The Proof of the Pudding is in the Data
BY LEE RICKWOOD
I
n its first rebranding since it was founded in 1961, thinktv is both the new name and the call to action for what was called the Television Bureau of Canada (TVB). As the media world evolves and new ad strategies emerge, so too thinktv is changing to better reflect the industry it serves. Less than a year after hiring a new president, the organization has a new name and more important developments are to come. Catherine MacLeod was named president in December, and she brought a breadth of media and leadership experience to (what was then) the TVB. She came in from Bell Media, where as Senior Vice-President, Specialty Channels and Bell Media Production, she was responsible for the brand and programming strategies across all of the company’s non-sports specialty television and digital assets. She also was responsible for in-house production and original digital video content. MacLeod had also served Bell as Vice-President, Business and Legal Affairs, providing business and legal support for the acquisition and creation of specialty programming, music-related content and in-house productions. Her plate is just as loaded at thinktv, and with the rebrand comes the re-positioning of the organization in the context of a complicated and complex media landscape. “We operate in a world that is considerably different from the one in which the TVB was established,” MacLeod explained in correspondence with Broadcaster Magazine. “Naturally, our focus has shifted. We know that TV works but in a world that almost singularly focused on data, we need to share the unequivocal proof of its unparalleled effectiveness, on its own and as a turbo booster for other media platforms. We are a ‘TV
and’ organization; not a ‘TV or’ organization.” So with the shift in focus came the rebrand. “Our decision to rebrand was not made lightly, and we went through a lengthy process to get to the new brand,” MacLeod described. “TVB was a great name and was an excellent representation of the organization for a long time. Over the last few years, the television industry has changed dramatically, and our concern was that the brand was stuck in neutral. We are focused on being significantly more relevant to agencies and advertisers, so a fresh brand that would indicate that shift and breathe new life into the organization felt appropriate.” Working with the Toronto-based branding, communication and design company Frontier to develop the new brand and supporting creative elements, the need to reflect a belief in the power of television was paramount. “We want agencies and advertisers to be thinking about television. It is simply the most effective advertising medium there is to drive business results and what’s more, television boosts the performance of all of the other elements of a media plan. When an advertiser thinks about the media mix that will most effectively move products off shelves, they need to think about television as being at the heart of that mix.” The not-for-profit marketing organization works on behalf of Canadian broadcasters to communicate to the advertising industry the benefit, value and effectiveness of advertising across all media platforms, with TV as the focal point, as MacLeod explained. “We are here to help advertisers and agencies get the most out of the fantastic medium that is television and part of that includes supporting advertisers and agencies with ongoing proof
“TV is one of the most effective
investments a brand can make,
particularly as a driver of a multiplatform strategy.”

“Television remains at the heart of popular culture and advertising effectiveness,” said Errol Da-Ré, Chairman of the Board of thethen TVB and Senior Vice President Sales, Shaw Media, when Catherine MacLeod was hired. “With Catherine’s strategic vision and business acumen, she is the ideal leader for the organization today, and a strong ambassador for the television industry. We couldn’t be more pleased to have her on board.”
of television’s effectiveness” (through research, education or training sessions). MacLeod added that thinktv wants to lower the barriers for entry to television, as reflected in its vision for Telecaster and a new commercial clearance process. “For the last few months, we have been examining the efficiency of the Telecaster services,” she explained. “We have been fortunate to have the collaboration of our partners – agencies, the ASC, distributors, and broadcasters – each of whom has provided terrific insights about how we can make the Telecaster process better for all users. “ MacLeod noted that with initial reviews nearing completion, the goal is to roll out a new system early in the fall. Likewise, although some members of the organization’s research team were recently let go, research remains a critical part of the operation, and newly hired Kathy Gardner will have new plans to roll out soon, as well. No changes are anticipated to the Board of Directors, and by-laws direct what can and cannot be done with respect to the Board’s composition. Nevertheless, thinktv is considering the introduction of nonvoting members of the Board, MacLeod described, to represent groups like agencies and advertisers. “We believe in having many voices around the table and would hope that any new
members would also benefit from being more involved with the organization. “ Perhaps new voices will echo the observation that, while some global digital brands have done an exceptional job of marketing themselves to advertisers and agencies, the pendulum seems to be swinging back to television, and enthusiasm for its size, scope and reach. “There is no doubt that digital offers extraordinary opportunities for advertisers and all of our broadcast members have excellent products in the digital space, MacLeod observed. “What we see, however, is that an advertiser’s digital spend should not be taken out of their TV budget. All elements of digital media, most particularly search, perform much better when combined with television. Advertisers get the best out of search when they feed it with the interest and awareness that is created by television. “Numerous econometric studies clearly demonstrate the value and effectiveness of television as an advertising medium. What is exciting is the increasingly sophisticated research and data methodologies that continue to prove TV’s ROI in different ways and with even more accuracy.” Sharing those insights will get the advertising and marketing community to think TV. Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television Names Canadian Screen Awards Nominees
The 2016 Canadian Screen Awards nominees were introduced at simultaneous press conferences in Toronto and Montreal. A long-standing friend of the Academy, Martin Short hosted the Canadian Screen Awards in 2013 and 2014. He has received five nominations and won the Academy’s Earle Grey Award for acting in 1995. This year, he’s being presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award | Academy Special Award. PHOTO CREDIT: G. PIMENTEL PHOTOGRAPHY.
Nominations in 132 categories of the 2016 Canadian Screen Awards were announced during simultaneous press conferences in Toronto and Montreal and via live webcast. The Academy’s annual awards show celebrates the best in film, television and digital media (24 film, 101 television and seven digital media nominees were announced; complete listings can be found on the Academy’s newly designed fanzone.academy.ca web portal). “Congratulations to each and every nominee,” said Helga Stephenson, CEO, Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television. “They stand out in a field where the bar is already set high and continues to rise. That’s one sign of a vibrant screen-based industry in Canada.” This year, a new team headed by executive producer Barry Avrich will handle production duties for the 2-hour CBC broadcast gala with FRANK Content, a Toronto-based production company. Already announced are some rather special and unique award winners: comedy icon Martin Short, who will be honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award, and the RouterBased Production Audio Design used for the Much Music 6

Video Awards, winner of the Academy’s Outstanding Technical Achievement Award. Short’s remarkable career in movies, television shows and on stage is recalled in his 2014 memoir, I Must Say: My Life As A Humble Comedy Legend. “Marty is a national treasure and we are thrilled to add him to our Canadian Mount Rushmore of comedy,” said Avrich. The all-digital, router-based production audio design system created specifically for large-scale live broadcast by supervising audio engineer Anthony Montano and senior manager, broadcast audio operations Michael Nunan, has provided live music show audio teams with faster and more flexible responses during rehearsals and live broadcast, where top audio quality is paramount. “Its skilled innovators,” noted Academy Chair Martin Katz, “raised the bar on audio technology to boost excitement for the audience.” The Canadian Screen Awards presentation gala caps off a week of events as part of the Academy’s Canadian Screen Week; l it will air live from the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto Sunday night, March 13 on CBC. www.broadcastermagazine.com

Recognized for its accomplishments with four Canadian Screen Award nominations, Odyssey also helped break documentary ground with its 4K resolution production strategy, using digital cinema cameras on aerial drones and underwater rigs, and shooting in extreme heat and cold on extended expeditions. Shot over 18 months, cutting-edge techniques helped capture gorgeous footage for the epic nature and anthropology series. 8

INDUSTRY ‘Next-Gen’ Changes at Characters Jennifer Goldhar moved into the role of President at The Characters Talent Agency just before New Year, replacing agency founder Larry Goldhar. Larry retired from his rep duties after almost 50 years of working as an agent to take on the newly created role of CEO overseeing the organization’s administrative structure. Ryan Goldhar took on Larry’s longstanding client list to ensure a smooth transition for the agency. Additionally, Tyman Stewart has been appointed as President of the agency’s Vancouver office, replacing Leonard Bonnell. “When we started, there were only four other established agencies,” Larry recalled. “None of them exist today amongst the over 100 agencies that submit performers, producers, directors, writers and technical people. I could not be prouder of the legacy we have created.”

Canadian Media Sales Launches New Website With Tools for U.S. Advertising Agencies Placing Buys in Canada (PRNewsFoto/Canadian Media Sales)
Canadian Media Sales (CMS), the largest U.S. representative of Canadian media properties, launched a new website with tools for U.S. advertising agencies looking to place buys in Canada. The website (www.canmediasales. com) includes information on the Canadian population, audience profiles, coverage maps, creative guidelines, and more. “Our team has decades of experience navigating the Canadian media landscape, and this website reflects the information our buyers most commonly request,” said Michael Custardo, president of CMS. CMS’s revamped website also features detailed information on the company’s diverse media portfolio, which includes television, radio, digital, and mobile properties in Canada. “We

proudly represent Canada’s top media properties through our partnerships with Shaw Media and Bell Media,” Custardo added. “Our portfolio has the ability to reach nearly 100% of the Canadian population, and our networks consistently rank in the top 10 across all demos. “The Canadian media landscape is one that is ever-changing, and buyers count on us to provide up-to-date information as it becomes available,” he continued. “As changes arise in technology, media consumption, and regulations, we will continue to evolve with the industry and share new information with our buyers. Representing Canadian television, radio, digital and mobile properties, CMS provides information and resour-
ces to help American advertising agencies place targeted buys and reach nearly all of the Canadian population. The CMS sales team says it helps buyers create and execute effective campaigns, whether through brandsell, integrations, contests, sponsorships, cross-platform solutions, or other creative strategies. Shaw Media operates Global Television and 19 of the country’s most popular specialty channels, and their online companions; earlier this year, Corus Entertainment agreed to buy Shaw Media from Shaw Communications. Tiger Series Tackles 4K
Tiger Series is an ecosystem of software and hardware products with support for Macintosh, Windows and Linux clients.
With the advent of 4K as a production format and required deliverable, content producers need a new approach to their collaborative production and post pipelines. Advancements in CPU and GPU technology have brought unprecedented computing power to the desktop, enabling high-resolution colour correction, compositing and editing. Still, many organizations are hampered with storage products that have inherent sharing limitations and network bottlenecks. These basic setups can’t support high-res playback, and demand manual project management. Workarounds, like duplicating and shuffling
material, require time and more storage, and increase cost, project management headaches and frustration. Tiger Technology has addressed these issues with the Tiger Series, a suite of advanced, high-performance, yet easy-to-use workflow solutions. Tiger Serve is a workflow controller that manages spinning or solid state disk storage, and is field-proven to share upwards of 20 GB/s bandwidth (using SSD) to multiple clients working with uncompressed 4K files. www.broadcastermagazine.com
BRC_JanFeb2016.indd 17
Dennis Kutchera, a veteran online Avid editor and colourist in Halifax, NS, works with a Tiger Store/AccuSys (ExaSAN) system every day. “When we moved production to UHD, it became clear that we would need storage with the speed and capacity to handle the larger files sizes, plus be able to move quickly from ingest to conform to colour grading and mastering.” Kutchera’s team had to balance performance and capacity requirements with budget. “We looked at the offerings from the usual suppliers of shared storage, but really couldn’t go there. By using Tiger and AccuSys, we got a lot more storage capacity and speed for far less money and the thing has not skipped a beat. The Avid Bin Locking works as you would expect and managing the system is very simple. We are not IT people and don’t have to be. Tiger support is responsive when you need it, but we really have not had to call on them very often. We have left sneaker-net workflows where they belong - in the past.” DAV Solutions is the Canadian distribution partner for Tiger, and DAV President Chris Chahley notes, “The Tiger Series is an ecosystem of software and hardware products that seamlessly supports Macintosh, Windows and Linux
clients. Advanced project management tools, full Avid Bin Locking support, integrated backup and archive, and rock solid performance have helped Tiger appliances gain prominence in today’s highly competitive marketplace. “Our Canadian Tiger customer base ranges from small 2 or 3 person post shops, university film and television programmers, broadcasters, commercial editing and post facilities with dozens of editors and CGI render nodes, to the National Film Board working with uncompressed 4K material,” Chahley says. “Customer satisfaction levels are high.” Laurie Martel, Operations Director at Triangle Post, a leading 4K shop in Toronto, uses a single node Tiger Serve1 controller and says “The Tiger Serve1 has proven to be a robust and dynamic solution for our 4K shared storage needs. DAV Solutions installed the system, gave us a primer and we were off to the races that afternoon. In a matter of days we were using the system in multiple Avid suites and have had ZERO downtime since the install. The flexibility it has allowed is invaluable and came at an affordable price.” “The flexibility and scalability of Tiger solutions holds great appeal in post environments worldwide,” adds David Pollock, Director of Sales at Tiger. “A modest initial setup can grow to provide extreme performance as required. We have customers that share in excess of 20 GB per second so they can collaboratively edit, composite and finish UHD, 4K, and now even 8K projects, in real-time.” February 2016

NEW Dual Recording Update for Sony PXW-FS5
New firmware updates for Sony’s PXW-FS5
Updates for Sony’s PXW-FS5 enable dual recording for writing identical content to two SD cards simultaneously. Firmware Version 1.0 also supports simultaneous proxy recording of the main HD or Quad Full HD (QFHD) recording at a lower bit-rate to 720P HD or 640 x 360 pixels. Each proxy recording has the same filename and timecode as the main recording and is stored in different folders on the same SD card. With Firmware V 1.0, the PXW-FS5 records to Sony or to third-party external recorders via its HDMI, SDI or Composite Video outputs. SDI output is always HD, 10-bit 4:2:2. The HDMI output can be Quad Full HD (QFHD) or HD depending on the camera settings. The bit depth and colour sampling of the HDMI output signal is always 8-bit 4:2:2.
The PXW-FS5 also provides timecode and REC trigger signals via SDI and HDMI to compatible external devices. Using SMPTE RDD18, the PXW-FS5 outputs camera metadata including timecode and REC trigger signals via SDI. For HDMI output, timecode and REC trigger/status use manufacturerspecific data areas, which Sony provides by request. Firmware Version 1.0 also supports simultaneous internal and external recording of HD. When internally recording HD, the SDI and HD-SDI outputs are active, carrying HD, timecode and REC trigger signals. Compatible external recorders can be set to follow the camera’s timecode and record ON/ OFF commands automatically. Once updated, the PXW-FS5 can record QFHD to internal storage or to an external recorder, but not to both simultaneously. Firmware Version 1.1 will implement simultaneous QFHD internal/ external recording, including REC trigger and timecode via the HDMI output, and Please visit our website for details on our 2016 convention, allow simultaneous QFHD internal WABE's Educational Initiatives and to download copies of our recording and QFHD output to an external unit that serves as the monitoring 2015 papers: www.wabe.ca device. NEW Rohde & Schwarz Tests HDR
R&S VT-B2363 HDMI RX/TX 600 MHz module for the R&S VTS, R&S VTE and R&S VTC video testers
Rohde & Schwarz has developed a new module that transforms its R&S VTx video tester family into a platform for HDMI 2.0a and HDR testing. The new module offers generator and analyzer characteristics for data rates of up to 18 Gbit/s as well as functions introduced with the new HDMI standard, such as scrambling. It is backward compatible with HDMI 1.4, and it supports both HDCP 1.4 and HDCP 2.2 and covers real-time protocol testing and compliance testing in line with HDMI CTS 1.4/2.0. The generator function can be used to edit the Dynamic Range and Mastering InfoFrame specifically for HDR. It displays the enhanced extended display identification data (E-EDID) of the connected sink, including the HDR metadata block. It also permits the playback of customer-specific, uncompressed moving picture sequences. The analyzer unit provides suitable E-EDID and displays the Dynamic Range and Mastering InfoFrame. HDR-CTS tests are available for both the generator and the analyzer. In addition to protocol tests, users can perform electrical tests on HDMI sources for debugging and precompliance purposes, and also analyze video and audio content.
Wilderness Shoot with Miller Camera Support Director of photography Derek Frankowski of Frankowski Pictures was recently tasked with capturing the natural and inherent beauty of the Saskatchewan’s wilderness on a shoot for Saskatchewan Tourism. Traveling by both plane and boat into the middle of the Churchill River Basin, deep in the heart of the province, for two trips to shoot commercial spots for Saskatchewan Tourism, Frankowski needed to navigate through the remote and craggy terrain that included forests, marshes, lakes and rivers. Equally important was video equipment and a tripod system that was lightweight and inconspicuous so he’d remain invisible to the wildlife he was filming. His Miller Arrow 25 Solo ENG tripod system allowed him to have an efficient setup to capture the stunning vistas and animal activity that will help bring wildlife Director of Photography Derek Frankowski of and nature aficionados to the region. Frankowski Pictures “We were trying to film some bald eagles and we set up on this knoll, trying to stay in camouflage. We were able to get the camera low enough to stay hidden,” says Frankowski, adding that he could adjust quickly to new shooting heights and make quick modifications to the tripod. The Solo tripod was a further asset to Frankowski, particularly when filming in rocky terrain. “I have a six-foot long slider that I use and the Solo legs are really great for that. Before I had these legs, I used to always have a spreader between the legs so you couldn’t put it into really precarious spots. However, with this system I was able to put my slider into these really gnarly, craggy rocks because I can adjust the legs to different lengths. It was actually the perfect tool, because you can manipulate that tripod into absolutely any On location for Saskatchewan Tourism configuration to fit it over really rough terrain.” Frankowski’s set-up included a RED Dragon camera, as well as an array of Nikon lenses that ranged from a fisheye lens to a long 400 millimetre, easily accommodated by the super fluid head and the range of tension control that’s on the Arrow 25. Frankowski also works with the Dolly Crane FloatCam, using its motion control features to create precise movements even in challenging conditions in the field.
