A flexible hose that holds its position keeps the airflow aimed at a specific spot until physically bent or moved to another position. The magnetic base allows easy mounting and includes a shutoff valve for infinite control of force and flow. EXAIR Corporation
PLASTIC PROCESSORS
Eriez® patented PolyMag Process utilizes the time-tested method of high intensity magnetic separation to reclaim valuable plastic resins. The PolyMag separator uses powerful Erium™ Rare Earth Permanent Magnets to separate mixed resin regrind particles. These magnets allow effective separation with a tiny amount of the PolyMag Additive which is added to one of the co-molded resins. Then to recover the scrap that occurs from start-up, process variations or design changes, simply granulate the multi-material moldings using a standard plastics granulator. The regrind material is now ready to be run through the PolyMag separator resulting in a high percentage of resin separation. ERIEZ eriez@eriez.com, www.eriez.com

cutting machine’s in-feed uses pillow blocks from the igus® DryLin® range on its guidance mechanism used to center blocks of cheese weighing up to 187 pounds. The arms of this centralizing unit are mounted on the pillow blocks and then guided smoothly up from beneath a conveyor. The position of the guides means they are subjected to severe washdowns, are potential bacteria traps and inaccessible for maintenance. Fortunately the DryLin components are water and chemical resistant, will not corrode and have virtually no cavities in which food can lodge. They are also lubrication and maintenance-free and so are ideally suited for use in this application. LINEAR ACTUATOR
The N-380 / N-381 NEXACT® ceramic linear motor actuator is based on the Piezo Walk principle classical lead screw actuators combining high forces and long travel ranges with sub-nanometer resolution in a small package. The new stepping technology allows virtually unlimited travel ranges while retaining the high stiffness, in a very small package. The special drive design reduces the operating voltage to 40 V or less, with minimal power consumption. The piezo walk drive effects linear motion directly, without the need to transform rotation with gears and leadscrews. Backlash and wear are eliminated and the drive is maintenance-free. NEXACT® actuators exhibit high stiffness and are self-locking when powered down with nanometer position stability, and zero heat dissipation or servo-dither at rest. PI

Aerotech ANT130-L series stages provide speed, accuracy, resolution, repeatability, reliability and travel range and are offered in two accuracy grades. With its low profile it has applications for high-accuracy alignment inspection, positioning, and measurement stations. The ANT130-L employs a center-driven, non-clogging, non-contact linear motor and encoder as the driving element. Since the linear motor is a direct-drive device there is no backlash, windup or “striction” normally associated with a lead- or ball-screw drive. The ANT130-L series stages are easily configured as XY assemblies. Options include precision orthogonality alignment to 5 arc seconds as well as vertical axis solutions. Aerotech
BELT DRIVE SYSTEM
The NBK EXCEL-A-BELT miniature belt drive system features a unique arched tooth profile with zero backlash which enables the system to run much longer, cleaner and quieter. The key to the new tooth profile, which allows for high accuracy positioning and precise rotation transmission, is that it provides a rolling action between the belt and the specially formed drive sprocket. As the belt tooth enters and leaves the sprocket it does so in a rocking motion which reduces wear and contaminates from belt or sprocket tooth abrasion. SENSORS PROVIDE HIGH-SPEED POSITION FEEDBACK IN SAWMILL M TS Tempsonics® R-Series sensors play a key role in a number of motion control applications throughout the Centralia Sawmill, a greenfield sawmill operating since 2006. The mill, which was built exclusively to process logs averaging 9 inches and to produce 2x4, 2x6, 4x4, 4x6 and 1x4 studs, maintains a production average of 8,500 logs per shift with a maximum of 11,200, exceeding the projected 10,000 logs per shift. More than 60 R-Series sensors are being used in applications such as the merchandising system, canter, vertical shape sawing gang edger, board edger, edging fence, and dual fork stacker. “I’ve built many sawmills and I most often choose MTS sensors,” said Lloyd Pederson, owner, Pederson Management, Ltd. of Kelowna, BC, who designed the Centralia Sawmill and specified and purchased all the equipment. “Accuracy and repeatability are the most important issues in motion control, and the MTS sensors have repeatedly provided proven reliability and accuracy in a very volatile environment.” The R-Series SSI encoder position sensor features faster data processing and more accurate sensing for motion control applications in the wood industry, providing customers with a high-performance sensor in a durable industrial package. “In sawmill applications, the optimization of materials - meaning less waste and more product produced - is key to the success of the business operation,” said Matt Hankinson, marketing manager, MTS Sensors. “Because of this, many suppliers in the wood industry have begun using magnetostrictive sensors with synchronous serial interface (SSI) on their machines to provide real-time linear position feedback of the actuators for accurate, dynamic control at fast and slow speeds that maximizes throughput and yield.” The R-Series SSI output sensor includes options for synchronized 7500 Hz update rates and position accuracy as low as +/–40 microns (+/–0.0016 inch) standard, (+/–20 microns with the linearity correction option). MTS’ proprietary synchronization technology guarantees the most accurate dynamic position output while minimizing inherent system-related delays to produce smooth, precise velocity loop control. The rugged design ensures high resistance to shock (100 g) and vibration (up to 15 g / 10-2, 000Hz, 30g with the HVR option) using industry accepted testing methods. With its unique doubleshielded design, the new R-Series product also includes the industry’s highest EMC immunity level (IEC/EN 50082-2, IEC/ EN 61000-4-2/3/4/6, level 3 / 4 criterion A). Like all R-Series sensors, the SSI output model comes standard with an IP67 housing (IP 68 with integral cable), as well as UL/ATEX-approved explosion-proof and NEMA Type 4X optional housings. The R-Series model RH hydraulic or “rod-style” products that are used throughout the mill are specifically designed to be embedded into high-pressure hydraulic actuators. The integral highpressure isolation tube is designed to withstand static pressure of 350 bar (5000 psi) and peak pressures of 690 bar (10,000 psi). Using industry standard cylinders designed to accept these sensors, machine designers can add high performance position and velocity feedback to their servoactuators by simply selecting the required stroke length and sensor output or control interface. The R-Series sensors are pre-configured at the factory by model code designation. For many applications, no adjustments are required for normal sensor

installation and operation, but if sensor parameters need to be changed on-site, the sensors are easy to program using one of two options — pushbutton programmer (handheld or cabinet mounted) or PC software programming tools depending on the user’s needs. Using external serial communication for monitoring and programming, there is no need to open the sensor’s electronics housing. Further, simple diagnostic feedback is indicated by built-in weatherproof, dual-coloured LEDs. Keeping the sensor electronics isolated ensures that seal integrity and the highest product reliability are maintained. The Centralia Mill runs at an infeed speed of 1000 logs per hour and produces 170 pieces of finished lumber per minute. MTS Systems Corp., Sensors Division info@mtssensors.com, www.mtssensors.com

B&R is introducing five new 86mm flange stepper motors (NEMA 34) that have holding torque values ranging from 4.0 to 13.6 Nm. The design and control enables high-precision positioning without an encoder system. Equipped with an aluminum housing, the new NEMA 34 motors are able to transport thermal power dissipation with the lowest possible thermal resistance. This considerably reduces heating of the motor, which increases the lifespan of the bearings. The close-fitting seals not only protect against oil loss, they also generally prevent dirt particles from penetrating, which ensures that the lubricant is working at full efficiency. The optional IP65 upgrade with built-in clamp for the back of the motor makes wiring easier and permits use in particularly harsh environmental conditions. B&R Industrial Automation Corp.

The Truth About Compressed Air! If you think compressed air is too expensive and noisy - read this. The facts will surprise you!
Compare these Blowoffs
Facts about Blowers
There are a variety of ways to blow the water from the bottles shown in the photo below, but which method is best? To decide, we ran a comparison test on the same application using four different blowoff methods: drilled pipe, flat air nozzles, Super Air Knife (each using compressed air as a power source), and a blower supplied air knife (using an electric motor as a power source). Each system consisted of two twelve inch long air knives. The following comparison proves that the EXAIR Super Air Knife is the best choice for your blowoff, cooling or drying application.
Energy conscious plants might think a blower to be a better choice due to its slightly lower electrical consumption compared to a compressor. In reality, a blower is an expensive capital expenditure that requires frequent downtime and costly maintenance of filters, belts and bearings. Here are some important facts:
The goal for each of the blowoff choices was to use the least amount of air possible to get the job done (lowest energy and noise level). The compressed air pressure required was 60 PSIG which provided adequate velocity to blow the water off. The blower used had a ten horsepower motor and was a centrifugal type blower at 18,000 RPM. The table at the bottom of the page summarizes the overall performance. Since your actual part may have an odd configuration, holes or sharp edges, we took sound level measurements in free air (no impinging surface).
Filters must be replaced every one to three months. Belts must be replaced every three to six months. Typical bearing replacement is at least once a year at a cost near $1000.
Drilled Pipe
Blower Air Knife
This common blowoff is very inexpensive and easy to make. For this test, we used (2) drilled pipes, each with (25) 1/16” diameter holes on 1/2” centers. As shown in the test results below, the drilled pipe performed poorly. The initial cost of the drilled pipe is overshadowed by its high energy use. The holes are easily blocked and the noise level is excessive - both of which violate OSHA requirements. Velocity across the entire length was very inconsistent with spikes of air and numerous dead spots.
The blower proved to be an expensive, noisy option. As noted below, the purchase price is high. Operating cost was considerably lower than the drilled pipe and flat air nozzle, but was comparable to EXAIR’s Super Air Knife. The large blower with its two 3” (8cm) diameter hoses requires significant mounting space compared to the others. Noise level was high at 90 dBA. There was no option for cycling it on and off to conserve energy like the other blowoffs. Costly bearing and filter maintenance along with downtime were also negative factors.
Flat Air Nozzles
EXAIR Super Air Knife
As shown below, this inexpensive air nozzle was the worst performer. It is available in plastic, aluminum and stainless steel from several manufacturers. The flat air nozzle provides some entrainment, but suffers from many of the same problems as the drilled pipe. Operating cost and noise level are both high. Some manufacturers offer flat air nozzles where the holes can be blocked - an OSHA violation. Velocity was inconsistent with spikes of air.
The Super Air Knife did an exceptional job of removing the moisture on one pass due to the uniformity of the laminar airflow. The sound level was extremely low. For this application, energy use was slightly higher than the blower but can be less than the blower if cycling on and off is possible. Safe operation is not an issue since the Super Air Knife can not be dead-ended. Maintenance costs are low since there are no moving parts to wear out.
• Blower bearings wear out quickly due to the high speeds (17-20,000 RPM) required to generate effective airflows. • Poorly designed seals that allow dirt and moisture infiltration and environments above 125°F decrease the one year bearing life. • Many bearings can not be replaced in the field, resulting in downtime to send the assembly back to the manufacturer. Blowers take up a lot of space and often produce sound levels that exceed OSHA noise level exposure requirements. Air volume and velocity are often difficult to control since mechanical adjustments are required. To discuss an application, contact:
