AN AMBITIOUS new redevelopment scheme to revitalise the area around the iconic Eras de la Sal in Torrevieja was announced this week. The restructuring of the area will involve an investment of 1,185,800 euros. Torrevieja’s Mayor, Eduardo Dolon stressed that; “The completion of these works will provide the zone with a double objective of great significance for the city: first revitalize one of the city’s most historic relevance of the municipality and, second, completing the pedestrian route along the coastline around urban areas.” The Municipality is planning to implement the scheme in 2016 with the tender for the project being financed through municipal funds (793,300 euros) and the Council of Alicante, through subsidies and Plan de Obras y Servicios de Competencia Municipal de 2016. Eduardo Dolon explained that the work to adapt the enclosure of the Eras de la Sal has been approved by the Local Government and that the works include the implementation of pedestrian broadwalk along the

Presentation of Eduardo Dolon as a candidate for mayor by Keith Nicol

AN OVERFLOWING Salon Bahia Costa saw more than 2,000 people pack the venue to see Torrevieja Mayor Eduardo Dolon be presented as the candidate for mayor at the next Election. The ceremony was attended by the President of the Generalitat Valenciana and PPCV, Alberto Fabra, who came to Torrevieja directly from Madrid where there was a meeting with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. Provincial President of the PP, José Ciscar and numerous high ranking officials of the PP across the province and many local mayors and candidates of the Vega Baja were also present. The event was opened by the provincial deputy and campaign manager of the Partido Popular in Torrevieja, Joaquín Albaladejo, who in an energetic tone, defended the management of the candidate and “personal friend”, Eduardo Dolon in the last four years, during a difficult time that has seen the city trun around its fortunes adding: “Torrevieja is the future of Eduardo Dolon and he deserves the support of citizens.” José Ciscar recalled his early years in politics, when he was presented for the first time as mayor of the municipality, Teulada. Dolon noted that; “I became mayor in the four worst years of the crisis person, but in the next we will continue to make Torrevieja a national and international “reference point.” Císcar Dolon congratulated Eduardo for his work as head of the Provincial Electoral Committee and revealed its policy of renewal is 40% up on what it had been. He lambasted the doomsayers who predicted a privatization of health and education and

said that all school children are in school, and regarding health, annually 365,000 surgeries took place in the Community. He also defended the work of Rajoy as president of the Government, noting that in the last two years he has managed to help Spain pass from recession to recovery. He said it is fair to ask forgiveness for mistakes but said that the only alternative to PP is a tripartite or quadripartite radical left. Eduardo Dolon presented his project under the slogan “Together + Torrevieja”, and noted that this slogan are three basics of it: Together ; in working together and bringing together all of Torrevieja’s citizens, cultures and associations; ‘+’ in that we will always ask for more, more social support, more progress, more public works and more for Torrevieja. President Fabra, recalled that his first act of duty, when he took possession of the Generalitat was attending the Habaneras festival of which he pledged to return for the next edition; also as president of the Region. He stressed the cosmopolitanism of Torrevieja and ratified the words spoken before by Vice President Císcar, to push the project to run an AVE rail link to the airport and its extension to Torrevieja. In this sense said there are solid foundations for this project to come to fruition “because Torrevieja deserves and needs this.” Fabra praised the work and dedication that Dolon had shown to the People of Torrevieja and Valencia and noted that he was a personality who extolled human value, combined with leadership and sensitivity to people and the problems of the city.

Man stabbed in San Luis

A SEVENTY-TWO year old British man was discovered lying in the street suffering from eight stab wounds by a passing bus driver on Tuesday. The man has been admitted to Torrevieja’s Hospital after been found lying in his own pool of blood, at around 11am and remains in serious condition. The Bus Driver was travelling along Avda Barakaldo in the residential urbanization of San Luis when he saw the man bathed in blood on the sidewalk. Apparently a knife was found beside the body. The San Luis resident with the initials of MHB had seven stab wounds on the left side of the chest and one in the abdomen. The incident is under investigation by the Police although it’s still unclear if the stab wounds are self inflicted, as the man has a history of depression, or a third party was involved.

EXPAT VOTERS still have time to have a voice in next month’s General Election in Britain but the deadline to register to vote is fast approaching. by Jack Troughton REGISTRATION MUST be completed by midnight on Monday (20th April) and the UK’s Electoral Commission is urging all eligible British citizens living overseas to take the time to take a few minutes to complete the online process.

The independent commission was set up by Parliament to protect the integrity of voting and maintain public confidence in UK democracy. It is working with a series of partners to promote overseas registration. And it is vital to register for a postal or proxy vote as quickly as possible. A proxy vote entails a trusted person being nominated on behalf of another. There could be as many as 5.5 million British people living abroad and expats previously registered to vote in a UK Parliamentary constituency in the last 15 years may have the right to cast a vote. A new online system was launched in June last year and tens of thousands of expats around the world have logged on to register – in comparison just over 7,000 overseas voter registration forms were downloaded in last year’s European elections to use the previous paper system. Alex Robertson, Director of Communications for the Electoral Commission said: “There is now just a matter of days left until the 20th April deadline, so we are encouraging UK expats to join the many others who have already registered to vote online. It takes just a few minutes and is far easier than the old, paper-based process. “There’s been a great response so far and we don’t want anyone to miss out on having their say on polling day.” To register, go to www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

Georgia Man shoots mother-in-law after bullet bounces off armadillo ARMADILLOS HAVE thick skins, but is it tough enough to deflect a pistol bullet and send it ricocheting towards one’s mother-in-law? Police in Georgia were called to the house of 54year-old Larry McElroy who told officers that his mother-in-law, Carol Johnson, suffered a gunshot wound after a 9mm round he fired at an armadillo bounced off the animal and struck her. Mrs Johnson suffered non life-threatening injuries; the armadillo was killed! Mr McElroy claimed his bullet killed the armadillo, then hit a fence, travelled through the back-door of Mrs Johnson’s mobile home and passed through the reclining chair she was lying in, striking her in the back. Police officers said Mr McElroy was 100 yards away from Mrs Johnson’s home when he fired the shot. Local official James Morgan said the authorities recommended either shooting or trapping armadillos that are creating a nuisance. “Shooting is an effective way of getting rid of them, but you have to be safe when you do that,” He also said “I really think if they’re going to shoot at varmints, maybe use a shotgun with a spread pattern with a lot less range.”

THIS WEEK the Costa Blanca Tourist Board has been meeting with major airlines to promote tourism in the Province. by Keith Nicol ‘ROUTES EUROPE’ is taking place in Scotland with a team from the Costa Blanca showcasing the potential of the impressive and somewhat underused, Alicante-Elche airport. During the week the group held several working meetings with the major companies where they addressed the possibility of new flight routes from Alicante terminal to the whole of Europe. The provincial delegation, headed by José Mancebo, met with representatives of EasyJet, one of the companies with greatest presence in the Alicante-Elche airport with the aim to bolster the number of flights for their next summer campaign with routes to Rome, London, Geneva, Basel, Belfast and Hamburg, among others. They have also considered the possibility of opening a new route connecting the Costa Blanca to the south of France. The Board also met with officials from Jet2. com, targeting potential customers in Leeds, UK. The purpose of this action is to boost sales in the low season and offer travellers to the Costa Blanca new, specific, attractions, such as sports or gastronomy.

Mancebo stressed the importance of participating in this event which is a priority in the calendar of fairs and exhibitions established by the Board. Deputy of Tourism Joaquín Albaladejo explained that in addition to promoting the traditional offers of sun and beach, “we have placed particular emphasis on other options as this is one of the reasons why travellers to our province visit the area for tourism-related conferences, conventions or business. According to official figures, 11% of passengers arriving at our airport do so for work, so we have noticed that this is a very interesting niche market we want to strengthen and increase.” The agency’s director held other meetings with officials of Lufthansa, Norwegian, Wizzair, Europe Airpost, Brussels Airlines, Germanwings, Monarch and S7, to present the Costa Blanca as a quality and versatile destination and focus on opening new potentially interesting routes for these companies and involving, in turn, a significant return of tourists to the province of Alicante.

Drivers caught out by new UK tax rules

THOUSANDS OF UK motorists have been fined and had their cars clamped by the DVLA after unwittingly falling foul of changes to tax rules. New regulations mean a vehicle’s tax is automatically cancelled when it is sold, even if it has an in-date tax disc. Clampings by the DVLA have rocketed since paper vehicle excise duty (VED) discs were phased out last October. Before the changes the DVLA clamped about 5,000 vehicles a month but this has risen to more than 8,000, with motorists finding their cars have been towed away without any warning. Most drivers know that tax discs are no longer required to be displayed in car windows, but many are unaware that VED is cancelled automatically if a car changes ownership, even if there is a valid disc. Now, in the UK, new owners have to tax the car again, and many are being caught out and being left with hefty fines.

Carmens donate to the AECC CARMENS BAR/RESTAURANT, El Chapperal recently donated 760.50€ to the AECC. The money was raised mainly from donations from the funeral of Tony Endacott Weir. Tony was the late husband of Sylvia and father of Caroline who organised the regular Play your Cards Right afternoons held at the bar. Julie Purdy, the owner of the bar, regularly raises money for charity and on this occasion was asked to give the money to a cancer charity. As the AECC is the Spanish charity for the fight against cancer they were delighted to accept the donation.

by Keith Nicol The Plenum of the provincial institution unanimously approved a budget amendment this week to activate a new Extraordinary Investment Plan, worth 24.4 million euros from the surplus, in addition to the 40 million initially budgeted for investments this year. The majority of the investment will go towards financially sustainable public works, roads and paths, energy saving, parks and gardens or water efficiency. All municipalities in the province may, like they did in 2014, be eligible for this grant program. The president of the council of Ali-

cante, Luisa Pastor, noted that 33 million euros, will also go towards the early repayment of debt, which will close the year 2015 with zero deficit. Pastor, who was accompanied by Deputy of Infrastructure, Manuel Pérez Fenoll, stressed; “behind this plan is a priority that is employment, promoting projects that help revitalize the labour market and our municipalities.” Pastor added; “Since last year the Alicante Provincial Council has made a great effort to meet the demands and needs of municipalities and hope that these investments will gener-

LAN Party 2015 COMPUTER GAMING arrived in Torrevieja last weekend as around 500 young people from the Vega Baja, enjoyed a weekend of computer games in the Cecilio Gallego Pavillion. From four o’clock in the afternoon and well into the morning, about five hundred gamers arrived for the LAN Party Games weekend of Technology and PC gaming fun. The Sports Pavilion “Cecilio Gallego” hosted this alternative leisure activity with videogames competing on their different platforms such as game consoles, computers and wireless networks, and attending three lectures. Besides the competition, in which one hundred registered, an area of consoles for free play filled the room and gave this first edition as very festive feeling.

Antiques love affair

TELEVISION’S ANTIQUES expert Mark Stacey has become a familiar face on the Costa Blanca as he generously supports charity fund-raising but collectables remain his first love. by Jack Troughton His interest in history and beautiful objects started as a child in Wales, hunting around the cabinets and cupboards of his grandparents’ hotel but as years pass by his enthusiasm has never waned. “I still love it – there are still things out there to be found! It’s the Del Boy factor...this time next year, I could be a millionaire,” he told RTN. “I absolutely adore the Decorative Arts Movement of 1860 to 1940, it’s my favourite and like most people I love beautiful things. “I think people are interested in antiques because the market is always changing and there is always the chance you can turn up something valuable at a car boot sale.” Mark left Wales to work in the caring profession with mentally

and physically handicapped children and later the elderly but continued to explore antique fairs for treasures. He said he decided to move to Hants to start his own business working in an antiques centre. “I went from looking after old people to looking after old things...I didn’t know how it would work out but I was lucky enough to be a dealer. “I made mistakes and still do, but I got to the stage where I wanted to be bigger and better and the next thing was to be an auctioneer.” Mark went on to work for Bonhams in Hove as a valuer for three years and moved to Sotheby’s for another six years before working in other auction houses. “And after 14 or 15 years I decided to go back to buying and selling old things.”

His break into television came after answering a BBC advert in the Antiques Gazette and was invited for a screen test. “After two weeks I hadn’t heard anything and rang the BBC. They asked which Mark I was because incredibly, they interviewed two Mark Stacey’s on the same day. They asked me to be on ‘Flog It’ the same Sunday and it went from there...the ‘phone hasn’t stopped ringing since.” He said he did not have a favourite antique programme because they all had different formats but elements of the Antiques Road Trip – where two experts are thrown against each other while travelling the country in a classic car – was “competitive and fun and the cars are really good.”

The celebrity version was also enjoyable, enabling him to meet a string of “wonderful people”. “Christopher Biggins was a real hoot; it was more like ‘The Carry On Road Trip”. He said all profits from the road trip went to charity and the experts really did have to haggle. “There are no deals done beforehand but the cameras are there...you hope people warm to you. “Then you get to the auction where you are sometimes gutted at the price things go for, but it is enter-

tainment and I know that no dealer has yet been hurt in the making of the programme.” He first came to Spain and visited Javea 18 months ago, invited to make a guest appearance as an antiques valuer and has continued to return to back charity projects organised by Sue Nutbrown, who with husband Chris have become firm friends. “I have fallen in love with Javea and love coming to Spain...I am just very lucky the BBC has not yet found out I don’t really know anything!”

LA SIESTA Evangelical Church can boast a small keen Brass Instrumental Group who occasionally perform at church services and other functions. They are trained by Joe Wallace a former Royal Air Force bandmaster and retired music teacher. The Norwegian Church, neighbours of the Evangelical Church, had a brass band but this had ceased to function. In order to ensure that these instruments were still used for church purposes the Norwegian church kindly donated them to La Siesta Evangelical Church. A small number were put to good use by a handful of members – even some beginners among the adults who form the group. There being far too many instruments for local use, a decision was made to find another church home for the surplus. At this point an opportunity arose, as it was learned that a group of 35 young folk attending a Salvation Army church in Valdermoro, near Madrid, were struggling to share a small number of instruments to form a band. Arrangements were made for 19 instruments to be handed over to the Salvation Army officers at Valdermoro. Chas Smith, a former Salvation Army cornetist in the U.K. and now choir director at La Siesta Evangelical Church went along with the instruments and held a workshop. They are hopeful of becoming proficient enough to form a band and maybe, before long, visit La Siesta Evangelical Church with these instruments and perform locally. When this comes to pass, the instruments with their new owners will be visiting their original home in the hands of the next generation of church brass musicians. Mission Completed.

I FELT I should report to other holiday makers what happened to me in Benidorm. My wife and I had a fantastic time in Benidorm until the last day when I was pick pocketed. I had been really careful all week and had no problems, then on the last day, me and the wife decided to go for lunch in a cafe bar across the street from our hotel. The bar was empty with just one other guy in there. After the meal I paid the lady at the till and put my wallet back in my trouser pocket. The lady kept me talking. When I think back I believe I was scammed. She seemed to be looking over my shoulder and the only other guy in there squeezed past me. When we left I noticed pretty much straight away that my wallet was missing and went straight back to confront the man. The lady behind the till and the manager said they had seen me give my wallet to my wife who had put it in her bag. My wife never even took a bag! As my pocket was zipped there was no way it could have fallen out. I said I would be back with the police. I asked the manager if he knew the man and he said he was a total stranger even though they had all been pretty friendly with him. I am sure they were all working together but just cannot prove it. Please be careful with your belongings, but don’t be put off.

Residencia letter THE REPLY from Mrs Ellen Rose stated very clearly that this is not the document we used to carry with our photo on called the “Residencia”. The Green Registration Card that is now issued replacing the Green Registration Paper is not a form of identification and does not need to be carried at all. Your SIP card displays your NIE No. on the front and you should normally be carrying this anyway. Our driving license or passport are at the moment our only form of ID. However, you may be exempt from Spanish registration tax by getting Spanish number plates within one month of entering the country. But to do this, you need to become a resident. With many years of experience writing, performing and producing original material Rae has played in venues all over the UK. Oklahoma will be Rae’s first experience treading the boards in musical theatre and he is relishing the challenge this new venture brings. Headlining alongside Rae, also in her first principal roll as ‘Laurey’ will be 17 year-old Verity Jo Spencer Hall. Verity is looking forward to this new challenge and with the expert guidance of Show Director Susan Wilson and support of the more experienced members of the cast is confident of meeting the expectations of the role. GENEROUS EU grants are currently available for people investing in solar power and other forms of renewable energy in Spain. by Jack Troughton Solar thermal installation expert Peter Spahn is a member of Solarverein Trier, a German-based charitable association, and helps people apply for subsidies. He said both residents and non-residents could apply for the money – representing up to 45% of the cost of installing units – and it was part of a seven year programme launched last year by Europe to increase Spain’s use of renewables. “Spain is still using a large amount of fossil fuel energy and renewable are only around 6.5%, although their use has increased in the last few years by using wind farms and other sources of renewable,” he said. “Spain needs a bit more time. However, it is very interesting because 1,700 kilowatts of energy per square metre are available, that’s equivalent to 170 litres of diesel. “The heating potential of 1 litre of diesel is 10kw hours. So the sun provides an enormous amount of energy and it is up to us to take it or leave it.” He said there were different forms of solar power collectors and they harnessed the “huge potential” of the sun to heat hot water or provide central heating. SAVE The perfect time to install solar thermal units was when a new house was built and IVA taxed on the purchase of a solar plant was 10% - potentially saving a lot of money. “People are fed up with paying more and more for electricity, gas and oil,” he said, adding that since 2006 building regulations on new homes made it compulsory to include a solar domestic hot water system.

by Patricia Thompson ACTORS BILLIE Anthony Gaddess and Julie Kay, who are currently putting the finishing touches to the first ever crowd funded feature film to be made on the Costa Blanca, “The Cucaracha Club” recently teamed up with two big names from an Irish TV Soap, called Ros na Run, a Gaelic speaking show that has been running for many years now. Robbie Gallagher and Mike Kelly, have been TV actors for many years and have many movie credits to their names. Gangs of New York, Joan of Ark, Dark Age, Brush Strokes, are among the film credits and Benidorm, Ros na Run (TG4), Raisai na Gaillime (TG4) and the TG4 detective series, Corp Agus Anam, in the TV cred-

its. Plans are afoot for the second Cucaracha Club story with the option of making a 6 to 8 part TV Drama of the plot line. The genial Irishmen, may find themselves as integral members of the forthcoming cast to play bad boys opposite Julie and Billie. It is hoped that the International cast will include more big name actors as locations in Europe and the USA are sought for a much more ambitious feature length film. Meanwhile Robbie may join up with a few members of the film cast in the next ADHOC production later this year, putting his director’s hat on, with a very famous stage play.

Tom Watt has been invited to return in his role with an ambitious plot line and special effects. Music for the next production is already being composed in keeping with the concept of a low budget production with its own full originalmusic score. The current production has this in place and it is very unusual to have a full music score, let alone such a high quality amount of music available. The Theme song sung by Chloe Leigh called “The Cucaracha Club” is currently being requested on local radio and international stations,and has had well over 3000 hits on You Tube. Open Day Success despite the weather

CONTRARY TO popular belief it is not always sunny and warm in Spain and the weather clearly demonstrated this on April 9th, which was cloudy and cold with very strong winds. Despite this, the Sailing Association Mar Menor (SAMM) Open Day proved extremely popular with over 70 visitors, English, Irish and German. They came from as far afield as Totana, Mazarron and Catral, all about an hour’s drive away; arriving at CTD in Los Narejos to find out about SAMM’s sailing activities, talk to the club members and see their boats. Among them were experienced, but lapsed, sailors, keen to take up the sport again, complete novices wanting to ‘test the waters’ and a young girl on holiday with her grandparents. Unfortunately the strong winds prevented some boats being moored on the jetty, so the visitors could only be shown photographs and nobody could be given a trial sail. Everybody left their contact details and will be personally invited for a trial sail when the weather improves. A further Open Day is planned for the autumn. Rockin’ In The Aisles For Alzheimers

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL night at El Alto La Dolores Restaurant in Guardamar, raised funds for The Alzheimers Association (AFA) from ticket sales and a raffle, which came to 575.60€. Woody & The Peckers literally had diners jiving and strolling in the aisles, as well as the dance floor. Matilda Sanchez, President of AFA, told how their Government funding is never enough for their needs. Apart from trained professionals, all their staff are volunteers, who do not even claim expenses. They work hard to make life more comfortable for sufferers and their families, so they desperately need funds to help them achieve their aims. El Alto La Dolores Restaurant will be hosting their next fund-raising event on Saturday 2nd May. This will be an afternoon BBQ, with entertainment from Ronnie Taylor aka Justin Sane, with a guest appearance by Vinny Mack. This event aims to raise much needed funds for Elche Children’s Home. A glimpse of Military History THE THIRD Torrevieja Exhibition of Military Modelling opened its doors on Sunday at the Vista Alegra Exhibition Centre and remains open until 1st May. by Keith Nicol This year the exhibition celebrates the “Centenary of Underwater Weapons”; the “50th Anniversary of Air Squadron parachutist sappers” and “Military Historical Museum of Cartagena”. The opening ceremony was attended by the Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, accompanied by the Deputy Provincial Tourism, Joaquín Albaladejo, Councillor for Culture, Luis María Pizana, the Salt Queens and several councillors along with Military dignitaries and members of the former British and Spanish Armed Forces Associations. The opening ceremony was also attended by Captain Jose Sierra Méndez, commander of the Spanish Submarine Fleet; Vilchez Julián Fernández, deputy Chief of Sappers of the Parachute Squadron of the Air Force; Captain Juan Antonio Martínez Sánchez, director of the Military History Museum in Cartagena; Sergio Gómez Sivent, Director of Marjal Costa and Rafael García Rodríguez, President of the Association of Naval Modelling of Torrevieja. Prior to the opening ceremony a ‘mock battle’ took place outside the entrance to the exhibition, with a short

recreation of urban combat given by the local Air Soft associations, “Aguilas Armadas de Elche”, “Fox Hound” y “Ghost Buldog Team” with the latter coming from Torrevieja. The Mayor opened the exhibition after the delivery of certificates to contributors of this magnificent exhibition. The exhibition also has the participation of the Association of Battle Tanks “La Cadena Herrumbrosa” and a formidable collection of models from the Association of Spanish Military Modelling of Torrevieja, featuring Air Force jets, helicopters and Spanish Army Vehicles. The exhibition has more than 500 pieces on display including 170 models and dioramas on display including tanks, planes, helicopters, Legion, Spanish army, WWII, Spanish Civil War, a large collection of guns and miniature vehicles of various Spanish police units. Also of note is the striking collection of Army uniforms, donated by the local police in Totana. The musical group Senienca (AMS) is the organizer of the edition of the event. This event, which is unique in Catalonia celebrated its ninth edition with the event bringing together a total of four bands, three of them from

Valencia: the Musical Society Fortaleny (Valencia), the Unión Musical Torrevejense (Alicante) and Musical Society Alliance Campello (Alicante), along with the Band of Alcazar de San Juan (Ciudad Real). The Unión Musical Torrevejense started the event by taking second place in the ‘paso doble’ in front of an esteemed jury consisting of: Franco Cesarini (Switzerland), Lorenzo Pusceddu (Italy) and Gregorio Casasempere

(Spain). Some members of the jury gave UMT maximum points for their technical and interpretive aspects of the performance. Overall, the Results of IX International Contest of Bands “Vila de la Sénia ‘2015 saw the 1st Prize and Special Prize with 301 points going to Musical Union Torrevieja Torrevieja (Alicante), followed by Alcázar de San Juan (Ciudad Real), Musical Society of l’Aliança Campello (Alicante) and Musical Society Fortaleny (Valencia) in fourth.

Costa Cobras RFC moving forward COSTA COBRAS RFC, the region’s newest Rugby Club are gradually gaining momentum with more new players joining the team. As numbers increase in all ages they are steadily getting to the goal of having a 7’s team at all levels, from U10’s through to senior level and hope to soon start looking forward to start playing friendly matches in the near future. They train at the Daya Vieja sports ground on Monday and Wednesday from 6pm to 7.30pm for the juniors, while the seniors will be training from 8pm to 9.30pm. The organisers wished to say thanks to the Portobello ladies for their work with the casino, the raffle ticket sellers and to all the kind folk for their donations for the raffle prizes, to Brian Jenkins and his wife Jean, who gave their services free of charge and supplied three hours of music, with many compliments on the performance from both men and women with requests for more country music to be done in the area. A lovely hamper was put together by Eddie and his wife from donations received. 646.40€ was the total raised on the night with other donations from members of the quiz on Monday night boosting the total to 670€. Then a generous donation of 20€ euros was received that brought it to €690, and one gentle-

John and his wife Sue ran the Dance Ranch line dancing troupe who hold regular classes at the Club. John will be sadly missed by his friends, family and pupils and will be remembered for his patience, kindness and the love he had for everyone. The money was raised at John’s funeral, the raffle and donations on the day.

THE ASSOCIATION of Neighbours ‘San Miguel Arcangel’, who administers the village’s food bank, said a huge thank you to HELP Association Vega Baja. Last week they donated 538 litres of milk, 66 units of baby food and hygiene products to the food bank of San Miguel de Salinas. The Association said “These items are amongst the most important of all basic foods and they we are only able to provide for the needy through the generosity and continued support of HELP as well as local residents. HELP and the local community have rallied support of needy families throughout the crisis.” The Neighbours Association added; “It is an example of how human solidarity overcomes the barriers of language and diverse cultures.”

AFTER THE success of Easter’s Torrevieja Cup, Scandinavian Football teams arrived to train over Easter with the Swedish Football Club OSK having their first visit to Torrevieja Sports City. They were joined by SNØGG football club, from the city of Notodden, located southeast of Oslo. The Norwegian club brought their women’s team, who play in Norway’s Second Division. Both teams had several daily workouts to perfect technique, tactics and fitness. This was the first time that two teams have spent a week in Torrevieja using its facilities for various daily workouts with the OSK Football Club playing several friendly matches against teams form the Torrevieja Municipal Football school. The Swedish Club announced that they will soon return to Torrevieja to enjoy a campus club with their other teams.

by Susan Ward The Sunshine league was the creation of Bob Hornsey who very sadly and suddenly died on 11th March 2015. Bob was 65 years old and since his move to Spain had been associated - indeed the instigator - of many local clubs including San Miguel Tigers, Dominoes, Florentilles, Laguna Vista, Los Balcones and Pumas. Bob had also been President and Secretary of Las Salinas Petanca League. But undoubtedly his biggest achievement was the setting up of the Sunshine Radio International Petanca League. This does not happen overnight and took him over a year to put together. The league had the backing of Sunshine Radio and in particular their presenter Simon Morton. Teams were eager to join because of Bob who promised a fun and friendly league. He was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and well liked, so the league took off. April 2nd was the 1st presentation party of the league and Bob would have thoroughly enjoyed it as it had an atmosphere that he so used to revel in. Simon Morton gave a heartfelt speech about Bob before presenting the trophies and medals, with the help of Jacqueline Lopez, to the winners. Winners Division A Division B

Don’t just put flowers in vases, eat them too! I HAVE had a garden since the age of five, that means that for seventy three years I should have been eating mostly home grown ecological food for every meal every day of the year. But like many poor school food, poor cooking by a busy mother, snacks on the run during a busy business live diverted me at times from maximising eating the free health foods from the garden. And helping my father in his bakery, when around ten years old, crystallise violet flowers for decorating cakes was in hindsight not the healthiest produce to add to already heavily laden iced cakes. When I retired in 1994 following two cancer operations I followed the surgeons advice of eating a healthy Mediterranean diet rather than experiencing a debilitating programme of radio and chemotherapy. Fortunately our holiday home was in a then self sufficient valley that ate and exported fresh produce daily and the older folks still gathered bunches and wicker baskets of wild herbs and flowers for culinary and medicinal purposes. For decades we had eaten Globe artichokes the flower bud of the plant and when harvesting nasturtium leaves to add zest to salads we added a few flowers for decoration and their subtle taste. Likewise rose pettles were added to salads and breakfast infusions and elderflowers were used to make a home made wine in the kitchen. Then we started to make Kombucha and added elder rosemary and thyme flowers to add interesting and beneficial tastes. When we walked the local mountains we chewed the flowering tips of rosemary stems for the energy giving oil and romanesque and cauliflowers were often eaten as vegetables. Then within five years of living full time in Spain the

village and valley lost its self sufficiency as families moved off the land to work in the construction industry in the mad Spanish bank destroying boom. So we started to grow all we could ourselves to the state of being self sufficient in vegetables, herbs, fruit, meat and beneficial edible flowers. In 2002 we visited Cuba for a month. Not to visit tourist resorts but to wander around the countryside to study the green revolution of communal allotments outside every town, village, school and factory. One day we visited the research department of the Havana Botanic Garden and were invited to lunch by the Director. Asked what we would like to eat we said give a garden speciality. This turned out to be a brightly coloured hibiscus salad and we learned that the flowers were a relaxant, cooled one down and helped to control ones blood pressure. Returning home we researched what other beneficial flowers we already had in our garden and what others we should perhaps start to grow. The list actively included in our diet soon grew. The following dozen are extracted from the list of forty flowers and the reasons why in ‘Living well from our garden Mediterranean style’. They , and the other flowers already mentioned can all be grown in and around a vegetable garden and within the flower garden. Chive flowers while still fresh to add interest to salads and their anti oxidant properties. Begonia flowers can help keep livers healthy by aiding toxin elimination. Brocolli flowers for their vitamin and folic acid content. Borage flowers to add to cider or cold herb infusions.

Courgettes flowers for stuffing to steam or bake. Day lilies, going in our salad tonight, are good for ones hair and nails. Marigold petals are an interesting addition to salads and as an infusion they are said to be good for one’s skin. Orange and lemon flowers to add an interesting taste and perfume Passion flower to salads and infusions can be infusiuons. relaxing Passion flower infusions can be relaxing. Rocket flowers as well as leaves add a spiciness to salads. Sunflower seeds can be dried and chewed as a snack. Viola flowers can relieve as an infusion hay fever and allergies. Violets were as infusions a traditional relief for varicose veins. Hope that these thoughts add to a new interest in what you grow. But do not spray flowers that you intend to eat with chemical insecticides.

Interest rates unlikely to rise

ACCORDING TO top economists interest rates in the UK, Europe are unlikely to rise until 2017 and more controversially rates in the US are now not expected to rise until 2016. THE UK is inflation has held steady at a record-low 0% , Inflation has not been this weak since at least 1989, when comparable data began. The ONS said that a rough estimate based on other figures suggested inflation was the weakest since isolated price falls in 1959 and 1960. This leaves inflation well below the Bank of England´s 2% target and the headline measure calculated to one decimal point is expected to dip below zero. This means that the Bank of England is under no pressure to raise interest rates. But for now few economists think Britain is at risk of the Japanese-style entrenched price falls i.e. deflation that have threatened the euro zone. The eurozone’s woes are likely to be a key drag on the UK economy, the European Central Bank has started quantitative easing and anxiety about a Grexit continues. It’s not all bad news though, with the Euro being so weak it means expats living off a Sterling income have benefited and the Euro

may well get even weaker against Sterling and we could even see an exchange rate of 1.40 or even 1.45 in the next few months. But back to savers, what you may be asking yourself can you do to make a little extra from your money, well firstly if you are over 65 years old I would recommend you look at investing in the pensioner bonds being offered by the UK government until May 15th 2015. The 1 year bond pays 2.24% after basic rate tax, this is automatically deducted when the interest is paid (2.8 % before) and the 3 year bond pays 3.2 % after tax (4% before). All interest is paid at maturity and the maximum investment is £10,000 per person over 65 years old in each bond. But what if you are under 65 or are over 65 but need more than £20,000 of your money to work for you. Well it’s no good looking to the banks, the launch of high-paying Pensioner Bonds has led to banks cutting more than 100 rates in 21 days, according to Money Mail . Big names including Lloyds Bank, Royal Bank of Scotland, Halifax, the Post Office and

Skipton Building Society are among those to hack back interest on High Street accounts, cash Isas and even deals for children. In some cases, interest rates have been slashed in half. Getting back money lost investing in Bankia’s shares. Part II. AS MENTIONED in previous articles, our law firm is helping many consumers who lost their savings in the purchase of Bankia’s shares, and we are continuously receiving enqueries regarding this subject. ALMOST EVERY day new judgments are granted by the Spanish courts in favor of consumers, to name just a few: the courts of Mataro, Catalonia, Community of Valencia, City of Valencia, the Valencian Provincial Court, the Provincial Courts of Avila and Burgos, courts of the cities of Oviedo, Logroño, Madrid, Alcala de Henares, etc. We think that it is clear that consumers bought shares of Bankia based on misinformation provided to them by the bank, from its IPO in 2011, until May 2012, when the real economic and financial situation of the bank was known. So, Bankia gave the image of being a large, healthy and solvent bank, when in fact, as came to light later, the real situation was very different from that advertised and reflected in their prospectus, publicity, etc. To assist consumers in this situation, our firm offers to waive our own fees for clients in a “no win no fees” deal, meaning that only if the case is won would we charge our legal fees as per the Law Society, and if not, the only expense our office would need to charge would be a small provision to cover necessary unavoidable administrative expenses. We left Calpe, where we were warmly greeted by our hostess, Ramona, and were soon heading towards Madrid where we arrived in plenty of time to check in and explore all the attractions within easy walking distance. The Hotel Puerto de Toledo had clean, pleasant and comfortable rooms with free Wifi throughout. Within five minutes of arrival, we had our key, as Gandia Tours had prechecked everybody in. On Friday evening, we set off for the musical production of ‘Priscilla – Queen of the Desert’. We were impressed after realising that we didn’t have the cheapest seats in the theatre,

but the best! It was fantastic, with the audience singing and dancing to this wonderful production. Our driver was patiently waiting as we left with feather boas and full of song! The customer service from Gandia Tours was exceptional. Ramona, our guide, was at the hotel entrance making sure we had all returned safely at 1am in the morning! Next morning, we had a huge buffet breakfast, with food to suit all tastes, from a full English to cheeses, meats and cereals. Ramona greeted everybody, and answered any questions about our stay, with wonderful knowledge of what to do and see. We had a free day, so decided to catch the Madrid City Tour Bus. For 10€ for pensioners, and 21€ for under sixtyfives, we could hop on and off two different tour routes on an open top bus. The ticket lasted twenty four hours, more than

enough time to see every sight possible (twice, in our case!). The major attractions include the Royal Palace, Plaza Mayor, Retiro Park and Gran Via. We had a free evening, so sampled some of the amazing tapas on offer, every tapas bar buzzing with loud chatter and animated conversations . Sunday morning, Ramona suggested we visit the Rastro, just 200 metres from the Hotel. Madrid’s Rastro is absolutely enormous making; this a very pleasant and relaxing Sunday morning. Back at the hotel we had a coffee on the terrace while we waited for our departure. We left Madrid with fantastic memories of a wonderful weekend. Gandia Tours are to be applauded for their customer service, staff, organisation and professionalism. It was a fantastic short break, and we will be booking another!

Asian elephants, leopards, sloth bears buffaloes, as well as offering home to some species on the brink of extinction due to habitat loss. In the surrounding waters, you can see blue whales, sperm whales and dolphins and in the skies, over 400 species of birds, many of which have developed distinctively from their Indian cousins. Sri Lanka has a reputation for health and well being, attracting a large number of visitors each year, with spa and health retreats offering meditation for the soul and the native healing system, Ayurdeva. Built on the basis of diet and herbs, this was the country´s only treatment method until the introduction of Western Medicine in the relatively recent 19th Century. IT’S MANY a haircut since I´ve done any serious Cowell bashing, but I found the tale of David Walliams winning an NTA award last week totally irresistible. Chances are you already know a bit about this story, but when I read Simon´s outrageous comments and outlandish jealousy fuelled remarks, I decided this sorry tale had to be part of this week’s column. Simon Cowell has always carefully selected his fellow judges so that when push comes to shove in the ego area he can always ´be the man,´ stooping to the ugliest of statements an example of how low he is prepared to go ... Preamble complete, now to this latest debacle! David Walliams decided to ask his Twitter followers to vote for him to win some innocuous Best TV Judge award, and that they did, and he said about Cowell not winning it “He couldn’t beat me, and he wasn’t happy! He’s got ten million Twitter followers but he still couldn’t get them to vote for him, he´s genuinely upset about it!” Meanwhile at the Cowell camp Simon said “He just seems to be getting bigger and bigger and his ego is getting bigger, he is literally uncontrollable.” He said this as Walliams pulled a sneaky and asked ´his friend´ Simon to accept the award on his behalf to which Simon said “accepting the award on David’s behalf was actually the ´most awful moment´ of my career, I literally got a knot in my stomach,” aah bless! David closed out this school playground catfight when he said “The irony for me is that being a judge is just one of the things I do, I act, do comedy, write books … with Simon, it’s actually all he does.” Ironic it certainly is David! SPITTING IMAGE began in 1984 and ran for 18 series and won copious amounts of awards for its biting satirical humour and mocking style of comedy. A new show called ´Newzoids´ started on Wednesday on ITV and although it follows similar lines to Spitting Image is quite different. Writer on both shows Giles Pilbrow said “our main mission is to amuse people.” That’s Wednesday nights at 10pm sorted.

We have noticed that my sister, who has children, has been given preferential treatment by my parents, whilst we have been all but ostracized. We also received a lot of pressure from my parents, over the years, to have children. And I am certain my parents unfairly blame my wife for our decision. These days, a lot of couples are choosing not to have children. It is simply a lifestyle choice, that is no one else’s business, and a matter solely for those making the decision. If you feel you need to explain to your parents, that this has been a joint decision, then do so. But if they are still treating you differently to your sister, simply because she has given them grandchildren, then their unfair behaviour should also be pointed out to them.

Daughter despair Despite telling my daughter that she was not to have a tattoo, she has gone ahead and had one done of her favourite band, carried out by someone who is not legally registered. She is 16, and knows my dislike of tattoos, and I feel she has done it just to spite me. Her father and I have been having problems with her rebelling, for some time now. She wasn’t always like this. The problem with tattoos is that they are so permanent. I would say, it is probably a phase she is going through. Teenagers, especially, will try and push parental boundaries. The more something is forbidden, the more attractive it is to them. I would say back off and leave her to her own devices, whatever fad she leans towards, it’s not going to last. Choices made when people are young, will be a far cry from what they want when they are 40. She won’t still be wanting a Tattoo of One Direction then, will she? Tattoos can be removed. DEAR AUNTY, My MacAfee Security has just run out on my 12 month old Windows 8.1 Laptop. I’m in a quandary as to whether to renew it. I am a basic retired light user, and it is expensive to renew. My friends tell me that Windows has sufficient built in security. I’m unsure about how safe the “freebies” are, and if I did use one, would I have to close down Windows Security? Hope you can help. Tom. Aunty says: Windows has some security, but not a built in Antivirus, unless you install it and turn it on. It is called Microsoft Security Essentials. Most of the “freebies” - Avast, MSE, AVG - offer sufficient security and work fine with W8. And most work in conjunction with the W8 security. You will only notice a drop in performance if you run multiple Antivirus and Malwares at the same time. The drop in performance comes from all these programs scanning files in use all that the same time. Response: Many thanks for that, Aunty.

Dropbox removal

HI AUNTY Can you help me? When I open my lap top it seems to configure too many times before I can get onto my computer sites, and then DROPBOX comes on the screen which I don’t want - but it goes off when I delete it, returning next time I open my lap top. Appreciate it if you can help - many thanks, Hazel Aunty says: It sounds like you, or a program you have installed, has also installed DROPBOX onto your PC. Some programs do this when you install things using the default install settings, and install all sorts of things you may not want... So the easiest way to remove it is go to your programs list, and uninstall it.

Aunty says: Most tablets and iPhones are unlikely to get viruses as most of the apps you download will be checked before they are made available on apps stores. The apps are what’s called ‘Sandbox’, which means that they don’t have permission to access the system files of the phone. So the phone is not going to get a virus, unless you install an app from an ‘unofficial’ source. However, if you want an antivirus system, simply look in the apps store for one that you want. STAGESTRUCK ARE hitting the boards again, this time under a brand new Director. by Keith Nicol

LOCAL PERFORMANCE group Stagestruck meets twice weekly at Casa Ventura and rehearsals are in full swing for their Spring show “An Evening with Stagestruck” . Under the new directorship of Leigh Humphries the group are enjoying rehearsals and are looking forward to opening night. Leigh has a very strong C.V to carry the group forward. In her early years her mum enrolled her into Peggy O’Farrel’s stage school in East Ham. There she did stage work, filming and modelling. Leigh loved it and worked her socks off. Through hard work she made it to the London Palladium where she performed in a number of pantos with some very famous faces, including Jimmy Tarbuck, Terry Scott, Ronnie Corbett and Clive Dunn, who she danced with to his hit song Grandad. Her most unusual claim to fame is that she was one of Ken Dodds “Diddymen “ she wore a hooped costume, that made her very round and she took the part of “Mick the Marmaliser” she can still remember the little ditty she had to sing to this day. Since coming to Spain two-years

ago Leigh decided she would like to join another theatre group. She came to a Stagestruck performance and knew that this was the group for her. She auditioned in February 2014 and has had parts in “Ancient Grease” and “The Panto Pensioners save Christmas”. When director Stella Readon suddenly said she had to return to UK, the whole Stagestruck group was devastated. A meeting was called and a unanimous decision was made to carry on with Leigh taking the part of Director. Stella

is still in contact with the group and writing a new script based on the story of Sleeping Beauty just in time for Christmas but currently the group are getting ready to perform their Spring show at the Cardenal Beluga Theatre on May 7th, 8th and 9th. All money raised goes towards local charities. Tickets are on sale now priced at only 6€ including a free drink on arrival at the theatre. The Orihuela Costa Male Voice Choir April Tour THE ORIHUELA Costa Male Voice Choir has just completed a highly successful three concert tour to Albir and Alfaz de Pi where they thrilled audiences with the excellence and vitality of their singing. Conducted by their internationally famous musical director Nigel Hopkins the choir sang a selection of well-loved songs. Venues ranged from the Residencia Anneke, the Forum Mare Nostrum to the Fundacio FRAX where the choir received a standing ovation. During Nigel’s visits, choirs have raised considerable funds for the Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer and this tour has raised well in excess of 2,000€ to the delight of Pamela Dawson Tasker who co-ordinated the venues for the tour. The choir has many more exciting events planned with two joint concerts with the original Chivenor Branch of the Military Wives Choir, made famous by Gareth Malone on the BBC at the Ecumenical Church, La Zenia, on Saturday 25th April. The choir will then be hosting a visit by the Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir on 31st May when they will be performing a joint concert at La Zenia Church. Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

Direct Object Pronouns cont’d... WE ARE moving forward with our explanation of “direct object pronouns”, so let’s take as our starting point the sentence we looked at last week: “El niño lee el libro” - The boy reads the book “El niño lo lee” - “The boy reads it” This sentence demonstrates what we have learnt so far. That is that a direct object pronoun replaces the direct object (the thing that directly receives the action of a verb). In other words, in English “it” replaces “the book”. We also saw that in Spanish, the equivalent of it goes in front of a verb. There are in fact three instances when the direct object pronoun can be linked to the end of a verb itself, but we will look at those later. In English we have several direct object pronouns and here they are: me us you him, her, it them We need to be clear in our minds that we are talking about object pronouns specifically here, because two of them

are also used in English as subject pronouns (you and it) and one of them doubles up as a possessive adjective (her). If you didn’t understand that last sentence don’t worry too much, just remember that some of these words can have other uses. We tend to complain when Spanish words have duplicate uses and meanings, but in fact English is just as bad, it’s just that we don’t have to think about it so we don’t usually realise. We can illustrate the use of these words in English with the verb “love”. For example “I love you” (“I” is the subject pronoun, and “you” is the object pronoun). “You love me” (“You” is the subject pronoun, “me” is the object pronoun). From this example you can see that the word “you” has two uses, as subject and object, whereas “I” has to change to “me” when used as an object. You can go through all the different permutations yourselves to see how all of these words work, so I won’t clog up the rest of this article with examples. You may find it has the added benefit of making you feel all nice and loved. So, I hear you ask, how do we do all

They have decided on Humpty Dumpty as this is an unusual pantomime but just as hilarious as any other with a Dame, a Villain, comic duo, Princess, King and Queen and also includes many other nursery rhyme characters. Breastfeeding can lead to Increased I.Q but most mothers give up – WHY? FOR SEVERAL years a link has been noted between breastfeeding and increased I.Q. but now more evidence is being put forward. A study of nearly 14,000 children by McGill University in Canada has found a positive link to breastfed babies performing better in I.Q. tests by the age of 6yrs. Those who breastfed exclusively for the first three months - with many also continuing to 12 months - scored an average of 5.9 points higher on IQ tests in childhood. Teachers also rated these children significantly higher academically than control children in both reading and writing. Fatty acids in breast milk are thought to boost intelligence, but it seems the physical and emotional aspect of breastfeeding may lead to permanent changes to brain development. Despite yet another advantage of breastfeeding, and the U.K. government recommendation that mothers breastfeed exclusively for the first six months, research shows that whilst three quarters start off breastfeeding, just one in four

is still breastfeeding by six months. Successful breastfeeding is not easy! It requires 100% commitment from the mother, her partner, and health care providers. There are definite ‘secrets of success’ and your midwife will ensure you start correctly from day one. Also, psychological preparation is a must, especially for partners. Unfortunately advice given by some health-care professionals is not always good. I hear mothers being told to ‘top up’ with formula – NO! It always hurts at first – NO! Clearly the lactation cycle is not understood by many health care professionals. Recently I learned of wrong advice where a new mother started to produce colostrum but a professional in a local hospital mistook this for pus and advised her to stop feeding. This disastrous mistake destroyed this mothers plan to breastfeed. So it is important for expectant mothers and their partners to get the right advice from an experienced, trusted midwife. Women, with the correct knowledge, will be able to identify which advice is actually correct and beneficial, and which is best ignored!

The long goodbye

THAT FINAL departure from this Earth is often something people fear. When the process starts to work, as it always seems to do, and do very well, there is no pain and suffering; just an elated feeling that the longest and most difficult journey of our life is in motion, and there is no way of stopping it. Very often with a client I am shown the death scene of a dear departed one. They link back to Earth in the recollection because for them it was their very last and final Earthly act. Unless it is needed to prove a new pain free existence or has some particular relevance I am inclined not to put my client through the unnecessary trauma of re living it, greatly preferring that some other happy event is the bringer of the evidence of soul survival. I get so many letters that are laced with fear and doubt that focus on the regret that a loved one died peacefully alone or in their sleep, and as such there was no final focus, no witnessing of the finality of that last breath. Would you want that? Really? I have absolutely no qualms about passing, it will eventually happen to me, but first I do have to focus on what is left of my life. Thankfully to the depths of my spiritual soul I can say that the biggest truth is that death isn’t the end of life, it is very much the beginning of something rather wonderful, something new. Throughout life we have been governed by experiences, some happy and some sad, and some so profound that they had the effect of changing our lives. So too will life in the Spirit World be anything more than we would wish it to be for ourselves. When the time comes we will make our transition and hopefully leave behind a legacy of all we have achieved because it is that memory of us that it so perfect to accept as a full and righteous testimony of a life lived. Somethings are not made clear to us in this World, and yet they will become very transparent when we survive on the other side of the fence. It is always important here to explain that the pathway to Spirit is also the pathway of return, back to Earth. Loved ones thrive when they can rest in happiness because all that they have left behind is going

well. They feel our sorrow and they monitor our respect, and then they do the obvious when they engage in the happiness of our continuity here on Earth in the knowledge that they have safely reached the place they have to be in. Many worried souls do not automatically take their rightful place in the Spirit World; and the number one reason for this is that they are too concerned with what they left behind. Sometimes it is the things they did, and sometimes it can be the things that they didn’t do that become the chief focus, until they are adequately counselled not to regret, because this unleashes a bitterness or a fear of failure, or a trauma. We don’t want or need to have to cope with anything like that, do we? Whenever I am accused of disturbing the dead, as I have been for the past fifty years or so, I have an instant reply, because if the message is picked up it is the wish of Spirit that they are disturbed. Rather then disturbance there comes along instead a focus which highlights survival and can start that great process of two way communication all those in Spirit long for. The less fear created on Earth the smoother is the transition into the Spirit World and the easier it will be to come to terms with things for both the living and the dead, who combine together to support the afterlife and all it can bring. I often feel sorry for those in Spirit who have nobody to connect with. Some families exclude the rights that the deceased have to make a contact with Earth because of their fear, or by adhering to heresay or nonsense. Rights are rights and dignity must be preserved at all costs, not tossed aside. However there are many who scoffed during their life here on Earth, those who did not believe in the spiritual continuity of the soul who have found out the great truth, have survived in Spirit, and need now to tell someone about the process. Sharing their rightful newly converted and everlasting life with those they love here on Earth, they certainly didn’t want to ever leave; but being spiritual means having faith, and you will never, ever have to say that final convoluted, long, goodbye!

Death scenes are pretty tragic and it would seem that your Mother was encountering somebody who was helping her understand the process. The Masters has produced a number of great headlines and stories. SO WHAT would be the one outstanding story to emerge from the first golf major of the year? By Tony Myles THE RISE of Jordan? The return of the Tiger? The record shattering scores? For me the story of the Masters is “The integrity of James Hahn.” In popular sports feigning injury is now an accepted and expected activity. Using tactics to disadvantage your opponent are commonplace. The exception is Golf. In golf there is no honour in winning unless it has been achieved with meticulous honesty and that is why I would hail the real hero of the Masters as James Hahn. On the first green he declared that his ball had moved and therefore he should be penalised by one shot. The fact is that the ball moved by one dimple and had he said nothing, no one would have noticed. His reward for his honesty was a score of 3 over par and just one too many to enable him to make the cut. In his words “Missed cut by 1. Sometimes you don’t get rewarded for doing the right thing, but it

doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do the right thing.” Campbell and I have argued often about the fact that some of Golf’s rules appear absurd but whilst they remain in force we both applaud the player who applied them with such immense integrity. For just a few brief moments I was top of the Leader Board and then, before I could bask in the glory, my position was usurped and, along with it, my chance of winning the excellent prize on offer by Continental Wealth Management (CWM). At each of Campbell’s competitions CWM will nominate one par three and any drive which is close to the pin will be measured and, if it is inside any of the previous lengths, the distance will be recorded on the Nearest the Pin Leader Board. At the end of the year the top five places will be awarded an additional prize and the winner will be presented

with a weekend for four golfers in Mallorca, including ferry crossing, hotel and golf fees. As we are now just one third of the way into the year there remains several more opportunities to get inside the current record of 66cms. Lots of luck!

Tony M - I agree that it is often better to have a verbal conversation and especially as texting can lead to some awful mistakes. Tony M - The other reason is that the keys are very small and when it is cold it can be difficult to choose the correct letter. Campbell - Ah yes. What you are experiencing there is that well known problem of typothermia!

Latest Honda Civic DEVELOPING A brand and generating loyalty are two extremely difficult concepts. HONDA HAS to be one of the success stories of the motor industry. When it launched the Civic in 1972 I doubt it envisaged that 20m models would be sold across the world over the next 40 years or that the future would see the Civic being built in the UK. It’s certainly become a popular vehicle and this has subsequently boosted the Honda brand and promoted loyalty The 1.8-litre i-VTEC SR Manual I’m testing is finished in polished metal and is pleasing to the eye. The panoramic glass roof allows greater amounts of light into the cabin, which is certainly helpful when the interior is black. There are a couple of niggles though. Yes, the rear spoiler hampers vision but more importantly I have to watch my knees when I get into the cabin because the corner of the dashboard protrudes and my knee catches it. It hurts. Some might appreciate the warning beeps when reversing or when another vehicle is near but I find them off-putting. It’s an enjoyable drive and the six-speed manual box is a joy to use. However, the front window demists far quicker than the rear window. You would have thought they would clear at the same time. So I have to wait patiently before I can see out of the rear window.

One of the Civic’s strong points is practicality. The boot is far bigger than its competitors’ and there’s loads of room inside thanks to what Honda calls ‘Magic Seats’. These fold in a clever range of combinations, freeing up plenty of space. The Civic has a five-star EuroNCAP rating thanks to its plethora of safety equipment including adaptive cruise

control and collision mitigation – which applies the brakes if it thinks you’re about to crash. There’s a choice of four engines, two petrol and two diesel.
