Air disaster ‘deliberate’

by Jack Troughton THE CO-PILOT of doomed Germanwings flight 4U 9525 deliberately flew the aircraft into the ground killing all 150 people on board, it was revealed yesterday (Thursday). Andreas Lubitz, 28, took control of the jet after the captain left the cockpit to use the toilet – locking the door and refusing to let his senior colleague back in. And the Airbus A320 hit the ground some 10 minutes later – a horrifying story revealed by the ‘black box’ cockpit voice recorder and confirmed by Marseilles prosecutor Bryce Robin at a French press conference.

SEMANA SANTA, the Easter processions, start on Sunday with the first major procession on Monday evening, starting at 9pm. One of the major attractions of the event is the men in Green, the International Cofradia, known as Los Costaleros. This years two ‘carries’ take place on Monday 30th March at 9pm and Good Friday, 3rd April, starting at 8pm. The main event is held on Good Friday, the longest procession which involves the participation of more than 2,500 people, including Los Costaleros. It starts early, around 7pm, well before the sun sets and has been known to finish close to mid-night! All the processions start and finish in front of the Inmaculada Church, beside the Town Hall in Torrevieja, with different days featuring different themes and cofradias. The weather forecast for Easter Week is excellent, even to the point that some of the participants may be complaining of the heat, by the time their circuit of the town centre is completed.

ON MAY 24th, the majority of Spain’s autonomous regions will do battle at the voting box to elect their democratic choices for municipal and region governments. The National election is expected to take place in November. Officially the election campaigns will kick off at midnight on May 9th, coincidentally European Day, with the traditional pasting of election posters in each of the municipalities Town Square. In Valencia 266 municipalities will do battle, with the big five being Valencia, Alicante, Elche, Castellón and Torrevieja. Last weekend, delegations from local municipalities, led by Torrevieja, and headed by the mayor, Eduardo Dolon and candidated for reelection attended a ceremony held in Valencia. Members of the national and ruling Partido Popular including Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy all attended, including Alberto Fabra, Maria Dolores de Cospedal and Isabel Bonig, participated yesterday in Valencia in the presentation of the candidates for mayors of municipalities with more than 20,000 inhabitants. The Airbus A320 was flying from Barcelona to Dusseldorf and crashed near Digne after a rapid eight minute descent just over 40 minutes into Tuesday’s flight and shortly after reaching its cruising altitude of 38,000ft. A budget airline, wholly owned by Lufthansa, 72 of the 144 passengers were German – including 16 pupils returning from an exchange trip – and 51 of the dead were Spanish. Three Britons were abroad according to the Foreign Office, and other victims were said to be from Australia, Argentina, Iran, Venezuela, the United States, Holland, Denmark, Colombia, Japan, Mexico and Israel. Mr Robin told reporters that investigators had obtained a transcript of the last 30 minutes of the flight, including the dramatic final 10 minutes when First Officer Lubitz was at the controls. “The co-pilot is alone at the controls. He voluntarily refused to open the door of the cockpit to the pilot and voluntarily began the descent of the plane,” said the prosecutor. DESIRE “He had a deliberate desire to destroy this plane. He refused to open the door...and deliberately began the descent of the plane.” Mr Robin said the pilot could be heard demanding to be let back in and later attempts to break through the reinforced door but there was no response from the flight deck – although breathing could be heard and it continued until impact so the co-pilot was alive. “The tower then asks them to send a distress signal but again there is no response from the cockpit so the aeroplane becomes a priority for a forced landing,” he said. “Other aircraft also try to contact this Airbus but no answer is forthcoming.” Mr Robin said the sound of alarm systems warning of the proximity of the ground could be heard on the recording – and the noises of the attempts to break through the door. He said it also revealed an initial impact before the final crash – indicating the plane may have clipped the ground before the final impact. And he said the “most probable” interpretation was the co-pilot was in control and refused to open the cockpit door and activated the control that started the descent. “He didn’t say a single word after the pilot left the cockpit...apparently it is impossible to override the (recording) system.” Asked if it was suicide, Mr Robin answered: “I am not going to mention the word because I don’t know...he had no reason to do this. SUICIDE “When you commit suicide you normally do it by yourself. When you have 150 people with you, you wouldn’t normally call it suicide.” He confirmed that so far there was nothing to indicate a terrorist attack and Lubitz, a German citizen, had no known terrorist or extremist links – although more information about the airman was expected from German authorities. Lubitz had 630 flying hours and joined Germanwings in 2013 direct from the Lufthansa Flight Training School. The Spanish, German, and French leaders have together visited the crash site of Germanwings flight 4U 9525 in a remote area of the French Alps where all 150 people on board died. Mariano Rajoy, Angela Merkel, and Francois Hollande, were also briefed on the rescue operation and the search for vital clues as to the cause of the accident. Mr Rajoy had already declared a three day period of national mourning in Spain and town halls across the country staged a one minute silence in remembrance of the dead. The search for wreckage may take “weeks” according to teams combing the area but emergency workers say they want to work as quickly as they are able to recover bodies from the mountainside – described as “a picture of horror”. The aircraft itself, an Airbus A320, is a workhorse of the skies. It is a single-aisle passenger jet popular for short and medium haul flights.

Following the discovery in Bermondsey, hundreds of people were evacuated from flats on large estates and two schools had to be shut. Tower Bridge was closed in both directions as traffic jammed north and south of the River Thames and stricken bus

passengers reported miles of queues. Lucas Green, a local councillor, tweeted: “Seems our OAPs are hard as nails, drinking tea on top of a 1,000lb bomb for 70 years.” Mr Green described the “unusual atmosphere” after police cleared the streets. “It’s a sunny day, and the roads are deserted,” he added. “People don’t know what’s happening. They should just keep calm and carry on, as they would say in the Blitz.”

Bank victims terrorised LAWYERS REPRESENTING the victims of equity release scam run by a failed Icelandic bank have accused its administrator of terror tactics and harassment. by Jack Troughton In an “extraordinary” development Landsbanki Luxembourg’s administrator Yvette Hamilius is said to have illegally tried to seize the property and contents of an elderly couple. The couple – whose home is protected by court order – live in France but there are over 600 victims of the fraudulent loan scheme across Europe, many living on the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol. And the Landsbanki Victims Action Group in Spain said while it did not want to panic victims but warn of the ruthless measures Ms Hamilius was capable of – and why it was necessary to have homes ring fenced while court cases against the lender moved forward. The equity release scheme was heavily marketed and supposedly a ‘no risk’ package releasing equity in property to people who were ‘asset rich’ but ‘cash poor’. However, when the bank and its parent company in Iceland collapsed in the autumn of 2008, borrowers found themselves hounded as debtors of Landsbanki rather than victims of a scam. TARGET They were also shocked to find themselves targeted by the administrator, who targeted homes for repossession. Action group spokesman Mike McInnes told RTN: “This is a warning to everyone in Spain of what she is capable of doing – especially if you are not represented by a group or under the protection of having your home ring fenced by the courts. “Quite clearly she is capable of performing the same trick in Spain as she has just done in France. Our lawyers are absolutely fuming because this is total disrespect for French laws and the laws of the EU. “This woman has to be stopped from acting in this way. Our lawyers are amazed how she can act like this; it is totally against the rules and regulations.” Action group lawyers said Ms Hamilius sidestepped the courts by using the town hall where the couple lived and sending in the bailiffs – demanding they pay 1.7 million Euros within eight days despite the couple’s original loan only being 200,000€. The legal team is now considering legal action against the administrator for repeated harassment - and what steps to take to “combat the virulent attacks on a few to sow terror amongst many.”

Polar Bear spotted 315 kilometres off of Scottish coast

Crew aboard the offshore supply vessel Atlantic Merlin got quite the surprise early Monday when they spotted a polar bear in the water not far from Hibernia. The massive oil platform is located in the Atlantic Ocean some 315 kilometres east-southeast of St. John’s.

by Keith Nicol No matter where one travels in the world, or even back home in the UK or Ireland, owners that are irresponsible and do not clean up after their dogs have left a deposit, is one of the most asked questions, in what can the council do to stop this. John from Torrevieja took this a stage further asking if Torrevieja could follow the examples of Cordoba or Villena who make ever dog owner provide a DNA sample of each dog so that the police or special officers can check for offending animals, or to be more exact, the dog’s owners, who are responsible. Eduardo answered; “Good morning John. The main problem lies in education. Our local government is putting all possible means to eradicate it; the costs are very important but we continue to seek solutions. The choice of DNA, was considered and studied but ruled out for now. It’s a complicated system and would call for considerable investment, that this municipality can not afford. I know that other cities are interested in DNA testing, but this has not been adopted because of funding problems.” In a similar vein, another reader asked about maintain and replenish the few public open spaces in the New Torrevieja area, in the past few years the underground water system and again, dog droppings. Eduardo answered: “Concerning the first point, I have immediately notified the appropriate department to solve that problem.” Following on the dog issues, apart from afore mention

education of owners, Eduardo added: “The second point I agree with you, tell you that this government team is using all means to try to eradicate this unacceptable behaviour, but unfortunately, the lack of education of certain people still affects the majority of citizens. This government has spared no expense on this issue; building pipi-can, information campaigns, and of course, to order the police to act. But I assure you, my team and I continue to adapt policies to totally eradicate such practices. Thanks for your interest.” Michelle asked: “What if any, are the proposed plans for the area from Cala Horned (Playa de los Locos) to Cala Redonda. This area is particularly scruffy With no defined green space, but appears to be just wasteland?” Eduardo said: “Hello Michelle. I appreciate your comments but unfortunately that area, because of the new Coastal Laws brought in by the former National Government of Zapatero’s PSOE, this area no longer comes under the jurisdiction of the City Council. As you may have noticed, we’ve been working on conditioning and improving the other side of the road. However, in saying that, the municipal government will work with the authorities to improve that area as much as we allowed to. Bellavista’s no longer such a good view

After 20 years, residents and tourists can finally enjoy walking along the seafront

by Keith Nicol TWENTY YEARS ago, residents of Bellavista, Agua Marina in Cabo Roig decided to illegally brick up a seafront walkway linking Cabo Roig and Campoamor to have the entire area all to themselves. That finally came to an end on Tuesday when a team from the Orihuela Town Hall cut down a wire fence, demolished a small wall and started work on repairing the footpath, while some residents looked on. The wall blocked a public domain walkway, which meant that anyone walking along the seafront had to hike

all the way to the Cabo Roig Pyramid before they could make their way back to the seafront to continue their walk along the coast. Councillor for Town Planning, Antonio Zapata, explained that two years ago the council began proceedings to tear down this wall built by the owners of residential ‘Bellavista’. Since then it has been “a long judicial journey to tear down the illegal build that prevented the passage along a stretch of boardwalk.” Specifically, explained Zapata, “the City had to win two judgements,

one from the Ad ministrative de Elche and one of the Superior Court which enabled us to break down the walls. Early Tuesday morning, municipal employees started work to open the passage, which will allow access to locals and tourists to a balcony with great views.” Something as noted by the Councillor, “has been denied to those visiting the neighbourhood for 20 years.” The demolition of the wall will cost around 2,000€, the costs of which will have to be covered by the Bellavista residents.

IN AN ‘Open Letter’, retiring Lions President Iain Bennett wished to add his personal word of thanks to all who have supported the club over the last decade. He said: “Dear fellow Lions and former Lions; the dust is settling on the demise of our Lions Club. Since the closure has been in the public domain I have received over 100 messages and phone calls from those who supported the Club over the years and also from those whom we have helped over the years. You can be assured that our Club was held in the highest esteem locally, also by The Federation of Spanish Lions Clubs and Lions Clubs International. Over the 10 years of our Club we were well served by 6 excellent Presidents, plus yours truly. Each brought their own style and personality to the Club, Chris Bignell, Dom Fulgaccio, Ray Lockley, Terry Crandon, Diane Walsh and Janette Bennett. I must say a special thank you to Peter and Polly Long , both Charter Members and the only Lions who have served the Club from day one. Peter and Polly were unstinting in their support , turning out at times when they would have been better having some time to put their feet up. If it is grammatically correct for a couple to be unique, then they are unique. There were many times when we had to work hard but there were a lot of laughs along the way, some intentional some not. On a personal note I have found it to be an absolute privilege to have served as a Lion and to have shared the experience with so many fine people. What we have achieved as a Club is quite remarkable and it is down to every single member who gave their time to ensure that we were able to help those less fortunate than ourselves. EU probes WFA discrimination by Jack Troughton THE EUROPEAN Commission is currently “analysing” whether stopping annual payments Winter Fuel Allowance to expat pensioners in some ‘warm’ countries is in breach of EU law. Pensioners living in Spain, France, Greece, Portugal, Cyprus, Malta, and Gibraltar, are set to lose the payment this September. Britain currently spends £22 million a year on WFA for people living outside the UK – a payment that Secretary for Work and Pensions Iain Duncan Smith has described as “absurd and offensive”. He introduced a controversial ‘temperature test’ and the rules were officially changed as to who qualified for the money, worth at least £200 for pensioners, rising to £300 for the over-80s. The ongoing battle for the payment – the changes are now on the UK statute books – has sparked anger amongst British pensioners who have paid their ‘dues’ during their working lives. Brian Cave, a pensioner living in France and a campaigner for expat rights under the Votes For Expat Brits banner, contacted his MEP Franck Proust to raise the issue in the European Parliament. DISTINCTION The French MP said the new rules changed conditions qualifying people for the winter payment and the UK was making a “distinction” between the different places British citizens were living. He asked: “Does this change in British legislation comply with EU law?” In an official rely, he was told: “The Commission is aware of the amendments to the UK’s Social winter Fuel Payment regulations. The regulations will come into force on 21st September 2015. The Commission services are currently analysing the UK legislation in the light of the EC law.”

Gulf Stream slows down

THE GULF Stream that helps to keep Britain from freezing in winter is slowing down faster now than at any time in the past millennium according to scientists who believe that the huge volumes of freshwater from the rapidly melting ice cap of Greenland have slowed down the ocean “engine” that drives the Gulf Stream from the Caribbean towards north-west Europe. However, the researchers believe that Britain is still likely to become warmer due to climate change providing the Gulf Stream does not come to a complete halt. Professor Stefan Rahmstorf of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany points out that maps of global surface temperatures indicate an overall warming trend, except for the region south of Greenland, saying “One specific area of the North Atlantic has been cooling in the past hundred years while the rest of the world heats up” . Jason Box of the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland, who helped calculate the amount of freshwater flowing into the Atlantic from melting ice caps, said that the slowdown can be linked to man-made climate change.

A KILLER newt the size of a small car terrorised lakes and rivers during the rise of the dinosaurs, more than 200 million years ago, scientists have discovered. The ferocious amphibian, a distant relative of salamanders living today, took the place of crocodiles as one of the Earth’s top predators. Fossil remains were found buried at the site of an ancient lake in southern Portugual. This is not just hot air CAN I share some good news for a change? Gas bottle prices have gone down for a change, the first time in many years and this is not an early April fools joke. I do hope you will not fall over in shock. A 12.5-kilo butane bottle, used for heaters, cookers, or barbecues in homes that are not on mains gas has just been reduced to 15.80 euros and will remain at this price until the end of April. The price might go further down in May and June in line with current previsions. You can also save more money by taking the full bottle off the rack instead of the gas attendant doing it for a fee. Watch out, they try to charge you more for taking the bottle off the rack. So there you have a bit of good news for a change and that is not just a lot of hot air. Brad Wall, Benidorm

Not as hopeless as it seems Residencia queries MY DOG suffered with Vestibular Disease recently. She was diagnosed with a brain tumour and recommended to be put to sleep. I refused to accept this diagnosis, and made my own investigations. Vestibular Disease is something that can be triggered suddenly, especially in older dogs between 1113 years of age. It will affect their Vestibular System and sense of balance. The causes can be an inner ear problem or more rarely, a brain tumour - the symptoms are very similar. Your dog may seem to be a little unstable on his/ her feet and begin bumping into things, or may not be able to stand or walk without aid. Other symptoms may include extreme Vertigo symptoms...

involuntary eye movement back and forth very quickly; nausea; Diarrhea, uncontrollably rolling in an alligator-like position, head in a tilted position. It can be a very scary sight to see your dog suffering from this condition. The recovery time can be anywhere from a couple of days to a few weeks. Many dogs never lose the head tilt. If your dog suddenly develops this condition, get veterinary help immediately. This will usually involve anti-inflammatory and antibiotic drugs. The situation is not as hopeless as it seems at first. COULD YOU please clear up a query I have? In 2000 when I arrived in Spain I was told I needed to apply for Residencia as a permanent resident. This we obtained and we were given a card with a photo, finger print and the front cover clearly states ‘RESIDENCIA’. After a good many years this was scrapped (by the EEC I think) and then we were informed that we needed new ones. We reapplied around 2007 for those green A4 papers that cost 10€ and a great deal of time and trouble… My point is this: these new certificates do NOT say ‘Residencia’ and having no photo or finger print clearly state that it is not valid identification nor nationality. Therefore we do not have residencia; therefore we do not need to have Spanish driving licenses. And according to a well-informed Spanish friend the only thing you need to live legally in Spain is an NIE number and your passport. Otherwise why do we still hold UK passports - and as permanent residents are we now required to change to Spanish passports? D Weigand

The Maritime Association IT HAS been a busy fortnight for Torrevieja’s Maritime Society.

The group meets every month, with their next meeting at Casa de Galicia, El Chaparral, Torrevieja, on Wednesday 8th April at 12 mid-day. The Maritime Association was formed in 2010 when the local World Ships Society branch ceased. It costs just 5.00€ per year or 6.00€ per couple per year to be a member and enjoy all their events an activities. The talk was given by Councillor Eduardo Gil assisted in translation by the former Director of the Foreign Residents Office, Graham Knight. Eduardo explained that the schooner is scheduled to leave Torrevieja in May or June and relocate for nine months of each year to the south of Spain, where she will be used as a training vessel and for promotional purposes, returning to Torrevieja for three months each year. The meeting was concluded by yours truly, updating members about last week’s front page RTN story, which you read about here first, regarding Torrevieja’s first visit

of a Cruise Ship and the opportunities this gives the city. The following Monday, members had a day trip to Valencia to visit the Jubilee Trust sailing ship, Tenacious. Apart from being guests onboard they also discussed with the Captain about the possibility of the Sister Ship, the Lord Nelson, visiting Torrevieja in 2016. Torrevieja’s council are already putting a plan of action together with The Maritime Society and the Jubilee Trust to bring the sailing vessel into the Marina Salinas next year. The Association is already working on a cruise ship visit in Valencia in May, Torrevieja’s Mayor Eduardo Dolon is going to be giving them a talk on the plans for Torrevieja harbour, a talk on La Cura Termal del Balneario de Confrentes plus plans for cruise ship and lifeboat visits in Cartagena. The film cast and crew from Trained To Kill, spent a couple of hours pretending to shoot at each other and playing dead. The sun shone instead of the rain coming and Director Bill Little said, “We could be waiting weeks for such good weather in Scotland, which is one of the reasons we are completing the film here in Spain.” The film is being produced through ‘Scotfilms Ltd’ and is about a former Special Air Service (SAS) soldier who has to fight against injustice in order to save his family and help a friend bring the criminals to justice while evading the police. The film stars Chris Capaldi (brother of Dr. Who, Peter Capaldi), Bill Little, Rach Leonard, Tony Quirke, Heather Haddow, Kevin Edgar, Cameron Findlay, Michael McNulty, Stobo M Fonzerelli Murdoch, Andy Kowalczyk, John Leese, Pamela Cuthbertson with local personalities including Spanish Boxing Champion Emiliano Casal, entertainer Tony Capaldi and

A nasty accident waiting to happen AS A car driver in Spain, when driving through, for example, Javea Port and the Arenal, my heart is in my mouth practically the whole time, watching out for pedestrians. Knowledge of how to proceed on a pedestrian crossing safely is appalling. Pedestrians just seem to think that itis their right of way, then just walk across without looking left, right or stopping. My understanding is people on foot should step onto the crossing and put their hand up to the oncoming traffic, and wait for the vehicles to stop – but they don´t. Even worse is when a group of people decide to cross, whom are all in deep conversation, which doesn´t stop, and they even can pause on the crossing, totally unaware of the traffic, so the drivers have no idea of their intent. Do they not realise, and some of them must be drivers themselves, that it is much harder to stop a car than to stop walking? Then we come to my worst nightmare, buggies and young children, tourists and not to mention, those who are a bit worse for wear. Pedestrians in Spain have very little consideration towards drivers’, they assume that they have been seen, and just keep walking. Then, of course, the drivers’ reaction time, needs to be taken into consideration as well, which it is often not at the moment. There should be equal responsibility between pedestrians and drivers, which doesn´t appear at the moment, as drivers have to be far more in control than pedestrians. Hence my fear and speaking as an insurance agent, not good. Let us hope that if Spain decides to amend the law,

it is made a little clearer to pedestrians that they must take care and take responsibility. Pedestrians should also do what they can to make themselves and their families, especially young children, safer. In the UK the law is the same, pedestrians on crossings have the right of way, but people are more aware of how to correctly use the crossings, I do feel that pedestrians in Spain should be taught how to cross, similar to the UK system of teaching the Green Cross Code in schools. The lack of understanding here is still also applicable to roundabouts, especially when you arrive at a roundabout with pedestrian crossings on every junction – my heart does a huge jump! Recently I was listening to Bay Radio, and one of the financial companies was discussing the new pension reforms in the UK. They were very concerned that people would be persuaded by unknown and possibly unregulated companies and individuals, offering amazing returns and tax free benefits. I related to the guest speaker, as I often talk and write about opting for price only, regarding insurance, it can often be a serious mistake because when claiming, it could turn into a nightmare. Therefore a pension has been built up over years, needs to be handled with great caution and expertise, protecting you and your family for the future. What a tragedy to lose it all by taking bad advice. We, as lay people, have no idea what is good and what is bad, and depend on an advisor to inform us. This advisor must represent a bona fide company, and carries indemnity insurance, for a start. On the Costa Blanca we are very lucky in having a number

of excellent financial companies and there should be no need to be at all tempted by telephone soliciting, promising the moon and sixpence. Although my company is not in finance, I work alongside a very large, independent business, meaning they are not linked to any particular financial sector, therefore are able to give you more choice. Please take care and do not be seduced by unrealistic returns and suggestions of it all being tax free. Protect your future by being very cautious and take into consideration that if you go ahead on a promise of it being tax free, you will be responsible at some stage for unpaid taxes, for which you could also be fined. Gardens without trees are potential disasters! FEW REALLY enjoyable Spanish gardens are without trees. A mix of trees that jointly achieve the objectives of providing: a. Shade from the hottest part of the day, especially during the summer months. b. Shelter from prevailing hot and cold winds, gales and storms. c. The blocking out of adjacent properties and ugly mid distant views. d. Semi-shade for many semi-delicate plants that cannot withstand temperatures above 30oC including summer grown salad vegetables. e. Shelter for birds and insects and a source of grubs for their food. f. Security by blocking out the views of persons wishing to look in. g. Strong safe branches for supporting hammocks and sky chairs. Whether you meet those needs will depend on three things. a. If you are lucky your builder or previous owners were wise to retain healthy and safe trees. b. Whether the previous owners of your property planted some attractive well located trees and cared for them well. c. Your own choice and siting of trees whether in a new garden or when improving an existing garden. So if you are in the process of purchasing a property, whether a house exists or not, evaluate the stock of trees and decide which you want to keep and those that can be dispensed with. If a house is about to be built negotiate with builder that he will minimise the percentage of the plot used for the storage of materials and machinery and the building itself

to minimise the number of trees that are felled or damaged during construction. Unfortunately tree protection laws and regulations are not as widespread in Spain as in the UK. If you are lucky you will inherit a good number of spreading trees providing ample shade and semi-shade through the year. Whether they are natural oaks or pines, carobs or figs, cherries or apricots, olives or walnuts, or jacarandas or acacias etc prune them to shape before mid-April or wait until next winter. Young self-seeded trees can be trimmed as informal bonsais by leaving them in situ, or by digging and potting them up to start a formal collection of native bonsais. If you do not inherit sufficient useful trees start planting new trees in the next couple of weeks or wait until the autumn – preferably shortly after rain. Make your decisions on the basis of; the quality of shade that will develop as a tree grows leaf, flower and trunk colours, the time and length of the flowering season, the extent of perfume emitted, the probability of being able to harvest edible fruit, the speed of growth and mature size – especially important in small gardens, and most importantly if you aim for a minimum maintenance garden. the extent of dirty fall outs of leaves, fruit, pollen and in the case of pine trees their needles. In general deep summer shade is worth the inconvenience of having to sweep up leaves. Plant trees as part of a boundary hedge, as isolated specimens or as formal/informal orchards in the case of fruit trees. Beware of the dangers of planting trees too near the pool or the walls of buildings and think about what would

happen if a mature tree was to be blown down in a storm. When planting dig a hole twice the size of the pot in which a tree comes in and work some well rotted compost and manure into the hole before planting. Stake securely to avoid wind damage and water well until established. The amount of watering required by mature trees can vary from nil to copious depending on your ambient temperatures, exposure to hot winds, water retaining power of your soil and the needs for producing good fruit. Some useful trees are described and illustrated in the comprehensive book ‘Your Garden in Spain – From planning to planting and maintenance’ now most easily obtained from internet shops such as Amazon Books.

Pension freedom or pension nightmare EVER SINCE the UK chancellor announced he was going to allow pension freedom on UK private pensions from April 2015 the papers have had articles galore on what you can spend your money on, then some started to focus on the fact that there was a nasty sting in the tale for many people who cash in their pension and that was TAX.

Now the time is nearly upon us the main concern seems to be the number of scammers and fraudsters that are after your money. Pension freedom provides opportunities. But it also increases the danger of being hoodwinked by fraudsters eager to get their hands on your lifetime savings. Financial regulators have issued what they consider essential fraud prevention advice for retirees ahead of sweeping pension reforms next month. They should reject cold calls, hang up immediately, don’t get drawn into a conversation the people calling you are professional cold callers who know how to entice you into their schemes. The FCA highlights the following signs that should put people on the alert: People offering high risk investments or scams will often cold call, but FCA-regulated firms are very unlikely to do this so the safest thing to do is hang up. Fraudsters might make contact unexpectedly about an investment opportunity but pretend they aren’t cold calling you, by referring to a brochure or an email that they have sent you. They might make a cold call, email, or follow up call after you receive a promotional

brochure out of the blue. Another warning signal is if someone applies pressure to invest in a time-limited offer, for example by offering a bonus or discount if you invest before a set date, or by saying that the opportunity is only available for a short period. A dodgy firm might downplay the risks to your money, for example by talking about how you will own actual assets you may sell yourself if the investment doesn’t work as expected, or by using legal jargon to suggest the investment is very safe. Beware of promises of tempting returns that sound too good to be true, for example by offering much better interest rates than those offered elsewhere. Fraudsters might call you repeatedly and stay on the phone a long time. They could say that they are only making the offer available to you, or even ask you to not tell anyone else about the opportunity. The FCA’s other tips are to check its warning list of companies running scams or operating without authorisation, and to get impartial help from a financial adviser unconnected to the firm that contacted you. Spanish Capital Gains Tax on a sale of a property NEW: POSSIBILITY of not paying Capital Gains Tax in Spain, for those who are no longer tax residents! OCCASIONALLY OUR clients tell us that for family, health, or economic reasons, they are forced to leave Spain, and in some cases suddenly and without prior notice. Uptil now, those who ceased to be tax resident in Spain, and sold their home in Spain (primary/ habitual residence) after they had already left Spain,(ie. once they were no longer tax residents in Spain), were not entitled to exemption in capital gains tax for reinvestment in a habitual residence, as this exemption only applied to those tax resident in Spain. However, a new legal change in Spanish regulation could be very interesting for those who are not tax residents in Spain ( but were before) who are selling their property here. This is because since January of this year, 2015, following a change in the NonResident Income Tax Law (RDL 5/2004), Income Tax for Non Residents has a new additional provision, the seventh, named: Exemption for reinvestment in habitual residence. Under the new regulation, taxpayers may be exempted payment of capital gains tax, if they are tax residents in a Member State of the European Union (although they are not tax residents in Spain), and if they transfer a property in Spain which has been their main residence here, and provided that the amount obtained by the transmission is reinvested in the acquisition of a new habitual residency or home. This exemption is conditional on compliance with the provisions of income tax law, and therefore, certain requirements will need to be met, such as: the reinvestment of proceeds from the sale of the habitual residence, to be carried out within a period not exceeding two years from the date of

transmission (ie from the date of sale of home.). Spanish rules also foresee the exemption in the payment of capital gains tax if the money from the sale of the home is invested in paying another new habitual residence bought by the taxpayer before, but it must be within a maximum period of two years before. YVONNE HAUGHTON has joined colleagues Victoria and Rodger Cartledge in being selected to play a part in a Spanish TV series. YVONNE JOINS the duo back on set in “Los Invisibles”, this time for TV unlike in Siesta Productions feature film, “The Cucaracha Club”, due for release later this year. She is back in front of a camera this week playing a lawyer, whilst pint sized Vicky is currently playing a BBC reporter, and her father Rodger is playing a cameraman. Stunning Yvonne, who is fluent in 4 languages, has adapted very quickly for a lady who only recently became an actress, alongside her daughters Luccia, and more recently her youngest daughter Sarah, who made her film debut with a walk-on part in a Café scene that Yvonne appears in, whilst making “The Cucaracha Club”. Yvonne made her stage debut 3 years ago in “Allo Allo” playing Helga, and has not looked back since, even playing a stripper in her last stage play, “Not Now Darling” often repeated on Viva TV. Yvonne has become so in love with acting that she took on the post of Treasurer of The ADHOC Players, a natural task for the lady who was discovered while working in her local bank in San Luis. Life has changed dramatically for this beautiful German actress and her English Husband, for they now frequent such company as Spanish Champion lightweight boxer Emiliano Casal and top British Actor Tom Watt. who met Yvonne on set last year while working on “The Cucaracha Club”. They both think that Yvonne is a natural and will go a long way both on stage and on film, and not just driving the fantastic car that David, her husband built specially for her to drive in her film role as a spy. The car, a copy of the white Trans Am that Burt Reynolds drove in Smokey and The Bandit, was displayed in Cabo Riog last week at the St Patricks Day Parade with members of Siesta and ADHOC in the celebrations. THE HOTEL The Colon is small and as such never gets overly busy like those huge hotels at the other end of town. The perfect choice for those who like to do their own thing on a budget and like to get up to the sound of the sea and views that anywhere else would cost twice as much!

THE ROOMS Offering just 37 rooms and sleeping a maximum of 66 guests. Rooms at the front overlooking the sea and Poniente beach offer balconies and are essential to book if you are to enjoy all that this hotel has going for it. Perhaps a little dated but the rooms are simply furnished, comfortable and clean with all you need to enjoy a good nightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sleep. THE BREAKFAST Breakfast is typical continental style with sliced meats, cheese, fresh bread and fruits plus freshly squeezed orange juice. Not a huge choice but quite adequate for the small number of guests they cater for.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW The hotel Colon offers a fine location and as a two star does not of course offer luxuries but given the low cost will be ideal for those on a budget. We only sampled breakfast, but they do offer half and full board too. Expect a set meal rather than buffet. Most non-Spanish guests seem to opt for

B&B only as there are 100Â´s of places to eat nearby.

The Man who would be King!

Elvis Presley is often referred to as the King of Rock ´n Roll, but if there was one thing he was not, it was a man who professed to be a king. Something else I find remarkable about him was that Elvis Presley was his real name, a name you might think to call yourself if you are looking to be famous, yes siree bob, the kid from Tupelo, Mississippi was always destined for greatness. It will be 38 years this August since we lost the great man, but his power and influence in the world of music continues to encompass all who take up the profession. Everyone has a favourite Elvis song, and many millions of his dedicated fans, to this day, have looked after their Elvis Presley LP´s / Cassettes / CD´s with tender loving care. Should you have a wee nest egg hidden somewhere you might want to get it out from under the floorboards and add an item or three to your Elvis collection, and you can do this by going online on May 15th and 16th and Google JuliensAuctions.com. Since Susanna Reid has joined ITV from the BBC she seems to have re-discovered her youthful vigour, and for the second time in not too many weeks has been accused, pretty vigorously, of ´flirting.´ A few weeks ago it was in an interview with David Beckham, which is forgivable, but to have allegedly done the same with David Cameron is, well seriously odd! … David Cameron? … Surely not Susanna!!

Last week The Sound of Music was 50 years old, now 1990 Rom-Com ´Pretty Woman´ is celebrating 25 years in the cinema. Lots of hugging and kissing took place as the entire cast got together for the Today show in America, with Julie Roberts very honestly admitting on camera that fans continue to tell her it’s their favourite movie of hers, with “not anything closer?” Rapper Jay-z headlined Glastonbury in 2008 amid mucho controversy, and Kayne West is to headline this year. A petition called ‘Cancel Kanye West’s headline slot and get a rock band’ has been launched saying “Kanye West is an insult to music fans all over the world. We spend hundreds of pounds to attend Glasto, and expect a certain level of entertainment … Let’s prevent this musical injustice!” Yep! They mean it!

This man has clearly been using you, and the fact that he has been chasing his old girlfriend, whilst taking advantage of your hospitality is unacceptable. He has already done the dirty on you once before. Find the courage to tell him to leave, and start living you life without this parasite.

Caught out

I caught my Father in a compromising position with another woman. This comes as no surprise to me, as he’s had affairs all his life. In the past, when my Mother has confronted him, he did not change his ways, and continued openly to see these women. She told him she was going to fight to keep him. This of course has given him licence to do exactly what he wants, and she puts up with it. What should I do? It is sad that your Father has little respect for the woman he calls his wife, and your mother’s self esteem must be very low if she puts up with this behaviour. But, if she is prepared to turn a blind eye, then there is little you can do. Some marriages aren’t perfect, but muddle on all the same. You may think your mother deserves better, but it is up to her to realise that, and you may need to be prepared for the fact that, she may never do so.

How do I get rid of it? HI AUNTY it’s me again! I have an Acer laptop Windows 7. After I have started my computer I left click on Internet explorer - instead of Google coming up I get ‘survey 2015’ and in a message box it says: “Felicidades eres nuestro visitante a forunado de Hoy haz clic en o.k. por conintunar” There is a red cross right hand side - when I click on it nothing happens and I can’t get rid of it. And every time I try to get my emails this comes up. It does say it’s a survey from GOOGLE.COM and nothing to do with www.google.com - Is this a virus and how do I get rid of it? Once again I hope you can help me - Val

Aunty says: It sounds like your Internet Browser has been “hijacked” by this service. And so your “home page” has changed from what you want it to be. This is becoming a common issue. What has happened is that when you have installed free software, using default install options, it has also installed other items also, one of which has “hijacked” your browser. Some of them simply change the Homepage and search engine settings, which you can change back using your internet browsers options. So here is a guide to help remove some of these “unwanteds”. For uninstalling rogue software that is hijacking your browser the usually process goes along the lines of: 1) Boot into safe mode, enter control panel, and see if you can uninstall any suspicious looking programs that may have been installed 2) Check you extensions/ addons in your browser: In Internet Explorer you do this by:

a. Open Internet Explorer b. Click on the Gear icon Gear Button, then click on Manage Addons c. Go to the tab Toolbars and Extension 3) Reset your browser: In Internet Explorer: a. Open Internet Explorer. b. Open Internet Explorer, click on the gear icon Gear Icon IE, in the upper right part of your browser, then click again on Internet Options. c. Click on the Advanced tab, then click on the Reset button 4) Check your shortcuts that open your Internet Browser. Sometimes, a bit of code can be added to your shortcuts that changes your homepage. a. on all of your shortcuts for your internet browser, right click on the shortcut and select properties. b. Look at the “shortcut tab”.

Printing blank pages AUNTY: I wonder if you might be able to help? I am normally able to resolve issues myself but this one has beaten me. Earlier this year I bought a new printer HP DeskJet 2544 and it worked perfectly on my laptop and with my tablet, and whilst it continues to print using my tablet for some reason it is not printing from my laptop. The laptop is a Dell Vostro running Windows 7 and when I go to print it activates the printer but prints only blank sheets: occasionally it will print a footer or header and sometimes dotted lines where the text should be. I do not recall having changed any settings on the laptop but clearly something has changed. Hopefully you might be able to advise me on what I can check out that I might have missed: Ian Aunty says: You are not alone in having recent issues with a HP printer. I have had a few other people contact me with problems with blank pages being printed. Which may suggest that there is a printer driver that has been updated recently, and that is causing problems. It may help by uninstalling the printer and printer drivers, and then reinstalling the drivers from the HP website (and not the Windows update site).

Ningún, ninguno, ninguna DESPITE THE joys of living in sunny Spain we are still learning about being negative in Spanish. Last week we looked at “never”, “no one” and “nothing”, with a quick look at “neither … nor” at the end. I’ve saved the fiddliest negative word for an article all on its own. The word is “ninguno” which means “none”, “no”, “not any” and sometimes “neither” or “no one” depending on the sentence it appears in. “Ninguno” is often used as an adjective and so behaves in an adjectival way, by which I mean that it changes its ending to agree with masculine and feminine (ninguno, ninguna). Like a few other adjectives, it is used in front of the noun it describes and also in common with some others, the word “ninguno” is truncated to “ningún” when placed in front of a masculine word. (“Ningún libro”, “ninguna mujer” – no book, no woman). This process of truncation is called “apócope” you may be intrigued to know. Other words that do the same thing are “grande – gran” “bueno – buen” “malo – mal” “primero – primer” “tercero – tercer” and “uno – un”. When we put the word “ninguno” or “ninguna” into standard sentences without any particular emphasis, we need the initial “no” before the verb – “No tengo ningún libro” (I haven’t got

any book) “No había ninguna mujer en el grupo” (There wasn’t any woman in the group”). We might also phrase this: “There wasn’t a single woman in the group”, although that is slightly ambiguous is English! “Ninguno” is different from other adjectives in that is doesn’t have a plural form. This can be understood quite easily if we realize that you can’t have more than one “nothing”! However, it is possible (I have discovered) to come across rare and somewhat dubious examples of “ningunos” “ningunas”, so they might exist in theory, but in normal practical Spanish they will not be used. The words “ninguno” and “ninguna” can also be used on their own. In this case they are pronouns rather than adjectives, although you don’t need to know that. “No tengo ninguno” (I haven`t got any, or I haven’t got a single one - of something masculine). “No me gusta ninguna” (I don’t like any one – of something feminine). We can also use the word to mean “none” or “neither” in the following way: “Ninguno de ellos es muy interesante” (None of them is very interesting). “Ninguna de las dos es mi amiga” (Neither of the two is my friend). As you can see “ninguno” and “ninguna” are words to be laid down and avoided if we are “word-for-word translation” freaks. They just translate

as too many different words in English, all of which are very similar in meaning. There is a verb based on the word “ningún” which is rather interesting. The verb is “ningunear” which means to “ignore” “to treat someone as though they didn’t exist” and also “to look down on someone” or as one dictionary puts it “to treat someone like dirt”. That’s not a nice thing to do but it is a very expressive verb I think. Having visited my friend “Google” for some examples of sentences which include the word “ningunear”, they all seem to relate to either politicians or Real Madrid football trainers – por algo será. To finish off this week, here are some more common uses of “ninguno” in set expressions which I think are useful in themselves. “No es ninguna broma” (It’s no joke). “No lo doy ninguna importancia” (I don’t give it any importance. I don’t think it is at all important). “Bajo ningún concepto” (under no circumstances). “De ninguna manera” (No way. Certainly not!) “No vas a ninguna parte” (You’re not going anywhere). “No lo veo en ninguna parte” (I can’t see it anywhere) “Sin dar ninguna explicación” (Without giving any explanation). Well all I can say is that I am definitely not guilty of that final accusation. See you next week!

Book Fair Time THE IXX edition of Torrevieja’s Book Fair opens tomorrow, Saturday 28th, along the Vista Alegre, in front of Real Club Nautico Torrevieja and the Casino. MAIL TELLS me that there many readers out there who are very much in need right now. We all do need something but each of us truly does have differing requests; and many feel that asking for something for themselves is not Spiritual. I say that very much it is. Ask for nothing and you get nothing after all. It’s just like winning the lottery, you have to buy a ticket to start with, and somebody has to win somewhere. There seems to be a wide gap, very often, between what we feel we need, what we should have and what we actually have. It is unthinkable, therefore, that we do not have the right to ask for that which we need. There is nothing selfish in asking for anything we need to help us along this the journey of life. The belief in Spirit assures us that we are looked after; and that a problem shared with Spirit not only helps us to resolve it, but, in so doing confirms our connection and the bond of our faith. Belief is our faith and faith the motivation that allows us to walk freely along that elevated pathway of Spirituality. The question of how we ask is a personal choice. Begging is very unattractive to Spirit, and brevity in request is preferable when so many are asking for the help that they need. At this poignant stage it is vitally important that we eliminate all negative thoughts. To allow negativity to steal the scene is to put the mockers on the whole kit and caboodle before you start. Be clear and concise, and knowing that the freedom of choice exists and that your faith has helped you to make the right connection is greatly inspiring and highly sensitive. The, “I am” monad is very strong and infinitely better than the plea heard in reverse, “Am I?” This monad assumes that you already have what you desire, and that you acknowledge it distinctly and utterly. Monads act as power clusters and they reinforce your greatest wishes, hopes, aspirations and desires affirming them as part of your own power plan in finding the hotline to hope, reward and deserving. themselves that they ask for nothing. These people gain strength from their resistance, but they have, for sure, received some kind of blessing to enable them to be so self sufficient in the first place. The loudest protest is the one made from within, and this brings along the conscious need to aspire to use the system of the law of attraction into play. Generosity allows us to ask for others too, and a rich reward received encourages benefits for all, all along the line. If we deserve we should receive and we can share with others who may have needs we can assist with, as we ourselves are enriched with abundance. This abundance is the reward of faith and love. Trust in the ethos of Spirit and they will provide. Doubt or be hesitant and there may very well be a delay in the transaction or a shortfall somewhere along the line. Most of us truly feel impatience when we need something and it seems to be somewhat out of reach for some reason. Our level of patience may be tested, and sometimes what we ask for is a compromise of what we really want, but we are testing the water to see if channels are working on our behalf the way that they should be. For this reason a request may be muted. Better to ask for what you deserve, what you need and for the reward you feel should be yours. Swallow pride and be honest at all times. Spirit will guide and gift accordingly providing that the award does not block your intended purpose on the blueprint of life, not change your specific psychic destination or alter fate in any way whatsoever. Asking is the hard part. Master it and do not look back. Use the monad that says I am rather then be negative and questioning am I? Be brief and distinct. Use Fiats as these are short prayers sent to an Angel; any angel for any purpose. Believe and faith will generate a reward through the law of attraction, even if this is to be of a financial nature. Needs are just what they are and reward and abundance are the silver lining of the darkest cloud.
