POWER GIANT Iberdrola has again come under fire from angry Costa Blanca customers stung by massive bills and inflexible contracts. One couple was faced with an 840€ bill days before Christmas, while another found a ‘special offer’ contract left them paying more for electricity because of hidden costs. And they want to publicise their experiences via RTN to discover if other Iberdrola customers have similar horror stories regarding the utility company – which also owns Scottish Power in the UK. Pensioners Charles and Anna – they asked not to use their real names – discovered their bank had paid an 840€ bill on 17th December; their normal monthly charge at their La Nucia home is between 150€ to 200€. They said the unwanted jump came at a time when Anna was seriously ill and they had moved extra cash into their account for any sudden emergency. Jim Kershaw with a handful of bills

THE WORLD was a poorer place this week as two giants of music, film and theatre, passed away. Ironically both David Bowie and Alan Rickman were aged 69 and had lost battles with cancer. Back in the mists of time, JT used some of his hard earned pocket money to buy his first ever Bowie single ´Starman´, after seeing the glam rocker on the legendary Top of the Pops in 1972. The seven inches of vinyl did sterling service – it´s still stored away somewhere. Over the years successive Bowie albums found their way into the record collection and have since been replaced with CD versions. There are 24 of them and none is given the opportunity to collect dust. Alan Rickman carved himself a solid gold reputation as a classic actor. As the news broke about his untimely passing, everyone at RTN Towers quickly remembered his roles as a villain (the Harry Potter and Die Hard films) – but his career and talents were much more impressive. Penning a quick obituary to beat deadlines, it was comforting to see the many romantic parts he played. In real life, he met his wife when they were both in their teens in 1965…they married in 2012. The word ´shock´ is again on RTN´s front page this week and a certain electricity company is to blame. In the scheme of things, they are not the worst cases in the world but illustrate how the underdog is always in peril of a very different form of giant.

Throughout Monday, the number of patients arriving at the A&E department continued to increase, and, by nightfall, there were 53 patients, in cubicles, sitting in the waiting rooms and in beds in the corridors, waiting to be sent up to the wards. This was despite the hospital management having taken the decision, at noon, to open part of the U-25 emergency overspill ward, and speed up the routine discharge process, to clear the ‘log jam’ which had been developing since last Friday. Last Friday, 418 patients were processed by Santa Lucía and Rosell hospitals. On Saturday,

432 were treated, and on Sunday, 360 people passed through A&E. The three days saw an 11% increase in patients, compared with previous weekends, and, by Monday morning, some patients had been awaiting admission to the wards for more than 24 hours. Management then gave the order that those responsible for the medical and surgical services should fast-track the discharge process for people who were just in-patients while they were waiting for test results and whose condition was not serious. The unions have criticized this measure on the grounds that, in some cases, patients will be forced to go back to the hospital within a few days. A spokesman for the hospital management stated on Tuesday that the situation was expected to return to normal shortly, with patients no longer waiting in the corridors.

MAN HELD ON SUSPICION OF KILLING FATHER THE SON of a man found dead in Torrevieja is being held on suspicion of being involved in the death.

The suspect alerted the emergency services saying that his father had suffered a heart attack, but he was held by police for questioning because the body was found with “clear signs of violence” and had been involved in a violent altercation in the house itself. The deceased man (65) and his son are Swedish nationals who have been living in Torrevieja for about a month. The incident occurred in a house located on Calle Santander. . Guardia Civil officers and SAMU ambulance staff entered the house, where they found the lifeless body of the man who had “bruises, scratches and an injury to the back of the head.”

The Civil Guard breaks up car gang THE GUARDIA Civil moved in on Wednesday to dismantle an international gang who specialised in stealing luxury cars to order.

Those who were arrested were of Bulgarian, Russian and Chechen origin and exported the cars from Spain with false documents and sold them in other countries, with the USA and Europe being the main markets. The organization had a number of special devices that could bypass alarm systems and start cars in just 20 seconds. Investigators lo-

cated this equipment in underground garages where they also discovered equipment for making false plates, documentation and software to encode cars and change their data. The raid followed an investigation by a group of agents to identify those responsible for this international organisation that was swindling tourists vacationing in Spain. The investigation was launched after a tip from Interpol because they were receiving complaints about cars sold in several countries such as the USA, Germany, France and the UK.

Princess’s trial begins

by CAROLINE TYSZKA THE TRIAL of Spain’s Princess Cristina, who is accused of tax fraud, began this week in Mallorca. The Princess, aged 50, is charged, along with her husband Iñaki Urdangarin, of defrauding the Spanish tax authorities, although both deny any wrong-doing. The trial, which started on Monday, also involves sixteen other defendants who are accused of helping to embezzle millions of euros in public funds, particularly from the Valencia region and the Balearic Islands, using a non-profit sports foundation called Noos. The legal team for one of the defendants, Diego Torres, asked the court to call King Felipe and his elderly father, Juan Carlos, to the witness stand in February, when the testimonies begin. Cristina is the first royal to be charged in a criminal case since the death of Franco in 1975, although her legal team had asked that she be dropped from the list of defendants in exchange for a reduced penalty of an administrative fine. However, as the charges had been brought against the Princess by a private party (who can act as prosecutors under Spanish law), namely the anti-corruption group Manos Límpias, their representative argued that letting Cristina off would “prejudice Spanish justice and the crown.” Outside the court, in Palma, Mallorca, people gathered, waving Republican flags and a Catalan independence flag, as the tax fraud trial began. The protestors shouted and jeered at the couple as they left the courtroom together, following a 13 hour session. The investigation, which has taken more than five years, accuses Cristina of two counts of tax fraud, with a possible sentence of up to eight years in prison, if convicted. Her husband faces a longer sentence, possible twenty years, as he is charged with money laundering and forgery. It is anticipated that the trial will run for 6 months, possibly concluding in June.

maritime surveillance work, primarily for the control and inspection of ﬁshing activities but also any issues relating to the conservation and protection of ﬁshery resources.

Continued from front page CHARLES SAID: “What we are most concerned about is some other poor old couple who might not have the money in their bank and could have been cut off. “It took me a long time to get through to Iberdrola and when I did all I wanted to know was how many units we consumed in December. The man said he couldn’t tell me because we had a new smart meter fitted and the information went straight through to the office,” he said. “He suggested going to the bank and stopping the payment and Iberdrola would accept six monthly payments of 140€ per month – plus the monthly bill. I said it was a pretty hefty bill but as it had already been paid to leave it.” SHOCK Anna added: “It was a very big shock – and it is the principle of the thing; how they can say ‘you owe us this much’ and take it but not tell us how much we used. “If you buy a pair of shoes and take them home and the shop suddenly says you owe 200€; you would not have bought them in the first place. “This was the straw that broke the camel’s back...you expect a variation in bills but this was just ridiculous.” It appears that the change to a smart meter prompted the inflated bill and earlier in the year the couple had merely paid standing charges for a couple of months through a normal direct debit arrangement. “We didn’t pay because they didn’t take it.” Jim Kershaw was ‘cold called’ in 2014 and asked if he wanted a new contract which gave 10% savings. He said: “Foolishly, I signed it.” The change cost 10€ but it was only later he discovered the discount was only on power actually consumed and not across the whole bill. INCREASE Jim, who lives in Moraira, said he also discovered that the services and protection (insurance) part of his bill increased suddenly rose from a couple of Euros to 12. “It is like a mortgage company giving a customer insurance protection without them asking for it,” he said. “I find it abysmal that a multi-national organisation finds it necessary to resort to these devious methods of obtaining extra revenue by exploiting pensioners.” He said the discount worked out at around 5€ a month but the increase in the service charge to 12€ left him out of pocket. “It is the principle of the thing.” Jim said the discount period had now ended. Iberdrola offered a new contract but would require engineers to visit his home. “I just said I didn’t want anyone near my house!” He said because of the extra costs his average daily cost for electricity had risen from 2€ a day to 2.4€. “How widespread is this? I don’t understand the latest bills because there is no discount but they still whack on this protection charge,” said Jim. “It surprises me that this company is not properly regulated and someone at a top level has decided to instigate a money making scheme like this.”

Actor Alan Rickman dies ACTOR ALAN Rickman, one of the greats of British stage and screen, died yesterday (Thursday) aged 69 after losing a battle with cancer.

Best known in recent years as a ´baddie´, he was known for his distinctive resounding voice and won new legions of young fans as Professor Severus Snape in the Harry Potter ﬁlms. However, he became a regular on the big screen after playing the villain against Bruce Willis in Die Hard – a part he won after just two days in Tinseltown. He made an absolutely outrageous Sheriﬀ of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of

Thieves, winning a BAFTA, and was a truly frightening Rasputin and won a Golden Globe for the role in Rasputin: Dark Servant of Destiny. But he did play softer more romantic roles, including ﬁlms like Truly, Madly, Deeply with Juliet Stephenson, Sense and Sensibility and Love, Actually. A RADA graduate and member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, he was described as a man of true talent and wicked charm. The actor himself famously said: “Talent is an accident of the genes, and a great responsibility.” He also admitted: “I do take my work seriously…and the way to do that is not to take yourself too seriously.”

Municipalities to pool services by IAN ASKEW

THE MUNICIPALITIES of Cartagena, La Unión, Torre Pacheco and Fuente Álamo have initiated a procedure for pooling services such as the ﬁre service, which will also create central purchasing for supplies of works and allow them to seek more favourable regional funding arrangements. To do this, they are required by the Federation of Municipalities and Provinces to institute implementation of section two of the Autonomy Statute, which provides for the creation of county authorities. The agreement to start this procedure was endorsed on Tuesday morning by the mayors of Cartagena, José López, La Unión, Pedro López, Fuente Álamo, Antonio Jesús García Conesa, and Torre Pacheco, Antonio León, at a

meeting in Cartagena. They had all complained of inequalities suffered by their municipalities regarding financing. “We cannot go on like this. We cannot increase, or even maintain the services we provide for our citizens,” said Jose Lopez, Mayor of Cartagena. “We suffer from financing in which there is a tendency to centralize everything in Murcia, while the Campo de Cartagena accounts for 16% of land, 26% of the population and 33% of the regional GDP. At present, we receive only 8% of regional investment, according to data from 2012.” And Mayor of Fuente Álamo, Antonio Jesús García Conesa added: “This is to improve municipal financing, and make economies of scale by sharing services. We are seeking a new model of regional financing.” One example is the fire service.

Antonio León, commented that his municipality “always ends up among the last in the distribution of municipal ﬁnancing. Therefore we have to claim what should be ours by right, and also form this consortium to collaborate on services they may be cheaper.” The four mayors said that other

municipalities would be welcome to participate in the consortium, in due course. The municipalities that have joined the initiative are controlled by PSOE (Fuente Álamo and La Unión), the Independent Party, (Torre Pacheco), and a coalition between PSOE and Ciudadanos (Cartagena).

David said, “We had three lines, all Lucky Dip tickets, and as Carol called out the numbers, I realised the first line matched up one by one. We must have checked it another 10 times or more, and then just sat in silence for what felt like five minutes.” Mr Marin, who works for a company fitting specialist equipment for the elderly and Mrs Marin who works at the local chemist say that they will take early retirement as well as looking for ways to help their community which has been badly affected by the recent floods. The second winning ticket holder has not been identified at the time of going to press which means that out there somewhere is a ticket worth £33 million just waiting to be checked.

BROADCASTER MAKES BOWIE FAUX PAS AS THE nation woke to the news that David Bowie had passed away on Monday morning, one newsreader was clearly not fully with it. Heart FM presenter, Fiona Winchester, began reporting the daily news and was covering the story but, instead of announcing the death of Bowie, she said “David Cameron has died.” Immediately realising her mistake she corrected it to David Bowie but if she had hoped only a few noticed her mistake she was in for a shock, as the international media and social media became a ﬂurry of online activity about the major faux pas.

What’s in a name?

THE INFANTA CRISTINA is no more - at least in terms of Torrevieja’s sports stadium. While the princess has not been found guilty of any crime, Torrevieja’s Mayor has decided she is already guilty of ´wrongdoings´. It means the Infanta Cristina Sports Palace will be simply renamed ‘Palacio de los Deportes de Torrevieja’, as the name of the major sports pavilion. The change is the decision of the current government led by the Greens and PSPV-PSOE . The pavilion was inaugurated with the name of the Infanta on 1st September 2000 and cost 9 million euros.

Region needs rain METEOROLOGISTS ARE expressing their concern as the below normal rainfall continues to cause drought problems in Spain. Whilst the north western areas of Spain have been hit with storm after storm, the divide between north and south is significantly different, and particularly when it comes to levels of rainfall. The month of November recorded lower than average rainfall for areas such as Aragón, Cataluña and Andalucía, with the Valencian region also desperately needing rain, according to the State Meteorology Agency of Spain. December saw a few isolated showers for some in the region, but this did very little to make up the deficit from the previous month, with January figures not looking any more promising. Barcelona has received under 2mm (0.08 inches) of rain from the new year to 11th January, whereas the

monthly average should be 31mm (1.22 inches). Meanwhile, Vigo, in southern Galicia, has received 325mm (12.80 inches) of rain in the same 11 days, which is three and a half times the January

average of 91mm (3.60 inches). The reservoir at Orcheta, which used to be a full water deposit, is now almost dry and barren looking, although forecasters are predicting a good downpour for the Marina Baixa imminently.

Alicante-Elche airport enjoys record year DURING 2015, El Altet, the provincial airport, received 10.5 million passengers and recorded the best year in its history. It exceeding by half a million the previous best annual data recorded, which was obtained in 2014, showing an increase of 5.1% in passenger traffic. And it highlights the growth in domestic traffic, which increased by 9.1% and recorded 1,266,973 passengers. However the international traveller remains the majority, registering 9,296,271 travellers, growing by 4.5% during 2015, compared with the previous year. The breakdown by nationality for international traffic was led once again by travellers from the United Kingdom, with 4,420,453; followed by Germany with 742,247; Norway, with 661,052; Holland, with 637,573; Belgium, with 541 831 and Sweden with 405,175 travellers. In terms of operations, the Alicante-Elche Airport handled a total of 74,084 flights during 2015, representing an increase of 3.5% over 2014. The cargo section has increased by 36% over the previous year and recorded 3,587 tonnes of goods transported through the airport. December 2015 also recorded significant growth of 16.9% in passenger traffic that resulted in 608,243 travellers counted, a record figure, and the highest ever recorded for the month.

THE CASE which involves Sean Connery’s wife being accused of fraud has seen many ex-councillors accused now pleading guilty to town planning crimes. RTN reported in November that the former mayor of Marbella, Julián Muñoz, and six ex councillors, were accused of profiting from various planning irregularities including from the former home of the Connerys. Called “Goldfinger”, the case has seen prosecutors allege that Micheline Connery, aged 86, aided and abetted in a complex operation to defraud the Spanish Treasury of nearly £5.5 million in 2006 by creating fictitious transactions to hide the profits from the sale of their villa “Casa Malibu.” Following the sale in 1999, the house was torn down, and more than 70 flats, sold for an estimated £45million, were built on the site, despite regulations stipulating only five flats could be built there. In court on Monday Mr Muñoz and six former councillors pleaded guilty and signed an agreement with the prosecution. Cathy, who was only 59 and leaves a daughter behind, sadly passed away in the early hours of Thursday 7th January, following a long battle with illness. Many will know Cathy as being the sub-editor at the Costa Blanca News for over 25 years where she had started as an oﬃce junior, but she also had many friends from her days as a Thomson’s Representative right back to the mid 70’s. The funeral, which was held on Friday 8th January at the Villajoyosa crematorium, was unsurprisingly full, with standing room only, as the community gathered to say a ﬁnal farewell to Cathy, a lady who, once you had met her, left you feeling loved and listened to, no matter how busy she was.

Help find Mike AN INTERNATIONAL plea has gone out to help ﬁnd Mike Jack Bateman, who was last seen in August last year in Spain. Mike, who is 30 years old, began hiking the Camino trail in Bilbao, Spain, in the summer of 2015, but has not been heard from since, with his family and friends becoming very concerned for his safety. Family members say that there is no record of Mike using his bank card and that he does not have a mobile phone or use the internet, so establishing his whereabouts has proved impossible. RTN spoke with Mike’s mum, Lorna, who said “Mike is my middle son and we are a very close family. We just want to know that he is alright.” On 12th January, the family had a meeting with the British police, and passed all the information on to them. This was then immediately sent to Interpol to be circulated throughout Europe. The British Embassy in Madrid are aware of the search for Mike, and it is hoped that he can soon be located and the family can ﬁnally know that all is well. Lorna said “I moved to the UK in 1999 on my

own with my three boys ,so we have always been close, I am really worried and hope someone can say if they have been in contact with Mike on their travels.” Mike, who sounds South African, having spent the ﬁrst fourteen years of his life there, can also speak a little Spanish, and is described as very softly spoken, polite and gentle. When he left on his travels he only had a small backpack and family think that he may have headed for the south of Spain or the Canary Islands as he feels the cold. The Facebook page “help ﬁnd Mike” has had over 3 million hits and in the region of 40,000 shares, as many people around the world join in the search for the young man. Mike is described as being of slim build and walking with a limp due to injuries sustained last year. He is 6 foot 3 inches tall and may or may not have a beard. FUGITIVE ARRESTED

SHARP-EYED LOCAL police in Denia successfully arrested a Bulgarian fugitive wanted for fraud in Morocco after running a credit card and ATM scam. Oﬃcers were suspicious after spotting a luxury car ´for sale´ which appeared out of place in the street where it was parked and after making inquiries over the radio discovered there was an Interpol alert to arrest its owner. The suspect will be extradited back to Morocco where he faces imprisonment if found guilty of a number of oﬀences.

DAVID BOWIE, the superstar and chameleon of modern music, died of cancer on Sunday aged 69 – just two days after his birthday and the release of his final album ‘Blackstar’, said to be a “parting gift”. The singer was one of the most influential musicians of his era and passed away peacefully surrounded by his family after an 18-month battle with the disease. And such was the impact of Bowie’s influence on the world during a 51-year career, his death made headlines around the world. The BBC made it its lead story on Monday evening and gave over 20 minutes to the singer on its flagship 9pm broadcast. Social media also came alive. Stars and musicians like Sir Paul McCartney, Brian Eno, Brian May, Iggy Pop and Madonna all paid tribute to Bowie, and his massive influence on music, art and fashion. Fans across the globe also left messages,

telling how Bowie had touched their lives as “the Picasso of pop” – many saying the singer and his alter ego Ziggy Stardust had made it acceptable, even cool, to be different. Actor Simon Pegg posted a memorable message; writing: “If you feel sad today, just remember the world is over four billion years old - and you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie.” STUDIO According to the Sunday Times Rich List, Bowie was worth £135 million. He sold 140 million albums since his first in 1967 and released 111 singles – averaging more than two a year. He also made 25 studio albums and 51 music videos; also starring in full-blown feature films like ‘The Man Who Fell to Earth’, ‘The Hunger’, ‘The Labyrinth’ and ‘Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence’. At the Live Aid concert at Wembley in 1985, Bowie dedicated ‘Heroes’, another massive song, to “my children, your children, and children everywhere”. MARBELLA SQUATTERS EVICTED

NATIONAL POLICE officers evicted 70 squatters from abandoned properties in Marbella during the week. Over the period of just one hour on Tuesday morning over 20 police officers assisted by a group of security guards moved the squatters, including many families, from the Costa Estrella area. Court orders were issued to have the occupants removed as CajaMar, who own the properties, wished to sell off its abandoned properties. This was the third attempt to remove the squatters who have occupied the buildings for three years. Police officers evicted a total of 24 families, including 20 children who were of Moroccan and Spanish nationality, who will now be officially homeless.

Worries over ´shopping addiction´ by KEITH NICOL WITH THE Christmas season finished, it’s time now for those who were waiting for a bargain to let the proper shopping commence. However, that’s not good news for everyone, as Quirónsalud Torrevieja Hospital experts estimate that around 3% of the Spanish population, especially those with an average age of 40, are suffering from an impulse control problem which is called “shopping addiction” or “compulsion to buy.” This disorder affects two thirds more women than men. Dr. Miguel Sanchez, a specialist in psychology at the Quirónsalud Torrevieja Hospital, said: “The act of shopping itself is only the tip of the iceberg of a emotional issue that is rooted in the depths of the psyche of the sufferer.” The self-esteem of a person can be increased to 17% when purchasing certain consumer goods. It is these unplanned compulsive shopping trips for items that are not needed, especially for amounts that exceed their means, that are the characteristics that define a shopaholic.

According to Dr. Sanchez: “It is not the possession itself, but the momentary flash or rush experienced in making the business transaction and the reflection of certain products as a symbol of social status. “ In addition, this type of behaviour can ruin the economy of one person and damage their social, work and family aspects. During the sales period, the condition is emphasised even more as sufferers are more exposed. Wanting and needing are two terms that people with compulsive buying behaviours often confuse.” However there are ways to start ending an addiction. Dr. Sanchez continued: “First, you must seek help from the right people because it is essential that the person is aware of the serious problem that can hardly go away by itself. “Psychotherapy and assessment by the treating psychiatrist or other mental disorders will be essential if we are to ensure a successful outcome without a relapse. This is the only way to close a chapter.”

MAN PUT ON ICE

A SPANISH mother walked into her local police station and announced that she had murdered a man at the weekend. Dos Hermanas, near Seville, is coming to terms with one of their local business owners confessing to a murder, having told police she had killed a man and put him in the freezer at her ice cream shop Heladería Otoño. Officers initially thought the 44 year old mother was having a joke at their expense, although, when they attended the property, they did indeed find the body of a 62 year old man who had been reported missing around 24 hours earlier. Police say that there is no apparent link between the owner of the shop, and the dead man. The woman had yet to offer a reason for the murder, despite confessing to the crime.

Have you voted yet? WITH ONE week to go until the ITV National Television Awards in London, the public will decide if the Benidorm series can reclaim their “best comedy” title. On 20th January the NTA (National Television Awards) will take place at the O2 arena, hosted by Dermot O’Leary. The NTA are one of the most favoured accolades for winners to receive as they are decided entirely by the public and not by a panel of judges. With 288 awards being presented since it began in 1995, the results are watched by millions. The good news for those here on the Costa Blanca is that you can vote from Spain and there is still time, as voting doesn’t close until midday on Wednesday 20th January. Benidorm, series 7, has some stiﬀ competition for being the best comedy as seen on television in 2015 as the other nominations in the category are: Peter Kay’s Car Share; Not Going Out and Birds of a Feather. Luckily Mrs Brown’s Boys is not in the running this year as it has won the best comedy title for the past three years with Benidorm last winning in 2011. The glitzy ceremony will be packed full of stars, all hoping for that coveted trophy, with thousands of fans expected to be queueing for a glimpse of their favourite actors or presenters. There are 15 categories, which also include the best entertainment programme, drama and new drama. New drama is celebrating the best homegrown British drama for the past year, with Poldark facing oﬀ against the likes of Doctor Foster, Black Work, Humans and Fortitude. There is no doubt that Ant and Dec will receive at least one award, the question will be ‘how many this year’?

THE PERFECT RACE FOR WINE LOVERS A SCOTTISH city is set to host a 10k run where instead of runners being offered water at their rest stops they will be offered wine. Normally a run might seem the ideal event to prepare for and get fit, however the Glasgow fun run may see many struggle to pass the finishing post in a straight line. Every two-mile stop during the “easy trail”, runners, walkers or crawlers will be offered a different tipple from around the world. Organisers, TeamOA, say that although the route has yet to be finalised hundreds of people have already signed up for the race which will be held on 24th September 2016. A maximum of 600 – who must be aged over 18 - can be involved and the event will raise money for charity. Wayne Law, MD of TeamOA said: “We want to put the fun back into running and prove that you don’t have to be an elite race snake.”

Costa Blanca promotes sports tourism in Holland

THE COSTA Blanca Tourism Board is participating until Sunday January 17th at the Vakantiebeurs Toutirm Fair, in the Dutch city of Utrecht until Sunday. It is there to showcase the latest developments in the sector and also promote the Tour of Spain Cycle Race, La Vuelta, of which the final two days of racing will be held in the province in September 2016. The Provincial Council of Alicante is promoting sports tourism along with offering beaches, the interior region, culture and cuisine, of all 141 municipalities of the province. Deputy for Tourism, Eduardo Dolon said: “Holland is considered one of the most important markets in the sector and this tourism fair in Utrecht is an ideal showcase for the Costa Blanca. This year we will give special importance to sports tourism and two events of great importance such as the Tour of Spain and Tour of Valencia.” Vakantiebeurs represents a major opportunity to promote tourism to the Dutch market and the presence of the Costa Blanca Tourist Board has special meaning given the importance of the market and multiple air links with Dutch cities. The fair features 2,287 exhibitors with around 60,000 professionals visiting the show from 130 different countries.

Cabo Cervera sold for 11.3 M € CABO CERVERA HOTEL, located in La Mata, Torrevieja, has been sold for 11.3 million euros through its subsidiary Cevasa hotels. The buyer is the Benidorm Poseidon hotel group, trademark Devesa Hotels SLU, which manages six hotels, of three and four stars, in Benidorm and other parts of the province. In fact, the chain has already renamed the establishment as Hotel Playas de Torrevieja. The hotel was originally built as an apartment hotel and then refurbished. It is the most important hotel of the limited supply of Torrevieja hotels with 186 rooms overlooking the sea. It is also a regular venue for meetings and events in its lounges and dining space. The current management will remain in place for at least three more years. The same chain, which has three more hotels in Benidorm, one in the north of the province in Vall de Laguar and another in Biar, in 2006 bought the Campomar Hotel (now Hotel Playas de Guardamar), and is in the process of the renovation of its ﬁve hundred rooms by the sea. They also have plans to rescue a hotel in ruins in front of the beach in Elche at Arenales.

Another objective is to present local groups and associations to the residents so they are aware of the work that is being carried out on their behalf, along with giving residents the opportunity to work with and collaborate with these causes.

Cartagena’s historic city walls protected CARTAGENA’S MAYOR, José López insists that refurbishment of the Paseo del Muelle leave the City Walls visible. The mayor has made this a condition for the carrying out of the works ‘so that visitors arriving by boat to the city can see the walls’. Lopez, stated, on Wednesday, that the City Council has insisted on this condition for the reforms envisaged by the Port Authority for the waterfront promenade, to avoid destroying the views of the city walls, that date back to the time of Carlos III. “Therefore, the installation of a replica of a ship, with a children’s playground, was rejected,” he explained.

AS IF Torrevieja does not have enough political parties, a new one has been announced called ‘Proyecto de Centro Torrevieja’. The new party, Proyecto de Centro Torrevieja, is based upon taking the citizens of Torrevieja seriously and in moving forward with the promotion of the city. It was formed out of a desire to take the needs of the people seriously and not to live and govern through complaints, but to take charge of the city’s destiny by developing tools that give true freedom and true awareness of the acts of local government. They believe that, through their own actions, each person becomes an agent for positive change to build a more just, sustainable and happy Torrevieja. In this age of discontent, with the present pentapartito government having done little to take the city forward but to instead spend the majority of their time and effort dwelling on the past, the Proyecto de Centro Torrevieja aim to appeal to those who want to develop a meaningful life for Torrevieja, seeking virtue and growth, both in personal and social ways. In terms of a ‘meaningful life’, to them this is one in which individual efforts bear fruit and, in turn, contribute to a collective effort to build a better world for everyone; family, loved ones, society, country and the world in general. They see the city as one of citizens who understand the political system, the market and the economy and are dedicated to working together as a whole, where the sum of their actions

RESEARCHER RICARDO Ibáñez Pérez, of the Mare Nostrum Campus of International Excellence has confirmed, in his thesis, that physical activity influences people’s welfare. A study of more than 1,500 older people who were physically active in the region of Murcia has concluded that exercise and sport has improved their health, self-esteem and their perception of their body image. The doctoral thesis on the promotion of active aging has confirmed that physical activity and sport has a positive effect on the welfare of the elderly. Healthy sporting habits improve “the perception of selfesteem and body image of older people,” noted Ibáñez, who added that “it also contributes to the feeling that their health and welfare has improved. With age and a reduction in activity, physical capability and skills that can be enhanced by sport are lost”.

CARTAGENA’S TOURIST OFFICE RE-OPENS THE TOURIST oﬃce at Puerta de San José, in Cartagena, which has been closed since 2011, has ﬁnally re-opened.

The recruitment of four trainees has allowed this office to be staffed, it opened to the public for the first time on Wednesday. Opening hours will be between 10am and 2pm and from 4pm to 6pm during the week, and on Saturdays between 10am and 1pm. The office will also be refurbished with a series of photographs of all Cartagena’s city gates, on panels explaining its history.

Independence for Orihuela Costa I’M SURE that thousands agree with the sentiments expressed by “Disgruntled” in last week’s issue.

Orihuela Costa is rapidly resembling one of Mr. Cameron’s “sink estates” with building going on everywhere, despite so

many properties remaining empty. Very soon there won’t be a blade of grass to be seen. La Zenia has become a disgrace. The new “park” is a mass of weeds, overflowing litter bins and a ravine running down the middle to drain all surface water down

to the beach via the road, or should I say ‘the mud slick’. Clearly, the moron who designed the park knew nothing of the situation in La Zenia. Why oh why can’t there be a concerted effort made to secure independence for Orihuela Costa. Where are the aspiring

local politicians with the will and clout to at least TRY to make it happen. Until then we will continue to be second class citizens and Orihuela Council will continue to operate in their shambolic and corrupt way. Equally disgruntled, La Zenia.

Money can grow on trees! Why own teak? Teak in particular offers one of the best values and highest yields in the timber sector. It is a small niche segment of the timber industry and is managed by smaller, privately owned companies rather than by big institutional operators. While there is growing demand and decreasing supply for timber in general, the imbalance may be even more dramatic for teak. Rapidly developing nations including Brazil, India and China are some of the largest consumers of teak, ensuring that demand will continue to increase. Meanwhile, international legislation has banned or severely restricted harvesting of native teak in most countries, while an insufficient number of plantation programs have been established to replenish the supply of teak. Learn about your rights as per Spanish law.

DEAR LAWYER, I have a villa on the Costa Blanca. My neighbor has planted some very large trees, very close to my land, their roots are causing serious problems to my pool and septic tank, which are very expensive to repair. My neighbor does not want to take any action. Can I cut the roots? Could you advise us what to do? Dear reader, thank you for your enquiry. First of all, please note that the Spanish Civil Code itself partially regulates this situation in its Articles 591 and 592, which states (with some text re-arranged to aid translation): Article 591 trees cannot be planted near to another person’s property but only at the distance authorized by the rules or custom of the place, and in their absence, upto two meters from the boundary of a ﬁeld if the planting is tall trees, and 50 centimeters if the planting is of shrubs or small trees. Every owner has the right to ask that trees be uprooted that hereinafter are planted at a lesser distance from their property “ Article 592 If the branches of trees should extend over a neighboring property, garden or patios, or if the roots of the neighboring trees extend into the land of another person, the extent that they intrude into the neighboring property, could be cut by the owner within his property.” Therefore, in the case you mentioned, we understand that: If the trees are planted closer to your property than was is permitted by the rules (usually in the Town Hall rules); or in the absence of regulations, then closer than 2 meters, you can ask that the trees (Article 591) be uprooted, and that the owner plant them again at the right distance. Article 592 allows you to cut the roots that cross into your property, but you should be really careful, because if you do it improperly, this could aﬀect the stability of the tree, etc. If it can be proved that any damage to your pool and septic tank are due to the roots from the neighboring trees, we understand that you could claim against your neighbor to pay all costs related to the repair.

Also, we understand that this is what legally is known as continuing damage, therefore, the deadline for claiming begins from when the ﬁnal damage occurs. There are many court precedents regarding this possibility to claim for damages caused by roots or branches. To give a couple of examples, the Provincial Court of Alicante in June 4th 2013, and from the Supreme Court in a judgment dated 13th of October 2015. WHAT WE have seen over the last year is a one step forward 2 steps backward situation which has been extremely frustrating for 2015.

THE WORLD events throughout last year could not have been worse for investors and they are too many to list here but events around the world always seem to impact the markets very quickly. Even the greatest pessimist must admit to there being value in investing at the current moment in time. Let us just look at the FTSE 100: December 1999 saw an all-time high at 6930 then another high point in October 2007 of 6721 after various crashes and bounce backs. Right now it is hovering around the 5900 mark which is 15% below the 2015 high. Syria, Iraq, Russia, China, USA, North Korea are all probably going to hit the news in 2016 as well as weather problems, immigration, terrorism, currency devaluations are going to happen in 2016 – but surely there is a massive potential for investors wanting to get in now at what is a market position 15% lower than we were at 17 years ago. Companies are continuing to hold on to cash so if growth is not what is expected then at least higher than normal dividends should be paid, all of which adds to the returns for investors.

Response: If you have a screensaver option active, then this will put the screensaver mode on after a certain amount of time. If you have the “password” option selected, then every time you wake the screensaver, then it will ask for a password. So deselect the “password” option on the screen saver options screen. The other option is in the PCs power settings. You can set the power settings of PC and laptops so that they shut down the displays when not in use - saving power. So you can either turn this option off, or select a longer period of time before the power saving kicks in. YOu can also disable the password requires when the PC boots up also. For example : On your windows 10 Start menu window, right click at the Win logo > select Run option > in the Run box type netplwiz > OK > UN-check the box “users must enter user name and password to use this computer” > click OK > follow the prompts, then restart Win 10,and you will no longer be asked for a password when W10 boots up.

Hi Aunty Watching tv from a laptop via a hdmi cable, we do not get the full size screen. Is there something we can change to enable full size and if so please can you tell us how? Helen Response: When you connect a laptop to the TV via HDMI, the TV will just mirror what is on the laptop screen, but as the laptop screen and TV may not be the same “ratios” then displays will be different. So you must use your laptops graphic card settings to adjust the display on the TV output. Graphic settings can be access by right clicking on the desktop, and selecting the screen /graphics resolution option. But how exactly you do this will depend on which version of Windows you are using, and what graphics card and control software you have

 You may very well find yourself changing your mind about something this week as the pressure is on. You can blame astrological intervention in your next step, as Mars trines on Neptune, and new horizons are out there for you. Though in hindsight you would never have got involved at all, at least you have finally woken up and smelt the coffee. Though you may think that it is time for a change, you are so adept to your routines it may be hard to make the subtle changes that would make such a difference to you. Venus is currently in cahoots with Ceres and this brings you the absolute choice to do what you have to; hopefully following your feelings but not wasting any precious time! Mercury trines with Jupiter bringing both good luck and good fortune to your door. Whilst Mercury gives you the support you currently need this connection could bring you all that you desire; as long as you keep both hope and belief in balance and set your sights a little higher. Above all this is a time to be rewarded for what you really do deserve. Crab like pincers seem to be ready to give someone a very well deserved nasty nip, but please think of a more subtle way of showing your anger. With the Moon in opposition and Mars involved with Neptune it would be far better to put everything down to experience and then you can walk away finally with integrity intact and your head high. Now that you are not out there in the spotlight you can finally, deservedly, bask in the limelight of a job well done. This may very well be a time to have a good look around and to see where your next move could be; especially since the Sun enters into Aquarian time mid week and steers you towards pastures new in further appreciation of your talent. Mercury squares with Kora at the start of a busy week. Someone desperately needs your help right now but is afraid to ask for your advice. You have previously had your suspicions about them but now it is certain that, above all, the truth has to be told and further investigation will have to be done. You must instinctively take that vital first step! Miracle

WHEN I was told as a child that there were miracles I took it on board that I could ask for the guidance of these miracles whenever they were needed. Having recently come to live in London from New York, my parents divorced, and I was left living with my mother in a small bedsit in South Kensington. The house we lived in was full of students and single working people and I was happy that there was a large garden for me to play in, and a tortoise called Fred. I was trusted to have a key to the small room that very quickly became my home; which I proudly wore around my neck. I loved the independence that came with the sheer responsibility of partnering my mother. Mostly when I came home from school my mother was there and dinner was served by her. Now and then there was a note telling me that she wasn’t far away and would be home later, and that never worried me; and I learned how to make a jam (not jelly) and peanut butter sandwich if I got hungry. There was always the garden or black and white television, and I loved reading, especially the London Evening Standard. I got to work out that money was a problem because my mother seldom ate with me. Her excuse was that she had eaten earlier, but I figured it out that this wasn’t the case and that one economy that could be made was just to feed me and not herself. I soon changed that and faced my mother directly one evening. After that, at my insistence, we either both ate or neither of us ate.... and fortunately, we were never hungry! The school I was attending was a local Church of England primary school. It was there during my first scripture lessons that I first heard of miracles, and as a child I first learned how to kneel and to pray; although I was really angry with God because he hadn’t stopped my parents divorce and over our move from a big house to a small bedsit. It occurred to me that I needed a miracle for my mother. She had made a couple of television commercials to make money, namely one for the new machine washable Playtex bra, and another with the dour Molly Weir promoting Flash. Still to this day I can remember the entire and exact script for each product, and that was because I rehearsed and rehearsed my mother until she got it right. The Flash commercial was the first split screen advert. Whilst my mother was knee deep in suds because she had supposedly used another product, she was also trying to scrub a beige and black floor dressed in a beige outfit. Molly used Flash with her sponge mop on her black and white floor and appeared on set in a crisp white blouse. Still, as my mother said it did take us on a weekend together to Margate! One night I decided that it was time for a miracle and so I knelt on the polished lino by the side of the bed. I knew the drill, hands together, eyes closed, and I prayed that my mother would find the work that she needed that night, harder than any ten year old boy ever had. A couple of days later my mother collected me early from school, and she had had her hair done. We took the bus to Harrods and I went to see the wonderful pet department and we had afternoon tea in the restaurant. My mother had auditioned for a part in a Brian Rix farce, and she had got it. The production ran for 19 years throughout the West End but especially in the Whitehall Theatre. The bedsit was ditched for a two bedroomed flat, and I even got my own tortoise who I called Ike, and who loved eating tomatoes. I will never know whether it was the power of prayer that turned things around or my mother’s talents or my gift of being able to work with Spirit. I think that actually it was a touch of all three, and the power of Spirit became my way forward as much then as it is for me now. Oh! And if Playtex ever need a foley artist to voice over for their long line machine washable bra... I’m their man!

We didn’t get on until we started working in the Midlands and loathed the same boss. One ﬁne afternoon I was marching butch like down one side of the High Street and Master Winton was sallying forth down t’other wearing a Panama hat, tight Bermuda shorts and a vivid Hawaiian shirt - 2 Countries & an American State applied to the UN for an immediate name change. Mind you if the Mohicans got a gander at his recent hairstyle - the Last Of That Native American Nation would have moved to Canada and cultivated comb overs. The Dalester yelled “Ashley I want to talk to you NOW!” We went into a rough watering hole,the carpet kept changing pattern & color depending on how much blood had been spilt the night before. The only other customers were 6 surly looking navvies from the Auld Sod on a long liquid lunch – Uh-oh! Up to the bar I strutted and ordered loudly in a faux Irish accent “A pint of Guinness Paddy to be sure to be

sure” the barman sneered “To be sure my name is Nigel and I’m sure I come from Leighton Buzzard.” Dublin’s finest tried to wind Dale up as he sipped his Malibu with a paper umbrella jauntily sticking out of the glass - but he had a treasure trove of cheeky anecdotes which had ‘em in stitches, and not the normal ones the lads were used to either. Would you like to hear one of Dale’s Tales? Of course you would, you little sticky-beak. It concerns a married International footballer playing away from home,literally,with a wayward Worksop wench. The tryst occurred in his car late night, on a Nottinghamshire industrial estate – classy huh? At the apex of ardour a delivery van backed into the passion wagon making the air bags explode causing a nasty case of crushed nuts – sans the ice cream. The love-birds were locked ‘in flagrante’ for 3 hours until the fire brigade crowbarred them apart. However, it didn’t curtail our soccer stud’s stellar career – he was even offered alternative employment singing soprano with the Vienna Boys Choir.

by PATRICIA THOMPSON SUNDAY 10TH January saw Dennis Baer, one of the stars from The Cucaracha Club, being premiered in Torrevieja in March this year, make his ﬁrst appearance in the ITV series, Beowulf. In his native North East of England, Dennis, along with many of his actor friends, braved the cold, wet and wind in pursuit of their art. Dennis, Chad Nichols and Graham Robinson can’t wait to return to the Costa Blanca for the première and the next instalment of the story, codenamed, by those in the know, CC2.

Meanwhile, the three intrepid stars are cocka-hoop over their Cucaracha Club Calendars, featuring the ladies of the ﬁlm. Some people are saying that the pages of the 13 month 2016 Calendar are far too raunchy, but it seems to be going down well with all the gentlemen customers. The Beowulf star likes the March, November and Christmas models in particular. Chad likes January, March and the following January, and Graham likes February June and Christmas. NOW THAT One Direction have taken a hiatus from the business, the vultures are hovering overhead. Harry Styles has had plenty offers before their break, and the latest big ugly bird to swoop in on the young fella is Jay-Z. Harry would be wise to do his homework on him, as although he´s got a mega business going on with Def Jam records, already Kylie and Rita Ora have split from the US rapper. Jay Z said on a possible hook-up with Harry “I can get him working with the bigger artists, the biggest producers and have him as the biggest artist in the world.” HARRY! IN TWO weeks Eddie Redmayne will know if he´s won the best actor award for the lead role in The Danish Girl at the Screenwriters Guild, but from what surfaced about him last week he´s clearly still got his feet on the ground. He´s from London which meant he didn´t have to pay any rent when he was waiting tables trying to get acting work, and last week he revealed to GQ magazine “I get letters from people going to drama school who struggle to pay their rent, so that’s something I occasionally do for them. It’s impossibly expensive to live in London.” A gentleman and scholar! A WEE quirky one here, but firstly let me ask you a question. Divide the number of times a day you walk passed your fridge by the number of times you stop and open it? If the answer is 1, yes the number 1, you have a serious problem. Fridge wise, this time of year is especially difficult, and it’s just started to get a lot more difficult. Fridge-makers LG unveiled a self-opening one at tech fest CES, with the catchphrase ‘What is greatness?’ The fridge senses when a human is walking past and opens its door, revealing the goodies hidden within. Oh My God!

I REPORTED recently ´Baywatch The Movie´ was soon to be made, and also that they were yet to find the right female for the Pamela Anderson role of CJ Parker … until now. Kelly Rohrbach firstly told the media she was splitting from Leonardo Di Caprio, then that she would be donning the iconic red swimsuit! Quite some double whammy! The Hasselhoff role will be played by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson who said on social media “a pleasure welcoming Kelly to our Baywatch family, she’s a walking smoke stack ... she’s smart, tough and funny. Just the way we like ‘em!” Hummm?

THE COACHELLA Music Festival will take place in the California desert over two weekends this April. The event has quickly become unmissable, and the fact that Guns N´ Roses are to reform for the show makes it a very special moment in popular music. The original line-up last played in Buenos Aires in 1993 due to singer Axl Rose and guitarist Slash ﬁnding it impossible to work together. Their debut album “Appetite for Destruction,” in 1987, sold a record 18 million copies, and they instantly became the stadium band everyone wanted to book. Can they hold it together?

US COMEDY show Two and a half Men ran for twelve seasons from September ´03 to February ´15. The show became massively popular for many reasons, one being it’s rather risqué content around Charlie Sheen´s character Charlie Harper, whose misogynistic ways were quite outrageous. The risqué angle was amplified somewhat by the fact that one of the other characters, Jake Harper, was just 10 years old and lived with his dad in the same house as his uncle (misogynist-man) Charlie, and it’s the boy who played Jake who is the subject of today’s story. Angus T. Jones is now 22 years old and apparently earned a staggering $300,000 per episode. He played the part of Jake through to series 10, returning for a cameo in the series finale. He was spotted recently in Venice, California, looking nothing like his clean-cut on-screen persona, sporting a beard and glasses, and according to an eyewitness was friendly with everyone, taking selfies with a group in front of a restaurant. But it’s not all been plain sailing for the wee laddie. In November 2012 he surprised everyone posting a video on religious website ´The Forerunner Chronicles´ which stated “If you watch Two and a Half Men, please stop watching Two and a Half Men, I’m on Two and a Half Men and I don’t want to be on it! Please stop watching it! Please stop filling your head with filth!” He surely did! He apologised afterwards, but that’s a pretty mega meltdown going on there! In 2013 RIDLEY SCOTT was born in Tyne and Wear 78 years ago, now of course he is Sir Two and a Half Men creator Chuck Lorre Ridley Scott, given a knighthood in recognition of his work producing and said to ET Magazine about Jones´ rant “I directing movies. The lad from the northeast has won 9 major awards, can’t really disagree with him, the shows the stand-out two being Alien in ´79, and Gettysburg in 2011. Keeping spirits up by JACK TROUGHTON TORREVIEJA AND Albox hosts two evenings with spirits and a demonstration of mediumship this month with Robert McLernon and Paul Hamnett.

The Actors Studio needs you THE FUTURE of local amateur drama group “The Actors Studio” is looking very bleak at present due to dwindling members. This group, known for its unique comedy plays and sketches, is struggling to recruit new members, both acting and non acting. The group’s director and writer, David Whitney, is extremely saddened by the lack of new members which, at present, is at an all time low. To thrive it is imperative that the group recruit new members in order to proceed with a new show. Past simple tense: ir and ser

There are enough irregular verbs in the simple past tense to keep us going for a good long while, but it doesn’t make sense to go through all of them. That is what you have that big verb book for - and you thought it was to prop up sideboard! However, a few more would be useful. So far, we have tackled dar (to give) and hacer (to do, to make) which allows us to ask a key question: “¿Qué hiciste ayer?” “What did you do yesterday?” Absolutely basic is the past tense form of the verb “ir” to go. Believe it or not in some tenses this verb manages to behave itself, but in the past simple to simply runs riot. There’s really no excuse at all, the only redeeming feature being that it is used so commonly some of it should stick eventually. Before we go any further, here it is: fui fuimos fuiste fuisteis fue fueron All of these words can be translated by “went” (which incidentally is a very strange word in English to have as the past tense of “to go”). Here are some examples, just to make sure you’re with it: “Fui a la tienda” (I went to the shop); “Fuimos en tren” (We went by train) – not to the shop, these are disconnected examples. “¿Adónde fuisteis?” (Where did you (plural) go?) Notice that in this example the word meaning “where” is actually “where to” – adónde. When you hear native Spanish speakers say this, they sometimes either miss

the “a” out, or give it very little emphasis so that it sounds like “¿Dónde fuiste?” This is a bit like us say “Where d`you go?” instead of “Where did you go?” which we would probably assure foreigners that we always say. “Ir” is very often used in the reflexive form “irse” (to go away). The difference in meaning is sometimes rather slight, with the reflexive form adding emphasis. “Me fui a casa a las doce” (I went off home at 12 o’clock”). Now comes the other really strange thing about the past simple of “ir”, which is that it is identical to the past simple of “ser”. How can this be? I hear you ask. Well, it’s really simple (haha) and impossible to confuse. By way of illustration, earlier on today I was listening to a song I like very much which contains these lines: Si alguna vez fui bello y fui bueno (if I was ever beautiful and good) Si alguna vez fui sabio en amores (if I was ever wise in love) Si alguna vez fui un ave de paso, lo olvidé pa’ anidar en tus brazos (If I was ever a bird passing over, I forgot this to nest in your arms). Now you can see the sort of stuff I listen to while I’m working - but the point is that you would never mistake the word “fui” here for “went”: it has to mean “was” from the verb “ser”. We could elaborate on this more, but time is up for today. The song, incidentally, is “Lucía” by one of my idols Joan Manuel Serrat.

Council calls for dog Fiestas de San owners to identify Antonio Abad pets with a microchip by KEITH NICOL ANIMAL PROTECTION Councillor, Carmen Morate, has made an appeal to all dog owners to ensure that their pets can be identified with a microchip and thus ensure that owners can be reached if something happens to their animal. Carmen Morate said: “it is required by law to identify all dogs. There are even penalties of more than 300€ if you do not do this, but it is important that they have a microchip that relates to your own pet so that, no matter what happens, we can contact you. On January 2nd, I was notified by the local police of a dog that had been run over by a car. We were unable to contact the owners to tell them and, as of today, I still do not know if the owners know what happened to the animal, which was very well maintained and even wearing a jersey,” Carmen added: “The owners of the animals have rights, but also obligations, and to identify your dogs is one of them. Make sure they have a microchip to ensure we can identify them through the database, and it is important to keep it updated if you change your phone number.” “But most important is the identification of dangerous breeds of dogs: what are called PPP (potentially dangerous dogs) showing characteristics of powerful jaws and the force that they can exert. If someone wants to have one of these dogs, it is imperative that they have all these requirements, because failure to do so could see them penalised by a fine of 3,000€ or more,” added the Animal Protection Councillor, Carmen Morate.

THE FIESTA de San Antón (pets day) is celebrated this weekend throughout Spain. Thousands of animals will be blessed this weekend, as the nation honours their San Antón on Sunday 17th January, with many local towns taking part, including Alfaz del Pi. To commemorate the day, animal lovers will be holding a silent march – with no fireworks or music – through the town of Alfaz del Pi, starting at the Casa de Cultura at 11am and walking up to the church for a blessing, drink and snack. Throughout the Valencian region, bonfires are lit in honour of the saint, with the origin of the festival going back to the middle ages. Mixing both religious and pagan traditions, even the ancient winter solstice, it was celebrated, and honoured the sun, with fire to ward off evil spirits. It was during the medieval period that it began to take its current shape in the belief that San Antón lengthened the life of animals. For this reason, the 16 bonfires are lit the evening before in honour of San Antón and, the following day, the saint’s day, animals and pets are blessed.

Raspberry fig and vanilla tartin served with mascarpone...

This is a dish I cooked on Masterchef for Natalie Coleman (2013 champion) and got me though my next round! Might be worth giving a go! Preheat the oven to 200°C cut out four circles of pastry 3cm/1¼in bigger than the blini pans. If you don’t have blini pans you can use a bigger tin (nonstick) and make one big tartin. For the tarts, divide the sugar, butter, balsamic vinegar, vanilla and cardamom pods equally between the four blini pans (or one bigger tin) heat until you have a dark caramel. Remove from the heat and carefully remove the cardamom pods. Arrange the fig halves in the pans and place the rasberrys in between the figs. Cover the figs with the pastry circles, tucking any excess pastry down the side of the pan, and bake in the oven for 20 minutes. When cooked set aside to rest in the pans for 5-10 minutes. When ready to serve, Turn the tarts out onto serving plates, serve with mascarpone. 10 tbsp sugar 80g unsalted butter 8 cardamom pods 4 tbsp balsamic vinegar 2 vanilla pods (use the seeds only) punnet of Raspberry 12 figs, cut in half 320g puff pastry

Ovarian Cysts

Ovarian Cysts are fluid-filled sacs that can form in the ovaries. They are very common particularly during childbearing years. Ovarian cysts may affect both ovaries at the same time, or they may only affect one. The vast majority of ovarian cysts are non-cancerous (benign), although a small number are cancerous (malignant). Cancerous cysts are more common in women who have been through the menopause. Types: Functional cyst – the most common type of ovarian cyst, forms during ovulation when either the egg is not released or the follicle (the sac that in which the egg forms) does not dissolve after the egg is released. Cyst formation secondary to an underlying disease such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome or Endometriosis. Pathological cyst – cysts that occur due to abnormal cell growth. These are much less common. Cystadenomas – formed from cells on the surface of the ovary. Dermoid cyst – containing tissue similar to that in other parts of the body (skin, hair, teeth). Symptoms: Often, ovarian cysts don’t cause any symptoms and you may not realise you have one until you have a routine women’s check-up Symptoms of ovarian cysts and tumors include:

Pain or bloating in the abdomen Difficulty urinating, or frequent need to urinate Dull ache in the lower back Pain during sexual intercourse Painful menstruation and abnormal bleeding Unexplained weight gain Nausea or vomiting Loss of appetite, feeling full quickly despite having eaten little

If any of these symptoms are noted it is important to see your Family Doctor as ovarian cysts can also be indicative of ovarian tumours that are cancerous. Ovarian cysts can cause problems if they twist, bleed or rupture. In cases of sudden, severe pelvic pain medical attention should be sought without delay. Diagnosis: A lump may be felt during a routine pelvic examination. If a lump is felt further investigations will be carried out which may include blood tests (to look for cancer markers), ultrasound (via a vaginal probe) and laparoscopy (to look directly into the abdomen with a fine telescope). Treatment: Most ovarian cysts will go away on their own. If you don’t have any bothersome symptoms, especially if you haven’t yet gone through the menopause, your doctor may advocate ‘’watchful waiting.’’ The doctor won’t treat you but will

check you every one to three months to see if there has been any change in the cyst. The contraceptive pill may relieve the pain from ovarian cysts. By preventing ovulation, the risk of new cysts forming is reduced. Surgery is an option if the cyst doesn’t go away, grows, or causes pain. There are two types of surgery: Laparoscopy (the cyst is removed via a telescope-like instrument) which is a minimally invasive procedure, or if necessary (if the cyst is large) Laparotomy which necessitates a surgical incision into the abdomen. Fertility: Ovarian cysts don’t usually prevent pregnancy but in some cases it can be harder to conceive. If a cyst is to be surgically removed fertility preservation should be first discussed with the surgeon. This may mean removing just the cyst and leaving the ovary intact, or only removing one ovary.

Honda Civic THERE ARE two diesel engines available on the new Honda Civic: the 2.2 and the 1.6. I can’t speak for the former but the latter is so economical that I cover 300 miles on barely quarter of a tank. Honda claims that its 1.6-litre iDTEC will return 78mpg: I experience around 60mpg encompassing all manner of driving from stopping and starting in the slowest of traffic jams through to fast and demanding motorway cruising. This latest example (the ninth generation) of the Civic builds on the futuristic theme and enhances the parts that the original hinted at but didn’t carry off as well such as its rear, which features bulbous lights while the triangular exhausts have disappeared as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. I thought I would miss these but the whole package is more aesthetically pleasing. The concealed handles for the rear doors make this five-door seem like a three, especially to my wife when she first tried to get

our children in the back. It’s a nice touch and one that seems to have been copied by other manufacturers. The rear windscreen is still an annoyance for me because of the position of the spoiler which eﬀectively cuts the screen in two and hinders vision when inside. But it’s a great driver’s car with body hugging ‘magic’ seats. My family and I demand much from our striking red protégé because we go away for a long weekend and while it is not large enough for our tandem pushchair, it copes with a suitcase, my daughter’s Trunki, a single pushchair, a crib, a bouncer and a box of food as well as my daughters in their two car seats. Despite being weighed down the driving experience is good. The economy ﬁgures I mentioned earlier are reached with a combination of automatic engine stop/start and the use of a green economy button to the right of the steering wheel. While engaged progress is noticeably a little lethargic on occasions disen-

gaging this does speed up the process. But once the Civic is on its way progress is satisfying and with the correct gears there’s an element of gusto. The gearbox is a little notchy but it can be forgiven this for its decisiveness. The Civic is a tricky car to reverse and on occasions it can be difficult to gauge whether there are any obstructions behind, so it is helpful that some models are fitted with reversing sensors; unfortunately this model does not have them. Equipped with all the usual refinement the

air conditioning is an absolute blessing during the height of our British summer where temperatures exceed 25 degrees Celsius. It’s true. And so the lo setting keeps us all extremely happy. Bad start to the year for CD Montesinos by KEITH NICOL

CD DOLORES increased their lead at the top of the division with this workman-like yet professional performance as they came away from the Campo Municipal in Los Montesinos with all the three points after a narrow 0-1 away win.

The performance once again demonstrated why they are firm favourites to win this group and gain promotion to the 1st Regional Division, a level they feel they should never have left. CD Montesinos played one of their better games this season. They matched their opponents for most of the game and had enough chances to win the game, although perhaps a draw would have been a fair result. But the lack of firepower from the home side this season was once more evident as chance after chance went begging, none more so than a first time effort from M & A in the second half after some excellent work from Macan down the right side. The first half had ended all square and it was left to the Monte fans in the 271 crowd to rue missed chances. Carlos was especially useful down the Monte right hand side and he continually probed and beat his defender to get in a steady supply of crosses which were dealt with comfortably by a well organised Dolores defence. The only goal of the game arrived in the 28th minute of the second half and, unfortunately for “Monte”, it went to Do-

lores. A cross from the Dolores left wing was met with a powerful header on the edge of the six yard box to give Lopez “The Cat” no chance. It is clear that CD Montesinos are in need of a good goal scorer, something that is hard to come by at this level. Have no doubts, his is a good Monte side but for all their good work and effort, without a recognised and effective front man, all their efforts come to nothing. Scoring has been a problem all season for Montesinos and nowhere has it been more evident than it was in this game. This result leaves Dolores at the top of the division with 39 points from 15 matches played whilst CD Montesinos are in 7th position with 24 points and, even at this stage of the season, looking as if a promotion place is out of their reach. Despite their poor form of late, the Monte faithful continue to support their team and continue to have one of the best levels of support in the division. The supporters Man of the Match award was given to Club captain Fernando and presented to him after the match by David Winder from the golf arm of the supporters club, Torregolf. eu, whom the Full Monte would like to thank for their continued support. CD Montesinos now travel to Murada where they face the local side, Club Deportivo Murada. La Marina Golf Society THE ANNUAL competition for the Royal Marines Trophy took place on 7th January, with 22 members and guests competing for what is a four club competition. The course, at BonAlba, was in good condition, although the bunkers require some attention. Despite the wind, several good scores were recorded. Winner of the Royal Marines Trophy was John Thompson with 31 points which also earned him the Gold category award. Nearest The Pins went to Pete Wootton, Graham Marriner, John Lywood and Dave Walsh,with the Longest Drive prize going to Steve Jones. Silver Category award went to the new captain ,Jimmy Scott with 29 points. The society’s thanks go to Eric Edwards, ex-Royal Marine, who provided and presented the prizes. Hopefully, he’ll be fit enough sometime this year to join them for a round. The next meeting is at Alenda on 21st January. Anyone’s game as Torrevieja draw with Onteniente LAST WEEKEND marked the half way stage of the Third Division season with the first match of the second round of games in the championship and after four consecutive wins for Torrevieja, this time the spoils were shared as the game ended goalless. After playing their last three games in the Nelson Mandela, CD Torrevieja returned to its usual venue of Vicente Garcia, after reseeding the pitch just before the Christmas break. As often happens in a game of such high tension, in which both contenders have more to lose than gain, the game produced few chances and shots on goal, with the major action happening at the Torrevieja end during the final five minutes of regular play, with the home side’s blushes only prevented by a couple of excellent saves from goalkeeper Miguel Serna. Both teams fought hard and the Referee was kept busy handing out six yellows to Torrevieja and two to the visitors, but nothing for exceptionally dangerous play. So, no goals scored on Sunday with Onteniente dropping to fifth from third in the league while Torrevieja are 12th on 26 points. Next Sunday’s away game at CF Borriol promises to be a close one too, as they are in 13th place, also on 26 points, so both teams have everything to play for. Their last meeting resulted in a 2:2 draw. Torrevieja’s last home game for the month takes place on January 24th against Atletico Saguntino to whom Torre
