[ENG] Let’s pick up where we left off. This edition of the magazine is slightly different but it is, for us all at Giro, our way of saying: Let’s restart together! In this issue you will find some of our historic inserts (some maps of the region) as well as plenty of ideas for your leisure time and getaways in Friuli Venezia Giulia, hoping things will get back to normal soon. This is a different magazine, just as things have been different in the last period and probably will continue to be in the coming months. And speaking of customs that have changed, also the taste for honeymoons has evolved, so much so that one out of five couples choose to go on their wedding trip with friends. Many newlyweds opt of what obviously seems a perfect combination: a honeymoon which combines romance and the company of good friends. This “buddymoon” craze began with Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux who brought their close friends along on their honeymoon to Bora Bora in 2015, and rapidly swept globally from the States. Today’s younger crowds are increasingly choosing to go on a buddymoon rather than a traditional, romantic honeymoon; for many it is the first important trip of their lives and probably a one-time occasion for such a great holiday. Couples who prefer going on their wedding holiday with friends are generally in their first marriage and most likely their choice is the result of a modern standard of living: nowadays, partners live together for years before tying the knot and have the extra money to spend on a fabulous trip rather than on setting up a new home. What better way to celebrate the great event than spending a fun holiday in the company of good friends? Buddymoons are a hit also because organising a trip for a larger group allows for a wider range of exotic destinations at a better price tag. The holiday can be tailored to the wishes and preferences of the newlyweds and be the perfect occasion to enjoy extraordinary experiences in unique locations, for example, spend a couple nights in transparent bubble rooms immersed in wild surroundings, or in floating bungalows. Why, you may wonder, would you want to spend your wedding trip with a bunch of people always around you? It sounds more like a school trip than a honeymoon! Well, a buddymoon worth of its name must include tête-à-tête moments for the newlyweds: candlelight dinners, dreamy walks on the beach at sunset, and relaxing couple massages. Prima [ITA] Riprendiamo da dove siamo stati interrotti. Questo che avete tra le mani è un numero diverso dal solito e per noi di Giro è il modo di dire: Ripartiamo! Nella rivista che state sfogliando abbiamo unito alcune nostre produzioni storiche (alcune nostre mappe del territorio) con le segnalazioni per il vostro tempo libero e per le vacanze di prossimità, con la viva speranza che a breve tutti possiamo tornare alla normalità. Un numero diverso, così come molte cose sono state diverse e lo saranno ancora nei prossimi mesi. E a proposito di abitudini che cambiano, anche le preferenze per i viaggi di nozze negli ultimi anni stanno mutando, tanto che una coppia di sposi su cinque sceglie oggi la luna di miele in compagnia di amici. Sono infatti sempre più numerosi i novelli sposi che decidono di vivere quella che sembra una combinazione perfetta: un viaggio di nozze tra amore e amicizia. La tendenza si è diffusa a livello globale partendo dal mondo anglosassone e dai vip di Hollywood. A scatenare l’effetto “tutti pazzi per la luna di miele con gli amici” sono stati Jennifer Aniston e Justin Theroux che nel 2015 subito dopo le nozze sono partiti alla volta di Bora Bora per il viaggio di nozze in compagnia degli amici più stretti. Era nata la tendenza della buddymoon, dove buddy sta per “amico del cuore”. Sono i giovani che sempre più spesso scelgono la buddymoon a spese della più classica honeymoon - la luna di miele tête-à-tête - e per molti di essi questo è il primo viaggio importante della vita - e probabilmente per molto tempo sarà l’unica vacanza così bella. Gli sposi che scelgono la luna di miele tra amici sono generalmente al primo matrimonio e la loro scelta è figlia di un modello di vita sempre più diffuso: le coppie convivono per un po’ di anni prima di sposarsi e in vista delle nozze non hanno la necessità di preventivare le spese per l’arredo della casa. Per questo reputano che un bellissimo viaggio per divertirsi insieme agli amici sia il modo migliore per festeggiare il grande evento. La buddymoon è molto richiesta anche perché la partenza di gruppo garantisce la priorità di poter valutare tra più destinazioni, con un notevole risparmio sul prezzo finale. Spazio quindi a una vacanza su misura, pianificata e organizzata tenendo conto di preferenze, gusti ed esigenze dei novelli marito e moglie, che consentano sia agli sposi che agli amici di vivere momenti particolari, come ad esempio alcune notti in camere trasparenti a forma di bolle immersi nella natura o in bungalow galleggianti sull’acqua. Ma allora, vi chiederete, la nuova tendenza è un viaggio di nozze con gli amici sempre tra i piedi, che sembra più una gita di classe che una luna di miele? Ebbene no: una buddymoon che si rispetti prevede anche momenti romantici a due, come le cene a lume di candela, le passeggiate in spiaggia, i massaggi rilassanti di coppia. [ITA] Lungo la strada che collega Aquileia e Palmanova, due cittadine Patrimonio Unesco, sorge Strassoldo, una graziosa località che fa battere il cuore a chi ama i piccoli borghi storici. Un borgo così bello da essere entrato a far parte del prestigioso club dei Borghi più Belli d’Italia. Questa frazione di Cervignano del Friuli è famosa principalmente per i suoi due castelli e il villaggio medievale sorto attorno ad essi, attraversato da rogge e limpidi corsi d’acqua. I due manieri furono costruiti attorno all’anno Mille a difesa della via Julia Augusta dalla nobile famiglia di origine tedesca che in quel periodo si insediò qui. A Strassoldo abitano ancora oggi i conti che diedero il nome alla località (o viceversa? non si sa...) e che sono proprietari dei castelli da quando la storia ci ha lasciato traccia, il che è un fatto raro nel panorama europeo. In questo antico borgo, da ben 22 anni le primavere e gli autunni sono allietati da suggestive manifestazioni nei castelli, che eccezionalmente aprono le proprie porte ai visitatori e ospitano espositori e artigiani selezionati. Anche l’autunno 2020 vedrà la festa a Strassoldo. Sarà “Magici intrecci autunnali”. Cuore del programma rimarranno artigiani, vivaisti d’eccellenza, suggestivi addobbi autunnali e il fascino antico del sito, mentre nuovo sarà il formato, studiato per garantire la massima sicurezza.

[ENG] Along the way between Aquileia and Palmanova – both listed as UNESCO World Heritage cities – lies a hamlet that will melt the heart of those who love small historical villages. Strassoldo is so pretty as to be listed one of the most beautiful villages by the Borghi più Belli d’Italia club. The village, just outside Cervignano del Friuli, is renowned for its two castles and the medieval hamlet crossed by small canals of fresh clear water. The two manors were built around the year one thousand by a noble family of Germanic origins to defend their property on the Via Julia Augusta. The Strassoldo noble family, who gave the village its name (or was it the other way round?) and have held the castles since records go back, still live there, fact that is quite rare in Europe. Every spring and autumn, for the last 22 years, the two manors have opened their gates to the public and come to life with a uniquely charming event where premier artists and crafts people exhibit and sell their works. In autumn 2020, the festival will once again be held in Strassoldo and dubbed “Magical Autumn Weaves”. During the weekend of 16-18 October 2020, the festival will again be the magical thread that weaves the heritage and landscape of the historical site with the mastery of the exhibitors. It will also be a special occasion to do some Christmas shopping and buy original gifts, at very reasonable prices.

[ITA] Venerdì 16, sabato 17 e domenica 18 ottobre 2020 un filo magico legherà la storia e la natura del luogo con gli espositori. Sarà il momento ideale per fare acquisti natalizi originali, senza per questo spendere cifre esose. L’itinerario si dipanerà fluidamente in parchi e giardini secolari, nelle case degli armigeri, nel Brolo e nella Cancelleria del Castello di Strassoldo di Sopra. L’area della manifestazione sarà molto vasta, per cui si eviteranno assembramenti e saranno garantiti i protocolli di sicurezza. Il week-end propone anche visite guidate per ammirare gli interni del Castello di Strassoldo di Sopra, che saranno abbelliti con addobbi autunnali. L’evento si terrà anche in caso di pioggia.

bitta, calda di sole o algida per il freddo vento di bora, ci si sente al centro della Mitteleuropa: a levante si scorge il campanile della chiesa di San Giorgio a Pirano, in Slovenia, e i promontori della Croazia, a ponente la laguna di Grado e in lontananza i monti del Friuli. Ci si volta e, vicinissimi, ecco la città e il suo lungomare. Da qui il colpo d’occhio è quello che si ha arrivando a Trieste dal mare. I candidi merli del Castello di Miramare voluto da Massimiliano d’Asburgo, il porto vecchio - una città nella città - e il palazzo dell’idroscalo con i Geni alati di pietra lasciano spazio ai palazzi neoclassici, neorinascimentali e liberty edificati dell’aristocrazia triestina. Ecco i mattoni rossi di Palazzo Aedes, l’ipnotica facciata rossa e beige di Palazzo Gopcevich che si riflette sulle acque del Canal Grande, l’elegante cupola del neoclassico Palazzo Carciotti (dalla quale si dice che il greco Carciotti, ricchissimo, scrutasse l’orizzonte per veder arrivare le navi con le sue

merci) e il doppio campanile della Chiesa greco-ortodossa. E poi il teatro Verdi, lo splendido Palazzo del Governo e gli imponenti palazzi di Piazza Unità, che con i suoi 16 mila metri quadri è la più grande piazza d’Europa che si affaccia sul mare. Una quinta più dietro il colle di San Giusto con l’omonimo castello, la Cattedrale e i resti della Tergeste romana. E più dietro ancora il ciglione carsico. Lasciato il molo, la città ci chiama per un buon caffè. Non c’è che l’imbarazzo della scelta, tra piccole torrefazioni e caffè storici come il Tommaseo, il San Marco, il Tergesteo o il Caffè degli Specchi. Per respirare a pieni polmoni l’atmosfera di un tempo, eclettica e multiculturale, che animava Trieste e i caffè caffè letterari frequentati da grandi nomi della letteratura valichiamo la Portizza - l’unica porta sopravvissuta dell’antico Ghetto Ebraico - e arriviamo nella suggestiva Città Vecchia. Qui tra bancarelle di rigattieri e squisiti negozietti, accogliamo i sug-

ground the mountains of Friuli. Looking behind, just there, the bustling city and its historic waterfront. This is the view you enjoy when you approach Trieste by sea. The shimmering white crenelations of the Miramare Castle, commissioned by Maximilian of Habsburg, the old port – a city within the city – and the seaplane base (Palazzo dell’Idroscalo) featuring a winged genius on either end of the facade; and still, the seafront backed by Neoclassical, NeoRenaissance and Art Nouveau buildings built by the wealthy aristocracy of Trieste. Further on, the red brick walls of Palazzo Aedes, the hypnotic-patterned brick-red and cream tiles of the facade of Palazzo Gopcevich reflecting in the water of Canal Grande, the elegant dome of the Neoclassical Palazzo Carciotti (from which apparently the Greek tycoon Carciotti would scan the horizon waiting to see the ships carrying his goods approach the port), and finally the two bell towers of the Greek Orthodox church. And then, Teatro Verdi, the beautiful Palazzo del Governo and the imposing buildings surrounding Piazza Unità, which measuring 16 thousand square metres is the largest square on the seafront in Europe. Behind the square, Colle San Giusto with its castle rising above the old town, the cathedral and the ancient traces of the Roman urban settlement of Tergeste. High above, dominating the city the Karst highlands.

A stroll along the centre and elegant waterfront [ENG] The «nowhereness», a «half-real, half-imagined seaport» This is how Jan Morris, renowned Welsh essayist and travel writer, portrayed the essence of Trieste. Autumn is one of the best seasons to visit the city: the air is crisp and clear, and the bright sunshine caresses the Adriatic Sea which takes on a different and unique shade of blue. This is the season when you can best experience the «Trieste effect», that particular disposition of the soul, that is contemplative and escapes the reins of time and space. And a mere glimpse of the city induces visitors to instinctively travel close and far. There is a particular spot where Trieste never ceases to lend new views and new emotions, the Molo Audace. Sitting on a bollard at the head of the pier, soaking in the warm sun or bracing in the biting chill of the bora wind, you get the feeling of being in the heart of Mitteleuropa: to the east you get a glimpse of the bell tower of the San Giacomo church in Piran, Slovenia, and the capes of Croatia, while to the west amazing views of the Grado Lagoon, and finally, towering in the back-

[ITA] gerimenti di qualche accomodante cameriere che ci fa assaporare ogni volta un’esplosione di gusti: dai delicati gnocchi di susine al tripudio di carni su cui spiccano bolliti, salsicce e crauti, dai pesci dell’Adriatico agli squisiti dolci di derivazione asburgica. Trieste ci invita a vagare senza meta e ci offre come compagni di passeggio illustri scrittori che hanno vissuto in città e che sono stati immortalati nel bronzo a grandezza naturale: in piazza Hortis troviamo Italo Svevo con i suoi scuri baffoni; in via San Nicolò incrociamo Umberto Saba che si stringe nel cappotto con il bavero alzato e che forse ancora rimugina sulla pipa che gli è stata rubata così tante volte da spingere il Comune a togliergliela del tutto; attraversando il ponte di Piazza Ponterosso ci viene incontro un vitale e quasi allegro James Joyce, con paglietta in testa e pince-nez. E su una panchina in piazza della Borsa prendiamo posto accanto a Gabriele D’Annunzio (il vate che molto ha amato Trieste), assorto nella lettura di un libro. Poi torniamo sulle rive. A sera la contemplazione del panorama è impagabile e la nostra bitta è ancora lì.

[ENG] Leaving the pier behind, immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the city and enjoy a nice cup of coffee. You are spoilt by choice as there are tons of small coffee shops and historic cafes. Among many, Caffè Tommaseo, Caffè San Marco, Caffè Tergesteo and Caffè degli Specchi. To experience the eclectic and multicultural atmosphere of the old days – the same one that enlivened Trieste and the literary cafes, favourite hangouts for great artists like, Joyce, Svevo and Saba – simply walk through the Portizza – the only gateway left to the old Hebrew ghetto – and reach the old town (Città Vecchia). Walking along the narrow streets lined by second-hand dealers and little independent shops, step into a local osteria where a welcoming host entices his guests with an explosion of flavours: from the typical “gnocchi di susine” (plum-filled gnocchi ) to lightly salted pork slowly boiled in stock served with sausages and sauerkraut, Adriatic fish dishes and delicious desserts and cakes of the Austrian tradition. The relaxed atmosphere of Trieste invites you to stroll around the city without a precise destination greeted by the life-size bronze statues of illustrious writers who lived in the city: in Piazza Hortis Italo Svevo with his trademark moustache, while Via San Nicolò is home to Umberto Saba depicted wrapped in a long coat, collar turned up high round his ears, perhaps brooding over his pipe, so often stolen that the City Council had it removed altogether. In crossing the Piazza Ponterosso bridge you are met by James Joyce embodied in a lively, jollylooking statue donning a straw boater hat and pince-nez spectacles. Finally, in Piazza della Borsa you can take a rest on a bench next to Gabriele D’Annunzio (the much-loved poet by the Triestines) engrossed in reading a book. After dinner head back to the seafront. The evening-views of the bay are magnificent.

Where Milk and Honey Flow

[ITA] Arrivarono in Italia guidati dall’eroico e leggendario re Alboino. Nel 568 d.C. marciarono dalla Pannonia e valicarono i monti friulani, con l’intento di conquistare l’intera Italia, la terra «famosa per frutti e ricchezze che si estendeva a vista d’occhio» dove sono «fluenti il latte e il miele». Conquistarono buona parte dell’Italia settentrionale, allora provincia dell’Impero Romano d’Oriente, senza trovare particolare resistenza. Scesero poi nell’Italia centrale e meridionale, creando i ducati di Spoleto e Benevento. I Longobardi insediarono il proprio regno sulle macerie dell’Italia romana e governarono su vaste terre fino al 774, quando furono sconfitti e spodestati dai Franchi di Carlo Magno. La prima cittadina in cui si fermarono fu Cividale del Friuli, la romana Forum Iulii, che era stata risparmiata dalle devastazioni barbariche e che per i 206 anni successivi fu la capitale di quel ducato longobardo che corrispondeva più o meno al territorio regionale odierno.

[ENG] The Lombards descended in Italy under their legendary king, Alboin. In 568 AD they marched from Pannonia and crossed the Friulian mountains on their way to conquer the whole of Italy, a land «famous for its fruits and abundance, which extended as far as the eye can see»; a «land of milk and honey». They conquered what is now northern Italy (at the time a province of the Eastern Roman Empire) without facing much resistance. They then descended towards central and southern Italy and founded the duchies of Spoleto and Benevento. The Lombards established their kingdom on the ruins of Roman Italy and ruled over vast areas of the peninsula up to AD 774 when they were defeated by Charlemagne’s Franks. The first town they chose to settle in was Cividale del Friuli the Roman Forum Julii spared from barbarian devastation, which for the following 206 year was to be the capital city of the Lombard duchy.

[ENG] The Lombards left many traces of their presence in Friuli and to visit Cividale del Friuli – listed as a UNESCO World Heritage city in 2011 – is a privileged occasion to learn more about a population portrayed as being tall and having long beards and blond hair. Start your exploration from the majestic Tempietto Longobardo (Lombard Temple) which is decorated with stunning stucco ornaments, an example of the extraordinary artistic height reached, then have a look at the splendid artefacts displayed at the Museo Cristiano di Cividale: Callisto’s “tegurio” (an octagonal aedicule over the baptismal font), the altar commissioned by Ratchis, and many artefacts found in the Lombard necropolis (jewels, buckles and weapons, now housed at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale) which tell us about the customs and traditions of the people that arrived in the region following King Alboin.

[ITA] L’ottava edizione di Romans Langobardorum, la più grande rievocazione storica del periodo longobardo in Italia, prenderà vita nei giorni 16, 17 e 18 ottobre e sarà dedicata agli anni della restaurazione monarchica con Autari. Numerosi rievocatori provenienti dall’Italia e dell’estero faranno rivivere a Romans il mondo dei Longobardi, proponendo tantissime attività adatte a tutte le fasce d’età. Quest’anno sarà richiesta ai visitatori una certa dose di elasticità nell’adattarsi alle norme che verranno adottate per svolgere regolarmente e in sicurezza la manifestazione. Scores of re-enactors from around Italy and overseas will set up camp in Romans to portray the colourful pageant of the Lombards, and offer great moments filled with music, food, and fun activities for all ages. This year, visitors will be asked to strictly follow the anti-Covid-19 rules of conduct to ensure the smooth running of the events. [ITA] I Longobardi lasciarono molti segni del loro passaggio in Friuli. Cividale del Friuli, Patrimonio Unesco dal 2011, è quasi una via d’accesso obbligata per entrare nelle vicende di questo popolo con gli uomini dalla lunga barba, capelli biondi, e alta statura. Si va dal maestoso Tempietto Longobardo con i suoi incantevoli stucchi, che rappresenta l’apice dell’arte longobarda, fino alle splendide testimonianze conservate nel Museo Cristiano di Cividale: il Tegurio del patriarca Callisto e l’Altare del duca Ratchis, passando per gli oggetti rinvenuti nelle necropoli longobarde della regione (gioielli, fibule, armi, …), che ci raccontano gli usi e i costumi delle prime generazioni arrivate in Italia al seguito del leggendario re Alboino ed esposti al Museo Archeologico Nazionale.

Dolci colli Tra colline e poggi

A Landscape of Hills and Rises

[ITA] Lungo la fascia confinante con la Slovenia che da Gorizia sale verso Cormons, tocca Cividale e arriva fino a Tarcento, ci sono colline dai delicati declivi dove la vite coltivata, l’uva prodotta e il vino da esso ottenuto sono elementi indissolubilmente legati alla vita e al paesaggio locale. Qui i colli terrazzati a vigneto sono interrotti solo da boschi ricchi di castagni e querce tra i quali si sparpagliano piccoli borghi, castelli, e pievi. Partiamo da Tarcento e lasciamo i suoi dolci colli lambiti dalle limpide acque del torrente Torre e costellati da ville liberty, per dirigerci verso Faedis. Tra i borghi di Faedis si snoda un itinerario che abbraccia i suggestivi resti dei castelli medievali di Zucco, Cucagna e Soffumbergo, risalenti agli inizi dell’XI e XIII secolo e che nel Quattrocento vennero abbandonati dai nobili che vi risiedevano a favore di più comode e accoglienti ville di pianura.

[ENG] The strip of land along the border with Slovenia, which gradually climbs from Gorizia to the gentle hills of Cormòns, Cividale, and up to Tarcento, offers landscapes where lush vines laden with grapes along with the many excellent wineries shape not only the local sceneries but the life of the people of the region. Here, the undulating slopes of terraced vineyards are interrupted only by patches of chestnuts and oaks, and little villages, castles and rural parish churches that dot the countryside. We start our tour from Tarcento leaving the gentle hills bordered by the clear stream of the Torre River and the views of the Liberty-style villas that dot the slopes, heading towards Faedis. Our itinerary takes us to the ruins of the medieval castles of Zucco, Cucagna, and Soffumbergo, built between the beginning of the eleventh and thirteenth centuries, and mostly abandoned by the nobles who preferred the ease

[ENG] and comfort of their residences in the plains below. In Cividale of the Friuli, “capital” of the Friuli Colli Orientali DOC wine production area, the atmosphere is filled with charisma. Amidst the narrow streets and picturesque little squares there are some gems of fine art from various ages, and the Lombard sites are enlisted as part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Significant evidence of the Lombard period can be found at the Tempietto Longobardo, the Christian Museum of the Cathedral, and at the National Archaeological Museum in Cividale. Geographically located midway between Cividale and Cormòns is Abbazia di Rosazzo, the Benedictine abbey set on top of the namesake hill, surrounded by neatly-tended vineyards and age-old woods. Within the ancient walls, the silence of the cloister next the fortified church dedicated to St. Peter is made more evocative by the delicate scent of dozens of roses that bloom throughout the winter months. From this elevated position you have the feeling of sailing on a sea of green, waves of vineyards stretching into the distance plunging under the surf of roses, and finally the statues standing tall like sailors guarding the walls.

[ITA] A Cividale del Friuli, la “capitale” della zona DOC Friuli Colli Orientali, si respira un’atmosfera carica di suggestioni. La cittadina custodisce importanti tesori artistici di diverse epoche e il suo itinerario longobardo è riconosciuto dall’UNESCO Patrimonio dell’Umanità. Importanti testimonianze sono custodite al Tempietto Lonbogardo, al Museo Cristiano del Duomo e al Museo Archeologico Nazionale. A metà strada tra Cividale e Cormons troviamo l’Abbazia benedettina di Rosazzo, che dalla sommità dell’omonimo colle veglia su pendii coltivati a vigneto e su antichi boschi. Tra le secolari mura, il silenzio nel chiostro della chiesa fortificata dedicata a San Pietro è addolcito dal profumo sprigionato da decine e decine di piante di rose che fioriscono anche in inverno. Dall’alto del colle pare di stare al timone di una nave che veleggia in un verde mare, in cui le onde sono le ordinate file dei vigneti, la spuma i tenui colori dei roseti e i marinai le statue che torreggiano sulla cinta. Il toponimo Rosazzo torna anche in un’altra peculiarità dei Colli Orientali, che si riscontra a Corno di Rosazzo.

Faedis, Castello di Zucco

[ITA] In questa località ogni strada è come se avesse nome e cognome: il primo è il nome della via, il secondo il nome di uno dei maggiori vitigni del mondo, a indicare la vocazione vinicola della cittadina. Non distante dall’Abbazia di Rosazzo trova spazio il Bosco Romagno. Fra querce, aceri e castagni, con un po’ di pazienza e tanto silenzio non è difficile incontrare caprioli, scoiattoli, volpi e tassi: un’ottima compagnia durante le passeggiate! La strada che si dirige verso Cormons, oggi “capitale” della zona DOC Collio (una delle prime nate in Italia), è in bilico tra collina e pianura. La cittadina sorge ai piedi del monte Quarin ed è stata per secoli - fino al 1947 - il centro nevralgico di un territorio ben più vasto dell’attuale Collio, che racchiudeva in un’unica entità sia il Collio italiano che lo sloveno Brda e che era il frutteto e il vigneto della Mitteleuropa, dove si producevano vino e ciliegie in grandi quantità, ma anche susine, fichi e verdure destinati ai mercati del nord. Questo excursus tra colline e poggi si conclude a nord di Gorizia, dove c’è un’altura che rischia di restare, a torto, fuori dai circuiti turistici. È Oslavia, che con un colle vestito di bianco silenziosamente ricorda come la follia degli uomini abbia assunto connotati fratricidi e dove ad ogni vespro la campana “chiara” rintocca in onore dei caduti. Oslavia ospita l’omonimo sacrario militare, un imponente e candido monumento dalla forma cilindrica che raccoglie le spoglie di 57.741 caduti italiani ed austriaci, di cui circa 36.000 ignoti, morti nelle battaglie di Gorizia della Prima Guerra Mondiale. Quando si visita il sacrario ci si accorge di come la dolcezza del paesaggio pare attenuare la crudeltà dei ricordi che sono racchiusi nel bianco sepolcro.

Cormons, piazza XXIV Maggio

[ENG] The toponym Rosazzo is also found in the name of a village further down the Collio Orientali hills, Corno di Rosazzo. Every street name of the village includes a second name recalling the main grape varieties of the world as if to highlight the wine-making heritage of the area. Located just a short drive away from Abbazia di Rosazzo is Bosco Romagno (Romagno Woods). Here you are surrounded by majestic oaks, maples and chestnut trees, and with a little patience and quiet you can spot various animals including deer, squirrels, foxes, and badgers, which provide good company on your walks! The road that winds its way down towards Cormòns, which is considered the “capital” of the Collio DOC wine appellation (one of the first designated in Italy) straddles the hills and the plain. The little town lies at the foot of Mount Quarin and for many centuries – up until 1947 – it was the main centre of a rather vast district, which included the area which now is known as Brda, in Slovenia, alongside the Italian Collio. It was considered the orchard and vineyard of Mitteleuropa, which produced great quantities of wine, cherries, as well as damsons, figs, and vegetables to be sold on the markets of northern Europe. This brief tour along the hills and rises finishes just north of Gorizia, where there is a rise which somehow strangely and unjustly is not always included in the usual tourist circuit. Oslavia, a low hill crowned by a round white monument, is a silent reminder of the folly of death and destruction which here reached the point of fratricide. Every evening the monument bell tolls for the fallen of the First World War. The Oslavia War Memorial contains the remains of 57,741 Italian and Austrian soldiers – 36,000 of which unknown – who fell on the battlefields of Gorizia during the Great War. When you visit the War Memorial you appreciate how the tranquil, green landscape mitigates the brutality of the collective memories enshrined in the white sepulchre.

A Great Vineyard

[ITA] Il Friuli Venezia Giulia è un grande vigneto adagiato tra monti e mare. Cinta dalle Alpi che la riparano dai venti freddi del nord e lambita dal mare e dalle lagune, la regione è sfiorata da venti caldi e secchi che soffiano da sud e sferzata da una prepotente bora da levante; è baciata dal sole e bagnata da abbondanti precipitazioni. Nelle zone pedemontane e in quelle collinari e carsiche a ridosso del confine sloveno, dove la qualità dei prodotti premia le più difficili condizioni di produzione, troviamo filari aggrappati ai versanti; le vigne si dispiegano invece nella pianura alluvionale, dove si ottiene la maggior quantità di uve, e si adagiano fino alla costa nella zona litoranea mitigata dal mare. In questo paesaggio eterogeneo sono circa 1500 le aziende che producono vini eccellenti, e ogni anni sono circa 80 milioni le bottiglie che vengono colmate con vini rossi gustosi e bianchi tra i migliori al mondo. Non è solo la produzione vinicola ad essere trainante in regione, ma anche l’enoturismo: da una ricerca condotta lo scorso anno da Vinitaly, infatti, il Friuli Venezia Giulia si piazza tra le prime cinque regioni italiane ambite dagli enoturisti.

[ENG] Friuli Venezia Giulia is a vast vineyard that lies gracefully between the mountains and the sea, crowned by the Alps that shield it from the cold winds that blow from the north and lapped by the sea and lagoons. This land is lightly brushed by the warm dry breezes from the south and whipped by the strong gusts of Bora wind from the east; it enjoys lots of warm sunshine and is replenished by abundant rains. On the steeper hill slopes and on those of the Carso just next to the Slovenian border – where the quality of the wines is the reward for such difficult conditions – the vineyards literally cling to the slope; down below instead, the vineyards spread out over the alluvial plain up to the coast where they are aired by the salty sea breeze, and yield a larger amount of grapes. In this pleasantly varied landscape, there are some 1500 wineries that produce a range of exceptional wines, ranging from the whites that are amongst the best in the world and the very particular red wines, yielding some 80 million bottles a year. It is not only the wine making industry that is the driving force behind the good results of the region, interestingly a survey conducted by Vinitaly revealed that Friuli Venezia Giulia is one of the five leading regions for wine tourism in Italy.

[ENG] It is exactly with wine tourists and foodies in mind that several food and wine itineraries have been imagined to highlight the excellent local products and wines, along a route that touches some of the most extraordinary sites chosen for their architectural and historical beauty, and interesting landscapes: The Wine and Dine Route. In particular, the six different itineraries that run from the mountains to the coast across the hills and the plains, showcase a mix of cultures, landscapes, and local specialities allowing tourists to learn more about the producers and their products. Six different food and wine experiences that celebrate the produce and ingredients of the region as well as the heritage, traditions and daily life. And there is more: many wine producers of Friuli Venezia Giulia together with Promoturismo FVG the regional tourism promotion agency, and Movimento Turismo del Vino have created new food and wine experiences that take tourists into the vineyards and verdant fields in compliance with the Covid-19 social distancing measures. Depending on the season there is a full calendar of vineyard picnics, tours, walks, and meditation sessions in the vines and olive groves, as well as mountain hikes and lagoon walks. And still, tours and tastings at some local wineries, distilleries, and breweries which also become unusual venues of concerts, performances and art exhibitions. Tra pietre e mare Il Carso

A Landscape of Rocks and Sea The Carso

[ITA] Se pensate al Carso probabilmente vi vengono in mente le rocce e la Grande Guerra. Eppure il Carso è molto, molto di più. Bellezze naturalistiche e bontà enogastronomiche pregiate. Questo è quanto offre il Carso, che cinge in un abbraccio protettivo il golfo di Trieste, aprendosi all’Europa continentale verso nord e scendendo dolcemente verso le marne dell’Istria. L’altopiano carsico, con la sua landa battuta dal vento di Bora, è un altopiano che parte dalle pendici delle Alpi Giulie e arriva fino al mare Adriatico, in Istria, occupando in Italia le provincie di Gorizia e Trieste e parte di Slovenia e Croazia. Ma l’altopiano del Carso con le sue cime e le sue doline è anche un esempio lampante di nicchie ecologiche e microclimi. Qui potete fermarvi a godere la tanto aspra quanto affascinante terra carsica, che si protende verso l’azzurro del mare, oltre le viti che affondano tra le bianche rocce calcaree e la terra di colore rosso intenso. Questo paesaggio dall’aspetto brullo, spazzato dalle raffiche di bora e scavato dall’acqua, ha un clima quasi continentale, con inverni rigidi ed estati calde, ma notti sempre fresche. Spostandoci nella zona della Val Rosandra troviamo terreni che dona-

[ENG] When you hear or read the word Carso, you immediately associate it with a barren landscape and the Great War. And Carso is much more that this. Way more. Natural beauties and fine food and wine delicatessen. This is what the Karst has to offer. A territory that protectively encloses the Gulf of Trieste while opening towards continental Europe in the north and gently sloping towards the marly white lands of Istria. The Carso plateau characterised by barren landscapes swept by strong Bora wind, stretches from the edge of the Julian Alps to the Adriatic Sea in Istria occupying quite a bit of the areas around Gorizia and Trieste, as well as Slovenia and Croatia. The Karst highlands with its peaks and doline – shallow usually funnel-shaped depressions of the ground surface – is the clear example of environmental niches and microclimates. Here you can stop and take in incredible views of the Karst land, as captivating as it is harsh, that stretches down to the sea boasting sturdy vines rooted in earthy red soil amidst white limestone rocks. This barren landscape swept by gusts of Bora wind and carved by water has a climate of the continental type, with harsh winters, hot summers and cool nights.

[ITA] no alla roccia striature colorate e scendendo lungo la breccia della valle sentiremo il clima farsi sempre più mediterraneo. Il Carso isontino invece è un altopiano costellato da bassi colli che da Monfalcone vanno verso Redipuglia e, seguendo il coso dell’Isonzo, fino alla Slovenia. Qui l’acqua viene risucchiata dal terreno carsico, che è particolarmente permeabile ed è in grado addirittura di far svuotare periodicamente un lago, quello di Doberdò. Tutto attorno a Trieste e Monfalcone, in uno spazio relativamente ristretto troviamo zone di altissima naturalità, molte delle quali premiate con la tutela ambientale come Riserve Naturali Regionali: ben cinque, la Val Rosandra, il Monte Lanaro, il Monte Orsario, le Falesie di Duino e la riserva regionale dei laghi di Doberdò e Pietrarossa, senza contare la Riserva Marittima di Miramare. Ricco di grotte, pietre, pascoli ed erbe profumate, il Carso è una terra di agricoltori e allevatori dove il confine linguistico tra italiano e sloveno si fa molto sottile, se non addirittura inesistente. Un interminabile e intrecciato reticolo di muri a secco delimita le proprietà e la viabilità che collega i piccoli e caratteristici paesi carsici. Qui, gli antichi pozzi, le case con i portali di pietra e i portoni di legno aperti sui cortili, le stradine e le raccolte piazzette danno la sensazione che il tempo si sia fermato.

[ENG] As you move towards the Val Rosandra area, the rocks have streaks of colour through them, and descending along the valley floor the climate turns more and more Mediterranean. The Carso area near Gorizia, known as Carso Isontino, features several gently rolling hills which run from Monfalcone to Redipuglia, and following the course of the River Isonzo extend into the Slovenian territory. Here the water drains through the karst surface which is particularly permeable and can periodically drain a whole lake (the Doberdò Lake). Surrounding Trieste and Monfalcone, within a relatively small area there are several high naturality areas, many of which have deserved the recognition of Regional Nature Reserves: there are five renown reserves: Val Rosandra, Monte Lanaro, Monte Orsario, the Falesie in Duino and the Doberdò and Pietrarossa lakes nature reserve, not to count the Marittima of Miramare. This land riddled by caves, covered by pastures and stubble, and tamed by tenacious farmers, lies where the linguistic border between Italian and Slovenian is not completely defined. The intricate network of dry stonewalls bordering the fields and flanking the narrow roads that connect the hamlets and villages of the Carso conveys a sense of old rurality. The age-old wells, the typical houses, the stone entrance gates with massive wooden doors that open up to well appointed courtyards, the winding roads and little squares, all give you the feeling that time has stopped. [ITA] Nei piccoli borghi del Carso, dove sono ancora vive la vocazione contadina e le tradizioni locali, si può assaporare la fusione dei sapori italiani, sloveni, austriaci e ungheresi che hanno fatto la storia di questi luoghi. Nel territorio carsico caratteriz zato dalla tipica terra rossa, negli appez zamenti ondulati strappati alle pietre e nei pàstini (i terraz zamenti scoscesi verso il mare) si coltivano antichi vitigni che oggi donano vini eccellenti. Le loro caratteristiche variano a seconda che la vite sia coltivata nell’entroterra oppure lungo la fascia litoranea, dove si producono vini con un grado alcolico più elevato e minore acidità. Portabandiera dell’enologia carsica sono i rossi Terrano (il vino principe di queste terre, definito sangue del Carso per la sua corposità e il suo intenso colore) e Refosco d’Istria e, per i bianchi, la Vitovska (un vino secco e fresco) e la Malvasia, che ben si accompagna ai piatti di pesce.

[ENG] In villages of the Carso, where life is rural and traditions are proudly followed, you can enjoy a very interesting mix of Italian, Slovenian, Austrian and Hungarian flavours. You can spot manly little vineyards planted in patches of red soil or following the contour lines of the rocky terrain, or even vineyards perched on narrow terraces dropping toward the sea. All these old vineyards produce excellent wines. The characteristics of the wines change depending on where the grapes are grown. Vineyards near the coast produce stronger wines with a less tangy mouthfeel. The flagship red wines of the Carso are Terrano (the stern bodied, colour and flavour-full Terrano – also said to be the blood of the Carso) and Refosco d’Istria while the dry fresh Vitovska and Malvasia are white wines that complement fish dishes. [ITA] Qui si alleva l’agnello istriano e si producono formaggi provenienti da animali nutriti con la ricca flora, come il Tabor, il Monte Re o il Mlet (il formaggio al pepe). Si possono assaporare il saporito prosciutto crudo del Carso (con quel suo gusto deciso, forte e aromatico acquisito in almeno un anno di stagionatura naturale) e gli insaccati prodotti sapientemente da tante aziende familiari. E mentre dalle arnie si estrae il profumato miele locale, in piccoli frantoi tradizionali sgorga l’olio del Carso. La cucina carsolina è stagionale, caratteriz zata da erbe selvatiche e frutta. La selvaggina e l’agnello si preparano in mille modi e quando la bora, gelida, sferza il Carso, nei paioli sobbollono minestroni e zuppe. Tra questi la jota, il minestrone di crauti o rape, patate e fagioli tipico di queste zone. Per ogni festività c’è un dolce speciale, come gli štruklji (strudel di noci avvolti in una tela e bolliti), lo strudel, la putizza e il presnitz (gli ultimi due sono rotoli di pasta – lievitata e non - ripieni di noci, mandorle, uvetta e pinoli a forma di chiocciola). Per assaggiare la vera anima boema del Carso, immancabili sono i gnochi de susini (gli gnocchi di susine), grandi gnocchi a base di patate e farina farciti con una mez za prugna snocciolata, conditi con burro fuso e pangrattato rosolati

con zucchero e cannella. Sono serviti come primo piatto, come dessert o come piatto unico. Il nostro consiglio è di perdervi tra le stradine cinte dai muretti a secco di questo altipiano sospeso sul mare Adriatico e assaporarne i gusti. Tra le tante prelibatez ze che potete gustare sul Carso, vi suggeriamo di non farvi sfuggire un piatto tradizionale che unisce le molte anime di questo territorio e racchiude in sé elementi della cucina istriana e italiana e ha un nome che riporta all’Austria, lo strucolo in straza. Il suo nome è un esempio di contaminazione tra le diverse culture di confine: strucolo è l’italianiz zazione della parola slovena štrukelj, a sua volta traduzione del tedesco strudel. La somiglianza con il noto dolce di mele non sta solamente nel nome ma anche nella forma; lo strucolo infatti è un rotolo di pasta, spalmata di ripieno, arrotolata su sé stessa fino a formare un cilindro. Le differenze però sono molte; prima fra tutti la varietà del ripieno, che nello strucolo varia tra il salato (ricotta e formaggio, verdure o carne) e il dolce (farcito con frutta fresca, frutta secca o cioccolato), e il metodo di cottura. Lo strucolo, farcito e insaporito, viene arrotolato e chiuso nella straza, il canovaccio, e immerso in acqua bollente. Affettato e insaporito da burro e, nella versione dolce, da zucchero e cannella, lo strucolo in straza ci parla di gusti di confine e di tante varianti quante sono le famiglie sul territorio.

The prosciutto del Carso (with its no-nonsense flavour and intense aroma, acquired after at least one year of ageing) and other cured meats are skilfully produced by many family-run farms so you can be assured that wherever you go you can enjoy some. The Carso also offers wonderfully scented honeys and extra virgin olive oils. The local cuisine is seasonal and often features wild herbs and fruit. Game and lamb are prepared in many different ways, and in winter, when the freezing cold gales of Bora sweep across the Carso, you will always have a pot of hearty soup bubbling away on the stove. Among all the others, perhaps jota - sauerkraut, beans and potato soup - is the most typical of the area. For each festivity there is a special sweet treat, for example: štruklji – a strudel-like pastry with filling of nuts and cooked in boiling water – traditional strudel, putizza and presnitz (snail rolled leavened cake filled with nuts, raisins and liqueur). To taste the Boehemian character of the Carso you must try gnochi de susini – potato gnocchi filled with sweet plums – tossed in melted butter and breadcrumbs and sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon. This dish can be served as a main course, first course or as a dessert.

We suggest you roam the little roads flanked by dry stone walls that criss-the Carso highlands high above the Adriatic sea and enjoy the local specialities. Among the many delicacies you can find in the area we highly recommend tasting a traditional dish that combines the many souls of the district, that of the Istrian and Italian cuisines, and elements of the Austrian heritage in its name: we are talking about the strucolo in straza (poached strudel). The name of this delicacy is a clear example of the contamination between the cultures on the border: strucolo is the Italian sounding version of the Slovenian word štrukelj, which in turn derives from the German strudel. Similarities do not end with the name; the shape of the strucolo is a roll, with a filling, just like a strudel. There are, however many little differences. First of all the type of filling; the strucolo can have either a savoury filling (ricotta cheese, vegetables, or meat) or a sweet filling (fresh fruit, dry fruit, or chocolate). Another difference is the way they are cooked. The strucolo, is filled, wrapped in a cloth, straza, and plunged into boiling water. Once cooked, the strucolo is cut into slices and sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon for the sweet version. Strucolo epitomises the idea of flavours on the borders, of lots of differences and lots of things in common.

Un viaggio alla scoperta dei grani antichi [ITA] Dal 16 ottobre al 1. novembre 2020 torna Sapori del Carso – Okusi Krasa, la gustosissima manifestazione che tutela e promuove i sapori della tradizione, la memoria delle ricette tradizionali e i prodotti locali del Carso e nel contempo offre un’indimenticabile esperienza culinaria. L’edizione 2020 si svolgerà in un contesto nuovo, ma l’impegno per aumentare la riconoscibilità delle eccellenze enogastronomiche locali rimane intatto. L’obiettivo è, come sempre, quello di raccontare - anche a chi viene da lontano - il Carso nel suo complesso, con la storia, la cultura, i sapori, i prodotti e la natura unica. Il filo conduttore di questa 19a edizione saranno quei grani antichi che trovano il loro spazio in innumerevoli ricette della tradizione carsolina e che negli ultimi decenni erano stati un po’ dimenticati a favore dei grani di più ampia diffusione. I ristoratori, le panetterie e pasticcerie aderenti all’iniziativa celebreranno questa ricorrenza con menù e ricette a tema che avranno come protagonisti grano saraceno, farro, miglio, orzo, e altri cereali. A Great Occasion to Discover the Ancient Grains [ENG] The Sapori del Carso - Okusi Krasa food festival returns from 16th October to 1st November 2020. The festival is a celebration of traditional food, old folk recipes, and the local produce of the Carso highlands, which promises an unforgettable culinary experience. The 2020 edition of the Sapori del Carso festival will take place in new and safe ways, but the dedication to properly showcase the many food and wine delicacies the region has to offer, has remained just the same. The goal is, as always, to introduce the Carso plateau to the newcomers in all its quintessence, through its particular heritage, culture, flavours, specialities, and distinctive natural surroundings. The common thread of the 19th edition of this food and wine festival is to rediscover the ancient grains that traditionally were essential ingredients in the cuisine of the Carso highlands and which have been somewhat forgotten in favour of more widespread modern wheat. The bakery patisseries and restaurants taking part in the festival will be serving baked goods and culinary delights specially designed for the occasion, using buckwheat, spelt, millet, barley, and other grains. A wide range of wines, cheeses, cured meats, extra virgin olive oil and honey, along

with special coffee blends, chocolate and cakes produced in the Karst area, will be available at the “Angolo del prodotto tipico” sales points located in the restaurants, cafés and shops adhering to the festival, while the local bakeries and patisseries will prepare delicious traditional breads and cakes. The Carso, and in particular the area around Duino Aurisina, offers lots of options for sport and outdoor activities on its many paths – which are accessible all year round – amid unspoilt nature. In the area there are several associations that organise sports events, and the Duino Aurisina Town Council supports a variety of initiatives to promote running, walking, bicycle riding and other outdoor sports, as well as the places where these activities take place.

The Duino Cliffs Nature Reserve

The Duino Cliffs Regional Nature Reserve covers an area that includes the steep, high limestone cliffs and the rocky shores below them. The area features great biodiversity and is home to a variety of Central European, Illyrian-Balkan, and Mediterranean plant and animal species. Along the cliffs, between the Duino Castle and Sistiana, runs the Rilke Walk, for where you can enjoy vast views of the Gulf of Trieste, spanning from the Isonzo River mouth to Punta Salvore (Rt Savudrija) in Croatia. Kohišče Cross Country Walk

Saturday 24th October Duino Aurisina will open its doors to visitors who want to discover the locality and the many local delicacies. The Kohišče Cross Country Walk will take the participants on a pleasantly characteristic journey into the food and wine culture and heritage of the Carso amid wonderful landscapes. Along the walk there will be several kiosks where taste the specialities of the place and learn about the local flora and fauna from the experts. La Riserva naturale regionale delle Falesie di Duino si estende lungo un’alta e ripida costiera calcarea e la fascia di mare che la bagna. Qui si riscontra così un elevato grado di biodiversità e vivono specie vegetali e animali centroeuropee, illirico-balcaniche e mediterranee. [ITA] Chi pensa a Monfalcone come alla città dei cantieri navali e alle grandi navi da crociera che periodicamente si sollevano dal mare resterà stupito nel vedere quali altre interessanti attrattive offre la cittadina. Stavolta vi presentiamo il Nordic Walking Park Monfalcone, un luogo dove natura, storia e sport si fondono. Il parco è un vero e proprio impianto sportivo all’aria aperta che offre percorsi certificati per la pratica agonistica della camminata nordica, ma adatti anche a chi questo sport lo pratica a livello amatoriale.

Here is one of the many options: the Nordic Walking Park Monfalcone, where nature, history and sport blend to offer a unique experience.

What exactly is Nordic walking?

Il nordic walking è un’attività sportiva completa che allena contemporaneamente, quando si applica la tecnica corretta, sia il sistema cardiocircolatorio sia la quasi totalità della muscolatura del corpo. Alla camminata naturale si aggiunge l’uso di due appositi bastoncini che danno una vera e propria spinta al movimento e la velocità della camminata aumenta facilmente. Questa disciplina è adatta a tutti, si pratica all’aria aperta tutto l’anno e offre un modo facile, poco costoso e divertente per gustare uno stile di vita sano e attivo.

Nordic Walking is a complete exercise solution, which with the correct technique trains all the important muscles as well as the cardiovascular system. Using the walking pole correctly makes it easier to push forwards increasing the speed of the walk. This outdoor activity is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels. It can be done all year round, it is inexpensive and a good way to enjoy a healthy, active life.

[ENG] The park was designed for outdoor activities, and it also boasts a certified competitive Nordic Walking trail, which, however, is also suitable for beginners. The four trails that wind through the Nordic Walking Park Monfalcone each cover a particular area of the Karst behind the city, following the already existing paths. The trails offer different levels of difficulty and length to suit most walkers and are connected, so you can choose various starting and finishing points. The trails are marked and very well maintained as required by the standards set by the Italian Nordic Walking School, allowing the park to become part of a growing network of certified sited for this activity. The open-air museum of the Great War is located just behind the old town centre of Monfalcone and can easily be reached from the top of Corso del Popolo and from Viale San Marco. Its 7.7 kilometres wind through pinewoods and open patches of land that offer wide views of the Gulf of Trieste, touch sites connected to the Great War included in the openair museum, and reach the Rocca (the ancient fortress), the iconic symbol of the city. The Percorso dei Castellieri (Hillforts Trail) with its 4.6 kilometres climbs up to the Rocca and the western slopes, then continues on the southern slopes to reach the Forcate and Gradiscata hillforts. The theme of the 8.7 kilometre long trail is water, surface water bodies that are a rarity for the Karst environment. The trail follows the water draining from the Pietrarossa Lake to find its way to the sea through the “palude di Sablici” marsh, the Locavaz canal down to the Timavo River. The Lago di Pietrarossa Trail starts at the Pietrarossa visitors’ centre and runs through shady patches of vegetation and open meadows surrounding the land.

[ITA] I quattro itinerari che si snodano nel Nordic Walking Park Monfalcone sono legati ognuno a un ambito particolare del Carso monfalconese e sono stati tracciati seguendo la viabilità e la sentieristica già esistente. Sono diversi per lunghezza, dislivello e difficoltà, ma con dei tratti di raccordo che permettono di sfruttare punti di partenza e arrivo differenti. Grazie alla segnaletica che indica i percorsi, che è quella utilizzata negli altri parchi italiani certificati dalla Scuola Italiana Nordic walking, il parco si inserisce nella rete di parchi che si sta espandendo nella penisola. Il percorso della Grande Guerra è quello più a ridosso del centro cittadino (è accessibile alla fine di corso del Popolo e da viale San Marco); i suoi 7,7 chilometri si snodano tra pinete e ampi panorami sul golfo di Trieste, attraversano luoghi di grande interesse storico in collegamento diretto con il Parco tematico della Grande Guerra e aggirano la Rocca, simbolo della città. Il percorso dei Castellieri, di 4,6 chilometri, sale verso la Rocca e le alture a ovest, procedendo alle pendici meridionali dei rilievi delle Forcate e della Gradiscata, sedi di antichi castellieri. Sono le acque di superficie presenti sul Carso di Monfalcone, una rarità in un ambiente carsico, il tema attorno al quale ruotano gli 8,7 chilometri del terzo percorso, quello delle acque carsiche, che segue le acque che dal lago di Pietrarossa defluiscono verso il mare, attraversando la “palude di Sablici” fino al canale Locavaz e si congiungono con quelle del Timavo. Parte invece dal centro visite di Pietrarossa e si snoda lungo 3,6 chilometri interamente pianeggianti e ombreggiati, il percorso del lago di Pietrarossa.

Inondati dalla luce [ITA] Acqua, lingue di sabbia, canneti, vento e silenzio. Sono gli elementi che connotano la laguna di Marano e Grado, un paesaggio naturale dominato dagli elementi naturali dove è ancora possibile rallentare e godersi il ritmo di vita scandito dall’acqua. Non è il mare degli scogli, della velocità o del profondo blu ma è uno spazio inondato di luce, più che di mare, che vi si muove lento riflettendo i mutamenti del cielo e delle stagioni. Alta e bassa marea si alternano garantendo un costante ricambio dell’acqua che, mescolandosi con quella dolce dei

Amidst the Lagoon Flooded with Light

[ENG] Water, strips of sand, cane thickets, a gentle breeze, and silence. These are the elements that better describe the Marano and Grado Lagoon; an unspoilt natural landscape where it is still possible to slow down and get in tune with the rhythms of the tides. It is not the dramatic coastline, with cliffs, rock-lined beaches and deep blue water, but the environment is equally beautiful. Flooded with light the surface of the slow-flowing water reflects the changing sky throughout the seasons. Ebb and flow mingle into each other allowing the seawater and the fresh water from the rivers to blend together and create an ideal habitat for countless species of plants and animals.

Laguna di Marano e Grado

[ITA] fiumi, crea un ambiente favorevole alla vita di un gran numero di piante e animali. Ernest Hemingway fu sedotto dalla laguna di Marano. La visitò in più occasioni e sostenne di trovarsi a suo agio tra i canneti e i canali. Forse gli ricordavano la sua Florida. Nel romanzo Di là dal fiume e tra gli alberi raccontò di queste terre, ispirato dagli scorci della laguna di Caorle e quella di Marano. La laguna di Grado incantò Pier Paolo Pasolini, lo scrittore e regista, che la scoprì nel 1968 grazie al suo amico pittore Giuseppe Zigaina. Durante un giro in barca i due si fermarono a Mota Safòn, un isolotto vicino a Porto Buso, al limitare delle lagune di Grado e Marano, e fu amore a prima vista. Quel casone piantato su un ciuffo d’erbe in mezzo alla laguna, circondato dall’acqua, isolato e fuori dal mondo rapì

il regista. Tanto che ambientò qui alcune scene di Medea, il suo film con Maria Callas. Biagio Marin, il poeta di Grado candidato al premio Nobel per la letteratura, era invece di casa in laguna. E proprio sulla sua isola natale e sul mare che la cinge scrisse versi suggestivi. Un’escursione in laguna non lascia indifferenti: si può godere dell’aspetto estetico o di quello naturalistico - è pur sempre la zona umida più a nord del Mediterraneo e paradiso per il birdwatching -, si può compiere un suggestivo pellegrinaggio in battello al santuario di Barbana o dedicarsi all’aspetto più squisitamente gastronomico nei ristoranti della zona. Non ultimo, in laguna si possono rivivere le suggestioni evocate da grandi scrittori e intellettuali prima di noi.

[ENG] Ernest Hemingway, for one, was seduced by Marano Lagoon. He spent time in the lagoon on several occasions and declared he felt at home amidst the canals and reeds. Perhaps they reminded him of his home, Florida. The landscapes of Marano and Caorle Lagoons were vividly portrayed by Hemingway in his Across the River and Into the Trees. Grado Lagoon enchanted the Italian writer and film director, Pier Paolo Pasolini, who first visited it in 1968 thanks his friend, the painter Giuseppe Zigaina. Sailing off the coast of Grado they stopped on a small island near Porto Buso on the edge of the Grado and Marano Lagoon, known as Mota Safòn. It was love at first sight for Pasolini. The casone – white-thatched fisherman’s cottage – sitting a patch of grass surrounded by water, in the middle of nowhere, enraptured his imagination. So much so, that he used it as

the setting for part of the filming of his Medea, featuring Maria Callas. The poet, Biagio Marin, nominated for Nobel Prize in Literature, was inspired by the sea and lagoon surrounding his native Grado for his fine verses. A boat trip on the lagoon provides an experience that is difficult to forget, both for the beauty and wild charm of its nature. The most northerly wetland area of the Mediterranean Sea and a true bird watching paradise, the lagoon definitely is worth a trip. The options range from visiting the suggestive Franciscan sanctuary, on the Island of Barbana, to exploring various restaurants of the area for a unique gourmet experience. And last but not least the lagoon offers us the same suggestions and fascination great artists, writers and intellectuals, before us, so much loved.
