What’s New

Created in 2018 by Behrend Fellows, the Belfer Center launched CultureSwap in January 2019. CultureSwap matches arts & culture professionals across NYC cultural institutions to shadow and learn from one another. It's an opportunity to meet industry colleagues, compare work structures and cultures, and explore successes and challenges.

Women inPower has expanded to 12 new cities around the world, equipping local organizers with the tools to lead their own Women inPower events and Chapters. With a match from the Genesis Foundation, Women inPower will run 10 pilot Chapters to specifically serve Jewish women.

The #GivingTuesday Team is hosting global and community summits for over 150 leaders to share best practices and discuss the future of the movement. The team also continues their groundbreaking data collaborative which includes 60+ data providers, research projects with academics, and data philanthropy workshops in over 30 countries.

With 330 Circles nationwide, Ben Franklin Circles was awarded an honorable mention by The Civvys—an award given out to honor ”civic collaboration best practices to achieve real results in facilitating dialogue, enabling cross-partisan action, or putting civility and community above ideology.”


Founded by 92Y in 2012, #GivingTuesday has grown into a groundbreaking global giving movement. #GivingTuesday inspires people to take action on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving in whatever way is meaningful for them: with donations, by volunteering, through acts of kindness and connection, or advocacy. #GivingTuesday is a movement encompassing all 50 states and over 150 countries, inspiring millions of people around the world to engage in countless acts of generosity.

2018 was a record breaking year for #GivingTuesday, with growth in dollars raised, social media impressions, and global participation. The number of official, independently-led #GivingTuesday movements has reached over 55 countries around the world and over 120 communities campaigns around the U.S.


#MyGivingStory is a global campaign and social media storytelling contest encouraging individuals to tell stories about why they give. Throughout the month of November, individuals responded to the prompt, “Every act of giving has a story. What is yours?” by submitting either a written essay or a video story. In 2018, the #MyGivingStory campaign went global in South Africa, Spain, Brazil, Russia, Mexico, Tanzania, Czech Republic, India, China, Romania, Poland, and USA.

IN THE U.S. 3,128 stories shared during the month-long contest 403,802 votes on submitted stories 2,511,398 story views Participation in ALL 50 STATES $50,000 given in prize money to organizations chosen by the winning stories’ writers.

GLOBAL 12 global campaigns 7 grantees #GivingTuesday country leaders collaborated, shared best practices, tools, and resources as they launched their first #MyGivingStory campaigns in 2018. In 2019, #MyGivingStory hopes to grow to 20 countries.

BEN FRANKLIN CIRCLES In the spirit of Benjamin Franklin’s mutual improvement club, Ben Franklin Circles give anyone, anywhere the tools to convene their own “junto” and spark discussions about virtue, ethics, leadership, and community in the 21st century to improve ourselves and the world around us. This project Is presented in partnership with Stanford University’s Hoover Institution and Citizen University.

7 Days of Genius is a global festival of creativity to advance the common good. For one week, communities around the world come together to create and celebrate new genius solutions to some of the world’s most pressing social issues. In 2018, there was a focus on the arts. 92Y American Conversation brings the very best in political, economic and cultural dialogue for all Americans. Programs include a 21st century leadership series with CNN’s David Gergen, The UnConvention with Comedy Central, and Citizen University’s Civic Collaboratory, which brings together leaders from around the country to workshop innovative civic engagement projects.

Past Programs

In collaboration with PRI & Mic, The UnConvention engaged millennials in the 2016 Election and sparked dialogue on the top issues facing young people in America. The platform included: • Digital engagement with polls, quizzes and a closed Facebook group of 150+ young influencers across the political spectrum to shape content and stimulate discussion • A week of events across NYC • Satellite events and meet-ups around the country.

Funded by NYCEDC, 92Y offered year-long Fellowships to professionals in NYC. For 3 years, Fellows received career advancement workshops with industry professionals, mentoring opportunities from senior leaders, and executive education sessions that address the challenges facing leaders in scaling their companies or advancing their careers. • 9 Crain’s ‘40 under 40’

Presidents are judged by their first 10 days in office. This was our turn to see what we can accomplish in 100 days. Starting January 20, 2018, 92Y asked anyone, anywhere to join the #My100Days challenge, a social initiative designed to inspire transformative actions and set a benchmark for 2018. We asked, “What can you accomplish in 100 days?” Campaign highlights include: • Trended #3 nationally on Twitter on launch day • Over 1,000 people signed up on the website to participate • Nearly 1000 participants joined the Facebook Community to share their progress, offer support, and cheer each other on.

In December 2016, 92Y convened highly curated decision-makers and the general public in NYC and online to discuss and experience how science and technology are shaping our future. The Summit included: • A digital confessional • Food from the future • Virtual reality arcade And onstage conversations with experts on topics like the future of artificial intelligence, technogoverning, and the first amendment.
