The country´s court system does struggle and at times looks in danger of being overwhelmed but the group and its lawyers plugged away and are now enjoying the sweet taste of justice and a job well done. Finance and a fallout from a failed bank because of a crooked equity release scheme makes up the basis of the Landsbanki Luxembourg saga. It has been rumbling on for years and worried pensioners are quickly discovering they are embroiled in a dirty war. On the Costas homes are at stake as victims who signed up for a ´no risk´ peace of mind deal are being pursued to repay Landsbanki loans, even though the majority of their cash was invested by the bank and should have settled the bill…money squandered in the corridors of power. The scandal is Europe wide and a criminal court case is on the horizon in Paris. The Landsbanki Victims Action Group, which is waiting for its own case to be heard, will hope for victory and a domino effect. The equity release offered by the Luxembourg bank was of a type outlawed in the UK years ago. Enough said?

The 38 year old Dominican Republic national has been sentenced to seven years in prison, ironically seven years after the crime he committed at the Central Rock nightclub in Almoradi. In the early hours of a Sunday morning in June 2009, the accused, then aged 31, was refused entry to the nightclub, and began to punch the doorman in the face. The man left the scene, only to return a few minutes later with a gun, which he shot in the air and then at the retreating doorman in the local car park. Shooting the nightclub employee in the leg,

the accused continued to fire the gun as terrified onlookers ran for shelter and another person was hit by one of the bullets. The injured doorman managed to hide in the nightclub as the man continued to threaten the general public with his weapon. Hours later, the accused was arrested by the Guardia Civil, and has now been sentenced to three years for each offence which caused injury from the use of the weapon, which amounted to 6 years, with a further sentence of a year and three months for the illegal possession of weapons. He was also ordered to pay each gunshot victim 12,000€ plus 300€ and 500€ respectively to two car owners whose vehicles were damaged in the incident.

Mining victims remembered RESIDENTS OF Mazarrón, a former mining town, have paid tribute to victims of mining accidents. During the 19th century, the town of Mazarrón became an important centre of metal mining, in particular, for alum, silver and lead, although the mineral resources were exhausted in the early 20th century. The mayor of Mazarrón, Alicia Jiménez, opened the event with which the town paid tribute last Sunday to the victims of mining accidents. The municipal corporation, and residents of Mazarrón, attended the event, during which a laurel wreath was placed at the fountain, which contains a statue of a miner, on the roundabout which gives access to the Avenida de las Moreras.

Calais “Jungle” evictions

by caroline tyszka HEAVY MACHINERY moved into the migrant camp in Calais this week as thousands of refugees were evicted. The illegal camp of migrants in Calais, known as the “Jungle,” is home to approximately 5,000 men women and children, all hoping to make it across the Channel to the UK for a better life. An estimated 1,000 will have been displaced, as French courts approved the clearing of the southern part of the camp in February. Local officials said public areas, such as places of worship, or schools, would not be cleared, and said it would be a “humanitarian operation”, with the court stating that force could not be used, and that the camp residents should be persuaded to move. The squalid conditions at the camp have long been an issue, with many high profile figures recently visiting the “Jungle” to plead for better living conditions and ask France and the UK to house the migrants properly. Reacting to the French authorities’ action, Belgium placed temporary controls on its border with France, fearing that they may suffer an influx of the displaced migrants. The refugees had been given three options. They could move into heated container accommodation at the camp, have similar accommodation elsewhere in France, or

claim asylum in France. Tensions were very high, as the clearance operation took hold, with more than a dozen humanitarian organisations, on Tuesday, accusing the authorities of brutally evicting migrants from their makeshift dwellings. The organisations said that the authorities had failed to respect their promise of a humane and progressive operation, based on persuading migrants to vacate their tents and tarp-covered homes. Organisations, such as Auberge des Migrants (Migrants’ Shelter), GISTI and Secours Catholique, were among the 14 who signed a list of charges against the authorities. In a statement, they said: “Refugees, under threats and disinformation, were given one hour 10 minutes to leave their homes. Police pulled out some who refused, making arrests in certain cases, while others were not allowed to gather their belongings or identity papers.” As migrants and activists protested, they climbed onto the rooftops of some of the makeshift houses, and set fires, making it difficult for officers to remove them. The French Interior Minister, Bernard Cazeneuve, said, in a statement on Tuesday, that “the operation would continue throughout the week, calmly and methodically, providing a place for everyone, as the government has committed.”

Executives charged over Fukushima disaster THREE FORMER executives from the Fukushima power plant have been charged with negligence. The Tokyo courts have formally charged the Tepco (Tokyo Electric Power Company) Chairman, and two of his executives, who were in control at the time, with professional negligence, following a citizens’ group pushing for prosecutors to pursue the case. The Fukushima Daiichi plant suffered a series of meltdowns following a massive earthquake and tsunami in 2011. The national broadcaster in Japan, NHK, said that all three planned to plead not guilty, as they could not have anticipated the size of the tsunami that killed almost 16,000 people with over 2,500 still listed as missing. Whilst none of the deaths have been linked to the nuclear disaster itself, many died in the subsequent evacuation.

European Arrest Warrant success NATIONAL POLICE have successfully arrested two people who were wanted by the Dutch and Belgian authorities.

A man and a woman have been arrested in Benidorm and Altea by officers complying with European arrest warrants from their respective countries. The woman, who is Dutch and aged 49, is wanted in the Netherlands for belonging to a criminal organisation and money launder-

ing between 2004 and 2009. The charges also related to international drug trafficking including the United States and the UK. The second person arrested was also 49 years old and a Belgian national. Police in Belgium issued the European arrest warrant based on several counts of fraud and VAT forgery. Both detainees were seen at the High Court where they were officially processed under the European Arrest Warrants.

Basque separatist leader freed from prison ARNALDO OTEGI, the Basque separatist leader, was released from prison, earlier in the week, to an awaiting crowd of supporters. The former member of Batasuna, part of the armed separatist group ETA, Arnaldo Otegi, was released from prison in Logroño, Northern Spain, just before 9am on 1st March 2016, having served six years and four months for supporting the rebuilding of the political arm of ETA. Otegi was greeted by a crowd of over 200 supporters, as well as his wife and children ,along with members of the separatist group, and leaders of the coalition parties. As he left the compound, clearly delighted to be free, the 57 year old said it was “right to recognise that we need more independence, but need to be peaceful and democratic.” Later in the day a reception event was held at his hometown of Elgoibar to honour the nationalist leader, and celebrate his newly found freedom. This was the sixth time that Otegi had been imprisoned, although this was the longest term served behind bars, with him being voted the renamed Sortu party’s secretary general in 2013, whilst still serving his sentence. The release has made it a difficult time for the relatives of ETA victims, who have had to endure the man they despise being hailed a hero by some. The Batasuna organisation, which was the political wing of ETA and banned in 2003, is now known as the legal pro-independence party Sortu. However, many still associate the links between the party and ETA, whose campaign of bombing and shooting is blamed for killing over 820 people. Arnaldo Otegi has been referred to as Spain’s Nelson Mandela, and also a Basque Gerry Adams, with his supporters and opponents feeling that he will play an important role in regional elections, although he personally is not eligible to run for office until 2022.

COSTA BLANCA couple Tony and Barbra Dean have been compensated after mistakenly installing natural gas when promised it would cut bills.

IN A week of drug bust announcements across the region, Guardia Civil officers have arrested six people for drug trafficking in Murcia and Alicante.

Energy giant Gas Natural Fenosa was sent last month’s RTN article headlined ‘Tempers Flare Over Gas’ as the Quesada couple angrily complained bills soared despite promises they would be slashed. The company forwarded the story to the installers who immediately visited to explain charges and agreed to rectify the situation. “So everyone is now happy,” said Tony. “The installers, Alberto Sola, are going to give me a new gas boiler, which is a result – it will replace two electric boilers and my electric bill should be reduced as well. “At least they have dealt with the situation in an honourable way – just goes to can take on the big boys and win.” The problem was the Deans only use gas for cooking and should have been informed it would not be cost effective as a replacement for bottled gas – but told of cheaper fuel, they paid 350€ to install the service.

Two kilos of marijuana and 700 buds were seized, when police officers were alerted to a drug trafficking organisation headed by a Dutch citizen living in the town of Orihuela Costa. To cultivate cannabis, the accused had hired two units at an industrial estate in Balsicas-Torre Pacheco, Murcia where over 500 square metres were dedicated to the growing of approximately 5,000 plants. The growing area used sophisticated lighting, heating, ventilation and irrigation to provide the growers with several harvests a year for distribution within Spain and the Netherlands. The detainees, three Dutch, two Spaniards and a Belgian, aged between 19 and 55 years, living in Murcia and Alicante, were charged, and remanded in custody. The Orihuela Costa resident’s home was searched, and officers seized a gun, along with various drug-related items. The drugs team also searched a property in the town of Los Montesinos, Alicante, where they arrested a man who was charged with distributing marijuana for the organisation, as well as having more than half a kilo of buds in his possession.

SHOCK However, the Deans were shocked by the size of the bills and warned others to take care. Reaching an amicable solution, tony said the cost soared because the bills included a 182€ charge – to be paid interest free monthly over two years – for the cost of laying pipes. “I was not informed of this extra charge.” And in addition the high cost of consumption was because the bills were estimated over the first three months. Tony added: As we were only going to be using the gas for cooking, I have been subsequently told that we should have been advised not

to have it installed.” He said he had been credited for the overcharge and compensated for the other problems. Tony added one disappointment was negative comments on social media after he went public by people who did not understand the problem and indicated he should have anticipated a problem. “When one is categorically told what the cost is and there is nothing more to pay, you do not expect to be billed for it.”

Illegal tobacco seized GUARDIA CIVIL officers have seized around 50,000 packets of illegal tobacco and made several arrest in Cataluña. Police officers discovered 49,038 packets of various brands of tobacco, hidden in a motorhome in l’Alt Urgell, Lleida, Cataluña. Operation SANGLA, established to catch criminal tobacco smugglers, swooped on a motorhome, following a surveillance mission, and arrested five Spanish nationals who were resident in the provinces of Lleida and Tarragona. The driver of the motorhome, realising the police presence, accelerated and ignored many attempts by the officers to be captured, putting the safety of other drivers at risk, before the chase came to an abrupt end. A warrant was issued for the search of the motorhome, where nearly 50,000 packets of tobacco were found in hollow areas between the cupboards and the shell of the vehicle. Following this, search officers moved to properties, which included a house and a farm located in l’Alt Urgell, where they found 520 grams of marijuana, 21.75 grams of cocaine, and 6,820€ in cash. They also discovered two weapons on false hunting licences, and five vehicles, which were used to transport the goods. The five were charged with smuggling, offenses against public health, membership of a criminal group, disobedience, reckless driving and false licence plates. Operation SANGLA continues, with further arrests not ruled out.

Zika virus continues to cause alarm SCIENTISTS HAVE confirmed that they have discovered a link between the Zika virus and a disorder that causes nerve damage and paralysis. The Zika virus, which is spread by mosquitos, has directly been connected to patients suffering with Guillain-Barré, the rare condition which is calculated to affect 24 in every 100,000 infected patients. Scientists are now warning that these finding suggest hundreds of people in Central and South America are likely to suffer from paralysis as the pandemic continues. In 2030% of patients the breathing muscles stop working and 5% die, despite intensive care. Dr Amdres Zea, a neurologist at one of the hospitals treating several patients, said “it is terrible. One mosquito bite and then, in 15-20 days, you are in intensive care.”

SHAMED CAM Bank failed in its legal duty to protect people’s cash as they invested in a luxury off-plan development, a judge has ruled in the second case brought by victims. The victory for the Finca Parcs Action Group at the First instance Court in Hellin has again given the bank a bloody nose and upheld the rights of people investing in property in Spain. The Caja de Ahorros del Mediterraneos (CAM) – now Sabadell CAM bank – was responsible for the deposits under Spanish law LEY 57/1968, known as a bank guarantee. The project, Las Higuericas Finca Parcs, close to the village of Agramon in Albacete, was abandoned in 2009 when the bank withdrew funding and the developers ran out of cash. Just 10% of the 617 detached villas were completed – and even these were never issued with first occupation licences by the local town hall. However, instead of releasing money to fund the building of homes in the sun, it was alleged cash was used to fund a lavish lifestyle

enjoyed by developers. Bank and developer were first found guilty in 2012 following a landmark trial and ordered to repay the deposits totalling 1.5 million Euros together with interest and legal costs – the bank lost its appeal in April 2013. And the first trial judge ruled CAM failed to control the use of off-plan deposits paid in advance; showing an “absolute disregard” for its legal obligations. “This behaviour can only be described as malpractice”. Following the second trial, again contested by the bank, 13 Finca Parcs victims will be repaid almost 500,000€ together with interest and legal costs. It is not known whether the bank will again appeal. The deposits were paid between 2005 and 2008 and the Finca Parcs Action Group launched its legal battle, the first lawsuit against bank and developer lodged with the court in 2011. In the second trial CAM again claimed it had no relationship with the buyers of the properties. The judge ruled: “Recent doctrine of the

supreme court not only states that the bank has to require the opening of a ‘Special Account’ but should also be responsible to the buyers if the corresponding guarantees are not issued. “So in this case Banco CAM, by not issuing or verifying the existence if the individual guarantees, has incurred responsibility towards the buyers who paid off-plan deposits to the developer’s accounts opened at its branches. “The bank manager, when questioned as a witness at the trial, admitted that there were irregularities in the fate of the money deposited by buyers.” Cam was once described as “the worst of the worst” by the Governor of the Bank of Spain had failed “in its legal obligation”. Keith Rule, founder of the action group, said the first victory in 2012 had been “hugely significant”, and became even more so when the appeal court upheld verdict and sentence. “Now we have another victory in Lawsuit 2.” He said when he formed the group he was convinced the developer’s banks had liabilities

and obligations regarding off-plan funds. Keith added: “One of my biggest hurdles back then was to find a lawyer who also shared my view. “Fortunately, I found Costaluz Lawyers, who since winning the first Finca Parcs case, has now won similar cases against developer’s banks for many other clients on failed off-plan property projects all over Spain”. And he said the law was strengthened by the Spanish Supreme Court confirming many important aspects regarding bank liabilities under Ley 57/1968. Director of the legal group Maria de Castro commented: “These victories against banks in favour of consumers are good for a balanced economy and for rebuilding trust in the Spanish legal and judicial system.” Jaime de Castro, who represented the action group in court, said: “Spain is unique among European countries in having an effective law to safeguard buyer’s off-plan deposits. “The Spanish courts have been applying this law strictly and categorically and I am confident this will continue.”

Expats flock to vote by jack troughton BRITISH PEOPLE living and working abroad are flocking to have their say in June’s historic referendum over the UK’s membership of the European Union. Since the 23rd June date of the ballot was fixed there has been a massive spike in the numbers of expats registering online for a voice in the ‘Brexit’ decision. The latest figure reveal the average daily rate of registrations has quadrupled from an average of 600 a day to more than 2,600. An estimated five million British people live outside the UK – around two million in Europe. Those who were last registered to vote in Britain under 15 years ago – the controversial 15-year rule – are still eligible to have a voice. And the Electoral Commission has launched a global campaign to encourage Britons living overseas to check their eligibility to vote ahead of the referendum on EU membership. The Foreign Office is supporting this campaign overseas, including in Spain. The British Ambassador Simon Manley, said: “Whether you think the UK should remain in or leave the EU, the 23rd of June will be your chance to have your say. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for the British people to decide. “You might be asking yourself, why bother to vote? Although you may now live in Spain, most expats still have strong ties with the UK – financial, family, friends. “You may also decide to return one day. So you very probably do have a stake in the outcome and how it may affect your life. I strongly encourage you to register to vote – just go online and follow the simple process.” People registered on the UK electoral roll within the last 15 years are eligible to vote. Former residents of England, Scotland and Wales can quickly register at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. Anyone who last lived in Northern Ireland needs to download an overseas voter application form from the Electoral Office for Northern Ireland, at www.eoni.org.uk

Frozen to death

RESCUE WORKERS tried in vain to save a group of walkers who had gone out in the snow in the province of Castellón. A party of three walkers, two women and one man, called the emergency services on Saturday evening, saying that they were lost on the Ruta de set Pobles in the municipality of Castell de Cabres. Shortly after the call was made, the rescue services lost contact with the group, possibly due to a lack of signal, or a flat battery, which made locating them in the freezing cold more difficult. An estimated 70 specialist personnel were sent to search for the walkers, having to use snow ploughs to access the area. Sniffer dogs, Guardia Civil officers, snow rescue teams and the fire brigade were amongst the search party although, because of bad light and bad weather, they were forced to abandon the search until Sunday morning. On Sunday afternoon, rescuers located the man, who had left the two women to seek help. He led them to where the women were but, unfortunately, they had died from the cold. The man was rushed to Castellón General Hospital where he is being treated for extreme hypothermia.

Marijuana plantation shut down SEVERAL ARRESTS were made, as National Police officers dismantled a marijuana plantation in the city of Malaga. In the heart of Malaga’s industrial area, police swooped on an industrial unit in the San Luis Industrial Estate, having received information of a large illegal plantation. Operation “Security” officers raided the warehouse and found 4,304 plants, along with three men who were immediately arrested. The 400 square metre unit housed the plants in various stages of growth and, as well as recovering the plants, the officers found a collection of seeds ready for planting. The “greenhouse” unit was highly sophisticated, with acclimatisers, filters, high powered lamps, air extractors and ventilators being removed from the scene. Alicante province road improvements ALICANTE PROVINCIAL Council has announced an 150,000€ investment for road repairs and improvements in 31 municipalities. The 31 municipalities in Alicante will share 150,000€ in grants awarded by the Provincial Government to help with road repairs and improvements. The grants will be distributed to towns with a population of less than 5,000 residents to help fund their infrastructure, with each town being given 5,000€. Juan Molina, head of the highways division, said “this is very important for municipalities, improving road safety and for opening up new possibilities in economic development in agriculture and rural tourism.” The grants, aimed at repairs, cleaning and upgrading local roads, have already begun to roll out, with Alicante roads Agost Aigües and Torremanzanas being repaired and Benifallim and the Comtat, Alfafara Almudaina, Benimassot, Famorca, Facheca and Tollos also receiving aid. The Provincial Government will also subsidise road repairs in Benimeli, Castell de Castells, El Verger, Els Poblets, Ràfol D’Almunia and Sanet and Negrals, in the Marina Alta and Benimantell, Bolulla, Confrides, Polop, Relleu and Sella, in the Marina Baja.

Bank victims face financial ruin by Jack Troughton

VICTIMS OF a “premeditated” bank fraud face financial ruin and losing their homes unless they seek the protection of an action group, it was warned this week. Hundreds of elderly people signed up for an equity release scheme run by Landsbanki Luxembourg, an offshoot of the Icelandic bank which collapsed in 2008. Over 600 people across Europe – many living on the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol – took out loans with Landsbanki against the security of their homes, promised a ‘no risk’ deal. The scheme offered the ability of borrowing 25% of a home’s value, the remainder being invested by the bank and borrowers were promised the money would cover interest and even provide an income. However, it is alleged that since the bank failed, the administrator Yvette Hamilius has hounded pensioners who signed up for loans – despite their unusual position of being creditors and debtors. A criminal case against Landsbanki is expected to start in Paris next month and legal action is being prepared in Spain by the Landsbanki Victims Action Group – which has had members’

Key votes for coalition in Spain A CONFIDENCE vote took place this week with Spain’s Socialist party hoping to form a coalition government. The Socialists (PSOE) came second in December’s inconclusive elections and had until the end of this week to see if they could secure a majority in parliament. The Socialist Party leader, Pedro Sánchez, appealed to deputies to back his bid and the reforms he has planned.

However, as the other two main parties already saying they would not support the proposal, his chances of forming a coalition were slim. To become prime minister, Mr Sánchez needed the support of more than half of the chamber’s 350 deputies in Tuesday’s confidence vote. PSOE currently hold 130 seats, with the other two main parties191 seats. His bid failed by an 89 vote margin. Another vote will be held today, Friday, and if it fails to back a coalition, parliament has two months to choose a government - or face fresh elections on 26th June 2016.

How to negotiate roundabouts If you are unsure about the correct way to negotiate roundabouts, here are some simple rules to help you enter and exit roundabouts safely and in the right lane.

APPROACHING ROUNDABOUTS It’s important to remember to give way to traffic already on the roundabout. If the roundabout is outside urban areas of towns or cities, keep right. If the roundabout is in a built-up area inside a town or city and the lanes are clearly marked, you should use the lane that best corresponds to the exit you need to take. LEAVING ROUNDABOUTS This causes the most confusion amongst drivers. Which lane to choose? Why do I get beeped at if I’m in the right lane? Drivers must exit roundabouts from the right hand lane, because the only way to leave the roundabout is by turning right. This doesn’t mean we always have to enter the roundabout from the right hand lane. It depends on the exit we need to take. However this simple rule, in practice, can be more complex. Let us see some examples.

1st EXIT RIGHT Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate and exit roundabout. CONTINUING STRAIGHT ON (e.g. 2nd EXIT STRAIGHT AHEAD) Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate prior to exit and leave roundabout.

TURNING LEFT OR CHANGING DIRECTION (e.g. 3rd OR FINAL EXIT) Enter roundabout keeping to left hand side lane. Stay in lane until you have passed the exit before your turn off, then change lane by indicating right and giving other road users sufficient time to anticipate your manoeuvre. Eroski sells five of its hypermarkets to Carrefour by ian askew THE SPANISH supermarket chain, Eroski, is getting rid of its superstores in Murcia, Lorca, Águilas and San Javier, and keeping the ones in Molina and Cartagena. The Spanish chain Eroski has reached an agreement for the sale of its hypermarkets in Águilas, Murcia, San Javier and two in Lorca, as well as two filling stations linked to these centres, to the Carrefour supermarket chain. The only hypermarkets to be retained in the region are those at Molina and Cartagena, according to an announcement made this week by Eroski. This sale is part of a wider operation including 36 hypermarkets in Spain amounting to 205 million euros. The agreement requires the approval of the National Commission of Markets and Competition and is part of Eroski’s plan to improve the overall profitability of the group. The general director of commercial network of Eroski, Rosa Carabel, said that Murcia “is a priority area for us in the development of a new network of supermarkets”. Eroski plans to open 10 new franchised supermarkets in the area.

Cartagena roadworks postponed until after Easter THE HIGHWAYS Agency has accepted the request of Cartagena’s mayor, José López, to postpone the repair of the structure of the viaduct that brings the motorway from Murcia into Cartagena, until after Easter, to prevent traffic jams holding up visitors to the city during the period of the Easter parades. The works had been due to begin on Wednesday, 2nd March, 2 and will close, for two months, the two-lane entrance to the city. Because of this traffic will be diverted, via three alternative routes, before reaching the viaduct. This work will now be started a few days after Easter. The replacement of the viaduct’s parapet requires the closure of the entire carriageway, due to the danger of a vehicle colliding with the provisional barriers and falling from the viaduct, given that the viaduct passes over Madrid-Cartagena railway line. During the execution of the works, an estimated four months, diversions will be in operation: for two months on the route into Cartagena; and for another two months, on the outward route.

Repsol workers to be monitored for asbestosis by Ian Askew THE REGIONAL Health Authority will carry out this process at the request of the City of Cartagena, for employees of companies subcontracted by Repsol Petroleum, who have been exposed to this material. A statement to this effect has been issued on behalf of the Director General of Public Health and Addictions, for the Regional Health Authority, Manuel Molina Foix, in reply to a letter from the mayor of Cartagena, José López, stating the local government’s case, as agreed last December. This agreement called for the Health Authority to request Repsol and its subcontractors to produce details of former workers who might have been exposed to asbestos and, at the same time, request the University Hospital Santa Lucía,

in the case of future deaths of former employees who have been smokers and who were exposed to asbestos, to carry out autopsies and samplings of lung tissue, to be forwarded to the Vall d’Hebron Hospital, so that the relevant evidence sought by workers associations regarding former workers affected by asbestos could be collated. As a result, the Authority has now asked Repsol for details of workers who at some point had been connected with the company. The Directorate General of Public Health will now be tracking down subcontractors, under the powers it holds in the field of occupational health. Prison for church collection thief

THE ACCUSED man was spotted by a night watchman as he used pliers to extract an envelope containing a cheque for 90€ from a donations box in a church in Murcia. Murcia Appeal Court has rejected an appeal by a man sentenced by a criminal court. He had been sentenced to one year and ten months in prison for stealing a donation envelope, containing a cheque for 90€, from the Santo Domingo Church, in Murcia. To remove the envelope, according to the statement made to the court, he used wooden tweezers wrapped with adhesive tape, sticky side out. He had been observed by a night watchman, who confronted him, only to be invited by the accused to move to a nearby alley, where, he said, “I’ll punch you”. The night watchman, when threatened, let him go, but followed at a safe distance, having alerted the police, who arrested him. They discovered, on the accused’s person, the envelope he had taken, and also observed him throwing away a screwdriver and a box containing clamps and tape. In his unsuccessful appeal, the convicted thief argued he was not the person who had taken the envelope, and the night watchman could have been confused because it was dark at night.

The Brotherhood of Salomé fill their float with food

MORE THAN 900 kilos of products were placed on the float by locals for donation to Cáritas. Totana is preparing for the Easter celebrations and processions, and one of the local brotherhoods had the idea to turn one of their rehearsals into a charity event. Last weekend, with the aim of collecting non-perishable food for Cáritas, they practiced carrying their float through the streets but without the statue on the float, so that local residents could place on the float their donations of food for the needy. The float was composed of the original rods fixed to a board, so it was lighter than usual. Normally, the statues on the float weigh some 140 kilos but the 25 members of the brotherhood who carried it were not expecting the generosity of their neighbours. Their idea was very successful, as they collected more than 900 kilos of food. In total, they walked a distance of two kilometres. En route, a young man had to stay on the float to distribute the products to balance the weight, and, because of the weight, the procession, as it passed the Cáritas headquarters, had to offload the produce collected up to that point, in order for the procession to continue.

Tráfico hands out fines

SPEEDING, ITV matters, and drivers’ hours are the most common reasons for fines.

A total of 184 lorries and 280 vans were sanctioned during the special surveillance campaign developed by the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) between 15th and 21st February, which represents 13.50% of the total of 3,435 vehicles checked that week, according to government sources. Some of the vehicles checked infringed more than one law, and speeding was the most common reason for complaint, followed by tachograph irregularities. In the previous campaign of this kind, held in February 2015, 10.30% of the 2,428 vehicles checked were found to be committing offences. Vans and freight transport form part of one of the eleven areas of action included in the Road Safety Strategy 2011-2020.

Mar Menor protest postponed The protest in Murcia organised by the Federation of Neighbourhood Associations about the lack of action to clean up the beaches at the southern end of the Mar Menor, has been posponed for one week. After excavation machinery and bulldozers to remove the three dykes before April 1st began to arrive in the town of Los Urrutias at the beginning of this week, the Federation of Neighborhood Associations of the District of Cartagena decided to postpone the demonstration planned for Tuesday in Murcia. Cartagena’s mayor, José López, one of the driving forces behind the protest, went to see the situation for himself. “This is a first step,” said excavator in Los Urrutias by a dyke the mayor. “The Residents’ Association of Los Urrutias planned to hold four demonstrations, one every Tuesday in March, in the capital. The first was cancelled but the other three are still scheduled to take place.” The Regional Authority released last Friday the 70,000€ budgeted for the works, but the contract with the chosen company, Construcciones SA Castillejos, part of the Ferrovial Group, are still unsigned. “In addition, their technicians still have to produce a health and safety plan, which will take a further 48 hours,” said José López. After these formalities are completed, work can begin. The works are scheduled to last four weeks, which means the beaches will not be ready for Easter. This was acknowledged by the president of the Los Urrutias Neighborhood Association, , Severo Sánchez . “The company and the Coastal Authority are agreed that shifts will be necessary for the works to be completed by April 1st,” he said.

Rosell re-opens operating theatres

THE DOORS to the new minor surgery unit at Cartagena’s Santa María del Rosell Hospital, opened on Tuesday, and patients started arriving at the admissions desk at about 7.30am. Ten operating theatres, which have stood idle for more than four years, are once again fully functional, and are expected to accommodate about 50 patients a day. The plan is to centralize, at Rosell, most of the surgeries that require admission to hospital for less than three days. The Regional Health Authority expects to maintain that number of patients on average per day, split between Minor Surgery, Ambulatory Surgery (CMA) and Surgery with Admission to Hospital (CCI) in order to reduce waiting lists. The Regional Minister of Health, Encarna Guillén said that “this action is part of the commitment made by regional and local government last November.” Overall, the unit contains 30 beds and three special postsurgical monitoring beds with 24-hour coverage. The second phase of the plan for Rosell includes the opening of a Short Stay Unit, with 14 beds, for observation and monitoring of patients admitted for less than 72 hours, which will help optimize hospital resources. Guillén added that, before the end of 2016, the Palliative Care Unit will also become operational. This will have eight individual rooms for the comfort and privacy of relatives of patients. The unit at Rosell Hospital will include specialised Health Care Teams and the Home Hospitalisation Unit, scheduled for the first quarter of next year.

Eight arrested in the Campo de Cartagena by IAN ASKEW

HALF A ton of citrus fruit, and three thousand stolen onions, have been recovered by the Murcia Region’s Guardia Civil, as part of their new initiative against agricultural and livestock theft. Several different investigations into the removal of horticultural products and livestock, in various agricultural and livestock farms in the region of the Campo de Cartagena, have resulted in the arrest of five people, and the investigation of three others, as alleged perpetrators of the crimes of burglary, theft and damage to property. One investigation began earlier this year, after Guardia Civil agents from the ROCA squad, (the agricultural burglary unit)) were made aware of the rustling of nine pigs at a farm in the village of Los Cánovas, Fuente

Álamo. As their investigation was proceeding, three other animals were taken from the same farm, using the same method, breaking open the farm’s perimeter fence. This repeat crime put the Guardia Civil agents on the trail of a group of people, one of whom was already serving a prison sentence for offenses of the same nature. Other agents from the ROCA unit investigated the removal of fruit from several farms, culminating in the arrest of four persons as alleged perpetrators of crimes of theft and property damage, and the recovery of close to half a ton of citrus fruit. Inquiries have focused on identifying and arresting the perpetrators of the theft of large quantities of oranges, tangerines and lemons on farms located in the countryside near Cartagena and the districts of Santa Ana and La Aparecida.

Observation of various weekly markets allowed agents to identify a person, living in a village in the municipality, where they found three thousand stolen onions, which were recovered and returned to their rightful owner.

NeighboUrhood patrols in La Aljorra are working THE ‘NO more robberies’ campaign has led to a reduction in the number of crimes reported, despite a reduction in the police presence in the town.

“The police do not patrol at night, so we, the taxpayers, have to do it ourselves, claimed Francisco González, one of the members of the nightly neighborhood patrols who walk the streets in La Aljorra, to prevent the break-ins which have sown fear among residents in recent months. “Since we started out, the number of incidents has dropped, but it is still happening. Cartagena’s university buys 10 electric bikes, made by former students, will be used by university staff to travel between campuses. The Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) has purchased 10 electric pedal-assist bicycles that have been delivered to the various centres and some of the administrative units, to facilitate daily travel between different parts of the campus. The bicycles were purchased from a company formed by three former students of the educational institution. Sources at Cartagena’s university indicated that the vehicles, whose purchase was included in their programme of promoting sustainable mobility, were developed and manufactured by Outheway Intermediarios de Ingeniería S.L., a company founded by three former students of the School of Industrial Engineering. The bicycles, which are customized with the corporate image of UPCT, are equipped with 250 watt electric motors on the front wheels, and electronic controls installed on the handlebars, and can reach a maximum speed of 25 kph. The vehicles have a range of over 40 kilometres, thanks to their rechargeable lithium batteries, and some of the bicycles are collapsible for easy storage inside buildings.

New bridge brings AVE to Murcia

WORKS TO replace the Tiñosa road bridge, which represents the ‘gateway’ of the AVE to the city of Murcia, have been started by the railway infrastructure administrator (Adif), after it was awarded the contract last September. This project is considered essential for the high-speed train to enter the city, since the viaduct needs to be replaced by another of greater height to accommodate the overhead catenary system used by the train.

New cast speculation for Benidorm AS SERIES 8 of the very popular television programme, Benidorm, finished last week, on Tuesday, Amazon launched the sale of the DVD. However, there are currently no plans for a box set of series 1-8. As the cast prepare to travel to the resort for filming in the next couple of weeks, with the producer and support crew already arriving, there is a rumour that White Dee, real name Dee Kelly, a popular character from the television programmep Benefits Streetp is in talks with the makers of the Benidorm series about a small rôle. Although nothing has been confirmed, the British press have been speculating about such a possibility, and Dee’s manager, Barry Tomes, told RTN that “this is just one of a few shows we have targeted for Dee Kelly. As with all the shows, we cannot confirm or deny anything until the TV production companies make official announcements.” A spokesman for Tiger production told RTN, “This is news to us all. We have had no discussion with Dee Kelly or her management. Naked Gun actor dies ANOTHER ACTING legend has died as it has been announced that George Kennedy died of old age. Kennedy, aged 91, passed away on Sunday at his warden assisted home in Idaho, America, his grandson announced to international media. The actor won an Oscar for his role in the 1967 film, Cool Hand Luke, where he stared, alongside Paul Newman, as a chain-gang boss. Later in his career, he turned to comedy and became a familiar face in the Naked Gun series of films, as well as the 1970 Airport film and sequels. Many well known stars have come forward to pay tribute to the actor, including Bo Derek, who co-stared with George in the 1984 film Bolero. Liberty Seguros donate to Paul Cunningham Nurses Charity

DENNIS SMOOLENAARS and Carlos Sánchez, from Liberty Seguros, handed over a hospital bed and two intensive care pressure relieving mattresses to Tracy, a Paul Cunningham Nurses Charity representative.

The donation was made in December, but the presentation was delayed, as the bed and mattress were put into immediate use by a terminally ill patient. Paul Cunningham Nurses Charity is very grateful to Liberty Seguros for this timely and generous donation.

Costa says goodbye to Shirley FAMILY AND friends of Shirley Baehr, a hard working member of the Jewish community and of Moraira-Teulada U3A, said goodbye at a moving funeral service. Farewells were said at the Jewish Cemetery in Benidorm to the 64-year-old, who died after a short illness, but will be remembered for working tirelessly for others and was described as being “an inspirational, indefatigable lady”. Shirley and husband Laurence first bought a Costa Blanca home in Calpe after visiting the area over Christmas 2003 and moved permanently to Spain in 2006, buying a villa in Moraira. She was a founder member of the branch of U3A in 2008 and became a committee member and Groups Coordinator but always found time to work within the Jewish community and was secretary to the Communidad Israelita de Alicante. Born in April 1951, Shirley was educated at various London schools before studying at the Pitman’s college in Southampton Row. At 17, she won her first job as personal assistant to the International Manager at Lou Grade’s Pye Records. Refused a pay rise because of her age but realising she was doing the most work in the office, Shirley switched to Apple Records – of Beatles fame – after attending an interview in a green suit with matching leather gloves. Gaining more responsibility within parent company EMI, when Apple closed in 1975 she took the job as the label’s Product Manager and became the only female executive. She dealt directly with the Beatles – she knew the Fab Four from her Apple days – as well as stars like Cilla Black, Cliff Richards and the Shadows, Olivia Newton-John, and Kate Bush. She met Laurence in the late 1980s, bought a house in Mill Hill and married in December 1990, before the answered the call to move to the sun. A devoted animal lover and dog owner, she regularly held parties to raise money for charity. According to friends: “She was always on the go; always willing to help people; always the first to volunteer; and always friendly”. Associates said Shirley would be greatly missed “and our hearts go out to Laurence, to her sister Helen, and to all her family.”

FANS OF four-wheel drive giants enjoyed watching the trucks put through their paces at the second edition of ‘Matinal 4x4 Teulada’. Hundreds of spectators were thrilled as more than 50 vehicles were put through their paces over a specially designed and challenging ‘off road’ course at Font Santa. And amongst the exhaust fumes and adrenaline, crew also contributed to a food collection organized by the Rotary Club. The Red Cross will distribute the proceeds of the day to families in need.

Helping hands

U3A Vall del Pop presented 270€ of food to Caritas from cash raised through members donations and a Christmas raffle. Liaising with Jalon Valley Help – and with the aid of the charity’s van – U3A committee members went shopping to buy food, cleaning materials and toiletries. Caritas keeps HELP informed of the products most needed; armed with a shopping list, it was a bulk buying spree. And it was discovered that it was frequently single people that needed support rather than family units. U3A now has a list of the most needed items should members wish to make a donation at the association’s monthly meetings – and cash gifts will be collected for another trip to the cash and carry.

Denia Knitting Club is up and running THE CLUB meets at the Cafe Zimpstern, Calle Joan Fuster, in Denia on Tuesdays from 3pm to 5pm. All interested in knitting crochet, etc. are welcome. There is currently no charge for attendance.

Beatles in the attic THE MUSIC world went into a spin with the discovery of a rare Beatles record that has remained hidden in an attic for over 50 years. The 10-inch vinyl recording was cut at the HMV shop in London’s Oxford Street and features the Fab Four’s songs ‘Till There Was You’ and ‘Hello Little Girl’. And described as a “Holy Grail item”, the record has become a classic ‘cash in the attic’ find – it is up for auction later this month at a sale being run by Omega Auctions in Warrington and is tipped to make at least £10,000. The record was found in the loft of Les Maguire, former keyboard player with Gerry and the Pacemakers, another Liverpool band discovered in the Merseybeat boom. He was given the record by Beatles manager Brian Epstein in 1963 and Epstein’s handwriting can be seen on the label of the disc. It was first given to producer George Martin in a bid to get him to sign the then largely unknown Beatles. Les said of the treasure: “I’ve never been a big fan of memorabilia, but people seem to like it. “It’s no good to me so I’ve given it to my granddaughter, who is hoping to buy a house after passing her accountancy exams. I hope it goes for a good price.” According to Beatles historian Mark Lewisohn, the value of the record was “enhanced” by Epstein’s handwriting and “the recognition of what it led to”. The public love affair with the Fab Four continues. It was recently announced The Beatles made an annual contribution to the Liverpool economy of £82 million.

Trump dominates in the US DONALD TRUMP, the Republican hopeful for the presidency in America, has dominated the latest candidate voting, as results were announced throughout Tuesday night for several states. In what was called “super Tuesday”, the White House hopefuls verbally battled against each other in a bid to secure votes from 12 of the US states. Outspoken Trump, who runs on the “we’ll make US great again”, steamrollered the other Republican candidates, taking 7 of the 12 states. Republican Party leaders fear Mr Trump will ruin their chances of recapturing the White House, after President Barack Obama’s two terms, because of his inflammatory outbursts, including the suggestion of building a wall between Mexico and America. Hilary Clinton, who is fighting for the Democratic nomination, also took 7 of the 12 states, although her rival, Vermont senator Bernie Sanders, still has strong support. Mrs Clinton hopes to become America’s first female president, and, whilst thanking her supporters late Tuesday evening, she gave a direct challenge to Donald Trump, saying “instead of building walls, we are going to break down barriers,” a reference to his style of policy.

When the BBC took me on albeit, in a low paid freelance capacity, I rather delusionally thought the rotating sound you could hear was emanating from Lord Reith’s grave because a ragamuffin like me had shattered the plebeian glass ceiling while he wasn’t looking. No! I was but a tiny insignificant cog in his grand scheme of things. Although Reithian became an adjective signifying the moral high ground, allegedly, he did like to dally with young damsels, loathed Churchill but rather admired the Austrian Corporal. Mind you, despite these dubious misjudgements, he’s still a giant amongst the pygmies now running the corporation. My first task at the Beeb was to sort out the record library which was stuffed full of Manuel & His Music Of The Mountains L.P.’s (under 60’s – google). The librarian said “Let’s get groovy man.” (it was the ‘70’s man). So I re-stocked the music library with cutting edge painfully coooool! acts like Bay City Rollers, Nolans, Paper Lace & the High Priest of Hip, Gilbert O’Sullivan. Impressed huh? For my industrious endeavours turning the radio station into a way-out with-it wonderland (Rubettes anyone?), I was allowed to do my first recorded interview, note the ‘recorded’ bit faithful reader. The reason? During a live sports broadcast I reported that a footballer had “passed a fitness test.” Unfortunately I had an attack of the Spoonerism’s and it came out the player had “pissed a fatness test.” No more live stuff for the boy Ashley, which was just as well as my first interviewee took an instant dislike to me, because I tweaked his fragile ego a tad. The name of this shrinking violet? Larry Lurex aka Freddie Mercury. Trying to jump on the Gary Glitter bandwagon (today you’d place a whole lot of gone between yourself & that particular vehicle) he made a record ‘I Can Hear Music’ which tanked. The soon to be famous singer wasn’t keen to rehash the past, so needless to say I asked him about it. Fred’s only contribution to this discourse was “p*** off” as he made a Queenly exit. EMI had sent me 6 copies of the disc, in high dudgeon, I used them as frisbees. After Freddie/Larry died almost 20 years later they were worth around £150 each. Doh! x 6.

I signed a purchase deposit contract as a seller, on it was agreed that if I do not fulfil the contract I must return double the deposit received. Now, we have an appointment to go to the notary, but I do not want to sell. I have informed the buyer that it is my intention not to sell and return double the money given, but he says that he does not agree, and I must sell the house. Is that correct? What should I do?

Dear Reader, Thank you for your enquiry, but to order to advise correctly we must see the contract. In any case, I understand that the legal key in your case, is to determine if on your reservation or deposit contract (which should be a purchase contract), you agreed a penalty clause / deposit or what is called in Spanish Law, arras penitenciales or penitential deposit. Criminal arras / deposit or penalty clauses are those for which there is agreed a penalty or how the buyer or seller shall compensate should they not fulfill the contract to the other party, but the clause does not mean or authorize any of the parties of the contract to terminate the contract unilaterally, always the other party that wants to fulfil the contract, if it is possible, could enforce the agreement. For its part, the arras “penitenciales” or penitential deposits, are those by which the parties agree the possibility to unilaterally terminate the deposit agreement, reservation or purchase contract, paying an amount without the other party being able to force the fulfilment of the contract. Jurisprudence and legal doctrine require these kind of clauses to be drawn very clearly, and they are regulated in the article 1454 of the Spanish Civil Code, which reads: “If earnest money or a deposit should have been provided in a contract of sale and purchase, the contract may be rescinded by the purchaser by agreeing to forfeit the earnest money or deposit,

or the seller to return it in duplicate.“ For example, if in your contract it states something similar to: The parties agree that in case of breach of the contract the seller must compensate the buyer paying the money back in duplicate. In case of a breach by the buyer, he will lose the amount paid. In this case, this would be a penalty deposit or clause in which the parties agree that if you do not fulfil the contract as vendor, you must compensate with the amount agreed. But this clause does not entitle you to terminate the contract unilaterally or rescind it, so that if the buyer still wants to buy, you can be forced to sell the property and respect what was agreed in the contract, even if you do not want to. If instead, in your contract it says something like: The parties agree under Article 1454 of the Civil

Code, that any party may unilaterally terminate the contract. If it is rescinded by the buyer, he will lose the money paid, and if is the seller, he must return the money received in duplicate. In this case, we would have a “reservation” or purchase containing a penitential deposit, and therefore, if you choose not to sell the property and unilaterally terminate the contract signed, you could do so, by returning the double the money received, the other party could not force you to sell. Although both clauses have similar wording, their legal effects are very different. It is essential when buying or selling, to make sure that you receive expert legal advice, and that the wording of the agreements that you sign protect your rights and interests. Before you say YES and spend any of your hard earned money with any website who contacts you – here are the things to consider. Q * Is the soliciting website new or an old one? A * New websites will have no traffic as it takes a long time to be indexed by Google these days due to the amount of new sites coming onboard the Internet. There is no set time for Google specifically to initially index a website – the time taken can vary based on: • Popularity of the site (whether it has any inbound links to it) • Whether the content is crawl-able (server responses and content type) • Site structure (how pages interlink) Q * Does the soliciting website already have adverts by Google Adwords on it? A * A website has to be up and running for 6 months with a steady stream of traffic and no violations of content copyright and a bunch of other things before Google will approve a website to host their adverts. So – if the website who is soliciting you for advertising has been approved by Google Adwords – then it will be worth a look. Q * Have you personally seen the soliciting websites traffic performance on a tracking system like Google Analytics? A * If the soliciting website won’t share their traffic data – then step away!! It means trouble. Q * Have you searched for the soliciting website in Google and found them easily? A * If you type into Google some general words about your area - and do not find the website that is soliciting you – then you know that they have not been indexed and again – back away. Growing healthy fruit trees for healthy crops By Greenfingers Spain is a wonderful country in which to grow fruit and most gardens have at least a token orange and lemon tree and some have luxurious orchards of subtropical fruits or in cooler areas of olives, almonds, apricots, peaches and plums. Whatever you have or plan March is the most important month in the fruit growing calendar for new fruit trees, bushes and plants need planting and established trees need caring for after the generally dormant winter months. However from the many fruit related questions asked at the talks we have given up and down the country it is obvious that many of our readers have problems. Problems that start with the choice and planting of trees, and then relate to their seasonal prunings, watering, spraying and harvesting. Additionally as more and more readers move inland to escape the overbuilt coastal plains they are faced with the daunting task of reinvigorating abandoned orchards. We answer ten of the most frequently asked questions below. WHAT CAN I PLANT? There are over seventy fruits regularly grown in Spain but do restrict yourself to what is hardy in your area. Tropical and subtropical fruits will be possible along the hottest southerly costas but are a risk in inland valleys and on mountainsides where even one nights heavy air frost can be devastating.

especially if you have a clayey soil. SHOULD I ENRICH THE SOIL? The ancient Spanish custom of ‘feeding the soil rather than feeding the plants’ should be followed. Work in a builders bucket of good compost and one of well rotted manure or bagged dried manure into an area of one square metre of soil and a depth of half a metre a week or two before planting trees, bushes or plants. SHOULD YOUNG FRUIT TREES BE IMMEDIATELY PRUNED WHEN PLANTED. It’s preferable to not prune them at that stage but leave for a year or two to allow the roots to establish themselves and the tree to start to grow naturally. You can then select the strongest growing branches to create the framework of each tree. WHAT IS THE MOST USEFUL GENERAL INSECTICIDE FOR FRUIT TREES? We use a spray based on neem oil. Trabe is one of the brands to look for. If you cannot find it you can purchase it by mail order via www.trabe.net.

WHEN SHOULD I PLANT THEM? Although potted trees are available for much of the year we prefer to plant deciduous fruit trees in the autumn or early spring but delay frost tender citrus trees until after the last danger of frosts.

HOW MUCH GROWTH SHOULD BE PRUNED OFF A MATURE TREE EACH YEAR? There are several reasons for pruning trees and several possible end shapes. As a general rule a 20% pruning may be sufficient each winter or spring – depending on the type of tree – for a well shaped healthy tree while 60 to 80% of unhealthy neglected tree may need to be cut out. If you have recently purchased an inland property with several hundred trees you may have a major task ahead of you.

IS SPECIAL CARE REQUIRED WHEN PLANTING THEM? Yes poor planting is one of the main reasons why fruit trees, bushes and plants fail to grow, flower and fruit well. It’s important that you prepare the ground well and plant the roots in large planting holes. Holes dug the size of the plastic tube or pot in which you purchased the trees is doomed to failure

HOW MUCH WATER DO YOUNG TREES NEED? It is important to keep the soil around the deepest growing roots just moist. If you only saturate the top few centimetres roots can dry out and the tree eventually die. A good deep soak once a week is better than a shallow daily watering. Also do not water close to the trunk as this can cause fungal attacks.

Locked account DEAR AUNTY V, My hotmail.com a/c was recently suspended due to ‘irregular activity by an outside agency’ ie. somebody tried to access my a/c. I have tried unsuccessfully many times to get it back but I just go round in circles and my emails to various hotmail depts. are just ignored. Does anyone know how to get back a suspended account? Note that they require an alternate email address from you so they can verify and contact you. https://account.live.com/acsr Alternatively you can go and try to reset the password, where you may also be asked your hotmail security questions. https://account.live.com/resetpassword.aspx Note, though, that in some cases it can take a few days or weeks before accounts are unblocked, as they try to make sure you are who you say you are.

‘‘Missing file’’ HELLO AUNTY. When I start up my Acer laptop I get a “missing file” message. I think it happened after I ungraded to Windows 10 but before that I did clear some unused programs so could have deleted something I should not have! Please can you tell me how I can overcome this problem without buying somebody’s software to do so. Thank you. Helen Aunty says: The most common reason for this error message is that you have some “malware” on your system, usually from installing some free software that has some “advert software” bundled in. As I have mentioned in past articles, people generally install free software using the default install options, which can install

some unwanted bundled software as well. It is always advisable, when installing free software, to go for the advanced or expert install options where you can select not to install the bundled software. A scan of your PC using an anti-malware program ,like Anti Malware bytes, or AdwCleaner, or Ad Aware (all available for free) should locate and remove this software. It may be advisable to go into your “uninstall programs” list in Control Panel and see if you have some unwanted advertising software installed before you run these programs. Response: Thank you so much. My anti-malware did not pick it up but installing and running the Adwcleaner did the trick.

Incorrect Colours Hi Aunty, I have an HP laptop and a Cannon printer. If I put a photograph in the printer and PRINT it, it comes out with the correct colours, but when I SCAN the photo to a Picasa file on my laptop, it only comes out blue. I have tried clicking on to some colour adjustments, but can only change it to sepia. Can you help? Thank you, Margaret

Reply: Rather than using Picasa to scan documents, try your Cannon printers scanning software instead. Or the built in Windows scanning software. It may be that Picasa does not fully recognise your Cannon drivers, hence the funny colours appearing.

Enjoy a trip to the barbershop by Jack Troughton WORLD CHAMPION harmony groups are starring in ‘A Capella Magic’, a Costa Blanca concert featuring barbershop singing. Quartets ‘LoveNotes’, from the United States, and ‘Musical Island Boys’, from New Zealand, are appearing in the show on 31st March at the Casa de Cultura, Calpe – which also features performances by students of Marcia’s Dance Centre and stage School. The evening is organised by the Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers (SABS), which is visiting the Marina Alta resort for its annual convention, being held from 31st March to 3rd April. Around 600 singers and fans of barbershop will be in Calpe for this international event; including visitors from Russia, Sweden, Holland, Ireland and the UK. SABS was founded in October 2008 by brothers Nico and Jorge de las Penas after they took part in their first ever ‘harmony college’ in Coesfeld, Germany. And SABS President and founder member Lyn Baines said: “Barbershop in 2016 is very different to what it was when it started to grow away from its African-American roots between the First and second World Wars, when only men took part. “Today, the barbershop style of singing is enjoyed by male and female quartets and choruses throughout the world.” She added: In the fifties and sixties, singers like Andy Williams, dick Van dyke and even the Osmonds made the style popular. Today’s champions sing traditional and very modern songs.” Everyone who likes good music with some comedy thrown into the mix will enjoy ‘A Cappella Magic’. Whatever goes around, comes around is the often spoken about law of karmic energy. People say that you get what you deserve, but isn’t it harder to think the other way round sometimes, and that we deserve what we get?

I always try to find the answer when good people seem to be suffering for no fault of their own. I am somebody who is first to promote and advocate the free access we all have to the Angelic Realms; but even I shudder when such daily atrocities hurt those who certainly don’t deserve it. Why do things happen that cause harm and distress to those who do not warrant it? Whilst terrorism may not prevent us from subscribing to fear, it is killing torturing and maiming the innocent and the unprotected. Why are people forced from their homes and their Countries? Why do earthquakes reduce homes to rubble and kill so many beneath them? How can people lose their homes in seconds as a tornado twists across the sky, and why does lightening strike? With such terrible things happening in a World that sees paedophilia also striking out and global greed standing in the face of abject poverty; where is the control? Why can’t good triumph over evil, and why must those who suffer possibly go on to suffer yet more? It is a weak and woolly resolve to even suggest that worse things could happen were it not for the power of Spiritual energies, even if their popularity is criss crossing the World with gusto. This may be very true, and it actually is, but it does nothing but offer the coldest of comforts to someone who has fought Cancer and lost, or who grieves for a lost son or daughter; living in hope that one day they may open the garden gate and walk back into the family. Our children are growing up untouchable and mechanistic, and where will this lead if the News bombards us daily with the sheer hell of ISIS, and that annually half a million kittens and puppies are rescued from starvation and appalling cruelty in the UK alone? Where is love? Children want killing games on their Playstations and are smoking Cannabis in Primary School playgrounds; when we were filled with Alice and Wonderland and the Saturday Morning Children’s Club at the local Odeon Cinema. This makes me feel even older than I am, and karma, will it thrust a deal with the elderly who are being abused by those who are seen to be helping in the process, or are they a chance for the truly despicable to merely help themselves? It is easy to have a very jaundiced view of life these days, and I do know the great difference that Spirit has made to my life. I am mindful that I am able to devote my life to working to prove that we do not die, and that therfefore death is the great beginning; and I am so grateful to be able to serve Spirit because I believe in them, and them in me. Though I shudder at the pain people are suffering I always try to do whatever I can to help. I have been amongst the sick and the dying and I have seen some frightening sights in my time, I can tell you. Times when you wish for resolve and healing and any justification when things have gone horribly wrong, as they can do. My brother left this life when he was only 38 minutes old, whereas I have had 61 good years here on Earth in this lifetime, so far.....and yes, I have said that maybe my deceased sibling was the really lucky one! I never mean it though, because I know that whatever is to come I am a part of a process that will always try to be on the side of love, even in a World that appears not to care and which has lost its way. I will always try to let my little light shine on the darkest night, for those who just may need it to!

Kenny, I have problems with my spirituality because I am a Christian at heart. I want to learn more but I never want to lose my religion either. Mary A. Mary, there is a prayer of Christianity that is a feature of the Holy Communion service. It is the prayer of the Blessed Trinity and it says, “I believe in God the Father, I believe in God the Son, I believe in God the Holy Spirit/Holy Ghost” Therefore there can be no argument that all Christians have to accept the gnostic notion that Spirituality exists, and that their religion is based on the miracle of life after death after the murder of Jesus, and his strong ability to have survived his death. Be strong in your faith knowing that, as a Christian, you are subscribing to an entire religion based on this proclaimed evidence of survival!

Jaguars – Big Cats in Heredades

by patricia thompson LAST SUNDAY the big cats, 18 cars containing 45 people, gathered somewhere new, Casa Antonio in Heredades. On arrival, most people gathered in the conservatory. An impressive lunch started just before 1:30pm and went on until around 6pm. During the course of the afternoon, Colin Stickland was awarded 2015 Character of the Year, for his enthusiasm and support of the club. Apparently, Hans Nilsson is addicted to M&Ms, so Hans was awarded two bags of M&Ms for supporting the British confectionery industry. A trophy was also presented to the Restaurant Manager. The club’s next meeting is the Spa Break at Balneario De Archena Spa

Travelling Smart

WITH ACCESS to the internet, these days it is so easy to go online, search and find your desired flights or holiday. You can even find programmes to compare and get you the best deals. However booking a holiday is so much more than just a few commands on your computer, a payment by credit card and packing your suitcase. Always remember to check the country that you want to travel to, for Visa requirements and/or medical requirements. Forgetting to check the latter can leave you feeling, literally, rotten (at best) and perhaps can even lead to long term illnesses if proper precautions are not followed! For UK passport holders, the Foreign & Commonwealth office maintains an up-to-date web page where you can check on all requirements for travelling worldwide. If in doubt, you should always double check with your own embassy, for the official travel information for your destination. Right now, certain tour operators and Cruise companies are offering a free transfer to another holiday for pregnant woman already booked who are travelling to a region that has been confirmed for the Zika virus. This is one of the very good reasons to always book with reliable companies, as they can and will assist whenever there is an emerging situation. Similarly, cruise companies will change destinations if they feel that there is any dubiety whatsoever regarding the proposed destination. Whilst for some, it may mean missing out on the highlight of the holiday if that change is made en-route, this is still a better option than being taken to a planned destination if there exists the smallest doubt that your travels there may not be safe. And on the subject of cruises and Visas – do your homework! If your cruise is going to visit a country that requires a Visa, then it´s your responsibility to obtain this, in good time, in advance of your cruise. Even if it is not your intention to disembark at the destination, a valid Visa needs to be in place for you to travel, and this normally is checked at embarkation of your cruise. Some cruise companies will deny embarkation, in others you will have to disembark before the proposed port/country and fly (at your own expense) to the next available port in order to recover your cruise. Not an ideal way to travel! Visa requirements change, so make sure the information you have is up to date – as of March this year, Canada have implemented an Online Visa, similar to that of the US. All passengers will require to have this electronic visa associated to their passport to gain entry into the country – even for those in transit. The US, of course, is one of the most well-known countries for requiring a Visa – either an ESTA if your passport qualifies for this, or a full Non-Immigrant Visa issued from the Embassy. Australia, one of the most travelled destinations for the Brits, also requires a Visa to be issued, and this becomes more complicated with age – sometimes necessitating a medical certificate to accompany the Visa. India, China and Russia are the next big three destinations, all requiring a Visa. Issued from Spain, an Indian Visa is about 3 times the price of purchasing this from their UK embassy, however if you no longer have a UK address, then Spain is your only option. Luckily, they have recently introduced a new on-line version, however this is still only for certain airports and does not include cruise ports. Thankfully, the UK passport is ranked joint No. 1 as the passport that is accepted into the most countries worldwide, and whilst some countries do require the type of visas outlined here, many others are simply an exit/entry visa requiring a minimal payment to the authorities, usually at the airport or port of entry. However when you pick up those brochures and choose a hotel, make sure you check on all the extras – it could cost you a lot more than you imagined if you don´t!

Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre furniture store by PATRICIA THOMSPON

EASY HORSE Care Rescue Centre’s charity shop at Gran Alacant has just become a furniture store, selling only high-quality second hand home furnishings, at affordable prices. According to centre co-founder, Sue Weeding, the new store, behind a much smaller existing rescue centre charity shop, is just for furniture. “I felt people would gladly donate unwanted items of furniture if they knew someone would come and pick them up,” Sue said, adding “We’d like to open up more furniture stores and expand down to Benidorm if possible.” Donations of good-quality furniture to stock the store are gratefully welcomed. The rescue centre has now expanded its free pick-up service for large donated items to cover much of the Alicante region, and the shop also offers a delivery service for large items purchased in-store. The horse rescue centre, which relies entirely on donations, requires at least 4000€ a week just to cover the ongoing equine feeding and care costs, with specialist veterinary treatment and rescue operations presenting an additional cost. “We have to be inventive because of our increasing numbers of rescued horses, ponies and donkeys, which we must keep taking in as we are currently the only option for the police. We’ll soon be up to 100 equines and we have to find ways to continue to care for them professionally. The shops are the only way forward,” Sue said. To donate furniture, call Sue on 652 02 19 80. The centre also needs volunteers, especially with experience in sales. The Gran Alacant store, at Ave Holanda, next to the DialPrix supermarket, and staffed entirely by volunteers, is open Mondays to Fridays from 10am to 4pm and Saturdays from 10am to 2pm. The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, just outside Rojales at Partido Lo Garriga, 59, opens to the public on the first Sunday of every month between 1pm and 4pm. The pair met last year on the set of the musical TV comedy ‘Galavant’, which Joshua stars in, and it’s said they´ve been loved up since September having made several public appearances together, and Joshua starred in Kylie´s festive single video, ‘Every Day’s Like Christmas’. After weeks of full on interest from the media, we now know that they plan to tie the knot in the traditional way with an announcement in the Daily Telegraph. Can we possibly love her more?

Russell Brand pops up after quite a long gap and as usual its way out there stuff. His lifestyle will always be measured by the content of his 2014 book ´Revolution´ in which, for example, he heavily criticised tax-dodging companies, only to be found he was renting a very pricey London apartment from a company registered in a tax haven. Now according to The Sun he is lording it at his postcard-worthy, six-bed, riverside retreat in Henley-on-Thames, lounging around taking pictures of swans. Will Brands revolutionary buddies drop in for tea and cake down by the river don’t you know?

Bill and the ‘Old Bill’ bang heads in California! Could ´Strictly Come Dancing´ possibly become a ´Cool Show, ´ the reason I say this is that Bez, the singer of The Happy Mondays is currently begging the producers to give him a shot on the programme. Real name Mark Berry told the Daily Mirror. ‘I reckon I could go all the way, dancing has made me famous, and entertaining people is what I do best. I’ve lost count of the number of blokes who’ve come up to me over the years and said ´thanks for making it OK for indie guys to get on the dance floor.” Bez won Celebrity Big Brother in 2005. Could he win Strictly too!

BILL MURRAY became a huge overnight star in 1984 when he played Dr Peter Venkman in Ghostbusters, even although he´d already made 11 films since his career began in 1976. Born in Evanston, Illinois in 1950, and being from a Catholic Irish American family, he was one of nine children. He’s made 52 more films since Ghostbusters, suggesting he’s man who loves making movies. Bill got into a bit of bother last week when at the Vesuvio rooftop lounge, a popular bar in Carmel, Calif, and a few fans started snapping pictures of him on their mobile phones. Not a happy bunny, Bill got up from his seat, grabbed a few of the said mobiles, took them over to the railings, and hurled them off the second-story rooftop … he surely did! Scott Rose, who owns the bar, came to Murray’s defence saying “the fans were rather obvious as they snapped his photo, with flashes going off 10 feet away from him,” yep! that would get you rattled I’d imagine! Oh yes and Scott did add “the actor was not drinking.” Thanks Scott.In the mêlée the police were called but Bill left long before they arrived, which suggests he’s not only a good actor, but a smart one. Scott re-enters the picture announcing “Since celebrities come in quite often, as of today there will be changes in bar policy … No phones and no pictures! Our hero was in the town to play in the annual Pebble Beach Pro-Am golf tournament. The police eventually caught up with him at the course, and with the phone owners not wanting to press charges, and Bill offering to pay for the damage, the case was closed. I love a story with a happy ending.

There were times in the 90’s when the feud between Oasis and Blur got a bit lively. Blur singer Damon Albarn eventually retired from the business then tried making a comeback. I say this as what’s been a closely guarded secret is that Damon’s been making music in Mali in West Africa, and believe it not he is now a local ´King´ there. Really! Talking on Radio 4 about a schoolroom being named after him Albarn said ‘I’m not used to this sort of thing, but it’s fantastic, as it’s a school dedicated to music and dance, that’s where my heart is.” Brillo!

The protagonist in the story is from Champaign, Illinois, something that fits ever so well. His name is Christopher Brian Bridges, but in 1999 he changed his name to Ludicris and released his first album ´Incognegro. The boy made mega bucks in the business and last week to celebrate this fact the 38 year old secretly rented out a cinema and invited his whole family to watch a movie with him. He posted an image on Instagram of an almost empty cinema and wrote “Sometimes you have to rent the entire movie theatre for your family and babies to yell and disrupt the movie in peace!” Dude-icris!

´Are you Being Served´ was broadcast on the BBC from ´72 - ´85, and now there´s talk of a one-off special that will be set in 1988, picking up where the original series left off. The show will be written by Derren Litten of Benidorm and The Catherine Tate Show fame, and he joyfully said “Writing a new episode of Are You Being Served has been the most fun I have ever had as a professional writer, we have an amazing cast, a brilliant producer and a great director!” Filming begins next month in front of a studio audience at Media City, Salford, before airing on BBC One later in the year. Excellent!

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

Expressions with “Tener” Something we find out at the beginning of our language lessons is that English and Spanish often have very different ways of saying the same thing. This sounds like an obvious statement, but some people take longer than others to realize it. In other words, we have to let go of the need for word for word translation, and just understand that “that is how the Spanish say it”, so that’s what I have to learn. A good example of this difference is the way the Spanish talk about “having” something when we say “being” something. For example, let’s start with age. We say “I am 21 years old” (yeah, right) or “he is 60 years old”. In Spanish this is “Tengo 21 años” (literally, I have 21 years) and “tiene 60 años” (he has 60 years). Naturally the tense can change any way we want, for example: “El año que viene tendré 22 años” (Next year I will be 22). Something you may not have considered is what happens when we are talking about babies who are months, weeks or even days old. Well, we replace the word “años” for other time periods like this: “¿Cuántos meses tiene tu nieto?” “Solo tiene 6 semanas”. We might ask someone with

a very young baby “¿Cuánto tiempo tiene?” (Literally: “How much time has he/she got?”) which really doesn’t sound right in English at all. Some other expressions of this sort are fairly well known, for example “to be hungry” is “tener hambre” (to have hunger). On occasions we may hear, possibly just before lunch, “¡Qué hambre tengo!” (literally: What hunger I have!) The same thing applies to being thirsty; we have to say that we “have thirst”. For example “Cuándo llegaron, todos tenían mucha sed” meaning “When they arrived they were all very thirsty”. Similarly in Spanish we “have cold (or coldness)” and “have heat” when we experience different temperatures. This leads to is one of those classic mistakes that non-Spaniards make from time to time. “Tengo calor” means “I am hot” (i.e. the weather is hot and I am feeling the consequences). If you translate literally from English and say “Estoy caliente” you are saying “I am feeling randy” or as the Americans would say “horny”. Apart from the obvious implications of saying this to the wrong person at the wrong moment, my dictionary also informs me that this is a “vulgar” expression – so you have been warned

on two counts. You probably know the word “entiendo” (I understand), but if you understand something really well, or are convinced about something, you can also say “lo tengo claro” (literally “I have it clear” or perhaps “it is clear to me”). For example, someone might have just given you some complicated instructions and then checked that you know what to do. You can say “Si, lo tengo claro” (Yes, it’s all clear) or perhaps “No lo tengo claro de todo” (it is not absolutely clear to me). That’s a useful one when you want to disguise the fact that you haven’t understood a thing! And lastly, another expression which really doesn’t have a good equivalent in English: “tener ganas”. It means to have the “desire” for something. Our nearest equivalent is to “feel like” something. This is often used in the negative “No tengo ganas” (I don’t feel like it). Whatever it is, is entirely open to your imagination. “Vamos a dar un paseo” “No, no tengo ganas” is the sort of thing I mean, or if you are thinking of following up the “estoy caliente” theme, you can try “tengo ganas de ti”. How much does it cost to build a house in Spain? (Part I)

I have been asked this question pretty often and apart from answering (discourteously, I must say) with another question such as how long is a piece of string?

This week we will try to provide a reasonable accurate answer to this question by analysing the cost of construction of a typical house. The reason I decided to write this week’s article on this subject is because it has come to my attention the report published by the world wide consultancy EC Harris. According to them, to construct a building from design stage to the finished building, including site acquisition, materials and labour, is in Spain 40% cheaper than in most EC countries, as recently released by the property consultancy EC Harris. The study, conducted on a total of 29 countries and on five continents, shows that the price of construction in Spain is 18% cheaper than in France, 29% cheaper than in Holland and Italy and up to 71% below the average price of Ireland, surprise surprice.. For these experts, these data support the fact that higher housing prices are due to rising land prices and not to the increase of the remaining construction costs. This report also reveals that only the countries of Eastern Europe presents construction

costs lower than in Spain which. For the rest of the world, Indonesia, Philippines and the United Arab Emirates are the countries with the lowest construction costs. In the other extreme we find Japan, Australia and the United States and particularly Denmark, where to build a house is more than twice as expensive as in Spain. Economic growth in Western Europe has been slow and the Eurozone is expected to grow by 1.9% this year with a further 1.7% in 2012. The slow recovery from recession has hit the construction sector and construction price movements have generally been restrained. Construction prices in France, Germany and Italy have remained virtually unchanged over the past year and remain 13%, 7% and 1% respectively above the level of pricing in the UK. In Eastern Europe, there are more signs of recovery with growth in the new EU member countries expected to be 3.0% this year followed by a further 3.6% increase in 2012 while the economies of both Poland and Russia are expected to grow by 4 and 4.5% this year and next. Construction price in Russia rose by 9% over the past year, according to the EC Harris figures, while prices in Poland are approx 30% cheaper than the UK and fell by around 5% over the year. The fall in prices in Poland comes despite the ongoing

preparation for the Euro 2012 Football Championship and substantial investment of EU structural funds in major infrastructure works. Once we have seen how world construction market prices are fluctuating around the world perhaps we can take a look at a break down in costs related to building a house in Spain. Normally there are a number of factors that govern local prices and these factors are: Type of construction. Is it an individual house, an apartment? etc. General Market situation. Is it a buoyant, market in recession? etc. (Any doubts?) Access to site. Is it complicated, difficult, easy? Site topography. Is it on an abrupt slope, on a horizontal plane? Exact location of the site. There are price variations even within an Autonomous Community or even a province. House shape. If we take a single storey house with a floor area of 100m2 and the floor plan is 10m by 10m, the total length of façade is 40m. The same area of 100m2 on a building with a façade of 5m by 20m, the area still 100m2 but the length of façades is 50m, we have 10m more of façade for the same building area. Total amount of garden left over after building our house. Normally we have to fence it off, do same planting or hard landscaping etc. Number and size of bathrooms. The bath-

rooms together with the kitchens are normally the most expensive rooms in the house. Finishes. Obviously the quality of the finishes will have an impact on the final cost of the house. The selection of the type of foundations, if concrete pads, deep trench, etc. What type of soil we will have to do the excavation? It isn’t the same to excavate on rock than to excavate on soft sand. Type of structure. Is it reinforced concrete frame, load bearing walls, timber frame? Etc. Installation services. We will have air conditioning, central heating, solar thermal panels? Type of façade construction. Is it a cavity brick wall with thermal insulation, do our windows have double glazing? Type of external walls. Are our external windows and doors made of aluminium or are they timber joinery? Type of roof. Are our roofs double pitched, with tiles or is it a flat roof with access to a solarium? Finishes. Are our floors and walls covered with tiles or we have an expensive marble? With these elements decided on, we are able to provide an estimate of the total cost of construction and this cost should be pretty accurately within the standard local market price and that is what we will show on next week article.

Hake Fishcakes I remember fishcakes from my schooldays when they comprised 90 percent potato and 10 percent fish – if you were lucky. In recent years the posh fishcake has begun to appear on the menus of many a smart restaurant. I used hake in this version, but almost any flaky fish will do – fresh or frozen. The inclusion of a few extra ingredients gives the dish a spicy edge that really comes through in the taste. Try serving with a mixed salad. 250g hake fillets. 250ml fish stock (a cube will do) 650g potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks 2-3 spring onions, thinly sliced (or half a leek) ½ a small red chilli, de-seeded and finely sliced. 2 tbls olive oil. A handful of fresh parsley, roughly chopped. The grated rind and juice of a lemon. 1. Heat the stock in a large frying pan, then reduce to a simmer and poach the fish until just cooked (4-5 minutes). Set aside and allow to cool. 2. In a large pan, boil the potatoes in salted water until just cooked (10-12 minutes). 3. Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a small pan, add the spring onions and chilli and cook gently for 5 minutes. Allow to cool. 4. Strain the potatoes and mash them in the pan. Don’t worry if there are a few lumps. Stir in the olive oil, spring onions and chilli together with the parsley, lemon rind and juice. 5. Remove any skin from the fish and break it into small chunks. Fold the fish pieces into the mashed potato taking care not to break them up. 6. Form the mixture into 4 round patties and set aside until ready to cook. (The easiest way is to use a little flour on your hands or to press the mixture into a round pastry cutter). Fry the

fishcakes in a little oil over moderate heat for 7-8 minutes on each side until evenly brown. Serve immediately. Serves 2. Preparation time: 10 minutes

EU Licences under spotlight again by Caroline Tyszka THE N332 traffic group, run by the police to inform the public, has issued a reminder to anyone who has not yet exchanged their licence for a Spanish one. The following information is as supplied from the N332 Facebook organisation. It was over a year ago that foreign resident drivers were first warned of the need to change their driving licences if they did not fall into the required criteria as set out in the countless publications detailing this. The European Union is responsible for creating a harmonised licence model with the new rules coming into force last year. However, on account of the number of foreign drivers living in Spain, the DGT issued an amnesty in March, allowing those drivers who would be liable to a fine until 1st January 2016 to sort out their documentation. There were two such instances which required action. Firstly, if your licence has an indefinite expiry date, or more than 15 years validity, and you were legally resident in Spain before January 19, 2013, you should have already renewed your driving licence. If not, you must do so immediately. If you only became resident after January 19, 2013, you had 2 years from your date of residency to renew. That date has also expired. Secondly, if your license has expired, or is due to expire, you must renew it in your country of residence. In other words, if you are resident in Spain, your current license, once it expires, must be renewed in Spain. Despite these explanatory cases, there was still a lot of erroneous advice being spread through some outlets, including incorrect reports that you do not have to change your licence as we are all in Europe, suggestions that the whole process was illegal, and even some people adamant that the Guardia Civil would not fine drivers. All these suggestions are wrong. This week, in the Torrevieja area, one such foreign driver has been issued with a fine, as the licence, which fell into the first category of having an open expiry date, had not been changed. This licence is no longer valid and the amnesty expired in January. Remember, if your licence has an indefinite expiry date, or more than 15 years validity, your licence must be changed. If, or when, any licence expires, it must be renewed in your country of residence. Your driving licence must be issued in the country where you reside, so if you are a resident in Spain, you must exchange your licence. You don´t have a choice. It is not something that can be ignored, as you will be fined if you are caught. In fact though, having a Spanish issued licence also makes life on the road much easier, as your Spanish licence is linked to your NIE, and so, in the event of you being stopped by the police, your details can be checked and confirmed instantly. Plus, in the event of you being fined for a traffic offence, you do not have to pay on the spot if you have a Spanish licence, and can benefit from a reduced fine for prompt payment. FRIDAY SAW Wales play host to France. A George North try, soon after half-time, proved decisive, as Wales ended France’s unbeaten start to the 2016 RBS 6 Nations, with a 19-10 victory at Principality Stadium. Wales remain unbeaten, and Coach Warren Gatland’s side have now beaten France five times in a row - their best run since the 1950s. Saturday was the turn of Italy to take on Scotland, and England to play Ireland. The Italy v Scotland game was billed as ‘The battle for the wooden spoon’. However, it was action packed from start to finish, with some great running rugby by two well matched teams. Scotland needed to do some incredible defending to stem the relentless attack from a well worked Italian team. Final score 20-36 No country has won the RBS 6 Nations three times in a row and Ireland’s hopes of achieving the historic feat rested on the game with England this weekend. The first half should have seen a much bigger margin in England’s favor, but, to be fair, the 6-3 score reflected the continuous handling errors by an otherwise on form England team. England came out in the second half like a different team. With less handling errors, and 2 tries, the best team definitely won. This leaves defending champions, Ireland, without a win after 3 games, and unable to achieve the hat trick. The next games are in 2 weeks, on the 12th and 13th March.
