Promise On my honor, I will try: To serve God* and my country, To help people at all times, and to live by the Girl Scout Law. *individuals may substitute wording appropriate to their own spiritual beliefs for the word “God”

Law I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout.

ABOUT US We’re 6,000 Go-getters, Innovators, Risk-takers, and Leaders (G.I.R.L.) who make Southern Nevada a better place through community service projects, leadership development, and public advocacy. Continuing the legacy of our founder, Juliette Gordon Low, Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada prepares girls to meet their world with courage, confidence, and character. As our Council enters its 87th year of welcoming all girls into the Girl Scout sisterhood, we’re preparing future female leaders through our four content pillars: STEAM (Science, Tech, Engineering, Arts, and Math), Outdoor Experiences, Life Skills, and Entrepreneurship. Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada continues to be the preeminent leadership development organization where girls learn and thrive in a safe and supportive all-girl setting.

9 Things You May Not Know About Girl Scouts 1

Girls can attend program events without their troop.

Sometimes there may be an event or program your daughter really wants to attend but her troop isn’t going. That doesn’t mean she has to miss it! We offer a wide range of activities for girls to explore their interests. Plus, she'll make new friends with similar interests and expand her friendship circle ever more.

2

You don’t have to be in a troop to be a Girl Scout.

Girl Scouts is for EVERY girl, even those who can’t find a troop or maybe just don’t want to be in a troop. These independent Girl Scouts, who we call Juliettes in honor of Girl Scout founder Juliette Gordon Low, can participate in programs, attend events, earn awards, go camping, and even participate in our Fall Product and Girl Scout Cookie programs!

3

Our girls are partially funded through grants and donations.

People don’t always think of Girl Scouts as a charity, but it is. The support of individual and corporate donors provides girls with access to the Girl Scout Leadership Experience as a critical and vital developmental tool so they can take the lead, like a Girl Scout.

6

The Girl Scout Fall Product and Cookie Programs are about much more than money. Though it’s easy to get swept up in how many boxes were sold or which incentives were earned, these two programs are about so much more. They give girls practical experience to let them develop 5 critical skills that will last a lifetime—goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics. (See pages 50–51 for a peek at both programs.)

7

The Girl Scout Gold Award puts you in an elite and prestigious category.

Did you know that girls can work on their Gold Award, even if they did not achieve their Bronze or Silver Award? Nationally, only 5% of Girl Scouts complete their Gold Award. It’s not too late to begin your project and join the elite group of women who achieved the highest honor in Girl Scouting.

8

Girl Scouts are way more than “camping, crafts and cookies.”

4

The VTK is a digital tool that leaders can use to plan out their entire Girl Scout year, track finances, communicate with parents, and so much more. Think of it as a digital personal assistant for leaders. Parents can also use the VTK to get information on everything the troop is doing.

It’s true that those are all a part of who we are—and we do them better than anyone—but that only scratches the surface. Our four programming pillars (outdoor, STEAM, life skills, and entrepreneurship) offer girls activities and experiences necessary for them to succeed through five key outcomes: sense of self, positive values, challenge seeking, healthy relationships, and community problem solving. Whether girls are practicing environmental stewardship, showing an appreciation of STEAM pursuits, or finding strength in each other to deal with bullying; they are being prepared for a lifetime of leadership on their terms.

5

9

The Volunteer Toolkit (VTK) isn't just for volunteers.

Once a Girl Scout, always a Girl Scout.

If you’ve ever said, or heard someone say, “I wasn’t a Girl Scout, but I was a Brownie,” they are wrong! Not only were they a Girl Scout, they still are. Because, as we like to say, “Once a Girl Scout, always a Girl Scout.” Whether you were in the program for a year or two in grade school or joined as an adult to help guide your own child, you will always be part of this wonderful life changing organization that’s helped shape you into who you are today.

Troop Leaders don’t have to be the experts on every aspect of Girl Scouts.

A quick glance at our Training Opportunities (pages 46– 47) is all it takes to realize that there are A LOT of skills you can gain to facilitate the full Girl Scout experience but it's not just the leader who should be left to acquire the knowledge. Troop volunteers can hold certifications and partake in trainings as well, giving the leader some much needed help and allowing the girls opportunities to try something new. In return, you get to generate wonderful memories for everyone from your involvement and build your own skillset.

Play It Safe Self Defense NEW THIS YEAR! In partnership with Defense in Heels, PLAY IT SAFE is a fun, interactive, age appropriate self-defense method that teaches Brownies and Juniors to respond appropriately to unique challenges they might face including: dealing with bullies, friendship drama, stranger awareness, in-appropriate touch from someone they might know, and abduction defense. PLAY IT SAFE is based on a simple but very effective step-by-step approach where students roleplay their techniques against trained instructors in age-appropriate scenarios. This empowering class teaches children ages 7 to 11 years to be aware of their surroundings, project confidence, set boundaries with their voice, and trust their intuition. This is reinforced through hands-on, repetitive training. Brownies and Juniors will role-play with a mock “stranger” and a mock “bully”, while being coached by an instructor.
