World Cup trophy in Torrevieja this weekend
PERHAPS A once in a lifetime opportunity for all football fans, the FIFA World Cup trophy that was magnificently won by the Spanish football team in 2010 in the final against third-time finalists the Netherlands, will be on display in Torrevieja this Saturday for all to come and visit. The coveted trophy will be on show from 10am until 9pm continuously at the Municipal Theatre of Torrevieja, in the Plaza Miguel Hernández in the town’s centre. All are welcome to visit and even have their photograph taken next to the prestigious cup. The mayor of Torrevieja, Pedro Hernández Mateo, has thanked the Spanish Royal Federation of Football for this tremendous gesture, which will allow residents and people from nearby municipalities to see, touch, and be photographed next to the country’s pride and joy.
THOUSANDS OF people have taken to the streets across Spain to protest against the ongoing economic crisis and to call for a boycott of the mainstream parties at Sunday’s elections. Recruited over the Internet – on sites such as Spanish Revolution and Real Democracy – many are young and unemployed and from a group tagged by the International Monetary Fund as the country’s potential ‘lost generation’. Protests began in Madrid where demonstrators defied a ban to gather and camp out in Puerta del Sol – the plaza being renamed ‘Solution Square’ and covered in banners – and ignored hundreds of riot police. And despite being dispersed by police earlier this week, the crowds have continued to return each day calling for electoral reform and an end to corruption within the corridors of power. Their stand has sparked similar action across Spanish cities such as Barcelona, Valencia, Zaragoza, Palma de Majorca – and even outside the Spanish Embassy in London’s Belgrave Square. Protesters have pledged to stay in Madrid until Spain goes to the polls on Sunday and it is understood marches are planned across the country on Saturday, normally
seen as a day of reflection before polling day. The ban on the Madrid rally – echoed by authorities across Spain – was made because it could adversely affect the final days of campaigning and the freedom of citizens with a right to vote. PEACE However, a spokesman for the organisers of the protest in the capital promised “everything will be peaceful” – saying if police attempted to remove the crowds “we will sit down: if we are removed we will come back.” Spain’s demonstrations mark a significant change in public attitudes to ‘La Crisis’. Until this week there have been few demonstrations against the European Union’s highest rate of unemployment, its stagnant economy or the government spending cuts. One Madrid protester explained: “We want politicians who are concerned about are lives, not their own political and economic interests.” Another added: “We’re not afraid. We’ve been saying for days that we are not going away.” And a third complained: “We are tired of the unemployment, the corruption of politicians. It is always the same thing. I have no job and I don’t see how I can find one anytime soon. Continued on page 3

“The politicians have to know how we feel and we are determined we will not be forgotten.” IMAGINATION The protests have caught the imagination of young Spaniards calling on people not to vote for the ruling Socialists or the centre-right Partido Popular in the 8,116 town hall and 13 regional ballots on Sunday. Numbers of jobless in Spain hit 21.19% in the first quarter of 2011 but the plight of the young is even more desperate – unemployment hit 44.6% amongst under-25s in February. It was reported Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and his PSOE party has been “alarmed” by the situation – fearing many of the demonstrators were disaffected socialist voters who would simply abandon the socialists on election day. The leadership was already fearful of a backlash at austerity measures aimed at avoiding a monetary meltdown that could trigger the fourth bailout in the Eurozone – and the hangover from the construction industry boom years. Partido Popular leader Mariano Rajoy – who believes the PP will make substantial advances at its rival’s expense – said he could understand the motives behind the protests. He described the rate of youth unemployment as “terrible” and said it was completely unacceptable in a Western democracy like Spain.

“They can run Spain’s oldest but cannot hide political candidate forever…” by Jan Gamm
JOSEFINA VILLAVERDE is the Socialist Party candidate for Cuntis in Galicia. In her campaign for election she vigorously canvasses the streets on the PSOE ticket with fellow contenders, like any other political hopeful for the 22nd May elections; except Josefina is 101 years old! And Josefina is certainly the only candidate in the running to have voted in Spain’s first ever election open to women, in 1933! Asked about her political preferences, Josefina is a fan of Defence Minister Carme Chacon, admiring her rise to power as a woman: “Women for power!” She also says it is a pity Zapatero is leaving as he is so handsome. Josefina Villaverde has been widowed since 1973 and pursues politics with a passion; a socialist through and through, she is fiercely loyal to the PSOE: “You should vote not for your friends but for your principles,” she said.

Pirates of the Caribbean premieres this week DISNEY’S LATEST blockbuster, fourth in the Pirates of the Caribbean series, director Rob Marshall’s ‘On Stranger Tides’ hits cinemas this week following its Cannes premiere, with an added attraction for Spanish viewers – its new leading lady Penelope Cruz in her role as Jack Sparrow’s (Johnny Depp) love interest. Ms Cruz, in Madrid this week, appeared at several press calls surrounding the premiere.
A MAN wanted on suspicion of being the drug baron behind a cocaine empire worth £80 million has been arrested in Spain after an extensive international hunt. Jamie Dempsey, 33, from Essex, was wanted by the Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca) for allegedly conspiring to supply 299 kilos of cocaine in spring 2009 and was identified in Marbella following the release of images of 10 criminals hiding out on the ‘Costa del Crime’. Dave Cording of Crimestoppers, said: “This is another great result, with 50% of the most recent batch of wanted individuals

captured. No matter where these wanted individuals run to, law enforcement will find them. They can run, but can’t hide forever.” Dempsey was arrested as part of ‘Operation Captura’, a multi-agency campaign that identifies wanted individuals on the run in Spain.
Orihuela official starts sentence for embezzlement
ON WEDNESDAY national police in Orihuela arrested Fenoll Espinosa Juan de Dios, a council official and brother of the former City Controller, to commence his prison sentence of four and a half years handed down in July 2009 on charges of misappropriating 66,500€ of public funds.

As well as the green areas being cleared and spruced up, the Orihuela Town Hall has also installed a new infant park and a fitness park designed for elderly residents of the area, to keep fit and healthy. Earlier this week, members from the German Speakers Association who live near to Calle Rocio in La Zenia, tested out the new equipment and thoroughly enjoyed their workout in the spring sunshine. The equipment is designed to work on resistance and will benefit all major parts of the body, with specific emphasis on legs and arms.

By Patricia Thompson NO ONE knows who did it or how, but an undetermined number of leaflets against what the Partido Popular has called the ‘tripartite’ (or the three main opposition groups to you and me) have appeared in the mailboxes of some homes and in the hands of many citizens. Thus, the election has gone from campaign rallies, which are taking place in all parts of the Orihuela municipality, to ‘war in print’.
MERCILESS The first poisoned dart was aimed at the Mayoral Candidate for the coalition of CLR and the coastal political party, CLARO, Pedro Mancebo. He is accused of: “an alliance with a party that advocates independence for the coast from the city.” Defined as “determined and merciless,” the leaflets state that Mancebo could be the cause of Orihuela city´s residents
saying: “good-bye to our beaches forever.”
DENIAL The second leaflet is dedicated to the Socialist Mayoral Candidate, Antonio Moreno, whom they call, “A representative of Zapatero,” and the leaflet blames the PSOE party for the fact that there are more than five million people unemployed in the country. The final leaflet was aimed at the Los Verdes party and claimed that they would put an end to Semana Santa celebrations and other traditional fiestas. It states: “Can you imagine an Orihuela led by them? PSOE, CLR-CLARO and the Greens would have to form a coalition in order to govern Orihuela, since they will not get enough votes to win an absolute majority.” The Partido Popular of Orihuela vehemently deny any involvement in the production and distribution of these leaflets. But one thing is for certain: in Orihuela at least, the gloves are off!

EU countries support review of Schengen Treaty by Jan Gamm FRANCE AND Italy’s proposals to reintroduce border controls in Europe in a bid to stem the flow of illegal immigrants from Africa were met with strong objection from the majority of the EU member countries. At an EU semester in Brussels on Thursday most member states agreed that the Schengen Treaty (the system that allows open borders to member countries of the European Union) should be updated. However, it was also made clear that ‘free circulation of travellers’ was not to be compromised in the review process. 18 member states held the opinion that the Schengen agreement allowed too much interpretation of the regulations, while Spain, Belgium and Malta felt that although the framework of the Melchior treaty was sound, there was room for change. Price and demand for fresh fish is halved in Torrevieja

By Julie Day ONE OF the sectors still suffering acutely from the effects of the economic crisis in Torrevieja is that related to fishing. This season double the amount of fish has been caught in comparison to last year, yet the price has diminished by half. According to figures from the Association of Fishermen from Torrevieja, this time last year fishermen caught 686,538 kilos of fish, which sold for 561,410€. This season 1,395,000 kilos of fish have been caught, whilst the global selling price has decreased to a mere 746,351€. Local fishermen make most of their money from the sale of sardines, found close to the shore and abundant in
Torrevieja’s waters, yet the price of this fish has decreased by 55%. Due to the economic crisis the demand for fresh fish is considerably less and people are instead buying frozen fish, precooked fish or cheap cuts of meat that can be made into meals that last longer. Added to the increasing price of fuel costs, the adjustments that wholesalers have made to their prices and the fact that many people cook less and spend less time in the kitchen, until the economy picks up and things start to change for the better it seems that the fishermen in Torrevieja and in other areas will have to ride out the storm for a good while longer.

by Julie Day RESIDENTS OF Los Balcones are to have a large green zone measuring 18,000m2 in their urbanisation, which is one of the first to be created as part of the Plan Verde, according to the mayor of Torrevieja and councillor for Parks and Gardens and the Environment. The project has just gone out to tender and has an estimated budget of 420,000€ and a time frame of 3 months to complete the project, once the go ahead has been given. This spacious outdoor green area will be equipped with Mexican Fan Palms, indigenous plants, grassy terraces, benches, bins, new lighting, play areas for children plus a sport zone for adults.
By Julie Day FOLLOWING ON from the Europe Day celebrations last Monday, hundreds of Norwegians from Torrevieja and surrounding areas gathered in the town’s Park of Nations on Tuesday to celebrate Norway Day on 17th May. The morning consisted of typical Norwegian activities and dancing, as well as sampling
plenty of homemade traditional Norwegian snacks and food. Present at the event were Eduardo Dolón, first candidate for Mayor and councillor for Fiestas and Culture, together with Joaquín Albaladejo, councillor for Hacienda and Patrimony and Eduardo Gil, councillor for Parks and Gardens.
How and where to vote in Torrevieja VOTING IN both the municipal and autonomous community elections takes place on Sunday 22nd May. Non-Spanish residents that are registered on the municipal census (Padron) and the electoral role are entitled to vote ONLY in the municipal elections, using the WHITE coloured voting slips and the WHITE envelope. PLEASE DO NOT mark the voting paper with a cross or with any other mark as this will result in your vote becoming VOID. When you attend the polling station you should take with you a current, recognised form of identity which contains a photograph (passport, ID card, driver’s licence). The POLLING STATION where you place your vote is, most likely, the nearest local school to your home. For example, those residents of Urbanisations San Luis, La Siesta and El Chaparral, will vote at the ‘Las Culturas’ primary school situated in the Torreta III; residents of Urbanisation Los Balcones at the ‘Romualdo Ballester’ primary school, etc...

Construction of new market ground is imminent The current location of the town’s weekly market causes accessibility and parking problems for visitors
by Julie Day THE CONSTRUCTION of the new weekly market and outdoor concert area in Torrevieja is about to begin and will be completed within a period of eight months. The new market ground will be located near to the Antonio Soria Park, next to the Aquapolis water park and will cover an area of 60,000m². This zone is much better equipped to cope with the thousands of visitors that frequent the Friday market, with space to hold 50,000 people at a time plus a large parking area for cars. At present, the current location of the town’s weekly market causes accessibility and parking problems for visitors, not to mention problems of noise, rubbish and traffic for residents that live and work close by. As well as housing the weekly market,
it is planned that the area will be used for large concerts and outdoor events. In addition to a large parking space, other facilities planned for this area include two service buildings, one with a cafeteria; two offices; toilets; a storeroom and a police unit. Gardens with plenty of trees will be built around the market area, which can be used to rest and relax, as well as block out the noise of the nearby traffic. This area will be accessible to all with numerous paths for pedestrians and ramps for wheelchair users. The PP has made a controversial U-turn and changed its original plans, recently announcing that the ‘hippie’ market and the fairground will now remain in their current location and will not move to the new market ground located outside of the town centre, as announced some time ago.

People performing manageable repairs are reminded to retain invoices for future reference. A great deal of support for the Lorca victims is already in hand from charitable organisations such as The Lions and PALS that launched early fund raising incentives to provide emergency relief. And in line with an effort to ‘normalise’ life in the town, local authorities are encouraged to continue with voting plans on Sunday 22nd May.

British teenager drowns A BRITISH teenager drowned in the treacherous waters off the Huelva coast on Sunday evening after going to the rescue of his brother. Emergency services were called to the Playa de la Bota to search for the 18-year-old swimmer but despite deploying two helicopters and beach patrol units they were unable to find him. Last summer a 16-year-old died in the same location, notorious for its strong currents.

THREE HUNDRED residents in the village of Valle del Sol Mutxamel are to have clean water after a 25 year wait. The first to receive the supply on Monday was Otilia Fernandez, who was able to shower in clean water, at home, for the first time in eighteen years since she and her husband, a Swiss national, moved to the area and found to their horror that the water was unsafe. “It seems incredible that in an industrialised country like Spain such things can happen,” she said. Georgie sets her sights high by Julie Day WITH AN abundance of charity projects already completed, actress, model and local celebrity Georgie May is busy with a whole host of new activities. She is currently in the process of producing her own calendar for 2012, where proceeds will be donated to and divided between the Easy Care Horse Rescue Centre and Paul Cunningham Nurses. Later on this year, Georgie will climb Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain at almost 6,000m at its highest peak, also for charity. The quality service, which has been adapted to the needs of those travelling by air, will run 365 days a year with eight journeys to the airport, starting at 7am and running every two hours until 9pm, and eight journeys back to Torrevieja, with the first bus leaving El Altet at 8am and running every two hours until 10pm. This is fantastic news for the residents of Torrevieja, particularly the thousands of Europeans that regularly travel back to their country of origin for short breaks, as well as for the thousands of holidaymakers that flock to Torrevieja each year. Regular flyers will save hundreds of euros in taxi fares and will benefit economically from this new bus service. The bus is set to follow an interior route of approximately 65km along the CV-905 and the A-7 motorway, which avoids the N-332 coastal road, which is prone to congestion and slower driving speeds.

WAY BACK in the mists of time when I was an RTN reporter I used to particularly enjoy covering events that were held at the Casa de Cultura in Alfaz del Pi. Regular readers will know how I used to blather on about the place incessantly. But I have to say, I found it a haven of calm and there was nothing nicer than sipping a cafe con leche in the bar before strolling around the gallery to view the works of art. There was always something going on to enjoy. In July the Alfaz Film Festival was held there (hopefully it still is) and in that same auditorium I’ve seen classical music, jazz, a swing band (featuring Chic Gammage, of course), rock and a punk band. Variety was always present in heaps. And the town council was always active in encouraging artists of differing disciplines; so in the space of a month you might see photographers, sculptors and artists displaying their various wares. The exhibitions were always well presented; and it was pleasurable to spend a happy hour wandering around. But when I say pleasure it goes beyond that because I used to experience a sense of well-being. Was it the place or was it the art being viewed? Who knows, perhaps a bit of both. But I was interested to learn recently that a series of experiments, held in London, has shown the actual affect on (or is that in) our brains when we view art. And the bof-
fins making the study say that it is more than just good for your health; they think it could have a big impact on the nation’s happiness. The series of pioneering brain-mapping experiments, lead by Semir Zeki (Professor of Neurobiology and Neuroaesthetics at University College London), has revealed that viewing art can give just as much pleasure as... well, as being in love. Prof Zeki has concluded that viewing art triggers a surge of the feel-good neurotransmitter dopamine into the orbito-frontal cortex of the brain. Ouch! A ‘surge’ into me ‘orbito-frontal cortex’ sounds painful. But hang on folks, it’s a good thing because the Prof says it results in feelings of intense pleasure. So clearly, it was an orbito-frontal surge that I used to get in the Casa de Cultura or when I was listening to Chic Gammage playing his drums. Prof Zeki said: “There have been very significant new advances in our understanding of what happens in our brains when we look at works of art.” Subjects were shown images of art that including works by Botticelli, Constable, Turner and Cézanne and their brain activity was mapped. Mind you, those subjects were inside an MRI scanner and I don’t know about you dear reader, but I’d need a whole heap of art to keep me calm stuck inside one of those. Anyway, the Prof added: “We found that when we

Wanted: a home for Sara – Princess of the Pound by Jan Gamm TWO MONTHS ago, celebrated poetess Monica Ros Beneyto died in hospital in Valencia, aged 84, with her affairs in order and bequeathing her important library of literary works to the local council but neglecting to make provision for her constant companion - her small, devoted and elderly dog of no particular breed, Sara. Sara was promptly taken up by the local authorities and moved to a dog pound. Overnight, Sara’s life changed completely and from luxurious surroundings where she was treated like a princess by her devoted owner, 12-year-old Sara, on medication for a heart murmur, was thrust into a shelter for abandoned animals with scores of other dogs. Terrified, she did not eat for four days until a resourceful kennel carer Julia, thought of cooking her food.
British woman found dead in her home from smoke inhalation
By Julie Day AN 88-YEAR OLD British woman died inside her home due to smoke inhalation caused by a fire started from a cigarette. The lady, who lived alone on the 5th floor of an apartment block on the Viñamar Urbanisation in Torrevieja, died after inhaling smoke and gases produced from a fire started by a cigarette that was not properly extinguished. Neighbours alerted the Local Police at 1.45pm after noticing smoke coming from under the door where the British lady lived. When police and members of the fire brigade managed to enter, the fire had extinguished itself yet the apartment was thick with smoke. After ventilating the rooms, the British woman, wheelchair-bound for the last year, was found dead on top of her bed. Torrevieja has a high incidence of elderly people that die alone in their home, either due to natural causes or through domestic accidents. In 2008, there were 30 cases of people found dead inside their home and 29 in 2009. Almost all were elderly and foreign.

Slowly falling apart THE OLDEST parts of Rojales, the Cueves de Rodeo, are being neglected by the Department of Culture of Rojales Ayuntamiento and are slowly falling apart. There were once artists performing restorations in the caves but since the arrival of the councillor for culture, their support has stopped. I offered to renovate some of the caves free of charge and received the response that the cultural department did not know how to go about the restoration so after three years I gave up. English people that visited me in my privately owned cave were as upset as I was and so I was prompted to write about it. Why build houses for cultural activities and ignore authentic historical landmarks the tourists are not even aware of? Ida Lauren

Selling at giveaway prices MANY BRITISH ex-pats are more or less selling their properties at giveaway prices in a panic to get back to the UK. This has given the impression that the value of all properties on the Costa Blanca have fallen. I would advise them research prices, before they approach an estate agent. The apparent fall in prices are caused by some British property owners finding themselves in financial difficulties because of the low exchange rate, being unable to pay their mortgages or having lost their local jobs, having to either return their properties to the banks or sell their particular property quickly at a knockdown price in order to return to the UK. Some pensioners, relying only on the State pension, have also found themselves in the same predicament, mainly because of the rate of exchange. This is a joy to some unscrupulous estate agents who are quick to advise ANY seller that their asking price is too high. The estate agent may even appear on your doorstep with a fist-full of property advertisements showing you
that similar houses are much cheaper than yours. Don’t fall for this scam: this practice has now generated a belief that all properties are ‘going for a song’ on the Costa Blanca. Many other Europeans are taking advantage of the cheap properties on the market and some estate agents are doing very well, thank you. The Norwegians, Russians and other Europeans coming here to buy property have the money to pay higher prices for those properties they a now buying at knock-down prices I would advise property owners of good substantial properties not to fall prey to the present ‘reduced price scam’. Anyone joining the bandwagon of reduced or discount properties prices are helping to make the situation worse, in which they themselves become victims. Don’t give your home away: remember at present it’s only SOME British ex-pats who are in financial trouble and have to sell quickly, making a dash for their homeland: not other Europeans. G A Marques
Building and letting regulations HAVING CRITICISED Spain in the past for its endemic corruption, it is only right that I redress the balance regarding British residents here who show utter disrespect and disregard for building and letting regulations. I recently rented a ‘casita’ in the hills; an attractive one-bedroomed bungalow with an enclosed garden, surrounded by terraced hills and fields with a river running below the property – ideal for me and my large dog. The nearest neighbour was the landlord, a British self-professed builder living half a mile distant. Reluctant to issue a formal Contract of Letting, the landlord suggested a trial period. I accepted this but later he was still reluctant to put anything on paper. Eventually he signed a ‘Form of Agreement’ but I was advised by him that should I be asked, I “wasn’t actually residing in the premises” but was on vacation!
The ‘casita’ was reformed by the landlord from a garage to a onebedroomed bungalow for the purposes of letting! The electricity was inadequately supplied via cable from the main house; the supply cut in rainy weather. Water was supplied from a tank with no proper means of purification: I was billed by the landlord on a meter arrangement. The tank was replenished from a large portable electric pump, manhandled from the tank and dumped into an irrigation culvert from the river running below the house. I was asked to clean this culvert of debris. The stench of rotting vegetation and sludge I recovered from this culvert was overwhelming. Whilst doing this, I fell down the terraced hillside, further injuring an already sprained ankle; a subsequent visit to hospital revealed badly torn ligaments.
Unable to adequately care for my dog and rest my foot, I informed the Landlord that I was seeking more suitable accommodation: I could barely walk let alone drive. He became extremely angry: “A visit to the vet for a quick injection for your dog should solve the problem!” I received no other assistance whatever and of course, as the premises are totally illegal there is no form of Insurance cover. Fortunately I was not electrocuted or worse. Needless to say, I am no longer resident at this address and with great sorrow was eventually forced to re-home my dog: I am undergoing further treatment on my foot. I later received an extremely abusive and insulting hand-written letter from the Landlords wife, which I have retained pending possible future proceedings. Jim Ireland, Alicante

We have received a report of an Orihuela Costa resident being stopped whilst on the M50 at Madrid. A plain car signalled him to pull in with the occupant in plain clothes showing what appeared to be a police badge. On doing so they were robbed of a purse containing money. The car involved later turned out to be a hire car, probably stolen. Our advice is not to stop when signalled to do so by persons appearing to be Police. It is normal for the Police in Spain NOT to use plain cars to stop another vehicle; they call up a uniform car to do so. If possible, obtain the number of the car and contact 112. In the past we have been informed of plain ‘police’ cars operating on the roads near to Alicante airport trying to stop people who have just arrived. Similar incidents have been reported from time to time in the vicinity of Barcelona and robberies have taken place at service stations and rest areas. Try and park where there are people about. Efficient, courteous and concerned Thought your car was legal? Think again... LAST MONTH I had a minor traffic accident in Denia and the police were called. The police came quickly and were efficient, courteous and very concerned about my welfare, wanting to call an ambulance. However as I wasn’t hurt, only shaken, I declined the offer. The official business of filling in forms was done quickly and easily because I had all the necessary papers and identification. A FEW weeks ago I had my car repossessed by the Tesoria to cover unpaid debts of the previous owner. They came at 10.30pm, broke into our gated community and arrived on my doorstep with three policemen demanding I empty the car and hand over the keys and documents. It was incredibly distressing, not least because I had owned the car for two years, the documents
were transferred at Trafico in my name and I had been paying Suma, ITV etc all that time. In short, they knew it was legally my car. My solicitor thinks the government are so desperate to reclaim money owed that they will do so by fair means or foul. It seems innocent expats are easy pickings. Tina Coppen

KING JUAN Carlos was rewarded with shouts of “God save the King!” this week during his visit to Bern in Switzerland, prompted by a regal gesture. While taking part in a ceremony held at the Federal Plaza in Bern accompanied by Swiss President Micheline Calmy-Rey, his majesty was invited to review the troops. At the moment the King stepped forward to begin his inspection of a long line of soldiers, a torrential downpour began. Firmly refusing an umbrella, he gallantly opted for a soaking along with the soldiers and earned resounding applause from the assembled crowds. After the ceremony, a minute’s silence was observed for the victims of the Lorca earthquake. The King and Queen Sofia arrived in Switzerland last Thursday for a two-day state visit. Juan Carlos met the then Princess Sofia of Greece in Lausanne, while in exile. They married in Athens in 1962.

Compensation for poor decision of hospital staff COMPENSATION OF 120,000€ has been settled upon the parents of a baby that died at birth in fetal distress when hospital staff made the decision to allow the 40-year-old mother a high risk normal delivery instead of performing a Caesarean Section. Mapfre, insurers of the Fundación Jiménez Diaz Hospital in Madrid, agreed the settlement through arbitration.

Shock, horror? Not really! ANOTHER TERRIBLE week news-wise here in Spain: the decapitation in Tenerife, the earthquakes in Lorca, the dead baby found in a cupboard, another domestic violence arrest... and Spain didn’t secure the 2018 Ryder Cup. Shock, horror, outrage! Those are the natural thoughts and emotions when reading these stories, but hand on heart who felt like that? Now let me be clear - all of the above events were terrible, well maybe not the Ryder Cup decision to be fair, and have left many devastated, distraught and disturbed without question. Let us take that for read, as it isn’t the point that I am trying to make. Lorca is about 175km from where I live, I drive past it regularly and it is a lovely part of Spain. Friends in and around Mojacar, 120km from where I live, felt the earthquakes and were quick to share the experience via Facebook and Twitter within seconds of the event. We have friends in Lorca who were on the phone within hours, giving us an eye witness account, long be-
fore the mainstream news companies had picked up on the details: the town hall bell in the square, the crushed cars, the ongoing fear of more aftershocks… The thing is though it all felt so - well normal really! Tsunami one month, hurricane the next, tornado last year, earthquake this year, it all sort or morphs into one feeling of “…oh another disaster.” Take the decapitation in Tenerife: I was sat in a bar and a friend said to me, “Have you heard about the lady who had her had chopped off in the Supermarket ...” and I honestly thought he was going to tell me his latest current joke. When I heard the full story, about the attempts to purchase the knife, that the killer was wanted by police already, and that he had tried to kill someone only months before did I feel shocked? Was I surprised? No and No. Tragic and needless it certainly was, and it seems that it could have been prevented if the authorities had been able to do their job properly, but hand on heart was I shocked, did my world stop, did it surprise me that
such a horrific act could take place in ‘this day and age…’ Earlier this week police arrested a 38-yearold woman in Jaén after finding a newborn baby dead in a cupboard at her home. The baby was wrapped in a blanket with its umbilical cord wrapped around its neck. Again it is hard to imagine how someone could do this, or the torment that they must have been suffering to make them kill their own child. Again, tragic, terrible and devastating for all involved, but... did it take me surprise? When I read it did I feel a sense of disbelief? Again no and no, and I really am a compassionate person - honest! Again earlier in the week a 47-year-old man was arrested in Torre del Mar for allegedly assaulting his wife and threatening to kill her. She had been attacked and the husband had thrown the TV at her during the incident. Not surprisingly this was not the first violent incident and she had reported several previous incidents, the last being in March of this year. The really sad thing about this story? She
was the lucky one in this week’s column! How mad is that? And on the subject of madness, why are Spain bleating that they didn’t get awarded the 2018 Ryder Cup ‘in memory’ of Seve? Great man and a great golfer, but sport should never be about the individual. However emotive peoples’ feelings are now we are talking about a competition in 2018 and I for one think they were right not to award it to Spain, not least because Spain has hosted the Ryder Cup once (ironically when Seve was captain and won it) and I feel that they should share the venues across Europe as it is after all the European Ryder Cup Team. Philip Treacy designed no less than 36 hats for the great and good that graced the congregation at the royal wedding but none so striking (nor so ridiculed) as the horn-like structure Beatrice chose to wear. Comments drawing comparisons to reindeers, loo seats and Star Trek stun guns have followed Beatrice around for weeks, until finally the mad-cap princess decided to donate the hat for auction on eBay, to raise funds for UNICEF and the Children in Crisis Association, through a specially appointed fund, ‘The Little Bee Initiative’ at a staggering £15,000 starting price. At the time of going to press offers had surpassed £20,000 and are expected to escalate to £30,000 before the close of bidding this weekend.

by Jan Gamm ON SUNDAY, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, 62year-old managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and France’s former Finance Minister, was removed from the first class cabin of an Air France aircraft awaiting take-off at JFK airport in New York, bound for Paris. He was taken for questioning and later arrested on charges of sexual abuse, attempted rape and unlawful imprisonment of a hotel chambermaid in his hotel room at the Sofitel hotel on West 44th Street, Manhattan. The scandal could not have occurred at a worse time for the IMF, with Europe in the throes of the Euro crisis and on the heels of the IMF’s Deputy Managing Director’s decision to resign, announced on 12th May; 64year-old American John Lipsky was to leave office at the end of August. Strauss-Kahn had requested that Lipsky stay on in an ‘advisory role’ to ensure the ‘least disruption’. It was confirmed by the IMF on Wednesday that there is no immunity in place for Strauss-Kahn against such charges. Another sexual scandal broke in 2008 involving Strauss-Kahn, when he was confronted by the outraged husband of a subordinate
at the IMF, Hungarian economist Piroska Nagy, with whom Strauss-Kahn had a personal relationship. He avoided being sacked when it emerged the relationship was consensual and after apologies had been made for his ‘poor judgement’ to both the IMF and his wife, prominent TV journalist Anne Sinclair. ELECTION Strauss-Kahn is the Socialist party’s contender for the French 2012 presidential election - a position now severely compromised by his arrest. The New York Police Department is liaising with the Special Victims Unit of NYPD on the case. Meanwhile, Strauss-Kahn is held at Rikers Island correctional centre in New York, in a single cell and on suicide watch. Strauss-Kahn resigned from his position as Managing Director of the IMF Wednesday evening, a move endorsed by Spanish Financial Vice President Elena Salgado who believed his resignation would be in the interests of stability. His statement of resignation included a comment on his continuing deep affection for his wife along with a further protestation of his innocence of charges of assault.

EXCHANGE RATE RISK ON REPATRIATION The agreed sale price of a property is often based on the amount of pounds sterling that the seller hopes to receive, according to the exchange rate at that time. However, a Notary / completion date can take place some weeks or even months after the contract of sale has been signed. This means that sellers run the risk of the exchange rate moving against them and thus reducing the amount of pounds sterling that they receive. For example, with an exchange rate of 1.15, a sale value of 150,000€ will give you £130,435. Should this exchange rate rise to 1.18, a rise of just 3 cents, this would give a return of £127,118 – a loss of £3,317. Refurbishment, reformation, modification, extension, make-over whatever you want to call it, at the moment houses are being done up. Instead of trying to sell, many people are taking the alternative of extending or improving their property in some form. Resale
property has become more popular and those moving in often have ‘grand designs’ in one form or another. You’d be forgiven if you stray onto an older urbanisation for thinking that erecting an extension or refurbishing your house is easy to do. Upwards, sideways, forwards, backwards there are all kinds of types of extension. In some cases the original house is almost lost from view. But be warned! Probably the majority of these extensions are illegal. In Spain, if you modify your property you need to apply for a building licence from the town hall. If you don’t have one of these you can be issued with a demolition order. Okay – many people haven’t done this in the past but, as anyone knows who’s lived in Spain for a while, that’s no excuse or guarantee of impunity in the future. Those properties with older refurbishments of more
than four years old are not likely to be challenged now. However, they do need to change the property specification on their Title Deed before they sell. Those with more recent refurbishments or who are doing them now, however, are much more vulnerable. If you don’t have a licence you can be required to demolish the extension and return your property to its previous state with a fine for your trouble. Alternatively you might like to jump the gun and apply for a licence retrospectively, at least saving yourself the fine. So, whether you’re a DIY dynamo or not - don’t neglect the paperwork unless you want your ‘up-build’ to be undone sooner than you thought. Head of IMF European Department says Spain best example of economic reform THE HEAD of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) European Department, Antonio Borges, said this week in Frankfurt that Spain is “…the best example of a country going in

Turning trash into teddy bears is creative business SOMETIMES A great business idea is just waiting to happen! When a business idea is simple, sentimental and green it cannot help but be a winner. Such is the case for creative talent Alison Kilkenny from Cumbre del Sol, who was inspired by the idea of turning trash into treasured teddies that bring smiles and surprises to all ages.
“I’ve always loved teddy bears and I don’t think you’re ever too old to have one,” expresses Alison. “They give so much joy to so many people and for different reasons. I already have a teddy bear business called Kiddywinks Teddy Bear Parties (www.kiddywinksteddies.com) which is doing very well, and my recycled fabric bears seem to be a natural addition to that.” Sometimes a great business idea comes about while enjoying a leisurely conversation. According to Alison, she was in the midst of such a discussion with her friend Liz Yardley from Javea when she was told about a pen-friend in Canada who was making teddy bears by reusing garments. “I just thought this was such a fantastic idea,” states Alison. As soon as she got home she did some research and before long she found herself sewing up a teddy bear from a pair of brushed cotton pyjamas that, by coincidence, once belong to her friend. “When I presented Liz with the bear, she couldn’t believe it was her old pyjama bottoms recycled into
something she could now cuddle up to!” More and more businesses these days are banking on the traditions of the past. Recessions always bring back the handicraft trends. “My mum taught me to sew and cross stitch and I’ve always tended to cut the buttons off old clothes and take the zips out to re-use them on other projects,” explains Alison. “It’s nice to come across some buttons or bows which are absolutely perfect for the project in hand.” Now that Alison has a stock pile of unused fabric to create with, she has diversified her business model to include more possible revenue streams. “I also make personalised cushions and personalised party bunting,” she continues. “It’s so satisfying to see a brand new cushion emerge with a child’s name on it that I have made from an old pair of curtains or a bed throw and a long string of bunting to match. My Signature Bears are very special too. They are made from recycled cotton sheets in cream or pastel shades and they can be written on with waterproof ink.” Alison, like many entrepreneurs, believes that businesses need to think ‘green’ and offer products and services that will keep the planet green for future generations. When Alison is involved with her Kiddywinks Teddy Bear parties, she always takes time to educate the children at the party about the products they are using, such as the non toxic fabric pens.

WE WON a court case recently, with the Court Order stating that the respondent must pay us 35,600€. Our lawyer has informed us that we need to start an execution of this Court Order in order to get paid, but that it will be difficult to get any money, as we are pretty sure that the respondent has no assets or income, etc. So what we should do? Dear Reader, Thank you for your email: First of all we would like to comment that your lawyer, whoever he is, since he is dealing with your case directly should know all the relevant details, documents and situation, etc. In the circumstances he will naturally be able to provide you with the best possible advice; so our first opinion it is to listen to the advice of your lawyer. Unfortunately the situation you explain is a common scenario. So we always need to think twice before commencing a legal action if we cannot find any assets belonging to a respondent; or if we suspect that they have no income or resources of any kind, or
are unlikely to have any in the future. The investigation into the solvency of a future respondent is thus a really important part of any potential legal action. Conversely, it is also true that sometimes in the execution of a Court Order when we think that a respondent or debtor may have no assets, we could find that in fact he is receiving a salary, or a pension, or a regular benefit grant, meaning that we could have a nice surprise. Regarding the income(s) of the debtor, you must remember that legally you cannot place a charge on every single part of the income(s) that he may receive, as by law he must be allowed to keep a minimum of his salary, pension or regular benefit to be able to survive. One other possibility that can be considered it is to wait before executing the Court Order against the respondent, for example if you know or think that at the moment he has no assets but believe that maybe he might in the future. Article 518 of the Spanish Civil Jurisdiction Law (Ley de Enjuiciamiento Civil) sets out that the ‘execution action’ or ‘claim to enforce’ a Spanish Court Order, legal settlement, arbitration decision or resolution expires within 5 years from the time that the said Court Order, legal settlement, arbitration decision or resolution becomes definitive. Therefore if you think that the respondent may have some assets or income in the

future, you can wait for a maximum of five years to start the execution. At that time the situation of the respondent may have improved and he may have more money available with the general economic climate

WHY ARE people still buying property in Spain? I suppose the answer could be as long as a piece of string. However, I’m sure that whatever the answer is it still lies somewhere between investment and lifestyle choice. For some the reason for buying a property here was profit, pure and simple, and the bigger it was and the quicker it was made the better. Others take a more balance view, purchasing a property as a long term investment which they can enjoy during the holidays. There are people who buy property so that they can retire in a place where the only stress comes from trying to find something to be stressed about. And there are those who come to Spain to change the lives they live and want the security and flexibility that property ownership has over long term letting. Apart from the ‘making a quick buck’
approach the above reasons for buying a property here are still valid and worthwhile. So why is it that in so many cases reason is thrown out the window when some people buy a property in Spain? The quick and easy answer is the view. They see the sun, the blue sky and the stunning vista and after a few bottles of wine they’re signing up to their Spanish dream. Too many people’s Spanish dreams have turned into nightmares through no fault of their own. However, lot’s of people buy the wrong property because they think they have the right reasons. Here is a true story to illustrate my point. The grandparent’s retirement to their Spanish idyll lasted less than three years. They claimed that missing the grand children was a major factor in returning home. But their feeling of isolation was exasperated because they had bought a house in the middle of Spanish village where, would you believe it, no one spoke English; where he couldn’t get his English newspaper in the morning; where the nearest shop that
sold ‘proper’ food was in Shropshire and where their neighbours were asleep in the afternoon and up all night. On reflection, the grandparents were induced by an idyllic dream and intoxicated by the view that Spain is a quaint travelogue of white-washed hilltop villages, orange groves and bullfights with
an English commentary when it is in fact a lot more challenging, fascinating and enjoyable than that. The moral of the story is that if the property doesn’t fit the way you are going to live out here then it’s not the right property for you. The price might be right but are you right in the head to pay it?

MAY WEEKEND was a mix of fine weather and heavy rains, especially during the night of the 1st/2nd. Plants were bashed down, newly planted plants over-watered and low lying zones of gardens flooded. So watering may be out of your mind for a while but once the sunny weather arrives, Spanish soil soon dries up and within weeks one may have to start to water again, especially if you have taken steps to mulch around plants to retain the free rain water and prevent evaporation losses. Mulching is the process of covering the soil around plants that keep

the surface of the soil moist and prevent the formation of capillary tubes in dried out soil through which water can evaporate. The following are some of the things that we do and which are referred to in our books. 1. Mulch along rows of raspberry canes with a mix or with layers of comfrey leaves, compost from the compost heap, and grass cutting from a neighbour’s lawn that has not been treated with any chemical products. 2. Surround plants and shrubs with small weathered rocks on the rockery and with small rocks over breathable plastic sheeting in shrub/flower beds. 3. Place stone slabs or large rocks over the roots of climbing plants. 4. Lay stone chippings over breathable plastic membrane between trees. 5. Lay areas of stone chippings over solid plastic sheeting to move rain water from areas where it is not need to others where it can be absorbed around plants. 6. Lay solid stone paths around planted areas with plants along the path which can develop long roots that extend under the path to extract stored moisture. 7. As an alternative to small rocks a layer on fine volcanic ash chippings can be used on rockeries and to cover the compost in containers. 8. Tufa balls can also be used for containers in sheltered situations. In very windy places they can blow around when dry. 9. Plant plants close to create a ‘living mulch’ that allows no drying sunlight to reach the surface of the soil. In one area of the garden we have allowed a carpet of wild strawberries to develop as a mulch and a ‘warning’ from drying leaves that the soil is drying out in mid summer. 10. Leave leaves to rot under hedges and ground cover plants.

To create a mellow atmosphere in the bedroom, drape a lamp hanging from the ceiling in voile. 2. Clean up rusty tools with a Brillo pad dipped in turpentine. 3. An electric carving knife is the perfect tool for cutting through foam. Just make sure you practise on a few off-cuts first. 4. Store your steel wool pads in soapy water or aluminium foil to prevent them getting rusty. 5. If you need to rub down a window frame, use wire wool on the cross sections to prevent scratching the glass with sandpaper. 6. In the bathroom, use sheets of mosaic tiles that already have adhesive on the back, to create a stylish, modern and clean look with relatively little hassle.
7. Make a pelmet using a staple gun to attach fabric to a length of plywood. Fix to the wall with brackets so the material covers the curtain track. 8. Mark picture hooks by putting a cocktail stick in wallplugs before wallpapering so they protrude. 9. Stop wallplugs from turning by lubricating screw threads with tallow. 10. Use a surface primer on clean, dry tiles before painting. Seal emulsion with varnish. 11. Paint over radiators by sanding down the metal and brushing on eggshell or gloss paint. At this time of year, with radiators hardly being used, you could even make or buy a classy radiator cover, to conceal the metal. 12. If you make a mistake when painting, remove fresh paint with masking tape. 13. Paint narrow strips by dividing your paint roller with tightly tied string. 14. Buy mosquito netting and suspend from the ceiling to fall in a dramatic veil around beds. Not only does this look great, but at this time of year, when you`re sleeping with the windows open, it`s really practical too. No one likes getting bitten! 15. Remove rotted wood from windowsills and fill holes with car body filler. File and sand before repainting.

Updating current browser Can’t proceed further Terry via email asks: HI AUNTY, I hope you can help me once again. I have just had an email from Yahoo to say that they are upgrading their mail service and I must have Internet Explorer7 (IE7), Firefox3, Safari4 or Chrome5 to do this. Currently I have Microsoft XP. They add that if you do not have one of these browsers then you must first update to get their improved service and will soon be mandatory. My question is how do I go about updating my current browser? Aunty Says: Hi Terry. A ‘browser’ is simply the program that you use to ’browse’ the Internet. The four ones you have mentioned are the major players in the market and you can use any (or all) of them for free. Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (IE) is probably the most common, but only because it is bundled with Windows and we’re tricked / cajoled into using it. Firefox is written by Mozilla. org (and is my favorite) and is
closely followed by Google’s Chrome. I have all three of these and I use them for different reasons. I generally stick to Firefox, but I find Chrome is faster when using Google’s own applications such as Gmail & Picasa. I have kept IE purely because one of my online banking sites is very slow using Firefox but fine with IE8. All of these browser programs are constantly being updated and improved which is where the number comes in. Firefox4 is now available and IE9 has been around for a while. I haven’t forgotten Safari (which Apple favour so it must be good) but I don’t use it so I can’t comment. You can get the latest version of your choice of browser from the respective companies’ websites.
Brian from Quesada asks: Hi aunty, firstly let me thank you for the advice you gave me in last weeks issue (604) regarding the reinstallation of the currency converter, it worked perfectly. Hope you can help me with this one too. When using my Laptop with Vista I log onto flybe.com using Google to book a flight but the web page appears followed by a message ‘Class not registered’ and I can’t proceed any
further. Is there a way of correcting this problem on my Laptop? Aunty Says: Hi Brian. If this only happens when you try and access that particular website then this could well be a Java issue. The easiest thing to try is download and install the latest version of Java from www.sun.com or maybe try using Firefox as your browser and see what happens. Let me know how you get on.
Tommy via email asks: HI AUNTY - I have two problems I hope you can solve for me. When I try to download free AVG I only seem to get the 30 day free trial then I must subscribe to continue: what am I doing wrong? I want to download Skype on my daughter’s PC but again it downloads Skype which you must subscribe to? I Read your column each week and keep your page for reference in future should I need it. Aunty Says: Hello Tommy. When you download the free AVG2011 installer it is actually the same as the subscription version unless you select the ‘basic protection’ option during the install. If you go to www.enetcomputers.net there is a link on the homepage to the latest AVG2011. Once the install starts you will be prompted to choose between ‘basic protection’ and ‘full protection’ and it is here you may be going wrong. I also recommend choosing the ‘custom install’ and untick everything (except for the sidebar/gadget option) as this keeps AVG down to a more efficient minimum install. Skype is also free for PC-toPC communications and chargeable if you want to call normal landline phones. Go to www.skype.com and make sure you are not selecting the premium version.
Please explain these tarifs Anne via email asks: WELL I’M so confused! I have just opened a contract with Movistar for 23€ per month for 500MB which I started on 3rd May. Today I have received an email from them saying “Has consumido los 500MB de tu tarifa. El trafico de datos no tendra coste aditional pero se reducira la velocidad hasta el dia 18 del mes.” I understand what their saying but could I have used the 500Mb already? I thought this was for unlimited use. Can you explain this kind of tariff to me I am so scared of getting a massive bill at the end of the month on top of the €23 a month I already pay them. I have a dongle from them to use when I’m online: I am so worried. Aunty Says: Hello Anne. The tariff you have allows you to download 500Mb of data at full speed and when you exceed your 500Mb, although you won’t get charged any more, your speed drops considerably. It really depends on what you are doing over the internet to know whether 500Mb per month is adequate as some things will use that amount very quickly. The things to avoid are ‘streaming’ sites such as Youtube and any kind of online TV & radio. Internet based phone services such as Skype will eat up your allocated 500Mb, as will any chat programs that use webcams. There are of course all the Windows and antivirus/spyware updates that will kick in almost daily, but these can’t really be avoided. If you have a laptop it may be worth popping into a bar that offers free wifi once a week and manually update everything over a cup of coffee.

Investigates the case of Evil Alarm Clocks THIS WEEK the Inspector is wide awake with a quintessentially evil quartet of quarrelsome alarm clocks. Who takes any notice of an alarm clock? No, really. It´s that boring little device, whether it be clock/radio or mobile phone, that sits next to the bed ready to release you from the land of nod with some irritating row (anything recorded in the last 20 years) or fake siren sound. And then, after all that, only to have the ´snooze´ operated by the weaker-willed amongst us – just another five minutes… So what is the 21st Century solution to this age old dilemma? First up is the SnuzNLuz Wifi Donation Alarm Clock (top left). Rather than hurting your ears this little blighter hits you where it really hurts – your wallet. The loss of visual field often occurs gradually and slowly, and may be recognised by the sufferer only when at an advanced stage. This loss of vision can never be recovered, so prompt diagnosis is essential. Macular degeneration - In older people, the macula – the centre of the retina which is used for detailed vision – thins and occasionally bleeds. This can lead to distortion, or even loss, of central vision. The sufferer may also have trouble discerning colours. Peripheral vision remains unaffected, but central vision loss is serious, so early diagnosis and treatment is vital. Waltzer I have always loved fun fairs. Take me to a Theme Park and I have absolutely no fear whatsoever no matter how fast and furious the ride. The fastest rollercoasters are never too fast for me! I attribute the appreciation of all the fun of the fair to my Father. He took me to Coney Island when I was just a little boy, and we rode The Cyclone together. I remember holding onto my father for grim death, but after the car came to a halt I realised that it was fun, and wanted to go on again. I had lost any fear that I had. I progressed onto the Waltzer. Here the cars dipped and dived and twirled on their metal bases. Lights flashed and the attendants slapped the back of the revolving cars and helped to spin them faster and faster. Sirens hooted and I was lost in the motion of the waves with the aftershock of the ever spinning cars. To fuel my fun there was the aroma of hot dogs, screams from the Ghost Train and the promise of cotton candy and a coke float. It was a colourful world of toffee apples, fortune tellers and sad clowns. My father won me a cupie doll on the rifle range, and I picked a duck with a prize number on its belly, and kept that teddy for years. There was something rather dangerous about the rides, and yet I was safe in the arms of my Father and protected by him. Therefore danger became fun and I loved every minute of it. Plus I learned to breathe out on each ride, to shout, yell or scream as I needed to; and this was the secret to my enjoyment. Life is just like a funfair. Not just because you can scream if you want to when you want to, which can help, but because you can face the ups and downs of life and ride the worst ride only to leave it whole and safe. There is no doubt about it, life is a fast ride and we may have our fears and our doubts and reservations, but we

So, on the darkest day I recall my fun in the Magic Kingdom! I don’t care that I am the eldest rider on the Waltzer on Brighton Pier, and adore the Magnus Colossus at Terra Mitica, when I get the chance. Spirit has always kept me safe. Though I may have gritted my teeth and whitened my knuckles everything does come right in the end. The highs and lows of the roller coaster sometimes see you literally hanging on by the skin of your teeth. There are truly high highs and low lows, but you get by, sometimes we are feeling that we are on the way down and sometimes we are reassuringly very much on the upward curve. Your life will be a fast one, may not always be connected with all the fun of the fair, and it may have a tinge of fear as the sirens wail, and the toffee apple caramelises before our very eyes. But I guarantee that sheer fun and zest for life will see us hurtling around the fairground of our lives, defying the fear and waltzing safely through, right to the end amongst the inevitable chills and spills we encounter on the way.

Eric Burdon & The Animals at Jazz San Javier E
RIC BURDON & The Animals were part of the U.K. blues scene of the early 60’s and one of the most noteworthy bands of the British Invasion. They formed in 1962 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne with Burdon as the lead singer. The group’s inspiration and much of its early repertoire came from American electric blues and R&B. Eric Burdon’s gruff voice made him a natural blues singer, and while other blues-based bands of the British Invasion went pop (most notably The Rolling Stones), The Animals stayed the course and continued playing the blues, yet managing to blend a folk feel to their music. In fact, their breakthrough hit, was a scorching blues rendition the traditional folk song ‘House Of The Rising Sun’. With the release of that song in mid-1964, The Animals became the first British group after The Beatles to chart a Number One single in America. Other hits followed like ‘We Gotta Get Out Of This Place’, ‘Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood’, ‘It’s My Life’ and ‘Don’t Bring Me Down.’ A big influence that made The Animals’ sound unique at the time was Alan Price’s organ playing, which provided dramatic accents and a blues-jazz atmosphere. Price departed in 1966 due to the
conflicts between his fear of flying and the touring demands their hit status required. Alan Price called Burdon, “The best singer in a white band.” The late Brian Jones called him, “The best blues singer to ever come out of England.” After that other members trickled out and new ones trickled in. With the name modified to Eric Burdon & The Animals the band transitioned to America’s West Coast psychedelia scene, having been to the Monterey Pop Festival (and writing a hit song about it, ‘Monterey’). After breaking up The Animals at the end of the decade, Burdon entered the Seventies as frontman with a black funk group from the streets of Los Angeles known as War. As Eric Burdon and War, they recorded the hit single ‘Spill The Wine’ and two albums. After Burdon left, War continued successfully into the pre-rap funk era with such hits as ‘Low Rider’. In November 2008. Rolling Stone ranked Eric Burdon #57 on the list of the 100 Greatest Singers of all Time. In 2009 he put together a new band of seasoned musicians that could still deliver the ferocious attack of their 60’s sound. Crescendo’s new musical director is Sixto Manuel Herrero
SIXTO WAS born in Rafal near Orihuela and studied the saxophone, composition and conducted at the highest level at the Conservatories conservatoires in Alicante and Valencia with teachers such as José Mirete, Jaim Belda, Ramón Ramos and Manuel Galduf. He has recorded a CD of contemporary Spanish music with the Sax Ensemble saxophone quartet and a CD entitled ‘A las nueve, Lord Berri’ with the Ars Musicandum saxophone quartet. He soloed in recordings made by the Spanish National Radio with the City of Elche Chamber Orchestra, and played with the Region of Murcia Symphony Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra of Santiago de Compostela. He has taken part in the world saxophone congresses in Valencia, Montreal and Minnesota. Sixto was granted a special prize in the second edition
of the Fernando Rielo Competition for Religious Music in Rome for his work “Huéspedes de la Luz” (Guests of Light) for choir and orchestra, a special prize in the second edition of the International Composition Contest of Montreal for the string quartet entitled ‘Ignotalias’ (Unknown Things) recorded by the Molinari Quartet on the ATMA Classique label and won a prize at the Ensemblia Festival in Germany for his string quartet entitled ‘Quera’. He composed the original sound tracks for the films ‘Thirteen’ and ‘Concilia’ directed by Fernando Canet and holds a doctorate from the Universidad Politécnica of Valencia on the subject of musical creativity based on the study of the ‘Cantes Mineros’ Flamenco style. At present he is Head of the Composition department at the Higher Conservatory of Music in Murcia, in charge of the music school of Los Montesinos and of its band, a member of the ‘Ars Musicandum’ saxophone quartet and director of the ‘CIMMA’ contemporary music ensemble. He also gives an annual course on technique and interpretation for the saxophone together with the pianist Ramón López. Sixto will attend Chas Smith’s retirement concert at Torrevieja Christian Fellowship on May 25th where Chas will introduce Sixto as his successor. They will work together with the choir throughout June, at which time Sixto will take over as MD for the new season of rehearsals starting in September. By strange coincidence, Sixto’s surname ‘Herrero’ means ‘Smith’ in Spanish so Crescendo’s MD will still be Mr Smith!
Hara Karate Academy Spain’s first Black belt graduate Karateka KATIE STEWART aged 12 from Almoradi, was awarded her personal Shodan Monti Black Belt at the Clearview Sports Centre in Essex on 12th March. A large contingent from Hara Karate Spain joined her at the four-monthly grading; three hours of intense examination. Sensei Peter Mclaughlin, 6th Dan, presented the Katie with her well-earned and well-deserved Black Belt, commending her on 3.5 years of dedicated training. Also grading were Spain’s local members of HKA Simon Stewart (Katie’s father) and Mark Lisle, grading for their 1st Kyu Adult Brown Belts, Cameron Gask and Lisa Haugen who were grading for their 3rd Kyu Red Belts and Beverly Gask who was grading for her 4th Kyu Blue Belt. All local Karateka from Hara Karate Spain achieved their required grades. Sensei Pete, a professional Sport injury therapist and remedial therapist, emphasises practicing safe Karate to avoid injury. Hara Karate maintains traditional values such as discipline, respect and restraint, influenced by several systems of martial arts; Shotokan, Wado Ryu, Goju Ryu, Tai Chi, Okinawan and Kobudo. Hara Karate Spain was set up in 2007 at Howards Gym by a former member of the UK academy; it is now under the direct control of Sensei Pete Mclaughlin. Simon Stewart, the father of Katie, senior instructor of Hara Karate Academy Spain when Sensei Pete is back in the UK, admitted he got the Karate bug when children started training: he believes that it is the best life preparation that a child can have, promoting discipline, morality and commitment. Aim high and plan well AIM HIGH and plan well – these were the keywords which dominated the ‘Help For Heroes’ Costa Blanca North Supporters Group, as they raised money to support members of the Armed Forces who have been wounded in the service of their country. Those five words paid off, as a total of 5,200€ is now on its way to the H4H, the charity launched on 1 October 2007 by Bryn and Emma Parry and a group of friends, to offer direct, practical support to servicemen and women. The driving force behind the Supporters Group, exmarine, Keith Deacon, was totally amazed at the amount raised, and was extremely grateful for all the support he had received to make this possible.
Last Friday, following a record-breaking auction the week before, Linda Blake and Alan Lewis, charity auctioneers at the El Cid Restaurant in Benidoleig handed over a cheque for 3,250€. This was then followed by the presentation of a cheque for 600€ by David Bluff, Captain of the El Cid Bowls Club. With over 100 members, the Bowls Club, who meet several times a week, generously supported H4H from the Captain’s Charity Fund. The coffers were then swelled with 360€ raised via a Royal Wedding Garden Party; a Fish and Chip Supper and quiz brought in 419€; a raffle and donations added a further 571 €, resulting in the total of 5,200€. The money raised by Help for Heroes is being used to fund projects that make a huge difference to the lives of wounded Servicemen and women. When they started in 2007, they allocated £8 million to the task of providing a new swimming pool and gym complex at DRMC Headley Court, and the complex was officially opened by HRH Prince William in June 2010. They have now raised the £20 million pledged in March 2009 to help pay for the first four Personnel Recovery Centres (PRCs). Work has begun and they hope to see the first, fully comprehensive centre open at Colchester this year, followed soon afterwards with PRCs at Catterick and then Tidworth. H4H have now announced their intention to raise a further £20m to fund Individual Recovery Plans; these will be directed to support wounded Servicemen and women as they progress along the road to recovery and will fund courses and opportunities that will equip them for their futures. Neighbours meet up with the Lions THE TORREVIEJA Costa Lions Club held a Spring Draw for a box of goodies in the Quesada Fish and Chip Shop as part of the Lions’ ‘Strides for Diabetes’ campaign. The draw was on Thursday 11th May and the lucky winner was Dave Sands, proprietor of the Green Baize Snooker Hall, directly next door to Quesada Fish and Chips. Dave was delighted and surprised to win the box, presented by Lion Treasurer Janette Bennett. The Lions thank Tony and all his staff for their continued support. The sum of 99€ was raised, to be added to funds raised from a recent race night at Lo Marabu Restaurant, a tombola at Iceland La Marina and the sponsored walk at La Mata natural park on 14th May.

HELP helps the people of Lorca HELP MURCIA Mar Menor has donated serveral boxes of good quality clothing to the people of Lorca who lost so much in the earthquake that struck the town last week. They have also given much needed children’s toys and clothing. Joan and Bernard delivered the boxes to Castelar College in San Pedro del Pinatar after an appeal by ADAPT, that uses the College for several of its functions.
Valencia CF donate 6,000€ to Lorca victims VALENCIA CF players have donated 6,000€ to the victims of the Lorca earthquake. The donation was announced by club captain, David Navarro, earlier this week as part of an effort to help those affected by the catastrophe. The team is also to donate shirts for auction.
Chefs are customers too BEING A chef and running a restaurant is really hard work. I know, I’ve not only worked in them, I’ve owned quite a few as well. Customers forget that we chefs are customers too and also eat out, albeit very occasionally. We don’t usually cause a fuss when we do, we automatically know not to ask a stupid question in the middle of a busy session, nor do we ask for special treatment which would interfere with the smooth running of the restaurant or take the service away from other diners, but yes we get bad meals too, lots of them. Chefs rarely come into the dining room even when they are asked to as the only reason they are asked to come into the dining room by a customer is when someone is going to complain. Being in a kitchen when the waiter says, “Table 6 wants to see the chef” is like being told that you all have the plague. It’s the only phrase that immediately silences the whole kitchen whilst they all decide who tonight, is going to be “the
chef.” No-one in the main asks to see the chef to say how wonderful the meal was nor to usually ask for the recipe for a particular dish: no it’s just to complain about something. Complaining doesn’t start after the meal; it starts at the beginning, asking for a tomato salad “without tomatoes.” We even overheard a customer in a drive-in burger restaurant in America ask for “two double cheeseburgers without the cheese” amongst other bizarre requests. She explained to her friend that the burgers that they used for the cheeseburgers were different to the burgers they used for normal burgers. Oh pleeease! Not only do chefs know how to complain they usually know what has gone wrong with the meal in the first place. We don’t ask to see the chef in the restaurant or even storm into the kitchen unless we have to. We try to limit the problems from the outset by asking what they do best and

then keep it simple, although I have been known to ask to see the fresh fish if I’m told that “they came in this morning.” Not that I’ve anything against frozen anything really as long as it’s defrosted correctly. I’m quite prepared to phone ahead with a special request if I fancy something special and know not to spring the “I’m allergic to” or “I can’t eat” surprise at 9pm on a Saturday night. Eating out should be a pleasure and it should not be seen as a passport allowing you to vent your
foodie frustrations. If you don’t know what the dish is, ask. Then if you’ve tried it and don’t really like the dish, then say so, I’m sure the chef will be happy to change it: we like people who try things new and take our recommendations. But, if it’s technically wrong then you have every right to bring it to the attention of the management and complain but there is a huge difference between “I don’t like it” and “it’s horrible” - make sure you learn to know the difference.

Running scared in Baku!

ELL DONE to Azerbaijan for deservedly winning last Saturday’s Eurovision Song Contest in Germany with ‘Running Scared’. It’s certainly going to be a massive deal next year when the country’s capital, Baku, stages the largest event in the history of the former Soviet republic. The song title sums up what the country’s TV bosses might be thinking about hosting their biggest ever broadcast, as opposed to their only two cameras pointed at some workers co-operative farm. Meanwhile, I thought Blue’s performance for the UK, though getting a respectable 100 points, lacked a lot of punch through what I thought was a lacklustre audio mix. Despite what Graham Norton said on the BBC, the Spanish entry was poor and was only spared bottom slot by maximum points from friendly neighbours France and Portugal. By the way, full marks to the Dusseldorf crowd who roundly booed every single instance of political voting. You could smell the stench of credibility being stretched to the limit when Dannii Minogue said she wasn’t coming back to the UK ‘X Factor’ as a judge this year. The audition rounds apparently clash with her Australian TV commitments, which don’t seem to have been a problem before, and oh yes, there was her pregnancy last
year. I rather suspect that there was some dithering over her new contract, and she rightly decided to tell the producers to take a running jump. A shame really, as it was generally accepted that she gave more than any other judge to the contestants and didn’t indulge in the circus knockabout stuff that her colleagues did. I love a good conspiracy tale, and having suffered serious withdrawal symptoms after the end of ‘24’ last year, I’m delighted with BBC 2’s new thriller, ‘The Shadow Line’. It’s a corking tale, with some cracking performances, including Rafe Spall in a wonderful role as an unstable nutter. There are no gimmicks here like noisy background music; just a top cast and the sure sign of quality as I groan at the end of the hour, wanting the next episode to magically appear straight away. Mark my words that awards will be showered on this show over the next year.

It’s so easy to judge a book by its cover and that’s so much the case with Lady Gaga. She gives a new definition to the word that is weird, but underneath all the strange fashion and make-up she has a generous spirit, and of course she can really sing. There was plenty of her around last week, either as an entertaining mentor to the hopefuls
on ‘American Idol’, and then jetting in to the UK to promote her new album on ‘The Graham Norton Show’, followed by a gig for Radio 1 and BBC3. On Graham’s show, she insisted on personally thanking a woman who had made some tiny figures of her different costumes, and you could tell that she really meant it. Good for Gaga I say!
Spanish Demystified TO BE fair, all languages need ‘demystifying’. That of most concern to us living here in Spain is the general language of our hosts, i.e. Castellano. And Castellano, despite giving us the benefit of one-rule pronunciation, has its own version of strangled verbs. Plus it has its own quaint way with prepositions, not to mention conditional and subjunctive tenses that are seldom used in spoken English. To whit Spanish is a grammatical language and the grammar needs demystifying. Through McGraw Hill, linguist Jenny Petrow has set about easing the student’s pain by simplifying hard and fast rules in a manner that the student can understand and immediately put into practice. And remember these are simple rules that are easily committed to memory. Having said that, I wish Ms Petrow had had a word with the jacket designer whose blurb includes the inducement that I’ll have no problemo with Spanish after reading the book. But being a writer myself I know such mistakes can happen in production so, although it flaunts the rule that Greek-based Spanish words take a feminine ending but remain masculine, i.e. el problema, I shan’t
hold that against the author. In fact I found the book very helpful and an efficient memory jogger. I absolutely recommend it to anyone who seriously wants to improve their Spanish. Spaniards are a tolerant race and, unlike the French, they’ll make a genuine effort to understand us however fractured our grammar. For that reason alone I believe we should all return the compliment. So enjoy intelligently learning a language that will open doors to the captivating literature of Cervantes and the beautiful poetry of Machado and García Lorca. The tragic events in Lorca were covered brilliantly on Spanish TV last week. ‘Espana Direct’ was rightly extended on ‘La 1’, and was a classic case of pictures telling the story. Meanwhile, the regional ‘7’ channel in Murcia did everything that could have been expected of it, with every angle being professionally covered. Sadly that was not the case with the other regional channel, ‘Television Murciana’ who offered nothing on the night on the region’s biggest story in living memory. Ninety minutes after the second quake, a pre-recorded bulletin went out with a bunch of electioneering politicians as the lead story. I doubt anybody watched it, but TVM ought to hang their heads in shame after the most disgraceful example of non-journalism that I have ever come across.

I have read that if we need glasses to drive to see correctly that we must carry a spare pair in the vehicle and that we can be fined if stopped and cannot produce the spare. Does this apply to sunglasses as well? No. It only applies to glasses needed to correct defective vision. Unless the sunglasses are corrective and the only other pair in the vehicle; then they would qualify. Incidentally the need for glasses is due to some drivers in the past claiming that they had an accident due to their glasses being broken or stolen.
Your book and our local pub forum states that we must carry spare light bulbs so a ‘blown’ one can be changed at the road-side. Is this correct? No. Until recently it was correct but some vehicles are now fitted with Xenon lighting and need a skilled person to change the bulbs (if they ever need changing as they are long-life). An unskilled person could injure him/ herself with electric shock if they try. I still carry spares as I am happy with the normal halogen lighting. Xenon lighting which gives more light costs about €700 to 900 when bought as an option on a new vehicle. What percentage, according to Trafico, of drivers who are involved in accidents where speeding was the cause, was there only one vehicle involved? The figures for 2009/10 report that 80% of accidents
where speeding was subsequently judged to be the reason - that is, no other vehicle involved. This is why there has been a big clampdown on speeding in recent years and it proves that far too many drivers are inept when driving fast. I have a current UK driving licence here in Spain. I need to obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) as I intend to visit countries outside of the EU. What is the best legal way to obtain one? Apply in the UK etc? Go to Trafico? Buy one from adverts – about €250 –€500 in the local English Press? With a ‘ring of stars’EU driving licence that has not expired (remember the mandatory medicals in Spain even for foreign licences) you may drive anywhere within the EU using this document (card) as it is. If you are to visit any other non-EU country then you will need an IDP. If you are resident in Spain, you may register your UK driving licence at Trafico (for free) and then obtain a Spanish IDP for less than €13. You will need to go to your local Trafico to register the UK DL. Legally we may have to place a GB sticker on the rear as the EU number plates are not fully recognised in many other countries. I see that there are offers on the Internet where we can obtain a new driving licence even if we have been banned OR for a classification that we have

not passed a driving test for. The website states ‘due to a glitch in the rules…’ Are these offers legal? No. I have often said in the past that there is no such thing as a stupid question only sometimes a stupid answer. Those of us who use common sense will realise immediately that this is a scam, and I have researched the sources and came up over a year or so ago that these new driving licences were then from Hungary. They may be genuine but they are not legal, as to obtain a new driving licence in an EU country you need to reside there as a tax resident and change a current EU licence for the new one signing a statement that you have not been banned anywhere. As we see adverts here for ‘genuine UK MOT certificates or Road Fund Tax Discs’, I urge extreme caution as unless the UK-plated vehicle has been taken to an MOT garage in the UK, it will be illegal, and there is the case of the couple caught recently working out of a caravan in Essex (and a luxury villa in Portugal) who were selling stolen MOT certificates. In these times of financial hardship, there will always be those trying to make a good living regardless of the means used. It actually reflected the number of illegal vehicles on the Continent; as the couple were reported to have taken in over £1-million in four years at £100 to 150 a time. Better to have legalised the UK-plated vehicles instead.

The Owners of Blackburn Rovers
You have to wonder why on earth the current owners of Blackburn Rovers wanted to buy the club in the first place. Clearly, it has nothing to do with liking football. First off they sacked Sam Allardyce back in December of last year insisting that they wanted the side to play ‘entertaining football’ and that they required a top four finish. Then, instead of hiring a tried and trusted replacement, they left caretaker boss Steve Kean in charge for the remainder of the season. At the time Anuradha Desai said “the fans should trust us because this is in the best interests of the club.” Well, that’s really worked out for them hasn’t it? Going in to ‘Survival Sunday’, Rovers are just one point off the relegation zone. And how have the Indian owners reacted to that? Unbelievably, by demanding that Kean leave the UK this week and travel to Pune for his regular monthly briefing rather than working with the players. I’ve nothing against Rovers, but a drop down to the Championship is exactly what these arrogant and unknowledgeable owners deserve.

THIS WEEK I paid a long overdue visit to El Plantio and I must say that it was in the best condition that I have seen for a few years. IN HONOUR of the passing of Seve Ballesteros last week, the team at MurciaGolf.co decided to pay a visit to Peraleja Golf, one of the courses that the great man designed. Upon entry to the resort, we were met with an impressive clubhouse; probably the best that we’ve seen to date. Located over three floors, the highlight is the second floor restaurant, wherewe had a pre-golf drink overlooking the courseand stunning valleys that surround it. Our party consisted of a professional, low handicapper, mid handicapper and a novice; all found the course to be challenging but not overly difficult. The fairways are gently sloped, while holes such as the Signature Par 4 14th, with its greenside bunker that goes around the entire green and the short Par 3 16th, give the course variety which is suitable for all levels. The course has had some drainage issues recently with parts of the 1st and 17thfairways under repair, but we are reliably informed that it is not a long term problem. This aside, the course was a hugely enjoyable one to play, and naturally we also enjoyed our post-golf beer on the clubhouse balcony!

UK dust up Every now and again, an all-British punch up captures the imagination of the domestic fight-loving audience. That is certainly the case when it comes to the show down between super-middleweight’s James DeGale and George Groves. In one corner you have the super cocky, smooth moving, Olympic medallist DeGale and in the other, the younger, two-time ABA champion Groves. Added to that, it’s clear that DeGale is still smarting after losing to Groves in their amateur days. And if all that wasn’t enough, there’s the small matter that they absolutely hate each other. This isn’t any phoney war – they genuinely do not get on and it all points to being a classic showdown on Saturday night at the O2 Arena. Catch it if you can. Red or blue = black and blue Last Saturday, Manchester United tied up their 19th top flight title after their 1 – 1 draw at Blackburn. A few hours later, Manchester City claimed their first trophy for 35 years following a 1 – 0 success over Stoke in the FA Cup final at Wembley. So you would have thought that being in Manchester city centre on Saturday night would have been fun. I can tell you, from firsthand experience that it was anything but. On a short walk from one hotel to another to meet up with some colleagues, I witnessed two mass brawls and one shocking case of domestic violence. Yes, I know that sport is important and to many people, it’s their reason for existing, but you’d think on a day when both clubs had enjoyed a winning experience, all the fans, red or blue, could have had a good time. Obviously not.

THERE IS little doubt that the cost of a game of golf here in Spain has gone down in recent times. There have been various reasons for this although many golfers still feel there is still some way to go before the golf courses offer real value for money. We may be in for a shock as clubs are beginning to think that they can no longer absorb all the increased costs we have seen in the last few years. Some clubs are seriously considering increasing their prices come autumn. I personally think this could be a disastrous move. Just as we are beginning to see golfers return to the fairways as golf becomes more affordable, any price increase now will surely drive them away again. I am well aware that costs have gone up substantially in recent years. Anyone living in Spain for more than three years will be aware that the cost of living has rocketed. The wages of the average Spaniard has increased to keep pace with inflation and this has had a knock-on effect on everything. Many of our golf courses have made staff redundant to reduce costs and there is now a serious danger that some of our golf courses will deteriorate in condition if we see any more people leave their jobs. The only practical solution as I see it is to get more and more people playing the game. That way revenue will continue to grow and costs can be met and profits made. The cost of a green fee must be kept affordable and some level of service has to be provided. We need to see golfers made welcome at our golf clubs and that must start
from the managers at the clubs. All too often I get letters from readers telling me they get ignored by managers they have known a number of years: rude bar and catering staff are also too prevalent and maybe we need to tell these people politely that they risk losing their jobs by acting as they do, although how many that will actually listen is anybody’s guess. Let’s all do our bit to raise standards and avoid if necessary the places where we are not made welcome. AS I’VE stressed over these last few months, the key to safety on the water is ‘Be Vigilant’, correct? So now I’m going to amend this simple instruction to ‘Be Vigilant On and AROUND The Water’…I’ll explain: Karena is ready to be ‘signed up’. For reasons far too complicated for this short piece, I currently have no water on my mooring, so I was advised to take along a couple of piers to use a hose there instead. I moored up and called to my mate Malcolm, who was going to do all the signs for us. He was in his boat across the channel on the next pier, when I noticed a ‘clank’, ‘clank’, ‘clank’, along the marina. It was a ‘marinero’, cycling along the marina walkway with a ladder under his right arm… handlebars in his left hand…and the clanking was the ladder hitting his saddle. In front of him was a ‘Looky Looky’ man. He was so dark, he was almost blue-black! As he was cycling he turned his head around to see where the noise was coming from not taking the blindest bit of notice which direction his cycle was going…and, you’ve guessed it…SPLASH! He went careering into the water full tilt. His legs were still pedalling has he hit the drink. The weird thing was….his bag of tomatoes flew slow motion-like through the air to finish with a resounding ‘splat’ on the marina pavement. He seemed to be down in the depths a long time, so
I was preparing to jump in for him when he surfaced spluttering and swearing, (I think he was swearing)… by now the marinero had got off his bike and was stifling a giggle or two. He was yelling at him (the ‘Looky, Looky’ man) to get on the boat moored up next to him instead of trying to clamber up the marina wall! I was in fits. It was like the scene from ET when they take off on their BMXs and they’re still pedalling? The marinero actually helped the poor chap put all his squashed tomatoes back in his Mercadona bag (!) and helped him onto shore. His phones were ruined…(he had 3 or 4, quite why, god knows)…his money was saturated. Come to think of it he had a fair bit of dosh on him…anyway, I digress… The moral of this story is surely simple: When on, or around water, if you don’t want to make yourself the subject of the afternoon’s entertainment….BE VIGILANT! The Looky Looky man should have been a Looking Looking man. If I live to be a hundred I probably will never see such a thing ever again - more’s the pity. It was quite simply one of the funniest things I have ever seen. Keep those emails coming in. This match was the 2nd in the Summer League competition. The match there several weeks ago produced only low weights, so there was some trepidation as to how it was going to fish. The water level is as high as I have seen it and it rose several inches during the match. Those that have been there know that is an awful lot of water. Some of the swims on the left hand side of the point could not be used due to the high water level. The day proved to be good as seen by the weights. Awesome gardening breaks By Dick Handscombe: RTN gardening columnist. HOWEVER ONE enjoys gardening and however long the list of jobs to do a break is required from time to time. Over the past twenty five years that has meant for me a few days walking or fishing. Until recently the fishing has been enjoyable but mediocre in terms in terms of size of fish. The turning point was going to RibaRoja del Ebre (on the River Ebro in English), a small town that was at the centre of the harsh hundred day Battle of the Ebro during the civil war , to give a gardening talk and meeting up with a local fishing guide and coach Nick Shaddock. Having driven along the wide Ebro river, often in deep gorges, for an hour from the coastal AP7 motorway at Amposta I had realised that it would take a lifetime to get to know the river and discover good accessible fishing spots. Being now 74 it therefore made sense to hire Nick to take me fishing for a few days in March and April using his Dick and his 36lb excellent rods and reels. The two days fishing in March were great, but the three days in May were awesome. 16 fish carp

Anglers Together ANGLERS TOGETHER was formed to introduce and encourage anglers of all abilities to meet up and get together to fish, either sea or freshwater. Firm friendships have been formed during the time the group has been active and information on fishing venues and licenses required are available at the meetings or by regular emailed newsletters. Meetings are held in two locations on the second Friday and Saturday of each month. Anyone with an interest in fishing (sea or freshwater) is welcome to come along. The next meeting at Mary’s Bar, Campoverde (near Pilar de la Horadada) will be held on Friday 10th of June at 12 noon. On Saturday 11th of June at 12 noon the meeting will be held at The New Royal Bar and Restaurant at El Alamillo, opposite the seafront between Isla Plana and the Port. Awesome for me, as before discovering Nick and the Ebro my largest carp had been ten pounds with most just a pound or two. I’m caught so go back again in June! As my wife Clodagh said: “Life is too short not to.” No way can one catch such monsters in local waters and RibaRoja is very easily accessible by car for a few days’ break or when travelling to or from France en route to the UK or your Spanish home.
