Introduction

Learn, play, rest! Through the project for the refurbishment of the manufacturing ceramic area in Laveno-Mombello we would like to create a series of spaces 1. Introduction 2. dedicated to children and teenagers, making them main actors and users of every place. Expected functions are related to the education of children, through different approaches to design the space. These approaches are related to different scopes: a traditional one, with classrooms and laboratories, or a more interactive and innovative one, with playgrounds and leisure areas. Furthermore, the project addresses also other users, in fact, young boys and girls would have a place to enjoy sports, cultural activities, study rooms or just spend their spare time. But also we consider important users all the adults that walk their children to school and that can spend their time in the area, for example in cafes, in the gym or in the outdoor places. Thanks to the variety of activities proposed in the area, the new complex aims to work h24 and 7 days per week. Some spaces are designed to follow the child’s growth. For instance, the new playground develops in a longitudinal line following the way the child relates to the surrounding environment, while other areas have a more flexible function to enable the interaction among different users and between users and the architectural space. For us is crucial to preserve the majority of the original structure. We maintain not only the Portaluppi directional building, but also the industrial complex behind it. We want to leverage the existing building’s potential enhancing all the features through different types of interventions. We preserve as much as possible of the original grid of pillars: the aim is to allocate in it different kinds of spaces highlighting flexibility and free movement. The grid becomes the case for a set of modules with different activities inside as classrooms, laboratories, an auditorium, canteens, cafes, etc. The remaining area is a free connective tissue without precise and codified function, but that can develop according to different scenarios.

Masterplan - Phases scheme

Layout 1:1500

The project is conceived to be realized in 4 different phases to let the community slowly regain the manufacturing spaces. •

PHASE0 consists in the opening of two entrances to the area: the main access on Via Buozzi and a new one in the middle of the longitudinal extension. These create a connection between the railway station and the service entrance. With this first operation, a big architectural island, for ages closed to the community, becomes accessible to citizens that can walk in and experience outdoor spaces, while the remain areas to be refurbished are enclosed to follow the future works.

PHASE1 consists in the realization of some parts of the school area, some rooms and camping areas with their related services. With these interventions, part of the school is activated and it also possible to envision long stay in the hospitality area.

PHASE2 provides the completion of the school and the realization of all related services as the library and the laboratories. This is the most complex and demanding phase of the project as it creates a full working school system. Furthermore, some external activities become part of the complex enriching the activity supply and enlarging the catchment area.

PHASE3 is the last phase in which the whole complex is completed. The hospitality area is now fully working and new spaces, directly managed by external associations, are built: for example the auditorium, the fitness gym and the bike repair shop.

Now the whole area is fully completed and ready to host the community all day long.

MANAGEMENT

We propose a system working h24 and all year long. This is possible thanks to a variety of different activities. Some areas are envisioned to work mainly during daytime as school, related laboratories and services, while other spaces are designed to be open also in evenings and night time like the gym, the auditorium, the restaurant and the cafes. Some spaces are for experiences that can be considered daily activities so constantly present, while other spaces can be used for concerts, projections or events in general, representing the uniqueness of particular events. Even the camping and hospitality area safeguards the continuity in opening time of the complex, always open to host new users, kids and adults.

We envision that the project is not managed by a unique operator. The owner of the area and the public administration manage the educational spaces and related labs and services. A private actor manages accommodation spaces and camping area. Some side activities, crucial for the functioning of the system are managed by specific local associations: a cultural association for the auditorium and sports organizations for the gym and related playgrounds. In conclusion, retail spaces (the fitness gym, cafes and restaurant) are entrusted to private operators.

Modules organization

SCHOOL The kindergarten has spaces for 0-2 year-old and 3-5 year-old children. The 0-2 years reception classroom is formed by a flexible space dedicated to playing activities, naps and a changing area. The 3-5 years reception classroom is composed by a playing area with a space for focus activities, an alter-ego area, a free open space for all the creative activities, and toilets. Two laboratories are dedicated to the youngest: the art laboratory and a swimming pool.

GYM The primary school is organized in classrooms composed by modules of different dimensions according to kids necessities: the classroom module, the alter-ego free space module and the toilet module. The school is completed by two different laboratories: the computer lab and the language lab. The inner corridor has a distribution function and it works also as a new meeting place.

The gym is envisioned to work all day long, both during the school time then after, in the afternoon and in the evening. It hosts a regular basketball and volleyball courts, that can also be used for circus and gymnastic activities. From the upper floor it is possible to enjoy a game or watch children training.

CAMPING A series of free spaces dedicated to training and playing completes the gym area and the sport playgrounds. The sport area has also some related facilities as changing rooms, storage spaces and toilets.

The camping provides different kinds of accommodations that can host single visitors or groups. The ground floor of the ex-storage area is converted in double rooms with private bathroom. This transformation preserves the original structure with concrete bearing walls and vaulted ceilings. Instead, the open first floor is partly closed and it is organized as a hostel with isolated or grouped bed-structure and a common bathroom.

In conclusion, part of the original structural elements are preserved in the outdoor space. The camping area develops under both covered structures and the sky. The reception and the common spaces (organized in two levels) are available for young visitors, as a kitchen and dining room and the outdoor green space, partly equipped and partly free.
