TORREVIEJA’S FORMER Councillor for Sports and Education of the City of Torrevieja Daniel Plaza Montero, has been cleared of charges of misusing his mobile phone, which was provided to him by the Town Hall. Just over a week has passed since the judgment from the Court of Instruction No. 5, cleared Plaza of any wrongdoing. The former Partido Popular government decided more than a dozen years ago that councillors and those needing service, would be provided with mobile phones, due to the fact that Councillors moved from office to office, attended different meetings and events and were difficult to track down, due to being on the move all the time. While citizens will probably all agree that councillors or those with phones paid for by the pubic purse should not misuse them for personal purposes, local commentators and PP Councillors noted that the move to discredit Snr. Plaza was little more than an opposition publicity campaign coupled with a socialist media campaign to push the former Olympic Gold Medallist out of office. While the UPyD no longer have any seats in Torrevieja, allegations were made by them against Plaza along with Torrevieja’s new Mayor and members of the PSOE.

AFTER AN announcement by Mayor Jose Manuel Dolon about the payment structure of the new five party government, former Mayor Eduardo Dolon and members of Ciudadanos joined forces to overrule the proposed pay structures and send the Mayor back to the drawing board to come up with a new scheme. Playing the political game, some councillors have said that they will not be taking a salary, but just their 250€ for attending meetings, however opposition members have cited this as nothing more than a smoke screen as new proposals are awaited on. On Tuesday, the Municipal Partido Popular spokesman, Eduardo Dolon, issued a report comparing the allocations approved by the full City Council of Torrevieja in 2011 against the proposal submitted to the plenary by the current government on 30th June and the proposal submitted by the Popular Party and Ciudadanos on July 2nd.

Among the conclusions that can be drawn from the analysis, the PP and Ciudadanos note that their figures support each and every one of the statements they have made irrefutably. Eduardo Dolon noted that their proposal, based on figures from 2011 would amount to a saving of 46,270€ per year. In this sense, Eduardo Dolon said; “Once again, we have established that the government team is lying shamelessly, and seek to mislead public opinion whom they are shamelessly trying to manipulate.” Eduardo Dolon then accounted for all the salaries and payments to the previous councillors and workers in 2011-2015 that amounted to 686,560€ with a team of 27 councillors. Eduardo added: “The new Pentapartito Proposal of June 30th was for an annual allocation of 632,800€ however the allocations put forward by the PP and Ciudadanos on July 2nd, 2015 amounted to just 586,530€, a difference of 46,270€.”

JERSEY’S SPORTS minister has apologised for wasting around £1,000 of taxpayers’ money after he mistakenly flew to Budapest instead of Bucharest and missed a global event. Constable Steve Pallett intended to visit Bucharest, Romania, to attend the official handover of the Dance World Cup. Jersey is due to host the annual event next year and he was supposed to receive a flag from his Romanian counterpart at the event. But he flew instead to Budapest, the Hungarian capital, leaving him some 500 miles short of his intended destination and unable to reach the ceremony in time. A spokesman for Jersey’s Education, Sport and Culture department said “human error” was to blame. “It is really disappointing. I apologise for wasting taxpayers’ money and for letting down the Dance World Cup,” said Pallett. “I don’t know the exact cost as I’ve still got some figures to come back, but it won’t be less than £1,000 and the department should have been more careful when it was booked. All I can do is apologise for what is a schoolboy error.The last thing I needed was a day trip to Budapest after a long week supporting the Island Games.”

It is believed going to the ‘back yards’ of fugitives will help flush them out and bring them to justice – once again with the help of the public. Since it was first launched in 2006, Operation Captura has netted 68 out of 86 individuals on the run from police in Britain. Within weeks of the latest appeal in March, three men were arrested within weeks in operations mounted by the NCA and Spanish colleagues. First stop on the 10 day tour was La Cala de Finestrat where tourists and residents were able to view the photos of those on the run – wanted in the UK in connection with crimes such as murder, rape, indecent assault of a child and drug trafficking. Operation Captura has proved that Spain is no longer a safe haven for criminals. With public help, arrests have been made within expat communities where fugitives falsely believed they would be safe – including Calpe, Benissa and Javea.,It is believed the direct approach of the new initiative will bring more success in Operation Captura’s ninth year. The founder and Chairman of Crimestoppers, Lord Ashcroft KCMG PC, said: “Operation Captura has proved a huge success since it was launched in 2006 and the majority of individuals on our most wanted list have been captured. “However, there are still a number of criminals who are evading arrest. We must insure these individuals are brought to justice.” And Roger Critchell, Director of Operations for Crimestoppers, said taking direct action on the Costas was a first for the charity. “We believe that broadcasting there fugitives’ faces right in their own back yards will not only encourage the public to speak up but also show these individuals that there really is nowhere to hide. “There will be no avoiding the faces on this screen – they’ll be broadcast in all the popular expat areas.” He urged anyone recognising one of the fugitives to anonymously contact Crimestoppers. “We don’t take personal details and you won’t have to give a statement or go to court.” Mr Critchell added: “Many of these fugitives are currently living a life of leisure funded by serious crime. They cannot be allowed to hide forever; they must be brought to justice. Do the right thing and help us find them.” Steve Reynolds, deputy Director of the NCA, said the 18 remaining fugitives knew the operation would not stop until they were caught. “By taking our campaign directly into Spanish communities where we believe they are living and socialising, their lives will become even more uncomfortable. We want British expats and locals to help us by being extra eyes and ears and telling us what they know,” he said. “These fugitives are wanted for serious crimes. Anyone who is helping them stay on the run, such as girlfriends, wives, family members back home, or criminal associates, should know that assisting them is an offence too.” Mr Reynolds said people in the UK with vital information about the whereabouts of the missing 18 were also urged to get in touch. Anyone with information about individuals on the Operation Captura list can use a special Spanish freephone number 900 555 111 and the call is answered in the UK by Crimestoppers’ call agents – a translation service is available on request. British couple arrested over fake kidnapping plot IN A dramatic house raid by the Guardia Civil a British couple were arrested following a fake kidnapping plot that was taken seriously.

by Jeanette Rice THE COUPLE, who live in the Costa Blanca resort of Guardamar del Segura have a young daughter, with the grandparents in Manchester having custody. In a bid to try and get their daughter back they cooked up a fake kidnapping plot where the mother of the child was supposedly being held hostage and a ransom of £5,000 was demanded. With graphic photos being sent to the woman’s parents in Manchester, including her being tied up and bruised, and several threatening emails being sent to the family in Manchester they decided to called the police. The National Crime Agency were informed and launched a cross-border operation called “operation Saxony” in conjunction with the Guardia Civil. The incident was qualified as “high risk” and police were extremely concerned for the woman’s safety.

The email messages that were sent to the parents in England were graphically threatening, with the demand from the “kidnapper” being the release and return of her daughter together with the £5,000, hence the extreme concern from the authorities and the subsequent events that followed. After several hours of watching the couples property the Guardia Civil made a surprise raid on the villa and subsequently decided that the kidnapping had in actual fact been fake and immediately arrested the couple. A spokesperson for the Guardia Civil said “it was an elaborate ploy by the couple to get their daughter back and gain financially at the same time”. The couple were remanded in custody whilst a judge decided weather to grant bail pending a full investigation.

Man arrested for floating over Canada in deckchair lifted by 110 balloons

DANIEL BORIA has been arrested after flying over the city of Calgary in Canada on a deck chair attached to a bouquet of balloons. The 26-year-old attempted the life-threatening stunt to promote his cleaning products company. He stated “At one point the balloons were popping, the chair was shaking and I was looking down at my feet dangling through the clouds at a 747 flight taking off.” Boria intended to fly himself to the Calgary Stampede, an annual two-week rodeo, but the weather didn’t cooperate, so he parachuted to the ground about a mile from the event. Police were not impressed by the balloon man’s stunt and upon his landing he was detained but later released. He was charged with one count of mischief causing danger to life. Boria said: “I knew I would get arrested, but I didn’t think they would pursue it as heavily as they did. I’ve never done anything wrong before and this was with good intentions.”

AMIDST CONFLICTING reports the start of the school year in the Valencian region has now been delayed. Vicent Marza, Minister of Education, announced that the dates fixed by the Partido Popular party, the 3rd of September, for pupils to start back to school had now been changed to later in the month. Primary pupils will return to school on 10th September with Secondary schools including Bachillero returning on 11th September. The decision was taken in part to help families with a gradual entry for those who have children in different schools and also to help the teachers with their preparation for the start of the course work. These new dates mean that the end of the school year will now be set at June 21st for the primary schools and June 17th for the secondary schools. Those facilities that come under the training and language school umbrella will start back on September 21st. It is worth noting that parents should continually check their school web sites for any changes during the summer months, as if a decision has been overturned once then there is no doubt that there is a possibility of it occurring again.

THE SPANISH Electricity Network (REE) announced that Monday saw the highest ever demand on their services for four years. Undoubtedly this record will probably be broken before the month is over, or even the week, as many are switching on their air conditioning units in a bid to stay cool, and worrying about the bill later.

Heatwave set to continue

THE HEATWAVE currently being experienced is forecast to continue for the next few weeks. The intense heat is causing wildfires throughout the country and has meant that Spain is on â&#x20AC;&#x153;high alertâ&#x20AC;? probably for at least the rest of the month. Whilst cooler air has brought some relief to Portugal and the northern parts of Spain the rest of the country continues to experience +40C temperatures, causing the young, elderly and animals considerable discomfort. Experts are predicting that this may be the longest lasting heat waves that Spain has every recorded. For the first time, the United Nations World Health Organisation (WHO) and the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) have joined forces and created guidelines for authorities on how to lower the health risks that a heat wave may cause. Animals are also suffering from the extreme heat, with images being published on social media of the effects that the hot tarmac and sand is having on the pad areas of some dogs paws. A guide to weather it is safe to walk your dog is that if you cannot touch the ground because of the heat then it is unsafe for the animal to do so. Common symptoms which a heat wave gives you are: heat stroke, lethargy, dizziness, headaches, sun burn, confusion and exhaustion. While waiting for a doctor or an ambulance donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t give the person suffering any paracetamol or aspirin, if possible move the person somewhere cooler and offer them a cold drink. It is even advised to sprinkle cold water over them to reduce the heat.

Torrevieja’s Blue Flags BLUE FLAGS continue to be added along the Southern Costa Blanca coastline with the region’s second largest costal city, Torrevieja, proudly raising theirs on Monday. by Keith Nicol EACH OF the beaches and bathing areas of Torrevieja now fly the Blue ‘Q’ for quality flags, attesting to the quality of its services ahead of the season, something that did not go unnoticed by the thousands of bathers who flocked to the City of Salt’s beaches as temperatures pushed into the mid-thirties in the shade. Councillor for Beaches, Javier Manzanares, was delighted to perform the symbolic gesture of flag raising as he hoisted the Blue flag as has been done in recent years in the Cala Piteras. Councillor Javier Manzanares, pledged to “continue to increase the quality of beaches and bathing places along the coast and to achieve a greater number of distinctions for next year, because everything can be improved.” Manzanares also referred to the fact that the council are presently studying the opportunities to develop pet friendly beach areas, where dogs can be walked, noting the possibility that it can be located on the beach of La Mata, in the area near the old salt pier. He added “To do this, we will work towards achieving the required permit from the Department of the Costas, as we

have a commitment to the people who own pets, through the departments of Health and Beaches.” Besides Cala Piteras, Blue Flags from the Calidad Turística Española are also flying over Los Náufragos, El Cura and Cabo Cervera La Mata among the 230 beaches that have been selected along the entire Spanish coast. Unlike other distinctive flags, the ‘Q’ not only guar-

antees the quality of water and sand, but the management, cleaning, safety, security, life guards and customer service. This Blue Flag distinction was also renewed the Real Club Nautico of Torrevieja and the main tourist information office of the old Miramar Restaurant on Paseo Vista Alegre. At the same time, flags were also hoisted that certify environmental management and quality.

REGARDING THE cost of the calls in question, especially when compared to the thousands of wasted public and private money and time spent on this and other similar cases, Plaza added; “Second; that amounts and calls of an allegedly irregular nature would total ten euros (without applying the relevant discounts) over a period of 72 months ( six years), working out to a monthly payment of 0.13 cents. The prosecutor and the judge understood that this ‘could not be branded as the case of abusive and disproportionate use, the reason for which, under the principle of minimum intervention, should proceed to regarding dismissal of the case against Daniel Plaza’. And thirdly, once the investigation by the judicial police, hard work and great thoroughness by people who have taken the necessary instructions and measures required (but not by the opposition, nor by the left wing media) materialize “that from the years 2010 to 2012 there is no evidence in the file that calls made by Daniel Plaza respond to purposes other than public office.” After three long years of facing allegations and having his name dragged through the mud by the Socialist media, Plaza added: “It has made headlines in all the media, and I have been bad mouthed, abused, stoned by people who have not been able to value my good management in the departments of education and sports that were my responsibilities, regardless of the pressure it put on my family, especially my wife and three young daughters, with this statement in hand, I wonder where are the people who were opening their mouths and asking for my resignation? Where are all those people coming forward and apologising for having acted in the most vile and despicable way that I have to remember throughout my life? The only thing that has served this situation, that I would not wish on anyone, it is to realize how lucky I am and I appreciate having good friends in Torrevieja. Many people have given me their support, and to the great friends I have, I can never stop thanking them and above all to the good fortune that I have with my family that has again shown me that they are always there.”

choirs that encourage and promote the Habaneras bring the songs close to the public of all ages and especially the families who feel this is part of their culture and even their celebrations. This is what sustains the International Habaneras and Polyphony of Torrevieja to be our window to the world as capital of Havana. In the absence of this popular sentiment, the competition would not have the value it has,” said the Vice President of the Municipal Habaneras. The 61st edition of the International Contest of Habanera and Polyphony of Torrevieja, will take place the following week from 19th to 25th July. For a week the Habanera become undisputed star of Torrevieja’s cultural scene with nightly performances at 11pm in the iconic Eras de la Sal. Fifteen selected choirs from all over the world will compete for the grand prizes but during the week, will also perform on the streets of the city. Carolina Casado will once again be the presenter of the competition. Among the participants this year include choirs from Eastern Europe and Asia. Spain will be represented by four choirs and America by one. The finalists in the category of soloists were selected by the technical committee of the Habaneras Board and come from the regions of Catalonia, Valencia and Murcia and highlight the best voices of the Habaneras style. Uncertainty over air traffic strikes AS THE next wave of air traffic strikes are due to start in Spain the government has imposed further restrictions on the strikers. by Jeanette Rice AT THE time of going to press the strikes planned for 11th and 12th, this coming weekend and also the 25th and 26th of July were going ahead, with USCA (the main traffic controller union) being more resolute than ever that their voices be heard. The union has reacted badly in response to the Development Ministry in Spain setting a new minimum service of 80% should the four days of partial strikes go ahead. This would mean that 8 out of 10 workers must attend to their duties, and is an increase on the 70% that the Ministry imposed in June. Across Europe there is deep unrest amongst workers in the air industry. Following Ryanairâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s online petition

to outlaw ATC strikes in France the union has called for a work to rule on the airlines flights in protest to their anti strike action. Lufthansa pilots union (VC) had been in mediation with their airline and as the conflict has failed to reach a resolution, the union has said that they were stepping up there preparations for industrial action which could happen before the end of the month. With Easyjet flight attendants union (UNITE) also preparing for industrial action over the summer months following the breakdown of their wage negotiations, it seems passengers are in for a very uncertain time.

Britain remembers 7/7 victims By Jack Troughton BRITAIN FELL silent on Tuesday to remember the 52 people killed and the hundreds injured in the terrorist bombings of London on 7th July, 2005. Expats across Spain joined the national minute of silence staged at 11.30am UK time after the names of all 52 victims were read out at St Paulâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cathedral. Afterwards petals were released from the dome of the cathedral and four candles were lit to symbolise the four bobs sites. A decade ago four suicide bombers carried out the single worst terrorist atrocity on British soil when they targeted the capitalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s transport network and yesterday morning emotional services were also held at the four sites attacked and at the 7/7 Memorial in Hyde Park.

THE WINNERS of Torrevieja’s Spring Tapa’s Route were presented on Monday at Torrevieja’s Office of Tourism. by Keith Nicol THE PRESENTATION of the awards for the XII edition of the Ruta de la Tapa, was presided over by the Councillor for Tourism, Fanny Serrano, together with the Councillor for Hospitality, Manuela Osuna. Serrano said: “We will work to enhance a gastronomic Torrevieja and continue the celebration of the route, working in coordination with the establishments. We must seize the opportunity to promote the quality of our cuisine and the fact that right now the Tapas Route overall is very fashionable, and we must incorporate this more decisively into our tourism offer.” The councillors were accompanied by José Antonio Lozano and Luis Miguel Blanco, Chairman and Vice Chairman, respectively, of the Hospitality Association of Torrevieja and Alicia Arenas, coordinator of Torrevieja’s Tourism Training Centre, the CdT. First prize from the professional jury went to Mesón El Huertano for the Gourmet Tapa, best popular Tapa to “Rincón de las Jarras” while the public gave their vote to Mesón de la Costa. ALMOST TWO hundred lifeguards participated in the Spanish Lifesaving Championship on La Mata beach on Saturday and Sunday. This important competition brought together 193 lifeguards from twenty clubs belonging to eight different Autonomous Communities. Throughout the day, lifeguards took part in a number of different tests covering different categories and specialties while hundreds of onlookers watched in fascination and admiration. La Real Federación Española de Salvamento y Socorrismo, The Royal Spanish Federation of Lifesaving, reported that the increased participation of athletes this year was credited to those from Castilla-La Mancha, with 44 registered lifeguards,from three clubs. They were followed by Madrid (35 lifeguards from five clubs), Cantabria (30 lifeguards from two clubs), Galicia (26 from five clubs), Valencia (22 participants from three clubs), Castila y Leon (14 from two clubs), Canarias (12 lifeguards representing one club) and Catalonia (10 from three clubs). This numbers reflect a slight increase in participants in relation to the 2014 edition which also took place on La Mata Beach. La Real Federación Española de Salvamento y Socorrismo, organises and sanctions the events in collaboration with the Department of Sports from the Ayuntamiento de Torrevieja.

Nasty Nomads ONCE AGAIN, freeloaders have hijacked the public car park at La Marina beach. Residents have to park far from the beach; and some even have to give up and go home, all because of nasty nomads who will not pay the fees for the necessary facilities for waste and foul water. I say “Nasty nomads, if you don’t pay, then don’t stay”. These freeloading camper vans get bigger each year. Most residents who pay taxes think that these nasty nomads should not be allowed to take over our car parks during the summer. Recently the local police issued parking tickets to the cars surrounding the car park. This would not have happened if the car park had been used for its purpose and not as a free camp site! The victims are punished and the police turn a blind eye to the wrongdoers. A simple solution would be to erect a height restriction barrier at the entrance to both car parks to keep them out. Surely these nomads cannot continue year after year! Stephen Harper, La Marina

Foster home wanted

WE HOPE your readers can help the Orihuela ASOKA animal refuge. We have a 5 year old Boxer dog called Napoleon in need of foster care. He has cancer of the jaw which is spreading throughout his body and our vets have decided it’s kinder not to treat him. It’s a decision we have to respect. We’d like to find him a home for the final weeks of his life. He’s a super boy who loves his strokes and walks. He doesn’t get on with cats or other male dogs and this has proved hard when finding him another home. We hope someone in the Costa Blanca area may give this wonderful boy a home for the last few weeks of his life. He needs to stay in this area so he can get care from our own vets. Good Samaritan WHEN MY VW Golf car overheated on 30 June and I broke down just south of Torrevieja town centre I was stumped as to what to do. Luckily I had enough water to refill the reservoir, but what next? To my surprise a Spanish speaking (German) gentleman passing by stopped to see what the problem was and being a retired mechanic he assessed the problem immediately as the electric fan was not working. He said the temporary solution would need a connector to by-pass the electric cable that was not working. Luckily, we were parked near a car dealer and we bought a small plastic clip and were amused, not just by the charge of 73 cents but by the work, and cost, involved in printing out an A4 receipt etc! The temporary fix was perfect and our good Samaritan would not accept any financial reward and left without even reimbursement of his 73 cents! “Genuinely nice people go out of their way to help others” A credit to Torrevieja. I’VE JUST spent 2weeks in Benidorm whereI like to sunOliver Doherty, Orihuela Costa bathe at the beach. After paying for loungers we discovered we were not allowed to move them until the afternoon. They are now a good distance from the water and, as the beach near the water is taken up by the locals you have to squeeze past to get to the sea. As for the beach sellers, there will soon be more of them than tourists, all making plenty of tax free money. Things are getting worse and very off-putting. Instead of increasing the prices I think they should have brought the prices down. Susan Friel

Keep passports safe BRITISH EXPATS and visitors are being urged to keep their passports safe from thieves preying on the unwary at Spanish holiday resorts and beaches this summer. by Jack Troughton THE FOREIGN Office has launched a video campaign aimed at helping people avoid the threat of criminals as tens of thousands of British residents and millions of UK visitors head for potential crime hotspots. Some 15 million British tourists touched down in Spain last year. More than 3,000 reported their passports were stolen and nearly 1,800 reported their vital travel documents had been lost. Stealth crime expert James ‘Man of Steal’ Freedman has worked with the Foreign Office to make a series of short films that highlight techniques employed by passport thieves and offer advice on how to combat the threat they pose. They can be watched at the government You Tube channel www.youtube.com/user/fcotravel. James said: Pickpockets and thieves constantly evolve their techniques and tactics. These videos show just a handful of ways that a pickpocket might attempt to steal from you, so remember some basic advice to stay safe. “If you don’t need to take your passport with you, leave it in your hotel safe instead. Only carry what you need and keep valuables in a secure pocket. If you have a bag or case, never let it out of your sight. “Be more aware in crowds and wary of anyone getting too close. Finally, try not to advertise the location of prized possessions by patting your pockets or bags.” HUSTLE British victims have spoken of a number of “hustle” tactics used against them – including being surrounded by a bunch of children patting them while begging for money; they leave only

for the victim to realise their pockets and bag have been picked. Other techniques include: being followed onto a crowded underground train by two ‘nuns’ who are pickpockets; having a bag stolen from an unlocked car to drop rubbish in a bin just a few feet away; being asked to reach for something from a high shelf whilst they are pick pocketed; and being pricked with a sharp object hard enough to draw blood, in the confusion a bag disappears. Unfortunately, dealing with a stolen or lost passport can be expensive and time-consuming. A victim may need to report the loss to the police and spend time and money at the nearest British consulate to obtain an emergency travel document. And the British Embassy in Madrid offers five top tips. If you carry a passport, insure it is well concealed; never take

your eyes of a bag or case – even for a moment; be alert in crowds and wary of people getting close or trying to distract you; in cars keep valuables secure and out of sight and be aware thieves use distraction tactics on the road and when you park; and avoid advertising the location of a passport or valuables by patting pockets or bags. It is also advised to keep a photocopy of a passport with friends or family, or to store an electronic copy securely. If a passport is stolen or lost, report it to the Spanish police via a multilingual service at 0034 902 102 112. The team at Free Lunch Spain have been informing the community about life in Spain for over a year now. Since June 2014 experts from four local companies have answered over 1,000 questions from the people who have attended. This has been a fantastic opportunity to get all the facts about life in Spain. 2015 Summer youth programme THE NEW Summer Youth programme was presented on Tuesday by the new Councillor for Youth, Pablo Hernandez Samper, accompanied by youth information staff Rosa Mª Lázaro and Gustavo García.

by Keith Nicol THE CENTRE for Information and Youth Animation (CIAJ), this year includes a wide range of leisure and recreation options, workshops and language training for the months of July, August and September. The Councillor of Youth noted that the youth programme is already underway, beginning on July 1st with the urban youth camp for teens aged 12 to 16 years with still a few places available for the second half of the program. Pablo Samper added that the purpose of this summer camp is the teaching of values and coexistence among youth of the town. He also highlighted the areas of language training, a course on Adobe Photoshop, a course of practical English for ESO students and a preparatory course for certification of B1 level English, the latter supported by the Delegation of Alicante. In September, the ever-popular English Conversation classes will return, coordinated by local resident Crystal East.

Leisure time activities include water sports like kayaking and dinghy sailing in collaboration with the Real Club Nautico of Torrevieja, an intensive urban dance session in collaboration with the Payás Academy and a cultural trip to Madrid to see the musical Lion King. The third edition of the ‘Jam Session’ will take place on International Youth Day, 12th August and the Third Conference of alternative leisure Comar-CON by AJ La comarca will return to the CMO on 5th and 6th September. He added that applications are still open for participation in the 14th edition of the provincial Youth Awards convened by Council of Alicante that this year has 20,000€ in prizes. Freemasons donate to Paul Cunningham Nurses THE FREEMASONS from the Alicante Province, generously presented equipment to Paul Cunningham Nurses Charity on Saturday 4th July at La Marina. Representing the Freemasons were Barrie Mansell, Keith Allcock and John Davy. Tricia Lee, fundraiser for the charity, gratefully accepted the wonderful donation on behalf of Paul Cunningham Nurses. The equipment consisted of a hospital bed, three mattresses and three wheelchairs. This will give the charity a boost and be able to assist many more terminally ill patients with the extra appliances. A royal christening for the nation by Jeanette Rice

PRINCESS CHARLOTTE Elizabeth Diana was christened on Sunday in front of a small family gathering but also the nation. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, commonly know world wide as just William and Kate, had invited members of the public to share the day with them, saying “we want to say thank you for all the support that the general public have given us”. An estimated 3,500 keen royal fans lined the entrance to St Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham and were not disappointed as William, Kate, young George and Charlotte could be seen walking to the church. George, holding his fathers hand, seemed a little distracted by the cheering crowds whilst Charlotte, in a vintage pram, slept for most of the stroll. Princess Charlotte, now ten weeks old, was the seventh royal baby to wear the historic Honiton christening gown, a replica of the gown worn firstly by Queen Victoria’s eldest daughter in 1841. The 16th century church, just down the road from the young royals family home at Anmer Hall, is also where the late Princess Diana was christened in 1961. Following in royal tradition, holy water taken from the River Jordan, where it is said Jesus was baptised by John the Baptist, was used for the baptism. Although the ceremony was private, with the Queen, Prince Philip, Prince Charles, Camilla and Kate’s family attending as well as the godparents, the young royal family were delighted that so many people came to celebrate the event with them. One lady, Laurie Spencer aged 52 from Florida, was in the

country to watch the Silverstone Formula One race when she heard about the christening. An avid royal fan, Laurie said “when I found out that the christening was happening while we were here I just knew I had to be there, so my husband has gone to the race without me”. Another royal fan, Jenny Gellert from Sydney in Australia, said “I go wherever the royal family goes”. To the surprise of some, neither Prince Harry or Pippa Middleton were on the list for godparents, with Kate and William picking five non-royal friends and family members. They were, Tom van Straubenzee, one of Prince Williams closest friends, James Meade, a friend of Williams from Eton, Sophie Carter, a close friend to Kate, Laura Fellowes, the niece to the late Princess Diana and a good friend to William and finally Adam Middleton, Kate’ cousin.

Man realises his two dogs are bears

A CHINESE man who spent two years raising two puppies was left stunned when he realised they were, in fact, endangered Asian black bears – and not dogs. Wang Kayui, a banana farmer from the Yunnan Province in China, bought the two ‘puppies’ in Vietnam in 2013 and enjoyed grooming and bathing them on a daily basis. However the animals started behaving ‘strangely’, killing his pet chickens, developing an insatiable appetite for food, and growing to around 100lbs each. His error was finally confirmed when he spotted leaflets which had been issued by the local public security bureau on endangered wild animals – when he immediately recognised he had been illegally keeping the Category 2 protected endangered animals by accident. After contacting the bureau, the bears – one male and one female – were collected and are currently said to be in a ‘good condition’, weighing-in at around 50kg each. The rescue centre they are being looked-after in is currently looking for other suitable living arrangements for the pair. Asian black bears are considered to be ‘vulnerable’ by animal conservationists and their numbers have been dropping over the years because of deforestation and hunting.

New mayor of Madrid plans to rename Margaret Thatcher Square THE SQUARE, named after Britain’s “Iron Lady” not even a year ago is under threat along with the statue of the ex British prime minister. Manuela Carmena, the mayor of Madrid, said that “the square should not bear the name of the Iron Lady who enslaved the labour movement”. In the UK, members of parliament have criticised the move. Nigel Evans MP even suggesting that “the mayor would be better naming more squares after Margaret Thatcher in the hope that her success rubs off especially with youth unemployment in Spain at 49.3 per cent, rather than continuing the economic failure of socialism”. Conor Burns MP said that the change would “be petty”. The mayor of Madrid is considering the change following the recent elections where members of Spain’s anti austerity party, Podemos, formed a coalition with her. They have called for the removal of Mrs Thatcher’s name. Mr Evans was at the original naming ceremony on behalf of the prime minister, reading out a letter from Downing Street in front of some of Mrs Thatcher’s family at the event. He went on to say “it was a gesture that Lady Thatcher would have been flattered by, she had a great fondness for Spain and spent several holidays there”.In response to the comments referring to Margaret Thatcher enslaving people Mr Evans said “she enslaved no one, thanks to her dynamic leadership the country now enjoys the economic success it has with the fastest growing economy in Europe”. After only a few weeks of the ceremony the square suffered vandalism on several occasions and protestors attempted to rename the square. Ms Carmena’s party has said “that although this is not as much as a priority as dealing with our homeless issues and the crisis that is hitting the poor, we will also be getting rid of all the Fraoncist names and tributes in our city”.A statue of Franco on a horse has already been removed, but there are many other monuments and signs that need to be removed.

Fire brigade rescues hedgehog stuck between bars

THE HAPLESS hedgehog nearly made it through the bars of a gate before becoming solidly wedged in. Luckily, a passerby found him and called the RSPCA, but the hedgehog was stuck too fast and they had to call in the rescue services. The fire brigade in Newmarket, Suffolk, dressed in full protective gear, brought their pneumatic jack to the scene, prized the bars open and freed the hedgehog which was tired but otherwise unhurt. RSPCA inspector Richard Lythgoe said: “I can only imagine he misjudged the width of the bars or perhaps did not see them clearly as hedgehogs are short-sighted. He was so firmly wedged between the bars of this gate that the fire crews had to completely stretch them to get him out and even then all his little spines were squashed down. They did a brilliant job, and there’s no way I could have got him out without them.” He added: “I gave the hedgehog some food and drink and kept an eye on him for 36 hours. He seemed to recover completely from his ordeal, so he was released back to the wild - hopefully a little wiser.”

Bringing you Artists Direct FOR YEARS the number one entertainment complaint on the Costa’s has been the lack of advance information as to where and when artists are performing. by Keith Nicol

AFTER JUST a month of corresponding with local entertainers and venues, a new website has been launched, designed to help you plan your nights on the town while also acting as a valuable source for the artists and venues when it comes to bookings, late changes, special nights and information about the artists and venues. Artists Direct was the inspiration of local entertainer and computer guru Heather Baggaley with the basic concept being to provide visitors with a website offering information pages about local acts, enabling them to promote themselves and be booked direct along with sharing information through Social Media. Their Facebook page and group encourage venues and artists to interact offering a one stop, sharable promotional link for both acts and venues who are seeking entertainment. For the first time on the Costa Blanca, each artist is now responsible for producing their own publicity materials and keeping their appointment book up to date, rather than artists hoping that the venues will do this

task for them. Thus the website is produced by the artists for the benefit of the artist’s community in the promotion of themselves, their acts and availability. Many readers will remember Elite Entertainment and the good news is that founder Norma Reilly joined Artists Direct two weeks ago, in an administrative role, giving Heather the freedom to develop and expand the website. Norma will liaise with the artists, gathering information of their bookings and produce the Gig Guide for both the website and different media publications. The website and Facebook pages allow artists to have their publicity pictures, video clips, sound clips, links to their own websites and automatic insertion onto the online Gig Guide plus availability, all at the push of a few buttons. It’s also a source for venues seeking entertainment to post via the Facebook Group (book acts direct -spain) to all artists registered on the site if they are seeking entertainment. Artists Direct do not act as entertainment agents as the aim of the website is simply to help promote artists to gain bookings and

venues to find artists. Entertainment venues can simply view the artistes online, hear them and know off their availability with the view of booking them and taking the guess work out of who they have chosen as a new act to perform at their venue. Currently the area covered is around Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa and Southern Costa Blanca but is expanding into Benidorm, the Northern Costa Blanca and Murcia. Route 66 diner helps raise 625 euros for horse rescue centre A FUNDRAISER celebrating the first anniversary of Benimar’s Route 66 American diner has helped raise 625 euros for the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre at Rojales. by Patricia Thompson RESCUE CENTRE co-founder Sue Weeding thanked everyone who supported the dinner and raffle last Tuesday (June 16), saying the money would go towards the feeding and care of the centre’s more than 90 horses, ponies and donkeys rescued from abuse and neglect. “It was a very busy day, as Rod had been called out by the police to rescue a horse and later had 700 bales of alfalfa to get off the field,” Sue said. “I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to attend because I broke my wrist a few weeks ago and can’t drive. But at the last minute all our volunteers from our La Zenia charity shop came to the rescue. They bought the raffle prizes with their own money and picked me up to make sure I could be there. It was just wonderful and a huge thanks to everyone involved.” The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre relies solely on donations to fund its animal welfare work. As part of its fundraising ef-

forts, Sue said a ninth charity shop selling second hand clothes, furniture and bric-a-brac will soon open in Dolores. A manager and volunteers are needed to run the Dolores shop, which is expected to open in about four weeks’ time. If you’re interested in helping out, please call Sue on 652 021 980. Large donated items such as furniture can be collected from your house and each shop also offers a delivery service for large items purchased from the charity stores. Rawhiders donate to AFA

FOR THE third year running, the Costa Blanca Rawhiders motorcycle club have donated money to Torrevieja’s Alzheimer charity AFA. They rode into town on Saturday 27th June and handed 583€ to AFA President Mathilde Sanchez, who thanked them again for their generosity and welcomed their offer to raise further funds for the charity. Mathilde also expressed her concern over funding for the Association in view of the recent local change in political power; donations such as this being particularly important unless future funding is guaranteed. After coffee and a tour of the AFA premises, near the former railway station, the group asked Mathilde if she wanted a ride on one of their powerful motor cycles; she declined, but instead offered to pose on one of them. Thanks go to everyone concerned.

Local ladies raise money for Red Cross Nepal

A GROUP of friends from the Altea area got together recently to raise money in aid of the Red Cross Nepal appeal. A ´bring and buy´ sale was held in Mascarat, supported by people up and down the Costa Blanca from Benidorm to Denia. Cava and nibbles were served while the guests browsed the clothes and household items on sale. The organisers, Juliana Blythe, Vima Orozco and Fiona Hulme were delighted to raise over €350 on the evening, with more promised in donations. Juliana said ´having seen the disastrous scenes in Nepal following the earthquakes, we wanted to do something to help the people trying to survive in one of the world´s poorest countries. Many thanks to everyone who gave Juliana Blythe, Vima Orozco , Fiona Hulme donations or came along on the evening.´

SOMETIMES FOREIGN citizens who buy or want to buy a property in Spain, are not familiar with Spanish law, and don’t know that many of the things that are normal in their home country, work in a completely different way in Spain. IN TODAY’S article we would like to talk about mortgage loans, and some basics that buyers should consider: If you need to obtain a mortgage to buy a property in Spain, it is highly recommended when you sign a private purchase contract, reservation, etc. you place as a condition the approval of the loan by your bank, noting that if finally the bank does not approve it, the money paid will be paid back to you, agreeing that the parties resolve and terminate the contract by mutual consent. If not, and the bank does not grant the loan, you could be taken before the Spanish Tribunals for a claim of breach of contract, and asked for compensation, face the loss of the money paid, etc. It is very important to study not only in the interest

rate of the loan, but also other terms, conditions and economic commissions, such as the arrangement fee, valuation fees, fees for payment in advance: partial or total cancellation fees, etc. . as they can be a significant amount. Contrary to what happens in other countries, you should know that the valuation / survey made by the bank to determine the value of the property (and therefore the amount of the loan) normally will not be relevant to your agreement and therefore will not affect the price agreed with the seller. In addition, in recent times, banks “invite” their customers to contract different kinds of insurance policies, which can have really important influence on the real cost of the mortgage loan, as important

as the agreed interest rate. Although legally, if you get a mortgage loan you will be required to contract an insurance on the property, naming the lending bank as a beneficiary, you are not required to hire such insurance with the bank’s insurer, you can do it with any other insurance company that you want. Similarly, banks offer better conditions, subject to the client to contract other types of insurance with them, as such as life insurance, home, etc. Therefore, if obtaining the loan is conditioned on the hiring of their insurances policies, it is essential to compare its cost with others in the market, since the real cost of the loan can be increased very significantly. Just a thought for you all, the Greek banks offer the same bank guarantee as the UK, Spain and the EU, that is your money is guaranteed up to €100,000 or £85,000, however what use is this guarantee if you cannot withdraw any money.

New electric meters change households routines

NEW ELECTRIC meters have been installed up and down the coast in residential properties to encourage efficiency. by Jeanette Rice FOLLOWING THE new regulations that came into force on July 1st the electricity providers have been rapidly installing new smart meters with 11.9 million households already having had the switch. A key change with the new meters is that customers will now be charged on a daily rate with per hour fluctuations as opposed to a rate that was adjusted every three months via an energy auction. Rates fluctuate depending on when customers choose to use their electricity, with records showing that the demand is highest between 12 noon and 11pm and more specifically between 8 pm and 11 pm when workers get home and cook, watch television etc. Users of the new meters now have a similar system to that used in England where it is cheaper to use such household items as washing machines and dishwashers after 11 pm and before 12 noon. There is also a special weekend rate where the daily costs is slightly lower than that during the week. The government set the start date as July 1st although in practical terms not all households will have the new meters yet, and the suppliers have until the end of 2018 to make the changes.

The European Investment Bank (EIB) is funding €325 million (£227.5m) to improve the electricity grid in Spain, with Iberdrola using the money to reform the electricity network and install more than 3 million smart meters across 10 regions, including Madrid, Valencia, Pais Vasco and Navarra. Román Escolano, EIB Vice President, said “The reform of the electricity network will help reduce waste while the replacement of smart meters will help householders use electricity efficiently and reduce carbon emissions”. As with all things, word of mouth and internet sites have conflicting information about the new system, so here are a few facts. The installation of the new meter is free, although there is a monthly rental on the bill, approximately 0,50 cents. Some house owners have opted to have their own smart meter installed but according to some engineers the life span of a smart meter is not as long as the traditional meter and therefore it may not be cost effective to keep providing your own. Any additional works that would be required to the meter will be charged to the client. Although it is mandatory to have a smart meter, as

stated companies have until the end of 2018 to reach all their clients, so if your home has not had the change suppliers are asking for customers to be patient whilst they continue to complete this huge task. In the coming month, those with the new meters will receive their bills with the new tariff in effect, and no doubt some will benefit whilst others may find that there has been an increase.

Controlling mosquitos and midges in your garden by

FIFTY YEARS ago much of the Spanish Mediterranean coastline was still marshland or drained marshland for growing vegetables and fruit. Except in Tossa del Mar, Benidorm and Torremolinos the idea of mass tourism had yet to be born and most Spaniards lived or returned from the cities to holiday in the cooler mountain villages a few kilometres inland. Coastal living except in small fishing communities had been avoided for centuries for fear of marauding pirates from north Africa – hence the many ancient watch towers along the coasts – and the mosquitoes and malaria, yellow fever and cholera of polluted waters draining from villages. 1950’s and early 60’s package tour holiday makers to Spain will remember the recommended pre holiday injections and pills. Luckily DDT, until banned as a dangerous chemical, cleared the major swarms of malaria carrying mosquitoes and modern sanitation installations cleaned up village effluents - until overloaded by excessive building! But damp conditions inevitably attract mosquitoes and midges to the countryside and some gardens and big bighting tiger mosquitoes are said to be back in the Ebro delta. So what can be done to minimise the potential problem. 20 PRACTICAL WAYS OF REDUCING MOSQUITO AND MIDGE POPULATIONS IN YOUR GARDEN Don’t purchase a property near marsh lands, rivers, lakes or land that floods after storms. Plant insect inhibiting plants around the house especially under the windows most likely to be opened. Possible plants include lantanas, basil, citronella lemongrass, Graveolens scented pelargoniums, chives, society garlic and normal garlic in pots near doorways or on windowsills.

When we had a walking holiday in Mauritius and Reunion Island we were advised to rub lantana leaves in our hands and then on any exposed skin to deter mosquitoes and midges. Locals used oil or water extracts on a regular basis. Hang bunches of herbs on the walls of covered terraces to provide hiding places for insect eating geckoes. Hang bunches of rue alongside or above doorways. Use a garlic concoction as an insecticide in the flower and vegetable garden. Cover water butts with well sealing lids and use the water regularly to stop larvae developing and hatching out and creating space for the next rain. Have a pond with fish and frogs. The water will attract any wind blown mosquitoes and midges and the fish and frogs will soon devoir any mature insects or larvae in or around the pond. Don’t be surprised to see frogs jumping half a metre into the air to grab a midge on the flower of a lavender plant. From personal observation they have amazing eyesight as well as accurate jumping ability. Construct a rockery with holes for lizards which eat a variety of flying insects. Don’t encourage cats or dogs to see lizards and geckoes as play things. Make Victorian style pomanders by sticking cloves into an orange and placing on window sills to deter mosquitoes from entering and also place on outside dining tables to deter them while dinning. Check that your regular perfumes and after shaves are not insect attractors. Soak some cotton wool with the liquids and place on a saucer on the terrace as dusk approaches in an area where an outside light will eventually light it up and watch what happens.

Set the lawn irrigation system to come on during the night and not in the evening when the family, pets and insects are still moving around. Don’t over water terrace or house plants. Don’t leave rain water standing in buckets, watering cans, or wheel barrows. Use it to water plants in covered areas, pour into a water butt or pond or dampen the compost heap if possible. If you invest in a liquid gas fired mosquito attracting/ catching machine size it according to your size of property. An oversized machine may attract all the mozzies from the entire urbanisation and not just your garden! If you buy a terrace heater than burns liquefied gas recognise that these produce carbon dioxide that attract mosquitoes and midges in the same way as mosquito machines so preferably use on terraces well away from the house. If you leave bedroom windows open in the evening leave the lights off. Install a bat box under the eaves as they hunt flying insects at dusk. Use perfumed flares around the garden especially when having a barbecue party. Install an electric insect stunner. Set up bird tables, water bowls and nesting boxes to increase insect eating garden bird population. Such actions can avoid the expense of unsightly mosquito screens on windows and doors, chemical based insect sprays or chemical block evaporators especially in bedrooms. Act now and enjoy the remaining balmy evenings and nights without resorting to mosquito nets.

Skydive, for the love of dogs! EVERYBODY KNOWS the name Siesta Group – one of the largest garden furniture retailers on the Costa Blanca. What you may not know is that business owner Sandra Hamnett is a bit of a dog fanatic and when she’s not looking after her cute cuddly brood at home she is busy trying to help Costa Blanca Dog Homing raise cash to rescue, foster and re-home abused and abandoned dogs. Sandra, together with Rachel Crawford, another dog lover and friend from Inspired Home and Garden in Albox, decided to try something different to raise awareness of the problem and also raise funds to assist Costa Blanca Dog Homing and Rachel’s chosen charity Helping Animals Almanzora. Two more brave ladies will be joining them in the skydive, Sandra’s niece Shona, who will be getting her sponsorship from the UK, and Amanda Willett, who has 3 rescue dogs of her own. On August 9th in Valencia these “barking mad” ladies will skydive from an aeroplane, freefalling for about 50 seconds, after which a parachute “should” open and bring them safely back to earth. None of these ladies has done this before but they are so committed to their chosen charities they want to go that extra mile and, in return, are asking people to sponsor them. The skydive itself has been paid for by the brave ladies so all sponsorship money goes directly to the dog charities. Costa Blanca Dog Homing and Helping Animals Almanzora help dogs in Spain, generally doing what they can to help any dog in need. Guitar great comes to town IRISH GUITAR hero Pat McManus of Mama’s Boys and Celtus fame, is visiting Spain for three nights only, this weekend. by Keith Nicol Local entertainer and broadcaster Paul Cullen noted: “We’re very lucky in this area that over the last 10 years we’ve had the opportunity to witness first hand some of the world’s greatest guitarists: Bo Diddley, George Benson and Gary Moore to name just three. Over the last thirty years Pat has shared stages and toured with the likes of Bon Jovi, Thin Lizzy, Meatloaf and many others, performing at many of the world’s biggest festivals including Knebworth and Reading plus as Paul put it; “Pat is widely regarded as Ireland’s greatest living guitarist.” The Pat McManus Band will be performing three exclusive shows at Paddy’s Point on Friday 10th, Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th July. two brothers soon swapped their Fiddles, Uilleann Pipes and Bodhrans for electric instruments and formed their first band called ‘Pulse’, with Pat on Guitar, John on Bass and Vocals and Tommy, who was only 12 at the time, on drums. During an interview with Radio Luxembourg DJ Tony Prince, who remarked how young they all were, jokingly called them Mamas Boys, the boys changed their name. It was just meant to be an ‘off the cuff’ remark but the name stuck and soon the thee brothers were officially known as Mamas Boys. In 1985 they toured the States with Bon Jovi and Ratt before briefly flying back to England to play the Knebworth festival with Deep Purple in front of 100,000 people. The tour ended up in Europe with Gary Moore and then onto Ireland by themselves in December of that year. In 1997 under a new name “Celtus” they supported Sheryl Crow on tour, this time with Paul Carrick on lead vocal, and to top off an incredible year on the 23rd February 1998, the band were presented with the Irish World Music awards, Best Album Of The Year award, beating off stiff competition from U2, The Corrs and Enya. The new line up have been touring together for many years and bring their unique blend of Celtic, guitar rock fusion and a whole lot more to the Orihuela Costa this weekend. Surprise Surprise broadcasts from Benidorm

THE SURPRISE Surprise team recently visited Benidorm to reunite a huge “Benidorm” fan with a long lost friend. Mairwen Turton, aged 52, was nominated to the Surprise Surprise team by her daughter, Davina Grice aged 28. Davina said “my mum continually goes above and beyond the call of duty for me and the elderly people that she cares for, and I wanted to do something very special to say thank you”. Davina wanted to reunite her mum with her childhood best friend who had relocated to Canada in 1974 at the age of 12. Susan Hollossy and Mairwen were inseparable as children but hadn’t seen each other for 40 years. The team of Surprise Surprise decided to combine the reunion with Mairwen’s love of the popular television programme Benidorm and arranged for some of the cast of the popular ITV programme to be at the reunion. Sherrie Hewson said “it’s really exciting for us as the Benidorm cast to so something special for Surprise Surprise, the fans have always been so loyal to Benidorm so we are always delighted to do what we can when the opportunity comes our way”. Also at the surprise event were Jake Canuso (Mateo), Tony Maudsley (Kenneth) and Tim Healy (Les). The programme will be aired this Sunday, 12th July, on ITV at 8pm.

Tram company FGV offer combined theme park tickets THE TRAM company FGV are offering a combined theme park ticket which includes the tram fare and entrance to the parks. In hindsight you never would have got involved if you had known what was going on, but it is now your wisdom and good judgement stand you in good stead. Mighty Uranus, planet of invention and progress, sixes up to the Sun energy this week. The combination brings you to see a project through to completion, knowing, as you do, that it is not just pie in the sky. Better things come from good intentions and now you have your act together it is time to ensure that you get your say. Mercury’s trine with Neptune is actually a call to start to economise ahead of tough financial aspects ahead. Not only is it the time to pull your belt in, but also a time to review expenditure in general, because, however you do your sums there is something somewhere that just does not add up right now; and this action acts as an early warning! Enough of conjecture and dissatisfaction! Whatever is wrong now won’t get any better if you are afraid to take the next step. Mercury’s heavy conjunction with Mars may bring somebody to their senses, but it is meant to warn you too that something very drastic will have to be done if others do not start to toe the line.

DO YOU remember the rhyme about the Magpie? One for sorrow, two for joy, three for a girl, four for a boy, five for silver and six for gold, seven for a secret never to be told! I guess nobody ever saw more than seven magpies together, so it ends just where it does. I was in Norway and staying with friends in a leafy suburb of Trondheim. They have two dogs and a cat, and in such circumstances I generally find that the cat is definitely the boss of the house. One sunny afternoon when I had a break and the sun shone ( a rare combination) I decided to take both the dogs out for a walk around the neighbourhood. Just behind the house was a pathway leading to a common, so the three of us made our way along a lane to access it. I was careful to keep both the dogs on leads, and luckily they were obviously used to walking together because two dogs pulling in opposite directions is no fun. I do not know how those guys in Central Park, New York manage to walk fourteen dogs simultaneously and unaided. To my surprise the Cat decided to walk with us. I did not notice him at first, as he kept disappearing behind hedges, trotting across gardens and lurking in high grasses. Throughout the walk that cat was with us, following us somewhat, but taking a cat like highly independent stance on the journey. The two dogs had a wonderful walk enjoying the sunshine and the fresh air escorted by me, but the cat had his own disdainful way of showing his highly individual country trip. Ahead of us all the way that cat planned the trip his way, and in the end it was me and the dogs that were following him. I became very conscious of a large black bird that kept flying all around us all. The flashes of white plumage and the long tail were oddly familiar. As the bird flew ever closer to us the feathers were actually a deep shiny purple. It was indeed a magpie, and it was following the cat that was following the dogs that I was walking. Expecting the magpie to fly away at any moment, it did not. It kept diving towards the cat. I was reminded of the rhyme and one magpie was seemingly bad luck. Still with every flutter of feathers I thought that the magpie would leave us. There were some high flights to the tops of trees but then a lower dive brought this plucky bird back to earth. Anyone that met me that afternoon would think that I had a menagerie of animals around me. I couldn’t wait to tell my hosts what had happened on our afternoon walk. To my surprise they told me that the cat regularly goes on walks with the dogs, and that the magpie often played in the garden with the cat as if they were friends. How wonderful would it be if those who would be our enemies could be our best friends instead? Friends come in all shapes and sizes, and in the end everyone could get on with everyone. It is the spiritual way to embrace and love all, after all. We often never know who our friends could be. My afternoon walk taught me such a lot. The only negative point of the afternoon I could conceive was the sorrow of the individual magpie. As I looked out onto the garden the magpie had a mate and they were both proudly waddling around the lawn in the fading light of a Norwegian Summer afternoon and under the watchful eye of the cat. Two for joy!

This is a time to focus on your own educative plan, because there are some sincere lessons to be learned. You are biding your time and biting your tongue before you do something that will sincerely put someone in their place, but stored anger does not bode well for you. Mars directs Mercury to ensure that a message does get through. You just cannot let someone make the mistake that you know they are about to make. On the understanding that this may go against you somewhat, your silence now is hurting you even more. Deep thinking Pluto and wily Saturn are ever close to ensure that when the time does come that you alone do the decent thing! Basking in the energy of the phasing Moon this week is a great time for you to take some good care of yourself, for a change. There is magic afoot that will release you from nagging doubt, and direct you in a far different direction. It is what you haven’t yet done that makes the very best of differences to you right now. Uranus dallies with the potent energies of the Sun this week. You should be very unafraid to take on the new if there is the slightest inkling that you get a better deal elsewhere; because someone is playing games with you, and whilst they won’t win in the end, and they know it, they’ll bring you to your knees just because they can. An ebullient Neptune brushes up to Mercury in a week that is full of good intention and blessings. You have carved a new niche for yourself, and it is through your own intelligence and foresight that much of the past is now, thankfully, water under the bridge. Focus on what you most need because is time you were rewarded all ways.

My Aunt believes in spiritual things and she has confirmed to me that I do indeed have a sister in Spirit. My Mother never told me. Kay Mc.F. Kay, there are secrets given away in readings sometimes, and it is inevitable. I do not take delight in being the person to tell you the truth, for truth’s sake, but your sister was so very close to you that day we met together. I do hope that you do not judge your Mother for holding on to her secret because she will have had her reason, of that I am sure!

Monica setting the dodgy records straight Monica Lewinsky, a girl from San Francisco, was front page news around the world in 1998 when at just 24 years old she had an “inappropriate relationship” with US President Bill Clinton. Once the dust settled on the scandal she took up a variety of ventures including designing a line of handbags, being an advertising spokesperson for a diet plan, a television personality, before leaving the spotlight to study for a master’s degree in psychology in London. It’s this final pursuit I want to focus on today, as last month Monica was invited to The Cannes International Festival of Creativity, an event that brings together worldwide advertising professionals, designers and digital innovators. This is where the story takes an unfortunate historical twist. Seventeen years on from the “inappropriate relationship” it became clear that the incident was still uppermost in a lot of minds, as although she was initially offered a seat in a box where Al Gore, vicepresident to Bill Clinton would be sitting, Monica felt uncomfortable enough to make her way to the main audience area. Gore was there to receive an award for his work in climate change on which Lewinsky said to the The Guardian “I have tremendous respect for the work former Vice President Gore is doing.” Then Monica opened her heart saying “Not a day goes by that I am not reminded of my mistake, and I regret that mistake deeply. I was swept up into an improbable romance, then swept up in a political, legal and media maelstrom, and thanks to the digital revolution, overnight I went from being a completely private person, to being publicly humiliated worldwide.” Monica now dedicates her life to helping victims of cyberbullying.

Donald Trump was bragging last week about the golf courses he´s build around the world. Like Trump International near Aberdeen for example that promised to generate 6,000 jobs, but actually created less than 200. It also left a 90-year-old woman without proper water supply for years, and elderly farmer Michael Forbes, who refused to sell his land to Trump, being called ´an embarrassment to Scotland.´ Greed at its very worse!

Janet Jackson last recorded in 2008, and it was starting to look like maybe she was done. Last week she announced on Twitter her new single will be ´No Sleep´ adding “I hope u enjoy this as much as we enjoyed creating it for u.” Janet worked with the production team that goes back to 1986. She also announced a 36 date US tour, with plans to come to Europe in 2016.

‘Woody’ packs them in for The Alzheimers Association

ONCE AGAIN, in the restaurant El Alto La Dolores, Woody delighted guests, who filled the dance floor from the very first song. A very accomplished singer/guitarist, he helped attract 184 people to the latest charity fundraising night at El Alto La Dolores. The Restaurant owners donated another Mediterranean Cruise, as 1st prize in the raffle, and the fantastic sum of 1,366€ was raised for The Alzheimers Association. Matilda Sanchez, from AFA, was overwhelmed by the number

of people present, and their generosity. She thanked them, and explained what AFA does, and how important donations are for them. Woody will be back at El Alto La Dolores, in Guardamar, on 5th August, when the restaurant and its organisers will be raising funds for The Children’s Care Home in Elche. Tickets are available from the Restaurant, Post Room Benijofar, or The Card Place in Benimar. 10€ buys you a good 2 course meal and the best in entertainment, and tickets do sell out very quickly.

Hi Aunty, I KEEP losing the small icon for the computer speaker which means I have no sound. This icon is on the bottom row right hand side next to the internet icon. Only way I find to retrieve it is to system restore. Incidentally it is only recently that this problem has happened. Your advice would be much appreciated. Regards, Ray Aunty says: This can be one of two reasons. Firstly, although you say you have no icon, you do not say if you still have sound. So this may simply be down to the icon being switched off. You may be using some program that keeps turning this icon off. Assuming you are using Windows 7: Click on the start menu, and type “volume” Windows 7 search should display a matching result: Click on the link labelled “Show or hide volume (speaker) icon on the taskbar” Control Panel will open, and show the “Turn system icons on or off” screen. The second system icon listed is “Volume”.

Select the Volume’s dropdown menu, and change its value to “On” Click “OK” to confirm and close the Control Panel The second issue could be that the drivers the PC keeps downloading are not compatible or not installed correctly, so you lose the icon as your audio drivers are not installed correctly. It may be that Windows has decided to install its own drivers, which do not work fully, rather than use your manufacturer’s drivers. If you know what your audio system is, go to the manufacturer’s website and download the correct drivers for your audio device.

Hi Aunty Virus, HELP! I have a Toshiba satellite on windows 8.1. Recently my Firefox reduced itself to a small page. I did all the usual display settings and adjustments, to bring it back to full page, but the changes won’t stay. My other browser is CHROME [ I don’t like] & Outlook Express, both run fine in full page. I have downloaded Firefox three times, and get the same result. Any ideas? Normally I would say if Firefox is not saving its windows and zoon sizes, then it sounds like a corrupted file, but a reinstall should have sorted this out. Have you tried a “reset” of Firefox, or tried Firefox in “Firefox safe mode” It could be an add.on you have that is causing the problem. Suffixes

THE FORCE of logic tells me that we must move on to suffixes today although I daren’t even look at how many there really are. I THINK for now we’ll just stick to one or two common ones if that’s alright with you. In Spanish there are things called “diminutives” which make things smaller, and “augmentatives” which make things bigger. For example, “mesa” means table, whilst “mesita” means “little table”, which could also be a side table or a coffee table. An alternative to this “ita” ending is “illa”, and we also have a “mesilla de noche” a bedside table, or as I rather like to call it – “a little table of the night”. The same process works with masculine words – for example “papel” is a sheet of paper, “papelito” a little piece of paper. I don’t remember ever hearing “papelillo”, but we do have “cigarillo” (cigarette) and “mercadillo” (street market), diminutives of “cigarro” (cigar) and “mercado” (market). Diminutives of all kinds are used when addressing children, who may be told to sit on their “sillita” and eat their “comidita” from their “platito”. Some parents do this to almost every other word which can be rather irritating. We do a similar thing in English when we add the ending “y”, particularly to animal words when talking to children, although this is frowned upon these days. We might say “horsey” which would be “caballito” or “piggy” – “cerdito”. These words can also refer to young animals, such as “gatito” which means kitten. Different regions in Spanish have different diminutives. In my former home in Asturias, they ended words with “-ín” and “-ina”. So, whereas the standard word for a little dog is “perrito”, in Asturias it is “perrín”. Standard Spanish

says “camita” for little bed, in Asturias it is “camina”. In neighbouring Cantabria they add “-uca” to words. People from there call the region affectionately “mi tierruca” my “little land”. In Murcia this is replaced with “-ico” and “-ica”. Here people say “espera un momentico” – “wait a little moment”. The same sort of thing happens with “augmentatives”, although these are not used quite so extensively. A typical “augmentative” is “-on” for masculine and “-ona” for feminine. As well as making things sound bigger, these endings often add an extra meaning to a word. An example which comes to mind is the difference between “soltera” (a single woman) and “solterona” a good old-fashioned “spinster”. “Silla” (chair) we have already seen reduces to “sillita”, but can also expand to a “sillón” (armchair). In this instance it also changes gender. As you can see this is a very broad subject and not one that lends itself easily to following rules. It does add a great deal of colour to the language though as many different nuances, such as endearment or even sarcasm, can be expressed by playing with the endings of words. To illustrate how much colour suffixes can bring to the language, we can look at the ending “azo”. This often refers to a hit or strike with something. A “portazo” is the slam of a door, “guantazo” a hit with a glove, whilst “taconazo” is the strike of a heel. The same suffix also means large though, as I well remember people commenting on my daughter’s “ojazos azules” when she was knee-high to a grasshopper.

The Lions find a good home for over 400 ducks AFTER ALMOST three years of loving care and attention the former Torrevieja Costa Lions Club members have parted company with the 400 plus ducks who competed in the first ever duck race to be held in Spain in September 2012. by Keith Nicol The Ducks had been especially imported from the United Kingdom with a view to holding an annual duck race in the Torrevieja area. However, after the Lions Club closed down earlier this year, the ducks needed a good home, to continue with their fund raising activities. After much searching including on Facebook, the Lions believe they have found the perfect solution. Liesl Cavender who, for many years, supported the Lions, along with her husband Richard, contacted Janette Bennett to enquire if the local animal charity S.A.T.S. would be suitable to look after the ducks. After some discussion everyone agreed

that S.A.T.S. would indeed be eminently suitable and this weekend the ducks raced over to Liesl on their way to their new home at S.A.T.S. Hopefully S.A.T.S. will now quack on and set the ducks to work, raising funds for their own charity. On their one and only race, back in 2012, the ducks raised over 3,500€ for the Lions who donated all the funds to a young boy from Formentera del Segura who was in much need of medical treatment. The Lions wish S.A.T.S every success and The ducks raised over 3,500 euros for the Lions hope that they have many quacking fund raising activities.

New CD Torrevieja signings

Football’s back on Monday ON PAPER at least, CD Torrevieja’s new signings bode for an exciting season ahead for 2015/16.

On Monday evening, July 13th, the club’s first training night takes place, along with an open trial for visiting hopefuls from the UK and around Spain. The session kick’s off at 7.30 in the Nelson Mandela Stadium and everyone is invited to watch the session for free. With transfer window open until the end of August, although money does not change hands between teams at this level of play, as player’s contracts are usually just for one season, a number of new additions have been added to the team. The first addition is the quick footed lefty Luis Carlos Martin Asensio “Luis Carlos”, a Torrevieja lad who played for Torrevieja during 2012-2013. He returns ‘home’ from Novelda CF, where he helped them gain promotion to 2nd Division 2B. One very welcome defensive addition is with central defender David Rives Gambín “David

Rives”, who has missed much of the last two seasons due to his studies and family business. His main characteristics are in his cleaver passing game, good positional sense and his dominance in the air, being a tad shy of 6’6” at 1.89 tall. David Rives has played for a number of 2B teams. The player left in Vega Baja as a cadet of 15 to join Espanyol, where he played until the first youth year when he joined Atletico Madrid youth, where he spent two seasons until he went to Atletico Madrid “B”, playing for their second team. He then joined Burgos at the age of twenty-two before moving in 2007-08 up north to the Galician side of Ourense; playing twenty matches. In 2008-09 he went to Marbella for two years before joining his last team, Cacereno, and now CD Torrevieja. Another left sided player joining the club is Eduardo Bernabeu Mesas “Edu Mesas” from

BBQ and Bowls at Javea! ON SATURDAY evening over 50 bowlers celebrated American Independence Day with a BBQ and bowls competition at the Inn on the Green. The dress code for the evening was anything red, white or blue and as our members dug deep into their wardrobes to oblige. The bowls competition was a triples event with each team playing three other teams over six ends and just two teams completed the evening with three wins. In second place was Dee Hamilton, Felicity Jenkins and Sue Kent and the winners, with a better shot difference, were Ritva McAuliffe, Dave Ings and Chris Evans. During the prize presentation we were pleased to announce that Jenny Rich, our Club Captain, has nominated Cancer Care as the beneficiary of this years’ Captains’ Charity. We also announced that the Iberian Open, scheduled to start on Wednesday 2nd September, will have prize money in excess of 3000€! The winners will receive 200€ in the Singles, 400€ in the Pairs, Triples and Rinks plus a 500€ bonus in the Aussie Pairs. Monte Mentals Walking Football

WHAT WAS at first considered by many as a quick fad, or a bit of a joke, have seen the sport of Walking Football grown from strength to strength in the region. Less than nine months ago, a group from the Full Monte, the CD Montesinos International Supporters Club decided to start an over 50’s walking football activity, which has grown and grown in both the number of players and stature. The Walking Footballing ‘Monte Mentals’ held their first end of season dinner that attracted 51 players, WAGS and friends to Rincon Miguel’s Restaurant, Los Montesinos, on 30th June. A raffle was held to bolster club funds for the next season, with the first session starting on the 15th September at 10. Every end of season dinner has its awards ceremony and for Monte Mentals it was no different, although, similar to the good humour that is evenident at all games, these had a lighter edge to the awards. Howard Yeats was awarded “Diving Expert 2015”: Bryan Jones the “Running Man” award; Peter Elliot because of his psychedelic kit changes “Fashion Man of the Year”: Paul Carter “Goal Hanger” 2015: Baz Walker the “Who me ref” award and last but not least for his gentle, kind treatment of his opponents on the pitch, big Harry Richmond, from north of the border was awarded the “SEE YOU JIMMY” award for fair play. To his great surprise and delight, ‘Montestan’ was given a trophy and some goodies from the players in appreciation for his efforts on their behalf and his work for them. Stan then thanked all of them especially Howard and Mike Green for their essential support in making the club so successful and confirming that the Manchester City Community Walking Footballers would be coming over to play them in October.

Honda CR-V

“IT’S SURPRISING how large the CR-V is if it’s correctly packed,” smirks my wife as we head away from Suffolk.

SHE’S A cheeky girl sometimes. I had spent ages loading the Honda for our trip away but only minutes into the journey Harriett (3) and Heidi (1) were busy helping themselves to the provisions for our self-catering break. My wife was keen to nip this in the bud on our return journey. And of course she did by loading the vehicle herself. I’m not complaining though. It gave me a rest! I must say though that this 2WD SUV always surprises me. It must be the third or fourth time I have had the privilege of driving this model and this version is by far the best of them all in my opinion, and not just because my wife can load it better than I can. You see, this version is a diesel example and its 1.6-litre is claimed to return over 60mpg. Despite very careful light-footed driving I have only been able to see it return 54mpg. That could be due to the amount of luggage we are carrying. Anyway, this is still a very respectable figure for such a large vehicle, and means it will easily travel 600 miles on a full tank. Equipped with both cruise control and a speed limiter it is easy to drive sedately. Travelling all the way to Suffolk gives me ample opportunity

to put it through its paces. Driving rain and heavy winds are certainly challenging but the CR-V takes it all in its stride. The six speed manual box is a little clunky, but very precise, so no complaints. The front seats have ample lumbar support too, which is very welcome especially when staying in a holiday cottage that has the most uncomfortable beds I have come across for some time giving me a prolonged and persistent backache. “... but more padding on the actual seat would be beneficial over a long journey,” suggests my wife. The CR-V has an enormous boot so we can travel with our tandem pushchair and still have plenty of room in the back for our two daughters and luggage. The useful rubber cover inside the boot means that no matter how filthy the pushchair is the inside of the boot remains clean, as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. It helps that there is a roof mounted mirror that lets the driver and passenger to check on the rear occupants (which is how we saw the antics of our daughters in the first place). The chunky tyres cope well with off-roading, not that I was expecting to do much of this, but in this part of the world there are a surprising number of potholes especially when approaching the plentiful free car parks near the coast such as at Aldeburgh and Walberswick. My wife and children would prefer

softer suspension to soak up the bumps in such situations. The wing mirrors fold electrically and when reversing they drop automatically, if near a kerb, which is extremely helpful so that you don’t clip the kerb, not that it matters much with such large wheels. There is also a useful camera for reversing, which appears in the central display. It’s equipped with all the usual mod-cons including air conditioning, all round electric windows and, much to my wife’s pleasure, heated front seats as you can also see in the video at testdrives.biz. Pearlescent paint, a £500 option, really sets this vehicle off and even those in much more expensive Range Rovers can’t help but take a second look. It’s a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde vehicle too because one minute it will be happily pottering around the quiet Suffolk country lanes and the next minute it will just as competently be travelling at speed in the outside lane of the motorway regardless of wind conditions. Its adaptability makes it an impressive family vehicle.
