THE HORSES are on the track as the race to victory in the EU membership stakes got underway this week and much-fancied runners ´Leave´ and ´Remain´ cantered off on the four-month marathon that ends on the 23rd June finishing line. Television news, papers, and social media are now scrutinising every minor detail of campaign rhetoric to assess the chances of either side, while the pollsters – like bookies – fling out the ever-changing odds. To date, Prime Minister David Cameron is busy backing the brave new deal he won in foreign fields to convince voters ín´ is the place to be – Mayor of London, Boris Johnson nailed his colours to the óut´ team, which immediately put on a little spurt with the ´BoJo´ bounce. Referenda are notoriously fickle animals. Do voters carefully consider the pros and cons or is it merely a matter of red, white and blue against that blue flag featuring a lot of gold stars? At the end of the day, the side with the most support wins either way. Expats are in an unusual position. About half are entitled to have their say – the bitter pill for the remainder is the long-promised vote for life is not arriving in time. Sorry guys, you are mere spectators…blame those in the corridors of power for an inability to get organised; instead hiding behind excuses. However, those who can, please register to vote and play the game called democracy. Meanwhile, the postman delivering to RTN towers is suffering again. The readers´ postbag is full of concerns about rising levels of street crime. Spain remains a safe country but please exercise a little caution – in Hill Street Blues speak, be careful out there.

by IAN ASKEW SANTA LUCÍA Hospital, in Cartagena, had to re-open the pre-admissions unit this week, in order to rid the corridors of A&E of of 14 beds. The greatest influx of A&E patients was on Tuesday, at dawn, and compelled the A&E staff to keep patients in the corridors, while they were waiting to be assigned a room on the wards. The management of Santa Lucía Hospital was forced, on Tuesday morning, to re-open the pre-admissions unit (IPU), to accommodate A&E patients who had been waiting, some of them for up to 14 hours, for a bed in a ward to become available. Due to an influx of “unusual” cases, according to hospital officials, the waiting areas in and around A&E became full, with an overspill of 14 patients in the observation area, awaiting beds. This is the second time this year that the Santa. Lucía A&E department has become full to overflowing. The first was earlier this year when, for a three day period, patients and families had to wait in the corridors. On both occasions, the management reaction has been to re-open the pre-admissions unit. The hospital personnel group, which includes representatives of the major health unions, is aware of the problems of space in Santa Lucía’s A&E department, but the president of this group, Antonio Martínez, praised the measures taken by the hospital manager. The Minister of Health, Encarna Guillén, explained that the flu has arrived in the region, and, although much less virulent than in previous years, has contributed to the short-term overcrowding problem.

#NEWSBITES FOUR PASSENGERS INVOLVED IN A 2 SEATER CRASH FIREFIGHTERS FROM Mazarrón, a mobile unit of the Murcia Health Service, an ambulance, and a policía local patrol responded to the incident. One person was seriously injured after crashing the car he was driving into a wall on the N-332, linking the coastal towns of Mazarrón and Águilas. The victim suﬀered multiple injuries and was rushed to the Hospital Virgen de la Arrixaca, in Murcia. Inside the car were three more people, despite the car being only a two seater sports car. According to information released by the Emergency Coordination Centre, the incident occurred shortly after midnight last Saturday.

Valentine’s Day mugging by JACK THOUGHTON

BRAVE PENSIONER Irene Stafford is warning expats to be on their guard after falling victim to a brazen street robbery on Valentine´s Day just 100 yards from her home. The mugger struck at around 12.30pm as the 77-year-old walked with her friend Sandra along a main street in Los Alcazares and grabbed gold chains around her neck. Sadly, the thief ran off with a gold locket containing a lock of hair of her husband Don who passed away 16 months ago – a priceless and irreplaceable keepsake to Irene. And the incident happened at a time people are contacting RTN worried about the rising level of street crime in the Murcia town and other coastal communities popular with expats. “It was just awful and I feel so nervous now and scared to go out. I just don´t trust anyone – I have lived in Spain for the past 11 years and I have always felt more or less safe, but not anymore.” She said a youth aged about 20 was walking towards them having just crossed the road. “I just expected him to walk passed. He just dived straight at me and put his hand under my chin and with his other hand tried to grab the gold chains around my neck. “I was able to save some but he managed to get the gold locket. He broke the chain and ended up with the locket. “I pushed him away and I screamed and he just ran off with it in his hand. We could not run after him, we are both in our seventies but I shouted really loudly – I don´t usually swear but I did that day.” Irene, who is originally from Yorkshire, said her screams were heard and people came onto balconies to see what was wrong. Two men even gave chase in their car but the mugger ran down Isla De Tabarca and vanished despite the good Samaritans combing the area. IMPORTANT Irene has walked the streets of the area in the vain hope the robber threw the distinctive locket away. “The locket is very important to me, my husband died 16 months ago and it had a lock of his hair inside…it couldn´t be any dearer to me than that. “The locket just has so much sentimental value – I cannot replace it but to that lad it means nothing he will just sell it. I now wish I had retaliated more and given him something back but you just go into shock.” Irene, who has had a purse stolen before, underlined the growing problem of crime. “There has been a lot going on recently, it is terrible.” And she added: “Los Alcazares is such a nice town and it used to be lovely and you used to feel safe, although there would be the odd pick-pocketing but now there is more crime happening.” Irene did go to the police with an interpreter to report the crime and give a description of her attacker. She said he was tall and slim, well-dressed in a black tracksuit, with black short hair. “He was very tall and had to crouch to reach my throat. He must have seen an opportunity – perhaps because it was Valentine´s Day he wanted a present to give to his girlfriend. I hope e rots in hell.” Irene wants to warn everyone along the coast to take care and repeated the police advice; always wear jewellery under clothing. She also hopes someone will recognise the oval shaped locket which has the large letters Í´ and Irene Stafford ´D´ on both sides.

#NEWSBITES TRAGEDY AT AIRFIELD TWO MEN have died following a light aircraft crash at the weekend near Alicante. An ultralight plane crashed, on Sunday morning, at Mutxamel, killing both men on board, despite emergency service personnel’s efforts to save them. The light aircraft was travelling to the airfield in the town when it is believed to have struck power lines near the runway as it came in to land. Despite the attendance of fire crews and a medical helicopter, the accident was a recovery, rather than a rescue, of the two men.

Dog run over deliberately by police

POLICE OFFICERS in Wales said they were forced to run over a dog to stop it suffering. In the early hours of Monday the North Wales police received a call that a dog was running loose on the A55 dual carriageway, causing traffic to swerve, with several near collisions only just being avoided. The traffic officers were then forced to make a decision, which a spokesperson said was “not taken lightly” to run over and kill the runaway, because of the risk to human life. Darren Wareing, Chief Inspector for the traffic division, said “the control room received several calls shortly after 3am, saying that a dog was running loose on the A55. Our officers attempted several times to catch the animal, with one of them being bitten.” The dog was reported to be running in and out of the high speed traffic, but, as fears grew that there would be a serious crash, they had to consider what their options were. Wareing said: “The officers at the scene ruled out other methods of destruction on the grounds of public safety, and decided that to run over the dog at high speed would ensure that it did not suffer. Both officers have their own dogs and did not take the decision lightly.”

British fugitive arrested

A WANTED British man, who had ﬂed to the Costa Blanca, has been arrested in Alicante. Oﬃcers from the Fugitive Location Group of the Judicial Police Commissioner General, and the Group of Violent Crime UDEV of Alicante, arrested a man who was wanted on suspicion of four sexual assaults on a minor. The young girl, the daughter of his former partner, was aged just nine when the British man sexually assaulted her, with four incidents occurring between January 1991 and June 1993. The warrants originated from Dublin in Ireland where the attacks are recorded as taking place, and the man is now being held until he can be returned to face the original warrants.

Costas affected by African sand THE WEEKEND ended with many towns, up and down the coast, experiencing dull yellow, orange or pink skies, as sand from North Africa was lifted and carried to mainland Spain. The dust storms are a common meteorological hazard in arid and semi-arid regions. They are usually caused by thunderstorms, or strong pressure gradients associated with cyclones, that increase wind speed over a

wide area. The strong winds lift large amounts of sand and dust from bare, dry soils into the atmosphere, transporting them hundreds to thousands of kilometres. Luckily for most areas, the dust storm was not accompanied by rain. In the past, when the two meteorological events have occurred at the same time, cars, houses, and items such as patio furniture, have been left covered in a wet sandy stain.

Expat driving the wrong way by CAROLINE TYSZKA GUARDIA CIVIL have arrested a British man who was travelling along the AP-7 motorway in the wrong direction. Two incidents have been reported in the past week of drivers travelling the wrong way along major roads in the south of the Costa Blanca. A 42 year old British man from Orihuela was arrested by officers, having driven the wrong way down the AP-7, forcing many other drivers to take evasive action. The vehicle eventually collided with another car and, fortunately, there were no reports of anyone suffering more than minor injuries. When officers reached the scene, it became apparent that the British driver was showing “obvious signs of impairment” and was subsequently tested for alcohol and drugs. Tests proved positive for cocaine and cannabis, which resulted in the expat being arrested for reckless driving, and driving under the influence of drugs. In the second incident, officers arrested a man who was caught driving the wrong way on the road between Yecla and Villena, near Alicante.

BABY SUFFERS FROM MARIJUANA POISONING

A YOUNG baby was rushed to hospital in Alicante at the weekend, having ingested marijuana. A 14 month old baby boy had to be rushed to hospital by friends of the family, when the toddler became unresponsive at home on Saturday evening. The boy was immediately admitted into the intensive care unit of the hospital, where staff feared that he would not survive the night. On Sunday, it was reported that he was out of danger, as police officers began an inquiry as to how the toddler had come into contact with the drug. Officers reported that the child’s family were known to the authorities, and described them as “dysfunctional”, with many problems, with the parents being separated and the mother having custody. The investigation will look into how the baby came into contact with the drug, with initial reports, from questioning family members, not stating whether it was an accident or someone had given it to him.

BRITISH EXPATS are urged to register to vote and make their voices heard in the historic referendum over EU membership on 23rd June. As predicted in RTN three weeks ago; David Cameron has now set the date for the ballot and all those eligible to cast a vote under the controversial 15year rule must register, or re-register, to have their say. The Prime Minister maintains he has won a deal that is right to ‘remain’ within the European Union; the campaign to ‘leave’ has been bolstered by political heavyweights Michael Gove and Boris Johnson – the so-called ‘BoJo’ bounce. However, it also clear along the coast that there is anger for those expats disqualified from voting because of the time they have lived abroad – and growing worries about the future should Britain pull out of Europe. The UK Government has promised a ‘vote-for-life’ for all expats around the world but the legislation will not reach the statute books in time for the June ballot. But a Private Members Bill brought by MP Christopher Chope is due for a second reading in Parliament today (Friday). The Overseas Election Bill seeks to restore voting rights to all expats. Vice Consul Sara Munsterjhelm attended the Annual General Meeting of Calpe’s Association of foreign Property Owners on Tuesday and said it was important all those eligible to vote in the referendum registered. “It’s a referendum. The Government is going to respect the outcome; the government is putting the decision in the hands of the British people,” she said. IMPORTANT “The important thing is to make sure our voices are heard. If you are eligible – I know there are some who are not – it is important. Your vote does matter and your vote does count.” Ms Munsterjhelm said she understood the concerns over what would happen if there was a vote to leave the EU in June. “The Government has only just set the referendum date. At the moment, all the efforts on the part of Mr Cameron and the government are focussed on getting British nationals to stay in the EU. “If the vote goes to a ‘no’, and we are going to leave; all matters regarding things like health care, residency, and pensions will have to be renegotiated. “The Government will make sure that at all times at the top of the list is your welfare – I don’t want you to think that if we leave you are on your own; that’s not the message. Your welfare is and will always be the top priority.” It is believed there are around two million expats living in Europe – 100,000 are registered on the town hall ‘padron’ within the area covered by the British Consulate in Alicante. Told people barred from voting because of the time lapse were “aggrieved”, the Vice Consul said there was a pledge to extend the franchise before the next general election. “I know for such a crucial thing, the EU Referendum, you all want to vote and there is a large percentage who will not be able to,” she acknowledged. Anyone who was last registered to vote in the UK in the last 15 years can register or renew their registration at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote and fill in their details. They can vote by post, by proxy, or if in the UK on polling day, in person.

Facing up to dementia BRITISH CONSUL teams and expat support charities are working together in a bid to improve help available for people aﬀected by dementia.

The consulates in Alicante and Malaga and associations such as the Royal British Legion, Age Concern Espana, HELP, and Age Care, aim to provide a gateway to available support. Consulate teams hosted “learning events” this week in Alicante, Murcia and Malaga, led by UK-based dementia experts Sue Brewin and Su Burns. The meetings were aimed at informing support groups about the diﬀerent types of dementia and ways to overcome barriers to communicating with people aﬀected by the illness. Research by the Alzheimer’s Society estimates that the number of people diagnosed with dementia in Western

Europe will double by 2050. One in three people are likely to be aﬀected. As a result, support charities are likely to see an increase in the numbers of people seeking help and need more expertise in dealing with the problem. The Costas are home to large numbers of British residents; many are elderly and some have substantial care needs but they may have little or no resources or a family network to support them. QUALIFY And to qualify for help from Spanish social services, such as home help, British residents must be previously registered with the authorities – signing up on the ‘padron’ – the town hall register – and for the health service. However, they cannot meet all your needs. “I strongly urge expats to register on the padron and for healthcare now, before health issues arise. You can then access support from the Spanish system via the local health centre and town hall social services when you need it.” She added: “If you fail to register, then you are unlikely to get social services’ help later.” Dementia covers several types of brain disorder, including Alzheimer’s. There is no cure and the disorders are usually progressive; common symptoms include memory loss, confusion, speech diﬃculties, and problems in understanding. Ram raider gang arrested

GUARDIA CIVIL officers in Madrid have broken up their largest ram raiding gang and arrested 11 members of the network. Officers arrested ten men and one woman, aged between 18 and 25, who had been operating in the Madrid area over a period of time. The members of the group are charged with committing 64 robberies in phone shops, perfume shops, bars and restaurants, as well as the theft of luxury cars in the provinces of Madrid, Toledo and Guadalajara. Officers also recovered goods and vehicles to the approximate value of 1,200,000€. The gang used stolen vehicles to commit their raids, choosing particularly high powered cars to ensure a quick

getaway, as well as batons and sprays to disable shops’ security systems. In one attack, the raiders were detected leaving the scene travelling at 200 kph, and damaging other vehicles, as they made their escape. The group’s members are collectively accused of crimes of burglary, theft of vehicles, belonging to a criminal group,

dangerous driving, theft, falsiﬁcation of license plates and malicious damage. Following the arrests, properties were searched in Toledo and Madrid, where hand guns were discovered, along with various tools to assist in their crimes, as well as 500 containers containing perfumes, over 300 mobile phones and 10 vehicles.

GUARDIA CIVIL traffic officers in Córdoba have been hailed as heroes for saving a young baby’s life. The two traffic department officers were on patrol Saturday evening when they were approached by a woman who was clearly distressed and saying she needed help with her baby. The 18 month old boy was unconscious and not breathing, as the officers attended to him at the side of the road, on the A431 near to Villarrubia. Once they had managed to revive the little boy, they took him and his mother to the Reina Sofía maternity hospital in their patrol car. Reports are that the young boy is making a good recovery.

A CANADIAN serial killer, who had written his memoirs and smuggled them out of prison, has had his book withdrawn from sale, hours after it appeared online with Amazon. Robert Pickton, who was convicted in 2007 of murdering six women, had written the book, which protested his innocence, and smuggled it out of the Kent Institution prison where he is being held. The book, entitled “Pickton: In His Own Words”, was published by Outskirts Press in Colorado, who specialise in

helping authors self-publish their works. The Canadian multi-millionaire pig farmer reportedly confessed to 49 murders, although he was only convicted of six, with a further twenty cases being suspended. He now claims that he is innocent and was framed by the Canadian police. Pickton was sentenced to life in prison with no parole for at least 25 years, following the guilty verdict, where it was revealed that he fed the remains of some of the women to his pigs. Chocolate product recall THE GIANT company Mars has recalled thousands of its chocolate bars throughout Europe, following the discovery of plastic in one of its products.

The recall affects 55 countries, including the UK, France, Netherlands, Germany and Spain, with the company fearing more red pieces of plastic could be found in some of their most popular products. The company traced the problem back to their Dutch factory, and stressed that the recall “only involved the products that were made at the factory in Veghel, the Netherlands.” A spokesperson for the company said “we are currently investigating how this has happened, so have made a voluntary recall as a precaution.” Products with a ‘best before’ date from 19th June 2016 to 8th January 2017 have been affected, with the plastic being found in a bar which was purchased by a German customer on 8th January. The Dutch Food Safety Authority said that the affected products are Mars, Snickers, Celebrations, Milky Way and Mini Mix. Music heard in Space by CAROLINE TYSZKA

AUDIO TAPES have been unearthed in which astronauts’ recorded strange sounds which they thought was music. In 1969, when the Apollo crew reached the other side of the moon, they heard eerie “music” which they recorded, but were told by ground crew it was more than likely radio interference. The recording, made by the three NASA astronauts, has been made public for the first time, with engineers unable to confirm exactly what the source of the peculiar whistling noises are. Thomas Stafford, John Young and Eugene Cernan were aboard Apollo 10 at the time, with one of them being heard to say on the recording that it was “outer-space-type music”. Reluctant to tell NASA headquarters what they had heard for fear of being blocked from future missions, the tapes were buried until a Discovery TV series unearthed the audio records. Michael Collins, who flew Apollo 11 solo around the far side of the Moon while fellow astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong became the first men to walk on the surface, said he too had heard an “eerie woo-woo sound”, but he had been told to expect it before his mission.

Mar Menor protest next Tuesday HUNDREDS OF Mar Menor residents are expected to turn out, next Tuesday, at 11am, in the Glorieta de España, in Murcia for a protest rally in front of the City Hall about the deplorable state of the beaches and waters of the Mar Menor in Punta Brava, Los Urrutias, Los Nietos and Mar de Cristal.

Cartagena’s mayor, José López, spoke this week at a press conference in which the Federation of Neighbourhood Associations announced the rally. López conﬁrmed that he will attend the demonstration calling for the regional authorities to “stop making excuses and get on with solving the problems of the Mar Menor”. The trigger for the protest rally is the blocking of the work which should have been carried out by the Coastal Authority to remove four dykes, currently contributing to the build-up of algae and sludge on the shoreline of the beaches of Los Urrutias. The Ministry of Finance has blocked the funds since the central government situation means only emergency works can be carried out. The residents fear that the blocking will be maintained during the month of March and the works cannot then be carried out until after the summer, since for biological reasons, relating to local ﬁsh and wildlife, the work has to be seasonal. “Meanwhile, the residents have to live with up to one metre of sludge that may even be dangerous for bathing,” said López. A free shuttle bus will visit the towns of the Mar Menor region, to pick up those wishing to travel. It will depart from Los Nietos at 9.15am and pass through the Estrella de Mar Urbanisation (9.20am), Los Urrutias (9.25am), Punta Brava (9.30am), El Carmolí (9.35) and El Algar (9.45am). Although the bus is free, residents will need to sign up in advance.

The donation is voluntary and entirely for the premature baby’s wellbeing. The breast milk is also free for the babies, and the process is overseen by neonatologists and pediatricians.

Rosell gets special diabetic care centre by CAROLINE TYSZKA

MURCIA HEALTH Authority is launching, in Cartagena’s University Hospital Santa María del Rosell, a special centre for diabetic management. The Diabetes Centre of Excellence for the region, at Rosell Hospital, will improve patient care for people with diabetes and will provide a centre for coordination among professionals attending the 21,113 diabetics within the municipality. The announcement was made on Tuesday, by the Area Health Authority Director, José Sedes, to the president and the director of Cartagena’s Diabetic Association (Sodicar), María Dolores García Ros and María José Martínez, at a meeting at Santa Lucía Hospital . According to a health authority source, the meeting was also to examine new avenues of collaboration that would beneﬁt patients with diabetes. Currently, there are ﬁve working groups, in which more than 30 professionals participate, which aim to improve coordination and the relationship between primary care and specialized care. Of the 21,113 patients within the health area, 11,327 are men, representing 53.65%, while the remaining 9,786 are women, 46.35%.

THE A&E DEPARTMENT, at Morales Meseguer Hospital, in the City of Murcia, is struggling to cope, as patient numbers increase by up to 10%, as a result of the current flu epidemic The department has been almost in a state of collapse since the beginning of the week, according to information gleaned from some of its staff. On Tuesday, 29 patients were queued there, awaiting transfer to a ward, and, by Wednesday, there were still 21 patients in that situation. The Murcian Health Service (SMS) has stated that both Morales Meseguer and other hospitals in the area have been under pressure, since the beginning of the flu epidemic. On Wednesday, in La Arrixaca Hospital, 37 patients were waiting for transfer to a ward, in an A&E department designed to accommodate a maximum of 40 patients. In the week of 8th to 14th February (the latest data available), the Health Authority recorded 573 cases of influenza throughout the region, 142 more than during the previous seven days. Since February 14th, the epidemic has continued to increase. The

Anti-noise patrols for fiestas by IAN ASKEW ON WEDNESDAY, the mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, and the regional government delegate, Antonio Sánchez-Solis, chaired a session of the Local Security Council, a meeting attended by over 30 representatives of various neighborhood groups, associations, businesses and labour organizations, institutions and other sectors of the social fabric of the city. Among the topics to be put on the table, the City Council reported on the special safety measures that will be put in place for the Spring Festival and Easter. The two busiest days will be the Burial of the Sardine and

the Bando de la Huerta, which are expected to involve 850,000 and 550,000 people, respectively. Murcia reduces its spending on purchases to 167€ per month by IAN ASKEW

A STUDY, by the Kelisto money saving website, reveals Murcia to be the fourth cheapest city in Spain to ﬁll the shopping trolley. Last year, the people of Murcia reduced their spending on shopping to 167€, 14.3% down from 2014, according to a study of mass distribution and consumption in 2015, which analyzes the activity of large areas of the retail sector in Spain over the past year, together with consumer habits. Moreover, residents of the capital last year spent an average of 195€ per month on purchases made in large supermarket chains and supermarkets, 1.3% less than the average for Spain, which stands at 197.6€. Kelisto conducted a study on the most expensive and cheapest regional capitals in the country’s 14 provinces, taking into consideration 5 categories of products and services. According to the survey results, Murcia is the fourth cheapest regional capital in Spain. However, the IBI, property tax, is the ﬁfth most expensive in the country, at 42.13% more than the average. With regard to private transport, Murcia is ranked in eighth place for taxi fares.

Aircrew Association says farewell THE AIRCREW Association Costa Blanca said farewell last Wednesday to their former president and chairman, Brian Weskett, and his wife, Anne, at a lunch held at the Costa Marco restaurant, Benimarco.

LAST WEDNESDAY, HELP Vega Baja opened the doors to its second Friendship Centre, at the Posh Club, La Marina. Following the 12 year success of the charity’s other Friendship Centre, at La Zenia, two of the La Marina volunteers suggested that a new Friendship Centre should be set up in the area, as there were so many people living alone on the La Marina urbanisation who

were in need of some company and friendship. The volunteers, Alan Burnside and Alan Phillips, visited the friendship centre at La Zenia and, after canvassing the views of residents in their own area, and organising a venue, volunteers and publicity, have now opened the La Marina Friendship Centre. Co-ordinator, Alan Burnside, said “We were absolutely delighted to see the number of people that attended

on the first day, and are confident that, as word gets around the area, even more will join in. Many guests said how wonderful it was to have somewhere to go to get together with others, which is exactly what we were aiming to achieve”. IT WAS a nice day for a mass white wedding in South Korea last weekend as 3,000 couples from 62 countries tied the knot in a ceremony conducted by the Unification Church.

Another 12,000 brides and grooms got to say ‘I do’ in the ceremony thanks to the power of the internet during the three hour ceremony in Gapyeong, 75km north east of the country’s capital Seoul. The controversial Unification Church was founded in 1954 by the late Reverend Sun Myung Moon – his followers are frequently referred to as ‘Moonies’ – who died in 2012 aged 92. He had presided over mass weddings since the sixties and his widow Hak Ja Han Moon officiated last Saturday when some 22,000 church followers and guests gathered at the Cheong Shim Peace World Centre, the church’s headquarters. The couples were identically dressed and included 1,000 marrying for the first time; together with 2,000 who were already hitched but seeking to re-dedicate their marriages and families to God as they had married before joining the church. Mrs Moon was said to have urged the Unification Church’s followers to complete its mission to “build heaven on earth” by 2020. However, despite the thousands taking part, earlier mass ceremonies have been simply gigantic in comparison. In 1997, 30,000 couples wed in Washington and two years later, 21,000 couples filled the Olympic Stadium in Seoul. Rev Moon has always been a controversial figure. He was once jailed in the United States for tax evasion and declared in 1992 that he and his wife were messiahs. And critics over the years have attacked his church; calling it a cult and accusing it of brainwashing its followers.

SHOPPERS IN a local Sainsbury’s stood aghast as a fight erupted over a £1 chicken pie. A mother received severe bruising to her arms and a split lip when she was attacked at her local Sainsbury’s store in Torquay Devon. Surprisingly, the fight was not over the last half price television, but a chicken and mushroom pie. Torquay police have begun an investigation following an

incident that took place at the town’s supermarket, where a woman was wrestled to the ground and had her hair pulled by the attackers, before other shoppers intervened. Polly-Victoria Turner, aged 21, said, “I thought I was going die. It took around six male shoppers to get the couple off me.” The couple, who pounced on Miss Turner, were shopping with their new-born baby, which they left unattended during and after the attack, before they returned to get their child. The argument started as Polly’s aunt reached for the reduced pie and the man told his partner to move out of the way. Polly said “my aunt stood back and told the couple it was fine, but they began verbally abusing her before turn-

ing on me.” Witnesses said that the scene was “exceptionally distressing” as other shoppers struggled to pull the woman off Polly. Miss Turner went on to say “as I was down on the ground I could hear the man shouting ‘have her babe’ and I could hear my daughter screaming.” The store confirmed that they were currently helping police with their enquiries following the attack, as police offices released a description of the couple. The woman was wearing wellington boots, a green coat, had long black hair and was pushing a pram. Her partner was wearing a farmer’s cap, jacket and jeans.

The roughest were in Woebegone Worthing. Names have been changed to protect the far from innocent,so let’s call them -The Norman Bates Primary, and Our Sacred Lady of Sociopaths C of E Secondary Modern (we had an in-house coroner). All I wanted was to be a cool hep cat at Santa Bellow High School. Where? It’s the setting for one of the worst, but most enjoyable films from the ‘50/60’s – High School Confidential. Where all the cool cats with flat top hair cuts, drive Chevy Belairs & make out with chicks that look like Sandra Dee. Me? I had a Raleigh bone shaker with, humiliatingly, a shopping basket on the front & no chickadee. They also had the mighty piano pumping Jerry Lee Lewis singing the title song live on campus on the back of a flatbed truck. All we got on speech day was Arthur Askey with a penny-whistle. For mere mortals, this guff about the Fast Fifties & Swinging Sixties was precisely that. Henry Kissinger was getting more amorous action (and even he got distracted carpet bombing Cambodia). The rest of us never got a scratch during the so called ‘sexual revolution’.For instance I was a virgin until 32 years of age – by choice - sadly, not mine. My only deep joy at school was football which I loved, but was useless. I could trap a ball further than most could kick one. However I always got selected, not due to being a leader of men, ‘twas because I caught sports master Mr Hornblower with student teacher Miss Golightly, how can I put this subtly? I can’t – BEHIND BIKESHEDS, WOO-HOO! Our most humiliating defeat was to St. Agnes High – they thrashed us 15-0 – in their street clothes. Hell’s Teeth! those girls were battle hardened. The most pointless lesson? Woodwork. We decimated an entire Equatorial rain forest to make an ink blotter or mug tree. Sting would not be best pleased. There was a picture of Señor Sumner in the National Geographic (a magazine I now view the same as Playboy – full of exotic places I’m never going to visit). Sting is pictured in an Amazonian jungle sporting a watch worth a Third World debt, while pontificating about the plight of the indigenous population & how it’s all our fault. Sting! Sell the watch, give them the money, the jobs a good ‘un, now please give it a rest – and you Bono.

Legally it is possible to claim against the bank, and request cancellation of the clauses relating to the linkage to foreign currency, since the bank did not inform consumers of the potential risks of these financial products. In addition, these loans are not referred to the normal interest, rather, like the Euribor which is the most common, instead they are normally referred to the Libor, which is an unusual and controversial interest rate. On many occasions not only are those affected paying higher than expected monthly repayments to the bank, but also, if the change of currency is unfavorable, often the consumer could owe now even more capital in Euros than that which was agreed at the beginning of the loan, despite having spent many years paying the mortgage. Many Spanish courts, including the Supreme Court in its judgment of June 2015, have pointed out that these types of loans are complex financial instruments, and therefore the bank is required to provide greater protection and information to non-expert consumers. Although these contracts are not in themselves illegal, the lack of sufficient and accurate information to consumers who contract them, outlining the potential

risks of the product, could mean that there is no real knowledge by consumers and therefore the consent given when signing is not valid, which could lead to a declaration of invalidity for lack of transparency. It is important that the affected are consumers, ie individuals or companies not acting in the exercise of their profession, trade or business. It is important to consider product knowledge, experience in similar investments, and training and qualifications of the affected.

And there are many judgments in favor of the consumers aﬀected by these types of multi-currency loans, including among others, the judgment of the Provincial Court of Palma de Mallorca, Judgment 122/2011 of 5 April 2011. It is estimated that there could be anywhere between 30,000 and 60,000 such aﬀected cases at this moment in Spain. The evolution of a waterless garden

THOSE WHO have read ‘Living Well from Our Garden Mediterranean Style’ will know that my garden in Spain developed through several phases over the past 28 years. INITIALLY THE intention was a garden only planted up with wild and naturalised plants which required little watering for it was a holiday home for six years and there were no local garden centres. The only source of purchased plants being the nursery run by the council of the local town who had a few spares to sell to the public if one had a Spanish contact. With rain from the eves of the house to water the only beds with subtropical plants and more rain than now before the coastline was concreted over I managed without an irrigation system. Then when I started to write weekly and monthly columns in 1998 and books from 2001 I needed to change our strategy in order to test out new plants and design ideas. In this period there was an amazing growth in the number of garden centres and the range of plants and chemical garden care products they had on sale but unfortunately in more and more of the plants on oﬀer were not native to Spain and came from the climatic conditions in sub-tropical countries or northern European hot houses. Naturally to include support and advice to expats and

Spaniards investing in these new imports in chapters in my books and in weekly and monthly columns we expanded our plantings and installed an irrigation system to enable me to take off for international walking holidays. I, like many, experimented with sub tropical flowering plants fruits and vegetables for interest, experience and something new to write about. Then the very heavy frosts of 2004 and 2005 and loss of many of the more delicate plants made me reverse my own investments and concentrate on preserving some of the original Spanish plants in my semi formal garden. The benefits being that I used less water, had less pest problems - not that I had many before, more plants could be propagated from seeds and cuttings, less young and mature plants were lost, the irrigation system could be done away with, and I spent less time maintaining the garden especially during recent years when the garden has had to survive long periods of drought. Fortunately the little rain that did fall was not immediately lost by evaporation. Rather the rainfall was usefully collected in rain butts from guttering, fell from the roof into subtropical planted south facing beds mulched with a deep layer of stone

chippings and sizeable rocks some 28 years ago, was absorbed by deeply improved and mulched soils including the TerraCottem gel wisely used at the bottom of planting holes, ran from desert areas of the garden to planted areas along carefully contoured paths, and was prevented from running out of the plot through gateways or over terrace walls by ensuring that the entire garden was surrounded by walls. With such precautions in place and the strategic choice and planting of plants that develop deep roots the garden has now survived many summer without a watering system and the practice of walking the garden every few days to watch out for plants showing signs of stress and then only giving water deeply not shallowly, when I thought that the plant had been persuaded to deepen the depth of its moisture and nutrient seeking roots. It was such practical experiments and experiences that led to the writing of the book ‘HOW TO USE LESS WATER IN YOUR GARDEN- A practical guide to waterwise Mediterranean stryle gardening worldwide’ which is conveniently available from The Book Depository, Amazon Books and other internet book shops.

Colin Reply: A bit of a tricky one when the keyboard will not function. The only way I can think of it to connect an external USB keyboard and see if that allows you to access the PC. It sounds like the drivers for the keyboard have not been installed or loaded up, which once you are in the system, you should be able to track down the correct drivers from the Acer website.

Worried about getting old I am 15, and I am afraid of getting old. Everyone says how pretty I am, and I have been told that I could be a model. However, there is only a short time that I can do this type of work before I am too old. I look at members of my family who are growing old and ageing. I don’t want that to happen to me. It’s all I can think about. I am afraid there is no alternative to growing older and ageing. We have to accept that this is what happens to us all. Keep in mind that a lot of unfortunate people die young, and don’t even get the chance to have an interesting life and grow old. You are lucky, you are young and healthy and have your whole life ahead of you, so make the most of it, and try and feel grateful. A career in modelling would be wonderful. AUTHOR BARBRA Dean’s book about the adventures of children wearing a magical multicoloured hat is now available in English and Spanish. by JACK TROUGHTON THE CHILDREN’S story ‘The Multicoloured Hat – El Sombrero Multicolor’ has one page in English and the facing page in Spanish; making a perfect story for youngsters and an invaluable learning tool for expats learning English. Barbra and husband Tony have lived in Spain for 10 years – and when going to Spanish lessons were advised to read children’s books in the language. “This proved to be very good, as the words are simplistic, but without English we had to use the dictionary a lot,” said Barbra. “This is what gave me the idea to publish the book in both languages. “It is perfect for adults learning Spanish, teachers do tell you to read children’s books and with the English on one page and Spanish on the facing page, it is easy to go backwards and forwards to help you understand the words.” Barbra, who lives with Tony in Quesdada, said at the back of the book there was colouring pages for youngsters – although grown-ups could sneak a bit of fun if they wanted to have a go. The translations into Spanish were done by Berlingua, a local school. Barbra, who is now writing her second book about the ongoing adventures of the hat, said the book had been available in English only for about a year from Amazon. “It is now available in both English and Spanish, through all Amazons worldwide.”

In the story, the multicoloured hat flies around in the wind and lands on children’s heads. When they wear it, the youngsters become more confident, overcome fears and have a feeling of well being. “There are different stories and a moral to each of the stories,” explained the writer, who based characters in the book on members of the family. Barbra herself has worn many hats in the UK. She was Assistant Fashion Editor for a popular magazine, a freelance journalist, worked in the world of PR and advertising writing copy, and was a film extra. Now retired, she was also a mature student and aged 55 got a BA honours degree at University.

write about my work in restoring the balance in the many haunted homes of the World.

It is work that I have always taken on as the challenge that it is, and it always presents me with both solving and resolving of the expulsion of entities; which I have to say are very much on the increase. I have written the great truth that the dead do not live well amongst us, the living; but just now and then it is my work to do something about the hangers on that greyly inhabit with no right to do so. Each entity has it’s own personality and, indeed, it’s own expertise for that matter. There are ghosts who have little or no instincts, and the undead who do not seem to know that they have died and that the next stage is to move on up. Ghouls and ghosties have lost their souls somewhat when they should be concerned with making a connection that would take them to the happy hunting ground of the lost souls in transit to the Spirit World. Slowly all the dead find their way onwards to a better place where they belong. The undead try to communicate with their surroundings, often the way that they did when they were fully alive. In so doing they bring about cold spots in our homes and send the odd shiver down our spines in this process. Cats will stare at them because the great majority of noble felines have second sight, and Dogs may bark at a wall because they feel someone is there, and they are the household protective force. If your animal is having to protect you then they are picking up on something that just should not be there, and it is high time to take control. Ghosts maybe no longer clank chains, but then anything is possible and all phenomena of any kind begs to be investigated fully. Poltergeists are to be found in homes where there are children living, especially if there are teenagers around. People say that the influence of the poltergeist is brought about by the disturbing balance of that transit experienced when boy is about to become a young man and girl becomes a woman. This transitory period is literally sheer bliss for the soulless poltergeist. The moody energy of teenagers is hypnotic to them and they then go on to commit acts that bring attention to the entire family, for one reason or another. Most poltergeists only move on when there is a better offer, and they are hard to dislodge. They like to break things and love to shatter light bulbs with a strange combination of both connective and destructive force that channels energy into minor but noticeable breakages. If you feel that you are not alone in your home and you need to remove any unwanted guests the very first stage is to go in with kindness and suggest that there is a better place for them. Remember that you, the resident in charge, are the best person to do this, and try to eliminate any fear. If entities pick up on such fear they can use it as fuel to dig themselves into the fabric of the home even more. Better for you to go in gently and be determined, changing to showing anger but again determination, if you really have to. The undead can scare but they do not harm usually. Your home will feel better without them undoubtedly, and a set of prescribed rules will banish them successfully. I do admit to carrying a small cross and some holy water in my work bag, just in case; and I am not afraid to tell those unwanted banshees that for them it is best that they go into the light on their own accord, for their own sake. Some will move on and some won’t; however, assistance is available, and force can and will be used as a last resort!

THE COSTA Blanca Branch of the Royal Society of St George staged its Annual General Meeting last Saturday marking 2016 as a special year. As the society marks its 25th anniversary this year, the meeting and lunch at the Cumbre del Sol Restaurant in Benitachell was exceptionally well attended with 45 members and guests gathering. Branch Chairman, Wing Commander Bob Hunt MBE welcomed everyone to the meeting and thanked committee members for their hard work over the last 12 months in helping to organise a number of successful social events. And he also asked members to remember

founder member Peggy Skipwith OBE, who passed away last year at the age of 100. Bob said functions included the St George’s Day Banquet at Restaurante Salones Carrasco in Javea, when the branch was honoured by the attendance of Joanna Cadman, the society’s Chairman. The business of the meeting saw accounts for 2015 being considered and approved, the committee re-elected for 2016 and the various reports accepted. Who wants to go to the World Premiere of The Cucaracha Club? Thanks to the support from the Mayor of Torrevieja and the Tourist Office, filming began on The Cucaracha Club in 2014, and now everyone involved is looking forward to the premiere on Thursday 10th March at Virgen del Carmen Theatre, and an 88 year old lady from South Wales who gave financial support to help complete the project will be a special guest on the night. ELENA IS a medium sized, light tan, Podenco Labrador cross. She was spooked by the postman on Monday 8th February, managing to get through the gate and escape from her new home in Quesada. The ﬁrst sighting was in Montebella, near the cement works. Since then, she has travelled as far as San Miguel de Salinas, and was seen, on Monday 15th February, in the orange groves near the cemetery. Little Pod Association are desperately trying to ﬁnd this 4 year old girl. If you see her please do not approach, as she will not accept food or treats from anyone, and will not go to strangers. She is a very nervous and timid dog. She is microchipped and was wearing a black collar. Please call 660 83 23 60 if you see her.

 VANESSA HUDGENS played Gabriella Montezher in High School Musical, but now concentrates mostly on acting. Vanessa and her new boyfriend Austin Butler went to Arizona Park last week and decided to etch their names into a rock formation in the picturesque Sedona area. Vanessa shared with her 15.7 million Instagram followers “Austin + Vanessa” captioned “Happy Valentine’s Day boo boo bears,” so sweeeet! What’s not so sweet is that they had their collar felt for “damaging natural surfaces or property of the United States,” and could get a $5,000 ﬁne and/or 6 months in jail. Idiots!

ITS ELECTION year in America and come November we´ll know who´s the new president. I have to confess to being extremely concerned that Donald Trump might get the job, and I fancy Barack Obama might well be thinking similarly. The polls have got bad haircut man well in front but Barack garnered a great deal of attention when he said “life in the White House is not ´a reality show´ and I continue to believe that Mr. Trump will not be president, and the reason is because I have a lot of faith in the American people!” Good ﬁnish B O!

IT SEEMED like the whole world came out in praise of Lady Ga Ga´s Bowie tribute at the Grammy´s, but there was one notable exception. Duncan Jones, son of David, watched her performance then shared with his 277,000 followers the dictionary definition of the word ‘gaga. “Overexcited or irrational, typically as a result of infatuation or excessive enthusiasm mentally confused … damn it! what IS that word!” which all adds up to Duncan not liking what he saw and heard. It’s certainly a fully loaded criticism, but being the son gives him the right.

It’s ‘12 Years a Whoopi’ at ABC,” a reference of course to the film “12 Years a Slave,” and the magazine saw this as ´goading´ behaviour ... yes it is, but funny too! However, there´s one more twist in the tale. Whoopi is in the final year of her contract and according to an insider if she wants to renew at the end of the season, “it would be for significantly less money!” So my good people … it’s your call. Is she about to fall, or is she about to be pushed?

MADONNA TRIPPED up at last year’s Brits and Leonardo got a dirty look from Lady Ga Ga at last month’s Saga Awards, and here´s a couple of oddities from the BAFTA´s. Stephen Fry calling costume designer Jenny Beavan a ´bag lady´ went viral after which he cancelled his Twitter account saying “Will all you sanctimonious f*ckers f*ck the f*ck off, Jenny Beavan is a friend, joshing is legitimate. Christ I want to leave the planet.” Ahem. The other odd tale was Julie Walters losing a diamond earring and saying “it was probably worth more than my home.” Aahh Blesss.

It’s never too late to learn

“Nunca es tarde para aprender”. It’s never too late to learn. This is something I find myself saying to people in one way or another almost every day. On a similar subject I was reading in a Spanish magazine the other day about women over fifty who had turned their lives around. The stories were quite inspiring. Luckily for me, and this article, they were also full of past tenses. Here are a few quotes from one lady called Menchu: “Me casé a los 22 años y dejé de trabajar”. (I got married at 22 and stopped working). “Estaba contenta dedicándome a mi familia” (I was happy dedicating myself to my family). “Cuando mis hijos crecieron, una amiga me propuso trabajar con ella. El cambio me gustó y me puse a hacer cursos como una loca”. (When my children grew up a friend suggested that I worked with her. I liked the change and I started doing courses like crazy). “Nunca pensé que era mayor para buscar empleo” (I never thought I was (too) old to look for work) “Una de las cosas que me aporta el trabajo es que rejuvenece” (one of the things that work does is rejuvenate) Here are the words of another lady, Maite, who started studying at 59: “Me enteré hace siete años de que existía la Universidad de

Mayores y me picó la curiosidad. No dije nada a mi marido ni a mis tres hijos y me presenté a la prueba de selección. Levaba 40 años sin hacer un examen. Estaba como un flan, pero cuando me aceptaron sentí una gran satisfacción”. I’ve decided to let you translate this one, but here’s some help. “Enterarse” means “to find out”. Another expression I rather like is “estar como un flan” (to be like a flan). This doesn’t mean those round sponge things we eat, but a Spanish flan which wobbles about. Now you’re imagining a lady with lots of wobbly bits, but it actually means “shaking like a jelly”. Let’s get back to the point. This short extract illustrates the Spanish past tenses wonderfully, as it contains a sequence of events (she found out, she was curious, she

said nothing, she sat an exam, she was accepted, she felt satisfied). Contrasted with these are two descriptions using the past continuous tense – she was (had been) 40 years without taking an exam, and she was shaking like a jelly. New builds and renewable energy (Part 2)

Last week we were looking at the limitations imposed by the new regulation coming into force from the 13th of March of this year. This regulation imposed a limit on the energy that homes must use, (for example on the East Coast of Spain Alicante Murcia, Almeria etc) and a limit has been established in 40Kwh/m2 per year. I have mentioned the Coast because the percentage of energy allowed for each household will depend on its locality, obviously, a home on the high mountains of Burgos with temperatures in winter that may fall to -10Cº will require more energy than a home in Torrevieja. The colder the zone the more energy you are allowed to consume. Spain has been divided into different climatic zones and a limited number of Kwh/m2 is provided to each home, values that range from the 40Kwh/m2 per year for “α” (More climatically benign zone such as Canary Islands and Cadiz) zones, to 70Kwh/m2 per year for the climatic zone “E” situated in north Spain. In its application to buildings of new construction the new HE 2013 regulation establishes for the first time a limitation of energy consumption for buildings of new construction and for any home extension of existing buildings, and for that uses this non-renewable primary energy consumption indicator. The limitation to the energy consumption of the building includes the consumption of non-renewable primary energy necessary to satisfy the energy demands of heating and cool-

ing, hot water, ventilation and, in the case of non-residential buildings mechanical equipment, to also include lighting. How will we architects make this regulation work? To be able to comply with the requirement of consumption we may use a variety of technical systems and renewable energy sources, which no doubt will provide us a great flexibility. This flexibility must be compatible, however, with the fact that our building is, first of all, energy efficient. It is for this reason that the HE 2013 regulation maintains the global indicator of energy demand of the building, which is representative of its energy needs and the thermal comfort that the building is able to provide to its users. The new regulation HE 2013 advances in this regard with greater emphasis on limiting the energy demand, making more explicit the requirement and setting more stringent limit values. In residential new construction private buildings or extensions of existing buildings limitations are established both for the energy demand for cooling and heating. The demand for heating is limited depending on the climatic zone of winter to a value that ranges from the 15 Kwh/m2 per year for α climate zones, A and B to the 40 Kwh/m2 per year of the climatic zone E, to which a corrective factor is applied that takes into account the area of the building. The limit of the cooling demand is fixed depending on the climatic summer zone to a 15 Kwhm2 per year for zones 1, 2 and 3 and 20 Kwhm2 per year for zone 4.

Interventions in existing buildings The policy of energy efficiency of buildings, of which the technical building code is a fundamental instrument for its implementation, says that the minimum energy efficiency requirements determined for buildings and their elements must be established in order to achieve “optimal levels of profitability for the user”. The conditions of interventions in existing buildings (type of construction, orientation, etc.) are much more limiting than in new buildings (or obviously in their extensions) and, as a result, optimal profitability levels differ considerably between both cases. Therefore, the update regulations have established regulatory requirements for interventions in existing buildings with respect to those established for new buildings. Given its great social importance of rehabilitation of existing buildings, the updated CTE takes into account the rehabilitation of exiting built homes to demand that this be carried out in a manner consistent with the existing technical possibilities and social needs. The general criteria set out in the CTE joined the energy efficiency criteria for intervention in existing buildings established in the new regulation applicable to interventions in existing buildings depend on the extent of the intervention, so the new regulation will need to applied to existing buildings if works affect more than 25% of the shell of the building or those in which the main use of the building is modified.

Bacon and Egg Salad with Oil and Balsamic Dressing For years I turned my nose up at the thought of warm salads, and then I went to France. The French are so creative when combining warm meat and fish in salads and I was soon converted. Ideally you need thick cuts of bacon (I used cured pork loin in this version) but ordinary sliced bacon would do just as well. You could try adding a few bits of spicy sausage such as Chorizo or even pieces of black pudding such as Spanish Morcilla if you like that kind of thing. 400g thick cut bacon, sliced into strips. 4 fresh eggs. Mixed salad leaves. Salt and freshly ground black pepper. For the dressing 4-5 tbls extra virgin olive oil. 2 tbls balsamic vinegar.

1. Fry the sliced bacon over moderate heat until well browned. 2. Meanwhile bring a large pan of water to the boil and drop in the eggs to poach them for 2-3 minutes. 3. Place a handful of salad leaves in the centre of four large serving plates and, when the bacon and eggs are ready, throw the bacon over the salad. 4. Quickly return the frying pan to the heat and add the olive oil and balsamic vinegar, leaving them to warm through while you place a poached egg on top of each salad. 5. Stir the dressing, scraping up any bits from the bottom of the pan and drizzle this over the salads. Season the eggs with a little salt and pepper and serve immediately. Serves 4 Preparation time: 10 minutes. Cooking time: 10-15 minutes.

Successful breastfeeding As a both a midwife and a mother who has successfully breastfed, I am forever promoting breastfeeding. In this article, instead of me ‘waving the flag’ I am passing on the task to one of my patients who one year on is still enjoying successful breastfeeding!......... I had so many questions and doubts about breastfeeding. I was confused with all the literature for and against breastfeeding. Questions like “how would I know if is she was getting enough or too much milk, would my milk be rich enough,would it hurt,would she latch on ok, would I be embarrassed to feed her in public etc”? I really wanted to try and breastfeed her, to try and give her the best start in life I could. I think the key to success in my case was being prepared and been given all the information and help I needed. I found that help in a wonderful lady who was my midwife at the time (Dawn). She answered ALL my questions and gave me more information that I didn’t even know about, most of all she was there anytime I needed help or advice before and after the birth. Too many women, I feel, may have given up because of poor or wrong advice. My mum gave me good basic advice but she was mindful of the up to date advice from Dawn. When my daughter was born I felt so relaxed about breastfeeding and I knew what to do and what to expect. It just felt so natural. Even after she was born Dawn still helped me when I needed help or advice and we worked out how to change and adapt things so it was better for me and my daughter, as in working out different positions which definitely made it easier and more enjoyable to fed her. I love breastfeeding. It’s our special time together and we have a great bond through breastfeeding and I’m so happy that I know I’m giving her the best nutrition and diet she could ever have. We travel a lot, it is SO convenient! It also doesn’t cost anything to breastfeed and its ready in an instant. (no getting up at 3am to make up bottles!) Throughout her paediatric checks she has shown to be well above the average score, and I do believe that my milk has helped in that. My daughter is just over a year now and I still breastfeed, she loves her milk and breastfeeding. For successful breastfeeding you must get as much information and help as possible and relax and enjoy it. Its a wonderful experience. Carol. Urban crossover THAT’S WHAT Peugeot calls its 2008; a five-door estate that sits high off the road like a 4x4 but without the uneconomical, permanent all-wheel drive. However, it’s fitted with a grip control that features modes for mud, sand, snow and normal everyday driving, making it more agile than a standard car (watch the video at testdrives.biz).

This function provides much needed traction to the front wheels when required. It can also be cancelled at speeds of up to 30mph, giving the driver ultimate control. I’m testing a 1.6 e-HDi Allure model, which is basically the mid-range offering. Standard features include 16” alloy wheels; power folding chrome door mirrors; rear parking aid; dark-tinted rear windows; stainless steel front and rear scuff plates; cruise control; speed limiter; all round electric windows and air conditioning. Parkers, the used car experts says: “Skid plates front and rear supplement more aggressively-styled alloy wheels, either in 16 or 17-inch sizes, sitting beneath squared-off wheel arches. A kink in the roof above the rear door evokes memories of an early Land Rover Discovery, though it embellishes the space with chrome rather than glass. It’s a material used throughout the car’s exterior. That familiar, and slightly fussy, Peugeot family face is adorned with a bold grille outlined in the shiny metal, as are the roof rails, door bottoms and wing mirrors. It makes for a rather glitzy ambience to what could otherwise

be considered a slightly derivative design statement.” Over the course of our time together we head into the New Forest, Hampshire and on into Dorset and Wiltshire, which provides ideal terrain for testing its abilities. The concept is simple: Peugeot has created a more robust estate car that embraces the challenges that the modern family will throw at it - a family like the Saunders clan, which decides to take a few days out and have a well-earned rest at Sandy Balls, the self-catering holiday park in the New Forest. That means loading everything into the car but the kitchen sink. And although the boot is not large enough to accommodate our tandem pram, it does tackle the smaller single pushchair; a reasonably-sized suitcase and of course eldest daughter Harriett’s Trunki. LAST WEEKEND saw the under 18’s travel to Torrevieja in search of revenge, following a 40 to 5 defeat last time they met by PATRICIA THOMPSON CARTAGENA, HAVING trained hard, sported their biggest and strongest players to try to stem the flow of tries from this notoriously physically strong team. Cartagena was a totally different team. Totally outclassed in all areas, Torrevieja did not know what had hit them, as a torrent of 5, perfectly converted, tries rained down on them. Cartagena led from start to finish, ending the game with a final score of 17-35. Cartagena now sit third in the Murcia league, whilst Torrevieja are second, and Lorca head the table. All the clubs in the Murcia league, including Murcia itself, welcome English players. Cartagena now have a few weeks’ break so the next report will be in early April. Las Salinas winter petanca league THE LAS Salinas winter petanca league is now in week 12, with only 2 matches to go. At least there was no rain last week, although Fridays, in particular, it seems, are still cold and windy. In division 1, the ﬁrst 3 all had good wins, with Amigos Belgas 1 beating Lakeside Lakers 7-1, Los Bandidos beating Buccaneers 6-2, and Rocajuna beating Dominos Dragons 7-1. In their ﬁght for survival, Lakeside Hellcats had an important victory over Dominos Red 5-3. In division 2, Blagul 1 stay top, with a 6-2 victory over El Mirador Eagles. Amgos Belgas 2 move into 2nd place after beating Lakeside Mosquitos 5-3. El Mirador Hawks had a good away win at XPS 5-3, and Corsairs move up the table with a good 7-1 victory over Danish Dynamite. In division 3, league leaders, Pumas, had a good home win over Peacocks Red 6-2. Second

place El Mirador Kestrels also had a good home win against El Presidente 1 7-1, as did 3rd place Amigos Belgas 3 against Torre Bears 1 6-2. In the other league match, Danish friends beat Buddies Bar 5-3. In division 4, league leaders, Dominos McCoys, had a solid home win over San Miguel Tigers 6-2, while second place Guardamar had a good away win at Hideaway 7-1, and Torre Bears 2 had a good away win at Peacocks Blue 6-2. The other match in this league finished with 4-4 draw between El Raso Bandits and Florentilles. In division 5 Rocajuna Lions stay top, with a 6-2 victory at Daya Vieja Rednecks. Blagul 2 stay second although they could only draw 4-4 at Freebooters. Falcons stay 3rd, with a good away win at Dominos Diamonds 5-3. In division 6, league leaders, Dominos Phoenix, drew 4-4 at Laguna Rosa. The semi-finals for the cup and plate were held this week, and, the cup final will be Amigos Belgas 1 v Buccaneers, and the final for the plate will be Dominos Red v Lakeside Mosquitos. LAST SATURDAY the first team travelled to Barcelona to play against Hospitalet, and won. 45-7. Tries were from Nacho Muller, Ivan Agudo, Juan Ignacio Pérez, Bruno Villalba, Luciano Martínez and Lucas Poggi. La Vila stay at the top of the table, and the play offs are fast approaching. The second team had another convincing home win against Alicante University first team. 41-10. They also stay top of the table, in the Regional 2 League. Next season, they are hoping to play at Regional 1 level. Next Saturday 27th February, there will be a friendly sevens home game at 4.30pm against the Kazakhstan men’s Olympic team, and, at 5.30 pm, they will be showing, on TV, the VI Nations England Ireland game. The next first team home game will be on Sunday 6th March at 12.30pm, against Les Abelles Valencia, the only team to have beaten

them this year. Tickets will be 5€ for adults and free for under12s. Tickets are now available at www.instanticket.es at the same price. As usual, the Argentinian barbecue will be available; a large hot roll for 4€. If you want to join in the after-match meal with the players, paella and a drink for 5€, book your ticket at the bar. The shop will be open on Sunday, selling the new Rugby La Vila hoodie for 25€. On 2nd March The Russian women’s national team will return to the club for their second leg training camp, until 26th March. They have been playing in Sao Paulo Brazil, in the World Sevens Series, where they ﬁnished 9th. After Villajoyosa, they wil travel to Langford, Canada and the USA to take part in the next Wolrd Sevens Series. Meanwhile. the Kazakhstan, men’s and women’s sevens teams will be at Villajoyosa, preparing for the Olympic Qualiﬁers. The Ka-

zajistan women’s team still has the option to qualify, as they were only beaten by Japan’s women’s team. The 30th International Benidorm Sevens competition will be held on 28th and 29th May when top teams will be preparing for the next Olympic Sevens Qualifiers. La Vila Rugby Club is situated at Carretera El Pantano, Villajoyosa. Just take the motorway AP-7 exit 66 (Villajoyosa). At the first roundabout head for the mountain. It is about 1 km from the Motorway exit 66. Alternatively, take the Villajoyosa by-pass, and take the middle exit, at the first roundabout bear right towards the motorway entrance and at the second roundabout bear left towards the mountain. The day was cold and blustery and the winds created putting problems for most players, with low scores recorded. Buggies automatically stop at least 50 metres from the greens and walking up and down steep slopes to get back to the buggies seemed to hinder the pace of play. However, most players enjoyed the course and hope for better weather on their next visit. The winners were, Div 1, Roger Major, 37pts, Div 2, Wayne Harris, 32pts and Div 3, Ian D White (on c/back), 30pts. 5 NTP’s went to hole 5, Malcolm Smith, hole 7, George Rowe, hole 10, Dave Hurst, hole 14, Phil Robinson and hole 17, Jim Hayes.
