A word from JT

RTN IS delighted to be taking part in a new scheme launched this week by the British Consulate in Alicante using a team of Local Ambassadors to spread the word over how to succeed in Spain. The dozen people chosen to take part in the experiment (just don’t call them guinea pigs!) come from all walks of life and live in diff erent communities along the Mediterranean coast, sometimes known as ‘RTN land’. It was a proud moment for the paper to be invited to join as offi cial media partners to the campaign – we must be getting something right - and the guys at RTN Towers are feeling so chuffed they’re leaving the red, white and blue bunting up another week. Hopefully, we can all learn a little by using the experiences of the Local Ambassadors and avoid the stresses and strain of just stumbling along; over the weeks ad years there have been various stories in these pages about the serious upset people go through when Lady Luck suddenly abandons them. And in the coming year there will be a lot of colourful tales to tell, some only slightly censored, about how to get along in foreign parts; even if we are lucky to live in a country where the natives are friendly.

Enjoy the read! JT GOT A STORY?

Earthquake in Torrevieja TORREVIEJA HAS been hit with another earthquake this week. by Caroline Tyszka The mild tremor of 1.6 occurred at 4.35am on Wednesday 27th April whilst most were sleeping in their beds. It may have gone unnoticed to many although the National Geographic Institute reported that residents would have felt the tremor or a noise of “distant thunder.” The epicentre was in the lagoon of Torrevieja but people as far as Algorfa and Ciudad Quesada may also have felt the earthquake experts said. The micro quakes are a frequent occurrence in the Vega Baja.

Buffalo kills worker at Safari Park AN INVESTIGATION has begun following the death of a worker at the Aitana Safari Park in the Costa Blanca.

The man, aged 42, had been employed by the park to work on the complex, on Wednesday afternoon, he was savagely attacked by one of the buffalo’s which charged at him several times before dragging him several metres, killing him on the spot. The Guardia Civil centre for information (CICU) reported that it was not known yet which type of buffalo had killed the man and they would not confirm if he had stepped inside a restricted zone when the attacked happened. Although a unit from SAMU attended the scene they were only able to confirm the death of the man, who had clearly suffered horrific injuries during the fatal attack. The park had made no statement at the time of going to press, either about the circumstances in which the attack happened or what the future holds for the buffalo that attacked the man.

Elderly British nationals and son attacked in Thailand Three members of a British family were punched and kicked in an unprovoked attack in a Thai tourist resort.

The victims along with their son were left unconcious needing hospital treatment. The gang allegedly set upon the trio in Hua Hin during celebrations for the Thai New Year. It is believed the son accidentally bumped into a local thug resulting in the father begging the gang not to hurt him. CCTV footage was released by local police to find the attackers. Images show the family being beaten unconscious on the busy street. Onlookers reported that no one went to the aid of the brits who were said to have been set on because they were westerners. The Songkran New Year celebrations are also known as the Water Festival, when Thai families splash water on

each other as part of a religious ritual of renewal. A spokeswoman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) said: ‘Our staff have been in contact with the family to offer assistance and

will remain in contact with the local authorities.’ The local chief of police and the tourist authority held a press conference to confirm several arrests. Charges have been brought.

Expat in custody over resort killing A 45-year-old British man has been remanded in custody over the death of a friend following a drunken argument at a Costa Blanca resort. by JACK TROUGHTON

IT IS alleged that the expat – identifi ed as RG - punched 42-year-old victim TW on Javea’s Arenal Beach. He fell to the ground and suffered a blow to the head on Sunday evening. He appeared before a Denia judge on Tuesday and was remanded in custody. It is understood he admitted the outline facts of the incident but declared he never intended to kill his friend. RG was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter after handing himself in to the Guardia Civil in Javea following an appeal by his partner. In a statement, the police said he left the scene following the incident. The Guardia Civil said both men had been drinking with others in a bar and were clearly under the infl uence of alcohol. And CCTV cameras showed the victim “provoking” RG, who left the premises with his partner but was followed by TW who continued to try and argue. The statement said: “The victim got hold of

RG and swung him around in front of his partner. “The footage shows he (RG) freed himself and punched the other man in the face, knocking him to the ground, before calmly walking away with his girlfriend.” Emergency teams battled to save the life of the stricken man but were unable to revive him.

Taxman probes rentals

THE SPANISH tax authorities have launched an investigation of income derived from the property rental market. Money earned from renting out homes should be declared in the same way as income earned from foreign pensions or assets held abroad. And it is understood Spain’s Tax Agency will target websites advertising property for rent, including holiday lets, in a crackdown on undeclared income. It is not the first time the taxman has pursued landlords over rental income. In 2012, there were checks on houses declared as being empty but showing high utility consumption. It is estimated almost half, just over 49%, of all home rentals in Spain – around 1.3 million properties, are not declared to the tax authorities. The vast majority are rented out to third parties, some 367,000 provided free or at a peppercorn rent to relatives. However, whether it is to boost income or help pay a mortgage, officials maintain failure to declare the cash involved was ”fraud”.

CONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE TWELVE BRITISH expats have been formed into an amateur diplomatic corps to share their experiences of life on the Costas and help others enjoy the Spanish experience. The ‘Local Ambassadors’ team was unveiled at the British Consulate in Alicante on Tuesday with Ambassador Simon Manley launching a campaign aimed at helping people integrate. And RTN was chosen as the consulate’s media partner for the 12 month project because of the paper’s popularity along the coast from Valencia to Cartagena and its interactive website, Facebook and Twitter feeds. Over the next year, each of the Local Ambassadors will be featured in the paper and RTN will be following their adventures as they join consular staff attending outreach events designed to help integration into Spanish life. The idea initially came from British Consul Sarah-Jane Morris; who is responsible for Valencia and Murcia, the areas where the team has been recruited. The scheme will be closely monitored by other consulate teams across Spain and abroad as a way of getting people to help themselves – allowing the professionals more time to concentrate on emergencies. Mr Manley said: “Our Local Ambassadors have been there and done it, and we hope their experiences will help other Brits to enjoy even more life in Spain and what this country has got to off er. HAPPY “The general background is our sense that Britons should integrate more here to have a happier more secure time, whether that is registering on the Padron, learning Spanish, or working with charities.” He said it was important people did their research and planned ahead – all messages sent out by the government via its websites and social media. “I think for us, the people who have the most authority to speak about this issue are the people who have been through the experience themselves and learnt by doing it.” Mr Manley said it was a “new initiative”

and each member of the team had diff erent experiences and in diff erent ways had fi tted into Spanish life. “They have great stories to tell and great experiences to share. This is a novel way of getting across those experiences and sharing those messages.” Mrs Morris said as the area’s consul she met people like the Local Ambassadors and had listened to how they had faced up to the various challenges and made a “real go” of their new lives. “There are people who get through the challenges and have a really fulfi lling lifestyle here. The scheme is to showcase diff erent experiences with positive results,” she said. “We thought RTN would work well. Hopefully people reading it can relate to the stories and the areas involved – and picture the towns and experiences. The whole point is to put yourself in the shoes of other people and see your case is not very diff erent.” ADJUST Adjusting to a new life or planning ahead of a move from the UK were the secrets to living in Spain. It is hoped past experiences will help others avoid the pitfalls and avoid stressful problems later – such as health and isolation as people get older. It is hoped the Local Ambassadors can give both expats and potential new Spanish residents fresh ideas, point to shortcuts, and help spread information. “This is the most popular area in Spain for Brits wanting to move to the sun. Part of our job is to assist people when they need it, but even better is to help them avoid future diffi culties by doing the right things now,” added the Consul. “I hope our local ambassadors will enable expats to make more informed choices, and help them through all the things you need to do for a well-planned life in Spain.” The progress of the campaign and the team can be followed via www.roundtownnews.com, RTN’s Facebook page facebook. com/roundtownnews, and Twitter account @rtn_newspaper. The articles will also be shared with the British Embassy’s Brits in Spain Facebook page and Twitter account @BritsliveSpain. And readers can leave comments and questions via RTN and the consulate team will provide the right advice or correct any inaccuracies.

RTN Costa Almeria, the next step!

RTN is expanding its coast line coverage by an extra 200km next week when we launch our brand new edition, RTN Costa Almeria. This is a new and exciting prospect as most of the zones are untouched and we will be the only free English press providers. “We have researched these districts in exceptional detail to ensure major scope and easy accessibility for our readers” Peter Clarke, RTN General Manager said. The RTN Costa Almeria edition will have the same winning concept as our Costa Blanca and Costa Calida releases, with main focus on local stories and reports, scattered with ground breaking national and international news. Managing Director Daniel Wilkinson pledged “Growing is a sign of success, more expansion for RTN is planned in the very near future, we as a local community paper feel wherever there is an Expat there should be an RTN and we have fun along the way providing this service to our loyal readers”

Hopes for Orihuela high speed station Nigerian human trafficking

arrested Orihuela hopes that a station stop for the planned gang TWO NIGERIAN human trafficking gangs have been arrested in Torrevieja. The gangs, which operated between Cueta and Torrevieja spehigh speed train to Madrid will be approved. cialised in using women and in some cases minors for sexual exploiby Caroline Tyszka The AVE link to Madrid would mean that it would only take two hours by train from Orihuela, drastically reducing commuting times. The Minister for Development,

Ana Pastor, visited the area to see the progress of the works between Beniel and Orihuela, which gave the mayor of the town, Emilio Bascuñana, the chance to reiterate the desperate need for a station. In a statement to the minister Bascuñana said, “a stop at Orihuela would

meet the needs of the town and Veg Baja, and hopefully it can become a reality to help develop the town.” The journey between Madrid and Murcia is expected to take 2 hours and 27 minutes and progress is said to be going well with platforms, electrification and security installation.

tation. Guardia Civil officers have estimated that between the two criminal organisations over 50 women, many who were underage, would have been exploited through the network. The investigation began over a year ago following a complaint made by a Nigerian woman to the authorities in Malaga. She told officers at the time that she had been convinced to come to Spain but then was forced into prostitution to pay off her travel costs. When the officers investigated her complaints they discovered that there were many other Nigerian women in the same situation and connected to the two criminal organisations. Detectives arrested 30 people between the two groups and freed 18 women who were being exploited at the time of the arrests. 18 of the arrested were immediately sent to prison with no offer of bail being allowed. Amongst those arrested were five women who controlled the victims, one registered as being a resident of the UK and another residing in a caravan in Torrevieja. The victims were forced to work from seven in the evening until the early hours of the following day, only allowed to rest at their lodgings when permission was given by the traffickers, failure to comply resulted in beatings and threats to life and family members. The networks had a group of people dedicated to managing new collections and transfer operations to sexually exploit new victims. Both organisations lent money to the victims when needed and offered legal support when the arrest of one of its members took place. All monies were monitored heavily by the pimps with any client calls being monitored to ensure all earnings were accounted for. Once the money arrived in Nigeria, part of it was distributed among those responsible for the organisation and the rest went towards transporting new victims. Guardia Civil reports that the amount of money being moved was in excess of one million euros. Between the two organizations, they had complete control of the business of prostitution of Nigerian origin in the streets of Torrevieja, dividing the areas of prostitution and holding regular meetings to agree on prices to charge customers.

BHS on the verge of collapse by Caroline Tyszka THE POPULAR retail giant British Homes Stores (BHS) is facing a tough time as it went into liquidation on Monday. Over 11,000 people face losing their jobs as the high street chain failed to secure a £60m loan, but the stores will stay open as administrators search for a possible buyer. The company made a statement about its lack of ability to be profitable despite performing on average 1,000,000 transactions a week across 164 stores and 74 franchise stores across 18 countries. Last year the chain was sold by billionaire Sir Philip Green for £1 to a group called Retail Acquisions who have been in negotiations with Sports Direct to sell some of their stores. However the sale stumbled as the company did not wish to take on BHS’s pension debt. The first British Home Stores was opened in Brixton, south London, in 1928 and the group could be the biggest retailer to collapse since Woolworths disappeared in 2008. Sir Phillip now faces being quizzed by MP’s who want to question him about selling the chain for just £1 and the BHS pension scheme having a deficit of £571m although Sir Philip has offered to make an £80m voluntary contribution. Separately, the Pensions Regulator will investigate whether BHS’s former owners sought to avoid their obligations. John Mann, a Labour member of the Treasury select committee, called on Sir Philip to repay £400m of dividends that he took out of BHS. “Sir Philip Green and his family have made millions out of BHS and its hardworking staff. He took over a company with a healthy pension pot, yet when he sold BHS a black hole had appeared in its fund,” he said. “There is a very simple and honourable solution to this crisis: repay the dividends, live up to the name he has chosen for his new yacht, ‘Lionheart’, or lose his knighthood.”

British man caught posting Marijuana GUARDIA CIVIL officers have arrested a British man, aged 56, who was posting drugs to Germany from his home in the Granada region of Spain. The package, which was sent from Cáñar, a small village in the Alpujarras area of Granada, contained 17 vacuum packed plastic bags with over 300 grams of marijuana in each one.

Postal workers became suspicious about the destination address in Germany and alerted the authorities who then opened the packages at the nearby court house in Órgiva. The officers traced the parcel back to the sender and arrested him at his home address where they also discovered a vacuum machine used to seal goods and bags the same as had been used in the package.

Guardia Civil shut down designer drug factories THE GUARDIA Civil dismantled two organisations who dealt with designer drugs, arresting 52 people and seizing more than 130,000 doses of the new drugs known as SNP. The operations were based in Alicante and Almeria with the seized substances being categorised into two groups: “synthetic cannabinoids,” similar to marijuana and “synthetic cathinones” which can be used as a substitute for amphetamines, MDMA or cocaine. In the ALIMAYA operation, Alicante Guardia Civil became aware of the existence of a company based in the region which might be dedicated to

the production and distribution of synthetic cannabinoids. During their undercover operations they managed to identify a group of people from Belgian and Dutch companies who were dedicated to importing the new drug substances from China. Once in Spain these substances were stored and later sold on the Internet. The KOROWAY operation was in the Almeria area, and came about following an inspection in a “Grow Shop” in the town of Roquetas del Mar, where officers seized various types of cannabinoid synthetics and other types of SNP’s.

Following this inspection, officers discovered the existence of an organised group dedicated to the import, handling and distribution of such substances. The distribution and sale of these substances was carried out in stores like “Grow Shop”. The Spanish police worked in cooperation with the police in the UK, Holland, Belgium and Germany with the two operations “ALIMAYA and KOROWAY” being coordinated within the European Police Office (EUROPOL). It was also supported by the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS).

Don’t get ill after 3pm All-Out THE DEPARTMENT of Health has announced that local medical centres will not be open after 3pm during the summer. by Caroline Tyszka The Valencian government has said that during the months of July and August local health centres will only be opening between the hours of 8am and 3pm unless specific funding has been granted. A shortage of money for the health department is preventing the localised centres from being able to afford to pay staff to work in the evenings. The policy, which was originally implemented in 2012 when there were severe budget cuts, has been reaffirmed by the current regional ruling government with a spokesperson saying “the money needed to open the centres in the evening is higher and the number of patients who attend in the summer is lower, therefore the money is better invested in other areas.” Each medical centre can apply to the

Ministry of Health for authorisation of additional funding to open in the evening but this will not automatically be approved. The director for the Alicante General Hospital told reporters that they were

“doing everything possible to keep their centres open in the evening, particularly when facing emergency treatments, however they were still awaiting approval for the additional funding from the Regional Health Ministry.

doctors’ strike THOUSANDS OF doctors’ walked out Tuesday morning for a further two days of strikes against pay and conditions. At 8am on 26th April junior doctors’ began to refuse to even cover accident and emergency departments across the country until 5pm in the evening. The same occurred on the following day as an agreement failed to be made with Jeremy Hunt, the Health Secretary. The bitter dispute between the British Medication Association and the Government has seen Hunt accuse the junior doctors’ of “putting lives at risk.” In a poll the doctors’ had the support of 70% of the population despite thousands of operations and procedures having to be cancelled. The BMA defended the walkout, arguing that it would have called off the strike if Mr Hunt agreed to lift his threat to impose the new contract which includes working on a Saturday as a normal day. Some patients being treated during the two days said that they actually felt in safer hands as they had been seen by a consultant, who was covering for the junior doctors, and many hospitals reported that the public had heeded warnings to only attend A & E departments if it truly was an emergency.

Alicante fight forced to land in France by Caroline Tyszka

A RYANAIR flight bound for Spain was forced to land in France as “fighting Liverpool fans” were endangering other passengers. The flight from Liverpool to Alicante was forced to seek an emergency re-routing to Limoges in France on Thursday as two Liverpool football supporters began fighting. A spokesperson for the Liverpool airport said that the flight had no option but to land in France as the two drunken men were “considered to be a danger to others.” The flight carrying 180 passengers was able to continue its journey to Alicante. It is thought that the men were part of a group of supporters on their way to the team’s Europa League semi-final first leg against Villarreal. A police spokesman told local reporters that the men were both so drunk and aggressive that it was impossible to question them properly and they were arrested and taken to a local police station. Officers were going to have to wait until they had sobered up and a translator provided before they could be seen in court.

Everything in moderation New research shows that eating junk food along with a healthy mediterranean diet is not so bad after all! by PATRICIA THOMPSON If eaten alongside a healthy varied diet, fatty, sugary food has no impact on the likelihood of heart attacks. The research shows that the favoured diet of the spanish is the best for a healthy heart so the odd guilt-free burger or kebab can be enjoyed. Studies revealed of 15,000 people over 39 countries showed that there were lower risk of heart attacks when a diet containing fresh fruit and vegetables, oily fish and olive oil was introduced, although having said that, the European Heart Journal

highlighted that eating a fattier more western diet did not increase risks either. 15,482 people with heart disease with the average age of 67 were asked to fill out a questionnaire when they joined the study. Questions were on diet, including how many times a week participants ate meat, fish, dairy, whole grains, vegetables, fruit and desserts. They were then given MDS scores (Mediteranean diet scores)which ranged from 0-24 with more points awarded for those eating healthy diets. Researchers reported “We found that every one unit increase in the Mediterranean Diet Score was associated

with a seven percent reduction in the risk of heart attacks, strokes or death from cardiovascular or other causes in patients with existing heart disease,” said Ralph Stewart of Auckland City Hospital, University of Auckland, who authored the study. “In contrast, greater consumption of foods thought be less healthy and more typical of Western diets, was not associated with an increase in these adverse events, which we had not expected.” He continued: “The research suggests we should place more emphasis on encouraging people with heart disease to eat more healthy foods, and perhaps focus less on avoiding unhealthy foods.”

Rising Homophobic attacks rising Gay rights group Arcópoli have reported the rise in homophobic attacks in the Madrid region this year. 52 attacks since January have been reported which is on average one every two days average. The government delegate in the region and the Madrid Attorney’s Office say they are using everything at their disposal to combat these hate crimes. Arcópolis is asking for urgent measures to be taken.

London test Self-Drive Cars

Volvo hopes to have up to 100 of the vehicles on the streets by 2018 and are starting by offering self-drive cars to families in London to test from next year. Initially the cars and will transport passengers without a driver. In the case of bad weather the cars will be driven. Tests are in progress for an advanced driverless version in 2018. The Swedish carmaker said: “Drive Me London will begin in early 2017 with a limited number of semi-autonomous driving cars and expand in 2018 to include up to 100 AD cars, making it the largest and most extensive AD testing programme on Britain’s streets.” In Gothenburg, where Volvo has its headquarters, engineers have been testing the vehicle since 2014. Motorists in the town will also be given the chance to test the vehicles next year. GPS, a 360-degree camera and other sensors are used to “see” the road and avoid collisions. Transport times will be improved by the self- driving cars and reduce traffic jams, pollution and accidents. Legalities are unclear at this time regarding liability which currently lies with the driverThere are still legal questions over the technology at this stage. The Swedish giant is looking for partners to expand testing of the technology in China - where its owner Geely is based.

Off duty officer refused bail for road rage incident by Caroline Tyszka AN OFF duty Guardia Civil officer has been charged with homicide following a road rage incident near Madrid on the A3 motorway.

The officer driving a BMW, 31 year old spanish national Ángel Luis V.J, was involved in a collision with a Moroccan man driving an Opel Zafira, 39 year old Younes S, and an argument broke out between the two parties. As the BMW driver got out of his vehicle the Opel driver exited the scene, running down the road. At this point the off-duty officer shot the man five times, four times in the legs and a fatal shot to the head. The judge ruled that on this basis the accused would not be granted bail, and although he refused to speak in court it has been suggested that he told colleagues that he was only trying to defend himself as the man refused to stop. Officers attending the scene searched the Zafira and found a large knife which later tested positive for cannabis.

Costa Blanca terrorist attack reports unfounded British press reports over possible terrorist attacks have been causing worry amongst holiday makers in the UK who are set to travel Spain this summer. Guardia civil director general Arsenio Fernández was questioned about reports published in the British press over possible terrorist attacks this summer, Fernández assured the security forces work ‘from prevention, reaction and investigation’ and highlighted ‘what we must not do is alarm society’. He urged that the public should continue to live normally without the fear of terror. Reports have appeared with no evidence to back them. Police forces have their own priority lo-

cations, investigations are in process and we should avoid speculation. ‘No area of Spain is especially on alert, but I can say all of Spain is especially monitored’. Fernandez assured that the level for terrorism in Spain, after the discovery of the arms cache in Ceuta, has not been lifted. Alert remains at level four which is already extremely high. He believes that Spain has the experience of fighting terrorism due to suffering 50 years of ETA terrorism. The Director General affirmed that Spain, whilst not exempt from a jihadist attack, security services are working with social networks and via the internet for the detection of presumed jihadists recruiters and indoctrinators.

How To Trace Your Lost Pension Funds

29 APRIL - 5 MAY 2016

EXPATS COULD be missing out on funds for their retirement if they have lost the details of old pension plans MANY PEOPLE come to us asking about lost pensions. Fortunately, there are several ways you can fi nd them. It’s not always easy to keep track of a pension, especially if you’ve been in more than one scheme or have changed employer throughout your career. But, it’s important that you do claim your pension, so the sooner you trace a lost pension, the better. Many expats who have worked in the UK before emigrating lose details of what company pensions they have built up because they haven’t told their former employers their overseas address. Others simply forget about retirement plans they paid into during previous jobs. It is a major issue. Millions of us have paid into a personal pension, often only for a few years. Although pension trustees have a duty to keep in touch with members, with an ever mobile workforce it is easy to lose details, or for people to decide it is not worth worrying about.” Experts say Britain is heading for a “lost pensions” crisis with a predicted £750bn of dormant pensions by 2050 that could deprive people of thousands of pounds in retirement, based on government estimates. If you think you may have a “Forgotten” pension pot, or indeed a Frozen or Deferred pension, then we may be the people to help you trace this money. We would be happy to sit down with you and look at your options. Please give us a call on 965 704 338 or email us at:

Foreign residents needs ignored

Farm workers die in road crash

Concerns have been raised by the PSOE over forgotten areas of the Orihuela area, whos population is predominantly foreign residents. by patricia thompson The lack of pavements in certain key areas along main roads was raised by María García on Thursday with her asking for one of the most dangerous areas of the coastal zones to be made safer. Concerns were raised over the La Zenia to Villamartin road which still lacks any kind of pedestrian pathway on the Villamartin side of the AP-7. During the last administration a pedestrian footbridge was instated. She asked for funds to be provided within the 2016 budget to resolve this matter of public safety. Also measures for better signs and signals to improve road safety were requested. It was pointed out that it was not the only area of the Orihuela Costa in need of urgent attention. Garcia insisted and urged the coastal councillor to work with the infrastructure department to prepare a plan and technical study of all municipal roads in the coastal area. The coastal councillor, Sofía Álvarez who also holds the competencies for urban transport in the municipality, was critiscised by Maria Garcia for her lack of resolution in providing a bus service

A FARM van, carrying workers to start their daily shift, veered off the LorcaÁguilas motorway earlier this week, killing five of the occupants. The accident, which occurred just before 7.30am on Tuesday 26th April in the Murcia farming region, has also left three people in a critical condition at a local hospital. Police who attended the crash reported that after the van left the motorway it went over a bridge. They also reported that possibly the driver had lost concentration as the road was straight and visibility was good. The van was rented to an agricultural company in Torre Pacheo, Murica, and was carrying the Moroccan men when the accident occurred. Police report that the driver was amongst those killed. Whilst the full details of how the accident occurred had not been ascertained Francisco Jódar, Lorca’s mayor, said he “believed” the driver may have fallen asleep.

for the residents of Entrenaranjos Álvarez explained “we are waiting for response from the Ministry on the operation of the line” The service has not been put into operation as the local government are waiting for ministerial approval.

Drones help fight Mosquitos by Caroline Tyszka THE ALICANTE City Council are set to use drones to help with eliminating tiger mosquitos. Two drones will be flying over the Alicante region searching for the insects colonies and spying over houses during the coming months in a bid to tackle the increasing health problems that the mosquitos cause. The small aircrafts will provide the council with information such as if private pools are being well maintained and that residencies do not have standing water in their gardens. The company responsible for operating the system, Lokimica, use one small drone to fly over urban areas, which cannot be seen from

Bear Chase

On Monday a black bear, thought to be around 3 years old, led police on a chase through Los Angeles scrambling over garden fences and walls, climbing trees trying to escape capture in suburban LA. The bear, was spotted near the Los Angeles Mission College campus in Sylmar. Officials tried to capture the animal which led to an hour long chase over fences and through gardens. Weighing 125lbs, the bear was tranquilised and medically checked before being returned to Angeles National Forest unharmed. Students and staff at the college campus and close by residents in Sylmar were urged to remain inside during the operation.

Spain backing UK to stay A SURVEY revealed on Wednesday that 67% of Spanish support the decision for the UK to remain part of the European Union. The TNS study surveyed five countries within Europe and asked which way they would like the vote to go. Other countries which agreed with Spain were Germany with 78%, France with 60% and Poland with 54%. The results so far in the UK were 38% to stay, 34% to leave, while 28% were unsure. UK residents will go to the polls on Thursday June 23rd in what will go down in history as the biggest decision of generations. Predictions for which way the vote will fall at this moment in time is too close to say, with the other European countries predicting victory for the in campaign with exception to over half in France who predicted a Brexit.

travelling around in vehicles, and a larger one, which can spray a colony from the air. The small bug which has been in the news for causing the Zika virus is increasing in numbers within Spain as the Councillor for Health in Alicante, Sonia Tirado, said “this plague is here to stay.” Estimates are that up to 80% of outbreaks occur on private land as Noe Garcia, the manager of Lokimica explained. “We use the drone to capture images, if a disused pool is discovered the owner of the land is contacted,

if the owner does not respond the council can apply to a judge to treat the land and then charge them for the costs.” The mosquitos need to be caught in their lava state as each mosquito can lay over a hundred eggs. It will not just be the tiger mosquito that is the target of the drones as other species will also identified. The drones will also help with search and find missions tackling the increase of rats and cockroaches due to the higher temperatures experience this winter.

What a load of rubbish VILLAMARTIN RESIDENTS are angry over the growing problem of rubbish left to litter the streets – blaming a cutback in collections from bins. by Jack Troughton They maintain despite more properties being built, there have been no extra rubbish bins and a reduced collection service, with debris simply left behind. And hoping to highlight the problem, it was described as a “health hazard” and “inexcusable”. Sue Gell, who lives in Calle Gibraltar, contacted RTN and sent a photograph of litter in the street after the bin men had called.

“The photo shows the state of our road, after the bin has been emptied,” she said. “The problem is that there is definitely a cut back on the number of collections, and therefore people leave rubbish around the bin, which is obviously a health hazard.” And she said Orihuela council had “in its infinite wisdom” had allowed an extra 200 homes to be built in the area but failed to provide extra rubbish bins while cutting back the collection service. “Considering the extra revenue they are obtaining from this increase in owners, it seems inexcusable that we are being

treated in this manner,” added Sue. “It would be interesting to know who they expect to do the street cleaning.”

Gardens along the banks of the river Vinalopó in Elche have fallen into bad repair due to lack of watering in recent years. The councillor for the Palmeral, Antonio García of Elche city hall, explained that the gardens of Contador, Bon Lladre and Tomballops were watered from the Marchena irrigation canal until 2013, but this had ceased because water was filtering through the riverbank causing risks of a landslide. The problem had thought to have been tree roots but is now thought to be down to the bad condition of the canal. A council spokesman for Elche said “Now we are working against the clock and the gardens need water,” Surveys will be carried out to distinguish the correlation to the Riegos de Levante water supply instead. Elche town hall have assured this is a priority to carry out before summer 2016.

Buyer Beware I appreciate sometimes we do not like to stick to the rules and laws of the country where we live but often, if you buck the systems, it can land at your feet in a rather unpleasant way.

I have written repeatedly, and discussed on Bay Radio, the need to transfer your vehicle to the correct owner when you buy or sell. Until you do, the owner registered with Trafico will be totally responsible for the vehicle. Not a very pleasant thought when you think of a nasty accident, especially if the new owner has not insured the vehicle. The last owner on the log book is the person that all correspondence will be addressed to, including parking and traffic fines, tax and the ITV. It could also hit you hard in the pocket if you have an accident and claim on your insurance and, when awarded claim payments, these will legally only be paid to the owner of the vehicle and I can assure you that there is no way around this – they are the legal owner. In my view, it is not worth taking the risk of not transferring ownership title of a vehicle, which is also a legal requirement, of course. Continuing with cars, I understand in the UK there is a rather nasty scam regarding cheap car insurance. Just recently the police had discovered a number of vehicles uninsured. On contacting the owners, who had all the correct paperwork and proof of payment, it would appear that a company was taking clients’ money and providing full insurance paperwork and it was all fake.

The company did not exist, was not a bona fide insurance company – just a telephone, computer and printer with a recording running in the background of the office to sound like a busy, successful insurance company office, who just took the money and disappeared to another location. Be careful of cheap insurance premiums. As they say “Buyer Beware”. There is always a catch somewhere waiting to be discovered. It has come to my attention this week, that there is a very attractive young lady in the Javea area approaching men, who quickly discover that when she leaves they are missing wallets, jewellery or watches, usually items of high value. Be careful, guys you’re being watched. Javea today, Altea tomorrow and Torrevieja next week. Ladies, we are coming to the time of year when the supermarkets and shops will be easy pickings for thieves. Take care of your handbags, both inside and outside of the shops and when unloading your shopping trolley. It can be so distressing when your purse or handbag gets stolen and replacing your paperwork, licences and bank cards is a long and stressful process. Take care, there are a lot of thieves and desperate people about and, if you are on holiday, please be vigilant when leaving your villa or apartment, making sure you leave nothing of any value unsecured. I don’t know about you but I am heartily sick of hearing about BREXIT in both the newspapers and on the television. I find the continual discussion and increasing hysteria of what we should do, and the

scoring of points from both sides, very distracting from the real facts. Whilst appreciating that in some areas the EU is to say in the least is a little flaky, and some of their decisions take your breath away, in my opinion there is no alternative but to remain as part of the EU as the world is becoming an increasingly dangerous place to live. Surely Britain is better protected as part of the union than standing alone. Those days have gone and there is no point at all in comparing us to the US, Australia, Japan or other countries. We are, and have been, part of Europe for years now with a wonderful trade agreement. I suspect it is because we live outside the UK, that many of us see it differently to those living in Britain. I have listened intently for any discussions or arguments regarding the Ex Pats situation, of which there are many of us, but very little is said about us. One UKIP MP tried to assure us that we would still have the same privileges, especially for health care, if we came out. I don’t see that this will automatically happen. There will be tremendous uncertainty and turmoil which we will all be caught up in and it is going to take a long time for everything to be sorted out and settled if BREXIT happens. Maybe, in the long term, it could be the right decision, but I can´t see why the UK would wish to place themselves in a very uncertain future or why any Ex Pat would advise leaving the EU whilst living in Europe, is rather odd. I just wish I had the right to vote on such an important issue that will affect me personally.

Kisses strengthen the immune system and help to relieve pain According to specialists from hospital QuirónSalud Torrevieja, it has widespread health benefits. It is not a simple gesture of love, affection or respect among people, but kissing also has important benefits from the health point of view. Among other issues, it boosts our immune system and releases endorphins and hormones, such as dopamine and oxytocin, that help to relieve pain. The experts have explained “kisses release endorphins and hormones that cause this release from a point of view of improving health”. Endorphins increase our sense of well-being owing to its great pain relieving capacity and by stimulating the transmission of dopamine we may improve abilities such as memory. The wonderful experience of a kiss can leave an intense amnesiac imprint. Kisses make us feel more loved and therefore more secure and bold. Doctor Gemma Ramón, a General and Family Medicine specialist at Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja points out that, “besides, as we have mentioned, the list of ingredients that have been found so far in the saliva is long and continues to grow with numerous more functions such as to avoid us from getting choked with food, it is essential for the sense of taste and an indispensable source as a building element of the teeth, in fact it contains calcium and phosphate ions that occupy the spaces freed up in the crystal lattice”. Likewise, saliva contains substances that fight bacteria, viruses and fungi, and saliva exchanges that occur during kissing stimulates and strengthens the immune system to create antibodies. Saliva is an organic fluid mostly composed of water but also of carbohydrates, electrolytes, lipids, mucin, enzymes, immunoglobulins, amino acids, etc. “When we have a wound in the mouth, it gets cured five times faster than when it occurs in any other part of the body,” notes Dr. Ramón. How does this stimulation occur and what antibodies does it generate?, What benefits does it offer? It has pain relieving, bactericide, coagulant and cellular regeneration accelerator effects, it acts chemically at the cellular level and reactively at the C.N.S. (Central Nervous System) level. Even in terms of its chemical analysis, saliva contains certain properties that are of immune type, in addition to antimicrobial proteins and antifungal properties. It is considered a healing agent. Also, kisses have an important psychological component, as it “binds us with our equals, unites us with our family and makes us feel intimately close with our partner”. In this sense, kisses also help children to grow up healthy and confident: “During adolescence a certain rejection towards this displays of affection may appear, but we must not allow

ourselves to be deceived by this gesture, we still need love and affection in adequate doses of hugs and kisses”. Risks to be avoided Experts have warned that a good oral hygiene is required to prevent the development or transmission of infections through saliva, besides avoiding contact with people who suffer from any disease that is transmitted through saliva. In this sense, there are a dozen pathologies that may be transmitted through kissing, ranging from the most common with lesser impact (colds, cold sores, warts or cavities) to others that require more complex treatments and affect the health more seriously, such as mononucleosis, also known as the kissing disease.

Currencies Direct opens in Javea Big cats on the coast by PATRICIA THOMPSON

THE CURRENCIES Direct offi ce in Javea was offi cially opened on the 21st April 2016, and to mark the event, the team threw a party in the offi ce, with the offi cial cutting the ribbon ceremony performed by Javea town hall Councillor Doris Courcelles (Environment and Resident Relations).

Currencies Direct was founded in the UK in 1996 and has been established in Spain since 1999. As a leading foreign exchange provider, the company has continued to grow and expand, and now has twelve offi ces across Spain. To mark the occasion, the company invited clients from all across the region to come together and enjoy an evening of complimentary drinks and tapas. The party was a huge success with over 200 guests attending, and it was a great opportunity for people to get together, share stories and maybe even make some new friends. At the end of the evening, everybody left in high spirits and - more importantly - with full stomachs. Andrew Brown, the company’s Head of Eastern Spain, was delighted with how the event went. “It was a fantastic evening” he said, “ we were delighted to welcome both current and potential new clients from the local area to the

branch, as well as some of our business partners, to help us in marking this occasion”. Andrew also outlined the company’s aims: “We try to help our customers get the most from their overseas money transfers. Some of our customers need to make one-off payments, while others need to make regular transfers; whatever the reason, we get them bank-beating exchange rates”. Classical education THE CLASSROOM where a young William Shakespeare studied in Stratfordupon-Avon was opened to the public for the first time last Saturday – during celebrations to mark the 400th anniversary of the playwright’s death. It was opened to visitors following a £1.8 million lottery-funded restoration and during the work pre-Reformation religious paintings were discovered. Shakespeare would have attended the school from about 1571, when he was aged seven and continued lessons until he was 14 or 15. The upstairs room in the medieval guildhall and is owned by the King Edward VI School, a direct successor to the grammar school attended by Shakespeare. And the headmaster of the modern grammar school Bennet Carr said of the atmospheric room: “If I am on my own in there sometimes, the hairs stand up on the back of my neck.” There are no surviving records of pupils attending the school in the 16th Century but historians at Warwick University are almost certain it was the Bard’s school – his father John Shakespeare, a businessman and member of the local council worked downstairs. There would have been about 40 boys at the school, all taught by a single teacher. It was a classical education, with a strong emphasis on Latin and learning by rote. It was where Shakespeare encountered writers that would influence his own work and was his only formal education. It was also where he first encountered theatre. Travelling players performed in front of the council to get a licence to appear in front of the public and historians believe he would have attended with his father – among the plays was King Leir, an early version of the story that inspired Shakespeare’s King Lear, and Henry V, and the actors used costumes and music to dramatise the entertainment. Shakespeare, who wrote 38 full plays, would have studied Latin dramas in class and experienced the real-life courts and politics downstairs – giving a clue how his mind influenced.

Way out walkabout A FEW weeks ago we were musing on the death of happy hippy hitchhikers on our highways & byways. We assumed this was down to the expansion of budget travel & the gentrifi cation of Glastonbury. Can’t see Cara Delevingne standing on the A37 begging for a lift in a beat up VW Kombi Microbus. My weirdest hitch happened in Australia, circa 1965, travelling west to east across the country to Sydney. Just outside Perth a road train truck stopped & into the cab I leapt with a jaunty “G’day Sport” to be met with a guttural “Oh b******s.” The disappointed driver thought I was an attractive Sheila because I

had very long hippy hair and a rather long-limbed svelte fi gure back then. The mild expletive was about all the driver could manage in English because he’d just arrived from Hungary. Now my knowledge of Hungary amounted to Zsa Zsa Gabor one liners (when she divorced Conrad Hilton the founder of the hotel chain she said “ He was very generous to me in the settlement, he gave me 5000 Gideon bibles”) & footballer Ferenc Puskas (Mr. Rubik was yet to invent his cube). With no light hearted manly banter the 4,000 km’s, pretty much non-stop, was hardly the most appealing prospect for either of us. The Trans-Australian Highway crosses the Nullarbor Plain (which, Dear Reader, you as a fl uent Latin scholar will know means ‘No Tree’) and after the fi rst couple of hours marvelling at the immensity it becomes dull, dull, dull. The only excitement was when The Goulash Kid started to nod off and from

the passenger seat, I reached over and started steering the rig, while nudging him awake, which wasn’t as arduous as it sounds because we were on the stretch that runs some 150 km’s dead straight. About halfway through this riotous road trip we parted company and I hung a left and headed up to the opal capital of the World – Coober Pedy. This is where in 1956 the World’s biggest & most expensive opal was found ($A2,500,000/€1,700,000). Coober Pedy is Aborigine for ‘White man in a hole’ which is precisely what it was (still is?). This was Mad Max territory on steroids. Over half the population lived underground in the hole they were digging. A cobber of mine had become moderately rich opal mining, so the boy Ashley was giving it a go. Stupid boy Ashley - I was 6’4” working in a 5’x5’ dust bowl - I fi nished up a potless asthmatic Quasimodo. Phwoar! Ladies -attractive- huh?

Floor clause rates - Are you paying the correct interest on your mortgage loan? Dear readers, if you have a mortgage loan in Spain, it is very possible that you are overpaying interest. Literally thousands of customers have been adversely affected by mortgage fl oor interest clauses and many are not even aware of it. AS WE have explained on several occasions, a mortgage floor rate or minimum interest clause, is one in which a minimum interest rate is set. Even though the interest rate of reference of the loan decreases, the interest payable by the consumer never falls below the minimum fixed on the loan agreement (the most common rate of reference is the Euribor and currently stands in negative value, approximately -0.010%) . Although floor clauses are not illegal, they are causing a significant loss to most affected by them, since they cannot take advantage of falling interest rates. Many had no real knowledge about the severe cost from the economic and financial point of view that such clauses could cause them, (and in fact have caused them) when they originally signed for the loan. This is because banks showed an absolute lack of transparency when they did not explain to their customers the potential economic damage that these clauses could mean, those affected thought that they were signing a variable interest loan, when in fact they could not benefit from interest rates dropping. Usually these clauses are not highlighted, and remain “concealed, hidden in very extensive and difficult to understand mortgage deeds. For the reasons given above, the Spanish Supreme Court has repeatedly ruled in favour of nulling these contracts in judgments from 9th May 2013 and 25th March 2015. This means that if the bank did not inform you correctly regarding these floor clauses, then the chances of your success if you claim in court are very high. Now, the main question to be answered, is the extent of the retroactivity of the declaration of nullity. Although the Supreme Court has indicated that the bank should return overpaid interest from May 2013 only, many provincial Courts (Appeal Courts), including the Province of Alicante, are agreeing to ask the bank for a repayment of wrongly paid interest all the way back from the beginning of the loan. In this regard we expect the ruling of the Court of Justice of the European Union to arrive in the coming days, possibly on the 26/04/2016. We will analyse this judgement in a later article. Send us your mortgage loan deeds and your last receipt, and we will confirm you if you are affected or not.

How safe is your pension? WE HAVE all read in the press recently about the demise of BHS, but the most worrying part of the story is how this will impact UK taxpayers and BHS pensions. UK TAXPAYERS will have to cover the statutory redundancy pay of the company’s 11,000 staff. Based on previous failures, such as Comet, City experts believe the bill will top £40million.

At the same time, every worker in the UK who is a member of a company pension scheme will have to help fill a black hole estimated at £571million in the BHS pension scheme. This is because the Pension Protection Fund, which steps in when businesses collapse, gets its money through a levy imposed on all company schemes. Labour MP John Mann, who is a member of the Commons Treasury Select Committee, said: ‘Sir Philip Green and his family have made millions out of BHS and its hard-working staff. ‘He took over a company with a healthy pension pot, yet when he sold BHS a black hole had appeared in its fund.’ The Guardian has calculated that Green and his family collected £586m in dividends, rental payments and interest on loans during their 15-year ownership of the retailer. What is the pension protection Fund you may ask and what does it do? The Pension Protection Fund was established to pay compensation to members of eligible defined benefit pension schemes, when there is a qualifying insolvency event in relation to the employer and where there are insufficient assets in the pension scheme to cover Pension Protection Fund levels of compensation. What does it offer: 1) If you were retired and over the scheme’s normal retirement age when your employer went bust, and receiving your pension then the Pension Protection Fund will generally pay 100 per cent level of compensation. 2) If you retired early (except through ill-health) and had not reached your scheme’s normal pension age when your employer went bust, then you will generally receive 90 per cent level of compensation based on what your pension was worth at the time. The annual compensation you will receive is capped at a certain level. The cap at age 65 is, from 1 April 2016, £37,420.42 (this equates to £33,678.38 when the 90 per cent level is applied) per year. 3) When you reach your scheme’s normal retirement age, we will pay you compensation based on the 90 per cent level subject to a cap, as described above. With all of the above, payments relating to pensionable service from 5 April 1997 will then rise in line with inflation each year, subject to a maximum of 2.5 per cent a year. Payments relating to service before that date will not increase. What it doesn’t offer: Flexible drawdown, self-management, the ability to transfer. For all of you that are members of a Company Pension scheme , if you haven’t done so already , it is time to find out if the pension scheme is fully funded, that means it has enough money to cover its pension liabilities or if it is in deficit. If it is in deficit you need to know by how much, what the Company plans are to rectify this and most importantly how stable/safe is the company you work or used to work for. Is there a real possibility that company could fail? If so I would seriously consider transferring your pension out of the scheme if that is allowed. Dick Handscombe Holistic gardener and author

Sumptous summer sunflowers SUNFLOWERS ( HELIANTHUS) are majestic summer flowers and do especially well in Spain in reasonable soil, if one remembers to water them regularly. At first one thinks of the large single headed yellow flowers on stems up to two or three metres high that look like a summer sun .Growing a specimen as a child in a small patch , pot or school garden has been the stimulus for the start of a lifetime interest in gardening for many now retired gardeners. Such tall plants are not always easy to fit into a balanced garden layout. However there are now an amazing number of varieties available from dwarf varieties to the Russian Giants from Siberia. They can give valuable displays of colour and interest throughout the summer and early autumn and with luck beyond. SOME BENEFITS OF GROWING SUNFLOWERS Ten reasons for growing sunflowers immediately come to mind. 1.They are relatively easy to grow. 2.Their wonderful display whether you grow a block of tall varieties in the vegetable garden, medium height varieties mixed into a perennial /shrub bed or dwarf varieties grown in flower pots. 3. Long lasting cut flowers. 4.Flower heads that attract beneficial insects. 5.Supports for climbing beans in the vegetable garden. Or why not at the back of a flower bed ? 6.A natural windbreak for lower growing vegetables or annuals. 7.Seed heads that can be separated and sundried to provide seeds as an alternative to nuts or olives with an evening drink, adding to breakfast cereals or fruit ,or crushing to extract sunflower oil if you have sufficient. Make sure you eat them before the oil content turns rancid. 8.Seed heads left on the plant to dry can be cut off with a short stem and then tied to a suitable branch of a tree in the garden to attract and feed birds during the winter. Loose seeds can also be added to the bird table. 9.As a sprouting seed – soak seeds overnight. Cut the base out of a 5 litre water bottle, about 8cm deep. Fill with 50/50 soil and compost, dampen, lay seeds on top and cover with damp newspaper. Put in a sunny corner, but remember to keep the paper moist but not soaking. As soon as the seeds start to sprout remove the paper but continue to keep the soil moist. In a couple of days you will have green shoots two

centimetres high which you can cut off and add to salads for their flavour and high mineral content. 10.A good first seed for a children’s corner. We have also just read that a famous 16th century herbalist, Gerurde, found that sunflower buds boiled and eaten like globe artichokes with butter, vinegar and pepper exceeded the taste of artichokes - as well as stimulating a bodily lust! Something to try this summer, but with olive oil! VARIETIES TO CHOOSE FROM As already mentioned sunflowers now come in a wide variety of heights, leaf forms, single or multiheaded branches of flowers, and most importantly colours. Yellow, red, orange, bronze and cream varieties are now available in single or mixed hues. Unfortunately few seed shops and catalogues stock more than a few common varieties. For variety we have purchased seed for many years from the mail order catalogue of Chiltern Seeds(fax 0044 1229 584549,email <info@chilternseeds.co.uk,website < . Upto thirty varieties have been included in their annual catoloque. The following selection will give a feel for the range of sunflowers available. 1.Dwarf 30 to 45 cms. Pavino. Can grow well even in a 10 cm. pot .Develops a number of branches with a continuing display of 10 cm. flowers. 2.A little taller.40 to 60 cms. Little Dorrit.Asingle stem with 20 cm. yellow flowers around a dark chocolate centre. Useful for the front of a bed. 3.Mid height.120 to140 cms. Autumn Beauty. Branching stems of 15 cm. flowers in a range of artists colours bronze, lemon, mahogany, old gold and cream. 4.Tall.200 to 300 cms.

Earth Walker. An abundance of multi-headed branches of terracotta and reddish brown flowers. 5.Even taller! 300 cms plus. Uniflorus gigantus….why not call it Sky rocket? Traditional single headed large plate sized yellow flowers . With such a range of raw materials it is obviously possible to achieve a breath taking display. PLANTING SEEDS Plant singly in plant pots for planting out when 15 cms high or growing dwarf varieties to maturity. One can also plant seeds direct but inevitably one loses a few seeds to hungry mice and snails. Plant in a rich water retaining seed compost or garden soil. The addition of a tea spoonful of TerraCottem can help to maintain continuous strong growth. CARE OF PLANTS Although established plants can survive in dryish poor soil this only where there is deep soil that the tap root can explore searching for water. In most soils it is best to water and feed regularly to achieve maximum heights , number and size of flowers and size of seed heads . Apart from a little leaf rust sunflowers give little problem provided you establish strong young plants. Don’t over water seedlings as they can rot off. They do not like marshy conditions. Finally sunflowers do best in full sun but will tolerate semi-shade.

Invasion of privacy I have some information for you that might be of interest. Some time ago I sadly downloaded and installed Windows 10. I did not like it. I did not like the fact that you log on with your email address and your password; that to me was an invasion of privacy. I questioned Microsoft support about this and they said that was necessary because in logging on you were accessing your account. Another problem I had with Windows 10 was caused by the built in Microsoft protection, Windows Defender. It conflicted with my AVG Internet Security, MalwareBytes Antimalware and AVG Tune up. So I reinstalled Windows 7 Professional. After doing this I found I was still getting rubbish pushing me to Windows 10. I talked to Microsoft support about this and they admitted that one of their Updates KB3035583 contained software that pushed one toward Windows 10. The only way to avoid this update was to click onto Windows Update, cursor down onto “Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them”, click OK. This way you can avoid KB3035583. Do not leave the setting on ‘automatic (recommended)’. Regards Tony. Reply: Or you could simply use the tool at https://www.grc.com/never10.htm which does the removal of the W10 update for you.

Skype

Hi Aunty, I have a Gateway Laptop operating Windows Vista 32 bit. I always use Skype video & voice calling to contact the grandchildren back in the UK. On this visit when I try to sign-in I get the message “Sorry, we couldn’t connect to Skype. Please check your internet connection and try again.” I have the latest version of Skype installed and have no known problems with my internet. I contacted the Skype “Interactive Chat” and spent over 90mins with them, I’m no nearer to getting my Skype operating. Have you heard of any similar problems? I would be more than grateful if you could help me with a solution. Regards Geoff Reply: This could be the fact that you are using an old version of Internet Explorer, which Skype relies on. Or you have some settings in Internet Explorer which are conflicting. So first, make sure you have the latest version of IE installed, with all updates. Also, reset the Internet Explorer settings (go to internet explorer, tools, advanced settings and then click reset).

Passive Aggressive FOR SOME years now my mother-in-law has been giving me some very ill chosen and pointed gifts, for birthdays and Christmas. It started with a huge book on house keeping, then progressed to things like cleaning implements such as a broom and dusters. To begin with I thought I would ignore it, and it would wear off in time, but last year she gave me a book on child-rearing, and this year a book on dieting. It upset me so much. Should my husband have a word? This is called being ‘passive aggressive‘. Giving someone an unsuitable gift can be a person’s way of putting in the boot, without actually having to say anything. You have two choices; your husband can speak frankly with his mother, telling her you know what she is doing, or you can call time on gift-giving as a whole - say you are only going to be buying for the children in the family now - you don’t want to receive any more gifts, and you think everyone else should do the same.

Write to Sara in confidence. A pseudonym will be used if you wish. Sara reads all letters and can give a personal reply. Email your question to agonyaunt@roundtownnews.com or Sara is available for private consultations, telephone 650 054 467.

Have I won the lottery? I CAME to the computer and internet late in life, and am enjoying it immensely. Recently I received an email from the Australian Lottery, saying that I had won several million dollars. It also said that in order to release the funds, I needed to send 600 Pounds to the sender. I was overjoyed at the win, and told my friend who warned me that she thought it was a scam. I am cross with her and think she might be jealous. No genuine lottery organisation would ask you to send money to release more funds, so do please be careful. Unless you remember entering the Australian lottery and buying a ticket, I am afraid this does sound like a scam. I too have received these types of emails and I imagine everyone else does. Please don’t send money to anyone you don’t know, and especially someone who contacts you via the internet out of the blue. There are so many dishonest people out there, and the creation of the internet has spawned many of them. In this case, your friend was being a good friend!

Many have noticed that you have been on the defensive for some time, but unlike the others who fail to practise what they are preaching, you are following through, and it has brought things to a head at last. Be unafraid of confrontation as your courage of conviction will serve to carry you safely through. Venus enters midweek and showers you with the love and affection that you yourself send out in abundance to others. Just as you can be relied on to bring some tender love and care to those who need it, you need to know that subtle rewards rest in the special energies sent directly from her as the Goddess of Love. Ruling passions with achievement you deserve the very best right now! Mars calls time on the hapless and futile consequences of hesitation and delay, by teaming up with planet Ceres. Whilst Ceres takes time and motion into the equation this brings balance and timbre into the limelight where it can be appreciated and where it will best be needed. This is a time to change the way you work, and to take on the responsibilities which bring about your promotion. As the Sun sets on Saturn this is the end of the road for negativity and the trauma of stress forced upon you. Whilst the Cosmos sends you the appropriate messages to defend and protect you so too are things beginning to work very much in your favour at last. This two pronged attack intensifies as the Sun sextiles Neptune towards the end of a hectic week and the way ahead becomes obvious. The radiance of the Sun combines with the persistent energies of a winning Jupiter. You have long waited for the time to be right before embarking on a set of new skills in partnership with someone who has your interests at heart. Time is on your side, and this would seem to be something too good to miss, though you know it will bring changes all along the line. Rest assured time will tell you all you need. A financial corner puts pressure on you, but this is a wake up call and the problem could be solved if all concerned start to contribute into the pot. The midweek sextile with Neptune has put the cat amongst the pigeons, and urges a complete overview of your expenditure as a result. Money comes and goes but right now some finance has to work on your behalf so transparency can win out.

Venus is ensconced in your sibling planet of Taurus and veers towards Mars towards the end of the week. All is fair in love and war so they say, but you are not to be dragged into a situation that you may find you live to regret. Best to stall for time and to make a decision based soundly on what it is you want right now, rather than Email your letters to me at: kennycorris@roundtownnews.com making a compromise that may very well see you coming a cropper!

Diary

Mars starts the week basking in the Sun and ends it in an action with Venus. Whatever you do please hold your tongue even if others seem to be losing their temper. Both the Sun and Venus are concerned with you getting the very best deal, but this means keeping things well and truly under wraps, until it is time to spill the beans. It’s in your interest to keep Mum for all immediately concerned. Jupiter is calling in old debts, and after a midweek trine with the Sun it is time for you to put your house in order. This will act as a defence and work together with you in full support and in sympathy with your modus operandi right now. There are some bigger fish to fry, and the next phase will be fuelled by your immediate ability to see things outside of the box, and in your grasp. A busy week with more than its fair share of ups and downs, but nothing that you can’t or won’t be able to handle. This serves to show those who would seek to judge you that you are not to be messed with. It wasn’t you who made this mountain out of a molehill, but it will be your integrity and intuition that sees things safely through to a satisfactory and well deserved conclusion. Things had to get a lot worse before they began to get a lot better, but you can see that things are now going your way once again. However this is a time to have a good look around at whatever alternatives are out there. Planet Uranus is both fleeting and static and it yet it is far more than the luck of the draw that sees you heading in a completely new direction that both inspires and fulfils you. The Sun sextiles with your consistent planetary leader, Neptune this week. This gives you all the encouragement that you need to make a set of changes that bring you some freedom, and buy you some much needed time. You are managing to stay on top and you are holding everything together, but your stubborn energies are endearing and inspirational, and helping you to do a really great job!

Tune in to barbershop

Your never too old

by JACK TROUGHTON

STUDY CHAPTER and verse about singing at a free course ‘Learn to Sing Harmony in a Day’ being staged in Los Alcazares this summer. Organised by the Spanish Association of Barbershop singers (SABS), it is an ideal opportunity to get the vocal chords working to the best of their ability. It is a SABS mission to encourage more people to sing barbershop throughout Spain and this year it is running free workshops to introduce people to this unique style of a cappella singing. Courses already held in Elche and Orihuela were a resounding success and now offering people in the Murcia and Alicante area have opportunity to enjoy a day’ singing, ending with a concert for family and friends to show off what they have learned.

And there is the chance to gain invaluable experience from members of the Spangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus, SABS triple gold medallists and musical director Wendy Grant. “This is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to improve the quality of their voice and to learn about singing in four-part harmony,” said Wendy. “Those with lower voices are particularly welcome as, in our experience; they have often been told in the past they can’t sing, which is usually far from the truth.” SABS President, Lyn Baines added: “We will learn a new song together and in the evening

we will perform it for friends and family. Our method of teaching has been really successful both in the UK and Spain, and we are expecting an enthusiastic response.” The course is being staged at 11am in the Centro Municipal Las Claras, Calle Helena, Los Narejos, Los Alcazares. There are 50 places available at the event. Anyone interested in attending should contact Lyn by Saturday 21st May by calling 96 833 4527 or 96 857 4987, or email president@sabs.es. St George and England

MEMBERS OF the Royal British Legion Hondon Valley Branch enjoyed a celebration of all things St George at the April meeting. The red and white flag decorated the venue and ‘medieval’ games – archery, Tin Pan Alley, and ring the bull – enticed everyone to have a go. Every table was also called on to take part in a military challenge – building a castle from sugar lumps; compete with a turret, archway, and able to support two flags. In addition everyone enjoyed a quiz about England’s patron saint and the medieval era. Two teams shared the honours and the prize for sugar architecture. The raffle raise 130€ for the Poppy Appeal and members are already looking forward to the next meeting at the Finca Restaurant near Hondon de Los Frailes, with a meal and live entertainment. Dog owners will have to clean streets by Caroline Tyszka MADRID COUNCIL have ruled that dog owners who don’t pick up their pets poo will have to clean the streets. The shock announcement comes after the city hall decided that the only way to address the increasing problems of dog poo was to make an enforceable rule to take the owners to task. The scheme will be piloted in two of the cities districts which suffer more than others with street fouling. Police will offer the owners two options, either pay a fine of up to 1,500 euros or become a street cleaner for a few days. A spokesperson for the city council said: “there is still excrement in the streets, parks and other places despite repeated public awareness campaigns and the distribution of millions of free bags to collect dog poo.” Madrid is not the first city in Spain to take drastic measures in tackling the problem of dog poo, as last year Tarragona announced it would use DNA analysis of dog droppings to track down owners who failed to clean up after them. Another town delivered the dog droppings back to the houses of pet owners who left it behind in a box marked “lost property.”

U3A party U3A DENIA members and guests enjoyed a double celebration last Thursday to mark the association’s 10th anniversary and the 90th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The Casa de Cultura in Denia was busy throughout the day with talks given by many of the group leaders, including golf, art, dining and travel; and games including chess, cards and mah-jong were played and demonstrated. There was also a dancing display by the Line Dancing Ladies and a talk from the local Intercambio group, which is supported by the Town Hall. And the Director of the Children’s Care Home - which has

been supported by the U3A Dénia for over four years – attended to give a big thank you to members. The home was completely redecorated by a small group of volunteers from the U3A who gave of their time every weekend over some months; and there are continuing fund raising events held throughout the year to supply special treats for the children, with a family day out every summer and presents at Christmas.

A bit of slap ´n tickle from CJ?

FOR ME to tell you that Pamela Anderson has got back into the business, you would imagine bouncing breasts, flowing blonde hair and copious amounts of flesh would be involved somewhere along the line.

If I was to now tell you that Pammie has indeed made her way back into the business and that all she needs is a stage and a microphone you´ll start thinking she´s going to become a stand up comedienne … and how right you would be! Last week, Pamela walked onstage at the Gotham Comedy Club 208 W 23rd St, New York, and said “I’ve always wanted to try stand-up because I was inspired by all the great female comedians we’ve had: there’s Joan Rivers, Phyllis Diller, Andy Dick,” hey! hey! Then referring to the infamous sex-tape with her ex-husband Tommy Lee said “Did you see that Hulk Hogan got $115 million for his sex tape?... that pissed me off! … all I got were some stupid Motley Crue tickets “(Tommy Lee´s group!) Pamela Denise Anderson was born in Ladysmith, British Columbia, Canada in July 1967, and, aged 21 was pictured at a football match wearing a Labatt’s Beer T-shirt. Somehow the photo found its way to all the nationals and TV stations, and a few months later she appeared on the front page of Playboy, after which the ´Pamela Anderson´ gravy train was up and running. That gravy train kept pretty full for a while after she got the role as C. J. Parker in Baywatch, 92 – 97 which cemented her as the BOD of the 20th century in virtually every country in the world. Now almost 20 years and 2 sons later “Ladies and Gentlemen! … I give you Pamela Anderson who apparently is gonna make us laugh!” JOSS STONE, from Dover in Kent, had to put the brakes on her world tour cancelling shows in Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago and returning to England because her dog Missy got sick. “I was told she could have only a few hours to live,” said Joss “but luckily she made it through the night and they are now working hard to find out what is wrong with her,” no sad endings here. Joss made her first album ´The Soul Sessions´ in 2003 when she was just 16, and although her career has moved along at a steady pace, such a wonderful voice can only finally break through. Joss Stone - The Answer (Official Video)

WE HAD ´Bill and Ted´s Excellent Adventure´ in ´89, then in ´91 we got ´Bill and Ted´s Bogus Journey´ and that seemed to be that. All of 25 years later a script is written for Bill and Ted 3 and according to The Sun will be set in the UK and ´have a huge British feel´ as they time-travel through London and meet historical figures like the Queen and Winston Churchill. When quizzed about Keanu Reeves´ involvement actor Alex Winter (Bill) said “People always ask if Keanu’s doing it and I’m like, “No, I’m making a Bill movie, of course he’s in it! ... I can’t make a Bill and Ted movie without Ted!” That told em!

It’s been a long while since Katy Perry appeared here, but if you are hoping to read news of her singing career you´re gonna be disappointed. The tale concerns a convent on a piece of land in Los Angeles that Katy wanted to buy and how a group of nuns went head to head with her over the purchase. It all got pretty messy when the Los Angeles Archdiocese stepped in and blocked a nuns bid that was $1million more than Katy´s saying it was invalid. Sister Catherine Rose Holzman said “Katy Perry represents everything we don’t believe in, it would be a sin to sell to her.” Nasty Nun!

IT SEEMS there´s no limit to how far the modern filmmakers are prepared to go to get another ´flick´ out there, and as a result make mucho bucks for the producers. The latest in this sorrowful line of golden eggs to be laid draws in the emoji, with the film to be called ´The Emoji Movie, ´ a title that must have taken minutes to come up with. It’s being made by Sony Animations and the storyline centres on Emoji Valley which is situated inside a mobile phone and will follow a group of emoji going about their daily business! Really!! Already there´s a big internet push for the ´poop´ emoji to feature! IF YOU´RE planning to escape the frazzle season in August you could do worse than go to ´Countryfile Live´ at Blenheim Palace ´as the producers are promising ‘a full-on live experience with a bit of a festival vibe!´Amazingly the show hit epic heights in the ratings last year reaching 8.7 million viewers, higher even than The X Factor. My personal theory is that its success is because we hanker back to a time to when we were a nation of allotment owners. Presenter Matt Baker said: “We’re opening up Countryfile to the general public and allowing a hands-on experience for all those who watch and love the programme.” Who loves ya Mattie! I READ about Nick Nicolai the day after he appeared on Holland´s Got Talent and was reduced to a bubbling wreck watching the lad sing. At the time of writing it was quite rightly being labelled a ´Susan Boyle Moment, so I wanted to add this piece to the page to give us a chance to watch Nick sing again. I´ve added the link to a YouTube video, another highly emotionally charge item in which Nick tells us how he was bullied at school and how singing saved him from the torment. Reality TV finally showing its purpose. Nick Nicolai verplettert jury met talent (English subtitles) - HOLLAND’S GOT TALENT

Sports star siblings by patricia thompson Down Syndrome brother and sister Adam and Lucy Stewart returned from competing in the DSSF European Open Down Syndrome Swimming Championships at the Quays Swimming Complex in Southampton 16 and 17 April, both were representing Spain along with Nacho and Loli. Adam was entered into 9 events which included the 1500 meters coming 2nd and improving his time by 2 minutes and a PB, he won 6 medals ; 1 gold , 4 silver and 1 bronze ,overall he had 4 PBs, his gold was for the 100 butterfly. Lucy won a bronze plus a PB in the 50 breaststroke and PBs in the other 2 races. This was a great achievement as she had not been in the pool training very often be-

cause of illness and her other passion Flamenco dancing with Raquel Pena. All these PBs and medals is because of their dedication and the help and advice from Miguel (CDM) Carlos who gave up his free time to swim against Adam in training and there new ASA training coach Lesley Jackson who at her own expense and time was on the pool deck both days making sure all her training showed results. We cannot forget there mum Pauline and dad Greg for the time and dedication given too their training sessions. Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

Borrowed Words Just to finish off last week’s article about film titles, I missed out a real classic which I was reminded of the other day. The film in question is “Some Like it Hot”, which I daresay most of you remember, and which has always been very popular in Spain. I think I’ll let you try and guess the title and put the answer at the end of this article, for those who have enough self control not to look!

but nobody ever uses it nowadays.

We are still in the silly season, so I am not going to carry on with any serious grammatical stuff for a while. Instead, this week we’re going to look at words in the Spanish language that come originally from English. I think I can safely say they are hundreds, if not thousands of these, most of which pass by unnoticed by most people on a daily basis.

Many English words ending in “ –ing” have long been incorporated into the Spanish language, although they almost always change their English meaning slightly. For example “parking” for car park, “camping” for campsite, “piercing” which is the same in English, except that an English youth would say “I’m going to have my tongue pierced”, whereas the Spanish would say “Voy a tener un piercing en la lengua”. I know it doesn’t bear thinking about, but this is the world we live in. More and more these days we hear people talking about having “un buen feeling” with someone, which basically means they get on well together. Very trendy as well is to specialize in “marketing”, another concept not indigenously Spanish.

Here are a few of these anglicisms that are well incorporated into the language already, to the point where I imagine many Spanish people are unaware that they come from English. One of these is the meat “bisté”, which comes from the English “beef steak”. This is akin to “rosbif” which I will leave you to guess. It would seem that the British haven’t offered a lot more words of a culinary nature, but other very well established borrowed words are cheque (the proper Spanish word is “talón”) clip (meaning paperclip), cóctel, barman, sandwich and of course fútbol. Actually there is a perfectly respectable word for football in Spanish which is “balompié”

Now we come to a whole plethora of English words which have made an appearance in Spanish more recently, particularly in the media, both written and spoken. “Fan” is a very important one. There is an advert on the television at the moment which repeats the line “soy fan de …” (I am a fan of …). Some English words just sound rather trendy or sophisticated, for example, “jetset” referring to a certain kind of lifestyle, a side effect of which is “jetlag”. “La lista de bestsellers” is obviously of interest to the reading public whilst “el boom” is something we’re not hearing so much about that at the moment. “Miss” and “Mister” have their own special uses:

“Miss” as in “Miss World” which makes sense, but “Mister” is the name given to football managers, strangely. Vicente del Bosque is the best loved “Mister” around at the moment. Finally, some married people might indulge in “un affaire” which is really a French word, whilst in ordinary Spanish this is “una aventura amorosa”, or more colloquially “un lío de faldas” (an involvement with skirts). That translation sounds really old-fashioned and also reminds me that it is time to tell you the Spanish title of “Some Like it Hot”. It is “Con Faldas y a lo Loco” (With Skirts and Going Crazy). Yes, well, the film industry has moved on slightly since then.

Going towards a more ecological home The human race has been trying to be ecological since they started to shelter themselves using any local materials available at the time.

In Spain there are large differences between homes at north where temperature can plunge to a freezing -20Cº (-4º Fahrenheit) to temperatures in Seville for example where we can see luminous street sign displaying a scorching 50ºC (122º Fahrenheit) during midsummer. Houses on those regions differed tremendously in their constructions, forms and their orientations. At north windows of houses are installed with an orientation towards South in order to get light and heat. In the south regions windows tend to be smaller as there is more sun light and also most façades are painted white intending to reflect the heat and obtain a fresher interior environment during the sizzling summers. New materials and technologies. The difference between this form of construction and the current methods is that now there are new materials and technologies so that building can go one step further and be designed with little environmental impact. The latest approved regulations point towards this direction. One of them is the revision of the European directive (200291EC) on energy efficiency of buildings. The directive makes obligatory to meet minimum requirements for energy efficiency and supply accreditation with a certificate with validity not exceeding more than 10 years. This certificate was explained in my last week article for CBN. Homes built from 2019 onwards must be energetically self-sufficient. It will be required that all buildings that may commence construction from 2019 must be energetically self-sufficient and may not emit any harmful gases into the atmosphere. This

measure is expected to reduce to zero the energy expenditure of the new homes and reduce total domestic energy consumption. I personally think that this challenge will be very difficult to be achieved if not impossible although I hope to be wrong. It has been shown that the method that houses is built influences noticeable the way it increase or decrease the use of energy in Europe. The EU already verified that new houses consume between three and five liters of fuel in heating per square meter of built floor area per year, that consumption rockets up on old homes with poor or none existing insulation to 25 liters of fuel per year. The new Spanish Building Regulations “El Código Técnico de la Edificación” (CTE) adopted in 2007 replaced the previous regulations on thermal insulation, dated back to 1979, when energy saving was not as a serious problem as it is now and the consumer was not so demanding on environmental quality of housing. Triples the requirements for acoustic insulation. The new regulations on noise insulation compared to the previous, triples the requirements for acoustic insulation in new housing projects. But that is not the only change. The greatest novelty of the CTE is defined as a series of demands that the architect must fulfill covering all the elements in the construction, from the foundations to the roof. In many cases, these changes materialize in issues that are not always perceived by the user, as it is the case of thermal insulation in walls. Another outstanding issue in the new code affects ventilation. As we all know houses have been ventilated since immemorial times by opening the windows. However, now the way of life has changed and building materials have also changed. Windows can be hermetically closed and it is no longer an exception that a home could remain closed for days, weeks and even months, without allowing a any air getting in, which affects the amount of pollutants and pathogens bacteria that

are accumulated indoors. Ventilate whether you like it or not. To ensure ventilation of buildings, the CTE forces new homes to incorporate a system of permanent ventilation that allows air circulation even though the home is closed. Other requirements are based on a greater thermal insulation, the obligation to take advantage of solar photovoltaic panels and in the fulfillment of minimum energy efficiency requirements. The CTE does not say how to do it exactly, what it does it establishes the conditions which are required for new houses regarding temperature comfort, moisture, sound insulation, or ventilation, among others, so it is in the hands of the architect to study each case, taking into account the location, the climate and other environmental facts, and providing the solutions to meet those requirements. However, only new projects with building licenses that have been applied for after 2007 must comply with these standards. It is expected that new buildings consume between 30 and 40 less energy and reduce CO2 emissions, between 40 and 55%. These savings can be higher in the future. Proof of this is the European directive that aims to build self-sufficient buildings from the energy point of view. An example of this is a project, developed by a consortium of construction and technological companies together with several universities, and with the support of several Regional Governments, the European Union and the Ministry of Education and Science are proposing that new buildings should save more than 80 and 90% on conventional energy by the usage of passive solar systems based on bioclimatic architectural design and the use of solar energy systems together with the use of biomass energy. To demonstrate this, it is possible that five pilot buildings are built in different Spanish towns with very different climates such as Asturias, Soria, Madrid and Almeria. Something I look forward seeing.

Grilled salmon with ginger sauce

One of the best things about salmon, other than its numerous health benefits, is that it cooks so quickly. If using a fish basket, you may turn the fish once, halfway through cooking time INGREDIENTS 2 8 oz salmon fillets 3 tbsp dry sherry 2 tbsp soy sauce 1 tbsp sesame oil 1 tbsp fresh ginger, finely minced 2 tbsp butter 1/4 tsp freshly ground pepper lemon slices

DIRECTIONS 1. In a shallow glass dish, combine the sherry, soy sauce, sesame oil, and ginger. Place the fish in the marinade for 30 minutes. 2.Preheat the grill, and brush the grids with vegetable oil. Dot the salmon with butter, and grill on MEDIUM - HIGH for 10 minutes. The skin should easily separate from the fish when it is cooked. Place the salmon on a platter, garnish with fresh lemon slices and serve.

NATURAL SOLUTIONS are at the heart of the next meeting of Costa Blanca Wellbeing as the group continues to draw a growing audience. By JACK TROUGHTON ANN MATHER is the speaker on Tuesday 10th May at the Quo Vadis Restaurant in Javea as she underlines the importance of diet with a talk called: ‘How to Avoid MT and HRT Naturally’. Doors open at 10.30am for an 11am start and the 5€ entrance includes a tea or coffee with a healthy snack. Founder Debbie Hull told RTN: “Come along to the next Wellbeing talk and listen to some great nutritional advice to help beat the blues and cool the hot flushes.” She said that Ann used to have a hectic lifestyle with a stressful job, eating on the run and microwave meals. “So it came as a shock when she saw a family photo of herself as she put it, ‘waddling down the beach’. She had been feeling unwell too, so she decided it was time to do something about it. “First of all, Ann joined a gym and started a fitness program together with a healthier diet. Over the years Ann became very interested in healthy food. In fact she had found her passion!” Debbie said Ann began studying with the Institute of Natural Healing in the UK and became a qualified nutritionist, enabling her to share her tips for good nutritional food with others. She added: “Now, at this point you may be imagining a halo appearing on top of Ann’s head as I did! However, you will be relieved to know she enjoys a chocolate bar or two, and wine at the weekends!”

Book launch: a brief guide to hearing loss Announcing the publication of a new book titled ‘A BRIEF GUIDE TO HEARING LOSS’ written by local hearing aid dispenser Michael Burke RHAD MSHAA of Digital Hearing at Quesada. In this layman’s guide Michael Burke shares his knowledge of all things hearing in plain English with a minimum of technical jargon. It guides you around the physiology of our ears and organs of hearing. This book aims to answer your questions about the way we hear and how and why some of us start to lose our hearing. It looks at the causes and symptoms of hearing loss, including the problems that such loss can cause the sufferer as well as those around them. It explores ways of mitigating the loss and the use of hearing tactics. It also includes an informative section on tinnitus, which affects thousands of us. It explains the different types of hearing aids, including non-standard systems, and other assistive listening devices as well as how they work, how they can help and their limitations, as well as what to expect from an aid and what changes to expect in the initial adjustment period.

Priced at just 9.95 euros, this invaluable mine of information is an ideal first step to understanding hearing problems and possible causes and solutions. It would make an excellent gift for someone who is experiencing hearing difficulties and is unsure what options are open to them and how to take the next step. You can obtain the book directly from Digital Hearing at the Quesada Business Centre, Calle los Arcos 7, Ciudad Quesada, or from the following stockists: Specsavers, Torrevieja Specsavers, Guardamar Post Shop, Quesada Easyads, C/Maestro Torralba, La Zenia. For further information about digital hearing, go to www.digitalhearingspain.com or contact Michael Burke direct on 698 418 642.

La Vila thriller by PATRICIA THOMPSON

WITH JUST three minutes left of injury time and trailing 13-7 to CAU Valencia in the first leg of a promotion play off, La Vila pulled off a dramatic victory scoring and then converting the try needed, to win 13-14. They now take a one point advantage to the home leg at Vila Joiosa. As reported last week this was always going to be a hard fought game. Honours were even in the first half until La Vila had a player ‘sin binned’ and during the ten minutes he was off the field CAU scored a converted try to go in at half time 7-0. After 17 minutes of the second half yet again La Vila had a player ‘sin binned’ giving CAU an opportunity which they took scoring with two penalties and going ahead 13-0. Now La Vila showed their fighting spirit by scoring under the posts, a magnificent converted try. With the score13-7 a converted try would win them the match. They piled on the pressure with their forwards forcing over the line for the try and conversion that clinched the game. If Vila are to win promotion they must improve on their discipline and not spend 25% of the match with just 14 players, and on their line outs. La Vila try scorers 1st. Javi Carrion 2nd. Damian Jurado both conversions by Matias Jara The second leg is at the Vila Joiosa stadium on May 1st kick off 12.30. Entrance fee 5 euros (children

Pego Golf Society

ON A beautiful morning for golf, we had an excellent turnout of 42 players who today were contesting a ‘Team Accumulator’ Competition at Oliva Nova.

The course was in great condition, little wind and smooth greens, which made for good scoring. We were delighted to have three guests this morning and they were Richard Morris, Rob Hitchins and Cathal O’Connor. All were warmly welcomed by our Captain, David O’Connor.

free). You can make this May Day a memorable one by coming along to both support your local team and have an enjoyable family outing. The stadium is well sign posted 1km off exit 62 of the motorway. For more information visit their website www.rugbylavila.net or contact Jason Craig 659 674 768 and Ignacio Davila 608 068 208.

In the main competition, the teams had to score in a 4,3,2 stableford format, that is, all 4 scores counting on the par 3 holes, best 3 scores counting on the par 4 holes and the best 2 scores on the par 5 holes. The winning teams were: 1st Place:- Donna Green, Jean Taylor, Stephen Halstead and Mr Ghost with 121 points; 2nd Place:- Angus Muir, Paul Trigwell, Steve Patton and Roger Brown with 117 points; 3rd Place:- Penny Barden, Bob Jenkins, Terry Oram and Alan Simpson with 116 points. To all our winners, hearty congratulations.

Nearest the pin at Hole 5 with their 2nd shot was Clive Wright with 0.06 meters. Nearest the pin at Hole 16 with their 1st shot was Danny Herron at 1.17 meters. There were 4 two’s today from Colin Foster, Celia Cronin, Clive Wright and Charlie Miller. The “Balls in the Water” count was 111 today, which was guessed by Bob Jenkins. If any guest would like to play with Pego Golf Society next Tuesday 3rd of May, and who wouldn’t because it is the “The Javea Cup”, which is one of our major competitions, then please enter through our website www.pegogolfsociety. com or send an e-mail to Penny Barden at pegohandicapsec@gmail.com .

The Alfaz Amblers Triumph

Walking Football

CONGRATULATIONS GO to all the Sponsors and Organisers ofSt Georges Day at Almafra,.....For the first time The Alfas Amblers took on all comers.....3 aside Walking Football!

The Playa Flamenca Walking Football team, celebrated St Georges day in the best way they know how. First of all they Had a good inter-club game, the score was irrelevant as the game was played in good spirit, as normal no injuries, with the referee keeping good control. After the game the day was celebrated in good fashion at CK1 a fantastic bar that supports our charity events everytime, with good hospitality and donations, which we thank them, whole heartedly. This club plays with a good friendly manner, every Monday at the CDM Playa Flamenca sports center, and alwayswelcomes new players over 55 with or without skills, for a 4.30pm kick off, just come along and look and laugh,or justplay and keep fit. Our recent Charity donations have been 300€ toward the much needed transporting coach with a tail lift for age concern ( none of us are getting any younger) Also a donation to the Sports department of theschool in San Miguel of 200€ with which they were able to buy 2 New Goal Posts( we help to start them young )

It really is fun! 7 minutes of walking furiously trying to score goals!! Good exercise for young and old! The Amblers won their first match against The Old Codgers, then teams came forward from

the assembled masses! Mixed teams, young and old! In fact one of the better players was a young lady who played in her bare feet! Scoring two goals!! It was our first outing, it will not be our last! Watch this space for future fixtures........By charging each player 1€ to play we raised 40€, a small contribution, but every little helps. Contact Roar at roar@boispania. com or me alan.margetts@yahoo.co.uk if you want to play or form your own team and challenge us!! We can put together 5 pitches on the sports ground behind the new Police Station in Alfazdel Pi. Thanks to R.T.N. for giving us the chance to tell you about WALKING FOOBALL.....

Success for Finca Guila FINCA GUILA Bowls Club enjoyed success on the green at The Champion of Champion’s Week in front of an appreciative crowd of supporters. Alfaz fantasy football league by patricia thompson The 2 F.A.Cup Semi-Finals plus the 13 Premier League games produced the 2nd highest scoring week of the Season in the Alfaz Fantasy Football League by contributing an amazing 47 goals, 8 clean sheets,37 yellow cards and 2 red ones. Everton’s Mori was dismissed in the Merseyside Derby while Watford’s Amrabat was sent off playing against West Ham,in their teams Mid-Week games. joe, Manager of Keith Lard F.C. has got one hand on the much sought after A.F.F.L. Trophy as his team stretched their lead at the top to a massive 81 points and they now look out of sight. Maxine’s team Plaistow 13 hammers have moved up 2 places to take over 2nd place from Scott’s Dog Dale who have slipped down to 3rd spot. Dazza’s The Pheonix Club have also dropped down 1 place to 4th while Rob’s team Scunny F.C. remain in 5th position for the 6th week running.Down at the foot of the table Lyn’s Handbrake City are doomed and are facing relegation. The Leonard Knowles Construction Golden Boot League is definitely going down to the wire with James’s Jukeboxers holding on to a very slender 6 point advantage over Pearson’s Smashers. Keith Lard F.C. are in 3rd place waiting for any slip up from the 2 front runners. At the other end of the scale Harry’s Monkey Hangers have joined Handbrake City while Mark’s team No Bad Losers have escaped from the relegation zone after scoring 24 points courtesy of Chelsea’s Hazard & Arsenal’s Sanchez who scored

all his teams points. Our Mark Carter Ladies Section looks done and dusted with Maxine’s Plaistow 13 hammers racing into a 70 point lead at the top. Debbie’s Foxy Filberts have jumped up two places to 2nd and are just 4 points ahead of Joanna’s Hup Hannah City. Kate’s Rafter’s Roasts are our highest scoring team this week with a tally of 76 points which as taken her to the top of our Monthly League for a 20 euro voucher which is sponsored by QUICKSAVE Supermarket in Albir. They have a little 3 point lead over Plaistow13hammers with one week to go. Rafter’s Roasts will join our lowest scoring team Sheona’s side Celtic Nomads who only managed to score a couple of points when the average score was 38 points in our Monthly Premier Imports Draw for a case of Cava. The competition at the top of our U.K.T.V.SPAIN Junior League is now between 2 teams Nathan’s TyrannosuarezRex F.C. and Super Rhys as Harley’s team Ginger Ninjar have dropped off the pace. Marcus’s Salford Sausages scored 31 points this week but it couldn’t get them off the bottom of the League as they still trail Bradley’s team Hero to Zero by 16 points. There is 5 weekends in our Manager of the Month for April which is being sponsored by Our Plaice in the Sun Restaurant in Albir who do a very special Fish & Chips which you can eat in our takeaway. With one week to go it’s tight at the top with only 14 points between the top 6.At the moment Bolton Brickies have a small 5 point advantage over last weeks leaders Jimmy’s team Simple.Fred West XI,Philly Smith 11 and Tyrannosuarez-Rex are all well in the mix for this excellent

meal for 2 at Our Plaice in the Sun Restaurant. At the time of going to Press I have not had time to collate all the F.A.Cup points for our RTN F.A.Cup League but I’m sure by the time you read this the up to date League Table will be up on our website which is www.alfazffl.com. Don’t forget in the next few weeks will determine where your Team finishes in the League so keep a check by logging onto our website or if you can’t access the net you can always visit one of the Bars which support us by displaying all the latest league Tables on their Notice Boards. In Benidorm Union Jack,in Albir The Local & Wyndhams,in Alfaz Robin’s Nest and in Moraira Barilloche.

Par Motor, your Citroen dealer in Benijofar PAR MOTOR is Benijofar’s oldest and most established Citroen dealer.

The family business was founded many years ago by Antonio García González as a repair shop for bicycles and motorbikes, becoming a Ducatti dealership in the days when cars were rarely seen in Benijofar or this part of the Costa Blanca. Back then the company was called Autos Huertas and cars became more popular they started to sell and repair cars. Then 29 years ago, in 1988, the company was offered the opportunity to become an official Citroen Dealership, which they have been every since. The company is now run by Antonio’s granddaughters, Noelia and Mariola. Eight years ago, when their father, Antonio García Huertas officially retired sisters Noelia and Mariola García took over the family business, under the watchful eye of their father Antonio and have grown the business into Benjofar’s most successful

The name PAR MOTOR has two meanings: PAR: being the power of two, in this care the two sisters, and PAR MOTOR, which in English would be an engine that is perfectly balanced.
