Dicing with death by Louise Clarke DOZENS OF school children will now have to dice with death every morning on their way to and from school after the Valencia government cut school bus transport. This week the children and parents of San Miguel de Salinas staged a protest against the withdrawal of the school bus from the urbanisation of Ciudad de las Communicaciones and proved just how difficult it will be for the children to walk to school and back every day; not to mention how dangerous. More than 50 children of all ages live on the urbanisation
and the nearby Torrestrella estate. All are now without a school bus after it was withdrawn and parents in the Blue Lagoon and El Galan urbanisations are livid that although their bus has not been withdrawn, a second afternoon bus route has been removed meaning that some secondary school children cannot get bus transport as they are still in lessons! The journey from Ciudad de las Communicaciones would take a small child at least 40 minutes to get to the centre of the village and with the withdrawal of the bus service,
children will no longer qualify for reduced comedor so some parents who cannot afford to put their children in school for lunch would in theory, have to walk to and from the school eight times a day! Even the Director of the Primary School was at the protest to take photos of the children walking precariously along the road, which she told RTN would be sent to the Director of Education in Valencia. Continued from front page “The fact that they have to walk to school is not really the issue,” said Natalie Bacon, who is mum to nine year old twins, Tia and Tyler. “It is the fact that there is no pavement and no street lights. So the older kids, who have to be at school earlier, will have to walk in the dark because they have to be there before 8am.” Some children wore hi-visible jackets as a precaution on the protest walk which was a wise move, especially as traffic on this stretch
of road is particularly heavy; the road is regularly used as a toll avoiding cut through for the AP7. Many HGVs come along this road and RTN witnessed just how close they came to the walking protest. “This is an accident waiting to happen,” commented one parent. It remains to be seen whether the bus service will be resumed, until then the children will have to risk life and limb walking to and from school.
Bishop allows removal of Francoist symbols from Basilica THE BISHOP of the diocese of Orihuela-Alicante, Rafael Palmero, has responded to a request to have Francoist symbols removed from the wall of the Basilica in Aspe. 15 wall plaques commemorating Nationalists that died during the Spanish Civil War were sprayed with red paint recently by an elderly protestor who contended the Nationalist symbols were illegal. In a “cordial and collaborative” meeting between councillors and the bishop it was agreed that the plaques would be removed after consultation with the family of the deceased over an alternative site.

CAM accused of corporate fraud by Jack Troughton ANGRY PROPERTY victim Andrew Wilford has accused CAM Bank of attempting to disguise millions of euros worth of corporate mortgage fraud. Andrew was buying a Murcia home offplan but in 2008 discovered the bank had issued a builder’s mortgage to the developer of the Trampolin Solera complex based on an inflated valuation. The property was later sold to a third party after Andrew and his wife Kate refused to take on the indebted property – and are now fighting to reclaim the 200,000€ they have lost. Last week Andrew, from Colwyn Bay, received another letter from the bank’s customer services department saying his most recent complaint had been forwarded to the correct department. And on Wednesday in further correspondence he outlined to the bank why he held CAM as responsible as the developer for the loss of his Spanish dream home – and how he had joined “the growing list of allegations of mortgage fraud.” Andrew stated the bank builder’s loans were intended to fund construction not be granted over “the total market value” of properties – yet Trampolin Solera properties, including his own villa was almost complete when the money was advanced. PURCHASE “Just by looking at the monies advanced against the properties in question would lead any sane person to question as to whether or not the bank was mortgaging the construction or in fact purchasing the properties in question.” And he said clearly CAM failed to undertake due diligence regarding the development and its loans. He described it as: “A clear case of negligence.” Andrew said he wrote to the bank in 2008
Andrew Wilford
about his claim and advising CAM of employees “complicit” in the “fraud” yet it failed to act under its duty of care. He said he did not understand how CAM “can be so dismissive of this clear case of fraud is not just beyond the comprehension of myself but indeed everyone who has been affected by such frauds committed by the bank. “The litigation piling up against CAM with identical mortgage frauds across the Costa Blanca and doubtless elsewhere in Spain is clear evidence for the world to see of the bank’s failures.” Andrew has already complained to the Bank of Spain and is involved in legal proceedings against the bank and the developer.

Helping hand over tax JAVEA COUNCIL plans to help residents claim a rebate for after years of overpayment of the property tax IBI after values soared illegally in 2006. The ‘rates’ shot up at the height of the property boom and people paid the inflated tax until last year – when Supreme Court ruled they were wrongly inflated. As a result property owners will be able to download a form from the council website www.ajxabia.org or can be collected from the town hall’s public service desk at Avenida Amanecer 2, from 8th October. The claims will be considered by the Ministry of Finance and Public Administration – however, if rejected the town hall has committed help in fighting overturning the decision. Javea itself cannot afford to make rebates without raising taxes but believes the money should come from central government – and has taken legal advice on the subject. The tax for 2012 will be collected from 1st October and will reduced by around half after being based on more realistic 1995 values. Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Finance Oscar Anton is holding a public meeting in English to explain the situation on Tuesday 2nd October at 6pm in the /casa De Cultura.
Phone porn scandal for Torrevieja Councillor IT HAS been reported this week that the mobile phone bill for the Torrevieja Councillor for Public Safety, Eduardo Gil Rebollo, shows that he has been paying nine euros a month for Vodafone’s Live Adult TV Streaming. by Louise Clarke The operator offers six channels of ‘adult’ content including Hustler Hardcore, TV Hotzips and Penthouse. The cost appears on October and November 2011’s invoices for the municipal mobile phone that is assigned to the Councillor. NO TRAINING In response to the claims, the Councillor said he does not use such services and that he has very limited knowledge of computer telephony. He said: “I use the phone to make calls and that is that. I don’t know how to use it properly and I have never had training to use the internet facility on the phone.” He added that he has never gone into porn sites. “I’m not a hypocrite,” he said, “but I have no idea what has been contracted to this phone because I do not receive the bills.” This new mobile phone scandal comes just days after it was revealed that Gil Rebollo’s colleague, Daniel Plaza, the Coun-
Eduardo Gil
cillor for Education and Sports had made 49 calls to prostitution services during the same period of time. Both issues will be debated at today’s (Friday) ‘pleno’ meeting at the Torrevieja Town Hall.
Rajoy addresses the UN IN NEW York Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has requested that the UN General Assembly intervene in the Gibraltar issue and prompt a dialogue between the UK and Spain over sovereignty of The Rock, saying “We have lost too many years.” Talks between Spain and the UK over Gibraltar have remained dormant for ten years. Rajoy called on the United Nations to cancel the Treaty of Utrecht which dates from 1713 and which cedes Gibraltar to Great Britain.

‘Are you confused about the changeover of your private health insurance to another provider? We can help by offering extra special conditions for an easy transfer, similar terms and conditions and a more comprehensive medical directory of Englishspeaking doctors’. Yes this is actually happening, with a national company being taken over by a very large Spanish multinational one, at present with no special expats division. This will mean that most of the Englishspeaking doctors will disappear and you will discover that there will be a far smaller local medical directory. This particular company does not have English speaking personnel - therefore unless you speak Spanish you may find great difficulty when you need to contact them at their head office in Madrid: all their paperwork is in Spanish and to be honest, they will have absolutely no experience within the expat market. Due to the policies being in Spanish, many clients will have no idea of the cover they have or rather don’t have, or the specific conditions of their policy. Should you or your partner become ill, this is obviously a very stressful time and my company appreciates this fact and that is why I personally employ a full time administrator. Mandy is bi lingual with her first language being English and she fully understands how difficult it can sometimes be living in Spain and how people need to have reassurance and guidance when they are worried about their health. She personally will handle appointments for you and any translations
that you require and won’t leave you to face an illness on your own. Therefore I was pleased when our medical health provider was able to offer a solution to be able to allay any fears that you may have of your uncertain future with your current health provider or the takeover. As a company I have worked with Asssa for many years and find their understanding of the different requirements of the expat market is first class and we have a very large portfolio of Asssa clients. I know they appreciate the extra mile that Mandy always goes for them. I am therefore delighted that after many discussions, Asssa have given my company a wonderful alternative which any of the Jennifer Cunningham Offices can assist you with. This has been especially designed for clients wishing to have an alternative to the large multinational company they are automatically being transferred to. As an expat myself, this would personally make me feel very uncomfortable, but with Asssa’s philosophy, which is to ensure complete transparency, you will know exactly what the cover on your policy is. Some of the very specific differences to all other policies include ‘The Age you Join is The Age you Stay’ - how wonderful not to be penalised for ageing, which unfortunately happens to all of us, and also you have ‘Guaranteed for Life’. This means that should you have a serious illness, the policy will not be cancelled for cost, and should your illness return full cover remains in place and this is in bold letters on all of the brochures and propaganda. As I always
advise, the written word is paramount: people may promise you the earth, but unless it’s in writing be very careful. Unfortunately, the expectations of the national company were too great and they under-estimated the ageing population in the expat market and their outgoing costs became prohibitive causing their takeover by a larger company. Asssa are very mindful of this situation occurring and are therefore very careful not to over extend, enabling them to continue to grow with complete security. Their medical directory is very impressive, with as many as possible of the doctors and hospitals being able to communicate with you in your own language and alternatively having translators provided, for your convenience. The process of the transfer via my offices is very straight forward and the policy you will have from Asssa will be very similar to your existing one, and it will just continue on, but with local offices to assist. The health of you and your family is vitally important, especially in a different country to your own. Please may I suggest that you don’t just leave it to chance but try and discover for yourselves what is going on? The fact that you may not have heard from your existing company does not mean that it is not happening - you will either receive a letter in Spanish or you will be automatically transferred on 1st January 2013 - I therefore suggest that you contact Mandy on mandy@jennifercunningham.net 96 646 1690 for more information.

In a blaze of glory The centre is impressive
by Louise Clarke MORE THAN 2000 people attended the inauguration of one of Spain’s biggest commercial centre on Tuesday evening. Zenia Boulevard in Orihuela Costa officially opened to the public in a blaze of glory on Wednesday morning but the evening before businessmen and politicians from all over the region were guests of honour at an event that included stilt walkers and dancers as well as free refreshments. The commercial centre will provide 1800 jobs; a third of which have been taken by people who live in the Orihuela municipality. There are nearly 150 individual shops including favourites such as Primark, Leroy Merlin, Decathalon and H&M. CONGRATULATE The opening was attended by the Alicante Diptuada for Trade, José Monzonis, the Mayor of Orihuela, Monserrate Guillen and MEP Eva Ortiz, along with the heads of the project Eric Deleplanque and Valentin Serrano. Snr Monzonís said that in these hard economic times he could not but congratulate the Immochan group for its commitment and investment in the future for the south of the
province. And Valentin Serrano said that the centre will soon become a place for life and leisure for people of all ages. “This centre,” he said, “is a temple of leisure for all the family.” EXTENSION Meanwhile, Orihuela Councillor for Transport, Martina Scheurer (LV) announced this week that the bus route which connects Torremendo with Torrevieja Hospital will be extended to include the new commercial centre. The line will now have the following route: Entrenaranjos - Torremendo - Torrevieja Hospital - Playa Flamenca Town Hall - Zenia Boulevard. The first bus will be at 7.30am and the second at 11am. Ms Scheurer told RTN: “This extension to the route means that we can provide a service to the citizens of Torremendo and connect them with the city, the coast, the beaches, the hospital and the new commercial centre; likewise for all the Entrenaranjos citizens.” She added: “The contract is already signed and has not involved any extra cost, but is limited to a period of four months so it will depend on the number of users as to whether or not it continues after that period of time.”
Desalination plant to be tested in January EUROPE’S LARGEST desalination plant in Torrevieja is expected to undergo initial test runs in January 2013, providing water to Murcia and Alicante. Completed in 2010, the plant has as yet operated only for suction and diffusion of seawater. The most contentious and difficult phase of construction included the installation of large concrete tubes from the plant, located on the other side of the N332, to the harbour entrance, requiring the sea bed to be dredged by more than two metres. Clashes between the Generalitat Valenciana and the Central Government caused delay as political heavyweights came to blows over the need for such a plant in Torrevieja - these issues further complicated by debate over the environmental impact of a large desalination facility in the area, one Councillor calling it “the equivalent of a nuclear power station in the heart of Torrevieja.”
Water interruption denounced THE ARCANGEL Neighbours Association in San Miguel de Salinas has denounced the town’s new water company after residents were left without water for eight hours last Friday night. A Spokesman for the Association told RTN: “Without any notice whatsoever, many residents of the town were without any water supply from 3pm until 11pm. Neither the company, Gestagua nor the Town Hall attended calls of complaints from the affected residents, which increased uncertainty and unrest within the neighbourhood, especially as they lacked any information as to how long it would last.” The Neighbours Association said that they believe that the privatised water
management, which they say “we pay the price of gold for” is offering a third class service to its customers. The Spokesman added: “The Company is quick to charge the residents the earth for their water supply but when it comes to difficulties, it leaves them to their own fate.” He said that when the service was under municipal management, at least it warned residents in advance so they could deal with the interruption to the water supply accordingly. A Spokesman for Gestagua apologised for any inconvenience caused by the interruption to the water supply last week and said that it got the supply back up and running as soon as it possibly could.

Let’s do it again next year!
Calls for N332 footbridge
Thousands of young people visited the exhibition
by Louise Clarke WITH NEARLY 30 coach loads of young people descending on Torrevieja’s Municipal Entertainment Centre (CMO) it meant a very busy few hours for the exhibitors at last week’s Youth i-Expo. Organised by Viva TV in collaboration with the Torrevieja Town and wholeheartedly supported by RTN, the event was such a success that plans are now being put into place for next year. The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, officially opened the exhibition last Friday morning and was accompanied by the Director General of Valencia’s Instituto de la Juventud (IVAJ) Marcos Sanchís and the Councillor for Youth, Rosario Martinez. ADVICE The fair brought together hundreds
of young people from all over the area and all were able to gather information, support, help and advice from more than 40 exhibitors. This first exhibition was designed to offer the young people aged 12 to 35 years information on many topics including education, employment, health, leisure and free educational opportunities as well as cultural activities, sports and volunteer work. The fair also aimed to promote social inclusion, coexistence and participation of young people, regardless of nationality. The initiative was born from the realisation that a lot of young people, especially expats, encounter serious problems during their school years and afterwards mainly due to the lack of information available to them.
LEISURE ACTIVITIES It is the first time Torrevieja has hosted such an initiative and it impressed the Valancia Director so much that he told RTN that he would like to replicate this in other cities throughout the region. As well as the 40 exhibitors inside the centre, which included representatives from universities, private schools and employers, the Local Development Agency (LDA), the SERVEF employment agency, members of the armed forces and the Department of Health in Torrevieja were also in attendance. There was also a host of leisure activities on display including, break dance, hip hop, cockfighting (which is rapping competitions NOT proper cockfighting), Warhammer competitions, an XBOX 360 party and finger boarding parks.
ORIHUELA MUNICIPAL party CLR has presented a motion at the monthly Town Hall ‘pleno’ meeting this week requiring the immediate installation of a footbridge over the N332 in Orihuela Costa. The party proposes that the footbridge be situated in Playa Flamenca by Rocky’s Bar and Burger King; allowing safe and easy access to the beach for the residents of Alameda del Mar Urbanisation. Party Spokesman, Pedro Mancebo, told RTN that the motion stated that the AIU ‘Gomendio Group’ install the pedestrian walkway over the N332 as a matter of urgency. He said: “It is their duty to install this footbridge as it was reflected in the proposed development and is work that should have already been done and for which the delay cannot be justified as it has all the necessary permits.” He added that the absence of the footbridge has created a serious danger to both pedestrians and road users alike and that there have been several near misses during the summer which could have resulted in serious injury or worse, fatalities. He also added that should the company not be forthcoming with the installation, the Town Hall’s Department of Infrastructure has budgeted an amount of 240,000€ to install a footbridge over the N332 because “we need to meet the demands of the residents of Orihuela Costa.”
Illegal immigrant disguised as car seat
A SUBSAHARAN man has disguised himself as a car seat to attempt to gain entry into Spain. In a vehicle carrying two people the right hand passenger was found to be sitting on a double-bottomed car seat that camouflaged a second man enfolded within: the seat looked ‘normal’ at first glance. The immigrant, aged around 20, was handed over to the National Police along with the driver of the car and the passenger, both Moroccans, 21 and 23 years old. So far this year, the Civil Guard in Melilla has located 14 vehicles with double bottoms concealing people and made 22 arrests.

IS IT just me or has anyone else noticed how the eggs in Spain are always cracked. It doesn’t matter how carefully I check the box at the supermarkets for any “leakage” or how delicately they are journeyed back from the supermarket to my kitchen, when I come to open the new box there is always at least one cracked and spilling its contents on to its adjacent buddies. Only last week I carried out my routine check of egg boxes, discarding at least two which had signs of soggy bottoms and selected what I thought was a pristine, crack free selection. I proceeded to take them home, gently and without incident, only to find when I opened the aforementioned box that one had cracked. Normal as this is, what disgusted me on this occasion is that the egg had obviously cracked some time ago and its contents had not only spilled and dried on the other eggs but over time had resulted in a green, furry, rancid mould to cover the bottoms of its neighbours. So foul and disturbing was the smell and sight, the whole box of 12 eggs had to be discarded, leaving me without my desired omelette for dinner and opting for the reliable and comforting cheese on toast. One last point on this subject is also the cost of eggs and how they have risen in price over the last few months, combined with the increase in broken eggs means the once economical dietary option is now becoming a costly choice. Mrs C.H. Icken
Delighted
DEAR NOEL, I would like to put myself forward for the forthcoming competition on 9th October at Alicante. I was delighted to be paired with Martin Collins yesterday as we seemed to dovetail quite well in our round of golf. It was with great delight that we learned that we had won the RTN Open Pairs Trophy. Our prize was the weekend for four at the El Plantio Golf Hotel and we are looking at the possibility of using the voucher very soon. I was very impressed with the President of El Plantio’s offer to give all the players who took part yesterday to a free round of golf. Thank you for your efforts and those of Lloyds Bank International in making yesterday a very enjoyable day. The bonus was winning, but it was enjoyable even before that. Jeff Wiszniewski

Dreams do come true MY FAMILY and I would like to thank ALL those involved in Grant a Wish for doing so much for us. On Friday 30th August, Jody rang me to ask for some more details. A short time later she called again to say that we had been chosen. The children would receive nice presents and we were going to have a fun day at Terra Natura and Terra Agua and to top it all, my daughter would get her school books. As you can imagine we were over the moon. On Saturday, Jody phoned again - this call made me cry. I did not know that Celia from Guardian Angels had also nominated me. Jody had returned to her office and managed to raise the money to finish paying for my husband’s ashes. I am
unable to explain the emotions that went through me, or my family, at that moment. On Monday, Dawn, the editor of RTN, kindly took me to collect the school books. On Wednesday, Jody came over and took us to Terra Natura and Terra Agua where we were treated like VIPs and went behind the scenes. It was amazing to be that close to the animals and to feed them! After lunch we went down to the water park and had loads of fun and when we were ready, Jody took us home. We also were given annual passes and tickets to Terra Mitica. The following day, Jody kindly came with me to collect my husband John’s ashes - exactly one year from the day of the funeral. Jody is
an amazing person and has given me so much support. Once again we would like to thank EVERYONE involved in granting these wishes and we mustn’t forget Jack Troughton, the reporter for handling the interview so well. Let us all now help Grant a Wish make more wishes come true - the next big event is a Fun Day being held in Teulada on 7th October. Be there - it is going to be a great event! Nicola Dunsford-Evans (James and Phoenix) Editors note: Nominations are now being accepted for the Christmas prize. Email grantawish@roundtownnews.com or see their advert on page4.

Cut off because others didn’t pay their bill MORE THAN a hundred residents of the Arabi Park apartment block in L’Alfas del Pi were furious this week when Iberdrola cut off the electric supply to 132 apartments following non-payment by just 20 defaulters.
Tempers flare as angry residents confront defaulters
by Jan Gamm The block was built some 30 years ago and shares a communal meter as individual meters would have been too expensive: domestic counters are installed on each floor. Some of the bills outstanding range from 6,000€ to 9,000€ which accumulated over months and years of delay before the debtors could be prosecuted. The community of residents have paid some of the charges to avoid being cut off but now cannot keep up with the payments. Some of the homes cut off are occupied by elderly residents and also young children. Iberdrola refused to speak to RTN on the subject.
Community unites to save its train service RESIDENTS, UNIONS, businessmen and local traders have united in an effort to save the train line from Xativa to Alcoy, currently under threat of closure. The community contends that the railway is vital to the development and structuring of the central regions of Valencia and that its disappearance would be a serious setback for the territory despite revenue from its 154,000 passengers per year barely covering 20% of the operation costs. Campaigners want to not only save the line but also have existing facilities upgraded and the line extended to Alicante or Villena.

And in an age threatened by rowdy passengers, terrorists and hijackings, is it any wonder? The human mind tends to work on the ‘What if?’ principle. What if on the day I’m flying, a passenger suddenly jumps out of his seat and threatens to take control of the plane? As highly unlikely as it might be, that is just what a phobia is: irrational. And the fear of flying encompasses other anxieties: For however long the duration of your flight is, you cannot smoke. Only a smoker can describe the consuming panic which can set in at the prospect of a prolonged length of time without a cigarette. And a 20-year, 30 cigarette-a-day habit costing upwards of 50,000€ also costs you your health, with more than 120,000 lives are lost per year in the UK because of smoking – 1/3 of cancer deaths stem from the habit. Are you ready to be free from the addiction? In the past you might have failed having tried false cigarettes; patches; nicotine sprays; gum… they don’t work because you’re simply switching the habit. Fast Track Hypnosis is effectively the ‘mind detective’ that seeks the root cause of your addiction and solves it, leaving you free to lead your life without a filthy habit dogging your steps. And with the Fast Track Stop Smoking session, you could be leading that new life within thirty minutes! It
works quickly because of my renowned Fast Track Hypnosis technique. Fast doesn’t mean ‘substandard’: it means ‘condensed’ - all of the traditional techniques combined with modern technology and new procedures, changing the way the world views hypnotherapy. WEIGHT PROBLEMS In the age of cheap travel, cuts are being made everywhere by airlines and one area where this is literally being felt is in the size of the seats which have dramatically decreased in size - for those of us with a weight problem this can be severely embarrassing and uncomfortable. In extenuating circumstances, the companies actually demand that two seats be purchased, dampening self-esteem and confidence - it is also an exercise in humiliation, made worse by long haul flights. There is nothing worse than being overweight and hating your appearance. Unfortunately, sugar is as potent a chemical as nicotine and eating can become an addiction. Fast Track Hypnosis can transform the way you view food within your mind. Like the Stop Smoking session, the Weight Loss session also takes just thirty minutes and works by changing your perception and your relationship with food. The Fast Track Weight Control Session
breaks the triggered tendencies to reach for unhealthy food and stops you in your tracks. By forming a new relationship with food and junk food, you’ll find it remarkably easy to lose weight. These patterns were created during formative years and they can be very difficult to break but Fast Track Hypnosis digs deep to resolve harmful issues. Suggestion therapy changes your attitude to food and also activity: you’ll cease snubbing salads and will fancy hopping into your trainers to pop out for a quick jog! If you’re afraid of flying because you have a genuine phobia a more in-depth treatment is necessary but with the remarkable precision of Fast Track Hypnosis it still only takes four sessions to turn over a brand new leaf. Unlike traditional hypnotherapy, which can take upwards of twelve sessions or more, Fast Track Hypnosis works speedily. Don’t wait for New Year to make a New Years’ Resolution! Do it now! Make that change now and by the time New Year comes around you’ll be flying as though you were born to it, have stopped smoking and will have lost a hefty amount of weight! If you’d like more information about the above, contact Alan Gilchrist on 659 229 408: Alternatively, read some of the testimonials at www.alangilchrist.com

Room 101 Spain: By
Chris Marshall Expat blogger www.almerimarlife.com
Little Britain ONCE AGAIN I am writing the column ‘on the road’ but this time no cats or dogs involved - just the Fat Boy and me: so two Fat Boys then! Am currently riding the Harley back to the UK and after 540 miles on Day 1 I am checked into the hotel at the Puerto de Barcelona Services. At 53€ including secure parking for the bike it is excellent value - highly recommended. 540 miles and 10 hours in the saddle gives you lots of time to think, and my mind has been drifting back to all the ideas we had about living in Spain before we moved out. Using the Harley to explore Spain was high on the list, as was embracing the Spanish way of life. In fact if I were to list the Top 10 expectations/ideas/hopes not one would include anything remotely English.
To be clear I am not one that left the UK because it was going to the dogs, or because I didn’t like it. My reason, simply, was that I felt the balance between how hard you had to work compared to what you got for your money was disproportionate, bearing in mind we were Surrey-based. I just wanted to break free of the treadmill and focus more on the things that were important to me, or to be more accurate to find something that was important to me. We have been fortunate to achieve that with the ALStrays project and with our own cats, but riding up through Spain, stopping for coffees, tapas and an end-of-day beer I was reminded of just how little of my time is really spent in a Spanish environment. I have only myself to blame but I do
‘English’ done on a shoestring here in Spain is little like the original
reckon that the proliferation of English style establishments have contributed. When we first moved over there wasn’t an ‘English Bar’ or shop for miles, and with respect to those that have opened it was, for me, better that way. The irony is that with two trips back to the UK each month I have found that I have really enjoyed my old local pub from school days, and meeting up with
old friends. ‘English’ done well is hard to beat; ‘English’ done on a shoestring here in Spain is little like the original. So 450 miles into the ride the decision was made: Room 101 Spain this week, and for the last time, is Little Britain as I am going to take a sabbatical from ‘all things English’ and revisit the reason we moved to live in Spain and make sure I make the most of the opportunity.

Wet,wet,wet: the sequel
Watts In Britain By
Paul Watts
DID YOU know that on Monday, some parts of Britain experienced the equivalent of a month’s rainfall in 24 hours? Yup, we did and we had 70mph winds that caused disruption and lengthy delays to rail services in the South West, the Midlands, Northern England and Wales. But being the stoical nation that we are we weren’t down hearted. I don’t know if there is any connection but one of the comedians at The Apollo was doing a Saturday night skit on the political party conference season; and she reckoned that what we needed was a lot of rain to dampen the hot air of “bullsh**ing politicians”. Well, we’ve certainly had it! Tuesday morning the ITV weatherman told us that “Some areas saw up to 50mm of rain up to 18:00 BST, and a further 25mm to midnight, with 5mm falling every hour in many areas.” Over 200 homes have been flooded and train services disrupted as heavy rain continues across parts of the UK. About 80 areas in England and Wales are being warned to expect flooding, with northern England the worst affected. “Some areas could see 50mm (2in) of rain - an average fortnight’s worth - by the day’s end,” the Met Office reported. David Jordan, director of operations at the Environment Agency, said: “Our teams have been out around the clock over the last few days to minimise the risks and prepare for flooding. He added, “We urge people to keep up to date with the weather forecast and remain prepared for flooding in their area, sign up to receive free flood warnings and stay away from dangerous flood water.” Well Dave, I didn’t take that advice and look where I ended up; the wrong side of a flooded underpass - I had to walk an extra three miles to get home. So how bad is it over here? Here is a quick round up from the BBC: “In England, the Environment
Agency has issued 82 flood warnings - indicating flooding is expected - for the Midlands, the North East and North West.” Let me tell you, dear reader, it’s flippin damp in Tamworth today – our two rivers have decided to do a spot of river twinning. The River Anker and the River Tame have now become a single waterway which we’ll call the Tamker or Ankame or any other combination of the merged river names that you may care to invent. Back to the BBC, for our round Britain round-up: “In Scotland, there are 10 flood warnings, mostly for the Borders, while in Northern Ireland there is no flood warning system but the Met Office has warned of persistent rain and gales.” My La Nucia neighbours, Dave and Sheenagh, are probably worrying about their homeland. However, according to the Beeb, “there is one flood alert in place for Wales.” Hmmm, looks like Wales isn’t getting it too bad, eh? But the BBC did add that “there are 150 less serious flood alerts - indicating flooding is possible - for many parts of England and Wales.” I do worry about those sort of through-away expressions that carry the ambiguous ‘less serious’ connotations. They used it in East Sussex back in 2000 and a day later my town, Lewes was doing an impression of Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, or in this case under the river… And I’m old enough to remember Michael Fish’s ‘not serious’ assertion that there’ll be no hurricane. So as Tuesday ends we here in Blighty will go to bed with the news that the “Met Office has issued amber severe weather warnings (i.e. a warning to be prepared for severe weather) in the East Midlands; north-east England; north-west England; Wales; West
Midlands; and Yorkshire and Humber.” Now, just in case you do not live in any of the above areas a helpful little coda was also added: “Less severe yellow warnings (indicating that people should be aware) are in place for much of the rest of the UK.” If you had gone on-line Tuesday night and looked at the flood alert map, you’d be hard pressed to find anywhere ‘in the rest of the UK’ that actually didn’t have a warning of some colour! Watts in Britain, if it’s Friday we made it through the rest of the week okay...

Heading for Hollywood MEMBERS OF Hollywood’s elite A List were out on location and busy filming a new blockbuster on the Costa Blanca this week. by Jack Troughton A star was born at Monte Pego as a luxury villa played a key role in ‘The Counselor’ starring Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz, her real life husband Javier Bardem, and Michael Fassbender. And a small army of technicians and extras descended on the Marina Alta urbanisation to film scenes at the palatial home. A convoy of mini buses ferried crew and actors up the steep mountainside from the car park – the tarmac covered by lorries and trailers as it was turned into Tinsel Town for the three days of filming. Despite the American spelling of the title, The Counselor is directed by Englishman Ridley Scott, known for his ground-breaking films such as Alien, Blade Runner, gladiator,
American Gangster and the most recent version of Robin Hood starring Russell Crowe. The film, due to be released next year, is about a lawyer, played by Fassbender, who, looking to make some easy money enters the seedy world of drug taking but soon finds himself over his head. LONDON Brad Pitt – who was given his first major role by Ridley Scott in Thelma and Louise – is said to relish another part as a ‘bad guy’ and with his co-stars has already been filming in East London and Alicante’s City of Light studios. RTN briefly visited the set but was politely asked to leave by security men. They quickly pulled up the drawbridge – closing the electric gates of the villa. The building itself is very

long. No one knew anything about it until the lorries started arriving on Monday. “The first filming was at sunrise on Tuesday morning and the extras arrived at 5am. Obviously everyone finds the whole thing very exciting and hopes to spot a star.”
Lighting up the Basilica
GAUDI’S MAGNIFICENT Basilica Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, still to be completed after 130 years’ building, was bathed in light last Friday as part of the Merce Festival. The ‘Montreal Signe Ode a la Vie’ or Ode to Life light show by Canadian company ‘Moment Factory’ lit up the church, highlighting the exquisite detail of the city’s iconic symbol. When Gaudi died in 1926 the church was less than a quarter finished, reliant on private donations. It was interrupted by the Spanish Civil Photos War and construction resumed in the 1950s. Completion in 2026 is to by AP coincide with the centennial of Gaudi’s death.

HAH chill out at birthday party by Patricia Thompson TO CELEBRATE their 2nd birthday party, HAH volunteers and friends got together on the beach to celebrate in the sea and the sun. A few games were played, and as the wine flowed, these got even sillier! Sack races, three legged races and even an obstacle course were ‘enjoyed’ by some, much to the amusement of the others and onlookers, who all fell about laughing at some of the antics. A ‘Jacobs Table’ where people bring a dish to share, groaned under the weight of the food and was actually enough to feed an army such was the quantity and choice. This was just a chill out day, not a fund raising day, for the volunteers who work so hard all year, and have helped to make HAH the success it is today.

Ducks raced for Dayron
The Lions sold more than 1500 ducks for the event
by Louise Clarke THE FIRST annual duck race organised by the Torrevieja Costa Lions Club and sponsored by Talleres Yogesh of Almoradi, and The TV Choice Magazine, was held last Sunday at the Paraje Natural Soto del Molino in Formentera Del Segura. The Lions had for many years planned a Duck race but could never guarantee a river to be flowing after a long hot summer. However a perfect location in Formentera was found in El Paraje. Around three hundred people came along to witness the event and what a great time they had. There was four hours of splendid entertainment with Pete Hull performing music to suit all tastes. The TKO Roadshow livened up the afternoon with a great mixture of music that suited both the TKO Gold and TKO FM families, the Lions greatly appreciated the attendance of Dave Knights, Darren James and Barry Newlove and wish them all every success for the future.
To round off the barbecue meal, Costa Cones were on hand with the only ice cream van on the Costa Blanca, much to the excitement and pleasure of the crowd. More than 1500 tickets were sold for the duck race before it even started which was due to the great work done by the Lions and a few friends including Dave Goben and Roger Troutman. GOOD CHASE
The excellent JB Brass, under the direction of Ian Tinsley, performed for the throng and once again proved why they are the best brass band outside of Yorkshire. The barbecue was a huge attraction and Extinguished Firefighter, Dave Graham and his wife Chris worked tirelessly alongside Lions to ensure that there would be no need to call out the Bomberos.
The race started at 4pm on the dot and some of the better trained ducks moved off smartly and set the pace, followed closely by a closing pack of around 50 ducks tailgating using the slipstream to their advantage. As the front runners approached the finishing line duck number 95 was well ahead finishing in first place, followed by 1149 and 775, however 1149 decided to head for the reeds allowing 775 to finish in second place eight duck lengths ahead of 1149. The following pack all put up a good chase but too late to finish in the winners enclosure. The purpose of the Duck Race was to assist young Dayron Blanc and help towards his treatment and therapy which will hopefully at some time in the near future improve his quality of life. Lion President, Janette Bennett, confirmed to RTN that more than 3500€ was raised for Dayron as a result of the event and would like to thank everyone involved for their support.
By Jack Troughton LABOUR INTERNATIONAL’S continued support for the Spanish Republican cause and the role of the International Brigades during the Civil War was marked by a special presentation at a recent lunch. At a Costa Blanca Branch lunch at Casa Pinet, Taberna, members were presented with a plaque and an inscribed Republican flag by Vicente Pedrero, of the Forum for the Historical Memory of Spain. The owner of the restaurant Geronimo Pinet, a staunch Republican himself, had tipped off the forum about the branch’s support for the ideals of the cause. Pictured is Mr Pedrero (left) presenting branch member Kevin Bruton – who also
interpreted for the visitor – with the plaque. The next branch meeting is at L’Ancora Tennis Club, Javea, on Tuesday 9th October at 2.30pm. All Labour supporters are welcome.

HELPing the kids get back to school The new school year is expensive for parents in Spain with the biggest outlay being on text books, the average spend around 300€ per child.
Reps of both associations outside the HELP office in San Miguel
by Louise Clarke In the current economic crisis, many families cannot afford to buy expensive school books and that is where the HELP Association comes in. As reported recently in RTN, the HELP Association Vega Baja continues to work with San Miguel’s Arcángel Neighbours Association. On discovering the extent of the problem for families with children of school age within the municipality they offered to contribute financial support specifically for school books. This week the HELP Association presented the Neighbours Association with a 3,000€ donation which will go directly towards the
purchase of school exercise and text books and also pens and pencils. SUPPORT A Spokesman for the Arcángel Neighbours Association told RTN: “We would publically like to thank the HELP Association Vega Baja on behalf of the families who find themselves in an economic crisis. The support and integration between the two associations continues to strengthen for the benefit of those in the community that need it. We are all very proud and grateful for this contribution.”
Spanish courses a hit for foreign residents MORE THAN 140 foreign residents from the towns of Algorfa, Jacarilla, Redován and San Miguel de Salinas have enrolled in Spanish courses provided by the Mancommunidad la Vega. The courses start next week and are intensive with three different levels of ability. Each level will have an average of thirty hours’ study and are being supported by the Provincial Government of Alicante. The courses are just part of the different projects that the Mancommunidad la Vega has to aid adaptation and social integration for foreign residents and all projects are available through the AMICS offices which are located in each of the municipalities. The Mancommunidad la Vega has residents from 80 different countries living within them. And of the 22,803 registered voters in those four towns, 44.93% are foreign residents, which make Spanish courses like the ones offered by the agency very significant indeed.
New home for Showgroup FOLLOWING AN appeal in RTN two weeks ago in which the Torrevieja Showgroup asked for help in their quest for a new venue in which to be able to rehearse and possibly put on a production, they are happy to announce that after a huge response, they have secured an excellent location. Sandy from the Showgroup told RTN: “We would like to thank everyone who kindly offered us use of their premises and also to the new owners of the former Los Arcos bar and restaurant for allowing us continued storage for the present. The restaurant has had a complete new makeover and is now open and serving international cuisine and we wish them every success with their business.” The Showgroup is now holding rehearsals at Sakos in El Limonar, Torrevieja on Fridays from 2pm until 4pm. Sandy added: “We would like to thank management and staff for a warm
welcome and for allowing us use of their excellent facilities.” The group is always looking for new members to join, from actors to backroom people and anyone who may have the ability to be a music and sound technician working with their modern equipment. If you think that this may be you please go along and join the group at rehearsals or phone Sandy on 96 671 36 14 or Jan on 96 618 97 41. by Jack Troughton A DAY packed with fun for all the family is guaranteed at the Grant A Wish charity fund-raising day in Teulada on Sunday 7th October. Organisers have created a unique and safe ‘children’s park’ packed and attractions to keep the younger ones happy – featuring Mickey Mouse, a bouncy castle, a children’s entertainer and face painting. There will also be a number of popular sideshows – the suspicion is grownups will want a go too – and the opportunity to try uni-cycling, juggling, donkey rides, quad-biking, and a penalty shootout. Naturally there is a sweet stall and an ice-cream van has been hired – filled with 99s, chocolate dips and slush pup-
pies, while adults can enjoy the bar and the food hall opens at 1pm. And more than 30 enthusiastic volunteers from the European Kids Association are ready to help out as youngsters get the opportunity to play and win prizes. Doors open at The Salon Canor Teulada at 10.30am and the ‘something for everyone’ event continues until 7.30pm. Second rescue centre to open next month by Louise Clarke EXCITING TIMES are ahead for the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre as they plan to open their second centre next month within Villa Vera, Daya Vieja. Sue Weeding, co-founder of Easy Horse Care told RTN: “Our young, fit horses will move to Villa Vera where they will be schooled and used at the riding centre whilst the older horses and donkeys and those needing medical care will remain at our Centre in Rojales. This will also give us much needed space for future rescues.” Daya Vieja’s Mayor, Rafa Vives Pertusa, is fully supporting the project and is behind the charity and the work they are doing in trying to eradicate animal cruelty and neglect. He told RTN: “I think the activity of the Rescue Centre is very special for the province and Villa Vera has optimum conditions to make this even more special.”
CAREER The Villa Vera site will also become an educational centre where students will be able to study for their ABRS and BHS equestrian qualifications. “We will be aiming to be the only BHS exam centre in Spain and no where in the Costa Blanca offers BHS exam training,” Sue explained. “The BHS qualifications are recognised as one of the best for employment world wide. Previously, anyone wanting a career with horses had to go back to the UK to get the BHS training.” Sue added: “There will be pony club activities but we also want to throw open the doors to groups, the underprivileged children, vets seminars and clinics. It will be the place to learn.” The Mayor of Daya Vieja has formalised an agreement with Easy Horse Care in allowing them to use the premises and hopes it will

Herbs in your Spanish garden by
Clodagh & Dick Handscombe Practical gardeners and authors
NO INLAND or coastal garden in Spain should be without herbs whether you are a resident or absentee gardener. They have so many uses and can be planted in the open garden, in containers/window boxes or in terracotta herb barrels. Apartment as well as villa dwellers can therefore easily grow and benefit from a collection of herbs. The benefits are as follows: Many varieties of the perennial herbs such as lavenders, rosemary, thymes, sages, chives and bay etc are naturalised Spanish plants and are therefore easily established. Most importantly they are among the most frost and drought resistant plants. Many annual herbs such as basil, parsley, and dill can be raised from seed or purchased as small plants each spring and are reasonably easy to care for in semi shaded positions. Interesting collections can be built up. For instance there are many varieties of mint and over 800 varieties of sage and many of these flower in the autumn. Wherever planted they can be regularly trimmed for using in
salads, cooked dishes and for healthy infusions. Lamb chops or shanks coated with garlic and freshly chopped rosemary, or fresh basil with pasta and oregano chopped over slices of freshly harvested tomatoes soaked in virgin olive oil can’t be beaten for taste. Nor can a poleo menta made from freshly harvested leaves. Planted along paths, within mixed flower beds, on a rockery or in a dedicated herb garden their leaves and flowers add perfume to the garden, which in turn attract many species of butterflies. Herbs can be harvested for hanging in bunches or mixing into potpourris to provide natural aromatherapy effects on the naya or in the house. Co-planted on the vegetable plot they can be useful attractors of beneficial insects (rosemary and lavender), in attracting pests away from crops ( sage, dill, fennel and coriander), the basis of natural insecticides ( garlic) and fungicides ( horsetail) and the basis of valuable natural fertilizers(comfrey, borage and nettle). If we sprain a muscle mountain walking or gardening we find that a dilute rue infusion is a quick acting gardeners’ remedy as is a comfrey poultice. One or two stevia plants will provide through its leaves a pleasant alternative to sugar. What other type of garden plants can be of so much benefit for a relatively little outlay! If you have inherited a rough coastal patch, a mountainside or woodland full of naturally growing herbs you have a head start on others! Part five of our book ‘Your Garden in Spain’ describes and
Clodagh and Dick Handscombes books can be obtained from bookshops or by mail order from info@santanabooks. com or 952-48-58-38, www.gardeninginspain.com or Amazon. In the UK the books can be ordered through bookshops or for some more conveniently by a freephone call to 0845-260-4505 which is the The Royal Horticultural Society Bookshop at Wisley Gardens in Surrey. © Clodagh and Dick Handscombe www.gardeninginspain.com
illustrates the most popular 25 herb plants. Many can be easily propagated at almost any time of the year to increase your number of plants inexpensively or as gifts for friends. Success only requires a fertile free draining gritty non clayey soils and potting composts, regular watering of perennials until established and daily summer watering of herbs in containers and a regular ‘short back and sides’ to stop them becoming leggy and woody. Some herbs such as mint and the wonderful scarlet-flowered pineapple sage can spread quickly so plant them where you are happy for them to expand: plant in large containers sunk into the ground or keep in a large container near the kitchen door. If like us you become a herb enthusiast its worth sending off for the Chiltern Seeds catalogue (info@chilternseeds.co.uk, 0044 1229 581137) which lists many varieties of Mediterranean herbs not found in Spanish garden centres. Semillas Silvestres based in Cordoba also have a useful seed list but unfortunately for many all their material is in Spanish. For the enthusiast contact Cultidelta for a copy of their extensive plant internet catalogue.

Another day in the life of Flatpaxabia IT’S 8AM and the vans are moving out of Javea – heading for IKEA Murcia. An hour and three quarters on the road means they will arrive by 9.45am, just in time for a drink, check the shopping lists and ready to be through the doors at 10am when the store opens. Into the store, the shoppers head off in different directions with their shopping lists prepared with military precision– each client is colour coded and each area of the store is colour coded – one digit of one reference number means a client would take delivery of an incorrect item. Some hours later the shoppers find themselves in the famous ‘aisle 27’ where they have spent the day shopping and storing their trolleys – a trolley or several for each client – each item carefully marked with the client’s name. During the shopping time they may have made many phone calls back to Rosanne in the office for many different reasons – the main reason being
8am and Bob sets off
that the shoppers have found an item out of stock - to give the client the opportunity of choosing an alternative item or keeping their item on the FX ‘on-going’ shopping list - which means FX will keep shopping for this item until it becomes available. Then 15-20 trolleys (on average) move to the cash point. After all these years of building up friendships with the staff at IKEA Bob finds them very helpful and they frequently open up a till exclusively for FX. The trail of trolleys gradually moves forward and through to the other side. Bob collects the ‘pedidos’ (orders) and then all the trolleys are taken from inside the store into the loading area, ready to load onto the vans: “In the summer time we are often loading in temperatures of up to 46º – it’s hot work! “At loading time we often get approached by people asking about our services, asking if we have room for just one more sofa, or just taking our details to save them the trip next time!”
Loading up for the journey home
The eagerly awaited items ready for delivery
A couple of hours later, the vans are unloaded back in Javea before re-loading with clients’ orders due for delivery the next day. Clients are always pleased to see the FX van with a beautiful piece of furniture emerging: “We unpack, assemble and clear away all packaging – leaving a finished job is always very satisfying – we still really enjoy what we do!” As many of the RTN readers know, FX started with an idea by Bob and Rosanne five years ago, “it’s been a wonderful five years watching our business grow from strength to strength, and this last year, with the opening of our new office/showroom, we are busier than we have ever been. We are working at a level beyond our wildest dreams when we started off. We remain passionate about what we do and treat each day as a new challenge.” So remember Flatpaxabia goes to IKEA so you don’t have to: We Shop - We Deliver - We Assemble. Hitting the bottom and time to buy
I’M ONE of those people who always seem to miss
Customer Care out when it comes to hitting the right time to buy at Ábaco and sell. I tried to sell my house in the UK just as
the 1990s property slump took hold and then chose 2008 to put another house on the market. Watching your asking price go into free fall is soul destroying. It’s a feeling that too many would-be sellers of Spanish property have experienced recently. But have we reached the bottom? For those wanting to buy a house in Spain that’s been the million dollar, or at least the thousand euro, question. Until now the advice was generally ‘wait it could reduce further’. However, we are now sensing a mood out there that seems to be backed up by market experts. As further reductions can’t be assumed, you might as well buy now. People who have been waiting in anticipation of further reductions are getting itchy feet. There is only so long that you can defer your retirement or holiday home. There is also the sense that vendors have dropped their prices as far as they can. Many have turned to renting out their property or simply have decided to refurbish and stay put. There’s even a little hope coming from Spanish Property Insight newsletter as the headline ‘Small increase in expat residents buying homes in Spain’
catches my eye. For once there is a line graph which appears to have finished its plummet to the bottom and instead indicates that house purchase is on the up, if rather slowly. One of the reasons for this may have been the reduction last year in VAT on new build and off-plan property from 8% to 4%. This reduction can represent a sizeable saving for potential purchasers. It is likely that we will see more people deciding to buy in the next few months as they become aware that this category of VAT will jump from 4% to 10% on January 1st 2013. It is worth remembering at this point that the VAT reduction only applies to new build. Second hand property or resale does not carry VAT but you do have to pay transfer tax of 7% and who knows if austerity measures might not lead to an increase in this at some point in the near future. My past experiences suggest that property speculating is not in my genes. However, if I had the money and the inclination and didn’t own a home here already, I’d be very tempted to buy. With decent starter properties available now from 30,000€ upwards you can enjoy your retirement or holiday home without waiting any longer. If you are interested in purchasing or selling a property in Spain our conveyancing department will be happy to help.

Personal injury law
claiming compensation for accidents, personal injury… claims for accidents inside a shop or supermarket in Spain by
Carlos Baos
of White & Baos Abogados English & Spanish Solicitors
I AM seeking the advice of a Spanish lawyer specialising in compensations for accidents and personal injury law in Spain. On August of this year, while I was shopping in a well-known supermarket in the Alicante area, I slipped on some sort of liquid on the floor and broke my hip. The shop’s insurance company understands that they are not responsible and thus is not willing to pay any compensation. Is this true? Is the supermarket responsible? Can I claim compensation? In principle the shop or supermarket will have the obligation to pay compensation if the Judge understands that the damage/injury caused was due to their negligence, in
accordance with article 1902 of the Spanish Civil Code which is the basis for ‘non-contractual responsibility or fault and negligence liability’ and states: Whoever causes damages to another by action or omission intervening fault or negligence is obliged to repair the damage. Therefore in order to establish the obligation to pay compensation the following facts must be proven: An action or omission having as consequence harm or damages: We must make sure that it can be understood that the supermarket employees did not fulfill their duty and obligations of having the supermarket floors clean and free of any hazards for shoppers and customers. In second place there is a ‘subjective element’: that is, we must be able to prove that the shop / supermarket is responsible. Even though there was no intention to harm or injure anyone, the fact is that the damage was caused by an inexcusable negligence. It must be ‘cause-effect’: that is, the injury suffered must be consequence of the fall and the fall must be consequence of the negligence of the supermarket employees. This means that we must be able to prove that you slipped because of the liquid and this fall caused the injury we are claiming for, having no previous wounds or injuries on the hip, etc.
In an effort to keep our readers informed, it is good for you to know that compensation will not always be awarded in Spain for the fact of having an accident in a public place but the above listed elements must be proven in order to claim compensation. In a matter very similar to yours the Provincial Court of the Balearic Islands -Section 3 (Audiencia Provincial de Islas Baleares (Sección 3ª) on its Court Order No 356/2010 of the 30th of September ordered the supermarket to pay compensation to a lady who slipped and fell on a puddle of milk spilled on the supermarket floor since it was understood by the judge that the store should have the necessary cleaning means and signs to avoid any hazards and dangerous situations. The Judge also understood that with so many different products being handled and sold in the shop there is always the risk of breakage and shedding but the shop did not act diligently as it failed to clean up or warn of any danger nor did it take the necessary precautions to avoid the danger derived from walking through an area with a puddle of milk on the floor. If you or someone you know is going through a similar situation then please do not hesitate to contact us, we will be more than pleased to assist you.

Proud to be associated with Grant a Wish
Peaks and troughs By Jack Troughton EXCHANGE RATES rose and fell over the summer before the troubled euro settled “mid-range” following intervention and the “big bazooka” of the European Central Bank. Sterling reached a high of around 1.29 against the single currency but slid back to just under 1.232 as the ECB began buying sovereign debt of beleaguered Eurozone nations – allowing countries to raise finance at affordable levels as yields on bonds, effectively the interest rate, fell. Questions over the legality of the policy of “whatever it takes” to save the euro meant its value fell back and has for the moment settled at the 1.257 mark against the pound. David Kerns, a market analyst with foreign exchange specialist Moneycorp, said the markets did not like the EU and ECB moves being questioned. “Things are certainly not as bad for the euro as they were at the start of the summer,” he told RTN. “But every kind of initiative discussed and suggested by Europe and the ECB came under scrutiny after the initial euphoria as people questioned the legalities of what was proposed. “And we find ourselves now, as the markets question the legality of the decisions, in mid-range. Nothing exciting is going on.” David, who is also Moneycorp’s dealing manager for private clients, said at present it was difficult to estimate how the exchange rate would change in the longer term. SHOOTS “Optimists say the euro is coming back and the so-called green shoots in the UK should strengthen sterling on the back of good news – that would be very nice instead of an
exchange rate settled on which currency is the weakest.” He said the UK’s position had improved slightly and, although at 8.1% unemployment remained “uncomfortably high”, recent data suggested jobs were being created but there were problems on the high street, JJB Sports not likely to be the last company to call in the administrators. David said the manufacturing sector appeared to be strengthening, and while construction was below targets, the service industry was expanding well. However, he said there were suggestions government borrowing could miss its target of £120 billion by £30 billion with August figures particularly bad. “However, you do get peaks and troughs.” On the flip side, he said while Gross Domestic Product for the second quarter were a 0.5% negative “there is now hope for green shoots in the third quarter, with GDP being either flat or showing a small growth – that would be very encouraging. The figures are due in October.” David said the Eurozone economic performance remained “extremely weak” despite the decline having been checked. POWER He said the German ‘powerhouse’ was under the microscope after business confidence appeared to be ebbing away – with little investment or job creation. “The overall expectation for the GDP of the Eurozone is for it to slip into recession. Overall unemployment remains at a historic high of 11.3% - Spain as 25% and Greece 23%. That is very, very uncomfortable and in Spain, pretty dire.” However, he said the Euro value improved with the “double whammy” of the ECB intervention and the German Constitutional Court ruling using the available 500 billion
euros of Stability Mechanism Fund was legal. And across the pond, the US Federal Reserve decision to “aggressively” use quantitative easing to buy bank mortgage securities – making new home loans available and affordable – had also increased the value of the euro rise against the dollar, and sterling fall against the single currency. David said the German central bank continued to have “niggles” about the country’s role in rushing to rescue Eurozone neighbours. “The bank feels nations need to feel the pain of austerity.” Further, he said there was the slight unease that Greece’s debt was not being reduced and she needed to borrow a further 15 billion euros. “What’s 15 billion between friends? The debt is moving in the wrong direction and there are still nerves about Greece being able to service its debt.”

Euro survival is a must Prudential International considers the European economic outlook THE CENTRAL question for European investors is whether they believe in Scenario A where the Euro hangs together or in Scenario B where it all falls apart. It is going to be one or the other and we firmly believe that Scenario A is far more likely. That is partly because the price to be paid in the event of Scenario B is so severe and so significant that it cannot be allowed to happen. But there is a strong positive argument to be made for investment growth. Investors believe that current earnings by European corporations are stronger than predicted future earnings and that that equities are cheap. This is despite the fact that earnings expectations have already been downgraded. The bond markets are very low and expensive and our Portfolio Management Group would not want to be invested there. The market reaction to European Central Bank President Mario Draghi’s pledge to do “whatever it takes” to save the Euro is a demonstration of what is likely to happen if the Euro does survive. Pan European markets gained between eight and nine per cent following the remarks which were supported by the German and Italian Governments. Once a solution is found equity markets should return to improved valuations. Politicians and economists recognise that a solution needs to
European Central Bank President Mario Draghi
be found but need to persuade electorates and specifically the German electorate. Of course the detail is yet to emerge on the specific actions that will save the Euro and it is impossible to put a time frame on it. Volatility is here to stay and there will continue to be bad days. There are three major issues facing the European markets – the need to recapitalise both banks and Governments; the low levels of growth; and the high costs of borrowing in Italy and Spain. All can be dealt with and we will see more signs of how the authorities will tackle them in the coming weeks.
Your money matters questions and answer TANYA MARTIN, Javea asks: My husband and I have £60,000 in premium bonds. We’ve not won much from them and wonder if £60,000 could be better invested somewhere else? Answer: In the draw, the chance of winning a million is over 40 billion to 1. Each month, there are over 1.7 million prizes given out of between £25 and £1 million but only one £1 Million prize. You don’t risk the money you put in, only the interest you would have received. However, the state now guarantees every UK regulated savings account up to £85,000 per person, per institution. In Spain this equates to 100,000€ in a Spanish account or sterling equivalent Premium Bonds are not tax efficient in Spain. We would be able to advise on a safe alternative to premium bonds with either a fixed or variable return based on your personal circumstances or you could just wait for ‘the big one’.
More staff to scrutinise tax affairs of the UK richest INDIVIDUALS WITH assets of more than £1m face a new crackdown on tax avoidance, Lib Dem Treasury Chief Secretary Danny Alexander has revealed. The number of people working in the Affluence Unit (AU) of HM Revenue and Customs is to increase from 200 to 300, to cope with the additional workload. Previously, the unit only scrutinised the tax affairs of people with assets and property of more than £2.5m Mr Alexander told the Mail on Sunday the wealthiest “should pay more.” HMRC has also already launched the Offshore Co-Ordination Unit (OCU) which looks to “fully exploit the increasing amount of offshore information at HMRC’s disposal, including bank account data.” In October last year, HMRC announced that it was seeking to recover £7bn per annum of tax lost through evasion and avoidance over the next four years.
In general the pan-European economy is in reasonable shape – certainly when compared with other economies such as the UK, the US and Asian economies. If investors have a longterm investment horizon and the ability to hold on they will be a lot better off although the ride may be bumpy in the medium-term. The alternative of Scenario B is simply too high a price to pay. It would mean equity markets lurching downwards and significant downgrades as well as more general upheaval in terms of social unrest and high unemployment. Once you accept that then the survival of the Euro is the best way ahead.
Bumper profits JOHN LEWIS claims the economy is stabilising after smashing through the gloom with bumper half-year profits THE PRIVATELY-OWNED partnership is taking more than £1million per hour at its department stores and Waitrose supermarket chain. And in the teeth of the biggest slump for decades half-year profits are up 60 per cent to £144.5 million, with Sales hitting £4.4 billion. John Lewis chairman Charlie Mayfield stated: “We have yet to see any kind of slowdown. It’s not getting better, but it’s not getting worse. We’re not going to see a dramatic recovery, but we’re not going back into recession either.” He believes the Chancellor would be wrong to spend more to boost the economy — and must keep a lid on debts. He said: “We need a stable economy and confidence going forward. And part of that is having sound public finances.” John Lewis and Next have been two of the stars of the high street throughout the credit crunch. Mr Mayfield put John Lewis’s success so far this year down to the fact that it continued to invest in 2011 despite the alarming slump in consumer spending. He added customer numbers were up 10 per cent and John Lewis and Waitrose had a “broader appeal.”
Be very careful, beloved Spain By Ambrose Evans-Pritchard: The Telegraph FIRST WE have the robust comments of Colonel Francisco Alaman comparing the crisis to 1936 and vowing to crush Catalan nationalists, described as ‘vultures’. “Independence for Catalonia? Over my dead body. Spain is not Yugoslavia or Belgium. Even if the lion is sleeping, don’t provoke the lion, because he will show the ferocity proven over centuries,” he said. Actually, it is not remotely like 1936. Franco’s military uprising/coup in 1936 was directed against the newly-elected Popular Front, seen by army commanders (though not all of them) as the start of a Bolshevik take-over of Spain. The Franco revolt was a defence of The Catholic hierarchy against Communism and French subversion (in their mind). Spain now has a Right-wing nationalist government with Opus Dei links, the Partido Popular. The roles are entirely reversed. Yet Col Alaman is in a sense correct. The mood is becoming dangerous. Gen Pitarch said Catalan independence is out of the question, though he also said Madrid had bungled the crisis of the regions disastrously. “Are we looking at a failed state?” he asked. Now we have an explicit threat from the Asociación de Militares Españoles (AME), an organisation of retired army officers, warning that anybody promoting the break-up of Spain (‘fractura de España’) will face treason trials in military courts. Be that as it may, what we have in Spain is a disturbing turn of events. Events in Europe are now moving fast. Portugal has been in havoc for the last week; Spain is in ever greater havoc; much of southern Europe has become unpredictable. Is it the fault of the monetary union and the Euro?
Yes, of course it is. While large parts of the world are in deep economic crisis – including Britain – the damage is concentrated with lethal intensity in the EMU victim states. Spain’s unemployment rate is already 25% and the full austerity has yet to bite. It is made much worse by the unpleasant discovery that elected governments can do nothing to escape the trap. They have lost control over their own destinies. Spain and Portugal are trapped in chronic slump with over-valued currencies. While they have clawed back some lost labour competitiveness by cutting wages, this has merely – and necessarily – compounded the debt-deflation disaster. It has pushed them closer to bankruptcy. The Draghi bond plan can certainly put off the day of reckoning. It can lower borrowing costs across the board and cushion the slump. But it cannot in itself stop the slow asphyxiation of these societies. We are moving from the financial phase of this crisis to the full-blown political phase. It really is playing out like the 1930s.

Tax in troubled times DOES ANYONE doubt that these are troubled times? Increase in IVA (VAT); changes to the rules on residencias and SIP (health) cards; having to pay for prescriptions. Unemployment is sky high and getting worse. Even the black economy is struggling… protests in Madrid… Those who in the past have put off getting their affairs in order are finding it harder to do so now, and at the same time it has never been more important to comply with the regulations than in the current crisis. We see a time in the not too distant future when having your CFR, the certificate that proves you have accounted for tax in Spain, will be as necessary as your passport when dealing with all officialdom, even at a local level. That sounds a bit grim, sometime reality is, but as with most things there is a bright side. Many British residents in Spain are paying too much tax, mostly in the UK, but in Spain too. UK Tax Refunds, as the name suggests, have been recovering overpaid tax for British residents in Spain for the last five years, with hundreds of satisfied clients to date. The service that UK Tax Refunds provides not only recovers any overpaid tax, but as part of the process ensures that
your Spanish tax obligations are met and your UK tax affairs are in order. HOW DOES THIS WORK? Once your Spanish tax affairs are put in order, we can ask HMRC in the UK to refund any overpaid tax that may be due to you. WHY BOTHER? As well as recovering your overpaid tax (average refund £3,000+) you will be Fiscally Resident in Spain, thus entitling you to be treated differently for Inheritance Tax and Capital Gains Tax, as well as Healthcare, etc. WHY UK TAX REFUNDS? We deal with the Spanish Tax Authorities as well as with the HMRC. UK Tax Refunds is a registered Agent with the Inland Revenue and fully understand the English Tax System. We can help you to work out if the tax code you were given by the English Tax Office is right or wrong and consequently modify it if necessary.
It is important to put your Spanish Tax Affairs in order but no less important than working with HMRC to put your English Tax Affairs in order according to your new situation. To do so it is not difficult but complex and UK Tax Refund can do it for you from the beginning to the end. You will not have to get involved with phone calls to HMRC or visits to the Spanish Tax Office. We will do it from A to Z and at the end of the process you will receive a phone call from a member of our staff asking you for a bank account where you would like the Tax Refund to be paid into. For a full explanation in plain English of how we can help you please phone 96 563 6938 or email: michelle.hamilton@uk-taxrefund.com Our office is open to receive your enquiry from 9.30am to 5pm from Monday to Friday.

Here we go again
Christina JUST WHEN will the Euro zone leaders admit that Greece Brady must leave the Euro - last Friday EU Finance chiefs
Regional Manager of Blacktower Costa Blanca
discovered that Greece owes 20billion€ (£15billion) double the amount the country had previously claimed. Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has asked public-sector creditors to forgive some debt while European nations led by Germany ponder on if and when to pull the plug on Athens. Spiegel Magazine today reported that inspectors for the so-called ‘troika’ - the European Commission, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund - discovered the black hole in Greek finances at the weekend. That Greece can bridge the financing gap on its own seems unlikely. The already adopted austerity program has encountered great opposition in the population. In one published study in Athens on Saturday 90 percent of survey respondents declared that the new reform packages go almost exclusively to the detriment of the poorer sections of the population. Only 33 percent also believe that the new cuts in the social network cannot solve the country’s problems.
The real question is how many more ‘Black holes’ are going to be discovered in other member States either in their Banks, Regional or Government accounts and can the Euro zone really afford to keep on bailing these countries out? As so many people living here in Spain are unsure as to what is happening and worried about their finances, Blacktower Financial Management has launched a Free Money Advice Helpline: Telephone number 965 065 265. This service is available to all, the phone lines will be manned by qualified financial advisors who will be available to answer questions and give you advice on any matter to do with finance/money be it: pensions, savings, investments, legal, tax, Banks or Insurance. Work for life
TALENTED DENTIST Dr Thomas Anton would love to give up the day job and follow his “vocation”, creating colourful sculpture out of stone. By Jack Troughton He followed in his father’s footsteps to become an artist and 16 of his pieces can be seen at a new exhibition of his work at the Klein-Schreuder Foundation sculpture garden at Alfaz del Pi. Thomas, whose has a dental practice in Benidorm, is a fine arts student in Altea has created a series of tactile – sometimes explicit but always sexy - works in alabaster, marble, and soapstone for the show he calls “Sensuality”. “My father was a sculptor, I am a dentist,” he told RTN at the exhibition’s press preview. “He had to go without money while all my brothers and sisters and I did things you could live from. “Three years ago my father died and I started to study fine arts. Now it has become more than a hobby, it is my vocation. I still work as a dentist but would like to do this as my full time job.” DISCOVER Thomas has lived in Spain for 20 years said his work was available for sale. “I have still to be discovered! I would very much like to work full time as an artist and not be a dentist.” And while he also works in wood and iron, his favourite medium remains stone and he carefully picks samples for their colours. As an example he points to an embryo shaped from a pinktinged alabaster – held against the light and it appears to have its internal blood vessels and organs in place. “Colour is very important to me,” he added. Thomas’ exhibition opens this Sunday (30th September) at 11am, when visitors can enjoy a glass of wine and music. It runs until 4th October. The Sculpture Gardens has a fascinating permanent exhibition and is open between 10am and 2pm every Sunday or during the week by appointment. Your boobs are in good hands!
ONE OF the things I miss most about living in Spain is Marks and Spencer. By Louise Clarke I know that’s sounds sad but being of a voluptuous disposition, underwear, especially bras in my size is hard to get over here. Thankfully, last month I came across Gigi’s in Quesada and now M&S can stay where it is in the UK because I have met the lovely Sue and she is now my best friend forever! My old bra had lost all its elasticity months ago but when the wire started digging into my armpit, I realised that I’d better bite the bullet and instead of booking a flight to the UK immediately, on recommendation from a friend, I visited Gigi’s, which is located on Avenida de las Naciones, the main street in Quesada, next to Oscars. SHAPE CHANGING On arriving at the store, which has a fabulous stock of lingerie, dresses and swimwear, Sue immediately pointed me in the direction of the changing rooms and without evening removing my top and showing off my ancient and wilting bra, she measured me using just her hands! I wasn’t convinced to be honest, but off she went and came back with several different bras in a size that I would never have even guessed would fit me. The first one I tried on was a Panache bra in black with a
pretty lace trim. I put it on and after a little adjusting of the straps looked at myself in the mirror. All of a sudden, my shape had changed completely and instead of my boobs facing south and close to my belly button, they now looked perky and pert! The other bras didn’t even get a look in to be honest and I immediately told Sue that I would take it! She is a genius! The old bra got tossed in the bin and I walked off feeling like a proper page three model! SLIM-LINE Gigi’s stocks a range of underwear brands including Panache, Naturana and Rosa as well as Cleo and Mascarade, under the Panache brand. They stock bras in sizes from A to K with back sizes from 30 to 46. All are UK sizes because they are all manufactured in the UK. They also stock a fantastic range of swimwear by cup size including brands such as Seaspray and Panache. They also do controlled swimwear to give you that perfect slim-line figure as well as mastectomy bras. So, who needs M&S when you have Gigi’s on your doorstep? If you are in the need for a well fitted bra that is expertly fitted by an experienced, friendly and knowledgeable bra fitter, get yourself down to Quesada now.
The shop is open from 10am until 5pm, Monday to Friday and 10am until 2pm on Saturdays. For more information visit their website www.gigispain.com or call 966 719 217.

Stopping spam emails Bob Drury asks: HELLO AUNTY, can you help me stop spam emails? I get loads mainly for sex pills and the usual sex offers - last Wednesday I got 41 spam emails from a variety of people offering the usual rubbish. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Aunty says: These days, many email providers have built in Spam filters that either stop spam emails going into your account or move them to a ‘junk email’ folder for you to determine if it is real SPAM or not. You can create a filter so that every email that contains the word ‘viagra’ is deleted. Of course this will also delete any personal emails that contain that filter word. You can try a SPAM program. A program like www.mailwasher.net which works with works with Outlook, Outlook Express, Incredimail, Thunderbird, Windows Mail, Gmail and Hotmail will help filter your emails for you. Or create another email account and be careful who and where you give that email address to! I dare say your increase in Spam emails is due to your posting on a forum, where you have made a post where your forum username is your email address. The ‘SPAMBOTS’ will be trawling the internet for email addresses, and your being posted on there is like a goldmine for them! Log in and see if you can get that user name changed, or contact the forum administrators to change your user name.
Date and time problems
Sue asks: I hope you can help me with a problem whereby when I restart my computer the date and time at bottom right of the task bar has changed to 31st December 2007. This then prevents entering other programmes and a notice on screen saying the PC is not certified. I return the date and time to actual but then it changes back again to an earlier time after shutting down, resulting in the same problem. It may be a coincidence but the problem occurred soon after an update by Java. I look forward to your advice. Aunty says: The computer’s date and time returning to a default date and time usually means the battery inside the PC is low on power. The battery
is a small thin circular one, and this provides power to the computers BIOS, which hold information such as the current date and time. If the power to this BIOS is low or interrupted, then the BIOS will reset: hence the date and time are resetting. With the date and time not correct, then some functions and programs may not work or function correctly. This will be because the PC will be looking for data that is ‘in the future!’ Resetting the date and time, as you have found, should solve these problems. However, you will have to replace the battery inside the PC. You can either do this yourself or take it to a PC shop to get the replacement battery. There is also the small chance that the date and time resetting could be the first signs that the actual motherboard of the PC is starting to go.

Computer switches off
Allen Ripley asks: HI AUNTY, can you help? Until a few months ago my computer stayed on all day with no problems. However, recently it switches off after a short period of time, and I have to sign back in again to get my screen back up. I wondered if it might be overheating, so I purchased a cooling pad, but the problem is still there. Friends have suggested it might be the settings: do you think this could be the case and if so how do I rectify the problem? My system is Windows 7. Aunty says: Many thanks for your email. It sounds like the power option settings are taking over. The power plan options allow you to determine if and when a PC should switch off the monitor, or if it should place the PC into ‘hibernation mode’, and if you want it to ask for a password when waking up. To access power plan options, type power settings into the search bar in the Start Menu and hit Enter. Or, right click on your desktop, and go to Personalize, Screensaver, and then Change Power Options. The Power Options screen opens and from here you can select from some predefined power option plans Click on ‘Choose what the power button does’ and you can tweak several options such as requiring a password on wakeup and what the power button on the computer does. If you set ‘When I press the power button do nothing’, you won’t have a problem with the PC shutting down when you accidently hit the power button. To change any one of the predefined power plans click on ‘Change plan settings’: then you can change the amount of inactive time before the monitor is turned off or the computer goes into Sleep mode, using the options in the drop down box. RESPONSE: Thanks for your help. I followed your instructions and my computer is now working fine. Many thanks, Allen.
Gadget Inspector Investigates:
Swissvoice Epure Telephone/Answer Machine THIS WEEK the Inspector is to be found on the blower chasing down leads using the Swissvoice Epure Full Eco Cordless Single DECT Telephone with Digital Answer Machine.
Okay, I know, it’s just a boring old telephone/answer machine right? Wrong! The Swissvoice Epure is bang up-to-date Swiss engineered technology designed to make your current handset seem like a Model T Ford in comparison. The Swissvoice Epure deliberately encompasses a blend of classic and futuristic elements in its design. This combines with modern technology combined in the convenience of a classic wireless handset. But what about the eco credentials? The Swissvoice Epure contains technology designed to reduce the electromagnetic waves absorbed by the human body, and also consume less power as a result. The manufacturer states: “There is evidence that emissions absorbed by the brain reduce by 400 per cent when the distance between the body and the mobile phone increases. By using a handset equipped with fulleco technology, we’ve been able to drastically lower the body’s exposure to electromagnetic emissions without sacrificing mobile functionality.” So that’s all good then. The Swissvoice Epure is not lacking in features either. It has a clock and alarm, appointments and reminders, 10 Hi-Fi ring tones, and a keypad lock. It can also accept calls automatically when you lift the receiver, and has the option of handsfree operation if you don´t. For call management, the phone can store up 100 names, display caller number, name, and call
duration, and save the last 10 phone numbers used. The Swissvoice Epure supports DTMF or pulse dialling, although these days most exchanges use pulse dialling. The built in digital answer machine has a 30 minute capacity and can be operated from the base or the handset. Messages can also be accessed remotely via your PIN code when you’re away from home. The Swissvoice Epure also comes with prerecorded outgoing messages and the option to record your own message. The handset has an indoor range from the base station of 50m and up to 300m outdoors. Combined with its long talk time of up to 10 hours and 150 hours standby, you can talk for as long as you like – and with its high sound quality you won’t be struggling to make out what’s being said either. The Inspectors Verdict: The Swissvoice Epure Full Eco Cordless Single DECT Telephone with Digital Answer Machine certainly brings the old dog and bone out of the Dark Ages. And with its eco credentials perhaps it´ll make a contribution to saving the planet too! Visit www.gadget-hound.co.uk/swissvoice-epure/ to purchase the Swissvoice Epure Full Eco Cordless Single DECT Telephone with Digital Answer Machine for 125€. Prices quoted include free delivery to Spain (Euro cost subject to exchange rate at time of purchase).

Life horoscopes A break in routine this week is just what is needed as it takes you away from the same old same old and shows you new horizons and possibilities. This is a great time to make future plans especially if they are to showcase your talents and strengths. You never know what you can do until you try - so give it a whirl!
With Venus entering into Libran space all is well and it could be the right time to let bygones be bygones and move on as best you can under the circumstances. The focus is on loving yourself enough to ring the changes and accept that though some things will be au uphill struggle, you are empowered and the time is right. Hosting the Jupiter retrograde, stand by for further instruction, and make no immediate decisions, especially those that involve your signature, or parting with cash. The rules apply during the immediate retrograde blast off, and last well until mid week, when it will be safe, once more, to go back in the water again. Hold back on emotional issues since they are beginning to impact on you, and everyone gives you differing advice on what you should or shouldn’t do. You have to make your own decisions based on your gut feelings and your own powerful and highly psychic ability to know what’s best for you all around. The presence of Virgoan energy this week takes the pressure off at a time when you should be adopting a ‘wait and see’ policy. It is so important that you do not have all your eggs in one basket, but there again if there was ever a time to prove yourself it is now whilst you have nothing whatsoever to lose. A time to seriously examine finances as a corner develops and brings you moves to taking closer control of your expenditure. There have been some unexpected expenses, just lately, but when all is said and done your money should be working for you, and not the other way around. Take control! There is a need to put your cards on the table and to tell a few home truths this week as something has to be done to turn the current situation around to your benefit. This certainly isn’t selfish but it is self preserving, and you have the support of all those who matter to you and wish you all the very best. The famous sting may be hovering around but you would be very foolish to allow others to see just how angry you really are inside. There is more than one way to skin a rabbit, and there is a method in your current madness known only to you. All will be well, and on your terms too if you play to win. The long term absence of retrograding Jupiter means that you are left to your own devices for some time. Your resourceful and calm energies won’t suffer and you often do your very best of things alone anyway. Guidance will come for a project steered by you as it brings unexpected and unprecedented success. Take a break as the end of a long journey is finally in sight and all is well that ends well. It has been an uphill struggle just lately, but you have truly pulled out all the stops, and turned everything around with your persistent belief against all the odds. Taking time to chill will be an excuse for further future plans. Cosmic energies are issuing you with a warning you should adhere to. Take things a little easier, and walk away from a situation that has developed on the workfront because nobody can help those who cannot help themselves, or listen to reason. Life is too short to have to work this way, if there is an option. You have taken too long to make a decision that benefits all concerned. Sometimes you have to think of yourself and your happiness, and what it really means to take the reins of a situation that begs to take you out of control. Be yourself because that’s how people love you, and it is who you are, after all.

Earth calling
COMMUNICATION WITH Spirit isn’t what it used to be: that’s because it is better. The clear lines of connection between Earth and Spirit have never been so open and they are open in both directions. This makes my job a little easier but above all it allows for a better understanding of the wonderful process that joins the direct and indirect energy to form the Spiritual exchange that proves survival on an Earthbound level, and comforts greatly those in the Spirit World who wish to be updated on what they have left behind. The whole process works with a staggering telepathy and synchronicity as wonderful energies are re-united and security and comfort forms a safety net for the entire procedure. Many people whose loved ones have moved on do not realise just how close to the Earth plane these soul survivors are and how affected they can be by a family crisis, or unrequired mourning or a broken heart. Some who have passed over indeed do not take their rightful place and this can often be because they are so concerned about Earthly happenings amongst those left behind, unfinished family business that hasn’t quite gone the way that they had hoped for, or things not being done the way that they should be. Though stripped of an Earthly body the etheric code of the soul allows each individual the right to use their power the way that they need to. Many lessons are learned by souls at rest in the warm energy and comfort of the Spirit World but when they look down at what they left behind it is often distressing for them to see the error of their ways; what should have been; could have been; would have been…but wasn’t. Regrets are counterclaims for not doing things we should have, and it is hard when faced with this World to know

exactly what was right to do. The clear lines of Spirit are opening up because people are abolishing the fear and terror that communicating with the dead brought up in the past. They are realising that there is joy in actual contact, and that love can make all kinds of things happen if you have a freely open mind, belief and good intention. One very wonderful thing is that the young are being called to Spirit. I have never had so many reports of children, teenagers and young adults becoming a part of the process of connection between the living and the dead, which exists on better terms because of their undeniable faith and a strong refusal that there is anything weird, silly, crazy or wrong about a Spiritual life. This means that the barriers are falling. People are talking about bereavements and sharing grief. It means that there will be more programmes on TV about the paranormal, and investigations covering all aspects of how Spirit communicates with us. I took a Psychology degree way back when, but on a recent trip to Cambridge I actually discovered a college with a four year degree course in Parapsychology. It wasn’t possible in my days as a student, and a part of me hankered after returning to study once more. As I entered a cloister to take in the scene, students greeted me with a highly respectful formal gesture, assuming I was a visiting lecturer. Suddenly I was back to basics again - dream shattered somewhat. In this changing Spiritual World I may be a professional, but I am still a student of what I am still to learn and open to all that facilitates this!

If it’s your birthday this week
Email your letters to me at: kennycorris@roundtownnews.com KENNY, I recently read a magazine article in which you talked about Walpurgis Night. My family always celebrated this night in Scotland when I was a little girl, and I have never really known why. Until reading your article I thought nobody knew about it. Tina Mc.M Tina, I was born on Walpurgis Night: it is the strongest night of the Witches. Halloween is the night the Witches’ travel, but 30th April is the night of giving power and gifts, celebrated especially in Sweden and amid the Nordic countries: maybe you have Scandinavian ancestry as I do? Or maybe you had a family who were sensitive to the arts of Wicca or actual Witchery? Your native Scotland is near to all the action anyway. It is said that church bells ring thirteen times at the Witching hour just after midnight. I was born just in time at 23.59! Celebrate by burning a wreath and some mulled wine to keep out the early Spring chill! Can you remember your celebrations of the past?
Take the bull by the horns and just do what feels good right now. This year true independence is very much the way forward; and you owe it to yourself to make a go of things, your way, anyway!

Life spanish
Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin
Step by Step Spanish I HOPE I’m not making you dizzy with all these changes of title. Some of you may remember (and some of you I believe have cut out and kept!) a series of articles called “Essential Spanish”. There were actually 160 of them altogether, the first 80 of which have been re-edited, entitled “Step by Step Spanish” volumes 1and 2 and are available as e-books on my website. As well as re-editing the remaining 80 articles, I am also adding 40 new ones to complete the series. So, for you privileged RTN readers, here is the first of those 40 new articles which I trust you will enjoy. The title of this one is: “Ways of talking about the future”. Those people who learn Spanish in a grammatical, mechanical kind of way, tend to learn the “future simple tense” (more of which later) and then think they have talking about the future all sewn up and sorted out. If only it were that easy! Of course the “future simple tense” is a useful tool to have in our linguistic toolbox, but it is not always the most accurate one. To put it another way, it would be like someone speaking English like this: “Tomorrow I will go to Murcia and I will have some lunch. Then I will go for a walk. In the evening I will watch Coronation Street”. It gets the message across, but it does sound rather wooden! So, there are various ways of talking about the future, and this is what we are going to explore for the next few articles. Way back at the beginning of this whole series I introduced a construction which is probably the most useful one to use to discuss our future plans. I call this the “future of intention” and it simply consists of the verb “ir” in the present tense, followed by “a” followed by the infinitive of another verb. So, in the first person this is “voy a” (translated
Life books
as I’m going to”) “Voy a comer” (I’m going to eat, or I’m going to have lunch”) “Voy a estudiar español” (I’m going to study Spanish). These are our plans and intentions. If we change “voy” to the second person “vas” we can ask about other people’s plans and intentions. “¿Qué vas a hacer?” (What are you going to do?) This is a tricky one to pick up when spoken as it will sound like this: “Kevasathair”. Actually, it’s even worse if it’s said to you in the (usted) polite form ¿Qué va a hacer?” This sounds like “Kevathair”. When it’s said with an Andalucian or South American accent (amongst others) when the “th” sound becomes a “s” sound. As South Americans more often use the “usted” form, that gives us “Kevasair”. However, the way I have represented the sound of the final “er” as “air” is not really accurate, it’s just the nearest English written equivalent. It’s a shorter Spanish “e” sound with the light “r” at the end. Perhaps “Kevasé” is a closer representation of the real sound. Sorry, I didn’t set out to frighten you with this article, but it looks as though that’s what I might be doing. Almost everybody I speak to about learning Spanish tells me that understanding what they hear is by far the most difficult thing, and it’s really because of these kinds of problems. You might read “¿Qué va a hacer?”, understand it in its written form and even say it to considerable success, but are you prepared to answer something that sounds more or less like “Kevasé”. Well anyway, I’ll leave you to think about that one, and get back to “talking about the future” next week!

Sex, Bombs and Burgers DESPITE THE Jackie Collins aura of the snappy title, this is a serious study into the parts pornography, war, and food has played in the development of 21st Century technology. Without doubt these three obsessions are the most pervasive in our culture and seem to represent the worst qualities of the human race - but technological journalist Peter Nowak is more interested in just what our rage, greed, and lust have driven us to achieve. Without doubt the most technological advances of the last sixty years have stemmed from the trio of million dollar industries that cater to our most basic impulses – predominantly, as Mr Nowak drily observes, because no other industries have the budget or the balls to be so innovative. From cling film to aerosols, digital cameras to freeze drying, and GM foods to Google many of the gadgets with us today have their roots in the needs of porn, the military, and the fast food giants. The result is a an original book and an interesting read that confirmed my convictions that the food industry has been poisoning us for decades, that Churchill knew about Hitler’s plans to flatten Coventry before it happened, and that Big Brother (no, not the TV drivel but Orwell’s conception of all-seeing authority) is truly watching us everywhere we go.

At the roundabout for Rojales turn left, cycle up and over the bridge to the next roundabout and go straight across to follow the road to San Fulgencio where you turn left at the roundabout following the signs for Elche. Follow this road past La Marina Urbanisation and stay on this road which is a relatively good straight road. Pass the petrol station on your left and you will come to a roundabout where the road becomes a dual carriageway with a cycle track on the left: cycle on this track until you come to the next roundabout, turn left here onto the CV851 and follow this road for approximately 1km before turning left. Once on this road follow it for approximately 12kms passing El Hondo nature reserve: just stay on this road and you will come straight into San Felipe Neri. There is a beautiful church in the town square which looks like something out of a John Wayne movie. On your left you will see The ‘Bonnie Mackintosh’ Tavern / Restaurant, owned and run by Debbie and John Mackintosh. This is an excellent restaurant for a refreshment / snack or meal. They have a fantastic menu which caters for everyone’s needs. Lynn and I had an excellent meal one Friday evening and can highly recommend it. Debbie and
San Felipe Neri
John have offered all cyclists stopping for a snack a free water bottle refill (water only) which is very good of them. For the route back we cycled on into and through Catral heading for Dolores, following the road back to Formentera, Benijofar and finally Quesada. This is a beautiful flat cycle route with lots of gorgeous scenery and superb views of the mountains and hills. Total Cycling time: 3 Hours Total Distance: Approx 60kms Summary: Beautiful Scenic route over flat terrain with lovely views and great roads.
CYCLE TRIP Gary and Lynn will be leading a trip out to the Bonnie Mackintosh for coffee and sandwiches on Saturday 6th October at 2pm if anyone would like to join them. Booking is essential. All riders must be of an average cycling level and able to cycle at a steady pace. All routes are now available via www.cyclogicalcostablanca.com or from Cyclogical’s newly published book ‘Cycling Routes, Maps, Tips and Advice’. Gary and Lynn are available at Cyclogical in Quesada, Monday to Friday from 9.30am till 5.30pm and from 10am till 2pm on a Saturday to assist and advise you on all your cycling requirements.

I’m having problems with my Pastrami I’VE FINALLY got the brine sorted out and invented a secret dry rub which is used to form a crust on the outside when the meat is slowly roasted after smoking, so what else can be causing me so many problems? Well it’s the piece of meat itself which in the UK we call brisket or here in Spain it’s supposedly called Pecho. As usual I negotiated the price before stating exactly what I wanted and what I wanted it for and even saw a whole preordered piece for someone else weighing 6-7 kilos vacuum packed although I would have preferred it unwrapped. I was told by the butcher that he needed some notice so that he could order it in especially and make sure it was correct and good quality with just a little grassa or fat. So, when I thought the time was right I gave notice and waited expectantly for the meat to arrive a few days later. It looked the right size when it arrived all wrapped up and to be honest I should have checked it there and then but I thought that the hardest part had already been done and I was too eager to get started on what was to be a long and labour intensive process. I should have twigged when he said that he had taken out all of the bones and although Brisket can include some bone ends it shouldn’t have had that many. What I unwrapped at home was beef ribs or Costillas, minus the bones, quite fatty with a layer of fat running through the centre together with some sinew and more bones. Don’t get me wrong it was a beautiful piece of meat
and at a very good price but sadly not suitable for my Pastrami trials. We have been eating beef stews and mince for weeks. I am not as yet prepared to share with you our own special recipe we have come up with, the brine recipe for most Pastramis and for Corned beef are essentially the same (look one up) although the cuts of meat can vary between Skirt (Falda) and Brisket, the brining time is also the same amount of time being 5-7days. Pastrami in our house is then Oak Smoked before slow roasting in an oven covered with our new spice blend whereas Corned beef is boiled until tender then cooled rapidly folding in some of the fat using Trudy’s ice-cream maker (it’s worth noting that tinned Corned Beef is rotated in the tins whist it cools enabling the equal distribution of the fat which would otherwise just float to the top). For the best Corned Beef Hash dice shallots, potatoes and more of our tomatoes into the same size small cubes and fry separately in a little oil and butter until cooked and even a little crisp, as you like it. Shred the corned beef and reheat in a little of its own cooking liquor until hot before folding all of the ingredients together making sure that the crispy fried potatoes go on last to keep them crispy and top with
our own invention of a hot, Perfectly Poached and Oak Smoked Runny Free Range Egg. As for the Pastrami recipe things are going well and the results are positive having found the right piece of meat at last and the taste is particularly good but as to what we do with it apart from tasting it we will have to wait and see. Perhaps I will have to wait until I make some homemade rye bread before attempting the perfect Pastrami on rye sandwiches with mustard and unfortunately some more home-grown sliced tomato.

Why can’t I get boots to fit me?
I DO not think I have abnormally large calves and I do not feel out of proportion, so why when I try on knee length boots do I feel like an elephant? I have tried for years to buy knee length boots - I have persevered through countless sales assistants who eventually tire of not finding anything that I can zip up before they drift off to serve ‘normal’ customers. I have endured the humiliation of being surrounded by boots that leave a 3 inch gap at the top of my calf, and the pitying looks from other ladies who successfully purchased the latest knee length boots: what is wrong with me? I am a standard size 14/16, of normal height and take a regular size 5/38 shoe, so why do footwear manufacturers continue to exclude me as a potential customer? Well, I have now shopped selfishly, with me in mind! In our new Shoe & Bag Department I included a selection of knee length boots with a stretch fabric panel - even I can get them on with ease. They still need to be gorgeous, as I am not prepared to compromise on style for boots that fit and I think I have got this right with a collection of lovely patent leather and fabric knee lengths boots that come in black and brown and start at 65€ and also a range of navy patent leather knee length boots.
Ankle boots are big this season - we have some great fur-trimmed ones. I have made observations over the years and conclude that there are three types of women: Those who do not see shoes as integral to an outfit no matter how formal the occasion Those who try to accessorize but are not that committed as long as shoes are comfy Those for whom shoes and boots are a way of life and know shoes should NEVER be described as comfy… ever: ‘five yarders’ or ‘car to bar’ shoes are only ever truly appreciated by ladies in category three.
boots should not be too big on the ankle, giving the impression of sparrow legs. I am also a ‘leggings convert’ - I bought leggings from Joseph Ribkoff, they are really lovely and make me feel confident enough to wear not only leggings, but tunic length tops (a first for me) with knee length boots.
We have just unpacked a Rebeca Sanver collection, a top Spanish Alicante-based shoe designer. The ankle boots are beautifully crafted and with a matching bag. There are a few basic rules to follow no matter which category you fall into. If you are wearing a knee length boot with a tunic top remember to always have the knee showing to avoid looking short – no matter how tall you are. If you are wearing calf length boots create volume by excess fabric that ruches - the volume balances the look. Ankle

Life showbiz goss Arnie totally recalls what?
Arnie, a loveable fellow from Austria who became the strongest most muscular man in the world in the late 80s, and I have brought Arnold Schwarzenegger here today to tell you about his latest memoir ‘Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story’. A trailer has been made to promote the book and features a camera following Arnie around during his daily routine and him talking about his career with clips from his various movies interspersed between his words of wisdom to keep you interested. Talking on US radio last week Arnie said: “If my life was a movie, no one would believe it … I came to Hollywood, and within a decade I was one of the biggest action stars of all time.” But we have to deal with the acting side of things Arnie - ‘cause there wasn’t any, mate! Now in full flight el hunko added: “Then I took the greatest gamble of my life - I went into politics. I became Governor of California and went from being The Terminator to being The Governator.” Riveting stuff Arnie, riveting... Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Story is due out on 1st October and is likely to do very well as it promises to include details of Arnie´s alleged affair with his longtime maid and the fathering of her child. Now that’s worth a Total Recall.

Towie needs towing away
What is it that diffuses the brain and gets people believing they are part of something worthy when the truth is it’s absolutely goddamn awful? Gemma Collins of TOWIE fame has been gassing away to The Sun about how the TV show is going to be made into a movie saying: “Yeah, it’s gonna happen, if Sex And The City can do it, so can we. It’ll be fab, everyone will love it.” No no, Gemma, not everyone, your mum and dad maybe, but far from everyone, hun... Her gob then went into overdrive when she added: “We don’t know where it will be filmed, we don’t know when, but I mean we?re just
normal people with crazy lives.” Ooh ooh ooh … interesting using the words ‘normal’ and ‘crazy’ in the one sentence. Gemma really started to motor on when she then blurted out: “Some people only go out on birthdays and Xmases: we’re out every night of the week.” Yes you are sweet pea, and numbing our hearts and minds with your mindless gibberish while you’re at it… I now hand this item over your good selves and ask you to cast your vote on whether TOWIE should be made into a movie or all those fake tans and two foot long eyelashes should be handed over to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Brad fancies an Indian Brad Pitt has been in the news a lot lately with him suggesting the mega bucks paydays are over with the film industry in such disarray and also the story a few weeks back about how his mother is causing havoc at his family home in that very special mother-in-law way. But it’s another item that’s caught my eye, as of all things he should come up with to grab the headlines he has said he would be open to signing on for a Bollywood project. He told Indian news agency IANS: “Indian cinema seems to be growing very well and I would love to work in a Bollywood film as there is so much drama and colour in the films there.” Sure is Brad, and an awful lot of jumping about and singing and dancing as well. On the subject of the most popular actress in India Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Pitt said, “I regret missing out on the chance to work with her after she turned down a role in the 2007 epic Troy,” something she perhaps did on the back of the curry in the canteen being made by Vesta…

Peugeot 207CC
DRIVING THE Peugeot 207CC with the metal roof down has re-introduced me to aromas of the past. I wasn’t expecting it but memories of my late grandma came flooding back as I drove through the New Forest in Hampshire. Although I love plants and flowers I couldn’t tell you what scents tickled my nostrils but I hadn’t smelt them for almost 30 years when my gran used to do her flower arranging. There are so many unusual fragrances early in the morning when the world is waking up and you only really notice them when walking or the next best thing, driving with the top down. I suffer from hayfever and was concerned that driving with the roof down would cause a sneezing fit but fortunately pollen doesn’t hang around long enough when the 207 cuts through it. While this two-door has four seats, the rear is only really suitable for small children – my daughter’s baby seat only fits when my wife’s seat is far forward, making it uncomfortable for her. This Peugeot is ideal for the young and care free and should really do away with the rear seats altogether. Driving the little French number is an invigorating experience. The 1.6-litre petrol is punchy and the six-speed box is clunky and decisive. Its cruise control is simple to operate and there is also the option of limiting the speed travelled so that no matter how hard the accelerator is pushed it will not exceed the speed set. A good quality leather interior and tough black plastic dashboard easily copes with anything the elements might throw at it. The test takes place immediately after I return a Lexus IS250CC costing almost 58,000€. It is interesting to note that you could in fact purchase two 207CCs and have nearly 7,500€ remaining for the price of the Lexus. You might think that the Lexus would have tainted my view and that it would win the contest hands down. Sure the Lexus is uber-luxurious and has room for four adults. But it had a dinky boot where my briefcase and laptop just about fitted, albeit rather awkwardly. The 207’s boot is larger and better designed as you can see by watching the video at testdrives.biz. As long as the cover is pulled over the luggage the user-friendly roof will
retract. It goes down in 25 seconds compared to 21 seconds on the Lexus. But it’s the driving where the little Pug wins because of its smaller size and handling. It’ll also return around 38mpg, which for a 156bhp petrol engine is pretty reasonable. Parkers, the car experts, say: “The 207 CC is a stylish and well equipped small convertible that won’t leave you cold in the winter. It uses a fully automatic metal folding roof with no levers or catches to release, so at the push of a button it’s a convertible 25 seconds later. Its predecessor, the 206 CC, was plagued with roof problems on early models and lacked refinement. Luckily, these shortcomings have been addressed and this Peugeot feels well made. It’s also good to drive, fun and has decent luggage space.” Economy: 38mpg 6 speed manual 0-60mph: 8.3secs Top speed: 130mph Fuel capacity: 50 litres

Better the devil you know?
Believe it or not, with just a handful of games played, rumours are rife that the managerial sack-race has begun with a number of Premier League managers being touted as the season’s first casualty. Given that football is the dictionary definition of a results-driven business, I can understand why, if results aren’t coming, the manager’s position is questioned but surely it’s too early for him to be relieved of his duties? I’m a firm believer that longevity is the key to success. But at the same time, I also believe that, if you are going to sack a manager, that’s only half the job; you have to replace him with someone better, but there are very few examples of that being the case in recent times. Back in January, Neil Warnock was replaced as QPR manager by Mark Hughes and although the Welshman spent a ridiculous amount of money in a short period of time, the London club only just avoided relegation last year and find themselves in a similar position so far this term. Given the funds and players now at Sparky’s disposal, I’d say only a mid-table finish would quantify him as an improvement… but that looks unlikely. In summer, Alex
McLeish (who was never popular with the fans) was shown the door by Aston Villa and replaced by “young and hungry” Paul Lambert. Now it has to be said that Villa are not a particularly good team but McLeish managed to avoid relegation last year even though his best players were sold before he arrived and then lost three more of his better players to injury and illness for lengthy periods. Lambert, so far, hasn’t had such things to contend with but you wouldn’t know it looking at The Villains current league position. Andre Villas-Boas, following a disastrous spell at Chelsea, replaced Harry Redknapp at Tottenham over the summer and although it’s been a steady start from the Londoners, they certainly don’t look as threatening in terms of the title and Champions League qualification as they did under ‘Arry. Also in summer, Brendan Rodgers (the bookies’ current favourite to “win” the sack-race) replaced Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish at the Anfield helm. Now Rodgers made a fantastic name for himself last year with Swansea, playing a brand of football that Liverpool have lacked in recent years, but while last season’s league position was sub-standard, Dalglish did guide the club to two cup finals, picking up the Carling Cup in the process. It’s early days of course, but Rodgers and Liverpool haven’t started well at all and the possession-game that put Rodgers on the map is taking longer than planned to implement. I’m not saying that he/they won’t come good, and I’m certainly
not saying he should lose his job, but there’s definitely a case to answer in terms of whether Dalglish would be doing any worse. As I’ve said, my philosophy is to give managers time but hair-trigger chairmen seem to look at the examples of Alan Pardew at Newcastle and especially Chelsea’s Roberto Di Matteo. These two guys are examples of what can be achieved by nipping a problem in the bud and acting bravely. Chris Hughton was doing a fine job in the North-East but the powersthat-be thought otherwise and he was replaced; Newcastle’s record since shows that the decision (although it appeared ludicrous at the time) was inspired. Similarly, AVB was relieved of his duties after just 6 months at Chelsea, which seemed harsh, but his replacement went on to guide the club to FA Cup and European Cup glory. So for any manager that’s currently struggling and maybe fearing for his job, I’d like to see them shown a little faith…….but I doubt Pardew and Di Matteo are high on their Christmas card lists!

The Final Whistle
Mad Michel
I HAVEN’T had a pop at UEFA President Michel Platini for a couple of months, so let’s put that right shall we? Having voted for Qatar to hold the World Cup in 2022, Platini is now trying to move the goal posts by suggesting that the tournament be held during the European winter, no mention of which was made when the bids were made and Qatar came out on top of the voting. Platini is proposing a mid season break between 2nd November – 20th December with the domestic season going on until June the following year. But the impact of that would be huge on the Premier League plus the UK summer sports that normally get a look in when football is off the radar. Platini said “We have to go to Qatar when it is good for everybody to participate. What is better for the fans?” What a shame he didn’t think of that when he cast his vote in the first place.
replacements. By the way, for the word ‘replacement’ you can substitute ‘rubbish’ as the first three weeks have been a disaster. Penalty decisions are taking almost 5 minutes per game longer than last season while the statistics would suggest that home teams are being unduly favoured by the men in white and black. And it gets worse. If you get the chance, go on to You Tube and watch the final play of the game between Seattle and Green Bay. It’s being described as ‘the worst call in history’ and while the NFL has backed the officials that made it, it’s merely a case of the governing body trying, and failing, to save face. The lock out is saving the NFL around $12 million. That’s a fair amount but it’s a drop in the ocean compared to their annual operating budget of $1 billion. They may be financially richer but their sport is all the poorer for it.
Gridlock Grid Iron Premier League and European referees sometimes get a bad press in this column but the current situation in the National Football League in the USA makes our lot look like a bunch of world beaters. The NFL is locked in a pay dispute with their top officials and has allowed the season to start by using

THIS WEEK’S competition was an open match and the only one of this season, the venue being the Eden canal. Well, at present that is a misnomer as the river has continual flow with the water flowing straight into the sea…? Again, the fishing was patchy with the noted pegs providing the best weights. As always you needed your cutters as the bamboos are growing at an alarming rate. 1st Bill (The Master) Reade fishing the pole using paste with 14.48 kilos 2nd Ian (The Irish Wizard) Dalzell fishing the pole using pellet with 12.76 kilo´s. (The majority of the fish coming in the last hour) 3rd Marlene (The Sweetie Lady) Hutchinson fishing the feeder using pellet with 12.36 kilos NOTE Club subs have to be paid prior to the AGM on 30th September - failure to do so will mean the joining fee will have to be paid again. FC Torry news TORRY ENTERTAINED Jove Espanol last Sunday in front of a crowd of 450. Both teams came into the game on equal points with two wins and two defeats. The game was a scrappy affair with Torry struggling to find any rhythm or form, particularly in the first half. The opposition took the lead after capitalising on a misplaced pass by Jorge. Jorge atoned for his error with an equaliser from the penalty spot. After the break, Jove took the lead again through a magnificent strike from 25 yards into the top corner of the net. Torry equalised towards the end when Jose Manuel forced the ball over the line after their keeper had parried a snap-shot from Luis Carlos. A draw was a fair result. On Sunday 8th placed Torry travel to Denia and should be looking to give a much improved performance and return to winning ways. The Torry Army is taking a coach for the day. If you are a Torry fan, book a place.

There was very little wind on the water and the fish not in a feeding mood on most of the pegs. With the exception of peg 5 on the brook mouth, which was fished by Doug Hornblow - former Welsh International Angler - things were always going to be tough for the rest of us. 1st Doug (The Welsh Goldminer) Hornblow with16.680kg fishing pole using pellet 2nd Dave (Yours Truly) Hoare with 5.000kg fishing the feeder using corn and the whip with maggots for Bleak 3rd Terry (Swing Em) Screen with 4.800kg fishing the whip, using maggot for Bleak with 166 fish caught this
appearance of Afghanistan. They’ve got a couple of tidy fast bowlers and in Gulbodin Naib, they have a batsman of no little class. In the match against England, he smashed a Graeme Swann over for 16 and then proceeded to hit Jade Dernbach for two sixes. And all this after learning his craft, like many of his team mates, with very basic equipment at a refugee camp in northern Pakistan. Let’s hope that the ICC recognises the talent that lies within this extraordinary side and gives them more than the occasional dabble with the short form of the game.

Alfaz Darts League THE NEW Alfaz Darts League season began on 14th of September. Despite the name, teams from both Alfaz, Albir and Benidorm are all competing this year on a Friday night. The league has been run in various guises over the past five years and when this season finishes in December we will be looking to again expand to two divisions. So if you fancy a bit of friendly competition and banter over a cheeky beer on a Friday, or like me the years in Spain have ravaged your body to the point where darts is simply the only sport left you can manage, then contact Ryan on 682 667 102 to register your team for the next season which starts in the new year. We will be posting weekly updates on the progress of the league which you can also view at www.alfazdartsleague.co.uk

The glass-half-empty guy Noel’s world of golf By Noel Eastwell Teaching Professional Campo de Golf El Plantio 639 730 891
MANY YEARS ago I vowed that I would never again play golf with any golf society after I got to the end of my tether with the perennial whiner. You know the sort - nothing is ever right in his opinion. Last week I was invited to play golf with one of our local golf societies in the north of our region and against my better judgment with the benefit of hindsight I accepted the invitation. After so many years without playing with a society as the day approached I begun to look more and more forward to my day out with some people who I really did not know many of and to making new friends. Just like any other person who accepts an invitation to play with a golf society they have never played with before. I was paired with three members who were of long standing and have played golf here for many years. After two holes my dream of enjoying myself disappeared after I found myself paired with the ‘glass-half-empty’ member. Not only did this guy spoil my day he also spoiled the day out for many of the members as he continually went from one to the
other throughout the day, even on the golf course, moaning about everything and anything. The greens were too slow; the tee boxes needed cutting; the fairways were too wet; the buggies were too slow; the group ahead was too slow… on and on he went for what seemed like an eternity. After a few holes I made sure I was never near enough to hear him carrying on but the body language of those within earshot confirmed my suspicions. I really don’t know why these people come out to play golf and I don’t know how a good society gets rid of them - I wish I did. These people, and practically every golf society has one, ruin the day out for many golfers who spend hard-earned money to go out for a day’s enjoyment and sport with friends. Maybe the answer is to have a scenario where this type of person is ‘sent to Coventry’ and nobody talks to him or maybe they have to be told straight that nobody wants their day out ruined by them and told to stay away. I would be interesting to know just how we deal with these people; let me know by writing to
golf@roundtownnews.com and I’ll let you know the best suggestions.

The RTN Club Scene RTN GOLF Club will stage its very first club championship at El Plantio on December 11th during the Grand Final league meeting. This will be the day when a very proud person will become Club Champion of the very best golf club in Spain. Every golfer who has a RFEG licence and is a member of RTN Golf Club will be eligible to play for our club championship even if they have not yet played in any of our League meetings throughout 2012. After getting great support from Font Del Llop last month we had planned to take RTN Golf Club back to the course on 9th October but with negotiations over price failing after we were quoted 58.50€ per player including buggy we will not now be supporting Font Del Llop in the foreseeable future; a great pity as it is no doubt a great golf course to play. Our next league meeting will now be at Alicante Golf on 9th October starting at 10am where our members will be able to play this Seve Ballesteros designed course for 48€ including buggy and breakfast. The RTN Golf League sponsored by Lloyds Bank International is now getting too close to call when trying to select a winner of either division. With the best six scores to count over the season more and more of our players are now getting to be able to drop one of their previous lower scores in favour of a better one and this means that both The Premier Division title and The Sterling Division titles will certainly not be decided until the very last shot of a really exciting season that began back in January. Next season with the leagues changing slightly to allow in non-federated members of RTN Golf Club who will have their own league the excitement will in all likelihood be even higher. Join RTN Golf Club now and join us for the very best way to enjoy competitive golf in the most friendly of environments. GOLFING TIP OF THE WEEK Practice with the knowledge that what you are doing is correct otherwise you may be engraining faults that will become almost impossible to get rid of. NOEL EASTWELL GOLF ACADEMY AT EL PLANTIO Quality coaching at reduced rates for RTN Golf Club members: contact Noel on 639 730 891.

Race Report WHAT A weekend! The Singapore Grand Prix saw Hamilton with mechanical failure and Alonso extending his championship lead followed in the evening by slightly lower paid racing stars at the oval circuit in Cartagena to see them fighting it out at the first oval track in Spain. The nine-race card was alternated between standard racing and ‘lightning rods’ - cars that are race-tuned to go faster. This series is hotly contested. The much-awaited Drivers League Table is being prepared and should be here next week so you can track the performance of your favourite competitors. Dave Belcher in Herman (car 8) dominates the rookie series in Velocity Racing. So Martin decided it was time to teach him a lesson and let him race in the lightening series. The first Belchi challenge was won outright by Herman. So Martin decided to ‘bix things up a mit’ starting Herman ¾ lap behind: he didn’t win, but one more lap and he would have done. The evening included close racing with a couple of spills but no serious injuries. A great night’s racing and entertainment: for the latest videos of the races search
