February 13th Opens the Window for Collecting TELPAS Writing Samples TELPAS writing samples should be taken from authentic classroom activities grounded in your content area TEKS and ELPS. Unlike STAAR writing the TELPAS writing sample does not come from one specific prompt on a designated date. Writing samples should be collected throughout the writing window from the routine academic writing you are doing in your classroom. The classroom teacher is actually the first rater of the student’s writing because they decide what writing sample to submit.
Three ?s to ask about your students’ samples:
1. 2.
How do I know which writing sample to submit? • Is this writing sample a good example of how this particular ELL student writes in my classroom? ▷▷ If the answer is yes, then this is a good sample to submit for the collection. ▷▷ If the answer is no, then do not submit the sample for this student and evaluate the writing they do later in the writing window. • Hint: If your student is a beginner, wait until the end of the window to collect the sample. You want to give the student as much time as possible to acquire the language. • Students who are capable of expressing themselves in English in a detailed, extended way should do so. Do not include brief responses from students who know enough English to respond to writing tasks in extended ways. Did the student write enough for the sample to be rated? • Does this writing sample represent the amount of writing the student normally produces? ▷▷ Hint: Consider the students’ English-language proficiency levels in determining whether papers are too brief to be included. What is not an acceptable paper to be rated? • Do not submit papers containing copied language. ▷▷ Hint: If the student has recently arrived they may copy what they can find on the walls of your room etc. The rater will realize this is a characteristic of a Newcomer and rate them accordingly. • Papers in which a student relies heavily on resources (dictionary, thesaurus, etc.) ▷▷ Hint: Note the word heavily which means more than they normally do. If your students routinely use dictionaries and/or a thesaurus, it is acceptable. • Papers showing teacher comments and corrections. ▷▷ Hint: If you would like to use a paper for a grade and turn it in to be rated for TELPAS please make a copy. Turn the original in for rating and grade the copy. • Worksheets and question-answer assignments • Papers that have been polished with help from peers or teachers • Papers written primarily in a student’s native language • Papers that are brief, incomplete, or rushed ▷▷ Hint: A TELPAS writing sample does not have to be completed in one writing session. If you routinely allow an ELL student extra time to complete a writing assignment, that assignment is eligible for rating.

Classroom Accommodations and the Link to Language and Vocabulary Supports and Content Supports Classroom Accommodation The teacher introduces a new book to a struggling reader prior to reading it aloud or independent reading. The topics discussed might include major concepts, difficult words, setting, characters, or prior knowledge of the subject. Using a dictionary or thesaurus, the teacher points out the meaning or synonym of a word. The teacher isolates specific information to focus the student on the core concept being taught. The teacher acts out or has the students role-play newly introduced vocabulary or difficult concepts. The teacher simplifies difficult vocabulary and then reformats complex word problems by bulleting or spacing out each step required to solve the problem. The teacher provides the student with a specific supplemental aid (e.g., chart, table, graph, checklist, map, timeline) applicable to the question being posed, the assignment, or the task. The student receives reading support. The teacher provides the formula(s) that is needed to solve a problem. The teacher provides visual aids (e.g., demonstrations, photographs, art) to identify people and/or places. The teacher provides visual aids (e.g., demonstrations, photographs, art) to define or clarify vocabulary. During classroom discussions, the teacher clarifies or rewords complex text or questions using simpler language. The teacher directs the student (e.g., highlight, bold, point to, flag the information) to the specific part(s) of the selection, diagram, map, or figure that is being discussed. The teacher presents parts of a complex concept one at a time.
