Get Inspired This catalog is a way to acquaint you with Girlstart. I hope this is just a beginning! Come to visit us, or participate in one of our programs. We always have something for you to do. Girlstart After School is reaching more than a thousand girls every week throughout the school year. It’s the largest program of its type in the nation, and thanks to you, it’s free for girls. This year, we were able to show the impact that Girlstart After School makes on a girl’s life: higher test scores, increased access to advanced STEM coursework, and better preparation for a STEM major and career. Nearly 50 schools are part of our Girlstart After School network, and we’re grateful for our school community partnerships that make a difference for girls. Girlstart Summer Camp continues to expand. In 2014, 674 girls in 27 camps held in Austin, across Texas, and in three other states had the opportunity
of experiencing hands-on STEM fun that is aligned with STEM careers. Thanks to you, 356--53% --of those girls were able to attend on scholarship!

ways to give Girlstart works because of you. Because of you who participate in our programs. Because of you who volunteer your efforts and energies. And especially you who make financial contributions. Our annual budget is primarily dedicated for STEM supplies and materials that we use in our programs, and for staff to develop and lead these programs. Ways to Give: • Our corporate, foundation, and government partners are our lifeblood. • Annual support, particularly through our STEM Society leadership giving circle, our ‘Send a Girl to Camp’ campaign, or our Annual Luncheon, is vital. • In-kind contributions help us conserve resources and direct more funds to STEM education programs for girls. • Our Legacy Society members make a bequest to Girlstart, which will build a lasting future for Girlstart and the girls we serve.
“Inside a Girlstart computer lab, it was easy to envision those girls as the scientists and math moguls of tomorrow.” -Stephanie Barko, STEM Society Member

girlstart after school Girlstart After School reaches more than 1,000 4th-6th grade girls with free STEM education programs every week throughout the school year at our partner schools, as well as wraparound services to support STEM learning in each partner school. Research now shows that Girlstart After School participants consistently out-perform their peers on state-mandated math and science tests, and they enroll in advanced math and science courses and STEM electives at a significantly higher rate than their non-participant peers.
Now, Girlstart is reaching more than 17 districts in Central Texas, as well as ‘to Go’ in Bryan, McAllen, San Antonio, Taylor, Tyler, Waco, and the DFW area. And we aim to grow further! Girlstart is planning to scale Girlstart After School to reach more girls. If you are a principal or superintendent and want to talk about ways we might expand to your school or district, let us know!
Recognized as ‘what works’ in STEM education by Change the Equation, Girlstart After School is unique: it is the most robust program of its kind in the nation. It is weekly, standards-aligned and research-based, and reaches more girls than any other STEM program in America. Our Girlstart After School girls are an extremely diverse group, and they come from everyday schools that are trying to find more ways to keep girls interested in math and science. Our principals know that Girlstart After School is making a difference in girls’ academic achievement.
“ I truly saw confidence grow in my girls when it came to their science skills.” -Lisa Cantu, Campus Coordinator and 5th grade Teacher at Cooper Elementary

We recruit, train, and support a cadre of college students, preservice teachers or STEM majors that we call the STEM CREW (creative, resourceful, empowered women). Our STEM CREW provides us with a consistent, talented, committed, and skilled group of program leaders at the same time we train them to conduct Girlstart programming. When they graduate and become teachers or STEM professionals, our STEM CREW alumnae expand the network of Girlstart-trained advocates in the field.
