English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS)
Description: Teachers will participate in a hands‐on training using the ELPS Academy Linguistic Instructional Alignment Guide to become familiar with performance‐based activities that support listening, speaking, reading, and writing. College and Career Readiness Standards will also be discussed. Proficiency level descriptors and suggested teacher behaviors for each level will be discussed and participants will practice deciding on strategies to implement for a mock student. Description: This presentation encourages AVID Elective teachers, Site Team members, and AVID Coordinators to utilize students’ social media skills as a way to build community beyond the school site while integrating WICOR strategies and college readiness skills. 21st century tools such as Edmodo, Google Education, and Twitter provide extensions of the traditional classroom allowing students and teachers access to community resources and a global audience. Description: This training includes background theory and research supporting Thinking Maps, information about how the maps are different from graphic organizers, and defining explanations about each of the 8 Thinking Maps.
