A Message from Board President Sidney Dillard and CEO Nancy Wright

Resilient. Ready. Strong. Grounded in optimism, yet often fueled by adversity, these three powerful words speak volumes about the inner fortitude it takes to navigate a world of everyday challenges and difficult decisions.

Life is rarely easy, especially for girls. Expectations of perfection, high achievement, and fierce competition weigh heavy on girls and young women. They tell us they feel unbelievable pressure, stress, and self-doubt. They also tell us that they need Girl Scouts.

As Girl Scouts, girls learn to find their purpose, passion, and perspective by accentuating their already positive qualities and practicing the vital skills of decision-making, risktaking, and leadership that build resiliency over time. They find a place where they can find the strength to overcome those doubts, see a world of opportunity, and navigate life’s unpredictable challenges.

Together with our donors, partners, and champions, we are creating brighter and more equitable futures for girls. We invite you to engage with our work on behalf of all girls, building our capacity to provide more girls with access to the equitable experiences and resources that they need not just to survive, but to thrive.

This year’s annual report celebrates our indefatigable spirit, financial savvy, resourcefulness, and joy as we carry out our mission. Celebrate with us as we recognize the caring individuals, corporations, foundations, and alums who partnered with us to provide a safe space for girls when they needed it most.

We are forever grateful. Thank you.

Carole Brown, Girl Scout Alumni

“When I look back on my time as a Girl Scout, I realize that Girl Scouts changed the trajectory of my life. The Girl Scouts gave a little Black girl her voice back. They let a little Black girl be seen for more than the color of her skin. There is power in this organization. I wouldn’t be standing here if I hadn’t been a Junior and a Cadette. I want to thank you very much for the support.”

Membership | Resilient, Ready, Strong

Girl Scouts takes the potential of girls, combines it with robust skill-building, and adds caring adult mentors and female role models who support and advocate for girls. It offers a safe space where girls can try new things, develop a range of skills, take on leadership roles, and just be themselves. The council continues to prioritize the intentional, integrated work of recovering its membership after the impact of the multi-year pandemic, keenly aware of the disproportionate impact on diverse communities. With equity and access at the heart of its membership strategy, GSGCNWI seeks to deepen its commitment to being a community-based organization responsive to the needs of families and all girls.

Innovation, community asset mapping, and partnerships are at the heart of our work to engage more girls from specific, underrepresented zip codes with higher percentages of families identifying as low-income households.

Camp & Outdoors | Resilient, Ready, Strong

In 2022, Girl Scouts got outdoors! We all wanted to be back outside with each other, and throughout the entire year Girl Scouts experienced hikes, campfires, snowshoeing, high adventure, canoeing, hiking, and more! In addition, Girl Scout troops chose our camps to come together for a variety of fun day, overnight, and weekend events and reservations.

During the summer, we saw camp return to Camp Juniper Knoll after a two-year hiatus. We also saw the return of international staff, who bring their experiences and culture to share with our campers as well as help support our overall mission of getting girls outdoors.

GCNWI’s outdoor programming featured a variety of fun, challenging, and experiential activities that empowered girls as they develop values, skills, and behaviors essential to effective leadership in the outdoors.

Testimonials

“Our daughter has tried out a smorgasbord of camps this summer and based on her reaction I can tell that Camp Greene Wood blew them all away. Every day she came home and had so much awesomeness to talk about. Her friends, her counselors, the games, the songs, you name it! So, THANK YOU for taking on the heat and humidity, the sun and the rain, the bugs and the sweat and the crazy dropoff/pickup line. Your team made magic all week for your campers, especially mine!”

“As our final week of camp wraps up, I don’t know how to begin to thank you all. We have watched our daughter beam with confidence this summer in endless new ways. We are so grateful for the amazing camp experience that you all work incredibly hard to create!!”

Our Volunteers | Resilient, Ready, Strong

Girl Scout volunteers are the heartbeat of our council, and we would not be here without their continued dedication and support to our mission, to build girls of courage, confidence, and character.

Brand new volunteers who may be joining Girl Scouts for the first time have to be courageous as they take on a role they have never had before, like troop leader or cookie manager. They demonstrate this courage by stepping out of their comfort zone and teaching 30 brand new Daisies how to use their courage to become our future leaders.

Some of our volunteers take on multiple roles and use their confidence to coach and support other volunteers. They take on roles like service unit manager, council trainer or service unit product manager, because they want all volunteers to feel empowered and confident to lead their Girl Scouts as they discover, connect, and take action.

Others serve as council delegates or on committees and task groups. They embody the desire to make the world a better place for future generations. Their character shines brightly as they preserve history, embrace change and mentor other volunteers.

Whether a volunteer has been a Girl Scout for two weeks or 75 years, Girl Scout volunteers bring our mission to life, not only by building girls of courage, confidence, and character, but by demonstrating the mission daily.

Centering Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Everything We Do

Girl Scouts is a place for every girl, honoring the differences that make everyone unique and valuable contributors, while recognizing commonalities. In alignment with GSGCNWI’s multi-year council strategy, we are striving to be an equitable organization that promotes inclusion and actively works to be anti-racist. We are examining practices and processes embedded throughout our structures, leadership, policies, culture, and programs. In partnership with Fostering Healthy Solutions, our DEI consultant, we are developing our council’s five-year DEI strategy.

One initiative designed to encourage more diverse representation in outdoor experiences is the “Life Outdoors is LIT!” series. Progressive, family-oriented programming was designed to remove barriers, increase access, and address the stereotypes and generational traumas that influence family decisions about sending their girls to camp and other outdoor experiences.

In 2022 Girl Scouts of USA released a funding opportunity for up to six councils to each receive a $10,000 grant to support multicultural family camp events. Research showed that less than 10% of people engaging in outdoor experiences at recreational parks and camps included people of color. These events aimed to increase racial, ethnic, and social-economic diversity among our resident and day camps.

Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana invited specific girls to participate in the grant-funded program as part of an effort to include girls who would not typically engage with summer camp programs. A part of this program included early registration for summer camp programs to ensure these girls, who we do not typically see at camp programs, had access to attend during the summer camp season last year. The goal was to sign up 30 girls to day camp and 10 girls to resident camp by the start of camp season. This work is part of GSGCNWI’s continued work to improve inclusion and access across our council offerings.

Our 2022 cookie program brought about some unique challenges. Who would have thought that supply chain shortages would have affected the production of Girl Scout cookies?! Our girls prove that nothing can stop them from moving forward despite unexpected uncertainties that may come their way.

Customers were excited to try the new cookie - “Adventurefuls.” When the girls learned that our supplier could no longer easily obtain the materials to make the cookie, while disheartened they continued to persevere making efforts to promote the cookies we did have available.

Even though our cookie program had to conclude sooner than expected, troops came up with creative ways to empty their cookie supply and offer cookie supporters options like donating to our Gift of Caring program to help them reach their personal and troop goals.

What’s great about our Girl Scouts is that they learn to adapt to life’s challenges! The skills they have learned over the past cookie seasons have enabled them to be forward thinkers and ready to take on the world and all it has to offer them. It all begins with the simple question of “would you like to buy a box of Girl Scout cookies?” That simple ask has and continues to make a great impact in the lives of every Girl Scout now and forever!

The Girl Scout Cookie: An Origin Story

Take a look at the origin story of the the Girl Scout Cookie Program—from what started as a small localized fundraiser in the early 1900s to a culturally iconic institution of American culture today.

Girl Scout Senior Madison Uses Cookies for Community Service!

Girl Scouts can do incredible things, especially when they have the drive to do good and make the world a better place with ingenious and creative solutions.

Girl Scout Madison

“I wish others knew about how Girl Scouts is preparing me, and other girls, to assume leadership roles in our future endeavors. Girl Scouting gives me a sense of responsibility and community. Girl Scouts is not just about selling cookies, or community service projects. Many of my closest friends are Girl Scouts. We’ve maintained our friendships through mutual respect, trust, and honesty, which are all promoted in Girl Scouting.”

Girl Scouts takes the potential of girls, combines it with robust skill-building, and adds caring adult mentors and female role models who support and advocate for girls. It offers a safe space where girls can try new things, develop a range of skills, take on leadership roles, and just be themselves.

Most of all, Girl Scouts provides a place to connect and belong when nothing seems familiar or “normal.” Certainly nothing was normal in 2021, a membership year which reflected the full, unsettling impact of the pandemic. It was far from easy to keep the heartbeat of our Movement strong, but our Girl Scout tenacity kicked in and helped us make a difference in the lives of girls. We persevered with resiliency, determination, and improvisation to serve a total membership of 42,514 girls and adults in a year like none other.

FOR YOUR SUPPORT

Jennifer Youngmark 31

Ways to Support | Resilient, Ready, Strong

Girls represent humanity’s greatest untapped talent pool. Investing in them will produce the greatest return in economic development, social progress, and public health-improving not only individual lives but the fabric of society overall.

Girls are resilient, but they also need support as they navigate peer pressure, unrealistic expectations, racial inequity, gender bias, and other threats to their social/emotional and mental health. To thrive, girls need advocates who rally around them, encourage them, and invest in them. They need you.

Your involvement in Girl Scouts is an investment in our community, in our country, and in our future. Together, we can help girls discover their untapped potential and build girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. Join us!

Invest in Future Leaders

Your tax-deductible donation helps us provide financial assistance, deliver girl-led, equitable programs and community connections for all girls, and provide training and support for our volunteers.

Consider a Planned Giving

What do you want your legacy to be? Our Juliette Gordon Low Society celebrates charitable planned gifts to Girl Scouts and helps ensure every girl in every zip code has the opportunity to experience Girl Scouts for generations to come.
