A Letter of Introduction Dear Educators: It is with honor and great pleasure that I greet you as the new Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction for Garland ISD. GISD has enjoyed success as a leader among DFW area school districts. This success could not have materialized by accident. Rather, it is the result of the hard work of, dedication of, and partnerships between staff, teachers, administrators, and the most important stakeholders in the equation, the students. I appreciate the opportunity to become a member of this educational family. I have been privileged to spend 16 wonderful years working with students, teachers, and administrators at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. The first nine years I served as a high school math and physics teacher, instructional coach, and curriculum specialist in several districts, including the Dallas Independent School District. For the last seven years, I have worked for Grand Prairie ISD, initially as a central office administrator in curriculum and instruction and most recently as the Executive Director of College Readiness. I currently am completing my doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction at Texas A&M University. The common thread throughout my experiences in education has been my collaboration with others to provide the best possible educational opportunities and experiences for students. As the incoming instructional leader of a fine curriculum and instruction department, I enthusiastically embrace the task of continuing to utilize fiscal, human, and material resources at my disposal to ensure that teachers and administrators are prepared with the necessary tools to foster student achievement. I believe that differentiated, rigorous, and relevant curriculum and instruction should meet the needs of all students and promote a rich and engaging learning environment. Moreover, a team approach within and across the District will bolster that effort. I look forward to the exchange of innovative ideas as we all work together to transform the lives of the families we serve.

Respectfully,

Jeffrey C. Miller Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction

Department of English Language Learners DECEMBER FOCUS: WALKING THE TALK - IMPLEMENTATION OF ELL STRATEGIES AND PROGRAMS

HIGHLIGHTS!

ELEMENTARY: Roomtionary! Ms. Sotero’s classroom at Bradfield ES Elementary

Ms. Sotero’s classroom at Bradfield ES

The Bi-Literacy Framework Model’s program launch proves to be a successful implementation as students are focused on acquiring academic language through a print-rich environment. Teachers and students are creating their “Roomtionary” by posting general and academic vocabulary around their classrooms. With 5 designated areas to post new vocabulary around the classroom and 6 words identified per day, students will have the advantage of increasing their repertoire of words by being exposed to over 1,100 words per year in English and Spanish.

MIDDLE SCHOOL: Academic Response Frames

Ms. Lyles’ classroom at O’Banion MS

With the roll-out of ELPS 1 and ELPS 2 training from the Department of ELL, implementation of the learning has started to become evident in the classrooms. The trainings gave teachers an introduction and refresher of all things ESL as well as focused on encouraging the use of academic language in the four domains of listening, speaking, reading and writing through the use of academic response frames. In the class of Ms. Teresa Lyles of O’ Banion MS, she gets the students to enrich their Academic Language through constant use of the Academic Response Frames together AVID strategies in a print-rich environment.

For the third year in a row, the Kiwanis Key Leader Camp was a powerful culmination as well commencement of our leadership program for our ELLs. It is a culmination at the end of the school year in the spring since it gave an opportunity for students to demonstrate their skills in language as well as leadership in an event that molds students to become better leaders. It is also a commencement due to the fact that the students are learning and gaining skills from the Kiwanis Organization which is a group well-known for molding young people into becoming future leaders. The Garland ISD Key Leader Camp experience from Kiwanis International was featured in the December 2016 issue of Kiwanis magazine. Our ELL Leadership students were beautifully featured by writer Curtis Billue who eloquently captured individual student stories and highlighted our diligent efforts as a district.
