WHERE GIRLS GET INSPIRED Greetings! Even if you know us well, I hope we will see you at Girlstart soon. We have many STEM programs throughout the year for you--and your loved ones--to enjoy. This catalog aims to show you what your support has made possible: inspiring, high-quality STEM programs that inspire girls to take on global challenges. Girlstart After School is reaching more than 1,300 girls every week throughout the school year. It’s the largest program of its type in the nation, and thanks to you, it’s free for girls, parents, and schools. Girlstart After School has been shown to make a significant impact on a girl’s life: higher test scores and grades, increased access to advanced STEM coursework, and better preparation for a STEM major and career.

Girlstart Summer Camp continues to grow. In 2015, 719 girls participated in 27 camps held in Austin, across Texas, and in three other states. Thanks to you, 341--47%!--of those girls were able to attend on scholarship. Our Girls in STEM conference and Community STEM programs, especially our ‘Starry Nights’ at Girlstart, are other ways for you to share in our work. Whatever you do: please join our movement! We are ready to grow, and your advocacy and support will help us accomplish our goals. Because of you, girls are ready to take on the world’s greatest challenges. Thank you!

WAYS TO GIVE

Where your generous general operating support goes:

Girlstart works because of you. Because of you who participate in our programs. Because of you who volunteer your efforts and energies. And especially you who make financial contributions. Our annual budget is primarily dedicated for STEM supplies and materials that we use in our programs, and for staff to develop and lead these programs. Ways to Give:

• Our corporate, foundation, and government partners are our lifeblood. • Annual support, particularly through our STEM Society leadership giving circle, our ‘Send a Girl to Camp’ campaign, or our Annual Luncheon, is vital. • In-kind contributions help us conserve resources and direct more funds to STEM education programs for girls. • Our Legacy Society members make a bequest to Girlstart, which will build a lasting future for Girlstart and the girls we serve.

“I support Girlstart because I love the passion and commitment they have to encourage young girls to stay in STEM. They make it fun, !stneve erom r of vents!e encourage the whole family, et i s re e Ch ber w mor u o t u o k c fo and give these girls the eck o i te u t o u r w ebs empowerment they need.” 82% Programs -Becky Hyde, Founding STEM Society Member

Your continued support to Girlstart helps us sustain our programs. Give online at www.girlstart.org/give. Thank you! www.girlstart.org

WAYS TO VOLUNTEER Volunteers share an important role in the success of Girlstart’s programs. There are many ways to get involved and volunteer at Girlstart! Visit our website to see how you or your group can help. Ways to Volunteer:

• Girlstart Community STEM Booths • STEM Extravaganza Booths • Gardening • Office support • Work projects (painting and/or organizing) • Curriculum support • Committee members for special events • Summer camp volunteers (high school girls) • Lead a workshop for our Girls In STEM Conference

“I found Girlstart was everything I was looking for in a volunteer program. Most of all, spreading the word to girls that what I loved all my life - a career in biology and research - could be exciting and fun for them too.” -Brenda Kahan, Girlstart Volunteer

GIRLSTART AFTER SCHOOL

www.girlstart.org

GIRLSTART AFTER SCHOOL Girlstart After School reaches more than 1,300 4th-6th grade girls with free STEM education programs every week throughout the school year at our partner schools, as well as wraparound services to support STEM learning in each partner school. Research shows that Girlstart After School participants consistently out-perform their peers on state-mandated math and science tests (STAAR), and they enroll in advanced math and science courses and STEM electives at a significantly higher rate than their non-participant peers.

Girlstart is currently reaching more than 17 districts in Central Texas, as well as ‘to Go’ in Bryan, San Antonio, Waco, and the greater Houston, DFW, and Rio Grande Valley areas. And we aim to grow further! Girlstart is planning to scale Girlstart After School to reach more girls. If you are a principal or superintendent and want to talk about ways we might expand to your school or district, let us know!

Recognized as ‘what works’ in STEM education by Change the Equation, Girlstart After School is unique: it is the most robust program of its kind in the nation. It is weekly, standards-aligned and research-based, and reaches more girls than any other STEM program in America. Our Girlstart After School girls are an extremely diverse group, and they come from everyday schools that are trying to find more ways to keep girls interested in math and science. Our principals know that Girlstart After School is making a difference in girls’ academic achievement.

“Thank you so much for the important work you do with our girls. We look forward to more opportunities to work with you.” -Gina Butcher, Principal at Fuentes Elementary www.girlstart.org

STEM CREW Creative Resourceful Empowered Women To make our programs possible and scalable, we have a unique internship program. We recruit, train, and support a cadre of college students, preservice teachers and STEM majors that we call the STEM CREW (creative, resourceful, empowered women). Our STEM CREW provide us with a consistent, talented, committed, and skilled group of program leaders, while at the same time we train them to conduct Girlstart programming. STEM CREW have the opportunity to improve their leadership and communication abilities, their classroom management skills, and teaching style. When they graduate and become teachers or STEM professionals, our STEM CREW alumnae expand the network of Girlstart-trained advocates in the workforce.

“My favorite part (of being a STEM CREW member) is sparking an interest in girls which I believe will ultimately empower them to feel more confident about math and science. -Nayelli, STEM CREW
