Fight for a voice THE FIGHT to win all British citizens a ‘vote for life’ continues in the wake of losing a legal battle to get expats a voice in this month’s EU Referendum. The highest court in the UK rejected a challenge that the current rule – which bars expats from voting after they have left the country for 15 years – discriminated against people who had taken up their right to ‘freedom of movement’. However, of an estimated 5.5 million Britons living around the globe; some 2.2 million live within Europe - and around 800,000 will be barred from voting in the referendum on Thursday 23rd June. There has been a record surge in the numbers of people living outside the UK to register to vote in the EU ballot; the deadline was 16th May for a postal vote although it is still possible to register online for a proxy vote. A word from JT EXPATS COUNTED out of the EU Referendum because of the time they have lived outside the UK stand undaunted as they demand not only the promised vote for life but also proper representation inside the corridors of power in Westminster. The campaign may have suffered a bloody nose in the courts but with 5.5 million British citizens resident in other countries around the world, people want to know they are not forgotten when laws are made in future. The topic of Brexit now dominates newspapers, television, and radio, and this week RTN was again invited to lock horns with opinionated radio broadcaster Jon Gaunt; who wanted to know why expats should have a vote in any case after “abandoning” the UK. A colourful 10 minute debate followed and - without having to excuse any French -words like democracy, paying taxes, and remaining British citizens passed to and fro; sometimes faster than a Murray ace. And it feels good to report another victory in the fight to strike the bad guys out of off-plan property purchases in Spain. Security for home buyers has to be the most important aspect if the housing market is to recover.

Move to stop street parties The Botellón - a huge gathering of youngsters to drink - celebrated by thousands of young people in the streets of Orihuela costs the town hall thousands of Euros, it was revealed. by Rhiannan Bell A representative of the Montemar urbanization of Campoamor asked the local authority what was the cost of the ‘Botellón festival’ to the city coffers. And residents asked what the council proposed to do to curb the parties of the so-called ’botellónes’ along the coast during the summer. Town Planning Councillor Begoña Cuartero, responsible for answering the various questions regarding the Botellón festivities, said the cost of that night was around 60,000€ to cover cleaning, Civil Protection and Local Police among other items. The Council made a commitment to take all possible steps to avoid youngsters and others drinking alcohol in public and promised “we will use all available resources.” However, it was also stated that although residents have the right to peace and quiet, others also have the right to have fun.

First Alicante Dog Beach Opens ALICANTE’S FIRST dog friendly beach is to open on June 15th at Aguamarga with services unique in Spain. The Alicante Tourist Board will put up for tender the provision of services for the first dog friendly beach in Alicante which will have a length of 250m and will be open until 15th September. The area will be subject to special maintenance and cleaning, which will include a detailed waste collection and daily disinfection of the sand. Among the services to be offered to citizens will be hammocks and parasols with supplements for dogs including low umbrellas, feeding and watering areas on elevated platforms and safety

rings for pet control. The area will be manned by a lifeguard, and will have parking and information boards offering pet related services, local vet surgery information and pet supply stores.

Action group wins again DISGRACED CAM Bank has accepted a judge’s verdict it failed to protect investors’ cash as they paid deposits for dream homes in the sun. by Jack Troughton Once described by the Governor of the Bank of Spain as the “worst of the worst”, CAM – now owned by Banco Sabadell – must now repay 13 victims nearly 500,000€ following the second case brought by the Finca Parcs Action Group. The trial involved the development of 617 luxury homes at Las Higuericas Finca Parcs, close to the village of Argramon, in Albacete. When the development was abandoned after the bank withdrew funding in 2009, just 10% of the homes were completed but none had first occupational licences. Victims paid off plan deposits between 2006 and 2008 and in February, Hellin Court found CAM and developer Cleyton GES guilty and ordered they repay deposits, interest and legal costs. In July 2014, following an appeal, the bank was ordered to repay 47 losers a total of 1.5 million Euros in the first case brought by the action group. A third trial involving around 250,000€ and nine more purchasers is scheduled for October. CAM was then found guilty of malpractice and “a complete dereliction of its duties” and since the landmark case Spain’s highest court has confirmed liabilities of the banks in such cases involving off-plan purchases. DEMAND Under Spanish law Ley 57/1968, the bank was responsible for demanding individual guarantees were issued to buyers for the cash deposited in accounts – and was also responsible to purchasers for their cash if no paperwork was issued. And the judge commented that the bank admitted there were “irregularities” in the fate of the money it received. Action group leader Keith Rule said: “All our hard work over the past eight years has been successful and the Supreme Court has recently confirmed many important aspects regarding bank liabilities according to Ley 57/1968.” Solicitors Costaluz Lawyers acting for the action group pioneered such actions and Director Maria de Castro said: “We have now won more than 200 cases against developers’ banks on failed off-plan developments all over Spain.” And the action group lawyer, Jaime de Castro commented: “Spain is unique among European countries in having an effective law to safeguard buyer’s off-plan deposits. “The supreme Courts have been applying this law strictly and categorically and I am confident this will continue.”

Harry Shindler, MBE, the war veteran who took an appeal over the referendum to the Supreme Court, believes the British Government must now put its promised ‘Vote for Life’ legislation on the statute book and give all UK citizens a voice. Thanking everyone who sent messages of support, Harry, who lives in Italy, said: “We have lost a battle...now to win the war! Let’s put this set-back behind us. We must not let it overshadow the battle that starts now, to make the ‘Vote for Life’ Bill into law.” SUPPORT He added: “MPs of all parties must now be contacted and urged to support the ‘Vote for Life’ Bill when it is before the House of Commons. “Let’s put pressure on MPs in their constituency through our family and friends in the UK. We won a great deal of support in this past period, including an editorial in the Times in our support – so let’s keep it up.” Harry said the campaign must send letters to MPs, the local and national press in the “fi nal push” to win a vote and repeal the arbitrary 15-year legislation. The Votes for Expat Brits campaign believes all British citizens should have a vote and should be properly represented in Parliament – the French model has MPs to represent people living in diff erent parts of the world. However, the failed legal challenge to win a say in the EU Referendum has brought an angry response from people wanting to vote in a ballot that directly aff ects them. Costa Blanca campaigner Margaret Hales said: “Yet again the British system discriminates against its own and prevents British people from voting. But this time it is a vote in a ‘once in a lifetime’ referendum, which is of the utmost importance to our future. “The Conservatives have reneged on their promise for a ‘Votes for life’ Bill – after the Referendum, they say! What good will that do if the Brexiters win and we all have to fl ee back to Blighty?” INSULT And she said the “insulting ruling” meant the burden fell on the shoulders of those who could still vote – casting a ballot for themselves and neighbours left disenfranchised. On the Votes for Expat Brits Facebook page, a fl ood of comments included Paulo Castro Garrido saying: “The Supreme Court is saying it is ok to have fi rst and second class British citizens, it is disgusting – maybe the ‘freedom of movement’ argument was not a good one – the case should have been based on ‘equality. The judges would not dare to directly confi rm there are two or more types of British citizen.” And Jackie Cook Grillo said: “This really leaves a nasty taste in the mouth. I feel abandoned by my own country.” Clare Ferguson posted “let them eat sympathy” after top judges apologised to expats. She added: “There is a reverberation of anger abroad.” There is a general feeling British politicians are now encased in “The Westminster Bubble” and make laws and treaties which directly aff ect expats without considering the consequences of individual citizens abroad. Brexit gathers pace

THE LATEST EU referendum polling data suggests the Brexit campaign may be gaining ground, although Remain still leads the way. The ORB survey put Remain ahead on 51% and Brexit on only 46%. Of those, 52% said quitting the EU would improve Britain’s immigration system and 48% agreed leaving would ‘give us greater control of our lives’. Pundits say results show a late surge for Brexit, placing the campaign only fi ve points behind – a big shift from the last poll, where the ‘Leave’ campaign trailed the Remain by 13 points. The results were compiled from telephone interviews of 800 people last week, and follow the release of migration statistics, showing that 184,000 people moved from the EU to come to Britain.

Fine over parasol

TORREVIEJA COUNCILLOR Javier Manzanares, considers the 150€ fine imposed over an unattended beach parasol under by-laws as an “excessive” amount. by Rhiannan Bell The politician stated he was committed to “revise” and “modify” the sanctions deemed for such actions after being questioned about the incident which occurred last September on La Cura beach. He explained that the bather was “caught red-handed” last September by local police, who removed the item and issued him a ticket. “The man argued but in the end the inspector has not taken account of his arguments and has proceeded to demand the fine be paid,” he said. “It is the first time such a fine has happened.” Local authorities considered his actions as disruptive to the ‘urban cleaning’ of public areas, despite the beach goer insisting he had simply gone for a swim and had never left the beach. In Torrevieja leaving a parasol unattended “contravenes a municipal ordinance that aims to avoid reserving a space.” The use of parasols, deck chairs or towels to reserve places is apparently forbidden between 3am and 8am. Mr Manzanares said: “People who live in Torrevieja have seen people leaving parasols and other items on the beach at 5.30 am…it is dangerous and makes life difficult for beach cleaners, who work until 6 am.”

Henna tattoo scars child by Caroline Tyszka A young child had been scarred for life having had a henna tattoo at a stall whilst on holiday in Malaga. Dad Simon Loxham, on holiday with his wife and two daughters, told reporters: “We all know what it’s like to be pestered by the kids for things when you’re away…this beach ball or that hair braid.” And he said this trip was no different. Gabriel, aged six, and four-year-old Reuben both spotted the stall and begged their parents to have one. Both parents thought it was just a bit of harmless fun and so agreed. Gabriel, chose a scorpion tattoo, which took around 5 minutes to complete, and little Reuben a skull and crossbones. After suffering a severe reaction almost two weeks later to the dye in the tattoo, six-yearold Gabriel’s arm started to swell. After taking him immediately to see their GP, he given a strong course of antibiotics and it is believed he may be scarred for life. . Simon said: “He’s had spots come up on his head, chest and glands. We’re using ointment but the seeping is really bad. “Our other son, Reuben, also had a tattoo and suffered no reaction at all. We want to raise awareness so other parents know the risks of the ‘temporary’ tattoos and how dangerous they can be for some children.” The tattoo Gabriel had was a black henna tattoo, which is henna ink mixed with a toxic chemical dye known as ParaPhenylenediamine or PPD - but you won’t see that on the signs

at the beach. Natural henna is brown and harmless. Entering the bloodstream, PPD toxins can cause liver and kidney damage. Exposure can also lead to cancer. It has been banned in the EU, however some artists do not realise the severity of any reaction and continue to use it.

Street brawl triggers alarm Local Police and Guardia Civil in Caravaca are looking for two men involved in a fight in the Gran Via last Saturday afternoon - one of allegedly wielding a gun. The brawl caused alarm among residents when one of the two men involved apparently threatened the other with a short firearm. And confusion started rumours that there had been a gunshot, unconfirmed by the police, who are still searching for the two individuals.

Motorway dare devil by RHIANNAN BELL A DRUG addict fi lmed crossing the busy A7 motorway after being ‘dared’ by a group of youths in return for a ´joint. It involved the man standing on the dividing lines of traffi c lanes on a section of the road which allows speeds of up to 120km. At one point two vehicles travelling in the same direction alongside each other missed the man by mere centimetres. The Guardia Civil investigation into the events began at the beginning of last week what had occurred through social media – fi lm of the dare

And after obtaining images and studying them, offi cers managed to determine the location on the motorway and recognised the person performing the dare; who was already known by the authorities. Eventually four people were identifi ed as being the instigators. All are residents of La Mojonera, one of whom was under 16, and all were seen encouraging and cheering the performance of the victim. The four have been variously charged with road safety offences and a crime against moral integrity.

Longest tunnel opens THE SWISS Gotthard rail tunnel, the world´s longest and deepest, has opened after taking 17 years to complete at a cost of £8.2bn. by Caroline Tyszka A massive 10m boring machine was used to drill the 57.1km tunnel which experts say will revolutionise Europe’s freight transport. For 17 years and round the clock, more than 2,000 people worked on the tunnel. During the drilling nine miners died. Twin tunnels running in both directions will transport Europe’s freight not only much more safely, but much faster. With no danger of collision, trains will race through the tunnel at speeds of up to 250km/h. While older Alpine tunnels corkscrewed through the mountains, the new railway line, from Zurich in the north all the way to Lugano in the south, is completely flat and straight.

Transport chaos in France

FRENCH STRIKERS continue to cause transport chaos as further workers join the national protests. Rail workers joined fellow union members taking industrial action on Wednesday and the Paris metro workers again walked out yesterday (Thursday). And air travellers face disruption with another air traffic control action scheduled to start today (Friday 3rd June) until Sunday 5th June. The strikers have brought much of the country to a standstill by blockading everything from oil refineries to major roads in a mass protest against labour reforms. The protests have also included violent demonstrations, which have often descended into riots, as police and public buildings are attacked. Public sector workers in neighbouring Belgium also went on strike on Tuesday over budget cuts. Police officers, teachers and some civil servants join train drivers and prison guards in the walkout - the unions are also protesting against changes to working hours and a rise in the retirement age.

RETIRED FIGHTER Ricky ‘The Hitman’ Hatton MBE and boxer Kell Brook visited the Costa Blanca this week and both took time out to meet with RTN. Ricky is on holiday in Benidorm and joined with Kell Brook, who has flown over for a 10 day training camp as part of the Dominic Ingle Gym, and training at the popular Vista Gym in La Nucia. Ricky has been supporting Kell and others members of his training camp. Kell is currently waiting for a confirmation date for his next fight. The Vista Gym has made quite a reputation in the boxing world and it plans to stage more training camps in the future. Ricky’s son Cameron was also at the camp and looks to be following in his father’s footsteps after winning his first fight last week.

Parents could be prosecuted The parents of the boy who fell into a gorilla enclosure could face prosecution after a rare ape was killed in order to protect their child. by JAMES MARTIN A zoo response team shot the giant male silverback after he grabbed the four-year-old at Cincinnati Zoo and dragged him around for more than ten minutes. The child was released from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Centre on Saturday night. Police have said his parents could still be indicted by prosecutors. Zoo officials said the four-year-old climbed through a barrier at the Gorilla World exhibit and then fell into the enclosure 15 feet below. Two female gorillas complied with calls from zoo staff to leave the area, but Harambe, a 17-year-old, ignored the signal and picked up the child. Although the gorilla was not harming the child, zoo experts say this was “an extremely strong” animal in an agitated situation – adding “they made a tough choice and they made the right choice because they saved that little boy’s life.”

Sentencing delay THE MAN found guilty of killing missing Amy Fitzpatrick’s brother Dean has had his sentencing adjourned until June 13th. The delay occurred after the judge heard many of impact statements, and although David Mahon was cleared of murder he was found guilty of manslaughter. In a statement from his lawyer it was confirmed Mahon will not appeal against the guilty verdict issued last month for killing his stepson Dean Fitzpatrick. However, Dean’s father, Christopher, said in an impact statement: “No words can describe my pain, anger and despair.” Despite Mahon stabbing his stepson, his wife Audrey Fitzpatrick said that she had “forgiven” her husband for killing her son. Amy Fitzpatrick, 15 years old, disappeared on New Year’s Day in 2008 after leaving a friends house in Mijas, Costa del Sol.

EasyJet cracks down on late fliers

EasyJet is to start turning away late passengers who arrive at security barriers 30 minutes before departure – leaving them to rebook travel. As the peak holiday season approaches, EasyJet has instructed Gatwick to reprogramme the barriers, so that travellers with a boarding time of less than 30 minutes will be grounded and could face a charge of £80 to change their flight. The budget airline already sells a ‘missed flight cover’ for £7.50 so anyone caught out by being late can qualify for a refund.

Website in English Torrevieja Town Hall will soon present its new website, which will feature audio and video content for the first time - and provide information in English. by Rhiannan Bell It will distribute information to the public in a format for smart phones and tablets; feature posters, audio and visual material; and will be compatible with social networks. The Town Hall has acquired a server and the new system will link all the existing municipal websites. A council spokesman said information will be translated into various languages “which is vital for a place like Torrevieja.”

Firefighters Rescue Cat Firefighters rescued a kitten which was ‘trapped’ in a wall cavity for a whole day in Torrevieja. Firemen from Torrevieja Park were called to assist in the rescue of the animal which managed to find its way into the wall cavity of a house in Calle Jacinto Benavente last weekend. For more than a day the feline thought to be around 10-weeks-old was heard crying constantly by neighbours until someone called the emergency services for help. Finding no way to access the animal without damaging the structure, members of the fire brigade began to carefully chisel away at the wall until a gap large enough to bring the young cat out was made. The event was observed with some interest; from a short distance away, by the cat’s brothers and sisters, all local strays. The rescued cat, however, landed on his feet as one of the neighbours offered to care for him with support from the Municipal Hostel which is run in conjunction with the Town Hall to help adopt animals.

Second quake in Murcia A second earthquake hit Murcia on Thursday less than 24 hours after the region was hit by an initial seismic shock. Both quakes registered 2 on the Richter scale and the epicentre of the second was located near the Puerto de la Cadena at about 12 meters depth according to the National Geographic Institute. The low intensity and the fact that both earthquakes occurred in the early hours of the morning, resulted in only a few people who actually felt the tremors.

Workshop creates cycle lanes

The second Employment Workshop on Orihuela Costa has created a network of cycle paths and pedestrian walkways. by Rhiannan Bell A closing ceremony was held at the municipal library and certificates were presented to participants, mainly the long-term unemployed and with an average age of 50. The student-workers have trained for six months and have built a network of cycle paths along the coast, a total of 7km whilst learning a trade and receiving a minimum professional salary. And the project has been supervised by a project management team and seven tutors. The intention was to connect the existing network of cycle paths from La Zenia with Playa Flamenca and Cala Mosca and to finally reach Punta Prima promenade. Another stretch crosses the N-332 connecting the commercial centre and Villamartin.

Accident at Guardia office

A woman aged 70 suffered a broken knee after sitting on a broken chair in the offices of Torrevieja Guardia Civil. A member of the Association of Guardia Civil (AUGC) explained that the incident occurred at about 1pm on Monday when a woman of foreign nationality “sat on the broken chair.” She was helped at the office before being taken to the Hospital of Torrevieja with a possible fractured knee. There was a sign warning of the broken chair but written in Spanish which was not understood by the victim. The offending furniture has since been removed. The incident came five days after Alicante AUGC denounced “the pressure on officers serving in Torrevieja by the commander in chief.” .

Chopper hunts tigers by Rhiannan Bell

Reconnaissance flights by a helicopter is helping to control the tiger mosquito and has identified more than 80 outbreaks of insect activity in the Murcia municipality. The vast majority of cases are said to be located in private pools and irrigation ponds. The control campaign is being driven by the Veterinary Service and this year is taking place on the ground and in the air. Collaboration with the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura (CHS) for the monitoring and control of the river environment is also being maintained, while the helicopter and drones are responsible for the detection in difficult to access areas. The treatment of specific infestations prevents indiscriminate mass fumigations, which could hit human health, and allows a focus on an identified location. A spokesman said: “This allows us to combat more effectively this species and act against larvae, since the tiger mosquito grows in small isolated spaces rather than large bodies of water.” The authorities stressed the importance of neighbourhood cooperation, because in 90% of cases the locations for infestation are on private property. The Tiger mosquito is native to the tropical and subtropical areas of Southeast Asia; however, it has spread to other countries through the transport of goods and international travel. The insect is named ‘tiger mosquito’ because of its striped body.

Drug gang arrests Building of THE GUARDIA Civil have arrested a criminal group who were selling drugs in Totana, Murcia. by Caroline Tyszka Operation SAN Peter officers arrested 8 people and seized 10,000 doses of NSP (new psychoactive substances). The GHB/GBL drug has already caused the death of several young people across Europe. The 5 men and three women arrested were residents of Totana where a young man died in July 2015. Two other youths were also hospitalised having taken the drug whilst at a nightclub in Murcia. Seven properties were searched with the officers finding doses of GHB and GBL as well a cocaine, speed and ecstasy. They also discovered two greenhouses containing a hundred marijuana plants. Two cars, laptops, scales, mobiles and growing equipment were also seized. GBL and GHB first appeared in the US and following several deaths was banned in 1995. Users of the drugs risk liver failure, breathing problems, tremors, convulsions and death. The drugs, which have no odour or taste and are colourless have also been used in many cases of sexual assault.

school to start The Parents Association (AMPA) at the Principe de EspaĂąa Primary school in Rojales has received confirmation from the Rojales Town Hall that construction of the new centre will begin once the 2015/16 school year ends in June. Parents have been protesting for more than a decade to get the construction approved and underway at the facility which has had its name changed to Poeta Miguel HernĂĄndez. The improvements, which were approved last April, will consist of a total of 18 primary classes and a canteen to accommodate 300 school children.

Audience is Stagestruck THEATRE GROUP Stagestruck has received rave reviews for the three performances of original comedy ‘Just Another Week in Paradise’ at the Cardenal Belluga Theatre, San Fulgencio. by patricia thompson Scriptwriter and director Leigh Humphries penned the piece and was delighted at the positive reaction from audiences – some people saying it was the best Stagestruck show ever. The audience laughed throughout; apart from one intense scene where Georgia, the Hotel Paradise owner, played by Jenny Dexter, revealed to her new staff member, Hannah (Victoria Scott) that she was in fact her estranged mother. During this scene, you could hear a pin drop until the actual reveal when an EastEnders ‘doofer’ unexpectedly and temporarily broke the tension - hilarious!

The audience particularly warmed to Barry and Doreen, played by Jim and Jean Speakman, the Hen party played by Katie Farmer, Sue Stabler and Dianne Scott, Maureen on her mobility scooter played by Chrissie Wright, and Pat Hiscock, the only Gay in the Hotel played by Joe Luker. And the whole cast deserve praise for their portrayal of their characters and for their professionalism. The set, built by Don Payen looked terrific and Roger Scott and his team added atmosphere with skilful lighting and sound effects. Championship success THE PUEBLO Bravo Petanca Club staged its annual championships last week with three days of competition keenly fought by members. Sponsored by Rojales Town Hall, there were less teams in

evidence this year because several Spanish members had other commitments; but the final day was both intense and exciting. Four teams were separated by just a couple of points at the start of the finals and it got even more nail-biting – at one point three teams were equal but at the end Pedro, Ron and Rudy nudged ahead by a point to win; leaving the

other two teams to a very close match to decide second and third places. Rojales provided trophies and the Councillor for Sport Pedro Llopis presented them at the end of play. Goyos in Quesada provided t-shirts and at the end of the championships everyone had enjoyed playing competitive and friendly petanca.

Improving tourism brings surprise backlash

THE RESORT of Palma de Mallorca has seen an increase in negativity towards tourism with tensions increasing. by Caroline Tyszka On the Spanish island of Mallorca, which attracts millions of foreigners every year, a new type of graffiti has been occurring more and more often. The “tourists go home” protest, which represents only a minority of the islanders seems to be gathering numbers and has reportedly spread to the mainland as residents complain of the rising number of visitors who, although bring money to their regions, disrupt the lives of the locals and put unnecessary strain on the services such as transport and water. Tourism accounts for 12 percent of economic output and 16 percent of jobs in Spain which is drawing record numbers of visitors who are avoiding destinations where security is a concern, notably Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey.

Whilst the surge has helped the country recover from recession and alleviate a jobs crisis, for many Spaniards, the jump in tourism has a downside. “They want to turn us into a theme park, a place you close the doors on at night because no-one lives there,” said Luis Clar, who heads an association in the La Seu neighbourhood of Palma de Mallorca, home to its main monuments. He complained that the council had recently banned parking in certain areas as it was deemed an eyesore but that this meant residents were unable to park anywhere near their homes. In drought-prone island Ibiza water reserves are getting low and in rural Menorca fears are mounting that natural beauty-spots risk being spoiled. For example one day last August, the population across the Balearics nearly doubled, reaching a record 2 million.

Deadly storms hit northern Europe Severe thunderstorms caused havoc across northern Europe last week. The storms, which saw several people being injured and one man killed, also caused travel disruption for flights to cities such as Amsterdam. In Germany, 30 people were taken to hospital on Saturday after they were struck during a junior football match. Three adults were seriously hurt, including the referee who was directly hit by a lightning bolt. He had to be resuscitated before being airlifted to hospital. Guenter Denzer, a volunteer firefighter told reporters, “there were many spectators, which was problematic, and that we live in a rural area where everybody knows everyone. It’s more of a shock, because you know the person lying there who is seriously injured.” In South-west Poland, one man was killed after he was struck by lightning while hiking in Mountains, and in Paris, 11 people, most of them children, were injured during a birthday party in a park in the north-west of the city.

Dahl’s dictionary

A NEW dictionary defines thousands of words used by children’s author Roald Dahl to celebrate the centenary of the writer’s birth. Almost 8,000 words – real and invented – will be included in the Oxford Roald Dahl Dictionary, which has taken over five years to compile and was published yesterday. Dahl famously invented words to prevent young readers becoming bored, placing his novels aside, and watching television. The dictionary features his longtime illustrator Sir Quentin Blake and has been assembled by lexicographer Dr Susan Rennie. With a love of wordplay, the author swapped letters around and adopted spoonerisms and malapropisms; often basing the word on sound he liked. Dr Rennie said even if the writer did not explain what his words actually meant; kids could work it out for themselves. “For example, you know that something lickswishy and delumptious is good to eat...whereas something uckyslush or rotsome is definitely not.” The dictionary is surely something ‘swashboggling’ – very special – although adults might find some words, without a definition, somewhat ‘flushbunking’; that’s ‘makes no sense whatsoever’. Dahl also used the odd bit of biographical detail. Matilda’s parrot is named ‘Chopper’, the name of the writer’s own Jack Russell dog. His first children’s story, James and the giant Peach, was published in 1961 and was a hit. Every subsequent release – including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Big Friendly giant, and Fantastic Mr Fox – were also bestsellers. And Steven Spielberg’s film adaptation of BFG – Big Friendly Giant – is set for release in July and could be a blockbuster.

BREXIT Chances We are fast approaching the referendum date 23rd June but over the last few weeks the polls seem to edging more and more in favour for the IN Campaign with polls varying between a 10% and 15% lead. The bookies seem to think it is an even bigger certainty now offering 1/5 remain IN and 4/1 for an OUT vote (average odds using online price analyst oddschecker.com). This has also been indicated with the Pound V Euro rate edging back towards the pre referendum announcement figure of 1.4 with the current exchange rate being around 1.31 after dropping below the 1.2 mark just a few weeks ago. (stats provided by XE.com live) The Social Media campaign is being won by the OUT campaigners with every other post is about why we would be better off OUT but this seems to be becoming more and more in vain as the date approaches. With regards to investing the schools of thought are that OUT will be bad for the Markets and IN will be good. With the increasing likelihood of an IN there could be some real potential opportunities to be had now before the actual vote. Having said that the Pundits and Bookies do not always get it right. Just look at Leicester winning the English Premier League at 5000/1 and it is only 1 year ago the odds for Donald Trump to be the next U.S. President were 250/1! Still the most frequent question I get is ‘what about exchanging Euro’s and Sterling’ When investing I try to eliminate extra risks for my clients so it is best to keep things simple. Stewart: full of ‘Teen Spirit’ COSTA BLANCA musician Stewart Collier died suddenly last Thursday at his home in Javea after a short illness.

by JACK TROUGHTON THE 50-YEAR-old was a guitarist, singer, writer and producer, and with keyboard player Christian Pearl inspired new musicians with his vast knowledge of the business at Javea Rock Academy. He was also Kurt Cobain – pictured in character crowdsurfing – in ‘Teen Spirit’, the world’s number one Nirvana tribute band. In this guise, Stewart performed on

television for the BBC and MTV, and was lucky enough to travel the world for live stage performances. And in a varied and long stage and studio career, he performed with some of the rock industry’s best known names including Aerosmith, Meatloaf, Alanis Morrisette, Tori Amos, Alice Cooper, The Stereophonics and Primal Scream. In 2002, he was invited by Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker to appear

and sing on the band’s last video and has produced recording sessions for artists from folk, jazz, pop, to fullblown rock bands. During his nine years in Javea, Stewart also worked as a presenter for Bay Radio and just a day before his death recorded his last music with the station’s Bob and Noelle, broadcast from a Dutch-based shortwave station on Friday evening.

Roses are very traditional in spain

ROSES LOOK wonderful in Spanish gardens at present as they have in late spring for two millenniums. The flowers and perfume can make great features of a wall, corner of the garden, patio or courtyard but only with a fair amount of effort. The six most important factors being the choice of plants, their planting in well prepared rich soil, regular watering, the frequent removal of dead flowers, the prevention of diseases and a heavy late winter pruning. Before you decide to invest in rose plants recognise that: a. Although roses can flower for nine months of the year they will not be as continuously flowering or as profusely covered with flowers as say bougainvilleas or lantanas. b. Climbers can be planted as an isolated feature or fitted in with other climbers on a wall or pergola but bush roses look best in a dedicated rose bed or garden, planted closely to give a mass of colour. But as already suggested that means a lot of work with a need to deadhead as flowers die as well as a heavy winter pruning. c. In hot weather roses often last longer if cut and put in a vase than if left on the bush. If one cuts roses for the house this reduces the colour in the rose garden unless extensive. This is why many Spaniards, and ourselves, grow their roses alongside their vegetable plots. d. In general there is less choice of varieties of roses in Spanish nurseries than in northern Europe, some of the varieties you will not recognise, and the best varieties sell out fast. Unless you have a local nursery with a good selection obtain a few mail order catalogues from UK specialists and order early to avoid disappointments. e. One good thing about Spain is that it is easy to propagate roses from cuttings at any time of the year. So beg a cutting of every rose that impresses you in your neighbours and friends gardens, or beg the stems of cut roses when they empty a vase to throw them away. We use the following approach learned from a Spanish neighbour. 1. Cut off the flowering or leafy top. Slit the base of the cutting for a centimetre and a half and squeeze in a dried sweet corn seed. 2. Plant the cutting so that two thirds of the cutting is buried making sure that the sweet corn is not dislodged. Keep damp. We prefer to plant cuttings in the open ground to planting in pots….largely because we might forget to water them! 3. When the cutting shows growth grow it on in the same place or dig up and transplant when a year old during the late autumn, winter or early spring. f. The heat and humidity of Spain can cause as many disease problems as in northern Europe. However the following actions should avoid most disasters. 1. Only use healthy cuttings and purchase healthy plants. 2. Never allow rose plants to dry out. 3. Feed by working well rotted manure into planting holes and surround the base of planted stems with a ring of horse manure each spring. A twice monthly feed with a proprietary rose fertilizer or comfrey solution is also beneficial during the months of flowering. 4. Plant garlic corms alongside each plant or if growing alongside the vegetable plant grow a line of garlic through the rose bed to protect against fungal diseases. 5. Spray plants against rust with an infusion made from horsetail and tomato leaves. 6. Prune off any diseased leaves and stems as soon as they occur and dispose of well away from rose bed. Do not compost them.

Printer driver is unavailable HI AUNTY Virus, I have a Lenovo computer with 8.1 windows with a Canon MP240 printer, I recently upgraded to Windows 10 and now can’t use my printer, the message is saying driver is unavailable for the printer, surely I don’t have to buy a new printer just because I have upgraded to Windows 10. Aunty says: You are not alone. Sometimes the default drivers installed by W10 may not work, so you may have to install the drivers direct from the manufacturer’s website. I went to the Cannon MP240 driver website : http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/printers_multifunction/pixma_mp_series/pixma_ mp240#DriversAndSoftware But there is a message saying: “Canon will not issue drivers for this model to support the Windows 10 operating system, the Windows 7 or Windows 8 drivers should function in the Windows 10 environment with some limitations which are currently unknown to Canon.”. So it looks like if you cannot get your printer to work using the W7 or W8 drivers, then you will need another printer. Hi Aunty The problem I have is I cannot type in the “at” in my email address. It is on laptop bottom right of number 2 but does not work. So I am stuck with no email. Can you help please? Bob Aunty says: For characters on the bottom right of keys you need to press the “alt gr” button (usually located to the right of the space bar) with that key. If that does not bring you your “@” sign, then your keyboard setting in W8.1 are not set up to your keyboard layout - and perhaps the “@” sign is allocated to a different key... on a “querty” UK setting keyboard it can be allocated to the “apostrophe” key. So you will need to go into the control panel and change the keyboard layout options. Or if you are really struggling, copy and paste the “@” sign from somewhere else, like from someone else’s email address, or the character map.

 The Mercury opposition to Mars puts a block on communication so please think twice before saying or doing something that you may later regret. Sometimes things are best kept a secret, and anyway, you may not be the right person to spill the beans when all is said and done. Be careful that your actions could cause offence, look before you leap! It is a romantic Venus that squares up to Neptune and sextiles Ceres this week. This puts a timing on something that you have to do, and serves to start the process of a new relationship, which bodes well. Your own specific psychic energies are released, and it is time to do what you feel you both need right now. Go for it, only don’t look back! After the recent upheaval you are currently unsure whether to make you next move, or not; and you are erring on the side of caution. Intelligence tells you that there is more to all this then meets the eye and that there is something that appears to be holding you back. This week sees Venus square on Saturn and at last the truth will be told. Moon faced, you are very focussed on something that is proving harder than you think to do. There is a need to both dispel rumour and cement energies that take you to more positive and inspiring levels. Uranus is advising you to go for what it is you really want and not to take advice from those who really don’t know where you really are right now! The Sun squares on Jupiter and opposes Saturn. These encouraging actions are backed by a midweek conjunction with Venus. Do what you do for good cause, but if it doesn’t feel right then don’t do it. You are hurt now, and it will take a long time to get over the betrayal, but you know in your heart that you are better off without this man. life&leisure #charity //////////////////////////////////// Cancer campaign wins 4,000€ by Rhiannan Bell The recent recycling campaign in Orihuela in support of cancer charities collected 4,000kg of glass - now converted into 4,000€. The money was donated to ‘The Pink Ladies’ and ‘Mas Vida’ after glass was deposited into special pink ‘boob’ containers. The campaign was organised by Ecoembes and the Town Hall to help in the fight against cancer, installed containers both in the city and along the coast. Associations Más Vida and the Pink Ladies, of Orihuela Costa, who are both busy in the area supporting the fight against cancer. Councillor Noelia Grao and the representative of Ecoembes, Roberto Fuentes, handed over the cheques. Two positive aspects of the campaign were highlighted; the high rate of glass recycling in the municipality over one week and the commitment of residents in their support of the environment and the fight against cancer. Two pink containers are to remain in the town centre and a pair on the coast to mark the campaign’s success and to encourage recycling all year round.

Can ye stay employed by Kanye? … Can Ye? IT ALWAYS worth taking a closer look when a member of a famous person’s entourage pops up with a comment or three on how they are in real life. These types of comments can of course be influenced by many different scenarios, but in the case of Steve Stanulis, former bodyguard of Kanye West, the rappers track record of bad behaviour goes before him … in other words I´m leaning in favour of the bodyguard. Steve, whose client list has included Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire, told The Sun “I was actually fired by Kanye for introducing myself to his wife Kim Kardashian West,” before adding “I had to look after his toddler daughter once and it was so much easier than babysitting the father.” He was warned by others in his line of work about West saying “I was told, don’t expect to last long, he goes through a lot of guys and some don’t even last the first hour!” The tale gets more and more bizarre with Steve explaining the run up to going to a recording studio with Kanye. “We headed to his music studio, and when we got into the elevator he just stood there with his arms folded and said, “Aren’t you going to press the button?“ Steve then said Kanye ´flipped out´ because he didn’t know what floor they were supposed to go to and Kanye was squealing that his time was precious and that he couldn’t believe I hadn’t called ahead to find out which floor he worked on! Stanulis lasted a mere two weeks in West´s employ and encapsulated the time rather neatly telling The Sun “I was amazed by the amount of bizarre behavior I saw in just two weeks. One time he got annoyed because I ‘got in his shot’ when the paparazzi were taking pictures,” and on the business of his sacking said “I thought he was joking when he said I was not to speak to his wife Kim, and when he saw me introducing myself to her at the Met Gala he fired me immediately!” Westie baby is in need of some serious therapy don’t you think! The world of the rapper is to shock people with their ´in your face´ lyrics and their ´over the top´ behaviour, but Kanye West seems to have taken this modus operandi to a whole new level, and it’s not pretty! “

MARSHALL BRUCE Mathers III was born in 1972, in St. Joseph, Missouri, then cleverly changing his name to Eminem, became the first guy to bring rapping to the fore. His first album ´Infinite´ bombed in ´96, his second ´The Slim Shady LP´ fell one place short of the top, then he struck gold in 2000 when his album The Marshall Mathers LP made No 1 as did the following five. He´s here today on the back of selling house bricks and various other ´object da´ from the house he grew up in. Yes I know it’s pretty strange, but it’s to do with a package that includes a retro cassette of that first No 1 album with part of the profits going to charity. House Bricks!!

WHEN IDRIS Elba is mentioned it’s usually about him becoming the first black James Bond, but this is not entirely why he´s here today. It’s actually a three part story so you´ll need your best attention boots on to avoid getting lost. Part 1 is that Idris is indeed still in contention for the role of James Bond … Part 2 refers to summer blockbuster Star Trek: Beyond, released on July 22nd, in which he plays baddie Krall, and Part 3 is to do with a music video. Two guys from Seattle, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, are a hip hop duo, and Idris plays a pretty risqué role in the video of their latest single ´Dance Off.´ Check it out. I HAD a dig at social media recently based on how unpleasant some people can be, but I´ve got a tale that includes two videos for you to watch that fly in the face of all that ugliness. A lady called Candice Payne became famous for posting a Facebook video of the moment she bought a Chewbacca mask that makes actual Chewy sounds. Her utter joy and incredible belly laugh earned her 140million views in three days, and following on from that she appeared in James Corden´s carpool item on his talk show in America. THE QUEEN´S 90th birthday celebrations are well behind us now, but what´s gone unnoticed is that Winnie the Pooh is also 90 years old. A.A. Milne wrote his first Winne the Pooh book way back in 1926 and dedicated it to the then new born Princess Elizabeth. The writer passed on in 1956, but his legacy continues and ´Winniethe-Pooh and the Royal Birthday´ was recently published in honour of the both the Queen and the honey-loving bear turning 90. One of A.A. Milne´s teachers at school was H.G. Wells whom I´m sure taught him many things in the art of writing, like leaving a legacy that includes featuring not just the Queen in the book but Prince George also. Who´s a clever boy then!

NEW YORKER Lindsay Lohan has spent the last half a dozen years in the world of arrests, imprisonment and drink related incidents that have rendered her more or less unemployable, that is, until she got engaged to Russian Egor Tarabasov in April. She has recently moved to London where she changed her phone number and email addresses, then changed them both again in an attempt to weed out any temptation from old friends, all of which has been under the guidance of Egor. Father Michael Lohan said “Egor wants things to be in the right place for Lindsay,” adding “she still stays up late, but nowadays she’s at home reading scripts rather than going out.” Is this the comeback story of all time?

British Soap Awards winners by JAMES MARTIN ITV’s Emmerdale triumphed in the Best British Soap category for the first time in the award show’s 18 year history. Speaking on behalf of the entire cast and crew at the 2016 ceremony, John Middleton - who stars as longstanding character Ashley Thomas - remembered the late actress Shirley Stelfox, who played Edna Birch, as he received the award. He said: “Not only was she wonderfully talented, she was also fiercely proud of the show.” Danny Miller, Emmerdale’s Aaron Livesy, took home a brace of awards, winning Best Actor and Best Male Dramatic Performance in a special night for the Yorkshirebased show. And EastEnders’ actress Lacey Turner, who plays the troubled Stacey Branning, also secured a pair of prizes, securing the Best Actress and Best Female Dramatic Performance awards to the delight of the Eastenders crew. A Day of Two Halves for SAMM Sailors by patricia thompson Having cancelled the racing on May 22nd due to a Dragon Boat event at CTD the competitors arrived bright and early for the rescheduled racing on May 29th only to find that the wind had decided not to turn up. Despite this seven boats came to the start at 11.15am in the hope that the forecast 8 knots would make a showing. But no, and the first group away, the day boats Conny, Sirocco and Mistral took 5 minutes to drift across the line but, 10 minutes later when the dinghies, Shoestrings Dos, Tres and Quarto plus the diminutive Rosita started there was a zephyr of a breeze from the west. This built to about 8 knots and backed south by the end of the four laps which took around 1 hour 20 minutes to complete. A fine display of sailing by the crew of Conny in such light conditions gave her a win by just 89 seconds. During the break the wind came in with a vengeance, blowing easterly 12 to 15 knots, only to swing back south by the 2.15pm start and gusting even higher, kicking up a short

chop almost 1 meter high. Rosita had wisely decided not to sail and the conditions proved too much for Dos who capsized twice and retired. Tug Wilson and Pat Fleck in Tres were flying round the course and on line for a win when they also went over at the gibe mark on lap five. More about rhythm and vowels

We were talking about the rhythm of words, and how important it is in both English and Spanish. Understanding where the beat goes in a word is so fundamental to communication, that I am always surprised not to hear it mentioned more often. In our own language it is completely unconscious; which is all the more reason why we should pay attention to it when learning another language. We have looked at the three basic rules of word stress in Spanish, which are really straightforward. They mean that we can always be confident in knowing exactly how a Spanish word should sound by the way that it is spelt, and whether it has an accent or not. There is one last matter to deal with before we have the whole picture, and this is slightly more complex, but again completely fixed and regular. The first thing we need to learn is that the five Spanish vowels that we know and love so well, for the purposes of this subject, are divided into “weak” and “strong” vowels. The three strong vowels are A, E, O and the two weak vowels are I and U. If it helps you to remember which one is which, it is connected to the shape of the mouth. A,E and O are sounds made with the mouth wide open, whereas with I and U the mouth is narrower. As you know, many words in Spanish have combinations of vowels in them, possibly even the majority of words. There are many thousands of examples, so here are just three – aceite, puedo, residencia. As you will see, each of these words has a different vowel combination “ei”, “ue”, “ia”. In fact, if you look at any text in Spanish you will find examples of every possible combination of vowels. One or two are less common, and I’ve only ever found one case of “ou” which is “estadounidense” (someone from the United States) which is cheating really as it’s a combination of two words.

If you remember the rules of stress we learnt last week, you can work out where the beat goes on each of these words. All three of them fall into the category of words ending in vowels, which have the beat on the last but one syllable. Therefore they sound like this: aCEIte, PUEdo, resiDENcia. In the case of “residencia” you will see that, since “ia” counts as one syllable, the beat goes on the syllable before DEN. If nothing else, this should answer the eternal question – how should we say “farmacia” which is very often mispronounced by English speakers. Since “ia” is only one beat, then it has to be “farMAcia”. When two strong vowels are put together, they count as syllables in their own right - hence, the next time you need the loo in a restaurant you should ask for the asEo, and not the “Asio”, as it is so often mispronounced. Mind you, they always seem to know where you mean for some strange reason. Finally, when the beat does actually fall on the weak vowel in a “weak-strong” combination, this is indicated with an accent: for example “panadería”, the accent making it a five-syllable word. I know I have condensed a lot of information into one article, but the idea is that you spend the rest of the week, or month, or year, testing it out for yourself to see if I am telling you the truth, and if I am, to help it stick in your mind.

Anyway, back to the point. If you look at the three examples “aceite, puedo, residencia” you will see that in each case the combination is of one weak and one strong vowel (ei, ue, ia). Yes! yes I know she has 75 million social media acolytes, that’s 25 times more than the population of Armenia, from whence the Kardashian Klan originally came. Rant # 3- actor Tom Conti recently thought the slightly mocking thespian epithet ‘luvvie’ was on a par with the derogatory ethnic slur - n****r. Now I don’t know what colour the sky is on Planet Conti, but I suggest he pops down to Tower Hamlets, a scant few miles from his £17.5m mansion in leafy Hampstead and puts forward his theory to the inhabitants there. Look! I know they are soppy showbiz flibbertigibbets & perhaps we should be aiming the barbs at a more disreputable target like -Tony Blair. The problem is he’s beyond parody as he goes on a Smarm Offensive, pre-empting and trying to soften an imminent severe kicking from the Chilcot Inquiry after a 7 year gestation period - costing the thick end of £9m & running in excess of 2½ million words. The American Declaration Of Independence took 1,340 words, 240 years ago and still, fundamentally, appears to work – whether that will be the case if ‘The Trumpster’ struts his funky hairy stuff into the White House remains to be seen. Orange chilli pork chops

Surprise your palette with this playful combination of sweet and heat. It’s so effortless it’s sure to be added to the weeknight rotation. INGREDIENTS 4 pork chops, 1 1/2” thick 2 tsp chili powder 2 tbsp honey 1/2 tsp grated orange peel 1/2 tsp garlic powder 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp salt 1/2 tsp rosemary 1/2 tsp thyme DIRECTIONS In a bowl, combine honey, seasonings and orange peel; mix well. Spread over one side of pork chops. Place honey-side down on grill over MEDIUM - LOW heat and barbecue 4 - 6 minutes per side, brushing remaining honey mixture over other side of meat.

Thai-style steamed fish

Serve with Thai jasmine rice for a flavour-packed low-fat meal. Ingredients 2 trout fillets, each weighing about 140g/5oz a small knob of fresh root ginger , peeled and chopped 1 small garlic clove, chopped 1 small red chilli (not birdâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s eye), seeded and finely chopped grated zest and juice of 1 lime 3 baby pak choi, each quartered lengthways 2 tbsp soy sauce Method 1. Place the fish fillets side by side on a large square of foil and scatter the ginger, garlic, chilli and lime zest over them. Drizzle the lime juice on top and then scatter the pieces of pak choi around and on top of the fish. Pour the soy sauce over the pak choi and loosely seal the foil to make a package, making sure you leave space at the top for the steam to circulate as the fish cooks.

2. Steam for 15 minutes. (If you havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t got a steamer, put the parcel on a heatproof plate over a pan of gently simmering water, cover with a lid and steam.)

Morocco dominate the Benidorm Rugby Sevens tournament by TONY FOX FOR THOSE who like their rugby fast and furious a sun renched weekend saw a feast of sevens matches to suit all tastes at Vila Joyosa. Finals day on Sunday was climaxed by a superb display from the Moroccan team to win the international team prize beating a select Spanish Team under the Viator (leading suppliers of rugby clothing) banner 29-7. This Morocco team now go on to Rio for the Olympics and we wish them well. In the international plate final La Vila first team beat Moldavia 7-0, however their B team lost to Bearnaise France 7-27 in the clubs cup final.

The Women’s Cup was won by Alicante as was the Clubs Plate Cup. Unfortunately the Italian Old Lemons team when beaten by La Vila in the Club Cup semi- final threw the dummy out of the pram and berated the officials with complaints, one incident in a tournament played in the very best of team spirit. A lighter moment was when the referees transport was wheel clamped on Finals morning in Benidorm and they only just made it for the first match. Thrilling ﬁnals close competition HARD FOUGHT bowls matches brought the 2016 Linea Directa Spanish Championships at the Emerald Isle club to a close.

The finals were staged last Friday and Saturday after using the club’s green for two weeks – the final moments of the tournament seeing the lowering of the flag and playing the Spanish national anthem. On Friday in the Mixed Triples, family team Robert and Grace Cathcart with son Graham from Teide earned a win over San Miguel’s Bob Nesbitt, with Carl and Ann Eagle. Lynn Greenland and Stuart Denholm of San Miguel beat Ann Holland and Keith Phillips from San Luis in the Mixed Pairs. The experienced champions were pre-match favourites on paper but the San Luis pair played some great bowls. Saturday morning brought two San Luis teams together in the Mens Pairs. It was ‘nip and tuck’ as Julian Pering and Paul Parkes played Dave Blackie and Scott Malden but Julian and Paul took a lead midway and held on to take the title. In the Ladies Pairs, Chris Parsons and Lin Miller of San Miguel hung on to a tight lead going into the last end and did enough to beat Peta Rhodes and Carol Broomfield of Quesada, despite losing the stage. Favourite Martin Foulcer of Vistabella met the Emerald Isle’s Frank Close in the final of the Men’s Singles – Martin got off to a storming start and was 10-0 up after four ends and although his opponent fought back, he won 21-17. And in the Ladies Singles, Ann Eagle, the 2007 champion from San Miguel, met Melanie Holland of Quesada – it was the match of the competition and closely fought throughout, Ann winning 21-19.

Alfaz fantasy football league by patricia thompson Manchester United’s 2-1 victory after extra time against Crystal Palace in the F.A.Cup Final brought the curtain down on another exciting Season of the Alfaz Fantasy Football League. Congratulations go out to our overall Champion Joe whose team Keith Lard F.C. won the 22nd A.F.F.L. by the largest margin ever of 107 points. Our other major winners were Ian’s team Tasty Toffees who beat Parky’s Players by a comfortable 16 points to lift our RTN F.A.Cup League. Jeanette’s team Jin’s Dream Team beat Dazza’s team The Pheonix Club in the Final of our RTN K.O.Cup Competition to become our 4th Lady Manager to win this Trophy.I must mention that she won the A.F.F.L. in 2005 Season so she is no stranger to winning Trophies in the Fantasy. James’s Jukeboxers became only the 3rd team to win our prestigious Leonard Knowles Construction Golden Boot League when his team just pipped David’s Pearson’s Smashers courtesy of Wayne Rooney’s goal against Bournemouth in the last week of the Season. Maxine’s team Plaistow13hammers finished up winning our Mark Carter Ladies Section with a 88 point advantage over Debbie’s Foxy Filberts who is still celebrating Leicester City Fantasy Premier League win! The highest score of the Season went Tracey’s Flyers who rattled up 107 points in week 24 while at the other end of the scale the lowest score of the Season went to Anne’s team Bolton Wanderers who some how managed a remarkable minus 10 1st week of the Fantasy. 3 Wooden Spoons went to Lyn’s Handbrake City while Bradley’s team Hero to Zero(Junior League)and Penny’s Penz Zephyers(F.A.Cup League) picked up the other 2. Top performers in this Season’s Fantasy League are as follows,in goal no surprise there with Manchester United’s David de Gea scoring 108 points,6 more than Arsenal’s Peta Cech. Only 1 Manager selected the Spanish keeper mainly because everybody though he would be going to Real Madrid. The Two Arsenal full-backs Bellerin(135) & Monreal(119) were the top Defenders in the Fantasy while in the Golden Boot League Sunderland’s van Aanholt(60 points) & Palace’s Dann(50) were the top scorers. In Mid-Field West Ham’s Payet had a great 1st Season scoring 167 Fantasy points which was 10 more than the other Player who had a smashing Season Leicester City’s Mahrez. Up Front the Fox in the Box Jamie Vardy was last Seasons top Fantasy Player with a tally of 210 points just beating Spur’s ace marksman Harry Kane who clocked up 204 points. How to negotiate roundabouts IF YOU are unsure about the correct way to negotiate roundabouts, here are some simple rules to help you enter and exit roundabouts safely and in the right lane. APPROACHING ROUNDABOUTS It’s important to remember to give way to traffic already on the roundabout. If the roundabout is outside urban areas of towns or cities, keep right. If the roundabout is in a built-up area inside a town or city and the lanes are clearly marked, you should use the lane that best corresponds to the exit you need to take. LEAVING ROUNDABOUTS This causes the most confusion amongst drivers. Which lane to choose? Why do I get beeped at if I’m in the right lane? Drivers must exit roundabouts from the right hand lane, because the only way to leave the roundabout is by turning right. This doesn’t mean we always have to enter the roundabout from the right hand lane. It depends on the exit we need to take. However this simple rule, in practice, can be more complex. Let us see some examples. 1st EXIT RIGHT Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate and exit roundabout. CONTINUING STRAIGHT ON (e.g. 2nd EXIT STRAIGHT AHEAD) Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate prior to exit and leave roundabout. TURNING LEFT OR CHANGING DIRECTION (e.g. 3rd OR FINAL EXIT) Enter roundabout keeping to left hand side lane. Stay in lane until you have passed the exit before your turn off, then change lane by indicating right and giving other road users sufficient time to anticipate your manoeuvre. Don’t forget that drivers circulating in the outside lanes have priority, so use your mirrors to ensure you are not blocking them as you change lanes.
