MIPI Alliance meets in Toronto, rolls out new standards Marking its 10th anniversary as an international organization that develops interface specifications for mobile and mobile-influenced industries, MIPI Alliance released new versions of its UniPro and M-PHY specs during its all members meeting in Toronto this October. These specs address power efficient, high-speed serial links in a battery-powered environment. End markets benefitting from the specifications include handheld devices, digital cameras, video cameras, intelligent watches, tablets and smart phones. The UniPro specification, in combination with the M-PHY specification, is used by JEDEC for the newly introduced Universal Flash Storage (UFS) v2.0 Standard. The M-PHY spec is also utilized by PCI-SIG for the Mobile PCIe (M-PCIe) standard, and by USB-IF for the USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Inter-Chip (SSIC) standard. Founded in 2003, MIPI has more than 250 member companies worldwide, more than a dozen active working groups and has delivered more than 45 specifications within the mobile ecosystem in the last decade. Members of the organization include handset manufacturers, device OEMs, software providers, semiconductor companies, application processor developers, IP tool providers, test and test equipment companies, as well as camera, tablet and laptop manufacturers. The association’s membership changed with the development and evolvement of the Smartphone, according to Joel Huloux, Board Chairman of MIPI Alliance. “MIPI’s future success and growth runs in direct correlation to the relevancy of the Smartphone. Mobile technology continues to influence other areas of develop-

ment, such as cameras in automobiles. It will be interesting to see over the next 10-years what areas will need our focus.” Not considered a ‘consumer-facing’ brand, MIPI operates with three levels of membership, delivering different advantages to both large and small players. “To our smaller-sized members, we play a big role in raising their awareness to new standards that impact design. Larger-sized members often see an impact on profits, as they can leverage the knowledge of many other related companies representing many other nations,” Huloux says. Originally serving as a technology reservoir for members seeking answers to design problems, MIPI is now focused on expanding into the sensor vendor community, while growing its membership base in China. “The idea of standardizing on a single interface for sensors - has the MEMS industry abuzz with promise,” says Peter Lefkin, managing director of MIPI. “Developing this type of specification is where MIPI Alliance really can add value to all parts of the mobile and mobile-influenced ecosystem.” For more information about these specifications, or the MIPI Alliance, visit www.mipi.org. Proheat finds success in creating client/partner relationships Sohail Kamal West Coast Partnering with others, when done right, Correspondent makes everything easier. Partnering saves time and money and uncovers opportunities for growth. Mike Lowrie, product designer at Proheat, a division of Seastar Solutions, shares some insights for how building relationships with other divisions in the organization and how forging a partnership-style relationship with customers, has helped Proheat make great products even better.

Q: What makes Proheat successful and what will drive your success in the future? “I think one of our biggest successes is our ability to partner with OEM customers and end users,” says Lowrie. Proheat has a number of competitors, such as Webasto and Spheros, and it is their partnership approach to customer service that sets them apart. Lowrie adds, “We will even fly down to the customer to work out a problem with a member of their staff. It can be a customer service person, or it can be an engineer such as myself. For instance, a customer in Chicago had a problem with the product and so I went down and verified that it was not performing as specified.” Lowrie explained that there was something wrong with the product, but it turned out it was a problem with the customer’s system causing excessive transients (a very high voltage spike) that was causing the problem. Even though the issue came from the customer’s end, Proheat developed a solution, an add-on kit. “The customer was really impressed with how we delivered beyond the product as specified. The end user was a transit bus company, and when an issue takes place that affects daily commuters, they know we will be there to deliver,” says Lowrie. Q: That is fantastic, and for most of our readership in the East, they can certainly appreciate how important a warm bus is to a commuter. What should we look forward to in the future for Proheat? “We are developing more compact systems, more feature enhancements and additional user interaction capabilities. For instance, we want to produce more BTUs in a smaller package, which will expand our capabilities as well as extend our market penetration.” Says Lowrie. Lowrie couldn’t comment on additional user interaction that they have in store, however, he did mention that by taking advantage of mobile devices one could show the user how well the product is performing. This product performance data could help the user determine how efficiently it is running, how much money they have saved, and more quickly gather diagnostic information so that maintenance can be provided at a more effective interval.

For over 25 years, Harding Energy has been an innovator and major manufacturer of custom batteries, battery packs and chargers.

IRWIN Industrial is proud to be the exclusive Canadian representative of Harding Energy Inc.

Q: You also used to work on the larger, marine division at Seastar Solutions, formerly Teleflex Marine. What can you share about Seastar Solutions and how much do you guys collaborate between Seastar Solutions and Proheat. “I actually started as a student at Teleflex Marine in 2003, and in 2009 I moved into the Proheat side. Seastar Solutions is a leading designer and manufacturer of equipment for the recreational boating industry. They do a lot of great stuff, such as the Optimus 360 which was launched earlier this year which is a steer by wire with additional joystick control system allowing 360 degree movement of your boat.” Says Lowrie. This means you can literally joystick the movement of a boat to move in any direction, including moving laterally and rotationally at a standstill. That’s pretty slick. Lowrie adds, “As for collaboration, we collaborate on a daily basis. We do peer reviews on our design, and we discuss design concepts with each other. There is a lot of interaction between the two groups on the electronics side.” How does this give Proheat an edge against its competition? “We have staff on the marine side who have been involved in the automotive industry as well. To be able to tap into both the marine and automotive side allows us gain excellent insights into how to create long lasting products in extreme environments,” explains Lowrie. Proheat can create great products, but by having the Seastar Solutions team on hand to review and critique their designs can sometimes result in even greater results. Do you have any advice for a budding entrepreneur? “Use as many resources as you can to gain knowledge. Partner both with your customers and with your peers. Even if you have a team member who works in another division, find ways to interact and gather feedback from them. Be there for your customers when problems arise, even if it is not related to your product, because by doing this, your end product will flourish.” Proheat is a growing Richmond, BC based division of Seastar Solutions. Thermal Management & Enclosures

Custom high-speed backplanes aid in making new products Specialist manufacturing assures long-lasting performance

By Ed Garstkiewicz, market & applications manager for broadcast, medical and military, Harting Inc. of North America

Achieving ultra-fast data transfer rates, the equivalent in advanced electronics to supersonic travel, is a critical threshold for designing the next generation of sophisticated products like medical imaging systems or broadcast routers. Only a complex custom backplane that employs suitable pcb base materials and interconnect systems under proper design rules can deliver the exceptional data

Automatic and semi-automatic press fit machines like these make precision insertions of entire rows of components on backplanes. They are self-monitoring, and the insertion data can be stored for later review in case issues arrive in the field.

throughput rates that make possible the breakthrough capabilities of many new products. Today’s fastest custom backplanes can deliver over 25 Gigabits per second serial. Developing these complex boards involves collaboration between the customer and one of a relative handful of manufacturers specializing in and equipped to assemble custom backplanes. In creating an ultra-fast board, the backplane specialist can supply signal integrity analysis and modeling of the entire channel from chip-to-chip to determine the optimal layout and routing in conformity with the latest standards for high speed transfer. This specialist firm has design capabilities of its own, but more often than not works with the customer’s engineers or consultants to arrive at the best achievable configuration – also the right balance between costs and performance for the product for which it’s destined. The custom backplane assembler then coordinates the network of specialized vendors – pcb, tooling and component manufacturers – with the expertise to support such a custom build. Harting’s North American backplane manufacturing facility in Elgin IL has begun full production of its largest backplane ever – 46 inches long, 62 layers (over 3/8 inches thick) with 17,000 contact points. This requires equipment large enough for handling such an oversized product: screen printer, pick and place and press-fit machines, reflow oven and advanced testing facilities. Most back-

plane manufacturers typically work on an 18 x 12 inch surface, whereas custom builders usually can handle boards as large as 48 x 24. For ultra-fast backplanes, thickness presents another manufacturing challenge that requires special expertise; the greater the transfer rate, the thicker the board and the harder it is to solder. Large custom boards tend to have components affixed by both soldering and pressfit methods. The RoBAT test system performs a battery of tests on finished backplanes of any dimensions, even the fastest custom boards.

It doesn’t appear that the development of electrical backplanes has reached a definitive performance limit. For years, there have been predictions that the industry couldn’t do much more with copper laminate than it had done already – that speeds above 10-15Gbps would mean going for an optical backplane, a promising concept that still needs a great deal of additional development before it becomes a cost-effective, reliable alternative to an electrical board. Instead, we are likely to see 40Gbps or more on copper laminate. Pcb manufacturers keep increasing their capabilities to make even more complex printed circuit boards. Connector manufacturers keep pushing more speed through connectors. The likelihood is that custom copper laminate backplanes will keep pushing the speed envelope so OEMs can take their products to yet another level. A Breakthrough Welding Technique for Light Gauge Sheet Metal Enclosures Welding can be a great problem solver in enclosure design; creating seamless corners, enabling previously impossible part geometries, and saving money. However, conventional MIG and TIG welding are not well suited to light gauge sheet metal, as they deliver excessive heat which causes meltback, blowouts, and warpage. Thus, we were thrilled to discover a process called ‘Cold Metal Transfer Welding’ that is capable of welding light gauge metal with a fraction of the heat input. Meltback is eliminated and warpage is dramatically reduced. As a result, we are now able to weld all of the metal that we stock, including the thinnest gauges. Speeds have increased and scrap rates have also been reduced, which translates to lower costs for our customers. For more information, visit www.protocasec.com/products/mcf_seam_welding

Sapa develops high ratio air cooled heat sinks Sapa Extrusions North America, Rosemont IL, has achieved a breakthrough method in manufacturing high ratio air cooled extruded aluminum heat sinks that are approximately 8% more thermally efficient than the industry standard. Created by Sapa’s North American Technical Center (NATC, an internal research, design and development center) - the heat sink design leverages the firm’s aluminum extrusion manufacturing and Friction Stir Welding (FSW) technology, a technique that joins flush metal surfaces through the mechanical action of a rotating tool. The patent pending method utilizes a modular concept that enables maximum flexibility with fin geometry, fin ratio and heat sink footprint. Not only does this method allow for the production of large-scale heat sinks up to 20” in width, it is also well-suited for serial production, making these types of heat sinks a competitive product in the marketplace. “We’re now able to achieve heat sink ratios in excess of 40:1 where we were previously restricted to ratios of 16:1 based on extrusion limitations,” says Steve Jackson, business development manager of thermal management at Sapa Extrusions North America.

Temperature sensor ICs deliver 1.8V SMBus and I2C communications

Multiple mounting options for cooling units in electronic enclosures

EMC118X six-member family of temperature sensor ICs come with 1.8V SMBus and I2C communications, required for interfacing to the latest generation of smartphone, tablet and PC chipsets. The integrated low-voltage I/O support reduces cost and board space because it is accomplished without an external voltage level shifter. Devices use an advanced sample-frequency-hopping filter, which enables temperature-monitoring traces of up to 8 inches in noisy environments with accurate readings. MICROCHIP TECHNOLOGY

Multiple mounting options for thermoelectric air conditioners make it easier for designers and end-users to meet varying installation space requirements with electronic enclosures. The standard through-mount option assures optimum airflow which promotes efficient cooling of cabinet contents. The cold side of the air conditioner protrudes into the enclosure about 3.5-inches. Through-mounting is suitable as long as the equipment housed in the enclosure allows enough clearance for the air conditioner. EIC SOLUTIONS

High-voltage battery simulator and test systems

critical for electric, hybrid vehicle development Essential for conducting R&D, performance and durability testing By Randal Beattie, SAKOR Technologies Inc.

High voltage battery simulator and test systems are essential for conducting testing of the high voltage dc power systems that are such a critical element of electric (EV) and hybrid/electric (HEV) vehicles. To accurately test a high voltage hybrid or electric drivetrain, you need to be able to provide precise, repeatable highvoltage dc power. Standard off-the-shelf power supplies will not work, because they cannot absorb power from the EV/ HEV’s regenerative system and may even be damaged or destroyed if used with one. To fill the need, new technology is being developed specifically to test highvoltage HEV batteries and simulate these batteries in an electric drivetrain environment. At the heart of the system is a fully line-regenerative dc power source, which can provide reliable, repeatable power which in turn allows for repeatable data because the system’s performance is not affected by battery charge state. In

addition, this innovative method provides much greater power efficiency and measurably reduces overall operating costs. Such a system can also test batteries by precisely simulating road conditions, so engineers can see how the battery will really respond if put in a vehicle under real-world load conditions.

Charging system at the heart of hybrid and electric vehicles The battery is the heart of an EV or HEV, acting as an energy storage device that allows the vehicle to store electrical energy and then use it to drive when needed. In an EV, the battery is analogous to the gas tank – fill it up and it runs until it is empty. With an HEV, the electrical system is used to assist an internal combustion engine. In a normal condition, an electric motor can be used to drive the vehicle. However, it can also be used to resist

the battery is charged (its charge state). To use a battery for testing, you must therefore ensure it is always at the identical charge state at the beginning of each test, and charged exactly to the same level every time – or you are likely to get somewhat different results. What’s required instead is an electronic power supply, running off of the power grid, which can actually provide the very stable dc high voltage capability that the battery would give, and also be able to absorb power like the battery would. Unfortunately, providing precise, repeatable high-voltage dc power for accurately testing a high-voltage hybrid or electric drivetrain is no easy task. Most standard power supplies are single quadrant units, which means they supply current in one direction – they generate power to drive whatever device they are attached to. What they don’t do is absorb power. Driving power back into this type

vehicle motion during braking. At this point it becomes a generator, generating electricity and pumping it back into the battery to be stored and used to drive the vehicle later. This energy recapture is called dynamic braking. Whether in an EV or HEV application, the battery needs to store the regenerated power so that it can be used later to power the vehicle on demand. Testing overall electric or hybrid vehicle performance as part of new product engineering requires a system that can be used to test the high-voltage battery system, as well as simulate these highvoltage batteries while conducting EV or HEV driveline and inverter system testing. Using a battery as the power source for an EV or HEV testing system will not give you the repeatable data that is required. This is because the battery’s charge and discharge state will affect the results. Batteries absorb and generate power at differing rates depending on how fully

A tutorial on basic line power measurements Summary Oscilloscopes measure current and voltage and, through the magic of mathematics, calculate power. Unfortunately, power comes in a large number of guises: instantaneous, real, apparent, and reactive. Basic line power measurements

This plethora of power terms often leads to confusion. The Power Analysis software package simplifies these measurements and eliminates the necessity of setting up the proper math operations. Oscilloscopes, whether analog or digital, are voltage responding instruments. Current is measured using a suitable transducer, usually a current probe or resistive shunt. The oscilloscope display is the instantaneous function of voltage or current vs. time. The product of these quantities is instantaneous power. It simplifies the determination of real power, apparent power, and power factor by eliminating the need to set up math traces and parameter math. It is even more convenient to use than dedicated line power analyzers. The scope is already on your bench and the answers are only a button push away.

Apparent power is automatically computed and displayed as the parameter apwr. For resistive loads, the apparent and average powers are equal. The ratio of average to apparent power is the power factor. In the sinusoidal case, the power factor is equal to the cosine of the phase angle between the current and voltage waveforms. It is more generally computed as the ratio of real to apparent power. In our example the power factor is also computed automatically and displayed using the parameter pf. The value of the power factor is 0.633. Icrest is the crest factor of the current waveform. Crest factor is the ratio of the peak-to-peak value of the current to the rms value. The reactive power, N, can be derived from the real and apparent power, using the following equation:

of ac power supply will likely overload the power supply and permanently and severely damage it.

Advanced battery testing technology In the recent past, battery manufacturers have not needed sophisticated systems to test batteries, but the advent of EV and HEV has led to a greater need for new and advanced battery testing technology. In response to this critical need, technology is being developed that can be used for high voltage battery testing. The testing system subjects the battery to the same charge/discharge profile as it would encounter in an actual vehicle on an actual road course. With these systems, during regenerative modes, absorbed power is regenerated back to the ac mains instead of being dissipated as waste heat, which is common practice among previous generation testing systems. This highly efficient method provides much greater power efficiency and measurably reduces overall operating costs. The technology uses an inverter system to convert high voltage three phase ac power to very stable dc voltages. This is a complex technology, especially if done in a regenerative fashion. To provide a high voltage dc source that can also absorb power, you need high power high frequency switching, using very high quality components. The system also needs to provide very good filtering to provide the stable dc voltage required.

ject to step testing, in which they were charged, discharged and then cycled at two or three different loads. Nowadays, this simple battery cycling just doesn’t tell the complete story – you also need to know the battery’s mileage or range, and you need to know how it will operate in the vehicle in a particular environment. Modern testing systems now have to be able to test batteries by simulating actual road load conditions. The vehicle environment is continuously changing and therefore the battery needs to be tested for a variety of vehicle running conditions, for example driving up a hill, down a hill, starting, and stopping etc. This can be done in two different ways. The first is to use a mathematic simulation of charge and discharge dynamics, and performing drive cycles developed by

EPA, the European Union, or customerspecific requests. The second method is to instrument the vehicle and drive it over an actual road course, while monitoring key required parameters, such as throttle position, vehicle speed, voltage, and current.

Taking it to the next level The high voltage battery test system is a very powerful and efficient tool, but it really comes into its own when coupled with a high performance ac motoring dynamometer. The resulting test system is then capable of testing the entire vehicle drivetrain to a high degree of accuracy and in a very power efficient manner. With a standard system that requires 100 kilowatts of power, about 110-120kW would have to be pulled from the ac mains because of energy losses to heat. In addition, you would also need approximately 100kW of electricity to cool the water used for the dynamometer. With this new system most of the absorbed power is recaptured and reused. Total cost to operate at the same 100kW

level may draw only 10-15kW to run the entire system, including cooling. In addition, control is easier, as switching from driving to loading happens automatically and seamlessly. The result is a significant reduction in the total operating cost by using a much more energy efficient ‘Green’ technology to perform full system testing. High voltage battery simulator and test systems are essential for conducting research and development, performance evaluation, and durability testing of high voltage dc power systems to be used in electric and hybrid vehicles. Such systems can be used for high voltage battery testing as well as simulating high voltage batteries while conducting hybrid vehicle driveline and inverter system testing. These modern test systems provide much more realistic and accurate data at significantly reduced total operating costs. For more information on the HEV battery test and simulation system from SAKOR Technologies Inc., go to http://ept.hotims.com/46003-62

Variety of testing scenarios There are three different types of battery testing conducted as part of new product engineering: research and development, performance and durability. The same basic equipment is needed to conduct all three types of testing, though there are a few significant differences. R&D testing by its very nature comes with a plethora of unknowns. In addition, R&D systems are usually more expensive because they tend to have more data acquisition/data logging capabilities. With R&D systems, engineers may be designing high-voltage batteries within a particular range, not knowing exactly what the maximum voltage, current, and/ or dynamic performance will be. In this case, care must be taken not to underestimate the size of the testing equipment, which should be built with high enough voltage, current, and power capacity to test the biggest battery that can reasonably be expected to build within the next few years. Performance testing systems are similar to those used for R&D, but may be somewhat less complicated because engineers typically have a much better idea of the highest voltage, current and power requirements and know much more about what kind of speed response will be needed. They also tend to require somewhat less instrumentation. With durability testing, engineers are simulating what the device will actually see in the real world (or typically much worse). The system doesn’t have to be as fast, or include extra voltage/ current/dynamic range, because at that point the performance is pretty well known. Durability testing systems have to be extremely stable and robust, since engineers will be running durability tests 24/7, for days, weeks, or months without interruption. The system can be set up to run unattended and even send a text or call a beeper if there are any problems.

Real world conditions The battery’s dynamic response to real world conditions is often very different than its response under simple laboratory cycling. In the past, batteries were sub-

Data Acquisition & Sensors

How to choose the right

pressure or thermal sensor for your application By: Dan Herzog, global product line director, pressure and thermal products, Honeywell Sensing and Control TruStability HSC Series and SSC Series comparison chart

Choosing the right sensor for a particular application can be challenging. A sensor that is considered reliable in the packaging industry may not be able to withstand the ruggedness of a welding application. The key to sensor performance is to apply the appropriate sensor to the right application. There are three things designers should be aware of when specifying-in sensor products: accuracy requirements, packaging requirements and environmental concerns. Different applications have different accuracy requirements; however, the more accurate the sensor is, the less time is generally required for application design. Packaging requirements are also specific to each application and choosing the wrong package can add cost to the

Pressure centers come in all sizes and shapes and can be used for many applications.

overall assembly. Working with the supplier’s engineering team can help ensure the right package is selected. Knowing the overall environmental conditions of an application is also important for designing a reliable product. For example, if condensation is a possibility in the application, choose a sensor that is liquid compatible.

Platform approach A sensor platform approach is Honeywell’s way of offering a variety of packaging, pressure ranges and porting options. This gives design engineers more flexibility in system design. A platform approach can also improve overall system efficiency by matching the performance of the sensor to the application. So, how do you select sensors that address multiple performance requirements? Here is a guide to finding just what you’re looking for based on your performance requirements or design needs. First, decide what the application for the sensor is. Then, you’ll need to ask some of these basic questions, such as, how extreme are the temperatures or corrosive nature of the media being measured? Is the environment a vibration challenge? What is the pressure range that needs to be measured in psi, bar, inches of water, etc.? How much time are you willing to devote to the integration of the sensor, or must it be ready to implement and forget? What is the pressure type (gage, absolute, differential)? How accurate does the pressure measurement need to be? And, just as important, what are the size and price constraints? Deciding on the right sensor involves

knowing what you need, and not paying for what you don’t. From board-mounted pressure sensors to heavy-duty pressure transducers, each sensor type addresses specific needs, requirements and cost targets. For example, if you require ease of integration on a pcb, porting and housing options and small size at an economical price point, an unamplified/uncompensated basic board-mounted pressure sensor would be the best option. When selecting and implementing pressure sensors into designs, the following are important features: • Very low drift over time or temperature and humidity extremes • No need to calibrate after mounting to a pcb • Temperature compensated and calibrated • Custom calibration availability • An extremely tight and consistent accuracy specification • A wide variety of package styles and options with the same performance specifications After basic board-mount pressure sensors, the next level of pressure sensors is designed for those who want to leverage their calibration and amplification. These sensors have less part interchangeability and are already temperature compensated, providing the ability to retain a high degree of stability, accuracy and repeatability. Ranging from 1psi to 150psi (60mbar to 10bar), these pressure sensors will operate as specified from -40°C to 125°C. The next level of pressure sensor is amplified, compensated, and can be used as is without further calibration. The HSC and SSC TruStability pressure sensors (see chart above) offer a tight accuracy and small form factor. They have low power consumption which provides extended battery life and promotes energy efficiency. This type of pressure sensor is typically used for monitoring and control of industrial and medical pneumatic flow

and system pressure for precise and efficient performance. These higher-end board-mounted pressure sensors should adhere to the moisture sensitivity level 1 requirement to avoid the thermal and mechanical damage during solder reflow processes that lesser rated products often incur. One aspect of selecting the correct pressure sensor for your job is finding a supplier that is truly a one-stop shop. Regardless of capability, quality and reliability should be a key component of all its product offerings, no matter the price. There are many considerations when selecting pressure sensors to meet the requirements at hand. Fortunately, today’s sensors span a wide range of options from basic ‘no frills’ pressure sensors to heavyduty pressure transducers suitable for the harsh of environments.

Custom calibration Platform sensors provide custom calibration for specific airflow and pressure ranges and offer a variety of mounting, size and packaging options. By better matching the pressure or airflow ranges to the application, the end result is a more accurate end-product. This is achieved by improving the overall resolution of the measurement.

Value-added assemblies Honeywell provides value-added products that are built on pressure and thermal sensing platforms combined with some of the firm’s other products, capabilities and technologies. Honeywell will also package pressure and thermal sensors to facilitate easy customer implementation. For more information on pressure or thermal sensors from Honeywell Sensing and Control, go to http://ept.hotims.com/46003-63

Medical applications In medical applications there are three critical factors for choosing force and pressure sensors for use in infusion pumps: reliability, sensitivity, and miniaturization. As infusion pumps transition from bulky models to portable, ambulatory and implantable devices, designers should consider sensor platforms that provide a range of options that make them easy to implement in a variety of designs. Designers should also consider pressure sensors that are fully compensated, amplified, and calibrated. The benefits include lower total costs, higher reliability and faster speed to market. Force and pressure sensors must provide high reliability and high sensitivity to ensure the desired amount of medication is being delivered to the patient. Board-mount pressure sensors are used inside the pump to monitor and help control the flow of fluid. Force sensors on the outside of the pump measure force non-invasively on the outside of the tubing that delivers the medication. Measuring the force on the outside of the tubing eliminates the requirement to sterilize the sensor.

Since elementary school, you’ve had to show your work. Make sure your calibration provider does too. When it comes to calibration, a simple pass/fail answer isn’t enough. You need a full report of tests conducted — including accuracy. And if the test results were out of spec, how far? A certificate alone is not the answer to calibration. Ask to see the work.

Contract Manufacturing & Production Equipment

Avoid overlooking depaneling step in the pcb manufacturing process By Shane Stafford, market development representative, LPKF Laser & Electronics North America

Depaneling is a step easily overlooked in the printed circuit board (pcb) manufacturing process. A great board design, flawless circuit etching and perfectly placed components mean nothing if individual pcbs cannot be separated from a panel without damaging components, solder joints, or the board itself. Conventional depaneling methods such as die punching, pizza cutting and routing impose levels of mechanical stress that exacerbate these issues, leaving a substantial amount of profit in the depaneling line’s waste bin. The percentage of usable boards removed from a panel is known as production yield. The higher the yield the better, and far too often contract manufacturers are depaneling boards at alarmingly low yield percentages. With pcb designs getting smaller and shifting away from traditional square shaping, finding the depaneling method that meets the efficiency levels OEMs desire is becoming more important than ever.

Comparing methods As pcbs get smaller, components are being forced closer and closer to the edge of boards and many manufacturers are seeing sensitive components such as ceramic capacitors coming back from the production house damaged. To compensate for this, conventional depaneling methods leave manufacturers with two options: either fit fewer parts to each panel in order to leave a mechanical stress ‘cushion’ around each board (the recommended cushion for pizza cutting can be as high as 5mm), or leave panels full but experience painfully low yield

percentages. For decision makers, this is a lose-lose situation - but it doesn’t have to be. To eliminate the mechanical stress that is the source of damaged components, under-populated panels and low yield percentages, manufacturers can turn to UV laser cutting. An accurate, stress-free pcb processing solution, UV laser cutting is especially suited for depaneling because it completely eliminates the mechanical stress caused by conventional depaneling methods. This frees board designers to place components right up to the very edge of boards. Additionally, with a 20µm beam width

Your Go-to EMS Provider Since 1988

that is 250 times smaller than the ceiling 5mm cushion for pizza cutting, UV laser depaneling allows pcb panels to be filled to potential. Clean, precise cuts can occur without spacing boards out and wasting panel real estate. Unlike the lose-lose scenario described above, the alternative proposed by UV laser depaneling is an all-around win.

Why UV? By replacing physical tools with a virtual one (the laser beam), no contact is made with the panel and the effects of mechanical stress are wiped away - but that’s not the only way UV laser depaneling reduces the amount of stress imposed on pcbs. When it comes to depaneling, there are two types of stress that can be imposed on the board. As we’ve discussed, one of these is mechanical stress. The other is thermal stress, which results in adverse effects caused by excess heat. The most common of effect of thermal stress is burning. There are two primary methods of laser cutting when it comes to printed circuit board depaneling. CO2 lasers, which operate at high energy levels, produce a very hot cut which increases the chances of effects such as burning. Populated pcb cut on a UV laser system

FIG. 2: Same material cut with a UV laser system

hot, high-powered nature, the CO2 laser produces considerable more burning and deformation to the flexible Kapton material. Accommodating for these effects requires a 100µm cut cushion, making an effective cut width of 120µm. The effects of thermal stress are limited by the cold ablation of the UV laser, however, and require only a 10µm cushion. This results in an effective cut width of 30µm. In this case, working with a UV laser is going to not only eliminate mechanical stress but also greatly reduce any effects of thermal stress, leaving behind a clean, precise cut.

Other benefits The application shown in Figures 1 and 2 brings up another benefit of depaneling with UV lasers: the ability to work with a wide variety of materials. From standard FR4 to flexible or soft materials, UV depaneling is suited to process any board material. Polyimide, PET, PTFE, Rogers materials and fired and unfired ceramics present no problems for the stress-free ablation of UV laser depaneling. Additionally, as boards get smaller and move away from square shaping to fit the demand for miniaturization, UV lasers are especially adept at cutting boards with round and/or arbitrary contours. UV laser cutting is ideal for applications that are 62 mils thick or less, but can cut thicker applications if the board is scored prior to ablation.

On the other hand, UV laser systems operate at much lower wattage than CO2 systems and produce what is known as cold ablation. So while you may say to yourself, “It’s great that lasers eliminate mechanical stress, but what if my boards get toasted,” you can rest easy knowing that the effects of thermal stress are greatly limited by the thermally cool nature of UV laser depaneling. Figures 1 and 2 show a comparison of UV laser depaneling and CO2 laser cutting. As you can see, the effects of thermal stress are limited with the UV laser. Both lasers in this application feature a beam size of 20µm. However, due to its

As manufacturers seek to increase the amount of usable boards returned from the production house, there is one depaneling method that satisfies the demand for higher yield percentages while also providing the flexibility needed in today’s ever-changing circuit board design landscape. That method is UV laser cutting. With UV laser cutting, effects such as cracked components, board fractures, and broken solder joints are eliminated. In addition, the same stress-free nature that helps increase yield percentages also makes UV laser cutting especially suited for working with delicate and flexible materials. Coupled with the precise nature of its 20µm beam, UV laser depaneling is ideal for cutting miniature, arbitrary designs.
