A word from Caroline...

Hola!

AS THE weather turns colder this week it is a stark reminder that mother nature can be cruel as well as kind, particularly with waves sweeping people away and complete regions being cut off, albeit temporarily. It is now that our neighbours needs us more than ever, maybe simply to have a chat and discuss world affairs, but often those who are isolated in the colder weather are unable to take care of themselves and keep fed and warm. It takes just a few minutes out of our day to check that someone is alright, but can mean the world to them and, in rare cases, it can mean saving a life. So, if you are chopping wood for yourself, just chop that little bit more for someone else and, it you haven’t seen your neighbour for a few days, just call round and say hi. You aren’t being a nosy neighbour, you are just doing the right thing.

Enjoy the read! CT GOT A STORY?

Los Urrutias beach

by IAN ASKEW

A THOUSAND British and German residents have joined in the protests in Los Urrutias about the state of the Mar Menor beaches. The two things that Simon Cooper does not like, since arriving in Los Urrutias two years ago, are the high taxes he has to pay as a self-employed person, for the bar he has run since 2013, and the filthy state of the beach, which he believes is driving his customers away. “The state of the beach, full of algae and mud, is ‘absolutely crazy’” he says. At Simon’s bar, the ‘Don Lorenzo’, customers Roy Hunt, Patricia Harrington, Paul Martin and John Astle nod their agreement with Simon. More than a thousand ex-pats have been living peacefully in the area for decades, but, each year, things seem to get worse, to the point where they no longer feel able enjoy the pleasant climate all year round, with a dip in clean waters in front of their houses. The Urbanization Estrella de Mar, located at the exit of Los Urrutias on the road that leads to Los Nietos, has become, over the past 40 years, an increasingly thriving colony of ex-pats, principally British and German, but is also home to an increasing number of Spaniards. It is not like other locations that are active only in summer. “There are some 300 families

who spend all winter here,” explains the president of the urbanization homeowners association, Mario Werner. “We have five restaurants that are active throughout the year,” states Werner. “There is also at least one housing rental company, a physiotherapy and massage centre, and a hairdresser. Also, the commercial fabric of Los Urrutias has diversified, with a wine bar, a florist and a veterinary clinic, whose staff speak different languages. All this has been possible because people are comfortable here, but the situation has worsened over the last four years to the point where more and more people are thinking about leaving. Dykes, and harbour breakwaters cause stagnant water, sludge and algae. They have to remove those barriers The people of Estrella de Mar have demonstrated over the last year that they are ready to fight for clean beaches.” The president of the Neighborhood Association, Severo Sánchez, is part of the Spanish community of Los Urrutias whose businesses are oriented largely towards the foreign residents, as he runs a wine shop in the main street. Sánchez identifies with Mario Werner, and has invited him to a meeting with the mayor of Cartagena, Josè López, to make him aware of the anger of these people. As he says, “It is very simple. We have invested our money here, so we want adequate services.”

#NEWSBITES AMBULANCE PERSONNEL INJURED IN ACCIDENT THREE HEALTH workers, from Cartagena’s Protección Civil service, were slightly injured on Wednesday, when their ambulance was in a front and side collision with a lorry. Cancer breakthrough

Layla Richards

by CAROLINE TYSZKA SCIENTISTS IN America have revealed a major breakthrough in the fight against cancer. A cancer research centre, in Seattle, US, has released the findings of a study where nine out of ten leukaemia sufferers saw their symptoms completely vanish. The extraordinary breakthrough, with the revolutionary cancer therapy where cells are taken from a patient, modified, and then put back into the patient, has also seen four out of five other blood cancer sufferers make significant improvements in their condition, with more than half also becoming symptom free. Lead scientist, Professor Stanley Riddell, from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre, in Seattle, US, said the results were “among patients who were projected to have two to five months to live.” He said: “This is extraordinary. This is unprecedented in medicine to be honest, to get response rates in this range in these very advanced patients.” In simplistic terms, the technique removes immune cells, T-cells, and tags them with molecules that target cancer. These modified cells are then put back into the patient and reduce the ability of the cancer to shield itself from the body’s natural immune system. The treatment is in the early stages for being approved for general use, as Professor Riddell and his team are not aware of how long the patients will remain symptom free, and need to investigate further the side effects of the treatment. Seven of the patients suffered an immune reaction to the treatment, which meant that they required intensive care treatment, with two of the seven dying. Last year, a similar treatment was used at Great Ormond Street Hospital on one year old Layla Richards, which gave staggering results for her Leukaemia, as Layla continues to be in remission.

VALENTINE’S DAY MOVIE HORROR

A CINEMA showing the BAFTA winning “the Revenant” film on Valentine’s Day was evacuated, mid-way through the film, after the ceiling partially collapsed.

Six people were injured when part of the cinema roof in the town of Valladolid collapsed. The town is the 13th most populous municipality in north western Spain, and has a cinema located in the local shopping centre. Emergency services attended the scene,

where 42 people had been watching the survival film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, prior to the collapse. Of the six injured, two were treated at the scene, with the remaining four being taken to the local hospital. Investigation teams were unable to confirm to local media why the collapse had occurred, but the area had experienced severe weather during the day, with heavy rainfall and strong winds.

Promising band die in accident A PROMISING YOUNG band has died in what appears to be a tragic accident in Sweden.

The four-piece Warrington-based band, Viola Beach, were officially formed in May last year, and were taking part in their first overseas gig, when the vehicle that they were travelling in crashed near Stockholm in the early hours of Saturday morning. All four band members, and their manager, died when their vehicle plunged more than 25 metres from a bridge into a canal. Kris Leonard, River Reeves, Tomas Lowe, Jack Dakin and manager Craig Tarry were travelling in the car, having played a last minute gig at the Swedish music festival on the Friday, and were heading home for a gig booked in Guildford, Surrey on the Saturday. Mr Tarry’s family say that they were grieving his loss and “for the other families involved in this tragic accident”. In a statement, issued via the UK Foreign Office, they said they were “devastated”, adding: “Craig was a warm, loving person who had worked tirelessly to achieve success and follow his dreams within the music industry.” Tributes poured in from fans, other musicians, and radio presenters, who had heard the band’s music. John Olsson, from Swedish band Psykofant, said: “They were a great band. I was standing in the audience thinking I will be able to say I hung around with Viola Beach before they made it big.” Viola Beach released their debut single, Swings & Waterslides, last year and had featured on BBC Introducing, which showcases up-and-coming music artists. Music promoter, Dave Pichilingi, booked the band for the Liverpool Sound City festival last year, and they were scheduled to play again this year. They were a “hungry, energetic, amazing” band who “were on the verge of great things”, he said. Travis lead singer Fran Healy tweeted: “So sad. @Viola_Beach :(“ Ross Jarman, from The Cribs, tweeted: “Heart goes out to the Viola Beach guys and their families.” The band have entered the Official Top 40 singles chart following a fan-led campaign to get the group to number one. Communion, the band’s record label, confirmed that the proceeds from the sale of the single will go to the families of the men, who were aged between 19 and 32. There is no official report yet as to why the vehicle decided to go onto the bridge, which was open at the time. Viola Beach

Plans to withdraw €500 notes THE EUROPEAN Central Bank’s chairman announced at the beginning of the week that they are considering withdrawing the 500€ note from circulation. On Monday Mario Draghi, chairman of the European Central Bank, announced that it was possibly going to cease using the 500€ note, due to increasing criminal activities with the larger monetary denomination, as well as public opinion being against using the note. Luis De Guindos, Spain’s minister for the economy, welcomed the possibility of the note being withdrawn, saying “it would be an appropriate step to take in the fight against money laundering.” “The note, because of its monetary size, is more likely to be involved in unusual accounting processes, but also is very difficult for the average person to spend,” he said. Very few outlets will even accept the 200€ let alone the 500€, meaning that anyone receiving them in their pay check needs to go to their bank and request smaller denominations. Guindos went on to say that money should fulfil three functions, to be viable; that it should be a unit of accounting, a deposit value, and also a method of payment; tthe problem in this case being that it did not meet the third requirement.

Council enforces terrace rules

#NEWSBITES

by CAROLINE TYSZKA THE TOWN council of Torrevieja has begun enforcing terrace rules on the promenade, saying that many bars and cafes have been abusing the space. Restaurant and café owners that use the terrace zones at the Peseo Juan Aparicio promenade, in Torrevieja, watched on Monday as council workers placed dotted lines on the pavement, showing where tables and chairs could and could not be placed. Regulations state that there must be a passageway of 1.8 metres between

the facades and terraces with several metres between the tables and chairs and the edge of the coast. During Easter and the summer months, thousands of visitors use the promenade, and walk through the corridor between the businesses and the beach. Javier Manzanares, councillor for public pathways, told local media that “these measures are far more effective for us to check if any of the businesses are abusing the regulations, gaining an unfair advantage over other establishments, as well as causing safety issues

for the general public.” A security patrol will monitor the regulatory enforcement lines, which will now be easier for all to see rather than the previous signs, over which many establishments would argue with the authorities. The new markings run from playa del Cura, where the’ man of the sea’ monument is located, for approximately 1 km along the promenade. Manzanares said: “If businesses exceed the stated line with their furniture, then enforcement will be through fines, and the removal of the tables and chairs.”

FUNDING FOR STUDENTS IN ALICANTE A NEW programme has been announced which will offer scholarship funding for those students requiring assistance.

Juan Aparicio promenade

The new university scholarships will offer 600 euros per month, estimated to benefit more than a thousand students where they are part of a family unit of four or more with a maximum household income of 18,000 euros. If the course is approved the student will have the grant for four years as the aid package for universities has been increased by 40% in this year’s budget. The director of universities, Josefina Bueno, and the minister for universitiesVicentMarzà detailed the new grant saying that it would help end “social divide” and allow access to higher education without the concern for resources.

Snowed in WINTER FINALLY arrived in Spain at the weekend, leaving many homes cut off by snow and strong winds, and also many questioning their missing winter fuel allowances.

Bad weather, which started at the weekend, has continued to prove that Mediterranean countries aren’t all sun, sea and sangría. The cold front that moved over Spain at the weekend continued to cause disruption through the week, with snow in Galicia causing treacherous driving conditions, and people needing to be rescued from their vehicles. The high winds, which also affected the southern coastal areas of the country, saw emergency services receive over 100 reports in Seville alone, where flying objects were causing damage to buildings and property. In the northern region of Cantabria, one person was dragged into the sea

by a wave in the coastal town of Castro Urdiales, while authorities in the Andalucían town of Tarifa, southern Spain, were forced to close the port because of strong winds. Temperatures fell to below freezing in many provinces, with further strong winds and minus temperatures predicted to last until after the weekend. Many expats are finding that, unlike other years, they can longer apply for the “winter fuel payment” issued by the UK government, following changes being made to the criteria, making paying the higher winter bills all the more difficult. The rules state that, for this year (20152016), to qualify for the payment, you must have been born before 5th January 1953 and have been living in the UK for the week for 21st September to 27th September 2015, in addition to the temperature factors now being adopted. The UK government site states “You can’t

Friday, February 19 - Thursday, February 25 2016

Accident in Galicia

get the payment if you live in Cyprus, France, Gibraltar, Greece, Malta, Portugal or Spain, because the payments are based on whether the average winter temperature is higher than that of the warmest region of the UK.” Most expats are not aware that Spain also has allowances that can be claimed, but, in this instance, the allowance, called the “social bono”, is not

applied for through the government but the power supplier themselves. An allowance, approximately 20%, can be claimed if you have a contract of less than 10 kW and have a large family and are unemployed, or if you are retired with the minimum age of 60 years. Expats who think they may be eligible for the “social bono” must contact their energy suppliers directly.

Bataclan survivors united THE EAGLES of Death Metal took to the stage earlier in the week in Paris, three months after their concert that saw the massacre of 90 people.

On Tuesday, the American band, Eagles of Death Metal, performed again, in a concert that was highly emotional, at the Olympia hall, a few miles from the original venue. On Monday, the group met up with 60 survivors of the Islamist gunmen’s attack that took place whilst the band were on stage at the Bataclan concert venue in November 2015. The tribute gig was organised to help survivors and raise morale in the city, which is still struggling to move on from the terrible atrocities of that fateful evening. The large crowd cheered and cried as the group came out on stage, with a rousing round of applause for them, and a show of defiance to Islamist terrorists that they would not be beaten. The band’s frontman, Jesse Hughes, told the crowd on Tuesday: “Bonsoir Paris, we’re ready for this!” The group stopped halfway through one of their tracks, I Only Want You, to remember the victims. “Let’s take a moment to remember, then we will get back to the fun,” Hughes said. Survivors have spoken about the difficulties they have faced in trying to rebuild their lives, following that fateful night where 130 people lost their lives at locations around the city in the coordinated attacks.

MADE TO FEEL AT HOME

BRITISH HOLIDAYMAKERS who find crossing the roads in Benidorm confusing can now read specially painted road marking designed to ensure their safety. Benidorm town council has begun painting the zebra crossings in the resort with “Look Left” as many tourists seem to find crossing the roads safely difficult. Particular attention is being paid to the “English zone”, where several accidents and near misses have occurred, with the British not looking in the right direction. José Ramón González de Zárate, councillor for Mobility, said “we do not know if other Spanish resorts have done this, but we need to care for our tourists and their safety.” Painting the crossings began on Tuesday in Calle Mallorca and Gerona.

BAFTAs lead the way for Oscars by CAROLINE TYSZKA

BRITAINS BIGGEST film awards ceremony took place at the weekend, leading the way for the Oscars later in the month. The big winner for the 2016 BAFTAs on Sunday evening was “The Revenant” which saw awards for best film, best actor and best director. Leonardo DiCaprio, best actor award winner, accepted his prize with a moving speech which paid tribute to his mother and wished her a happy birthday. Sidney Poitier, aged 88, was honoured with the lifetime achievement award, via a video link from his home to the ceremony audience, and said “today my cup runneth over because I am here with my daughter and the future filmmakers of the world, in celebration of this wonderful art form. To my family, my life force, I am nothing without you. And all of you, thank you for your warm embrace and this extraordinary moment and memory I shall cherish.” The Best actress award went to Brie Larson, with Kate Winslet and Mark Rylance collecting the best supporting male and female awards. As with all high profile events, the red carpet fashion parade was debated on social media with “should or shouldn’t” have worn outfits being discussed. However, this year, Stephen Fry was the target of controversy as he joked about the winner of the best costume design award looking “like a bag lady.” Social media immediately went into overdrive, accusing the presenter of being rude, offensive and showing poor judgement.

Illegal touting campaign Crackdown on #NEWSBITES

LOCAL POLICE officers in Benidorm have begun to fine individuals and companies who tout on the streets offering free tours.

Police officers fined two tour companies on Monday, following investigations into touts and buses parked at two locations in the town. The first company was canvassing on the street, with a coach parked in Avenida Almendros. Officers inspected the bus and found several irregularities with both the paperwork and the legal requirements to carry certain safety items. The coach driver was then fined 640€. The second vehicle, which was parked on Jaime I, passed the vehicle inspection. However, the company, based in Finestrat, was also fined for conducting illegal tour activities. A total of 1,500€ fines were issued. Until recently, police have only fined the street sellers, but point out in their statement that “these are people with few resources and so we are now seeking out the companies behind the vendors who operate with unfair competition.” Lorenzo Martínez, councillor for Security in Benidorm, stated that he had written to the hotel employer Hosbec, asking them to confirm whether their members authorised coach excursions from their premises. If a hotel has no

animal cruelty

Street tour tout

connection with the companies then it makes a stronger case for the police to enforce the regulations regarding picking up and dropping off at the hotels.

The councillor for Security argued that “the activity of the bus itself is not illegal, but through them we can locate the parent companies.”

GUARIDA CIVIL officers have arrested dozens of hunters and vets in Andalucía for animal cruelty. A special Guardia Civil division, called Seprona, arrested six vets and 26 hunters in Huelva, Andalucía, for mutilating dogs, in a practice that hunters claim is part of an “ancestral” and rural tradition. The mutilations, called cropping or docking in English, involve the dogs having their ears and tails cut off, without anaesthetic. The procedures, which are illegal in Andalucía, have seen veterinarians accused of falsifying documents to allow the procedures, although many hunters performed the mutilation without consulting a vet to save themselves 40€ per visit. According to the El Pais publication, those hunters who went to the vets came to an agreement that they would be granted exclusive access from the hunting in exchange for the mutilations. Hunters argue that cutting off parts of a dog’s tail prevents burrs and brambles from causing pain or infection, believing the hounds are merely tools for hunting. The special Guardia unit set up “operation ears” a year ago, to monitor and investigate cases of mutilation. The unit will continue to arrest hunters and vets if they are found to be involved in this illegal activity.

Auschwitz trial starts today by CAROLINE TYSZKA

A FORMER Auschwitz guard has gone on trial, accused of being involved in the deaths of 170,000 prisoners. Reinhold Hanning, now 93 years old, is a former Nazi SS guard at the renowned killing camp, and is charged with meeting the prisoners, mainly Jewish, as they arrived at the camp, and possibly escorting some to the gas chambers. Accused by prosecutors in Dortmund, and 38 complainants from Hungary, Israel, Canada, Great Britain, the United States and Germany, Hanning has faced accounts of camp survivors who witnessed the killings. Whilst he confirmed that he had been a guard at the camp, Reinhold has denied being involved in the mass murders. This is the first trial of four, with a further two men and one woman, all in their nineties, set to be tried in the coming months, also accused of being guards at the camp. The Nazi slogan “Arbeit macht frei” (Work sets you free), which is pictured at the gates of the former Nazi German concentration and extermination camp, Aus-

chwitz-Birkenau, in Oswiecim, offers a stark reminder of the atrocities that occurred during World War II. Three Holocaust survivors testified, on the second day of the trial, about the horrors they experienced at Auschwitz, involving Hanning, the former SS sergeant charged with the 170,000 counts of accessory to murder. Hanning showed no emotion as the witnesses told of crematoria chimneys belching flames, naked prisoners being taken to the gas chambers, and people being shot. Justin Sonder, the youngest of the witnesses at 90, arrived at Auschwitz aged 17 and was selected to be a slave labourer for the IG Farben Company, rather than being sent directly to the gas chambers. He told the court that, after three or four months, he was considered one of the older prisoners, and feared most selection days, when SS men would look at rows of inmates, who were forced to stand in a line naked for up to four hours, and decide who was still fit to work and who should be killed. Survivors are always searching for Nazi SS personnel who have not yet been held accountable for their actions, although it is feared this group of trials may be among the last, as many have now died.

Help with processionary caterpillars

by CAROLINE TYSZKA IT IS the time of year where many of the processionary caterpillar cocoons are hatching, and pet owners need to be more careful when out walking with their animals. The caterpillars (procesionaria del pino) make their way to the ground in a long chain, searching for the next place in their life cycle. Eventually they disperse to burrows just below the ground, where they will pupate, but, before this happen,s they can be a danger to humans and other mammals. It is the hairs of the caterpillars that can cause problems. If they are

touched or poked, they cause a nasty rash and give off dust that can cause respiratory problems. They are particularly toxic for children and animals. Official advice is that, if you see these caterpillars on an urbanisation, then you should inform the authorities, and they should be removed. In some areas the council will remove them. Some people suggest that you can spray the caterpillars with hairspray, to stop them projecting their hairs, before burning them. However, should the hairs become airborne, then you are more likely to be at risk. If you do touch one, and

become itchy, you should consult a doctor. The rashes can be very painful and irritating, and can last for a few weeks. If your pet is infected, you can usually tell because there will be small white spots in the mouth and on the tongue, and the animal will become distressed, and possibly drool. If they remain untreated, animals can die, as the tongue will swell and, in some cases, has to be cut or amputated. If you know your pet has been affected, then you should go to the vets immediately, where your pet will probably be given a cortisone injection.

CONTINUED GROWTH AT FINESTRAT WORK HAS begun on the new Leroy Merlin store that will create over 100 new jobs for the area. The Finestrat shopping area will have a new store later this year, with the opening of a Leroy Merlin outlet. Workers started early on Tuesday morning, preparing for the store, which involves an investment of 23 million euros and creates 120 in-store jobs and 50 indirectly from the new shop. Francisco Pérez, Mayor of Finestrat, said: “we are so pleased that work has now begun, and look forward to the store opening before Christmas. To have such brand names here shows our commitment to create new job opportunities in the area.” The council is currently in talks with the store owners, seeking an agreement to allow residents in Finestrat first chance to apply for the vacancies. Leroy Merlin has 10 stores in the Valencian region. This new store is included in their expansion plan programme which intends to open 23 new outlets and create 3,700 direct and indirect jobs.

Cathedral bell tower

Call to ban church bells TWO STUDENTS in Orihuela have launched a petition to ban church bells ringing out during unsociable hours. Alejandro Berenguer and Manuel Macia, students studying political science in Orihuela, moved to the region just over a year ago and had no idea that, when trying to revise for classes and exams, church bells could cause so many difficulties. The town has over thirty bells, within churches and other buildings, that ring out constantly during the day and night, a constant 24 hours of various “dings and dongs.” The students decided that they would launch their petition, and took to the streets to gain support from the general community, with many agreeing that the bells were disruptive during certain times of the night. In particular, the cathedral bells ring, irrespective of the time, and a key point in the petition is that, after midnight, no church bells should ring. A formal letter was sent to the town council from the students, asking for the imple-

mentation of the Law 7/2002 of the Generalitat Valencian Protection against Noise Pollution, establishing the noise level that is allowed in public and private buildings at different times, and, for cultural and religious buildings, it is 45 decibels. Manuel and Alejandro have even been asked by some of the residents to lower the cut off time to 10pm, as many of them have children who are in bed at that time, or they have to work early in the mornings. Both students have been forced to move into another apartment as, previously, they were located between two churches, making it impossible to study. A spokesperson for the cathedral said that they were not aware of the petition calling for the bells to be silenced, but that the cathedral was not open from midnight to 7am, precisely so that it did not disturb its neighbours. A Facebook page has been set up for the students to gather further feedback from other interested parties, although opinions are divided and some feel strongly that Orihuela has always been known for its bells, and should remain the same.

ILLEGAL EMPLOYER ARRESTED NATIONAL POLICE in Algorfa have arrested a man suspected of employing workers illegally. A 45 year old man in Algorfa was detained by police officers for offering immigrants papers to help show employment within Spain at a cost of 525 euros per person. This paperwork could then be used to help obtain residency in the country. The accused had advertised via social media abroad, with the Consulate General of Spain in Asuncion (Paraguay) becoming aware of the promotion and asking officers in Spain to investigate. The advert was placed under “jobs for immigrants in Spain” and said that vacancies were available in many luxury hotels within the Alicante province and also farm labourers were required. Officers have so far found five victims of the fraud who have paid in total 2,625 euros for a service that is free. The victims were Columbian and Dominican residents.

Cartagena’s lake will be covered over before Good Friday by IAN ASKEW THE HALF-COMPLETED excavation of the Punic and Roman remains in Cartagena’s Plaza de la Merced will be partly covered over, during Holy Week, to allow passage of the procession of ‘El Encuentro’, in the small hours of Good Friday.

The excavation

Puerto de Mazarrón tapas trail PUERTO DE MAZARRÓN’S fiestas of San José are set to have their very own tapas trail, as bars, cafés and restaurants in ‘The Port’, as Puerto de Mazarrón is popularly known to ex-pats, have been invited to take part by presenting a single cold or hot tapa. The Fiestas of San José tapas trail will be held from 7th to 20th March, and the local council has already set up the process whereby any bar or restaurant can take part.

However, locals and organisers of the procession are still considering possible changes to the procession route, as a contingency plan. The Councillor for Infrastructure has asserted that there is more than enough time to carry out the work of covering over the Plaza de la Merced, currently nicknamed ‘the lake’. “We need to carefully cover the Punic remains and protect them with a layer of sand and tarpaulins. Then, we´ll place over it all a concrete topping for strength. This can be done in a few days.” During the procession, the public will be able to use about 60% of the square, with entry and exit on the sides facing the Calle San Diego and the Palacio de Aguirre. The excavation of the square began in autumn 2013, but did not affect the Easter processions of 2014 or 2015. The ‘El Encuentro’ procession is a tradition in the Plaza de la Merced.

HELPING WITH HEARING

THE TOURIST Office in Pilar de la Horadada has launched a new service aimed at helping visitors with hearing difficulties.

Protest at the school

Funding crisis in local school THE ALICANTE council has ceased funding an eight year project which helped foreign students integrate. The Virgen delRemedio Institute in Alicante has been forced to abandon a scheme that helped over 1,000 students from 35 different nationalities, a project that was started in 2008. Three qualified staff were employed, with an annual bill of 72,000 euros for the project, which helped students both socially and academically. Families protested outside the centre, calling for the money to be found to continue with the project that helps Moroccan students as well as other nationalities. The project has partly been funded in the past by the CAM bank and Caixa, normally contributing 35,000 euros

but this year no funding has been made available. The Councillor for Finance, whilst accepting that there was a need for the project, refused to comment any further but the city spokesperson, Bellido, told local media that “this scheme has worked very well and been very successful, the Ministry of Education should take over the funding so that it can continue.” The councillor detailed that they were not entirely responsible for funding the assistance and that it had relied on external funding and goodwill from other sources. Juan Antonio Tormo, the head of the Institute Virgen de Remedio said that so far “the council have closed the door on me for this.”

The Valencian Tourism Agency is working to boost tourism without barriers and has begun helping local offices to ensure that people with hearing disabilities are also able to enjoy the facilities that the offices and towns have to offer. The portable magnetic induction loops have been supplied following consultation with the Federation of the Deaf of Valencia (FESORD) and do not require installation. The devices work by collecting the voice, audio or sound and send it in the form of magnetic signals directly to hearing aids or implants. All offices that provide the service will have a window sticker showing the international signage for hearing accessibility.

Reversible lane to improve traffic flow in La Manga by IAN ASKEW

LAST FRIDAY, the regional government announced its Strategic Plan for the Revitalization of La Manga, which will include works to improve traffic, by means of a third, reversible, lane during peak hours, while the mayor of Cartagena, José López, announced that, this summer, overspill parking will be available in Cabo de Palos. The Minister of Public Works and Infrastructures, Francisco Bernabé, explained that, his department, in conjunction with the municipalities of San Javier and Cartagena, had concluded that the third, reversible, lane repre-

sented the best solution available to the traffic problems currently experienced. Then, the mayor of Cartagena, José López, announced that, for the summer season, Cartagena council will be operating a park-and-ride system, at Cabo de Palos, in order to reduce the number of cars entering the La Manga strip, as well as improving the tow-away service which removes the illegally parked vehicles which make La Manga such a “traffic nightmare”. As part of the longer term plan, López explained that his administration is working on the “regrowth” of La Manga,

with university professors and experts in oceanography, in order to determine “whether we can expand the area”, since “the other option, which is to reduce the population and buildings, is not viable.” The presentation was also attended by the Minister of Economic Development, Tourism and Employment, Juan Hernández, who welcomed the plan as being “essential to overcome historical weaknesses and achieve the revitalization” of La Manga, which he described as a “natural theme park for the practice of outdoor sports”, pointing out that “10 of the 64 million foreign tourists who came to Spain in 2015 came to practice sports.”

HSE empire strikes back SAFETY CHIEFS are prosecuting a film production company over the incident where star Harrison Ford broke a leg during the filming of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The actor, who plays hero Hans Solo, was injured in an accident at Pinewood Studios when he was struck by a heavy hydraulic door understood to be on the set of the Millennium Falcon spacecraft in June 2014. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is taking action against Foodles Production (UK) and company representatives are expected to appear before High Wycombe Magistrates in May. And a HSE spokesman said the company faced four charges of health and safety legislation. “By law, employers must take reasonable steps to protect workers – this is as true on a film set as a factory floor. “We have investigated thoroughly and believe we have enough evidence to bring the case to court.” He added Foodles Production (UK) Ltd – a subsidiary of entertainment Walt Disney - was the company producing the film and responsible under health and safety law for managing the risks created during production. The 73-year-actor is reported to have been paid $34 million to return to the role of Hans Solo. He was airlifted to an Oxford hospital after the accident and was sidelined for two months; director JJ Abrams was forced to halt production while he recovered. And a spokeswoman for Foodles Production (UK) said: “Cast and crew safety is always a top priority. We provided full co-operation during HSE’s investigation into the on-set accident that occurred in June 2014 and are disappointed in HSE’s decision.” Two more Star Wars films are planned by Disney. Star Wars: The Force Awakens has already been a massive box office hit; by the start of the month, it had made $2,008,361,000 worldwide since its release.

New York flight U-turn PASSENGERS ON a flight bound for New York watched in horror as their inflight entertainment showed that they were making a U-turn not long after take-off.

A Virgin flight, travelling from Heathrow on Sunday evening, and heading for New York, was forced to return to the London airport following an incident which left one of the pilots temporarily blinded.

The incident happened about six or seven miles into the flight, when a laser beam was pointed at the plane, and left the First Officer “feeling unwell.” As a precautionary measure, flight V5025, bound for JFK airport, returned to Heathrow, leaving passengers angry and confused that the flight was not rescheduled for later in the evening. Passengers were informed that due to “limited availability” they would not be able to fly out until the

following afternoon. A spokesperson for the airline said: “we apologise for any inconvenience caused to our passengers, but the safety of our crew and customers is always our top priority.” Passengers were provided with hotel accommodation overnight but denied access to their on-board luggage. The airline said it was working with authorities to identify the source of the “laser beam incident”.

Metropolitan Police said they had been contacted at around 9.35pm, but were still trying to establish where the offence took place. Police have previously warned about high-powered laser pens being aimed at aircraft, saying there could be “disastrous consequences” through disorientation or momentary loss of control. An average of four laser beam incidents at Heathrow airport are reported every day.

Writer & Broadcaster Tune in 12-3pm www.power-fm.es

I got red-hot chest pains, and when you’re approaching 70 from the wrong direction, it’s Uh-oh! the waste product is about to hit the rudimentary air conditioning unit. Ironically the artist at the time was warbling the Death Dirge from ‘Titanic’ – ‘My Heart Will Go On.’ Just a quick aside, why do artists when introducing a well known song say “Here’s a song that goes something like this” I don’t want it to go something like this, I want it to go exactly like this. With a seizure (perplexing during a game of charades, methinks) would they jovially announce “Okay! nothing to see here – let’s carry on with the show with a song that goes something like this,” and surreptitiously drag the body out the back with the night’s empties, to be recycled the next morning? Vis-à-vis recycling/reincarnation - although I’m not convinced about the ‘great beyond’, I do throw in the occasional Hosanna! during ‘Songs of Praise.’ I don’t want to miss the hereafter on a technicality. Just think how many mysteries & myths could be resolved - as a reborn Neil Armstrong. Did July 20th 1969 happen 250,000 miles away or round the corner in a Hollywood studio, just to rankle Russia? November 22nd 1963 on the 6th floor of 411 Elm Street, home of the then Texas School Book Depository. Finding out what really occurred before Jack Ruby (Mafia/CIA?) pulled a .38 Colt Cobra & plugged Lee Harvey Oswald. From the grassy knoll of Dallas to the sandy land of Galilee. How in God’s (Dad’s?) name did a humble carpenter set up and market a belief system that still resonates after 2000+ years? September 30th 1938,what possessed Neville Chamberlain to take Hitler’s word, after the blitzkrieg of Czechoslovakia, that Mein Führer had no ‘further’ travel plans? A more prosaic puzzler, did Einstein & Monroe circa 1947 dance the mattress mambo, and muse post-coital? – MM. (simpering) “Oh! Albie, our baby with my looks & your brain would be perfect.” AE.(Germanic) “Ja! Mein Liebling, but what if it’s the other way around?” Time for a nap after all this other-worldly wandering. By the bye,the fiery pain problem was the Vindaloo I’d noshed earlier - asking permission to leave. Ladies & Gentlemen, here’s a Johnny Cash song that goes something like this. ‘I fell into a burning ring of fire.’

ARE YOU sure that you are not overpaying interest? Thousands of those affected are unaware that they are paying literally thousands more than they should. DEAR READERS, we highly recommend you review the interests on the mortgage loan that you are currently paying, and compare it with the interest that you paid before. If you are not currently paying a lot less interest than before, you may be affected by the clause known as mortgage floor or minimum interest rate. As explained before, the mortgage floor or minimum interest clause, has as a consequence that although the reference interest rate of your loan (usually Euribor) falls, the payable interest by you never lowers, as the bank has set a minimum % to be paid. For example, if it is agreed with the bank to pay an interest of EURIBOR + 1%, but on the Deed of the loan, normally without the knowledge of the consumer, the bank established that in any case, the final interest to be paid could never be less than 3.5 %. Therefore, although interest should be EURIBOR (now set in 0.04%) + 1%, that means 1.04%, always you the consumer will pay a minimum of 3.5%, since this floor or minimum interest clause prevents the consumer from benefiting from the decreases in the reference interest rate of the loan. Given that these floor clauses are very high, and today the usual interests rate of reference (especially EURIBOR) are very low, even negative, it is essential that everyone who has a mortgage loan, review and confirm whether they are affected by a floor clause, since it is estimated that there are thousands of affected consumer in Spain, the expatriate community being especially vulnerable due to the language barrier. The difference between the interest that should be paid and the one actually paid, could mean consumers overpay thousands of euros per year, and if we consider all the years of the mortgage, the damage to the affected would mean many thousands of euros. The Supreme Court’s rulings numbers 241/2013 and 139/2015, said that usually these clauses are null and void because the apparently variable inter-

est rate loan becomes instead a fixed or minimum interest loan, and the banks have not clearly explained this at the time of making the contract with the consumers, together with all the consequences and possible harm that these clauses could cause. So, You should review your mortgage loan deed and your last receipt, and check whether the interest you are paying corresponds to the one

agreed at the time. If it is contrary, see if there is any minimum interest rate affecting you. There are thousands of victims who are overpaying thousands of euros in interest every year without knowing it. If you do not know if you are affected or not, send us an e-mail with a copy of your mortgage loan deed and your last receipt, and we will inform you without any commitment. Contact Us.

How safe is your Bank?

MONEY

THERE HAS been lots of press recently about the falling stocks markets and the falling oil price but little about the effect all this is having on the stability of the world’s banks. SO HOW safe is your Bank and the money you hold in it?

by

Regional Manager of Blacktower Costa Blanca

The value of most Banks shares have plummeted in recent months and just the other day ECB chief Mario Draghi warned that EU banks still face a number of face challenges, The world’s oldest bank Monte dei Paschi di Siena has been bailed out more times that most people have had hot dinners and the Continent’s premier casino bank Deutsche Bank is staggering under the burden of bad loans, poor trading and regulatory penalties. Sir John Vickers, who led the Independent Commission on UK Banking, said that UK banks should have more money in reserve, to enable them to survive any future financial crisis without a bailout from the taxpayer. So what should you do? The main thing is to make sure your money is in a cash account covered by the Deposit Guarantee scheme and that the amount is well within the limits for current and deposit accounts, so that is £75,000 or €100,000 per person, per banking institution. Ideally spread your risk across a few Banks and keep well under these amounts. Secondly consider diversifying your risk away from the Banking sector and look at medium to long term low risk investments or look at Banks that specialise in wealth preservation and that have no bad loans or debts on their balance sheet. What may you ask can be done? Who can I turn to for honest, professional advice? Blacktower Financial Management has been established for 30 years and have worked with clients through the good and the bad times, offering sound advice. The fatal Palm Weevil disaster by

Dick Handscombe Holistic gardener and author

DURING THE past twenty one years the Palm weevil or beetle has destroyed thousands of palm trees in Spain and other Mediterranean countries but there is no sign that a truly effective preventive or corrective cure is availabe while the problem is now worldwide.. What is the insect called? The scientific name is Phynchoporusferrugineos, the Spanish name is Picudarojaand there are a variety of English names such as Palm weevil, Red palm weevil, Red palm beetle, Palmworm(the larvae) and Giant palm weevil. Must be many others in other languages around the world. Where did it originally come from? Apparently the main origin was Indonesia and Polynesian islands. But there natural predators help to keep the weevil under control. Movement across the world has been by weevils hiding in exported goods and larvae in already infected palms. How fast has the weevil attacked the world? The major invasion of Spain started in 1994 apparently in diseased palms imported from Egypt. Other invasions include Saudi Arabia 1985, Portrugal 1996, France 2004, Canary islands 2005,Balearics 2006, Malta 2006, Italy 2006, Greece 2006 and California 2010. Imported trees from Asia have apparently accelerated the problem in a number of these countries. What is the life cycle of the palm weevil? One weevil can lay around 200 eggs every ten weeks, and these produce larvae which become mature weevils after seven to ten weeks. That’s a lot of new weevils in a year! The grub like larvae eat the inside of a palm tree for around a month before exiting from the trunk through a small tunnel to form a cocoon at the base of the tree before transforming into an adult beetle. At first it crawls but once dried out in the sun, as a butterfly does, it is said to fly up to five kilometres! How can one detect the presence of the beetle in your palm trees? There are several. Seeing crawling weevils around the base of a palm, seeing them in the leaves if on a ladder, hearing the crunching noise of the eating grubs through the bark of the trunk, chewed wood and a viscous smelly liquid coming out of holes, a fermenting smell in the area of a palm tree and of course dying fronds on top of the trunk. Can affected trees be cured successfully? Naturally this depends on how early in the life cycle

one notices the problem. If you sprayed or injected insecticides into the trunk as soon as a weevil has just laid eggs or the eggs just hatched out as small grubs one would have a chance. But if you can hear grubs through the trunk it depends how much of the soft core of the trunk has been eaten away. Two or three hundred grubs each eating and chewing a tunnel up to a metre long will soon take a palm tree beyond the point of no return as the palm will not be able to draw up and transport moisture and nutrients from the roots to the crown of the palm. This situation can be reached before there are any signs of dying fronds at the top of the palm. For instance two healthy looking palms fell over in a neighbours garden . Investigation showed that he centre was well hollowed out and full of growing grubs but luckily still needing a couple of weeks to be large enough to become chrysalises. On the other hand there is a palm in the garden of a neighbouring unoccupied house still firmly standing with fifty percent of the fronds dead and others on the way and just a kilometre down the road weevils were flying out of a dead palm alongside the town hall that had not been removed for burning. Naturally such situations can only lead to a further spread of the pest. What insecticides can be used and when? The general message is that preventive spraying or injections is best done eight times a year, especially in the spring and autumn. Once a palm is affected killing the larvae is important to stop adult weevils developing and spreading the disaster. The latest communication from our town hall is that Chlorpiritos 48%, Imidacloprid 20% and Tiametoxan are approved for village parks and gardens and domestic gardens. These are either sprayed over the crown and trunk or injected into the trunk.

Jeyes fluid and neem oil are apparently also being used but with what effect we don’t know. What should be done with dead palms? An information sheet made available by our town hall a few years ago, but not since, asking that the following be done: When a palm tree is cut or falls down cut it into lengths and immediately drown visible grubs and then treat all cut ends and top and bottom of the tree with one of the previously mentioned products. Then wrap up each length in plastic and bag up the fronds from the crown of the palm. Then phone the nominated local number, available from town halls, to arrange for the palms to be transported away for incineration. Note that dragging the fronds around or tying them in bunches and leaving at the gate to await a weekly garden rubbish collection could lead to the distribution of eggs and small grubs. What types of palms are affected? In the main it has been the Canary Island palm (phoenixcanariensis)and the coco palm(phoenix dactylifera) but cases of Washingtonias and twenty other varieties have been reported. The way ahead. We can only suggest to readers that they are doubly alert to the risk to their palms, take precautionary preventive actions using qualified licensed persons, move fast if problems are observed and plant no further palms in their gardens. As with the loss of geraniums through the geranium moth the Spanish and other Mediterranean scenery will be less interesting but at least there are many alternative plants listed in my book ‘How to use less water in your garden’.’, including tropical looking cotyledons, to plant up.

Scanned Document Hello, Aunty Virus. I have scanned a hospital document onto my laptop, with the intention of translating it from Spanish to English. However, when I place my cursor over the text, the cursor changes from an arrow to “rifle cross-hairs”, and will not allow me to highlight text, in order to copy it. The scanned document is in Adobe pdf form. Please advise, Derek Reply: When you scan a document, normally that scan is saved as a graphic file ie a picture, so, naturally, you will not be able to select any text from that image to paste elsewhere. What you need is some Optical Character Recognition, or OCR software. OCR enables you to convert different types of documents, such as scanned paper documents, PDF files or images captured by a digital camera, into editable data. Some versions of Microsoft Office have OCR Document and Imaging, but this is not part of the default installation, so you may have to go to the MS Office installation programme and select it for install. There are some free OCR software programmes available to download, and there are some online OCR converters also. See www.onlineocr.net/orwww.free-ocr. com/. Note that you will have to read through the document you have scanned, to ensure there are not any errors, as OCR is not 100% correct! Response Many thanks for this info.

‘Not connected to internet’ Hi Aunty, Please can you help me? For some reason, my laptop won’t connect to the internet (wireless). I’ve had no problems with this before. Last night it just said ‘not connected to internet’, and, in the options list, my provider was not visible. However, when I plug in the Ethernet cable, it works. I’m on Windows 10, laptop, Compaq Presario CQ57. Look forward to your reply, thank you, Jackie

Response: Firstly, determine if any other devices can connect to the WIFI signal, as this will determine if it is an issue with the modem router, or your PC. The simplest cure for no WIFI signals is to simply reboot (ie turn off and turn on) your internet modem router. Within minutes it should have re-acquired the signals that it needs and then should be available on your laptop. The next thing to check is that your laptop actually has WIFI turned on. On some laptops, there may be a switch or button that does this, which may have been “knocked” or pressed, disabling the WIFI on the laptop. Finally, W10 can run diagnostics to help determine if it can find and fix the problem. This usually involves rebooting the laptop’s WIFI device.

Life Coach

WITH A background in family and matrimonial mediation, Life Coach Sara Bell helps Readers with their daily worries. If you are having difficulties with relationships, family, work or any other aspect of your life, then help is at hand.

Friends don’t care I started the menopause early at 45, and am going through hell. I never dreamt the change of life would be this bad. Hot flushes that knock me off my feet in the day, depression, panic attacks, and not sleeping at night. I feel exhausted, and suicidal. My girlfriends are not being understanding or sympathetic at all, which I am feeling very hurt by. None of them have experienced the menopause yet, and they are all but telling me to live with it because it’s natural. For some women, symptoms of the menopause can be very severe. Please don’t suffer - there is help available, and your first port of call should be your GP. As for your friends, it’s hard to understand why they are not giving you support, but of course they haven’t yet reached that stage, and perhaps they need to walk a mile in your shoes before they can really understand how awful it can be. Look up some information online - there are Forums where you can talk to other sufferers.

What more can we do? I am so sorry for my boyfriend - his life is very complicated. His son is slightly Autistic, and is a drug addict. He is violent to his family, commits burglaries, and lives rough with other users. My boyfriend has tried to help him, but is told to stay out of his life, until he turns up on the doorstep asking for money. We desperately want to move in together and have a peaceful future. The only relief we get is when his son goes into prison. It’s a sad situation, and the Autism suggests this lad cannot be reasoned with easily. I imagine your boyfriend has spoken to authorities about some kind of help / care? If the family are being subjected to violence, then they must protect themselves, and this kind of abuse cannot be allowed to continue. Some therapy might help your boyfriend come to terms with how things impact on him as a parent. He’s done everything he can. May be it’s time to say ‘we have tried’, and to think about yourselves and your future. Write to Sara in confidence. A pseudonym will be used if you wish. Sara reads all letters and can give a personal reply. Email your question to agonyaunt@roundtownnews.com or Sara is available for private consultations, telephone 650 054 467.

Shades of grey by Jack Troughton

ARTIST NATALIA Ribes Hankins paints huge pictures dominated by shades of grey to produce an elegant view of the world. Her latest work involves ‘Zeppelins’, massive airships from the past but given a modern twist in Natalia’s abstract style that adds a romantic air to the subject. The Javea-based painter, who is half English and was formerly trained at university in Valencia, has also retained her fascination for architecture. She said she had “progressed from the figurative to architecture and now to abstract.” Earlier paintings focussed on grand buildings in European cities. A pair of London spires was beautifully painted in pastel colours and the artist continues to include the two towers in her abstract work. Natalia, who works and teaches in a Javea studio, said some of her work was on canvas measuring four metres by two metres, while other pictures were much smaller. She has also painted portraits of her family, the pictures taking on an appearance of a sepia-coloured photograph through the sparing use of colour. AIRSHIP “My new paintings are influenced by airships, Zeppelins, but they always have architecture in them; it is a question of composition,” she said. “I have reduced colour into grey.” Currently Natalia’s work is being exhibited at the Museum of the University, ’70 veces 7’ (70 times 7) can be seen until 28th February and is well worth a visit. “It is a great opportunity for me – it is not about selling

work but putting on a great show. It is a great honour,” she said. “There are about 45 pieces; some small drawings on paper, larger work on canvas, and some pictures on wood.” She said the name of the exhibition was taken from the Bible. “Jesus is asked how many times a person must forgive, he is asked should it be seven and he replies it must be 70 times seven. To me it is beautiful, the suggestion of infinity.” Natalia undertakes commissions and is often asked to paint portraits and will also take on students wanting to learn to paint. “This is very important; I am a painter but a painter who wants to eat!” ’70 veces 7’ is being exhibited in the Sala Polivent, at the Museum of the University of Alicante, Sant Vicent del Raspeig, Alicante. It is open daily between 9am and 8pm, and 10am until 2pm at the weekend. For details visit www.mua.ua.es. For more information – Natalia’s website is being reconstructed call her on 649 966 072.

 Despite what has been going on lately you are well ready to give somebody a taste of their own medicine; and though it has regrettably come to this there is a reason why you should think again. Not only are there some related problems but you would open a whole can of worms just to get revenge when all you should really do is to walk away! Venus strikes while the iron is hot and the current love you are afraid to reveal may just be a cover-up. You do not have to please everybody and it would be wise not to even try. Complications are abundant with the overlay of Neptune and Ceres and the former finally calls time on something that demands your immediate attention....and for good reason. It seems as if finances should be under the microscope this week as you begin to realise that someone just isn’t paying their way. Whilst any economies would help the matter greatly it is clear that an economic assessment of the current situation would put you in a far better place to reschedule payments and in so doing balance up the books. You give with a good heart but this is a system that gives you over to be held in check when you try to call in the shots. Play very safe by having an escape plan in motion since you have nothing now to lose and everything to be gained by some relevant probing. Dig deep because so far all anyone has done to remate is to merely scratch the surface. Pride comes before a fall and you know that although you have to love yourself others need the appropriate imput right now that only you can give. The Sun clearly illuminates your pathway and tells you where to tread, but the motivation of others shouldn’t be the impetus for a job well done; it should be your inspiration to see all this to the bitter end. As usual you are in two minds: dammed if you do and dammed if you don’t, but it matters not that you have to stall for time, and under the current circumstances it would be the best thing you could do. Somebody has got hold of the wrong end of the stick in matters which really do not concern them anyway, but your decision, later this week, is final! Flirty Venus speeds across the Cosmos, encountering the hotspot formed by the coalition of a Connective Mercury with a Wily Saturn. The need to come clean about something is a total waste of time because you have been given conflicting advice, and until the full truth is told you have absolutely nothing whatsoever to say on the matter. Saturn is beguling but has a method in the current madness that may just take you over the edge. You have over reacted to something that was expected to make things easier for you, when all you really want to know is the truth; and it is this that you are entitled to. Look before you leap because still waters really do run deep and you have other fish to fry! As progress slows down to a standstill you realise that what could have been would be a compromise and what is curently to order is the very right thing to do. Your conscious knows the difference between good and bad, and what is good for the goose right now is great for the gander too. Leave no stone unturned in the process. Time was when you would have taken things on the chin but you woke up and smelled the coffee when you saw a good thing coming. It is hard to please all of the people all of the time but you could try, and just being inactive is a feeble waste of time in the current scheme of things, when there is definitely work to be done by all who are concerned. Make hay while the sun shines because this is a great week ahead for you to make forward plans. You need to plan your escape well as a brief trip away turns out to be the very best gift to be offering to someone. Before you pack your bags and head on out, do your sums, check the details and accept no compromise, just know you are taking control. Neptune conjuncts with Ceres as the time is called on a project that was heading out of control. Your skills are needed to allow those who work together with you to be grounded and earthed with the aim of making the subtle changes now or never. You have not enlisted full support, but time is on your side as you rightly call in the shots!

If It’s Your Birthday This Week

You may have prejudged a situation wrongly, but there is a reason for everything and now a vacancy sees you swallowing your pride and eating humble pie. There is work to be done, so go do it!

Ritual

NOTHING IS more deeply relaxing than to avail yourself time to enjoy some ritual bathing.

It doesn’t involve a spa bath or a jacuzzi, although such luxurious equipment may indeed help you to savour the pleasures of this remarkable bathing technique; that soothes, calms and relaxes. It also helps you to establish a good spiritual balance, and helps you to open the body chakras, inducing a meditative state to promote wellbeing. Helping you to feel good as well as opening your psychic centres this simple bathing technique helps you to make all the right connections; whilst bringing calm and tranquility into your busy life. You will need a shower and a bath. Maybe light a few candles and play some favourite relaxing music. Dimming the lights sets the scene too. The first stage is to wash the body clean with soap in the shower. Here you can sponge, scrub and exfoliate your entire body to your heart’s content. When the body is rinsed, dry the whole body and wrap yourself in a towel or a bathrobe. The next stage means running a bath for your ritual bathing. Check the temperature is right and add some essential oils to the bath if you have any. Lavender, Rose, Jasmine or Ylang Ylang are wonderful and very potent aromatic calmatives. If you do not have any essential oils add a few drops of olive oil and a quick squirt of your favourite cologne or perfume. As with all oils they will float on the surface of the water, so add in addition a little milk or dried milk powder and stir in a clockwise direction to pranatise the water and dissolve the oils into it. Your ritual bath is ready and waiting for you. As you enter the water you should feel very relaxed and centred. Start to clear your mind and tick off the pressures of the day by unloading all your thoughts on an imaginary set of post it notes; this should leave you ready to enter an advanced state of relaxation. With no need to clean your body this bath acts as a temple for you to worship your body as you slip all but your head under the water. Feel the scent of the oils and the comfort of the warm water. Now it is time to hold your nose, shut both eyes and to duck your head under the water seven times, always seven times because seven is the magic number. Each time you dip under the water make a wish for something positive to happen to you. Be very unafraid to ask for what you need to happen right now and tell yourself that you deserve to have it to enrich your life. This process of asking should not have any undertones of begging whatsoever, just ask very plainly for just what you want or need right now. Be honest and frank, and forget it if you think that this is selfish because it is not selfish to have wants needs and desires, and getting them is self assuring and empowering. Nothing could stop you from sharing with others the benefits of your fortunate blessings, but this bathing ritual is for you and you alone. Nothing takes away tension like a soothing bath and after your ritual bathing is complete and you are relaxed and calm, wrap yourself in towels and leave your body to dry itself. Make no attempt to dry and just relax and allow the towels to absorb any moisture. Lie down and rest and visualise your gifts being brought to you as your completed bathing ritual brings you well being and enlightenment, balancing the chakras and bringing peace and serenity back into your life. At this stage it is optional if you wish to meditate a little but the setting is right, and if you fall asleep well, that doesn’t matter either, the important element of the ritual was to bathe, and you did it. Try using this useful tool to relax and wind down. It is a lot cheaper than a spa day and it leaves you feeling very special, body aware and closer than ever to Spirit. I hope you enjoy it!

KENNY, HOW long after death does it take to enter the Spirit World? Petra C. Petra, the journey does not have an agenda or a timetable and it follows no organised route or pattern. The journey can be remarkably quick for some people and it is far slower for others. Spiritual knowledge doesn’t get you there any quicker but for some the etheric coating of the soul takes time to propel, and this delays the travelling time. More important than time itself is the need to arrive intact and safe, but nothing can be preplanned or orchestrated until the set time for departure actually comes. I hope that this helps you!

Bang On For Streeters Cats ‘n Dogs Aid by patricia thompson

LETS ROCK Shows have a unique double rock n roll experience at Los Rosales on Saturday February 20th. This will be the first time that 2 bands have played on one night. Both bands, The Streeters and Bang!, are trios from Murcia, who pride themselves on being totally live. The 2 Rock ‘n Roll bands are leaders in their field and bring a twist of blues to the music, covering all eras. Bang are unique by using a traditional Flamenco box (Cajón) instead of a drum, plus a pulsating keyboard, which creates the most amazing sound. This is the last chance for fans to see young Austin Slack in The Streeters line up, as he has been selected to play for the Pink Floyd tour, which will last a year, and play to tens of thousands of people. This is a phenomenal achievement for a 16 year old boy. Organisers are hoping for a ‘battle of the bands’ jam and, with a guest appearance from local vocalist Dave The Hat, there is plenty for everyone to enjoy. The raffle will be held by local charity, Cats ‘n Dogs Aid Association. The Rojales based

charity was formed in 2012, and its aim is to aid abused and abandoned dogs, and control the feral cat population by a programme of sterilization. By keeping the cats both healthy and non reproductive, this helps neighbourhoods with animal related problems. They also foster and re-home animals, with over 200 cats

already having been adopted. Tickets are now on sale for 15€, with a 2 course meal, from Restaurante Los Rosales, Guardamar, Cards ‘n More, La Marina, Hire Centre, San Luis, Post Box, Doña Pepa, Cats ‘n Dogs Aid, Quesada and The Card Place, Benimar. Star quality

by JACK TROUGHTON

YOUNGSTERS AND adults on the Costa Blanca can brush up on their performing skills with the arrival of Studio 23 Javea. The curtain went up on the new venture last Friday evening when Mayor Jose Chulvi cut the ribbon to officially open premises in Javea Port’s Avenida de Lepanto. Studio 23 Javea Performing Arts Company offers facilities for all ages. It has studio space, and offers qualified dance instructors, health and fitness professionals, a crèche, smoothy bar and shop. Mayor Chulvi said: “I am very happy to be here at the official opening of Studio 23. I wish you every success and I am confident it

will do very well.” Owner Xenia Bragagnini said Studio 23 offered everyone facilities to have fun, keep healthy, and express themselves without judgement. “Everyone has the ability to move; if you can move you can dance and if you can speak, you can sing,” she said. Xenia said not every child that came through the door would follow a career in show business but Studio 23’s qualified staff would “make them the best performer they can be” and help them learn “important life skills”. And she added: “We are one team and one family. Together we can help your children. Together we will help your children become something special. Only the stars are the limits.”

Paella for charity THE PARADISE bar, in Albir, hosted a paella afternoon at the weekend, to help raise funds for Majbrit Jessen. Nick, owner of the Paradise bar in Albir, provided homemade paella, with all the proceeds going towards the “gofundme” charity page set up to help Majbrit get a lifesaving operation. Nicky Chapman, who organised the event said, “thank you so much to Nick for supplying and cooking the delicious paella, and all those who came along and donated money.” The afternoon raised 655€ with a further 195€ being donated from a close friend of Majbrit, Lynny Manning. Lynny, and all her work colleagues, had been raising money throughout the week, selling homemade soup, cupcakes and having a dress-up day, which meant that the total of the two events has added a further 850€ to the charity funds. The Cucaracha Club world première by PATRICIA THOMSPON WAY BACK in 2008, a San Luis actor decided to make a film as a community project. Despite many setbacks over the years, it is now a completed feature film, with no less than 3 quality songs written especially for the production.

The title track, The Cucaracha Club, is sung by local artiste Chloe Leigh, and backed by The Fabulous Replays. Verity Jo Spencer Hall sings “Give it Wings”, and international comedy entertainer Stevie Spit sings “Don’t Block Out The Light”, all of these penned by Peter Taylor. The team are immensely proud of the high standards achieved by these very talented performers. Furthermore, all 3 singers play parts in the film. This was a ‘no budget’ production and a community project, and Julie Kay took on the task of fund raising. Yvonne Haughton helped with the translations and sourced some fantastic American cars. Yvonne also translated the script for the subtitles that will appear on screen for Spanish viewers. Clive Gray computer and technical wizard, became lead cameraman. Clive is also a Director of Siesta Productions, a company set up in order to obtain the required permissions to film in public places in and around Torrevieja. Local Radio Station owner and presenter, Rai Woods, directed the film, taking under his wing as an assistant, Billie Anthony’Gaddess. Billie, along with Philip Stephen Routledge, wrote the screen play. Add into the mix, the legal advice of Charlotte Howarth, and there you have the hard working production team, who had absolutely no idea just what they were letting themselves in for. Filming started on 1st September 2015 at the Delfin Submarine in Torrevieja. It was hot on the harbour (40º) and hotter still in the submarine. The film has its World Première in Torrevieja on March 10th at the Virgen Del Carmen Theatre. The Trailer and Music Video to the title track are available to view on You Tube. Just search for The Cucaracha Club or Siesta Productions. The Cucaracha Club single is available for download from iTunes and other download sites. Ashley proves that size really is everything!

ZOELLA IS a YouTuber, a person who posts all sorts on the site. She´s from the Wiltshire village of Lacock and attained quite a reputation in 2014 with her debut novel ´Girls Online´ which had the highest first-week sales of a first-time novelist since compiling such records began. She´s here because of a photo she took in 2014, one she called ´random man and his dog,´ with a caption that read “if you know this man, let him know these pictures exist as they may make him smile!” Discovered by his wife, the man is Pink Floyd frontman and guitarist Dave Gilmore. Hey! Hey!

BACK IN days of yore boys wanting to be train drivers and the girls wanted to be models, nowadays its more likely boys would want to race in Formula 1, but I fancy the catwalk is still the dream for the girls. This is certainly the case for 28 year old Ashley Graham from Lincoln, Nebraska even although she´s what’s termed ´plus-sized.´

She was discovered when she was just 12 by I & I agency while shopping at Oak View Mall in Omaha, and has gone on to adorn several top fashion mags like Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Glamour and Latina. Ashley has made it to the main feature today as she has stepped outside the box having, instead of wearing clothes, put on a swimsuit and was part of a photo shoot for Sports Illustrated. She posted on Instagram last week “It’s official - I’m a swimsuit model!! This is a dream come true, thank you to everyone who stood up for curves, our voices were heard and together we can help me win Rookie of the Year!” Sports Illustrated is running a competition for new models and wrote about Ashley “she´s an advocate for beauty of all shapes and sizes and is clearly at home in front of the camera, she has a lot of experience there,” before adding “Ashley absolutely stuns in the photo, looking camera-ready, tan and authentic!” Ashley appeared at a Forbes summit last year and said at the lectern “I’m using my body to let other women know that imperfections are okay, cellulite, rolls, curves, the things that jiggle that ‘shouldn’t be jiggling’… it’s okay.” Funny as well as smart words that suggest the stick insect/anorexic model look now has a very real competitor. Get in line girls. THE NOW Sir Van Morrison, 70, was born in Ireland, and ten days ago at Buckingham Palace he was knighted by Prince Charles, a man who could well have boogied like most of us have to Van the Man´s mercurial song ´Brown Eyed Girl.’ “I’ve been in the business for 53 years” said he “not bad for a blue-eyed soul singer from Belfast. I enjoy performing live in small clubs the most, the bigger places are for financial survival, the bigger places enable me to play small clubs occasionally. “The knighthood is for services to the music industry and tourism in his native Northern Ireland! Yoo the man Van!

A LOCK of John Lennon´s hair goes under the hammer in Dallas tomorrow, and as it was part of his ´mop-top, ´ Heritage Auctions believe it will sell for in excess of $10,000 (£7,000). The lock was apparently acquired from a German hairdresser who trimmed Lennon´s hair in Hamburg in 1966 before he began filming ´How I Won The War.´ The movie depicted the WW2 misadventures of British troops led by an inept commander. Heritage Auctions said the lock of hair had been in the hairdresser’s possession for nearly 50 years. I hope he gave it a shampoo and set!

MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY’S 4 minute acceptance speech at the Academy Awards in 2014 is the longest in its history. The Oscars have been having all sorts of grief over the big names that are boycotting the event because of the lack of black nominees, and now they´ve attracted more attention saying 45 seconds is all the winners will have to say thanks! An autocue for victors will list the names of people they need to thank, so no risk of upsetting someone, and if they drag it on, a hook will appear from the wings and pull them off! I made that bit up!

AS PREDICTED Trainspotting 2 with the original cast will happen and filming begins on May 16th. “That’s only 113 days to go!” author Irvine Welsh confirmed on his podcast, adding “We have all the team now and are opening an office in March!” Excellent! On the 20 years that have passed Robert Carlyle said to the NME “Without giving anything away, maybe some of them haven’t really moved on, that’s what the audience is going to have to go through with them, this film is going to be very emotional for people.” Under the seat time! TOM HIDDLESTONE recently turned 35, and to celebrate by posting a picture of himself, bare torso, promoting his latest movie ´High-Rise´ based on J.G. Ballard’s novel of the same name. The film has quite a bold plotline about the residents of a self-sufficient apartment block who slowly descent into barbarism … yep that’s pretty bold! Sienna Miller, Luke Evans, Elisabeth Moss, Jeremy Irons and Ryan Shearsmith are also in the movie directed by award-winning director Ben Wheatley. High-Rise goes on general release in UK cinemas on March 18. Not under the seat … again!

Past Simple Tense Translation of text Last week I promised you a translation of a short text. I hope you’re not expecting too much as it isn’t very exciting. I will translate it first and make a few comments at the end.

Yesterday I woke up at seven o’clock as usual. It was a working day and I had to get up to take my children to (secondary) school. I couldn’t wake the younger one up straightaway because she was sleeping deeply and didn’t want to get up. My other daughter got up more easily and went off to the kitchen to have breakfast. I had a shower, got dressed and had breakfast as well and then we went to school by car, arriving just on time. When I got back home I read my e-mails and the newspaper headlines on the Internet. I spoke to two or three people on the phone and had an English-style cup of tea with milk. After various other domestic and professional tasks, like putting on the washing machine and preparing photocopies, I picked up my things and went to work in Torrevieja. After work I had lunch, also in Torrevieja, and relaxed a bit. In the afternoon I did the shopping and when I got home, put it all away in the kitchen. My daughter phoned me to tell me where she was and then I sat down again at my computer to work. Later I went out on a few errands and after supper at home I watched my favourite

programme on television. I went to bed about twelve o’clock and fell asleep straightaway. Well I hope you managed to overcome the excitement and get to the end. The main reason for the text is to provide a framework for the use of the past simple tense, which also contrasts with the past continuous tense, and the use of the infinitive as I mentioned last week. You might be interested to notice how many reflexive verbs there are, and also how they work in various sentences. When the reflexive verb has an ending change the reflexive pronoun goes in front (“me desperté”, “me duché”, “se levantó” etc.), but when the reflexive verb is in the infinitive form, it is usual (although not obligatory) to tack the reflexive pronoun on to the end of the verb (“tuve que levantarme”, “no quiso levantarse” etc.) It is also possible to separate the reflexive pronoun from the infinitive (“me tuve que levantar”, “no se quiso levantar”). This is perhaps slightly less common but equally valid. You often find this word order in songs if it fits it better with the rhythm. The songs are usually about more interesting things than getting up in the morning, although, believe it or not, an emblematic song of the eighties in Spain is entitled “Hoy no me puedo levantar” – honestly! See you next week.

New builds and renewable energy (Part 1) The EEC 201031UE directive, declares that all new buildings that are constructed from year 2020 (2018 for public buildings) should have an almost zero power consumption. Even though the directive does not include a specific definition of the conditions that must comply with these buildings, thus allowing each country to specify the meaning of nearly zero energy consumption in its climate and technological context, the concept implies a very high level of energy efficiency for these future buildings and propose that most of the energy used must come from renewable sources, this can be generated on-site or in the vicinity of the building. Is it achievable? Following this main objective for the year 2020 at the moment believed to be unachievable (at least by yours truly) the Spanish government have thought necessary to tighten up the legislative screw one complete turn and has vomited out a new regulation which in a nutshell restricts energy consumption greatly in future homes. It is true that the building sector has a relevant impact both on global energy consumption in Spain, since just the residential sector represents a 17% of total energy consumption and a similar percentage in gas emissions (more than one ton per household). Apart from this energy saving context there is the fact that Spain is characterized by a high dependency on energy from abroad, near to 80% comes from other countries, far higher than the European average of 54%. It is also appropriate to note the important technical advances that have occurred in the building sector since 2006,

enabling us to achieve levels of energy efficiency in buildings far superior to previous years. How the new regulation will affect new housing? Simply by establishing new low global energy demand and energy consumption indicators that we architects have to comply with in our initial design. We have been advised that this regulations will be getting tougher in coming years, reaching its peak in year 2020, (2018 for public buildings), where our buildings must not use any none-renewable energy o practically none. This new regulation called DB HE 2013 establishes for the first time a limitation of energy consumption for buildings of new construction and also on rehabilitation of existing buildings, and uses a non-renewable primary energy consumption indicator. The limitation to the energy consumption of buildings includes the consumption of non-renewable primary energy necessary to satisfy the energy demands of heating and cooling, hot water, ventilation and, in the case of non-residential buildings mechanical equipment, which also includes lighting. The used indicator is the same indicators in energy certification. This indicator is also included on the label of energy efficiency, together with the main indicator concerning CO2 emissions. Homes on the Coast must not use more than the 40Kwh/m2 per year. The percentage of energy allowed for each household will depend on its locality, obviously, a home on the high mountains of Burgos with temperatures in winter that may fall to -10Cº will require more energy than a home in Torrevieja.

Spain has been divided into different climatic zones and a limited number of Kwh/m2 is provided to each home, values that range from the 40Kwh/m2 per year for “α” (More climatically benign zone such as Canary Islands and Cadiz) zones, to 70Kwh/m2 per year for the climatic zone “E” situated in north Spain. To achieve compliance with these limitations of consumption of not renewable energy is necessary to control the following factors: 1. The energy demand of the building, understood would theoretically have to supply appliances ensuring conditions of comfort to its users, irrespective of their installations or technical systems. This concept is affected by the actual characteristics of the building: location, orientation, design and construction features of the surround, sunscreens, etc. 2. The actual installations or technical systems used for air conditioning, hot water, appropriate ventilation and lighting. The application of technical systems to ensure the conditions of comfort allows us to determine, from the energy demanded and the efficiency of the systems used, which must be supplied to the building. In this regard, the equipment efficiencies have been updated to consider the consumption in those homes which the installation have not been upgraded, so that they are in line with technical evolution and appliances currently available on the market, and it does not penalise the option of not having conditioning systems. The conversion of primary energy consumption to final energy consumption is carried out through the application of a certain coefficients, which take into account the losses in the processes of transformation, transport, storage and distribution of each of the employed energy.

The sound vibrates the ear drum (22) which in turn moves the tiny bones (14, 10 and18) in the Middle ear. This movement transmits vibration to the cochlea (4) in the Inner Ear where they are received by fragile microscopic hair cells that covert vibration into nerve impulses for onward transmission by auditory nerve to the brain for recognition. It is very important as human beings to use our sense of hearing. Losing the sense of hearing can completely change a person’s way of living. We should be properly educated in how to care for our sense of hearing by knowing how it works and preventing common causes of hearing loss. The ear consists of three main parts and each performs

a vital function in receiving and interpreting sound and it is very important that they function together perfectly. Permanent hearing loss can occur once any of these parts encounters a problem. For example, the hair cells in the Inner Ear are fragile and

some die as a function of disease, head injury, medications, exposure to noise and age. These conditions cannot be medically or surgically corrected and the best treatment for hearing loss from damage to the hair cells or auditory nerve is, in the majority of cases, hearing aids.

If you have a concern about your hearing then call Richard G Sykes, RHAD FSHAA of Premier Hearing Services on 659 644 106 (premierhearing@hotmail.co.uk / www.premierhearingaids.es) for professional and personal advice. Richard covers all of the Costa Blanca area, and offers a free Hearing Test. The latest digital hearing aids are available and Richard is able to offer 50% off UK prices. Fundraising for World Kidney Day World Kidney Day takes place on 10th March 2016, which this year focusses on the important theme of Kidney Disease and Children – Act Early to Prevent It. All eight Specsavers Opticas stores in Spain have announced that they are getting behind this event and will be raising money and distributing information about the cause from 15th February until 15th March. The global optical brand have been inspired to support this important cause, after Martin Blake the Director of Specsavers Opticas in Mallorca came to the rescue of his brother-in-law and donated a kidney in March 2015. His brother-in-law was seriously ill, receiving dialysis at the hospital for seven hours, five times a week whilst he waited for a donor and became weaker. The waiting list for kidneys in the UK is over four years and the doctors didn’t think he had that long to live. Martin bravely put himself forward as a donor and since the transplant his brother-in-law is responding very well. Throughout 2015 Martin and his team have been raising money for Kidney Research and to date have collected 1,300€ for this worthy cause. All the other stores were so impressed by his sacrifice and commitment, that they have also got behind Kidney Research and will all be raising money for the Spanish kidney research charity ALCER in the run up to World Kidney Day. Martin commented, “It was amazing to be able to save a life by becoming an organ donor and seeing the difference

it has made to my brother-in-law’s life has been wonderful. However, we’re aware that on average a kidney transplant only lasts 10-15 years and then this cycle could start again if new treatments or cures haven’t been discovered. This is why I am now raising money to fund the research which will hopefully find the cure and stop the misery of dialysis, and waiting for a donor. I am delighted that the other seven Specsavers stores have joined me to fundraise

and raise awareness of this low profile disease.” To find out more about World Kidney Day and how you can get involved visit www.worldkidneyday.org To support Kidney Research pop into your nearest Specsavers Opticas store and make a donation. To find your nearest store visit www.specsavers.es Information about ALCER and how you can become a supporter can be found on their website www.alcer.org

Hyundai i30 DIESEL ENGINES are still too noisy, in my opinion. I’ve driven Jaguars, Audis and BMWs and found that it is still easy to distinguish a diesel from a petrol-driven car by the tell-tale rattle.

The appeal of diesels has also been tarnished by the fact that petrol engines are now becoming increasingly efficient; it is not uncommon for one to return over 50mpg these days. But if a diesel car is packaged correctly it can still be an attractive proposition. This brings me to the second generation Hyundai i30, which has frankly surprised me. The designers have gone to town and produced something that is noticeably different from the usual Fords, Vauxhalls, Renaults and Peugeots; I do like that grille and the sweeping curves. The most striking thing about this car though is its sheer quietness. It’s that quietness that led me to believe I was driving a petrolfuelled car for the first day of the test. It was only when I read the specification that I realised this was a diesel. Stand outside with the engine running it is barely audible, as you can hear in the video at testdrives.biz. Sit inside with it ticking over and again you can barely hear it. This is a phenomenal achievement especially in a car that is priced at well under £20,000. This really does put far more expensive competitors to shame. This model is also fitted with engine stop/start which is very reliable and cuts in at all the right points, helping return over 70mpg. Usually that diesel rattle kicks in on start-up but again a very smooth operation.

My surprise doesn’t stop here either because inside this 1.6litre model there is plenty of room, too. Bear in mind that this is a very similar sized car to the upmarket Audi A3 I recently tested and yet it is far more spacious. In the Audi it really was a struggle to get two cumbersome baby seats in the rear, mainly because the front seats did not fold far enough forward. In the Hyundai this wasn’t an issue. There was also more legroom front and back. With steering mounted controls for the cruise control, radio and telephone, the important things are close to hand. My one qualm is that because the volume controls etc. are on the steering wheel they do not stay in the desired position when going round a bend or a roundabout. Therefore, if the volume needs to be turned down for any reason the driver ends up resorting to

the volume knob on the stereo. Price: 20,972€ FACTS AT A GLANCE: 0-60mph: 11.5secs Top speed: 115mph Economy: 74.3mpg (extra urban) Power: 109bhp Watch the video at: www.testdrives.biz

Spanish Masters champions

by PATRICIA THOMPSON

LAST WEEKEND, Torrevieja Masters Beth Altabas and Vicki Connolly travelled to Mataró, Barcelona for the “II Spanish National Masters Long Distance 3 km Championships”. Master swimmers, from 37 clubs, came together on Sunday 14th February, in the outdoor 50m pool at the Joan Serra Complex, the home of Club Natación Mataró. With a strong,

cold wind blowing over the outdoor, beach based pool, racing started at 9:30am. Both Beth and Vicki swam hard to gain rewarding results. In the 70 – 79 age category, Beth won a gold medal, with a time of 58:37:01, giving her the Spanish record over the 3km distance in the 70-74 yrs age category. Vicki then continued in the same manner, winning a silver medal in the 50 –59yrs category, with a new time of 48:41:84, which gave Vicki the Spanish record in the 50-

54yrs age category. Both Beth and Vicki were over the moon with these results and, together with bonus points awarded for records, this placed Club Natación Torrevieja 7th overall in the club rankings. If you wish to join the masters team, or would like more information on swimming in Torrevieja, please contact Club Natación Torrevieja through Rosa 622 60 09 65 or Vicki 669 63 70 15 or by email on info@clubnataciontorrevieja.com.

Cartagena rugby sponsored by Car Broker Spain A BLUSTERY day on the coast of Cartagena saw a hard fought battle between Cartagena U18s and Orihuela U18s. The wind played a significant part in the first half, which ended with the home side holding a slender advantage at 14~10. The 2nd half was dominated by Cartagena, and this dominance was rewarded with 2 further tries, which were skilfully converted. Cartagena under 18’s are growing in confidence as the season progresses. This group of young men works well as a team, and team spirit is high. Overall, this was an excellent team performance in very tricky conditions. If you want to get involved in Spanish rugby, or just come and watch, old or young, male or female, call Peter on 660 17 03 55.

RBS six nations roundup

by PATRICIA THOMPSON

THE SECOND weekend of the 6 nations rugby usually sees things shake up, and this weekend was no exception. The first match on Saturday was a close contest between France and Ireland which saw France winning by just one point. This put France at the top of the table, with 2 consecutive wins The second match was between Wales and Scotland. Again this was very close, with Wales just beating Scotland to take an early second place in the league. Sunday saw Italy take on England, in Rome. RTN’s General Manager was there in Rome to witness a fantastic

game of 2 halves. The first half was very unexciting, with neither side taking control. The second half, however, was a complete contrast. The English coach had certainly injected something into the English players, who came out, after the interval, on fire and ready for a game of rugby. This was the first time any team has really looked like they deserve to win the title. Italy did not know what had happened, as England cruised to a 940 victory to lead the table. The next games will be over the weekend of 26th February, when we look forward to England taking on Ireland, Italy playing Scotland and Wales playing France.

Benitachell Bowls Club Winter League Report LAST WEEK Benitachell Bowls Club Winter League played at home against El Cid. Top rink this week was Alex Fisher, Terry Corner, Iris Gardiner and Bert McLean, with a final score of 24 – 9. Altogether, the teams achieved 11 of the 12 possible points. BBC Lions V Javea Opals The Lionesses won 20-14, while Annie Jones, Janet and Trevor Neale lost to Javea. Ron

Hawker, Dave Browne and Fely Croft won 2120, and Jinty Chamberlain, Rod Warnes and Jeff Richards won 20-17. The final score was 77 to 73 and 8 points to 2. BBC Tigers v FG Swallows A 67 to 63 shots victory gave the Tigers a 6 to 4 points win against a strong FG Swallows side.
