Costa Blanca property sales on the rise PROPERTY SALES in the region are on the rise with Torrevieja leading the charge. by Keith Nicol PROPERTY SALES in the region are on the rise with Torrevieja leading the charge. The revival of the construction industry and the desire for new first and second home is once again being led by foreigners, a fact highlighted by the latest situation report of the Chamber of Commerce. The latest official statistics support this thesis. In the case of licenses for new housing, the College of Technical Architects and Surveyors note that construction
levels will return this year to previous figures before the crisis of 2008. In addition, employers Provia noted that demand for the English market, because of the weakening of the euro against the pound sterling, was among other causes, to “accentuate the market throughout 2015. 31,655 licenses for new housing constructions were issued in 2007 on the Costa Blanca, a figure well below the 52,715 and 52,737 units in 2003 and 2004. The
Association of Surveyors reports that in the first two months of the year they issued 882 new work licenses representing half or those granted during the years of crisis. In 2010 these stood at 1,939, in 2011 they totaled 1,667 and 1,329 in 2012. Half of all new homes starting construction this year are located in Torrevieja (265), the Orihuela Costa (120) and Rojales (77). Continued on page 8.

THE TOWN that experienced the greatest drop was Torrevieja, with 448 more people employed, followed by Pilar de la Horadada and Orihuela. Overall, unemployment figures in the region of the Vega Baja experienced a reduction last March of 997 people. According to statistics provided by Servef, Torrevieja once again led the way in finding people work, accounting for almost half of those leaving the dole, with 448, followed by Pilar de la Horadada, with 147, and 123 people in Orihuela. Other Municipalities that showed significant improvements ncluded Guardamar, where 112 people found work. According to the latest figures, the overall Unemployed in the region through 27 locations now stands at 34,105. It’s not all good news however, as the trend moved in the op-
posite direction in Callosa, where unemployment rose by 22 people during March, Benferri with other ten and eight in Algorfa. The major workers union UGT considered that the decline in registered unemployment in the Valencian Employment Service (Servef) is positive although the union insists that there also a negative factor associated with the figures due to the low quality of jobs created with few being offered full time contracts. Of those finding work, the service sector accounted for 824 people, followed by construction, where 120 jobs were created, agriculture with 62 and industry with 33. As for the age ranges; 718 fewer unemployed were between 25 and 44 years and 112 youths, aged under 25 years, to which must be added another 62 people over the age of 45.

French air traffic cause chaos on the Costas HUNDREDS OF flights were grounded on Wednesday and Thursday, with delays affecting flights through French airspace, in a dispute over increase in pension age. The Civil Aviation Authority has said any passengers due to fly out in the next few days should check with their airline before going to the airport in case their journey is cancelled.
by Jeanette Rice RYANAIR CANCELLED 250 flights on Wednesday from airports including Birmingham, Luton, Leeds Bradford, Stansted, East Midlands and Dublin. Among the destinations on Ryanair’s cancelled were are Alicante and Málaga in Spain. EasyJet cancelled 118 flights. Most of the axed services involve flights within France, but also include return flights to Paris from Gatwick, Belfast and Luton, as well as a Gatwick-Toulouse return service. Ryanair criticised the industrial action by French airtraffic controllers, who want fresh talks on working conditions and are angry at plans to push back their pension age by two years. An easyJet spokesperson said: “We can assure our passengers we are doing everything possible to limit the inconvenience of this strike on them.” Across Europe flight delays had accumulated to a total of more than 278,000 minutes by Wednesday morning, Eurocontrol’s network operations portal showed. Normally this figure would be somewhere between 3,000 and 15,000 minutes, the spokesman said. The strike, which began on Wednesday at 5am and was set to last 48 hours, was called by the main airtraffic union SNCTA, which wants talks over the working conditions of its members. It is anticipated that although the strike period was 48 hours it will take days for the airlines to re schedule those who have had their flights cancelled. SNCTA had originally called the strike from 25 to 27 March but scrapped it after the Germanwings crash in the French Alps in which 150 people were killed.

Nicaragua rejects gay marriage A NEW legal definition of what constitutes a family took effect in Nicaragua on Wednesday, drawing anger from gay groups who say it massively impacts their rights. The so-called Family Code, first agreed in June 2014, establishes marriage as only “between a man and a woman.” Aside from barring gay marriage, the definition precludes gays from adopting and diminishes other rights. “We feel we have been excluded from these laws,” said Marvin Mayorga, leader of the Movement for Sexual Diversity. The rule explicitly states that only man-woman couples, foreign or Nicaraguan, can adopt. Additionally, Mayorga said gay couples would not be allowed to use fertility treatments to get pregnant. Nor would they be entitled to social security protection or inheritance in the case of loss of a spouse. Several gay-rights groups plan to challenge the code in the country’s supreme court. About 600,000 gay people live in Nicaragua.
Expat stands in UK election Need to place an advert? Call 902 118 999
by Jack Troughton
ACCOUNTANT JAMES Jackson is standing against Mayor of London Boris Johnson in the UK General election – hoping to raise awareness of the fight to win a vote for all expats. The former treasurer of Colwyn Borough Council and the Falkland Islands Government lives near Narbonne in France and will contest the Parliamentary seat of Uxbridge and South Ruislip for the campaign group Votes for British Citizens Abroad. James admitted: “I am not at all concerned with obtaining votes. Indeed, it would be a shock if Boris Johnson was not elected with a thumping majority. My objectives are to both raise awareness that many British citizens, passport holders and tax payers, are denied a vote, and to have some ammunition in the event the Government pursuing the restriction of income tax personal allowance to its very own people.” He said it was time Britain supported all its citizens and returned the vote to them and “stop punishing them for living in Europe of which Britain is supposed to be a part.” James had to pay £500 to become a candidate and needed 10 signatures from residents on the electoral register in the constituency – which took 90 minutes to collect. “Once our objective of overturning the 15 years rule was explained, most residents were very supportive and signed without hesitation. One commented that it was disgraceful that British citizens and taxpayers were excluded from voting when the government was considering giving the vote to prisoners – who, incidentally, are excluded from standing as Parliamentary candidates.” He said his actions were triggered by his “disgust” at losing the right to vote after 15 years of living abroad. And James said he believed opponent Mr Johnson was a charismatic personality capable of obtaining media attention to the campaign for an expat vote. “He has already actively encouraged those British citizens abroad who are able to vote, to register to do so,” he added. “He should be a great asset in support of obtaining a lifetime vote for Britons abroad and eventually representation in the British Parliament.” To find out more about the campaign for an expat vote at James Jackson www.votes-for-expat-brits.com

New passport checks may cause travel disruption PASSPORT CHECKS on all travellers leaving Britain were introduced on Wednesday amid fears of delays during peak travel times. by Jeanette Rice New border checks have been introduced which will require every passport to be thoroughly verified before a person can leave the UK. The checks have been introduced at seaports, airports and tunnels which provide exit points from the British Isles. The changes are expected to particularly affect cross-Channel and Channel tunnel travellers, who will now need to have their passports scanned. It is hoped that as airlines currently gather passengers’ information ahead of time, there is unlikely to be a noticeable difference in queues for passengers, although there are fears of delays at peak travelling times. The Home Office says the changes will strengthen Britain’s border security, adding that the implementation of the checks will be staggered at sites across the country. For the first month all passports will be scanned, but only 25% of passport holders will have their details verified. In the second month 50% will be checked. By the middle of June, 100% of passports will be fully checked. More staff have been brought in to cope with the new measures, but whether the changes will have a detrimental impact on passengers will not be known until peak travelling times, such as the summer months. A P&O spokesperson said: “They picked a quiet day for the introduction of the checks. “The actual scanning of passports is quick, it’s the verification that takes longer. We are hoping there will be a fairly seamless transition to the new system.” Those travelling on coaches must all now exit the coach and have their passport individually identified before continuing on their journey.

Stolen yorkshire terrier flags down RSPCA van ALFIE, STOLEN from his owner, was dumped by burglars but managed to find his owner 100 miles away after barking at a passing RSPCA officer’s van. Alfie ran into the middle of a country road in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire, and barked at inspector Stephanie Law’s van to get her to pull over.Ms Law stopped and the Yorkshire terrier jumped in as soon as she opened the door. The RSPCA officer then scanned the dog’s microchip to find out its owner’s address and discovered the seven-year-old dog had been stolen from a house in the West Midlands on 21 March. She said: “I have had plenty of people wave me down for help, but I have never actually been flagged down by a dog in need of rescue before. It was as if he recognised my uniform and knew I was there to rescue him.” His owner Kirsty Mitton, 23, is over the moon to have Alfie back, who seems none the worse for wear after his ordeal.

Eduardo meets the press
Eduardo Dolon is looking to the future
by Keith Nicol EDUARDO DOLON, Mayor or Torrevieja met with members of the International Press last week in an open question and answer session. It was a chance for the Mayor to provide many updates that were taking place in the City and to talk about his plans for the future, should he be reelected. Having taken office in a most difficult time, with Spain not only in a financial crisis but also tainted with corruption charges nationwide, a few of the major projects reached an impass due to a lack of money from National or Regional sources but thanks to the excellent money management of the Government team, many of these projects should be completed within the next couple of months. Projects in limbo but due to be completed in the next couple of months include the opening of the Semana Santa Museum and new sports pavilions at the Sports City and La Mata plus the moving of the Friday Market from its present temporary location. Other projects due to open in 2015 include the residential centre for those with disabilities, the movement of the Pacual Flores Schooner, which will relocate to the south of Spain for part of the year to be used as a training vessel while also be used to visit different ports to promote Torrevieja. Some of the major achievements over the last three years include the moving and expansion of offers through Jean Paul at the Foreign Resi-
dents Office, which is now located within the Tourism Office and two major financial projects: the first to provide aid and assistance were needed for those who have found themselves in trouble due to the financial crisis and the other to clean up the city’s accounts and make the city itself more self sufficient. Over the last three years, Torrevieja’s debt has dropped from 80% to 60% with a further 50% drop, to bring the debt to just 30% over the next four years. Eduardo is well aware of the problems and concerns over dog droppings, graffiti, bus timetables, health centres, garden maintenance, beach facilities, all issues of which he has been working on. He also hopes to have some positive news later in the year about the disused Spa Project, connections to the AVE, new cycle routes, the expansion of the N332 and addition of two new roundabouts plus when confirmed, the new Harbour Project and hotels for the city will be revealed along with a new plan for the fishing fleet, and of course the first arrival of a cruise ship to the city. New staff are being sought to expand the offerings of the Sports City and the City’s museums and the future plans for the city as a whole are very impressive. Eduardo is also giving a number of talks to various Spanish and International group and is always open to answer your questions, which can be sent to: keith@roundtownnews.com.
Continued from front page.. According to the Association of Surveyors, figures this year could reach 5,236 homes on the Costa Blanca with an investment by the promoters of 349 million euros. Promoters Provia noted that the most interest shown was for properties on the first and second line, of which stocks are very low at the moment. Torrevieja, Orihuela and Rojales account for nearly half of all new properties initiated at the start of 2015. However, signs of recovery can also be seen in Alicante City, with 90 new units in January and February, Elche with 90, El Campello with 76 and Pilar de la Horadada has 92 and Elche with 30 to date.

Yacht Clubs seek renewal
Charity news..
ADAPT Easter Parade
LIKE HAVING the preverbial Albatross around their necks, some of the region’s yacht clubs are waiting to hear what future beholds them.
Nautical presidents campaign
by Keith Nicol With most of the yachting areas in Torrevieja having their 30 year leases coming up for renewal shortly, life at the International Marina and Real Club Nautico is slightly tense, as nobody is 100% sure that they will definitely be offered a new lease, and if offered, for how long. The yacht clubs, with expiring concessions visited the Ministry of Infrastructure this week to deliver their application for renewal of the concession to allow them to manage nautical sports facilities, under the Law on Ports of the Generalitat as approved in June. In a joint statement, the group
noted the presidents of other clubs had grouped together with the Association of Nautical Club of Valencia, as well as the presidents of various nautical activity groups including the federations of Sailing, José Martínez; Rowing, Juan Bautista Romero; Canoeing, Juan Antonio Cinto; Motonáutica, Marcos Pérez Manglano and Underwater Activities, Alejandro Carbonell. Eight yacht clubs in the Region find themslves with their concession liciences due for renewal immediately or within the next few years, which is hampering investment in each nautical zone. The clubs are from Cullera,
El Perello, Vinaroz, Les Basetes, Costa Blanca, Torre Horadada, Torrevieja and Dehesa de Campoamor. For the group, this situation should have been solved with the adoption of the Law on Ports of the Generalitat Valenciana, which gives the possibility to award grants directly to the municipality without a tender process to invite competition. ‘Where the applicant is a non-profit yacht club or other sports nonprofit, provided that the conditions of the grant are adhered to. The member clubs now account for 10,184 members and serve more than 40,000 users, including nautical tourists.
Elephants to the rescue
WHEN AN 18-wheeler truck became stranded by the side of a Louisiana road, two elephants inside came to the rescue. Sheriff’s deputies in Natchitoches Parish on Tuesday morning received a call about a stuck truck. Upon arriving on the scene, they saw two elephants preventing the vehicle from overturning. The truck’s driver, also an elephant trainer, walked the elephants out of the cargo compartment and directed them to help prop up the vehicle. “It’s creative,” said sheriff’s Captain Tony Moran, who added the responding deputies were “just astonished to see it.” Leaning side-by-side, the elephants pushed with their weight against the truck, the sheriff’s photos showed. The truck was carrying three elephants from Florida to a circus near Dallas.and had pulled over near Powhatan, Louisiana. The ground was soft after recent rains, the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. After summoning aid to right the truck, the driver walked the elephants back onto the truck, using spoken commands, said Moran. The elephants were unharmed and continued on their way. Authorities did not issue any citations in the incident.

Home won for Ten Euros

Queen Victoria’s first story to be published
A SPACIOUS four-bed house in a Castellón province town has been won in a raffle for just 10 euros. by Jeanette Rice Pepe Bolumar and his family inherited the 141-square-metre home in the inland village of Segorbe, 32 kilometres from the nearest beach and just 80 kilometres from the ski slopes of Javalambre and Valdelinares in Teruel, and needed to sell it. With it being a buyers market they priced the home at just €90,000 but had little interest. They then hit upon the idea of selling raffle tickets. “People would then have the chance to buy a home for a discounted price, and we would still end up covering the value of it,” said Pepe. Facebook and Twitter pages were set up and raffle tickets were sold online as well as through a betting shop in the Valencia region. Ticketbuyers were from as far afield as Canada, the USA, Australia and the UK, although the majority were from Spain and for many, it was their
only hope of having a home for themselves and their families, many whose own homes had been repossessed when they could no longer pay their mortgage due to redundancy, and who were desperate to be able to win. The draw – the first time a house has ever been raffled in Spain – took place publicly before a notary will balls dropping from a dispenser the same as the various State lotteries are decided on TV. Although Pepe’s family sold 32,000 tickets at €10 each, they did not earn €320,000 from the draw – they had to pay advertising costs, notary fees, website maintenance and taxes, including transfer and inheritance tax. The raffle winner’s identity is not known, but the home is now in the hands of its new owner who has the keys and the deeds.

Dukes Of Hazzard’s Bumbling Sheriff Dies
DUKES OF Hazzard actor James Best, who played bumbling Sheriff Rosco P Coltrane in the hit show, has died aged 88 on Monday after a short battle with pneumonia. He appeared in films like One Way Street and on TV’s Annie Oakley before landing the role of Boss Hogg’s hapless and much-tormented sidekick in the Dukes of Hazzard. Tom Wopat, who starred as Luke Duke in the TV show, said: “The work he did with Sorrell Booke (Boss Hogg) probably defined our show as much as the car chases. “He was a fine actor, director and mentor, and an even better friend. He will be greatly missed.” John Schneider, who played Bo Duke, said: “I learned more about acting in front of a camera from Jimmie Best in an afternoon than from anyone else in a year. When asked to cry on camera, he would say, ‘Sure thing…which eye?’ I’m forever thankful to have cut my teeth in the company of such a fine man.” After retiring from acting, Best taught at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. He is survived by his wife Angela, three children and three grandchildren.
A STORY written by Queen Victoria aged 10 is to be published for the first time. The Adventures of Alice Laselles, by Alexandrina Victoria Aged 10 and 3/4, tells of a girl sent to boarding school. Such a fine is fine with me We were recently in England and noticed how the streets were clean in comparison to here. My first thought was people are considerate and thoughtful concerning cleaning up after their dogs. But then we saw stickers on light posts and park benches stating there is a thousand pound fine for dog littering. The thousand pound fine, coupled with clean sidewalks confirmed that the fear of punished is an affective method to stop selfish dog owners. Dog owners should be fined for refusing to clean up after their dogs. Such a fine is fine with me. May I propose a fine for selfish dog owners who allow their animals to dump on streets, and not just a fine, but enforcement of the fine. The revenue from the fines would help pay for the law to be enforced. Some will huff and puff and think having such a law is intolerant and cannot be done. Such a reaction confirms that humans are basically not good. Brad Coe, La Mata
Un-common Sense
RECENTLY I read of a town that passed curfew laws requiring teenagers to be at home between 11 PM and 6AM. This might sound unusual to those of us who live on the Costa Blanca, but there is a common sense reason for it. The curfew is to help put a stop to graffiti, which is something most of us do not like, but do not know how it can be stopped. In many towns along the coast; graffiti is a problem that mayors and councillors are at a loss to know how to deal with. Some people may mock, scoff and find reasons to discredit the concept of curfews, but it does seem like common sense to me. Some will say they do not care whether teenagers spray graffiti, but would soon change their opinion if it were on their property. Teenagers should be at home at night and not on the streets getting into trouble. Sadly, common sense is not too common. Cliff Lander, La Marina
Eyesore on the sea front I WRITE regarding the derelict building on the sea front at Playa del Cura. The beautiful sea front of Torrevieja is totally marred by this horrendous eyesore which houses the town´s homeless alcoholics. Yes, these poor souls need somewhere to live but they are living in filth and squalor, surrounded by junk they collect and rubbish they accumulate. They don’t have toilet facilities and just squat, urinate and vomit regardless of onlookers. Have those in high places at Torrevieja Town Hall blinked and missed the existence of this building and its “tenants”? When under the influence they climb the stairs (extremely dangerous) and there is also a huge gap where the pavement has caved in. This apparently happened a long time ago. These are accidents waiting to happen as a result of the Town Hall’s serious neglect . Name and address withheld

Eras de la Sal rocked by “Sweet California” THE SPRING concert season started in style last Saturday with Spain’s premier girlband playing in the iconic Eras de la Sal.
by Keith Nicol The rain stayed away and hundreds turned out to see Spain’s most successful girl-band of modern times, as the trio entertained late into the night. Singing in English too, the concert consisted of two parts; the first more of a vocal set, highlighting the singing and harmony skills of the trio, while after the short interval, the tempo rose, guitars came out and a little more rock and roll was introduced into the set. The concert was suitable for all ages and indeed, attracted children, teenagers, twenty somethings and parents all came to see what the fuss was about that makes Sweet

California one of Spain’s most successful bands. The trio are Rocio Cabrera, Alba Reig and Sonia Gomez who have been working hard to improve their English to reach out to a worldwide audience. Their voices complement each other and their two sets included songs with catchy, funny and silly lyrics plus an excellent backing group and good production. As on each occasion that an artist visits Torrevieja for the first time, they were presented with a traditional salt boat by Councillor for Culture, Luis María Pizana prior to the start of the concert.

Change Of Venue For Military Wives Concert
Pink Ladies go back to the sixties IT WAS back to the sixties for the Pink Ladies on Friday March 27th as they hosted a special theme night at Sunrise Playa Flamenca, in aid of the cancer charity AECC. Over 800€ was raised on the night, with 120 guests enjoying an excellent dinner, and dancing the night away with popular star Dan Davy providing the nonstop sounds of the sixties. Many of the revellers wore sixties costumes, and several celebrities were spotted among the dancers. Maria thanked everyone for their support, especially including all her volunteer Pink Ladies and Pink Panthers and all those from Sunrise.
The Military Wives Choir
by Patricia Thompson THE MASSIVE demand for tickets for the concert by the Orihuela Costa Male Voice Choir and their special guests the Military Wives choir - has forced a change of venue to accommodate both audiences and choirs alike. The concert was intended to be performed on Saturday 25th April at both 2pm and 8pm at La Zenia church on La Zenia Island. The date and times remain the same, but the venue is now the new Ecumenical Centre - Parroquia Cristo Resucitado - in Calle Diamante. From La Zenia Island go towards Villamartin/Zenia Boulevard until the next island. This has both Mercadona and Lidl stores on it. Turn LEFT here, (to do so,
go to the next roundabout and go all the way round, past the two entries onto the motorway - and then turn right into C/ Diamante). Gilabert the dentist, and De Bassus German pub (with the giant beer glass on top) are on the left. Continue approx. 400m, (past Swedent the dentist), and the church is on the left. The Military Wives Choir is the original group from Chivenor in Devon which appeared with Gareth Malone on BBC television when the now nationally-famous choir was formed. Local pianist Sue Trick, who played for various choirs on the Costa, became pianist to the Military Wives when she returned to the UK. She will play for the

group in April’s concerts. The Orihuela Costa Male Voice Choir, conducted by Nigel Hopkins, will perform an entirely new repertoire of songs in the concerts, culminating in both choirs performing together in a rousing finale. Tickets for the evening performance have long since sold out, but there are still some left for the 2pm performance. These are only available from La Ponderosa gift shop on La Xenia island, at 10€ each. All proceeds will go to various charities in both Spain and the UK. Tickets bought before the change of venue are valid for entry to the new venue. A fabulous day´s entertainment is promised to all supporters.

“Steps for Stroke” Easter walk
The Torrevieja Stroke Support group held their “Steps for Stroke” walk along the sea front in Torrevieja on Easter Monday. Members of TSS along with guests and holiday makers participated in the 5 kilometre walk from the musicians´ statues near the port to the pillars at Monumento Culturas Mediterraneos and back. The annual walk was held to make people aware of the Torrevieja Stroke Support group as well as fund raising. The picture shows all the walkers ready to start the walk. To add colour to the event many of the participants made Easter bonnets, a passing family was asked to select their choice as the best, the winning bonnet was made and worn by Sue Stutely. Sixth Torrevieja Cup success IT WAS another bumper Easter for youth football in Torrevieja as the Torrevieja Cup rolled into town. by Keith Nicol For the sixth consecutive year, the City of Salt hosted what is becoming one of Spain’s most popular Semana Santa football tournaments and this year attracted record numbers with more than 2,200 participants, 130 teams and 200 games played. For four days children of all ages from six to nineteen played in seven different tournament competitions. The tournament attracted four teams from La Liga: Valencia CF, Sevilla FC, Elche CF and Rayo Vallecano and two top teams from the second level Liga Adelante: Albacete and CD Leganés who made their mark in winning some of the categories. For the first time, three Asian teams made their way to Torrevieja, demonstrating that there are no lan-
guage or cultural barriers in sport. The other teams came from Valencia itself, Murcia and Madrid, where the organisers are based. With more than 200 games to be fitted into the four days of competition, the event did away with the traditional opening ceremonies and on Wednesday, the competition began early in the morning, with dozens of games being played on the five different pitches, with the final games of the day kicking off at 8pm. After Thursday’s games were completed, the Torrevieja Cup Party offered a more relaxing and social gathering and all the teams were invited to the Nelson Mandela Stadium, where singer Syra Martin, DJ Maximum FM, Jesus Sanchez and dance group PAYAS mixed music, light and colour
More than 2,200 players took part in Easter’s Torrevieja Cup
to produce a spectacular ceremony. Friday saw the first of finals being played leading to the ultimate seven finals on Saturday followed by the prize giving ceremonies. Saturday was also a day filed with atmosphere as more than 2,500 players, officials and their families watched the games and enjoyed a giant paella prepared by local renowned professionals “Mediterranean Paella”. The awards ceremony was attended by the Councillor for Tourism, Culture, Sport and Hospitality, Luis
María Pizana who presented medals to the winners with all tournament players and teams received a trophy and a commemorative backpack from the tournament. The major teams from La Liga showed the worth of an academy system, which Torrevieja unfortunately does not have. Winners from young to old were: Inter Promises CD, Valencia CF, Sevilla FC, Hercules CF, Rayo Vallecano and AC de T Torres Cabezoa with Vallecas CF taking home the Ladies Open Category.

Summer sunflowers
by
Dick Handscombe Holistic gardener and author
SUNFLOWERS HELIANTHUS are majestic summer flowers and do especially well in Spain in any reasonable soil, if one remembers to water them. At first one thinks of the large single headed yellow flowers on stems up to two or three metres high that look like a summer sun. Growing a single specimen as a child in a small patch, pot or school garden has been the stimulus to many children for the development of a lifetime interest in gardening. Such tall plants are not always easy to fit into a balanced garden layout. However there are now an amazing number of varieties available from dwarf varieties to the Russian Giants from Siberia. They can give valuable displays of colour and interest throughout the summer and early autumn, and with luck beyond. We have even had selfseeded plants flower during February in the middle of our vegetable plot, having survived many nights below zero..
BENEFITS OF GROWING SUNFLOWERS Ten reasons for growing sunflowers come to mind. 1. They are relatively easy to grow. 2.Their wonderful display whether you grow a block of tall varieties in the vegetable garden, medium height varieties mixed in a perennial /shrub bed or dwarf varieties grown in flower pots. 3. Long lasting cut flowers for the covered terrace or house. 4. Flower heads that attract beneficial insects. 5. Supports for climbing beans in the vegetable garden. Or why not at the back of a flower bed? 6. A natural windbreak for lower growing vegetables or annuals. 7.Seed heads that can be separated and sundried to provide seeds as an alternative to nuts or olives with an evening drink, adding to breakfast cereals or fruit ,or crushing to extract sunflower oil if you have sufficient. Make sure you eat them before the oil content turns rancid. 8. Seed heads left on the plant to dry can be cut of with a short stem and then tied to a suitable branch of a tree in the garden to
attract and feed birds during the winter. Loose seeds can also be added to the bird table or the food for many cage and aviary birds. 9. As a sprouting seed – soak seeds overnight. Cut the base out of a 5 litre water bottle, about 8cm deep. Fill with 50/50 soil and compost, dampen, lay seeds on top and cover with damp newspaper. Put in a sunny corner, but remember to keep the paper moist but not soaking. As soon as the seeds start to sprout remove the paper but continue to keep the soil moist. In a couple of days you will have green shoots two centimetres high which you can cut off and add to salads for their flavour and high mineral content. 10. A good first seed for a children’s corner. Some years ago we have also just read that a famous 16th century herbalist, name escapes me, found that sunflower buds boiled and eaten like globe artichokes with butter, vinegar and pepper exceeded the taste of artichokes - as well as stimulating a bodily lust as a natural alternative to Viagra if that is to your taste. Something to try this summer, but with olive oil? VARIETIES TO CHOOSE FROM As already mentioned sunflowers now come in a wide variety of heights, leaf forms, single or multi headed branches of flowers, and most importantly colours. Yellow, red, orange, bronze and cream varieties are now available in single or mixed hues. Unfortunately few seed shops and catalogues stock more than a few common varieties. For variety we have purchased seed for many years from the mail order catalogue of Chiltern Seeds, www.chilternseeds. co.uk. which has had upto thirty varieties The following selection will give a feel for the range of sunflowers available. 1. Drawf. 30 to 45 cms. Pavino. Can grow well even in a 10 cm. pot .Develops a number of branches with a continuing display of 10 cm. flowers. 2. A little taller.40 to 60 cms. Little Dorrit. Asingle stem
with 20 cm. yellow flowers around a dark chocolate centre. Useful for the front of a bed. 3. Mid height.120 to140 cms. Autumn Beauty. Branching stems of 15 cm. flowers in a range of artists colours..bronze, lemon, mahogany, old gold and cream. 4. Tall.200 to 300 cms. Earth Walker. An abundance of multi headed branches of terracota and reddish brown flowers. 5. Even taller! 300 cms plus. Uniflorus gigantus - why not call it Sky rocket? Traditional single headed large plate sized yellow flowers .It is obviously possible to achieve a breath taking display. PLANTING SEEDS Plant singly in plant pots for planting out when 15 cms. high or growing dwarf varieties to maturity. One can also plant seeds direct but inevitably one looses a few seeds to hungry mice and snails. .Plant in a rich water retaining seed compost or garden soil. Work in some TerraCottem water absorbing/stroring soil improver to help maintain a constant moisture content to sustain uninterrupted growth. CARE OF SUNFLOWER PLANTS Although established plants can survive in poor soil this only where there is deep soil that the tap root can explore searching for water. In most soils it is best to water and feed regularly to achieve maximum heights, number and size of flowers and seed heads . Apart from a little leaf rust sunflowers give little problem provided you establish strong young plants. Don’t over water seedlings as they can rot off. They do not like marshy conditions. Sunflowers do best in full sun but will tolerate semi shade.

THIS WEEK saw possibly the biggest UK pension revolution since the idea of a pension was first aired. For the last few months International Advisers have had a great deal of reading to do to ensure they understand the new rules, and we are certainly not finished yet. There are many loose ends at this time but in order to give you, the reader of this article, something of value I will summarise what has happened and what the latest thoughts are. The following table is a simple summary due the “ifs” and “buts” of the pension rule changes. But it must be said that it looks like a quick pension cash will not be available at the moment. It would appear that the administration teams of the various pension providers are not yet ready to be able to cash-in and release your pension fund, and when they do, they have been instructed to deduct the full tax per each tax band (if non UK resident then no UK personal allowances will apply) and if non resident advise the tax authorities in your country of residence that you have cashed in your pension, so they can assess if you owe tax. Reminder about claiming for the Spanish Inheritance and Gift tax back WE REMIND our readers that recently, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), in its decision of 3 September, ruled against Spain, confirming that it’s Spanish Inheritance and Gift Tax is contrary to the principle of free movement of capital within Europe. This is because in practice, the heirs (beneficiaries of the inheritance) and donees (beneficiaries of a gift), usually pay a much higher Inheritance and Gift Tax in Spain if they are non-residents in Spain, or when the deceased or the donor are non tax resident in Spain, since in these cases Spanish state tax law and scale applies, rather than Autonomous Community law, which would usually be much more advantageous and give tax benefits. As informed in previous articles, this is a really good news for people who have paid Spanish Inheritance or Gift Tax in the last 4 years at the national rate as a nonresident but being tax resident on the European Union, as you could be entitled to review these taxes paid, and claim back the amount overpaid, in accordance with the judgment mentioned. In most of the cases, you would be able to claim back for the majority of the taxes paid. We would like also to remind our readers that we are offering our clients
the possibility to claim and apply for the IHT paid to be recalculated at the rate of tax residents in Spain, and asking for the difference back. If this process is denied in the first instance by the taxman, we could appeal the tax authority’s decision in front of the courts. LEGAL FEES: We offer a NO WIN NO FEES deal to our clients, for the administrative claims in front of the Taxman, meaning the initial petition and the administrative appeal of it, will have no costs should
the petition not be accepted. If finally we need to present a second appeal in front of the ordinary courts, and we decide to do so, then it would be some minor costs to be paid, like procurator, etc. In these cases we will know and inform our clients about them in due time, and in every case before start the court case, so you the client will be able to decide to proceed or not. DOCUMENTS As informed previously, in order to be able to proceed on your behalf, and ask for the payment of the taxes

Our mystery man on the street enjoys a sneaky look at the BRISA BEACH a quality 4* prime location hotel The Hotel Totally refurbished to a good standard 4* hotel in 2011 the Brisa Beach is located directly on Levante Playa, Offering fantastic sea views from all of the 70 new balcony rooms. The Brisa is a favourite of the best travel companies and is a firm favourite with the more demanding of guests. Here you can expect a good quality beach holiday in a prime location with stylish guest areas. Only a 10 minute walk to cabaret bars and the lively night bars and discos. The Rooms All rooms and bathrooms were completely refurbished in 2011 and offer modern bright tastefully decorated rooms all with a balcony and either direct sea view room or side sea views. Facilities include satellite TV, room safe, hair dryer and air-conditioning. The daily maid service is fantastic,
exceptional attention to detail. Beds are very comfy and nicely firm. The Food Served buffet style in the lovely bright restaurant food is tasty with a good selection that will tempt even the fussy eaters, in summer you can also enjoy a weekly BBQ night plus gala dinners. The staff are happy and make for a very pleasant dining experience. With just 70 rooms the restaurant is never over busy, a real bonus when compared to some of the nearby giant hotels! The Pool Terrace The pool and sun terrace overlook the beach and allow for a relaxing place to sit and watch the resort in full swing and if you fancy the beach it really is a hop and a skip away. Finding a sunbed is not too much of an issue even during high season.
What You Should Know We loved the Brisa, from the moment you arrive you are greeted by happy friendly and efficient staff which immediately makes you feel welcome. Despite
being in the area popular with British guests, most guests are not British which depending on what you want for a holiday is either a good or bad thing. What makes this hotel stand out from
the rest is the 100% top service, we would defy anyone to find anything negative to say in fact! For great rates see (if you find a room book it, this hotel fills up early)

LAST WEEK Kim Kardashian found out that although she has mucho cash, her zero talent has jumped up and bit her bumski. Membership Director of the exclusive Soho Club in LA Tim Geary said “we value ‘creativity’ over how much someone is worth, we denied access to every Real Housewife who applied, and Kim Kardashian has unsuccessfully tried numerous times!” Love you Tim!
ALL IS seriously not well in the Royal Household. This coming Tuesday 14th, 120 members of the Public and Commercial Services Union could well take industrial action against the Queen and Co. It’s all about them being asked to carry out unpaid duties at Windsor Castle, and the Royals go there every Easter for a month ... Oh dear oh dear.

WITH A background in family and matrimonial mediation, Life Coach Sara Bell helps Readers with their daily worries. If you are having difficulties with relationships, family, work or any other aspect of your life, then help is at hand.
I could just do with a friend My wife died 5 months ago. She was everything to me, and I have absolutely no joy left in my life. I am sad and lonely every minute of every day. My wife didn’t want me to be on my own. Before she died, she said she wanted me to find someone else. I don’t want a new partner, however, I feel so unhappy and alone. I could just do with a friend. Social clubs, particularly for the bereaved, are a good place to start. Not everyone who has lost their spouse wants to take up with a new partner, but are just looking for company and companionship. These groups are invaluable because all of their members are in a similar situation, so you will receive the support and understanding you need, as well as joining in with the many social activities the Group has to offer. Suffering a bereavement is one of the hardest experiences we have to endure in life. Try to keep yourself busy and the time will pass more quickly.

Online affair
My wife has announced she has been having an online affair with someone she talks to in a chat room. They have never met, and he lives a long distance away. We have a son, and she plans to leave, and take him with her. I am having to accept the fact that she wants to go, because I realise the marriage has been dead for some time, but the issue is that she doesn’t really know this man, and I am worried for our son. Your wife needs to understand that, while she may want to leave, you have valid concerns about your child, which is quite natural. You could suggest that she initially go and meet this man on her own, for a holiday to see how things work out, and leave your son with you in the meantime. If you are still not happy about the situation, I suggest you see a good family solicitor to see what your rights are.

Battery issues
HI AUNTY: I’m running an Acer Aspire laptop with Windows 7 and the time keeps changing when I switch off. When I first switch on and try to load Firefox I get an error message ‘unable to confirm page security’- however, once I correct the time it all works fine. I am linked to “time.windows.com” but I understand that it only synchronises weekly. Any help you can offer would be appreciated. Regards, Jim. Aunty says: The issue of your PC’s time reverting back to a default time, will be down to your PC’s internal battery running low and not able to power the memory when the PC is switched off. If you are on “default time” and you try to access webpage, they may be blocked for security reasons. For example if your PCs time is “01 01 2001”, then it will think something is up if it tried to access a web page of today’s date...how can it trust a website that has a date stamp of 15 years in the future! So you will need to disconnect the pc from the power, open the case, locate the battery, carefully remove it, find and carefully insert a replacement battery of the same specification. Response: Thanks - I thought there was a backup battery but it never mentioned it when I used help.
Homegroup Dear Aunty, until recently my Lenovo G500 an my wife’s HP Stream laptops were able to access each other in the homegroup on my Telefonica wi-fi router. Yesterday, for no apparent reason, my wife’s hard disk became almost full. To resolve this problem I had to restore her laptop to its original factory settings. This was successfully achieved and I joined her back into the homegroup. However when either of us goes into the homegroup we are told there are no other pcs available despite them both being switched on and media steaming enabled. Both are set to share all files with other devices in the homegroup and are visible to each other in the homegroup settings. Any suggestions? Geoff
Aunty says: Firstly, is it a bit strange to “restore to factory settings” when a hard drive becomes full. You can simply delete unwanted files, or move files you want to keep to an external drive. Or run the disk clean up options in Windows. It would suggest that you have not set up the media streaming options correctly on one or both PCs. Microsoft have a help page for this, which i suggest you read and make sure you have implemented all the required steps. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows7/streamyour-media-to-devices-and-computers-using-windows-media-player
Android problem HI AUNTY: I have a problem with my Android tablet purchased 31/07/14. 8GB A23 Dual Core Android 4.2 tablet PC Bluetooth camera 1M Red is the information I have. When I switched on yesterday across the screen in large letters was DEMO: I’ve tried all I know to get rid of it but it remains, the tablet will not function properly. Can you help? Bob
Aunty says: Many people have had an issue with the word DEMO appearing on the Android tablet. Some have solved this by resetting the tablet to factory settings - note you may lose all personal data on the tablet. It maybe that the manufacturer of your tablet, which I cannot see mentioned, may have an update file available on their website that fixes this issue. As for some tablets, an update file / patch has been made available, and the problem has been resolved by downloading and running this patch for the tablet...

spanish Direct Object Pronouns
Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin
QUITE A few months ago I wrote a couple of articles about “direct object pronouns”, using as examples the words “lo” “la” “los” and “las” meaning “it” and “them”. We saw how they can link to the ends of verb infinitives to make up a longer word, like this: “Voy a cocinarlo” (I’m going to cook it) “Quiero comprarlas” (I want to buy them). At that stage I kept things simple in two ways. Firstly, we only looked at “it” and “them” and avoided “me, you, him, her, us” and secondly, we stuck to examples with infinitives of verbs, where we were able to simply tack “lo, la, los, las” onto the ends of the words. Now that we’ve learnt a bit more about verbs, and particularly how to conjugate them (that is, change their endings) in the present tense, we can now expand in these two directions. So, we are going to learn more direct object pronouns and also find out where they should go in sentences. I would imagine this might take more than one article, as we are going to take this fascinating subject step by step and try and make sure no one gets left behind. First and foremost then, let’s remind ourselves about what we are talking about. In other words, what does “direct object pronoun” actually mean? To answer this question, let’s look at this sentence: “The boy reads the book”. In this sentence boy is the subject and book is the direct object, in other words the thing that receives the action of the verb “reads”. The word book can be replaced
by the pronoun it, giving us the sentence “The boy reads it”. We would change a sentence in this way if we already knew what “it” referred to. In English we call the words that replace direct objects in this way “direct object pronouns”. One main difference between Spanish and English is in the word order. “The boy reads the book” in Spanish is “El niño lee el libro”, with the same order as in English. However, when we say “The boy reads it” we place the “lo” in front of the verb, like this: “El niño lo lee” (“the boy it reads”). Now the direct object might be a person rather than a thing. For example, this is how we would say “The bus leaves us in the square”: “El autobus nos deja en la plaza” (“The bus us leaves …”). The direct object pronoun appears before the verb when that verb is what I call “live”, in other words it is a conjugated verb agreeing with the subject of the sentence (El autobus deja – third person singular form). The difference between this and the first examples, such as “Voy a cocinarlo” is that the “live” or conjugated verb is the sentence is “voy”, whilst “cocinar” is an unchanging infinitive form, to which object pronouns can be tacked on to the end. So far I think that is fairly simple, but there is rather a lot more to say about these direct object pronouns, so if you do feel there are some big gaps, hold on tight and I will do my best to expand the subject next week, and quite possibly the week after as well!

6 out of 10 People fail at Operation Bikini Not trusting miracle diets and forming healthy eating habits, key to weight loss success. Operation Bikini has become a race against the clock to reach an ideal “perfect body” we dream of showing off in the summer, but which eludes us. In fact, six out of every 10 people abandon these quick weight loss diets, and 70% do so because of their adverse effects; of those who do finish, 70% quickly regain the lost pounds. Specialists from Quirón Torrevieja and Quirón Valencia Hospitals give us the keys to successfully wage the battle to lose those extra pounds. Miguel Sánchez Barredo, Psychology specialist at Hospital Quirón Torrevieja explains how “it is essential to ensure that this shaping up process does not become an anxious race against time in which we intend to take short cuts to have a “perfect body”, aesthetically speaking, from one day to the next. This type of approach usually leads us to periods of great sacrifice that end up causing frustration, discomfort, impotence, low self esteem and abandonment.” Sánchez Barredo’s proposal is to opt for choosing a healthier lifestyle, one of “loving oneself, where the goal is physical and mental wellbeing,” leaving any hurry aside, and placing oneself in the hands of competent professionals. Doctor Caridad Gimeno, Nutrition specialist at the Obesity Unit of the Hospital Quirón Valencia provides the keys to this healthy lifestyle: “The most effective treatment is a balanced hypo-caloric diet, with the characteristic elements of the Mediterranean diet,
avoiding the consumption of simple sugars, such as sodas or sweets, and overly fatty foods.” She also points out that support from professionals is essential. “Obesity is an illness that requires treatment, which must include specialist doctors, such as nutritionists, dieticians and endocrinologists, all of whom will advise on the most adequate medical or surgical treatment, depending on the degree of obesity or excess weight of the patient.” Doctor Gimeno advises on the importance of daily aerobic exercise, such as brisk walks, cycling, swimming, playing tennis or dancing. “The most important factor is to acquire healthy physical activity and eating habits, which will allow us to maintain the weight loss in the long term, and lower the risk factors associated to inactivity and an unbalanced diet, such as diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, joint problems, depression, and cardiovascular problems, among others. There are no miracle diets. Doctor Gimeno is blunt about the “short cuts” to obtain the desired weight loss: “Currently, there is no medication in Spain that has been specifically approved for treating obesity.” She also insists that inadequate treatment may place our health at risk. “Just like we consult with a specialist for other pathologies, and we do not decide on the treatment ourselves, we must do the same when it comes to excess weight,” Doctor Gimeno points out. Tips to succeed when loosing weight: Set yourself a goal: be realistic, as well as flexible. Consider that we’re talking about a change in lifestyle,
not merely loosing pounds or inches. Create a plan to reach the goal: consult professional specialists, follow the guidelines they set, and keep a record of the objectives you are reaching. Avoid negative emotional states: keep your emotions in shape by exercising, meditating, and giving yourself rewards once in a while (make sure these are not hyper-caloric foods, of course), by taking some “me” time or interacting with people who make you feel good. Never eat when you’re stressed or worried: in these cases, you’ll surely end up using food to quench anxiety, and that’s a bad choice. Talk to someone, call a friend to talk to them about your problem, try relaxation exercises, write a journal, take a hot shower, or go out for a walk... Postpone mealtime for a few minutes, until you feel more relaxed. Before quitting, get a sheet of paper and a pen, sit down and write: “why do I want to give up?” Surely, by the time you’ve written down some reasons, you’ll have realised that you really have more reasons to keep working on your health than to quit. Broken Heart Syndrome
SURELY PEOPLE can’t die from a broken heart! Well actually yes, they can!
Broken heart syndrome is the common term for Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy. Other terms for the condition are ‘stress cardiomyopathy’ or ‘apical ballooning syndrome’. Symptoms are similar to that of a heart attack although the two conditions are completely different. A heart attack occurs when a blood clot forms in a coronary artery, reducing or cutting off the blood supply to a part of the heart muscle. Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy causes temporary swelling of the heart, the large or small arteries may narrow and the normal pumping action of the heart is disrupted. Very little is understood about this condition which was only identified in the 1990s by Japanese researchers. The research is still in it’s infancy but it is thought that the sudden release of stress hormones such as adrenalin and cortisol play a role. The condition can be treated and normally resolves in around a week although it can be fatal. Broken heart syndrome affects more women than men and is more common in the over 50s age group. An episode of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is normally preceded by a sudden shock, intense physical / emotional
pain or fear for example: Death of a loved one Accidents e.g. car accident Natural disasters Being given bad news Divorce Job loss Public speaking or performance It is even suggested that a surprise party could result in the birthday boy or girl ending up in hospital! There is nothing that can be done to prevent broken heart syndrome apart from avoiding heartbreak situations which is impossible for most of us in this life! Managing stress is possible, however, and we should all have healthy strategies for coping with life’s difficulties. Counselling and therapy when things are tough can literally save lives. Some people will have more than one episode of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy and doctors may prescribe beta blockers to reduce the effect of stress hormones on the heart. Any chest pain, especially when accompanied by shortness of breath or other symptoms, always requires immediate medical attention.

Horoscopes The Mars/Neptune sextile provokes changes to schedule and re timing of events. This is because time is of an essence and there is a need to reschedule to allow fate to intercede in a matter of urgency. This allows you to reconsider what you are doing, and hopefully too, alleviates the pressure that you are currently forced to work under. The Venus opposition of Saturn brings frustration into an already difficult situation. With Venus aiming at joy, beauty and happiness, Saturn twists fate into ruling on the responsibility and pressures of life in general. Add to this the problems brought on by a friend not taking your side under difficult circumstances and it’s a confusing and heavy week. Venus enters and sets the emotional cat amongst the pigeons once more. Love has has to take sides, whilst you gain sufficient strength to see through the number of pitfalls and are able to put them in a wider more transparent context so they can work for you; not you for them. Your sensitivity is maxed out, but all will be OK if you just bring it to your level . Mercury brings a sufficiency of obstacles designed to test your resillience and determination to see things through to a satisfactory conclusion that is right for all concerned. Whilst things won’t get any easier for you just yet, neither will they become more complicated, and you will see that there is a large loophole looming to allow an escape. The Sun conjuncts Mercury at the start of the week bringing creativity and intelligence into projects and schemes. You are highly tuned and will feel very connected as you prepare to take on something new and rather wonderful. Do not feel that you are out there on a limb, when in fact portents all along the way are saying to just go for it! As Mercury enters into sensitive and all embracing Taurus you are able to lower your current defences and rely on your own soul energy to see you through. If it isn’t broken then do not try to fix it, since conservation and preservation are important elements; and the positive energy of Taurus brings inspiration, amidst the start of newly found depths. As Venus trines Ceres then time is right to put your best foot forward and to make your own wishes known instead of holding on to your current silence. Venus puts love back on the menu and helps you to better see where progress has to be made if you are to succeed in the current minefield of negativity brought about by the ignorance of others. The midweek sextile between Mars and Neptune serves to open your clearly psychic centres. Your own magnetism combines with clairvoyant energies bringing a very new vista of the future. This is a time to make more public your own set of gifts and to seek the guidance that you open your gifts to deeper and stronger spirituality. Mercury and Saturn clash somewhat at the end of an eventful week. Do not give an immediate answer to a pressing question, because stalling for time is the very best policy right now. Only this way you can be as impartial and as fair as you can; and if someone doesn’t like what they hear, they do not have your true interest at heart anyway! Mercury brings energy to you as this mighty planet of communication seriously takes on your planetary leader, Saturn. Used to being in control of situations Saturn often only sees one direction ahead, but with the current choices offered there is more than one way to skin a rabbit; as you are happily about to find out, all by yourself. Wayward Uranus travels across the Cosmos and leaves a small trail of destruction that will challenge and stimulate you in the week ahead. You are maintaining a silent stance on a project you feel is going to veer out of control, but then you really do not want to get involved in any way since, just right now, you have other vital fish to fry. Mars directs Neptune and gives some sage and friendly advice that will help your equilibrium in the next few days. You need a guiding hand and it is good to know that you openly encourage the supportive well intentioned energies of those around you who really do have your interests at heart. They know how you care so well for them!

Size matters!
HOW WONDERFUL it is to walk into a British supermarket here in Spain. Whilst I can remember the days way back when you had to smuggle tea bags in your luggage, and Mercadona had never heard of coleslaw. Back in those dark days you relied on trips back to the UK to buy Cheddar Cheese that didn’t taste like soap and Tunnock’s Caramel Wafers and Iron Bru had to be smuggled over the border. What did you smuggle in in your knickers in the distant past? Being able to visit a well stocked British Supermarket here in Spain is to enter into a treasure trove. I am not someone who has to rely on eating British food, really, but entering into that shop of lined up British goods all waiting to be bought is such a wonderful experience. On a recent visit I was not disappointed at the range of foods available. Those sauces and pickles alone get my saliva going. My partner, Carl, once had to make his own version of Branston Pickle to go with my cheese sandwich; and it was wonderful...but it wasn’t Branston and then you couldn’t buy a jar for love nor money! The lemons proffered by a generous neighbour became very quickly Lemon Curd, and the oranges, Breakfast Marmalade. Visitors were briefed to bring Fruit Pastilles, Earl Grey Tea and Sugar Free Jellies as well as Cadbury Chocolate. They were bullied into raiding UK Supermarket shelves and cramming their cases with long desired delicacies and everything else from hoover bags to a copy of last night’s London Evening Standard and bayonet light bulbs were requested as highly suitable and highly prized booty. That first entry as a Spanish resident into Mercadona in Denia revealed that even in such a high profile flagship store there would be no Hummous, no Haagen Dazs ice cream and certainly no fresh pasta or Diet Coke. We survived however, and yet, how wonderful it was when little
Kenny‛s Postbag
treats came your way, and guests arrived rustling M and S carrier bags. However, back to my last trip. There were all the products and labels from the past, some like Bird’s Custard and Kit Kat and Rolo that haven’t changed at all, only the price. But, shock horror, what has dramatically changed is the sizing. What has happened? I hovered over a Yorkie Chocolate Bar, which used to be labelled quite clearly, “Not for Girls” and which was in its chunkiness a food snack only appropriate for long distance lorry drivers who had just been eight hours on the road...now it would appeal only to Barbie. The purchased Mr. Kipling Almond Slices appeared to be in a traditional packing, but when that sealed carton was opened it revealed doll’s house fondant fancies that could be demolished in just one bite. One wonders how minuscule is a Cadbury Flake, and would a finger of fudge be enough to give a girl a treat these days? The mind boggles! A chunky Mars Bar on today’s shelf is smaller then the regular Mars Bar ever was, and as for a Wagon Wheel, don’t go there......they used to be of near tractor tyre size, now they are smaller than a mini. I sound greedy I know, but at this rate all those beloved treats we collectively adore will disappear entirely. OK I know it is all about obesity and cutting down, but this is ridiculous. Spirit does not shrink in any way. Business is booming for all Spiritual Organisations as we take on the openness and the loving care offered by belief. Spirit does what it says on the packet, and although there may be no special reductions everything is as it was and about to get better as more and more inspired people find their entry and rightful place. Life cannot shrink the product in any way and it remains under wraps until we fancy a bite...or two?

KENNY, I have recently had a tarot reading and it has worried me greatly. I think that I have taken things the wrong way, but it has caused me to fear an event in the near future. What can I do? Helen “J” B. Helen, I have to more to be able to help you. Naturally your reading would be better explained by contacting the tarot reader concerned, and I can’t really comment on it. I do hope that there is something you have homed in on here that seems a lot worse than it is. Look at the event causing your concern with all the positive energy you can muster and try and prove the reader wrong....is my best possible advice!

A career in Golf
Good luck to one young man taking his first steps! by Tony Myles IN THE last few days I had the pleasure of joining a four ball which included a teenager who is creating a career for himself in golf. He is James Ivory and he is just 18 years old. He was seven when his dad first introduced him to the game and even from that early age, it was evident that he had a natural ability. His family moved from Watford to Spain and that was when James started to hit some golf balls at Javea driving range. With that experience behind him he then tackled the full 18 holes at Alicante. Those who know this course will appreciate that it is not easy and is a tough test for most golfers. James was undeterred by this and indeed it fired his enthusiasm for the sport even higher. James During a recent Campbell Lamont Ivory outing to El Bosque one of the aspects of his game which impressed everyone, and is surely the mark of a good golfer, was his ability to recover from shots which were less than perfect. Without exception any wayward
shot was followed by one right back into the heart of the game. Like all the successful pros, James spent more time studying the contours of the green than on any other shot. This meant that his putting was positive and accurate. SO HOW IS HE MOVING INTO PROFESSIONAL GOLFER? His first step is to join the Campbell Lamont organisation and he will available for lessons within a very short time. Meanwhile James is preparing himself for an extension in his training as he applies to join the PGA Foundation course at Birmingham University as an Assistant Professional. Assistant Professionals are expected to continue playing and improving their own golf game. During each year of the programme they should play in a minimum of seven qualifying tournaments each season, meaning that over the three years of training, twenty-one rounds must be recorded and submitted, to be eligible to apply for membership. The syllabus is comprehensive and covers coaching, technology and career and personal development. Graduation from the course after three years can lead to a variety of employment opportunities anywhere in the world. We all wish him every success and please make a note of the fact that you first heard about him here.
Head He2ad Campbell - Did you do anything special over the Easter weekend? Tony M - Just the usual really and for many ex Pats in Spain there is little difference between weekdays and weekends. Campbell - That is why some social events can happen during the week. Tony M - You are right and you put me in mind of something from my school days. Campbell - Apart from having an astonishingly good memory what gem are you about to share? Tony M - When I was at school I would always resent the fact that Monday was a long way from Friday but Friday was very close to Monday.

New DGT Instructions for European Driving License Renewals by Keith Nicol MUCH SCORN has been levelled at Spain’s DGT as they once again failed in their attempt to clarify the correct rules and regulations when it came to whether or not, one needs to change or renew a driving license. Acoording to Trafico, anyone changing their UK, Irish or EU licence for a Spanish one is not actually changing it, but renewing it. The first thing you should be aware of is that the regulation is only for Spanish Residents, so if you are not on the Padron and hold residency in Spain, the following does not apply to you. Details sent from Trafico state; “In order to clarify some of the confusion which has arisen over foreign residents in Spain changing their driving license for a Spanish one, the DGT has issued an instruction which details the obligations of both drivers and law enforcers in dealing with the issue. Firstly, if your license has an indefinite date, or more than 15 years validity and you were legally resident in Spain before January 19, 2013, you should have already renewed your driving license. If you only became resident after that date, you have until 2 years from your date of residency to renew. Secondly, if your license has expired or is due to expire, you must renew it in your country of residence: in other
words, if you are a resident in Spain, your current license (no matter if it is from the UK, Ireland or EU), once it expires, must be renewed in Spain.” The good news is that Trafico realise that there has been a lot of confusion and they have decided that “No sanctions of fines will be issued before January 1st, 2016, to allow drivers sufficient time to renew their license.” However, if a driver is stopped by traffic police and is found to be in violation of the rule and has not renewed their license and exchanged it for a Spanish equivalent, then their details would be recorded and forwarded to the DGT, where details would be added to the central computer system, so that if the driver is stopped again and is found still to have not changed their license within a six month period, and after the enforcement date of January 1, 2016, then sanctions would become applicable and a 200 euro fine would be issued. There will be leniency if the driver can prove that an appointment has been made and is due in which the renewal is scheduled if it is beyond the six month or final date period. More information and the full text about driving in Spain can be found by searching for “N332” on Facebook or visiting http://n332.es.
