German language classes, art, music, science, sports, cooking and more! Full- and half-day camps for students ages 6–16

The GISSV Saturday School is excited to once again offer a German Immersion Summer Camp. Our combination of morning language classes and engaging afternoon activities offers a unique opportunity for kids to learn and play in German! The German Immersion Summer Camp is for children ages 6-16. Prior knowledge of German is not required.

Morning Language Classes Students have language classes from 9:00 am to noon each day of camp. Language classrooms grades 1-8 will be formed each week based on current enrolled students’ age and knowledge of German, with special sections offered for students who are total newcomers to the language. All classrooms are small, so students will receive individual attention with listening, speaking, reading and writing. In the morning, our staff exclusively teaches in German to provide a truly immersive learning environment. The summer camp classes use the DaZ curriculum (Deutsch als Zweitsprache; German as a second language). All required books are included in the tuition and will be handed out on the first day of class. Families looking for a half-day camp may enroll only in morning language classes.

Afternoon Activities To balance out the studious mornings, our afternoons are packed with interesting, fun and physical activities ranging from art to soccer to science, cooking, yoga and music. All activities are mixed-age. Afternoon activities are held in both German and English, with a continued emphasis on German vocabulary-building and conversational language development. The afternoon activities are largely taught by the same instructors who already know the students from morning language classes.

Afternoon Activities All activities are mixed-age and are held in both German and English. Following a supervised lunch from 12:00 to 1:00 pm, there are two afternoon activity sessions, from 1:00 to 2:20 pm and from 2:35 to 4:00 pm. In each session, we offer five different activities that also vary from week to week. Students choose ONE activity for EACH session, for one week at a time.

Explore the World of German Music

Explore the great variety of German music—from favorite children’s songs to famous hits that are known around the world. We will learn new songs and enjoy singing and making music together. No prior musical knowledge is required. Kids who already can play instruments are welcome to bring their instruments to class. Percussion instruments for everyone will be provided.

European Traveler

Europe is a diverse continent. Our adventure goes through Italy, France, Germany and Austria and we will explore the geography, history and culture of each country along the way. We will travel with handmade maps and passports and will have hands-on fun with country-specific crafts.

Cartooning

In The Footsteps of Great Artists* We will explore different art movements and artistic styles from around the world, which will inspire our own artworks. Choose a famous artist, learn about his/her life, culture and art, and share your findings with your classmates! *Please note: This is our only all-afternoon activity. You must register for this activity for both afternoon activity slots.

Mad Scientist

Science plays an important role in helping children explore and understand the world around them. In this hands-on class, we will be learning about biology, chemistry and physics by conducting experiments, observing our environment and recording our results.

Soccer & Ballspiele

Soccer is the sport in Germany— learn the basic rules and explore the tradition of this popular team sport! We’ll also play other ball games and outdoor games that kids in German-speaking countries enjoy.

Textile Design Calling all artists! This is a fun and exciting drawing class taught by professional cartoonists and animators. Our themes this summer will be: Star Wars, Pokémon and Pals and other popular themes.

Experiment with materials such as fabric, wool and yarn, and learn how to crochet, felt, knit, sew, weave and braid! We’ll make both useful and fanciful objects.

Secret Agent Adventures

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to stop Doctor Doom and his dastardly dog Daisy before they cause havoc all over Europe! Go undercover and create several cool spy gadgets that will help you crack the case. Our daily Secret Agent training will teach you many valuable spy skills such as dusting for fingerprints, decoding mysterious codes and creating secret messages. Top-secret team challenges such as our spy obstacle course and laser crawl game will prepare you to become a great secret agent.

Boost Your Intelligence

Intelligence is the key for a successful and happy life— and the good news is: it can be learned! We’ll introduce the “Cognitive Training for Children Developmental Program” developed by German psychologist Karl Josef Klauer to help your kids to learn and to better solve problems.

Castle Construction

Students will create their own castle using a variety of recycled materials. We will explore famous European castles to get ideas. Please bring a cardboard box the size of a case of copy paper and four empty paper towel rolls for the towers. We will provide the rest of the building supplies.

International Cooking Class

Cooking and eating with friends and family is a rewarding bonding activity that will form some of your most cherished memories. In this class, we will be cooking recipes from all over the world—join us on an exciting culinary journey!

Game Board Design

Students will use their imagination to create their very own board game in German or English. Students will learn about game design and layout. Each student will receive their own professional folding game board, timer, dice, pawns, a blank spinner, cards and play money!

Star Wars Adventure

Travel to a galaxy far, far away…. In this class, we will learn to draw several of the Star Wars characters, create an Ewok puppet, and decorate Wookie cookies. Make your own lightsaber and perfect your skills in our Jedi Starfighter Tournament! Play several Star Wars games and compete for prizes.

Time Machine Detectives

Travel the world back in time and discover several mysterious places as you chase the evil scientist Dr. Slime. Stop him before he changes history! Create your own time machine control center, which will direct you to your destination back in time. First stop….75MYA.

Pirate Adventures

Through a series of games, art and puzzles, crew members learn about the exciting life of pirates! Design your own island with a secret treasure map. Send secret messages with signal flags. Try your luck at our Caribbean limbo contest and play sea life trivia with water balloons. Learn to fence with Nerf swords, play our Island Madness game and try not to walk the plank!!

Let’s Dance

Students will dance to German pop songs and help develop choreography. We’ll make a video of our flash mob performance at the end of every week, and share it with all participants. Join us!

Yoga and Mindfulness

In an increasingly hectic world, children are constant stimulated. Yoga can provide your child with the necessary tools to calm their nervous system and to relax! We will teach basic yoga poses and meditation practices in a fun and playful way. Children will also get a chance to be creative by making their own yoga journal about poses and the history of yoga. There are many benefits of yoga for children such as developing body awareness, learning how to use their bodies in a healthy way, building concentration, and increasing their confidence and positive self-image.
