The GISSV Saturday School is excited to once again offer a German Immersion Summer Camp. We offer children a unique opportunity to spend their summer having fun learning/improving their German language skills in a stimulating, creative atmosphere! This summer, we also offer adult evening classes.
Grade 1-8 Camp
The language immersion summer camp is designed for students entering grade 1 to 8 in the fall of 2016 and open to students with and without prior knowledge of German. We offer special classes for newcomers to the German language. Throughout the day, students will be exposed to German. During the morning hours, students will attend German language classes; our staff exclusively teaches in German to provide a truly immersive learning environment and provides interactive feedback in the target language. We implement diverse teaching styles, enabling students to feel that they are equally treated in the classroom regardless of their language competency levels.
Evening Language Classes for Adults
During the summer, we offer intensive evening classes for adults from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Our array of classes is geared towards all language levels from beginning to advanced learners—including business classes. The classes are goal-oriented and directed at particular needs or demands: to advance personal German studies, to progress up the career ladder, to follow business opportunities, to pass a driving test, to assist your children with homework, or simply to be good speakers of the language.
Curriculum
The core curriculum of the Saturday School follows the Thuringian curriculum for elementary schools as adopted by GISSV and modified for the goals of the Saturday School, the general guidelines of „Deutsch als Fremdsprache“ (German as a Foreign Language), the guidelines of the Common European Framework of Reference for Language (CEFR) and the nationally recognized standards by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). Following these standards, our program ensures students’ language proficiency and preparation for the German language certificates DSD I and DSD II.
Afternoon Activities
The German language classes in the morning are complemented by a fun-filled afternoon program that introduces students to sports, music, art and other activities in both German and English. Students choose two afternoon activities to participate in each week (see the following page for the class schedule).
Musical
We will rehearse the musical „Flupp - ein Tag an dem es flupp machte“ and perform it by the end of camp. Sing in German, dive into Flupp’s adventures and learn about diversity in this engaging musical.
History of Arts
We will explore different artistic eras and drawing styles and create our own paintings. Choose a famous artist, learn about his/her life, culture and art, and share your findings with your classmates!
Soccer
Soccer is the sport in Germany. Explore the rules and tradition of this popular team sport and have fun while being physically active outdoors.
Cognitive Training
This class trains children to achieve greater competence in problem solving and inductive reasoning. If you want to work on getting better grades in school, this class is for you!
The European Traveler
Europe is a very diverse continent. Our adventure goes through Italy, France, Germany and Austria, and we will be exploring the geography, history and culture of each country along the way. We will be travelling with handmade maps and passports and making country-specific crafts.
Mad Scientist
Science plays an important role in helping children explore and understand the world around them. In this hands-on class, we will be learning about biology, chemistry, and physics by conducting experiments, observing our environment and recording our results.
Textile Design
We will be working and experimenting with textile materials such as fabric, wool and yarn. Learn how to use these materials based on techniques like crocheting, sewing, knitting, weaving and braiding. We will also create interesting and useful objects.
Cartooning
Game Board Design
Calling all artists! This is a fun and exciting drawing class taught by professional cartoonists and animators. Our themes this summer will be: Star Wars, SpongeBob, Japanese Anime and Godzilla vs. King Kong.
Students will use their imagination to create their very own board game in German or English. Students will learn about game design and layout. Each student will receive their own professional folding game board, timer, dice, pawns, a blank spinner, cards and play money!
Character and Comic Book Design
This class is designed for students who are interested in designing their own characters and comic book. You may create your masterpieces in German or English.
Secret Agent Adventures
Castle Construction
Students will create their own castle using a variety of recycled materials. We will explore famous European castles to get ideas. Please bring a cardboard box the size of a case of copy paper and four empty paper towel rolls for the towers. We will provide the rest of the building supplies.
International Cooking Class
1) Mission: Missing Mummy 2) Mystery in the Bermuda Triangle Our Secret Agent from Scotland Yard will train in students many valuable spy skills such as creating cool spy gadgets, dusting for fingerprints, ciphers, codes and signals and the art of disguise. We will challenge each student to become a great secret agent.
Cooking and eating amongst friends and family is a rewarding bonding activity that will form some of your most cherished memories. In this class, we will be cooking recipes from all over the world. Join us on an exciting culinary journey!
