Conflict minerals concerns relevant to component buyers If you are in the position of purchasing electronic components, there is good reason for you be aware if they contain conflict minerals. It is obviously paramount to find out, especially prior to having an engineering team design-in those contentious devices. The deadline is approaching for companies to comply with the SEC’s disclosure rules relating to the presence of conflict minerals in manufactured products. Conflict minerals are minerals whose production contributes to the financing of armed conflict and human rights abuses in and around the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The disclosure rules apply to SEC-reporting companies, including MJDS companies and other foreign private issuers, if conflict minerals are necessary to the functionality or production of a product that the company manufactures or contracts to have manufactured. Conflict minerals include tantalum, tungsten, tin and gold, all of which are used in electronics equipment ranging from cell phones and computers to hearing aids and pacemakers. Maintaining compliance of products to environmental regulations has become a significant challenge and effort for product manufacturers. In turn, design teams working for OEMs and CEMs and even hobbyists must apply their own internal processes to identify requirements, obtain information from a global supply chain, assess conformity/risks,
and to maintain documentation. A recent report from IHS iSupply, indicated that companies across the electronics supply chain need to be prepared to provide compliance information by May. Even if a business does not use conflict minerals in its products, it has to demonstrate it has conducted due diligence in making that determination. A recent IHS iSupply survey indicated that electronics companies risk losing business if they do not comply with the conflict minerals regulations. The survey found that 30% of those surveyed said non-compliance was their biggest risk and concern and 28% were concerned about losing customers. The first step in achieving compliance to substance regulations is knowing the substances of concern. For a more detailed look into the subject of conflict materials, I would urge readers to move forward in this issue of EP&T and read the article supplied by Walter Jaeger, principal consultant with ECD Compliance in Ottawa. The article (on page 12), details some of the environmental regulations surrounding conflict minerals, while helping readers determine substances of concern in their electronic designs. Power Supplies
The basics
of convection cooling for applications that cannot use a fan
By Steve Elliott, sales director, XP Power
Cooling without a fan When choosing a power supply for a given application, there are many reasons why you may want to avoid using a fan to cool it. The audible noise coming from a fan can be a deal-breaker. For equipment destined for laboratory or control room environments, where the operator is in close proximity to the equipment at all times, minimal audible noise is a very desirable characteristic. Medical equipment that is used near to the patient, such as patient monitors and infusion pumps that are near the patient for a long period of time, also need to be as quiet as possible. Another downside of fans is their reliability. The low lifetimes of these mechanical components can mean they fail in use, leading the power supply to overheat, or require more frequent maintenance or replacement before the end of their life. For systems which require a high
IP-rating, fans are clearly out of the question, since very little ventilation is permitted in order to keep solid and liquid contaminants out. For example, any equipment used in food processing areas will need to have a high IP rating as there will be solid and liquid contaminants present in the environment. Lower IP ratings, perhaps enough to keep out dust from industrial equipment, may condone use of a fan, but often air filters are required. These filters will need scheduled maintenance to clean or replace them periodically, which may be undesirable.
Convection cooling If your application restricts the use of a fan, you’ll need to look at convection or conduction cooling. Conduction cooling involves bolting the unit to a large heat sink or metal box so the heat is transferred to the outside of the equipment. This is usually reserved for high power applications with larger
levels of waste heat, as it can be complex and expensive to achieve. This article will instead focus on convection cooling as a simple approach for lower power equipment. Convection cooling, put simply, means there is enough free air around the power supply that it can dissipate the amount of heat it needs to without raising the ambient temperature too much. Natural convection currents inside the enclosure cool the unit. As a result, there is a big difference in the power densities offered by power supplies for forced air (fan) cooling and convection cooling, for a given efficiency. A typical 3" x 5" power supply may have a convection cooled rating of 150W while the force cooled version may have a rating as high at 350W. It’s important to fully understand the likely constraints that a convection cooled power supply might operate under in order to ensure the lifetime and reliability of your design.
Efficiency ™

Plugs & Jacks
Efficiency is even more important for a convection cooled power supply than for a force cooled one, since all the heat will be staying inside the box; if air can be blown over a unit, dissipating a few more Watts doesn’t matter as much. Every efficiency point means less heat dissipated — and technology is improving the efficiencies that can be attained all the time (Figure 1). When specifying a convection cooled power supply for your equipment, you’ll want to choose the most efficient power supply that matches your budget. For example, if your application requires the highest efficiency, XP’s CCB200 boasts an efficiency of 94%; this 200W supply dissipates just 12W from its 3" x 5" footprint (Figure 2). For more cost-sensitive applications, a suitable alternative might be the 150W convection-cooled GCS180, which is 92% efficient. It’s advisable to check that whatever claims the manufacturer is making about the rating can be backed up by the efficiency, otherwise cooling is likely to be a problem. There are several things to bear in mind that may affect the headline efficiency number quoted on the data sheet.
Figure 2: XP’s 94% efficient CCB200 dissipates just 12W from its 3 x 5" footprint, making it suitable for convection cooling.
This headline efficiency is usually a bestcase-scenario and will therefore not be available over the full spec of the unit.
For example For example, the input voltage used affects efficiency in real-world applications. Most ac-dc supplies on the market have a universal input for worldwide use. However, in the USA, where mains voltage is around half the European equivalent (230V), double the input current is required to produce the same amount of power. Working with higher currents produces a lot more loss in the various components of the power supply and efficiency suffers. Considering the resistive losses alone, the power lost is I2R, so doubling the input current (from high line voltages to low line) actually multiplies the power lost by a factor of four. Dropping from US voltages (115V) to Japanese mains (90V) increases the input current by a further 28%, creating another 65% more resistive loss. Many data sheets therefore only specify the efficiency at high line voltages.
Convection ratings The next thing to check on the datasheet is the rating curves for the power supply. It may surprise you to learn that there isn’t an industry standard way for manufacturers to gather this rating information – practices vary widely. Products are generally tested in an environmental chamber, but some of these chambers use fans to maintain the temperature, inadvertently creating an air flow around the unit. Obviously, this is to be avoided if you are trying to measure under strict convection conditions since even a small amount of air flow can have a significant effect. continued on page 10

Off-Line PWM controllers with integrated power MOSFET STR4A100 series off-line PWM controllers incorporate both a sense MOSFET and a current mode PWM controller IC (developed by Sanken Electric Co.). Product series uses a secondary side regulation topology suitable for low power SMPS regulators in white goods and other applications. An auxiliary power supply, which is separated from the inverter or main power supply, may require high-efficiency and low stand-by power. Product makes it possible to lower the stand-by power to less than 10mW. The low standby power is accomplished by the automatic switching between the PWM operation in normal operation and the burst-oscillation under light load conditions. The end result yields a high cost-performance power supply system with few external components. ALLEGRO MICROSYSTEMS http://ept.hotims.com/51123-54

The basics of convection cooling continued from page 6
At XP Power, the firm places its product in the chamber inside another box and maintains the ambient temperature based on the temperature inside that box, to try to get an accurate picture of the product’s performance. This creates consistency across design groups and repeatability, which is also a challenge when performing thermal testing. Information like how the product is tested is almost never included on the datasheet but nevertheless has an impact on the final ratings. In order to meet safety requirements, be it industrial, medical or IT, there are maximum temperatures that certain components (like transformers) can be run at. The thing to remember here is that the safety temperatures are the absolute maximum temperatures allowed, not a recommendation for normal use. If the product was to run consistently at the safety temperature, though it might pass UL approvals, the lifetime of sensitive components would suffer. To deliver a long life, the system should run as cool as possible.

Other things to remember when designing for convection cooling include the fact that the power supply is designed to be placed horizontally or vertically. At no time should it be used upsidedown. Since heat generated by the power supply will naturally rise, placing the power supply’s pcb above the hot components is not recommended. Also, don’t forget to consider what other parts of the system are likely to get hot. Are you using a large CPU? A display? What about a motor or pump? These heat-generating components will also require cooling and will add to the waste heat inside the product.
Summary Though convection cooling does not permit as much waste heat as forced air cooling, it is a must for certain applications where a fan is not acceptable. Since the waste heat remains inside the enclosure, it helps to choose a power supply whose efficiency is as high as possible and to check carefully whether the manufacturer’s efficiency claims can actually be met in your application. Environmental regulations Determining substances of concern for electronics By Walter Jager, principal consultant, ECD Compliance, Ottawa-based consulting services
Introduction
Environmental compliance is a moving target -- new regulations continue to emerge creating significant challenges for the EEE industry. Substances added twice a year to the REACH SVHC Candidate List, the Denmark phthalates ban and the additional RoHS substances are prime examples of new requirements. The first step in achieving compliance to substance regulations is knowing the substances of concern.
Substances of Concern for EEE
To identify the substances that need to be considered during the design, procurement, and manufacturing of a product, the IEC 62474 declarable substance list (DSL) provides an valuable starting point. It consolidates many of the regulated substances applicable to
EEE, helping companies focus their effort on substances that are most relevant to their products and, thus, avoid effort on low risk substances. For example, many of the current 151 SVHCs are intermediate chemicals which – if fully reacted – should not remain in a finished product. IEC 62474 is an International Standard on material declaration that includes an internationally recognized DSL (based on the Joint Industry Guide (JIG-101)), a material declaration procedure and an XML-schema for data exchange. The JIG-101 was the EEE industry’s de-facto substance list from 2005 through 2012; it was integrated into IEC 62474 to provide broader International acceptance. The JIG-101 document, itself, has not been maintained since 2012 and should no longer be used by organizations. A unique aspect of IEC 62474 compared to most other IEC and ISO standards is that it includes an online database for
the contents of the standard that may need to be updated regularly. The IEC 62474 database is publicly available at http://std.iec.ch/iec62474/
Material declaration
Material declaration is a methodology for suppliers to provide information about the substance and material content of their products. Material declarations can help organizations assess compliance and provide valuable evidence as part of the technical documentation requirement for regulations such as RoHS-2. As an International Standard, IEC 62474 is intended to have a global harmonizing effect. Several jurisdictions (including Europe) have adopted IEC 62474 as a regional/national standard and it is referenced in the RoHS-2 harmonized standard EN 50581. The IPC 1752 and the Japanese JGPSSI and JAMP material declaration systems are leveraging the IEC 62474 specification.

The IEC 62474 DSL is a list of regulated substances and substance groups (e.g. lead and lead compounds) that a manufacturer should declare to downstream manufacturers if present in the product. The DSL may be accessed from the IEC 62474 database via the menu bar on the left side of the website (Figure 1) – click on “Declarable substance groups and declarable substances” and then select the substance from the drop down list. There is also an option to export the entire DSL. Each substance or substance group entry in the list is accompanied with a reportable application and a reporting threshold level. For example, selecting “Lead/Lead Compounds” presents five entries with different reportable application / reporting threshold combinations – the first entry corresponds to the RoHS restriction. Clicking on the “Details” button reveals information about reference substances; typical EEE applications, regulations, and other information.

IEC 62474 includes a material declaration procedure (rules) and an XML schema for data exchange. The procedure is specified in the document portion of IEC 62464 and the XML schema is available from the IEC 62474 database. A key objective in the development of IEC 62474 was to ensure that the recipient of a material declaration has sufficient information to properly assess the conformity of a material or product – this overcomes a limitation of several earlier material declaration systems. For example, a material declaration that reports only a single ‘highest’ concentration of lead in the product can be deceiving – the highest concentration may be covered by a RoHS exemption, potentially masking a lower concentration of lead in another material.
Declarable substances update
The key challenge with publishing a list of substances is keeping it up to date with environmental regulations. The IEC 62474 DSL is maintained by a Validation Team (VT62474) consisting of 39 representatives from 14 countries, including three representatives from Canada. An evaluation is normally triggered upon submission of a formal change request; however, the VT will also proactively screen new substances added to existing regulations (such as substances being considered for the EU REACH SVHC Candidate List). One of the evaluation criteria that requires significant technical assessment is whether the substance could realistically be present in the product above the regulatory threshold. Updates to the IEC 62474 database content were made in June 2013 and September 2013. Another maintenance cycle was launched in October 2013 and is in final validation. The June and September updates included 35 additions and 10 modifications to the DSL. Most of the updates were the result of additional substances added to the REACH SVHC Candidate List, but there were also a few modifications and a couple of substance deletions. A comprehensive summary of the changes is available at: http://rohs.ca/ IEC62474.html The maintenance cycle that was started in October 2013 is focusing on the REACH SVHCs that were added to the SVHC Candidate List on December 16, 2013. The screening and evaluation phases have been completed and the change requests are in the final validation phase. The update is expected in March 2014.
Summary
Maintaining compliance of products to environmental regulations has become a significant challenge and effort for product manufacturers. Internal processes are needed to identify requirements, obtain information from a global supply chain, assess conformity/risks, and to maintain documentation. This needs to be accomplished efficiently and cost effectively and be flexible enough to accommodate new regulations. Leveraging industry best practices, including the use of risk assessment can be particularly valuable. For substance restrictions and disclosure, identifying the substances of concern that need to be considered during the design, procurement and manufacturing phases of a product is an important and practical first step to help focus the conformity efforts. The DSL included in IEC 62474 provides a convenient starting point for engineering and procurement specifications and helps organizations focus on key substances for market acceptance. The DSL is updated regularly to reflect changing regulations.

Industrial Automation
Software-designed PACs By Brett Burger, Sr. product manager for embedded systems, National Instruments
Think subroutine, not sub controllers
Today’s controls engineers face the pressure to simplify system complexity as they are tasked with increasingly complex challenges. Unfortunately, solutions to these challenges are difficult to clearly define, so overall industrial market trends are instead discussed in an attempt to simplify an industry of escalating complexity. Motors, once viewed as large pieces of iron that would last for decades, are now monitored and scrutinized for the earliest sign of failure or the slightest hint of efficiency loss. Furthermore, control inputs to cutting tools have evolved from the digital ‘cut or stop cutting’ approach to complex vision-guided force-feedback schemes that detect media edges and density, responding with a precise amount of cutting force. These examples support the real need to integrate commercial technology to keep pace with market pressures and increasingly complex control problems. Fortunately, commercial technology continues advancing for control designers. The latest processing technology for PACs is now available with the National Instruments cRIO-9068 software-designed controller. The processing elements of this controller are built on the latest silicon technology from Xilinx known as Zynq. This system on a chip (SoC) combines floating point processing cores, FPGA fabric, and DSP slices on a single chip, which helps control designers collapse advanced machine subsystems into
fewer controllers, creating a more simplified architecture.
Sussing out the appropriate embedded solution This all sounds a bit unfamiliar to control designers who are more familiar with ladder logic than logic gates, but all PACs, PLCs, and embedded controllers contain processing elements. Some even contain FPGAs or ASICs used for signal processing and timing. These different processing elements are analogous to a basic tool such as a hammer. When walking down the tool aisle at the hardware store, a wealth of hammer options hang on the wall. While most of these could be made to serve other hammer functions (e.g. driving nails or breaking apart objects), it’s critical to use the right tool for the job. PC based automation is like a general purpose claw hammer - versatile enough for most applications, but with deficiencies in more advanced operations as it’s too harsh to properly function as a dead blow mallet, too light to act as a sledge, and too small to serve as a good framing hammer. For a broad range of applications, the standard floating point processor is ideal although it falls short with applications that require high-speed timing, triggering or tight latency as this is where an FPGA is beneficial. Floating point processors can also be used for signal and control processing, however these are costly compared to an FPGA or DSP used for
repetitious algorithms. While FPGAs are ideal for processing intensive algorithms, they are limited in runtime flexibility. It’s the combination of all of these processing elements that make new PACs/PLCs and embedded controllers so promising when it comes to simplifying subsystems. At a basic level, subsystems join hardware and software to serve a specific function such as a temperature control system. In this case, the hardware inputs are temperature sensors, the outputs control a fan or heater, and the software logic for the system could range from a simple limit function to a more advanced PID algorithm. In complex machines with multiple components, this temperature controller is a separate design on a custom board that communicates back to the
main controller via a cabled bus. Instead of requiring separate, optimized hardware designs for sub controllers, designers can use newer embedded controllers to more easily rely on a single flexible core.
Achieve a faster time to market
This helps simplify machines with fewer controllers that are software-designed, which makes it possible to achieve a faster time to market at a lower design cost. Subsystems in machines are abstracted as software blocks that can run on the host floating point processor or the available FPGA/DSP resources. Instead of sub controllers, think subroutine. Regarding the hardware, many sub controllers already use modular I/O and the advanced capabilities of new embedded controllers help reduce the need for custom FPGA/ASIC hardware design. This technology is ideal for applications that include any high performance machine paired with multiple sub systems. As an example, a laser saw is used in the process manufacturing of silicon wafers. This commercial technology helps manufacturing engineers’ process silicon wafers with less waste and faster than less advanced mechanical cutters. To do so, these machines feature several New PACs and embedded controllers shift subsystem inter-operating subsystems integration into software design that include separate controllers for temperature control, laser control, high-speed analog input with inline processing and a supervisory PC with an operator interface. Because a communication framework with central control is necessary for all of the sub controllers, today’s machine designers develop a separate design for each sub-system. continued from page 14
These algorithms consume CPU resources that increase with channel count, which leaves fewer CPU ‘reserves’ for other tasks and either limits the capability of the controller or increases its cost. Moving these processes to a combination FPGA/ DSP processing unit eliminates some of the workload on the flexible CPU and improves data throughput, as FPGAs handle multiple processes more efficiently. While FPGAs contain fixed space, they feature the nearly unlimited capability to add parallel processes within this set space. As shown with the previous analogy, using a claw hammer for demolition can work, but at some point a sledge hammer is more appropriate as it offers increased efficiency.
Design focus switching to software With some of the design focus switching to software, it’s important that software tools are available to make use of available processing technology. The most common programming standard for PACs/PLCs is some form of IEC 61131. The 61131 is an abstract language that focuses on sequential, digital heavy process and control, but it is not designed to handle advanced programming or to target FPGA/DSP fabric. Many advanced control designers look to a standard programming language such as C for embedded design and although C can handle nearly any task or processing target, it’s a low level language that requires more expertise and time to implement a subroutine design. Other programming environments exist in the space between. As an example, NI LabVIEW system design software offers a balance between these two software environments, as it can simplify the programming process including memory handling, threading, and core management, while offering low level access to processing and I/O elements on the core or FPGA fabric. Programming syntax aside, ensuring system designers’ access to commercial technology is essential to overcoming increasingly complex challenges, such as changing standards and the pressure to innovate faster at a lower cost. In the end, processing elements are not beneficial to the designer if there is no way to program them. Many of the processing elements and firmware available on today’s advanced control systems are locked down or unaccessible. The more open an embedded controller is, the easier it is for control designers to merge these complex machines into fewer subsystems. As an example, PACs/PLCs with
modules that measure waveforms and output only post-processed values or PID ‘control chips’ include hard coded logic. These designs are cheaper from a hardware cost to implement, but do not provide the designer with flexibility to debug or modify the locked down processing firmware. Also, when these components go end of life (EOL) it can be difficult to replicate the exact algorithms, resulting in many potential problems. The new cRIO-9068 controller (see figure below) exposes the floating point processor, the FPGA fabric with DSP slices, and even the operating system, which is a real-time version of Linux. With shell access, designers can tap into the vast Linux community to get a machine up and running in less time and with fewer resources. In addition to off-the-shelf Linux applications, control designers can reuse existing code in C as the new floating point processor supports both LabVIEW software and the Eclipse development environments. Offering the best of both worlds, users can deploy existing software on the latest hardware with the least disruption.
CTP 1K series of rugged modular dc-ac inverter systems employ microprocessor controlled technology to deliver 3-Phase 1000VA output power with pure sign wave output voltage. Suitable for industrial applications, products provide 3-phase outputs of 208Vrms, 380Vrms or 400Vrms (line-to-line) at frequencies of 400Hz, 60Hz or 50Hz. Phase-to-neutral voltages of 115Vrms, 220Vrms or 240Vrms can also be used. Units operate from dc voltages of 24V, 48V, 110V or 125Vdc. ABSOPULSE ELECTRONICS http://ept.hotims.com/51123-90

Product is available with optional mounting flanges, rod eye ends, connector or cable terminations and a captive connecting rod assembly that cannot break loose. Only trust a reliable, time-tested solution for your design The NI cRIO-9068 adds unique processing elements for timing, high-speed control, and signal analysis to the traditional floating point processor.
With industries such as steel milling, textiles and semiconductor, the need for smarter machines is driving the demand for improved machine control design technology. PACs and embedded controllers using the latest hybrid processing technology can help advance and simplify machine design by shifting the architecture from several unique PACs/PLCs or custom designs to fewer, more consolidated software-designed controllers. The next generation of embedded controllers will not replace many of the old stalwarts of the process world. Rather, these controllers are ideal for the next generation of smart machines and are best suited for more advanced designers looking to get to market faster with a more simplified architecture. Active Tech re-focuses with new business model As the exodus of electronic contract manufacturers and R&D firms continues from North America, it would seem that the marketplace for electronic distribution as a consequence appears bleak. Well, for one firm pursuing a new business model – Active Tech Electronics Canada Inc., Richmond Hill ON, has prospered given its new perspective. Previously flagged as Active Electronics and operating as a national electronics distributor, the firm was recently acquired by Active Tech Electronics Canada and quickly determined that the distribution marketplace had changed. Acting on its findings, the repositioned concern forged a dynamic business plan, focused on the demographic shift in users, technology trends going forward, industry and educational transformation, client valuation of the distribution chain and of the customer experience specifically. Active Tech made another logical step in ensuring its continues on the right path as it appointed industry veteran of 30-years Elci Gos, to the position of general manager of sales. “Elci has brought a whole new perspective to our company and is bringing exceptional differentiated value to new clients and our present client base. He has a wealth of experience and brings a fresh and thoroughly researched perspective to our client’s needs” says Andrew Roberts, president of Active Tech Electronics Canada. Shortly after being hired, Gos relocated the firm’s Toronto location into a sales office in Richmond Hill.
“For some time now the growth of online electronics sales has been growing. We needed to harness this behaviour in a specific way as one facet, to aid in the growth of our business” says Gos. “Active Tech Electronics Canada is growing. The foundations are being set for the next cycle of electronic clients and we are well on our way to build upon these foundations” Gos adds.
