person who victimizes or abuses another in a particularly dreadful way. Before we leave criminal matters, the general word for “criminal” in Spanish is “delincuente”. The Spanish word “criminal” refers specifically to someone who murders or physically harms another person, whilst the general word for crime is “delito”. Just thought you might like to know that. There are many people words which link individuals to where to live. We have already seen “vecino” which as well as neighbour can also mean “local resident”. “David Villa es vecino de Langreo en Asturias” for example. We also have citizen, “ciudadano” (literally a resident of a city or ciudad) and “paisano” (resident of a country). “Paisano” can also mean “compatriot” or “fellow countryman”. Sometimes a Spanish person will say to me “Ayer estuve con un paisano tuyo” (“I was with one of your fellow countryman yesterday”). This is usually followed by: “Se

llamaba John o Jim o algo así. ¿Lo conoces?” (His name was John or Jim or something like that. Do you know him?) As you will have discovered from your “job” words, we sometimes change the endings of verbs and add “-dor” or “-dora” to give us the person who does something, such as “limpiador” (cleaner). This works for non-job words too, for example “jugador” (player), “pensador” (“thinker”), “vendedor” (“seller”) “comprador” (buyer) “seguidor” (follower) or simply “trabajador” (worker) . In each case you can just add the letter “a” at the end to turn the person into a female. You might want to try out a few more of these, although they don’t always work. Sometimes the “dor” or “dora” ending refers to a machine “ordenador” (computer, from the verb “ordenar”) “lavadora” (washing machine, from the verb “lavar”). There are many more where these came from and also an interesting way in which the Spanish use adjectives to make people words. More of that next week, I’m sure you can’t wait.

San Vicente Moors and Christians THE MOORS and Christians festival in San Vicente del Raspeig, Alicante, reaches its climax this weekend.

The fiesta, which is held every year in honour of their patron saint, San Vicente, began on Tuesday 29th March and concludes on Sunday, with a grand open air dance in the Plaza de España at 10pm. On Saturday 9th April, there will be a parade of the Fiesta Queens, with a pipe and drum band, followed by children’s entertainment in the plaza. Is your home earthquake proof? (Final Part) Is it obligatory to apply the Spanish Seismic Norm (NCSR-02) to all new construction and buildings which are rehab or extended. The architect may under his own responsibility apply other seismic criteria on his design, but the minimum standard shall be that of the Norm. In other words all new buildings or major reform projects must take into account the (NCSR-02) Seismic Norm as a minimum benchmark. Costa Cálida and Costa Blanca as the most hazardous areas. In the Norm there is a highly illustrative seismic map of Spain that shows Costa del Sol Costa Cálida and Costa Blanca as the most hazardous areas. These areas are really located approximately around the provinces of Granada, Malaga, Almería, Murcia and Alicante. The map also provides the socalled basic seismic acceleration (a characteristic value of the horizontal acceleration of ground surface) and a coefficient that takes into account the influence of different types of earthquakes envisage on each of these areas during a period of time. In areas where the expected acceleration is very low, the regulation exempts seismic standards to be applied (the lowest seismic zones are located around the centre of Spain). All buildings designed under this Norm will endure an earthquake in better conditions than expected because in the calculations, we architects apply high safety coefficients which place the structure on to the side of security. I believe that obviously there is an extra expense in designing an structure taking into account the Norm but it is not that much if the structure is thought out from the initial concept design of the building. A symmetric form will help absorbing the whipping effect of a tremor more so than a building without symmetry and many times we are free to choose ay form in our design. It seems that the attempt to reduce costs was the reason that hundreds of houses allegedly built to earthquake standards collapsed like sand castles after the 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Italian region of Abruzzo in April 2009. Two six-story buildings situated in practically on the same Via Campo di Fassa, in the town of L’Aquila, demonstrated how the application of the seismic rules and use of appropriate materials saved lives. After the earthquake, one of the buildings remained standing, saving the lives of all the occupants. The other collapsed completely, killing 29 people. As reported later, many new buildings were constructed by mixing cement with unwashed sea sand, which did damage the foundations steel reinforcement due to salt corrosion. However if all countries comply with the existing earthquake norms, deaths would fall drastically, as it has been demonstrated in Japan, the country with best designed buildings against quakes. The buildings constructed under Japan’s strict regulations have withstood many earthquakes and have saved many lives. However Mother Nature seems to prove to us every now and then, who is in charge by sending new type of catastrophe for which we were not prepared.

Mediterranean meatballs 500gm beef or lamb mince 1 onion finally diced 1 garlic, clove crushed a pinch of dried chilli flakes (optional) 1 tsp ground cumin Handful chopped fresh parsley salt and pepper for seasoning olive oil for frying

Sauce: 1 onion finely, chopped 1/2 red pepper, diced 2 cloves of garlic, crushed 2 x 400gm tins of chopped peeled tomatoes 200 ml chicken stock. 1 tsp cumin 2 tsp sugar 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp chilli flakes (again I used smoked) salt to taste place all the meatball ingredients in a bowl and using your hands mix to combine roll into meatballs heat the olive oil in a pan and fry the meatballs in baches or 6 until nicely browned all round, set aside. lightly fry the

onions, red peppers, garlic and spice ingredients for the sauce in the meatball pan (with a drizzle more of olive oil) until softened about 5 minutes. add the tomatoes and the stock bring to the boil and then reduce to a simmer cook for about 10 minutes until slightly thickened add the meatballs back into the sauce and allow them to finish off cooking about 8 minutes depending how big your meatballs are.

WELLBEING FRIENDS is a new social network group being launched on the Costa Blanca designed to offer a helping hand in a friendly environment. The brainchild of Benitachell-resident Debbie Hull, the aim is to provide a forum where health and wellbeing problems and their solutions can be discussed. Her passion for helping people began in the UK where she worked in hospitals organising therapy groups relating to mental health and wellbeing. “I personally found from my own experience and observations that your personal wellbeing can impact on every aspect of your lifestyle and also your loved ones,” said Debbie. “I know how lonely it can be to face issues like depression or an ongoing mental condition alone. So, I decided to transfer all I had learned and my caring skills and launch the Costa Blanca’s first wellbeing network.” She added: “Wellbeing isn’t just about what is happening on the inside but how you see yourself and your ability to face the world in order to deal with whatever life throws at you.” The first speaker at Wellbeing Friends is Angela Zwaga. The former owner of hair dressing salon, once she sold the successful business, she chose not to retire but at the age of 56 train at the Style Coach Institute in London. Angela, who lives in Moraira and works as a style coach, said she learned important lessons about ‘personal beauty’ and said: “I had to learn to be honest with myself; it was time to realise my purpose in life and my worth and beliefs. “The course taught me to accept and appreciate my own unique beauty. My negative thoughts about my external image, upon reflection in the mirror, are now positive, colourful, youthful and happier.” And she will share tips on creating a wardrobe, de-cluttering clothes, colours, patterns and turning negatives into positives at the meeting. Benitachell Bowls Club BBC LIONS are champions of the north, after the North/ South playoffs took place last Monday. BBC Lions Northern League Squad, and a large group of supporters set off for Bonalba Bowls club on a day which did not look very promising but improved as the journey progressed, and, on arrival, the sun shone. The games went to the wire with BBC producing two

winning rinks. Top rink was ‘The Girls’, skipped by Lynda Warnes, with her team of Yvonne Browne and Linda Richards. They played a brilliant game with a final score of 24 – 14. The second great win of the day, went to skip Trevor Neale, with Janet Neale and Annie Jones, who held on to the last with a score of 16 – 15. Sadly, BBC were unable to secure the extra 3 points needed to win

the competition. Jean Cooper, president of the Costa Blanca Bowls Association, presented the BBC Lions with the Northern Trophy. San Luis Lions were then presented with the North/South trophy. The Northern League teams will have to look forward to next year in hopes of regaining the cup.

THE GRAND National takes place this weekend in what is being hailed as the biggest sporting weekend of the year. This weekend, avid sports fan have a choice between The Masters, two big boxing fights, elite cycling, premier league football and, of course, The Grand National at Aintree. This year will be the 169th Grand National since the first race took place in 1839, with horses and jockeys having to cover 4 miles, two furlongs and 74 yards to reach the finishing line. The race has thirty fences and, provided all horses are fit to run, a total of forty are expected to line up at the starting point. Whilst many feel that the endurance horse race is cruel and unnecessary, with 1 jockey and 80 horses having died since it started, the Grand National has 600 million worldwide viewers and Britain’s bet an estimated £500m on the day. The Spanish, who are a nation of gamblers, bet a higher proportion of their income than almost any other nation. It is estimated that the Spanish gamble well over 1.9 billion euros a year, equal to around 480€ per head or some 15% of the average net household income. Bearing

this in mind, it is surprising that only gambling sanctioned by the government can take place, hence bars playing a simple game of bingo, or running bookiesm are constantly being closed down by the police. There are legal ways to bet on events such as the Grand National in Spain, aside from the obvious online options, as improvements in technology have seen the introduction of new betting machines that are not dissimilar in appearance to a fruit machine. Many bars now have these machines, and one such example is the “Sportium”, owned by Ladbrokes, where you can literally place a bet on anything around the world. This year’s Grand National hopefuls include: Many Clouds, the winner from 2015; Silviniaco Conti; First Lieutenant; Wonderful Charm and Ballynagour, with the odds changing from minute to minute as to the favourite. Some who bet on this famous race often choose their horse because of the name or the fact that it is an outsider. Citroen C1 road test “IT’S THE same car isn’t it?” asks a friend as he looks at the Citroen C1 parked alongside the Peugeot 108. They even share the same glass tailgate and handles.

In the same way that a Terrier dog is one of many different breeds, such as the Airedale (my favourite dog), Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Yorkshire Terrier, Jack Russell Terrier etc., the Citroen C1 might share similarities with the Peugeot 108, but it is a quite unique car in its own right. It’s all about temperament and style. Firstly, while both are available in a choice of eight exterior colours, they are eight entirely different colours, and, like the 108, the C1 is also available in funky two tone colours. The C1 I am testing is finished in an eye-catching, and arguably feminine, Blue Lagoon with Caldera Black Roof. If you want a blue 108, it is available in Tahoe Blue, which is a much lighter shade. Again, just like its relative, the C1 is a city car, and the model I am testing is a three door hatchback. Both share the same 1.2-litre three cylinder lawnmower sounding engine, which needs revving hard to make progress, and, like the 108, the C1 is a great little car to drive. The model I test is fitted with black leather interior and, although it shares exactly the same black dashboard with its Peugeot counterpart, there is a striking white section in the centre, around the touch screen and around the air vents. Where the 108 I recently tested had a reversing camera, this C1 does not, and I don’t think it’s a great loss either because, although I find that the rear pillars do block my view a little, I don’t feel a reversing camera is necessary in such a small car.

There is a seven-inch multimedia touch screen system, which includes radio, Bluetooth, video player and onboard computer (like in the 108). Other little touches to set it apart from its rival are the distinctive alloy wheels and, of course, the Citroen grille. However, much like the Peugeot, the Citroen pleasingly incorporates chrome on its grille and wing mirrors. The reason why it looks so similar to the Peugeot 108, and, indeed, the Toyota Aygo, is because it is built in the same plant as both counterparts, with the engineering handled by the latter company. However, the new C1 is the most solid supermini from the French firm yet. The C1 was introduced in 2005, and Citroen has sold more than 760,000 of its superminis. “The firm has upped the quality the baby Citroen offers,” writes Parkers, the car experts. “You’ll also notice keyless entry, hill-start assist, climate control, heated seats, reversing camera and memory settings for the front seats on the standard and optional kit lists. Buyers looking for some personality with their C1 should check out the Airscape model, which boasts an electrically folding fabric roof that runs the length of the cabin, offering wind in the hair motoring without any of the scuttle-shake shortfalls.

Otherwise the C1 is available in three trims; Touch, Feel and Flair, with the 800mm x 760mm fabric roof Airscape option offered on Feel or Flair only. There are eight exterior colours to choose from, along with the option for that Airscape roof to be either Black, Grey or Red to contrast or match the bodywork.
